for next year we'll pay 93.90 if we had an unpaired route it'd be 154.99 that's substantial it's a big savings of what we do right well in saving to districts 58 and 68 too which helps helps them out as well well and when we hear about consolidation of school districts you hear about the kind of savings that you could have right in cooperating we do that even though we're separate school districts we get that same kind of savings yeah fiscal leverage by working together with our partner elementaries yeah all right so this is one year at a time i mean it looks like we've extended no we usually do a multi-year contract it's just right that they're asking to extend that yeah it would be very difficult to go out to bed right now right now so given the current situation so we're anticipating next year that we would yes we would go out to bid next year oh okay yeah we generally do but this would not be a a good time to do that with economic time for us to try to go out and openly compete which is intended for audience members to address the board on any topic pertaining to community high school district 99 comments will be limited to three minutes to provide all visitors an equal opportunity to address the board individuals needing more time should submit their thoughts in writing to the board secretary mrs nydiak visitors addressing the board need to submit a comment slip to mrs nydek and will be invited to the microphone prior to addressing the board audience members should state their full name the proceeds are being tape recorded and live stream okay so is there something wrong okay the proceedings are being tape recorded and live streamed for the produ for the purpose of producing accurate meeting minutes i reserve the right to modify these protocols of circumstances warrant and your observation of these protocols is appreciated all right we have seven uh visitors wishing to address the board this evening as usual i'll call you up um and i'll let you know who the next person is so you can kind of prepare your thoughts for for the next group so first person up uh this evening is carrie swenson followed by noel manley you got to kind of stay there because you're wired down there you go um i actually don't start my timer yet i'm passing out your board ethics for you to don't go through it now you all have it on your computer but i'd like it in front of you and there's some past emails that i've sent out to the board um way before you were here christopher um i'll get you one to share and i might run out that's all right we'll make sure that they get to the board um but my name is carrie swenson and i'm here to address the board the admins that are here the building administration administrators that were here um my comments today come out of a place of love for district 99 i've been up here complaining you all have gotten my emails i've also been very positive with my children with other parents when things are going well the past three years through coven i've been up here and and have had negative things to say because of the way it was handled but i've also been at these board meetings before covet and there is a consistent pattern that i've seen at these board meetings there are different personalities there are different ways that are that we are voting that we are deciding and mike board member davenport really brought it home to me at your last meeting on the 14th when he brought those shirts out okay and and what kind of school we used to have so i thought about this as a parent as a taxpayer that was a message of unity that was a message of positivity the leadership on this board with president nancy kupka has been one of divide and of negativity and i have multiple examples of that of her breaking this oath that i brought here consistently starting with my very first interaction with you where i sat down after speaking and you proceeded off the mic to yell at me and say you gave your opinion now it's your my turn to get mine that is a violation of to represent all school district constituents honestly and equally and refuse to surrender responsibilities to special interests or partisan political groups you didn't have that i was off the mic it was out of order and you never apologize and you did it again another meeting a month later where you said you don't speak for my people that was your exact quote you don't speak for my people exactly which people are those nancy because these are your people sitting right here as well i can tell you it's also not the majority of the community right here in front of you and we have been here all along yours we don't you don't speak for my people another example of a clear violation to stay abreast of important educational issues at the local state and national levels you're not staying abreast of these you asked dr thiel in november 2020 when our students were getting vaccinated or how many of our students were vaccinated it wasn't even available yet for students that was national news all over any news thing when are the students testing is starting here why would you ask our superintendent what the vaccination rate is for students when it wasn't even available you were not paying attention to things you needed to to govern this board effectively how can someone who humbly brags about being a phd in nursing a lead clinical researcher at walgreens not even know when student vaccinations were available it's blatant disregard for community for the community you serve furthermore you offer once and your time has expired can somebody give me their minutes no no that's not part of the board protocols the next speaker is noel manley thank you is that somewhere in writing you get three minutes noel manley is the next speaker the speaker after that will be uh marcella ciro good evening my name is noel manley and i'm a resident of darien illinois i want to congratulate the board on its 5-1 vote on february 14th to have the district go mask optional effective today february 28th i also want to thank the d99 students who advocated on behalf of themselves they could not have made a clear case to end the sad chapter in our two-year covet ordeal i also understand that the attendance rules have changed so now that masking has been addressed the board needs to move the meetings back to a larger venue covered mitigation and alleged threats were used as justifications for the former attendance policy which limited attendance to 20 attendees now the masking issue has been addressed we need to look at these alleged threats to be clear any elected official or public employee should never ever be threatened they are elected to do a job and whether you agree or disagree with their performance of that job a threat should never be issued illinois state law is very clear on this point threatening public officials a person commits threatening a public official when that person knowingly delivers or conveys directly or indirectly to a public official by any means a communication containing a threat that would place the public official or a member of his or her immediate family in reasonable apprehension of immediate bodily future or bodily harm threatening a public official is a class three felony for a first offense and is a class two felony for any subsequent offense on february 14th board member pevisit paz referenced in her public comments threats that have been made and her comments were also quoted in the suburban life newspaper this is true board member passage you need to be clear about the following who made these threats when was the threat made how were the threats communicated what started what was stated in the threat and were these threats reported to law enforcement again to be clear foias have been sent to both district 99 and the downers grove police department regarding these serious issues however responses show that no threats have been reported so is there information that you're not sharing with law enforcement or the public on this most serious threat serious matter as an aside i have a certification in cyber security from the illinois institute of technology and i can assure you that law enforcement can access or has access to very sophisticated tools they can track the electronic fingerprint of most posts emails or texts and quite frankly people making such threats are not generally very sophisticated and to be clear one more time when someone disagrees with you that is not a threat it's just a difference of opinion thank you miss shirelle followed by carrich genoak good evening my name is march hello dirty cherry there's a societal revolution by government edict that's taking place right now in this country and it's one in which parents are being told they have no right to interfere with a public education the contempt and arrogance of the political elite has grown to the point that even our school boards act above us and look down on the citizenry maybe if americans were being taught reading writing and arithmetic instead of identity politics crt and the feel good disguise of being good global citizens they'd be literate enough to fully comprehend the dangers of what's currently taking place in the world today you have waged a war against families and parental authority so forgive me if i have zero sympathy for how frustrated you are school officials have betrayed our trust by unapologetically working against community values you have acted as if our rights were privileges to be granted your frustrations pale in comparison to what parents and students have had to endure for far too long and while most though not all of you voted to finally go mask optional i will not extend any gratitude victims don't thank their abusers for the return of their freedom you only change your position because your feet were held to the fire as i've said here before our children are not wards of the state we don't relinquish our parental authority when our children step onto school grounds by tradition and by law parents have the primary responsibility for their children's care their health their nurture their morals and values and yes for the content and the quality of their education mr noah followed by kevin custer cara yep kevin custer is next followed by beth bakken backer thank you my name is kevin custer on august at the board meeting nancy you publicly stated that crt would never be taught on january 31st the face of downers grove north video was played to my son it's talking about intersectionality my son asked me to watch the video and ask me what i thought i want to teach my son how to think not what to think and i asked him what did he think what the video talks about is greta greta doesn't have to think about her identity both of her parents are educated her father was owns a successful business because of this she doesn't need to think about her identity greta thinks of herself as someone who will go to college and get a good job when she graduates greta can ignore her intersectionality the video goes on to say fatima and jerry are part of a marginalized group so they don't get to choose if they have to think about their identity the implicit message of this video is saying that in order for someone to be oppressed there has to be an oppressor i asked my son what did he think about this he's very smart he said what if the white girl was jewish would she be oppressed then or not my family is a multi-racial family no one should ever tell me my wife my son or my stepson that they are oppressed or they are an oppressor because of the bill of rights and the constitution this is the greatest country in the world it doesn't matter what your race your skin tone is i travel all around the world teaching financial literacy and empowerment to the poorest people in the world intersectionality does not factor into the people that we serve my son has decided to serve in the army 30 days after he graduates dgn north rather than your teachers telling my son he is an oppressor i would just ask that they thank him for his future service [Applause] laura hoist is the final speaker after beth good evening my name is beth bacher i have a sophomore at downers grove north and a college junior who went through north for the past six or so years i volunteered with teens from high schools throughout dupage county last night some of my students who attend district 99 schools told me they were afraid to come to school today because it was mass optional they had no problem with the virus but they were afraid that other students and teachers were going to come at them and that brings me for my to my purpose first talking tonight sorry i'm very nervous i'm asking the board please reach out to the students that lawfully chose to go mask optional the week of february 7th listen to their stories and invis investigate their claims of mistreatment i emailed the board members outlining the mistreatment that my son was put through and i feel like my concerns were blown off i was told to go to something on the website to report something but here's the problem i have no faith and no trust in district 99 so instead i reported my concerns to the department of children and family services and it's my understanding that other parents did as well at the last meeting mr davenport thank you you raised concerns about maybe looking into some of these claims for about mistreatment and they were blown off too i hope you all noticed the chorus of objections coming from the students and parents sitting here the objections to the blow-off the teachers are not all the teachers but some of the teachers and staff at district 99 have not done anything to protect the harassment of these unmasked students and what's worse is some has joined in the bullying and the intimidation i'm flabbergasted in how adults have treated children in these past couple weeks now it's not all of them my son has wonderful teachers and wonderful staff that have been great but the fact of the matter is there are staff teaching at our high schools that don't belong teaching kids or just can't do it now due to some emotional damage from covid i don't know and i'm concerned about the teachers as well because i know some of them have to have been bullied and intimidated too and i know that because that whole week i heard i'm just trying to do keep my job i'm just trying to make it through the day we are they meaning the upper levels are making us do this this is not right i wonder how many other parents and students had the very same things that they heard so i'm begging you as board members investigate this this behavior and treatment of our students was unconscionable at my son's school there has not been a lot of positively north going on for a good chunk of the students but i am concerned that district 99 has some positively toxic your time has expired thank you good evening can you hear me my name is laura hoyce i thank you for changing the rules around the meeting tonight i want to speak on three items first the masks off second oma violations open meetings act violations and third the survey for strategic plan i agree with the last speaker that there has been irreparable harm done to our students by the masking that was done for not the purpose of health and safety in my view but done for control purposes and it should have ended two years ago so i do appreciate mike davenport's comments at the last meeting and i've said so i think that the way the message came across today it was a day for us of celebration february 28th masks off the message that came from downers grove north was masks respectfully recommended and from the district people can choose to mask at any time which from my reading and my perspective sounded kind of a definite bias toward keep your masks on we prefer masking i would have said hey you don't have to wear your mask today it's a time to celebrate this is a wonderful thing the open meetings act for the last talk talk about irreparable harm for the december and the january meetings when the protocols were set in place in my view illegally and in violation of the open meetings act to limit public attendance to only 20 individuals and choose the smallest meeting venue where many people were turned away in the cold my son was one of them and my son was one of the mass plaintiffs in the suit against the governor and i'm sure that you're you're aware of that but he wanted to speak and he couldn't get in and he was so cold he had to go home so this was irreparable harm those two meetings will never get those back he'll never have an opportunity to address the board again but i do appreciate and i from what i've heard that some changes have been made that there's no longer a 20 person limit and i'd like to know more about how that came about there are 4 930 students enrolled and that means double that number of parents that haven't had an opportunity to address the board because they've been discouraged from doing so next the survey for strategic plan there's a request for input outstanding and i read the the attachment i read the summary and the strategic plans has a lot of words but they they don't mean anything to me examples validate change through data and regular feedback well i want to know what kind of change are we validating are we validating not teaching true american history or the 1619 project are we validating more equity programs that we think are toxic to our students and not helpful increase student voice we want our students challenged we want our students highly educated we don't want them sent to safe spaces because they won't be able to make it in the world thank you [Applause] that concludes public comment okay communication's an announcement jenny hank anything on london yeah we had a meeting on friday yeah we actually had two meetings since we um last met in january a lot of it's probably taking care of itself we looked at the covert related pto bill they were waiting on additional information which would offer more protection for fully vaccinated employees and unvaccinated employees would have an opportunity to get vaccinated within the first five weeks once the bill takes effect in order to receive the same protections um there was still concern as to the sunset of the bill whether it was the end of the school year or the end of the executive order or only when an executive order or emergency authorization was in place we were still waiting on a ruling in the lawsuit relating to the coven mitigations the illinois house voted to extend their remote participation for six additional months the substitute teacher shortage was also discussed at that time retired teachers are now allowed to substitute teach for up to 120 days without jeopardizing their retirement status and then there was a quick discussion as to whether high schools withhold diplomas if fees are not paid most school districts don't do this and we don't do this so that was the gist of the january meeting and then as hank said we just had a meeting on friday that administrative leave bill has been amended it no longer contains any double pay language for staff meaning that you don't have to pay them for the emergency non-attendance day and then also pay them for the makeup day it does contain a sunset provision for teachers being tied to the executive order but it does not contain a sunset provision for staff so that would remain in effect in perpetuity while that is kind of a sticking point lend anticipates that the bill is going to pass as written there was some discussion on the sexual misconduct bill relating to educators trying to ensure that employee an employee in one district who has been convicted or accused of sexual misconduct would be prevented from seeking employment in another district without disclosure there's still debating this uh the the issue one of the issues is that this would likely slow the hiring process because you'd have to do a little bit more digging and a background check um let's see there was a brief discussion about a bill related to transfer alternate school and they were going to meet that day to discuss that there was discussion as to the mental health days that were approved it was confirmed that the five mental health days are within the total of 10 sick days and not in addition to and lend is in favor of that they are working on a performance evaluation advisory council bill that would help in the evaluation of teachers they're still watching that then we had a breakout room session and i chose to attend the open meetings act group this legislation would originated in the illinois municipal league so it applies to city council type meetings as well as school board meetings school boards would be able to conduct meetings virtually the requirement would not be tied to an emergency situation any longer there would be need to be public prior notice as to how to access the audio and video how the public can comment and the board would need to follow its established practice as to public comment not make any changes to it this bill would give boards the flexibility outside of a disaster proclamation you know to hold a virtual meeting if necessary if there was inappropriate use of the power to hold a virtual meeting the attorney general's office would step in to review so you know this the pros and cons include that this would move the decision away from just covid mitigations a virtual meeting can also reduce the strain on resources to the local law enforcement community and the open meetings act is meant to provide transparency into the board's work and not provide a forum for comment on such work so this is something that's also still in the works still being reviewed and um we will the other two breakout rooms related to teacher tenure and career and technical education and we will they were also going to meet that day to re-evaluate that and so we'll hear more at the next meeting in march thank you sasha julian um yeah i'll take this off um we approved sopas for district 99 and that is a student online personnel protection act this that means that student data pro it's regular it means that student data privacy law regulates students privacy with online things changes this will make changes for parents in schools as well i can't even read my writing we also approved a tuition increase for about three and a half percent there will be no increase for the summer program we approved a return to learn for students and staff and mass will be strongly recommended kn 9-5 and n95 will be given upon request we are strongly encouraging mass because of the fragility of a lot of the students during close contact situation if one does have some symptoms they are to monitor and test regardless of their vaccination status however when they're at a different location you know where different programs are they are to or where the practices there may differ staff and students must follow that district's procedures well um tonight we approve the grants and um so those were really neat and cool i can hardly wait to see what what comes of all of that and we're also working on providing some webinars for our parents and students on specific topics that will come about and that will probably be into the fall but uh we're working on that right now so those are our two big things thanks to her uh i asked v anything chris talking to report it's pretty quiet when it's not there yeah you mentioned yeah okay all right we have uh two upcoming board meetings we have one on march 7th at 6 30 here in the asc and then again our that will be our workshop march 21st will be a business meeting 6 30 here at the asc um i need an uh motion to adjourn so moved second chris and sherelle all those in favor all right all those opposed we are returned thank you everybody have a good evening you

