achievement gap we have summer school scheduled for june 6 through june 24th parent conferences are this week on wednesday so teachers will have permission snips for students to attend summer school which will be academic and enrichment support this summer so parents look out for that gifted education progress so um we have 20 students completed in their evaluations or gifted ed six students are in the process of the evaluation early results dictate that six score evaluations two students will likely qualify as gifted learners this week with scores in the 94th percentile our district has decided to serve all students from the 94th percentile in accordance with ade recommendations we ordered second grade screeners that came in today we have 60 paper pencil and 75 online screeners so we are going to screen all of our second graders for gifted ed and hopefully we'll have some early students who will qualify for services um ade requirement for gifted education scope and sequence is due for board approval and ms stacy i'm shaffer bertram will be submitting the draft for review in april another announcement and updates is our ela adoption is in progress so parents the curriculum is below grade level or students who are getting d's and f's primarily but it's open to everyone uh we really need to have a discussion on how do we better support our students and families in closing the achievement gap so collectively with along with our board and our admin team and teachers and our parents hopefully we can do some out of the box brainstorming on what we can do to help our students reach their academic goals and as you saw the guinness record the largest letter envelope and stamp assembly we had today school spirit at its best um thank you again to mr kuru papariz the month congratulations you can take a picture of your children you can come up to it this time and then we're going to ask them to just stay up here after the picture so we can do our staff um hey where you are so we are going to be awarding we do the golden horseshoe award for our staff members and this golden horseshoe award we're going to be presenting to a teacher it's her first year teaching here but before she was a teacher in the classroom she was a monitor a playground monitor for our students she's built so much strong relationships with students and staff last year she called a local news station because we have an angel tree up for our radio station in angel tree and she was noticing that there was a lot of donations that were still needed on the tree and the radio station ended up that she contacted and told them you know her wish was to get help with that and they ended up taking all of the angels off that tree and donating so much to our school and then this school here she not only took on a grade she's never taught before but she did it with such ease she's a natural and again just built great rapport with her students with her colleagues with their staff and then when the holiday season came around she made a competition with her family to see who could buy the most gifts for the students here that were on the angel tree she has one of the biggest kindest hearts here on our staff and we're very lucky and grateful to have her so this is for jeanette mills a few things as well here in our continental family we we have a saying that we hold near and dear to our heart and it's once a cold always a cold and we truly do mean that if you go to continental school for one day or for a year or for 25 years um jeannette decided she was actually going to college while she was being a lunch monitor um and for something else and she decided she loved it here working with kids so much and that just speaks volumes to her dedication where she after getting the degree changed and went back to school so that she could continue working with our continental kids here and so the highest praise i can ever give anybody is once a cold always a cool and we're really glad to have you this morning we didn't mention that she's also a great baker so she bakes our cakes and cookies and everything that we need so i don't know how you find time jeanette but thank you so so much we really appreciate you [Applause] kids let's have you scoot down and kind of come around cheers which so with that that's always the best part of the meeting so with that everybody's welcome to stay and go through the rest of the agenda or you're free to take a slice of pizza and visit us another time we'll take a little break yes oh um is all right with that we'll move on to the consent agenda where there's half a dozen or so items on there and with that we would entertain a motion to approve the consent any discussion on the consent agenda i have one question about your number nine zero three one page three there's a reference to a forty four thousand dollar 287 uh dollar expenditure for the upload learning area this was charged to the yes or two fund account um and i just strictly coming from the discussion on the audit especially in the contingent liability area um and and any potential exposure that we might have in that area uh you know i just looked at uh today online as far as the authorized expenditures under ester tube funds and refers to accelerating learning recovery addressing the social and emotional well-being of students and staff re-engaging students and families who are disconnected from the k-12 education system and supporting educator access to real-time data to implement personalized construction these are some of them you have a extremely high confidence level that that this expenditure charge to us or two funds is an eligible expenditure for the outdoor learning area it is it is um it's helping with their social emotional by providing a shaded gathering place it is also providing an area for outdoor learning because it will have the seating so that people will be able to use that outdoor area to provide a differentiated instruction so yes it does fall underneath that subject thank you any other discussion take that to a uh welcome okay mrs allen yes mrs heist yeah mr mcgivern yes mr allering yeah all right we will move on to our report items section first up is uh our district finance route yes or so today you have your your monthly district financial report as well as your budget for this actual that you had uh requested a few meetings back so i'll open it up with the board for any questions or just go ahead and approve it i'll move to accept the district financial report second any discussion yes i have a few questions but i'll prefer anybody else who has them okay on the district financial report under mno support services functions dollars of a 328.000 budget balance in that area could you explain uh we have very little in salaries but in support services functions we've got 328 000 budget balance which to me is unexpected and available to be spent correct um right now it's not attached to anything um it's there to be moved into doing races in different areas so it's just sitting there waiting to be used i'm just saying when we're when we're starting to look at the 2223 budget and we look at actual expenditures versus budget expenditures we're going to say why do we need so much money in this area and we haven't spent 90 percent of what was budgeting i will tell you yes okay so you already proved it it was in the consent agenda the raises so you in within consent gender you approved a five percent raise for all of our salaried staff and we've also approved a 65-cent an hour raise for all of our hourly staff who did not get the annual minimum wage increase which was 65 cents those employees that did get a partial of that so if somebody only got a 55 raise to get them to the new minimum wage they are going to get another dime on top of that so that they receive the whole 65 cents and that addresses the uh the compression within ourselves okay so where was that five percent listed on the item i understand it was in the consented agenda yes okay under the rationale okay maybe i'm not seeing it it's kind of cut off on one side it's emf certified classified administrative staff pay increase for fiscal year 22 right before the ratification of vouchers so that cuts that surplus down to 180 000 right yes it cuts it down yes okay um second question i have is in the food service uh under the line item property we have a 210 000 budget balance out of a budget of 241 000 which tells me we've only spent 31 000 out of 241 budgeted for what is food service property number one and why such a significant unexpended uh balance because right now we are still debating on whether we need to buy new stoves from the weapons and i don't know if you've looked at commercial ovens they run about 180 to 200 000 so that's why that money is sitting there wouldn't that be a capital expenditure it's different for food service food service spends their own money on their own things okay and that you can't get from that state maintenance no absolutely not all right any other discussion but we will discuss them later on in the program okay i guess we'll have a roll call on the financial report mrs allen yes mrs paise yes mr mcgivern yes mr ellery yes and mrs the unfinished business who could get looks like an update on the bond refi so here is the transaction summary for the bond refunding or refinancing um we do have a private bank who purchased our bonds it will be foothills bank who is a subsidiary or a division of glacier bank the closing on this will be april 14th and and then you will see the net present value savings over the course of the payback we will be saving our taxpayers one million thirty three thousand four hundred and sixty two dollars by doing this uh three flags can you scroll up the other way a little bit so it looks like you got the rates while the rates were getting good we got rates locked in what is the coupon i mean does it range between these two uh percentages depending on the bond that was refinanced or it's it's gonna range between the 165 and the 2.37 coming down from roughly five six percent right uh i think the highest was four and a half excellent yeah let's still so yes that's there is some good news so we're taxpayers to be able to save a million dollars over the next 10 years nine years after that gets closed i hope we get like a nice press release inside we've already sent out a press release piper sandler sent out the press release as well well let me rephrase piper salary set down to press we just okay [Music] just three values cool and discussion on the district goals so again um as mentioned in our meeting since we are about to redo our needs assessment and our priorities and action steps will change for the state for the school plan and the district plan we are going to continue to work in its work on this document so that we can have it ready to be approved to start the august school year so rather than continue to work on this year's plan we're going to wait to make the changes in we are going to address it during our june board retreat so we can have something for approval in july [Music] okay so this is in response to our most recent audit um i take full responsibility i did not know i needed to have more approval to send things to public auction so this is in response to the findings that we have one of them um so before you use a list of items that are going before the public surplus those are the asset tags that were attached to those items and i'll be more than happy to ask any answer any questions on those items if you have any only then in the future can we have it type so we can almost read what this equipment is i hardly could do it even looking at my screen at home sir you're scrutinizing my handwriting abilities yeah maybe you're just trying to buy the salad bar for yourself to type it for you i don't need it type right now but rather dispose of please take it back to send the items listed to public auction triples auction second discussion [Music] mrs allen yes mrs keith yes mr mcgivern yes ms johnson yeah and mr astrology yes okay now time for item b the district spending report so this is a report that's put out annually by the auditor general's office um i'd like to be able to go group with the board in the public forum that way everybody can see what it is that we spend how we spend our money last year in this market you just scroll down just a touch okay right there and you click on where it says district demographic information so this is just um the basic information about our district saying that we're in pima county that we're an operational peer group 10 that we're in legislative districts two and four that we are a rural school with one location we don't deal with graduation rates because we are not in high school he gave the number of students attending and their size they gave the five-year change in students attending is a nine percent increase so i'm guessing three four five years ago we had quite the amount of students um our special education population out of the 567 students was 13 our ell population out of the 567 was three percent and our our students at or below the poverty rate of 2020 was at nine percent so if you scroll down a little bit more for me let me show that whole little graph okay so what you see here is what we actually spent in the classroom so when the under general's office says your classroom's bending they are looking at just the instructional portions so we spent 54.9 percent of our money within the educational side but if you look at total classrooms planning our student support and our instructional support we spent 65.2 percent of our of our funding within the classroom which left 34.8 dealing with administration plant operations food service and transportation scroll down please yes there's a historical trend as to how we have spent our money in the past um you can compare it to last year we're just 0.6 higher than last year the highest that we've been was in 2009 where we spent 62.8 and in 2015 was our lowest year where we spent 53.2 scroll down and they break down this report so this is different than you've seen in previous years so the graph on the left is showing you how much the percentages have changed over the course of um versus last year or i'm sorry this is the 2016 spending five-year trend so over the last five years let's go back just a little bit you can see that instruction has gone up 0.2 student support one point one percent an instructional point one point four percent um non-classroom spending has gone down two point seven which was a reduction of one point one percent in administration one point three percent plant food service remained flat and transportation was down 0.3 let's scroll up so this is how we rate against our peers our spending per pupil our peer average was 1 365 um we spent 1 240 and the state average was 1041. so we're above the state average but the lower pier average um our plant operations this is how much we spent within our facilities within the first by square footage we spent five dollars and 21 cents per square foot our peers spent seven and the statewide average for our for this report is 684.
some of those courses we suggest canceling we want to move to cancel based primarily on enrollment and other courses we would like to run as you may note from the courses that were submitted we actually do have a decrease in the number of courses that we're recommending canceling which is a good sign nearly half and just a slight increase in courses that have an enrollment of less than 20 but we would like to run next year a lot of decisions are made based on not just the courses and the number of students but what opportunities those afford our students whether they're in a pathway whether they're programmatic or part of a program and those are really difficult decisions that ryan and georgia really work through to support our students so we see in on the one hand a decrease in the number that we are recommending for cancellation and a slight increase in those that we're recommending for approval all right so here we go uh so you know it's funny that the student was talking a lot about uh career opportunities in high school um and that's what we're kicking off with uh so um i wanted i think the student left but i wanna uh connect with her so we can talk to her about internship uh so internship is a course where students uh go they have a workplace um and they're working to check out a career i was fortunate enough able to go with larry baca one of our internship people to on-site and on the way there he was talking about a student who wanted to become a doctor and then went through internship realized i do not want to become a doctor and started um and i think he went into like videography slash where it meets up with uh like marketing um which he never would have known um before going into internship and you know saving the family like lots of career changes and all that kind of stuff um and the cost of that in college but i will i will find that student later um so we are running an additional section of intro to teaching itself um so um they're moving up from two sections or from one section of two sections that's a dual credit class and it's also a part of our educational pathway um at both north and south we're running an additional section of business incubator hopefully we'll see everyone at the pitch later this year and on top of that we're stacking accelerator that's the follow-up class to incubator and so in each of one of the sections accelerator will also run and we're excited at north our intro to culinary classes has increased 175 students that's not just a hundred and sixty-five that's on top of the 200 that we normally have in that class um and so um we are finding creative ways on having 16 sections of intro to culinary but you know the students are excited it's right outside the cafeteria the facility looks beautiful um and so kids are excited and again like i mentioned before internship we've increased a section at north i think we're wondering about the impact of the master facility [Laughter] we're also running environmental sustainability it's a new course that was approved this fall we're running on both campuses and so as we're looking at careers in cte we're also increasing our classes for careers in science and human body systems is running on both sides of town and the prerequisite for that course of principles of biomedical science is also very popular on both sides of town and at north we rebounded our ap physics c numbers last year during covet i think students were concerned about taking an overload in that environment so our numbers dropped in half last year and they've rebounded to where they were prior to the pandemic so we're excited about that in the area of english just a couple of things we are up in um ap language that course kind of michelle davis who was just speaking with you is one of the teachers of ap language um and ap lang and ap lit kind of ebb and flow a little bit and but next year ap lang is going back up it's always been really healthy on both sides of town we run for the senior english experience a lot of electives so the freshman sophomore juniors they pretty much take english one two three or the honors track with ap lang but then at the senior level they get a lot of choices and they get to pick two semesters for the most part um and so sometimes they pull off of each other and we have to cancel one or two but next year at north for the first time in a while we're actually running all of the senior english electives which is a really nice opportunity to be able to give to students another outgrowth probably of the master facility plan is that on both sides of town in the area of fine arts both jewelry and ceramics have jumped significantly for next year obviously all of those spaces are new and especially the jewelry area is is much more developed i guess i would say than it was before and so both of those programs are doing really well and at north actually they're needing to add some staff part of their addition is in the area of visual arts we had gone up a little bit in previous years and so ours is sustaining at the same rate but they're going up and then we will be running music theory for the first time ap in a while and that's one of the things that was on the under 20 list but i just was meeting with that teacher today so she's gearing up for her ap workshop and stuff to to get back into that so that's exciting and earlier uh support for students also came up and so just to highlight some things that we're doing to support students specifically for our language learners we are adding um an el math one for our language learners at north and with that outgrowth this will be the next year will be the first year that we're supporting all of our language learners in every graduation requirement at north um so we are excited about that um and then also in special services uh we've been working on making sure that as students grow and they're learning their skills that we appropriately decrease the supports that they're getting in class because that's our goal um not for them to become dependent on supports but to become more independent as they go through school um and so um through the work on both sides of town we've actually reduced the number of students who need supports in our self-contained class which will then shows a slight growth in our less restrictive environment in our co-taught sections so and then finally in world language at south we're up a section of french and french remains you know it stayed really healthy and going back several years pre-pandemic we had some different cuts in some of our languages at the middle school and junior high level so you always have to keep an eye on those languages especially other than spanish and so we're really excited that that's gone up we are running ap german next year on the under 20.
