Could you explain the the five essentials math? >> Yeah, so there are different categories for each of the things and one of them is instruction. The um math and ELA instruction questions are around the curriculum, whether it's aligned, whether the kids understand what they need, they understand proficiency. So kids are scoring um their understanding of the curriculum they're receiving. And so in the past that some of them have been kind of stagnant, some of them have been a little bit lower, but we saw a huge jump in math and ELA uh questions being positive in the five essentials this year. We usually don't have that data by this point. So it was just something exciting that we saw that we wanted to include because that new curriculum was definitely a heavy lift for our teachers. So to see our students immediately see some of that in these ratings is is a positive thing for us.
I am proud to announce this year's recipients with the American Legion Certificate School Award made by the Lakes Region Post 703 and ask that they come forward when their names are called. Jillian Morales in recognition of attainment acquired as winner of the American Legion School Award. In further recognition of the possession of these high qualities of courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship and service with are necessary to preservation and protection of the fundamental institutions of our government. This award is paid by the lake region post 703. Congratulations There's also this nephew award. >> Yeah. >> Aihaba Woo! Go! Congratulations and good luck in the next adventure of your lives. And may God bless each and every one of you. Again, thank you for allowing me to share this wonderful moment with you all. Congratulations. I would now like to recognize our silver honors award winners. These are the students who received all A's and B's in their eighth grade year.
So I'll turn it over to you. Thank you. Okay. So first question was will the Gallagher team give a final presentation to the board of their findings? They confirmed that they will give us a final presentation with the findings when it's complete. Um second question, how long is the salary survey data considered relevant and when does it lose its value? Um the salary survey um will be aged based on market data. Um so when we are presented with the data, it will it's aged so that when we need to use it in so for example, if they were giving us the information now, it would be um aged for like January so that we could actually have the data ready for the next school year. um the data the data is u good for three years um and it is flexible as um for us to have um uh information.
But I wanted to bring some awesome students up um and just showcase um one of the really cool programs that I think that we're doing. That's all. >> Meg, what an honor and privilege um how fortunate we are in our district to have Meg with us. Your skill and expertise, Megan, and you know what an honor it is to serve with you and to to be a part of the district. um you're amazing and truly truly appreciate all that you do and how you've brought um us into that mental health piece where uh it's so vital, so critical and you put that on the forefront of our district and um kind of on the cutting edge, guys. So again, I just want to say thank you and thank you to the students for for being here and the parents for supporting them and just appreciate you so much.
They kept him in for like 45 minutes straight and then just put him back in. >> That was the game. That was the game where me, Devin, and then someone else just were all together just kept going at him. Remember that? Yeah. >> Oh my god. And then every com >> he didn't score. He didn't touch that. >> No, it's literally just looking like an hour and a half. If they win, they >> also really >> Yeah, yours was a generation. >> I thought you guys were going to be gone, dude. girls. >> They lost their game. >> They got They got you know what was the score at? It was bad. >> Yeah, we had a Yeah, we we had a Yukon committ. >> Yeah. >> What year? But but like they're low though, right? >> Oh, no. Yeah, they're low. It's >> cuz they play no one because um No, they they have a couple questions.
I seem to remember too when we were talking about the new math curriculum that that first year there can sometimes be a dip or it can be a little stagnant and so hopefully next year will >> yeah I'm excited to see what the data does next year after teachers are comfortable with the curriculum and are able to use it. So, [clears throat] excuse me. Existing strategies. Uh, have you guys given any thoughts to anything new that you're looking at and you can share? >> Yeah. So, SLT kind of talked about what we can do. Champs, we've been fully implementing now for over a year and we are running into a little bit of a problem of the more you say it, the less um of a priority it becomes. It kind of becomes old news. Um, and so we talked about starting out the year with a reminder of what those strategies look like and really moving past the visible part of CHAMPS into the actual engagement part of CHAMPS.
Silver Honor Award winners, please stand to be recognized. You can sit. I would next like to recognize our gold honors award winners. These are the students who received all A's in their eighth grade year. Gold Honors Award winners, please stand to be recognized. Our next award is the Tyler Matthews Award. In June of 2016, our Big Hollow community lost incoming eighth grader Tyler Matthews. Tyler was a member of the school band and art club. In his honor, the Tyler Matthews Fine Arts Award is given out each year to one eighth grade student in the fine arts program who exemplifies some of the qualities which Tyler was best known for. Creativity, respect, kindness, responsibility, and a sense of humor. We hope that through continuing to recognize fine arts students each year, you will keep Tyler's memory alive in our school and in our community. This year's Tyler Matthews Fine Arts Award winner is Ryan Kaminsky.
