together this is so great so this is brooklyn and britain wells and mrs clark nominated britain and she states that britain is a very kind compassionate and sweet student she thinks of people first and is always quick to make sure someone knows instructions or has a friend to play with on the playground as you can tell our theme has been kindness mrs crone nominated brooklyn mrs crone shares that brooklyn works very hard every day even though brooklyn has come across some challenges at school she has found a way to push through and this was my favorite part mrs crone said it has been a delight to watch brooklyn have those light bulb moments which every educator strives for and recognize that in herself both students are such a delight to have at red path so britain and brooklyn wells we have a backdrop set up for photos with our students of the month all right tonight we have meyla marlow and mrs hill is her teacher she nominated mayla and mayla is a very sweet and caring little girl she's a hard worker and an excellent role model for her class mayla loves helping others and takes the initiative to find others in need and always lends a helping hand so she is our student of the month at dear meadow [Applause] um now if you can't tell this is the model he is all dead down his purple already this morning or this afternoon this morning wow it's been one of those days so i would like to introduce enrique cerna enrique is a fourth grader in miss lewis's class at tz and she has written about enrique enrique is a student that always comes into school with a positive attitude and a smile he has been working very hard this year on his academics and striving to get better every day enrique is a friend to everyone and you can count on him to always make a good decision i second that it's easy to say that enrique makes our class better every day that he is in it congratulations [Applause] [Music] okay our student of the month for the middle school today trait in math class no matter how difficult the material got no matter how challenging the homework was jillian always stood out by putting forth her best effort every single day he also wanted to mention that only not only did julian put forth an awesome level of effort every day but she was also willing to do it with a cheerful attitude never complaining or griping he knows that jillian will continue to be successful in whatever she puts her mind to in the future because of this deeply ingrained perseverance and it is that reason that he was pleased to nominate her for the character trait perseverance [Applause] okay thank you um next item on the agenda is the approval of the consent agenda which consists of the meeting minutes from march 14th of special meeting and march 28th the i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all okay we're going to start tonight's meeting with a moment of silence we've lost a long time uh teacher at uh northfield uh ross trump um i kind of have an affinity for ross because i was his last student teacher so you know how many years ago that was when he retired i also i've been asked to do a moment of silence for us but i also want to remember how this remember his wife who passed away 20 days later because we all know in the teaching profession that the spouse is just as committed to the school district as the actual teacher so i'd like to have a moment of silence for both awesome future board meetings april 26 6 pm here may 10th and may 24th 6 p.m here that would be a question of the school year by that time we have some minor revisions to the agenda we've added to public recognition and we've had a couple under employment it's under the hr so we'll get right to the public recognition and recognition we have a recommendation to approve a 1200 donation from an anonymous donor for northfield high school robotics we have a recommendation to improve the donation from cotiva agriscience msc for southwood ffa and a recommendation to approve the 250 donation from the tiffany comfort in honor of clint coogler's participation in a weekend long event athletic event for summer school for mines in motion i mean with the acceptance motion and second to approve the donations all in favor saying all right can we approve the list oh yes we um we name all the lists there i thought she had did she pretty much it was on our agenda anything it's a lot which you know was such a pleasant surprise for me this afternoon to see so many people involved in gifting to allow the students to attend the world's own texas yes yeah because of that if you'll bear with me i'm going to read every name because i think it's important that every even if it was a dollar that they donated that we recognize their effort to help send our kids to worlds i miss that can you what can you explain what it's for yes um the people that i'm going to be reading are to send the sharp creek robotics program to the nationals the worlds i guess is what they call it not just nationals because people from other countries will be there it's a trip in texas and we'll be approving assuming that we approve the recommendation to allow them to go i'm going to go ahead and make that a safe assumption but there are a lot of people who donated money to make that trip possible and those people are and i'm going to give them this should i give them ones oh no okay those people are steve brubacher tiffany harper and ryan harrington goodfellas pizza family optometry zoomers andrew dixon lelands beacon moore family curly hodson martin family erected tool mckillip seed overlands an anonymous gift kim and kurt brentsman steve brubaker's on here twice he listened to it twice so we just forgot that we put him on the list thresh farms edgar smith dem elliott wabash chrysler dodge jim clymer anonymous for board jennifer and albert enriquez go wabash county julie hawkins and robert hawkins geneva baker billy halpert livestock enterprises mark genon ryan and michelle hawker denim law roxanne harper jerry mclean betty mclean wabash welding blair and deborah tiffany john and jamie phillips of all thomas ryan and tammy viverka margaret and john saul brad metzger todd and katie hunter prior to the retired rosemary and bob brenson john deere ttg lynynn harmon and kelly atlas building services stan cathy leland urbana yolk parish rachel guyer dennis and judy mckiller david and loretta summer lindsey culver midwest i steve and vicky furness the schlemmer farms walter and shelly conley dean and cassandra davenport hartlin remc union tool corporation holly chiropractic eagles lodge 549 and keith and kerry gillenwater