can you share information on why 20 000 was chosen as opposed to say 10. oh we talked all the way down to five i'm sure you did that's why i was like the board of education does not have that much time to do go all the way down to five i was still mad about the buses right so that's why i'm asking did she answer it for you no no i i get that you probably did i just don't i don't understand i guess what i'm looking for is clarification on because we don't have time at five definitely but um we've had conversations at so many different levels for so many years that i'm curious how 20 was settled upon what was the deciding factor at 20 we thought we'd try 20 and then if we needed to lower it to 15 we would that is a reason and same with disposition as well that we'd like to know if we're getting rid of huge assets well and that's the next thing is how are we valuing the used assets when we dispose of them because if you start to get into what could qualify as twenty thousand theoretically an entire school district's worth of old textbooks might not currently be valued at the market value of twenty thousand they might be valued at ten dollars but it will just be a memo to the board that says this is what's being disposed of so it's it's just like oh and then ali provided a very specific situation that happened that right um she would have liked to know that that was because it affects others definitely i totally agree down the road right just got rid of something so i'm just questioning how are we asking them to value the disposal this disposed property are we doing it at like an appreciated value or uh because to me if if i were no longer going to use like my phone my phone is now worth zero dollars however what we intend is when i replace this phone it's going to be a thousand dollars right or whatever it is next time but um to me then getting rid of this phone is going to cost me a thousand dollars so i was wondering if because i think that that was the intent you were getting to is yeah we didn't get it in policy we assumed that we could trust the administration to understand that we were trying to discourage the totally agree but if we can settle on how that is it could be a potential way to avoid a misstep in miscommunicating well i mean technically we valued it at ten dollars because we couldn't sell it for ten dollars versus we're going to have to spend 20 000 to replace that would be more procedure than policy but would it i don't know well it's replacement value that's that's uh yeah that's a common term replacement value market value depreciated value we just need to settle on one of those names when we're getting rid of say a certain year of chromebooks what is the i mean those are least so that's a terrible example but what when you do when you are doing that what is the disposition value with the depreciation value how do you how would you market in your books would you mark it as the cost to replace or the fair market value of that actual item i think it depends on the resource uh what we're looking at because you're right in some cases a five-year-old chromebook if you look at what we paid for it five years ago it was worth three hundred dollars but now that five-year-old chromebook doesn't work it can't support the operating system it's useless so you're right there is a replacement cost which i would consider a refresh cost that's kind of the balance that you guys are talking about is what what is that balance between acquiring a resource and then depreciating it and then it's in its life cycle getting rid of it i think you need both right we can think back to committee yeah let's yeah let's talk more about that elsewhere but yeah i can i think i think i know what i i remember the circumstance you're speaking of i think i understand if i remember correctly it was about vans i think you need both i think in every situation we have to do both no matter what we have because there are some instances where you may not reply i don't care no i totally agree with you what i'm saying is this doesn't say which one they should use as the kind of gatekeeper to where they will put it on the list what makes it put on the list which one of those yeah because we're talking about dollar spent i would say replacement failure would be i would think so as well yeah that's kind of the point yeah because you're looking at future expenditures basically we can we can pull it take it back to committee got it but i think it i think it almost needs to have both because think about it and i know we can keep going but it's it's an asset that's yeah you're disposing of an accident that has value yeah that has value then we want to know that as well can you tell who other people are that like the number yeah so you guys want replacement value and and appreciate it yes and that's on policy it is on policy for colon 60.
high school would start at eight o'clock so eliminate one time to shift them so we eliminate one route in the morning we actually eliminate one route so we're consolidating middle school and high school at the end of the day correct now is there an additional late bus or early bus no we're not looking at any early at this time earlier because we really want teachers to have that plan time to be able to do what they need to do or collaborate if they so desire lunch is it always that lunch is this way but those two lunches split up throughout here very simple this is not the real schedule this was just showing you a sample so i made it really easy for you to see lunch is not stagnant yeah it's still cold it will be a lunch though at 9 46. there will be a lunch early i think it's it might be 9 46 it's those are lunch but it might be ten ish so yeah it's always an early election i moved it called breakfast [Laughter] it's brunch see their mimosas other questions thanks for letting this out this is what you it obviously uh obviously information are we gonna vote on this we are not looking for voteless you're gonna say it doesn't uh it's really just information for you so you understand what we're doing next year in case there was questions that we need to take back this is the other piece yes this is actionable the credits requirements i'm sorry graduation the graduate crimes will come forward they're going to be moved to 20.5 that would be informational coming back next year or next month sorry to be voting yes 20 we're going from 23.5 to 20.5 how does that compare with the surrounding areas it depends some districts have more saint charles has more uh we have two districts that are similar to crystal lake in geneva both have 20.5 the reality is our students are generally going to do more than that anyway um i think that we just want to make sure that we can get our kids the best education we can get them make sure they're successful uh we're six at four it's 24 hours so it's there's plenty of space for students to get way beyond that it's just that it's we're not making mandatory and it makes it easier for some of our students who are struggling through high school or having some other elements of you know hospitalizations which we're seeing on the rise some of those challenges for some of our youth to help them families to help them uh manage in a more productive way to get them to get a high school diploma how does this change uh enroll well not enrollment but class selection for next year so like eighth graders they've made their selections already they've made their selections counselors are meeting with all of them to let them know that they're going from seven to six which would they like as their first choice uh we'll still try to do first second choice trying to get them the choice they want freshmen and sophomores are pretty locked in anyway they don't have a lot of movement based on the mandatory courses they have to take really a lot more choices come at the 11th and 12th grade level but each counselor is meeting with each of those students to re-talk through those options so it's the council going over to the middle school yep i think they are going back over the middle school so if they have seven now they can maintain that organ and not be asking that question so at the next board meeting they'll be uh something to actually vote on in terms of changing the graduation requirements and so i um to think about this okay thank you all right next we have an athletics and activities update all right it's kind of lengthy because i'm going to cover quite a bit so it's all good stuff so i'm sure i won't lose anybody along the way last time i was here we were kind of getting ready for the postseason of winner and we'll we'll kick things off with girls basketball uh they finish the season with you know with a record of 23 10 and 10.
currently we've not identified that a calendar for 2024 for that spring break uh tentatively just looking at where it possibly would land we're looking at somewhere between march 23rd uh march 31st once we identify the calendar this this trip will uh to any student that meets the criteria that are listed there will be traveling to uh to spain spending approximately eight days with in 10 days total with travel one thing that we did add this year uh with the the cost if you recall as covid hit and we had some issues and things as far as getting refunds we did go with a global plan plus that would then guarantee refunding up to 24 hours of any type of cancellation so that's included in the cost this year seeking your approval for this out of country field trip to spain thank you mr harperman for the recommendation to prove the out-of-country field trip for the crown point high school students to travel to spain during spring break of 2024.
and obviously diane did not give me that number now i did it in my head any further discussions fair enough all in favor raise your hand most quests and the retention bonus out of the essence i've submitted my application for s or 3 funds i'm sure it will be returned they seem to be returning virtually everyone they get but we still have sr2 funds uh at this time i feel like we can afford to give a thousand dollars to all district employees clarification that's classified classified certified um not specially just i need to say that and i'm in favor of it but uh i'm disappointed some of the staff on the pushback that we got earlier in the year on the steering committee about not working more together to work with the scheduling and sharing of staff and so forth someone that would be public but i'm in favor of the voters any further discussion hear none all in favor of your hand motion passes and superintendent well i only have two short ones legislative update it's the time of the year when they're throwing about anything against the wall to see what will stick yeah you should have a document a two-sided document at your place um we have senate bill 496 which is the parents bill of rights it lists 12 parental rights that are required and required local policies require us to list academic learning material activities curriculum state curriculum standards social emotional library materials and that and how to inspect materials you know any parent in in our district or in any district around the state i would hope uh could would feel free to contact their public principal their classroom child's classroom teacher and get any of that information uh this sets this arbitrary date that it's got to be on your website don't really feel like it is a necessary need senate bill 455 would require school districts to determine the number of non-resident students that would be allowed to transfer into their school district the transfers would be required providing there is capacity starting in the fall of 2023 again that's the go to whatever district you want to go to which there's a lot of issues with that as far as loading sports teams to just any numer any numerous uh issues another one they're working on is assessment taxation uh recommended approval of senate bill which says any public teachers hired after july 1st 2024 would no longer be under the capers retirement plan would be would instead have to participate in a thrift savings plan like 401k uh capers has run numbers on this and they said that it would actually cost the state and school districts up to a billion dollars more as they went through this if they didn't continue with capers so again let's throw it against everything against the wall and see what sticks they're wanting to put some money a hundred thousand dollars in the statewide dyslexia coordinator a hundred thousand dollars into communities and schools grants add 5 million to restore the school safety security grant those are that's great we have that money for a few years and we used it for locks on doors the only downside to that money is you have to match it with your own money so if you get fifty thousand dollars and you wanna spend fifty thousand dollars on improving the safety of something uh it costs you twenty five thousand got to match the funds so they did not want to help provide transportation for students in career and tech ed three million dollars for student mental health four million uh this is interesting four million to be provided by the statewide implementation of math nation program for supplemental math services for grades 7 through 12.
i'm excited about 6.2 yes i share your excitement [Applause] any other comments or questions okay here you know can we have a roll call please miss the ball yes yes motion carries [Applause] resolve that the superintendent recommends for approval the resolutions as outlined in personnel resolutions under middle and elementary schools is 7.2 through 7.9 i have a motion motion any discussion i just want to acknowledge mrs gloria alfaro who's going to be retiring after a significant amount of service in the district and thank her for her service any other comments or questions hearing none can we have a roll call please mr bob yes miss casino yes miss lima of spain mr minhas yes yes we are now on to item number eight point one resolved at the boundary board of education approves the resolutions as outlined in education resolutions under district and high school this is 8.2 through 8.4 i have a motion motion thank you mr bell second second thank you ms casino just that i love all three of these these are all all three items are great absolutely happy to see all three and if they need chaperones for six flags let me know i will gladly participate all right can we have a roll call please mr bell yes miss casino yes miss lima yes minhas yes miss musson yes mr januzzi yes we are up to 9.1 resolved at the boundary board of education approves the resolutions and outlined in education resolutions under middle and elementary schools this is 9.2 through 9.7 i have a motion motion thank you mr bell a second second thank you ms casino discussion um when i read the agenda my little gun was very excited about the dinosaur presentation so i wouldn't who wouldn't be absolutely it's great and i said did you know about this and he said yes i said they told you at school and he said no you just told me now and if that ain't kindergarten okay can we have a roll call please mr pal yes [Music] yes we are now up to item 10.1 resolve that the boundary board of education approves the resolutions as outlined in financial resolutions this is 10.2 through 10.14.
um this one is the probably the most alarming piece on this report our cost per meal we spend four dollars and 44 cents per meal our peer average is at 360 and the state averages at 354 so we're 90 cents higher than the state average okay it's scrolling down within our transportation um it doesn't relate towards anything else any other we're not categorized against a peer for this one our district average was 329 spending per mile per student and the state average was 7.22 oh i'm sorry that was spending per mile spending for for student was 1825 versus the state after 28.62 when we come down and we look at our average salaries for our teachers the dotted line at the top is the state average for our teachers the line just below that is the district average and then on the bottom is our prop 301 monies that we give our teachers so if you look at 2018 we are like right there with the state average if you when you include our our 301 money and the teacher salaries and you can say the same thing for 2017 2019 we're about two grand below 2020 we are 5000 below and then we've closed that gap in 21.