district 308 i apologize for not really coming sooner we've all been very busy over the last two years but i come here to thank the administrators the teachers the personnel for their dedication and devotion over the last two years no one who woke up on january 1st 2020 could have any fathom to know that we're heading into a two-year plus global pandemic and all that that would entail regarding educating and keeping our children sick of course i also want to thank the school board unpaid elected board members who devote countless hours to serve the sd-308 community are beat to be commended for your efforts over the last two years i want to congratulate our new president ms simonton congratulations and i have a special thank you to dr don mourinho absolutely no one should have to deal with the type of threats vulgar language and basically bullying that took place throughout meetings and different events simply while carrying out your duties to serve this community to serve on this board my friend principal of traveler junior high mindy raniere used to say to us my kids when they were over at homestead it's always better to be kind than to be right i pray that february 28th is the beginning of the end of kobe but if it's not we need to learn the lessons my hope is that the people who had those opinions about the mask issue that they take that passion and turn it into compassion as we heal the communities and i see i only have a little bit of time left i'm gonna close with a family there's many families who need healing in our community there's a family the conscient family they live in my ward four adults in the household went to the hospital with kobe five weeks ago the father peter 35 years old passed away on june january 26th thankfully the other three adults survived we're having a fundraiser at culver's tonight so i'm gonna call everyone in this room i'm gonna call everyone on live stream there's going to be four children because lumila the mother is five months pregnant there's going to be four children who are going to grow up without a father in our school because of this crazy thing and there's many this is just one man there's many others i ask that all of you just leave out of here make your way by culver's a sandwich buy it like ice cream and donate to the catching thing because they they truly need it and uh i appreciate the time thank you thank you wheat good evening my name is kiwana buleris and i am here just to think about last year when i was here look think about african-american history and as we celebrate as we're ending the celebration of our history this month we it will carry on i just want to indicate that we don't have to look that far in the making of history oswego district has made history once again the first is in this election of two african american board members miss latonya simultan and mr mr eugene gatewood tonight i want to congratulate miss latonya simultan in her role as president i also want to thank each of the board members for championing the cause of equity sometimes you may feel that our voices are silent but we are listening we hear your yays and we hear your names and we continue to believe that you are making decisions in the best interest not only for african-american children for latinx children for asian americans for european children but for all of us and so i want to let you know that i support you as a parent if there's anything that you need pegs supports you as a parent organization and when i spoke last year i spoke on behalf of dupage naacp education committee and our efforts towards equity so i just want to congratulate you can congrat congratulate the district and the board for electing ms simonton and to let you know that we support you i want to encourage you to stand you have big decisions to make don't be afraid stand thank you both for speaking in public comment tonight it was good to see support of our community as we move forward with things alderman bug i appreciate your support in your role as an elected official as well i also want to thank representative batnick for having come to our last meeting it was not easy he was the only elected official who did appear spoken public comment and invited conversation to his own role which he didn't have to do so i wanted to give a shout out to representative batnik as well that's pretty much all i've got thank you all for coming the application process um we had an equity advisory committee on february 22nd at the meeting this uh we were up we were updated on the progress of envision 308 uh there was considerable discussion on the survey that was going out addressing and assessing disciplinary trends and inequities efforts to be more inclusive in the hiring process special education and english learner services amongst others this and more will be presented at a future meeting we also discuss dress code and proposed policy and on that faith and dr waller explained to us that the proposed policy went through multiple committees already the equity committee members seem to agree that the proposed policy was much clearer and appropriate relative to the current policy and accounts for all of our students we discussed how student input was incorporating new policy we suggested headwear policy to be clarified and hate speech hate speech be addressed we also discuss student ids we then move to the district's use of disciplinary measures and what needs to be addressed and changed time ran short but hopefully more updates are to come on that it was my first equity advisory committee meeting in my first update of an advisory committee today i enjoyed hearing from such an informed and passionate group of educators and community members and i and you co-chaired that enthusiasm um of the things is something that would help immensely in terms of making sure that our students um and president simon we're getting a little feedback if you could um talk into the mic the people at home are saying they can't hear very well thank you eugene we did have our finances and facilities we went on location at our facility and finance building to take a little tour see how that works learn a little bit more about the departments that we help advise we also covered the audit and did some presentations i know it will be coming here as well on what the auditors had found what changes they had made i don't want to steal thunder from that presentation but it was a good discussion the committee continues to remain engaged but primarily um it was what we expected to see which was nice absolutely and we also talked about the cash flow of the district and dr petschke yeah did a great job of explaining uh the reason why at this unfortunate time we need uh tax anticipation warrants to cover uh our cash flow because by the time we reach april um payroll still needs to be paid and so he also has some creative ideas on what we can do to minimize uh minimize the the impact of the tax anticipation warrants and again i won't steal that thunder i'll allow him to do that presentation soon okay now we will have our presentation from our teaching and learning committee i'm also on on that committee um so we reviewed policy 6.31 high school credit for non-district experiences for course substitutions re-entering students so we could submit feedback to the policy committee basically we are suggesting to the policy committee to add accredited to the description for courses that we would accept from outside the district examples distance learning vocational courses we are also asking for more description around life experiences or ad at the discretion of district administration so clarify a little bit um mrs dalquist presented an update on division 308 to that committee as well she's going to be presenting that in a future meeting part of the conversation at the high school level went into looking at freshman orientation enhancing that and what is shared and experienced at this event because it's a critical transition for all of our students so jen no you did perfectly okay making it look easy now we'll have 6.3 our superintendent's report well good evening board tonight i have a handful of congratulations that are in order uh michael scurra ohs fine arts department chair shared with me that daniel donovan nathan frost mark mars valley at ohs tomorrow night at seven o'clock so hopefully the wolves will continue on their winning streak [Applause] and my final congratulations goes out to coach dan okorin his staff and the ohs girls bowling team as they finished third in the ihsa state finals and brought home a state trophy i had the opportunity to meet the girls and many of their parents last friday night as we held a reception and opportunity to take pictures with the state trophy the last time we had a state finish was 1998 so 24 years ago this is a young team with only one senior so we'll be looking from for big things from next year and also wayney breedlove took fourth place individually in bowling and was an all-state selection so congratulations to the entire team i'm representing ohs district 308 and themselves in excellent fashion so thank you and that is my report for this evening thank you dr sparlin okay now we will have last but certainly not least the student ambassador report thank you uh good evening the student advisory committee had initially planned to meet prior to this board meeting to summarize the results of our extensive student survey centralized on sexual harassment uh however due to attendance purposes we rescheduled for march 8th following this meeting we're planning on summarizing our data in a comprehensive verbal report on the mindsets and knowledge of our student bodies regarding sexual harassment and interpersonal violence we're hoping to analyze this data to understand the needs and awareness of the students we represent and figure out what could account for any barriers to a safe and inclusive learning environment and i would just like to add this second semester we've really seen an uptick in the amount of student outreach to us and i know some board members were included on emails and it's just great to see students i guess maybe the words getting out uh they're uh really reaching out to us from uh even middle school students we had reaching out so on social media i've been included on email change uh just from students from ohs we've both been included on email chains from students across the district so just really great to see that and we invite more students to come up to us and email us or reach out on social media it's great so that is great how can they email you well for us for students they do know our names so you are able just to do a little search and it pops up there's only one colton scenario that i know [Laughter] can we put a button on the district the district website forum that's a teresa question like i think i think you would get more if your kids had an easy way to yeah and i know a lot of students have a lot of really great ideas so we'd love to hear it absolutely that would be thank you okay 7.1 the board of education will elect an officer for the position of vice president nominations are now in order for office of vice president any member of the board may nominate any member of the board including themselves and nominations do not require a second nominations are now open for office of the vice president i would like to nominate mr gaywood i'd like to nominate dominic serran are need to move to the vice presidency bye eugene it was fun having you on this side eugene congratulations congratulations okay 8.1 dr sparlin will introduce mrs dalquist to present in vision 308 community partnerships with her team item 8.1 is a presentation from our work from envision 308 as you know there are four quadrants to envision 308 student learning support for student learning finance and facilities and community partnerships tonight we're going to share a progress regarding quadrant four community partnerships and presenting for this evening are michelle earley teresa comedis dr heidi pajasik and dr jadon waller all right thank you so much for this opportunity to talk about all the great work that this team as well as many other people have been doing so as dr sparlin suggested we are talking through all the different priorities from the community partnership piece don't worry if you can't read all of those statements that are on there because we're going to go through them each individually so the organization on all of the slides this very far left column is the priority that we had established already and then followed by the next column of what we said we would accomplish during we'll spend the bulk of the time there in current progress and then just to remind everyone that tan color at the end is what does success look like by 2026 so every slide follows the same format just wanted to lay that out for everyone and uh dr waller is going to talk about this slide all right so all of you have been privileged to have such a wonderful student ambassadors present each board meeting they have definitely been a highlight to my experience here thus far and so as you know the students worked very hard to create the initial survey that tried to aim to hit different concerns that our high school students may have we also were able to go back and make sure that we included the eva and gold student data on that original survey as well and from there we worked pretty diligently and disaggregated more data looking at mental health sexual harassment representation of lgbtq and black indigenous people of color and ultimately we determined that sexual harassment would be that topic that we really wanted to explore so then the students from that point created a second survey that was specific to sexual harassment they wanted to know students knowledge around education around sexual harassment as well as reporting and safety where are some of these things taking place um in addition to that we also wanted to determine their thoughts around sexual harassment and mental health and so we have captured that data disaggregated it by gender ethnicity and identity as well as other different breakdowns that the students really helped me with the quick trick to help desegregate some of the data because i'm an old lady sometimes and so it was really fun to go through that process with them as well as create some opportunities to find more data as well with dr sparlin and the principals at the high schools in addition to that the students did participate in wi-fi the youth lab participatory action research where they desegregated data from the different um articles that we found and did research with and then from there they did a lot of annotating and disaggregated from there to find common themes and so from that point we have determined that we are going to focus on those big pieces around mental health and student education and um and reporting and so we get together as they indicated um next week um tomorrow myself and dr pajasec is along with dr sparlin and the principals are going to get together as well to discuss um some prior steps before we meet with the student ambassadors next week and um yeah it's been an exciting journey so thank you uh in addition to that and this presentation was to have been given at the last board meeting so that's why you still see will be at the end of february because now we have done a survey out to uh staff where they have indicated their comfort level with key indicators of what we're doing and what needs are for professional development in the future this next slide is all about beneficial partnerships and uh things that we're working with people outside of sd 308 and dr jessica is going to start us off great thank you so we are excited to have a multitude of mutually beneficial partnerships that benefit so what does it look like when all of our departments are underneath one umbrella well we can take and highlight each strength of the department we can go ahead and invite their parent groups to participate and share in um events that we have on our share calendar our adult esl classes family psychologist presentation family nights on how to navigate the education system participate in parent cafes which i'll be talking about in a little bit and all of this working together will open the opportunities for two-way communications between the families and the district so as faith mentioned earlier this is kind of looking where we are all the way to 2026 progress so um provide community chats based on specific topics regarding around dei um our community family um cafes which we have kicked off in january january 12th was our first one so i'm super excited about that um part of the community cafes is working with a framework through be strong families v strong families is a peer-to-peer framework that allows parents to engage in meaningful conversations and highlight their strengths within the parent cafe there are core values core values allow families to engage in meaningful conversations about what matters most and that's strengthening their families those core values are family liberation authenticity vitality collaboration excellence love and spirit the last component of the be strong families are the five protective factors these protective factors are used to provide a safe non-judgment judge non-judgmental opportunity for parents or caregivers to build upon their own protective factor while engaging in conversations and what it means to keep their children safe and family strong and those five protective factors are resilience search relationship support knowledge and communication so we have already held two parent cafes i am very excited about those those have been very well attended i invite all of you guys to join us for march 16th as we talk about nurturing the seeds to grow strong families um the protective factors we will be focusing on next on this month is resilience and communication great and we'll turn it over this next slide to dr waller all right so um i know that michelle early just spoke about the community cafes but i just want to add that they have been a phenomenal experience for our community members and even from our first one we had community members kind of connecting with each other off scene which is really the intention and purpose of this to build community within each other because of what we provided as a district so i just want to commend michelle on all of her hard work it's been a really awesome experience another part of the work that we are doing is trying to highlight our alumni um this year so far we highlighted our alumni who work for our district and we created this beautiful powerpoint and with the support of teresa and her team we shared that with with everyone this school year around thanksgiving because we were thankful for them another big thing that we are doing is amplify the student dei committee at the high school level has named themselves amplify and they are going to be putting on an event april 7th at oswego high school at 7 pm to 8 30 p.m and the purpose of this event is to allow students to highlight their stories and their experiences and their identity in who they are through forms of art or speech or dance so we will have the step team performing as well and then the last bit of the event focuses on a panel which will include alumni as well as current students who will engage in conversations and dialogue about their experiences here in sd 308 so we encourage the community to show up because we know that our students voices are the most powerful and i know that we will learn a lot from them and from each other and theresa i think you had a few things from this slide too sure so just a couple highlights our weekly parent newsletter we're going on year two of that that comes out every friday afternoon as well as the positive stories that we're highlighting on the district social media we've had a bunch of really great things to be celebrating lately and we continue to try to keep populating that with the positive news stories and photos so we encourage you to follow us if you don't and the last component is how are we communicating a lot of this great progress and things that we are pushing forward and just want to remind the community that every board meeting we have an annual report on different topics and those are being displayed and archived on our website and then most recently for student learning we've put together short videos so far four have gone out there'll be two more remaining that will come soon the next piece is this well how will we measure a success uh in community partnerships a year from now and one of the things that we have looked at is that we want to expand this to be parent surveys and publish those results we've had staff surveys so far but we want to expand that and then our next piece we're going to hear from michelle earley all right so this is where we will create the website website page and list of current partners we've already started um drafting a google document with all of our current partners that we partner with right now we will continue to create a website push out that describes our work and offer opportunities for partnerships one of those partnerships is working obviously with family counseling services um and our serc we will continue to provide community chats based on dei we will provide one parent education summit with a course offerings based on dei and dei and then continue to provide community chats based on dei topics and we'll have an annual listing of parent education courses provided collaboratively among various departments have a draft plan for appearance summit and then have a list of community chats that were held wonderful dr waller all right so another big thing that we are looking into doing um is eventually developing affinity groups in order to create an inclusive space for all stakeholders to receive community support in addition we want to celebrate our alumni more officially i know teresa and i will be working on that where we want to really make homecoming a big event for our alumni who are not within the district but those who are also within the district um and then continue working towards creating community events to increase relationships and really making sure that we're working with our different schools to filter some of these events so that we can be more knowledgeable about what the school is doing so that we can collaborate together um i know that mosaic just had an international fest which was very well attended and so an event like that is something that would be beneficial for everyone in the district so we're just working on making sure that we are creating the opportunity to be as transparent and communicative as possible and then i know theresa intends to continue with the weekly parent newsletter and all the pieces to highlight and put all that together and then through the progress of that we'll continue the dashboard next year which will have all the annual reports that we will lay out and then we said a long time ago that in february we would start having a measurement of success at each of these reports and it's february so this is what um that type of slide looks like and i believe dr sparling would like to walk us through that well you said about half of what i was going to say so that's all right uh we do feel we're making progress in this area uh and so tomorrow our what our plan is is to change this tile to blue which would indicate we're making progress but before we do that we'd like to ask the board if you agree with this assessment based off the presentation today i mean i i don't know i have some questions i don't know if anyone else does is this the appropriate time for that yes go ahead and ask go ahead and start your questions wonderful so i'm going to start dr pajasic with family counseling services i know that this has been a great resource for people um maya's understanding is that there's still a co-pay involved even with the interns so is there a method for for folks who could benefit from a research referral to these services to not have to pay a co-pay for the services since that's often a barrier for some of our lower income families that need support the most so they currently don't have that option for us but they do offer a variety of insurance options so they do take they do sliding scale based on income they take a variety of different state plans they accept medicaid which is really important not a lot of our area groups do and they take private pay insurance or or um client self-pay so um they do provide sessions as low as ten dollars per session um which accounts for um the time that their um interns and their and their therapists spend for the cycle educational groups that we provide in district we are currently paying for those through grant funding um and they are very minimal costs to the district for those groups um family counseling services is different than some of our other local counseling agencies because they're a non-profit organization so the the money that they bring in does pay for their personnel their paid interns and the time that they spend so are there any other resources that you've been exploring for the families that can't afford that sliding scale don't have access to medicaid or anything like that at the moment so we are currently exploring a number of other options communities and schools in the aurora area does provide for aurora schools so banars like homestead the wheatlands and wells crossing they do provide free counseling through their interns we also are looking at some other organizations i'm seeking some conversations with aunt martha's because family counseling services is the size they are and they take all of the plans they can typically meet the demand that we have at this time but we definitely want to encourage and continue to build our source of partnerships for all of our families thank you and then um the other question that i have right now is the early intervention programs that michelle you have been running with play groups and things for the community i didn't see any mention of those in this presentation is that still occurring that's one of the community partnerships i know we still do yeah you are correct we are still running the family support center we still offer play groups in the morning and afternoon were housed at long beach elementary school we did increase it to three days a week so we meet with families on monday tuesday wednesday in the aft in the morning in the afternoon that is obviously a free service that's opened up to all of our community families that have children five and under and no cost associated with that for the families no no no can i pick you better than that i'm gonna piggyback on that we were talking in our policy committee it was policy six colon 180 um and a conversation came up in our committee that said the stars sixth graders have nowhere to go after sixth grade is that part of this or could it be part of this could you say that one more with the stars sixth graders so after yeah they had there was nothing for them after this after sixth grade yeah yeah i think that would be special education right that would have to be special editor could we put it under this umbrella so it's just my question it starts as a special education program right community partnership piece we can talk later after this but it wouldn't be this group okay all right well my other question was did we publish do we publish the five essentials survey that's a good question i know we've been getting those yeah i got another email because i haven't filled out mine yet either but um i got it and i did fill them out i haven't filled out my one for my district either but um do we publish those and can we send out i mean clearly we're still getting emails about them but um just curious how we remind people to do them um yeah i know we get results as a district but do we publish those sure and they're available on the website from the state and as linked as part of the school report card pieces too okay we do all right and then my other question was more for you so some of these meetings that you talk about these cafes so i know i signed up for one you could be mad at me later that i did not attend because i got busy right so i feel like people get busy and there's a lot of people in this district and there's a lot of parents who really have good intentions and really bad follow-through like me or a lot of work going on i'm just curious if we record any of these and we post them somewhere so because of the nature of the cafe these are not recorded cafes we do have our parent university sessions that are um supported by the scrc um in a rory university those in fact are recorded because we break out into breakout rooms and we have very open discussions um it's just a it's a privacy issue we don't record so for example one of the questions for like for one of the groups that we've done are like what is the the hardest thing about asking for help so like people get into vulnerable spaces um which is pretty amazing with the amount of people that we have but so that's the the piece for not necessarily recording um but i did do the parent university at the scrc last week you want to come and do another one i'll make sure i communicate that it was actually a pretty cool experience so are these held at all uh different times so that some of our parents that maybe work in a second third shift are able to attend or is it strictly held in the evenings um right now we're housing them and we're holding them in the evening because now things have kind of lifted up a little bit along with covid or kovid policies i'm hoping to offer them in person and throughout the district buildings um in our district and as well as still keeping the online model um as well for families that work um we definitely can look at increasing it right now we're just housing it once a month in the evenings in the evening from 6 30 to 7 30.

i would just like to state before i get into these and read these from a perspective as a parent school board member and that just what an outstanding job and the fact that you are just looked up to in the community as being wonderful young ladies in every which way shape or form so that's the acknowledgement that your parents should be very proud of i'm sure your coaching staff is as well and to be winners on the court and show all that those other attributes the fact is that you're really good young ladies is just an outstanding uh tribute to the city of crown point so thank you and congratulations [Applause] we will want to get a picture so i'll read them and then if you just go back to where you're at and then um we'll we'll take it from there lily stoddard jessica caruthers [Applause] mariana maldonado nikki geodermas [Applause] olivia santiago emily phillips [Applause] zoe wells it's hard because i recognize him in basketball uniforms and then like all dressed up like kind of like kusu abby foster brooklyn smith [Applause] ava zielkowski christian fraley ellie rawls [Applause] uh ray [Applause] caitlyn jager [Applause] camden gleam [Applause] uh just make sure to miss any players because it looks like we got all coaches next couple managers okay all right uh we'll get to them trust me i know you're in here the snack's good uh coach chris seymour [Applause] coach scott reed [Applause] i'd be remiss at this point not to mention coach reed is retiring after how many years coach 40 years so congratulations to coach green [Applause] uh amanda stillman [Applause] ashley parrish [Applause] taylor tindall [Applause] ernie sanford brendan ward paige sanborn [Applause] ken kelly benson [Applause] maddie manax [Applause] jamie pierce [Applause] dan merrill [Applause] okay so uh with that congratulations uh where's mr martinez mr marcin got a couple points to add sure i just i think everybody knows about the excellence that our girls are showing on the basketball court but uh what's important to us is kind of what you said mr angel about what good people they are and how well they've represented our school not this year but in previous years as well great people they are and i want to thank coach cyber uh and his staff and what for the job that they do and the time they spend with our girls day in and day out uh practices and games in the off season it's a 12 month a year deal now and our girls and our coaching staff just do a great job of putting in the effort it takes to be successful but again regardless of david won and lost games and what the result is on the court all of them are good students and just represent us in such a positive way we can't [Applause] these girls they've been on the [Applause] while we're getting the picture are there parents out in the audience if you're here for the girls basketball team anyone i know we've got a wife and a daughter over here for a girls basketball team all right thank you very much girls if some of you can go on that side we want you to kind of hang out while we acknowledge the wrestling team as well so just go over there ask mr marshall nick to get out of the way [Music] all right well i don't i don't know dr terrell i'm pretty sure it's a safe bet we've never had so many state champions in this room at the same time before it might need i don't i don't even think we need a fact check on that one so pretty impressive um as mr angel said uh before even getting into the commendation what an amazing group of young men young ladies and that's you know somewhat why we asked you guys to stay and stay in the room for uh for for the boys to go as well um you know many many times throughout the season things are taking place in the community and you get in conversations about what an unbelievable run the girls basketball team is having and the next thing you know someone's talking about well have you paid attention to what the boys wrestlers are doing and um for for one school corporation to have such success that you know all of you have given in a short run is pretty amazing and the thing is or possibly the scary thing is i i think you guys have had such an impact on the youth behind you that i would not be surprised to see this continue um you're talking about eight-year-old boys that maybe thought they were going to play basketball now they want to wrestle you know and i'm no no kidding you know it's uh it's contagious so that is something that's an impact on our community with your your um you know your your behaviors and the respect that you have and and everything else that uh will just it'll last for a very long time so thank you for for that um excellent so as we said uh the the crown point high school wrestling teams being named state for being named state champions at the 2022 ihsa wrestling state finals and three states in champion individuals three runner-ups that uh now i'm going to get back to the team but i'm going to go through read to read the accommodation to you guys i'll have to paraphrase a little bit but resolution accommodation crown point board of school trustees is honored to commend the 21-22 crown point high school wrestling team for notorious achievement we hereby resolve the board of school trustees for the crown point community school corporation wishes to express sincere congratulations to the 2122 crown point high school wrestling team for the prestigious honor of being named state champions at the 2022 ihsa team wrestling state finals and uh something that i i also don't know is that well understood by everybody but actually kind of state champs in a couple varieties correct the dual state champions and then the and then uh um was that a pretty clear record they changed the point system over the years but uh this team set a state record for points achieved at state we broke um we broke the state record it was early in the tournament but we were one so there was like last year's record which i don't even think we were in the semis yet we broke that record and then people kept talking about another record and so someone's like it's 161 i'm like what we're we're at like 160 dollars and we started the finals so we were on the way to breaking a few no that was pretty amazing and also i don't uh i'm not very active at all or look at social media often but i will say that the favorite tweet i've seen in the last couple months was anyone anywhere and uh it's pretty hard to support somebody to be that bold except when they've accomplished what you guys have accomplished i mean i had i would say tell stories about all of your achievements all night but i you know i was so in my mid-40s sitting on a couch on a friday afternoon and you know next thing you know a group text message starts with six guys all scattered around the state that we went to high school with saying hey you following this uh found the match in illinois when you guys were at mount carmel and uh you know going one one match at a time just seeing how this is going to shake out it was just a really neat run and uh you know we can't say enough about it but um let's go through we have uh our individual state champions who had jesse mendez was he's practicing this evening right he's not able to be here he was at 138 i'll find his i'm not going in order of what's here so i might have to flip through him um how about logan frazier at 126.

i just want to point out five um prepays that we did that were not typical that you will not see every month and that would be for our debt service and pension payments that we do in january and july each year so you'll see that our total prepays for the month of january 2022 are exceptionally higher higher than normal uh total prepays one million eight hundred one thousand six eighty seven ninety two did anyone have any questions about that okay all right and then we've got um some claims that are dated today february 28 2022 was there anything in on this list that anyone had any questions about okay all right so we've got total um regular claims dated today 228 000 17.96 and are we ready to go ahead and move on to the fund report sure all right all right fund report ending january 31st 2022 ending balance and education fund at 2 million 16 365 dollars and 51 cents in operations you'll see there it's a fourth one down fund 300 a total ending balance of 1 million 500 2 832.87 total for all funds on the last page page 5 is seven million two hundred nine thousand four hundred twenty dollars and ninety eight cents next in your finance packet you'll see the depository statement balance in all banks at the end of january twenty twenty two you'll see less outstanding checks there for bank 10 and then you're also going to see an outstanding deposit there this month so if you look at that ending balance january fund balance for all all bank balances you'll see that that number is identical to fund balances on the fund report and then lastly you'll see um expenditures that were paid in february 2022 at a bond 2021 total expenditures equaled 300 249.47 added to the balance forward from july 21st through january 2022 our total expenditures paid out of bond 2021 is three million one hundred seventy six thousand three hundred sixteen dollars and twenty eight cents pending no questions i'd like to recommend for approval okay can i get a motion to approve yes motion in a second all in favor all right next item on the agenda is reports first we have the assistant superintendent's report dr yeah so i gave you one of these so if you want to pull out this little packet of some data a few times in a year i like to share some assessment data with you so in february we look at our nwea data remember that nwea is um the only assessment that we give from k to high school so k to 10 takes this three times a year um so what we're looking at right now on page one we're first going to look at the scores from the fall so that you can compare that to the winter so page one here and if you want to kind of just ignore the table at the top and just check out the graphic it's much simpler so you have your grade levels and the orange diamond there is actually the benchmark that we're trying to hit and this is just measuring growth so you can see where we hit our goal for growth and where we didn't hit our goal for growth so that first page is math you can quickly flip over and look at the language arts see where we are with there again we want to try to hit that orange diamond area of growth and that's from the fall if you flip over to page three this is winter so this is what the students just took last month so then you can see the improvements in the game from there so every grade level then did hit their benchmarks compared to fall so that's great and then our high school does not take winter testing since they have so much other testing going on they don't want to lose that instructional time and so for math and both for language arts all grade levels hit their their growth which is great so i like that just because it's a quick snapshot it's easy to see just a district-wide look um at where everyone is i just want to share that with you also i also wanted to share some other upcoming we're getting into testing season so i'm going to share with you some of our upcoming assessments that are happening so we have our sats happening for our juniors coming up then we have our ire three which is for our third graders and that window opens in march 7th so as we know that's the reading proficiency in the state for third graders however there is a change to that this year so the doe opened that up for second graders so school districts could opt in if we wanted to allow our second graders to take that it's still the third grade test but we can often um to use that as a different data point we always already have plenty of data on our k2 students and we didn't want to give up that instructional time and give them more testing the only benefit that some teachers are seeing with that is that they can kind of prepare the second grade teachers can see what the test looks like in order to help prep their students a little bit more but we didn't feel like that was was beneficial enough to give up that instructional time also even if our second graders pass they're still going to have to take the same assessment in third grade they'll just take an abbreviated version so some of our neighbors also opted out cloverdale and clay city also opted out however they were just contacted by the doe and told that they will be taking it because they need the data sample so our prediction is that this is just kind of one step closer to moving towards standardized testing for second graders um and they need that baseline data so that's that's my prediction where where and why that's happening but greencastle did not opt into that second grade and fortunately we were not told that we were going to do that so so that's good so we'll see what the future brings for that um also we have a different high ability testing platform that we're going to be using it will be all digital we'll get the results back really quickly and we screen for high ability for kindergarten second and fifth grade so that will be happening in the month of march before spring break so we're excited about that and then gold i learn for our grades three through eight testing will happen in april so everybody's getting rev revving up for for all of the testing um you will be uh you will be requesting approval tonight on our summer school so i just wanted to give you some more information on what that will look like so our elementary and our middle school last year if you remember we tried to jump start so we did it right before school started in july we didn't see any significance and the data changing doing a jump start you know it's just something else let's let's try as a different strategy um so we didn't see that being any any benefit to that so we were we're going to go back this year just to doing a june um summer school for for k8 that will run concurrent with our high school programs um so elementary we will have approximately 75 students or we're going to invite 75 students of our current k to 4th grade and that will be a two-week program also our middle school we're excited mr white has some really great ideas and things that he wants to try differently so our middle school approach will be a summer camp style in computer science utilizing our fab lab so we're going to open that up to current fourth through seventh graders and whoever is interested in that and so they're gonna have the opportunity to come for two weeks and learn how to use all of the equipment create some cool projects and we're going to be able to build up some leaders in our students that will be able to kind of generate excitement and stuff throughout the student body in the fall i think that's a great uh exciting strategies we're excited about that and then the high school will continue to run their credit recovery and a variety of courses for in-person and online so a lot to get ready for this summer great yeah busy time yeah thank you next is superintendent's report mr gibney yeah so just a few things this month obviously february we know that we have the second count day of the year which can impact school funding our february count we're at 1744 students so that's down 29 students from the fall but typically you know schools do see that's not drastically different than a statewide trend you have early graduates you have some dropouts you have some families that move so while we did lose students it's nothing that's catastrophic we do have a rather small junior and senior class i expect those numbers to hopefully increase come next fall with replacing a smaller outgoing class but hopefully another really big group of kindergartners um and on that topic we're going to have kindergarten roundup april 12th and 14th um from three to seven at the path in deer meadow um so we're excited to uh to get get that out and get those kids excited and used to our buildings um alongside that we'll also get out our registration for her to uh for our preschool program to hopefully build on that in year two this is really kind of the first year of having the community style preschool program continuing to work the best we can on returning to pre-pandemic policies and procedures obviously we saw the lifting of the mask mandate during the school day and then obviously beginning today we rolled back on the requirement of masks on the school buses based on the update from the cdc i have also had a high school student olivia headley finished 20th in the state um and i think it was the 50 freestyle competition and that's a significant accomplishment for her and based on a lot of the athletes that she competed against so i wanted to mention that and then this past weekend i think it was 12 there were 12 students in mrs that attended the isma solo [Music] thank you solo ensemble the isma competition and all 12 students earned gold so which is takes a lot of hard work a lot of time and dedication by students and mrs munoz so that was a really awesome thing we're moving forwards with the building project obviously uh you know in february in february still february earlier this month obviously we awarded a contract you know they're going to mobilize beginning in april but we have a meeting scheduled for march 10th with weddle brothers construction and we hope to learn more then or we will learn more then about the sequencing or phasing of the project at the high school and how we may be disrupted here at the end of the year and obviously moving forwards we're going to have to be flexible and make adjustments with our space and get used to doing things uh different and knowing um the outcome uh that of long term have a meeting scheduled for tomorrow with braver brothers on our new maintenance storage building over at the transportation center we've approved that contract already and obviously expect to break grounds hopefully soon so we work in getting maintenance out of the high school footprint and then obviously the final thing march 18th through 25th is our spring break so that's the friday before and then the monday through wednesday i know everyone's been working really hard and i think a lot of people are probably looking forward to that time to return recharge their batteries for the final sprint so that's all i have just a few updates for this okay month thank you next item on the agenda is old business and we have no old business so we moved to new business the first thing is an approval request for the 2020 23 occupational services contract yep so as is customary this time of year mrs sullivan has submitted her recommendation continue with mrs mrs real for next school year her rate will remain the same as it is currently and she'll work 12 to 14 hours a week average next school year and be paid for out of our federal grant it's my recommendation that the board uh approve this request as presented give a bush can i give a second i'll second okay i have a motion in a second any questions or discussions hearing none all in favor all right all opposed motion passes next is an approval request for the 2022 summer school yep so i won't say a whole lot because jenny or dr french shared this information earlier but in your board packet you saw the financial commitment of those programs of course we'll submit that to the doe and they reimburse at a rate of 105 and so it's my recommendation that the board approve our summer school request and then we can begin filling all of those slots and advertising that information yeah i'll make a motion a second time okay motion second any questions hearing none all in favor all right all opposed quotient passes next item is an approval request for authorization to advertise notice of a public hearing for building projects yep um so as we uh discussed at our last last board meeting when we awarded the construction contract bids came back higher than higher than expected we've made adjustments and eliminated the off-site baseball and softball fields as a result of the project i'm really going to focus in on finishing off the high school project the way it should be completed while also protecting the other projects and after hearing uh from the community there's a lot of excitement around that in support of that and so we have to hold a public hearing for financing to complete that work and so all this is is authorization to advertise the notice of a public hearing in march and then a second one at a regular march yeah i'll make a motion for that okay motion in a second any questions or discussions hearing that all in favor all right it's all opposed to passing next item is an approval request for an interleavable agreement between the city of greencastle and greencast community school corporation yep so um so i've been working with uh mr shields and actually mr shields been working with a couple of uh young ladies in the high school and i know i'm gonna mispronounce their their name i believe it's cadence shaner and madison voorhees they had an opportunity to they're in mr shields class at the high school and they had an opportunity to visit the fab lab at the middle school and they really enjoyed what they saw and their question was is they would like to have something like that at the high school to uh just to continue to enhance the type of education that they receive there so mr shields and the girls worked on a proposal to present to the redevelopment commission so the greencastle redevelopment commission funded our our middle school lab and roughly 197 thousand dollars investment for equipment and ongoing training and support and so the girls made their presentation it was last wednesday and the green castle redevelopment commission would like to fund this endeavor at an amount of 195 thousand dollars so this will go to essentially kind of adding in some tools and repurposing some of the existing tools in our what's the old wood shop and adding in some uh you know the cnc router and adding in some 3d printers and laser cutters and we'll continue just to kind of build the program up and offer teachers and students that choose to use that equipment just additional capabilities so we're very very proud of the girls for for making that presentation but then obviously i also want to you know extend thanks to the redevelopment commission for funding this endeavor and initiative and so what we have just like last time is that interlocal agreement just lays out the the contractor expectations of moving forwards so it's my recommendation that the board approved that agreement so okay have a motion in a second all in favor aye next on the um agenda is approval request for some donations one from beech grove united methodist church to any uh taxonomicus intermediate in the amount of six hundred dollars and the second being kathleen russell to greek castle high school deca club in the amount of five hundred dollars i get a motion to approve those yeah make a motion to approve absolutely a second time yeah motion is second all in favor all right all opposed motion passes thank you for those yes absolutely last thing on the agenda is other business does anyone have any other business i just want to say i think it's really really cool that the two young ladies were able to make that presentation and do that i mean it's a it's a great thing with our community but um it's really just really awesome to see two young people you know stand up and do that so yep kudos anyone else last item on the agenda is a journalist i'll make a motion second okay motion second all in favor all right all opposed motion passing thank you everybody thank you everyone careful going home thank you

