Um Pardon me, I just had a couple notes I wanted to Well, um it disturbs me that if this goes through uh basically in order for a kid to get a public education at Chico Unified Schools, they will be required to be on film and to be um have their image stored in a you know, uh location not controlled by our school and honestly stored at all. Um My question for the board is um with whatever security system is in place, is there a reason that footage needs to be saved beyond a week? You know, is there some kind of greater security concern? Um I understand wanting to have eyes on on potential problems that have gone down, but I'm not sure why footage needs to be stored at that uh extent. Just because we can store things doesn't mean it's necessarily for the best um of all involved.
We should pursue that. It's also something we could probably get support from from the MMA. I mean they are they did their report in the fall. They gave their recommendations and they're always looking for ways for communities to band together to support the work that they're doing and I think this is something that would be very helpful. Yeah, that's what I said. >> yeah, I I agree and and that's one of the things I think the state depends on. Um part of their strategy whether it's spoken or not is um they depend on us staying 351 individual entities, cities and towns. Um because that does diffuse and I'll just use the term political um force if you will. Um but if you start banding together, if we start you know, banding together as as communities and as one voice um I think that's where we'll see some movement.
I I obviously don't want to get ahead of myself, but but but I think this is the kind of situation where Westwood hasn't hasn't, you know, hasn't won a ton of games this season. They've only won five. They were they had the lead. They lost the lead in the last inning. Might be one of those situations where they start to get a little bit down. Um, so I think this is a huge inning to try and put another three or four runs across. Um, and and maybe suck the life out of Westwood a little bit if at all possible. >> Yeah. And we're going to get the senior part of this lineup in Czeman, Cox, and Herder who all had pretty big roles in that last inning, including Herder who had the RBI double off the center field fence. an absolutely huge hit by Quinn uh last inning.
>> You can always try it and then Yeah. If it's not working If the meeting's 3 hours long then you know >> Well, I just envision that's probably going to be much longer. >> It'd probably be I mean, I'm assuming it would be [clears throat] an hour and a half. Um well, and I think you know, as the budget season starts we're going to have to do [clears throat] special meetings anyways and I think it's a whole different beast. So, maybe we try it and if it doesn't work Okay, can we get Can we get a motion on the table then? Yeah. Right. Without neglecting it, but right. Yeah, exactly. Okay. So, we have the language of a motion? That's close enough. Um I move that the board approve of the finance and facilities committee restructure as draft draft as presented. Oh, wait. No, to aren't we combining the the This motion is to combine the So, you can do both.
>> Um so being this is a different it sounds like a different program. Correct. So when I was reading up on this um according to this link it says that they will include restorative practices training. Um I don't know what that means. There wasn't a whole lot more information regarding that. Um I did hear from someone who attended a recent conference that this seemed like theory in the different Um, so I'd like more information. Um, and I'd also like to know if we can make a motion to table this item and then um, you can request an addendum to give us an opt out. Not what we thought it was. motion tables. Is there a second? >> I'm not sure in in discussions with Story on this particular grant. It is their grant to fund uh really their Native American Native success coordinator team up there.
Uh I also just want to say again to kind of echo what some of the other folks are saying. Um Uh we don't know who's among us. Um I don't mean to sound paranoid, but uh a colleague that I worked with closely ended up getting uh arrested for child pornography. Um a They work among us and I don't It doesn't make me feel very secure about my child going to school somewhere where his image is going to be stored somewhere where if a hack happens either his privacy is violated or you know, it's just it's Why? I guess is is my big question. Is what is the value that we're getting out of this and does it pay off for the risk? Thank you. Thank you. Bye. Thank you. Hey, Addison Winslow. I I just want to say I think that all the previous speakers have some really good points about this and not that it's it's a perfectly um easy thing to deal with.
Yeah, I think that's definitely something we should do and maybe we should reach out with a letter to or an email to the FinCom and to the school committee and ask if they would like to participate in that. Yeah, and just to bring that up we used to meet on a quarterly on a monthly quarterly it was the chair and the vice chair of school committee select board and finance committee met with the town manager and the superintendent. And now granted some of that was when things were a little more contentious between the different boards. But we lost that conversation that was on an ongoing basis as we headed into this whole you know this whole process. So that would be something that might also be good to reach out because yes the override has passed but as we know there's still issues within our community in regards to how we do things and and how we fund things and and what our community thinks.
