>> Okay. >> Because he's making that income elsewhere. It's it's not too dissimilar to what we do with Ivy Tech already and they buy some of our teachers preps out. So, they're getting compensated for that as well. >> Okay. >> And I you know, I I look further down the road. >> [clears throat] >> We're not in dire straits like a North Miami. >> Mhm. >> Um we've done some pretty good things financially as well as pathway-wise, but we're always one teacher away from losing an entire pathway or or losing Indiana College Core. And what that means in the end is funding. So, you know, if we lose a if we lose funding, we lose CTE funding, if we lose uh funding for an academic seal, we can lose two to three thousand dollars for those students just because we're missing one one class. And Ivy Tech has been a great partner with us, but Ivy Tech is coming up against some of the same things.
The reason they can't get a an instructor there is because Ivy Tech couldn't find a math instructor for them to have. So, if we don't share um and think forward, then we probably will be behind the eight ball in the future. And I would hate to say to North Miami that >> [clears throat] >> we can't do this and then two years down the road they have somebody that we needed and then say uh two years [clears throat] ago we can't do this. >> That's right. Well, I don't think it's so much saying we can't do it. I think it it's saying where's the financial piece for us? And where does it make it work for our teacher that's putting in the extra time, the extra effort to do this Zoom class and also drive up there under all conditions. And the other And the one question I think that has not been asked here, what happens when our calendars don't align?
And how does that work? Is he going to be required to come in and teach the extra days cuz our calendars don't align? >> So >> with North Miami. >> So our calendar does not align. Um he This hasn't been approved yet. He knew that it could be approved. Um he went up to North Miami one day. >> [snorts] >> This was at the last week at the end of last week to talk with their students so that they are prepared because they start three or four days later than we do. So they're prepared to get on there and do their lessons. This it kind of switches your mentality, right? Um and high school classes used to be five days a week. You go to six classes, seven classes. [clears throat] College classes are not that way. You may meet two or three days a week.
You you get your seat time. With pathways, our our classes in our high school are moving more towards that college course load. Whether we like it or we don't like it, uh we're going to have some kids next year in dual enrollment classes because we couldn't get somebody to teach anatomy. So those classes will only meet live maybe two, maybe three days a week. Um so you know, I I look at this as uh the advance for him, he gets a stipend on top of what he's already making. So it bumps his his overall. What what it helps us is it it pays for that class period that he's not going to to be there. Um and I said, for for our kids, they get four days a week live. For their for their kids, they get one day a week live. That's beneficial to them, too, because if they're taking it through an online school, they get zero days a week live.
And that's a terribly difficult >> Oh, yeah. >> of course, [clears throat] to not have anybody there to help. So, I think it's a Like I said, I think it's a win-win. >> We can't control the the things that have happened that end up leading us with uh an empty classroom. Well, we'd already had that happen two semesters in a row, I think, in Spanish, which you >> Correct. >> That was right. It was Spanish, right? And then we we did online, which was very expensive. >> $100,000 a semester. >> Very expensive. >> [clears throat] >> So, building up this kind of rapport and making uh having a starting point where the finances seem to work, It's a better alternative than 100k online. >> Yeah. I mean, the board The board challenged me to think outside the box. This is about as outside the box as I get.
>> And I'll give it give it a couple months. We'll do better. >> Well, and and here's the thing. Yeah, I I get it. We're helping We're helping [clears throat] North Miami. But, I think in the future, it may be helping McArthur if if we come up against another situation where we can't find somebody. >> Yeah. But, there again, I I don't mind helping out to the school. I just want to make sure on the financial side that we're covered, plus the teacher understands going into it that the schedule may not line and we work those things out and all [clears throat] of a sudden, halfway through this, it doesn't become a problem and then we don't own own We're not the one who has a problem. Now, North Miami has a problem. Just want to make sure before we vote on this, all that stuff's been talked about and it's worked out, so on and so forth.
Um with With Chris's situation, it's a little different. The IT worlds just flowed back and forth together and we had that worked out in the head of time, but >> Dave, you want to tell You You spoke to the principal several several times in the last month. >> to their principal, and we we've been in a lot of discussion about working out how our schedule's going to be laid out. We're off on this vacation day. Uh what do we do when >> [clears throat] >> snow day or pool day, and they they got a little bit different on that. Eric and I were just talking about this this morning. And Eric is is on board to You know, he's going to He wants to help make this work because he realizes he's got to be there for those kids to to help them be successful.