i wanted to wish the bears and the wildcats good luck this week as they play in the sectionals mr freezey any comment we've been having some great meetings with our legislators and i'm very proud of the work we've done as a district and as a leader in our indianapolis community to make sure that our policy makers understand where we're coming from and took a little drive by by the transportation facility today can't wait to see it yeah it is it my turn um i don't have much just want to say um first uh thank you for dr crowell for did she leave oh well thank you anyways okay i hope she can hear me um but i want to say too um one of the things that has kept me in lawrence and i've said it before was how well that we do conflict and so i've had some issues and i appreciate the leadership that has um come alongside during those times and i want to add to that also one of my favorite renee brown quotes i don't know if i can say your name but i'll say it vulnerability is the center of difficult emotions but it's also the birthplace of every positive emotion that we need to live out life and so as we're going through the audit as we're going through all these changes that there will be difficult emotions that we will have to sit in and wrestle in and that is okay and i am appreciative of that because i've had to sit in some stuff with lawrence and we have conflicted well and um it's great to talk about the positive and you know all the awesomeness but conflict can be hard and so i appreciate the work that's going forward but i know that there's going to be some stuff that we're going to have to set in and so i couldn't think of a better um team to do that with so i think that's my um that's it for me thank you community board as we come down to the end of a black history month being this is february 28th let me just commend the principles and the building leaders of the amazing artifacts facts karen past and facts i didn't even know about in celebrating black history month i mean just absolutely powerful statement from students powerful artistic expression of what this might mean to them and i think that speaks volume of our building leaders as well as our students in this district so as a board we thank you for the celebration and then even though it's the closing month 365 days is actually the celebration of all diversity in our community and we continue to do that for 365 days but we do highlight black history month thank you dr smith thank you mr president um let me echo with mrs vice president mustin pointed out our work with legislators the board has uh a tremendous responsibility to have advocacy and partnership with our local legislators and so behind the scenes so folks on the record will know the board of education is truly active with our state legislature although this is not a budget year it's still very important the topics that are being debated at the state legislature and so these people sitting here at the dais and mr friji have all taken a great amount of time to advocate on our behalf for our students i just want to remind the board that we will be in the audience and attendance at the state of the city address hosted by the lawrence chamber it will be held here at the lacc on thursday so i look forward to seeing all of you there as we support our city and then we talked about transportation roger we can put it out there we will be hosting our dedication of our new transportation facility on march 24th at 10 a.m in the morning we will have the formal dedication of that new building so that will be exciting and also mr notre a little birdie told me that our work of equity has gone beyond the walls of lawrence township and someone told me that we need to arrive in chicago in a few weeks to present on the national stage with our good friend dr mayfield on the work that we're doing with equity so that is huge for the school district we'll be on the national uh ascd's the curriculum conference held in chicago national curriculum conference and our team will be there presenting on our work so that i'm excited to be a part of that and having our district at that level that's all i have tonight mr president thank you dr smith boy just a reminder our next board meeting work session will be on march 14th that will be a 5 30 work session again march 14th and that will be a work session and monthly board meeting in the month of march beginning at 5 30 p.m are there any other questions or comments i'll take a motion to adjourn so moved second who's second by consent we are concerned adjourn thank you for your time

but for what it's worth attending virtually is a lot easier on working parents or people with small kids at home or and then my last question really i guess is geared more towards teresa so can you remind people how to send in stories for your fancy little newsletter that i get every friday of course so um we actually have an email address for the district just stories at sd308.org so if you ever see anything cool or you want to share something please drop us an email we would love to feature it either in the newsletters or through social media and and dr waller i know that the dei committee was working on community partnerships is this the manifestation of some of that work that that working group is doing correct so i asked michelle early to attend our dei committee in november and so she began to spearhead the work so actually the people so we should be thanking them thank you to the dei committee members who chose to focus their strengths on community and so the dei committee members who signed up for that have been supporting michelle and i and heidi in running those community cafes and they've all had their roles and michelle trained all of them so yes that is one subcommittee from the dei committee the other outcome from that is the student dei committee and we're actually starting to venture into junior high and recruit students at that level as well thank you i just want to ask you to repeat [Music] so amplify amplified takes place april 7th oswego high school 7 p.m to 8 30 p.m and our next virtual parent cafe takes place march 16th from 6 30 to 7 30.

[Applause] and we had sammy going 152. [Applause] congratulations all right and individual state runner-ups uh gavin andreas 106. and orlando cruz 182. thank you congratulations okay so those were our state champions and our state runner-ups and then let's go through the order of the rest of the team we have nature novacic evan cruz [Applause] jesse jesse mendez who we know is not here nick tina as soon as i said it nick tatini cody goodwin anthony white will clark paul clark liam begley [Applause] coach lorick and uh coach hawkins [Applause] vincessa coach tessa okay well we know we have some other other coaches and uh we've seen that as well that all the all the the um the help their coaching staff and um i always think that we can't thank the parents enough for all the time that they put into things as well and uh you know i'm sure they're all as proud as can be so congratulations guys uh um how about dr terrell would you like to say anthony about the wrestling team from what yeah parents do we have parents out here raise your hands parents thank you for your support bill do you have anything you want to add with this group um that's what we really appreciate so tremendous guys with important next year we've got scores back i didn't have one more thing i want to share dr terrell showed it to me and we we need to read a couple of emails that have just come across we had one that was directed to administrator here he said hey i want to give you some cp people a shout out i had the pleasure of working as a floor worker at the ihsa rest state wrestling finals last weekend i worked the wrestling in quotes wrestling entry area where all wrestlers and coaches were sent to their mats to compete i had a lot of contact with all the competitors and coaches over the two-day tournament i just want you to know as an administrator that your cpu wrestling coaches and athletes showed great sportsmanship throughout the entire tournament obviously the team is a juggernaut demolishing this demolishing the state scoring record sometimes those in quotes again powerhouse teams are arrogant and diva-ish and expect everyone else to bow to them i saw none of that from crown point even though they were the dominant team there your coaches were a pleasure to work with they are polite humble and fun to be around the same could be said of your kids as a worker and a long time coach i appreciated their positive behavior they definitely represented crown point well by the way the coaches that i had the most contact were with coach lorich hawkins and sassa all great representatives of cp have a great day brother we had another one that was sent dr cho wasn't there a third there's two on the second page here yep here's one uh oh i said just a quick note of congratulations on the dominant performance of your wrestling program this past weekend really impressive wrestling and coaching but maybe even more impressive was the way your kids conducted themselves it was great to see and applaud your leadership this is this is from the director of athletics at penn that's pretty special to hear from somebody you know of that to statute to reach out to tell you guys how how great you were as competitors um and then jesse received one directed towards him for while at the state finals this individual's family was sitting next to the mendez family on several occasions jesse came up and dressed members of his family and my family all mentioned how much respect he showed to his family following his championship match i was blown away by his acknowledging the entire crowd not just cp after winning his four state championship in his post-match speed speech he once again acknowledged all wrestling fans it has been a pleasure to witness this young man's exceptional high school career so guys best of luck to you next year and all the seniors um you're going to do great in everything you choose to do in life so congratulations uh hey miss barsnack anything yeah again i just want to congratulate all of our wrestlers coach hawkins coach lord what a great job our young men did the whole season and throughout the state tournament and it certainly died in indianapolis and one of the things that i really love about our wrestlers is that i can count on you know they're good they're good people they're good kids they're good students and uh just like what we would expect all of our student leaders to be in school uh our wrestlers exemplify that so uh more than anything just like mr warren said and dr carroll and mr gorilla that's what i'm most proud of i witnessed what you guys did downstate but again the way you conducted yourselves and you had humility you had honor and you just did everything that we wanted prom point athlete to do and for that i'm very grateful for for making us all look good and representing not only our school but our community and all the people that came before you as well as the younger people who come after you uh you set the example and uh i want to just congratulate coach lauren for the job that he did as well as coach hawkins and uh one of the things about coach lark that you may not know but during the school day uh brandon works with some of our most average students who's got some significant physical disabilities and he does such a great job with those students and then he moves on to coach wrestling after school and uh i just feel like there's as far as a faculty member who deserves a state championship i don't know if there's anyone more deserving than brandon for the work he's done over the years day in and day out with an after this population that he does and with great compassion and making those families feel good about being in school so coach lord coach hawkins great job and uh coach seibert all uh exemplified our leaders as coaches i also want to give a shout out to tracy and annie and jen for being you know behind the scenes doing all that they do for those programs because it's not easy to be a wife of a coach with all the things that they have to deal with over the course of the year not only that but their professionals all work in our school system uh of course tracy is a principal of taft and he's an assistant principal for us and jen also works at the high school with uh some of our students who need additional help so again just a feel-good moment for everybody i can go on and on talking about how great i i feel about all this so thank you for everything that everybody does we appreciate you and certainly i do so thank you very much [Applause] any before while you guys are getting together for your picture uh one thing i want to say about both groups wow your state trophies and everything that girls you've brought in over the last four years wrestlers what you've done i think the bigger thing here is they're great kids like you've heard and i could go on like russ just said with stories but i'm going to tell you early on in the year my wife and i are sitting there on a saturday watching our wrestling team wrestle jesse's not here tonight but one of the wrestlers came off and did not perform as well as they thought they should have that day and may or may not have thrown their head gear and jesse went to them and said pick it up and don't let it happen again and spot him on the button said we're better and that's that's the kind of thing they are girls play on the varsity plays on a friday night right before our boys varsity team plays so lily again one of our best athletes representing the girl team is sitting on the side of the bleachers right there where there's a stairs come up you didn't even know i saw you do this and she was finishing her stuff or whatever her mom brought her in her tupperware dish and she had just set it down and this little guy comes running up the bleachers and he has this pretzel and cheese in that plastic thing you know that every elementary kid is just dying to eat and he comes running up and he starts to trip over the step lily catches the pretzel and cheese and then helps him get up and like and then just like encourages them as he goes up and i'm like you know what here's two of our best performing athletes doing great things for our community that's our kids and that's repeated over and over and over again and we're not done gymnastics is still going and they'll be here hopefully at our uh next meeting and as we go forward as well so thank you guys appreciate it let's get some pictures and you guys can get out of here and have a great evening your things here tracy that was the pressure thank you well that was certainly one of the longer combinations that we we've had but uh well deserved so we appreciate them all coming this evening their participation here this this evening was great item three patrons comments uh we do not have any this evening move to item 4 to consent agenda dr terrell your consideration this evening we have thank you dr charles for the recommendation uh as presented we have a motion to approve second moved by mr smith and second by mr angel any questions or comments for dr turtle on the consent agenda if not all those in favor signify by saying aye aye opposed emotion carries 5-0 the action items we have 5.1 amendments to the standard agreements between cromwell city school corporation gibraltar and skillman for multiple projects dr terrell thank you so tonight we're bringing to you amendments both for gibraltar and also skillman as you guys know we were very successful in our bond sale and raised additional dollars which therefore allows us to do additional projects and because of the additional projects there were additional costs that go with the architectural work that goes with it and obviously the construction work that goes with that as well i've heard a recommendation to approve the amendments to accurately reflect the changes in the scope of the 21 excuse me 2021 projects as attached we have a motion to approve a second let's move by was it sorry bet mr baby moved by mr babjack seconded by mr angel any questions or comments for dr terrell i do know that i want to also thank dion for being present this evening dance here like look if we uh have any questions i would assume he'd be happy to answer them as well sorry if not all those in favor signify by saying aye aye opposed that motion carries 5-0 and it's that dm but excuse me mr casares thank you for joining us this evening in case there are any questions there 5.2 is the lightspeed amplification sound system purchase uh let's go into mr hardman thank you mr morgan uh first of all i'd like to thank mr uh mr gill who's back in the back running our our sound and our system uh for accomplishing the task of getting these uh next three items on uh the agenda uh for your approval tonight uh this is uh a for the light speed uh amplification system that goes within our classroom uh this was actually approved by you in uh by the school board on april 26 2021 it was under a qpa contract that is no longer being uh honored for light speed so therefore there's a new qpa contract by pe ppm as you can see in the analysis of this uh the the actual cost now for these uh uh 425 additional light speed amplification systems uh will be 23 less on this new contract which is uh uh which is good and uh seeking your approval tonight to to purchase these the original contract that we had we did purchase the light speed amplification for winfield elementary school and then it was after that as we were trying to purchase these additional ones for the rest of the corporation we had to make the transition to a different qpa because the first one was not being honored so this will this these 425 amplification sound systems will fulfill what we need throughout the district in every classroom every space that we have for our children for our students for our teachers seeking your approval tonight to to purchase 425 light speed amplification sound systems thank you mr hartman your recommendation to approve the purchase of 425 light speed application sound systems with the flex mic and media connector from light speed technologies incorporated a cost of 555 thousand 75 dollars in a pe ppm i'm not sure qpa contract we have a motion to approve no move this motion by mr angel on second by mr smith any questions or comments from mr hartman mr hartman or mr gill is there like a life span on these they're like like 20 years 10 years i think they're rated about 15 years okay thank you any other questions if not all those in favor signify by saying aye aye opposed that motion carries five zero and uh 5.3 is the clear touch interactive panels mr hartman um in addition to the amplification systems uh we are seeking your approval this evening to purchase 425 clear touch 86 inch interactive panels with document cameras webcams and the mounting carts for installation uh currently we did purchase 50 of those for winfield as they were going through the renovation this now will be to complete the uh the ability to have a interactive panel in all of our classrooms uh for uh for the upcoming school year i would like to to again thank mr gill thank his staff thanks sabrina uh for the training that they've been able to provide to all of our our staff at winfield we're learning a lot and we'll be planning actually on friday to roll out 425 of screens like that that are touchscreen bigger than that in our classrooms for teachers to use students to use and interact with so we're excited about this this purchase so this evening seeking your approval to purchase 425 clear touch 86 inch interact panels document cameras webcams and adjustable mount cards thank you mr hardman for the recommendation to purchase the 425 clear touch 86-inch interactive panels motion to approve second move by mr smith and second by mr angel questions or comments for mr gill mr hartman i think uh so mr hartman you said that winfield has had 50.

we just will be getting ready to send out the flyer and social media and there will be a link for you to sign up once you sign up you will then receive a zoom link to um participate in the cafe kevin just one more quick question so on slide i don't know this thing kills me slide 11 maybe on mine where it talks about um fostering partnerships with universities trade schools mental health business so i know of at least two companies that we kind of partner with what if somebody else in the community maybe i'm thinking more trade school for this right what if somebody has an opportunity where they could bring in some high school kids to work with is it you guys that they contact specifically or who would that be so they would contact any of the people that they're wanting to work with and we could be adding to this so that could be me so trade school type okay contact faith that's what i heard that's f dollquist and sd308.org okay any more questions i just uh had a quick comment um you said well parent engagement happens when relationships are created i just want to say i appreciate that acknowledgement and all the effort that you're taking to make that happen thank you so much yeah thank you for all your hard work thank you very much thank you okay 8.2 dr sparlin will introduce dr pesky to present in vision 308 facilities plan all right thank you dr petsky item 8.2 facility plans go ahead um so as part of the envision 308 plan we've got the finance and facility area so i went through the first um three goals in light blue with the uh with the board of education two meetings ago and so today i'm just going to review the last two which relate directly to our facilities so the the first is a general maintenance update so the goal there is to review the need for general maintenance for the next 10 years and allocate funds accordingly um so that's kind of the work that we're engaged with uh with kluber architects and all of our buildings to take our deferred maintenance plan from the last five years and grow that into a scheduled maintenance plan for the next 10 years so some of the updates that i have for the board is uh we have reviewed the 2015-2020 deferred maintenance plan we've engaged kluber architects to develop an envision 308 master facility plan we've been updating the central office maintenance staff on the projects and uh some of the priorities to get their input and feedback um we have finished conducting all of the facility feedback meetings and that included the the architects with the building principal and the building engineer of every school and then we presented a process to update the finance and facility board advisory committee to keep them uh involved in the work that we're doing as well so um we've uh we've begun the facility feedback meetings with the strategic planning team and what that is is there's a team of about six central office central maintenance staff that then focus on like grounds they focus on they focus on preventative maintenance corrective maintenance and uh things of that nature and we've got one that connects specifically with the with the buildings as well so some of the things uh next year that we'd like to come to the board with to show that we're making some progress is really prioritize the capital projects and develop a timeline for some completion of those most urgent priorities so using feedback from stakeholders document evaluate and prioritize those projects all projects have been i should be identified for completion by outside contractors or in-house resources we've broken things down into mission critical what are things that would that could potentially fail that would cause us to need to close a school we also have uh requisite requests for proposals um issued for the work and then uh document completion of summer and fall of 22 projects and involve the finance and facility committee again to get a deeper understanding of what some of the true facility needs and true facility costs are um we presented this a couple times or had a conversation at our finance and facility committee i think the one thing they really appreciated was this artifact here where um we've broken down the work into mc as you can see they're kind of mission critical work we've broken this work also down into down into uh annual maintenance or annual work and maintenance work and then we've also got additions and improvements and one of the things that the committee really responded to well here was that we're actually adding a funding source so are are a lot of these projects being completed through our operations and maintenance budget fund 20 or are they being completed with a capital improvement dollars and fund 60 or are we using debt service extension bonds to pay for that work and the architects are actually designing this spreadsheet as you'll see on the next slide here it's really hard to read i apologize it's so little but what that is is how much work at one of the schools is being done what is being paid for out of fund 60 what's being paid for out of fund 20 and below this is what's being paid for out of debt service extension so that we have not only a schedule of work but how we're funding that work so that's our first goal our second goal under finance and facilities is to develop a five-year plan to address the physical capacity for our buildings and programs things like the brokaw early learning center transition things of that nature so we are conducting a comprehensive assessment of some of the current district programs we've provided our district demographer rob shorts with uh updated program capacity numbers so he's using using those and he'll be getting us some information about attendance numbers and capacity we're looking at relocating central registration from the mason square facility to uh to the east view facility and then uh we've also engaged kluber architects to develop the envision 308 master facility maintenance schedule and that includes a review of all of our facilities and the old trauber facility as well so we'll be uh we'll be engaged at looking in that do we still have that from when mike barr was here we do yeah that's we've been looking at that presentation it was broken up into like three phases phase one phase two phase three but i'm pretty sure it led into this year uh yeah but but it's changed a few times since he was here the dollar changed quite a bit i'm i'm sure i guess my struggle is that we don't have anybody in-house that could do it to do the work yeah all right we're gonna have a conversation about that yeah so at this time next year what we'd like to do is identify and incorporate district facility needs into the capital project timeline taking a look at kind of the district spaces that we have east view academy old trauber things of that nature and really building an appropriate dollar amount to take care of some of our capital needs in the operations and uh operation and maintenance budget so what we've done uh what we'd like to do is uh to continue meet with appropriate program directors to discuss what their current enrollment and program needs are report on program enrollment projections for those programs and what their facility needs are and what those projected numbers would ask them to need and then review those program needs based on the existing facility plan that we have right now and that doesn't click anymore so that's my last slide any questions or ideas about what we presented to you tonight eugene one quick question so it in the what uh guber is providing with the finance master schedule does that is that is will that be an additional cost or is that what was included in the initial bid that's in the engagement that we brought them on for um to what eugene's speaking of what i think i remember you referring to was also my question which was they had reference to continued need for more services in order to maintain this are you looking to engage them for further services in this activity say that one more time sorry are you are you looking to engage them for further services in the creation of a facility maintenance plan um at this point we're working through what we've engaged them on the on the 10-year plan and encompassing some of the it will include some of the uh old trauma plans and reviewing the work because they were involved they were involved in the work in identifying the three phases the current engagement includes old trafford work yep the current engagement will include a review of that cool um so my second question was one thing that had come up you had mentioned that you have a strategic planning committee made up of several central office maintenance personnel i remember i had asked you at that point why we weren't including anyone at the at the buildings um because very often a principal's request for a need may be very different than what a central maintenance person might have yeah so can you speak to why you're not including them in that process yeah where we are we're kind of at the uh the beginning phases where right now we're putting the list together and we're we're giving them feedback on here's what we heard you say you needed and we're giving them that back and we're using our central office staff to make sure that those are the some of the same challenges that they're experiencing a lot of what the buildings are bringing up are additions or improvements to equipment not the maintenance of the existing equipment so once we get that once we get that kind of compartmentalized we will start involving more of the building staff but we do have one representative on the central office team who is wearing the hat of a building engineer or principal in your facilities so we've got a grounds steve weaver and grounds we've got frank for preventative maintenance we've got uh we've got six six different people and andre is one gentleman who's representing the buildings so how did you gain feedback from the principals to add to this list because they generally have a giant list that they haven't given to maintenance yet yeah yeah you know what we we met individually with all buildings and we had individual discussions we had the building uh building floor plans out and we were looking at parking lots outside spaces inside spaces and uh documenting everything and anything that we could look at thank you yeah sorry one last statement and i'm sorry for beating a dead horse but i know that as you're doing your projections and the prioritizations the dollar amount that's needed will it will exceed the amount of money when you're when you're allocating your funding sources will you also include in your planning and in your reporting uh what we will do once the mix i think you said five years on this one and i remember earlier presentation it was an additional two million that's allocated toward a budget but how how will we one pay for it or two forecasts for it and i'm not asking the question generally right now but i just want to be clear that i understand that what you are planning will cost more than what we have so how do we plan for that correct and that's kind of because when you think about it we're kind of stuck between two worlds we're stuck between the deferred maintenance and actually get on a healthy schedule so the first part is what does a schedule look like and then based on the funds we have available and the time that we have how do we want to coordinate this work for instance we have 20 buildings the life span on a roof is 20 years so the question is why aren't we just replacing one roof a year why do we wait and replace six roofs in one year so can we spread that out and get a healthier more predictable financial schedule and that's what we're really excited about putting together for the board and you'll have a total dollar amount on this plan this was kind of a middle of the project update if i remember correctly i think the thing that most impressed me dr petsky and i think that it was really spoken to by most members of the committee at the time and i know we we'd updated on it at the last time we had the finance update because this was from a previous meeting but it was very impressive how we were now beginning to tie our expenses to funding sources this has not happened before um as far as i can tell it's just kind of been i mean we've got to do this but we have no money for it so this is a pretty important piece because that translates it from a strategy into an actual practice which is what we need yeah thank you and a lot of that hard work that rob and his team and they've done a really good job um can i ask the question regarding old trauber i know that it looks like a review of the old trauma facilities included in the cluber architects um development i know we've done this before so is this you know is it is the information that was presented before is it now obsolete and we have to go back and do it again or are we not going to be paying more money for something that we already had done yeah it's going to it's going to involve kind of a an audit we'll start with the presentation of the information we had at the time that that was put together but they were involved in developing a three-phase approach to to making improvements at that facility and we're just going to go back and do another building walk through and take a look at where we are in terms of the the work that was identified then and the work that will be required now but i think too what's changed a little bit is the usage of that building like talking about making it an administrative building as opposed to opening it up to students again so the the use of the building has changed since our last conversation as well uh we we've had several plans over the years on what we could possibly do with the building since there hadn't been any successful sales um i think the last one dr sparlin correct me if i'm wrong was in the spring of 2020.

