Happy to answer any questions you may have. >> Perfection, are they local? Any other questions or comments? Thank you for that information. We appreciate it. Finally, 7.03, consideration to approve updates to policy 4307, the wireless communication devices. Mr. Cannon, believe it. >> Good evening, President Duckworth, members of the board, and Dr. Hoover. Uh for your information tonight, Senate Enrolled Act 78 amended Indiana law governing student use of wireless communication devices during the school day. Notable changes include defining the school day as the entire time a student is present on the school property during an instructional day, what we would normally call bell to bell. And requiring that devices be powered off and inaccessible to students throughout that time. The proposed revisions align policy 4307 with updated statutory requirements while establishing establishing clear and consistent expectations for student device use during the school day. To meet the July 1 effective date, the office of the chief of staff is offering these revisions for your information tonight and will return on June 8th for your final approval.
I would recommend approval. All right. Any questions or concern? Hearing none. I need a motion. >> I have a second. >> Second. >> Any discussion? >> Hearing none. All those in favor? >> I opposed. That carries have fun. >> I'm jealous. >> All right. Next up, we have the overnight ghs trip to discover Japan, Kyoto to Tokyo, June 5th, 2028 to June 13, 2028. >> Yep. And so again, this is another voluntary opportunity um spearheading this effort, initiative, all necessary paperwork. Obviously, Chapron, same organ, same organization. Uh the difference being this would take place during summer. So no no school being missed again allowing time for families to budget for safe. It would be my recommendation that the board approve this opportunity for our students. All right.
Um I I know I I brought up the band uniforms at the beginning of the meeting. Um I just, you know, I wanted to kind of circle back. Um the the request was made in February. Um we're kind of already past the point where we might get be getting the uniforms in time for marching season. Um it's really it really is a shame cuz they're in really rough shape and they could really use the support. Um as we try to support all of our organizations. Um I I know that they came and they made the request. I don't know that other organizations or other activities have to come and make requests for uniforms. Um we we provide those because we should. Um we provide, you know, all the things that we're supposed to. Um I know the boosters are great support and I know that they take on a lot because we do not, you know, provide any funding for the band.
Well, okay. Why don't we stop by the front here since you have Is it on? Okay, yes. Um, maybe a stupid question, but is anyone working on a filter? Since this is a inorganic material in our bloodstreams, can it be filtered out? Somehow? Um. What what What are you What are you interested in filtering out? Plastics. The plastics themselves. There's some, um, greenwashing happening. There's some companies that are, um, advertising that. You don't do it. Um, there's not evidence that that is actually, um, working yet. And you're just going to be re-exposed. So, uh, I wouldn't put any money into that, but people are thinking about that, but I don't think it's at the that the point of I I guess part of the problem would be that we do absorb plastics directly through our skin. So, if you're in exposures, whether it's your carpet, your clothes, you know, if any of the the sprays that you're using, at that stage, what are you going to filter?
So, starting with air, the indoor air data we have, um, which is is marked on the plans, it's about 16 years old. It may not represent current conditions. However, typically with air samplings, Mr. Campbell and the LSP expect that those concentrations would typically decrease over time. Um, so, we anticipate that they would be lower now than they were. The following list of compounds exceeded mass DEP residential threshold criteria, um based on the 16-year-old data. And there are two locations, the 50 sample which is shown here. Uh so it was in this portion and the Show Show that again. Uh it's it's right here. Thank you. >> You can see Everyone see that? Yep. And the other sample was the uh 1020 sample which is right here. And you said in the corner of the building. Those Repeat what that is again. But those sites are exceeding These sites exceed the MassDEP residential threshold value criteria.
They also did a unit on the Middle Ages. Some students were selected as king or queen of the day. Um and their teacher would read their name from a scroll. Um and they wore a crown and got to make some decisions in the class. They were also the line leader. Um and then they also ended that unit with a hands-on learning activity where they did a station rotation um with events or activities from what would be considered the Middle Ages. So things like building a catapult and testing it um and also making some stained glass. And then fifth grade um for their donkeyote unit, they had the opportunity to create costumes and really act out scenes um but also making or expanding the scenes, making dialogue and continuing um you know acting out how they would perceive scenes to have happened. >> Thank you, Mr.
