I I think these guys represent that here. I think that other contractors can too, but it's important that we pay close attention to um to what that is. So, I I hope you take that into consideration and thanks for having us here. Thank you to our partners on the Chico City Council for getting up there and speaking with us tonight. Um I really wish we had the videos. I think you guys would have really would have really opened your eyes and I hope you get on the Construction Wage Watch and check out the videos that are on there. I think our ask is simple. Use the information we have given you and make the best decision, not just for your own dollar, but for your community and your students as well. We want Chico Unified School students to become members. We want them to become apprentices and have a pathway to the middle class.
Anybody who's ever seen it just knows it's quite quite an all-American sight. Uh staff get into it just as much as the kids and and they get into costumes. But in any case, I was notified today that uh Ashland was a finalist for that. Um and so if we do end up winning, um we will have a you know, pictures and and our story um as part of that exhibit uh and waiting June uh throughout the summer. So That's great. Congratulations. >> fingers and and wish uh wish us luck. The town uh the town getting some uh much much deserved recognition and and love for one of the favorite activities of mine and I and I think I can say the staff and the community through the year. Very nice. >> That's awesome. Yeah, that's great. And I have to say you're right. I think um you know, I happened to come into town hall that day and the staff even the days leading up to it, they're all buzzing about it and and uh every day that I came in there would be a new decoration here, a new decoration there.
Uh as you know Marathon Deli is a great supporter of Ashland Athletics. They have been sponsoring our softball games throughout the year. Uh, so what we have been doing is we've been naming the King Kong sandwich offensive player of the year and the gobbler sandwich defensive player of the game. So we will have that responsibility at the end. But that only happens if they win. So if we lose, we do not pick a King Kong or gobbler player. So we've got to get this win first and then we can talk about who it is. But certainly Laura Klet is the leader in the clubhouse for the King Kong award. >> Oh, certainly. And I mean when a when a sub at Marathon Deli is on the line, I feel like that just it adds to the the pressure, you know. >> You know, maybe this is a good good time to ask for they're not getting the sandwich.
Uh It's what's best for us. It's what's best It's what's best for all of us and the community. The men and women building our community shouldn't be the ones that are taken advantage of. Major part of that is working together to weed out these bad actors and secure responsible spending. So, we've given you a lot of information here about us, who we are, and what we do. We would love to continue this educational journey and invite your students to our training facilities. Some of which some of you have already had the opportunity to see firsthand, so you know just how fantastic it is. We can get with the board and work on the details, but we want you to know we are partners in this community and as such is our goal to lift everyone up around us because rising tides raises all ships. And getting through downtown when you see like It took me half [laughter] an hour to get here that night actually. Businesses have Right. It used to just be town meet town hall and now it's all of downtown that gets involved. It's great. The those blinking lights that you just push and it automatically the lights blink and it turns after all stop. It all people did was push that all night long. Like, "Yeah, this isn't really >> [laughter] >> effective way to move traffic." So Claudia, we're all wondering what your costume is going to be this year. Yeah, well you'll you'll know soon enough. Oh, I've got a I've got a Heat Miser one. So Yeah.
Uh maybe they should. They're just getting the the recognition of the award. >> Oh, they should get like a free voucher there. >> I love I love where your head's at. We're going to have to make a call to our friends over there at Marathon Deli to see if we can present these girls with their free sandwich of choice if they are elected the player of the game. Heck of an idea, Jake. As Ava Vendetti will take ball one just miss from Cahill who starts the sixth on the circle. In the circle is it in or on? >> In the circle. >> Used to saying on the mound so it's a little bit different terminology. Here comes the 10. Will I owe you? >> Well, I owe you a baseball game. I made that promise. I said if you come join me do a softball, I'll come join you do a baseball game.
Are there any questions from the board? Madam President, I don't I don't have a question, but I I do want to make a comment about the importance that Chico Unified has always placed on getting our students with ex- Excuse me, experience with the trades. Um our CTE programs and the capstone classes that go with them. Um you know, our desire is to get our students familiar with how to get into things like your apprentice program, and I did attend one of your presentations. It's been a while. Been a couple years. Um it is um it is in fact how the middle class develops. It's by having trained tradesmen. And I appreciate your support for that. Um I know that Ms. Kissel uh Julie Kissel our um uh some kind of long name. >> [laughter] >> That we have utilized um things like, you know, we're building and remodeling some schools.