that's one of the courses that i probably come every two or three years and that happens to be on the under 20 and then it'll jump back up a little bit we don't have feeder program at all anymore for germans so they all start with in the buildings so that means that it's a little bit harder to get those numbers up but because we obviously do not want to stop students from finishing that fourth year of the sequence because a lot of them use the four-year sequence to not pay for language courses in college we want to give them the chance to finish that sequence and then you'll probably some of you remember that a couple years ago we kind of got our heritage speaker class spanish class back up and running and next year we'll continue to be able to run both levels of that course on at south um it i think it's one of those courses that's going to ebb and flow at north it ran this year and probably the first year you always run a little bit more because all the grades can kind of funnel in and then once they have the chance to take it um then you have kind of a lull sometimes for a year but we're excited that that's continuing to do well all right that's all right um you've heard most of it already with the t-99 social worker um is a 1.0 and our student success coordinators but um the memo that i had kind of breaks down uh north has the 0.2 increase like ryan was mentioning both schools are working on moving students into more inclusive and mainstream environment south just due to enrollment the number went down 1.6 fte and then obviously the 299 increase for social work we've always had a little bit of social work support our student population has grown a lot in the last few years but we've never increased social work there so that's why we're you know asking for the 1.0 but overall in special services for we're down a 0.4 fte and then in c triple s is where we've put the student success coordinators both at north and south if you recall they were paid this year on the grant and we'll use local funds to cover them for this coming school year all right good evening everybody and i'll be chatting a little bit with you about the dismissals and uh renewals for next year uh the first part of the our example or um article i should say that i share with you has uh the honorable dismissals and that's eight teachers across the district this year those are all teachers in current part-time fte positions who we will not have equivalent fte for them next year but we do have uh intentions to bring them back uh at a different fte next year so that's why their honorable missiles are planning to return them next year next group is for just just dismissals those are teachers that are in situations where they took over later in the year typically for leaves of absences and so someone else is returning next year to take back over the position that they maybe had vacated so those individuals then we don't have a place for them for next year so i believe there's uh seriously four of those individuals for next year um then there's a very lengthy list of names broken down by year that follows that part of my uh report and that includes all these teachers in various years here of their non-tenure status who are being recommended for renewal and upon your approval of that i'll be visiting with those teachers later on to have them sign their contracts which i'm sure they will be very excited about that and then in addition to the articles there as well are the exhibits and the resolutions related to those actions so the copies of letters those staff members will receive as well as just some formal documents that you know make the process rounded out and official for everyone so thank you okay that's all of it what questions do you have well i have one question um okay about the curriculum um of course is recommended for cancellation we're getting rid of managerial accounting honors at north and we're adding managerial accounting non-honors at south is there any thought in the future if we have enough students who are interested where we would somehow like even if one side of one side of town remoted in for the class so that we could offer more yeah yeah i mean we we do talk about that especially i think more so now than we ever used to in the past now that we've done more things online and um it's just a little bit more complicated than it sounds we used to when i was world language chair you know i don't remember 15 16 years ago for several years that's how we would run french five and spanish five we had what we call the digital learning room in each building they had these giant tvs and kids would sit in there and the kids at the other school would be up on the screen and the teacher would be in one building and we would pony papers back and forth then you know because that's what we did literally it came in the pony and um but you still have to have an adult in there supervising the students who are in there there's like a lot of logistical pieces and um kids i think you know back then they it was something totally strange to them to do so getting kids to really buy in and get you know engage in it was sometimes difficult much more difficult and more difficult for the teachers i think we would be it might be something worth trying down the road i think this year anytime you mention anything virtual or online kids are like oh no no no but i think that's a really valid question and we talk every year about that option about traveling about you know different things like that the traveling's really hard because you have to have the transportation and you have to give up an extra period of your day but we gina and ryan and i regularly talk about those types of options and whether or not we should try to offer them for various things so i think it's it's a good question thank you thank you thank you thank you all right uh so over the course of this year when we you know we talk about you just heard about strategic planning and goal setting one of the things that we talked about in our administrative goal planning for this year was coming off of the pandemic and knowing that there was an increase of failures was responding to those but also continuing down our pathway of just trying to eliminate as many failures as possible not by lowering standards but by increasing support and georgia and ryan kind of were tasked with it not kind of we're tasked with this this year so i thought it'd be appropriate at this point as we're talking about both strategic planning and our staffing and everything else at this point of the year for them to share uh some of what we've done this year all right um so let let me begin on the behalf of both ryan and i by saying this we're here representing 400 people in the building that actually did the heavy lifting on this um so yes we are going to talk about what how we tried to lead some of the process but really is the department chairs and the classroom teachers that have really done the lion's share of the work to make this happen so we feel like you know the other 400 people are represented here with us tonight so every year we get data um on what we call freshmen on track so the state shares with us how what percent of our freshmen are on track and the state defines that as you earned as a freshman you earned at least five credits and you basically passed all of your core classes you could fail one semester of a core but that's it so if you happen to fail freshman math the whole year or global connections or english etc then you're not on track even if you if you pass i you can't pass all the cores i don't think without earning five credits it would be tough but you still you have to have five credits as well so um district 99 both schools historically have a high rate of freshmen being on track but we know how important the freshman year is so any freshman who's not on track is something that we want to be concerned with and it will come as no surprise to most of you probably that after last year when we got our numbers they they had gone down we did not have as high of numbers of freshmen on track so as hank said we started looking at that ryan and i broke down some of the data we took gina's office gets all of that specific information from the state so we took that um and we looked at it we shared it with our leadership teams in an effort to really try to make that a focus of our work this year so on this slide you'll see some information from both buildings and when the state sent us our information at south last year we're on the right there we had 76 freshmen who were considered not on track at the end of the 2021 school year so by the time school started in the fall of 2021 we were at 64.
all right so i'm going to pull two policies four colon 60 and four colons 65. i'm like where are my glasses point six five four points i could write it on a piece of paper i'm gonna pull them both okay i'll make a motion to pull sorry sometimes though their information yes they're just the disposition is about right letting the board know that in the future you might be getting a request for an expenditure you we just told you whereas right now we have no idea kind of what's going out the door or what happens to say like if there is a pile of of curriculum that we're getting rid of to take some new curriculum and what happens to that yes um and how are we making sure that we're aware of what has happened yeah yeah that's a good that's a good thing to know they i'm pretty sure they don't of course i just i feel like there might be a law that avoids that like sometimes i would hate to see everything go up in a bonfire in the parking lot also right the other um policies that are for first read or highlighted changes from the teaching and learning committee i spoke about earlier that we just would like accredited in front of tech program and distance learning courses so that they're not just you know the jen johnson online learning program from oswego that there's some accreditation around it and really giving the um administrators that that power to to see that and make sure that they're appropriate and then i think there was under exemption or 7.260 there was a legal update on that policy re-entering students and 8.65 is new and that talks about a document that will be with parents yeah i like that yeah i'm i'm really i'm really excited to have seen that come in to be honest with you i know that that's an area where parents continue to feel a little confused and say well i didn't think i heard that in the meeting and it's not in the notes so having the ability to hear what was said during a time when there's a lot of people in the room i really appreciate that that's being added for those of us that are deaf and hard of hearing it it's nice to be able to go and listen to it afterwards but both part all parties need to know that they're being recorded oh yeah okay anything else we're going to move on to 10.1 action item approval of bills for payment can i have a motion please i make a motion to authorize the payment of bills in the amount of four million six hundred and seventy one thousand four hundred and seventy four dollars and seven cents as presented second mr cerrone yes mrs johnson aye mr gatewood aye mrs swanson aye mrs doyle aye mrs simonton aye motion passes 6-0 um action item 10.2 approval of bus trust lease agreement can have a motion please i make a motion to approve the bus trust lease agreement with midwest transit equipment inc and santander leasing llc as presented second mrs doyle aye mrs swanson aye mr cyrone aye mrs similton aye mr gatewood aye mrs johnson aye motion passes 6-0 action item 10.3 approval of boilers and chillers project can i have a motion please i make a motion to approve the recommendation to accept the base bid and alternates number one and number two from helm mechanical in the amount of two million ninety five thousand dollars second mrs simultan aye mrs swanson aye mrs doyle aye mrs johnson aye mr cyron aye mr gatewood aye motion passes 6-0 action item 10.4 approval of board policies can i have a motion please i make a motion to approve the following board policies section 2 school board 2 colon 120 2 colon 220 section 3 general school administration 3 colon 40 section 4 operational services 4 colon 175 section 5 general personnel 5 colon 30 5 colon 125 5 colon 200 section 6 instruction 6 colon 60 6 colon 135 6 colon 180 section 7 students 7 colon 240 7 colon 250 7 colon 7 colon 290 7 colon 310 and 7 colon 315 second hey but can you please tell rob thank you for staying till 9 30.
it doesn't sound like i mean it's a great record but with the 10 losses but all those were 4a powerhouse and a lot of them all went downstate they did win the regional kind of some other girls basketball accolades becca karani was all all area honorable mention for the daily herald northwest herald riley duvall was all-conference all all area honorable mention for the daily herald of northwest herald and then taylor charles our princeton uh commit one player of the year for the king county chronicle and the northwest herald she was also first team all-state for the illinois basketball coaches association second team all-state for the ap and finally she was all-conference fox valley all area daily herald as well so as you can see a lot of accolades for girls basketball and we're going to just keep that rolling right in the boys it was a great season uh heartbreak loss in the sectional championship lost by two but you know it was just one of those we missed you know some free throws down the row and you know it's hard to come back from those but we had the ball with less than four seconds left and took the final shot it was either tie win or you know we lose but they broke the school record again with 31 wins which is phenomenal uh another sweet 16 finish loss to saint francis by two they were regional champs conference champs back to back has they have not lost a conference game for two years so that that's a big feat um all conference all five starters received all conference accolades gavin sarvis drew sharnowski zach schmidt carson seiler and nick carpenter um then daley harold all area players gavin sarvis zach schmidt carson seiler and then nick carpenter and drew sharonowski got honorable mention and then gavin was our northwest player of the year and then coach porto got northwest herald coach of the year so this was the first time we really got recognized by the northwest herald because they always told us we don't service your area and i push back with how many people get printed newspapers anymore it's all online and if you want to read the articles you got to buy the subscriptions look at your numbers and then all of a sudden we started getting the accolades because last year you know we should have had the players of the year coaches of the year but we were told we weren't recognized so but that's a great for boys and girls basketball um as as usual girls basketball have a little bit of reloading but we got a lot of girls with experience coming back boys basketball uh we're going to lose some good talent but we're all we're reloading our lower levels were great um exciting and you know just just the venue at south elgin i mean they sold out i think there's like 50 tickets left to sell i mean it was packed a great environment for that boys boys wrestling we kind of covered some of that but there are some new things that i got from coach gouveia as we know nathan kim finished in the top eight at the state tournament was one match away from bringing home a medal top six he was also fox valley all-conference wrestler and was nominated to the all area team doug phillips austin lee sammy winstrom qualified for the iwcoa frost off state tournament all three had some great matches but came up short nathan kim saif of thief have been nominated by the iwcoa academic all-state wrestling team and this qualification for the nomination is any upperclassmen who received a varsity letter and has a 3.7 gpa or higher those boys don't know they're going to find out tomorrow at awards so if they're not watching it'd still be a secret [Laughter] all right girls wrestling you guys approved the trip uh it was it was a great event it was piggybacked with team duels i'm not sure it's going to stay in that format but the way they're talking they're going to try to they want to make sure that the girls get what they need and it's not overshadowed but i mean our two girls soraya and tori went down and tori ended up finishing fourth place and she was also selected and i wrestled this past weekend i believe yes for team illinois all-star team duels and they beat indiana 54-12 and she won her match torrey was also nominated to the all area team and soraya was honorable mention and these two girls are freshmen and most of the girls down state were all juniors and seniors so they did a great job and you know the sky's the limit you know for them as well all right so that kind of wraps up our winner now we're kicking off spring you know feels like spring until it rains the next three days but it's what it is it feels spring boys and girls track has been going now since mid-january we we've made it through our flurry of indoor meets we've hosted five of them here and they're bigger than ever but uh starting with boys track uh they won indoor conference beating huntley again and uh there's nothing better than than that yusuf begg won the 1600 the 3200 zack schmidt won the 400 meter and set and set the indoor school record as well grayson burton won the pole vault and our boys track team is currently ranked fourth in the state by the mile split illinois so they have uh you know high hopes as well they got about one more week and then indoor state down at wesleyan and then they'll transition to outside girls track is in a rebuild year and i kind of laugh because i say vince rebuild they just finished fourth over this past weekend with 16 teams and like neuqua valley was there i mean some big horses and we still finished fourth so i'm like rebuild come on so but they're doing a lot of things we finished uh third third or fourth in the indoor conference meet as well and so they're getting ready to transition you know for indoor state and then outside as well so baseball softball baseball was playing today their first game south elgin we were up 2-0 when we left to come over to the board meeting so not sure how they finished out softball hasn't played yet and soccer played naperville central and they got two division one girls and they lost six zero but it's you know we play anybody and go anywhere it's we play better so then that way we get into conference it's it helps us out so all right that's it for athletics moving into the fine arts so math contest so we have four state qualifiers trying to read all this without butchering names but shabbat shah play part of the third place algebra one team in the fox valley competition ninth at the ictm regional so he qualified for algebra one in layman's term that's the easiest way jackson whipperfurth part of the third place algebra one team for the fox valley competition eighth at the ictm regional for algebra one young woo cho did not place in the fox valley competition but took ninth in the ictm regional and qualified for algebra