so move second all right i have a motion by mr nunes a second by mr oliver is there any further discussion on that motion all right hearing none all in favor aye all right so i managed to kill the full one minute with that you guys got to be not so quick on the uptake yeah why don't we move on to the student representative report we have nanyan bila who is uh here to give us an update so why don't you um i'm not to put you on the spot but maybe you could introduce yourself first before you give us your report and tell us a little bit about yourself since it's your first time here thank you dr jenkins hi everyone i am 9 bala i'm a junior here at dhs and i'm really excited to be your student representative for the third trimester a little bit about me i am on the robotics team i'm on the math team i'm a member of the science club and i really love anything stem kind of math and science and i hope to pursue that in the future so to start off this report ever since embarking on quarter three it has been a really busy but really successful time here at dhs spring athletics kicked off today with 10 programs having their first practice and their tryouts this afternoon all sports have been off to an exemplary start over the weekend we crowned dartmouth's finest which for the first time was awarded to a female contestant mia carter this show was truly so much fun to watch and we would like to congratulate all of our talented contestants and thank all of the faculty members who made dartmouth's finest possible especially mrs kearney and mrs grieve who are the amazing class of 2023 advisors the dhs theater company performed crafting a killer this weekend at the 2022 massachusetts educational theater guild festival the show was directed by gabriella riordan and gracie rose and several members of the dartmouth high theatre company received awards for their immense talent and hard work the dhs debate team also competed this weekend in state debate tournament at needham high school dhs competed in group discussion which focused on space exploration with sub-topics including militarization colonization and privatization senior dhs debater colin zoo came in second place overall in the competitive field of 42 students from across the state the dhs music program hosted a very successful home show on saturday our indoor percussion winds and color guard all had outstanding performances as they continue to prepare for the world competitions held in ohio during april vacation the dhs math team recently competed in their regional playoff meet and are currently ranked second in their conference of 16 southeast schools after recently coming first in their playoff meet they'll be competing in the state competition in two weeks lastly our grade 10 students will be taking the first of their ncas exams starting tomorrow all students completed an infrastructure test last week to iron out any bugs and get some more practice in for the actual exam our sophomores are ready to go and we wish them the best of luck thank you thank you so much i appreciate that any comments or questions mr nunes yeah just there was a there was a math event here last week how did we do we did awesome so um it it went really successful successfully fiend and all rochester were here and some other i happened to walk by so yeah many schools in the area were here including like taunton which is currently ranked first i think orr for haven were were able to visit and so it was basically like a giant kind of um playoff meet for our regional um what's the word i'm looking for kind of a contest so basically all these schools came together and we competed in these five rounds that we did and it went really well our school won the competition um competing against these nine other schools so it went really successfully i was cured i was curious how it went yeah i stopped in for a couple of minutes and that and you know it was talking with mr lauer about the you know the content and everything else and i was way out so but it was so much fun yeah congratulations thank you thank you thank you any other questions or comments no i'd just like to say great presentation welcome aboard we're happy to have you we had a nice conversation uh before the meeting started so yeah welcome aboard thank you i'm really excited to be here thank you and you know we'll always say to our student reps you are more than welcome to stay but we also know that you are very busy so you're also more than welcome to leave it's completely up to you and it depends on what you have going on in your schedule and what homework you have i would totally say but i have a ton of homework but thank you guys so much thank you so much good luck all right so it is now 6 37 so we can open our public hearing on the proposed fiscal year 23 school budget at this point in time if anyone would like to make any comments on the fiscal year 23 school budget please step up to the podium and state your name and remember that at this point we're just taking comments about the budget we'll do comments about other agenda items after this thank you go ahead [Laughter] please don't state your name for the record that's okay i'm christian silvera i used to be a student here at dhs i try to be as involved as possible while juggling my own life i did just want to speak briefly after speaking to mr kylie in regards to the proposed budget he made it known to me that the removal or reduction of the parking pass fee is included in the proposed budget so i just want to speak on this and maybe mention the three more um three biggest things that stood out to me the most in the conversations i've had with you all just to kind of reiterate them and i know some members were kind of on the fence about it all so um first things first i drove through the parking lot the other day and there was an immense amount of damage in that law from plows damage that's actually been there for years now and hasn't even been resolved but the thing is the majority of that damage was in the teacher lot but yet the students contributed twelve thousand dollars of the fifteen thousand dollars of expenses in that lot last year if you went to the plow company and you ask them to cut out the student law it really wouldn't change the amount that you're paying them all that much so that's that's number one number two is it's been brought up before that driving to school is a luxury for students and quite honestly i think it's more of a luxury for the school the school saves thousands of dollars a year actually allowing for the students to park here because it's it's money saved through tremblies and it's time saved i know dr jenkins dr jenkins you had brought up before that you know that extra half an hour of sleep 45 minutes of sleep when kids don't have to board a bus at 6 15 can be huge it can be huge for teachers in a classroom when they're trying to get students attention it can be huge for students mental health when they need that extra little bit of sleep a day just to help get through it the third thing is that this is just a simple maintenance need this is not comparable to many of the other fees sports band they're amazing things but those are actually luxuries those are things that the school specifically has put into place for the students they have to pay stipends to pay it to run those programs and that's where the the fees from those programs go towards the maintenance fees the the parking best fees they're just paying the maintenance of the entire law when the students occupy it not even a third of it so no other infrastructure in this town has parking pass fees the police department doesn't pay him teachers don't pay him you know the beach is the town hall like no one else is paying parking pass fees at this point this is not an issue of funding or not this is something i've been fighting for five years now and this is something that's been being fought since the day it was put into place it's not an issue of funding but it's an issue of right and wrong this is a general maintenance requirement that needs to be treated that way i understand that funds are lower this year than usual and the thing is is every single year i've fought this is always a reason why it shouldn't happen why it shouldn't happen but honestly at this time no more dispersing funds from students pockets to pay for lighting in the lots no more dispersing funds from students pockets to pay for areas in the parking lot that they're not even inhabiting and no more disbursing funds from students pockets to clearly pay for maintenance that should just be covered out of a general maintenance requirement there are no um i'm sorry discharge at this point it just seems predatory when you look at it in the grand scheme of things and buy each line item so i appreciate you all for listening to me all these years giving me the opportunity to come up here and speak hopefully this is the last time i'm here to speak but i want to work with you on the future on different you know issues i want to help you come up with the solutions maybe someday i can be sitting on this panel with you all but i appreciate you all taking the time to even consider what i have to say so thank you thank you other comments on the proposed fiscal year 23 school budget good evening my name is rene vieira i am this year co-president of the dartmouth educators association and i stand here with my co-president jody parisi so we have a few questions about the budget and a couple of comments um so our first uh question is in regards to the change in the director of teacher and learning in your budget proposal that position has been split from one direct position to an elementary and a secondary level and i did notice we did notice in the budget that there's also the school committee is maintaining a line item for the associate or the assistant principal uh superintendent position um however there is no monetary value there but but that place is being held um so our first question is uh that we recognize that because of the retirement of ms roy and the change in the job responsibilities of ms oliveira that there in the last year and a half or so there have been many stipended positions created and our question is do we have an understanding of which of those positions will now be eliminated at the end of this year and those responsibilities and returning back to those administrative positions examples are the project time coordinator the ell coordinator and relative to elementary whether there's still going to be a need for curriculum leaders if we now have an elementary director right now um our estimate is that there's over over 20 000 worth of stipended money going out um to pay for these what were once administrative responsibilities our second question regarding that is that in the budget there's a line that recognizes that the assistant superintendent secretary is going to be shuffled um due to the change in position it's now going to be a curriculum secretary of position so um i guess we just want to make sure that that is going to be accurately reflected in in the instructional piece because now that position is going to become a dea position so you know just to make sure that that gets reflected as such when you think about cost changes for dea salaries moving on a third question we have is relative to the ester monies so one of the questions we had is one is sr money funding the accelerated academy because the accelerated academy we recognize was new to this school year and there's been quite a bit of money spent on stipends and to run the program but it seems at this point that the impact on student involvement is less than expected so we were wondering if that was something that was going to be continued in the budget for next year or if that was directly linked to s or money another question that we had we noticed in the proposed budget there was a recommendation for forty nine thousand one hundred ninety three dollars for one fte rbt position this seems significantly higher than the salary of current rbt positions so we were wondering if that was an error and that that was for two positions or if it was to cover existing stipends or money for people who are already employed and if so who would then fulfill the duties and responsibilities of these people being pulled from their current positions to provide these services if we were going to be hiring additional people also there is a cushman special education teacher who's retiring at top step we were wondering if the school committee would consider hiring two sped teachers so that one would be able to support the preschool teachers as only two are currently holding a special education license and that this would solve some of the some of the you know issues that we have surrounding the um the model that we're using in dartmouth at this point in time um one other thing that has to do with cushman that we were noticing in the um in the line items is that we were wondering if the assistant principal cushman assistant principal it wasn't listed in the proposed budget so we were wondering if there was a title change or if it was like an oversight because we did see a listing for early childhood director but that only reflects like half of the salary so it wasn't listed in there that we could find anywhere and we just may have missed it but or we were wondering if the title had changed one other thing that we were um have been wondering about or concerned about is that there seems to be an increase in sped money spent like at the administrative level or in supportive administration previously we had a director of people support services and then over the last few years we added an assistant at that an assistant for that position other than the purchase of the sunday system which i know was very expensive it was a system that was for dyslexic students it was required by the state and we we purchased that prior to that there was over the years there was a significant loss in money that was for the sped budget and you know people are are requesting supplies and they're not able to get them you know one example is there's been a request that has not been purchased for essential tools like boardmaker for some of our program students and that's an essential piece that is needed and as far as i know up to this point they've still not received that so we were just wondering i did notice that in the in the budget this bed budget has is is retaining the money that was allotted for this year for the sande system where in previous years this bed budget had been like significantly cut so just wondering if some of those supplies then would then be purchased as people are asking for them thank you um so recognizing that there's been back and forth from deci relative to how essa monies can be spent um it has now been stated publicly that essa monies can be used for staffing purposes to apply to be able to directly allow for services for students so one of our questions was how much of the total budget that you have in front of you does include esser monies and of those essay monies do we know how much of the estimate is actually included under instruction and we asked that because uh we recognized that under budget request items that were not met um one of them was um there were two not funded positions for uh teaching assistant positions and um we continue to struggle um to meet the needs of some of our students and you know in the district without being able to offer teaching assistance services and having you know two staff members uh to be able to to meet the needs of students in certain classrooms and also there continues to be inequity across the district relative to um at different buildings having different amounts of teaching assistant support which then can really greatly either enhance or cause difficulty to be able to meet the needs of students and run certain programs so that it's equitable across the across the district and a couple of concerns we had relative to some percent increases in the budget we recognize that dartmouth has continued to increase not only some administrative positions but positions that don't necessarily relate to direct services to students these positions they will sometimes you know support other staff sometimes they support administrators but right now we're looking at in looking at this budget um there's it's recognized that for building administrative salaries there's a 14.6 increase versus only a 5.5 increase for staff and we also know that there are um some building administrative contracts that have years fours at years four and five added to their contract in which their percent increases have not yet been established or if they have they're not necessarily public yet so we we're questioning as to whether um if the superintendent has made a decision for years four and five for some of these administrators and how that might impact the budget and lastly to quote school committee member mr nunes at the last school committee meeting one of our ongoing concerns is that we're not marketable with the rest of um with a number of neighboring areas and mr noon said in recognition of an administrative salary or in considering administrative salaries that if you pay peanuts you get monkeys well right now our dartmouth is having an extremely hard time filling and keeping our tas we can't fill the positions and we get ta positions and they um many times leave they either leave to try to move to another building because there's a difference in the job description or in the expectation and many times they're they're leaving for other districts we're also struggling here to fill substitute positions and we do appreciate the fact that the school committee did increase the substitute pay and that's helped us some but i know across the buildings when staff is out it's an awful lot of work to get folks to be able to cover and um we do commend staff for stepping up and and being willing to um to fill in classes here and there to give up prep periods etc but we also know that we have specialized service positions that we struggle to fill and that causes us as a district to spend lots of money on contracted services because we can't fill those positions permanently and it also makes it hard too because in a sort of a revolving door dr give it tries to post them they can't get filled we get you know an outside contract in the meantime we still try to run the postings and and it doesn't um in some cases it just it it's a concern with keeping services consistent across the board and last but not least okay we're always waving this flag and we appreciate your time this evening add to this the cost of our health insurance and we're not offering competitive wages all right we get people across the district and also within the town this is not just a dartmouth public schools issue but we get really good people candidates that apply for positions and the position is great and then they look at the the salary package along with the the health care costs and there are a number of people who've had to decline because they're going to take a cut and pay when we take a look at the town's limited support of our our health insurance package and we do appreciate your time that's what we have for you this evening and we thank you thank you all right any further comments on the proposed fiscal year 23 school budget all right seeing no takers we can now close the motion we close the public hearing on this fy 23 school budget thank you mr nunes i have a motion by mr nunes in a second by mr oliver is there any discussion hearing none all in favor aye aye opposed that motion carries unanimously um thank you everyone um next we will we have a lot of 10 minutes for public comment on other items on our agenda but anyone would like to speak on any of the other items on our agenda we invite you now to come up to the podium share your name and share your thoughts all right seeing no takers we'll move on to the next item on our agenda which is a presentation our spotlight on kids for dartmouth high school dr gifford would you like to introduce thank you madam chair i know we have principal mr tebow here and i think associate principal ms chavier and i'm not sure who else they're going to bring up a number of other folks who are going to join all right as well so welcome mr mr bosworth and members of the e-sports team at dartmouth high school so if i remember correctly ben you'll help me out i think it was control right arrow is that right all right thank you thanks ben all right well first off thank you to the committee it's um my pleasure to be able to represent dartmouth high school for the spotlight on kids um certainly been a little bit uh i feel like since we've been here with covert and everything else but it's a pleasure to be back as principal it is always hard for me to pick um you know you heard from nyan earlier today a lot of what she talked about was just this weekend um so that's one week and so the point there being that we have a lot of clubs and activities athletic programs there's a lot going on at dartmouth high school that deserves a spotlight and so to just pick one group is very always very difficult for me but this year um i decided to pick the esports team here at dartmouth high school and um real quick i'm going to give a little a few introductory slides and i'm going to turn it over to to the folks behind me but actually before i do get into this if we could just kind of go around and introduce ourselves if you could just state your name and your year of graduation mr tebow i'm gonna have them come to them to come up and step up to the microphone or mr peratti will scold both of us and we don't want to get in trouble with him hi my name is orlando o'reilly and the year of graduation is 2024. thanks orlando lucas hello my name is lucas waite i am a sophomore graduating 2024.

