We're going to shine so bright tonight. Let the music take control. Ignite the fire in your soul. We're going to shine so bright tonight. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. This is a quote that is repeated every morning in our announcements and that every student learns their beliefs. We hope you enjoy learning about our school and how special it is. We welcome you to visit us anytime. We are always learning, always practicing, being kind, and always trying to do it together. >> Remember, be rough. We believe in you. You are enough and love. You have strength and we know you will try your best. You can do anything you put your mind to. No matter what happens, know you can turn it around. We will support you and never give up on you. Together, it's better. Sadly, Stallions, have an awesome day. >> I just want to say good evening to everyone and thank our leadership team here.
What you may not know is that there is a comprehensive toolkit in handbook available to help schools when they implement the act. It contains an implementation roadmap, a model board policy, frequently asked questions and a fact sheet and reimbursement options from the state for any costs that you incur and also successful case studies. The toolkit is available by searching the web and I've also left a copy of it. This may be old news to you. You may be aware of the toolkit, but I did a search on the school policies and so forth and then didn't see it referred, so I thought I would bring it and then provide it to you. Thank you. >> Thank you. And our next speaker is Jan Bartola. Hello, I'm Jan Bartalada, a Beressa Union School District teacher at Toyon for 10 years and a tenure substitute in the district from preK to 5.
These are the people working behind the scenes to ensure our school has the resources and support required for teachers and staff to focus on what matters most, our students. Audience, please hold your applause until all names have been announced. Amy Shandy, Board President. Susan Payne, Vice President. Dr. Eddie Waldrip, Director and Village High School Liaison. Holly Tripp, Treasurer. Derek Wilburn, Director. And from Central Administration, Superintendent Ginger Haver. Assistant Superintendent of Learning Services Dr. Susan Field, and Shane Knight, Executive Director for Learning Services. Let's give our Board of Education and members of Central Administration a round of applause. >> [applause] >> It is now my pleasure to introduce our superintendent Ginger Haberl. Superintendent Haberl, Colorado native, brings more than 30 years of educational experience and expertise to Academy District 20.
Through our service efforts as individuals or as a group, we build empathy as we learn more about those in need or crisis. Service also fulfills one of our responsibilities as citizens. As a National Honor Society member, you will be you will be presented with many opportunities to deepen your understanding of service leadership and to grow your passion for helping others. As a member of the National Honor Society, I quickly came to realize that service isn't about big, dramatic moments. It's about consistency. It's about choosing to show up in quiet moments when there's no recognition or applause. And deciding to still be of service because you care. As a group, our commitment to service has had a real impact, and one moment that showed us the kind of impact we were capable of was our winter coat drive supporting Jersey Cares. What began as a simple collection quickly turned into a township-wide effort, and every coat collected represented warmth, comfort, and care for someone in our community.
I think it's important that people understand that some people might say, well, what's 1%. I know it's not a lot, but I think what we've tried to do in the district for the last seven years, and that's all I'm looking at. I'm not going to deal with time uh years before my time. We have tried to make sure that we do the most we can for our staff and every little bit helps. Um we wish we could do more but the reality is we do what we can do. So you can see when you take a look at this like for certified staff the total increases over that seven years has been 31% 31.8% on an average of just short of 4% a year. I'm not going to go through the whole thing but you can see support staff administrative staff and certified instructional staff too with Essers.
Teachers bring equal parts skill, heart, and hustle. Nurses know when it's a big deal and when it is a band-aid, and when it's both. And our classified staff, well, they're the reason the lights come on, the wheels keep turning, and the days stay on track. Every role matters and together they create the kind of schools where people go allin so students can go all out. Maricopa Unified School District is proud to partner with the newly formed Coalition for Arizona Public Schools, a statewide initiative focused on sharing the positive impact of public education and addressing misinformation surrounding Arizona's schools. Communications Director Michelle Terry and I recently participated in a coalition summit alongside education leaders, advocates, and business partners from across the state. MUSD looks forward to advancing the effort to promote transparency, celebrate student success, and champion public education in Arizona. Maricopa Elementary School was named a winner of the read of the reading is fundamental rally to read sweep stakes with just 100 schools selected nationwide.
Seeing you grow this year fantastic. As we wanted to give you and say thank you for everything. >> Thank you. This is Dr. Brown. >> Okay. So, we spent tonight celebrating a lot of people doing a lot of amazing things. We're really proud of the last one I have is another one that we are super proud of because we are only one of 15 schools in the nation that is being recognized for theater. department under Kelsey's leadership as we're named as a premier community for theater education from the educational theater of 15. It's a threeear designation. It's a national distinction presented by the educational theater association to schools that demonstrate exceptional achievement in providing meaningful high quality theater education and access for all students. the educational premier school recognition honors communities that prioritize theater education by the people resources and support systems that help students thrive through the arts.
Adams says or um depleting them entirely. So at that point, we're in a much more serious position. >> So it's been, you know, are there other cuts that could have been made or other decisions that could have been made in regards to other programs so that it wouldn't have had to be it wouldn't have to be a $2.75 million override? Could it have been less? >> So I I >> And I'm asking you to summize even though >> I mean I am, you know, I'm not in the weeds anymore, but I've been in the weeds. Yeah. And um you know we have a very lean school district and and I again I know sometimes that is hard for people to understand, hard for them to hear. >> Um >> but it's the case that's why we're 362nd out of 39 in spending per pupil, right?