ii daniel de la cruz didn't place at the fox valley competition but finished ninth at the ictm regional for pre-clouk so those are our four math contest state qualifiers their test is either the 29th or 30th they don't go anywhere it's going to be done at school so their coach palmeter is working with the kids which works better for them and how we're going to set up that environment for them our aces or wise team update we knew they got through regionals uh is doing great again we just won the sectional and the whole team will compete online the first week of april for state so in april we'll get all of those accolades from there as well so those are our two our our scholastic bowl team they won the regional and they did not place for sectionals but another great year you know for them as well um the play i'm not sure if people made it out to see the adams family but that was of recent it ran march 10th through the 13th they were excited to have their second production this year in front of live audience the audiences were great they're fortunate enough to have an extremely talented cast and crew and from what i'm hearing i talked to mr strike today hampshire and huntley both are doing the adams family and we've had people that have gone to the other ones and we've heard ours is by far way better so they they've kind of well they've kind of kept it more on they struggled with using more artificial sounds where we actually had the kids that you know could sound like lurch and you know some of the other characters where they had to impose that in and our sets they said was just phenomenal so kudos to them what's coming up for for concerts we we have our may week stretch you know may 3rd we got our wind ensemble and win symphony may 4th we got our chorus and corral may 5th is jazz band and then we're throwing in another night because we have the drama club and we have such great talent we're on may 6th it's a friday we're doing a theater night so kind of like an improv let's you know give him one last hurrah and then monday we're gonna finish it off with our most spirited group in our percussion concert and they're fun um i know the kids love the state send-offs just because the percussion and the drummers love being a part of that too um the last the last club that has some big things coming up and they're not the only one but things that i know will affect the community are our service club i know they just finished their great uh feed my starving children on last friday when we you know the kids were off we had 51 volunteers which included students parents teachers and staff and great turnout i know mr thief was there and then they're having their second annual color run coming up on may 14th it's only a mile so anybody of any condition could come and walk you could walk you can run you can it's just a fun thing that we have going on we actually have a baseball game we did last year we'll have another one this year it just happens to be that saturday um so don't worry all the powder washes off so it's and all the proceeds are going to go to the national alliance for mental illness in honor of mental awareness month and then basically the five colors they picked red is for drug addiction and dare yellow suicide green for eating disorders blue for depression and pink for anxiety and i really i know uh mrs zagorski and the kids are going to promote this more but i figure this is the largest public venue to promote it we want to get as many community people as we can come in i know last year when we ran it we did it through copen and succeeded but we kind of had a limit starts and everything else and now that we're kind of more back to normal it's like we want to get all of central involved and like we said it's a mile everybody can make it so that's all i have any questions yeah i have a question um about the wise aces uh competition that's a team um is that uh like a team that uh students have to try out for or is that a team that um how does that work so mrs stoner is our she's like our coach sponsor for that and i know she works with math and science and they try to take the best of the best but it also comes down to who's available you know because these kids you know doing other things outside because some of the tests are on saturdays yeah and they may have to work so i know they try to keep a very large group same thing with our math team because i know for the one regional they were struggling with are we you know who can come who's got to work and try to fit all the different pieces but they try to take the best of the best to compete so okay at all okay and then uh my other question slightly self-interested what is this iwcoa al illinois wrestling i know i know what it stands for but you said something about uh like you're on the all-academic team i didn't know about it until coach covea told me this afternoon oh okay so this is something new and he's like he goes they don't even know yet okay but my guess is they're not listening to the board meeting yeah i know myself he goes so it's safe to say so yeah he's going to he's going to present it tomorrow at the awards and give a little bit more background to it thank you so much don't say don't go home and say anything i'm not going to be a surprise lots of good things going on yeah and i think i think spring's going to be great and it's gonna be action-packed there's only seven weeks of school following spring break 35 baseball 35 softball and like i said we're halfway done with track beats because we do more indoor than outdoor hosting wise but i mean our facility was great we get kudos like last saturday we had 16 girls teams here and if anybody walked in they're like this is insane it's the most organized chaos but our first field events are 8 30 we were done by 2 o'clock so it's very efficient you know how we run things and you know all the other ones are 14 teams so it you know we're well oiled machine and we want to do more so thank you thank you thank you right next we have a capital projects update i think next month it's always kind of like a big letdown i try to make it um so yep we're cranking along um our first summer projects of the year are going to start spring break just because that's what we do in the construction world start as soon as we can so spring break week the pk and ct cafeteria expansions are going to start so we've got some construction fencing been working with our construction management company and the building principles get those construction areas fenced in start doing concrete get masonry up and try to get those exteriors up and going so then we can just knock out walls and finish the interiors when summer gets out contractors were very happy to get that opportunity to start because obviously everybody's busy in the summer even though the earlier you know last day of school so those will be starting spring break a couple other things we'll have some still have a few bids that'll be coming in the pv parking lot expansion the ct entrance drive and the lilly lake generator are still projects that we're working on with our architect to get those out to bid and we hope to get that done in april the transportation and buildings and grounds building we're still working on design for that and that'll be another project that'll be going out to bid the paving and earth work and underground work for that project um that probably will be after april that'll probably be more like may but that's a project we'll work in towards the end of the summer and that's back on the central campus and away from school and everything so we could work on that in the next school year some of the other things that we'll have going this summer we'll do a lot of our typical hallway bathroom school painting wide paint hallways getting things cleaned up floor tile replacement carpet replacement we'll be looking at a remodeling project here at the district office on the daycare side of the building we'll be doing some seal coating and crack filling on a lot of our paving areas that we've paved over the last couple years we'll start getting those seal coated and crack filled try to get that pavement to last and then some parking lot repairs at pkms we kind of have pushed off that parking lot for a couple years we're still probably another year or two away from a replacement there but we'll get some repairs done down there and kind of get that cleaned up and then i think we're in good shape as far as our parking lots and then along with all of our usual summer cleaning and all the other fun stuff in the summer any questions i know the mobiles are done but um i don't know if you know lily lake has like still cones and a little fence yeah so we so the final punch list will be done over uh spring break um we have to still have some skirting and some odds and ends of stuff to do and then we have a lot of asphalt repair a lot of that around yeah around the mobile and then alongside the building we had to go through the asphalt to get the electric and and data and stuff to the building so that'll all be taken care of same with country trails the sites are kind of rough in those two areas just because they were on grass and you know where they were at so that'll all be remediated over the summer you know grass planted and you know site repaved and cleaned up and by next school year it'll be in really good shape any other questions thank you thank you thank you that wraps up open session in motion second to adjourn the executive yes rabe yes a thief yes bulk yes and pill yes gorman yes like a five to seven minute break
i do have a motion to approve so move by mr smith and second by mr angel any uh questions or comments from mr hartman all those in favor signify saying aye aye opposed that motion carries four zero and now we have the item 6.3 is the to award macarthur and timothy ball renovation bid packages mr reese thank you mr president tonight we bring before you two recommendations uh recommendations for the contracts for the two projects the macarthur additions and renovations and also the timothy ball additions and renovations project um in opening those bids um we did uh skillman and and the school corporation have worked with all the six the successful low bidders and in a successful manner on previous projects with that we are recommending the approval of the bids contracts for macarthur elementary additions and renovations for a total of 22 million eight and approval of contracts for timothy ball elementary for twenty four million three hundred fifty two thousand and one hundred and thirty four dollars thank you mr reese for the recommendation approved the contracts for macarthur elementary school and additions renovations as presented for a total of 22 million 925 578 and approval of contract for timothy elementary school auditions as presented for a total of 24 one million 352 four dollars got a motion to approve moved by mr angel in second by mr smith um how many questions are comments from mr reese and i noticed um mr caceres from skillman corporation joined us in the audience i'm sure he would be happy to answer your questions if we have them for them dionne is probably a question for you we try like when we're using obviously different contracts because of the bidding process we try to tie together like the system's being used so that it's easier for stuff that might have to be done down the line if at all possible absolutely okay let me make accommodations for the potential future presentation okay thank you at our last meeting you had mentioned uh the question came up um i think it's just about competition and oh yeah we're back again mr gill mentioned that uh the mic is helpful uh but the question came up last meeting competition supply and demand of labor right now and and these jobs and how i think they just asked in general how things were going for you and you said quite well and uh i noticed that a lot of different names are crossing here for work between the two buildings right so is that kind of shaking out as you expected you received it for macarthur and 41 bids for 14 categories for timothy ball which represents an average of three bids per category which is great competition so the short answer your question is yes this is what we would have reasonably anticipated got it um what category do the um like playgrounds fall for example well playgrounds um actually the infrastructure the asphalt the curb work the stone drainage would fall under the general trades bid category one so for timothy ball that would be under golf incorporated and then for macarthur it will be larson danielson the actual purchase of the equipment and soft surfaces is going to happen at a later date as we consider all the playgrounds district wide and focus on you know all the all the elementary i'm schools looking over to make sure i didn't have any questions from earlier also anybody any other questions okay yes mr hoffman i just wanted to comment in light of the estimation the small amount that the current numbers are above and beyond the original estimate i think that's pretty remarkable in consideration what's going on in our economy and this the whole issue of supply and demand so everybody who worked on that should be lauded for their efforts thank you thank you oh sorry any other comments if not we'll submit this for a vote just a correction i think you said second by itself got it uh miss green this um was the second by mr babjack thank you all right all those in favor signify by saying guy hi opposed motion carries 4-0 thank you miss reese thank you bye yes please as of today the documents for wheeler middle school additions or renovations hit the street today and we'll be opening bids april 15th so assuming all that goes well then we'll come before you at the april meeting to make recommendations for that project as well thank you 6.4 is the approval of crowdfunding for the vex robotics team mr reese thank you mr president members of the board with some excitement we have uh identified uh recognized that two teams each from the high school and both middle schools have qualified for the vex robotics world championships um i think surprisingly to a lot of us that there's some extensive uh expenditures that go along with with that and traveling with the robots down to texas and also traveling for the in both teams um there's been some requests to do some fundraising for that uh via in this case gofundme page so with that we bring before you uh based on your board policy 8131 the four items necessary for you to look at the approval of crowdfunding uh for this endeavor with that the the policy as you can see as i mentioned we're going to use gofundme we're looking for 10 000 for the high school 10 000 for colonel wheeler middle school and then 12 000 for taft middle school taft does have a few more team members than colonel wheeler the platform and and what that is is what's going to happen say we need 10 000 for the high school but only raise 5 000 what will we do in some cases you would turn back all the donations because you didn't reach your goal in this case what we're asking for is whatever donations we receive we'll use to offset the cost whether they go or don't go and then not use be put in their account and use next year for their vex robotics teams moving forward and then also is a draft posting of the three messages that go along with on the page so you can see what requests are actually being made on the gofundme page there so with that we've met all four of your requirements in the board policy 8131 are asking permission to allow the three schools to start a gofundme page for their two vote vex robotics teams at each building thank you mr reese you for the recommendation approved the proposal for our school buildings with vex robotics teams participating in the world championship to be allowed to create gofundme.com pages to accept donations to offset their costs do we have motion to approve that's moved by mr smith a second and second by mr angel any questions or comments from mr reese just a comment in general that i know mr warner you and i have spoken on numerous occasions about opportunities for those in our community businesses churches just different entities that are always looking for ways to get involved in relationship with our school corporations to support our students and this is an occasion that came across here tonight that i think this would be one that we need to get accustomed to i imagine the world championships are going to happen every year for us depending you know based upon the stem and the robotics and the programs that we're building um but it it it exceeds you know what what the expectation for the school corporation to pay for their their participation in the state level estate-based programs that are equal with other programs that we have in our school corporation and so i would invite anybody out there that might be listening that is looking for a need or way to partner with our school corporations to look at a long-term plan here for the robotics and stem and i'm sure there's some entities out there so i just want to make that comment and we're always welcome we're always you know have open open minds and all ears to to form that kind of partnership in this case mr recite i must i feel like the answer is somewhere within here that i've missed but um is it is it one page that or is it three individual pages so is there is that the the excuse me the crumpled high school has the 10 000 is that if i were to submit a donation to the gofundme page do i need to pick where it is going or is it going to be cumulative and that's where what the goals are it'll be three separate pages it is three separate pages correct one for each school because then the money to be dispersed to that school and controlled and that way we can reimburse for those legitimate expenses that any of the teams that each of the buildings might have that's where we have the control over those donations coming in and making sure that the donations are used appropriately based on state board of accounts rules and regulations so it is very possible that one of the three could be fully funded through here and one could come up 80 short and there's not a there's that it is what it is that's correct okay and then um by by any chance uh does gofundme offer educational discounts because i do they do take a cut correct a small fee they do take educational purposes is there um do we get any relief as a for you know being yeah i don't know that answer i have to check into that and get back to you i'm just curious i seems like there's many opportunities out there when you're trying to fund a school project or something to better the children through education that maybe there'd be a little bit of rate reduction any other questions all those in favor of that conversation can you donate directly to the school oh can did you hear the mr offense question could we donate directly to school yeah so i'm sure that with the account set up we'd be happy to take that donation directly at the school could hear that mr hoffman yes if with with the account being once the account is set up the school would be happy to take a direct donation and yes mr smith too i i you know from a school corporation standpoint