that is the listener wow thank you we would like to definitely say thank you to all those people because it takes a lot of money and a lot of money to send a team like that with all their equipment to talk to texas thank you and the vote we did vote on that so that was approved for the recognition for the the approval of the other donations so we will move on to school recognition okay we have several here again i actually have one because typically it's all by school and so this is a school one but yes it was an email that i received and i thought it was uh worthy enough to share so ava barefoot is from the walters county historical museum and actually mr drake is on on that board and so she's uh she's a newer employee correct um so she said the following said i wanted to share a bit of positivity with you regarding field trips we had this week with south of the fourth graders and metro north kindergarteners between the two grades we had 120 students visit us in one day and we were very impressed with not only the students but with their teachers as well the students were respectful and engaged and their teachers were extremely helpful as we worked through the program we were visited by the classes of jim cox cammie ross angie herring matt vinnie and stephanie andrews they made the field trips run smoothly and efficiently and our staff is sincerely thankful we were visited by the classes of that's all said um so anyway um it's always great to hear the positivity of uh when we have kids that go out and the teachers going out um because sometimes when they have a little bit more free reign sometimes that doesn't always happen but yeah our teachers and i know i replied back to her just to say it's great that we have our teachers prepared they prepare the students for those field trips to be respectful and that is our expectation and we're glad that they're following through with that um mrs martin or mrs moore at metro north elementary recently received notification from the ido that they are recognized as the newly designated family friendly school the family friendly schools designation focuses on addressing academic physical emotional and social needs of the students while providing the needed resources and fostering the active involvement of their families through schools and the community the program recognizes and honors schools that welcome all families into the school community communicate effectively support student success speak up for every child share power and collaborative and collaborative uh with the community and so we know we've had other schools that have had that designation and there's not a lot in the state of indiana but that was one of their goals this year to be able to become a family-friendly school and be designated we know that all of our schools are family friendly but to get the designation there's some work to that to apply and different things like that also mrs moore congratulations to our little norse preschool team for once again achieving the past equality level three rating preschool programs are recognized at level three for demonstrating the knowledge and skill necessary for planning that appropriate activities and opportunities that lead children towards school readiness annotation level three programs make significant investment in the professional development of staff and they incorporate family and staff putting into their program and she has one more our metro north students recently participated in jury ex exhibition of student art competition and kaden kelly second grader at metro north was named this streeter hadley matthews grand award winner please don't ask me to say that again on sunday may 1st cayden will receive recognition for this accomplishment during an awards ceremony at the indiana landmark center in indianapolis so congratulations to cayden and then on to uh mr mcdaniel at southwood would like to recognize the 2020 southwest graduate daniel cornett for his work at manchester university danielle is a music education major and recently wrote a moving musical piece inspired by that conflict in ukraine daniel was even featured recently by indiana's news center for his work way to go daniel we are proud of you i don't know if you saw that or not it was on channel 15 they had it was on it was on the news it was also on their facebook page and things like that and it was very very interesting he actually was uh part of my superintendent advisory team like i said he graduated 2020 um very musically talented wants to become a music director band director and he said by the time he finishes high school he would like to be in college that he would be able to play every instrument and uh he said orchestra or surveillance so it was neat i think he did an excellent job in the interview and uh it's very good so if you ever get on facebook all right um continuing on mr snyder norfolk congratulates maya hunter for her poem neglect which won first place in vincennes university's writing contest the poem and another by my entitled 2016 will be published in the 2021-2022 edition of autumn voices we have a lot of town students and then mr martin at heart creek elementary a big thank you to our shark creek reading committee for organizing a recent reading incentive based march madness event this event or this fun and exciting time was enjoyed by all we also want to express our appreciation to the norfolk high school cheerleaders and basketball players for their participation so that was really a neat thing that they did that went along with march madness but doing reading incentives because obviously the games were a little bit different and some people were upset about that let's see some people in august who are upset about those games um and also around the board and finally the last one thank you to steve brubaker for taking the lead on shark creek elementary's hosting of today's math bowl competition at honeywell this is the multi-school event and takes significant time and effort to coordinate and run we are appreciative of mr brubaker and his crew of helpers for their great work on behalf of students a lot of great things happening again at msd of walrus county thank you we'll move on to public comment for agenda items only i don't know all items later give you guys an opportunity to speak if you want and yeah because of the reception of the order right yeah okay oh yeah we will yeah yeah that's what we put in the top of it that's right i forgot about that okay so moving on to consent agenda items approval of the minutes from our last meeting on march 22nd 2020.