yes uh when did they start using them they started they were installed uh before the holidays and then we've done for uh professional development uh in january and they actually are in the classrooms now being used by our teachers so we've had a nice i mean it might be short but an opportunity to test them out test them out yes absolutely yeah and uh i just like mr angel's question uh the life lifespan on these mr gill gilland and then what type of features just something simple that maybe we wouldn't understand or anybody that might be listening that um you know like kind of the quote-unquote cool features that we'll be able to you know be used with these uh is there potential you know remote learning opportunities with them or oh yeah with webcams you can do zoom sessions on it one of the big ones is for the students they can cast their chromebook to the panel got it so as mr gill said a student can actually cast their chromebook to the panel and it even ties into the sound piece as well thank you i would just like to say knowing how technology changes to get 10 years out of something and 15 out of something else that's really good for i mean yes it's a substantial amount of money but for 10 and 15 years knowing how things change every one or two years outstanding you have to research and give us the right stuff for our students and teachers i would just add that this is as great of a device for the lower elementary kids as it is for our high school most advanced kids and how so the the stands that they're on it can literally lower it all the way down to where it's resting almost on the floor so our smallest learners can go up and interact with it and then it'll it's just it's amazing the different things it can do so we thought we could do a day-long pd on it for our teachers or just give it to like three third graders for about 10 minutes and let them figure it out yeah and it's amazing to watch how they go through it so it's gonna be great yes um before we vote guys i'm gonna reread this recommendation because i cut it off short but it wouldn't be appropriate to not read the full thing with the dollar amount there so we are voting to approve the purchase of 425 clear touch 86 inch interactive panels document cameras webcams adjustable mount carts and installation from tri electronics at a cost of two million six hundred twenty two thousand dollars nine hundred six two million six hundred twenty two thousand nine hundred forty seven dollars do we met uh motion two i'm sorry we already motioned and approved we're gonna vote all those in favor signify by saying aye aye opposed a motion carry tom you were there an eye on that correct yes okay thank you that motion carried five zero uh 5.4 district access points mr hartman thank you again mr warning we are at a point where we're refreshing our access points throughout the school district to make sure that we have the highest level of wi-fi connectivity and performance for the students and staff therefore again this is connected to winfield we did this for winfield and you approved the uh the access points and they were aruba access points which is a probably a gold standard at this point in time so when the bid went out two of the bids came in that were meraki that's what we had currently replaced uh one came in as aruba and that's the one that we're recommending tonight that you approve a purchase of 757 aruba access points mounts licenses and installation from moss uh for 674 127.97 for the recommendation as mr hartman just prevented presented to approve the purchase of 770 57 aruba access points mouse license installation from moss at 674 cents do we have a motion 127.97 approve this move by mr babjack and second by mr angel any further questions for mr hartman or we'll include mr gilligan if not all those in favor signify by saying aye hi opposed the motion carries 5-0 and 5.5 approval to apply for and receive grant funding from the crompton community foundation for lake street uh sensory path mr thank you mr warning seeking your approval tonight uh to apply for and receive the grant funding from the crown point foundation uh 750 dollars for what's called a sensory path uh this is a path that is uh touches all the senses um smell uh touch let me get all five of them um sight sound you know although i think i left one out right there something to taste maybe that's what maybe it's not so much taste because i couldn't see it uh but this is uh this is a location in the building where the uh the children can go for uh uh for just a break a little bit of focus time get away from uh from the classroom or in some cases where a student might need to be get away from the classroom for a moment as far as to get focused and refocused uh back on the in the classroom and then return so the the foundation has uh provided um has already sent a check for 750 the cost of this is actually at 1 uh we have these in different buildings uh i know mentioned uh in the grant macarthur i think that's where they uh lake street went to look at and and and basically purchased one similar to that so this evening seeking uh the your approval to apply for and receive the grant funding from the foundation an amount of 750 hey dollars hartman we've heard the recommendation to approve the apply for the suit accept the grant funding from the company community foundation do we have a motion to approve moved by mr babjack in second by mr smith have any questions or comments from mr harper if not all those in favor signify by saying aye aye opposed motion carries 5-0 and 5.6 approval to apply for and receive grant funding from the lake county master gardeners association grant for lake street elementary thank you uh teacher caitlin wool uh applied for this grant from the lake county master gardeners association amount of 500 and this is really to do work in the courtyard at lake street to give it a kind of an upgrade with some maintenance and some upkeep that will be done by different student clubs volunteers or local landscapers so they're seeking uh the grant funding of 500 from the lake county masters garden association seeking your approval tonight to apply for and receive those funds thank you mr hartman you've heard the recommendation to prove to to apply for and accept grant funding from the lake county master gardeners association for a grant of 500 do we have a motion to approve moved by mr angel in second by mr babjack any questions or comments just like to make sure we mentioned thank you to the gardeners association the community foundation for helping other children in the community any others all in favor saying by saying aye aye opposed coach kerry is 5-0 and 5.7 mr hardman 2022 cron point city school corporation summer school program yeah thank you again uh this evening i bring to you the 2022 summer school programming uh it's very comparable to what we've approved in the in the past with courses that will take place kindergarten through grade seven or i guess and then students in eighth grade going to the high school we'll be offering a three week program for the elementary students will begin june the 13th and the 30th of uh of june uh they attend 12 days four days a week for that the high school will be starting june the 13th and end july 15th and those are our courses for credit for our students that uh that they take i would point out that uh this year as we submit our programming to the indiana department of education you can receive up to 105 percent of the eligible costs uh in reimbursement from the state based on their budget and what they've appropriated uh two years ago we we did receive 104.45 so it was a good year uh last year when you look at it financially it was not such a good year because we received 60 of the the reimbursement and i believe that that that that indicates that more school corporations were providing summer school and if you recall last year there was the learning gap they wanted to accelerate learning because of covid and moving that forward so many more corporations took money or applied or had summer school we don't know what that means for this year normally we get 80 to 85 reimbursement so 104 is really good 60 is really bad um so we're hoping to recover that but we are in a position with esser with which is the federal government grant uh to offset costs uh this year so that we can protect the education fund that we have so seeking your approval of the 2022 crown point community school corporation summer school program thank you mr hartman for the recommendation to approve the 2022 cronkite city school corporation summer school program i have a motion to approve so move by mr angel on second by mr babjack any questions or comments how soon do we get a response from the state on what they approved jim uh usually it's about november okay we submit the final reports in september and then we'll get a we'll get information in november you know not all those in favor signify by saying hi a post uh motion carries 5-0 and we have information items start with 6.1 we have superintendents discussion groups normally would lead off with mr mr smith who keeps in touch with cedar lake yes thank you david um cedar lake has been just still tabling things from the winter and throughout talking about tiff districts and facade grants i think things will heat up they start coming around springtime and matters pick up so there's really nothing specific to report to our school corporation at this point thank you enough usually about mr hoffman uh maybe anything from the the city or winfield or administer angels to that discussion okay um i'd say a quick opportunity to um tell dr terrell thank you for continuing to grow a relationship with the city as uh um as we've heard over the last year a few months um our relationship i'm just meaning willingness to work together talk together figure out what we could do as school district and city to help one another seems like there's some progress being made from the past so thank you i might also let you guys know i will be speaking at the cedar lake chamber of commerce luncheon on the 8th 11 30.

um and there was no money for that um that was just the long and short of it we're in the middle of a pandemic we were able to um begin using part of the space that was in workable condition for the food pantry and i believe a few other larger in services so we should i mean this shouldn't really be that out of date with the exception of some of the materials costs um but i i don't i i mean i haven't seen you present that yet but my understanding is it wouldn't be very different from what you'd presented then is that true it is pretty true yes you have you have mechanical systems and things of that nature over the last few years that are having difficulties so there are some added there are some which we kind of predicted before which is why it wasn't really a usable space except for that one little part all right is it still more expensive to tear it down than to rehab it it was for quite a long time more expensive to get rid of it we'll have that answer for you in the presentation thank you okay okay we're on 9.0 consent agenda are there any questions on the consent can i have a motion to approve the consent agenda please i make a motion to approve all items under consent including 9.1 minutes from the board of education meeting on february 10th 2022 open and closed session and 9.2 to acknowledge the foia request received by the district second mrs simultan hi mr catwood mrs swanson aye mr cyrone aye mrs torrell aye mrs johnson aye motion passes 6-0 item 10.1 is an information on financial statements are there any questions on what's been provided to the board item 10.2 is information and boilers and chillers dr petsky all right so bring it up to the table we've got rob allison and don ware from architects all right um so we've recently went out to bid on the oe boilers and oh chillers and uh i've charged uh rob to bring in some pictures of the equipment that we're actually looking at bringing in so we can kind of get an idea of what we're doing so i'll pass the clicker over to rob and as you're as you're about to start can you also give us a difference between a boiler and a chili i mean a chiller and a cooling tower so as dr petsky pointed out we'll be talking about the sorego boiler and chiller project report some project details uh consists of base bid replacement of the two main absorption chillers at oswego east with two electric concent electrical centrifugal chillers alternate one comprises of the refurbishment of the oehs cooling tower and to mr gatewood's point uh the chillers are are the pieces of equipment that generate the the cooling the tower is what's responsible for taking the heat that's absorbed if you will by the chiller water out of the system and it just recycles alternate two comprises of the replacement of the two gas boilers at ohs with two high efficiency boilers a little detail on the chiller base bid during the 2021 cooling season we discovered the chillers are not operating properly uh 21 assessment of those chillers was completed by a service contractor repair cost was provided of about 147 655 dollars so the age of the chiller combined with the cost uh to refurbish the chiller to keep it functional uh is why i'm recommending that we replace those chillers average life cycle 15 to 20 years and we are 17 years the cooling tower alternate two 17 years old in need of refurbishing the fill is deteriorating to a point the tower is no longer working efficiently there'll be some images down the road that'll show you what that looks like average life cycle 15 to 20 years however we can extend that probably anywhere from five to seven years with this refurbishment the boiler alternates number three boilers at ohs are 20 years old they have reduced efficiencies we're experiencing an increase in maintenance needs parts are becoming more and more difficult to procure as technology advances these older boilers rely on some older technology it's more difficult to keep them maintained and to find the person funding sources this project's intended to be funded via decept funds the chiller portion of this project is eligible for comed incentive rebate we estimate that we'll get 234 thousand dollars back on that project and we're waiting to hear back from nicor on what we might be able to get back on the boiler replacement uh just an image of the chillers installed in 2005 back it up this is what they call the fill in the tower you can see it's it's in rough shape that's just one example of what's going on with that time and this is uh just an image of the boilers at ohs uh this is just a boiler chiller replacement schedule so the board's aware that we we do have a plan going forward getting our equipment into a schedule part of that envision 308 concept lakewood creek shooting for 2024 fox chase 2026 bernard sick 2027 homestead 27 thompson 28 and boulder hill 29.

so just as a heads up they wanted to get some more information about all the exciting projects that are going on in our district so especially with macarthur and the major remodel we're getting ready to do out there in addition so where's that average dr joe that is going to be at help me out oh all right um moving down the list 6.2 director of elementary education mr ramirez thank you mr president and school board members i just wanted to take this opportunity to kind of bookend the start of the meeting tonight where we're able to see the great accomplishments the talents and the citizenship that our dem our students demonstrate at the high school level and wanted to kind of i guess share some accolades from our elementary because it really i think is the starting point for our students and their growth of being strong community members contributing not only to their school but to the larger community as a whole and really to starting to develop their talents with diverse offerings that we have so if you will grant me i'll go as quickly as i can i think as you see on social media on the websites as well for each school they have such great accomplishments talented students and dedicated sponsors and leaders who create great opportunities for our students so i'll start with winfield and i think it's awesome to see that earlier this month um the second grade robocats placed fifth out of 48 teams and that was out of 48 teams that included middle school students as well so our second grade team is already really demonstrating some strengths in the area of robotics they also are very philanthropic at winfield and have raised almost ten thousand dollars for the american heart association through the kids heart challenge likewise robotics is a great strong suit of macarthur and they will be competing at the state competition for robotics coming up in the middle of march and macarthur also inducted their first national elementary honor society group of students this year and that group of students raised 1500 for st jude here in crown point earlier this year as part of their service project at lake street we also have another robotics team that is going to state competition this year and their na nehs is currently fundraising for leukemia and lymphoma and they are in full swing this continues to really be a heart of philanthropy at lake street and really is a reflection of their school's culture at ike they have really dedicated over the past nine years a lot of time and effort into fundraising for st baldrick's and i was astonished by this number i had to do a double check on this one so this is their ninth year of being the eisenhower bald eagles or st baldrick's and they have raised collectively 204 thousand dollars over nine years for st baldrick so i just think it is again um just an ongoing passion and a true you know uh legacy to the school and to the community tball currently has their student council actively involved in raising money and donation of items to the nick foundation which is the northwest indiana cancer kids organization foundation as well as then have also been working with the lake county animal shelter so i think it's really great to get to see the scope of the philanthropy that happens throughout our buildings lastly for t-ball they started their first one school one book program this year in which all of the students the staff this included bus drivers crossing guards were given a book and they read this as a school community and really fostered the idea of school home connection engaging activities and really developed a positive culture in the in the building to promote uh literacy and a passion for reading and let me move on to solon they had some really great celebrations um as of recently with our kindergartner and first graders celebrating the 100th day of school and i'm sure on social media you were able to see some of those pictures what i thought was also really fascinating um last tuesday which was february 22nd 2022 so two two two two two maybe i threw in one more too many twos they had their first graders create time capsules that they will open as seniors on march 3rd 2033.

any questions he go back one slide so i remember the boulder hill fiasco of summertime yes yes so was that strictly just a part on a newer unit that we were not able to get or can we re-order that list it was the controllers that run the chiller motors that were just solid state and difficult to manufacture parts weren't readily available so it took a crazy amount of time okay does the board have any questions for mr ellison are you going to go into the bid letter now is it just based on this presentation yeah i'll walk you through that one here so you know if there's no other questions there are other questions yeah i do um if we were to do the repair on the chillers you know what kind of life could we get out of that now repair is pretty extensive we have to replace the chiller bundle and a chiller bundle if you imagine just a bundle full of straws i made a copper that you're wearing out that's the lion's share of that project there's no way for me to predict really how much time we can get out of those chillers at their given age we might get three to five years out of them there may be ancillary parts of that chiller that fail between now and then uh this isn't going to be a comprehensive rebuild um but you could potentially squeeze two or three more years maybe five years i can't predict that i appreciate the second point that something else might go wrong um yeah yeah and um i think it was 147 000 or something like that yeah 147 so if we were to replace it you're looking at about if you get 20 years without any required work it'd be about 70 dollars a year so i'm trying to think of um what's smart replacement versus yeah yeah and the cost to replace the chiller was 1 million 437 000 yeah so you know if something goes wrong in 17 years so even if you go 1.4 divided by 17 whatever that number is it's obviously less than 70 000.

so that will be three three three three so they have some a very good foresight to think about when the kids will be seniors and it'll be interesting to see what those time capsules contain lastly jerry ross is hitting the ground running pun intended they have their girls on the run spring season kicking off tomorrow and they also are wrapping up their national elementary honor society spread the love which is school supply drive for st jude so just wanted to share with you the great work that is starting at such a young age and that i have no doubt will continue until they graduate from us and then we'll continue as citizens hopefully of crown point thank you for the updates mr mears and director of secondary education mr g fermi thank you mr president board members uh let's talk about what happens when they kind of keep moving up here so yes our athletic teams had a great great run here in early february but let me talk about the what happened that same week that our girls were winning that regional championship and the boys were dominating at the semi state level it started on thursday february 10th mr dan white our auto teacher took a team of students to compete in the universal technical institute top tech challenge four states were represented 22 teams and crown point came in first place the team of will hodge and tyler anderson both individuals won a ten thousand dollar scholarship both got tool boxes not one you carry on the side but when you put in the garage for uh you know your your vehicle type of things and hand tools for the high school so mr white has been taking the kids for their uh to that competition for a while now and it's great to see us take first place so then let's move to saturday february 12th if you travel to crown point high school on saturday february 12th let me tell you what you might have encountered first you could have started anywhere across the building where isma competition was going on where our band students brought home 135 medals and qualified for 26 out of 27 events for the state isma competition could move down the hallway to the world language department and seeing our latin team competing we had four teams competing against uh 19 teams from eight schools we took two first places a second place and a fourth place latin team always performing well then you could went to the auditorium where our speech and debate was hosting a regional competition with 10 high schools across northern indiana we fared very well in that we are really starting to pick up momentum in our speech and debate competition team and we're really happy about the progress they're making then if you didn't have enough you could have went to the field house took in a vex robotics qualifying competition where we had three teams qualify for state now if you couldn't get a parking spot at the high school you could have went to colonel wheeler where they too were having a middle school vex competition where both middle schools had teams qualify uh state for the state competition so as we were performing very well in the athletic realm we are also doing an awful lot here and it's great that we hosted most of that right here at our high school all at one time we had all those schools from all across the state and uh our kids of course it's a great day to be a bulldog as they like to say and they're they're doing well and we're very proud of them and we appreciate all the time our teachers and coaches and administrators put in to host those events and make those opportunities for our kids and our kids always come through because they're great thanks thank you mr g for me uh director of exceptional education ms passas good evening president warner members of the board we are already in full gear planning for next year so one of the steps we're taking before the end of march is that each of our special programs will meet with like fifth grade we'll meet with sixth grade teachers for our special programming it's both sets of administrators both sets of teachers and our coordinators facilitate some conversation on those students strengths and how to best set them up for success next year as they transfer to a new building and a new staff we have a couple of exciting events planned for the coming months for the first time ever on wednesday april 27th we will host a transition fair at crown point high school in the evening and that is i think we're up to 37 booths right now it includes adult agencies um banks trades just to all of our students once they hit 14 and older we have to start planning for their transition post school so this will be for their families for the students just showing them what options are out there and then the return of our special olympics game day it's called young champions game day and it will be wednesday may 25th at the high school so i'll share more information with you we would love to have you come out that day and see all of our athletes thank you mrs pascus chief academic officer mr hartman on march 2nd if you're not doing anything we have an exciting event going on at crown point high school you can walk the halls and see approximately 700 students taking the s.a.t they will be there for about three hours and you may enjoy that this is the first time that all students from will be taking the s.a.t it is uh uh it is the new state required test uh so you if you are available and want to walk the halls just don't go into a classroom because we don't i can't even stay stay serious on [Laughter] no i think that would be very good if you guys wanted to tailgate out in the parking lot before the event please do they'll be testing about 7 30 in the morning so uh maybe it's uh maybe it's a breakfast yeah there you go there you go no seriously they will be testing for the first time uh the new state required s.a.t uh test uh and then uh another thing that's taken place that i think it's uh exciting is about our we have about 112 staff members that are taking together a six-week course on multiple tiers of supports for our students to build our capacity and to understand how to support students whether it's behavioral or academic uh to achieve their their highest potential so they're going through a basically a 35 to 40 hour course with a professor out of the university of washington right now it's going for six weeks and that adds time i mean that's five hours four to five hours a week of time preparing they meet uh via zoom on thursdays and it's they're growing their capacity to lead their buildings with these tiers of support within the school which is an exciting thing when we have principals teachers support staff working together for the good of our children so thank you very much i could have kept it going started laughing and uh chief human resource officer mr akiwa thank you mr president board members jim you know you just want to pop popcorn and watch that s.a.t i mean come on you know you like it um a few updates from our area one in particular that's exciting is staffing for the hr department jean lang who was with us for many years as an employee here was our data specialist had moved with her family and uh has now moved back and we're lucky to capture her uh to join us in the hr department as an hr secretary so we welcome gene lane back to our uh our fold here in crown point it's really been a wonderful addition and she's now settling in and you know when she settles into my position or in our office in uh hr it's also helping then the transitions that are going on in the business department there were some new uh new members as well so it's nice to see that our central office staff has picked up a talented individual and uh we're really growing as a wonderful team here at central office uh today also marks the end of nominations for teacher of the year so i know our community and and families have been nominating folks so we're going to move into stage two of that effort to then have our buildings elect their representative to be considered for teacher of the year so we'll keep you posted as that effort moves forward but we want to thank everybody for their nominations that they may have given on behalf of our great great teachers here and employees here in crown point community school corporation finally a fun activity for me in the month of february we had planned a breakfast for our new teachers to get back together uh in one big room and have sort of a first semester reflection but as you know when we returned from winter break we were already experiencing an uptick in in covid positives at the time so we just decided it probably wouldn't be a good idea to put all those folks in one room um but i've been going out to the buildings now meeting with our two or all of our new teachers on their actual school sites for a couple of reasons number one is just to check on them to make sure they're doing okay and it's really nice to hear all the positive comments they have to share so i have to give kudos out to all of our buildings and our leaders and our staff members that made these people feel team welcomed supported they all feel like they have advocates out there right now halfway three quarters of the way through the their first lap here in crown point in all of our buildings they're also providing us great feedback to continue to improve our new teacher academy which is when we bring our folks in we have some scheduled activities before the school year starts so they're providing useful information to continue to improve and make that program as strong as possible so i've just had a great time out there i've got a couple more buildings to go but thank you all of our staff members for making our new teachers feel welcomed and loved here in the crown point community school corporation so that's all for tonight for human resource thank you thank you mr akiwa director of communications ms allen thank you good evening keep an eye on your newsletters website social media that we push out in the next couple of weeks we'll be releasing our new video series called super things hosted by superintendent dr terrell this is a video series where we go school to school and highlight something great that's happening in each building so up to this point he has played the ukulele with some of our fifth graders visited project leads away at the high school went to timothy ball for their one school one book program and next week we'll be at macarthur so these will roll out one every couple of weeks starting in a couple of weeks also on friday we will launch a school spirit wear store online 24 7 available spirit wear for crown point community on friday what was the phrase again of dr terrell's super things super things and crown points just made me think of the movie super troopers i actually think i may have found my retirement gig though playing the ukulele oh bro okay mr key was very talented in the music you know if anybody needs interest maybe we could do that those that don't know oh dr chill holds his own huh oh all right i don't know okay no there may have been some music okay interesting thank you miss allen moved to superintendent of schools dr terrell so just a few things this evening as you know the our general assembly has been in session for the last six weeks or so causing havoc and trying to do the best they can for hoosiers across our state excited to announce today that house bill 1134 which is the probably one of the most impactful bills for schools in a negative way possible in the last many years is dead as i was informed tonight by denise jansen our president of our union teacher association and i have regular contact with our representatives through text through phone calls different measures but earlier this year and i want to give credit to mrs jansen who is here with us this evening she emailed me probably two three weeks ago and one of the things that we had talked about when i first got here was that i would support the union as they were going down to the legislators and and different things as they came and she came to me and said you know we really feel like this bill is one of the ones that is really concerning to us uh as a corporation and across the state with our educators and she said would you consider allowing us supporting us to go down to the state with some representatives here from crown point schools to go to the state house and spend the day and so we talked a little bit more and worked through that and we were able to provide some release time for our teachers to go down so they didn't have to take personal days or vacation days and they went down and spent three different days with three different groups of people so to go down and actually interact with legislators in the state house and that takes a lot of courage if you've never done that before to go down there one you walk into this unbelievably beautiful building very stately but then to be able to talk with them and they know what they've been talking about and they've got their jargon but to just be able to represent our concerns as teachers here thank you for your leadership in that denise and thank you to our teachers i know i've received a couple of notes from them about the opportunity to go and i'm kind of the other way i'm thanking them for being willing to go so it's one thing when i say it but or if you guys say it it's a whole different thing when they hear it from our teachers and see them with teachers from across the state doing it so thank you to that and a good result for that bill um keep our fingers crossed on the others that are still out there that are kind of impactful for us so um i want to recognize tonight's performance of our students you heard you saw the kids here you heard from mr g and fermi or mr mrs ramirez there's unbelievable things going on the things that mrs pasquez is talking about coming up with our that doesn't happen without great teachers and without great administrators and leaders in our district and while that's the fruits of what we see and represent our great school corporation i just want to take time to thank our teachers and administrators for all their efforts you know all those i don't know how many thousands of kids were at the high school and the middle school on that saturday but that was a saturday that most of those people were there volunteering their time to help our kids have great experiences not just our kids but kids from around the state and around multiple states as well so thank you to them construction program progress continues to take place if you haven't been out by taft you're going to need a truck to get out there at this point in time because of how the roads are and getting back and forth but they've got steel structures up starting to put the roofing on the auxiliary gym walls are going up so it's really moving along fast we expect at the high school they'll be breaking ground here in the next week or so we've worked through that permit process with the state working with the city and a great relationship and things going on there so we have some really good things going on just appreciate the way that in spite of noise in spite of distractions that are going on around us we just continue to push forward and our our kids our teachers do amazing things so really appreciate all their efforts thank you dro uh i'm seven this evening got the other business of border school trustees there anything anybody would like to talk about take an opportunity to roundtable discussion anything any any questions i just thought since dion is here dean how are we with supplies in that for all these projects being that there are issues throughout the country with getting things that we need so could you just maybe an overall of are we as as good as we can expect here's what i'll say certain pieces of equipment like mechanical equipment and roofing we're just calling logicals on the schedule so we're making adjustments based on what we know no use people getting chiller 12 weeks 32 i will say that now this wednesday the open mids for macarthur next wednesday with open business we have premium meetings giving the contractors an opportunity to come into the building and see existing conditions typically we'll get maybe 15 or 20.