you hope to give all you can to all the school the the achievements that are out there but in cases like this uh um we've just i think we've talked in the past of not so much what we've seen for ourselves but what we've seen others do and the amount of money whether it be through you know alumni associations and business relationships and as you see the churches there's uh many communities thrive on the community chipping in and contributing so i do agree um so all those in favor signify by saying aye aye opposed motion carries 4-0 thank you mr reese and everybody involved in trying to help these students gain some extra funding for their trip oh item 7.1 superintendent discussion groups um i think we could mr smith any anything new from cedar lake no there's just a project expansion i think i talked about it last month at the intersection of 133rd and king street that seems to be the discussion of focal point beyond beyond that facades and tif districts they're restructuring the tif district for the residential areas and having those types of discussion i don't know if dr terrell has anything i think last month you might indicated a meeting was coming up i don't know if it happened yet or if you have anything to add to it so i have we've had a couple different meetings out there one i spoke with at the chambers luncheon and spoke with them found got some new information about a water tower they're getting ready to put up which they feel will really expand some of the opportunities for further housing developments out there we also have been working with the help me get the name of it right the planning commission from cedar lake as we look at mcarthur and the things that are happening there with making sure that all of our plans are in and approved as we're looking to start that work here the end of may beginning of june so we've had a couple different we've got a couple more meetings coming up with them so i feel like we're in a pretty good place with all of them but uh i don't know mr hoffman you may be out of town but have you had any any word from the the city or anything i think anything to contribute mr angel from winfield do not all right how about uh director of elementary education mr mears thank you mr president and board members i would just like to take this opportunity to thank our administrators our teachers and staff students and their parents we successfully completed the i read three testing window administration that just wrapped up on friday and just want to thank everybody who contributed to a successful administration and then for good efforts of all of our students who participated in that assessment will continue to work with any students who need any additional remediation and will continue to address the needs of our students individually any questions on ivory three well thank you mr moors i think we can install david's probably got kids that the rest of us pass that stage this one i mentioned that i'd that the very simple handout that did come home to explain you know scores amongst peers scores verse national uh you know um you know can you can you visualize the sheet that i'm referring to this may not have been i read but yeah an explanation of if we as parents if we could continue to get something so simple to show just you know progression and where you know children stand it's i maybe you've been doing that forever but as mr angel said now with kids in first and second grade it's it's it's nice um it's a simple explanation of what's going on and where they you know how they're doing yeah you may be referring to our nwea middle of the year parent report that we're trying to provide kind of a one-page document um that shows growth from our beginning of year middle of year and then there will be another report that's sent home at the end of the year so that we're kind of focused on our math and our reading for nwea the scores for i read three are preliminary so nothing has been sent home quite yet on iread3 those scores just came out this morning thank you director of secondary education mr gene fermi uh thank you mr president board members uh first i'd like to start with a comment about our vex robotics teams what i did find out is the worlds are a five-year contract for the city that hosts it so we'll be going to dallas probably for the next four years so to mr smith's point this is a good time to start thinking about how we will help fund our our teams in the future but a point of uh good news here mr hardman did some research in one of our high ability grants and did find that we will be able to help with the entry fees for all eight teams and it's twelve hundred dollars per team so we're gonna be able to cover that for them get that money back into the team's travel and expenses that so that was a good news for our coaches today as we move forward with that endeavor so really proud of those guys um i do think it was a situation where we were gaining momentum kovit hit we came out of covid and here we were so i think we'll be way more prepared next time this time next year also number two uh in our consent agenda we approved an mou for pillars of health this is our second community mental health partner that we are partnering with for our students and families and it's a really important piece as we kind of tear our our supports for students and families that need that extra support we also have a partnership with crown counseling these are both local community partners that provide this type of service it was kind of nice to see them work together as i was talking with pillars of health to our wellness rather to come on and board crown counseling is right with them kind of coaching them up helping them out so they're actually kind of working together rivals working together but for the betterment of our students in our community so we do appreciate that approval and we know it's going to benefit our students we're going to start with this group at colonel wheeler jerry ross in winfield so appreciate that and then finally um wednesday is our academic loud days celebration so hopefully anyone that can make it you'll you'll be there you'll see a lot of those athletes and latin students and all the folks that have been coming through here they'll be getting recognized their senior year for some academic excellence question if i may jump in on that last comment that mr g and fermi had if you could please let diana know if you're able to attend that ceremony uh wednesday night that way we can make sure that we've got a place for you and i think mr smith did last year but i think he i think he had a selfish reason for being there too sure okay i don't even know what time it starts i don't think six times six pm i did to speak to miss green i'm not going to be able to i will not be able to make it on wednesday but mr smith is either anyone else uh let miss green know and the hors d'oeuvres cafeteria are back i know mr angel had a run of 12 years of probably going i was at a few of them yeah and i'm still see if i can make it wednesday i like that one that's a special one thank you mr g for me how about uh around the corner graduations uh already coming down the town of pipeline right plan still uh tentatively to be the same as the last couple years yes they will be excellent football field nice shiny day good weather yep perfect um director of exceptional education miss pasquez good evening president warner members of the board today is march 21st which is also a world down syndrome day so um the 321 is that extra chromosome on the 21st chromosome so with brooke's help we had a corporation rock your socks day so it could be just crazy socks mismatched socks it's hard to see here now but some of us here around the tables were participating in that day so we have a lot of good pictures and i think you'll be seeing those on social media and maybe some other local news organizations soon thank you ms pazkus and uh are we going to chief academic officer mr hartman yeah thank you mr warren um i wanted to just share we're in the process of looking at language arts resources at the elementary school and adopting that part of our review that we're into right now with uh with the vendor is we're doing a field test about 66 teachers are using the resource over the next month to uh you know to kind of engage students in it and get some get some feedback as far as the use of it another thing that we're doing because it's an english language resource with readings for learning the content readings learning the skills there's there's things in it that are uh about social studies and science and uh and health and those kinds of things we thought it would be a good idea uh that we uh notify parents the types of things that are in the resource so there was an email that went out to all the uh elementary parents that gave an outline of all the the content that was in it and then uh this coming thursday we are we did invite parents to come to winfield elementary hear a presentation uh and get some questions answered um so uh um that is all kind of just because of the kind of the way things are right now we don't want to make we want to make sure that there's there's nothing hidden uh and we want to present the material to our to our parents and let give them a chance to to explore it now uh as we move through our process hopefully we'll bring a recommendation to you uh for an adoption uh as early as april uh on the 26th when it comes so any questions uh not really a question but i'm glad you brought that up because i i feel like at some point time in the last month i may have owed a couple explanations back to board members we had just a conversation just from the 30 000 feet above the idea of the curriculums that we choose as a school corporation the amount of people in that world to pick from and if you were to ever be unhappy with one how the process may take place to make a change um i had a one-on-one conversation with a board member and dr terrell dr terrell explained to me pretty good but if you if either one of you could kind of give that to the board real quick i'd than me trying to show a piece of paper so i've asked our curriculum department to kind of debrief on that so we can have a plan of an easy way of saying that we're working through that we were contacted by representative oltof with some questions regarding that when the session was going on and we've uh invited her to come up and meet with us so we can share that with them but mr hardman if you just want to hit the highlights of it real quickly of how people can come in and review and if they have concerns sure absolutely uh yeah um we do have policy that that does uh address this uh so when a uh uh a parent uh would like to come in and we're gonna call it inspect in curriculum so that would be something that they want to come in and inspect that we currently have policy is pretty much outlined that they come into a location that we have set up and we actually do it here in our kiwa's office we have a computer set up there we have a large screen where they can come in and see the digital because we have so much of it digitally and then we also will print material and the parent needs to be very specific in what they want to see and then we make it available to them there is a form that they complete for us that they will sign off and if they have questions regarding the the curriculum that they want to put on that form then once they are finished they submit it to me and then if there are questions or concerns that need further uh explanation then we will get get in touch with them so that's kind of the process for an inspection of any of our material we have had just a few i mean this year we had a few for some health uh related things um we had um someone come in and wanted to explore the the next grade level curriculum for their children coming in and they came in we're very hesitant we don't no pictures no copies it's it's it's all things that we are very much trying to keep confidential and protect uh protect the uh materials that we do have we also make sure that there is someone in the room that they're in um kind of overseeing it but it's really a proximity kind of a thing so that uh um there is none of that taking place uh when they when they're here to explore or to inspect the curriculum i asked the question also and just taking it i'm trying to take the opportunity while we're all together to um to ask a couple questions so now let's say you're at a a level and teacher is providing worksheets and something very simple like of these four sentences which one contains an adverb and it's abc or you know nothing above and the four sentences that are created in today's day and age you know 25 years ago all those sentences were created by the teacher and the teacher right next door could have had four different they're all teaching the same subject in their own in their own way in today's day and age with the curriculums that we have are those questions provided to the teachers more often than the teachers making the questions themselves or in that the pretty definitive yes yes so the odds if we have you know three there's a couple of things that take place when we when we purchase a resource such as the one we're exploring right now that would be the curriculum that all the teachers at elementary school grade level would be using therefore the materials the questions that would be asked would be the same across the district could a teacher based on their class want to add other questions because they're doing some additional assessment in the classroom absolutely they could and those could be different even though i think with the setup at both the high school middle and uh and elementary we call them professional learning communities you might call them grade level teams that the team should be together on anything that might be different or new that they should come to agreement so that they're all using that at the grade level at the school when those things do occur so i think the materials that we have really does tighten it up but there is flexibility based on your students and what their needs are and what you want to know about the child and what they're learning so we're firing off questions so it's always difficult but uh in that circumstance where you're where a teacher would be able to create a question draft a question somebody a parent comes in and says i wish to see the curriculum perhaps it's those questions that are causing discomfort or issue that they want addressed how would the administration know before this product or these questions or these assignments are being handed out to the students or would they not and the only way that it would be raised is if somebody calls attention to it i would probably say to you that that would be the case in that in that situation since it's not in a resource and if the teachers are creating something and they go online i mean you can go online and you can find questions that target what you want to be able to to to target if they put it within the learning management system of course we have a record of of that and would be able to go back to that and be able to uh to discuss it with the parent uh and uh get in wouldn't wouldn't necessarily want to to have the teacher be part of that discussion but would be able to go to those teachers and to to get some background on what the questions were what they were for why they were being uh why they were being used what did where did they get them from so it'd be though that would be the process that we would do in the event that that were the case i might jump into i think one of the keys is while we do have these resources for our teachers we still expect them to be the professionals within their classrooms and they utilize those resources but still depending on what's coming up what's happening that day maybe that class period they make changes and adjust those as well so if there are concerns mr smith as you brought up i think that's one of the keys is to reach out to the administrators at the building to the teacher try and go that avenue first and hear from them and hopefully that can be cleared up there and they can understand concerns if not then take it to that next step and involving the principal and then from there to here so that we can look at those situations you know i think one of the things that i would encourage parents to do is to make sure you're having those conversations with your children about what is happening in school there are going to be times where things are presented that as a parent you may not agree with um but it's a great opportunity for you to sit down with your child and have a conversation about why you don't agree with them we always talked about that it was great to have those conversations when they were coming home and eating dinner with us rather than when they went away to college and now they're four or five hours away and we don't have that opportunity to have that influence on them so i think it's a great way just to understand the diversity that is taking place but yet to be able to have those conversations thank you i i think it's always the conversation you and i had was was helpful and some of the technology is so powerful you could talk about 120 kids in the second grade at a elementary school and if they're all taking questions on an electronic platform and the teachers collaborate to find out that 90 kids missed the same question well we have an issue with teaching that that problem if they're all using a uniform set of questions you know so that's a little i don't know not that not that we all necessarily feel old but just everything's changed so fast from having you know whatever mcgraw-hill or you take home this 400-page book that everybody learned out of throughout the whole school district where you know the all the the little at the end you read a chapter and they all had questions at the end well we all knew we were looking at the same questions i sometimes just lose grasp of how much that has changed in the world today with like you know maybe this curriculum provider might they might provide a thousand different questions that are all rotating where scott and i could be in the same class and not even see the same question that you know but can we pick out the adverb you know and um so the conversations i think help us as a board member understand just evolution education and what elect technology is doing to them to your point the one step that even takes it further is we have tests and assessments now that our kids take that depending on how you answer the question we'll steer you in another direction as opposed to how scott answered his question and go to another so that and that's some of the information you're receiving back from the nwa assessments and one of the great things about that is how it personalizes what we know about each kid each student and there's a balance there too because not everything is technically curriculum is what i'm hearing and that's i don't know if parents always including myself as a parent of four always know the balance there what is curriculum versus what is a teaching or an education or something that the the teacher is constructing and you don't want to quash the