Thank you. for the last time this year. As always, thank you for your continued support of Granite. Maroon and Gray lead the way. And Apple Valley High School, Effie Avula. All right. Good evening, Superintendent Nelson, President Buchanan, members of the board, and attendees. My name is Effie Avula, and I'm the ASB line president at Apple Valley High School. Before I begin, I want to take a moment to acknowledge something that makes tonight especially meaningful to me. This will be one of the last times I have the privilege of standing before you in this setting. As graduation gets closer, that reality has made me reflect on how much Apple Valley High School, our programs, and our students have meant to me. It's truly great to be back tonight to share everything happening on our campus because, as always, our Sunundevils have been busy, successful, and full of pride.
I am pleased to present the Janice Lucasy scholarship to Tatiana of Diva, whose dedication to education and future reflects the spirit of this award. Tiana, as you continue your journey, may you carry forward Jan's legacy by embracing opportunity, pursuing your goals with confidence, and using your gifts to uplift others. Congratulations, Tatiana. May your future be as meaningful and impactful as Jian's legacy. Good evening. Um I'm a member of PEO also uh chapter DS and um I want to let you uh tell you a little bit about PEO. Uh PO stands for philanthropic educational organization. It was founded 157 years ago at Iowa Wesling College and is one of the largest community-based women's organizations in North America. There are about 6,000 chapters in the United States and Canada and locally we have nine chapters. Through its six philanthropies, PEO has given nearly $462 million in financial assistance in loans, grants, and scholarships to more than 129,000 women.
We put an email out to your school principals who who get them every year. It's always school 12, 17, 4, 15, 11. Those are our low-income schools that are usually the ones that have the the greatest need. We do do a giveaway. We do have families that come and pick out school supplies. So, there's usually about 1,200 children every year that get our school supplies. So, it's we don't make a big stink. I don't always come here to tell you that because we really want to protect the identity of the children who are getting it because there is such a thing as being bullied, and it's like, you know, if you're getting something free, the other kids are saying, "What's the matter? Your mama can't work?" You know, so we don't want that, so we don't exploit children. We usually don't even take pictures of them.

As we celebrate this incredible milestone for the class of 2026, we are honored to welcome a very special guest. He leads our district with vision, dedication, and a deep commitment to student success. Please join me in welcoming our superintendent, Dr. Romano Chris here. >> Smile, guys. Aren't they awesome? >> You know what? This is the best high school graduating class. Period. Period. the state of Arizona and this country. I don't know about you, but I'll take this seven days of the week and twice on a Sunday. Good evening students, staff, families, and our entire Aaho Unified School District community. I am Dr. STO, your proud superintendent of KUSD, the best district in the state. Thank you for being with us tonight for this incredibly special celebration of our high school seniors as they move on to college and career readiness opportunities. At this time, I want to ask all of our high school teachers to please come up to the stage right now when I call your name so you get the recognition that you so richly deserve because you provided the guidance and dedication every single day all year.
We [music] march with feet on solid ground. We walk where no one wants to go on this untraveled [music] road. >> [music] >> And I can just expect it or choose to infect it. But once [music] the ink's in the water, it's too late to be selective. A single voice is enough to make sleeping giants wake up. To make armies put their hands up >> [music] >> and watch whole nations stand up. It's one belief, one spark, one faith, and one restart. And we can reboot [music] the whole chart before it all falls apart. When we scream, [singing] our lips don't make a sound. We [music] march with feet on solid ground. We walk [music] where no one [singing] wants to go on this untraveled [music] road. When we scream, our lips don't make a sound. [music and singing] We march with feet on solid ground.
But eventually I realized something important. If it truly is one system, then it is not made up of separate struggles. It is made up of connected ones. That means the exploitation overseas, the struggle here at home, the poverty, the soul-crushing feeling that you are trapped no matter what you do, they are just different expressions of the same oppression. That means that my plea to you tonight is not about self-sacrifice. It is about alignment. Because there is no real difference between a worker in Arizona and a worker in the Congo. The immigrant harvesting crops and the student drowning in debt are not enemies. They are people trapped in different levels of the same system. And if we're all trapped in the same system, then we're all equally capable of changing it. Because the moment we stop believing these struggles are separate is the moment we start to see where pressure can actually be applied.
