So like we're not even doing that." So I sort of just want to like just touch face and just see like what's the overall picture look like? How is it going? Is it do we feel like what we're doing is effective? Do you guys like the direction that it's going? Do we pay $12,000 a year um or not? Like >> so. So, we do not pay a subscription fee. Okay. >> At all for yonder. We do pay if we need new pouches. >> Yes. Right. $30 a pouch. Um the high school I was I called the other day to touch base and I couldn't get Mr. Browning the other day in the afternoon ended up talking to one of the secretaries to reaffirm that in the front hallway and at the back. Whether or not the students use them, I'm not disputing that, but that they do bring out the magnets every day for those who do use them.
And I will also mention the speaker of the assembly resides within Santa Clara County. he represents a part of us and he's someone you should also reach out to and talk to. So that's also at the end of my comments as well. All right. Any other things? >> Yeah, I just want to echo the thanks for our staff and teachers and I hope you were spoiled by your parents and and kiddos last week. Um I've been visiting a lot of schools the past couple months and I just have to say like it just is constant reminder of how special Beressa is. Um, not only are are the classrooms just so fun and engaging, but when I talk to teachers and I and they are so excited to show what they're working on, whether it's science projects like spread across the room or um making musical instruments and podcasts and just how the learning is being applied, you can really tell the passion is in the teacher and then the students really respond.
After I graduate, I will attend Western Colorado University and study exercise science to become a physical therapist. Nathan Joshua McElhiney I want to thank my parents and my brothers that have supported me and pushed me every step of the way. I wouldn't be here without you. Hayden Joshua Mezei I want to thank God above all and then I want to thank my parents and my family for helping me become the person I am today. Addison Miller >> [cheering] >> Thank you to Shannon Baker and Katie Reddington for always helping me succeed in the classroom as a person. Thank you to my family for your endless support. I plan to attend Santa Barbara City College and play volleyball and major in environmental science. Riley Miltko I would like to thank my parents, my brother and sister, and everyone who helped me get through high school. My future plans are to attend UCCS while I play junior hockey and get a degree in sports analytics.
And one of the options is still going to be what's on the table right here because I can't come to you with one option and then have the same conversation on June 10th because we're running we're going to run into a problem with the budget that we have to approve by July. Okay? Okay. >> But I'll give you two, might be three. I don't know what they are because I haven't given any thought. >> Sounds fair. >> And then we'll go from there. >> Sounds good. >> Okay. >> Thank you. >> Just make sure. Uh yeah, we'll take a break and we'll reconvene in eight minutes. Okay, we're going to go ahead and reconvene for our regular session. We'll go ahead and say the pledge. I pledge algiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic which stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all.
Everybody learns differently, but again you you you have a challenge ahead and again keeping them engaged and their attention and also having to modify it from sixth grade to you know 12th grade. Wow. You know th those are different. Their their minds are different, their learning's different. But again, thank you for what you're doing in continuing those efforts and again but most importantly um creating an outlet and a resource for the the students who are um again more comfortable in that setting and providing that setting for them. Thank you. >> Thank you very much. [applause] >> All right, we're at the call the public. We have two speaker cards. So, I must read this. Members of the board may not discuss items that are not specifically identified on the agenda. Therefore, pursuant to ARS 38431.01, action taken as a result of public comment will be limited to directing staff to study the matter, responding to any criticism, or scheduling the matter for a future agenda.

And I'm honored to have been a part of it. >> [applause] >> I got it. Sure. It's I'm done. Okay. Lori's done. Uh, we do have a number of folks here who would love to share um, some thoughts. Um, and you can come up to the podium as you wish, but uh, Michael, I know you have to head to the uh, back to the academy. Uh, right. So, [snorts] so if people want to line up behind Mr. Herbert, that'd be great. Thank you. Just make sure that mic is on and you can go in any order you'd like. I know there a number of people. Yeah, go ahead. Kristen, right behind him. Perfect. Love it. I was about to say I can't be the only one. I'm sure. I know. Uh, and and thank you and thank you for for um, um, allowing me to to go first just so I can get over back over to DPW, but um, Lori, this is your night.
Number seven is Nathaniel, the younger Door. Shaw hits the post. Archie coming up big on that save. All right, here we go. Abrams with it crossing that middle plane, passing off to Atwood. Atwood on that far side, 20 right now. Going down. Passes to Montemayor. Montemayor tries to get it to Fowler. Ball goes into the Mustang state. Oh, look at that. Good contact. Oh, and we got a little scrum work. A little scrum going on here. >> [cheering] [applause] >> Tate Logan comes over and pushes Fowler. Looks like Charlie Hartnett might have a penalty. Yes. He does. The refs are talking about it. Center field. Under 3 minutes to go, 2:58 on the clock. 11-7. >> [cheering] [applause] >> And look at this, Logan getting around a round of applause as he gets a penalty. Tay Logan, definitely a a big guy. I don't want to say he's a bad man cuz someone might take offense, but take that in as a good way, like being a bad man.
So some of the students may walk by and they may tell you we don't use it. Some others do use them. Not as whole scale as I would say the middle school. I would almost point blank say everybody is using it there almost. Right. I'm sure some and the students are getting sly right and slick. Sometimes they say they don't have a phone. Sometimes they'll put an old dead phone in there so that there's something in there. So there's there's ways around it, right? And yeah, we're not naive to what's going on either. >> I watched them open them on the bus. They There's ways. >> Oh, really? Okay. >> Oh, yeah. Easy pie. >> All right. Uh, member Dman and then member Webb. >> Is there a replacement fee for the students families if the pouch is lost or broken? >> No. >> Okay.