kyle hello i'm kyle silva i'm a junior and graduate the year of 2023. hi i'm jennica brawl i'm a junior and graduate 2023 thanks gia adriana hello my name is adriana neria i am a freshman here at dhs all right thank you so esports for folks who might not be familiar esports is competitive gaming and it is the fastest growing sport in the united states currently and um you know the the growth of esports is really reflected by the fact that the msaa which is the sister organization to the miaa has really taken the lead in governing competition amongst high schools and in any given season any given league you have anywhere from you know 45 to 60 different high schools or different high school teams i should say competing in esports also there's 150 colleges more than 150 colleges and universities that actually have varsity level esports teams now including you know i looked at the list uh in preparation for this and you know certainly there's a lot of small colleges and universities that have varsity level programs but there's a lot of universities as well that you you know it's much madness right now you see them competing march madness they also have esports teams like ohio state oklahoma oklahoma state new mexico state so there's a lot of you know big name colleges that also offer varsity esports program so it is a fast growing sport if you will so why play esports because i think this is important because i think sometimes video games get a bad rap right but i think that esports offers competition at the highest level for for gaming um you know there's a number of different games that our young people compete in uh specifically here at dartmouth high school it's rocket league league of legends and smash ultimate but beyond that it really does align the you know it's a this is a co-curricular activity that aligns with the teaching and learning that takes place during the day we talk a lot about the four c's of of 21st century learning specifically thinking about critical thinking you know communication collaboration um you know critical thinking all of those skills are employed in strategic uh ways to be successful in the games that that our esports team competes in also it's they compete as a team right so you have character development you have um you know there's there's a lot of research that shows that students who are connected to school beyond the traditional school day do better academically right and so it offers that benefit and again as i mentioned already the college scholarships i'm not sure what the most recent number is but four years ago um 16 million dollars was awarded nationally in terms of scholarships for esports um so that's obviously a tiny fraction when you you know recognize that billions of dollars are given out in scholarships for athletics but it's not an insignificant amount and it's growing every year so i just think having an esports team here at dartmouth high school is a tremendous opportunity and provides one more opportunity for our young people to get plugged in and so i thought we'd watch this brief video it's two minutes long of kind of an esports action and then we'll turn it over to our young people to kind of share in much more detail their experience as part of the esports team [Music] we ready let's go all right guys same team comp as yesterday matt i want to see you play more aggressive yep and we're running at carrie top again got it we got this zach are you good to support again yeah of course support is so easy dude i need support at the bottom i got only five [Music] on my way guys i'm coming in i can won't be one this jax i'll come help push mid i want to die by 20 seconds can you guys back me up that's what i'm talking about guys good stuff [Music] oh man that was so fun i wish we had this in school [Music] so [Music] so the last piece there i wish we had this in school i just want to um you know uh thank mr bosworth and mr guillot because they really took the lead two years ago our esports team was actually one of um i think six new clubs or activities that we created during that pandemic year the year when you know the pandemic was really raging um you know i think it speaks to the fact that we do have outstanding uh teachers and faculty members here at dartmouth high school who are willing to step up and provide opportunities for our students and in speaking um with giada today she actually spoke to me a lot about what is meant to her so giotta if you want to come up and kind of share that with the committee um so the esports community is really problematic not like among the club but as like a publicly whole community it's really discriminatory against not just sex but um like race stuff like that um and as a female um speaking in like just a game chat can like result in like lash back and stuff like that and so i think that the club here is super important because it creates this huge safe space for people um a lot of people don't have the opportunity to play at home and so creating this space at school is super great too because it gives kids the opportunity to make friends um and again creates that space safe space and it's super great because you make friends and i sound like a broken record my gosh um you make friends and um it just makes it better for people who tend to shy away from the community because of what they've heard from other people about different types of backlash and stuff like that so i really think mr giat and mr bosworth for creating this because um as we grow um we get to open new doors for more people and it's really great thanks jim thank you thanks giada all right so i don't know who wants to step up and just speak about the experience here in terms of creating the club and kind of providing a little synopsis so the club is the club itself is fairly new it was only started last year the 2020-21 year and it was sort of experimentation it began with just a sort of uh heavily casual locally school hosted uh smash brothers tournament but just for a few members of the club as again a trial run then we got into the uh play vs league and that's when we started getting into the seasons of competition the spring and fall seasons opening up opportunities for students to play different games like the aforementioned rocket league league of legends super smash brothers um and opening and opening up new games like apex legends valorant overwatch it sort of brought this wide demographic i guess of players into the club and kind of took the whole thing off so many people showed so much more interest there was a lot more people coming into pace thinking of ideas for the club like this symbol which actually lucas created with some help of mr bosworth um and even just building up the room we have right now which i believe is going to be presented later on um it's just it's been amazing to see it grow from three four five people to now a school renowned club of 20 maybe maybe more and we even have a discord server which is growing and growing and growing bringing more and more members into this community even uh graduates and alumni of dartmouth high uh i believe mr bosworth and mr guillot have stated they've made their own server for those so they can still be active and see the club blossom and flower more uh even going out of high school and it's it's just wonderful to see it's amazing that i get to be part of that growth so it was anyone here part of this so in their first season uh last spring they qualified for the state tournament um and did quite well as anyone want to speak lucas you want to share your experience with that [Music] okay um i'm not sure what to say um well last year like kyle said was very experimentational it was our first time around we made a lot of mistakes but as a team we like grew we became more strong and we worked together to overcome our opponents i would say you want to say anything yeah overall this community has really become like a family to me and i really want to see this community grow and blossom into something beautiful and i think that people should be really supportive of that and do everything they can to help that happen i would also like to say that um it feels like as every season goes by we're only becoming stronger and stronger with the more experience that we're gaining and it's a great experience and i feel like i'm connecting with a lot of new people i just want to say something real quick uh they missed on a big part of last season which was that their team made it to the state semifinals and i'll just say growing up i played baseball in high school and in college but i also grew up playing video games um so i i know what it takes to be a part of a team i know like the the communication the strategy um and you know having played in college but also playing video games you can see there is a massive gap between you know casual players good players and now there's a huge pro scene and we have some really talented kids here at the school and it's kind of cool to see them grow they again made it to the state semifinals last year and they're off to a hot start this spring so um i think that's one of the the coolest parts is you know we're playing teams like they just beat a team from uh old colony all right so we're starting to see these local teams pop up westport bishop staying but there's really schools from all over the state um and i think they're doing a good job of representing dartmouth so far thanks so the the qr codes will take you if you want to see the current standings i think one of our teams is in second place out of 42 currently and another team is fifth out of i'm not sure how many so they are doing very well for sure um so they wanted to we wanted to be able to talk a little bit about the future of esports here at dartmouth high school because they have taken ownership of this program um and they do have a vision for where they'd like to see it go so i don't know if any um here down at dartmouth high we have a room downstairs on the a floor that we're starting to sort of create a like giada said earlier a safe space for students to join this club although it is only some old computers that don't really run well and all this newish stuff that's coming into the club we are very grateful of any donations and all donations i think the club has started as you can see club raised money for the club we have a bunch of club funds with homemade masks that they sold the room we're trying to envision is something for students to come in from anywhere it also allow students to come in and be more included and i think or i believe and many members of the team believe that um more like make it more children friendly gaming friendly community friendly like giada said there is a lot of discrimination against many people and we just want this room this whole club even to be a huge place for everyone to come in i myself have been working on with my family donations for the school with school approval of course we are building computers for this school and um this will just allow people if it's okay with mr bosworth to have kids come down during pace coming after school to play on these computers um they we can run many games we can play with each other again this club is just we want to be able to have people create more friends be just a blooming club just for people because i know there's people who probably graduate like we said alumni come by but it's great to see this community grow i'm a freshman so i just started this club or just joined this club and i am very proud to see how many people i've met and it's a very good community um i am excited for these pcs excited for the club to bloom excited to see for next season um that's pretty much all i have to say i am so grateful for this um thank you so much i just wanted to say that um hopefully when we upgrade the room it's going to bring in a lot more kids a lot of people don't have the opportunity to play at home whether they don't have the money to have their own setup or they just don't have the opportunity because some parents just aren't really super into allowing their kids to having it at home and we really want to open up those doors to the kids that really do want to have the opportunity to do it and they just don't yet thank you hi mr bosworth i do want to point out a couple of things one is that we do have many members of the club the original members of the club were all students who competed at some level in playing the games and they competed against other schools but this year we've got an influx of students like giada who uh jenna doesn't isn't competing this year but she's still a very active club member and so there's opportunities for for leadership um she helped create a bulletin board she helped create posters for a tournament we wanted to have uh the student the students who made the masks were you know non-competing members um so it's really nice to see you don't necessarily have to want to compete to be part of the club there's still a space for everybody some kids are intimidated they're like they know they're casual gamers and they're not quite ready to step it up there we're working on them we're going to get them there oh the other thing i i need to mention sorry you can come up with me sure i'm sorry no no it's okay i was done um one of the things mr ghia and i have talked about is um you were a student athlete right your whole life i was a student athlete at one point all my coaches told me student comes first athlete comes second right [Music] and so as teachers we are checking in with our students making sure their grades are up to par we have allowed some students to come in during pace and the room is there if they want to you know two students want to practice or strategize or do some club things if they have taken care of all their school work we're fine with that it's a great use of of pace time to further those connections so again just another uh positive outcome of this whole thing thank you thank you thank you all right finally i just want to thank um the school committee for the opportunity to highlight these great young people i also again want to stress uh how appreciative we are of mr gia and mr bosworth um you know i don't think uh the the public always recognizes the fact that um you know in order to be a to become a stipended position as a club activities advisor you have to volunteer for three years first so this truly is a labor of love for mr ghia and mr bosworth and and giving of their their time to you know um support these young people and provide them that opportunity to get plugged into dartmouth high school so we really thank mr mr bosworth for that and then finally just wanted to thank the dartmouth education foundation who supported the club earlier this year through a grant award and with that being said and i think we're happy to answer any questions that the committee might have thank you mr tebow um mr oliver you want to start sure thank you dr jenkins thank you mr tebo and all the students and uh the teachers that presented i'm i'm blown away you know i i had heard that there was an esports program but i did not realize uh to what magnitude and the fact that all of you folks and the you know folks last year that have been competing in statewide tournaments i think it's great and you know one of the things that i think is really important to to mention is that a number a few of the students spoke about how it's a safe space for people to go down there and you know i'll all join in on this gaming i think that's great i would love to see the program continue to grow i'm sure mr galesha wherever he is we need to work on getting them some uh some better technology and uh making sure that happens uh but no you know i i think this is really cool this is something that you know when i was in high school i certainly would have been interested in so and it sounds like all of you have a great time looking forward to it so no thank you to the teachers as well as thank you to all the students for presenting this evening well job well done give us to oliver mr nunes yeah thank you madam chair uh i'm going to be the first one to admit i know nothing about this at all i will be perfectly frank and how you would score something of this who's a winner i have no idea it's something that with alder is you guys are and ladies and staff are into it's fantastic it's giving you a purpose and i'm all for it enjoy sir you know thank you miss waite well i have a tutor along the way to help me so thank you lucas to uh i really appreciate you know what this uh esports is bringing to uh to my family as well as this you know great group of kids so i have to say like it's it's you know just a testament i think that we do such a great job here at dartmouth high of really creating a space for every student you know you can come in and you can find your niche and to see that expand you know in this vein as well you know and again i you know touched on and i know i've talked with mr bosworth as well about you know how this is really a great welcoming space and how you know and as they alluded to you know a lot of kids come just to find that social outlet it's not just about playing games it's about finding your people and finding your people in high school i mean that that's a task so you know when you can do that and i think we you know we have so many settings and i have to give you your leadership you know and and the teachers so much credit for that because you know we keep expanding those settings from the band you know into our guard you just you know so many different places that i i think it's really exciting for these freshmen to come in and be like wow they have an esport you know again in this you know just to find these niches and again and these kids are on you know their own tennis they're doing a lot of other things as well you know and and band and everything else so it's it's just a you know it's it's great to see it i'm happy to see the excitement so keep it up guys i think you're doing a great job so and again thank you to mr bosworth thank you and i would just i just want to echo what you just said because when there's not a club i believe there is something for everyone here and when there's not we encourage our students to create one which is why we saw six or seven new clubs started last year when you know miss um mr chave used to oversee clubs and activision this year with mr shea really taking the lead on that they deserve a lot of credit for that as well but you know we just had our incoming ninth graders visit last week and that was part of the introduct you know introductory message we give them and then i know it will be echoed in the new student orientation over the summer and then they'll hear it again in the fall when they walk through because i do think it's it's very important that every student has an opportunity to plug in in some way here at dartmouth high school thanks everyone i mean yeah i'll just i go what my colleagues have said i think this is great you know i have two gamers at home not movie competition level gamers but um you know so i understand the draw of this for for today's kids and also just really how it's grown as a sport um but also as a pastime like sometimes i'll come into my kids and i'll be saying wait you're watching someone else play a video game like i don't understand that right so um maybe us old people don't understand it maybe i'm with mr nunes not quite understanding some aspects of this um but i do know how great and engaging it is for the kids so i'm super appreciative that we've created this space um for kids to to find their place um and uh you know to have fun so it's great thank you so much thank you thank you that's up to them may i yes so relevant to that we we did experiment last year we had a twitch channel where we were streaming some of our matches um we've got a couple of students who are really eager to get back there um we almost forgot to thank mr peratti who again is behind the scenes making sure everything runs smooth he's been supporting our club too in a lot of little ways he's he got some new tvs for his program so he just came in and gave us his old ones hey can you guys use these yes he's always got the right cords and things um but he's also helping us do some video production and maybe edit some things and we're attempting to get a youtube channel so i would have been remiss if i didn't mention it thank you thank you very much all right thank you everyone we appreciate it so much have a good night all right so um the next item on our agenda under old business is the fiscal year 23 budget and i know um we had a number of public comments with some questions um unfortunately mr kiley is unable to be with us this evening because he's not well however because of public advertising and public notice and our sort of deadlines we had to move forward with the with the public comment period or the public hearing for the budget but we likely will not be able to answer any of those questions this evening mr kiley has been watching and i believe he will speak to people or be prepared to answer questions at our next meeting but we don't really have any sort of discussion about the fiscal year budget 23 budget unless my colleagues have a question or comment at this point in time this wrong this may be something that dr gifford may be able to answer was the questions around will the new curriculum positions be include the some of the stipends such as project time and the will that be absorbed by the those positions project time and some of the other stipends that we're currently paying our plan right now is to just keep the l coordinator and the project time coordinators the two teachers that you saw present and help run the meetings and the l coordinator the other ones the curriculum leaders at the elementary level no we won't have a need for that okay other questions or comments from my and like dr jenkins said um mr kylie and i will prepare answers to these questions so we have a nice thorough answer for next time that'd be great and i i think for my help um you know i see i have the esser uh grants up in front of me uh for fy22 then fy 23 and 24.