agents and do that at the beginning of our regular meeting okay so i will go ahead and begin that's okay so we do have some guests um first of all i want to thank uh aaron oh okay we're doing this uh a live stream so i'm going to make sure it was on so again thank you president daisy thanks to eric long um who was on the screen with us today virtually and also jane hernan from ice miller to assist us as we continue to progress through the our strategic plan number four and just as um just as a reminder briefly number four's priority is facilities and technology to provide a safe and efficient learning environment and the measurable objective that we've been dealing and talking about is affordable 4.1 which is optimized utilization to determine feasibility of current facilities or other possibilities so there's two aspects of tonight's work session first one is during the september 28 work session and then the school board meeting the board approved the recommendation to approve the resolution authorizing appraisals of real estate that process is complete so tonight i will ask that you approve the resolution authorizing negotiation and execution of the purchase agreement of course that will be later on in the regular meeting if you approve this tonight we will make sure that the execution of the purchase agreement does not automatically mean the purchase of real estate because there are other steps that need to be taken before that can happen and so part of this work session is just the question if you have any questions on that of course we'll talk about it more in the regular school board meeting but if you have any questions you can ask those now or you can wait until next time because we do have our guests but it looks like i don't know where they went so so you guys probably can hear us but you were kicked off on the airplane i don't know why so that's not good because then we can't hear you there they are right back yep so i think unless you have any questions i will go on so we can have them our main event so they can hear us that's all right just making sure that we've had that little technical business calling yeah yes so we're good all right all right okay so the second part of this work session is really our main event i guess and our guest so we appreciate them again so just remind the number uh the studies of facility efficiencies that we talked about back in september 28th and i know that's been uh several months ago and also shared with all of our different staffs the three different facility of efficiency that we've been discussing is retain all schools shuffling grade levels and and or build a new high school and so eric and jane at this time though will now share their expertise because they are the experts concerning the controlled project process and this process this presentation though can be part of any of the three efficiencies that that we have discussed which i just mentioned retain all schools shuffling grade levels or build a new high school so i don't know who's going to start there eric or jane but again we appreciate you uh being available for us tonight and share a little bit um about the control project uh process thanks mike i'm happy to start in part because i have some documents open that i might be able to do a shared screen with okay and i would start with oh it appears i can't currently share well i can make you a host here if you give me a second sure good multiple so what i'm attempting to share is a powerpoint kind of a table can you see that yes okay i have dual screens and sometimes it gets messed up so um [Music] try to make that full screen okay so as it pertains to projects any school corporation has different thresholds based upon your individual gross assessed valuation within the last couple of years the general assembly indiana general assembly tied your project threshold if you will two year gross assessed valuation which typically over time are going to increase so it kind of becomes sort of an indexed dollar amount so it also changes every year because that number changes every year so you'll see on on this slide total project cost for this calendar year 2022 for nxt of wabash county so if you have a project that is less than roughly 5.8 million dollars exactly up on your screen um there's no formal taxpayer opposition which will refer to as a non-controlled project um and at the end of the day um any debt issue over that process is within your search tax tax in between that 5.8 million and this figure you see of roughly 12.1 million dollars again based upon your gross assessed valuation if you have a project that has a total cost in that range that would be subject to what we call the petition or monsters process and again if you went through all that process um you instilled any debt extra that would be within your tax cap so they would still be within your circuit breaker the last figure is if you have a control project greater than 12.1 million dollars of change and that project would be subject to referendum and you'll know that both of those processes they subject to um because they're there basically is um taxpayer process by way or limited determination hearings that you as a as a board let your voter base your tax base know about a given project and then once you go through those hearings and publish notice of adoption you basically have the call to refer to it kind of as the application petition period if you get a taxpayer petition then we have to go through whatever that process is either petition or monstrance or referendum um you'll know the big significant difference is if you have a project which is greater than 12.1 million dollars you run and you win a referendum that debt then falls outside of any certain rate of tax steps um so whereas in every other instance if you issue bonds out of this process it would be within the tax steps if you run and win a referendum basically uh it's an oversimplification but essentially um every taxing unit whether you're at one percent two percent or three percent would end up paying 100 on the dollar and not have any circuit breaker that would be tripped i'll pause there and see if we have any initial questions based on that and just looking at the various levels of total project costs is our gross av correct on there i thought it was just under 800 million does that require it might be helpful to repeat the question because i couldn't really pick up if that was a question or a comment that might be a gross indeed he was asking about the is that our about our ab our ab has been around 760 million dollars but we would still fall i believe under that threshold because it's the it's the isn't the greater or the lesser of the two did you hear that is it the the lesser of the two eric on that a b that it so there's two different figures most of the time the world we operated we work off with the net av which takes into account all the um deductions etc um for this purpose when we're talking extremely about estimating project costs this is the one instance where we look at where's assessed valuation as a hosting net most of the time again when we're dealing with most other school calculations or formulas are dealing with net av this is the one instance we're dealing with gross yeah i don't see any other questions on that eric thank you yeah i'll stop sharing that screen then so again when we talk about process if you have um any project that is referred to as a control project whether it's subject to petition or monsters or referendum basically start that process out by conducting two school board meetings uh two school board hearings um [Music] there's no set limit on how far apart those meetings have to be so they could be within your regular compromise of your um typically twice a month orbeez they could be space further apart whatever you prefer um and then again once we conduct those hearings and let folks have comment during those two hearings we would then publish a dose of adoption assuming the board adopts the requisite resolutions and then wait the during the application position period to see if the community seeks either those processes and if they do then we go either to the petition or master's process or we would start taking the steps towards putting a question on the ballot if it was subject to referendum any other thoughts or questions based on that well you're explaining that very well thank you i would also note too as an aside that the referendum process does involve quite a few other parties they're basically outside of control of the school corporation so some of those parties include the county auditor's office because the form of the ballot question changed by statute as of last july of 21.