He doesn't want to see them fail. He wants to see them be successful. And so their principal and I, we have we've shared you know, what our calendar looks like, what days we have off. What we're going to have to do, how we're going to have to maneuver this. We We've built it to the uh to the schedule of what we're going to do when Mr. Eisenberg is at North Miami the day that he's not here. We've got that covered. We've We've put all that together. So, there's a lot of moving parts. We've had a lot of discussion uh before we got to this point, and I We're on the right track. Because it it is it's a You know, what Mr. Jernigan is saying, it's it's going to end up helping us sometime because it's it's there's too much going on right now to see to to say it's not.
>> Term is 1 year, 1 school year? >> Correct. It cannot renew unless we say it's not [clears throat] renewed. >> Right. Yeah, it's non-renewable. >> Correct. >> Okay. >> I think >> Thank you. Thank you, Mr. Jernigan. Is that >> I like that explanation. I had questions, you know, are the details worked out? Have they you know, Is this just something that's been Okay. >> I think Allen reminding us of what the options were beforehand and what they cost speaks volumes. Okay. >> [clears throat] >> That doesn't sound too cheap. >> Well, that's >> It doesn't sound too cheap. >> Well, >> [laughter] >> Well, well, that's that's that's the question. And they should actually know that, so >> Yeah, I [clears throat] It seemed real cheap to me, but for what it is. >> That's the going rate. And I think if we go above [clears throat] that >> Well, what is that?
We just said the going rate was >> the alternative. Yeah, that's >> That won't be a surprise, I think. Whatever the situation. >> Okay. And sorry, you just mentioned the $5,000 stipend. Is it Are we paying that or are we passing that off to North Miami? >> We will pay that out of the money we collect from North Miami. >> Okay. Okay. Anything else before we make a motion to approve? >> [sighs] >> Make a motion to approve. >> So moved. >> Second. >> I second.
>> All those in favor signify by saying aye. >> Aye. >> Opposed, same sign. Motion carries. Tuition agreement. >> Yeah, much like the discussion we just had, um we had an anatomy teacher who left. We don't have an anatomy teacher. We are fortunate enough that Ivy Tech had an anatomy teacher we can do a dual enrollment. I just looked at that number today. That's going to cost us $20,000 or thereabouts. About the same amount that it's costing to put her in the next two kids. Um we have a teacher that is willing to go back and get her credentialing so she can teach anatomy and physiology as well as a advanced biology, which helps us out with the Indiana college core. Um this is pretty similar to what we used a few years ago with another teacher um to get them to go back to school, and then there is a 5-year separation repayment plan.
Ask for your approval. Okay. Entertain a motion to approve the tuition agreement as presented. >> So moved. >> Second. >> Any questions or comments? >> How many I know this isn't in the packet here specifically, but how many teachers do we have on emergency licenses as a whole? There's a lot. >> We don't have a lot anymore. We We had a lot at one time, but they've transitioned over. >> Do you know the percentage? >> general percentage less than 10%. Well, we'd have to do that by looking at it, but I can >> I I said general. >> Thank you. >> Okay. I think we have a motion and a second on that. This has been way too long of a meeting. It's over. All those in favor signify by saying I. >> I. >> Opposed, same sign. Motion carries brings down item number nine, superintendent comments.
>> I'm going to make this quick cuz I agree with Mr. Dayne this has been a long one. You have in front of you a budget calendar that's going to be how we're going to work through the budget. Um I will say I sat down with the the business office this week. Uh so we're looking at preliminary numbers for that. So that is the budget calendar. Kind of plug that in. Those Those are included inside with the [clears throat] board minutes. So those will will approve on those dates. Um graduation reminder is the 30th so it's 10:00 and you be in the front office at 9:30. Is that correct Mr. Durkes? >> Yeah, 9:15 9:30. >> 9:15 9:30. Um you want to check your email if you have not. Sarah Jones sent you an email that says here who's who you're handing diplomas out to.