um i i'd be curious to see like the offsets in the actual budget of where these fall um you know sr3 um which is good which is for fy 23 and 24 we're at 2.9 approximately 2.9 million um so i would just be uh curious to see is is that maxing out our esser budget do we have anything left we'll have all of that for you i know we sent you a general um and that's all i think to be clear along that line about us that's all supplemental to the budget right it's all supplemental that was one of the questions and so we can we can clarify that one right now and i i could also um clarify the rbt position that actually includes training for um in-house staff as well that's not a salary for one person that 49 000 so we were um training as well as three in-house folks that have applied or volunteered to be trained uh our existing tas that um we started this program service a while ago exactly so that clarifies that but we can have more information at the next meeting yes uh mr newsome has waited anything else okay no i think i just had the same you know look at that clarifications back i know mr kylie's watching yeah he'll be he'll be ready to go he'll be ready to go i've got to sit down with him i've got some questions but i've got to sit down yeah okay questions okay all right so next i want to talk about the next item on our agenda which is a discussion of the equality and diversity subcommittee so i want to sort of give the committee a heads up about where we are and then talk about how to proceed next one um i went back and forth and back and forth and back and forth with uh miss gemtler and dr gifford and they're probably ready to kill me but we're trying to figure out how to post the meeting to make sure that we could hold the meeting tomorrow right we all agreed that the worst outcome would be that we post the meeting incorrectly and therefore we are unable to continue with the meeting tomorrow so the concern was if we posted it as a joint meeting and this evening if the committee decided not to continue with the current members of the quality and diversity subcommittee that we wouldn't be able to hold that meeting because it was posted as a joint meeting we reached out to the attorney general's office we didn't get any information from them about you know how to post it properly so the meeting for tomorrow is posted as a meeting of the school committee okay solely all right so with that in mind ms amarill cannot be here this evening so i want to know if you would prefer to proceed with this discussion this evening or do we want to wait until miss amarill is available to participate we can go either way but i just wanted to talk with the community because it's somewhat moot about tomorrow night the diversity inequality subcommittee meeting is not meeting tomorrow those members are welcome to attend it's open to the public so they're welcome to attend like everyone else but the question of what to do about that committee is not pressing that we need to deal with it before tomorrow evening meeting so with that in mind we could wait or we could have that discussion right now and so i would like to put that before the committee first before we engage in anything thoughts on that mr nunes yeah thank you madam chair um i i think you know to uh to be fair to miss amaral i think that's one of those you're right it's not pressing and if we wait until we have a full committee and you know we bring it up at that point in time i'm good with i'm good with that is you know no need to jump into something you know because that you know no disrespect who knows who votes how but now you have corner you've got an odd number so if better to err on a side of caution and just wait for a full committee that would be you know my my take on it mr oliver thank you dr jenkins yeah i'm fine with waiting um with the extent to have a general discussion my only thought would be um are are we looking to i personally would like to see us reopen this up to you know not just the standing members that were in place for any new members so you know i don't know if we want to put that out there now that or is that something we need to vote on but just might i'm fine waiting i'd just like to see us at some point whether tonight's the night we wait till mrs amaral is back to to say you know please submit letters of interest so i guess my question back to you in response to that is do we want to keep the structure of the committee the same or do we want to change it right to call for volunteers it feels like we have to know whether or not where how many slots we have and what we're doing whether we're keeping the structure the same etc etc so my sense is i agree with mr nunes that maybe i don't know maybe you think we should have that discussion but i feel like we should punt it all until we're all here and we can have all of those questions together and if we do that on the fourth we can make that determination also make the determination if we want to appoint new members and then proceed with the call if that's a decision but that's just my sense miss waite yeah i think that that is a good call i think it's you know kathleen certainly also brings in expertise around special education so it's good to have her viewpoints on that as well and you know like i said an odd number i think we have to consider as a group are we going to go forth with the same charge too and i know i kind of dug up and shared that original charge that we agreed on so yeah we need to look at that and then i you know i guess i did have a question too and i do want to ask about the format you know this past time again when we're dealing with covid you know is it possible for us because to do working groups you know as well as so those are some of the questions i have just in terms because if i look at the charge there's a lot of real work that needs to be done and it's difficult to do some of that work in a you know 10 12 person committee so it may be helpful in some cases to have some working groups that then bring back some conclusions so again those are all questions i just don't know i'm just going to sort of laugh because i'm looking at my watch and in about three weeks i am no longer chair of the school committee so i'm just going to say that the diversity and equality subcommittee is a subcommittee of the school committee therefore it is subject to open meeting laws so if there are working groups of that subcommittee and there are more than two people on those working groups those working groups are subject to open meeting law that will be hashtag not my problem in three weeks but i just want to know that that all of this must be done in a fully open and transparent way because it is we are subject to women so working groups are somewhat difficult because we are limited to just two people and then you lose the idea of having a variety of viewpoints there we can discuss that and that's something maybe the subcommittee may decide whatever form it's in but it gets really complicated really fast and dr grifford i have a question too you know as i look at because again a lot of the charge and we can revisit this so i'm not you know having a full discussion now but we have this but it does seem as though it would be important for our curriculum folks at least to be you know on serving in some capacity these new curriculum folks because a lot of what we're talking about here is curriculum and practices and so you know that's a that's a question too those people haven't been hired they don't have the opportunity yet to you know put a letter in but again as we kind of consider for it i would imagine if they're talking about curriculum systematically and they're going to bring it back to the teachers that they would be important folks you know just by virtue of their position so unless we're talking about something separate coming from your office but i mean any curricula model units changes as you know over the last years and years it takes to develop desi puts out new standards etc etc so it is a huge huge project mr nixon yeah thank you i was just going you was going to kind of echo what the superintendent just said that if you're going to get into curriculum then somewhere down the line you're going to need some feedback right from those two new you know the people that are in that position only because it's not that subcommittee's position it's it's not our position right right we don't we don't as a school committee we don't dictate curriculum right and well i was going with the state i was going with this you know going back to what's in that subcommittee charge and that's where i'm yeah a little we're kind of getting into a a real gray stepping on toes areas plain and simple okay so we may have to look at that charge there's we're going to look at the charge with mary sent around so we can all look at that prior to the the next meeting the structure of the committee which right now we have two administrators three staff a couple of students two school committee members two students and two community members yeah so we should think about that about what the structure of that will be and then i think once we have those two things in place then we can have the get to that third issue which is do we reappoint or do we do another call right does that make sense so we'll do all that we'll put that on our agenda for our next meeting yep that's fine okay thanks all right so moving on to new business uh superintendents updates hey i don't have too much to this uh this week but i did want to mention that the middle school has started a unified some unified athletics programs as as the high school so i know they have a basketball game coming up this friday so it'll be fun to see how that evolves i do want to mention again about the high school what mr tebow said about um so many teachers come forth asking to start these clubs and whatnot and the work that's involved before they it's just you saw the middle school legos and elect the engineering and all of that last time and it was the same kind of thing a number of years ago so it's just great um we did interview for the excuse me we did uh post for the director positions and we've got a team of folks that will be interviewing next week for those positions and also i think you i might have mentioned at another meeting that our registrar in central office had resigned she gave her two weeks notice two weeks ago and we immediately posted that position so we have uh a number of candidates we'll be interviewing starting tomorrow for for that we wanted to fill it as fast as possible it's a really tough time we were in the same position last year right at this time so it's it's tough and then just we got this um so i brought this along i sent it to the the principals at the schools it was from one of our juniors hannah lima here at the high school and she's missed new bedford's outstanding teen of 2022.

so she sent a letter asking that she we we share her project that she's going to be doing and it's about an act of kindness official day of kindness mayor mitchell has taken it on in new bedford as well so we sent it off to the um the schools and asked that on april 1 that on that official day of kindness that each school takes on some kind of a project which i know we always talk about like a cushman and pot all the schools now do the kindness challenges etc so this will just be an added incentive for them to uh do something special so if i could just like i noticed that the uh the middle school is actually doing a clothing run yes report but we do have one other item other matter that may not have been anticipated the time of the agenda posting and that as you all received it's normally under our consent agenda for deca we had four students qualify for nationals um and so we are seeking approval of the uh the trip for those students to uh i believe it is georgia atlanta georgia yes i will entertain a motion to approve with pleasure yes i'm biased though but yes second all right so i have a motion by mr nunes and a second by mr oliver is there any further discussion on the uh uh the motion good luck and yeah bring us back some trophies all right hearing no further discussion all in favor aye aye aye opposed right that motion carries unanimously um are there any other items that the committee would like to share i always look to mr nunes he has something but he's taking notes so i'll go to mr oliver next no thank you madam chair i know the committee i believe the committee had received a letter from the uh chappaquiddick tribe that asked to be placed into record it was sent in after uh last week's uh two weeks ago forum so if it was okay with you madam chair i'd just like to read it into the record thank you so attention superintendent uh miss bonnie gifford and secretary ms kathleen genther uh greetings to all into whom it may concern leave the chappaquiddick tribe of the poconocon nation stand in unified support with our brothers and sisters of the poconoco federation affiliated tribes the chappaquiddick tribe feels that the dartmouth mascot in question should remain while we recognize the controversy that surrounds this issue we the chappaquiddick peoples in no way feel that this mascot is derogatory or inflammatory in fact given the nature as to his uh inception in creation by an aquina tribal member we concur that the symbolism is an accurate depiction of our eastern peoples in an area of cancellation it is important to judge all matters concerning cultural appropriation with discernment wisdom and compassion we stand in support of the wampanoag tribe of gay hat equiner sincerely and i'm just going to say the chief of the chapman courtic tribe of the poconogen nation thank you very much thank you thank you and that actually reminds me mr oliver i just wanted to run by you just sort of protocols for tomorrow evening reconfirming what we agreed on so we will start we agreed sort of a little bit longer one person on each side i spoke with to start off the evening i spoke with mr carney when he was here at the last meeting and he agreed to sort of kick off that side his side with about as we said about 10 minutes i think dr hall for dartmouth resident from the naacp will do the other side and then we'll open up for general public comment um i spoke with mr galesha he's going to be able to run a timer i appreciate this that the people speaking will be able to see because sometimes when you're speaking you don't realize how long you're talking right it will be in their eyesight um it will have a two-minute timer but we're not gonna like um it will just be i think a visual indicator to everyone to sort of your time's about up and then after if after like another minute they haven't finished up then i think we'll you know sort of intervene to and the idea is by setting a sort of a two to three minute limit for public comments it will allow us to maximize sort of the number of people that we are that we are able to speak tomorrow evening because i know we're anticipating a large number of people there the intention was to sort of alternate between sides if the lines are different we can we can sort of vary from that mr nunes what i was thinking as i've been thinking about this is why don't we open the microphones on both sides to whomever okay we don't need you know you you know the first person can be on this side and say i'm in favor this one against and then the next person over here is well i'm against and then this one's whatever side they're on it'll make it a lot easier as they're trying to get out of their seats into the aisles and go from there number one number two are we only listening to dartmouth residents as this is a dartmouth issue i do not think so i'm not sure okay i mean this is a dartmouth question okay i don't i don't necessarily agree with that issue with all due respect we don't need somebody coming down here from boston or east overshoot to tell us how to or what we should be doing this is this is about this is a dartmouth issue it's no different than when i sat here and said we should have on aside from our faculty and administrators type of deal but whoever the uh at large people were they were going to be dartmouth residents because this is a dartmouth issue you're welcome to make a motion i respectfully disagree with that position because our teams do travel to other communities and they do wear that name on their their uniforms and we are announced as such in other communities that have been said i am one member of this committee right as it stands there are no restrictions on who can speak any member of this committee is welcome to make a motion and we can have a vote on that so i guess my question um is at the very least um i think it's important that whoever comes up to the microphone and maybe this goes without saying that they state their name and where they're from 100 absolutely agree on that i also um i also plan to ask everyone to be respectful yeah right i know people are very heated about this issue we are all in opposition on different sides but i still think that people who could disagree can speak respectfully about an issue and i expect members of our community to follow that that example we can all agree to disagree agree and i will also say that i'm gonna i will say this maybe i'll ask you about this that if things do get disrespectful that's it the meeting's over that's it simple as that right so people need to be respectful tomorrow they'll have their two to three minutes to say their comments to tell us what they what they think and everyone needs to be respectful of everyone else's opinions um so on the issue of i do agree everyone needs to state their name and where they reside mr news if you would like to make that motion i will we can we can vote on that motion that's fine now let's kind of sit and wait and see what happens tomorrow night okay we can make that motion as well since it is our meeting correct um but i think i think we're sort of all in agreement on sort of what the ground rules are for tomorrow night um and so that's fine like i said i mean again if you just instead of you know everybody said oh yeah there again just let them whatever side of the microphone they wish to go to let them and it's not you're not picking sides or anything of that nature that that's my fault that's that's the way to do it i think so uh probably make things flow easier my only other question for you all is that we spoke last time about sending sort of an end of end of meeting target yes right like i don't think we want to be here until 11 30 at night agreed are we in agreement i agree so my sense is that about 8 30 we say okay we're going to have x if there's still people we're going gonna say we have five more three more we shoot for eight o'clock and then we're done for 8 30.