i pledge allegiance to the fight of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you and welcome everybody for coming tonight um future board meetings april 26 at 6 00 pm here may 10 and may 24th at 6 pm here we have no revisions to the agenda so we move right into the public recognition i have a recommendation to approve a 200 donation for mark hewitt doing business as head to head games for northfield esports a recommendation to approve a 100 donation from tammy and eric overman for sharp creek elementary robotics a recommendation to approve a 500 donation for shark creek elementary robotics that did not say what was prompted but i assume that would be the famous anonymous person and that's it for uh donation recommendations thank you donations appreciate it so yeah motion second to approve the donations although we're saying hi hi school recognition okay we have several in the audience tonight we're really glad that they're here to share some different things i will start though uh cynthia bell mrs bell at southwood um she shared with me uh an assignment that was done during e-learning and a lot of times we talk about e-learning we talk about what is really happening um and i'm not gonna say anymore cause i steal all the thunderbirds i'm gonna turn it over to mrs bell and let her explain and i will also put it on the screen when you're ready okay with our students here also so for e-learning i have given the students the assignment to teach someone how you name chemical bonds if you can teach it you know it and i got some wonderful wonderful videos for kids that's as that was part of the assignment when she had the videos to take yourself but libby price went above and beyond and did a ted talk and she and her little sister just stole my heart and i had to share this so um libby this was probably the best a learning assignment i have ever received and i was so grateful i've watched it multiple times [Music] so do you want to say anything before we show the video um [Music] oh i just i love when we get you learning assignments like this when it's not just like sit here do some outcomes turn it in when it's something i actually gonna interact with so that's kind of why i went above and beyond because it's something that you actually really enjoy doing great so let's watch okay guys why am i not enjoying my videos is can we shut up is [Laughter] you don't have the internet's there let me stop this is a different computer and maybe that's the view oh because it's on my computer it's not on the screen so it's not you can watch it on your computer would you like the kids to fix it yeah we're gonna do this found your email that says that liv is coming this doesn't work [Music] everybody can see how loud that is right oh yeah [Laughter] well you can see it right there oh now you have a good point but i don't think you're saying isn't it [Music] but hello [Music] so if you have a transition model those can a long time have more than one sort of so he made them known and then the roman numeral afterwards and then yeah [Music] so if you had sulfur and it was going to gain electrons you would call it sulfide got it [Laughter] which is a chlorine two oxygens and still has a radius one star and then you would have four eight which is the chlorine three oxygens and resonance and then chlorine so this chlorine has three oxygens four eyes gonna have two hydrogen's gonna have four and perchlorate is gonna have four this is but these don't tell you how many oxygens are heavy so for example sulfate has four oxygens so it's depending on the quality of falling to say that then we could pass that out right now so that was that was excellent so that and i apologize i don't know we do this all the time on the side i don't know why the sound is not working um because the tvs were up my computer's up so i don't know so that's going to cause another issue with our next one too so all right mrs bell anything else um i just just really enjoyed watching the different things the students did it was very open-ended and um some students were two minutes some students were 15.

teacher will receive another award this award is presented every year to an art teacher with the most students receiving gold ribbon awards so that's quite an honor mr gray has 10 students receiving this distinction you should also note that she submitted 12 pieces of student artwork congratulations to mrs gray also at metro north robotics team had their last regular competition season on saturday and they were amazing there was a long day at matches but in the end we made it into the finals and placed fifth in a field of 48 teams our second graders were competing with other teams that may have sixth grade students proving that metro north team can definitely hold their own the team also received the think award a special recognition from judges that applauds our team's ability to write code problem solve work flexibility and collaborate so congratulations to all of those from sharp creep they want to celebrate students in different uh miss hughes adelaine hopkins miss black miss leonard and mr turner and teagan bear being selected on the 2022 symphony and color contest school finals these six students are also named exhibition finalists which means that they're in the top 100 statewide and to top this off all six shark creek students have earned a gold ribbon award for their artwork this is the highest of honors for this contest is awarded to only 36 artworks in the state of indiana so congratulations to them and again katie gray shark creek raised two thousand twenty six dollars for the leader dog fundraiser in the urbana alliance club and adding 500 to that so the total raise was that doesn't add up so it might be 2526 but it says on your 2026 shark creek will be sponsoring three liter dog dog puppies lucky snickers and jacks mrs rigel's class raised the most money and they received an ice cream party provided by the lions club mrs brown's mr brown's class came in second mrs ross came in third the k kids would like to thank the entire school or community for supporting this fundraiser shark creek would also like to congratulate all of the robotics for the recent strong showings shark creek hosted the wall bridge county linen finals on february 11th the blue north spots team a and southwood circuit knights placed first in the teamwork challenge additionally the norse box a won the skills award north spots white gray and black all placed in the top four in skills and so on february 12th they competed as a cinema and they also did very well there too and i believe mr snyder is up all right so friday february 11th so it's been a couple weeks ago at the bluffton game the nhs boys received an exemplary behavior report from your names reported the team including all players and coaching staff showed tremendous sportsmanship the entire game even after being called for violations they would run over and hand the ball to the official they were helping opponents up off the floor very respectful you can tell that everyone has bought in as it was through and through the entire team hopefully the fans