And so that's like the above and beyond. Um, and I saw it everywhere I visited and it really just brought to light the learning and what was happening and it was not, you know, it wasn't just walking in the classroom and going this is DK and it's like great, thank you and we keep like it was genuinely I felt welcomed and really got a sense of um how learning is happening in our district and I appreciate that and and um I appreciate all of you. So Thank you. And I will move on from that. So we there's nothing under comment or review and discussion. No public hearings. We have a couple items for review and action. And now we are going to the resolution that we're all talking about to declare May as employee recognition month. I also want to add to the chimes of just saying thank you to all our Beressa employees.
>> [applause] >> Holly Mikolon I want to thank my parents for supporting me through my goals and aspirations. I would not be who I am today without them. I also want to thank God for guiding my path and keeping me strong in faith and courage. Emma Katherine Nachtigal I want to thank my parents and siblings for supporting me in everything. I will miss you. Anthony Prince Engebretson >> [cheering] >> I would like to thank my family and friends and the Lester family for bringing me in and a special thank you to Yoda. Presley Olsen. I am so grateful to my mom and dad family, Miss Stevens and Miss Brubaker for equipping me with the tools to persevere. Your guidance has taught me how to navigate tough situations and overcome adversity. Thank you for believing in me and helping me become who I am today. Rowan Alexander Orgel.
>> Okay. Going to go to um board meeting minutes. uh 6.1 approval of the minutes for April 8th uh 2026 regular board meeting. Any questions on that? >> Um if you don't, I'll take a motion. >> I move to approve the minutes for the March 4th, 2026 regular board meeting. >> I second. All in favor? >> I motion carries four to zero. It's stuck. >> Yeah. >> Oh, nope. It went away. >> Oh, should it be? >> Oh, it came back. >> Mine isn't coming at all. >> Mine isn't either. >> Yep. >> Yeah, mine didn't work. >> And mine went all the way to the bottom again. Okay. 6.2. Approval of meeting minutes, April 8th, executive session.
The board requests that all comments be limited to three minutes or less and that the public refrain from the use of speech or language that is offensive or inappropriate pursuant to board procedure 3-203. Our first speaker is Roof Rhonda. Good evening. My name is Ro Faranda and my son is Axel. I'm returning tonight because this district affects my child. The school district per website was responsible for the education of 9,900 students across 11 schools. It employs 1,200 employee. It employs 1,200 people and has an 83 million budget. And I'm back to hold accountability. It took me three years of asking, speaking out a month ago, and several meetings with the superintendent of academic services to obtain his records. I got them today, minus progress reports and report cards, which the district is telling me we don't have them. It's illegal, per ARS15-241. Dr. Lopeman called me earlier today in efforts to hear me.
Dr. Brown. >> Yes. I'm asking for approval from the board to hire summer school staff. Summer school will begin prior to the next uh board meeting. So, asking for permission to do that. Then I would bring them to you for the June board meeting. >> Can I get a motion? >> Go ahead. >> I make a motion that we approve 26109. >> Can I get a second? >> I'll second.
Um, >> [snorts] >> I was thinking, you know, on my way over here. There's so many things I want to say, which we all know I will probably try to do it, but I will try to keep it succinct. Um, but one of the things You know, a lot of times especially people in my profession, they go to places for three or four years, five years tops, right? Um, in the town manager world. And it gives you an opportunity to to know people, um, and develop relationships um, with them in a working capacity. But when you have the privilege of working with the community and working with elected boards and and everybody for 10 13 years, you start getting to know people as people. And you're one of my first memories here in Ashland is, you know, going to a tri-board meeting and and just um, you know, some of the interactions during those days were different than they are today.
Seems like he's pretty strong. That's what I'm saying. 2:58 and Fowler has it. Can the Raiders close it out? Oh, great pick from Abrams. Fowler bringing it all the way to the corner. Dish it off to Olsen. Olsen Oh, thought about it. Gets hit by Gray. Abrams to Atwood. Atwood who's had an amazing game today. Can he add to that? Yeah, he does. Kid's a beast. And I mean beast as in a good way, you know what I mean? Don't want you to take offense to it. Just covering my grounds, people. 2:28 left to go in the game. 12-7 Raiders definitely going to win this one. Pretty confident. It's kind of funny cuz like when when you're covering like girls lacrosse, you can't really call a girl a beast or a monster or any of that. Kind of sounds better when you're saying it about a guy.
Um that would be a possible consequence and that's what we do in the school where I teach. >> Okay. >> Um as member Deni points out there are ways of breaking these pouches. There are ways of hacking them so they don't really do what they're supposed to do. Um and we've seen several students at the school where I work. They just smash them u and then they stop because it's a way of getting it open. Okay. Right. and and then you can do that a few times and then eventually it just breaks and I can see a situation where without any consequence to that that could be pretty rampant. Um >> and then my other question is uh it sounds like you're saying that at the high school we're on an honor system. The the students what motivation is there for the students at the high school to lock up their phone?
>> Okay. >> As member Den points out, there are ways of breaking these pouches. there ways of hacking them so they don't really do what they're supposed to do. is you really make our district work. And it's your work every single day that ensures that all of our students are able to achieve the heights that they can achieve and really being able to be there every single day with them at all levels of the district, whether be a bus driver, a teacher, clerk, and even here at the district office. We really appreciate all the hard work that you do. And so we wanted to pass this resolution and say thank you for your amazing work throughout the year. All right. So passing this resolution. All right. Do we want to say have a choice? >> Yeah. >> All right. And I will go ahead and read the resolution and then we'll take up a vote. So employee recognition month. Whereas Beressa Union School District concurs with the governor in the state in recognizing public employees play a vital role in the educational well-being of students.