door program to testify kathy betts director department of human services kathy please is kathy there anyone from department of human services if not her testimonies in support moving on sherry nakamura director testifying for hey coalition sherry please aloha chairs kidani and san buenaventura vice chairs kim and uh ihara and members of the committee my name is shari nakamura director of haye coalition a community hui providing a community voice for public education we support hp 1999 hd1 our coalition has mainly been focused on k-12 education but we know that quality early learning opportunities is critical for building a foundation for our k-12 system hawaii has a mixed delivery system which takes into consideration the differing needs and wants of our families and communities we are grateful for the preschool open door program which provides state support for economically struggling families we know that in addition to state funds with pod there are also federal and county subsidies available for families our hope is that our state is tracking the data for these different funding mechanisms so that we can optimize our state funds effectively thank you for this opportunity to testify thank you sherry next to testify vivian ito from early childhood action strategy vivian peace good afternoon chairs vice chairs and other committee members thank you for the opportunity to speak in support of hp 1999 preschool open doors is a critical subsidy program for supporting preschool age children's school readiness it provides access to early learning for low and moderate income children who may not otherwise qualify for general child care subsidies which require parents to be working or in school or training increased funding for pod is critical both to make up ground after a 60 funding cut last year that resulted in drastically lost capacity and a waiting list for services and to begin tackling the significant commitment the state has made via act 46 to expanding preschool opportunities for children we appreciate the legislature's support for early care and learning and urge you to pass this measure thank you for the opportunity to testify and please know i'm available for any questions thank you vivian next to testify kathleen algar hawaii children's action network speaks kathleen please uh good day cheer kadani and chairs and women tara and committee members catherine augur with h-cam speaks you have our testimony and strong support of this measure um preschool open doors is very important to our families that can't afford uh child care on their own and that also don't qualify for the federal child care subsidy program it's due to budget cuts in 2020 it's serving less children than it previously had um we know how important early education is to our youngest learners and so we urge you to um if not um uh restore the funding uh to expand the funding to also help meet the need um and the benchmarks that were set in act 46 thank you thank you kathleen members that's all the testifiers we have we do have written comments from department of budget and finance and testimony and support from executive office on early learning early learning board parents and children together kamehameha schools and two individuals members are there any questions of the testifiers any members from human services questions no we're ready okay members we both have quorum so we will be taking the vote um so um for house bill in 1999 house draft won the um committee on education chair votes aye oh i'm sorry i did that last time too okay we do have recommendations so um [Music] you might have to take over from this experience anyway house of bill 1999 house draft one the recommendation of the chair on the committee on education is to pass this bill with amendments defecting the date to july 1 2051 and that's only done so that the ways and means committee can figure out where it goes in the budget and how we can finance it so members if there's no questions post bill 1999 hd1 to pass with the amendment chair vote say house bill 1999 what's draft one um sharehold side vice chair of outside senator de la cruz excuse senator canoha excuse senator favela with the three members present two excuses recommendations adopted madam chair thank you thank you um for human services um we welcome senator cassio and same recommendation um senator missaluccia for the vote chair beautiful for committee on human services members we are voting on hb 19999 hd1 chair recommends password amendments chair votes i vice chair is excuse senator akasho hi senator misalucha vote say senator favela share with four members present and one excuse your recommendations adopted okay thank you very much good afternoon and welcome to the 3 10 p.m hearing of the joint committees on housing and education present today for the committee on housing we have myself we have senator moriwaki and we also have senator favela and senator rhodes for the committee on education we have myself my vice chair senator kim to my right and senator favela at the far end thank you okay we have one item on today's hearing and that is house bill 2345 hd1 relating to land it authorizes the acquisition of real property located in ewa beach on the island of oahu it appropriates funds to hhfdc to purchase the fee simple interest or acquire an interest in the real property located in ewa beach on the island of oahu to develop affordable housing with priority given to department of education classroom teachers in the beginning of their career our first testifier for this measure is hsta in support aloha laverne war speaking on behalf of also two week junior hsca president we support this bill however we do have a few amendments we would like to see the wording a reduction of waiver of school impact fees owed by the seller a lesser for any project of the developer be removed we believe developers should pay impact fees that schools are being impacted with and our second amendment is to include all educators to retain our teachers it's important that they have housing that's affordable besides just recruiting so recruiting and retaining our educators is key thank you so much for the opportunity to testify thank you very much our next testifier is department of budget finance with comments followed by hhfdc with comments followed by department of education in support hgea with comments and michael press in support is there anyone else wishing to testify on house bill 2345 hd1 okay it's not um members any questions or discussion senator favela yeah um this is a product of archival and i just want to add comments that um we all are for teacher housing and having the housing for availability and affordable but to my community i just wanted to share we're getting jammed up and buffs up by over development and lack of infrastructure and roads volamore elementary is on a track system since day one the land if this is the land we're talking about by houlomon elementary that was actually supposed to be first expansion of the school campus fixing egress and outdoors of the school and fixing the road from kearanui drive to renton road right now if you're talking about this this is the tmk we're talking about i don't know what a teacher is going to leave unless they really work in of a beach because key only drive in the morning elementary school is backed up past the iroquois point road so if we're going to pass this pleasure we're going to go forward i just want to make it a note that they have to make road improvement and infrastructure improvements and help the school expand going forward because it's great to build houses but we don't have enough schools to hold the kids so these teachers not gonna have children they're gonna have children so i'm just saying that would recommend the recommendations that we fix our infrastructure in this area because we're already overcrowded every elementary is almost on the track system and our high school is 3200 students so that would be my recommendation going forward um as i kind of support this bill uh thank you chair um i would like to call on mr tanaka so this tmk that we're talking about here is there infrastructure as as senator fabella is concerned about we're building more housing and there's not infrastructure what what what kind of assessment has been done of this tnk so if this is the tmk next to holo moa i'm sorry good afternoon uh kidani vice chairs along randy thank you department of education um if this is the tmk which is adjacent to holy mole it's a 12 acre parcel that we have had discussions at some point um i believe it's castle and cook that owns it uh what had it desires to transfer it over to the does because no attention because that school is a year-round school quite quite full so they had entertained the idea of us acquiring that property next door we also understand that the property next door was intended for park space i had lengthy discussions with the current principal and the drive way is access to pick up and drop off is is a problem so the intention was to acquire part of that for that purpose but you know the rapid rate of growth for that area is is huge uh we're our estimate is that we need three elementary schools two elementary schools through intermediate school and the high school and we're behind that we have already started planning for it but it's behind infrastructure is behind i have had numerous discussions with d.o.t ed sniffen who is acting on behalf of the ssa uh brought that that issue up and he's trying to work out that that roadway situation accessed in that area so it's it's a continuum of discussions it is a problem so is the 12 acres large enough to do the two and four or five schools with infrastructure and housing no that was just for housing yeah the schools are planned in different different areas yeah it's not concentrated so the 12 acres there's enough infrastructure for the affordable housing at some point we stepped back and sfa was taking the the lead on that um it still needs development so it's premature in a sense moving forward on this um what was your question again what was your question i couldn't hear my question oh yeah so is it premature to move forward i i would say no i think it needs to be all dynamic and concurrent because any delay is going to challenge us even further but considerations to infrastructure need to be so noted now okay thank you thank you thank you thank you i'm so randy the 12 acre parcel which is is it right next to the school right next to us so does the school need to be expanded if the other schools come online it'll relieve the pressure of that school so we'll we'll spread out the the students the other three elementary schools or two elementary schools that is part of the design to relieve the pressure on that school but you know we're talking three four maybe five years away so it is it more realistic to expand the school and just look at maybe one more elementary school if that's the case instead of trying to do two more complete schools um the multiplicity of options one is there are plans to go vertical think another two two stories so that school is carrying about 1200 students now and for an elementary school my understanding is the perfect place is about six to seven hundred kids and that school's running it's the last of our year-round schools was mililani yes about don and they went vertical um so back to your question does it make more sense to increase capacity there as the other ones come online i think that gives it part of the relief but not in its immediate form i think i think it's going to have to go year-round for at least another two years right but i'm just saying is if do we as as senator morwaki says premature for talk about uh housing for faculty when in fact the school may be in need of the expansion as far as and also the infrastructure and the entryway and roadway or whatever it is that is needed for classroom space there's always options to go to trailers it's not the perfect situation but it makes some degree of accommodations for the enrollment the turnaround points and some of that need to be worked through and that parcel i was just out there last week they've started on the green space construction there's about maybe an acre available that they haven't touched but i'm not part of that discussion that's a discussion that the ssa should be having with the landowner but then there's a question that senator fabella brought up that if you're going to put in x amount of of um housing there are there's going to be x amount of students more students and they're going to want to not go to another school they're going to want to be there so again i mean are we um not really looking at right-sizing all the submitting commitments prematurely your your questions are are very appropriate i don't have the answers for you i have parts for consideration but the rapid growth of that neighborhood is pretty substantial but part of the planning for that neighborhood and knowing the rapid rules was to include uh two additional elementary schools my recollection yes that has not yet happened and again um most campuses for elementary schools are at the 6 700 level i think what we have to look at is and what their needs are going to be at that point um yeah yeah you're absolutely correct and on the other hand too you have to remember that the school facility agency well that law was passed two years ago um you know the governor only last week or last month appointed the the executive director so technically nothing's you know moved so that's what the real issue is so you should know we we have contracts on the planning parts of some of those schools you put it perfectly the kids are not going to stay in elementary school forever they're moving up so we're going to have additional stress in that area on the upper grades campbell is the largest high school we've got in the state and that becomes more problematic as the kids graduate up we've got kapolei and campbell but they're all pretty pretty good-sized mililani is huge so i'm describing the problem i'm sorry but um that's what we face [Music] thank you okay i'm ready sorry can you go forward so can you um kind of give them a visual of where these elementary schools are projected to be built not in my community even though whole appeal is evil beach but it's going to be built in that community which already some of those kids from whole peeling is going to ever about three to four hundred kids and someone going to ever makai they're not even going to the middle school in honolulu so that's the reason why eliminate the sixth grade wing to alleviate that and they're still yet not going to take away hula more off of a track system because the schools that we're thinking about building is in the whole pili kapolei region it it's primarily on the what was called the ever plane in that general area but because of the home growth of the you know the construction in that area we hear numbers from 20 to 30 000 additional homes you know even if you put half a kid in that you're talking another 15 000 kids so thank you any further questions numbers thank you education yeah so so chair i i don't think we have any further questions um should we go into recess then yes okay we're going to recess and we'll come back for decision so the joint committees on housing and education are now back for decision making chairs having conferred the recommendation for the committee on housing will be to pass this measure with amendments in particular hhftc's recommendation for an appropriation for fiscal year 2023 will be a blank appropriation and we want to note in the committee report several of the concerns that have been raised in testimony of this hearing first hsta's concerns about the need for housing for teachers of all seniority levels and hgea's concerns about the need for housing for all government employees not just teachers well note the appropriation requests made by hhfdc for their fair market value appraisal report and the annual maintenance including landscaping and public safety we will also note senator favela's concerns about the lack of infrastructure including roadways senator pavellan did you want to elaborate on those concerns thank you i mean the bottom line is i mean i'm battling because i want the teachers and everyone to have housing care but the first thing um when i got in is we have too much trafficking of a beach um i had converse with the developer and we stressed this over the years gentry is leaving our community after the development of kerali and they were the extension was called kia nui extension can we drive extension they decided to go back and get a conditional use permit to change that status and then this is the deal that they're making now covering that big hole that was a big hole was for draining of the water filling that up now and making some kind of deal now because they have small homes they can build but i talked to ed too and i told ed that i cannot support teachers housing unless the connectivity is priority and right now it's not seem to be that it's going to be priority it's going to be in the notes going forward in the notes it will not be a priority unless the world connectivity is a priority and the expansion of the school having chance to have our classrooms this bill is kind of hard it's really hard for me on my decision even though i'm going to talk about the roads but to me we can make the roads but if it's not a priority it's just the suggestions in the notes um it's really hard for me to um to to even emphasize the needs of roads in my community it really is and i have a lot of teachers in my community too so i'm really really hard to explain that it is very emotional for me to prefer to come up with it because um i came here as you know because like i said i respect the chairs how hard you guys work on this thing so when i seen the beginning notes of what had in the earlier decision i didn't make any preparation because the thing was what you said in the beginning on on what you said in the earlier notes so um i cannot have the best things of both worlds i'm gonna have to um i cannot support the bill sure um not even in the notes i cannot so yeah i cannot thank you senator from bella we will note those concerns in the committee report as just stated and we also want to note in the committee report senator kim's concerns that you raised about does need to assess the elementary school needs and expansion of infrastructure in the community before moving forward with this project yeah but can that be put into the bill that provided that um the doe does a better job at assessing the needs of the school and the and the accessibility and and the egress can it be put in here on page one instead of putting it in like in the committee report it says here for the purpose of developing affordable housing facility development affordable housing with a party given to location department classes in the beginning of their subject to or provided that the doe facilities do a better assessment as to what the schools needed senator kim you're correct we can do that assessment uh on on the growth needs and part of our planning process to determine the size of the school and its location and approximately yes we do that on a recurring basis we do that for core village the new call rich the new one coming up we probably like to stay out of the discussion regarding how big the roads are and its traffic flow that's not what we do we would defer to department of transportation but we can't do the numbers on on the school's anticipated size and all of that yes can we do that yeah we can put that in the building thank you senator kim so if the doe is going to entertain that then i just again i'll refer to what i said earlier about the rules um i just want to put in the committee notes to the dot or whoever needs to make this road and this road complete and happy are not exactly for white roads i'm just expecting the thing to extend to to renton road we're not asking for wider roads egress and outdress for the school and extending the road to renton road that's not and that's not too much of asking but but senator kim had said and then randy had confirmed i'll change my vote to reservations so again to just be clear um one of the amendments in this bill that we will be making now is to for the doe to conduct the elementary school needs assessment as just discussed by senator kim okay and then the final note that we'll make in the committee report is that the entity making the determinations of about reductions and waivers of fees will be the dma doe and sma as the case may be sfa sorry sff [Music] okay um okay uh members any questions or discussion all right so we'll take the vote now for the committee on housing the recommendation for house bill 2345 one will be to pass this measure with amendments um chair boats eye vice chair vote side or voice chair both sides uh uh senator kanohoo excused [Music] your recommendation is adopted thank you very much thank you for the committee on education uh the same recommendation chair votes eye chair votes eye on house bill two three four five with amendments leicester votes eye center dela cruz excuse senator kanoha excuse senator favela reservations is voting on affirmative recommendations thank you thank you and there be no further business this hearing is adjourned we are now convening the committee on education 315 meeting we are here in room 229 today is monday march 21st and i'd like to take this time to remind testifiers that we have time restriction on our hearings limited to to a one minute testimony per testifier per bill thank you so first on the 3 15 pm agenda is um scr11 urging the department of education to include the teaching of financial literacy in the existing personal transition plan course requirement for each student to testify super interim executive interim superintendent ayashi please testimony in support of scr011 thank you for thank you terry um we also have that's the only person testifying in person we do have written testimony from five others all in support members any questions so terry did we pass something like this last year uh i believe we have a resolution so we have been working um yes i'm sorry i mean do we need this if we already have one but does this do something else i think the resolution was for this year um so we have we have been making progress on this area and so um we are uh committed to continuing that work okay so we need this resolution um we we will continue whether we have it or not so okay but we did pass one just like it yes it was very similar okay thank you okay moving on scr 23 sr17 requesting the department of education to expand transportation services in the pearl city school district you testify interim superintendent fifayashi please turkey donation randy tanaka office of facilities and operations as you know transportation has been a little bit of a challenge for us in the last two years but we stand on our testimony we have pulled and looked at the pearl city complex and and we find that the school that has a little bit of the challenges pearl city high school the rest of the schools we're making that accommodation um so we plan to adjust for those needs and work forward thank you uh we have no other testifiers you might as well stay there because i'm sure we have questions you have any questions so do we need this do we need this result i i think we need to monitor it for another year to see what as we walk out of code provided we have no challenges but right now we're making the accommodations for transportation what about all the other schools the all other schools are not meeting their maximum capacity of seats we are making that accommodation it's only pearl city high school that we have a little bit of a challenge but what about all the other schools around the island oh statewide our biggest problem area is in kona we are short about 75 to 100 drivers depending on what the day is like we are proposing we haven't completed our evaluation but it may require a different kind of compensation for that area because there's just not enough drivers our fear is that we start getting into a rape war with the other municipal um the ilion buses and those guys that kind of leads to nowhere we just get into a wage war so we're trying to develop more drivers well i'm just concerned when we introduce such specific resolutions per area that high impacts other areas and you know if you do it for one you're going to get for all and so um you know that's why i asked do we really need a result if that's something that can be dealt with with the legislator of the district to talk it over with the schools i would i would ask for to give us a period of time too and not because you hit it right on the hill thank you thank you thank you so much randy and the other thing i was going to ask is to talk about the the uh lack of drivers and we're not the only state that's having this but it impacts us most because we are an island state and we can't it's not like we can coerce companies from across the boundary in our state line to to come and drive for us so that's you know the bigger issue too um we have specific federal regulations when it comes to bus drivers has that been looked at as to whether or not we can ask the feds in periods of crises you know to how can it be relaxed we couldn't ask the military to provide the and they have bus drivers we couldn't ask the military we couldn't ask the tour drivers because they're not licensed for school buses so is there any way that we are looking at asking our congressional delegation to help us amend that in times of emergencies we have explored those options but the standard for school bus drivers is fairly rigid the other option we are looking at is the vans under 15 passengers do not require that cdl license to that degree allows us mobility costs us a little bit more because the carry potential but but we can service some of some of the more challenged areas the challenge with uh smaller vehicles like i said is carrying capacity and with today's rising fuel costs so it gets a little more expensive but all options are being considered we you write we talked to the national guard and we spoke to general hara and it was a challenge there tried to get him on municipal transportation we've done compensation for parents to carpool it's still just a lot of drivers thank you randy appreciate it moving on scr 28 sr 22 requesting the voe to establish programs and educational opportunities to increase media literacy and promote digital citizenship to testify interim superintendent hayashi things thank you and you have one individual who has also provided written testimony and support members questions moving on scr 43 sr 38 requesting the department of education to conduct an electrical assessment of public schools for purposes of heat abatement and air filtration upgrades testimony from interim superintendent please [Music] good afternoon turkey donny first year kim um sin in 2007 we started an electrical assessment statewide we're about 70 percent complete of all our electrical capacity uh and that has followed along with if we could accommodate some of the heat abatement issues that we would put in x amount of air conditioning units it's a school-based program so we do the assessment for the electrical carrying capacity and we work with the schools to get more ac up to that capacity and there's an ongoing process of upgrading the electrical systems the report is 1800 pages long it didn't get a chance to read it all last night but it is hbo no um so so that's kind of what so if you guys have already started one is this resolution not necessary then okay thank you thank you service questions moving on moving on sr 81 sr 74 urging the department of education to recognize and remedy statewide school transportation and equities by increasing and prioritizing school bus services for school children from low to moderate income families randy you're up again good afternoon i'm sure it's longer for you than it is for me but um we have more painful for you there is a we're looking at a process uh and really it starts with school lunch programs that are free and and transportation is free