That thing was a rocket. It it hit the base of the fence. Um and and Rebecca, as I said before, Rebecca is a is a great contact hitter. Um someone who typically gets her bat in the ball. So, let's see if she can get us rolling here. Um you know, again, one of these three gets on and we're spinning to the top. So really be good if they can if they can get this thing going here in the bottom of the fifth. >> Yeah, Criggsman has reached in both of her plate appearances. Infield single her first time up. She walked last time and scored. First pitch to her is popped up into shallow center right center. A dive attempt by Rafon and it just missed her glove. Might have got a piece there and it will be another base hit for Creman but great effort there.
You can do >> Oh, we can You can make one motion to combine the committee and approve the schedule or we can do two separate. >> I thought it was two separate cuz it was two different agenda items. We Oh, yes. You're You already said that. I'm sorry. >> It's all good. Yes, first Yeah, no, we're going to do two separate. So, let's start with that. You're correct, Aaron. Yeah. Yes. So, first make the motion to combine the committees. Okay, so I move um that the board No, I mean approve the approve the finance and facilities committee restructure as presented. I'll second that. All right. Do we have discussion on anyone else? All those in favor, please indicate by saying aye. Aye. Any nays? All right, six nothing. All right, thank you very much. Now. >> [laughter] >> On to agenda item Let's see. I lost my agenda.
Um the the services the other way I'll take you back all the way to 2019. and I sat there and and worked with the county or watched the county work on curriculum packages. Um those are not in place in this district. Um I what they're offering is the ability for our title six coordinator which I think is the Indian education program. Title six is a federal grant. Title six send our be able to have our title six coordinator to go to some trainings and some networking meetings that allows him to gather like different activities that are Native American students can start participating in um engagement opportunities to engage with outside u cultural activities. ities come on. We had one at at Anderson High School uh cultural awareness day just early this last two weeks ago. Um it's those kinds of activities. It is not getting any curriculum from anybody or >> so there's no changes to the curriculum.
These are emerging technologies and people are trying to come up with the ways to put them into place for for good reasons in a lot of respects and and the city of Chico has has some contracts with similar um companies that I I don't trust very much and I think there's good reason not to trust them very much and uh I don't know exactly how you can um change like the the framing of your arrangement with them, but I think it's worth considering doing something besides what you're offered by the company. Uh I would rather like you're not the only school district dealing with this. Like every everybody is at at the same time and um would rather be part of a negotiated agreement on different terms and conditions and be part of a negotiated settlement agreement once something goes wrong and and we're just one of the many school districts that that have a lawsuit to try to make up for that.
So the the conversation needs to continue on an ongoing basis and not just when we're having problems. I couldn't agree more. Thank you. Thank you for bringing that up Claudia. I do have that notebook. With all the meetings information and stuff and a lot of good information came out of it. We used to meet in Medway. At the uh >> Yeah, at the mayor's. Yes. Yep. And one of the select board members was the owner of the muffin house. That's very true. So does that mean there's muffins Sounds like it. Muffins at the meeting. >> Yes there were. Very good muffins. Liaison updates and we have a list of them. Um >> [clears throat] >> Affordable housing trust that was that was uh I represent the BAA's on there. Uh we are meeting May 27th uh to go over some things. We have two individuals who uh interested in becoming members.
Yeah, a heck of an effort by the right fielder at number 11. I I I'm not going to yell it too loud, but I hope she can hear me say that was a great effort. Another ball in no man's land uh for the Clockers. They just they they haven't hit the ball necessarily hard every time, but they have put the ball in a really hard place for Westford to be able to make a play as Cotch tries to lay down the bunt, misses the bat, and it's nothing and one. So, both seniors or two of the three seniors have a hit. So big spot here for Cotch. Try to get her first hit of the game. >> Yeah, love to see Taylor come through here with a little base hit, but a sacrifice punt also wouldn't be a terrible thing here >> as she tries to lay it down again and it's nothing in two.
So, I guess the first one >> Oh, there it is. Oh, yes. Yes, so committee communications are we still okay staying Wednesday the 3rd? Okay, but are we still say Okay, saying Wednesday the 2nd of the month and then business operations 2nd Tuesday of the month. Yeah, I mean we're just are we going to keep communications is communications going to be a different time? >> So, should we separate policy and communications, right? Did you want to speak to that? At all? Or did you want to say what your opinion is? Sure. I mean Are you going to just say what we No, no. So, so I had um I had shared some thoughts around the >> Can I just ask a question? Is this to vote? I just want to make sure >> right cuz it's I'm just I'm kidding. >> I'm not sure it's on that agenda, right?
