trustee o'neill and i vote imotion passes we'll go to 5.2 selection of lease leaseback contractor for magnolia high school um new construction and modernization project rfp number 2022-20 again this is an action item or uh entertainment motion second i have a motion in a second any questions just to remind me of the projects that we've done with uh ericsson and hall construction company patty good afternoon board of trustees um yes we've done uh with erickson hall right the question we've done oxford academy uh savannah high school uh and those were the only two okay beautiful projects uh under the oh elise lee's back and we've done some cares act work um last year with erickson hall i'd just like to add patty my gratitude to you and your team of people when we had our first school bond because of difficulties with uh ability inability in availability to get materials oxford i'm sorry magnolia was not attended to this is such a positive for this community big time big time and i just want to thank you and i'm grateful thank you thank you all right yeah go ahead patty um due to the worldwide situation right now uh economically how is this going to be impacting uh what we're moving into thank you all my name is matt gates president of erickson hall construction as as part of the selection process the board the panel asked how we're doing in terms of the economy and what we're seeing out there it we did a rough budget of the number for the work we're right up against it we've already identified some potential value engineering to continue to do all the square footage and all the work necessary and we're confident that we can deliver that with the budget that you've got stated in the rfp there are some challenges in terms of supply chain issues but we've identified where we can utilize existing material to bridge the gap until the new equipment shows up and that again will finish on time and with all of the equipment as specified in the plans and specs thank you good question sure i thank mr o'brien for that question mystery i don't know where's mr o'brien i just me yeah we got it kathy we know we were talking about i i had a question too uh i know we we've had many of our projects with the community benefits agreement which allowed us to hire locally as well as union labor uh hopefully i would encourage um your your projects to not only hire locally but also entertain uh local union shops we're utilizing a local contractor outreach program that we've done in the past both at oxford and at savannah and that was very successful to where we actually increased our subcontractor participation with some of these contractors to where they come with us to different projects we're anticipating doing that again okay on average even without a community benefits agreement in place we're typically averaging about 30 to 45 percent union participation without even trying so we will definitely be reaching out to the union contractors this is a big enough job it really makes sense and we want that labor horsepower that they can bring to the project i appreciate that thank you very much all right seeing no other questions all in favor aye any oppose motion passes unanimously all right congratulations we will move to our consent calendar um board will list consent calendar items as they wish to pull any dis discussion do we have anything to pull that's 40 years ago in february in uh your superintendent bill hecker and the burlington business council encouraged me to move the operation over here this was a perfect place everybody was very happy about us being here bill hecker really thought it was important for him for you to use the building to serve the community we had i'm i can't tell you how many children we've had through here but anyway what bothers me the most right now is the way that you are closing us down um i think we've been blindsided and i think we've been bullied here um just last last year about this time the fire the state fire marshal came here and we had a violation and it to the building and it needed to be repaired um becky who is my director i'm i'm retired now from seesaw but becky um informed dan your maintenance man of the issue and it needed to be done he did not respond and finally after several weeks now this is a violation that the state fire marshal has issued and you being the landlord you it's your responsibility to do that we were told by todd and dan your maintenance man that they were not going to repair it that would be up to us okay that is just fine uh in order for us to stay open we had to do that and we wanted some assurance that i mean we're going to put money into your building we want to make sure that we're here we were assured by todd and by dan that we had at least three years and probably five more years we decided well it's worth it we'll pay for it cost us a couple thousand dollars to get it repaired and that's fine fire marshal came in everything's clear we're good to go okay that was just last that was last year at this time six less than six months later becky goes into todd's office this is your last year this is it we were blindsided we were in my we were bullied we were told we had three to five more years and now you're telling us we're out and shame on you you increased our rent by 50 how did you how why would you do that to somebody like this we're not here to hurt anybody we've not been making millions of dollars even everybody thinks that we have we haven't we've just been taking care of the kids why this just happened last week i feel not me being bullied the kids are being bullied your parking lot is an l-shape there's one section right there that's been a playground for two three four five year olds there's tricycles out there i'm sure you've seen them the kids go out there 9 30 10 o'clock they know when they get to go outside they can't tell time but they know when it's their turn they have their snack they do their circle time and then what time is it's time to go outside last monday it was time for them to go outside yeah teacher had to say sorry kids we can't go there why not well i have a picture right here your maintenance guy parked in our playground two-year-olds three-year-olds four-year-olds is that not a bullying here i am i'm mr important you guys you're just two and three you don't need to drive you don't need to do on the tricycle what the heck you try to tell some kids some little kids they got tears in there i can't go out are you kidding me the other thing you have stooped to facebook i can't believe it you went to facebook you put all of the blame on this closing onto us well we told them that they should start looking oh todd has told us so many times i'm sorry we've been looking around you know what i have found look around burlington excuse me could you wrap up your comments is there another building could i just finish just uh come on it's been 40 years can't this is the first time well shame on you guys bullies bullies bullies do you want to see this picture this is the picture this is your picture of your maintenance guy he is on our playground two-year-old playground they don't need to play them shame on you guys shame on you 40 years i've not tried to hurt anybody all i wanted to do is take care of little kids make sure they are safe and what are you going to do here these classrooms when you've got five rooms you're going to have what apart offices for all these years you are kidding me that's more important than these children that are here in your community to have another office you already took our gym and now you're going to take all of the classrooms that's not fair to the children of this community there is no place for us to go no place sure i can go into elgin i can go into kelp i am i i have lived in this area for 50 years serving the people shame on you sure bullies sure always cheryl shame on you if you would like to talk you can call them tomorrow you can call me i can't hear you i'm hard of hearing you have said if you would like to if you would like to talk and discuss more with us you can call us tomorrow and i don't understand why yes i've been retired for a little while for 10 years i haven't been right here if you would like to talk you can call me tomorrow a lot of people have emailed you they've called you the last few days and you don't return their calls i have not i've received one email at the end of last week i responded to i responded to it today yeah that's who i responded to and you have not responded i did today oh you did yeah well maybe okay my name is becky mcclure um cheryl covered obviously a lot of what i was thinking to say as well um i joined cheryl in 1996 when she was asked by the district and the community to move the center here and that's when i joined her so i've been part of csun for 26 years we were also asked to do before and after care at lilly lake which we did we were asked by the district to open another center in plato center which we did those were all because the district and the community had a need and came to us and asked us and believe me we were thrilled to do it we were happy to have the opportunity but the district has come to us over the years when they when they had a need for child care i know things have changed um you made the decision plato wasn't necessary anymore he tore down that's your decision maybe in hindsight that would have been a great building for offices but um you know i don't know so now you've decided you need our side for the offices and that's your decision that's your job i know it's a very hard job i wouldn't want to have to make those decisions so i understand all of that um there's just a couple things i'd like to set the record straight on i i don't think it's professional to go onto facebook to respond to parents who are upset they're upset there there is a serious child care crisis in illinois so the fact that that i may not be here then is causing them tremendous amount of stress so they're angry and i told you that that would be the case so to to respond to them on facebook i just i don't think that was appropriate have i known for several months of course i have and i've been looking very hard was i blindsided yes i absolutely was um but again it's your decision i guess what i'm what i'm saying is i'm just tired of it being thrown towards the fact that it's my responsibility and my fault like i feel like that's the take that parents are getting is that i should have been looking harder i should have been looking longer you know i need to find something for your community for child care and the thing is you all live here i'm assuming you know what's around it's a clearly a very difficult task there isn't really you know there's not another building that we can just pick up and just go to so i just don't want the responsibility thrown back to me that says she should do this she needs to keep looking she's had plenty of time i don't know why she's not looking i don't know why she hasn't figured it out it's not up to me and i'm fine with your decision it's your decision you have that right i am one person i don't have the resources the funds or anything to buy land build a building whatever this community needs for child care that's not like i don't have that ability so i just want you to be aware of that and kind of own your decision you made the decision to make it into offices and that's fine if that's your decision just when parents are complaining explain to them why you need the offices and why that's more important than child care let them see why you're making these decisions they trusted you they want you to make decisions on their behalf they voted you all in so they need to understand why right now they're feeling like they don't matter because there is a there is a major crisis there are no child care facilities available there are no spots available so they want to make sense of why suddenly the district has decided that offices are more and more important than child care and again that's up to you guys to convey that message to the parents and help them understand and then also help them figure out a plan with your with the village or whatever it is they're your children also they're coming to you in a couple years so i feel like that's a community problem that you're going to have so whoever's responsibility is if it's the board if it's the village i don't know but maybe work together with the parents and try and figure something out because it's not it's not fair to all the families in your community now that they they don't know what they're going to do um and the other the only other last thing about posting on facebook um please have the facts first if you had wanted to know anything you could certainly call me i'm right here you can call me anytime we had decided that i would be the one handling things with my staff and my parents the district decided to tell everyone without my knowledge because of a form that someone saw someone could have called me and asked me about that form and i'll tell you the maybe you care i don't know or don't care but if you do that's a form we've used for probably 15 years it asks parents what their plans are for the summer so i have to ask you to wrap it up i will i'm about done it asks families what their plans are for the summer if they're not going to be here in the summer it asks if they will be returning in the fall that's what the form says so i don't know how the district operates but in our business it's crucial that we know our numbers for the fall and especially if i'm trying to relocate to a new facility why would i not need to know who's coming in the fall so to to blast that on facebook like like that was a reason for you then to go back on your word of course i need to know who's coming for the fall how do i relocate if i have no idea who's coming for the fall so it was a very there's nothing wrong with that question that's my business i need to know that um and and the other part of that was something about deposit and i have not collected one single deposit for the fall and if anyone had also wanted to know that you certainly could have called and asked but i have not collected a single deposit and i don't know why you think i have again you could ask so before you go posting things i just would appreciate a phone call just get the facts straight because i will not post things on facebook i'm not going to go that route i just i and i'm happy to talk like you know you said you're happy to talk talks i'm happy to answer any questions you might have so that's it in the end i thoroughly enjoyed my time we're very grateful we had the opportunity you know it's been a great 25 years i just i know there's gonna be issues coming up in the next five months as we're moving out um again just before you blast stuff or talk bad about us or push the blame on us um think about that and maybe talk to us and just have a little bit of of respect also for our families and my staff and and parents so that's it thank you hi my name is don conklin and i'm here to talk about the proposed boundary shift that would move three out of four of my children from hbt to prairie view in the fall i'd like to begin with a little bit of history with myself in the community and hbt i have lived in woodbridge north for four and a half years i moved here before my oldest child started school to ensure that he would receive the best education in the area and had planned to be in this house so that we could stay long-term i had switched elementary schools in my youth and that had not worked out well for me so i had wanted my children to grow up without having to move because of this experience we had also planned on becoming foster parents so adding security and stability to children that we had not even met yet was high on my husband's and my list of priorities we viewed hundreds of homes and none met my expectations we found our current home and bid on it the first day it was on the market over the years we have made this house and community our home we have planted gardens and made friends sooner family went from three to six people we never imagined our next step would be to adopt three children so quickly in our fostering journey but we were less afraid of this change because we felt that we had everything we needed a home with the yard we made for our children a neighborhood where it was safe to play and a school that i knew would welcome them in our years here my family started to grow deep roots my adopted children have learned what stability and trust meant in the time with us they are learning how to care for what they have and that we own our house and they do not need to lose everything and be evicted they have never had a permanent home before and they are just now realizing that we are here for them no matter what and this is not easy for them because they have seen how unsafe this world can be i have been volunteering at hbt through the pto for four years and i am currently the hbt pto president i have happily volunteered hundreds of hours helping out the school not only for my children but also for all of the children attending hbt i love that they recognize me in the halls even with my mask on they ask me what the next event is going to be and they always want to hear about the book fear i love nurturing their love for books it's so rewarding for me to see it was much more difficult for me to help through the pandemic but with the help of three other very dedicated ptor pto members we managed to do everything ourselves from home while working and supporting our children through remote learning all of this work was done with the plan the purpose of this plan was to help support a great learning environment for my family and my community moving our kids from one school to another full school does not solve the problem of handling the increased numbers from the growing communities nearby it is unfair to uproot established areas to fit in new growth we are here with a purpose and we deserve to stay other accommodations need to be made for these new communities who will need more than 108 seats that they are taking from the older established communities these new areas need to be built with a permanent purpose and a permanent solution and it should be found for these school boundaries not a temporary one thank you went to action reports second to discuss and improve the concentration kind of looking at the big disparity kind of between the revenues i was kind of i did the research to try to see what what's going on there and it's due to our taxes that we follow 21 our percentage we received was this year and this year's budget at this point we've only received 48 so that makes up the big chunk of the difference in revenues um then also with the fy 22 revenues a lot of revenues look higher than last year but last year's numbers are low because of complications that were still athletics were short in season we didn't have interest rates all that so kind of a bad year to compare to but that one kind of threw me off a little bit next the state board of education discovered that they made a coding error you probably saw it on the news that cps got 87 million overpayment well that money was part of the evidence-based funding calculations that went back to when they first implemented it back in so that money that was in that formula was not distributed to then all the other schools so the outcome of that is 34 736 dollars that's coming back to us so um that money because it's part of evidence-based funding we're just going to put it in the o m fund to go towards our capital projects finishers impact base came in at nine hundred and 291 dollars um 37 new home starts no transition fees came in this month so right now our budget for the impact these was a million um we surpassed that we're at 1.2 million right now so that money is going into our capital projects fund and then the bills payable reports for both northern cain and central are normally questions all right talk yes dan pill yes nolan yes renee rabe yeah a thief yes gorman in motion second discuss and improve changes to the high school graduation so moved second so last month we talked a little bit about the schedule change at the high school um and relevant to the graduation changes they would need for um what we would have for our requirements credits to 20 credits is the recommendation for making the board of education uh the shift of roughly three credits noting that in the schedule change students still have the opportunity the flexibility to take seven courses so the opportunity for the number of courses students can take stays there it does allow for a lot of flexibility for different student groups some students may choose to do six credits plus keep the academic advisory other students may choose to take seven credits as they currently do it also gives the flexibility for courses that we have in our career pathways uh courses in dual credit where they go to elgin community college with academic advisory being offered at both the first period and the last period it does provide for them to be able to exit the school early the double block go to ecc traffic later and then not have to lose some time in terms of their coursework um with the schedule change we are asking tonight credit shift from five to twenty yeah i i don't have a question i just know that this was an issue that i was concerned about and uh so um you know i i did some research into it because there was a concern that i had and that other parents had about whether this would make us less competitive um and what i found was that uh there are other schools that are you know uh highly competitive in terms of sending their kids to you know elite schools university of illinois other places that that have lesser requirements and um the assurances that i've had received from from the administration that this is not meant to reduce the number of opportunities that kids have to take a variety of classes whether it's ap or pathways it it made it more assuring to me that reducing the requirements isn't going to make us less competitive because other schools that have extremely uh good placement rates at you know very good schools have lower requirements than 23.5 and yet it's the ability to be able to take more if you want that is important not necessarily where our baseline minimum is so uh thanks to the feedback that i got from the administration my concerns were uh assuaged good well stating understanding the difference between twenty three and after twenty af is the opportunity other questions yes gorman yes next week second to discuss and improve the 15 affiliation agreement thank you so um memo is included in the board packet so annually we have to renew our affiliation agreements in this board package there's 15 and there's one new one anderson humane the others are renewals and this allows our students to have their externship hours the contracts remain the same changes second nolan yes sorry ray thief yes bulk yes hand pill yes gorman yes next motion second to discuss an approved overnight trip central high school ffa springfield 14th this is an annual trip that our ffa attends the state convention that's approval [ __ ] we used to do some of these team building type trips um of course hit and kind of we stopped that but now we're moving back for pre-pandemic activities and so this would be um for an overnight trip to attend the purdue women's basketball