so i i'm going to look to you guys to kind of help me uh make that decision and historically we have operated in a in a run to fail situation we run it till it dies and your chiller is not going to fail um when you don't need it it's going to fail when you have kids in school so part of the envision 308 concept is to try to catch that mission critical piece of equipment before we get into that period of potential critical failure so yeah we can get 20 maybe 25 even if we do this extra extra bit of work but your risk goes up exponentially for credit yeah so okay yeah yeah what's the value of that you know it's kind of what yeah okay and it's just something it's it's a conceptual evaluation it is you're assessing the risk how much is that risk worth do we want to we want to risk the potential of a chiller failing and a high school probably probably if you run a chill or boiler to fail i i remember at one point it had been 15 to 18 months to get these parts in for replacement so in the meantime we were renting in units at an exorbitant cost if i remember correctly so the the cost of running to fail isn't necessarily uh overall savings yeah and no it sounds like it um it sounds like the incremental difference isn't worth it well and it really is a judgment call the board is faced with the decision of determining if they want to run the risk pay the lower cost and see how many more years we can get out of it which is a perfectly reasonable decision to make or if they would like to replace them and most of us won't be around hopefully anyway the next time they fail um for me it's a perspective of trying to minimize that risk window so that we don't run into a situation where we're impacting the classroom oh yeah the the dollar difference the dollar difference per year isn't really that great so i just figured i i do have a question though again the base bid was a million coming back again it's still the minimum base bed was 1.4 and change the only benefit i could see to doing a repair is if we thought that this was a blip for this year given supply chain issues um do you anticipate that dropping 400 000 in the next couple years that we would get out of a repair i don't i mean you'd have to be turning around that quickly in terms of the supply chain and parks costs labor costs so clarify that's my question it was the increase what was the cause of the increase on all of them across the board because all three bids went up significantly so is it what was the increase due to the supply chain or you're not sure uh i would say that uh the numbers we're looking at now uh definitely reflect a higher cost of the supply chain um a year ago two years ago if we were to bid this out we wouldn't see numbers this high i don't think but i'm not an industry expert not an economist i just know that everything's costing me more now and vendors i've spoken to have appointed to supply chain issues manufacturing delays etc do we realize any savings by having some of our own staff help install or do we not have anybody who could do that potentially yeah and the question there to ask would be do we have the expertise i mean i mean would an outside company allow that or if they're going to put a warranty on it i have to let legal speak to whether or not that would be kind of a gray area we would have to talk about and then i think it would be impacted because that'd be cool that wasn't in our that we said hey you know the contractor is going to do a b and c and we're going to do d e f in-house although but i just mean that sometimes you have someone in a building or in a district who can do the same job and instead of paying an outside contractor that would be 60 an hour to do something that your 30 an hour guy is doing would make sense to realize some savings if yeah we because there certainly are people who can agree i think we had talked about the the sr funds that had been requested to be allocated were to update building automation systems not necessarily for the boilers and chillers it was the building automation ones i remember talking about um yeah it was something different but no i i don't remember that it was the boilers and chillers that we had been talking about it had been a different system um and upgrading the the automation automation all right so with that presentation thank you gentlemen we did get eight bids and as you saw in the bid list what we're going to uh recommend is that helm mechanical be selected and we did we did decide to go with the base bid and the two alternates for a total of two thousand or two million ninety five thousand dollars so that'll be as uh an action item on the uh next meeting have we used them before john have we used them before hell that's something i'd have to check with rob on have we used helen before i am not personally familiar with helm they did acquire mechanical ink which i am mechanically but i don't know if they're going to use mechanical resources or if they're going to use helm resources they are a local reliable as far as our resources can say in terms of checking background checks etc i don't have any concerns yeah okay and i know some you know a standard practice is when you get bids do you guys throw out the highest and the lowest or do you just always go with the lowest as far as i'm aware we always do they know the company familiar with their work and things like that yeah occasionally i've seen us not go with the lowest although i don't know if it's in the facilities arena for the bids um and in those cases it was because the the company is able to meet the demand um in terms of staffing and things so while they might have bid a lower price it was at uh whether or not they could provide was kind of questionable yeah the key is just the lowest responsible bidder so if you found that another some of the lowest price was not responsible that are then you're going to go with that maybe a slightly higher price thank you and how do we define responsibility yeah responsible i i caught that um how do you define responsible references oh you're asking me that question oh or yeah i didn't know if you that was okay i i was pleased yeah i'll go with the legal definition i it's case by case and my knowledge i don't have yeah i mean it's the key is when you look at your specifications are they actually meeting the specifications because i've seen bids come out for different projects and what their response is is not really what you're asking for the other part is that you're looking also let's say the lowest responsibility is someone that you've had a horrible experience with and you know they can't do the job you don't have to just because they gave you a lower price do that i mean there's it really is a case-by-case scenario so it just depends but you know you're looking at not just price but you're looking at what they're telling you they're going to do and does that match what you need and you're looking also you can use your experience or even just the um reputation and and find out you may see a company that says oh we're going to joe miller construction we know we're not getting a lot of jobs because we're really not that good i'm not a construction guy by the way um and then we come out with the really lowest bids and you know what we stink at that so you know you're gonna that's what you're looking at one of the other things i think that i've seen here is that sometimes it'll be the bid will come in um and it's what we ask for and all those things are fine but it's reliant on whether or not they can hire additional staff um and if we want to take the risk that what if they can't hire staff for what they think so was any of that specific i didn't i don't recall seeing any of that detail in the in the bid letter to give us justification of why helm was the right choice yeah not in the bid letter but other than reviewing it with the architects and when the specs went out on what we're expecting they're aware of the quality of work that we expect so i'm uncomfortable with the eight that bid on the project any other questions on 10.2 all right moving on to 10.3 item as a bus trust lease agreement dr petzke all right um this one is uh two years ago we came to the board and presented a bus renewal for about 64 large buses this time we're coming back for the the second portion of that which is five 77 passenger buses one 30 passenger bus 8 24 plus three passenger buses with a lift and one uh 321 passenger buses so um if there were any questions about the uh about the board memo and the bus lease i'd be happy to answer any are to replace existing vehicles correct there's no additional vehicles being added in this correct these are just to replace current vehicles that we already use do we have enough staff to actually man all of our current vehicles yes our uh our vehicles um our our vehicles um we need these vehicles well absolutely and we probably need the staff members too but if we don't have drivers or buses this year i'd wonder if we needed them this year if they can't get driven anyway we do that was part of the challenges we have the drivers we were given routes back from our uh we were given routes back from our professional services which is what led to some of the shortages so our drivers are driving and so we will are you saying that we can reduce the amount of contracted services we can go out for because of this also no this is the same number what we're doing is we've consolidated routes so we are over booking routes what we'd like to do is redistribute to what our normal routes were rather than doubling up or increasing the number of kids on routes right but i guess in terms of the number excuse me the number of vehicles does that change the number from what we currently have so are we replacing we're getting rid of 17 vehicles and adding 17 vehicles so regardless of what's going on with the routes we have people to drive the buses they won't sit in the parking lot well then the thing is to yeah no they won't that's the buses well for the good of the order can you tell people what happens when you get rid of a bus when we get rid of a bus well they're actually we're on a five-year lease so we lease brand new buses we use them for five years we trade them in then we get the equity for those buses and we roll them into the next lease so we have another we don't have to deal with the high maintenance costs of keeping buses that are 10 years old and breaking down we roll those into new buses so are there any alternative fuel choice i know that the company does make alternative fuel choice buses but i noticed that we didn't have any is there a reason why or is it just too soon yeah right now what we're doing is trying to convert ours to a gas fleet we've got some diesel buses and we're trying to convert to just regular gas it would require us to kind of retool retool the shop and things like that if we were to take some of those on but it's definitely something that we can explore so i mean that is a good point is that something that we can explore i mean yeah that does have a savings associated with it especially given rising gas prices i think and like the environment the choices that they use i think that they have available right now i don't know if they have electric yet but i think they use propane uh to control their buses but it's just something that i read and i was wondering if if we explore yeah yeah can we take a look at that as part of our environmental awareness and impact i'll make a note of that and bring that bring that up with our transportation department and see what options we've got and the other thing i saw from cost savings was depreciation we get that by taking on this new contract lease agreement correct yeah and that's one of the reasons why we lease them for five years because what we do is we lease the buses and then we're able to claim all five years of depreciation if we were to own the buses for longer we would no longer be able to depreciate those resources so okay and that that kind of goes in with our like it's kind of a balance between our district reimbursement what we get reimbursed for and uh what we pay what we get reimbursed for from the state what's that i was just i was wondering what the benefit of that was because we're not a tax entity so um but thank you for um yeah because the reimbursement yep so we got we get about an 80 reimbursement um rate with our transportation is how that works so the state is most of our buses it's 80 reimbursement rate on miles leases salaries and just to verify that's based on the number of students that could ride the bus so when you see a bus with two or three kids just while i'm thinking of it it doesn't mean that we're taking a loss we're we're providing a bus and being reimbursed for the potential riders not the people who actually get on the bus each day we're being reimbursed for actual miles driven and actual salaries paid whether the kids ride or not if we're driving if we're uh if we're driving that bus then it's reimbursement based on the number of miles but nothing irritates me more than seeing three buses go by my house in the morning and not being able to ride any of them yeah we do that getting reimbursed for 67 kids and three are riding it you know what how many families are less than 1.5 miles and see several buses drive past their houses there's more than a few all right thank you i got nothing item 10.4 is information and a pool rental agreement dr pesky all right um and this is uh uh the pool rental agreement the last time the board saw this was december 6th and we we changed that one of the one of the things that the board wanted to see was taking the athletic director out and i just wrote myself in is kind of coordinating it so this is uh this is a contract we we put this together and after our last conversation with the board we sent it to uh six different swim clubs and we solicited feedback or negotiations conversations with them and uh we've had several conversations with different swim clubs and uh kind of the consensus was the coaching staff that was there um basically i was told it's a very small world they all know each other and uh they were they other clubs thought that the consistency for the families and the students with the coach owned club of the coaches who are currently in the delta program they would like to see that uh continue and so we negotiated pretty heavily with delta aquatics so what's happening is they're calling it delta aquatics but it's not the school owned club it's a coach they've established themselves as a business and entity with an attorney an accountant and all that the district is doing is facilitating the the rental agreement what this contract represents though is it is a multi-year agreement because as you can imagine the swimming pool is water real estate is very far and few between so this gives delta aquatics the new delta aquatics some peace of mind that they have our facilities for the thousand plus hours that they're uh it literally is a thousand plus hours that they are in practices and competitions and whatnot so uh um that's what this this agreement does is just kind of uh solidify that partnership you you can use our pool facility we will rent it to you and uh at the rates and the competition rates that are included so any questions about the pool rental agreement so just let's just start at the top where you said that you would be the coordinator now no just really it's uh what that means is a communication like if if there's a question about this contract what it means what it says if there's facility uh like this a delta would be using our facility rental software um to reserve the facilities and if there's any question they would just come to me and uh and i would then connect them with rob or if there's a question about the facility i could check on that and clarify for that well that's my question i suppose not that and i was just checking to see if he was still here but not that i want to give rob moore to do um but if you're going to send him to him but no keep going this we're going down the same are we going down the same road okay um my question is why add an extra layer of having them go through you for you to send them to rob unless it's just more than um his workload can handle in which case i wouldn't want to send them to help then i think yeah it is without the other runs yeah with all the other rental agreements and he's really dealing with you know people who rent it a week a time or two weeks at a time or they're doing intermittent renting this is like a multi-year contract and this also could involve like the upkeep of the pool so it could be if there's if there's pumps that need replacing if there's other things or other work that needs to be done i would obviously be working hand in hand with rob on this but uh it would just serve as another another conduit to this contract so specific to the swim team and so what is the legal entity that is rent okay but are they are they um are they how are they established are they a non-profit right what are they yeah they are uh you know what i'll have to look and see exactly how they establish themselves i i don't think you know i'll i'll get back to the board on that one but we they are a member they are an entity they are registered with u.s swimming and they are covered for insurance purposes through the u.s swimming association and uh we are on their insurance as a covered entity as well so we've got the certificate of insurance are they currently listed under usa swimming is not a legal entity yet they're not a yeah yet so how are they how do we have a certificate uh they they are they they've established themselves they're ready as soon as we sign the contract they're ready to uh to run as delta aquatic swimming and yeah this it's for information today for the board so we'll uh we'll fill that in and put that on there get signatures and whatnot so one of the things in previous contracts for example with the senior center which is one of the last longer term leases i think we've had for a rental in recent years i know we had that a few 20 25 year leases but aside from those um one of the things that we'd put into that to protect ourselves as you mentioned if a pool fails that's a pretty hefty expense all of a sudden which we might not have in our budget so i would like to see something about what will happen if something makes the pool uninhabitable do they still pay the rental fee do they not how does that work it is listed well that would be something that we that would be something that we would engage in because if it's not usable it wouldn't be usable if we were running the swim club too so there would be uh we're not going to be running the swim club i think that part was clear but i'd i'd like to make sure that the language in there protects our interests also as a district and that we've reviewed it um yeah actually maureen i've sent this to maureen and so she's looked at it about three times and she's added some some verbage and some indemnification and things like that so but not on it's not the words aren't in this one is that correct like she's added it to this document in regards to if it's if it's not if the pool is not usable it does say that they they wouldn't have to pay us until such time that we repair the cost and if it goes beyond 30 days i don't know exactly which page is on but it is it is listed okay um so i just wanted one more thing um that we currently have a staff of of coaches running delta so when we're at the time that the that they're ready to sign the lease delta aquatics our ownership no longer exists right correct so what is the savings that we're going to get from the staff that we're no longer paying well the the savings it's it's kind of a neutral because what it is it's the revenue we brought in we use that revenue for the expenditure now we won't have the revenue for that expenditure so it's kind of a it's kind of a neutral uh kind of a wash so was anyone able to talk with the parents about what this wants i know we as a board thankfully to the parents in that program they chose to reach out um but i know that you've been hesitant in the past to reach out to the parents but since we'd asked have you spoken with the parents and that's what their preference would be as well um i myself have not any parent meetings i think because this has been being handled at the board level as far as what what we're doing with the contract once this is once this is done i do know that some the coaches have been talking and been fielding uh emails and questions from the parents and i myself have gotten no direct questions or or comments about the swim program so okay go ahead couple i'm sorry i'm good couple statements under the facility usage under item 4b um it says what what does well my question is what does it mean that the sd 308 will maintain delta's multi team unit and the reason why i'm out three on four b or four b as in boys gotcha and the only reason why i say that is that you know i think that if it's going to be a new agreement and this is kind of our first time ever establishing my recommendation would be to reword that sentence so that it's general so that there's no assumptions of the past relationship and so i would say just no and what that what that means that's not the past relationship that's maintained delta's multi-swim team meet event so they're going to say what meats they want to participate in and what we're saying is we are not going to boost you out and take over that meat and let somebody else rent the pool if you give us your schedule when do you want to run your meets and we're not going to rent the pool to anyone else in that time see the other thing that this contract allows us to do is when delta is not using the pool we could rent it out to other people so we could have additional revenue so we're going to respect the swim meets that they tell us they're going to run and we're not we're going to we're going to maintain that you can run that matter of fact we're going to get revenue from the meats they run and we won't uh we won't rent the pool out so the because of that interpretation i now understand it but i would say reword it so that it fits that because contextually we get that because we have a previous relationship so if none of us were here we wouldn't understand that so that's the only reason why i'm i'm saying reword that so maybe change that we'll maintain delta's swim meet too we will uh we will honor something something like that other than maintain i'm sorry the last thing is under well second and last thing under hold the hold harmless section um exhibit exhibit b and c were not attached correct uh those are those are the facility rental release that's a part of our normal facility rental procedure so when we sign the contract and they sign up to lease the facility then we'll attach that facility rental indemnity to that and then c was the same thing the waiver of liability form that's through the the normal rental facility rental process so the only reason why i'm asking is because it's saying that we will require delta to confirm um that they have received those things from their participants and that's how we remove that the um that's how we indemnify ourselves so my recommendation would be to require delta to confirm receipt from their participants of those two things like the medical record and the waiver of liability and their indemnication and demonic dimnification form i'm not asking for them to give us or show us those forms but again if they're going to hold us harmless but if they didn't do their due diligence it just increases our liability right there so i'm just saying that we should confirm they should confirm with us that they've actually distributed exact parents and that we've received them for each participant well i hope we would be doing that for all of our rentals that we require these for if we're not i'm a little concerned yeah so i'm wondering if we should review more of agree agreed have reached out and do support this partnership so i would like to make this happen if we can if we can fix all of the liability potential issues my question kind of goes back to latonya's which is what happens on the day of if something goes wrong who is that contact you on the day of like a day of a meet or something and so who is managing that injured yeah um that's where through our rental facility rental agreement we'll have contacts made there so the way the way that we respond to current um current uh issues but i would imagine that you know jessica and i have a pretty good relationship too so i'm sure if something happens that definitely i'll get a text rob will get information and the person that we've assigned or now the staff member that's assigned to oversee that would be in communication what i'm concerned about is that before these were all staff members so if we had a maintenance person on staff to cover like it was a basketball game on a saturday now that this is not our these are not our employees who is handling that that's and that's one of the extra costs in here if you notice it's uh they not only have the annual rental fee and the meet event fees but it's also personnel fees when they rent through the facility rental procedure it's we make sure that there's staff for the programs that are running in the facilities i would just be interested after like a year with delta looking back and seeing your hours and whoever else is ours and how they kind of correlate to what we actually charge them and if it ends up being a good idea yeah so just a thought for down the road for following up on okay good i uh i will uh i'll take that um kind of uh make some of those adjustments and have a conversation with dr sparlin too um about the the next step for this i know in my memo we had talked about an action item um and we can we can take a look on that if we want to wait i know jen you would mention you know is it something we actually want the board to act on it just was occurring to me that really the board doesn't act on a lot of other facility rentals so do we want to wait for that march meeting or how do we want to do that so i'll have that conversation with dr okay all right thank you dr pepsi item 10.5 is a first read on board policies the information presented has gone through the board's policy committee are there any questions that the board has in regards to tonight's first read and the policies that have been presented so just so you guys know this is we didn't really talk about these last meeting so um there were a couple of suggestions and a couple of um changes that came from the committee just so you know because some of it affects some of the other programs so particularly on six colon 60 curriculum content if you guys want to pull that one up um there was some we there was some changes from the equity committee and some that we could accept and some that we did not because they were part of school code um we added a couple of words we had colonialism um changed some things here and there and then as part of the oh one of the big ones was the committee the equity committee um said that we must there is a hold on let me find it it's on a page um well six colon 60 yeah it talks about six columns oh yeah which one is it let me find the right page it was uh hold on i got it it's on page oh my gosh so this something about i should have wrote down what page it was i'm sure ursula's got it hold on a second what was it is it on that page we added the well we added we added we wanted to add latinx most of the changes were on page three on page three all right um yeah so we added latin because we had some other things oh we had an african-american and asian but we hadn't added latino so um we had kind of added that and we edited it in island x and then you guys had made a change about getting rid of american patriots yep and that was part of school code we put that back in um and then part of the committee just as a general side note there were myself included several members on the committee who um wanted teachers to update grades more regularly yeah like weekly i mean you know there's we were encouraged that um teachers are supposed to be doing that but we have several members of the committee who have some teachers who are a few weeks behind in ezra you know is it part of the curriculum concept it was it was i mean i i i would love that but is that part of content part of our problem was we wanted more consistency in grades being entered in the computer how do you feel about a student you're shaking your head like that's happened to you uh i mean yeah and yeah absolutely it is i mean there's a couple where it's like three weeks later and you haven't had any grades in and then wham guess what you're ineligible right so there was several comments and i appreciate our student ambassador yeah so we would just as a committee we weren't sure that we wanted to put it in policy we thought maybe it was a conversation that somebody could maybe have with staff that just kind of said you know a little more regularity would be is it in a contract or something it's i don't think it's i think we decided it wasn't really anywhere it was more policy it was more procedure than policy although we are willing to visit it for policy not that we don't have enough to do i'm just you know what i that's where we we were really strongly considering making it a policy we're adding it to our policy which i am sure could go either way as far as the union is concerned um so that was that one um and then some of that we had some other changes um there was one for colon 60 and i realized these are just for information but um for colon 60 oh did we pull that one i don't see that we tabled that one so four colon 60 we had talked about at committee and that was in regards to the 25 000 limit um where you had to get board approval we wanted to lower it to 20 000 and um we also we agreed yeah lower it lower oh yeah so the committee came up with 20 000 but it sounds like we we might want to talk about that specific thing right we were uh there was you know maybe maybe one of us who was a little concerned about some white buses that had been discarded at some point and we thought maybe that if things were over a certain amount we should talk about them as a board before we just you know ask for forgiveness instead of permission so we tabled that one and we'll come back with that one and then um oh this is a fun one for you guys four colon 175.