will see what the kids and coaching staff are doing which in light of recent events sunday i mean they're seeing on the news you know coaches smacking other people and starting brawls and you know northfield hasn't had the most successful season we're in transition we're getting better the kids are playing hard working hard for their coach doing a great job that's good to hear because it's harder to have good sportsmanship when you've had a rougher season than it is when you're winning all the time and so i think in light of recent events that's even more kudos to the high school kids for showing the college coaches and players how to act after games and during games for mr johnston the choir teacher he had choir students participate in the island district solo and ensemble contest on saturday february 12th at carroll high school in fort wayne they earned three gold ratings four silver ratings seventh graders emma wilson trinity thor and landon mast all participated landon received a perfect score a cappella choir members caden cruz anna hodson and addie france seeing an ensemble addie france saying earning a gold rating to advance to the state contest held on saturday february 19th congratulations to all of them we also had northfield students make the wabash county honors band and choir they'll be playing at board theater on march 11th with all the other wabash county schools those band members are landon shu claire thompson haley barton turner stevens isaiah beale madison griffin alexis lovell john nessler kyle nguyen and natalie keller we also have the honor choir students joining them caden cruz anna hodson addie franz and jasmine kelly and then we had the art teacher entered some northfield students into the huntington university art show and they had a high school exhibit there and a lot of this stuff has been posted on our school facebook too so asia miller got honorable mention for her sculpture break free good job asia who happens to be here and uh kenya barris had photography ethan sloan photography jessica ray mixed media demo bone drawing avery napier drawing lane denton ceramics may napier and jc crunk also did ceramics and then i also want to say congratulations to hannah holmes and emily pennington they made the uh conference um all-conference team ainsley dale honorable mentioned for girls basketball this year so a lot of stuff wrapping up and finishing up over the winter sorry if i left anything up i'm trying to hit it over here you did a good job asia i thought i'd put you down since you're here thank you so next we're going to go to the school resource officer and spotlight and not necessarily just because the school resource officer but because he was spotlighted and so if i could have asia and officer kirkland to come up here because you will be on facebook live so right here right there we'll get you all i'll get out of the picture so anyway um every month or every school board meeting we do this and this this time we actually had adrien miller who was a what what you're doing junior at northwood junior senior high school who nominated officer kirkland and also we had someone else another staff member and i'll read that after um asia kind of talks about why you nominated officer so you're on the floor you got it okay so i nominated officer kirtland because i felt like he deserved the spot the most because he just fits the spot at northfield as a resource officer in the best because he acts like a child half the time that's not what it says here so it fits in with so he fits in with like the rest of the students and then and he's just like makes every student act like a human like treats him like a human and um he just makes the school better because he brings out everybody's true personalities and he just is amazing thank you very good and i will say then so um amy powell who is one of our bus drivers and she is also one of her paraprofessionals at northfield she also nominated eric kirkland and so i will read what she has to say she said she was not able to come tonight because she has one of her children has an event says sro kirtland does so much extra work he constantly helps bus drivers making kids smile in the hallways and he's underappreciated for sure he has worked extra helping with safety measures and making sure kids get to class on time he has formed wonderful relationships with students across the schools that i hope will never be forgotten he is a great listener and always there right when you need him he has helped so many of our my students i am very thankful for him so on behalf of msd of wabash and also our sponsor first farmers bank and trust let's give office kirkland why don't you just say that there you go and then because i don't want to imagine there we go there you go so we've asked everybody we've asked everybody to go ahead and read the card first so read the card okay says congratulations because you have dreamed big and worked hard we figured you might like a soft place to rest thank you for doing what you do so well it's a staff spotlight so what is in there it is a silky smooth meek touch luxury feeling remember anybody read that yesterday oh my i god it might have something on there about this oh yeah it says uh dream big workheart msd at wabash county yeah so of course this doesn't you don't use that during the school day though we're gonna make sure well yeah sometimes you get a little tired all right thank you very much for nominating him and thank you for coming tonight i appreciate it let's give you a little round of applause all right thank you guys thank you all right so i think that concludes the public recognition so we're going to move on to public comment for agenda items online there are a couple of comments um i think it's from amber bretzman she wanted to add shark creek robotics good news that team a and team d won automatic state bids and so team d won an excellence award which is the highest award he can give a team and team b won a design award for their engineering notebook team a is currently ranked 14th in the state out of 553 teams and she's afraid she might have left that off what she sent to mr martin so that might be why she had to share that well so mr gretzman that's one that's when you don't he has it on here and now that i see that it's a fun fact that she said so i appreciate her saying all that because that's something i probably should have highlighted um with the other things there's just a lot of information on that little box when we do it in excel it's a little harder to read all that and scroll back and forth so and she also wanted to thank southwest elementary for hosting the league this year she knows how much work it was setting up and tearing down and she appreciated the work of erica tyson and amy schmidt all right we'll move on to the consent agenda items um we need approval of the minutes from our last meeting motion a second to approve the minutes from our last meeting all in favor say aye claims foreign payroll nothing new on payroll uh probably see anticipated uh increases uh just with the winter sports claims coming in as the season ends so