um we have reduced meal programs where transportation is free so the discussion we're having now as they are the most median don't actually have good access to transportation to school we're beginning to try level who gets how we do the application it's a little lengthy we have to start that process sooner but there could be some imbalance how come i can't get transportation if they can't take transportation so so you have already started yes you have this okay so this is not needed also thank you thank you do you know when you expect to finish it by the thing how much complete are you we're we're pretty close we um my transportation person uh suggested that we do a pilot in the second semester of the next few years of january thank you moving on scr 131 and sr 115 requesting department education to implement a filipino history culture and identify social studies course for high school students to justify interim superintendent please good afternoon again vice chair from the members of the committee my interim assistant we superintendent on a written testimony and we thankfully offer comments on scr131 thank you for the opportunity thank you um consume we have next amy abbayani and support is amy there hello amy oh thank you very much for hearing this resolution we believe it's very important and we're so grateful that this has been initiated by public and private high school students and i stand on my written testimony thank you very much for hearing this thank you amy next to testify patricia hollaball in support patricia yes hi thank you this is patricia halagow i'm a professor at the college of education um and i strongly support this resolution i represent the tnalic filipino education council and we strongly support this based on research and benefits of having a curriculum that represents our students um i also feel like our students have spent i've had the opportunity to work with the filipino curriculum project high school students and they're designing an actual curriculum that they want to learn and i've been impressed with that the work that they're doing and they've been working with teachers and many community members around this curriculum and so this is one that we feel that would add greatly to the curriculum in the department of education and represent the 23 percent of filipinos that represent the doe and so i hope that you will support the resolution that's been inspired by our public school students thank you thank you patricia next to testify caitlyn jane agnes it's caitlin here yes i'm here please please proceed hello okay hello i'm a recent graduate from kapolei high school and a member of the filipino curriculum project i'm a second generation immigrant and from the philippines and i grew up feeling a disconnection because i couldn't speak ilocano fluently or know much about the filipino history for this reason i felt law saying that i'm filipino-american i know a lot of people who are ashamed to say they are filipino and so i don't want future students to feel lost within their ethnic identity because they don't have that connection filipinos represent 25 of hawaii's population and we're one of the largest ethnic groups in the doe so it's important that we have more in-depth representation as a daily student after the representation in education is so important to provide space that students like me can learn about ourselves and help me feel proud about who i am we already receive a lot of support from the doe by connecting with various education leaders and we hope we can gain your support as well thank you thank you very much caitlin next to testify shannon crystal ball shannon there next to testify brianna agas thank you good afternoon chair kirani vice chair mercado kim and members of the committee my name is brianna kamatagas and i'm a graduate student at the university of hawaii at manoa i strongly support this resolution as a second generation ilokana and yonseiko say japanese at the university philippines students only comprise of 9.3 percent of total graduate and undergraduate students despite being one of the largest ethnic groups here in hawaii if we wish to see more university enrollment we must include filipino history and culture and high school courses to allow for students to see their own communities heritage and ancestors be represented for our youth to know themselves they must first learn their histories and in doing so students can feel a sense of belonging and want to contribute to the greater community of hawaii please refer to my written testimony for more detail but thank you so much for the opportunity to testify your time and consideration thank you brianna next to testify elisa espinosa is the lisa there present chair elisa not present okay moving on marissa hella go hi hello my name is marissa and i'm a junior at punahou school and i'm a member of the filipino curriculum project our curriculum project is a student-driven public private school collaboration of filipino students we are creating a curriculum about filipino history culture and identity and are submitting a course proposal to the doe we are made up of 11 student collaborators and we all submitted written testimony about why having more filipino representation in school is important to us we are aware that there are some opportunities to learn about filipino history in school but we feel like it is not enough we want a focused course one that can go in depth and further empower filipino students our curriculum is made up of three units historical contexts culture and connections and filipinos in hawaii with an overarching theme of identity the curriculum is geared towards filipinos and non-filipinos that hopefully inspires others to embrace their ethnic identities and helps us feel seen in education we've already received a lot of support from the doe but we hope that we can gain your support as well thank you thank you marissa next to testify lauren watarita is lauren there going once going twice that is the last of our um zoom testimonies we have another like uh 19 or so testimonies in support of this measure members any questions of the testifiers question for d.o.e please so terry in your testimony he says that um there are many opportunities existing to study filipino history and culture and benchmarks so um you've heard like the testimonies do you feel that that doe is already covering this or um i think not to the extent that this group um is proposing to do and we we don't disagree at all with um you know what they're saying we think every ethnic group you know should um be able to have as much opportunity to learn about their heritage cultures we do have mechanisms in our department that can allow for the development of these opportunities and we've had some preliminary conversations and we are you know happy to continue to work together to um to find ways to um provide extended opportunities so how is this um correlates with the hawaiian culture what is being taught about hawaiian i think um well right now um because we are state a dual language state right so we do have some um content in in fourth grade that our students need to learn that's required as well as seventh grade and then when we go into high school we have the modern history of modern hawaiian history course um so in that sense you know there's no specific courses in i guess um that match that for the filipino culture nor for the other large ethnic groups in our state however you know asian studies is a course that is available as an elective and as well as ethnic studies and well i certainly agree with the testifiers and of course i am also part filipino but i'm also quite korean and you know and of course there's a large population of japanese so i just want to make sure because i try to be consistent what we do for one we should be doing for all and i hate if we're going to start to segregate as to you know which community gets a separate kind of curriculum at the schools um so i hope that we can get a well-rounded type of of education for all of the ethnic groups no matter what size they are um represented within the doe and especially the host culture yes i i agree totally with you that um that holistic perspective is very important which is covered in the asian studies and the ethnic studies okay thank you thank you thank you terry thank you for the question thank you senator kim but the reason why it's is great that what she had brought up and i will give you this um it's great majority of these um ethnic um backgrounds most of them can speak their language the only one that is lack of speaking their language and knowing their ethnicity is the hawaiian group i know you're teaching them in fourth grade intermediate and high school but again that was part of um hawaiian is a second language but first language english is a second language but again this is great i listen to these kids i think it to myself man when i was in high school i should have brought this up because that's one of the biggest things in high school today local kids who have part online is losing their identity their culture and where they're being at home you know speak hawaiian they barely barely know anything about hawaii and sad part of them give you guys this you guys don't think that it's kind of out of the question so learning your culture is really important in doing but you know hawaiian based school like nanakuli these kids barely know what is called big and my sister-in-law that teaches in the school took the ukuleles off the shelf told them we're going to play one song from israel kamakov only half of the students in the west side they didn't know who israel kamaka vivo is you see what i mean so our identity slowly is being lost and i come in these filipino kids and this curriculum coming up because guess what they just gave me an idea and i love that idea so thank you and i commend you guys for doing this but it's an idea that we need to do like senator kim said well wrong yes and thank you so much and um you know when you have some time we'd love to share some of our efforts with our world languages and our multilingualism so students are able to earn a seal of by literacy for their home languages and we have continued to add more languages that are not common across our nation to that list because we are so fortunate to live in our state and you know we honor the identity of all our students because that is really the core right of developing our future citizens so thank you so much thank you thank you very much thank you thank you terry all right moving on [Music] scr 171 and sr 163 urging the department of education and state public charter school commission to prioritize the hiring of dedicated staff to manage federal school meal programs to testify and term superintendent randy please share vice prayer i will be brief for the sake of brevity um we we manage the federal programs at the state level and primarily it's to do with compliance we have just in the last two weeks launched an effort to pay closer attention and apply for more federal grants so we'll be reaching a little deeper in the funding side of the game but we manage it at the state state level of compliance primarily [Music] next scr 216 sr 209 requesting the department of education to assess and report to the legislature whether and to what extent existing curriculum and training align with aaron's law insurance written testimony in support of scr 216 thank you for the opportunity to testify thank you terry next judith clark executive director for hawaii youth services network judith please [Music] you're on mute judith okay can you hear me now yes okay thank you i'm judith clark testifying on behalf of hawaii youth services network we are in support of this uh this resolution when i was in the fourth grade our school bus driver sexually abused me and five other girls in my fourth grade class the abuse went on daily for over a month because none of us had received any education on sexual abuse prevention other than beware of strangers we did not recognize it as abuse we did not know how to report it to a trusted adult and if we had received that kind of education we would have recognized it would have stopped at the first child instead of six this is why we need this kind of education in our schools from grades k through 12.

you're good to go thank you okay all right we're gonna call tonight's meeting to order and i will start with a reading of new jersey's open public law statement the new jersey open public meetings law was enacted to ensure the right of the public to advance notice of and attend the meetings of public bodies at which time any business affecting their interest is discussed and acted upon in accordance with the provisions of this act and board of education policy zero 162 the board of education of the borough of bound book has caused notice of this meeting to be posted in the board office and at found work high school and mailed more facts to the courier news foundry from southampton board of education and any person who has requested individual notice and paid the required fee please stand for the pledges i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america to the republic for which it stands our nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice [Music] one quick item um dr gallagher is unfortunately under the weather and not able to be here tonight uh so we need to appoint an acting board secretary uh so mrs terrence nell is here for us to do so um i would entertain a motion from the body to make that appointment for tonight ocean thank you mr powell thank you miss christina can we start with a roll call of the members please mr paul here mr papio miss cazino here miss lima here mr minha here here and i believe we have a forum of members for tonight great uh so in brief president's comments um just want to say thank you for everybody who's here i know that uh these are the meetings usually the board members tend to look forward to where we celebrate our students of the month and our staff and administrators of the month so i'm happy to see so many people here um we actually have some really great news i mean usually we don't have as much to share but we actually do have some really good stuff today um so first off i want to recognize dr uh alvin freeman who is going to be our next superintendent uh the board will vote on his contract tonight he's here with his family we're really excited about dr freeman coming into the district he passed a very rigorous process to get to this point we have very high hopes for what he's going to be able to accomplish for the district so i just want to say welcome thank you for being here and we're really excited to see that next okay big news number two for anybody who has not read the news um obviously state equalization aid has been a big talking point for the borough for a significant period of time as we've tried to catch up through our funding um this year we were expecting uh to see an increase in that aid but ultimately we were the beneficiaries of a significantly more generous number than we were expecting so uh boundary state aid number went up by about 4.6 million dollars from prior year which is a huge number is going to allow us really to catch up to where ultimately we believe we need to be to deliver a high quality education for the town of the community so again very exciting times you'll hear a little bit more about that during the budget presentation which mrs fisher is going to deliver tonight in dr gallagher's place um on another positive note uh we continue to uh revisit negotiations with our teachers union uh their expiring contract at the end of this year is one of the things that i as a priority when i took you know the position in early january we're just at the point now we're about to exchange proposals um so that'll really get things kicked off in earnest and we're hoping that we can make substantive progress towards reaching an agreement over the next few months and the last thing i want to do is just give a few quick shout outs our wrestlers ended their winter season we had a few people on the boys team as well as uh lennox rosberg who is a returning state placer and placed again this year uh who achieved some really significant individual accolades um so just want to highlight their performance and again thank them for uh putting out a very positive uh influence into the community into the state at large about bound brook you know our ideals and everything else um and then just looking forward to a few quick fundraisers i know uh we will be having the dodge hall tournament uh later this week and hopefully no board members get hurt in the act because we will have a team of our own entered um and then uh the tricky trade that the pto is going to be uh hosting at the end of the week which i believe is sold out but there may be tickets available at the door if they can swim so anybody who's interested um i would encourage you to participate in that as well uh and with that i believe we are going to move on to recognizing our students of the month um so i believe dr s is going to help us with both annex as well as lafayette school tonight dr s congratulations to lamont and excuse me [Music] [Applause] always thinking of ways to help smelly school improve she also speaks italian which helps them translate miss santa serma has been a wonderful addition to team smalls congratulations to mrs sanchez for being the gentleman [Applause] for community middle school mr sanchez hello again the community middle school is proud to recognize mr andy heiser as its gem award assistant for the month of march i've had the pleasure of working with mr heiser for the past 13 years throughout that time many changes have taken place inside the classroom there was a time when social studies teachers would stand in front of the room and lecture to the group thinking back to my days in school these represented some of the most interesting as well as some of the most boring memories of my childhood today teachers have almost an infinite array of digital materials with high-tech features at their disposal with the click of a mouse of the tap on the promethean board students can be whisked away to far away places and take virtual tours throughout history however one thing in education has remained constant that is the ability of a teacher to be able to connect with students whether lecturing in front of the classroom or taking a digital adventure mr heiser has the gift of being able to capture a student's imagination engage their minds and challenge their intellect oftentimes colleagues will ask how do you do it how do you get through to them mr heisner usually responds i don't know we just talk about dead people the truth is there's much more to it than that every year even the most hard-to-reach students come around and work hard in mr heiser's class most leave middle school with stories about their favorite feature mr heiser is that person to so many for no other reason than the simple notion that students know mr heisen really cares about each of them it is not uncommon for mr heiser to stop teaching in the middle of a period and conduct a restorative circle in order to address a concern or discuss a topic that is affecting his students [Music] over the years mr heiser has coached high school football and basketball chaperone the seventh grade trip rutgers day trip the rbcc holocaust trip in the eighth grade washington dc trip he's worked on multiple building-based committees district initiatives and basically anything i bring to the table in order to try to make a school a better our school a better place each year mr heiser is asked to be a mentor for new teachers in the district and is a past teacher of the year although his moves on the dance floor have become a bit more rigid over time mr heiser was at the cms dance on friday and will be there in the upcoming spring spring dances several years back mr heiser was instrumental in establishing a collaborative environment where teachers would plan and deliver cross-curricular lessons that highlighted the same theme among classrooms mr heiser helped to establish grady level marking period awards that celebrate students effort grit and determination in the classroom these activities are now woven into the fabric of the middle school each year we take a staff picture at cms and remarkably mr heiser finds the same shirt in his closet and make sure he wears although he might not always read the entirety of my emails it goes without saying that mr heisner is the heart and soul of the middle school on behalf of the middle school staff and to quote to quote mrs heiser andrew come get your award [Applause] um [Applause] the high school mr smith unfortunately our men could not be with us this evening but she still deserves the accolades of this description so it is with great pride that brownbrook high school recognizes mrs miss emily glauber as the death of the month of march miss glauber is a remarkable teacher who goes above and beyond every week for her students her lessons challenge engage and differentiate for all of her students she recently organized her class of freshmen to read to elementary school students the freshman did an amazing job thanks to ms calabro's dedication and diligence in preparing her class for this initiative she creates a safe working environment for all students and makes sure everyone feels welcome her positivity is felt as soon as kids enter her room and she's always happy to help her fellow teachers wherever she can additionally multiple students feel that ms glauber is their favorite teacher and they feel like they can go to her at any time when they are feeling down or in some need of guidance recently mrs albert was asked to help help a student he's helped ease the students nerves about moving into english 2 next year when she has been an esl student for many years ms glauber gave sample assignments and a book to share with the student to give her an idea of what it would be like in a general education english class she's very helpful and understanding he took the time to hear concerns for this for this student as they had some anxiety about the transition next year this was very helpful to assist the student and even though the student hasn't met miss clower yet success is anticipated in her class next year furthermore ms glauber is doing a fantastic job with the underclassmen and has been extremely supportive and patient during this transitional year for this particular group her lessons are fun and engaging and her former students always speak very highly of her class miss glauber is both caring and excellent at her craft and this recognition for her hard work is long overdue discovers attentiveness attitude and compassion make her an effective teacher who deserves to be recognized as the gem for the month of march where she is a great example of the kind of teacher that is worthy of this recognition congratulations miss cloud [Applause] and for the central good evening the district would like to recognize kenny synod as the district's gem award recipient kenny is an employee that always goes the extra mile for anyone in the district when i asked a few of his colleagues to describe penny they said the following he has gone above and beyond to accommodate special education students by rerouting bus routes so that students would have shorter rides additionally kenny always has a smile on his face and a happy-go-lucky attitude which makes our students with special needs comfortable and want to ride the bus to school kenny is always very positive thoughtful and energetic his commitment to excellence has inspired others he is the kind of person that never says no to any task the vibe that he brings to any room he enters is always full of positivity and motivation kenny is super supportive to all of the employees around him and there is not a single problem out there that he cannot get resolved over the past year kenny has worked through many different unpredictable challenging events including such as covid and hurricane ida he made those events feel semi-normal in our district during the pandene pandemic excuse me kenny drove to a local farmer's market once a week to pick up the weekly bread delivery he also assisted in unloading the donation trucks and organizing the groceries he is always ready for all of our district trips and always says yeah this is our time to save the district for contracting out buses for this why spend when we can do it he is always ready to for all of our athletic programs no matter what kind of sport it is or how far the distance he makes sure the students get to their games kenny is never without a positive attitude and always has a smile on his face from the beginning kenny always strived to do the best possible job and continues to go above and beyond for our students parents and his co-workers kenny always has the best interest of the students in mind when making decisions he is dedicated patient a team player and caring those are just a few words that describe him thank you kenny for all of your continued dedication to the bound brook school district congratulations and happy very little friday [Applause] yes of course me i like it thanks so much at this time we're gonna take a brief five minute recess anybody who would like to depart at that time before we get down to the normal courses board meeting can feel free to do so thank you so everything earlier stands i'm not trying to give you more jobs i understand you're unmuted and you could go from when you were ready we got most of them yes in one second yeah i was totally wrong clearly okay so i'll bring us back to order here at 7 o'clock we're going to move on to agenda item number 2.3 where mrs fisher will take us through uh the first pass of the 2022-23 budget mrs fisher so those of you that know me i often say that i um don't even know how to balance a checkbook but here i am presenting the district budget tonight um so bear with me the first part of the presentation is about how the state of new jersey determines our local budget just to give a little bit of background the second part is more of what i feel a lot more comfortable with and talking about what we're actually putting into the budget that you'll be approving on the board to be approving at the end of the month of april um so an adequate budget what is an adequate budget um this just gives some information about how it is determined um the state calculates the local share cost or what is believed to be the local taxing authority um that we would be able to raise and embark for the school's budget so the difference between an adequate budget and the local cost share if one exists is covered by state equalization aid over the past couple of years we have been an underfunded district so it's wonderful to get the news that they're actually pumping more money into our budget moving forward the local fair share um so now that the state has figured out what an adequate budget is the next step is to figure out how to pay for it um the state figures out how much the local community is responsible for and how much the state is responsible for and that's the local cost share there are two variables to consider in deriving a local cost share one would be property values and the other is the income of the district's residents the aggregate property value and income of the district are separately multiplied against rate multipliers and i'm hoping that you're understanding this as i'm going through um so the little um sequence there says property value times property rate plus income times income rate divided by two is how they come up with this number and this is very very tiny but will also be available on the district website um you can see there what is highlighted is the local fair share um it's 13 million and a bunch of numbers after that i can't read without glasses on and then it says here that the equalization aid i believe that is 22 million roughly um i also yes 22 million 230 2 000 and four dollars so our budget this is how we come up with it our local fair share um expected number is 12 million 800 000 and the expected equalization number is 24 300 uh 320 000.