innovative teaching of the teachers that's what makes it great i hated books so for me if books are considered curriculum throw them away because i'm a logic and reasoning guy right i like to someone express and teach me real life examples and that's how i learned so i mean there's it's all a balance i understand that um you know these are tough questions but i think it's an important discussion and conversation to have in front of the public so they can hear this and understand this and as a parent you will have concerns and i appreciate you mr hardman sharing the process and dr terrell that hey we we will address it you can ask a question and raise a concern and it will be discussed and addressed and just follow the the protocol start with the teacher the building leader and before you call mr hardman screaming um that would help the administration a great deal so the curriculum review process that we have in place that's how long has that been in place well i've been here for a long 20 years 21 years so point it's it's developed over time right i think but it's not something that we put in place as a result of legislation passed or well there was legislation that uh um i think there is some guidance now but there was some pretty tight legislation um prior to the current times uh it was it was pretty much that you were driven by the textbook uh adoption timeline it was a six year thing and those were the only times you could adopt that's kind of been that's been relaxed now crown point we have our own adoption kind of a timeline that we want to do but we want to make sure that when we have a committee that we involve teachers we have administrators on it we want to get feedback from parents um i think the field test is something that we've added just recently into into the decision uh which has been really good we basically started that last year and uh it really exposes the curriculum but the transparency to the curriculum has been available yes for a long time yes absolutely and you guys actually have board policy that has addressed that for years and years so right so my point being it's not something we've had to add recently that is kind of current and that was the conversation i had with representative was just that this is a new and the problem that was presented the assembly wasn't new we have this kind of like speaking at board meeting isn't new i mean they passed a new statute for it but we've always done it that yeah people haven't wanted to speak until recently correct now it gets used a little more appreciate that little sidetrack i wanted to the opportunity to have those conversations there uh thank you mr hartman uh chief human resource officer mr aquila thank you mr president board members just two uh items to report on this evening just a general update on uh the interview processes are going well for our open positions that would be positions we might be adding and positions we're learning that are becoming available due to you know retirements and resignations so i just thank you to all of our staff members out there especially our great leaders in this room that have been driving some of those processes interviewing's enjoyable because we get to speak to some pretty high quality candidates out there so it's been it's been going great so far and secondly uh we're at a great point here in our teacher of the year employee of the year administrator of the year process we're finishing up each building's voting on who their representative will be to go to that final step of the the teacher of the year award here in crown point community school corporation so we're looking forward to moving from nomination to selection for the building and then after spring break having those interviews to kind of narrow down those uh those finalists so i thank you to our entire school community for nominating you know so many great individuals and our individual schools that have selected their candidates to represent each building for the process going forward that's all i have for you this evening thank you mr akiba and mr reese from the business office i have nothing to say thank you thank you director of communications miss allen thank you after spring break about a week after spring break we're going to start a new program called coffee and conversation it's exactly what it sounds like it's coffee and conversation um this is an opportunity for community members to meet with dr terrell and just chat about anything questions they have comments concerns whatever that might be there's no set agenda or presentation for the hour it's just come and chat this will be april 13th at 9 30 in the morning at the crown point library news thank you miss allen and we'd love to have any of you that want to join as well for security or just general purpose oh no we're bringing in uh dave coulson for security that'd be great yeah yeah so we're we're trying to um spread it out around the community so we're going to start with the crown point library but then we're also going to look for a location in winfield and then another one in cedar lake before the school year is out just to provide that opportunity for conversations yep where is that going to be who who is that can be marketed to or where where will the community find out that they could participate we will put it on our website as a pop-up social media we'll create an event for it we'll put it in our newsletters all of the typical ways we'd like normally to our outreach yeah the school newsletters will have something there sounds great uh superintendent schools dr tara yeah so i want to thank mrs allen and her leadership with our super things series you saw solon came out with the ukuleles our next one will be coming out i believe is the high school um so be watching for that in the next couple of days here and again just really talking about the many great things as we hear tonight and you hear all these different things that are happening in our corporation just other opportunities and what we intend to do with this then is create a catalog where you can go and if you have people who are new to the community or thinking about coming in even businesses that are thinking about coming to our community they can start to really see what crown point schools is all about and some of the great things that are taking place i had great feedback from the first one that we put out and we look forward to more with that the other thing i'd like to just highlight tonight is our community support for our kids is just amazing from people shooting off fireworks as state championship teams come back into town to our first responders escorting teams out of town and back into town to the saint patrick's day parade the other night and the gymnasts were there on the trolley being celebrated there signs as you continue to see it's just a wonderful thing to see the community support for our kids and for the efforts that they put forward so we appreciate that and please know that it doesn't go unnoticed thank you doctoral other business the board of school trustees does anybody have anything that they'd like to kick around this evening yes mr office hey i forwarded dr carol an email received from julie slavins kind of addressing my situation tonight but it appears that we can adopt a policy that would permit us to have a board member participate in a meeting and be eligible to vote and so i think that's something we should probably take a look at because from time to time each of us may be called out of town and we're all pretty conscientious about trying to participate in the meetings if that can be done feasibly i think we need to attempt to do that i think it's a good conversation mr hoffman we mentioned a little bit uh earlier dr terrell and i were speaking about it and um so the understanding is that you could still participate via zoom through a vote as long as you have you you have to have a quorum present so we could have three people present two people remote if we have a policy in place to allow them to vote that'd be acceptable um i know if i i don't want to be taking the taking the wrong way on my thoughts uh i'm very comfortable with that with our current board um i've gotten to know you all really well and and i'm not 100 sure it's the best idea for all situations um so very i have a very very very small opinion here but something worth considering as long as your participation this evening oh you can't vote but you're a board member who cares and took the time to join us which is why i don't mean to sound like i put you on a spot sometimes during the meeting but i want to acknowledge that you're here throughout the meeting when i say hey mr hoffman you have any thoughts or whatever because you are taking the time to join us this evening when you really don't have to um as anybody are there i mean i could as we move forward we could kind of decide one way or the other and i i would almost support anything yeah i mean if we've learned anything in the last two years it's we can accomplish an awful lot via zoom in webex and you know we've all had to do it it's just as efficient i like the concept of having a rule where it can only be so many people remote because we need to show up but the attendance of this group has been has been very good um so why not why not allow something like that where he where mr hoffman can vote um because it could be me getting called out of town for work or or any one of us and we do want to attend these meetings so definitely something we should consider and i'd i'd be all for it in the right circumstances how about i think i think one of the one of the issues is that we need to we have to talk to the tech department because as i as i went back through the information i think it requires the audience to be able to see the person attending virtually so i don't know if we've got the technology to be able to do that through our current equipment or whether it would require adding additional equipment yeah tom we we currently have that technology opportunity available to us right now so it would not require any additional technology or purchases along that way i think preliminarily i mean i didn't give any thought before tonight but i think the question would be asked are we more effective by having a five-person board vote on an issue even if one is remote are we better off having a four-person board and having to you know when we're out of town we just don't show i mean that's the reality of it i mean what's what's a more effective policy so i think it's important to show up and have as many people at the board meetings present in person as you can have but the realities of life is that i mean historically if i was gone in july i wasn't going to the july board meeting maybe that's not the best move maybe we should have our elected people and representatives here away or create a mechanism for do for them to appear and vote on the issues so i'm not i'm a little bit like you david i don't have any hard lines just right there but my thought is um i think the policy needs to be thought through and revisited sounds good we could um bring a policy to you at the next board meeting for your review and obviously with that as an action item and ask you for discussion again at that time so that way you'll have enough time to kind of talk through it think through it and then at our april meeting have the opportunity to decide if you want to bring it back for a second reading if you want to make changes to it if you want to forego the second reading and adopt it we'll just we'll bring it to you and just know that those will be the options that are there before you and you can have that further conversation at that time sounds great all right part of that email that i sent to dr terrell did include a a draft resolution and maybe todd you could for that under the rest of the board members i will do that thank you thank you thanks for bringing that forward mr robin um how about any other other business or the only thing i'd like to mention is thank you to the powers of being with our legislative bodies down to the state and making sure house bill 1134 didn't go any further than it needed to go from a perspective of us trying to educate our kids in our community so kudos to that for ending up where it ended up and i'd like to just revisit what dr terrell said about the saint patrick's day parade i think it fits best here you know our community is a special community and i had the opportunity to walk in that parade with the junior bulldog football program and it's absolutely insane that whole downtown was just packed 15 20 people deep all the way around the square but it's up and down the road so kudos to the mayor because i think he had that vision for st paddy's day parade maybe three four years ago and it's really grown into something but i think we may be missing opportunity although we did recognize the the state champions the gymnastics team but i think we're missing an opportunity for maybe more showcase for our school corporation by not being more involved if possible and i know all the coaches and the parent and everybody's like oh geez here but i do think like i mean there's anybody know a marching band we should probably have a marching band here if we can and have that discussion about how do we facilitate uh and so into our community a little better from a school corporation it's one thing that just dawned on me is like i think we're missing some opportunities i know anastasia was there uh how great would it be to have a float for the parade for that year coming up into the future just to market to ticket sales and market what the high school's doing and and the the whole parade was just lined with kids i mean just three-year-old all the way up to 10 year olds you know and so we're just it's just an outreach these young kids that are coming to crown point high school and i know there's children from outside the community too but just to show another another opportunity to show the great things that we're doing in our schools and the opportunities available to the children as they come up through the school corporation so that's just something that dawned on me and i felt it would be appropriate to comment here you mr smith anything else anybody else um let's see what we have next board statements appreciation recognition mr smith we come back to you for uh any statements of recognition this evening i have a lot to say tonight um anastasia what a what a great play i think dr terrell you had a chance to see it and um uh what what what incredible team over there that they do incredible job so i want to commend all the the the the um you know mr golov mr mrs degenhardt and all the others over there the band that's down under the orchestra i mean how they just time up the music and the play it's fascinating but there was a scene that had a train i don't know for those who saw it that just blew my mind how they just created the set and this train is moving and as they're rotating it and it really just stuck out it was to me it was amazing it was fascinating and just that a high school performance could put that kind of stage together and that kind of timing was really really impressive and so i just want to as always i just want to commend everybody involved in that and the students were amazing and they had little children that first time i've seen it and all the performances i've been to that were i don't know dr what do you think they were like five to nine five to nine years old that they're on there so what an opportunity for these kids to to get experience and they did a great job so just an amazing show thank you mission uh nothing for me tonight mr angel i don't have anything myself sorry neither do i um we won't mention i know um just because some stuff does get lost uh dr terrell not to put more on your plate or maybe ask miss green but for a little while we had the folder going back for it just not that we necessarily mentioned it in the meeting just so um you will receive thank you letters from someone you did something for miss green if we could still share that with the board i i always thought it was kind of neat to you know maybe we wouldn't even mention it in a meeting but to know that you know something happened with an administrator and somebody wrote a thank you letter to them and it touched our family and um it was i liked flipping through that in the past and not trying to add any work to anybody if if it is but if it's something easy to do that i'd appreciate it so um before we close up this evening any last thoughts otherwise we'll look for a motion to adjourn do we have a motion to adjourn so moved moved by mr angel seconded by mr smith all those in favor saying vibe by saying aye aye opposed motion carries 4-0