in building great yes beef yes yes amphi yes nolan yes gorman second um so the district consolidate plan is an annual grant that gets completed the grant covers all of our grants federal government cattle one time battle three which are ela requires that we put down how we utilize dollars and other programs that we implement to make a goal to see the entire packet as part of sophia mills memo as well he's attached actually excited to plan um just i know peace be granted brought else any questions a faith yes bulk yes anvil yes nolan yes raid yes gorman yes we've got information items first we'll discuss the enrollment and boundary shift our enrollment report is included in the board packet and as you can see um here we're at 300 343 additional students from last year inside the court packet you should have a memo for me which lays out the students that are in the boundaries of south street woodbridge in waterford which is the recommendation from administration to make that shift for next year within the memo i do stress what the need is harvey thomas as you're aware is a very heavy populated school currently is our largest elementary school at this point in time it also has the largest potential for new growth within here in the memory i talk about approximately 84 students coming out of the town homes off of nassau road and that's just an estimate what we use basically there is point eight coming out of all of the new homes so that's kind of our reference uh roughly less than one student per home could be higher than that but that's what we've been generally using as well as um off of the mcdonald's subdivision another 65 to 80 students are projected for a total of 150 to 164 new students we did a five-year analysis uh pvs pretty much landlocked and they're built out as much as they can be so we're not seeing growth coming into preview so to stabilize prairie view we believe it's in the best interest at this time to make the shift of those three subdivisions that are closest to preview uh for our transportation purposes when we talk to our transportation facilities uh they thought those were the three areas that would be a natural move into prairie view they were there prior to us making the boundary shift years ago um it is 108 students that's with the projection of kindergarten students for next year basically we took the average of each of those subdivisions and laid in an average amount we think would be kindergarten students so we have 108 students otherwise it's 91 students at this time that will be shifted we did take a look at the fourth graders to see how many of those students would shift not just you know next year but then they're going to shift again to perennials middle school recognizing that is challenging a lot of those fourth graders had siblings that were attached to them so it is going to be our recommendation uh that we move the fourth graders as well for next year i think we could work with parents on an individual basis to try to either cluster those kids together or figure out what we can do to try to alleviate some of that stress but because there were so many families that were linked together with siblings with that fourth grade group we felt it was best just to go ahead and shift those families uh recognizing it's never easy um to make an undershift it's probably one of the most difficult things we do but given uh the position that harvey thomas will be in and given the position of the losing of the loss in enrollment at preview we think this is the time to go ahead and make that shift so our recommendation is to make that move any questions i think one thing that um we talked about at the border treat was the duration of time that these boundaries have been in place which i think for context is as challenging as any of these decisions are i think we said it was eight or nine years that this has been in place which in any district is a really long period of time and so i think just to highlight the the amount of growth that our district has had we've been able to maintain through necessarily creative means i think especially with hbt um that uh you know i think for lack of a description probably held on as long as we could especially knowing still what's coming before we are able to have a new school allocation whatever that's going to look like five years from now this is not something that we have in a year um and so just based on you know how referendums work right like that's kind of how it goes so if this again gives us the years without needing to put new mobiles and it again hopefully minimizes we can extend to at least five years right whenever a new school whatever that's going to look like is in there then obviously we know we're going to have to shift again to some extent but if that gives us the longest period of time with the minimal amount of disruption to the fewest number of families that kind of plugs the hole um you know i i really don't see there as being any other option i mean my girls have friends who aren't going to be in school with them next year as a result of that you know right so it's going to affect my kids it's going to affect their friends you know um but you know it's going to be tough but i don't think we have a choice i would agree i think that um if we're trying to look where we're heading we know ct is the next place we have some challenges uh but our current position is right now harvey thomas in trying to shift some families out and get pv more stabilized and equalizing the three buildings across the way it will open hbt a little smaller than it is today um with the numbers as you saw my mom all but it does allow for that growth that we're anticipating as you can see from uh dana's report we definitely have new housing and it's basically in harvey thomas's back door next we can discuss capital projects our director paulo is here hello um it's that fun time start talking about summer construction which we've kind of already started uh country trails and prairie holes we started those cafeteria expansions already um country trails has foundation and we're still starting the masonry walls so trying to get a jump on that we talked about i spoke about that a couple months ago to to just have time to be able to get all that work done by the end of the summer we needed to start right away it's worked out well kids have adapted staff has adapted to working around the construction area we haven't had any issues and that's allowing us the time prairie knowles we ran into a couple utility issues that we were able to address and work with those providers and work around those so as of right now we're right on schedule we want to be with those two projects um we're working currently on bids with our architect and construction manager on bids for the c new ct entryway try to alleviate some traffic flow and kind of remodify how traffic comes in we've gone back and forth a few times with the engineer on designs some of their thoughts don't necessarily align with our thoughts so there's been a kind of a delay in that communication process and getting that final design done but i think we're there so we're hoping to bring that and then we also just got the new design for the prairie view parking lot edition expansion on we just got those today um so we'll hopefully bring those bids um to the board we're hoping in may that's the plan um we're working on um generators for the three elementary so lilly lake we dana got the grant for so we're working on that one um generators are 18 month to 24 month lead time so we're looking at the possibility of purchasing the the equipment through a co-op one of the purchasing co-ops and then if we have to bid out the labor piece so then we would do that work during the summer to prep the buildings for those in my perfect world along with lowly lake will do prairie view and hbt at the same time so have them all prepped and ready to go for generators when they when they arrive the district office reconfiguration we're working with our engineers and architects on what the probability and and things are of moving walls relocating things kind of working on some design things with that space over there looking at the mechanical systems plumbing trying to evaluate where all that is what we're going to have to put money into if there's any code pieces that we may have to pick up on so we're working with our engineers and our architects and what the capabilities are based on what our future needs are so that's an ongoing process too then the other thing that's out there is the new o m transportation building that probably won't come to the board until uh probably june that'll be a project that will be taking place at the end of the summer and then we'll be working on that the following winter that'll be the new home where we'll be vacating uh central middle school and transportation will be moving into that new building um and that'll be a project that'll be at the end of the summer and going into next school year those are the big things on the docket uh any questions thanks dude awesome thank you thank you all right director versus here with some athletics and activities updates all right i'll try to keep it short and sweet so as we know this has probably been the worst spring that we could ever imagine with the weather and uh you know we we get a nice weekend last week of playing and we wake up to snow today but we're we're uh pushing through it uh girl soccer's kind of uh you know the record doesn't say they're three and five but that was all precon you know conference they're playing 3-8 teams because we like to non-conference games we like to play up so they won uh saturday against a two-way school easily and they won off friday as well so they're on the right track girls softball you know fields have been rough you know they didn't have a lot of games going in uh they played three conference games they've had you know numerous cancel but they went to larkin this past weekend won the tournament uh first time they won that they scored 51 runs in three games and they won the championship 18 to four so you know they're they're rolling we just need mother nature to help us out there as well um you know baseball's off to a good start they're you know five and four overall you know two and one in conference but you know like i said they like to play bigger school so you know st charles the east you know and and some of those other big schools there where we got wins with them uh boys and girls track you know there's going to be plenty of accolades coming out of those groups they just won the geneva invite this past weekend with eight teams a lot of them are larger schools as well the girls finished second um plenty of state indoor qualifiers that uh did had a nice showing down state as well so you know we're going to keep our eyes open there because i know we're going to go downstate with a lot of athletes in boys and girls track from the activity side i'm going to pass around these two so we'll start there we had our fox valley art art expo this past week and these two pictures that are coming around the these girl these uh two students were honorable mention and the field there it's it's amazing you know just the talent from all 10 schools and you know i know honorable mention hey to get any accolades is phenomenal no those were just the pictures that were in the powerpoint so i figured oh let me bring those in so you guys can see those um some other things activity-wise that's coming up prom friday night uh it's probably our largest problem we've had in my 10 years here which is great uh you know we're gonna bust the stu the students from here over to the q center and then back so we're excited and it's going to be a great venue it's our first time going to the q center but with our size it's the only one in the area that can house us so you know and we're going to see how this one goes but they're looking to kind of stay there because we don't anticipate our problem numbers getting smaller so and it and we feel pretty good about trying to stay a little more local than a lot of school districts they're busting down you know field museum and those things there's just a lot of other intangibles that go into going that far you know from home so that's prom april 9th uh this is more of a music fine arts uh on april 9th we went to lakes high school for the ihsa organizational contest so our wind ensemble our jazz lab band and corel all received high ratings of superior performance so those awards are coming for them which is amazing and outstanding which we know that our music department does a great job but with that it was a nice spearhead into vocal velocity which is up and coming and then our last sequence of concerts which starts the first week in may so may 3rd we have our win symphony may 4th we have course in corral may 5th we have jazz band may 6th we're doing our first theater night it's run through all of the kids that participate in the plays are kind of doing their improv they want to have a theater night just like bands we're like hey we think it's great and then we're going to close it all off on may 7th with our percussion uh performances and those the ticket information is going to get sent out this week you know for those events so we have not gotten the results yet from wise we're hoping to get those in but you know we should have those very soon that's our last group we're hoping to get those before the uh academic night because i know they get their honors recognized there so fingers crossed we're not really sure where the delay is at there but overall i mean we're moving along and it's going to be made before we know it thank you thank you thank you next week i received a foil from w.o months and abc by requesting information on books that have been challenged in district libraries this was a foyer that went off across the chicago land um we did have one book that was challenged it's a children's book called smokey it was published in 1962 and has some characters of native american and that book does remain on our show that wraps up the next meeting with the emotional second to second hulk yes and pill yes nolan yes rabe yes gorman thank you again for coming out five to seven minutes [Laughter]

so uh second all in favor hi sorry about that okay um so um on under informational items we are going to review the letter for the 2022 um ncss uh letter to parents and you will recognize it because it is the same version of the letter you have seen for a few years now the thing that is different obviously are the dates because every year we let folks know exactly when this will be coming up so as you can see grades three through six will start may 4th grade seven and eight may 3rd through may 5th for the smarter balanced grade 5 will take the science test on may 17th grade 8 will take the science test on april 27th and grade 11 will take it on these various dates may 23rd and 25th for different periods may 24th and 26th okay so one twenty schedules of course you're gonna be recognized yes i am do you recognize me um so how long is the test each time kevin why don't you speak to that question so each um each session is blocked out for either a class period or at the middle in high school or an hour at the elementary school elementary school they don't often use the entire hour but that's these are untimed tests so we block out that amount of time there are some natural stopping points in like in the ela assessment for example there's uh reading passages and there's two of them at the at the earliest grade levels so there's a natural stopping point after one of them and so that's often a natural spot so teachers use their judgment about taking breaks right right and because it's untimed they have a little bit more flexibility than in a timed assessment to be able to do that great thank you so we do it over these days and we we plot out the number of anticipated days and the the only reason i ask is because it looks like a lot of dates up there but if you're spreading it out over all the grades that are taking it it's really just 45 hours time slot yeah yes for each one yeah okay thank you and that had been a question i had asked earlier as well so um um okay and then just i know that there are some parents if we could just address this issue who uh parents and and members of the community who um do have concerns about standardized tests than what we're trying to capture and if you could just address those for the community and allay some of the concerns people might have about um what are we using especially with the younger grades what are we seeking with this information sure sure so there's a couple of things i would say to that number one we are more than happy to have conversations with any parent out there who has a question or concern they can contact their child's teacher that's first and foremost all the time we're more than willing to talk to them at any grade level and explain how they're used the next thing is that these are required tests by the state just the way the cmt was many years ago they are really what help give us as a district an idea of how well we are doing so is our english curriculum aligned to the standards when we get those scores back by the district we can tell if we've covered these standards or what we need to go back and re-teach in third grade before kids go to fourth grade or what we need to reinforce in fourth grade when they come back next year if they were in third grade the other thing that it does is it lets us know how students are growing so we can see where they left off we could see where they were pre pandemic and we can see if they've met what's called their growth target so we take a look to see are students growing are they healthy so if we have a small group of students who we think should be achieving more growth we can intervene and put supports in place for them to make sure that they're not falling behind or they're not lagging they don't have lagging skills so it helps us from a curriculum and instruction standpoint of where our teachers might need additional support and resources it are where we need to make curricular revisions and it also helps us to know where we need to put our energies for our students and where we might need to offer accelerated practices things like that for our students as well and given that we're coming off a panda off of the past two years 18 months what do you expect to see um what should we what should we all be looking for um what do we hope to see um because i know you've you've introduced acceleration uh the concept or the strategy of acceleration how do you expect that to manifest itself in the scores that sure so the concept of acceleration can be a little tricky because accelerating learning means making sure that all students are accessing grade level material grade level standards so it makes it sound like we're going past but we're not we're just continuing to move at the grade level and we want to make sure that we're not going back and re-teaching because if you do that you can get caught in a loop where kids never catch up so because we've spent a lot of time on accelerating learning and prioritizing the standards and scaffolding for students and we put time and energy into coaching and supports for our students both at the elementary level all the way to the high school level we are based on our internal measures really hoping that our students will demonstrate growth from the last time they took it our individual students will all make that year's growth that's ideally what we're looking for for a healthy checkup okay do you have anything no okay as marlene said we've seen this before i know i know but it's a it's a new year i mean it's a different year we're we're still dealing with that monster out there and i just was wondering um you know it's it's the big hog moving through the the uh boa and it's almost out that you have always good analogy with make the metaphor queen um okay well um it'll be thank you for that and um all right so ready for that now old business we're going to review the language for the consideration of library uh books and classroom resources and ideally recommend it be moved over for consideration to the policy committee so yeah um do you have i do i do so this is a tricky bit of um language here because we have existing language that says that if you have a complaint you talk to your teacher if you're not satisfied you talk to the principal if you're not satisfied go to the assistant superintendent and on and on it goes and so what we're trying to be very specific about here is if a parent has a request to reevaluate a resource we want to make that plain to them and we want to make sure that it's linked in things like the handbook at the high school for parents so that we we have an obligation to make sure that k through 12 parents know that they're they have an opportunity to re request a reevaluation of a resource or a material so as part of that it's sort of when you look at multiple um policies you can see that there's this 6000 series about instruction and it says when the curriculum committee meets there is a process by which a committee of teachers selects a resource that they they look at multiple sources they present one to the curriculum committee they defend why they want it it goes on display in the office here at central office for two weeks we take any public comment we keep that comment on record for years and then um you know it's it's put back out but if a parent has a concern that we want them to know what the process is so what i did was um and you can each have one of these the yellow on this document is the new language i sort of put up the what is not highlighted is some old language just so you could get a feel for what kind of a change are we making here so let me give you a moment to read the non-highlighted version and then the highlighted version again just to get a sense of what sort of a change if anything are we making are we just in my opinion it's just to clean up some language look okay so marlene you're saying that we're replacing the old language which is the top part i'm giving you an option with the new language which is the highlighted right and that top part only goes to number three but it's it's a public complaint policy that is fairly lengthy um well that that was my next question which was i thought the problem was where it what where this is located in within our materials right i think if we're going to do anything with it i think to put it in instructional makes it makes it clean because it's easy to refer to it we know where it is a parent would know where it is we can link it in agendas at open house etc and then the back the back is fairly new i took some old language and some new language and just sort of updated it so what is the source of the highlighted material cabe gave some samples um some of it comes from berlin public schools okay something similar portland public schools had similar yeah that was not um i did not take creative license no um is there still this part that says instructional materials that says the board of education is responsible for the selection and purchase of texts and other instructional materials or is that that part is all in the um it out in 6 000 i think i have it right okay no that answers my question yeah it's all in there when it this is not the right one it's uh 6 000.