No comment. Nope. >> [laughter] >> Board reports. Ms. Yolanda. Well, as I said, I I sorry to have missed, but not sorry at the same time. >> [laughter] >> Uh being truthful here. Uh I do have a bunch of stuff coming up. When I came back, I immediately jumped in and helped out with GreenUp Ashland on May 4th. It's I mean, I know it's couple weeks away, but it was always it's always a great event. Couple things coming up. Uh MetroWest Regional Collaborative, we're having an in-person meeting and walk through downtown Wellesley. I forget why, but we're meeting there. Um It's so it's It was decided [snorts] why? I don't remember the specifics as to why we're doing a walk through in Wellesley. >> Yeah, you sound like me. >> what I'd like to what I hope what I'm hoping to plan is when it's all our wires are gone and downtown is done is to invite people to come here and do a walk through here.
If as long as the schedule allows it because my priority is these softball games, as you know, >> the I think we they made a plan of if the baseball playoff game isn't too far, they were going to try to make the trip out there. Me, and George would be a great trio to do that. It' definitely be fun. And the team has been a had a good good season under Coach >> Mess. Yeah, they're a fun team. I I I have enjoyed watching uh Coach Messer's teams over the years. Um I I love baseball. I I love softball. Um but I always enjoy watching the way Coach Messer's teams play. They play hard. They play rugged. And you know, some great kids in that team as well. You know, Chris Bratica is a tremendous senior. Oi Laru, a great a great kid. Uh a lot of seniors in that team actually.
And we're giving some of our students an opportunity to observe what's going on. Um I I know when McManus was under construction, we had some students out watching the big equipment. The students were absolutely um mesmerized by the fact that there were even some women out there operating those big pieces of equipment and that, you know, yay team. Um so, I do appreciate the fact that you showed up here tonight and and that you support, you know, the trades and getting our kids an opportunity to become involved with the trades through our CTE programs and other things that that are available and so important. And thank you to the city council members. I've met Addison, but I hadn't met you. Thank you. I I wanted to say also if uh Sean, if you'd step back up to the microphone. I was when I think of carpenters, I think of like swinging hammers, but actually carpentry your union represents so much more than just um you know, somebody with a hammer.
Uh the reality fair is coming up on Friday, May 29th and I believe four of us now are participating in that this year, so that's always a fun thing. Um let's see. Mass Select Board, I have a I'm I'm I represent District 5 on the Mass Select Board Association. We have a meeting coming up on June 1st. Uh we talked already about timing of graduation. The other thing I'm going to be helping out with this year is the Select Board new member training. It's going to be happening in Devens on Friday, June 12th. And you know, even if you've been a member for a long time, I think it's always a great place to reconnect. So, if you want to start having conversations with other people, you just register. Uh the other thing that I just noticed and I don't remember the date, but I saw MM MMA is doing a Zoom virtual meeting about what to do when your override passes and the town has said yes and how you move forward with that.
Mark Merml's team I believe is a senior as well. >> David Jampolski, Derek Asenko as well. Yeah, they have a lot of guys leaving, but they also have a lot of a good junior class as well. Michael Shriber, Jared Grumbum. Jared Grumbum was their best pitcher. >> He He's potentially I I would think that he has to be considered right. >> Oh, that was smoke, but what a catch. That shortstop by Walsh. It just came right to her. >> Yeah, that's that's another good barrel by Vendetti. She's been she's been uh tough luck today. Uh she probably could be three for four. Instead, she's one for four. She's hit the ball hard a couple times. Actually, her probably her her weakest hit was her head. >> It was her. It was a blooper into center. And same with Kyra. That one skyed into center field.
And so, could you talk tell um could you talk about like what are all the different jobs that a carpenter might do? Absolutely. And actually I'm going to actually have some uh reading material for you. It actually explains all of our principal crafts. Um like as you said, being a carpenter isn't just uh a nail and a hammer. It's uh multiple multiple principal crafts that we have now. Everything from uh concrete to metal stud framing to millwrights to pile driving uh floor laying um being a carpenter is is a a broad spectrum. Now, there's >> So, tell tell us what is mill writing? What what is it? >> Millwright would be So, you you you look at your factories. Say you look at maybe your cereal factories or uh maybe your sawmills and all of the machinery that goes along with that. Those are millwrights.