this is okay thank you [Music] yes okay we're back from our executive session and we'll continue our meeting next on the agenda is our call to the public so we check so we've got um if i just could go over kind of what the standard is for that and we also appreciate it but in order to ensure that each individual has an opportunity to address the board all speakers are asked to keep their remarks two minutes or less speakers are requested not to repeat what other speakers have said but indicate that they agree or disagree with the previous speech comments concerning specific teachers coaches other personnel are not appropriate and should not be addressed and should be addressed with the supervisor or superintendents so keep it to two minutes please and it is not an interactive discussion we're here to listen to what you have to say so with that we will call on um louise howard um first we acknowledge the very beautiful the very normal the very american right for citizens to participate in formulating policy for our general welfare and in this particular opportunity now intended only for the best preparation of ongoing generations so that they can perpetuate the success the usla undeniably the greatest nation in the history of iran in which citizens are actually encouraged to disappear so mayor garland turned the call you can go to the victims now here we are friends advocating as parents mayor citizens concerned about the future of the usa and we must express gratitude for the unregulated services of the continental war for overseeing the practical and justified expenditure of our tax dollars but before proceeding with the presentation it's important to acknowledge the work of sensible people in the arizona house and senate to correct the potential problems which may all remain a fat cotton mentioned in this presentation that there are too many bills to list here so we recommend going to the webpage www.azlynch.gov bills in order to view the policies imposed by the arizona legislature in each bill a separate handout will list the pertinent bills we inform that we will provide a handout with great detail about the following especially about uh background introduction the subject you know program material and library or curriculums including any references to what is commonly an erroneously called transgenderism a fully contrived forced artificial word designed to make the aberration appear acceptable and anything remotely related to what is commonly called critical race background it is obvious that this great nation is awash in moral and idiotic ideologies which promote liberty sexual homosexual radical aberrancies in most aspects of this society but importantly importantly specifically in what is called education see the handout the purpose of this is to determine how to review the board's involvement in following library catalogs curriculums and other sources how to get into them for any inappropriate material as defined by most americans those who understand anyone those who understand and respect natural law common sense in reality it is to determine if any material used in the curriculums is provided by anyone shown in a circle that is provided in the handout planned parenthood those kinds of people justification provided because we do hope that there is no resentment by the board administration staff and also understand that no one likes to be second guessed but also knowing that what is at stake screams for review first and immediately most importantly we are the parents of the educators your subjects second in the immediacy where the taxpayers provide the money which the district uses to be able to operate and so which allows us parents and taxpayers to decide how to allocate that money especially regarding the mission of education third and well not in the most immediacy but still greatly important american citizens who are worried about the moral direction of our beautiful republic sir we're about out of time and next up uh we have um this joanne howard i am continuing the letter that we have here um the method the study needs to be open and available to all parents especially to those most worried about education that their children are receiving but also to the taxpayers and all concerned citizens so we request cooperation to the in the following efforts how to access catalogs to usd with the continental esd 39 libraries on how to obtain a complete list of curriculum consultants used by the continental miss howard could you speak to the mike please whether any materials used in the curriculum is provided by planned parenthood the lincoln project black lives matter the 1619 project and which specific consultants by name do presently have arrangements with the continental school history how to obtain or get access to the curriculums the union representation of the teachers aot or nba the terms of each of these board members the conclusion we can imagine that you are already busy work schedule especially those unenumerated you do not need any requests for information which complicates that routine but still considering or easy to justify position we asked for your response but the realistic estimated time for providing satisfaction for our inquiries we thank you for your serious study for this presentation as inspired collaterally by the signaling and depressing information and the articles linked to the handout regarding the widespread interpretation and purpose of this education i don't know how much time i have but that's about it that age-appropriateness that this curriculum that is put forth is not of age appropriate children should be children they should be allowed if you could uh pronounce your last name foreign [Music] well actually i trust this is the appropriate forum for me um i think that elementary school is the stepping stone of adolescent life um i am collecting signatures to be able to be a considered candidate for the school board i live in green valley for four years i have a background in social work and clinical therapy i worked with the new york city police department i was a health care app the kid at ucla and i'm not sure this is the appropriate forum but i do have um the nonpartisan petition for anyone is that appropriate at this meeting i don't know um but i do have the petition if anybody outside um i have to sign that i need uh signatures i am going for 140 in case that you're disqualified and if anybody would like to speak to me i'd be more than happy to share what my you know thoughts are and what my uh approach would be to working with the collective board of school members 32 minutes people will see me and consider me and talk to me and if you're appropriate you protocols is appreciated i i don't believe we received any slips for the first reception of visitors okay moving on return to inpatient in-person learning getting there all right uh as the board can see our numbers have continued to be low uh since the omicron surge returned uh since we've made our changes in uh protocols we haven't seen any uh drastic uptick or or change so that's the end of my report any questions that's good all right at this point we're going to turn it over for a strategic plan update i'm going to bring jill hi everybody how's everybody doing good good good um i'm happy to introduce to you and you've already met her virtually but this is susan bratt she's from cso communications and she conducted interviews with you for the strategic plan and she's here today from minneapolis traveling she's been with cso for two years since 2020 i think yes thank you 2020 and previously she worked in school communications for 20 years so she's familiar with my job and has been facilitating all the engagement sessions and has been doing a great job and i'm so happy that members of the group are here today um our core planning team so you're going to hear from them a little bit but um susan is first going to give an overview of where we are today that's great oh sorry the magic usually hank does so okay he really pushed control i'm surprised okay thank you so um thank you so much for having us uh madam president superintendent the alien board um we are happy to be here with the corps planning team and again i'm just going to be here to talk a little bit about process and then we're going to turn it over to members of the core planning team because that's really members of your community and they should be the ones speaking about some strategic directions that they have come up with so a lot of what we're going to go through i'll go through really kind of quickly but first we want to talk a little bit about the different elements that we do when we do strategic planning and so um hank had a really kind of nice analogy recently about talking about you know the strategic directions and the mission and vision and value so we have a mission vision values that we're also working on updating that's kind of a parallel process involving different members of leadership and some of the members of the core planning team actually we met today again so again for first time sorry i forget which times are me again but um so those are really those big public-facing kinds of pieces and elements that we want to make sure that really speak to who district 99 is and then the strategic directions are the core work that the court planning team has been working on taking all of that input from last fall and really kind of creating some directions based on the community representation and bringing it to you the board and you will be voting on it later this spring um and that's the direction that then you give to the superintendent and the leadership who then kind of underneath in the iceberg we have you know all of those action plans and tasks and timelines and things like that but that's where the meat of that really kind of sits but it doesn't necessarily everybody always sees it so that's the how that it gets done so just a little bit of what we're working through there this is the strategic planning timeline so you can see we started last fall with uh engagements we like i said we are as jill already mentioned i had the opportunity to interview each of you in by phone i think or some on zoom and then i had an interview with the superintendent as well we did some then i was here in november we did some in-person engagements and we had some wonderful input especially from students at the high school both high schools we met during lunch and had lots and lots of paper on the wall so it was it was really wonderful to get that i know jill's already talked to you a lot about that we also did some focus groups and some different open forum sessions and then in uh february we were going to do it in january but covid kind of reared its head a little bit so we pushed it to february we had a two day retreat with the core planning team where we really dug in and we'll talk a little bit about that process there but we really went through a number of different pieces then we came back just a couple of weeks the tenth like not even two weeks ago we were back to meet again to sort of refine some of those strategic directions and then so that's kind of where we're at right now just looking ahead uh we'll be doing some more we did some community input already we'll be getting some more information about um strategic directions from you all tonight taking any notes from that and jill and i and we'll kind of take that back and reformat it and then hopefully you will be voting on that later this spring when the full thing comes together so engagement we'll go through this really quickly because i think jill has already presented this to you but again we did personal interviews focus groups and open sessions we had great input from all of those groups just again those are some of the key themes that you already saw in the engagement report but a lot of a lot of overlap with a lot of them talking about social emotional learning talking about life skills talking about student voice really being in mental health really being things that came up a lot and that certainly came up in our discussions uh with the core planning team so as we think about that again you you saw already that we had a number of community applicants there was an open call and we really tried to make sure that we had good representation and so uh originally had 12 i think we went down to 11 because one meeting one person wasn't able to make the switch from the january to the february sessions and so we were able to meet and i think everybody and i think one of the most powerful things uh in our two day workshop in february which both days were supposed to be in person the second day ended up being virtual because of supposed snowstorm that never really came but it came later in the day yes but we met over zoom and it was still a good workshop and uh one of the things we started off with was you know just really what did you think about day one and to hear people say that they felt heard in particular our students said that they felt heard which i think is a really powerful statement so so what did we do on those first couple days those first couple days we did an environmental scan uh really uh just sort of saying what's what's our current reality what what are we hoping for what are the trends that are happening in education kind of just looking at a bunch of different stuff there we looked at the practical vision sort of what do we want to see happen in three to five years we looked at maybe what's getting in the way and then we came up with some strategic directions all around that that main district that question about how can district 99 best leverage internal and external resources to better prepare students for college career and life so and this is all information that you can see later but in the environmental scan we really looked at what are the basic facts and data so anything from demographics to situational uh circumstances about that are specific to district 99 what are some of the recent accomplishments and what are some of those challenges we need to be addressing obviously pandemic being a very large one some trends looking at that and then also some advantages so what are some of the benefits and strengths that really give confidence to the future of district 99 the practical vision was a fun kind of exercise i think to really get people dreaming about what do we want to see i mean we even started with a visualization to kind of say what does it look and feel like in five years you know what do you see what do you hear and so we really they ended up in three big buckets kind of focusing on the beyond the walls of district 99 so what does that mean outside of the school day beyond academics and then obviously active and engaged learning so those were coming the big areas that we wanted to keep in mind as we work through some of the other processes the blacks is a challenging one not to be to use that word i guess it's kind of strange to use that word but it was uh that they were kind of like so now that we know what our vision is what are some of those things that might prevent us from getting there what are some of the things that are getting in the way and the reason we do that let's address what's getting in the way right away so that we don't come up with directions and then find out that we might have some blocks or barriers or challenges so we we worked through some of those and so some of the blocks that came up um was some things about liability and just knowing that we have this responsibility in a school district to to make sure that we're doing right by the students and families and staff um kind of capacity and balance and that really was significant obviously over the last couple of years of the pandemic and how how our staff relating to that how our families relating how are students relating to that the readiness for change knowing that any sort of strategic planning effort is about change and so getting that readiness for it even though there are some great things happening here what could we maybe enhance or improve upon and then really thinking about that emotional intelligence and and attitudes and just sort of mental state and then what other kind of external pressures might there be so we went through we won't spend a lot of time but this is the draft directions that went out to the community and these were very very draft they were never meant to be final uh but just was sort of a here's our first guess at what we can do so what are those innovative substantial actions that'll move us toward vision and so we did that with the community as well that's fine we worked that we got feedback from the community we got feedback from the leadership team and anybody could participate in that so i'm going to move to the more fun part um and have you stop listening to me and listen to members of art and i only know i can only remember their first name so i apologize i'm going to ask them to introduce themselves as well we do have somebody the three in the front are going to be presenting today actually and one back there and then cara is also here from from the core planning team as well so i know others wanted to be here but scheduling just didn't allow it so we're going to start with i believe it is meda is it not i think mayna is up first oh i'm sorry i will go through this uh so here are the strategic directions my bad um so in order to focus the district's efforts and better prepare students for college career and life and again we want to remember that these are draft we want to get some more feedback from you but we really are thinking about what will district 99 ensure and that was a word that really came across strongly from the superintendent and others about it's not just enough to create the conditions and hope that it gets there it's like what are we doing as a district to make sure that these things happen so we were talking about a equitable and supportive environment we're talking about recruitment retention support of high quality teachers i can't read that over there so i'm going to read it here we have growth of student ownership and agency and then also increased student engagement in post-secondary planning so now i will welcome maida i believe is our first representative so if you just want to introduce yourself hi i'm mera kuzminskas i'm a student at dgs and i'm obviously a part of the core planning team um one of the things that we did discuss is like as seen on the board an equitable and supportive environment i feel like as a student especially i really want to kind of i don't know stress the fact that i want to be in a school environment that i think is not only safe but supportive for me not just academically but also socially and just between like relationships between teachers and just how i can get the most out of my academic experience in school and so like one of the main points is like ensuring safe and sustainable opportunities that's just kind of like um kind of like a broad like subject i guess but like one of this like safe and sub safe and sustainable opportunities for all students is the fact that i get to be able to kind of really orientate my learning into my like future and career goals and i think that also other students should be able to do this individually as well and so it's just talking about how each of us should have as many opportunities as we can to really kind of further not only our education but our job experience and under the second bullet point it's developing and communicating common expectations for students and staff one of the main things that like us and the core planning team have really fought over is just kind of what is the student expectation and what is the student supposed to do to kind of reach that expectation and so a lot of the talking was just about how um there's this like really broad gap between students who don't really do their work at all and don't go to classes and students who feel like they're being really overworked and so we're trying to kind of bridge the gap between the two and try to talk about how we can kind of let all students be able to kind of manage their expectations and have teachers and the school itself be able to give students these good expectations and expectations that can kind of fit to everyone individually and then building a community is kind of what it is we want a greater community among students and students and between students and teachers and staff too i feel like as a student right now there is pretty like a pretty nice community between students and each other but i feel like we can really work better on creating a better community between teachers and students if there is one like that's good already but i think furthering improving the community will help really kind of build the strength of the school in general embedding social and emotional learning and equitable inclusive practices this just kind of includes how we can start really teaching kids outside of the classroom and outside of just doing lots of projects or essays i think we can really kind of broaden the horizon of how we've been able to teach students into something that's a lot more kind of communicative and a lot more like orientated towards individual students and less as this kind of grade based system and then prioritize prioritizing open two-way communication again it's kind of reiterated in like the previous bullet points this is the fact that we really want teachers and staff that actually care and are empathetic towards students and this like two-way communication is really important just kind of opening communication between students and staff will really kind of further improve the students learning experience as well thank you and i think just to emphasize a little bit more yes [Applause] [Music] a lot of the the original work under this umbrella we kind of merged it with another one and so we wanted to make sure also that this is both an equitable supportive environment yes you know obviously first and foremost for our students but also for staff and so how are staff able to have communication with each other with administration and so it really is going throughout the organization and not role dependent so while there's a lot of conversation about students in here obviously because we are a school district and that is our mission um see i'm already saying hour we i'm just gonna move here but it is also you know we want to make sure that all members of the organization feel that supported and equitable access and then i also want to make sure because i know this was a big point for meda and a couple of the other students and it's just that access to students and so to access to opportunities and programs so there's different things that you know i don't have access because of transportation or because of this or that and wanting to make sure that there is that equitable access for all students to to participate so thank you can i ask you a question yes it was a great presentation thank you thanks she's just talking i know but but you said something about um and i'm putting spot here i apologize but um you said something about you know uh having supports to when you when because you know what you think you want to do and you want some some choices about getting there and i i know i know i'm just asking this question so you know off the top of your head what kind of supports do you think for for people for a lot of younger people who don't know what they want to do i mean certainly some people are self-directed they say i'm going to do this i'm going to do that but i would think most people are like i'm not really sure so what kind of supports do you think would would be most effective in that way yeah i'm one of those people that have no idea what they're going to do so i'm a lot older than you i still don't know either yeah i think one of the like main things is just having like a lot of more options available and like i think in my school currently there's