Measure it by how you continue to grow. Congratulations, class of 2026. We are so proud of you and cannot wait to see what you do next. Before we start the celebration of our graduates, I would like to ask that each student have their special moment on the stage. Please ensure that your cheering does not cover up another student's moment. And with that, first row, are you ready? All right. Members of the governing board, Dr. Strereer, parents, and community, I am pleased to present Morirana High School's graduates of 2026. I certify that they have completed the requirements for graduation as established by the Arizona State Board of Education and the Morirana Unified School District Governing Board. Will the graduates in the first row please rise Diego Gustavo Asorio. Araceli Aelia Estraa. Yeah. David Alejandro A Costa Chavez, Marilyn Joanne Agia, Betha, Agira, Sebastian, Haven Cres, Ang Jace Le Alexander Rachel Anne Rose Aliano Cam Owen Allred Jenna Marie Alieri Noe Alejandro Amaya Pules Ethan Gabriel Dimatul William Curtis Anderson, Addison Emily Angel, Sebastian Frank Eeros, Jasmine Marie Ay, Emma Riley Atwell, Clay Charles Abashon, Haley Rose, Avanetti, Martine Isidoro Bisa Yael Ader Baltierz Rios Logan Dylan Banales Kevin Win Lynn Baralo Hamza Issa Khalif Baraui Andres Alonzo Baron, Jacob David Barton, Mara Marie Beasley, Joseph Lloyd Boymont, Haydens K.
Alexis Duck, who we uh hired last um month, uh did not start. She's not going to be working for us. Kelly Seebert, Park View Elementary teacher, is going to Belleville. Um Alina Metz, we got notified today she's going to leave education. Um it just And then Laney Randolph, our middle school sped para- professional is also leaving us. We've got those resignations. We have the following employments. Uh Rebecca Post is the recommendation to replace Jill Dickerson at the high school for the attendance secretary. Uh Morgan Gauch, Gauch, Park View para- Gauch. Gauk. With a K. Yes. Gauk, sorry. Morgan Gauk, Park View paraprofessional. She's going to be replacing um Alexis Duck. Uh Abigail Keely is a student worker for next year at Eagle Zone. Julia Webb, also a student worker for Eagle Zone. Um we're always looking for Eagle Zone workers, so if you have a child that's in high school that would be good with little children, that'd be awesome.
So, there are ways that we're still giving them paper. We're still um investing in things that that are high quality, but we will be able to reuse them for hopefully longer periods of time. We also at the middle school, oh, also we're reducing consumables like workbooks when we can. Um you will see that in some of our adoptions, we're suggesting a three-year period for consu for purchasing a consumable workbook. That three-year period over a six-year adoption cycle allows us enough time to have a good exemplar, use the pieces from that exemplar to set us up a good scope and sequence, not copy the material, but invest in our teachers in that time to build out our own resources, whether it be in Canvas or some other resource, and then by the end of year three, be ready to let go of that consumable or come back to you and say, "Look, Just like we said with novels, there are sometimes we have to have this, but so you'll see a three-year purchase instead of six, which obviously also reduces the cost.
What we're going to implement is that those students will either stay after school or come in early to school to get that intervention before or after. So, they'll have that uh 25 minutes of intervention built in right there with a lab that they can come and get support with. Um, I'm going to turn it over to Mrs. Ebbing to talk a little bit more about what we've done with our flex period and and how that will work. Right, so a little history with the flex period. Um, it was really it's born from our SRT that we implemented post COVID um, when we had to go to four lunches. So, that's a big piece of this as well. Um, so during that time we had to to do something with that fourth piece of time. So, that was obviously a time that we needed a lot more student resource time and to build programs um, that helped students with deficits coming out of COVID.