thank you so do we also keep the one two three there you go is that the right one thanks i'm a little bit blind just a little bit if it's in the distance i've got you okay thank you up close together um all right so this outlines how we do things right that we have um one will be available that we put it out for two weeks textbooks are defined as a resource with 50 or more time upon the information you know all of that so so that we don't notice it all right okay great thank you so i do think it makes sense to put it as the next step yeah as a and this currently is under public communication public or community relations community relations community relations yeah um since we're dealing with instructional material and text then i think it makes more sense to put it so if they're like this language then we can we can say we want the policy committee to take this up and we've made some recommendation to the language yeah i i mean i think the most important part is that it's now under request for reconsideration of instructional materials rather than complaints right because that just sets the wrong tone yeah great yeah and also because we do review our inspection materials we should and we do and yep yep we take that into consideration as part of the five-year review also you know we would obviously deal with it then and the teacher might handle it then and there it may come to mary it may come to kevin it may come to me but what we've seen so far is that we haven't had any um it typically is resolved at the teacher level um okay so i'm a big opponent of the passive board a passive voice because what it does is it shifts um it takes responsibility off of somebody so the first sentence the perceived problem regarding instruction and instructional materials should be first discussed by the parents already a perceived problem by whom um you know i just think we open the door if we're not more specific there um and that's what happens with with a passive voice we could have anybody come in who really doesn't have the authority to to make it to to make a good request yeah um and i don't know what you guys think of that but that's my biggest concern here i mean we could have well it does say discussed by the parents and guardians and teachers yeah yeah and also i don't know i'm just trying to think what it might do what the language might do and there could be a community member who doesn't have kids in the school but that wants to address i mean that person also should be they should allow to talk with somebody if they have a concern i think um maybe if we just um acknowledged that there are there there are sometimes objections raised to materials by um interested community members parents guardians et cetera um and as a lead into this and then a perceived problem regarding instructional material should be first discussed because i you know i think there are people uh you know there there could be groups that come in and raise a ruckus that have nothing to do with the cheshire pool school system um so i think when if we could sort of define without uh you know protect the right of the community and the parents to have a say in this but not leave the door open to an outside agitating group that's and it's happened in we see it going on in other districts across the country so so i'm thinking i'm trying to starting to think how to best support that right so i think and again if you all think it's let's see let's back up a step though and say because i let's address that but let's address the first thing first do we think that this language or this type of a change is something before we words before any word smithing is done because i'm wondering this is this is the curriculum committee we're getting into some deep policy work now that's not our as we sit here is not our purview it really is the purview of the policy committee who would share this with the attorney and make sure that this was legit before it came back to the board of education but what we could do is say to our colleagues who are on that committee listen we want you to take this up we we discussed in committee you know the the the um issue of whether or not this is limiting to parents and guardians or it's open to community members so we want you to wrestle with that as you make your decisions with this new policy or with these policy language changes okay i'm not saying we shifted to them but i'm a little worried that we're taking on some work that is really meant for the other committee not to say hey let's give them the heads up that you know this is something that we we talked about within our committee and we think you should address it as you take this on in policy okay what do you think um i agree with that and also because it will come back to us and at that point we can also add our words missing yeah i mean any of us could attend the policy and right and the policy uh committee also will if we bring something up and say what about this they'll hopefully say well we talked about that and this was what we came up with okay i'm fine with that i just um as i said i think we um it's just too non-specific and that for a sentence for my taste but you know there are ways to remedy it and um it is a decision by the committee's assertive associate associated committee so um i raise it and let's see if others feel the same my boss sits on that committee so i can maybe talk to him about that that's where we put all the lawyers right so the question really is limit to parents or guardians are we open to community well actually i think it yeah i mean the community should be involved but is there any way to protect the interests of the districts from outside influence people who may not have a vested interest in cheshire public schools i think i grabbed that okay and so um no child shall be required to read a text or review material with the parent uh which parent or guardian's view is objectionable so as soon as the parent or guardian raises an objection that child no longer still can go a couple of different ways i'll give an example of a novel that was being read at the high school the parent didn't like the novel thought that the content was not particularly her taste for her child spoke to the english teacher the english teacher said we do a couple of things we can give your daughter a different novel to read or i could tell you where we are in the book give you a copy of the novel so you could read it alongside your child as we're going through that's what the parent opted to do okay there are some other things however that by law um parents can't opt out of um they can opt out of things like and you're gonna have to help me out here kevin but i'm thinking specifically at the elementary level some of the human growth and development lessons are one of them aids education um [Applause] so this is at the elementary level well it's at all levels but it's shared mostly at the uh and there's not even any room at those levels for substitute texts they have to read it's usually not in a text okay those those are areas where the parent can opt out of and but they can't opt out of the subject or or the in that particular unit of instruction that's what as i am these are the few what these are the few instances where the parents can have okay everything else if we deem this part of the curriculum then um then it's ultimately district decision so this hits the this hits the conversation that something that you know falls not within uh that would be that 50 another piece of instruction material are they all in the health curriculum exemption from instruction it's actually policy 6144.1 substance abuse education is required by state statutes for all students annually and students are not exempt if the religious belief and or teachings of a student or his or her parent or guardian are contrary to the content of the school subject or to any part of the school activity the student may be exempt from participation to receive such an exemption the parent or guardian must present a written request of exemption to the principal stating the conflict involved there's a medical exemption for phys ed a student could be exempted from instruction on aids upon receipt of a written request from exemption from her parents dissection of animals is another area exemption from these or any required instruction do not excuse a student from a total semester hours regard for graduation but they can get an exemption from the section of animals okay so those are some that are in our policy are we talking about gender-neutral pronouns and policies like you just said her i wonder if that are we doing any of that changing to there i know that some places have gone to that i do not know if that's anything that our policy committee has taken up we could just make them plural and use there would be okay any scrambler nuts i think i might suggest we're doing it like pretty widespread it's going to be our steel everywhere yeah i think a lot of places are if i'm not mistaken our last safe school climate committee survey questions had all changed hmm i think we had changed that and that was three years ago we wouldn't want to be behind on these issues okay ms chair i'm happy to make a motion hold on one second i'm a celebrator the committee should consider christ okay um for lack of a more graceful way to ask this does this put is this um neutral in terms of the burden of proof and that if a parent comes is it is is it assumed that the parent coming forward with an objection has to prove his case that there might or that there might actually be grounds for objection or is it on the district to prove why do you see what i'm asking why we need to keep a particular book i guess maybe it's just my personality but the way that i would view something like this is an opportunity to have an open communication and that i would be wanting to hear what might the things be that our district has overlooked in choosing a textbook so i'd want to know about that person's perspective and where they're coming from and what parts of the resource were questionable or what graphics were questionable things that were asking on the on the back page and then i would also view it as an opportunity to communicate the work that had been done by the committee in choosing that based on you know what standards were they trying to teach and what opportunities that they had and so use it as a learning tool for both sides to then you know take into consideration as we look for new materials so i i don't i don't know that i see it as a anyone has the proof it's more of a coming together to understand more about the perspective of the district and the perspective of the family to make the best choice for for that child and or perhaps to make a change moving forward okay so in um again i there's uh as we're making recommendations to policy maybe that needs to be stated as well that we are not looking to set up an adversarial relationship on in either direction but we are looking for something that will um facilitate communication will facilitate communication and actually um ensure that um whatever the objectives of the lesson are are conveyed the child gets it um in a matter in a manner that that um well just that they get it i just um i think if we stay at the outset what we're hoping to achieve with this they'll be i'm sensitive to it as well reconsideration um uh library books and classroom resources policy to the board of education policy committee for review and possible adoption by the full board of education so we could just leave it as construction materials if we could rather than all those things because they're all instructional materials okay do you want to share it i could put it up here so someone could read it yeah i was just trying to be consistent with the language that was that's fine i see [Music] so just before in that draft language for the reconsideration of instructional materials to board of education policy committee for review okay i will move okay all right one more time kevin i'm sorry thank you so much how about i read the motion then you can say so most right okay that's my little promotion for the draft reconsideration of instructional materials policy to the board of education policy committee for review so moved do i have a second sure okay um any discussion all right all in favor we're good thank you all right um well that was a tidy meeting i just can't go back okay um do we need to say something though about moving it to a different place it'll be in our minutes okay yeah in the minutes um we review this and the recommendation in the minutes is this possibly included in the 6000 series parentheses attraction for the board thank you okay good catch thank you um all right well that completes the agenda so um unless looking to to adjourn um i guess do i have a motion to adjourn so moved all right and all in favor all right okay thank you for being here you're welcome if only to

can you sing the pledge please of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you would you please take any no correspondence do we have any visitor statements no visitor statements even better you have you have nick's presentation we do okay well good evening everyone um it's my last presentation of the year so sad but last one best one am i right okay so starting off with student government it's a little more general um for this month because the first thing i want to talk about was this year's induction so this was held i think last week and i think it's a really great ceremony and it's very symbolic just because it's really passing the torch on from this year's officers and student representatives on to next year's and a lot of parents come out just to watch the whole ceremony and i think that's really important because i feel like especially with my parents i don't always get to see what i do inside the school so when they do come out um they get to really see who all i'm working with for the entire year um and then the next thing i have is spring fling sorry yeah my phone so um spring fling is back this year we actually had it last year i think that was our first in-person event that we had um so it'll be outside in the fields once again and we have volleyball kickball um cricket and ultimate frisbee this year um and presentations are going around each advisory missed it and shared that in the weekly email so all the mentors are just kind of debriefing their freshmen on what is supposed to happen and we have captains packets which kind of organize the whole team get the jerseys in order those are due april 27th and then the last thing for student government is the co-curricular fair so i think that's just a huge success every single year especially because we've been doing it consistently so we're really able to build upon our experiences each year and freshmen are truly the future of all student activities so it's really important to get them excited and prepared when they come to stevenson okay next up we have anti-racism and inclusivity week so this is our second annual themed week and i think this year a really big improvement was having a bunch of equity solely equity driven clubs host all the events this year i think last year fmp and some other culture creating clubs held some events but this year it was exclusive to affinity groups and equity driven clubs so some of the events included breaking bread with allies so that was just a bunch of different cultural breads and lots of cultural discussions and that was hosted by diversity council and fire and then we had um there was a movie playing and then dr haney led a discussion and i think a lot of sports teams were involved especially across they were rocking anti-racism and inclusivity week themed merch for a day um and then a lot of them are there having those discussions so it's really great to have sports involved with this week as well and then we also had a complimentary advisory activity so that was led by the counselors so they always come in on wednesday and we went through a little bingo activity that just went um that cover topics like civil rights activists and um representative symbols in the media okay the next thing is fmp so they kind of had their own section of the co-curricular fair so mentors could sign up to lead tours and tours were delivered in all different languages and just really inclusive to all the incoming freshman families and then they also had their mentor onboarding meeting which i think is super important because fmp is truly a tradition-based program and everyone um every fmp each year has to uphold certain standards so really getting them prepared for next year is crucial to the club's success and then last slide um are the highlights so one of the most important events that just happened um a few weeks ago was day of dance so i think one key aspect of this day is that all levels of dance are included so dance one two three and four and then also kind of all the concert dances and melange and a bunch of other dance groups so um that happened periods one through eight and a bunch of my friends during their free periods went out to the pac to support their friends um and then the next thing is the stevenson styler fashion show so two of my friends abby and izzy have been working on this for months i think that really just speaks to how enriching all of our fine arts classes are um and i think there were over 15 50 student design outfits that were on the runway and then this week we have earth week so there are a bunch of different events hosted by green team i think there's a vegan bake sale tomorrow and then there's also a tree planting activity after school on friday so that's super exciting and then there was also a tour of the greenhouse after school today um which i love the greenhouse miss o'connor my bow teacher last year during coven like let us have class up there all the time and then we did a little lab up there so definitely love the greenhouse and then the next thing is the ap art show so a bunch of my friends who are in ap art have been working on their portfolios all year and i think that also goes for kind of their ap test so it's really great to have them displayed and i think all their hard work was definitely reflected in the amount of people that showed up during lunch periods and during their free periods to go watch all the displays um the last thing is just the picture on the left um stephen or spanish honor society hosted a salsa night and i think they're sponsored by um senora antiero who is my friend who was my freshman spanish teacher um and they just enjoyed some delicious salsa and chips and then also danced on friday um and then the last slide drum roll we're going to boston college [Applause] i went to boston like what not this past weekend but last weekend and i like visited i was like this is where i'm at so definitely super exciting i was like very split going into it and then i just kind of knew once i visited what was the other choice northeastern so both in boston though yeah so i went to the admitted student state northeastern and then like left halfway through went to boston college and took commitment of photos and then that was that wow awesome wow very good congratulations we hope you do student government there too yes until absolutely thank you so much thank you guys so much for an amazing year i can't believe it's over my last site visit for fmt tomorrow too so a little sentimental are you bringing your replacements yes i can come to the nick can you bring your replacement next month um yes uh i think i talked to dr eddie a little bit um and i know dr gergens going through um like applications and stuff so i'll definitely meet with the next representative over the next month um and then be here i'm not sure if i'll do the majority of the presentation but i'll definitely aid and all that exactly pass the torch thank you so much thank you have a great night all right and that brings us to um the next part of the meeting which is uh our ambassador awards which i assume is why everybody is here so it's good to see all of you tonight um our ambassador award is an award given by the board of education to students who have achieved a significant milestone in their academic or co-curricular careers here at stevenson and tonight we have a number of students who scored a perfect score on the act which is a huge accomplishment so we can't be any more excited and proud to recognize those students this evening and to do that we have our director of curriculum instruction and assessment mr mark honestcheck and our board of education president mr frost so thank you take it away thank you so we had 17 perfect scores to present tonight that's it 17.