both fridays we have the student meetings are approximately 40. so they're hungry right now which means there's going to be a great level of competition and again the schedules are planned the schedules that are currently out there for the contractors bid on include what we're experiencing in the market right now as far as so we're okay the overall message the biggest impact is roofing right now you used to get it like you should get insulation what do you attribute to competition that's a specialty group i mean several contractors that focus on hospital work there haven't been many projects so what you'll see is there'll be contractors within macarthur that may go even more aggressive towards the fall because they're very close to each other plus you'll get the contract for and then wheeler is going to be out today so assuming all those well this wednesday and next wednesday as always appreciate your efforts i have one to one to bring up in case someone else is thinking about but the uh something that we need to acknowledge the ground point of the alumni association and um we've had some side conversations over the years i'm an alumni scott you're alumni um i'm sure the organization is trying to put together a alumni dinner early april and they generally send out raffle tickets every year um i talked to whoever mr lee helps run the program mr key were you familiar with uh a bit so they had some some issue came up recently and i'm bringing it up because they were they were accused of being a fraudulent group trying to raise money with the tag crown point alumni um my phone call with him seeing this in the past knew thought that it there wasn't it was on the up and up and everything was fine and it is um but they've just um i feel like they've run across many obstacles and um i'm not saying this as if i have an opinion of how it could be done differently but i think that now we have somebody like miss allen on our team um you know that not that you know i just think that a we as a board or dr terrell or miss anyone involved whether alumni or not we should try to find some way to help out this organ this group um this alumni association and uh you know so i'm just i'm just bringing it up now so we can hear if anyone has any thoughts or opinions so i've been to the dinner before and contributed for the raffle and i think it was the year mr caravanna was being nominated for one of the awards that they give out right they typically like to honor teacher of hall of fame teacher correct so teacher hall of fame i think it's wonderful and i think it could do nothing but help in using brooke's expertise to with mr lee and i can't think the other individual's name that i've spoken before so but i think it would be a great connection to even expand a little further so i mean i'd like to you know volunteer some effort to you know communicate with you so dr terrell just said hey what yeah and and even uh um when i spoke to mr lee i i told him i i said i'll uh i'll speak to dr terrell about you know trying to get a a lunch or a breakfast and maybe we you know see who you'd recommend inviting see who could you know maybe um they're graduates of probably the 70s so it'd probably be very helpful to just have some diversity on their with in their and their efforts and if we could find some people to help so i want to bring that up brian smith and i've had some conversations about some other possibilities of ways to try and help that organization as well so getting a meeting together with them be greatly appreciated if nothing else just letting them know that we're thinking about them and you know even it might not happen tomorrow or next month or six months from now that hey there's an opportunity to bring you to he i mean i'm not trying to put words in mr lee's mouth but he just sound a bit stressed and i i really um think that he has always tried his best to do you know what he can with it so uh retreat uh it's a great i we we talked at the last board member about reaching out down state or wherever to find somebody to um help us conduct a retreat and dr terrell had the thought that dr lux would be um if he would be willing and if he can it would be great for all of us and i think i've had some conversations with you guys that'd be great that would great he was doing some vacationing mr reese is doing i had a couple vacation main kid event so we want to miss really important for all of us that for mr reese to be there um so dr kelly have some dates so we have some dates in may um fortunately dr lux is spending his best retirement life and good for him but we're looking at may 10th which is a tuesday or may 12th which is a wednesday then the other dates right now we're just trying to look at a two-week window right now the other dates would be the following week the 16th which is a monday the 18th which is a wednesday or the 19th which is a thursday so if you guys can look at those it'd be great if we could nail that down this evening so that way we can get on his schedule when he's out of town and traveling is there anything that jumps off that are not good nights scott are you playing golf on wednesdays thursday but if i need to miss i can do it if everybody else works for a date but obviously then the 10th 16th and 18th would be my first three choices yeah my kids will have my baseball practice every one of those nights no doubt so i'll make it work yeah during the week is good you said that's what's good for you 10th would be good for me the tuesday 10th tom how's the 10th of may look for you i think i'm good good we have uh should be good at home but i gotta check with my wife on something just to confirm it so put out so if you guys how about this we'll plan on the 10th if i don't hear from you by the end of the day tomorrow or if you guys don't let david know and he get with me either way um that's good just get down and then i can get with dr lux and clear his schedule cabinet members that all work for you guys good good that was good that was that was clear with cleared with mr reese already uh we talked about it i'm gonna get back with him he's out of town right now but i'll get back with him too we're looking at from like four or five to nine at night or something like that probably from five to nine is what we were thinking yeah yeah we can still take um dr terrell and i spoke a couple times we didn't really come up with much new but we definitely take thoughts for topics that you want to be considered ahead of time we probably already figured out knocked out two and a half three hours of just oh yeah so easily yeah yeah um oh it's the other point two things i had were that uh scott babjack so put you on the spot that five years ago we had a conversation about how we thought it was important for crown point to have a more robust e-learning opportunity or you know quote-unquote snow day situation or something comes up and i think that obviously kovid threw the gas on that to to move forward but um you know it seems like it seems like we've got there and the last couple from my experience at home were fairly successful certainly agree with those to say that the kids need to be in school and none of us up here and none of the administrators think that we'd prefer to have a remote day than not but i just wanted to bring it up and ask you with me that that we do think it's important and it needs to be um the opportunity should be there for those days when necessary um you know i agree that that was something that yeah i mean when you look when you look back at how far we've come in five years where the complaint used to be well we've got the technology why aren't we using it uh to now you know do we have to be using it on this day so yeah that's not that's not necessarily a bad thing there's always going to be opinions one way or the other as to you know what the call for the day is but at least the technology's there at least we're not in a situation where we're having to add days to the end of the end of the school year now and uh chew away at the already short summer so no it's a good thing we've come a long way yeah not five years i wasn't trying to put you on the spot for any type of opinion but i knew you had the you we thought we've talked and thought about this in the past and it seemed like you know i'll agree with you this you all want our kids in school as much as possible thank you yeah if you don't doubt that spend an e-learning day in the bab jack house and and i could thank mr bab jack for uh wanting me to experience a true e-learning day i did invest i offered to uh allow me to have his uh youngest son i believe okay come and spend the day with me it's not the uh no i can do the math i can do the math it's the attitude that i do and we're kind of rehashing some conversations we've had before and the explanations of how this process takes place and um you know i bring it up a little bit because i i think that the value in you're not going to make a call because of hurting or not hurting people's feelings or you're going to do what you think is best but when you have that support to know i think that if you make that call aggressively with the information that you have so much planning can take place now because of the technology we have when you know it eight o'clock or when you give the give the teacher a heads up at 11 in the morning that do a little extra work today be prepared in case we have a remote learning day tomorrow the advantages are enormous so yeah it's kind of just saying you know think i want to say thank you for the way that you handled those days um whatever anyone the outcome of the days were where you lived the rows were clean or not i think they were handled well and i hope that that's a um a way that we see communication take place in the future yeah i mean it's a you're we're in a definitely a better situation with the ability to call a day the night before and give people a heads up or give send out an email to the teachers and let them know hey we might be calling it tonight so bring your stuff home and be prepared so those are those are all really good things but as we move the bar and we get better at those things then the expectation becomes higher in the community of you know i guess trying to get it right as much as possible and you know i think most people probably just look out their front window on a snow day and see if their road is closed or or you know is it has my road been plowed why aren't we at school but it's obviously not that complicated and a lot of times we make uh calls or you guys make calls based on roads that are you know county roads or what's the likelihood that a major road is going to be um you know snowed over we got we did we did receive some complaints on one day and um where i-65 was actually closed on that day that morning so it's just a you know you ask people to be patient and appreciate the big picture and all the all the work um that goes into it it's not just one neighborhood but it's a it's a you know a massive undertaking to call that and a lot of people are involved so yeah my my last item is just to to have the opportunity with you guys all here to explain to you how i've been handling some of the emails coming through to the board email we were in a wave there for a while that whether everybody everybody received an individual individualized response or when we were we had a wave of communication come through we did ask ms allen and we we worked through some templated responses um the last i'd say four or five weeks the way i've been handling it is that um individuals who may email frequently enter i'll say call passing information versus asking a question i hope by now they understand we're reading and i have not been responding to all those so if somebody would like that to change just get in touch with me off the side and let me know when there's a question that that comes through dr terrell has helped me with some answers before i even read the email so that i could respond with the proper answers so that those have been uh been taken care of um but maybe more important i want you guys to understand when the responses are sent when we're when we when we receive um and it's not because it may be demanding or in bold letters that i don't respond but i'm not you know when when when the when the when the email is coming through with you know capital capital capital and then you know like exclamation exclamation mix and i respect what i'm reading but i'm not responding to those so if anybody reads them and say hey this one needs a response i'm going to take it or whatever just just let me know i'm just getting getting your opinions and make sure that um as the one and kind of the point person for responding on make sure you guys are okay with that and if you disagree let me know now or off on the side or whatever so but in all we are trying to give a response to to all emails so we're still you know not it's not and and i do know that we've certainly read them so yeah i mean people might not everybody's not going to like all the answers but we that's this is another process that we've improved on over the years we went from two years ago not really having access to email and checking emails that often and then lucky for us we got our inboxes set up right before covert so whose [Laughter] what else do we have anybody else have anything to discuss review questions anybody no update with the city on uh project over there at bulldog park yeah so we are working through the mou process right now their attorney came up with the first draft and we passed it on to cheryl and she's been working through that and so as you can imagine there's some logistic things that we're working through there the other part of it is because we're looking at using permit fees and putting them back into the cities i don't say coffers but using their dollars to really go together as a team on making an addition to a building over there we've got to have some final numbers from our end so we're trying to work through some of that still so then we can come up with a total but we hope to be able to bring that to you guys here probably in the next four four to six maybe four to eight weeks to have that ironed out and good to go so again the fact that they were able to send us the first draft and let us then volley back from what i understand has been a huge improvement in that process as well so could you hear this progress thank you anything else um board statements appreciation recognition mr smith yes thank you i just want to take a moment just i'm going to try to go quick um but whoever came up with the concept i know brooks spoke about spirit wearing a spirit story that kind of got glossed over i want to touch on what a great idea so i don't know who gets credit for that but i love that idea and hopefully that works out nice brooke uh second um just want to touch on again we heard a lot about robotics and and stem and things of that nature tonight it seemed like there's a ton of success we knew that was coming so i just want to remind people i think i think i'm going to confirm this i think the expansion at the high school is expanding room so that all this young talent we can keep that going up into the high school so hopefully they'll have enough middle schools as well in middle schools and even into the elementary area so they have space designated yeah which which is extremely exciting i mean it's such an important uh a part of education so uh something that hasn't been touched on i think theater has a yes a musical you know i'm the theater guy so anastasia's coming and i believe that is a disney now or owned by disney which always does well so uh david get your kids ready get the girls ready you know anastasia's coming to town so that starts march 11th excited about that and then lastly i know dr terrell you touched on the gymnastics uh i know they've performed well so i want to congratulate them and of course uh we want to encourage them and hope they do well and wish them the best as as they continue forward so thank you for the performances yes yes nothing for me tonight that's random i'm actually free myself and uh yep i think we covered a lot early in the meeting so almost an hour and a half congratulations uh dr terrell any final remarks before we look for motion to adjourn i would just say to that hour and a half 35 of it was celebrating kids so yeah outstanding that's awesome yeah good deal yep thank you guys all right thank you everybody a motion to adjourn so moved excited moved by mr angel's second by mr fabric i was in favor signify by saying aye aye opposed