Comes a 3-1 and that one is to the backstop. So, that is the second walk for Ursaris, the one out base runner here for the Gators. Again, we'll see if the Gators try to take advantage of that base runner. It will be interesting to see if they change their tune a little bit. They did try to steal early with their lead-off hitter, but she was thrown out at second base. So, we'll see if they try to challenge Kyra behind the plate again. As Crystal Martinez digs in. She shows bunt and pulls it back. That is ball one. She had a little bit of a rough defensive inning in the first inning. So, we'll see if she can use her bat to help the Gators here. Always always tough to be able to come back and and try and get a hit after a tough defensive inning.
And um that Let's see, there was a student will partner with a delegation from another school for lodging and cost-sharing purposes. The second um informational item was the DOD grade 8 Washington, D.C. trip that is happening right now, May 20th to the 22nd. It's an opportunity for 8th graders to visit Washington, Gettysburg, um several museums, and um a visit uh Washington, D.C. There're 277 students that are on that trip right now. Um we also had from um Kristen Castellano, Ryan Murphy, and Azra Redzic a report on our K-12 multilingual learners um program. And um the presentation highlighted current enrollment numbers um and emphasized that uh student focus groups were conducted to elicit direct feedback um and future goals of the ML program uh were um given to us. The second report was um K-12 social studies. And again, an overview of the social studies program uh was given to the council.
Thank you. Did a fantastic job. And that those student feedback groups were uh one part of the way that we were just trying to elevate the voice of students in our school. Um our our second uh way that we were getting at the school really had to uh uh do with kind of student leadership. And there was an ad hoc group uh repres uh representative um district administrators, building administrators and teachers that actually began meeting last year in response to some uh incidents that had occurred. And that group kind of morphed uh their focus on this goal of belonging. So, I'd like to uh first invite up assistant principal Kristen Pals and math teacher Taran Dorbo to start to talk to us about um some of the work that uh the group did. >> We're both on the shorter side. So, um good evening everybody.
250 for the greenhouse? Yes. Wow. It's in really bad shape. >> Oh, yeah. I I understand. That's enough. >> had to We basically had to knock it down, rebuild the wall. It's like falling off the slab, which is the issue. >> Is it really? Yeah. Yeah. So, if you go inside, it's cracked. Um but we just got that. Cuz Wait. Two different greenhouses, maybe? >> Which greenhouse? >> bought a greenhouse at Homestead. Yeah. This is the one attached to the high school. Yeah. >> I was just going to say we just got that. That's why that's why I asked. Yeah. I am I have no idea when the last time the high school greenhouse was used. It wasn't used when I was there. Okay. Yeah. And it I I'm a couple years younger. It wasn't used when I was there as far as I know.

So, let's jump right into our Sunundevil news. Here are a few final updates from our last few weeks at Apple Valley High School. On Friday, May 15th, AVHS held field day for students who maintained a GPA of 3.5 and above. Students spent the day outside celebrating their hard work with food trucks featuring everything from matcha and asai bowls to tacos and loaded fries along with inflatable activities and time spent together as a school community. On May 7th, we celebrated our annual athletic signing day. We recognized student athletes across multiple programs as they committed to continuing their athletic careers at the next level. Congratulations to Nathan, Brody, Ireland, Haley, Payton, Jaden, Brooklyn, Savannah, and my twin brother Benji who will be attending the University of Dallas to play baseball. The very next day, students with perfect attendance were recognized with tacos from East Tacos as a celebration of their dedication and commitment throughout the year.
PEL also owns a 4-year college, liberal arts college in Nevada, Missouri called KA College. Um, I'm going to be giving out two scholarships. The first one is our from our local chapter DS scholarship and my PEO sister who recommended this person to the chapter could not be here tonight but this is what she shared with me about this person. Quote, I'm most impressed by her attitude for learning, helping others, and commitment to bettering herself. Working with her for a a Habitat for Humanity built site, I knew immediately that she had the drive, energy, and love for helping others that our chapter would want to support. Please help me in in congratulating Paley Jacobs. Now the second scholarship there's this this person knows that she's received it but we just want to recognize her uh and it's called the star scholarship. As I mentioned, we have six international philanthropies and the star is one of those six.