>> And price of gas. And price of gas and not being away from their families, right? Etc. in that scenario. So, I've always said to many of you that Greenfield is is a great place. I've enjoyed being here. I I did a little stint 2 years ago. Welcome back. >> Back. Thank you for having me back. I like the people. I like the quality of life up here. I grew up my whole life skiing at Berkshire East, right? Um in this area. I don't think it's for lack of you're you're not doing anything wrong. Just there's not as many human beings >> Location. up here. And and that's the battle right now is demographics and life the number the population declines, right? Of student aid students in America and you know, also adults. That's something you're grappling with and we're seeing that the entire county grappling with that whether it's with the um regionalizing, you know, one of the one of our speakers on Friday talked about how the state given years ago incentives to regionalize.
So maybe I maybe I'm recalling her saying that we were consistent with the state rather than a question about growth. It was simply consistent Yeah. And and actually better than the state averages are Lower than the Yeah. Our our identification rate is lower than the state average. But it has gone from a lower percentage of the overall population to a higher percentage over time. And that is very consistent with what the state has experienced for myriad reasons. From you know, doctors being better at diagnosing things earlier. Think of autism for example is a much different diagnosis today than it was 20 years ago. And our knowledge of that medically gets diagnosed earlier. So we have you know, advocates and the like push for identification in a different way than used to happen. I think what we're good at is when those concerns are raised in the system, trying to work through interventions to determine to what degree does a student respond to these interventions.
Experiences like this help me make connections, and take what I'm learning in class, and then apply it to the real world. It allowed me to think creatively, apply business concepts, and then learn from the experience in a really meaningful way. All right. Um going forward, we'd like to continue to expand um our use of authentic assessments. Um students we do students do reflect on um on different assignments, but we want to add more um more student reflection after um completing assignments. Um so that's another goal. We'd like to continue to um strengthen and look at our assessments and improve on those. Um and then we'd also um like to bring in um local business people um when kids are giving presentations to you know, have them see what the students are are doing um for different assessments um and then to get feedback. So we think that might be a little something fun for the students and for >> partners in Cheshire right now in the area?
She is most proud of being a good friend. Julian Hindershot. >> [applause] >> Julian is on the honor roll and will receive an academic letter. Julian Julian is most proud of the friends that he has made along the way. Devery Landers. >> [applause] >> Devery was on the high honor roll and will receive an academic letter. Devery is most proud of making the game-winning last-second shot in a basketball game against Lewisburg this year. Mariska Hernandez. Mariska is most proud of working hard to maintain her grades in class throughout middle school. Hadley Hope. >> [applause] >> Hadley was on the high honor roll and will receive an academic letter. Hadley is most proud of her improvements in sports throughout middle school. Will the third row please stand? Cole Jasper >> [cheering] [applause] >> COLT WAS ON THE HONOR ROLL AND WILL RECEIVE AN ACADEMIC LETTER. Colt is most proud of improving himself as a person and athlete.
We are absolutely not happy about letting anyone go and if we could bring everyone back we will. That that's not done for performance reasons. And that's really where we are where we are, but I appreciate the board listening to a lot of these reasons. They really had I don't want I don't want to say you had no say in it cuz that's not completely true, but the reality is is that these are the recommendations of the chief school administrator. Um that's why they're done by a certain date. Um and that's why, you know, again, um one of the reasons why I was brought here was to to kind of make sure that our finances were were were stable. Um we're going to be again, I'm going to say it again, and I don't know how else to tell everybody this except to say it, but they're talking about health care going up again, another 40 45%.
And now in our 13th year, as we approach this finish line, that checkered flag remains absent. For each of us, this is one of the most exciting things we are yet to accomplish. But more remains ahead. So whether you spent this school year as a part of a slow pitch softball team, >> you did your best to not let senioritis get to you or you rep Dorado Den at every game, do not let the lack of a flag man discourage you. Be proud, be excited, and at least pretend to be inspired by a word by my words to you this evening. And finally, to our biggest fans cheering us on as we cross this finish line, thank you. [applause] >> Thank you, Izzy. I would now like to ask our student body president to come to the stage, Carter Dupo. >> [cheering and applause] >> It looks like Yep.
Um if the group is willing to I think the most likely way to actually get something on the books would be to make it one of the tasks next year for this committee. >> Okay. Um >> and I cut you off. You were going to do a second thing but >> No. Well, let's we can go and wrap this one up. Um so then do so what is our recommendation? Do we want to recommend that there is like a review specifically for our special population of students who um identify within that community or do we not want to recommend that? Do we think that should be somewhere else? This kind of like opening it for discussion. What are your initial thoughts? >> Can you clarify what you mean by a review? So, it's not so much a review right now because we really don't have very much.