so any district that has more than 50 percent of their students scoring at level 1 or 2 in the 2019 math assessment must participate in the program and contribute to the cost based on their fte i have a lot of problems i don't know anything about math nation and as far as i know i don't think there are many educators in the state legislature so i have a feeling somebody somewhere put a bug in their ear about math nation maybe it's the greatest program but i really have a hard time with this is an unfunded mandate we'll have to kick in money now we're not anywhere near i don't you know 50 of our students uh scoring on one and two but um just i i think it's fed uh state government overreach uh the last one house bill 2690 um adopt a legislative statement on education and academic achievement every child can read act which directs school boards to measure student achievement provided provide targeted intervention to promote student leadership especially for students at or below the third grade level and a literacy deficit provide communicating with parents that make reports to the state board and requiring an annual report from the state department of education to report on the academic achievements including state assessment results and other measures you know one of the things that they mentioned a lot is we've given more money to schools and some scores have gone down there's been a lot that has helped a tribute to that pandemic missing uh nine weeks of school i would stack our students here in this district we're doing a pretty good job i'll always have room for improvement but that is some of the actions being taken i have sent emails to our representatives and ask them to come spend the day in our school to see what we do get to have a response but i would invite them to come out and see the work that teachers and administration do in this district parents to help students so any questions on any of the legislative so as far as the parents bill of rights our library reporting system uh i'll be honest with you any teacher that can tell me what they're going to do on october 21st if that's a work day next year i'd be disappointed because who knows what might have happened october 20 or the day before i mean some of you that are farmers you can say i'm going to plant wheat on this date but if it rains or whatever and you can't get in the field you push it you adjust to what the conditions tell you the same with students i've often said a lot of times they try to make educating students like building a car and it's not it's not an assembly line process every kid is different every kid learns different we have experts in the classroom our teachers who determine what that is and adjust as they go so interesting times so just for that that the parents go right well see that's what they're doing they'll do some of that or they might slip the food tax went in on that to try to i mean i'm like for stand-alone vote this vote that don't bundle things together uh like i said i i'm in contact they're not they're not terribly uh great about responding to emails which is disappointing but i did see that there's going to be an open house and i have it on my calendar i think it's in april april 11th or something that i'll probably go to over in great band but honestly when i talk like troy waymaster education always takes up a lot of the legislative time but it seems to be a full-on assault on public education at the state level right now and one of the things they did is they uh said hey invite them out to your buildings and see what you guys do so if any of you are listening open invitation come on out we'd love to have you uh strategic plan update this is based off some of the work the configuration committee did with uh mr jordan disseminated into a workable document i'm not going to go on the whole vision part i'll just get to the meat potatoes if you go to i gotta grab the one where my sticky notes are i'm grabbing the wrong one facilities physical plant improvements uh you see the four actions that are listed there i'm going to briefly touch on our plans or what we have done for those uh establish a cycle of maintenance we have a preliminary plan but we're really going to spend some time this summer getting our maintenance crews in and trying to develop a plan so if they were to leave somebody else could come in and say oh this year i need to make sure i do this and kind of work i can't really do that myself because i don't know when that air filter needs to be changed i need to get them in so we're going to get them in and help develop that similar to the capital outlay we're continuing to work on that we always look at how we budget in capital outlay and where that money money's going uh sid weens has been out in the district he was here over spring break and walked the buildings with an architect thank you to tim amg and gunner for showing them around they've been in the buildings multiple times he's working on developing a list of building needs that i'm he might be ready to present in april at the worst i think it would be may so we've got that he's looking he's been looking at the buildings continuing on physical plant improvements i have a full bid from ins alert security out of ellenwood for security at wilson and central plains high school uh i was going to have them present tonight but uh we'll probably push them until april uh here's the full vid we've met with them several times they've walked all the buildings some of the highlights of the bid that could be used esther money can be used for improved camera surveillance system access control panels uh vape detectors uh cameras surveillance wilson and klaplin and also a monitoring system that they would help monitor and the way we can get some of this under esser is contact tracing so with cameras you can visually contact trace who was near another person and the vape uh detecting detection which we have some issues in our district with vaping also that falls under clean air but it also has a detection if somebody were like getting a fight in a bathroom it would alert as well so uh really excited with the plan they've provided it's not cheap i'm going to tell you that right now we're a little north of 200 for all that but it does i really the vape detection is something we really need to look into securing all the entrances and i think it will be a good good way to provide our students that safe environment that we want also we're working again with sid uh on capital outlay plan what could be part of a possible bond issue what could we try to attack with our uh capital outlay plan uh so we're kind of working on all that next page yes okay interrupt uh going back to the security does that mean there's cameras everywhere there would be mushrooms i don't think they're being classified in bathrooms no would not be in bad news be in hallways uh outside yeah you know like high definition we have cameras now but again you go to shoot out there kind of grainy not these are high definition cameras scott am i missing anything 4k 4k they have a monitoring uh like we've had we had an alarm going off here because there was a balloon in the room and it was fluttering around and i know that for a fact because i met the sheriff out here two o'clock in the morning one morning and i think mrs ogers had to do that too a time or two but so they would help monitor the system uh i really like to have them come out and explain everything to you because i know i wouldn't do it justice so good question uh next page utilization and efficiencies the one move salaries out of capital outlay so dollars are more accessible for repairs and improvements uh be honest with you i just can't i can't do that i just don't i don't have the general fund money to move that salary out of capital outlay at this time i just don't don't have it so i'll continue to work on trying to find a way to make it happen but right now i i can't establish and communicate district-wide staffing guidelines that set people-teacher ratios that drives decisions to split combine or add paris to the classroom when administrators and i talked about this were a little concerned to ever set a class size like a hard limit like you can have 20 kids and they can be just super i mean you don't have any problem you have a few problems but you can deal with it then you can have 20 that you might want to split if you possibly could so a little nervous about setting hard guidelines because uh there's always an exception to the rule of that number so and our classrooms are different size uh you know some classrooms say at the high school you can put 20 22 kids in kind of difficult in some of our elementary classrooms to get 22-23 in there it gets a bit crowded so uh a little gun shy and i'd be happy to suggestions from the board on how maybe there's some guidelines we could write up to follow you know listen to teacher feedback listen principal feedback on those type of decisions would be my guess and my thought um utilize virtual strap through technology between buildings this ties in with some of our plans working again with that distance learning grant with offering physics and spanish through great bend high school we will have four classes next year that will stream between the two buildings accounting keyboarding forensics and consumer math we'll have those four streaming between the two high schools did i forget one consumer consumer personal finance what did i say sorry uh so we have that um the second this next one uh sharing teachers among the buildings so we kind of we already kind of have that going next year with some of the distance learning we are going to have a reading specialist next year that will help with reading at both ends of the district we are also looking at using 20 percent of our esther money has to go to uh helping at-risk students we're looking at hiring a family engagement coordinator and we do have an interview for that on wednesday so i think that could be a positive thing district-wide we do have a a curriculum adoption guidelines right now they do need to be updated and tweaked that will be one of our summer activities one of our problems that we have is we do charge a textbook fee but that textbook fee only brings in nine to ten thousand dollars a year and the sad part is for adoption of say a reading curriculum for an elementary building might cost you 24 25 000 just for one building so if you did both buildings you're looking at maybe 40 to 50 thousand dollars we've got to figure out a way to either raise a little bit more money in our textbook adoption uh textbook fund because it's just those textbooks materials are not getting any cheap uh click the page here staff recruitment just develop incentives and supports to improve teacher recruitment retention i think we did one of those tonight we approved a thousand dollars retention bonus uh looking at daycares uh have a meeting with j.r robel on the 4th of april for possible daycare and uh the old elementary school in cleveland also working with j.r hopefully uh in williston uh they he's got some grants that he worked throughout a great bend to help uh facilitate those type of programs they come in he's an architect and he'd come in and redesign that space and there's some money that we can get the problem we're going to have is staffing trying to find people to run a daycare not it not easy uh incorporated new innovative ideas with teachers throughout different approaches to professional development you know i feel like our principals are pretty open to allowing teachers to explore professional development one of the things that i kind of tie into that is teacher recruitment and we're we have a teacher that's going to be at least one teacher that's going to be in the teacher apprenticeship program at wwe it'll allow them to teach and go to college at the same time there's a possibility we'll have two in that program next year so uh we've done the transition to teach and that's worked out sometimes and sometimes not so much but i do think you know there's things we can do to try to encourage people to come and teach in our district uh student programming and opportunities uh elementary level career fair day aligned with state career pathways we've not done that one yet at high school work to get instructors certified and identify a location where students can get certified send students to barton county community college for industry certification we are working with barton county they got their plumbing their construction uh electrical that where we can send students to also our district and i don't know if this is on the next one or this one we currently offer cte classes such as power structure and technical systems family and community community consumer services animal science information support services restaurant and event management then we also have power some of the same ones at wilson comprehensive agriculture science and these are offered like i said both buildings graphic design business construction design marketing business finance so we have quite a few cte pathways that students can take advantage of while they're enrolled in our district uh identify the students area of strength and interest through fellow which is career cruising and we currently do that our counselors uh work with our students through that program and hopefully find a career path that interests them and then base the classes they take in high schools off that you know if they want to go into construction they need to take some woods classes if they want to go into uh you know become a doctor you take your math classes and your science classes so we kind of map to help them map that all out and i believe they share that information with their parents at the conferences in the spring so student programming and opportunities work with upper level course teachers do identify desired experiences that align with student interests uh tried to work on some of that we do not have much of that in place right now uh we you know i think that's something that is on the horizon that we've got to do a better job of one of the things that i've often thought about is having like i said a business summit where business leaders from around here come in h b wilson communication volley manufacturing culture manufacturing come in and say what do you if a kid comes to you straight out of high school what do you need from they're going to say we need them to show up on time and be here every day but we don't maybe they'd also like to have them be able to you know work together as a team solve problems a lot of times they can give them the other skills they need but they need some of those soft skills uh identify experiences for freshmen and sophomores that expose students to a variety of careers i've not to my knowledge have we done anything on that one yet either i didn't think we'd get them all done like the time you developed them but uh we're getting there uh student program and opportunities we are working like i said we have fifth grade go to starbase we have students that regularly go to like barton county uh shine bottoms uh and we've had the science van maker maker out i think last year at the end of the year mrs ozier and wilson they went came in for a day and kids did steam activities all day we can always improve in that area again i looked at other districts and with the exception of some very large districts we are right up there on cte classes the ones we really need to make sure that we are doing are ones that are the high need you know the nursing field the uh service type fields those are areas where we really need to spend our time focusing because that's we can get we can get full funding for those because they're of high need uh positions so excited about some of our opportunities so that we do provide students uh student programming and opportunities continue to work with teachers to take relevant trips technology we have like i said we have robotics i put in a grant for drones with uh what up thank you so if anybody knows anybody at one oak i'd be happy that you could say give central plains the plug and let us get our drones um we're all we're always looking at new pathways we've added that one train to templeton restaurant event management safe serve or surf safe i was saying it backwards and like i said i've looked and i've asked other districts we're on par if not a little bit above some of the cte pathways that other districts offer and i'm going to credit our teachers for that uh mr ryan mrs locke uh lisa kreitz trina templeton i know i'm gonna forget somebody so and the others that do that i know i get to approve all of the pathways so i get a chance to read through them see all the steps that the students have to take in the courses they have to take so good stuff there and last one actually do some exploration around courses that need to be offered continue to build ones and i couldn't done on that we've worked on that we're not totally done but we have worked on classes that can go between two buildings so i feel like we're off to a good start on our strategic plan yeah there's some we haven't done yet but sometimes just work that's in the way of getting other stuff done any questions on any of that that's all i have for some tips thank you more discussion on our work sessions so this is just a continuation of the work session that we had and that discussion of addressing uh staff issues if we have them and what that means and other issues along the way and how do we plan that mr clark's kind of approach was okay so here's plan a if that doesn't work what's plan e and then plan c what's the priority that kind of thing and so we had that discussion um and obviously that discussion is the reason that we're now in the gym and so we just want to continue to have that and go from there i did give you a pack and i've been emailing you during the spring break some information uh this is more superintendent thanks taylor simpson for showing me how to do this on powerpoint of a flowchart of what could happen if certain decisions are made you also have budget numbers you have a gas utility bill bills for the building enrollment numbers you have our staffing issues that we have right now um i had a board member asked for that and i was in the process of doing it but i hadn't quite got there yet so thank you to my principals for helping me finish that today so you have quite a bit of information there that you also have wilson junior senior high school uh enrollment projections with some additional thoughts on putting sixth grade into the rotation let me know if there's any other additional information well first of all i do want to publicly thank mr clark and diane for the work that they've put in in this last week i know that we have as a board bombarded them with asking for information and asking questions and things and so i do want to appreciate that it's uh i'm sure not easy trying to keep up with all of our random thoughts that we have through the week but i do i do want to kind of have a discussion or just get people's thoughts or just share my thoughts i guess depending on where it goes but you know kind of the work session last time led to back to the discussion of moving the students from the 7th through 12th from wilson down to clapham and i do understand i mean as a district with this number of kids and we've had this discussion a thousand times i do understand the thought that that we have too many teachers for that number of kids and if you compare it to any district that that is the case but unfortunately and i said it in the work session it just that is what it is because of the distance that we have between the buildings it's not you know we're not three blocks away from each other and you know have these these two buildings and so i just i don't think and i've said it many times that we can survive as a district if we do that either direction and my my ask is of the board and of the communities is that when you have those discussions and you're thinking about that to think about it both directions that think about why you wouldn't want to or you know what the pros are of taking the five through or seven through 12 from wilson down to klaplin or taking the seven through 12 o'clock wilson and i think as far as i'm concerned or and as far as i think that if you take that and you say yeah we could combine those have less teachers have more funding in the general fund and looking at at that point makes sense but as soon as you start saying like okay let's move these kids here or these kids here it completely falls apart and that's just because of the distance and that there are so many different closer high schools no matter which direction that is and i think it's easier for all of us to say well i can solve this if the other kids have to do it and i don't want that for either side obviously being from wilson i don't want to do that because it will scatter everyone on the wilson side but i don't want to do that to clapham either because it will scatter everyone there and so just as my continuation of that conversation before and just having that thought process so mr clark staffing for next year what's you're feeling know what you wrote what's your gut feeling about filling positions uh find that page real quick the only one [Music] uh i think the math at central plains high school is going to be extremely hard uh counselor extremely hard special ed i think we have a lead uh secretary mr holmes three candidates were interviewing we're going to do this pear affair on april the 7th good idea well i hope we're going to invite them in have them shadow a parent for a few hours in the morning feed them lunch tell them what the benefits are of working for usd 112.