i am here yes christopher espinoza here all fuller jenny hagstrom here gary pavich here joanna vazquez drexler here nancy kupka this year allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all tonight's uh student perspectives is from north high and i think courtney's going to kick things off here oh no good evening everybody um i'm really really excited tonight to introduce you to some a few members of our empowerment club and um throughout this whole year i have just been so impressed by the amount of service that they have done for our community for other communities for the world frankly and it's just been something that i really wanted to highlight because i'm so proud of the work that they've done and they have taken on some enormous projects and um i've been talking a lot with karen spar-thomas who is here with them this evening as well and um i just wanted to make sure that they were recognized for their work because it's been really impressive and i'm going to let the kids introduce themselves here this uh this evening and talk a little bit about empowerment club and what they've done this year so if you guys want to come up hi we are at the dgn empowerment club my name is pelvi fisher rajan fisher molly fisher and madeline from [Laughter] we are a nonpartisan club and we aim to educate and raise awareness on current issues in our country in our world and in our community we believe that everyone deserves equal rights and we believe that everyone's voices should be heard so we try to recreate that change starting at dgn sorry so some recent drives we've done we have done lots of stuff this year but two of the things we want to highlight are our book donation drive and our ukraine drive we did this year in our book donation drive we donated over 4 000 books to books for cause along with some dvds and then we uh through our ukraine drive donated two and a half tons of resources to communities in ukraine very good very good um we also did a book drive so the book drive collected books and books and dvds through our organization called books for car books for cause and this organization basically gave books to impoverished communities and all over the all over the globe just to give them like give these communities access to like books and dvds that they wouldn't have normally and there was a there was 4200 books donated including the dvds so that's like a really good number just yeah so another really incredible opportunity we had was to uh do a drive to um supply some items for ukraine uh so we had an amazing turnout with 5 000 pounds of resources donated we collected hygiene products and non-perishable food and we just really saw a really inspiring turnout everyone really came together and we just really saw a really inspiring turnout everyone really came together we had dozens of awesome students at dgn pitch in to help us as you can see in the photos organized the things we needed lots of packing lots of stocking there was lots of boxes to be filled and over the weekend we saw teachers staff and parents come and help us actually load these things to be sent out and uh it wasn't really some intangible process we were able to actually watch as these uh these items were then transported to ukraine so we saw on tuesday the um the donations flew 4664 miles from chicago to warsaw poland uh the next day wednesday they were driven another 202 miles from warsaw to the border of ukraine um thursday they were driven an additional 40 miles from the border of ukraine to leve and this was just a week after we finished boxing up our collections and so on friday those donations were distributed and we were able to see just being able to make a small impact all the way around the world so that was really cool so like i mentioned we have been doing other things with the empowerment club and one of the things we try and do is educate the dgn community about different communities um in our area and so through the sign language club uh members of empowerment club were taught how to speak basic sign language we made valentines for senior members in our community we did a frito collo project where we collaborated with art club to make paper mache flowers that would replicate frida kahlo's hair piece we made tote bags with the sustainability committee of the huma of the empowerment club and we also wrote letters to legislators on different issues that people wanted to talk to them about so yeah thank you any questions for our students one thing that's so impressive is that these students not only design all of these things on their own this is not any teacher or staff member saying you should do this this is their these are their ideas and their work and their project and their sphere of influence is so large um everybody at north high knows what empowerment club is and what they do and it's so impressive so thank you guys so much [Applause] so how many students are in the empowerment club anywhere so we're the larger empowerment club as a whole which is a lot of members each year but then we also break into smaller committees that people can join however many they want just to sort of be able to focus on issues that matter most to them so we all help lead the humanitarian committee but then there's sustainability march for our lives voter outreach things like that um so those all have dozens of students in them as well and how do you decide on those things like you said you're the humanitarian but how you just said well let's just collect 5 000 pounds of resources for and send them across the world how do you decide to do do what you're going to focus on what you're going to focus on oh um this is i guess a funny story for the bookstore um uh drive we did we were going over all of the stuff we had like in our attic over winter break and my mom was like man i wish we just had some place to put all these books we have so much and so apparently everyone else's moms thought this day we just kept getting more and more like okay so many boxes but um stuff like that just kind of like randomly happened i guess well john you found the books for cause online right uh yeah we found it yeah we just looked up like different organizations close to in like the chicagoland area where we could where we could just donate this like massive amount of books and that books for cause was one of the like highest rated organizations in the area cool very cool all right well thank you thank you for all you're doing i just have to because i because i have to i have to so margaret mead right i have to read it because i always threw it up but i just might one of my favorite quotes in the world is never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people to change the world in fact it's the only thing that ever has so thank you so much for all that you do thank you well that's it for the fun part of the meeting okay we'll move to the approval of minutes we have a motion for the board of education to prove the minutes of the march 21 2022 business meeting the april 11th 2022 workshop meeting and the april 11th 2022 closed meeting so moved second chris and terry thank you very much christopher espinoza aye terry pavicich aye joanna vazquez drexler hi mike davenport epstein jerrell fuller jenny hagstrom aye and nancy kupka aye the minister approved thank you next is the uh and the meeting agenda is the uh the meeting agenda includes two opportunities for comments from the audience the first reception of visitors is intended for audience members to address the board about any agenda item on which the board will vote and the second reception of visitors is intended for audience members to address the board on any topic pertaining to community high school district 99.

15th at 6 pm also incidentally if anybody has any high school kids that are interested in seasonal help at the parks or public works in sherville they are hiring for the summer and that's all thank you dr malcolm i'm sorry yes thank you just to make everyone aware that the lake central education foundation in partnership with lake central school corporation is uh doing a collection to help assist with a this sounds really weird a bucket in the classrooms of lake central because of emergency needs when we were in the lockdown back in september it created a lot of problems and teachers for example didn't have snacks or they didn't have tissues things like that that we need to have available so if you're interested in donating that banner can be found on our home web page legislative i have nothing to report and the dyer parks department they are working on a splash pad also and that's all thank you dr madeline nothing to report tonight thank you and i have nothing for either of my committees so we'll move on to the official school board business topics consent agenda dr barack thank you again seek board approval of the minutes from our work session and regular board meetings from april the 4th and seek board approval for the claims payroll and extracurricular expenditures you received last week i will make a motion to approve those items we have a motion by mrs kelly second second by mr marshall any discussion hearing none all in favor aye all right motion passes thank you is there any public no there's no public comments for action items so we'll move right into our official school board business topics regular agenda dr varaka thank you we are fortunate to be able to recognize a lot of outstanding student achievement this evening and we will begin with mrs tucker from homan elementary thank you i'd first like to take just a minute and thank you for having us here and having home in here so thank you to the board and to lake central administration we had this unique opportunity um the sherwood parks department had planned to put in install the splash pad that you were speaking about just a minute ago um so they thought it'd be interesting that if they get some input from children since children are going to be the one using it so um one of my first grade teachers mrs geiss and then also she was assisted from the technology standpoint of it with um julie moore ms moore the students in her class took part in making some designs to present then to the um parks department and then from there they made some choices and they chose one of they had three designs to pick from and then they went ahead and chose one so i'm gonna turn it over to these two ladies and they can tell you more about what happened and we have the kids here and they will tell you about their project that they did also okay well i'll i'll begin before do you want to operate this there it is all right so at open house for our students and parents i met my student maddy and her father is the president of the sheriff parks department and we were talking and he asked me he said i i have a you know proposition i'm kind of walling some things around um we're in the in the beginning stages of creating a splash pad for the chervil the town of sherville would your students be interested in participating because my daughter is really excited about it and so i thought that's a great opportunity you know especially you know with the collaboration and the higher level thinking so we decided to take it and oh my goodness i at first i thought how am i gonna do this and then i didn't the kids did it was great um so we talked about do i hit the arrow going okay we talked about what splash pads are and i gave them a history of splash pads and actually i think it was 1920s and 1930s public polls were really big and then in the 50s people were looking more into getting pools in their homes so the public weren't being used as frequently and then they just recently splash pads are popping up all over and we talked in great detail about why the safety and the sustainability and why they're safe and i wish my students like to say why they're safe anybody grace okay okay why are splash pants safer than pools because and most people with weird chairs can sink in them people with wheelchairs can access the splash pad they can't go in a yes no um it's rough because they don't want you like to fall and like yeah it gives you traction right okay good job [Applause] [Music] deck of oh can you not hear my teacher voice oh okay so mr basic provided us with a deck of splash pad options and it was like this thick and so we created um like three different sets and we talked about and i showed it on a powerpoint presentation what do you want what would you like what do you think would be fun how would you like to develop it what is important in terms of where children should be and where the older children should be so i mean they were so good about differentiating that smaller children need to be in one area the larger children need to be in the other and they were really adamant about having a private section for parents so that they could sit and relax and have lunch while they're watching their children so i thought that was really smart so i showed them a bunch of layouts and then we narrowed it down to three um different um different ideas so the first one was a lily pad idea and they worked so hard like they we got butcher paper and we cut it out and then they they are analyzing all the parts that they wanted and then they drew them on their splash pad and then i had them present now i don't know how good the noise is or how the volume is do you think i can play that video we'll try okay anyway we're gonna move on to the butterfly all right so that another group thought a butterfly would be great and the idea behind that was the middle section of the butterfly would be a picnic area for the parents so one section of the butterflies for the little kids one's for the big kids one's for um children that need you know accessibility to wheelchairs or crutches or things like that so that was their idea and they were just so engaged in this in this activity and it was so much fun and then the last one the last group just wanted a big rectangle um and they really did a good job of designing and putting things where they thought it should be and they had walls with water coming out of them so um they just did an excellent eye they did a great job like they took it above and beyond what i even thought we could do with it so we did brainstorming activities so what do you think of when you think of splash pads what equipment what people what feelings colors things do you think of so they were talking about frogs that spit out water they were keeping toddlers and babies in mind they thought the greens blues and whites would be fun definitely the picnic tables and umbrellas and then what are you thinking what is your favorite part of a splash pad and why so we discussed that um somebody one of them said well that's a great place to have summer birthday parties which it is and then what's your least favorite part and then why do people like to visit splash pads instead of pools so um they did an excellent job but mr basic is here and he is going to give us an update on the construction of it and the location and see we're on the cutting edge because dyer's next so first of all i i just want to say uh mrs geiss is totally undercutting her involvement in this i when i reach out to her i was expecting like oh they're going to spend like 30 minutes drawing a picture you know and then we'll collect the pictures and maybe we can pull something out of it no this was a whole curriculum the whole history lesson the kids had to do public speaking they had to present like she's just such a testament to like how amazing our schools are and our teachers are because my daughter learned so much going through this process and she's been bugging me to be a part of the park board for a long time and like this was perfect and everyone in the class did absolutely phenomenal and what we did as a board was we tallied up the water features that were used on the different designs and we said okay we're going to use this as essentially a voting system the water features that were used the most those are the ones that are going to be included in the splash pad so your kids literally designed the pad that we had we had to go with the set shape for what it's going to look like so it's an oval it's going to be at the chevrolet community center in the back kind of behind where the community center is where that log cabin is it should be done by the end of may and we're going to do a ribbon cutting uh as you guys said uh june 15th i just want to invite all the parents to come we're going to be doing a ceremony to honor all your kids um we're going to try to get a plaster on our mrs geiss's class and all the kids that can sit permanently at the splash pad so that you guys get recognition for all your hard work and that's where it's at if you go to the community center right now they're already tearing up the ground to lay the pipe so yeah we're really excited and thank you guys for being involved really appreciate it okay so now we're going to recognize each of the students all right ben ashe come on down buddy come on sweetie a special thank you to miss moore because without her technology skills she was a very integral part of us creating this she was there helping me with ideas how are we going to put this all together so she deserves just as much recognition she was amazing [Music] grace and blackbridge [Applause] paisley banal [Applause] brooklyn coaches down mrs lin mala tested nick and mrs melissa cummins on november 15th holmen participated in the elementary spell bowl competition that was held virtually through the state the team of eleven students of fourth graders was led by our two coaches mrs mello tessa nick and mrs cummins and holman plays second in the state out of 65 teams we're so proud of them and now i'm going to turn the mic over to them and they'll call the students down all of the parents and students just like any sport spellbill requires commitment by both the students and the parents our team committed to learning 750 new words and their parents supported them every step of their way their dedication and hard work really paid off and we'd like to now recognize those students jason abell isaac alvarez lauren broon victoria bustos emily zado [Applause] zoe hemphill paul hooper [Applause] johnny jordan aiden natsinger [Applause] kyler richards and addison skiff thank you very much [Applause] next i'd like on march 12th congratulations and thank you for everything that you do now i'd like to invite mr newton from keller middle school good evening i am privileged to congratulate two of our groups that have done very well recently the first one is our eighth grade band also at the state contest back in march our 8th grade band earned a gold rating with distinction which is the highest honor that a band can achieve so i would like to bring up mrs lita cena lopez um the killer director of band [Applause] one thing i would like to share with the with the band um the group that won they've gone through most of their time through a pandemic and they've have really had to improvise i know mrs lopez has spent you know time researching the best way and safest way to be able to conduct band and she has done a great job with that and with with the virtual learning um she had some great things put in place that really helped the band achieve at a high level so of all years real special um recognition for eighth grade band for the job that they did under you know pretty adverse conditions so thank you i will actually say it's probably one of the strongest bands i've had come through um the program in a long time actually which is kind of remarkable with the situation so i'm really proud of the kids glad to be able to receive the award for them thanks ken next up i would like to congratulate the kaler grimmer dance team at their state competition back in march this team were crowned state champs and junior high hip-hop um so very i'm proud of this group so at this time if i hours a week just with our dance team that doesn't count school and their own extracurricular dance classes so for them to juggle all of it and stay on top of their grades and be great students is something we also really are proud of them for so great job girls okay oh yeah okay so if i call your name come down if not they'll get it bren burwanger emma chalos irish sharon jessica cleghorn scares me a little bit she's staring at me right now so she's gonna go first so mrs marsha's choir seventh and eighth grade earned gold with distinction this year at isma [Applause] thank you i combined the seventh and eighth grade choir we went in at group three and the kids just did a phenomenal job to get with distinction that means you have three judges you have to get a score of the combined three scores of lower than 31.5 and our kids got a 30.