um convicted child sex offender screening the the committee suggested that board members also be fingerprinted yeah is that i i didn't know if that was a change in i'd looked for some footnotes on on that it was that was totally suggested by the committee they were surprised that the board wasn't yeah yeah i actually had your building well sure and i actually think i was fingerprinted at one point for volunteering your field trip on a long time he's he's going oh yeah mrs doyle you were fingerprinted i know right so that was good that was just something that came out of committee so yeah um i checked yeah yeah um four i'm sorry five colon um hiring practices so we had changed some of the wording because five colon ten which we had previously approved um we changed some of the wording to match some of our diversity instead of saying minority it was individuals from diverse backgrounds that came from the diversity committee um so we changed a couple of that and here's another fun one the committee inquired about drug testing for teachers and we explained how cost prohibitive it was which will also be a question for the union and that was a change to that one which was fun um i think otherwise there were some small changes like the personnel five colon 125 was on personal technology and social media some of the some of the apps we had on that originally have been so we had changed we first we went down the rabbit hole of tick-tock tumblr twitch the whole nine yards and then we just decided on i think it was ursula so eloquently put it any other emergent social media which kind of covers all of those bases um so those were the big changes to that one and then oh six colon one three five um so there is a spot on here yep there's a spot on here that talks about automatic enrollment yeah test to a certain point and yeah there were um and really myself and several members of the committee who had been down this road with my own super different children and an automatic enrollment into an honors program for a kid who's competing at a national level is a different story than a kid who is automatically enrolled because they're just book smart and that's what they do if that makes sense like i don't want an automatic enrollment so the committee actually changed the verbiage um what do we change it to and we added suggested right so they can suggest to you that your child be automatically enrolled i don't suggest where did you see suggested no no we wanted to add suggestions oh okay so that we took actually do you have more on those because this is the one that i have the most questions on also no but lay down us all right have more writing i mean currently our policy is this right it seems like if your child tests ahead or exceeds expectations and this is part of that gifted education thing we were talking about before um what we do is we don't provide enrichment we provide acceleration which isn't super popular with every parent especially as it involves often you know seventh graders riding high school buses to the high school for geometry kind of things um which isn't it to me that actually kind of looked like it was kind of you know in 660 where it says students must receive developmentally appropriate opportunities i don't know how developmentally appropriate that is so i would like to have a conversation surrounding this practice i don't know if it's based on this policy but it's it's a concern that we're now considering suggesting automatic enrollment again with that automatic piece into something that's not developmentally appropriate given the environment i think we did talk a lot about it yeah i got all kinds i bet you did yeah because i mean it's it's it's a glaring thing that often turns into so we can pull this one and take it back to committee and i mean i don't even know if it's take it to committee or if it speaks to you know our curriculum design and instruction on how we teach that kind of differentiation if what we do is acceleration or if what we do is enrichment enrichment there was a point several several years ago pre-coveted where we talked about instead of busting them over to the high school i remember this doing it remotely which ironically then became coveted and everything and we didn't have the resources then to do those things remotely from their school of origin so that's a good one for teaching and learning yeah do you want to talk about that true as far as committee goes our committee just wanted to take out the automatic we didn't feel like taking away the choice of a parent was the right way to go so we wanted to just add suggested so that parents still had the choice to choose for their kid because i would choose it for one of my kids and i would definitely not choose it for another one of my kids well and i mean we've got you know a certain number of thousands of my parents that also have those choices to make for a variety of children so i mean i feel like we should probably discuss that if that's what we're discussing so i think we said that when we're we're okay automatically enrolled in the next most rigorous level advanced coursework in english and then meets her exceeded state standards and math she'll be automatically enrolled in the next most rigorous level of advanced coursework in mathematics automatically enrolled in the next most rigorous course of advanced science and i mean yeah we just pulled automatic and put suggested and there's a few more spots that could be we missed it i think yeah we'll get our salon on that all right so those are the big big ones we just have to be sure to add the word suggested because it's not suggested it's not listed currently it just says automatic i think we correct automatic is crossed out recommended or suggested something to that effect but minutes it says uh automatic enrollment removed and added a suggested paragraph giving we added a paragraph i suggested oh i see the green yeah okay to get [Music] do you have any more questions on that one yeah oh you want us to fix it in abc yeah the abc is where it's not friend removed the student who meets and exceeds oh yeah it does yeah all right can you can we just check with maureen on those because if we yeah yeah it was it was getting late yeah um and then do you have any more questions on that one nope and then the other big one was seven colon 30 policy committee had a great time um oh which we also pulled back never mind that one yeah so this one this one had to do with in district transfers um and we wanted to add socioeconomic and we didn't know if that was an okay thing to do oh essentially you can't choose which school kids go to based on a bunch of different factors including we didn't know if that was going to fly so i think we sent that one back to committee um because there were lots of descriptors and then oh the suicide awareness 7 colon 290 was our last big change all we wanted to do with this one was add it to each building's website we don't really most parents don't necessarily maybe go to a district site and the district sky site has so much stuff on it that we were just kind of looking for a button that somebody could push on a on a school webpage that said i need help and that was it there's your policy committee report as i have shared with them i want to be transparent um under uh 3 colon 4 0 the superintendent evaluation um there is a product that i learned about at the triple i conference it is now being um sponsored by the illinois association of school boards and something that we have talked about on the board is how to hold ourselves accountable and building priorities and holding ourselves accountable and everything aligning to evaluations and our strategic plan so eventually we are hoping to put a little bit more um unbiased if you will evaluation process in place for the board then through the superintendent and then through the superintendent's cabinet just just just so that we are aligned because we found in reviewing past practices that there was a lot of confusion and questions um so we're just looking to streamline that and bring um some sort of alignment between the board and the superintendent when you say we are talking about the policy committee hold on wait yeah when you say we are you talking about the policy committee because i didn't have any notes from us on that no no not the policy committee i'm saying about the super eval emails right so this is not from policy committee this is it's about the policy about the policy this is not from committee what what policy six uh three colon four zero three colon four zero yep okay okay let me take a look yeah because we didn't have any changes on this at committee i mean yeah the only thing i see in here are changes in the reporting responsibilities yeah we didn't talk about it so you'd like to have a greater conversation surrounding these policies i would like as this a first read just to bring that part of the conversation like to the public that's all in public to the public in public that you found a program at the triple i conference that you'd like to see about using about it yeah yeah i'm just making sure that yeah i'm clear right now on what you're saying yeah i'm sure we got an email um but i want to make sure i understand now yes so okay because we have because we are responsible for having an evaluation and um right is that more of a teaching and learning or would that be would that be policy that's not a policy i mean it's not really any of those wouldn't that be part of our self-evaluation if we choose to do something like that and then also that would be part of our contract with the superintendent um if it's part of the performance review right okay it's part of the policy so i was bringing it forward thank you okay okay all right i had um and i just i was reading seven colon three one five and seven colon three one zero and this is just something that just wanted to bring up 315 yeah okay so it's page two non-school sponsored publications accessed or distributed in campus so it says i guess i'll let says students are prohibited from creating distributing and or accessing at school any publications that and then number two it says violates the rights of others including not limited to material that is libelous slanderous or obscene or invades privacy of others or infringes on the copyright this might be a little bit nitpicky but i agree with creating distributing um all of those but accessing i don't know i don't know how um discipline is given on these things but accessing something that's libelous slanderous or infringes on the copyright i don't know if there should be anything like a punishment attached to accessing that because a student might not know that that's slanderous or they might receive it and then turn it into an adult as we ask them to do so why would they be punished for having accessed it and then shown it yeah i get that that's that's all i'm saying is yeah i get distributing it and creating it but not necessarily accessing it's everything else under that um one through um that might be school code but we can ask maureen yeah one through six everything else applies to creating i'm sorry you know remember in regards to student discipline first they have the due process you know they have the opportunity hearing and what i tell people because i do a lot of the student discipline at a lot of our other districts and i've done some here as well but you know for not every time a student accesses something is it going to be there for at another school district we had a student who was handing out an n-word pamphlet okay so he was giving it out to all students and not everyone that he handed it to got disciplined in fact the really the only one who got in trouble was the person who created him and a couple of buddies that created so you know yeah that's i think that the person that's creating and distributing it right but the other people were getting access to it or they got an email or they had heard about it and they had heard that somebody had sent something out and they they found it those people weren't really disciplined they weren't disciplined at all so you know what i would suggest you know what does this mean motherboards with these things is that that sometimes you know be the you know when they come when the they come out with this through the press policy you get they're trying to be a little more general so i don't know if that helps you or not i i could see accessing those particular things just seems to me um just like why why would it be in the policy then if we're not gonna well is this a required change can you answer that for us this was not a change no this is not a change at all that's been in there right yeah that was yeah so that's been there but if you have someone who accesses through the something through the internet you want to be able to discipline them if they're intentionally doing something well but that's taking an action the doing the accessing isn't necessarily taking an action right but these are including but not limited too right right so it could be this or i understand what you're saying so if you want us to talk about a committee i can totally take that back yeah yes fine got it you want so you want you want to know punishments associated because bell would know whatever this is well i mean you know we have a lot of policies where we say including but not limited to detention or in school suspension that sometimes we choose to enforce more rigorously and sometimes we choose not to so just so i'm clear when we take this back so if there's any way to get rid of the gray area that'd be cool you know but specifically you want to add like for me it's not great for me it's just it includes all of these things or it could all include all of these things so i guess like when we read it that's kind of just how we took it like it could be this or it could be that and it's on a kind of almost like a case-by-case basis but if you want but i'm totally okay but i just want to be clear about what i'm taking back so for numbers yeah for number two i just think that you know and i'm not a policy wonk to say the least um i just you know accessing libelous slanderous or something that infringes on copyright could be done without knowing that you're doing it the other things obscene or invades privacy others i think can be done knowing that you're doing those things so how are we doing can we yeah we're gonna take this back because i need great i need a little more clarification so we've got some um some very dedicated staff here yeah we do and it's nine o'clock we should be in bed it's 9 37 they should be home in bed well but at the same time policy is how we do our work so we want to make sure that we've got time for that we'll just be cognizant of putting them at the top of the yes oh i agree with that yep oh you know so going forward we'll just make sure that we're considered and thoughtful in that regard sure you're thinking okay okay um go ahead doctor all right item 10.6 is an informational presentation and an elementary social studies curriculum resource we have multiple people here who are we're part of this process and are here to present so mrs dalquist how are you going to start us off yes uh thanks so much we are very excited to talk to you tonight about curriculum resource renewals and proposals it's been so very excited and i want to thank you so much for staying so yeah thank you so much the question is how fast can we do this we got [Laughter] everybody of course knows me and then i'll turn it over to dr allen good evening i'm lindsay allen director of elementary education hi i'm erin gleason language acquisition instructional coach so lolibus first grade dual language teacher hi i'm karen mccaskey kindergarten teacher at prairie point elementary so before our social our social studies pilot began we followed the oswego school district 308 curriculum resource selection process as noted on this slide there were four main reasons why we needed to look at a new elementary social studies resource first our current materials were purchased in 2005 and much of the information is outdated second we needed to ensure that our curriculum aligns to the new illinois learning standards for social science we also needed to make sure that our curricular materials are inclusive and represent the diversity of our students in our classrooms and finally we wanted to make sure that we are utilizing materials that are both available in different and digitally to increase student engagement and to continue moving forward with our technology skills in elementary classrooms we had a total of 20 people on our committee and this consistent staff representing each school building as well as each grade level specialized programs such as the dual language program our sheltered english instruction program and our instructional skills program building and district administration were also included as part of the team so some of the criteria and you'll see this as we talk about our math curriculum for junior high later is we want to make sure that it's aligned to state standards we went through our equity belief statements and reviewed those as we looked at curriculum pieces as well then differentiation including special education english learners and then looking for our support with our different frameworks and having whole group small group and independent means of giving instruction really important that we have articulation from grade to grade assessments uh and then ease of use for our teachers is critical as well and then we have a big emphasis on critical thinking and application and of course we also need to consider cost so first and foremost we need to ensure that we are aligning our instruction and resources to the c3 framework and the illinois learning standards for social science the c3 framework focuses on civics college and career and elementary schools need to shift from a more teacher-focused curriculum to a more student inquiry and application approach children are naturally curious about the complex and multifaceted world they inhabit but they quickly become disengaged when instruction is limited to reading textbooks to answer end of chapter questions and taking multiple choice tests that may measure content knowledge but do little to measure how knowledge is meaningful and applicable in the real world the c3 framework addresses this issue in fundamental ways there are four main areas of focus within the c3 framework civics geography economic and financial literacy and history in civics students need to connect their learning to real world issues and apply problem solving and communication skills they need to explore key concepts in civics and government and connect them to their lives by exploring geography students will understand how people have shaped our planet over the centuries and develop an appreciation for those things that connect us in spite of our geographic differences the study of economics will help students develop the fundamental the fundamentals of economic thinking financial literacy studies will be new at the elementary level and we need to ensure our resources target this area and by studying history students will learn about the past this slide shows the timeline of our two pilots using impact social studies you can see that we began this work in september and completed the second pilot in february during december and january the committee participated in pilot number one this part of the pilot focused on using impact social studies as intended by the publishers teachers used prepared lessons from the teacher's edition passages were read and discussed from the student research companion students recorded their thinking in the consumable inquiry journal teachers had access to the digital impact resources and students were assessed using the assessments created by impact social studies these assessments were multiple choice and sure answer in late january and february committee members participated in pilot number two this part of the pilot utilized some components from impact social studies and focused on students creating an inquiry project as evidence of their learning teachers used the explore magazine to introduce background and content needed to answer the compelling question students used teacher created digital content and the research companion to further explore and answer the compelling questions students selected their projects and continued their research with teacher guidance they were given many choices for these projects including posters creating podcasts writing poetry creating slide decks and many others teachers scored the projects using a standards-based rubric and the compelling questions used for these units were questions that encouraged students to think differently about the topics and did not typically have a single correct answer pilot teachers were given the opportunity to give feedback and reflect on both pilots the majority of the committee members decided that the district created inquiry units which was pilot number two along with select impact social studies resources would provide our students with the best social studies experience and produce the strongest learning outcomes impact social studies offers support for different types of lessons throughout the progression of instruction from whole group direct instruction to small group or independent war this resource offers an extensive amount of enrichment and extra support ideas and activities to ease differentiation opportunities in order to meet the different differing learning styles of all students including english language learners and students who receive special education support the resources from impact social studies combined with district created inquiry units supports teachers in creating lessons with critical thinking and application opportunities for students to demonstrate their mastery of the content through the engage investigate and report take action process through the units students are able to gather organize analyze and synthesize the ideas as they seek answers to the compelling questions the student research companion is a hardcover textbook that includes lessons that help build the students content knowledge during the pilots the students found this resource to be engaging and referred to this resource often while creating their own inquiry projects the impact social studies explorer magazine is a student-friendly resource with graphic novels short articles and engaging images when using this resource the teachers noticed an increase in student engagement and understanding of the content as the materials were written in kid-friendly language and formats all digital and print materials are available in both english and spanish teachers can utilize these online resources in a variety of ways there are songs slide decks online training and learning tips and videos there is a component called impact news and teachers are able to show videos and articles about current events also these online resources allow teachers to upload their own content for lessons that can be saved and used each year both the student research companion and the impact explorer magazine have additional printed teacher resources these resources include a variety of questions that can be used for discussions building background building activities and opportunities for differentiation now we're going to talk a little bit about some of the inquiry work that the students engaged in i had the opportunity to teach this in our fifth grade sheltered english instruction classroom we began our work with a compelling question and when we were writing these units the compelling question was something that we wanted to make sure was very thoughtful didn't necessarily have a right or wrong answer and really got the students thinking and curious about whatever the topic is that they were studying once we introduced the compelling question we went on to some pre-planned more traditional units to build some background content knowledge in the explorer magazine which lindsey had said the kids loved this resource they were um it was just such a kid-friendly tool that the kids just were excited every time we opened it up there's comics it's very engaging for them so after we kind of introduced that content we then moved on to um starting the inquiry project and we presented the students with their topic for the project which was related to the compelling question and also a list of different ways that they could demonstrate their learning with their finalized project so um in the class that i was teaching in their focus was what is the impact of people settling in a new world and their inquiry project where they were to create a project that illustrated the relations between the european settlers and the native americans they encounter some of the choices that the students have were creating their t-shirts posters graphic stories and podcasts which was awesome for our english language learners because they had the opportunity to use the technology this was a fifth grade class so they all had their chromebooks and they were learning how to create that and then also practice their oral language during this process too most of the time spent was the students working on these projects doing their own research collaborating with each other and it was really neat for us teachers to be able to then differentiate more specifically for our students they freed us up as being a guy we realized like okay maybe some sentence frames and a word bank would help these students understand the content a little bit more in depth we also noticed that there were a lot of valuable skills that were developed during this process including time management research skills evaluating sources problem solving and creating and executing a plan which are skills that will help them in life it'll help them in junior high and beyond um so this picture is again just the students working on their individual projects the next classroom is fifth grade they have the same topic this is our instructional skills classroom at fox chase you notice they have dioramas they have posters and again the teacher was able to really differentiate for those students as well i think it's important to note that we did offer a menu of different projects that students could choose from but we also left it with other the student had an idea of the way they wanted to show their knowledge they just needed to speak to the classroom teacher and get that approved and then the classroom teacher helped them with that there ii this is our fourth grade classroom from the pilot their focus was how does america use its strengths and faces its challenges the inquiry project was that students created a project promoting our nation's nation's greatest strengths that's what they could focus on people history or resources and even that idea is one that i could think about and say well to me what is our country's greatest strength so it is kind of a thought-provoking idea for these fourth graders they had the opportunity to explore diverse experiences of the people in the history in our country between the resource materials and the teacher created content they were able to have our students learn about multiple perspectives that exist in our society in these pictures you can see the variety of options the students selected for their projects in this class some students created slide decks while others wrote acrostic poems and others created their own wraps and i did hear the two wraps they did not wrap for me but they had it all written out and they were getting ready to practice their wraps and it was absolutely amazing one student took this topic and not only created a wrap but everything rhymed so they were so excited to show us this and the content they were sharing was absolutely amazing it was really eye-opening that when you really gave the students that choice about how much engagement went up yep um our third grade classroom they were focusing on why does it matter where we live the students chose three features of their community and explored how these features made their community special one of the district or the district-created resources that we provided was a slideshow of all things in sd308 boundaries so the students were seeing familiar things things that they see every day and having discussions about those as well they really really did enjoy that the bottom picture shows some students that created a travel brochure to explain what makes their community unique some other options were writing skits creating graphic novels so really open-ended and this would be our second grade pilot class they focused on how does geography help us understand our world their project was that they needed to imagine how their lives would be different if they lived in different places and they created a project displaying different land forms or different environments they also needed to write about what life was like in these places so one of the students as you can see wrote about what it would be like to live in a more urban area they also created postcards they've created dioramas and it was really neat to see that a lot of the students made connections to a text that they previously read in english language arts called friends about friends around the world where the kids were from different places and they really were able to kind of take more action with that text come on we need to see this while we're waiting uh for the video to load oh maybe there it goes now so that was our first grade dual language at hunt club and our unit focused with our community and our compelling question was how can we describe where i live the inquiry project where students created a project of their choice and included different ways to describe where they lived they some of them created posters uh some of them created diagrams for for the class and it was really fun to see them just engage with their peers um on how to describe where they live and some of them found out they went to the same part without really knowing so it was really awesome to just to see them very engaged with the projects in this video you noticed some students using tpr and for those of you that might not be familiar with tpr is total physical response which is a method of teaching language or um or vocabulary concept by using physical movement and in this video we learned that people live in the community right and we must be good citizens and follow rules to live and work together so students learn that we live in different communities and that we live some of them live in montgomery and some of them live in oswego and they were really surprised they live in the same city and then but we also had one student that lived in plainfield and the teacher that lived in aurora and then we also made those connections oh i have my grandma or grandpa that lives in or i know where that's at so making those boundaries and making those connections with those students were very fun to see and again students were able to describe their project with their peers in the classroom and on to the kindergarten experience with the pilot um as i mentioned before i teach kindergarten at prairie point elementary and within my classroom i also um have the deaf hard of hearing students within my kindergarten classroom so some of these project presentations were assisted by the help of an interpreter just to show um some more facets of how this pilot would work in the in the many classrooms in the district our unit of focus was our country our compelling question was what does it mean to be an american for our inquiry project our students created a project about the symbols of the united states the projects could include information such as national holidays symbols national parks american heroes and more the students also needed to write or verbalize what made their chosen symbol special in the top left picture you see the students in my class engaged in a think pair share activity in this particular activity they're sharing what they would like about visiting mount rushmore and if you look closely at that photograph you can see some of the graphic novel appearance of that impact magazine and then in the additional pictures you see students engaged in the creation of their projects which are focused on an american symbol the students use the explorer magazine some of the curated con content from the district and um simple google image searches depending on some of their project selections i had a few boys that really wanted to do the liberty bell but it was hard to find a good picture of that for them so we used some image searches to locate that while all students engaged in the creation of a poster for this particular pilot their subject matter or their selection of their american symbol was up to them popular choices in my class included the statue of liberty the liberty bell mount rushmore the american flag and a bald eagle students enjoyed the choice element of the project and were also excited that the idea of research for a kindergartner research is a new idea and they really were engaged with that they liked using chromebooks and available resources when the projects were completed the students shared them with the class discussing their symbol and what made it special or important to america some projects included some written words and others were presented verbally which is appropriate for the age kindergarten grade level in the weeks ahead the students enjoyed making connections between this unit and president's day as we began reading biographies about george washington and abraham lincoln their learning has been made more personal to them due to the inquiry projects they feel like they have become their own expert in an area in their chosen subject as we were learning about the presidents just last week leading into president's day weekend i heard kids saying like oh i see the original american flag oh there's our american flag like it looks now because we had spent time on that particular symbol through this unit of study as you can see we created a budget last school year to be used for this pilot during the 21-22 school year we budgeted 13 500 for committee work and much of that will be done if the board of education approves our recommended resource we have also budgeted 425 000 to purchase staff and student materials that will be rolled out next school year the materials will need to be purchased for a successful elementary social studies program and it is all within our budget that we have allocated there are two important steps that need to be taken next in the pilot process effective tomorrow any community member that would like to review our recommended k-5 social studies resources can come to the district administration center and look at these materials they'll be available for review for the next 30 days also we will be bringing back the elementary social studies resource resource pilot information back to the board of education on april 11 as an action item if the board approves our recommendation there are there are several steps that will need to be taken before the end of this school year and over the summer in order to ensure that our teachers are prepared to teach social studies next school year we need to purchase the materials provide ongoing professional development that would start in april create scope and sequences for each grade level and make changes in mastery connect which is the program elementary schools used to report standards-based learning and grading we need to create curriculum maps that are linked to the new illinois standards for social studies and create engaging assessments that will also need to be entered into mastery connect and that concludes our presentation to you so thank you so much for giving us an opportunity to present our recommendation to you tonight do you have any questions that you would like to ask of our group you want to go first i just had one so i'm reminded when i look at the magazine and i think that that's so cool and i i like that but i'm reminded when we had switched a really long time ago the ela where you you know what i'm talking about the durability so the resources that we would be purchasing are none of them are consumable this is the only one that i would say is the most consumable and what we've seen with our ela resources like this we would just need to make sure that we're budgeting and maybe three years to replace some of these and keep that going but the rest of the materials that we have are here to stay so we would there's an inquiry journal that comes along with it it was not engaging it was not higher level thinking and that's consumable we would need to purchase every year and our committee said it was nice but we don't need that no thank you yeah so that would be my only concern so what i'm referring to is when we switched in the elementary school to having the kids get to take books home and it very it was a cool idea that quickly became something we couldn't maintain very easily when you say magazine you don't mean like a periodical so that's not like there's one of those a month that's okay so at the risk of going down the rabbit hole how much time do we spend on social studies in the elementary it will be 30 minutes three times a week all right and then so you have one resource right so i was waiting for you guys to pull out more books because again high school and they would get the research companion they also have all the online components um and the tech that they would be using for it right so again i'm high school not grade school but when you have the same book for kindergartners that you're also using for fifth graders this is one grade level so that's so that's my question it's uh i had i wrote one resource k5 question mark or are there different books for a grade level because i'm looking at what she's got and she keeps picking up the same book right so i just i'm just demoing it i just wanted to make sure that you weren't it wasn't the same book and then um that kind of answers my other question about will you have enough essential questions for five years if it's only one book but it's that there you go and that would not be engaging here after you're going through this well i mean you know but again high school versus grade school go eg just a follow-up question uh the the the annual cost will only be for the one book the annual cost after that that's the replacement it's the online resources and all of this comes included so we are not paying for the teacher resources the student it is the online components that we're paying and it's not an annual um expense for all of those the 425 000 or 35 435 it'll be for six years perfect and other than we might have to in three years three to four years start to um purchase some more of these got it and most of what your what it would take in order to launch is digital therefore the my i guess my question is what the are the materials readily available if this is approved so that you can meet the timeline you have outlined here yes well the other part you're missing is not just buying the resources you also got to have time for the teachers to now make brand new lessons so now you're talking about committee has done an amazing job we've met remotely in hour-long chunks from september to february the bulk of our money that we had for committee work is once this is approved we will be able to bring our teachers in and work for a half day for for a full day to start putting these things together so it's a consistent rollout so when i see more individualized things i see some some classrooms having more success than others just depending on the learning curve for each individual instructor is this able to be made consistent despite that learning curve yes and what we'll do any professional development that we offer to our staff we start with our instructional coaches our building principles and our building assistant principles in three different meetings that i have with them and then they come back to the staff we're very particular about how we roll out our professional development okay i just have a question about the areas with news where are those aggregated from i'm sorry can you say that one more time so if we can we go back a couple of um yes and i guess what is where does that originate from like where is the the rest the source right i would have to look more into that uh what we liked about that though is all the videos and this was the only resource that we vetted where all the resources were in english and in spanish um completely and then within those videos and those articles that are on here they're also differentiated for different reading levels and interest levels too but that is something that i would have to look into where are they pulling those videos the ones that we did see were very kid-friendly um but we obviously did not go through every video that they were so i'd have to go back and look at that i'm just making sure that we avoid like potentially they're not youtube or anything like that okay if that was the question yeah from impact social studies they put everything together and it's right there okay i appreciate that um you can tell these resources were were looked at through an equity lens and that's like really important i mean 2005 this is a long time coming guys so that was my first year so so excited about that and that we have an opportunity to make that kind of an impact and i just love how like you have all the pictures and videos i would love to know how you guys are going to use those videos to inform our community of what we're doing i mean there's so much there they could there could be some really exciting push outs of things to our community about what you're doing i mean i can imagine seeing whoever was doing the wrap like videotaping that and then pushing that out to the community so people can get excited about things that that we're doing so thank you guys so much i want to echo that with the work you know they they took the most industrious route of let's create things around inquiry that can't just be packaged and purchased um and creating that piece so that we called it actually impact light so we weren't inundated teachers with all kinds of resources but giving them activities that are aligned with envision 308 where we want students to have choice and voice in in how they're learning yeah yeah i was gonna i was so in your opinion it and everybody else it aligns with envision 308 and everything that's laid out in there for she said inequity um special education needs okay and we did bring the resources you know for the next 30 days they'll be available at the district office but we did bring them here before you leave if you wanted to flip through them really quick so that you can see too it's 10 o'clock thank you i'm not flipping thank you so much item 10.7 is information on the junior high math curriculum resource so faith and while math uh is coming up and talking about this that 30 day community review process is not something that sd 308 uh has usually done before and i felt that it was critical to be able to put that out there and do those yeah we've done it yeah okay we just haven't had curriculum since we just haven't had a new curriculum is this the math from when my kids were in junior high that we're still trying to okay okay so tonight we're going to talk about junior high math pieces and of course i'm already on there and then we have shannon leaders director of junior high and also amy schultz our secondary instructional coach so just like the same thing before we went through our selection process that includes that 30 days of community review glad that that was already part of the process and then going through and be seeking board approval so why do we need a math resource well good evening um we have had a our math resource since 2014 at junior high originally it was a six-year contract that we had with them when that contract ended we have been purchasing the consumable materials on a yearly basis without a contract we have over the past few years had some scattered usage of our current resource we have a lot of teacher created materials it's just not consistent and that resource really does not any longer meet our needs we reviewed the new edition of our current resource and it did not meet our pilot selection criteria and really important we need a consistent resource for our teachers whether they're brand new or they're veterans we need to have something that is consistent across all five of our schools also important our math assess assessment and achievement scores have been on a decline since pre-pandemic our uh state assessment scores were declining for about three years prior to the pandemic and then this this year's fast grid scores from fall to winter declined at all three grade levels so and that's on the benchmarks so we had a variety of teachers instructional coaches building administrators and district staff that were involved in some way in the selection of either our pilot resources or our final resources and the teachers who piloted within the classroom and you already saw this slide just a few minutes ago with the elementary social studies but again all of the criteria including looking at the equity statements all the way down to cost this next piece is our math framework and i know we're going to go into this a little bit more in depth so i'm just going to go quickly again this is based on the national teachers council of teachers of mathematics mathematical practices where we feel strongly math instruction on a daily basis needs to be whole group and explicit instruction but also small group time for collaboration structures and explaining and then getting to independent practice this next piece is just what that looks like from the teacher perspective of what should the teacher be doing during those times and what would the student be doing during those times so our pilot process actually began four years ago we were beginning to research new math resources for junior high as our contract was ending and then the pandemic came and we've put things on the back burner but this year our pilot process began in october with the selection of our two pilot resources saavis and vision and mid-school math and then we finished with the pilot process in early february during the pilot you can see we had multiple check-in meetings with our teachers and we had additional training sessions with savas on problem-based learning for additional teachers not just our pilot teachers some of those teachers were pretty excited about that training and showed us uh pictures from using some of those ideas the very next day in their classroom so that was interesting and neat to see um at the resource election meeting i will i do need to say we had some discussion with our pilot teachers about whether we actually need to purchase a new resource for math some of our pilot teachers really did feel that we shouldn't go forward with purchasing a new resource at this time it had nothing to do with either one of the two resources we were piloting but that they were questioning whether we should in fact get a new resource at all but we do need to address that decline in math achievement scores and as i mentioned before we need to have a very consistent resource that is available to all of our teachers so our decision process during the pilot all of our math teachers our entire department of math teachers had access online to both mid-school math and envision and in january we presented information and overview of both resources to the entire math department math teachers were then surveyed and asked to provide feedback about both the resources that they were looking at and about the selection criteria and what was most important to them and amy is going to talk about that in just a few minutes and then we had the pilot teaching discussion meeting in early february we gathered all the feedback reviewed all of that and came to a decision and we are recommending saavis and vision for our our new math resource so why was this resource chosen um sabas and vision aligns with our k-8 math framework and best meets our selection criteria it is much more rigorous than our current resource and provides multiple opportunities for problem-based learning for our students each lesson in envision builds from conceptual to abstract thinking in the three areas that are listed there and amy is going to go in depth into those in just a minute so we wanted to hear feedback from the teachers so we gave all junior high math teachers an opportunity to complete a form on what criteria they found most important when looking for a new resource this graph shows what teachers were looking for according to their importance coupled with pilot teacher feedback ranking on how well the pilot teachers felt and vision matched the criteria so differentiation was the top priority all the way down to dei uh you'll notice that articulated progression is starred and that's because most pilot teachers did not pilot two consecutive grade levels so most teachers were unable to rate that criteria but we did have one teacher who piloted two grade levels sixth and seventh grade and that reflects that teachers feedback and so when we talk about this we're going to go from the order of importance so the next slide will be differentiation so in vision 308 in vision 308 one of the major priorities is student learning is for students to have choice challenge and success through differentiation and personalization of instruction as you can see above there are many options teachers can choose from when differentiating to meet the individual needs of students i'll highlight a few unique differentiation tools teachers can use through this program the first is virtual nerd videos these videos can be used as online enrichment or intervention for students these videos break down topics step by step the next is digital tools and there's also digital games that correlate to specific lessons in envision and they help with automaticity fluency and fraction sense there are many opportunities for diverse learners like students with ieps or english language learners to close learning gaps by using intervention lessons additional vocabulary support and mathematical literacy tips there's also a digital and adaptive intervention or enrichment program called success maker next we have assessments and in envision 308 part of the student learning section is to improve the use of data to drive the instruction to meet the needs of all students so once again envision has many different options for formative and summative assessments some formative assessment options for teachers that help drive instruction are try it problems do you understand and do you know how questions there are lesson quizzes that can be taken digitally or in print and the really cool thing about this is when you assign a digital lesson quiz it can be programmed to automatically provide enrichment or intervention to students after they've taken the quiz and another thing i'd like to point out is there's a lot of auto-generated mastery reports when teachers assess students online as for summative assessment there are topic assessments that can be given at the end of each topic and teachers mentioned that they liked that there was two forms of the tests for every topic next is our mathematical framework and uh on the slide you'll see that our k math framework highly aligns with the mathematical practices envision aligns their lessons with the mathematical teaching practices just like we did for our framework so each lesson there's three steps and in step one it correlates with teacher-led instruction where teachers facilitate a problem-based learning activity that invites students to critically think and promotes reasoning and problem solving it also gives students an opportunity to engage with productive struggle and math discourse while teachers facilitate by asking guided questions to support their learning at the start of step two teachers establish the lessons mathematical goal by having students focus on an essential question or learning target through step two teachers use and connect mathematical representations and the questions are in the teacher support are purposeful questions to help facilitate student thinking and for step three that do you understand and do you know how future help students build procedural fluency from their conceptual understanding and teachers can differentiate to meet the needs of their students through that process as for professional development uh envision offers many professional development opportunities for teachers when using this program uh with the teacher edition there are many tips to help teachers with content focus coherence and rigor there are digital classroom videos that show best practice for the entire topic as well as every individual lesson and there's also 24 7 online training features through my service training with technology you can see there's a lot of different options here for technology and in envision 308 it states that we want to drive a prioritization of technology acquisition and use and as you can see it's that envisions on line management system is called saavis and this online management sisters system offers flexibility planning in teaching and learning and it helps monitor student growth and teachers can assign resources search customize their lessons plan assessments and analyze data and this program also has google integration so uh through realize which our current resource does not have and this integration allows teachers to quickly and easily import their google classroom rosters and anything they post through service as for diversity equity and inclusion there's many opportunities throughout this resource as discussed earlier there's many opportunities for differentiation with different ability levels or students whose second language is english for equity students can download download an offline e-text and they when they go home they don't need internet and they can bring it back to school and it will automatically upload nice and as you can see there is evidence of diversity throughout the tasks given in the books and there are relatable real world names and global problems students can explore as for critical thinking with envision 308 we want to provide students more ways to critically think and apply creativity and learning to solve real world problems throughout atypical envision lessons students may have opportunities to show critical thinking through steps one through three which we already discussed and they also have three act tasks for their topics there's a pick a project where students explore exciting topics that are open-ended and they can choose which tasks they'd like to accomplish and there's also stem projects that kick off each topic and students can explore situations that address real social economic and environmental issues and they're all aligned to the next generation science standards and here we have some examples of photos that were taken when i visited some classrooms students said that they liked this resource because it was more focused and they were able to determine their goals and expectations they thought it dove deeper into information and had more detailed examples and many of the students liked the visuals and students felt challenged by this resource in a good way and i will say that um the name and vision and and vision 308.