Um, can I go now? This is Stephanie. Yes. Thank you. Okay. Awesome. I need help sometimes. That's all right. So, now I would like some nominations for president pro tem. I move that Stephanie Duckman be appointed president pro tem. >> [snorts] >> Okay. There are no other nominations. Congratulations, Stephanie Duckman. All right. Um So, now we are going to I'm asking now for nominations for office of president. I nominate Elizabeth Massa for the president position of president to the Board of Education. Okay. Are there any other nominations [clears throat] for the office of president? All right. Um, since there are no other nominations, the president um If there are no further nominations, nominations for the office of president are closed. Elizabeth Massa being the only candidate nominated for the office of president, the chair hereby declares her elected by acclamation and directs the secretary to so record in the minutes.
The next two slides um gave us a little bit of pause, um but in a way that we reflected on um some of the loves and joys of working with teenagers. So, our staff um reported having more relationships with EL students and IEP students, but our EL students and students with IEPs um reported the opposite. So, EL students were more likely to report zero to one relationships, the reverse of the staff, and students with IEPs were also more likely to report zero to one relationships. So, when we reflected on that, obviously, we reflect very seriously on wanting to really lean in and make sure students feel connected, and also feel like it's okay to remind students that we love them and they love us and that it's okay to identify those relationships. This is This is the same slide. Um and then also, like Courtney said, there was no correlation with students on the free and reduced lunch status.
So, we look for um comparing students to the standards that we're trying to teach, not uh grades. So, that's kind of where we're at. That answers a few of your questions. >> [laughter] >> That answers a couple. >> I know. It's okay. >> Um in some of the other questions that I asked you, can you share some of those and kind of answer them so that the other board members can kind of hear them. >> Yes, hang on. Let me bring >> I wasn't able to read the email yet either, so I'll just be hearing them for the first time too. >> have you're here. >> Yeah, um yeah, and I was doing it on on, you know, you were probably driving here. Um you asked what specific problems that we were trying to solve and um why do teachers want it? Um then I said traditional grading combines things um other than ask academic mastery.
Um and we hope that you'll come back and see us in whatever capacity that is. Don't feel that uh the doors to Avon have closed. Just um think of new things that maybe you can give back as you have to our community. Um one thing I'd like to ask is that I know for at least my husband of 42 years, I didn't work for 42 years and not um um have help from him. I think it's important that we recognize the guests that you've brought with you. Um and because they've contributed to this moment. Um that is for sure. So if we could start over here, if you have a guest that you brought as a retiree, would you please introduce them for us? Yes, I have my husband Scott and three of my four children. My daughter's husband. Okay. Thank you, family. Thank you so much.
Are there any discussion or questions? Sure. >> [laughter] >> She's lucky. She looks very happy. It's a good sign. It is a good sign. We'll do a roll call vote. I believe we're ready for the question. Ms. Wheeldon, how do you vote? Yes. Mr. Major, hear your vote. Yes. Mr. Nollan. Yes. Chair votes aye. Ms. Lloyd. Yes. And Mr. Glick. Aye. Very good. We have a motion carried 6-0. Congratulations, MS. COLLINS. >> [applause] [applause] >> GOOD EVENING AND THANK YOU TO THE BOARD FOR this incredible opportunity and for your trust in me. I am truly honored and honestly just very excited to join Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation as the assistant superintendent of human resources. I want to thank Dr. Phillips and the interview committee for this opportunity. It was such a positive experience and you could just see and hear in everything they talked about the positives of the school corporation, the student-centered focus, as well as their dedication to this community and school corporation.
So, I think Brady can show the next slide. >> So, this is going to be like what we focused on. So, uh research data collected from 2015 to 2025 that Central School spirit has increased by 30%. Stakeholders indicate that this new point of engagement, like a t-shirt cannon, can and will improve school engagement by 87%. 87% of students and staff also desire another point of involvement at pep sessions and sporting events. So, that's why we kind of decide um we wanted to develop a solution that increase this audience involvement and excitement at Benton Central sporting events and pep sessions. >> Okay, so this is our timeline and our Gantt chart. And so, we started this back in October. And if you look at the top, that kind of just follows our research and our development of our logo, which, if I say so myself, is very nice.
Uh any discussion? All those in favor of approving the claims signify by saying aye. Aye. Aye. Those same sign? Abstentions or Abstention Abstention, that's the word. Um hearing none, motion carried. I'll make a motion to adjourn. Second. I'll second.
