It is important to make sure that that is not going to be a safety issue. Um, but it's very important for us to help re-engage that student. The teacher then gets that time to move forward with their class while the student is out and then we could reassess what's going on. A lot of times when we're dealing with these disruptive behaviors, it's the anxiety of the student that we have to focus on. That takes us back to what before when Crystal was talking about our mental health specialist. Jamie Westway has been such a vital ad to our department. Yeah, we had uh guidance counselors in the past, but a lot of times they're kind of on their own schedule and they're not immediately available. to have somebody right next door to our office or sitting there in the cafeteria while we're monitoring the lunches. We have a student who's who's really having a meltdown.
I'll try to put it in a percentage that I can. Accounts payable is 100%. That individual was working 100% for the Board of Ed even though it was a town employee.

And then we have a group that's saying, "Hey, technology's too much in the classroom." Our interventionist and support staff, especially at HC Storm, is amazing. My kids every morning love to visit her classroom. They love everything about you and too much. Um I'm going to Same thing, look this way. Um I have a second and fourth grader, and I'm concerned as well about the increased class size of the fourth grade cohort, the unit, whatever you want to call them. Um Everyone knows class size is important, the smaller the better. Having the support staff for those kids, it helps create a foundation for those kids to be the best community members, whether it's middle school, high school, college, after. It all starts at the elementary school, and that is why our elementary school teachers, support staff, interventionists are so important. I mumble when I talk cuz I didn't go to speech.
And the reason we had that just in case anybody in the audience or at home would want to know it's to be in compliant with FOIA or free amendment I'm sorry not FOIA with the open meetings act. Um There's also an update related to the that on page two. They did change most of the time they said email they changed it to electronic means and then they also under number six on page two included that information about the board member alert again there. And a little further down just included some information about the public record that was amended where this is coming from. And then a couple of minor things on page three that really change email to electronic communication. So those are the changes that's the only exhibit that had changes from the last time the board looked at it.
Um the one thing that we we maintain consistency whether a general ed student or special needs student, uh transportation still needs to be provided by uh the parent for not a district transfer. Um inter-district transfer, we have a little bit more, you know, if you're living within the Cal Central, we do have some intra-district transfers between our elementaries. And of course, if they're special needs student and we house programming at one of the four elementaries, we would we would provide that transportation to those for those students to those programs. But as long as we're consistent with how we accept out-of-district transfers, in which we will be, whether they're special needs or a general ed student, we shouldn't have any problems. I was saying that my question is both of the reports, that was one of the things that they really stressed to consider that that sometimes that costs may not balance out.
She keeps going with it. Yeah, I'd like to see Marino keep going into the cage with that. Marino goes around the cage, turns around, finds an open Lucy Parsons. Wow. Nice finish by Lucy Parsons and I do believe that's Kylie Marino's third assist of the game. Nice finish by Lucy Parsons to bury that in the back of the net. Good job by Marino going all around and finding the open player. And just like you said, once they started coming out, everything opened right up. Got a perfect pass right in the middle there. That's it. Good job by Kylie to be patient not not try to force anything into that. Spartans up 9 to 3 with just under 10 minutes left in the fourth and final quarter. Taylor and Whitwer on the draw. Minnechaug really really going to need to win a couple of these draws to make something happen.
I could I could ask for that assistance. I can't focus on dealing with student behavior when they're amped up. It's it's really important for us to get those those the anxiety dealt with before I could have a conversation and get that restorative justice in place. Um, a lot of times the last one they want to see is me or Miss Gillis or Miss Keys and sitting my office that amps up that anxiety to have somebody that I could say, "Okay, I'm going to set you up. I want you to feel better. Go over here. I I could call home. I could go down and check with the teacher and then at some point the student's behavior levels off and I could actually sit down and be productive with what I need to do to help that student grow. It's it's really again going back to holding students accountable and helping them conform to classroom rules.
Any questions regarding that? So 100% accounts payable they were paid by the town. 100% of their job was dedicated to the Board of Education, but they were working on the third floor, and those of you that have been to the Board of Education, the Board of Education was on the bottom. So, 100%. Payroll. That individual, 100% paid by the town, 100% work for the Board of Education. That individual was upstairs on the third floor working for the town, but handled all the payroll for the Board of Ed. Everybody understand that? So, it's 100%. Benefits. The town had a benefits person. Roughly, if you do the math, 92 to 93% of that benefits person was school. We have the largest makeup of the the town. So, 92 to 93% of that individual's responsibility was to the school. The other eight was to the town. So, in conversations, and that individual was paid by the town in the town budget.