we have a motion awesome thank you mr bowell second second i'm gonna give it to miss mustang discussion i have a question on 10.10 regarding stuff i'm brooke so do i have to go before i upload this go to my board and discuss that with them that is a great question i do not know the official answer to that any chance you do this is uh mrs bishop i don't believe it it has to go to yours i believe it was already discussed with um dr gokey but it's a contracted amount so it um mr demarco the contracted amount with south bound how was that determined do you know i believe that was in conjunction with both districts dr gokey and dr gallagher speaking and coming up with that okay so okay so i think uh miss lima's question is more procedural which is is she in a position to vote on it at the table here um prior to having discussed it with her education i'm not sure why she wouldn't be um [Music] it was i don't know if they have questions or you know they have something oh yeah it wouldn't conclude you from still having those discussions with your own board determining at that point whether how you want to vote i mean like i said this is just this board approving you know i'm assuming uh underneath the references of tuition appropriate uh appropriations calculation worksheet so i'm assuming this was the development of the tuition amount based on the state guidelines so this is what it's proposed that's basically but i just wonder whether there was has to be any like discussion or if they had questions you know i that's why that's why i think you would have to approve it here and also approve it there right there will be a period of discussion with that board it has to be approved [Music] any other comments or questions i just have a comment on 10-5 i know we had um brought up an issue with the cafeteria and the lunches on a previous meeting i just wondered if there was any um follow-up with that or if you put anything back on we did and so roger mr zepco was the one who raised that issue and had been liaising with dr gallagher i think there's an opportunity so dr gallagher did meet to my knowledge with uh the provider who manages all that activity uh went through the concerns with them and was reassured that it'll be addressed uh i think there is an opportunity for us to do more as a body we choose okay right so if we want to become more involved in that conversation we can my suggestion would be that rather than trying to discuss that in open session uh with dr gallagher not president right we refer to our operations committee um and we can uh further discuss that you know at that time okay and again just like with any other committee meetings obviously we have to be mindful uh that if we're going to hit a forum that we advertise appropriately but anybody who wants to participate in the meeting from the board members is more than welcome okay so if we have more interest than just the people who are assigned to that committee let me know let mike know and we'll make sure that everybody has an opportunity okay thank you the last thing 1014 just say uh thank you for the donation as well absolutely it's amazing it feels like almost every meeting there's another donation always yeah so i'm very thankful for all of that and then on the the hvac project again you know with dr gallagher not being sure he would mention this but you know the idea that building and materials costs are still significantly higher than we would have expected so even though that project went out to bid with some realistic expectations none of the bids that we got back met those specifications so you know the motion around here would be to reject them and then we can revisit whether or not we're going to follow or respect the contracts or move forward any other comments or questions okay can we have a roll call please mr bell yes mrs yes miss lima yes mr minhas yes miss mussen yes mr januzzi yes okay we are up to other matters to come before the board and new business uh so i didn't receive any comments in advance but i do think this is the opportunity for us on each agenda uh to think about anything that either wasn't part of regular business or merits discussion um so i'm not sure if anybody has anything they want to raise now um if not maybe we can just say a few words about maybe the format of our meetings going forward and have you know a quick debate about how everybody feels about that so before we get deeper into arrival is there anything anybody would like to bring up all right so then briefly and you know this is something that actually came out of some of the new board member training that i attended lisa participated in that was through njsba um but really the idea that you know some of our meetings we move through actually all of our meetings we move through are based on a single agenda format i think it's specifying our policies by laws really it's structured around us doing business right so the a's and the mains and moving peaks forward i think to a certain extent that's necessary uh maybe to some degree every time we meet in public certainly so that we can keep the administrative team moving forward as they need to move forward but i also think that there are times and opportunities where we could be discussing more at the table um whether it's priorities for the budget whether it's reconciliations of our strategic plan whether it's key issues that are affecting um one or more of our our building level operations uh and i just think that it would be healthy for us to inject some of that conversation into these meetings on a wall forward basis um so i would just take any comments feedback that you guys have along the way um and then it's something that i would probably uh reach out to gwen and see if uh she was willing to give us some either advice or suggestions on how we measure what's out there right what structures i mean i i think it's a good idea for honestly for the public to see a little bit more back and forth from us to hear a little bit more of what we're thinking i know that for us can be a little uh intimidating at times to do do those things in public but i i do think you know most of us here who joined the board did so with a goal of more transparency and i know that the people the public is looking for that as well so if they were to see a little bit more of our discourse i think that would be really a really good idea and go a long way again i agree with that definitely and there's a learning curve to being a board member you don't know what you don't know until you don't know it and so just hearing conversations hearing discussions is very helpful to new board members i think this is the first step honestly and i know you're talking about a whole possibly a structure change but the first step that we have taken and should continue to go forward with is is more in-depth uh committee reports and then following them hopefully a little bit of discussion after the fact you know if if it's warranted of course you know i think that's kind of the beginnings of an a more open discussion and then we'll see we'll see if there is a structure that fits what we need right we don't know what's out there it doesn't have to be anything dramatic at first right okay any other thoughts or comments on that obviously not something that we need to decide tonight but you know something that i feel passionate we should start moving that direction so you know with your support i'll research some ideas get some feedback and then we'll talk about it here in public there you go all right okay um so at this point we are up to 13.1 which is now open to the public for general discussion so again i'll start with anybody from the floor in the room see if there are any comments before we take questions from online all right so uh we did get one comment from the public this is actually addressed to dr freeman it's from our bbea uh leader which is ewan paxson uh i'll just read it out for your benefit it says hello dr freeman while i could not be president tonight i wanted to welcome you to bound brook and look forward to meeting with you very soon [Music] very good okay we are up to item number 14.1 which is a move into executive session this will be under items number one and three they have a motion all right before we is there anything besides hips tonight there is not but the no okay go ahead but we will have to come back to session two well my question was we don't even have unless people have questions about the hip we don't have to go to executive we only go that people need to discuss them we can avoid the whole the void we can bypass that unless people have questions time saved will we have a quorum if either abstains from uh 16 point 16.2 she would end up staying from the middle of the tree is there anybody who would like to go into executive decisions and don't take what they said you know you you want to go and i don't want to put everyone but i according to high school which is why i didn't i would have seen from it okay but that was just because i didn't and the other thing that we could do is go into executive and allow you some time again the majority of you are yeah right okay so then we are going to move to go into executive session under items number one and three have a motion motion thank you mr ball a second thank you miss muss in home favor to finish the approval on the hip cases so stay tuned all right vp told me to unmute you're okay so we're back in sessions we are here to address agenda items number 15 and 16.
scrolling down so this is our student for teacher as you can see we've run pretty close to that 14 as an average 14 students for class we got a 13 6 in 2017 a 14 1 and 18 a 15 6 in 2019 a 14 5 and 20 and a 13.6 and 21.
and there's a combination of reasons one is summer school and the other is kids leave kids come and go especially in the summer and so a combination of kids possibly moving and then kids regaining credits in summer school put us at 64 um kids and then at the end of first semester we were at 60 at south which does not sound like a huge change but one thing that's really important there's a couple things that are really important one is that um it takes a long time if you especially if you fail multiple classes it takes a long time to get back on track because summer you can only there's two semesters so you can regain one credit in the summer and then we don't hold kids back per se the next year so if you're a sophomore you're going to take us history there are some things you can't just jump ahead but for the most part you're going to take english 2 you're going to take u.s history you're going to take a sophomore course load and then you might have one or two less electives in order to try to make up some of what you didn't pass but it takes time and because of the situation last year there were more kids that seemed to have more failures so it wasn't like i just failed one semester of math we had some kids that failed multiple classes so it takes some time but there's some really good news there which is looking at at the end of semester one half of the 64 that we started the year with passed everything first semester and i've been through all of those transcripts multiple times and actually a lot of them didn't just pass they did really well in their classes so it's clear that being back in a much more normal year face-to-face with the teachers and the supports really really helped um and then the last number there is there are 12 kids that if they if they pass what they're in right now what they're trying to recover this semester will then be back on track by the end of this semester too so we're definitely making some progress there yeah north's numbers are very similar in that we started with 42 we went down to 32 we had uh uh some students that were outplayed some students that have moved um and then by the uh fall uh we were at 30 um we had eight students who regained their credits from through summer school so um that helped the state doesn't recognize that right away um so you know officially our number doesn't change till later but like internal tracking we know that that was where we're at also we had 20 of our 30 students who did not receive a drnf in any of their courses first semester um which is exciting and um we'll have eight more that will be back on track right now some of them are doubled up in science and in social studies um we have a young person who's doubled up in english and science and social studies and is passing all of them which is great so um but as we talked about earlier we want students to be able to also you know pursue their passions and find you know careers so um you know we're hoping to help them make sure that they're not making those um the have those struggles again later um so that they can uh continue to take some courses that they want to take not the ones that they have uh if we move to the next slide we'll just talk a little bit about what we've been doing um and so um maybe hank has told you that at his opening he talked about carrying the load right that many hands make light work and that when we look at students who are struggling in school it is not just the teacher it is not just the chair it's not just the building administration it's it's everyone it's families it's students it's district administrators we all have to work together and so everyone kind of took some of their frustration wrote it down on a slip of paper we all threw it into the aisles and we collected it and could probably go to his office and pull out the suitcase as a reminder that he is helping us carry our load um and so when we looked at the freshman not on track data george and i did a lot of thinking about how can we put a face to the students right it's easy to think about the students as just data like that prior slide um so um you know we did it slightly different at both campuses but trying to put the face to it um at north we did an activity where you know we had counselors write down some things beyond like what are their dreams like what do they want to do for a living um what are some hobbies that they had south did while doing a different activity to something similar how do we make sure that before we look at the data we know that these are kids who struggled last year not just numbers that we're trying to correct um so that helped kind of frame our larger larger talk about students who struggled and then we started talking with the staff about how do we create partnerships right with calling home it's not just letting parents know that a student's failing your class but how do you have conversations that you build those partnerships they did a lot of work in their course teams under their department chairs to talk about like how do we support as a team what are the tier one classroom interventions for academics that we do as a team we also try to promote the awareness of the interventions that are that we already have built in our system office hours that while students were reluctant to go to office hours and be in the waiting room online you can go to office hours and you see a lot of students at both schools uh going before school for or after school for office hours we also have academic resource we have paper and we can give you stats on paper sometimes whole classes will go they turn their paper into paper.com and they get feedback from a teacher we also have a lot of use of that for students you know really late at night um in math and science um and then also our strive program and our nhs tutors have continued um and so as we talk about interventions it's not just uh about you know sending a note to see triple s but what are we doing in the classroom academically how are we communicating and also how are we teaching those um those soft skills whether or not it's organization or self-advocacy and making sure that kids are reflecting on what they're doing to make sure that they're staying on track um a few of the other interventions you've heard the student success coordinator mentioned a couple times tonight that's been a really really helpful position um obviously last year they were working a lot with families when kids were at home and not and whatnot but now that kids are with us they're still constantly working with families with kids with some of our interventionists in the building to really support kids also over the past few years you've probably heard about our common experience work so that work is really moving down the road and we're getting closer to the to the end i say that's not a great word for it because there's really never an end but of that work and so as a part of that work eliminating zeroes from the grade books designing and implementing reassessment policies late work policies putting limitations on homework weighting all of those things make a difference when you look at grading and assessment practices as well and then finally we had a great tool that ryan's going to show in a second developed by jim strzok here at the asc and keith devorkin one of our teachers that has time to work with data that has really allowed us in a whole new way to drill and in our department chairs and teachers to drill down on student data and look at trends and see across courses and and teachers can see for themselves their own data how kids are doing across the board in classes so if you go to the next slide we just um have a graphic of what the tool looks like i blocked out the student data that's that big square there but when i was talking with keith and jim one of the things that we talked about was the reason that schools don't use data to track interventions as regular as they need to is because it's hard to digest not everyone is a data person how do i draw the data how do i manage the data how do i ask the questions that lead to the questions that answer the questions that i need to know about the data and so um george and i brainstormed some things that we wanted to have sort of at our department chairs fingertips not as a sort of gotcha like look check each teacher and see how many f's there are in that class it's it's more so like are we seeing any trends do we see anything across the sophomore class is there something across a department is there something at a time of year um and so we had him jim and keith kind of break down this tool and you can see that you know we can divide it by building i can do it by course we can do it by federal race and ethnicity score we can look at whether or not they have an iep whether the free inducer at lunch and so we can do any kind of combination that we want as we're asking the questions we can just look at the latest report we can look at trends of a class over days we could pull up athletes um and also as we started using it people started asking for more drop downs which was great because then they were asking questions that they wanted to know the answer to so we did add in gender i think we added in counselor because the counselors wanted to be able to pull up their own data we added our el students and so we've had a lot of success with department chairs then being able to look at trends with their teams and taking some of the um the gotcha feeling that might come out of it and have a more supportive conversation of what are we doing together to make sure all students are being successful so as a result of that on the next slide you can see the reduction in the failure data from our freshman class so in the fall of 2020 uh there were 39 students at north that comprised uh 93 f's which is about seven and a half percent of the freshman class um and surprisingly um i you know you'd think that the first semester there would be more um struggle in getting used to that environment it actually wasn't it was second semester when we were actually going back and forth between the hybrid um and uh remote uh setting um and so we had 51 students with 109 apps which is about 9.8 percent of the class and that those datas that is why um our freshman not on track data went up but exciting um in one semester with the work we went down to 17 students that comprised of 34 fs in the freshman class which is a 3.2 percent um and again that is the staff working together and looking at numbers not just a feeling of what might be happening and so we're really proud of the work that the staff did to reduce that number and on the south side i will comment a couple things my my colleague who retired last year dr walsh rock some of you probably know him he started keeping freshman failure rates at south by semester back in 2002 2003 so 20 years ago i have data that goes back um and at that point we were running around 15 to 19 percent a semester um and so we began doing some targeted after we had a few years worth of data we started doing some targeted work back then i couldn't even remember all that it was i was a department chair at the time um but we brought those numbers down and in the 9 10 school year we happened to see a major drop and that year we got down to eight percent which was by far the lowest we had ever been and that was the only time we had eight percent and since that time it's always hovered around 9 10 11 12.