lots of presentations for like different colleges and we do have a college and career center specifically but you have to actively like ask for meetings or you know you have to always kind of check the agenda to make sure to see if they have any other like open nights for colleges and i feel like i want something more broad than just going to college or going straight to a job i kind of want to have that like better like first-hand experience for any kind of like job opportunities that might have or like you know kind of having schooling that's outside of the traditional college experience i feel like there's not much kind of information or experience about colleges geared towards maybe the arts and even the arts maybe just like um having instead of going to college going to like any internships or like anything abroad i feel like i just want more kind of just like more talk or more information about things beyond college and things beyond just kind of that whole like college university or just like college job experience thank you so much thank you i was going to say i actually oh go ahead i was going to say i actually like what you're saying because when you talk about college and the cost and that kind of thing having that i think it's also almost being referred to as gap just to figure out what that next step would be before you invest kind of money and time and not completely certain of what it is that thing you want to do so yeah thanks for that do you think it would be helpful to have employers come yeah honestly i think maybe a little bit more about that i think it would uh i definitely want to know what it feels like to be working in the places or jobs that i think i want to go in and i think that extra like help from people who have experienced that might help and i think it's just important to kind of not only get people who have been in college and jobs but just get like kind of people from everywhere like people who want to actually share their information towards students i think would help and i know that certainly came out as somebody from the outside when we did the focus groups last fall and there was a focus group of a lot of business people and chamber and different people from the community and they were you know sad because they had done some of that before but then pandemic stops some of that so they're very people are very excited to see some of that coming back i think so yeah thank you and also just making sure that within the equitable and supportive environment was a lot of discussion about mental health and how do we support the mental health of students in particular but also the mental health and stress that's going on with our staff as well so next we'll have kim introduce yourself about growth of student affairs hi i'm kim vanzan um i'm the parent of a sophomore here at south and i also have a seventh grader over at o'neill so uh the goal i'm presenting or the strategic direction sorry that i'm presenting is the growth of student ownership and agency um and i'll let you have some ownership and agency and actually reading the bullet points [Laughter] and i'll just hit some of the high points that i i think that um some of the work the big word is uh growth that um we're not talking about um really even an end goal we're talking about a continuum and that growth is going to start where the student is and it's going to go in the direction the student goes right so it's it's that it kind of individualized um i also want to emphasize i think it's in there somewhere is this the one that has the culture of resiliency um the idea of being accountable and having that culture of resiliency is part of what will will help a student grow and really give them that ownership even the ownership of the successes as well as sort of the stumbles i think i want to also emphasize that these strategic directions are not all going in separate directions right this is really a web of directions and and this this direction supports other directions that you see there and those other directions will support this one one of those particularly i guess would be the mental health aspect that that we aren't expecting them to do this without our support that is the whole idea of helping them yeah um yeah and i think um you know and really thinking about that context and purpose of you know not just what am i learning but why am i learning it and i think that's a really important thing for all of us you know how do you apply what you're learning and you know as someone who majored in math it was like when am i ever going to use calculus or something but you know there are there are skills that you're learning and so understanding the why behind it um and i also not to put kim on the spot but this is one that challenged kim a little bit because while she is all about growth you know i would say she's all about growth she's also understanding that there's differences and we need to be age appropriate when we're talking about these things so what's what's age appropriate for ownership and agency of a 14 year old might be different than the 17-18 well and also just where the student is absolutely that every you know every 16 year old is not the same they're all coming from a different place they all need to grow they all deserve to grow but that may look different yeah so i think that was a key part of the discussions was that it is about growth and i love the way that kim said it just now about how you know where are they at and where they need to go and how do we help them do that so but every student getting that growth in agency so any questions for kim yeah so um was it the feeling of the group that we don't currently have a culture of resiliency no i i don't believe that that is something that we really stumbled with in in the meetings was trying to say we aren't saying this doesn't exist here what we're saying is that it may exist maybe as a byproduct of something else we really want to make it a direction we're going we want it to be a goal something that's in our view that we're intentionally making that happen not just oh and by the way making it part of the culture absolutely right i like that anything else next we have mary to talk about increased student engagement in post-secondary planning hello my name is mary martin and i'm a parent of a student who's currently at downers grove south but i'm i've also been in in this district uh for almost a decade because i've got older kids who've come through so this is something very near and dear to my heart which is trying to support the student and the parents or family and the community in increasing the engagement of the post-secondary planning so the group that everyone i mean it even dovetails with uh with what you were saying one of the very important things that have been laid bare by the pandemic is that uh college enrollments are going down costs are going up and there's something called a silver tsunami of retirements and there's actually quite a bit of need in the community intense recruitment for students both for colleges because the overall enrollment is down and also to they're going to be the you know people are needing uh college graduates or at least people who can take over from this tsunami of retirees who and this was already um happening before the pandemic it's accelerated through the pandemic so um this particular so so how we addressed it was three-pronged we want to support the students to see beyond you know that graduation day and also get them engaged actively already there's many things that have already been put in place recently like i think starting next year the students have to do the fafsa in order to graduate so that's the sort of thing that okay here's something extremely practical yeah everyone should do it so that sort of thing also engage and support the roles the role of the parents families maybe even siblings older siblings in in that post-secondary planning yes and and then of course extremely importantly increase student awareness of and exposure to a variety of options for after high school not just college as we know many different opportunities and the people out there the businesses out there are just clamoring for this sort of support because they're looking at already needing well they're looking ahead and seeing that there might not be the qualified people to take over in the midst of this silver tsunami of retirement so um now there's we did discuss a little bit about you know possibility of you know where do we how do we how do we go about that well you know collaborations with schools who are already participating in programs and of course prior to the pandemic there were quite a few things offered in district 99 dual enrollment classes in other high schools in nursing web design skilled trades co-ops technical apprenticeships so lots of lots of possibilities um and i think yeah so and then of course most importantly this this strategic direction is is being driven by the need in the community and also by the students because not every if if we only say there's you know here there's college you know some some students just are not willing to embark down that road of student loans and all the rest of it and there are employers out there who are desperate to hire qualified workers so basically this is very much i think what we thought was what you know directing driven basically driven by the students i think one of the the key things that a couple of things when we first started talking about this in february i have a memory of one of the students on the on the team she's not here tonight but she was talking about um some research that she had done in one of her classes that they had studied through uh you know just looking at state data about those who go to college but who actually complete college and you know the fact that she was bringing this in and saying what are we doing and how are we preparing students for that i think was a really sort of it sparked a conversation in the group for quite a bit and then also that second bullet about engaging and supporting the role of families in post-secondary planning understanding that not all families have experience with this so you know how do we help some of those families who this is new to them as well so how do we support our families with that so i have a question so i i get the silver tsunami and i get why a lot of people probably did look at what was going on and say i'm going to exit the workforce but i am curious i didn't realize that college enrollment was down as a result of you know did they have any statistics on what's happening there i mean there are some things i could think of like the expense of course but are there any things that they talked about why other than expense and well it was already going down before yeah and one can only imagine the expense and um i mean it's also the return on that investment i mean i think that there's also people saying are there other ways things that do i need a four-year degree to do x y and z um and just looking differently at what's what life is like and knowing that you know many of us if we went to college um you know i was i was all bent on being an orthopedic surgeon and clearly that didn't work out so i've been to orthopedic surgeons but you know but so i mean just thinking about you know do you always know what you want to do when you're 18.

the decisions they make today in the short term will help fulfill their long-term goals and strengthen their impact on society so that was really cool i also visited uh lakewood and um was able to speak with uh miss budd and mr lu and uh they explain a lot of the challenges um the unique challenges of today as well as acknowledging the great work that their staff does so it was it was um it was very interesting informative for a new school board member you know i need to catch up quick so that was great i do have an update or congratulations for the robotics team the sd 308 2338 gear forward robotics team competed this past weekend and they won and placed in the upcoming world competition in addition they finished fourth in the robotics games and that's setting a 2022 season record and they won the most prestigious award in all of the first robotics and that's the chairman's award and this award is given to the team with the most exempt that most exemplifies the principles of outreach equity and inclusion and the teams who win this award are automatically awarded a spot to compete in the world competition in houston texas so that's awesome and that's being held in april um april 20 20th through the 23rd and our district's team includes students from oswego east high school oswego oswego high school and eighth graders from plank trauber and junior high school so congratulations to the amazing team and the coaches for all they've done and best of luck at the world competition [Applause] i just wanted to share that today is a very special day march 21st is world down syndrome day every day people with down syndrome are breaking down barriers and defying stereotypes some of the most amazing humans that i have met and grown to love who also happen to have down syndrome exhibit positivity strength fortitude grace and ability far beyond what i could ever imagine i am hopeful for a day where we don't have to highlight those with intellectual disabilities and we are instead celebrating everyone's abilities thank you very much i wanted to offer uh congratulations to our community and to our oswego wildcats for their win at the special olympics state basketball competition i heard the athletes play amazing and had a lot of fun the wild cat silver team received a silver medal the wildcats junior team received a bronze medal and the skills athlete andrew cy received a silver medal sd 308 is so proud of all these students hard work commitment and teamwork and congratulations again [Applause] and you know we had a really really cool send-off for the kids all the employees at the district office along with all the employees from the pathways program lined the halls all the way all the way up and down and we just cheered for them and the kids were so happy and so excited it was just such a wonderful moment very good yeah that's awesome and a week or so ago we had read across america week and i had the honor of reading to a special ed class a fourth grade class in a first grade class at churchill so i just wanted to say thank you to churchill and thank you to sarah catherine cafarello for organizing it and inviting me to come in and read the students it's it's always a pleasure to get to see them and to see them light up when you read to them so thank you so much for that okay anyone else with any comments all right so then we'll jump to 2.6.2 board committee reports and we'll start with policy and legislation go ahead um uh we met on march 14th and we um acted as the parent teacher advisory council for student rights and responsibilities for the 22-23 school year the students rights and responsibilities document there was a presentation on bus safety and discipline for mr diarmand a presentation of behavioral intervention and special updates by dr hildebrand ms patterson summarized the administration administrative changes in the student handbook and the committee added feedback ms patterson also provided an overview on our law enforcement reciprocal reporting agreements our policy updates um with regard to policy for colon 60 purchases and contracts we did request that we change the dollar amount for purchases that need to go before the board for approval from 25 000 to 20 000 except in an emergency um policy for colon 6'5 the disposition of district property we talked about having a practice where the board is also communicated to where uh the just the district is disposing of property and we put that dollar amount around twenty thousand dollars as well we reviewed six colon 310 high school credit for non-district experiences course substitutions and re-entering students and we've asked the teaching and learning committee to please add the word accredited so that the programs that we give credit for are have some sort of accreditation around them finally seven colon third excuse me second to last seven colon thirty with student assignment and intra-district transfer residents we just had a very robust discussion around boundary changes and appropriate demographics socioeconomic um inclusion in when we were um making student assignment and intra district transfer requests and then finally we discussed a new policy eight colon six recording of iep proceedings um the committee just made some very minor changes we took out the word tape recording because obviously tape recording is not how it's done anymore and um that was the re that was the whole meeting it mostly centered around uh discussion of the updates to the student uh rights and responsibilities for next year i would could we also though could we send out to the whole board the dress code because we did get hung up a little bit on the new dress code policy but that kind of went around and around and around around and around so if and i know i don't feel like that often does i think you'll find it interesting but i totally forgot to ask you about that earlier so if you could send that out that would be amazing thank you ursula i'm gonna guess you guys will go around the same rounds we went i'm happy to skip that if you care to share you can just say yeah what they said okay lori i didn't hear you what did you say sorry about that i said i'm happy to skip having the same round and round that the policy committee had if she wants to just share what the policy committee went around and round about um it was in specifically in regards to student dress code um the policy has excuse me the rights and responsibilities is being updated to reflect that students should wear a top a bottom and shoes and we took out some references some references were suggested to be taken out that such as wearing a crop top or a shirt with spaghetti straps and some of that was in regards to student survey and information emails that we've received from students regarding um who that really affects and there was just discussion and difference of opinion about that that doesn't surprise me i'll just students if we're talking about this do you know have you guys covered much about student dress code in your work yet this year no not much not yet it wasn't it wasn't part of the scope yeah yeah it wasn't an initial issue brought up that was yeah that makes sense yeah it wasn't with the top issues right right right right okay but just out of mild curiosity go ahead yeah i mean like if we did happen to ask students what they thought about it i already know several students um who have very strong opinions about it um just like about like like you said who would really affect um who it's directed at who it helps things like that and there's so many i guess multifaceted aspects to it that i mean like if we ever did try to gain some information about that i think we'd get a lot of perspectives about it as well and we've had doctors dr sparrow you had your superintendent um um parent advisory committee well it was this one was the student student advisor okay and um we've had a couple of different um student um sessions around dress code and all of that so there is documentation out there over the last three years uh regarding what they feel and how they feel about the dress code so that can be pulled up well and and that's what i'm wondering did um that information feed into the concept of top bottom and shoes that's our understanding yeah they're was was it margaret that was on that committee somebody in our margarita yeah somebody in our meeting was i wasn't there talking about it i can't for the life of me right this second because we were we got stuck on the top bottom and shoes well we'll talk about we're not talking about the student handbook tonight right right no okay i would definitely be interested in more information on what feeds into the word choices and to make sure that if we're going to make changes toward choices that we are making positive changes rather than just different changes yeah well and that's what i'll be interested to learn more about all right anything more lady ladies no wrong sorry well give me a word give me a word that i would say doctor people all right um all right teaching and learning committee all right um we met on march 2nd similar to the last board meeting the committee was presented for with the recommendations for new elementary social studies and junior high math discussion occurred for the social social studies new curriculum shifts to inquiry and application um help students better transition to junior high in high school student voice was a big part of that curriculum it allows students to make choices in their inquiry in their projects this one of the things that uh the committee appreciated was a the rubik's rubrics are student friendly and easily adapted to allow for student choice while holding students accountable then there was the junior high math discussion was first and foremost we are picking math materials that align with the sd 308 math framework currently we purchase annual consumables and many teachers are creating their own materials the teacher committee agrees that we need to change so students can achieve the curriculum has 24 7 professional development tools which with each lesson modeled in a classroom video to show how show it in practice training on how to utilize new teaching techniques will be integral and it integrates well a couple other things that integrates with google classroom and students do not need to have internet to have it on their chromebook so those are um some of the things that were discussed and were considered positive about the new curriculum that was presented and that we haven't had new social studies curriculum since it's 21 years 2017 years okay sorry but that's not to say that every year they don't add their own and now we'll go on to 6.3 superintendent's report well good evening board the past two years have been a long and challenging ones on many different levels but with that said we've come through it and i believe we can be better and stronger for it now is the time to reconnect re-challenge ourselves and with a nude and renewed focus on safe inclusive schools climate and culture academic achievement finance and student voice as we work towards educating all students to reach their highest potential tonight the board is going to hear an update on our progress to envision 308 which you all know is our strategic plan one aspect of that plan is to have a balanced budget that works towards creating a 20 percent fund reserve so that we can end the long-standing practice of issuing annual tax anticipation warrants to end issuing debt service extension bonds for capital projects to begin allocating dollars to capital projects on an annual basis having an annual budget that includes a contingency and having a budget that includes the appropriate amount of dollars within each year's budget to continually update the curriculum and to provide the materials and resources that our students and our teachers need as their learning tools so as i've shared in the past this part's a little bit of a recap but in 2016 when i became superintendent we showed a do nothing scenario which meant uh we keep spending the way we were and uh if we did nothing spending at the same rate that in 2020 we not only would not have a fund balance we would have been 15 million dollars in the red so from 2016 through 2020 the board of education had to make a series of annual cuts that required difficult conversations and even more difficult decisions these were very hard conversations to have but they were needed conversations to get us to the point that we are currently at now as is and where we're at now is having projected fund balance of 25 million dollars at the end of 2022.