My kid has a speech impediment. Thankfully, the support staff there has made him more legible than I am. My daughter loves everything art, and because of the art classes given at HC Storm, she has turned into a better artist than myself. She can't paint a wall, but she can draw a beautiful horse. Um my kids' favorite part of HC Storm is having their small little group sessions with the teacher and the support staff. That's where they feel the most comfortable to be themselves. And as a person who's very emotional 99.9% of the time, having that close-knit community, having those support is so important. It makes you feel better. And it just It feels like we're letting our kids down. And like as a parent, I'm going to have to pick it up. But I'm not going to be with them while they're at HC Storm.
Are there any questions about those? The next one is a policy update. This is from press issue 121. This one this is 2:200 types of board of education meetings. There is a question on here that we need to answer and also on page one they just updated some legal references they've done that on many pages here actually. And then on page three there is a question that we need the board to answer and the question is this does the board post notices and agendas for special meetings at locations where the meeting is to be held in addition to posting at the uh district's main office. And then we answer yes or no. And the answer actually is just that the word is wondering is yes. We do actually post them not only at the administrative center, but we post them at the junior high at the front of the building.
Right, right. So, We'll be very aware of numbers um because one of the one of the reasons we can deny or decline an out-of-district Once you say you're you're an open district and you accept out-of-district transfers, there's very few reasons you can turn down a student. But one of them is you don't have room. So, if a program is at capacity, you can turn down the acceptance of that transfer request. The same that you could for well, fourth grade at Walnut School is at capacity, so I we will not accept any more out-of-district transfers. And it did reference that transportation would be the most expensive. Yes. Finally, that if we're not offering that, and and really I I would wager to say that we we're not really at a point in transportation as many districts aren't uh to be able to increase our capacity for adding routes.
I mean once again, when the clock gets down too much, if the Spartans hold on to a lead, you have to start seeing Minnechaug really really doing a lot of different things defensively schemed. As Lee gets the ball over the restraining line. Lee behind the the cage. Met by Avery Morgado. She'll look to do a She goes around, turns around, finds an open shot and gets And I believe I don't know who that was. Good job by Minichog to turn around roll around the back of the cage and get herself a goal. Who is that? Can't see her number. I I don't I I didn't catch it either. >> Yeah, I think it might have been a Lusic. Can't see her hair. It's over I think it's Or McConnell. Could be cuz I think I think it might be >> number six. I can't see.
Next. So, insubordination is a little different from um from the prior one. Basically, insubordination I think is not just disruptive behavior, but then when the teacher is redirecting the student and the student is just not following those directives, obviously it become could become a big safety issue. um when we have behaviors that aren't handled correctly, the disruptive behaviors, sometimes that adds to the insubordination. A lot of one of the tactics that we all use is especially with younger teachers that or newer teachers I should say that get into the classroom early on and they might not have the same skills. Uh they haven't built those yet. We'll actually either invite ourselves in or ask the teacher to invite us in to a certain class and we could visit the class and go over what the expectations are and then what the consequences may be. encouraging teachers to be consistent in reaching out to us is key.
So, now I've described three positions that were in the town budget. In talking to the CAO, the CAO was able to make some changes, and the CAO said that we could have that position. That was already doing the work, and 92% of the work for the Board of Ed.

You don't want me teaching class. Nobody wants me to do that. I need the community's help to make sure my kids can be the best. I'll do everything outside of the school hours. But when they're with other people, they learn more and they are better. I guess I'm just not that good. Sorry, my wife's not going to watch this, I hope. Um I had other things to say, but she told me not to. I think we have one of the best school districts in the state. And I really think it comes down to the entire community. It starts with the parents, the students, the teachers, the support. I plead with you all to just let's think of the kids and how we can empower them to be better. Thank you. >> [applause] >> Our final speaker is Ashley Hanson. Good evening. My name is Ashley Hanson and I have a daughter at Louise White.
When we've had meetings at other schools, for example, Brier, Gator, Deer Park, we also post those at that school as well. Um so, in terms of what we actually do and we would plan to do, the answer to that would be yes, if that's okay with the board. Yes. Okay. Dr. Thomas, about this one, too. I agree, yes. That was it That was easy while I was reviewing this. Um it doesn't None of the language There's no new language in this, but it's but it's per Right. It's really legal references, and then we have to answer that question yes or no, so that they can update the language to reflect it. Yeah, I was just surprised that there was no language added about just no not being able to hold meetings on any election day, not just the general. It's like every election. >> Yeah, what happens with that is that something that the legislature passes periodically.
Um this should actually help us because several our loaded programs like Bright Horizons and the Joyce House are programs that exist outside our district and require you know, one vehicle to transport one student, but it takes hours to get there and back. So, this will actually, I think, help overall in the transportation department. And if we do leave, we've also um had a conversation with other districts that are not in the co-op that we wanted to look at partnering on a program that maybe we don't feel like we have enough students that we can afford to do it on our own, we might partner with a neighboring district to say, "Hey, we'll cover half, you cover half, and we can meet the needs of these students." So, we have those options out there available to us as well. Do we know who's leaving the co-op and approximately how many students we might be gaining?