i gave you uh a first forecast of what the education fund and operation funds cash flow could possibly look like throughout the year and obviously this is something that ebbs and flows each month as things change and come out and so the education fund for 2022 currently shows the expenses reflected at with the estimate cost based off of trends and current teacher contract obligations it does not reflect any potential wage increase at this time um it also reflects revenue that's estimated based off of past trends and it also does reflect the basic grant revenue showing september 2021 adm counts and december special ed counts throughout the entire year we just recently had an 80 and count for february so that money is not reflected in this at this point in time as well as any july estimates that we have to provide to the state that they base our last six months of funding off of uh and then which would also lead to the september actual adm counts for that year as well so it's pretty vanilla at this time as far as the cash flow is concerned and represents like i said basic trends from previous years with that and then for the operations fund you're looking at similar type of information it does not base off of any potential wage increases for expenses at this point in time this year we are actually looking at wage increases when it comes to things that might come out of the operation fund for our classified and administrative staffs um and then like i said most of the uh other expenses and revenue are just based off of past trends well the state of justice anyone updated they do they do not do that until i believe um april may and june i think those are the three months that they reconcile the count from february so that's why it's not reflected correctly were they going to do away with that sometime the second count yeah the second count yes yes at one point it used to be two counts that was one count and then went back to two counts and there's not been any talk or even legislation about changing okay and there's been two accounts for quite a while but at first they were just seeing what the counts were but it wasn't money wasn't tied to it and then they went to it and they took it away and that was legislative okay chris there's pretty decent growth in this operations fund projection do you see anything where we'd be changing the transfer into i just wonder so uh as so there could be room to change that percentage and what i mean by that is the percentage could possibly go lower um from that standpoint the the increases that we're starting to see now are because we paid off that self-insurance fund so our transfers are no longer like as large as what they were in the past so that now has freed up our operation fund for more operational type expenses and we had the energy savings that came back again so in reality this can help us continue to do things with our buildings and maintain some of those areas that maybe have been deferred because there wasn't the availability to do that we were always doing that through bonds the bonds felt system too because of the capital project because we've been taking we've taken those costs out of the bonds but eventually some of those are going to have to go back into the operation fund that's all i really had with that somebody jinxed us though i think maybe a few more minutes ago saying that we didn't have to worry about any snow removal i think that might be kevin that seems like [Laughter] yeah all right we'll move on to personnel under resignation we have nicole powell paraprofessional elementary uh win bus driver for the north and cali baker social worker for sharp creek elementary um under employment we have tim smith custodian at sharp creek elementary and northfield spring coaches we have the following kyle france had softball jeff crum volunteer softball nicholas gulotti volunteer softball matt tryer volunteer softball torrey shaffer head baseball stan cox assistant baseball drake tomlinson braden riplinger matt burckhardt joseph mitchell all assistant baseball heather hayden head track scott hopper volunteer track tristan uber assistant track larry vaughan assistant track day climbing assistant track colin dawes head boys golfer anthony sword head junior high golf marian milam head tennis and casey dyson assistant dennis southwood spring coaches steve swinson head baseball cory blocker dan lloyd christian dieter all uh no cory blocker and dan white assistant baseball christian beer is the jv big small coach gary dale head golf carl pace head softball chad lambert gary marion tablet the klein assistant softball cynthia bell head tennis taylor leg assistant tennis tonya boone head track jeff fenicle and carrie hamill assistant track jeff hobson junior high track daniel moses jr high track natalie underground track and devon dale assistant golf that is the entire state of personnel [Music] we had a meeting last week they had a little bit of an update on the eda grant they're still trying to work out the concerns with the higher-ups in chicago and stuff like that yeah so there's no real news on that um except that perkins assessment grant of 7 600 and that's just to help to get that every year mr hobbs reported there were 67 positive students from the beginning of the year copenhagen and that's it and then heartland careers center scholarships they give out you know from the rental money and they give out i think a thousand dollars so it'll be like eight of them so they want to make sure that the counselors guidance counselors have all that information because there was two or three from last year that are not going to be awarded because they ended up they got awarded but they didn't go to school didn't take their so instead of being 8 000 it's going to be like 11 000 this year or something like that so put that in front of the guidance counselors and have those kids yeah we leave emails and they yeah i'll let them know that's it okay super yeah i just want to mention uh my computer i wouldn't mention that our adm dr kuhn did mention about that so we did have that certified and we have great news that our total adm we increased uh 74 students and that's great a lot of schools don't necessarily increase from fall to spring and also then just to give you a little bit more data from spring 2021 to spring 2022 we are up 24 and a half so not only did we increase from fall to spring we still increased 24.5 from last spring to this spring so that's very good that's really all i had as far as curriculum recording yeah i shared with you guys an nwa report um it looked at yeah there we go um it looks at kids test scores from winter of 21 through winter of 22 and so this data is actually specific to the kids that took the test and so all the kids that we have in 2022 it only takes their data and compares it to the ones and twenty one so somebody came or gone there aren't included on that and it's always nice to look at some of the highlights there so 174 students during that year grew at 90th percentile as across the whole entire country and so we're all about growth we feel like that's the best thing we can