yes please join for us it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty because trump [Music] everyone for coming out tonight and those watching at home um appreciate it beautiful day so thanks for uh giving up your evening a little bit so give any we have our director of buildings and grounds dan polloway will update us on capitol projects and our athletic director steve diversity for athletics and activities thank you community members for coming on tonight thank you cea for joining us and we're looking forward to seeing the presentation from our instructional coaches [Music] all right we have one public comment this evening uh john kaneowicz one he said one okay sorry i didn't hear it it's not like you said none yeah you just have to hit the button hit the button on the mic thank you thank you i am definitely technologically challenged um hello my name is john kenneds i've been a resident of district 301 for 31 years and though now retired i was a public school educator for 39 years it is in regard to two issues that several people in our community have been discussing in public comments here that i would like to address my own comments this evening first critical race theory is not typically taught in public schools and it is not taught here of course we know that crt is really a code word used by those who stand in opposition to teaching about the fact that we haven't overcome racial discrimination in this country and that if we really want to live that professed reality that all persons are created equal we still have work to do the school code of illinois and the illinois learning standards determine what is taught in our schools regarding race and discrimination teaching black history teaching our students to recognize different racial groups and teaching students how to develop positive relationships with peers of different races are the major instructional requirements of the state of illinois in this regard these are laudable goals that everyone should want our students to learn to translate these requirements into what is taught in the classroom our district uses a curriculum coordinating process that involves teachers and administrators at all levels and at the board committee level parents as well the emphasis in this process is on balance finding an instructional path that does not emphasize any particular political perspective i am extremely impressed at the seriousness with which our district implements this complex process and i would encourage anyone who really wants to understand how all this works to request a meeting with district personnel so that it can be shared with you certainly instruction regarding race and discrimination is not done with the intention of making anyone feel guilty but black history includes white history and that combined history should not be whitewashed in a multicultural multi-racial society such as ours is important to learn from our past and our present for the benefit of everyone second school boards have historically been relatively immune from partisan politics most who run for school boards want to provide service to the children of their community and thereby to the community at large it is typical that not everyone on a school board is a parent of a child in the district in which they serve while parents certainly have the most immediate interest public schools serve the larger public good which is not limited solely to the current students and their families we all want good schools in our community and the fact that we all pay significant taxes to support our schools is tangible validation of the larger public good they serve as a long-standing member of this community who had three children receive a quality education here and who believes we have a great school district i believe it would be extremely harmful to our students and our community for the board to become dominated by those who want to push a partisan political agenda thank you for your time thank you thank you move on to action reports now we need motion second to discuss and approve the consent agenda your revenue and expenditure reports are in your ward packet revenues are currently at 42.53 compared to 48.51 a year ago expenditures are at 49.63 compared to 50.80 a year ago um the district received impact fees for 896.38 with 18 home starts transition fees came in at 9 000 305 and 2 cents the bills payable reports for both northern kane and central are are normal for the month of march thanks to any questions for us all right pam fog yes campfield yes nolan yes yes rabe yes a thief yes gorman yes uh next we have a resolution to dismiss part-time teachers i love to approve the resolution for the dismissal of part-time teachers julia baskin laroya campbell catherine collum christine gatto heckman sandra carreray stephanie henhub hennell and heidi williams at the end of the 2021-2020 school year a second [Applause] all right there's a resolution in our board packet um this is an annual thing this is an annual process that we go through for all part-time employees by law uh so basically we end up releasing them and many of these positions will be reposted tomorrow to hire back those individuals or individuals that were doing a great job with it so just a normal process any questions uh so this is uh i think maybe the first time uh that i've been a part of that so so could you just give me a little bit more background on like uh like why we do that the illinois school code requires that we release all part-time employees that are certified teachers so it's part of the legal law that they're released and then we bring them back as part of the resolution so okay thank you but they have to reapply correct they do reapply we post it they reapply and generally speaking we we're ready to go again tomorrow to repost them so we have them ready to go right back out tomorrow it's just a process we go go through for long thank you all right and pill yes nolan yes panera yes rabe yes a thief yes yes gorman yes um i moved to approve the resolution for the dismissal of first second or third year probationary teachers jenna gilardi allison gunther and brian michaels at the end of the 2021-2022 school year second now these uh this is a resolution for dismissal of these employees so these are employees that we are not asking back for next year uh so they're coming through as we do all first second and third year teachers together in one resolution because they're nine ten-year teachers and they go through a similar process for uh releasing with those three employees we are looking not to retain for next four years any questions and this process is done where they get a letter or form a letter they were notified at the evaluation when they met with their administration we'd not be bringing them back okay they then come forward for a board of approval and they don't get uh sp7 letter which kind of gives them their notification on where they've been what their senior rating is those elements they just don't receive that letter from us and these these decisions to dismiss these first second and third year probation that's based on performance yes correct exactly [Music] all right nolan yes yes ray yes a thief yes falk yes han pill yes gorman yes next we need a motion second to discuss and approve an optional savings plan that allows members of tier of trs to dedicate a portion of every paycheck to a 457b deferred plan it's all moved second so this resolution you see in front of you is coming from our legal council and talking to them this has been something that's been on the docket for well over a year i did not come forward last year because the teacher retirement system pushed it off as part of their benefit package they're now trying to have it be an a mandatory process that we actually withdraw for a kind of a 403 b through trs it currently is still in the process but if our legal counsel felt it was important to have this resolution come forward to the board of education if an employee who chose to take this savings plan from trs reached out to us we would have to deduct those payments from their check this resolution allows us to deduct that payment directly from their check we're still waiting there will be opt-out language for new employees that has not been put forward yet we believe that will go into effect for next school year but we haven't gotten clarification yet from trs if that's the case any new employee that would be hired for us we would automatically deduct a certain percentage that trs deems is what the responsibility is unless the employee that was being hired would opt out for our current employees who are not being hired by us brand new they would have the option to opt in and upon them opting in we would move forward based on having this resolution completed so that's the purpose of the resolution and there's no match it's just straight their contribution their contribution says i think they did it in attempt to tier two tier two has a not as rich of a program as what a tier one trs employee has so it's a way to supplement their income in addition to maybe the 403 b that we offer through the district that's great other questions thanks esther hurst yes rabe yes a thief yes bulk yes and pill yes nolan yes gorman yes next we need a motion in second to approve the annual ihsa membership for the 2022 to 2023 school year so moved second a memo is included in the board packet and athletic director diversity is here if there are any questions okay rabe yes the thief yes bulk yes cam hill yes nolan yes yes gorman yes all right next we need a motion second to discuss and approve the overnight trip for central wrestlers to compete the first annual ihsa girls state wrestling tournament in bloomington illinois so moved second very exciting memo is included in the board packet and athletic director diversity will update you on that state tournament meet um in his his later athletic and activities update the thief yes folk yes cam hill yes nolan yes yes rabe yes gorman yes motion second to discuss and approve delegating authority of grant applications to specific district employees second business manager fluke the memo is included in your board packet every year this is a new annual thing that we need to just basically read and approve you'll see all of our grants that we have some new grants were added and just updating the director or the department chair that's in charge of writing the grant and approving the assurances award you have both central and northern kings okay folk yes hand pill yes nolan yes yes rabe yes a thief yes gorman yes all right last night we have we need a motion second to discuss and approve the annual agreement with the fox valley vocational cooperative so mama was included in the board pacquiao we currently do not send any of our students to fox valley vocational but i continue to serve on the board of directors work with the other superintendents enhancing their programs down there looking for various dual credit opportunities if we would decide to sever this agreement i would need to provide notification by january 31st how long has it been since we've had kids there a couple years why would we three years i would say in three years uh i believe that it was this will be our third year this is our third year what's the incentive to keep the existing agreement um continue to look for potential partnerships both to the north and to the south but in talking with dr mongan we're questioning whether it's going to be whether there's a need to continue uh beyond this current agreement and this will be for the 22 23 school year correct yeah this is for going next year you want your right to give them a notification if we decide to withdraw um would give them january 20.

no what is it tell me what it is sepak spak excuse me thank you madeline thunberg [Applause] congratulations jacksonville rachel wallen congratulations ella wrigley congratulations coach jeremy walker coach ryan collier and coach angela taraskevich i checked before was that close all right well again congratulations this is uh no small task in order so congratulations on your state championship i know it takes great effort to be a state champion and great work and as much as the achievement of winning and success as we always discuss in these board meetings um the character that goes along with that of the individual means just as much to us so i know you guys perform academically you perform in your community you perform at schools at the school and you make your school corporation proud so thank you for doing that and congratulations again i'm going to ask mr walker to give some statements i know just a comment about this particular team and haven't been here before i know you're accustomed to this but also i'd like you to take a moment and just explain what the process of being a state champion is in the latin club and how do you how do you get there mr walker we're going to ask to ask you to step to the microphone if you would thank you we'll see if this works so the our state competition has a lot of different components to it and on the student side there are three separate sections there are academic tests graphic arts and creative arts so there are two different testing sessions and one of the keys to our success is we tell our students they have to take at least seven tests and the unofficial word is take as many as you can take and what they don't know going into it is that they will always stack up competitively against the rest of the state because with ms terescavich teaching first and second year me teaching third year mr collier teaching ap i know that they're getting quality instruction in all aspects of the ancient world through all four years they don't always know that because they have their own little world and until they get out there and start competing against others then they realize that that they're getting some top-notch education here in crown point the other thing because we know that convention will mean more to them if they're if they have you know some skin in the game we asked them to do so many graphic arts or so many creative arts there's a mixture of them and so they brought some of the graphic arts with them today it's any of the artwork you go hold those up and show them some of your amazing things um this bow is out of pvc in case you were like wondering how amazing that was it looks like wood that's a that's melted pvc that is made um it is astounded me since we did our individual meetings on that um and gracie how did that place this was first yeah yeah no um i can't handle pvc piping right i yeah um and then the other competition is creative arts and i won't put anyone on the spot and say go ahead and do your performance but they they do latin speeches they do acting in latin anything that you might find in a speech and debate or thea theater program is here but in the latin world um either in latin or around themes of the ancient world and so they take all these competitions they practice they meet individually with mr terescavich and i to prepare and get some more coaching and then we do one last show and tell the wednesday before we go and compete and they get to show off and see amazing things like that and then when there's project viewing at convention they get to see you know wow we had a lot of these top three stickers on our projects so for the top five placings in any of those individual competitions we get sweepstakes points we also get points for our chapter entries like our t-shirt and the t-shirt contest the scrapbook that they do our service project that we've done all year long and all of our other activities that we do through the year and the students actually help put together those applications those portfolios so they're the ones really responsible for getting those chapter results when you add that all together that's what puts us into first place and tends to do it year after year after year different people different group but the expectation is be involved do your best and every year the new group of students rides the bar we never know whether it's going to hit it or not especially after covid things have been a little rough our numbers are a little smaller but 18 students went from crown point and managed to outscore schools with 31 and numbers like that because they believe that they're going to do it they should do their best so we're very proud of them with all that they've done and all that they've achieved and i hope that they had a fantastic time doing it i know they did because i saw their faces i saw them talking to their friends from around the state it's one of the best things i do um is getting to take them to this and other competitions and seeing them meet other people like them around the state nation thank you well i hope i didn't reveal some trade secrets there that continue your success by asking you to explain your successes but congratulations uh principal martinek do you want to have a word yeah i'd love to i just want to thank coach walker coach and coach come up to the microphone please i'd like to thank coach walker coach terescavich and coach collier for their effort with our students and one thing about our coaches is that they're very active in the state latin association they're one of their they're on the all the boards they're very active as far as making latin a positive experience not only for our students but for students across the state of indiana and of course they've managed to create the most dominant program in the state of indiana right here in crown point which we're very happy about so thank you to our coaches for all of your efforts now i want to get to the students so i was i want to let everybody know that back in february we hosted a latin regional competition and uh i it was at our school and and i felt like you know what i really want to go watch our latin club compete here because i had never been to a latin club competition and i was amazed at what i was able to see there and it was it kind of just was i wanted to share with you guys so imagine a uh for those here that never been to one what i saw was almost like a game show kind of like a of a theater sort of where you had you had a moderator in the front like i'm standing here then you had a crown point team and then you had another team like uh one of our adversaries was sitting another team was sitting at a different table and there was in what i what i witnessed was uh the the moderator asking three types of questions one was just about the language okay like a series of questions about the latin language for instance uh how to conjugate a verb in latin which of course isn't an easy thing but these guys knew it just no problem boom they were just on it you know answering these questions about the language so i'm thinking to myself wow that's impressive right yeah this is first time i've ever seen this but they're just and they use sort of like a buzzer all right so they would ask a question and me and they'd get the answer and then they would be able like three people on a team could talk with each other and come up with the final answer well then they would ask about the classic stories okay so think like the iliad and the odyssey and all these different classic stories about the characters and the plot and what exactly happened in these stories and these kids were just unbelievable and just beep i know this and these these complicated names and the stories and and the plots that go into this so now i'm really impressed and thinking wow not only know the language but they know these classic stories like the back of their hand this is really quite incredible and so then and i'm sitting in the back just watching and seeing how our students perform then they actually talked about ancient greek and roman history and some of the actual k you know the emperors and the different philosophers and all the things that go into the classic world and they would ask them questions about that and our kids