tonight yes sir jane is on deck tonight and so welcome to our curriculum team i'm sorry we had a lot of moving parts tonight so thank you for being patient with us but we're getting to uh the second item on our agenda this evening which is our curriculum team presentation and if i understand correctly um the pandemic threw this team a curveball and you were supposed to present two years all right so as you're pulling that uh up i'll turn it over to mr jane and you can introduce your team how about that love to thank you so much for having us here tonight we this has been a long time in the making and uh one of the things that i'm really excited to be able to share with you all tonight is just their growth over the last two years how they've stuck with the program of learning as adults and then implementing good programs and interventions for their kids to adjust to not only how they were growing pre-pandemic pandemic and then back into the full classroom all those stages i think will come out in their story tonight so i'm having introduced them to you we'll start with mary smagga mary smagga is here in her fifth year with us she's also the algebra 2 team leader along with jeff janners stephanie ross is here with us in her 11th year we have sydney hendricks serving as the team leader for this team and we have shakti shawn mugasandran who is also one of our alumni here so she is uh back home at stevenson in her fourth year and uh eric anderson is here in his ninth year as a teacher so thank you for having us thank you for coming all right so we want to start out by giving you stevenson's working definition of sel which can be seen dear right it's to engage students in the development of their social skills and help them access emotional intelligences to better support their learning so as everyone knows social emotional learning is a huge part of success in the classroom so during our time with molly over the past two-ish years we've been able to explore the five castle competencies which are self-management self-awareness social awareness responsible decision-making and relationship skills you might be like why is there an arrow pointing to that it's because with our work we decided to dive deeper into developing relationship skills within our classroom because it's such an important concept especially because the mathematics classroom is a highly collaborative environment so as eric mentioned we actually started this work back in fall of 2019 so we are in a very unique position because we've been doing this for a while so here's a brief timeline but we'll talk you through it as we go through our presentation bringing us from fall to 2019 up to right now so when we dove into our student voice survey data with molly during release days we noticed one thing that stuck out to us was classroom belonging so back in the fall of 2019 when we started this work only 64 of our students were responding favorably to feeling like they belonged in the classroom and to us that stood out and we wanted to know what does it actually mean to feel like you belong in a math classroom so we decided to dive into that so as we were diving into this classroom belonging we looked at all of the questions on the student voice survey under classroom belonging there are several but one that really stuck out to us was how much do you matter to others in this class when we asked our students this question only 55 percent of students responded favorably but we know when adolescents have strong connections with adults and peers their academic engagement and performance is increased and we feel as though these strong connections with adults and peers are not possible if students do not feel as though they belong in the classroom or they matter to others in the classroom so we set out to establish a culture where students feel they are valued members of the classroom community and that was ultimately our goal that's been guiding our work up until today so as teachers we were able to define what classroom belonging meant for us but we really wanted to take the time to have our students define it for us so we started off with giving our students a survey in class for them to be able to define for us what does it mean to belong in the classroom one of the questions we asked was in this class i feel like i matter when and the responses that we received where our students shared with us that they mattered when they were able to contribute their ideas with one another when they were working together when people were really listening to their voices when they were collaborating with one another and we wanted to continue to create those opportunities and change our instructional strategies so students could get to know one another and really encourage each other when they were working together in the classroom so as we received this data the next time that we were doing this was march of 2020 and at that point things changed as we went fully remote and this quote that we found as we were resuming our work this year is that when school doors when schools closed their doors in march 2020 these connections went away as many so we really wanted to understand how classroom belonging changed from that time where we had started working with it and over those uh next couple years so in the spring of 2020 as things were remote we had 66 percent of students responded favorably in this area of classroom belonging however in the fall of 2020 when we were completely remote 55 percent of students responded favorably however through the course of the year we still saw positive growth and 61 of students responded favorably after that time as some students were remote and some students remained remote in person and then this fall as we resumed this in person to begin sharing our work with you again 68 of students responded favorably as we returned to the classroom okay sorry can i test a quick question mike i have like pandemic brain like time has just kind of disappeared for me um so spring 2020 was that 66 was that after we went remote or before well the survey would have been before okay so kids took the survey probably weeks before yeah yeah yeah like literally a few weeks yeah yeah okay again my brain is a little fried from the pandemic god thank you so we knew returning to the class this fall when we were back in person it was going to be critical for us to continue this work in helping students and giving students the opportunity to really build relationships um and so we did this by integrating some sel competencies around relationship skills into our mathematics curriculum um we did some complex complex tasks where students really had to rely on one another we did jigsaw instruction where students would become masters of certain topics and then they would bring that information back to a small group where they were seen as the master and could share and that really just allowed us to focus in on our building relationships skills given as mary said the mathematics classroom is so collaborative so we wanted to ensure that we made our matters explicit so we want to make sure that by doing these activities in our classroom that cindy mentioned we were building relationships that would then result in our students having a sense of belonging so during this time we would coach our students on what it looked like how it felt what it sounded like to be an active team member and to build those relationships with their peers we would then debrief those tests so after the jigsaws and the complex tasks we would tell them why we did it or have them think like hey how did i help my team members there what could i have done differently which then we provided feedback as teachers and then peers gave each other feedback and we debriefed on how was i an effective team member and how did that make me feel within the classroom so after all of that work we are here in spring of 2022 so this was actually just given this semester and 77 of our students responded favorably to classroom belonging which we attribute a lot to the work that we've done throughout not only this year but the past two years we know though that our work is not done we want to continue we've seen the relationships bloom so much that we want to continue that work moving forward so there's the castle competencies that mary talked about and we dove into what makes successful relationships and through the search institute they actually have a framework that's based off of what does it mean to have successful relationships and it focuses on those five criteria so our plan moving forward is to make sure that we're still providing those opportunities for students to reflect and give each other feedback and also having more interdependence work and that's it we want to thank you so much for listening and having us here a little delayed but we're excited what questions can we answer for you oh sorry what i might be a dinosaur in this but math you know back in the day was sit down don't look at anybody don't talk to anybody can you give me a sense of how you collect you're talking a lot about collaboration so i guess i'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around how in a geometry class in particular how do you collaborate like what kinds of activities do you do how do you do that yeah in the geometry classroom yeah so one of the tasks we talk about is tasks without information where it really means they're not given the complete amount of information one idea that we came up with this year is students when they look at a problem they were missing one detail to solve the problem but if they interacted with another peer at their table they would find out oh you have one other piece of information different than i do and then they'd be like wait oh yeah you have something else too and then they'd start to see if they were working together they'd be rewarded with more information than if they were just isolated and that was just one example of how we incorporated collaboration inside of our instructions perfect thank you that was actually my question but just a little different than mrs noah said it was you know you want to be you're striving for a collaborative but when i went to i'm asking the same question when i went to school if we wanted to learn geometry or trig whatever it was there was a here's what you're trying to learn and do you get i don't know what the jigsaw puzzle would have to do with what i was trying to learn i understand the collaborative nature of the jigsaws or of any puzzle but it's just unclear to me how when you're tasked to understand i it's just unclear to me with something like math that math never was in my world and i understand how in a collaborative environment you can learn more you know merv roberts here used to always say teaching was the best form of learning and uh and i drank the kool-aid i i agreed but i just don't see it in math am i missing the boat so i would say one of the things we call it a jigsaw instruction activity it's not actually a jigsaw puzzle i didn't know but i meant because i was like maybe i should have it but i think it's more like understanding that you're not the expert all the time and it's okay to meet other people so we create environments or tasks where students might feel like i've got this or they might not and providing the opportunity in that spirit yeah if i'm sitting here and i want to ask johnny or jane whoever is sitting next to me how do i do that is that okay to do yeah yeah yeah and i think that's exactly like one of the things that uh is a joy as i walk into classrooms throughout the year is the happy noise in math classrooms yeah right that's all i feel good but i mean well but i think the noise the noise that you're hearing is kids conjecturing they're asking like could this be possible they're going through hypotheses like when would this be possible so all of those things about wondering about what is true and not true in these in these cases that they're presented in design they have to really wrestle with what they've learned in an unseen and unfamiliar context to make new learning happen okay one last question i understand what you're saying and it's it sounds exciting and it's wonderful the thing but it could not be managed is that process manageable for a teacher yeah or teacher yeah i think a lot of it goes back to the norms that you establish in your classroom um i think it's it's uncomfortable certainly at first for students and for teachers because there's not you kind of have to give up some control um but at the same time you're giving the students the control so there is still control in your classroom you've just delegated that responsibility to the students and it starts out very specific i have to tell you exactly when to talk and how long to talk but at this point in the year i say you are the captain and they know exactly what that means and and that helps helps us manage these tasks they're responsive within those guidelines so great i am not a math expert um however one of the things i do know is that what um amy and dave are describing or wondering really does represent kind of the big split in mathematics education in the early 90s mid 90s right and to this division's credit you know the stevenson mathematics division was really on the forefront dave of taking on that idea of collaborative learning and mathematics so that it wasn't just an isolated activity kind of the drilling skill approach but stevenson was one of the places um that really kind of led the way nationally with other schools to really think differently about mathematics teaching and learning and make it a more collaborative experience why why would other subject areas be collaborative in nature where we know learning is a social social experience and not mathematics and in fairness i mean that is still kind of a debate that's raging 25 years later even when the data clearly shows that the teaching and learning the mathematical tasks and practices that you guys are teaching and you guys are all nctm followers right like i mean we're doing all that work there's still debate out there about you know how should we be teaching math and so i i give this group a lot of credit because i do too it would be very easy yeah it would be very easy to kind of fall back onto old practices but i don't i don't want to speak for you but i can't imagine we would ever go backwards right no no yeah it seems so it's so great that this group in particular your no is interesting are you really that solid is this are you convinced because this is your this is your baby you've got your arms around something is this better than it was yesterday absolutely 100 i will tell you that having a previous life before education and knowing where our kids are headed into in terms of the marketplace albeit that was 25 years ago but knowing what industry would expect of learners their ability to help kids manage social skills demands to manage interrelationship skills to manage even conflict in thought those are strategies and skills that is priming of the math class to learn the math but also to engage as learners and then to carry it out into the workplace i i'm convinced that the work of this group work with the division and how we're engaging kids in mathematics is the right way all right i have two questions i say let's go get a beer i have two questions um i mean obviously it seems intuitive that what you're doing would impact the belonging and the questions the castle competencies that you're talking about but how do you actually know you don't have a control group so how is it that you test and know what it is that it is this jigsaw it is as collaborative that is impacting the belonging and i'm asking not only just how do you know but things that you know specifically which tasks are causing it to occur it would then i assume help you [Music] make that evolve and have what else you focus on or emphasize um i mean aside from feeling good and intuitively thinking it's got to be helping is there is there any way of measuring this so i think one of the things that i go back to because i i do think like we have a whole different group of students each year so when we look i forget where it was eric slide there we go when we look here like we think about these two students are the same students or from fall of 2020 or sorry no spring of 2021 to fall no that's not right either it was my slide yeah just kidding this one yay okay so fall to spring is the same student so although we can't look too much at the whole picture we have incorporated things and we just ask constantly for student feedback so giving students a voice i think is one of the strengths of the what we chose to do because we're constantly talking to our kids getting feedback just seeing how things are going in general what can we improve on stuff like that in my second clip thank you my second question is directly for am i pronouncing it correctly exactly yeah so you're a you're an alum uh alumnus having grown up in this process do you bring a different perspective do you see how this is uh you having any different reaction to this than others that's a really good question i was actually gonna talk when dressing was talking about how like in this future industry like our students at stevenson high school like when they walk out and they're understanding like how to collaborate and they're understanding how to critically think like i would say like i was a student not too long ago and i walked out having those same thoughts and being able to like walk into university or walk into a collaborative nature or just like in a like college group that you have like how do you interact and how do you talk to those people and then how do you um you know step up be the leader or understand how to like be like okay now it's your turn now it's my turn you know those are the things that i even learned in mr jane's classroom because he was my teacher um so yeah so i think that um it does make such a big difference and i think taking the time to you know have the students understand why it is important because sometimes they don't see it in a math classroom they're like oh like it's it's my my problem right now i'm gonna do it right now and i want to get it right right but like really like it should be like i have four people around me like how can i make sure everyone's here and everyone's learning together and then when i do share i'm also learning right so yeah it definitely does matter so you do think that our students are graduating learning critical thinking skills yeah 100 and this class is one of the greatest classes for them to be able to learn those people what did you ask that i she was i found what she's saying fascinating and important and one of the things that we talk about often that we give lip service to is critical thinking skills and so i was curious if she thinks we're truly because this is going to come after my graduation speech we're truly teaching critical thinking in our school yeah i would say like not only with the mathematics critical thinking but also like just building relationship like what does it mean to be like a social member of a community on both of those critical thinking skills the problem is she's so shy you know it doesn't count she knows it's also i mean part of the the reality is too like when when kids step out of college into the real world what is the expectation for how they're going to work are they expected to work alone in isolation or are they expected to work in collaboration in groups and the answer is of course they're going to be expected to collaborate with others so why not you know learn how to collaborate in that way