Active shooter training is here. Um I know Mr. Dayne, you're you'll be here, correct? >> Yes. >> Um if you want to come and watch what is going on with that active shooter training that we're doing on the fourth from 8:00 to 5:00. I think they're going to do several uh different mock-ups. Uh a couple in the morning, a couple in the afternoon is my understanding. >> Yes. >> Um so if you want to come to that, that'd be [clears throat] great. If you want to be a volunteer and you're over 21, you can do that as well to be a volunteer. Um retirees, we have several retirees. We we recognize them as some of the finest. We can't say enough. Uh I I know when I came into this position, um I had a precursor that she had to stay 7 years. She didn't make that.
Um but I I can't speak highly enough of what she's done for this corporation. Um so banker. John Catanzaro has been here and and started out as a bus driver um and and has been in the classroom for several years. Had a couple of my kids in class. Can't say enough about him as well. Christie Wittenberg, um probably one of the best language arts teachers I've ever been around. Just a just a um solid teacher. Mr. and Mrs. Tinney, uh I hired both of them in my building at one point. You're not going to find anybody who loves kids more than those two. Um so they're going to be sorely missed as well. So want to congratulate them on their next session of life and uh um last couple things I have, um I would like to have a work session look at a priority list.
You want to pull that up, okay? Okay. Uh to work on a priority list, you got this in a shared doc probably two or three months ago. So if you still have that I mean that board update, this is that priority list that was put together after we walked around and and looked at a lot of different things here on my campus. Um and this is in in um basically to set up bond issuing for the next 5 to 7 years. So anybody have an objection before the next board meeting, do it from 5 to 6 work session, look over those. Is there any objection to doing that? >> That's fine. Fine with me. >> And from there we go. >> Okay. Um I will reshare that with you as well as the timeline for the bonding. Um basically Mr. Day and I set a meeting at this board last week.
>> Last week. Uh to kind of roll over and what it looked like. We can bond 11.6 million dollars. Um and and I wouldn't want to bond that all at once because those bigger projects sometimes you you lose sight of where you're going, but um we would ask for that initial um money up front. That way um it would make that process easier moving along the way. So, we'd ask for 11.6 uh million and then we'd probably break that up into two or three different projects depending on what that looked like. This This as you look through that if you want to look at the project tab, >> [clears throat] >> you're going to see red, which is the immediate, uh yellow, which is the intermediate projects, and then green, which is the those that are probably 5 to 6 years out. Um so, take a look at those and like I said, we've identified those.
Um Miss Miss Kennedy and myself have have walked around, talked with building principals, talked with custodians, talked with vendors um to see what what those were. So, work session 5:00. We'll put that on. The other thing, um I'm also sending you some information about um architect and some of the things that are going on there. Uh I would like to have an exact session to kind of discuss what we need to do moving forward there, uh what the board's desire would be. Uh I have the 10th of June available. You might look at your calendar to see if the 10th of June works for anybody. >> [cough] >> This coming evening, same time. >> Yeah, evening. Yeah, we can do it 5:00 or 6:00 at night. >> What day of the week is that? >> That please. >> It's Wednesday. >> Wednesday. >> Okay. >> What's the date of June?
>> The 10th. >> Oh. >> 16th. >> Oh, I'll be in Phoenix. >> I can share information with you. >> I'll be in the air. >> Anybody else have a Should be good. 6:00. I will share some additional information with you prior to that as well. Um so that we we're all on the same page moving into it. Okay. So I have sir. >> Okay. Move down to the principal comments. You get to go first. >> I'm ready. >> [clears throat] >> Good evening. Uh you know when you talk about end of the year winding down that at the middle school there's usually not much winding down more like a tornado. Um and and it's just a lot of things. Um And so over the last month we don't have a lot coming up. Middle school specific but the middle school will be very busy and I appreciate Catherine and and Tina getting together and working the schedule to help out the high school as they come over because of the project cuz it's going to be hard to get it all clean with all the things that are going to be going on in the middle school.
So I appreciate them and all the work they've done already to help all those sports teams and band and whoever's going to need it a place that place over the summer to have a place. Um but over the last month as we've wrapped up school we finished all our sports testing uh trying to get all our homework in for the kids here as we got to the end. Uh laptop collection. Last week we did three days of STEM days. You may have seen some postings on that which it's a lot of work for everyone. The kids and the teachers everyone's tired after three STEM days. And then the last day we started off with awards in the morning. We go outside for lunch. We do field day. We end it with a talent show. Um we really wore the kids out that last week. But everything went great.