So >> I've already registered. >> registered. I just saw it real quick as I was wrapping up some other stuff. >> too. So I highly recommend that we all go listen to that one. Um the one thing I wanted um non-election thing that I wanted to just bring up is that um Friday, June 5th, we are supposed to be having um a meeting with our legislative delegation, Michael.
Cole says she has it and she does. That is a one pitch out number two. >> Yeah, I I think Kyra swung a bad pitch. I think that was up at her eyes a little bit. I not not a great not a great pitch to swing at. Little overaggressive there on that first pitch. Didn't look like a strike. Ends up flying out u and really a big spot. That's too bad cuz now they're down uh to their last out of the inning. There it is. Luri Colette who is a triple shy of the cycle as she smokes INTO CENTER AND IT'S GONE FOR THE second time today. She doesn't want the cycle. You weren't a two home run game. I I have to tell you this has been an unbelievable offensive performance by Laura Colette. What a showing by her. Two home runs, a double, a single.
That's actually technically a carpenter. Interesting. >> Mhm. Conveyor belts, um working in uh car factories, things like that. Interesting. And then also I wanted to say you mentioned um that you uh partner with Chico State. Um I would really love to see it matriculated down to like Butte College and certainly with with our CTE program as um member Robinson speaks about and so um what I I'd love to see what that could look like um for our students in Chico Unified. Absolutely. Absolutely we do. We want to see that, too. We want to see all the high school students have this pathway and we want to see that and I think the best way we see that happening is by raising these standards and making sure we're giving them the opportunity in the future to be able to come back and work on your schools.
And that's from 11:00 to 12:00 and typically the chair and vice chair attends that, but that's class day. So I just wanted to just throw that out there to see if that if we want to try to move that date or if that's I don't know what time class day is or if it's over at 11:00. Actually, it starts at 9:00. Typically Yeah, I I actually have a another engagement that day, so I would like to see if if we could move it. Okay. All right. Michael, what do you think? Uh she is just pouring it on. What an amazing week. If if she is not if she is not the Metro West Daily News player of the week right now, I don't know how you possibly get that award. And I hope someone's calling the globe after today's performance because th this is just a game that you don't usually see out of a kid. >> Unbelievable. I mean, came in batting .292, four hits today, two home runs, and yeah, I think a two home run game plus the double and single might be a little bit better than the cycle. You might not get to say you hit a cycle, but you hit two home runs. >> The the only thing that's unfortunate is she did her job, but nobody was on. So, both home runs have been solo shots. really too bad that that they didn't have anybody on base for her >> as Kazadian smokes it into center field in front of Poles for a roped base hit and another two out hit.
Cuz we can pump out a thousand apprentices, but if there's no job at the end One of our goals here was to talk about the pathways to the apprenticeship, but I don't think it's fair to talk about the pathways to the apprenticeship if we don't talk about how to protect those pathways as well. So. Well, for sure. I mean, I feel like uh we want to think about a whole student from before they reach our schools to after they leave our schools. So, I um and and again that's why I think it's great to have that connection to Butte and then on into Chico. Absolutely. And and beyond. Mhm. This isn't this isn't >> Thank you. technical information, but um I've I've had and some of you have, too, the opportunity to go see the um program in Fairfield, I believe, um and it it is fantastic um what you can do for um young and old alike um to to go into a field that is absolutely meaningful.
Hello. Um let's see. Uh I will I will Oh, I I met with um last week I met with the citizens group that uh had some questions about procurement. Uh I'm sure a few folks came before us. I We met a couple of representatives of that group uh met with myself and Beth Reynolds. Uh we have follow-up meeting in the next few weeks. Uh answered a few of their questions. They're going back to to clarify a few things uh and bring back a few more questions. Um I'll be attending the reality fair on May 29th. Uh and I guess graduation class day um as well. Um I want to do a couple of thank yous. First off, Joe, thank you so much uh for your chairmanship this year as well. And uh one thing I just want to just on a personal note uh as many of you know, uh member of my family was struggling with a very uh with a life-threatening health issue over the past few weeks and I want to extend my thanks and gratitude uh to my colleagues here on the board uh and also a lot of the citizens of this town who reached out and um were very kind uh to me and my family during that time.