now so that it's not an on-the-job you know experience you know so i i just think it's great what you guys are doing [Applause] thank you thank you for your support thanks for having us thank you i got the kool-aid right here all right so moving right along uh the next item the agenda is uh approval of our uh three year calendars for the 23 24 24 25 25 26 school year and a revised calendar for the 2022-2023 school year can i have a motion so moved okay and um just couple comments uh the first is um we are we are making a change to next year's calendar again uh and it is with apologies that we do so carol will get this and jamie will get this up on the website as soon as possible but we did um get a lot of feedback and a lot of information this year it seems like during the pandemic years uh a lot more schools began taking the friday before thanksgiving i'm sorry wednesday the wednesday before thanksgiving off in the past some did some didn't i think in the pandemic years more and more schools chose to take that wednesday off this year we did not and we did get a lot of feedback that nearly every other school in lake county in the area did and that put a lot of our faculty and staff in a tough position of daycare and things like that so we do want to make a revision to next year's calendar take that wednesday before thanksgiving off and in order to keep everything at the required number of days we'll just push the last student attendance day to friday may 26th which is our graduation day however we've had this happen in the past and we will move um you know all the events up for our seniors by about a day so they can get practice in and do all the things they need to do to be able to get to the seer center and graduate on time so that is for next year's calendar and then as far as our three-year calendars are concerned we are following pretty much the same model as we have in the past trying to keep our calendars as consistent as we can with our three meter districts so we work on these with 102 103 district 96 and for the most part we try to align the start of the school year the breaks and you know kind of the the days off um throughout the year um so we're bringing that tonight to you for your approval those two different calendar groups any questions for dr twaddle thank you for finally taking a day off at thanksgiving when my kids graduate i appreciate it sorry i couldn't resist okay would you please uh pull the board certainly no i oh well i had a question go ahead oh i was just gonna ask what did we do about the religious holidays oh the not the not school days yeah so we're that one is still kind of out there as a conundrum um we still are have two-thirds of our community has those days as non-school days um so you know we try to stay aligned with with our three feeders um so district 96 district 102 still also have those days off so for this next cycle you know we still have those as non-school days and then we're going to try to see you know if we can get the whole you know consortium aligned um because right now um they're still taking those days off as well and i i think the other eric and i have talked about it as well there's still the combination of the the teachers they're still a large percentage of the students who would be out in those days it would be out in those days or that we anticipate would be um but it's kind of a calendar to continue that when he could the community is definitely changing and it's an inexact science to determine you know what exactly is the number of folks who would be out there's a question you can't necessarily ask but we have a fairly good idea and in the meantime it would create some havoc not being on the same schedule as our feeder schools i know 103 where you're at it's in a little bit different boat yeah so you know it was different for both kids yeah right so oh right exactly yeah and so again with maybe even larger group of people it would be you know different as well so our hope is that if we're going to make any changes with those three days that that would be a consortium decision so we're trying to work through that but thank you for asking that's a good question so i'll call your name again arguable bye courson wounds i shang hi thank you weisberg all right frost carries a hundred percent so the next item is uh sorry is our letters of intent it's a first reading um and so we'll bring this back uh in may for a fuller uh summary um but in the meantime feel free to read through the attachment um and if you have any questions um just let mark uh know or myself and we'll be happy to answer those for you uh the document that you see here will be slimmed down quite a bit this is just our current brainstorming uh with the administrative team we wanted to give you a chance to produce through that if you are interested if you're not you're going to get a slimmed down version at the may board meeting okay you'll see personnel items uh there as well um the approval of the human resources report will be in the consent agenda and then that brings us to the business section and sean i only have one item one question about the private placement coordinator is that a new position or are we just replacing um it is [Music] the question was about our private placement coordinator um it is a kind of a new position um the old position was 10 months um but it has it really it needs to be a 12 month because it's it's a reshaping existed it's just in a different way shape or form okay right the responsibilities have just grown too much so okay that's a good question uh and that brings us to approval of door access panels yep so i only have one item tonight and i thought everybody was here for that today i'll leave you stop okay sorry um the uh as you know uh back in 2012 um we began uh the process of uh implementing a door access system to better provide safety and security for our building it also uh helped eliminate the need for keys many keys the door access system has helped us not only provide a safe and secure environment for students and staff but it's also been able to help us with investigative procedures as it tracks people going in and out of doors when they swipe in and out of certain areas or try to get into certain areas unfortunately uh like all technology uh it it becomes outdated and gets its end of useful life um these are the door access panels specifically um fall into that category the typical life span on these is about five to seven years so we're a little bit overdue which is good what complicates them this time is that the existing panels are actually obsolete um so as they're failing them as they're failing we are finding we're trying to find ways to support those systems right now we've been able to support them but we are in need of replacing them and upgrading them to something that isn't obsolete that has more parts available on the ability to swap in and out um it is not a cheap um thing but it is a necessary thing um the cost to replace these panels is 385 184.45 um this includes not only the panels themselves but the installation the programming that goes along with this one thing that's nice about the new panels is that they allow us the ability to connect more doors to each panel and this time the doors can be connected both wirelessly or as a hardwired door so our external doors are all hardwired but our internal doors are all wireless how many panels are there sean uh 87 i believe 10 to 15 20 doors panel correct yeah and so placing them all at the same time correct this is one of those because of the need we're gonna save um you know they siemens will we'll take a couple um for parts as we go through um to kind of you know this summer yep correct so um tonight we are in fact asking the board of education to approve the door access panels that connect the door modules to the software program at a cost not to exceed three hundred eighty-five thousand one hundred eighty four dollars and forty five cents a promotion please tell moved call second i have a question sure what is the door pin uh so the door panels think of it as like an electrical box uh is that the thing we swipe on that is the actual door lock itself yes so those door locks actually connect back to a a panel like an electrical panel that has the um modules that kind of talk about doing these no no no the doors themselves those blocks correct yeah those doors the locks themselves are fine it's the panels connected you got it's intermediary between that and the software so the hip bone is connected to the joint where is that go next uh then it goes so then it goes from that to the um see cure software package which is what we program every door and every user so every user has their own access every door has its own access and we use that's a secure product from siemens in a software house which what is this and have we've been happy with the way our door panel system has worked actually the the door access panel has been lights out since day one it's great it has been thankfully we've never actually had to use it in a large setting like a lockdown but we do have the ability to go in to the secure software and lock all the doors so when we had the demonstration several months ago we were able to lock all the doors um and um all the exterior doors in the matter of two seconds there's also one other thing to to keep in mind it's important that these systems stay upgraded correct because of the just for cyber security reasons as the devices get more sophisticated they become more secure in themselves so they don't end up getting hacked when certain vulnerabilities are discovered in components that are used to actually build these systems so staying current is a really important thing to do that's a great point gary so is is this i didn't realize and this is my own fault when we approved the doors which i know was a really significant expense yeah three million dollars yeah yeah um so because this is a newer technology is this also then going to be replaced in another all technology has a lifespan i think the one thing that um we'll make sure that we're on top of is that we can smooth this out so that it's not an all or nothing thing um we were the end of the impression that the two panels the ones that we currently have in these newer ones couldn't cohabitate on the same system um and that's not true they actually can so as we move forward we'll probably massage the cycle a little bit so it's not a hit all at once and that we can take care of some of the panels as we go um hopefully as you know i would like to say as technology improves the lifespan um gets longer but um i'm not sure that's a true statement i don't think quite and i think that's which will thank you two more sure three questions first is was this budget for yes second um is this going to be done this summer yes and then third how does this is this cost already baked into the new edition every time we do any kind of addition renovations it usually requires a new panel and we build that into the cost of every door having a door lock a panel so that's already paid for absolutely actually i have four questions then so there are still what's that there are still a number of doors that i've spotted recently that don't actually have the door locked can we so patty pierce and her team have identified the doors that don't require because i don't know where my ak so yeah but you don't need to go to any of the doors that don't have i know but i do think they'll take us on them we should just finish it off yes i think in some it makes sense um there i think still a couple that um really would only be germane to sodaxo and so i think the question is is the is the cost worth it yeah okay um but we're evaluating we'll get a report all right thank you that's it okay could you uh please pull the board certainly i will i where is it hi moon's eyes shang hi thank you voice for all right first hi no aye motion carries seven to nothing okay and then in may uh we will be recommending the district purchase a treasurer's bond for the position of district treasurer our very own mr sean carney [Laughter] in the past the bond has cost a thousand dollars per million uh more information will be coming up uh in the may mid meeting memo and board book and as usual sean don't you forget it that's we know where you live so um that will be coming up in may uh and then ihsa membership is in the consent agenda and the foia requests i read those fire requests they have not slowed no i know that what do these people want to do with this information sometimes it's sometimes they'll tell me they don't by law have to tell me usually it's often it's tied to uh a website that they're a part of and collecting data and sharing that data um transportation bid is just purely informational because they're in the industry they want to know what um what contracts are settling for that kind of stuff um but i would say often it's it's related to something that they're involved with whether it be a non-profit they're in that business and they're just curious what other people are doing but they do seem to be increasing more frequently okay can i have a motion to approve the consent agenda second any questions for eric on the consent agenda would you please pull the board of course all right wounds i shang hi weisberg all right frost no aye aye well hi carrie seven or nothing okay and that brings us to the information report just a couple quick items and then we're happy to hear about anything that you guys would like to talk about uh the first is that we are hoping um to have a very brief uh organizational meeting on tuesday may 10th at 7 30 um and normally we would do this at our may board meeting but um as we may have mentioned before the may board meeting is going to be a little bit hectic uh it's going to be in the west auditorium um whatever that may date is the 16th may 16th may 16th and we're going to be uh handing out passing out over a hundred ambassador awards so um come prepared with your hand sanitizer um it's gonna be a long night um but it should be really exciting we have i think four or five different groups at one state championships over 100 kids it's gonna be really cool um so it just might be a little bit clunky to do the reorganizational meeting at the beginning of that meeting so can we count on at least four people to be in person that day one two three four gary okay maybe all right so all right so at least four and anybody else can dial in uh virtually that would be great uh and then also just wanted to remind folks that uh graduation is on friday uh may 27th at the sears center this year only one ceremony um so very excited about that uh not two ceremonies uh and then prior to that that week on tuesday may 24th we won't have the athletes when you say two ceremonies well last year we had two ceremonies at the seer center remember please put the class in but what about the we do we also have let's do this uh if if we if we're fortunate enough to need one okay it depends that we don't know yet they got to win a state championship so okay or or compete yeah um but we would love to see as many of you uh who can be here on tuesday may 24th for our annual meeting to review administrative team members performance the meeting will begin at 5 30 in the district office and last to approximately 2 a.m [Music] i'm sorry did i say that i meant i bet it would just be a couple hours um and our annual um menu of yen yen's uh will be on the offering so hopefully you can make that as well and then we do have a um we do have a document there that has important dates for the spring and summer this year um these are events that you know all may none must some should attend uh particularly our retirement 25-year and ten year celebration on may 19th at the marriott lincolnshire we've been on a coveted pause for the past um couple of years we're starting to get the covid cobwebs out and the first opportunity to really celebrate uh together is going to be may 19th so we're looking forward to seeing as many of you there as you can and there's some other dates in there you're at all interested um you can come and participate in and then um june 6th sean is the uh foundation golf outing it is um and if any of you would like to play in that um you're more than welcome so yes let me know where did you say the next board meeting is going to be the next place may 10th yeah the 15-minute meeting is right here so where do you want to be that's going to be may 16th where is that going to be the west side of troy just me the patriot lobby patriot yeah all right that's all i have anybody else have any anybody been to meetings any committees they want to share terry the elc is still going strong the elc is still going strong they have a long-term release on what's known as the elc west which is the building next door which enhances our space for our transition students and the little factory that they're on making stationery and candles and it's given us more room and we have had inquiries from several other school districts could they send their transition students to us and there has to be a meeting with uh meegan and and the superintendents on what we're going to charge other districts to educate their transition students but it's becoming i want i don't want to say a profit center it isn't really a private center but it's becoming something that is is becoming well known in the community a thought of highly and certainly a need so i'm really proud that we're part of that that's great thank you eric this is faith um i have some news to share with everyone okay well as you know i work at aeon a professional service company that provides solutions to many institutional investors such as pension funds endowment foundations on global basis so as an internal promotion i'm recently appointed to be the head of wild solutions of aeon in china so i'll be responsible to grow eons business in wealth solutions in china and i'm very excited about this career opportunity thank you well however i'm very sad that i will not be able to serve on this board as this job requires me to relocate to shanghai china to serve on the board obviously i need to be a resident of the school district and so i i am scheduled to move to shanghai possibly in july around july or latest in august so to give the board some time for the transition and find the right uh replacement um i'm planning to resign from my board position in the coming weeks wow that is big news congratulations congratulations that's awesome uh well thank you it's it's good and bad and at this point i it's really mixed feeling i really wish i could have served the board much longer um but it's it's a wonderful career opportunity and it's really hard to bypass um so i thought i'd like to share this news with you as soon as possible and so to be fair to have enough time to find a replacement and then um i as i recollect the journey since i joined the board in august 2020 has been really it has really been an eventful and extraordinary journey and i have to say i'm really honored to have the opportunity to win the trust of many residents in the school district and serve on this board this board is really extraordinary to lead stevenson through the pandemic probably one of the most challenging times in its history i've personally participated and witnessed many critical decisions the board has made for the best interest of the majority of students i'm really happy to say we're happy to normal and celebrate students activities achievements and also hear the presentation of all the curriculum teams on each meetings and i'm really proud of this board i just want to thank this board as a school