So if we have someone who um a new position that we need to look at if the the um the salary is correct we can go to them for like an ad hoc information as well. Um last question does Gallagher give recommendations how how to structure the the salary structures? Uh, and yes, they do give us the recommendations. It's included in our contract. Do we have questions on this?
Um, I just want to say I I am so proud of our school corporation for really addressing this thing headon. Uh, we are, as Mr. Peter said, we're so fortunate that, um, you're part of our corporation because it does take someone, I think, that has a real heart uh, for the struggles that our younger generation is facing. I know that it's somewhat reactive, but at the same time, what you're doing is very proactive, and I I really appreciate that. So, um, yeah, you just keep doing what what you're doing, and if you need help from us, then please let us know. >> Quick question for the kids. Has anybody finished the book? >> Yeah. >> I one, thanks for the kids because I know school ended last week, so thank you for coming out. appreciate you. Um, but Meg, you said during your presentation you were talking about the tier 2, I believe is where you mentioned it at the middle school where you're working with Bowen Center.
>> Yeah. >> It's just how does that work? >> Yo, can somebody He hit it. He was standing out of it. But it hit his foot. So, is that in or out? >> That's if it hits the other player's body, it's always a point for >> the team that got hit. >> No, for the team. >> Oh, so you can hit someone. >> Yeah. Oh my god. I was right. It was It was for It wasn't It wasn't >> I thought you were talking about overall I thought you were talking about everyone's game. >> Hello. It might have Yeah, that was a good point. Wait. >> I respond. No. Are we gone? Are we good? >> I thought we're gone. >> She sent us some random number. So, pull up. >> Wait, are we gone for the time? >> I know. I know. I got >> it.
So CHAMPS is far more than just um visuals on the board and and the acronym going up every time you do a project. there's really a level of engagement that needs to be focused on and SLT is going to focus our PD towards that side of the CHAMP's work which we think will help both engagement in the classroom and hopefully our scores because when you're engaged you're learning more. So that's one area we're going to focus on. Um, the second area that we're kind of looking at is that panorama information. Really choosing what lessons are vital to our students and helping those advisory lessons transition into bulldog block to make sure that anything that we're doing in that time is more effective for our kids. Um, because we have a limited amount of time with them for SEAL curriculum, we have to make sure every lesson counts.
Please stand. I would next like to recognize our National Junior Honor Society members. All members of the Big Hollow NJHS, please stand and be recognized. Right. I'm so sorry. There were two winners for the Tyler Matthews Award. Our other winner is Vivian Hogan. Sorry about that. Next, I would like to recognize the winner of this year's Warrior Award. This award, which is being given for the third time, is presented to a student who has done big things in their time at Big Hollow. This student stepped up and exemplified the community building, fun-loving mission of Big Hollow and the PTO. He was in every activity imaginable. He has brought kindness and energy to Biggie the warrior. This year's warrior award goes to Becca Garrett. Try and keep it moving so you can stand and laugh and then you can sit back down with that. All right.
Any questions? Okay. May I have a motion to approve the district salary study as presented? >> So moved. Okay. Any discussion? Roll call. Julie Jetty, >> yes. >> Bridget Sandlin, >> yes. >> Mindy Hartman, >> yes. >> Jason Jansik, >> yes. >> Stacy Salt, >> yes. >> Darling, >> yes. >> Motion approved. >> Okay. Uh 11.3 is approval of of board member estimate reimbursement to attend the Illinois Association of School Board joint annual conference. Dr. Thomas, >> thank you. So we had three board members who uh put in the paperwork for this and this is required by uh policy 2 colon 125 board member expenses. Uh so the expenses are listed on the sheets that you have there and uh we have three board members who are not planning to attend and I think one more who may be planning to attend as well. Uh the board has in policy to be able to approve up to $5,000 of expenses just by way of some background.