I think it was 2024 or 2023, um we created a warrant article, and it was in the spring, so you only need 10 people to sign it, but you want to get more like 15. We can talk about the specifics more. And because when I first moved to town, it was such a joy to go to town meeting. You could get up and talk as long as you needed to, and nobody ever abused it. And there were always people in line, and they were happy and laughing. And then that changed. I think it was 2017. Not sure the exact date. But they decided that we could only speak for 60 seconds. That was version one. Well, by the time you got up and you said your name and your town, you could barely say anything before you were cut off by this timer that seemed to get bigger and then it became giant.
And I just want to say for the record as I do every year even though I know everybody here now knows you know how well run this trip is and popular and effective but I have to say it every time. Mike knows cuz he's been on it. It's one of the best things that certainly I've been part of. I'm looking around I see Aaron I see Kelly you know all of you guys my opportunity to get to know you and see what amazing people that you are and to see you learning to see students learning how to have compassion for others not that they didn't before but I mean this is next level even if you're an adult right? Like it's just the ability to go there and um do nothing but take care of others and see how that changes their entire life. Um I don't think there's anything any better gift than than we can give our kids.
It's just a machine. And it shows like that's the So, yeah. Do you want to do the next group they go to down there and get that? What? Do you want to go down there and join your guys? Yeah. Do you want to do the rest of this? I want to get Do you want me to try to join up on the other shoots that you're on? Yeah. Okay. I'm probably busy, but I'll see what I can do about putting it I I can see the schedule so I know when you can like sign up for it. By the way, don't sign up for the ones that say no go. They're not happening. Oh, okay. Okay? I saw your name in them like, what? I don't want you showing up to something where there's going to be no one there. So you guys Stephanie, you guys are getting tight shots, right?
Passing it up. This is Neve- Ne- Neville. Neville centering pass. Good defense though from Fiore. Oh, look at this. Weitzman is getting a little aggressive there. Behan dishes it to Brown. Dorr up to Drake. Drake looks like he's going to try to go in. Good coverage by Savarese. All right. Drake passing it behind the net. Dorr trying to get away from Olmstead. Olmstead's got some serious reach as I would call it. Behan has it trying to get away from the other other Savarese and good last minute stick changes the trajectory of this ball and it's going to be Raider ball. Nice defense from the boys. 6:47 left to go in the first quarter. Raiders still down by one though. Weitzman fires a pass. Nice pick up by Ben Savarese. Ben on that far side. Still has it. Ben passes it to Montemayor. Montemayor's shot blocked.
We have Gabe L returning and two newer members, Henry A and Esther B. Mosaic Club. On April 11th, the April 10th, I believe, the club hosted a successful first annual dodgeball tournament uh fundraiser with four adult teams and six student teams participating. The club will continue to meet with Matt Allen uh monthly and have an endofear bonding activity/cookout. And that is all I have. Thank you so much.

I'm Lenny Surlic, the principal at Styley Ruff. This is Jenny Lopez, assistant principal. I think this was a perfect example of the start of the portrait of a graduate. When we talk about the start of the continuum, the K5 piece, clearly you could see we're doing our due diligence to get a good start on that continuum. This is what we pass on to the middle school. And I think that's why I wanted to have them present tonight. I could take the mic and talk all night. You know that, but I didn't want to do that. And it was hard to give this up to them, but I knew I was confident they could do this. And they were giving me chills. I don't know about you guys, I had tears in my eyes over here because everything they articulated is everything that I would have said.
I was blessed to be a toyon with a diverse student body and creative staff aware at of the diverse needs of our students and eager to meet them. wonderful memories of a school now closed. Today I'm speaking on behalf of the San Jose branch of AEW, American Association of University Women. I and my colleagues are members of the San Jose branch. AW supports academic freedom, protection from censorship, and bias-free education, as well as access to curricula that represents historically accurate information. According to the California Department of Education in California, it is the state board of education, not each school district, that decide decides on the standards for all students. Keeping this in mind, I refer to ED code section 51,23.5 requiring that so social science instruction include the role and contributions of both men and women, members of various races and ethnic groups, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans, persons with disabilities, and members of other ethnic and cultural groups.
She comes from a long family lineage of educators who instilled in her a desire to inspire others to be lifelong learners. After earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and starting her career pathway as a registered nurse, she soon realized that her true passion was being an educator. Superintendent Haberl has served in many roles from the classroom to administration, including earning national board certification as a science teacher, and serving as a middle and high school principal, an assistant superintendent of student achievement, and a superintendent for 5 years in the state of Washington. She is grateful to serve as the superintendent of D20, where the team one spirit ensures that all students thrive. Please help me welcome to the podium Superintendent Haberl. >> [applause] >> Well, good afternoon, Village High School Mountaineer graduates, family, friends, and distinguished guests, and most importantly, our amazing faculty uh at Village High School.
We also participated in the Trenton Makes initiative at Cure Arena alongside other service clubs, where we packed meals for those around the world facing food insecurity. This was a true reminder that service takes collaboration, effort, and commitment. We also built connections with Lore and Talbott elementary schools by supporting their families during our PTA meetings. While parents were in their monthly meetings, we spent time with younger students playing gym games, making coloring sheets, and having conversations about our days. My favorite moment was at Lore when Kim and I played a game of basketball against Juliana and another third grader, and somehow we ended up losing. Our service didn't just focus on the community outside of our school. As NHS members, we also turned our focus inward. We took lead on appreciation days, recognizing EHS faculty and staff throughout the year. Whether through small gestures or organized efforts, we made sure that the people who support us every day felt seen and valued.