district resident and also as a fellow board member i also want to take this opportunity to thank the administrative team faculty and staff i know you all work very hard on daily basis to make students in a better school it's really a pity that i can't finish the term and push for further progress of many initiatives that that are critical in my view for students and the residents there's still much to be done to help guard students mental health to help students develop a more diversified view of the world through an enriched curriculum but i'm sure the rest of the board members and my successor will hold on to the core vision of the stevenson continues a great job and make all efforts for the success of every student so again thank you all for the opportunity working on the board i wish stevenson all the success and um hopefully uh i will see you next time before sometime in may awesome congratulations we wish you thank you eric we wish you all the best faith yeah yeah it's been too short a time but we've enjoyed your participation and contributions to the board and we'll talk more before you leave and faye just to be clear when mark and i come and visit um mark you would prefer like a like a view of you know like mark and i we will only be there for a few weeks really okay shanghai is beautiful i know thank you yeah i give you the best tour one of the most exciting cities in the world that's very cool well very happy for you thank you thank you we will miss you faye thank you harry okay hey faye can you hear me sure dave tell him though [Music] okay anything else uh can i hear should i share yeah um so i have similar news as face um i i don't know if i can follow that speech of hers but i want to echo everything she's saying um but i took up a a career opportunity about six months ago which is based in north carolina and um i've been working remote as the vp of finance global cfo for the wrangler jeans brand and i've been wearing a lot of wrangler i have a lot of jeans in my closet now but with return to office plans being announced starting next week i will be traveling there more often almost every week or every other week so we were planning on moving but the housing market is so crazy that we can't really find a house on time to build and actually buy one because things are selling on the same day above asking cash um so we've decided to um to do the travel thing for a year before we you know we can find a house while i'm still there and so on and so forth so excited about the opportunity obviously um you know sad to leave um we've been in this community for 10 years um and seen my kids you know one was three one was seven see them grow through the feeder districts and really become confident young adults teenagers with one going off to college in in a few months so it's it's definitely bittersweet a lot of friendships that you know we've developed my friends are very happy that we can't find a house and we you know for another year even though in transition um and uh definitely uh being on the board has been a very enriching experience i've learned from each of the board members who bring such diverse skill sets you know um diverse points of views and skill sets um and we've you know like faye said it's been it's been unusual everything steve said was not gonna happen happened of course he could not have predicted kermit so it was it was crazy times um but you know when when someone goes through difficult times like this board did with uh and the administrative team did and the students and the community that's when you can really tell what the strength of um you know you can really see the strength of the community and the board and how um how people come through those difficulties with flying colors and i feel like the board the administration the teachers the students um the community everyone you know in spite of having diverse points of views everyone came together for the best of the school and the students um for you know to keep our vision alive of success for every student so i think that's that's what's most important and it's been so nice to see today people come start getting these awards again uh having all these meetings in person so it will definitely be bittersweet and in a few weeks you know i'll probably attend my resignation as well because i don't think i can do the travel um on a weekly bi-weekly basis and do justice to what you know the time that i need to devote on the board so so that's a little bit of announcement from me congratulations thank you and thank you as well and as i told faye we miss you we appreciate the contributions that you've made and uh wish you the best because obviously this is a great opportunity and hina mark and i would prefer hey no i'm just kidding i'll take the couch you'll take the couch this time all right we'll come and visit we'll come in something on the outer banks you know that would be great well it's certainly our loss but i wish you both all the best it's been amazing to get to know you you're amazing women and you've brought a lot to stevenson to this board to the community and um i hope that we will all stay in touch [Music] oh wow okay um i hope that's it reservations yeah can i have a motion to adjourn please so moved second all in favor hi okay

i believe you only have second yeah i think all of these are for the second reception of visitors anybody for the first reception all right okay hearing none we'll move on to the third third quarter financial report all right uh i'm i'm pitching in for our finance team tonight uh so the board received all the information about these third quarter financial report uh we're on pace for what we talked about at the beginning of the year which was running a deficit because we're paying off some significant bonds at the end uh over the course of this year um so you see that reflected in the overall bottom line on this slide but it's on pace for what we talked about back in august uh in revenues uh we're pretty much on pace for what we expected outside of food service which we talked about i think a couple board meetings ago um we're outpacing our projections by quite a bit um and yeah 5 800 uh yeah which of course is inflated you know as a result of first the pandemic the numbers that we had last year not knowing how we were going to rebound and then with the changes that we made in the food service this year uh you can see we're on our on pace for over one half million dollars in revenue related to food service and i know jenny that's many reloads of your student's id card thank you for your support yes thank you for yeah thank you for your support yeah expenditures uh were on pace very similar to last year outpacing it a little bit but you know this school year is much different than last school year but this is trending as what we would expect at this time of the year so that's the report it's an action item later on this evening i'll do my best to answer any questions that you may have if you have any looks like none all right moving on resolution on the 2021 tax rates uh those tax rates we bring you a projected amount and they're approved tentatively uh by the board in december so this document provides the overview of the changes that occur between the projected and the actual that were issued to us last week really the the big numbers that we take away from this right is that uh the tax cap rate is 1.4 percent you see that the top in green new construction is two percent a large portion of that new construction is bolstered by the downers grove tiff that rolled off and came on board this year that total new tax revenue is 3.4 percent we commonly refer that to as the revenue stream at this table uh the levy approved in december um was .0225 more than what we actually had come through so what i take away from that is that mark injury did a really good job of projecting what it should be that's probably a pretty good margin of error um [Music] so the tax rate overall because of our rising eav the tax rate will decrease to 1.8751 which is a decrease of 0.0073 which helps us continue our current trend i would imagine we will be right around 20 out of 856 school districts in the state of lowest tax rate so we we do pretty well amazingly well for our tax rate so value for your dollar in downers grove remains strong other items of note in mark's report as part of the setting of the tax rates is the rex nord abatement that uh the amount that we abate decreases year after year so the amount that we're abating this year is about 37 000 uh as a result of that that change we also have a change that allows us to recapture uh some funds from property tax objections so that will be an additional 162 000 that we receive this year as a result of that change at the state level this is an action item this evening do my best to answer any questions that you might have all right moving up districts auditor services as the board is aware we have a current contract with miller cooper that was a five-year contract however within that contract we come back and set the rate each year the recommended rate which is an action item this evening is set at forty thousand five hundred dollars this is the group that does our audit brings us the annual comprehensive report in december january of each year and then does all the auditing of the district so this is an action item this evening that we recommend approves questions all right oh look at that just says what i just told you all right uh support staff contra association contract uh as i informed the board uh earlier today this was ratified by the support staff association this afternoon it was presented to the board last week in closed session provided an overview and discussion with board members as well as the draft contract language is in the board packet was provided to the board as well over the last week i've received no additional questions from board members however i'd entertain any if they exist at this time quick one um how just more of a curiosity question how did um or at all did the pandemic experience of the pandemic affect this contract negotiation is there any anything in some subsequence i i think that um yeah i would say of most substance is the fact that we entered into an interest-based bargaining arrangement with support staff this time went through the training and went through that i think a lot of that was just built on the trust that existed between the groups throughout the pandemic you know there's been a lot of communication a lot of working through ever-changing guidelines and the way that things should work there was great interest of support staff following the same kind of model that we used with the teachers pre pandemic so that really led into the process i think the outcome is more driven by inflation by challenges in the job market related to the pandemic and those kinds of things where you see this one-time adjustment in salaries especially amongst a couple of groups to bring us more in line with market so that we can try to attract and retain some employees in positions that we've had a challenge in doing so over the over the last year and in some ways even years before that so really it's more of the post if we're in the post pandemic period that is causing you know some of the changes that we felt we really had to make in compensation in this model most notably increases in insurance benefits as uh the research out there shows that that is one of the key pieces for attracting and retaining employees right now it seemed like a quick review of the documents it was kind of a win-win situation space sets out to do right yeah so at the beginning we set out both sides agreed to what the goals of negotiations were and at the end we were able to achieve in some creative way all of those goals as outcomes we definitely value our support staff so absolutely i'm glad that we got the win win so this is up as an action item later on this evening as well freedom of information requests we continue to receive them fill them and they are posted up on our website if you search for foia you can see this recently fulfilled foia requests which provides you a report on all of them okay moving on to consent agenda is there anything any member of the board wishes to extract for further discussion going on i'd just like to point out and thank gina zaccardi for serving on the dupage area occupational education system board of directors thank you so much so we need a motion for the board of education to approve the consent agenda as presented which includes the personnel report appointments certified changes of position classified appointments classified personnel report resignation certified retirements classified resignations classified financial pages the district auditor services and the resolution of appointment to dupage area occupational education system board of directors which is so moved second mike and terry thank you very much mike davenport aye terry pavich aye joanna vazquez drexler aye christopher espinoza aye shirelle fuller hi jenny hagstrom aye and nancy kupka aye the content consent agenda carries next we'll move on to the action items the first we need a motion for the board of education to approve the agreement between the support staff association and the board of education district 99 from july 1st 2022 through june 20th but just a perspective last year was very difficult year for two years for athletics as far as fundraising money coming in and gay receipts just because of the restrictions last winter so in 20 20 21 winter we we only brought in about what's that 55 56 000 in total and as you can see our we're kind of back to normal this year where we raised almost that much in gate receipts alone so gay receipts made up fifty thousand dollars uh fundraising and fees that's all the fundraising the winner programs do as far in all the fees that they collect for gear and team needs was it 86 000 concessions we was 23 000 ihsa we get money back for profit sharing and as we make it through the state tournament from them just to help some of the costs obviously fifteen hundred dollars doesn't pay for a whole lot when we're traveling and staying overnight but it anything's welcome so this year's income and this winter was a 100 164 320 and 66 cents on the next page i highlight our expenses um in total we made up for a lot for two years we kind of put a lot of things on pause and we just had to take care of some of that equipment now that we had our funds coming back in and everything picking back up so our expense is a little higher than normal so we in total we spent 186 333 and 14 cents this winter game workers and security 14 000 officials almost 18 000 golf course rental i know it's kind of weird to be in the winter board report but they like us to pay our fee in january one when they are shut down so we pay six thousand dollars every the first of january every year to cover for our spring and fall seasons for our golf teams chris where is that located palmyra golf course equipment and team gear 90 000.

the video presents the marxist concept of intersectionality through the use of two teenagers indoctrinating two elementary school students to the concept rather than have a serious discussion or debate on the matter the video rolls into a series of tired racial and ethnic tropes that pander the worst stereotypes of the past in typical critical race theory manner the video stereotypically presents two children of color jerry and fatima is coming from marginalized groups while presenting a white child greta as growing up with the wind at her back this unserious presentation allows for no room to discuss poor white people in this country nor is there any effort to illustrate successful muslims or hispanics i wonder where the muslim neurosurgeon who removed my brain tumor in 2006 and saved my life falls in this discussion i guess nowhere because he does not fit the narrative the video then rolls into a series of cringe-worthy declarative statements by students and staff indicating their ethnic background and what they are not a mexican-american young man declares he does not like tacos a young muslim woman declares she's not a terrorist and a teacher that he is not a member of the mafia this is a waste of time and a waste of taxpayer dollars on a more critical and more critical race theory indoctrination so in the spirit of this video i thought it'd be appropriate for me to make some declarative statements i am native american specifically i'm of the ojibwe nation i'm from a place called and i am not a drunk i am an ojibwe man but i am not a victim and i'm an ojibwe man and i have no patience for liberal white racial pandering thank you our next speaker is laura hoist good evening my name is laura hoyce i'd like to address transgender training in sophomore downers grove north health class last week on april 12th teachers at downers grove now north presented the gender unicorn to 10th grade students this gender identity gender expression training was handed out and collected at the end of class in other words the trans student educational resource was carefully guarded for secrecy students aren't allowed to take these papers home district 99 does not want parents to know what teachers are telling their sons or daughters that there are other genders besides female girl and male boy that there are expressions other than feminine or masculine that sex assigned at birth includes not just female or male i'm sorry but also other inter or intersex according to the epic times april 13 and 19 opinion article the biden administration policies are pushing puberty blocking transition surgeries for transgender children the federal government will force taxpayers to pay for medical interventions such as puberty blockers hormone therapy and gender affirming surgeries this is nonsense this is evil it's marx's teaching that's intended to destroy our families it's grounded in communism urging students to follow the government and ignore your parents do you folks know about this do you approve of gender influencing and sex grooming at donnerfield north and south i'm speaking of what occurred at downers grove north last tuesday i don't know what's happening itself does district 99 engage in telling girls they can become boys without telling their parents should our schools be teaching students that they may be attracted to the same or other genders should teachers tell them it's okay to be emotionally attracted to the trans craze to become popular if you want to know more go to transstudent.org gender there you will find the transgender unicorn sheet shown in all colors and languages there you will learn that for transgender people sex assigned at birth and their own internal sense of gender identity are not the same superintendent thiele and district 99 board members and participating teachers stop corrupting our kids stop grooming our kids for kinky sex stop forcing students to fulfill your political agenda restore quality education at downers group now south and downer stroke north thank you ms hoyce if you are aware of a teacher that is actually grooming a student in the proper term of grooming please share that with us we don't take the term grooming lightly in the school district we don't take that as a term that you just throw around lightly so if you are aware of a staff member that is actually under the technical term grooming a student i ask you to seriously bring that forward to me in confidence thank you next speaker is i can't make out the first name i think it's briner thank you ed again my name is ed brainer lifelong resident of donors grove graduate of downers community high school in 1962.