Can you explain our relationship with Bowen Center in the schools a little bit more? And specifically, I'm curious, do those kids need to pay for that service or is that just part of our relationship with them a little bit? >> That's a great question. Um, every school corporation I believe in Indiana needs to have um a memorandum of understanding with a community um mental health organization. So our community mental health organization is Bowen. It doesn't mean we can't have other memorandums of understanding. So we can have multiple different organizations but you have to have one. So Bowen has been a huge support kind of since the beginning. Um and we have a program within the school system called the student assistance program. So, and so every single student in the school corporation has access to two free appointments. Um, no matter who you are, it doesn't matter what your income level is.
I don't even know where it was automatic, right? You can do automatic. and and like I was like my mom told me >> I'm like you should show up. You should show up and clearing his calendar right now. Oh, sick. I'm skipping and Rebecca and Norris. We and Rebecca the same graduation party.
and we're really they're meeting tomorrow full day for a retreat on Bulldog block to make sure that that SEAL curriculum hits those needs um and works with our counseling program to ensure that there is continuity throughout our building. >> I have a few questions. >> Yeah. Uh so why do you think the decrease in math and reading happened? >> That's hard for me to say. I think sometimes when our proficiency is higher, it's harder to show the growth. Like I was saying earlier, I think that um there are sometimes dips with new curriculum right at the beginning. Um statistically, no matter what curriculum people pick, there's sometimes dips in what we see scores show in those first few years as you start to implement new things. Um I really don't have I think our teachers are working incredibly hard. So I couldn't blame something happening in the classroom as much as I assume it's just getting used to those resources and kind of working through it that way.
I tried to do one last silent Matthews, but they called me out. All right. I would now like to welcome Danielle Hernandez to the stage to address her classmates. >> Good evening. My name is Danny Hernandez and thank you for attending the event class of 2026 graduation ceremony. I would like to thank our school board, our superintendent Mr. B, our principal Mr. Principles, Mr. Summers and Miss Mcdana, and following all the teachers and staff here who contributed to our individual experiences at the I would like to start off by congratulating all of my fellow eighth grade graduates. We made it. It's almost unimaginable that we are here today. But it wasn't just yesterday we were experiencing our first day of middle school. Thinking back to that time, if you're anything like me, you might have cried coming here being surrounded by eighth graders who all appear like giant bronny intimidating knowledge.
Um so with that I would um I present that information for the board's consideration. >> Thank you. Any questions? May I have a motion to approve the board member estimate reimbursement to attend the Illinois Association of School Board joint annual conference as presented? >> So moved. >> Second. >> Discussion. Roll call, please. >> Julie Jetty, >> yes. >> Bridget Sandlin, >> yes. >> Mindy Hartman, >> yes. >> Jason Jansik, >> yes. >> Stacy Salt, Darling, >> yes. >> Motion approved. 11.4. Um I asked that this we talked about this at the cow meeting last week and I when I got home and I was thinking about it um I kind of just had some questions and so um I talked with uh Mrs. Pot Potter on this and um she kind of worked with Dr. Thomas to bring this back. So um this is the approval of policy 220 22 220 board of education meeting procedure.
Um, none of that matters. You have access to these two free appointments. And that's a program that we've been doing for a long while. Um, so when you sign up for this better view, you can utilize those two appointments um to be part of that. And then for some people, it's like, well, I've never done therapy. I just want to kind of try it out. or a parent's like, I don't know where to go. Here's a good starting point because I think it can be kind of overwhelming in the beginning. Um, so that's where the a student assistance program comes in, but also where Better View is a part of that. Um, but Better View works just the same as it would if you were in like at the Bowen Health Center, like if you were there. Um, you would just pay based on your insurance or if you have Medicaid, like whatever would be your co-pay is the same thing that you would pay with Better View.
um the opportunities to respond. I apologize. Can you um go over that again? >> Yeah. So, when we do our Champs walkthroughs, we take two teachers at a time and they go into a classroom with a clipboard and they are watching for students opportunities to respond. There's passive engagement through active engagement. So, active engagement is an example of asking students to raise their hand and answer a question. Passive engagement is you're asking students to put their Chromebooks away and put them under their desk. Each of those counts as an opportunity to respond. Um, but the goal is to have more active engagement in the classroom and not focus on those passive engagement opportunities. If you walk into one of our Spanish classrooms, you're going to see opportunities to respond from our teachers over 40 every 10 minutes. Every time we go in there, they are consistently they deserve the shout out for having constant opportunities to respond.