um so our next steps and timeline we have two upcoming professional development uh days here in march on our institute days we will be focusing on mathematical discourse and collaboration in preparation for our proposed resource adoption beginning tomorrow as many have said the resource will be available at the district administration center and can be viewed also online i believe there's a link we will come back to you on april 11th to ask for a decision and should you approve envision we would want to order quickly to get materials in the hands of our teachers and to be able to provide some professional development prior to summer break faith and i last year created a budget um for this year and it is listed there we are currently under budget with our committee work and our professional development dollars as we asked for volunteers to do the pilot and as you noticed our our willingness was a little um minimal so but we do really appreciate the pilot teachers that did participate it was a lot to take on in the middle of the year um and so i just wanted to make sure i thank all of them and thank amy um for working directly with our math department throughout this year so what questions can we answer for you from you i i have a couple um well two i should say um number one i you don't often hear project-based learning in the math world so is that new is this something that we're already doing and this is just going to continue it or will this start bringing in project-based learning to math so we have not done a lot of problem-based learning in math up until now um not that we shouldn't have uh we probably should are a little bit behind in uh bringing in problem-based learning into math so this will be a start okay and then my second question is is most of the work done on chromebooks uh it is there is a digital component but there is also a consumable for students to use our teachers um within the pilot and our math department teachers really do recommend have the students having that consumable because they can write directly in that and then they have that to take home and to have in the classroom so it's a little bit of both okay thank you i i guess that begs the question is this 350 000 one time or is this an annual so we are currently negotiating with the company to see how far that 350 000 is going to stretch for us it will go at least a couple of years and then we need to see how much we utilize the consumable to see whether we need to be doing that more and more or whether we would pick pieces that we would print so we don't want to commit to buying all of the consumables each year so this price right there is two years we'll need to continue to use more of that but we don't we don't think it would be two years of that expensive every single time right so it's not it's not a 175 000 a year yeah the situation correct do you remember the big thick english books that we brought and i flipped through all of the pages on and my kid hadn't answered any of it that's why we want to review after these first couple of years after we have used the resource to really find out what our teachers believe is important within that student consumable and then as faith said we may be able to reproduce or download and print those in-house so not happy because we also have it all on chromebooks well so i'm pretty i'm familiar with savas and i'm pretty sure that almost all of their stuff is google friendly yes and i'm pretty sure that instead of buying consumables since all of our kids have chromebooks that we could turn those into google docs and the kids could answer them right on the computer and submit them how they've been submitting which would save you guys tons of money which you could use to train the teachers because i don't i don't know how much of you know is bored but if somebody were to come to me and i was teaching for 14 years the same subject and i had all my favorite things that i like to do and every year i could just come in and do that it would be real easy for me to do it's hard to get some of us old-timers to jump on a new and that is hard it's hard to recreate curriculum yes when it keeps recreating right and like some of us have clearly been around long enough to see this this is like a second rotation for me right and it's hard to do which is probably why they didn't get too many volunteers but i also think that you could save some money in consumables just because savas is so google friendly and you could make i think we we do all the google classroom all that stuff should be compatible it is very google friendly but also for students to be able to do math um and have the visuals there as opposed to booking it on the computer and doing those pieces but both there are components of both of that argument that i think are valid we want to provide the sort of support and do that for now and then see what we need to back off from i just i don't want another language arts but of course it is i don't need it completely empty because they make great paperweights like it's so important just quick question what was your experience with the functionality of the online management system the or just the online portion of the actual program i was just doing a quick research as you guys were as you were talking and i just saw some reviews about it so i wanted to know what your experience with the online portion of the program according to the teachers it was fairly easy to use and i think part of that was because it is compatible with our google classroom they can take it directly from it upload it to google classroom as an assignment we do anticipate that there will be some teachers as they're used to a a paper resource or their own that the amount of materials and things that are available can be a little overwhelming if you're not used to doing differentiating and we now have 14 different tools that you might be able to use to differentiate i think some of the the reviews and some of those pieces you'll see that there is so much stuff that they found it hard to navigate until we get in and give enough professional development and they find out what works for each lesson in the teacher's edition it has directly um differentiation for special education students and it's list it's very visually differentiation for english language students along with the lesson but amy had something to add about that so i did take feedback from the pilot teachers because they had the most experience with it and uh the teachers said that they liked the in uh envision integration because it nicely integrated with google classroom which we don't currently have they also mentioned there's a lot of digital opportunities for teachers to utilize if they wanted and some aspects of the program were different to navigate through which from what we're currently using and some of the adaptive practices needed exact answers um and that that's just feedback that they had and that was what i just some of what i just read so i think in a professional development and the implementation of it we may want to consider that so that when we do roll it out the functionality of it is not the reason that teachers push back so absolutely i agree thank you okay thank you so much oh thank them yes thank you so much thanks for staying till 10 o'clock there's some cookies in the back thank you thank you yeah we'll we'll we'll we'll fix that next time well ellie i said the same thing too long but we remember last week we got disrupted our last meeting so we had to put everything from that listen it's just 10 30 and i'm ready to go home okay let's get to action item 11.1 approval of district administrator contracts can i absent commissioner hammerschmidt here commissioner dish is not present commissioner lee here commissioner clark yeah and commissioner white here thank you we have a quorum very good um item three on the agenda is approval of the agenda can i have a commissioner move the agenda moved by commissioner lee seconded by commissioner why can i not think of your name right think so vaguely [Laughter] sorry any discussion of the agenda all in favor please raise a hand or say yes that is all of the hands the motion carries item number four are the minutes of the previous meeting this is from the february 15 2022 meeting can i have a commissioner move those moved by commissioner hammerschmidt seconded by commissioner gibb randall any discussion of the minutes commissioner lee uh just really quickly i couldn't actually access the minutes um i checked on the agenda but uh not to um so i i don't have any comments because i try to review and it didn't come up so just want to throw that maybe i chose like a like an older agenda or something but i i didn't i wasn't able to review it so uh would we like to postpone that it seemed like there might have been some problems with the citation or the kind of link so um would you like to move to postpone approval of the minutes until the next meeting we can get the link sorted yes i would like to postpone all right moved by commissioner lee seconded by commissioner clark any discussion of postponement all in favor of postponement please raise a hand or say yes that is all of the hands next up are the reports from city administration city council the planning office planning commissioner officers and committees and the written communications we have a bunch in our packet that were sent throughout the day today commissioner dish is not here to provide city council comments do you have anything from the planning manager i do not and not because i'm not prepared officially there is no report you would not think it was because you were not prepared okay any complaining commission officers or committee liaisons have anything to report i just wanted to let you know that last week we the ordinance revisions committee did meet and mr leonard shared kind of our past um work plan in addition to kind of everything that we've brought up recently and some work that he's pulled together from a20 and i expect that we're going to who's going to bring all of that together to a future meeting so we can think about what is on our work plan because we've accomplished a bunch in terms of walking through ordinances go ahead commissioner give randall um i actually have something from environmental commission where we talked at length about the proposed resolution for connecting university of michigan and city of ann arbor with the housing and there were substantial um editing from the energy commission and there were lots of comments from environmental commission too and so i guess just so that this body is aware that that's kind of churning through the system um and that at some point it'll come to you know come to us as well so um i i think it's shifting and changing as it goes along um and uh so the the version that we saw is probably you know moot at this point but i'm just so you all are aware that that's been on several people's agendas very good thank you for sharing any other committee liaisons all right um next is item six the public comment this is an opportunity for persons to speak for up to three minutes about an issue that is not listed as a public hearing on this agenda so we will have a separate public hearing for the amendments to the unified development code um we'll first call on folks who are present in council chambers to address the planning commission and then to remote participants and if you're watching us and want to dial in and haven't already done so the call-in number is 877-853-5247 and our meeting id is 977-6634 12 26 if you've dialed in by phone you can press star 9 on your phone to indicate that you'd like to provide a public comment and if you've joined through the zoom link you can just press the raised hand button that's on the center of bottom of your screen you'll hear an automated announcement that the host is allowing you to speak once mr leo has promoted you that way she'll call on you by the last three digits of your telephone number or by your zoom name if you've joined that way please move to a quiet area and mute any background sounds for either method of participation please state your name and address at the beginning of your comments does anyone in the audience like to provide public comment now all right mr leo is there anyone indicating that they'd like to provide a public comment during this general time not not to the udc amendments but to any other items we do have two hands raised for call-in listeners okay caller ending in five three four you have three minutes uh please unmute yourself and you have three minutes to address the planning commission about an item not on the agenda thank you this is tom salberg i'm calling from lowertown tonight in ann arbor uh since i've asked before for information about tc1 uh knowing who is going to be the recipients of the wealth that the city is bestowing upon them the initiated resulting and also council members asked in a resolution for information on that orders as well as on evaluation to know how much the city is gifting landowners that resolution was defeated hopefully um we can still get some information before city council votes on this from the city that he does have information we should know what you know but given i've called for that i think it's only fair for me to say that later on we're going to be talking about art shoe zoning and that i will financially benefit uh from if what is proposed passes or something similar so i think it's only fair if i'm calling for other people to be disclosed that i disclosed myself if i was a commissioner i'd have to recuse myself i presume commissioner lee will be recusing himself as his company also stands benefit from that ordinance revision so i won't make any comments on that that's later for the public hearing in terms of any details but i do hope that we continue to strive for transparency knowing that when we make zoning changes there are people who will be enriched overnight they don't have to build anything the property is worth more the day after the zoning law passes they can sell it to somebody else make a profit they can borrow on increased wealth for the property so the city is distilling the financial benefit of our people i'm not going to say that let's go to bed i'm going to say it's a fact and we can all make our decisions at least knowing the facts openly thank you we have one more i apologize um we have one more caller caller ending in five eight eight please unmute yourself and you have three minutes to address the planning commission to unmute yourself you can press star six there they've done it hello can you hear me we can go ahead good evening members of the planning commission my name is owen franks and i am an attorney at benjamin d joe plc in ann arbor 334 east washington street first i would like to thank you for your time and service to the community we are of the belief that the proposed amendment to the udc regarding marijuana license types and number of licenses per per lot would be helpful to facilitate this sorry to interrupt that this is an opportunity to talk about anything that's not for a public hearing and we'll have a separate public hearing specifically on the ordinance changes so if there's anything that's not specifically about the ordinance amendment now now's a good time to talk otherwise we'll get to that item of business in just a couple minutes oh okay my apologies i won't wait until then all right super all right if there's anyone else that's joined that would like to provide a public comment on an item that's not listed so that's the changes to the udc that incl includes allowing religious assembly in m1 um changes to the marijuana license types r2a curb cuts or curb cuts and street street planting frontage and modifying street tree planting requirements anything else is fair game now you can press star 9 or use the raised hand feature doesn't seem we have anyone on zoom or call-in okay very good um we'll move on then to item number seven which is the public hearings that are scheduled for the next business meeting mr leo do you have those i can pull them up from online too thank you i do not have them handy all right [Music] let's see uh the next public hearing which is on tuesday march 15 2022 at 7 pm we'll be hearing two petitions the ann arbor chinese church expansion for city planning commission approval this is a proposal to expand the existing church at 1750 duvarn road and the second item is maple cove 2 for city planning commission approval this is a proposal to construct a 70 unit apartment complex across three buildings and this is at this is on north miller road and or sorry north maple road in miller road okay we are on to item eight a then these are the amendments to chapter 55 the unified development code because of the technical difficulties and we were concerned that there that might have thwarted any people who were trying to participate uh my intention is that we will postpone the actual vote on this to make sure that anyone who wants to participate can join in um with that in mind we typically start our pr uh our petitions with um a staff presentation and mrs leo in terms of if we can generally keep it brief since we will this will come back for us all in the future does that sound good sure and then we'll open it up for the public hearing on this so for those who have joined we're getting to that very shortly all right um okay um i will give it one attempt to screen share and then we'll just call it all right so screen share let's screen share these slides share that i wasn't say folks at home may be able to see it better than us all right i think we think we're cooking with gas go get your glasses folks all right okay um presented before you tonight are some amendments to chapter 55 which is the unified development code there are five you can they i tried to format it so that you can act on them as a group or individually for example if you would like to um not tonight but if you would like to pass three or four of them but postpone one or two um i did try to do that in that format but for efficiency it is one staff report but there are five amendments the first one is into table 515-1 which is the primary use table i should mention that in the packet and all the planning commissioners have been provided with the the full ordinance of proposed amendments um the presentation just calls out just zooms right into what the skips all of the not changes so the first amendment is to section the table and 515-1 which are the primary uses primary uses are those that are permitted in the district no further questions asked they are appropriate everywhere in that zoning district and we um by request we are considering a proposed amendment to allow religious assembly uses in the m1 district you'll notice the table combines m1 and m1a so that's why there is a p parentheses excluding n1a in this box changes were not advertised to the m1a district i mentioned this was by request folks are allowed to petition for ordinance amendments this was considered by the ordinance revisions committee and there are other assembly type uses that are permitted in the m1 district and the earnest revisions committee felt that this was a worthwhile amendment it was appropriate and they recommended approval as you know that doesn't that is not binding but that is the amendment before the planning commission the next amendment is to section 516.3 g which is marijuana facilities we're doing three things here we are doing two substantive changes and then one just a reorganization the substantive changes are to delete paragraphs d which is number of state marijuana licenses per lot and delete paragraph e which is types of facilities on a lot this slide shows that the table and the lists being deleted what you can see from the table that certain districts are allowed certain number of licenses per per lot what we have found and as the state continues to evolve its regulations rules and regulations is um they have specific to growers and this is just an example but specific to growers i don't know the number off the top of my head but say they categorize large growers as um a thousand plants and what they have now done is they they are not issuing single businesses a two thousand plant license their what they are doing is they are issuing the same business two licenses a thousand and a thousand here in ann arbor what that means is a large grower couldn't do that because we in some districts because we would only allow one license in the district now that our marijuana facility regulations are in place the landscape is sort of settled it is our staff's opinion that we don't need these licensing restrictions um per district um we don't anticipate a mad rush or really anything changing so therefore this is just a piece of regulation that is probably unnecessary and is could prove to be in conflict with state uh state procedures the other paragraph e is types of facilities per lot you may recall when developing the regulations we were very conservative and we really wanted we did not want concentrations we did not want things bundled everything should be spread out again now that things have shaken out um we don't think it's gonna it's going it has not been an issue it's not going to be an issue to allow um different or multiple facilities on a single lot and also the way it has it is listed it can be vague and code shouldn't be vague so we are proposing to again delete this paragraph then for reorganization we've flipped the format without changing any of the rest of the stuff the old layout focused on the standards it was and you can see here this is the layout and the headings um and each of the standards is listed there we're just reorganizing and flipping it to um organize it based on facility so you can more easily find the additional use specific standards for the specific what you're looking for provisioning center or micro business or designated consumption facility um but we haven't changed any of the the content no numbers have changed no additional information or lack of information the third amendment is to table 7517-2 two-family residential zoning district dimensions specifically the r2a district we are proposing to reduce the minimum lot area from 8 500 square feet to 5 000 square feet reduce the minimum lot area per dwelling unit um from 4250 square feet to 2500 square feet and the minimum lot width from 60 to 40 feet i had this is the the one topic i have a little bit more background on the r2a district is intended to provide the residential um basically higher density single family density with a single family feel and but it's a minimum lot area and lot area for dwelling unit goes along with that has come up and it's now more in line with some of our lower density single family districts so we are proposing to have its it match the r1d district um which is a higher density single-family district and so the dimensional standards we are proposing to match r1d um it would still allow two dwelling units on that lot but the physical characteristics would then match the r1d um this is a map of where you'll find r2a zoning currently you'll see that it's um in gen the bulk of it is in the waterhill neighborhood also the old west side there's a little bit um in the burns park area south of campus and some pockets on on uh broadway pontiac trail um right across um over that way um currently current standards of the r2a district with the 8 500 square foot lot size and 60 foot lot minimum the majority of lots do not comply the yellow is compliant but the blue is non-compliant also known as non-conforming with the proposed amendments um we flip and the yellow is compliant so the yellow proportions on the left is minimum lot width those would be the ones that conform to the minimum lot area i'm sorry width on the right side is lot size and so the yellow would be what would conform and the blue is what would remain non-conforming oh next one um okay um i'm happy to i anticipate that maybe the most questions will come up about this one so i'm happy to answer any questions um at the conclusion but those are our proposed amendments regarding our 2a district and then the fourth amendment is to section 520 10 b trees required with site plan developments the track changes is shown on the screen what we're going to do proposing to do is eliminate the width of the curb cut from the linear calculation right now it says one street tree shall be provided for every 45 linear feet and the change is one street tree provided for every 45 linear feet minus the width of the curb cut on larger lots it's not really a big deal to count the curb cut but on a very small lot there might you might require a street tree but the curb cut takes up so much width the tree will not thrive or survive also two trees or more likely two trees might be required but really there's only space for one because half of the lot is the curve cut and we are also proposing to eliminate the references to street tree escrow the escrow is money that is collected from um developer and but they are still supposed to plant the trees and then so we collect the money they plant the trees three years later we return the money we are entitled if they don't plant the trees to keep the keep the escrow money and then use it to plant trees the escrow formula doesn't actually cover the cost of planting trees but the more important part is this is a lot of paperwork this is a lot of money being tied up for little gain when we also still have our regular security i think most people would call it um posting a bond or a performance bond but when you go to finish your project it is legitimate that it might be outside of the planting season you might not be able to plant a tree in february or plant grass so forth so you can post a bond and say as soon as the planting season comes up i'll plant i'll plant a tree if you do both of those things it's also fairly redundant and just kind of seems pointless so it seems more efficient and a better use of everyone's resources to eliminate the street tree escrow and if the trees cannot be planted for some reason we can do it through our regular performance bonds that are already required um we are also proposing to add headings to this section to make it a little bit more user friendly and then finally the fifth amendment is to section 530.1 landscape modifications um the the bulk of the change regard is regarding adding street trees as an eligible modification um if you follow the current format what we're doing is um on the left the sentence says flexibility in the application of landscaping or screening requirements and lists some sections and so we are inserting one more section into this but with our reorganized layout it's going to look like the right adding a title listing the sections with their titles list form but you can see here again the only real substantive change is adding the street trees and then for all the proposed um layouts the current layout is as on the right we've got the heading and then the sentence that says which sections um you can change and then it's got a and b a is standards of approval and buried in 2a are the seven conditions that are associated with modifications um we have proposed the proposed layout change would just list them a little bit more logically section a would be these are the sections you can modify section b this is the required conditions um in order to be approved c is standards of approval and d is the approval procedures i feel that a chunk is missing so i'm going to stop sharing this and i'm going to smoothly transition to this go back again smooth as silk screen sharing over here right i do fear that this may become slightly small but it will help prompt nonetheless in this landscape modification section i will be fairly brief but there are seven now proposed to be eight reasons why you can have a landscape modification um the first one is regarding topography or elevation of the site and we are proposing to a move it into the list by itself but then b um rewording it to instead of talking about topographic features just say when the topography or the elevation of the site relative to another site makes the screening not effective that's legit reason to modify it is another reason that when existing vegetation and landscaping are located that more would be detrimental proposing to rephrase this to try to be a little more straightforward and talking about when the planting or installing the required landscape materials would be more detrimental than the benefits of the additional screening that is also a condition that can be considered there is a condition that talks about use of bioretention areas native and prairie plantings structural amenities or xeriscaping and we are proposing to change that i don't believe we've ever used those reasons um to grant a landscape modification but our experience is increasingly showing that a reason that we should be granting a landscape modification is when the soil conditions underlying the site prevent the strict application of the requirements for example you may require a bio retention swale for infiltration but that should not go right on top of contaminated soils and so strict application is is at odds with each other this is a reason why a modification might be appropriate we are proposing to eliminate the plan project reasoning because we don't have plan projects anymore and then we are adding the description of why you might want to consider a modification to street trees we've made them eligible in a previous amendment and now this is saying that um planting a new street tree if it's prevented by an existing and unmovable obstruction impediment public infrastructure and examples fire hydrants overhead utility lines poles traffic control devices transit shelters if those are blocking the planting of a street trade this might be a uh landscape this can be considered for a landscape modification so those are the five amendments that we are proposing we are recommending approval of them all i feel like i whip through them that probably took longer than i thought but happy to answer any questions doing a follow-up that might be needed when this comes back and with that i will turn it over either to the commission or the public hearing next up is the public hearing so as before um uh well let me start by saying this is an opportunity for persons to speak for up to three minutes about the proposed changes to chapter 55 of the unified development code as before we'll first start with any folks who have joined us here in council chambers and then moved to remote participants again if you're watching us and need to dial in now the call in number is 877-8535 and our meeting id is 977-6634-1226 if you've dialed in you can press star 9 to indicate that you'd like to provide a public comment if you have joined through the zoom link you can use the raised hand feature mr leo will call on those who have indicated their interest in speaking calling on you by the last three digits of your telephone number or by the name you've entered through zoom please move to a quiet area and mute any background sounds including television so that we can hear you clearly whether you're participating in person or remotely please provide your name and address at the beginning of your comments would you like to provide public comment during the public hearing sure this is on any of them any of the five sure absolutely um any remote participants we do have one raised hand um collar ending five eight eight um please unmute yourself and you have three minutes to speak to the planning commission about these proposed amendments okay hello members of the planning commission can you hear me we can oh okay well hello hello again my name is owen franks and i'm an attorney at benjamin d joe plc in ann arbor we're located at 334 east washington street and i'd like to thank you for your time and service to the community i just want to start by saying that the proposed amendments to the udc regarding marijuana license types and the number of licenses per lot would help the city and local licensees and as it's currently worded the code sections at issue seem to be pretty vague and open to interpretation and we are of the belief that appropriate amendments to the udc would allow for some more clear guidance under the code and mimic what the state guidelines currently allowed for now as previously mentioned at the start of this call these amendments would allow for any number of marijuana facilities on a single lot as well as allowing for multiple of the same kinds of marijuana license types on one line however these amendments would still leave open the question of how many different types of licenses a light agency may have at a single location and we believe that in addition to the proposals currently being considered the code should also be amended to be clear that any number of marijuana license types on a single lot are permissible or at a minimum to allow for more combinations of types of licenses on a single lot we think that allowing for any number of licenses on the lot subject to the obvious zoning restrictions and allowing for any mix of types of licenses on a single lock should be considered by the commission for simplification and as well as updating you know best practices within the city and it would also mimic what the state guidelines currently allow for essentially to try and simplify it so the best that i can we are especially requesting the commission to consider that marijuana licensees in the city of ann arbor have the ability to stack licenses and the ability to have different types of licenses on the same land thank you for your time and consideration thank you we have one more unless you've changed your mind we have one more of caller that has raised their hand caller with phone number ending five three four you have three minutes to address the planning commission hello again this is tom stalwart calling from lower town in ann arbor uh some of you may know but not everybody listening they know one of my hats that i wear is a property manager and i'm a part owner in some of those properties and manage properties for other people that i don't have ownership interest in under both categories we have some r2a zone properties uh so i will be a beneficiary of these changes a couple questions i have for you which i know you don't have to directly answer but be helpful if you were to describe what notice was given for these changes and who received notice for your next meeting who might receive notice as well and again when it goes to council who will get notice of these changes there was concern for the adu ordinance revisions about lack of direct notice to 20 000 impacted residences that was brought up at a prior city council meeting a couple years back and city council turned it down because they felt that better public notice and engagement was important a couple years went by instead of getting more public education and notice just a new council said go ahead people asked for at a minimum a postcard just to go out to those twenty thousand packs of residents so they would have direct notice and i believe that would i believe it's appropriate to err on the side of giving notice more rather than less so i hope you can take that into consideration and give better notice on these changes and i think it would help the public to compare given the new adu ordinances that have affected the adu ordinance revisions effectively eliminated single family dying that the name is kept the label is kept for r1 etc uh but two habitable dwelling units are allowed on every residential you know a lot except for home i believe that's r6 so i think it's worth comparing uh what the adu would be to uh duplex there are some differences that i know but the publicly helped if you could cover that uh personally i like duplexes i think it's a wonderful opportunity for owner occupancy by financing with renting out one unit inside you know occupying the other unit that you buy of the two uh hopefully those opportunities will be increased by an increased number of duplexes uh which hopefully that this is intended to do not just bring in to conformance some non-conforming lots but add additional um duplex capability additional units to the housing stock so i think that would be beneficial again i want to put the disclaimer out that i would be one of the beneficiaries financially of these changes the only question from my group my investment group is do we have if these should pass that planning commission then subsequently council do we act on google or do we wait until we get four units per lot which some people are advocating some um three minutes three minutes has elapsed please wrap it up thank you bye if there's any other callers who have joined via phone or zoom that would like to provide a public comment during the public hearing you can press star 9 on your phone or use the raised hand feature there are no additional callers on calling or zooming okay if you'd like to go ahead okay all right hi jeff penco 213 west madison considering the marijuana amendment i have two comments if the overall goal was to allow greater concentration of marijuana businesses in areas where they are most appropriate i think there would be a lot of support for this so in commercial or industrial areas far from residents it would make sense to allow the higher density of these businesses but do these changes run counter to the goals of the 600 foot separation portion of that um wouldn't it be better and more equitable to remove the 600 foot separation at least in these areas is it equitable to have two lots next to each other and grant more licenses to the first lot than denied the neighboring lab for many of these businesses due to the barrier is this proposal the best course of action and then for other zones that have residential areas nearby i believe the status quo is best these limits will mitigate the impact these businesses have on the neighborhood i would like to ask you to remember that most of the recreational facilities did not go through the current marijuana approval process they were grandfathered in and the immediate neighborhoods were not involved why further remove protections for these neighborhoods in addition planning commission has commented at least on one of these sites that the proposed changes would not have any immediate impact due to other current limitations that are on existing then why expand them for these sites that there is no need and would have no impact keep the status quo and make changes due to the due to a need and cause beneficial change you know at that time so i asked is this amendment the best course of action forward the second comment i have is about the local neighborhood involvement in this process while other amendments are in general and have a diffuse impact amendments affecting special use exemption businesses have a high impact the limited region like the earlier caller it could be practical to provide additional communication to these areas that when plans are under consideration and get their involvement you know at earlier stages or if you have other needs for interested parties to stay informed i'd be grateful to hear of them thank you for your time and attention thank you no other indication has come online has it mr leo oh yes um we have okay group help the color ending in five three four has a hand raised but i'm we've already done that one right okay so no i forgot to lower the hand um there and there aren't so there are no additional ones new ones all right very good uh i'll close the public hearing and read the motion um the ann arbor city planning commission here by recommends that the mayor and city council approve the amendments to chapter 55 unified development code as proposed and generally described as table 5.15-1 to allow religious assembly use in the m1 district section point 5.16.3.g to eliminate marijuana license type and numbers of licenses per lot as well as to reorganize for clarity table 5.17-2 to decrease the minimum lot size minimum lot area per dwelling unit and minimum lot width in the r-2a district section 5.20.10 to exclude curb cuts from street tree planting frontage calculations and remove references to street tree escrow and section 5.30.1 to add eligibility and conditions to modify street tree planning requirements by landscape modifications as well as clarifications and reorganization of that section can i have a commissioner move this moved by commissioner silvay second and by commissioner guys i don't know what my my brain is not working tonight i think i need caffeine or something i hear you um [Music] any again i do think that we should wrap this up but if there are any questions that people have for clarification or additional information that people would like staff to bring before we see this next time this i think that might be a good thing to collect go ahead commissioner hammerschmidt just one little thing on the r2 hey i'm just curious and don't spend a lot of time trying to get this data but when you know you have the pie charts and like what would change and be conforming i'm just curious like what what if there's a way to sort of articulate like what is what is the rest of it like i saw some of the public comment that was like oh can we you know why isn't this setback the same as or like wasn't it 10 feet why is it 20 feet if we if is there any little thing that's changed that would make more of them conforming am i making sense like what are those little slices once we make these changes and is there like is there anything else like if we did make the minimum lot size um smaller you know like would we capture more of it to make more of them conforming um does that make sense yeah so i'm just curious what's left over i guess like what are what are the um what are the yeah what are the characters thank you what are the non-conforming characteristics after we would apply these proposals i guess my brain doesn't work either you can't see that yeah we can't see that and so yeah now you don't do it right now i don't need to know right now but bear with me words not good no got it they are split i think we're highlighting but they add up to 100.

i guess we'll go to 5.0 presentation and discussion topics 5.01 certification pathway program dr mccord thank you madam president governing board members um we'll bring up to you tonight you guys coming really you need an invitation at this point so this is this is i'm pretty excited about this this is a um pathway program for people who want to be teachers that have degrees and um this is definitely a way to help with the teacher shortage and fulfilling the dreams of those who always wanted to become a teacher so i'll turn it over to these guys and they'll give you the details all right good evening madam president members of the board we are very excited to introduce and inform the public and each of you about our certification pathway program so by way of history in november um at a conference otm conference a hr statewide conference we learned that we could become under because of a law under arizona revised statute we could become our own teacher-in-residence program so with that we have to apply and each of the core or each of the areas of certification we have to apply for with the name of the program the certification type of the program and then in order to qualify for our employees who would enter the program they have to have a bachelor's degree a valid fingerprint card and then we have to certify them under emergency or alternate teaching certificate then we have to provide some data supporting the efficacy of these teachers and the program itself so just one question are we calling the pathways program or do we have a name we do good questions we finally landed on a name okay that that's what i wanted it was almost the hardest part of the whole thing and it is the gps certification pathway program with a tagline of connecting talent to teaching okay thank you i have one more question on that so do we already have some people in our schools who qualify like this with a bachelor's degree a fingerprint card an emergency or alternative teaching certificate great question yes we do so under teacher and residency programs like rio salado or grand canyon university we have some teachers who are utilizing that pathway program instead of our own but we're excited to build our own because we feel like it be much more robust and they'll be in taking art classes with our instructors our instructional coaches etc instead of having to pay tuition and go to night school the weekend work et cetera we can get it done during an extended calendar which we'll talk about for these employees so our design teams work is this you or me okay um we have to create the proposal and complete the application and the um person that will be assisting us with this the most will be mary she's our program administrator for this so let's give her a whole name for people watching at home well i know her as married traffic connie but it's mary longnen so we're excited to have her on board we've had a committee we created in december which was made up of administrators special ed personnel induction professional development employees district and administration and we also invited the arizona department of education staff as they're going to be crucial in improving our application so we wanted to get them on board early and pick their their brains about that so right now we are applying for three areas to be certified um with the state board of education and that's elementary education k-8 mild moderate disability special ed k-12 and early childhood special education birth through grade grade three it's a two-year program and it leads to a 12-year teaching certificate um or with the two-year program there's potential for a third year if we need to have somebody go through and provide further support for a third year this slide here is just showing over the course of since 2016 the number of certified teachers who are choosing to take an alternate pathway as opposed to the traditional asu college of education u of a college of education so you can see a 30 percent increase in those teachers who are choosing to take the alternate pathway good evening um there's some program advantages um as you add asked about our teacher in residence programs we believe that we could provide a much better um experience for our teachers and for our students by having this program so one of the ways is we can develop our teachers as they are learning and right along with that what our teacher expectations are here in gilbert and what are the needs of our students are instead of them learning their coursework elsewhere and then coming and teaching but then going and learning about something else we can embed everything and we'll talk a little bit more about that after we'll be able to recruit invest and retain alternative pathway teachers we believe that our induction program right now is extremely strong we have data that we are going to be submitting with the application and you know what of the 60 participants that completed the survey we had retained 58 out of 60.