training room and weight room four hundred eleven and ninety nine cents um miscellaneous that's awards certificates we had to we ran out of a bunch because we had an order in a couple years and so we just had to reorder a bunch of our certificates and the lcs that they get on the letterman's jacket and like everything else costs went up so so did the bill and then concessions just expenses of that were about 15 000 results for the boys our boys basketball team lost in the sectional championship game that we hosted this year boys swimming finished second in the dac they were the sectional champions knocking off munster i think they had won 28 years in a row or something like that so we had multiple individuals and relays make it to the state finals and which was highlighted by zac ramache and diving who finished fourth in the state of indiana boys wrestling finished second and sectionals and 30 regionals we had three individuals qualify for the state finals um that's a two-day event they go down friday they wrestle hoping to qualify for saturday and again highlighted by johnny cortez who finished fourth in the state in his weight class girls basketball i'm sure you read about them in the paper they had a very tremendous year this year they finished second in dac behind crown point they won the sectional championships and lost in regional championship game to crown point as well girls swimming finished second in the dac and again had many individuals and relays qualify for the state finals and they ended on the first day girls gymnastics we finished fourth at the ihsa state meet for the third year in a row so um three or four four years ago we finished third and we finished fourth the last three years haley delgado placed sixth on the uneven bars and chloe amanda titus placed third on the floor cheer they won nationals in the non-building division dance won their 27th consecutive state championship and were announced the nba grand national champions when they went to florida congratulations to them in the last page dr malcolm had asked for a list of our signees this is the current list as of today of what coaches have given us and there may be some others that are out there that coaches haven't told us but that's the list of who signed for our sports that we're aware of it as of right now ask some questions so mr uh in your just some questions um do i thought we did away with the corporation transportation fee no i see it's on here so okay i'm wrong on that and um so with the um gymnastic girls that placed at state what you mean by that is that team goes as a that's a team ranking and not enough so the team plays fourth at state the team so our team qualified for the state finals and then but you also perform as an individual and you based on your individual performance you also garner awards as an individual okay and um this is very nice that you provided this i i had no idea there were all these students that have received scholarships do you expect there will be more that will be coming in or how does that recruiting go there's always late signees that that happened throughout we have a couple that that are on that list that we haven't recognized at school that just signed in the last couple weeks so okay and can you tell me the difference between um because i read it in the paper and i don't understand it if somebody's committed to a university does that mean that they've signed the papers and everything or what's what's that term being committed i don't know it depends how the newspaper is referring to that term committed can be a verbal commitment where where you haven't signed a national letter of intent usually when you use the word commit it means that they've verbaled and given a oral agreement that they would attend that school but have not signed whether they're you can't do that until after your junior year it's concluded you can't sign a national letter until you're going into your senior year for any support okay so so that would explain why the gal from crown point changed her commitment and moved it to butler from wherever she was well no that's because her coach left and when a coach leaves the university after you've signed a national letter from ted you can move to another school oh right oh okay okay so chris there's a lot of scenarios out there i see on here there's a familiar name yeah your son congratulations excellent choice wabash college he's pretty excited that is very good and at one point in time we had athletic boosters that came and presented a check to uh to to the department really but they came to a school board meeting and did that do you remember yeah we do the support the tribe event every year by the booster club which was done on good friday and they usually don't come until after they've closed their books which is usually in june or july when they've when they've gotten every all their bills paid and know how much of a check they're going to write all right i just want to make sure we recognize them for all their hard work so that'll be happening in the summer when they're ready got it okay thank you you're welcome thanks chris thank you mr nerd thank you i also am asking for approval for the lc athletic summer camps that were in your packet move to peru we have a motion by mr marshall second second by mrs kelly any discussion hearing none all in favor aye aye motion passes thank you very much and we'll move on to our director of primary education dr bracey good evening i don't have any little people with me today but i am coming before you seeking approval for the professional leads you have in front of you move to approve the professional leave requests we have a motion by dr medlin second second by mr marshall any discussion all in favor aye aye aye motion passes thank you thank you thank you went to director of secondary education mrs castaneda good evening for my first item i am seeking your approval for the professional leave requests motion to approve a motion by mrs kelly second second by dr medlin any discussion in favor aye okay motion passes thank you and for my next item i am seeking your approval for the field trip requests motion to approve we have a motion by mrs kelly second second by mr marshall any discussion all in favor aye aye motion passes thank you our director of student services mrs gramala my only item is to seek your approval for the professional leave requests that were included in the board packet so moved motion by mr marshall and i will second that any discussion all in favor aye aye motion passes thank you director of facilities mr legend thank you mr seuss um tonight i have two items on my agenda the first one is to seek your approval toward and execute the circular mechanical contract for the hvac renovation project at grimmer middle school on march 29th we we accepted bids for this project we've been designing it since early fall we had five bidders which we're very excited for in this environment and the uh below responsible bidder was circle our mechanical uh with a base bid of three million one hundred ten thousand four hundred fifty dollars um we also want to take alternate 1b for the controls for automated logic that'd be 735 390 dollars also would be alternate 2b would be the carrier haus for 264 five thousand and alternate 3a the tempsec vuvs for 139 300 and then alternate four we're going to do some sealing and lighting renovation in the kitchen area for a total bid package award of four million three hundred nine thousand five hundred seventy five dollars uh we broke this out in the alternates because the environment we're in we're trying to get the best price for equipment as well as the price as well as lead times so that's where we kind of broke out some of this equipment for our alternates and again if you remember this is coming from the ursa money from the federal government so that's how this project's being funded as well any questions do we have a motion motion to approve a motion by mrs kelly second second by dr medlin any discussion or questions hearing none all in favor aye aye aye motion passes thank you my last item is just at your stations tonight i put um besides the grammar renovation project as well as the bevich expansion project we also have a long list of summer projects that we're going to try to tackle this summer as we always do so that's at your stations if you have any questions um please feel free to reach out and i'll update you throughout the summer like we do every summer so if there's any questions i'll have to take them now thank you nope no questions i'm just glad to see the parameter defense post being taken care of at the southbound baseball field so thank you director of business services mr james all right thank you um okay so we're in the ongoing steps for the financing for the vivid expansion project and so the next step is to have a public hearing on the extension of the lease as we've talked about a couple times we'll get the building corporation involved which we did this morning and the school corporation will sell a portion of the building to the building corporation and then we'll lease that back over the 20 years of the terms of the bond so the next step again is to have a public hearing or anyone in the public can make a comment about the expansion project and the extension of the lease that we already have in place so at this time i'd open it up to the floor in case anyone has any comments hearing none that concludes the public hearing okay so with that being said uh the first resolution is to seek your approval on the um a fifth amendment to the lease and um as executed as part of what's in your board packet so i seek your approval move to approve we have a motion by mr marshall second second by dr meddling any discussion questions hearing none all in favor aye aye motion passes thank you on the second resolution reapproves the building corporation approves the issuance of bonds and approves the transaction documents we have continuing disclosure things that will be required to report to the feds of the rating agencies through the life of the bonds and so this approves all those procedures so i seek your approval on that motion to approve a motion by mrs kelly mr marshall second any discussion hearing none all in favor aye aye motion passes thank you next i seek your approval for our application to the state's common school loan program we do this twice a year this is what we use these dollars to replace and update the technology in our buildings including smart smart boards chromebooks ipads desktop computers so seek your approval for that application accept the director's recommendation we have a motion by mr marshall second second by ms kelly any discussion questions all in favor aye aye motion passes thank you next i seek your approval for the professional leave requests in your packet which is for myself and our corporation treasurer kathy ramba to attend the indiana asbo annual meeting in french look the first week of may so moved i have a motion by dr malcolm i will second that any discussion all in favor motion passes okay i seek your approval for the donations that were in your board packet we have a motion by mr marshall second second by dr medlin any discussion all in favor aye aye motion passes thank you okay my last item is just to give the board a quarterly update on our financials we have subsequently concluded the march end of march which is the third quarter of the fiscal year so you have two spreadsheets in front of you the first one i want to talk about is the one in the top left corner says education fund and this is where we pay for everything that is education related specifically our classroom teachers where we have direct action with students and so you'll see going across the top row that these are actual receipts and expenditures from july through march with the last three months being estimated um just a couple things to bring your attention of course everyone likes to jump to the bottom right hand corner to see how we've operated plus or minus and as of right now we're about 150 000 to the good so we are happy with that just a couple areas of note there toward the top in the middle uh we talk about our cash balance of this fund and what percentage of our expenditures is that and we're hovering right around 11 ranges whereas right where we want to be we want to be in that 10 to 15 percent is the prudent range this money comes in every month from the state like clockwork so we don't have as much risk it's not tied to taxes and cash flows so we're right where we want to be there on the top right toward the top right you'll see our transfer amount that we do from the education fund to the operations fund every month this is because back in 2019 expenditures moved out of the old general fund to ops state law says they don't want you to transfer more than 15 percent of your revenue we don't flirt with that at all we're about seven and a half percent so we're trying to keep as many dollars here in this education fund and we use those dollars uh to put money into aids and teachers and so forth so before i move on to the next page um i mean i'm not going to go over all the details here but you can see that we are running well and any questions on this okay the next page is takes the our education fund our operations fund and our operating referendum fund and throws it all in together into one because really these funds are all now intertwined where they used to be their own buckets well that was one big happy uh play sand and so we really want to look at how we're doing here because there's so much interaction between the funds and again the the dollar amounts are higher because we're talking about four funds here and again if we go to the bottom right hand corner this year our plus minus we're looking to project around you know 775 thousand dollars to almost i wouldn't say the bad but expenditures more than revenue however you know i just want to show that we do between these funds we have a cash balance of over 25 million dollars and we don't want that amount to get high we take pride of spending the dollars we're getting from the state and from our taxpayers and pushing that into into our classrooms and our staff so we planned on having expenditures more than our revenue to help bring some of that balance down additionally if you haven't heard there's a little thing called inflation going on where our expenditures that we had projected last summer for this fiscal year have dramatically increased being on the utility side projects that bill's doing even just regular classroom supplies everything has gone up seven eight percent so um the fact that we're still relatively close we still have three more months hopefully that month that that number may come down a little bit but it is not to a point where um we feel like we're in any financial crisis or mode here so um going good here so i just would offer up to any questions that you may have at this time or later after diving into it yeah mr james something just came to my mind and i haven't followed it and i should but what type of increase has inflation increase has there been in propane do you know not much it's still cheaper than gasoline regular gasoline and diesel so it's fluid just like those things are but it is still a cheaper cost than those fuel sources so it's been very pretty good for us about half we're almost at half of our fleet being propane buses at this point and actually i was in indianapolis with a little group of other cfos from across the state we get together periodically and we did a whole morning talking about propane buses how some districts have gone this route and just the maintenance costs alone is less let alone the fuel itself has been less as well so um we probably won't be buying we still buy a few gasoline buses because the propane can only go so far their tanks are smaller so for those longer trips we're always going to need some regular gas so to speak however we are transitioning away from diesel because they're just really hard on the mechanics and so forth where up until the last few years you couldn't your buses were all diesel or now these alternative fuels now they've started to make available quote unquote regular gas for buses so we're also going down that road so we don't have the additional cost with on the diesel side so we're happy with them drivers like them mechanics like them easy to start in the winter so yeah we're really happy so then the volatility has been there in the propane gas crisis but not as extreme as yeah that's that's correct yeah okay thank you thank you thank you for the spreadsheet and keeping it all together for us are there any there are no public comments this evening so with that we'll move on to our board comments in consideration of future agenda items mr marshall i just have one very short comment here for the board's consideration since it was just placed in front of us maybe not all of you have had the opportunity to read the letter from our former graduate and phd from halbert oklahoma i just wondered how that particular letter may be addressed and who's going to do the addressing are we just going to shun it aside at the appropriate time you can get back to me thank you this is kelly i'd just like to congratulate mr clark on his retirement and all of his service to the school thank you very much okay thank you dr madeline no comments this evening thanks dr malcolm so this letter is addressed to the editor-in-chief of the comment correct right i haven't been able to read it janice i would appreciate uh no discussion on it at this point until everybody's had an opportunity to read it no i'm just asking you is that what your shows is we each have a copy for our perusal i'm sure okay it's an issue from my perspective that is never going to go away um and i think we should address it appropriately okay all right i'm gonna say something for the benefit of our listeners at home this is a letter someone requesting us to change our school nickname from the indians and we've visited this topic in the past several times and i won't go on this evening but i think it's important for people at home to know what the letter is about so that's what it's referencing thank you thank you so that was going to be my next question then this was brought to us you brought this to us from the um editor-in-chief of the comment then the letter was sent to the editor-in-chief of the comment and then you brought it to us right larry he didn't bring it to us no that gentleman uh sent copies for each board member oh oh but the letter is addressed to our publications people not the board got it okay thank you i appreciate that clarity um i wanted to first of all mention that lake central high school hosted the isma state music association large organization choir and banned competitions on april 8th and 9th that was a friday into saturday night it was so smooth i i was able to come and attend and hear a lot of the bands perform including our own band and we had so many positive comments because it was so well organized and a lot of that is because of the excellent facility we have but um i wanted to share that on behalf of those individuals who put together all the hosting terri miuccia wanted to thank you for staying with the pictures on the display board out there they're so nice to look at it's so much more effective than that blank board that was there before and school board members i think that you're going to a regional meeting wednesday night at tables with isba and i just realized that wednesday night is the high school band spring concert so if i'm in town i may be at the spring concert and not at the banquet with you at t-bell so if somebody would pick up a brochure for me at the meeting that would be great sure okay thank you that's all and i have nothing this evening so we'll move on to uh dr rocco board calendar of future activities thank you our next meeting is may the 2nd and i just want to call everybody's attention to may the 16th our second meeting in may we will recognize our teacher of the year and our retirees dr brock do you know if they're going to do the um art display this year in may could you find out for us so uh it's usually done before a school board meeting isn't it uh it has sometimes yeah okay okay all right do we have a motion for our adjournment i have a motion by dr malcolm all in favor

it was a time fortunately when the high school focused on math science and history versus what i'm afraid they focus more on critical race theory pornography and sexual orientation now but i digress you might recall in september of 2021 the national school boards association sent a letter to president biden requesting that he direct federal law enforcement to investigate parents as domestic terrorists on october 4th the u.s department of justice under merrick garland directed the fbi and u.s attorney's office to investigate parents for harassment intimidation threats of violence against school board members and school employees because of that 13 states including illinois have withdrawn membership of the national school boards association and many more have distanced themselves from the same district 99 has paid the national school boards association four thousand hundred and sixty-five dollars annually now that illinois has left the school boards association will district 99 withdraw and cancel any further payments to the national school boards association hank we asked you this back in the fall when this came about and you had indicated that as the year progressed you would make a decision whether you will continue in the national association so i ask you again if this has been the case if you withdrawn mr browner if you'd like to reach outside if you'd like to reach out to me outside of this meeting i'd be happy to answer your question however this is the reception of visitors and this isn't a time for dialogue very good and at that time i would like to know what you get for that four thousand dollars thank you feel free to email me okay let's move on to communications and announcements jenny anything on uh lund i don't have anything this week it'll be uh next week do i am assassin uh education foundation we're meeting uh wednesday so chris anything on isbs nothing exciting okay upcoming board meetings on may 2nd we'll have a workshop meeting at 6 30 pm here in the asc on may 16th we'll have our regular business meeting at 6 30 again at the asc uh we have no close session so we just need a motion to adjourn so move second uh that would be um terry and chris all those in favor aye aye all those opposed your adjourned thank you everybody have a good evening thank you