It's just funding for our current employees. >> My understanding is that the Native we had in the past. It helps us with suspension rates. It helps us with ADA. It gives education to um tribal families that their kids have the ability to go humble for free tuition. Um because you know this is one page of and then we have one email or two emails exchanged. Um I'd like to just know more of what the curriculum consists of because it feels like you know >> but I would like to because many districts have adopted ethnic studies. um first the state said you have to do it and then they realized it wasn't funded so you couldn't force us to do it so we our district could not adopt the ethnic studies class so there no class that any curriculum the county wanted to do could be implemented our our title six Indian coordinator does not have achievement he can't teach so there's no venue for anything that could be going out the counties or state level to reach our students um you Nobody knows I'm Native American myself.
So thank you. I just got to say that also on the Chico City Council. I just want to say that we had some really great speakers and although I'm mostly here to speak on the next item which I hope people stay for. I hope that you will take seriously the concerns of parents and community members about emerging technologies in the school room. Thank you. I just want to make sure I'm seeing everyone. Any other public comment? All right. Thank you so much for sharing tonight. Okay. This time um We obviously as a board will have an opportunity to discuss this but is there a motion at this time? I would like to make a motion to direct the district to install Ricardo cameras utilizing AWS for storage but only enabling the vehicle history feature at this time. Do you want to clarify what that means in regards to any facial recognition features?
We have one open position, associate member. Uh so they've been invited to the meeting, and hopefully we we get one or both of them stay interested and and continue working with us. That's what I have right now, and there's still progress at the the Main Street location for the Habitat for Humanity construction area over there. They were They were going guns of fire the other day. They were doing a lot of in inside work, and now they're going to be doing the the out the outside sheeting. Siding that. Good for them. They That's moving along. Hopefully that uh maybe by the end of the summer that they'll have somebody in there, which would be very very nice. Uh Ashland Cultural Council. I do not have an update for that. Okay. >> [laughter] >> Well, that's easy enough. That's fine. Yeah. Uh I have been in touch with the chair, and we will be uh hopefully communicating soon.
So now you most likely won't go back to the bunt in a two strike count. >> Yeah, tough spot here for Taylor now with with two strikes on her. Uh, you know, trying to get that bunt down is not the easiest thing to do against a kid who's got some pretty good velocity in Cahill. But let's see if she can put her bat in the ball and and get her first hit of the day. Here comes the O2 and a swing and a miss. So, a three- pitch strike out. That's the first strike out of the afternoon for Alexis Cahill. So after the one out base or the leadoff base hit, there is one away for Herder who as we mentioned had the double last inning. She'll take a first pitch low for ball one. As we talked about, one of the most important things was to get the runner on to be able to get back to the top of the order in this inning uh to keep it going.
I just want to make sure that And that's fine. I think we just have to do that. I just want to be This is about the dates of the committee meetings. Right. So, I just want to make sure we're in compliance with that. If we got to add it then a more detailed discussion at the next board meeting around other thoughts and ideas. No, he's right. Right. It could be either one. All right. That's fair. Got it. Okay, where are we? Which one are Exhibit two. Exhibit two. Oh, draft two. >> Two. I I did I'm okay with the dates. Um I didn't know if we wanted to make other edits to that schedule. Um cuz I I know we Joy wasn't in the room, but the personnel negotiations committee, I mean Joy, you're still listed on that. I don't know. >> Oh, yeah, no, yeah, we have to change that.
Right now we have 75 students in our district Native American. It's about 4.83% of our district. Our native students average 15 points below standard and math and it's kind of funny. It's 117.8 points below 72 points below. Um the college career indicator is only 15.4% compared the rest of our district 47.5%. This is a shocker. The graduation rate for a daily student is only 61.5%. Suspension rate is 18.6% and our average for district 12%. Chronic absenteeism is 45.6%. Highest of any ethnicities in our district. Um, so those some of those kids need help and I totally agree. I'm not, you know, teaching white supremacy or, you know, reclaiming land. I'm not that myself. Like I like I started with this comment, there's no venue, there's no classroom, there's no ability for the state curriculum or the county curriculum to come into our classroom. But there's any we can improve our students attendance rate and suspension rate and overall scores and hope the board be open to looking for that.
