Release your inhibition. I am just staring at the blank page. before you open up the dirty window. Let the sun illuminate the words that you cannot find. Reaching for something in the distance so close you can almost taste it. Release your inhibition. Feel the rain on your skin. No one else can feel it for you. Only you can let it in. No one else. No one else can speak the words on your lips. Catch yourself in words unspoken. Live your life with arms wide open. Today is where your book begins. The rest is still unwritten. Staring at the blank page before you. Open up the dirty window. Let the sun illuminate the words that you cannot find. Reaching for something in the distance. So close you can almost release your inhibition. Staring at the blank window that you cannot find. Reaching for something in the distance.

Good evening families, faculty, honored guests, and most importantly, the graduating class of 2026. I want to start tonight with a confession. Every single year around this time, the tradition happens. adults, parents, grandparents, teachers, and guests, even principles get together and we look at the younger generation. And a lot of times adults will say something along the lines of kids these days just don't make them like they used to. Civil civilization is in trouble. In fact, history tells us that people have been complaining that the next generation is going downhill for over 2,000 years. But I have a secret to share with the adults in the room tonight, courtesy of a fascinating psychological study out of UC Santa Barbara.
That was a spectacular moment and just creating the moments for those kids that they're going to remember for a lifetime. Also, a shout out to the retirees here as they wrap up the school year. Um, and then that Saturday is the Hope Walk. And so, this is the walk that we celebrate every year. It's always at Huntington North High School the past couple years. And we walk in remembrance of those who have died by suicide and with the goal to have zero suicides um in the future of Huntington. So, those are two upcoming events that always happen um in September. And so I just wanted to make sure that the board knows that you are all invited to those. I also wanted to offer um something that I do in the community. Um we received a grant a few years ago and I was able to get certified in mental health first aid.

All individual speaking will be limited to three minutes and there's a timer there. We will start that once you're settled at the podium. At any time during this meeting, written comments may be submitted to Cindy Rodriguez at my right. Speakers should conduct themselves with civility and respect towards others. Our first speaker is Haley Lamb. Over the past week, I've had multiple conversations with our school about our schools and school board. Parents, teachers, and former board members have shared their experiences of bullying, racism, and suppression, heartbreaking and uncomfortable conversations that have been ignored, distorting the law to avoid accountability, disdain, and defensiveness towards the party voicing their concerns. Your silence is compliance. The bullies are amongst us. I look forward to the student board members sharing their insight and speaking for their classmates. I hope that they are heard. Our previous meeting had 1500 views on on YouTube, multiple Facebook posts, and I'm sure hush hush conversations that ended as soon as you entered the room.
We are completely wrong. Science has proven that when adults think kids are getting worse, it's not wisdom. It's actually a trick of the brain, a cognitive illusion. The research showed that people who are incredibly well read are the ones who think kids don't read anymore. People who are highly intelligent are the ones convinced kids are getting dumber. And the truth is IQ scores have risen steadily for decades. As adults, we suffer from two major bugs in our brain. First, we are hyper alert to the things other people lack, especially in the areas where we personally excel. Second, our memory of our own childhood is a bit of a lie. We look back at our 14-year-old selves and unconsciously project our current adult maturity, skills, and wisdom onto our past. We forget that when we were in 8th grade, we were also clumsy to confused, trying to figure out who we were, and making plenty of mistakes.
And at 5:45 that morning, I did not want to go for my own run, but I said they're doing it, so I'm going to do it. and I ran by and saw them all bundled up and cold freezing in the morning and they're they were super inspirational clearly cuz I made it out too. Um and also the speech tournament's my favorite thing every year. I love it. My daughter did it. Julie got to judge. I love everyone who volunteers. It's so awesome. Well done. And um thanks to them because May is always my favorite when they come in. >> Um I have a few things. The speech tournament was excellent. Um, our administrative team does a really nice job of putting it on. We It's fun to be with the high school kids and to see our own students take that leap and stand in front of judges.
So this is a class that we have offered to employees here at the high school for the last few years or at the school district for the last few years. Um but now I've opened it up and I'm teaching it within the community as well. Um so we're hoping to partner with nonprofits and churches in our community. so that every single person in Huntington County, that's my goal, that's a good goal, um has the um knowledge and understanding about mental health and so it decreases the stigma in our community, but also increases the education. Uh so I taught a class today which was awesome. I had people from the Boys and Girls Club, I had people from Huntington University, um our school district, Huntington Catholic, um and a local priest. So, it was a really diverse group of people and everybody coming together um for the same reason.