focus on when kid comes in we meet them where they're at and help them grow and so that's about 26 27 of our kids um grew on either test reading or math and of those then the 31 this is even more shocking so these kids grew at the 90th percentile but then they also scored at the 90th percentile so these are your high-flying high-achieving kids that still grew compared to other students that scored that high and so um just thoughts to celebrate there i'm going to pause with any questions that'll kind of make sense and this is nwa data so we get it back very quickly once we take it i'm pretty reliable everybody feels pretty comfortable with it and so then underneath that uh i try to find classes that do well and so um you can see the school and the grade level and so the entire sixth grade at sharp creek from last year this year those kids as fifth graders to sixth graders grew at the 90th percentile compared to other fifth and sixth graders across the country and so just some really exciting things down there and as you scroll down the reading there in third and fourth grade lots of growth and so lots of things to celebrate underneath that of course there's always things to be concerned about and we are seeing some issues of reading growth in our primary levels primarily be k123 and so uh we are addressing that um we're working with teachers and principals um and it's not it's not dramatic and it's not scary but it's just enough to let us know that we've got our work there's there's an area that needs some attention and so one of the strategies we'll use to help support that is uh i'm sure dr or mrs boone somebody will bring up summer school i might be speaking out of my turn here but we're going to offer summer school again for k123 kids just like we did last year it was kind of uh mrs moore coined the great phrase it was summer school on steroids and we're going to do that again we use esther dollars to set aside to pay teachers to come in to work with their classes and we feel like just that extra four or five weeks with those uh kids will make a big difference and so um so yeah yeah that's the latest update i don't usually get to share that so i'm glad i got this you find this a lot more reliable than like the ice dev yeah it's just consistent right nwa has been doing this for probably since mr chief was in school it's been around for forever and uh and it's got a huge a number of participants i mean they test across the country it's consistent and so yeah we do find that very reliable um it's unfortunate it doesn't meet some kind of federal requirements to be a part of the testing or at least that's how the department interprets it so otherwise we'd use that instead of highway ilearn might be good but we're only on our second year of it right so there's just so much to work out whereas enemies have been there and done that this is a formative assessment where you actually can form the instruction whereas the summative at the end of the year is after over those kids are going to another class and and all those different things so most schools would say that they would rather have this as their state assessment then it turns over quick too you're not waiting six months yeah yeah getting it back so i told you we'd have the data there that says that and so we're already able to address that now while they're with us rather than next year or whenever yeah so when you took that test without the feather fan and the ink it's actually like a stone tag was trying to make it a little younger all right we'll move on to new business new business we have a recommendation to approve the continuation of using the food to school purchasing cooperative for 2022-2023 yes so this is an annual renewal just based off of when they have their meetings and determine which procurement uh vendors and things like that that they're going to select and then allow us to select to be a part of that so we've been a part of this group since 2019 it's done well for us we would like to continue to use the co-op for our purchasing procurement for msc for the 2022-2023 school year i need to continue on with the collaboration motion second to approve continuation of using the food school purchasing co-op for next school year all in favor say hi and now we have the recommendation to approve the second update to the re-entry plan and supplement 2021 2022 regarding contact tracing and quarantine key favor speak to that yes so first of all we did have a re-entry plan that we started out with then we had a supplement to the re-entry plan then we had an update to both of those and so that's why this is called the second update to the re-entry plan and supplement for 2020 21 2020 2022 can't say that very well right now so contact tracy and quarantine so as i mentioned here um the indiana state department of health no longer recommends contact racing and quarantine in schools effective tomorrow um so it's perfect timing for us to have a board meeting on 2 22-22 i'd have to say that that's kind of fun with this recommendation mst walrus county will no longer contract trace or quarantine closed contacts beginning on february 23rd 2022 if you approve this schools do not need to re report any coca-19 cases information to the idoh school dashboard will be discontinued because that's what we've been doing all the time for a long long time so i'm not going to read the next part but if individual tests positive it's no different than what you had before but we want to reiterate that that's still happening um if they are test positive they need to quarantine for five days they can come back to school with a mask for days six and ten as long as um their symptoms have subsided and so and they've been uh fever-free for 24 hours with no medication or fever-reducing medication so with all other illnesses students should not return to school unless they are fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication and their symptoms are resolved so i would like to recommend this and hope that you would follow suit with that motion and second to approve the second update to re-entry plan and supplement taking away the requirement for contact tracing and quarantine asymptomatic people um all in favor say all right uh under unfinished business we have nothing board policy nothing public comment on anything let's give them and any items from board members okay

pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for welcome all here future board meetings february 8th and 22nd and march 8th all here at 6pm we've got a couple little revisions to the agenda nothing major public recognition we have a recommendation to approve a 30 donation from steve and becky bowman for the south with cross country we also have a recommendation to approve a donation for 2483.33 from educator brain state aws foundation to purchase books for wwe staff recommendation to approve a 10.40 donation from casey's general stores for student use at southwood elementary recommendation to approve the 30 and 30 cents from box tops for education general mills for use at southwood elementary and we have a recommendation to approve a 500 donation from crumb farms for northfield junior high girls basketball a recommendation to approve a 200 donation from an anonymous donor for shark creek robotics and finally a recommendation to improve a thousand dollar donation from tiffany albert and ryan harrington for charlotte creek robotics very generous i would accept donations okay question in a second to approve the donations all in favor say all right school recognition okay i'm gonna go ahead and do the ones that are listed from our other schools and then if mrs boone has anything and then we'll go ahead and do um our highlight tonight for our staff spotlight so i'll go ahead and read a little bit here first of all daniel at southwood south would like to recognize the following southwest graduates who made the dean's list for the fall semester at ball state university kim hobson monica hopson kayla mays and logan arnold way to go knights cardinals also congratulations to aaron flaner who made the dean's list at indiana university as an elementary education major way to go so it's nice we do get those from time to time from the colleges and universities and then mr martin at shark creek shark creek elementary would like to thank the urban alliance club and dr lindsey culver of midwest eye consultants for helping us kick off our current k-kids fundraising efforts on behalf of the leader dog for the blind students are participating in a penny war and other opportunities to assist in funding the training of lucky a puppy and training and i had the opportunity to be able to go to that presentation and the k kids um which are elementary kids of of like the kiwanis that great service group that we have anyway uh did a great job as the president the vice president the secretary i think there was uh three of them that actually did a lot of the presentation of course dr lindsey culver who's also blind um uh doing that so we appreciate them and then also from mr martin at shark creek our robotics team programmers had an opportunity to virtually meet with purdue university's vex u programmers recently thanks to the southwood our sharp creek i'm sorry coaches for making this happen as our students love to learn from experts so it's really neat to have that connection with purdue and learning what they know and helping those students uh with the the robotics so that's all i have tonight as far as what was written from the other principles mrs boone do you have anything are you just going to share a little bit with um a message okay summary of things okay let's just do that the reason we're here okay yes um well i'd like to just highlight my staff in general because we have had we've served over 427 students so far this year and just in the last two days we've had we're pushing 10 new applicants and that's just how our world goes it's just constant in and out and so it takes a lot of maneuvering and teachers being very flexible willing to be flexible and working their tails off to get students engaged right away and to keep up with all the management and onboarding of students so i really appreciate their their efforts and also i wanted to highlight our graduates so far this year just in the first semester we've had 48 graduates and so that's pretty exciting and we've got a lot more on the docket to hopefully have done by this summer time so we're pretty excited for them and it's a lot of a lot of those students this has been an opportunity that they wouldn't have had otherwise so just appreciate you guys as continued support of this program and of our students and and our mission and with that being said when i talk about us having having served 427 students to that point that's who's enrolled as of right now but we have 30 students that we are working on enrollment and hope to have done by next week and every one of those students goes through kylie's hands so she meets with orients their them their families and spends all that time just meeting with the families going over our getting them on boarded into our program making sure that they get off to a good start that's a lot of work every one of those kids takes a minimum of two contacts and two is choose a blessing that normally does not happen it usually takes a lot more than that but just she's reaching out she's getting them engaged in our onboarding process getting them through our orientation course and then she's scheduling enrollment meetings and takes time to get to know our families and get to know the students make them feel welcome out of the gate so she is kind of like she's the first voice and first face that our students and families meet and her personality and work ethic just fit that um fit that role perfectly so we just we're very appreciative of her and her efforts especially during well throughout the year she's constantly onboarding kids every day but and i'm not exaggerating when i say that she's doing onboarding every day even works through the evenings and weekends when that's what accommodates to to accommodate our family schedules so just really appreciate her and our entire staff the way that we all work together as a team is we get a lot accomplished for a small number of people and lots of kids so just really proud of them and proud of kylie an opportunity to recognize her tonight okay and before we go to that i want to say one other thing too so uh we always have to talk about having the people the right people on the bus i mean you know as far as the seats that they have and so obviously we have a great staff with that and one thing that we have to really work on and they have done ms boone with her whole staff has done a great job is just to make the program accomplished with fidelity and i think that's been a big goal of hers and with the staff and so that's why there's a lot of success when there's a lot of a lot of other programs out there and so it still continues to be the same way like that so i really appreciate that um there so at this time though we love to do the spotlight and so if um cara and kylie can come up here um we have to make sure we get you at the front and center as far as the uh the camera goes you want them to face that way a little bit once you face that way so they can the camera can see you so anyway mrs cliff teacher uh with the bridge program nominated uh kylie so i will go ahead and let her share with what she said and you can share any you don't have to do it well i'll stand here so um this is still true about kylie so i'm just going to read it and then i'll add to it so when i nominated her i put that kylie gives 100 to her job she's thoughtful does a great job with getting our students going and stays on top of things diligently she's always kind and that's how she can help she's truly a huge asset to the bridge program and i still believe in terms of every word of that i think i nominated about three months ago but it doesn't matter this is true every day of kylie and when i came to msd after 29 and a half years at another corporation like she was so welcoming to me just personally i mean she had her 100 000 things she was doing but she never made me feel like she couldn't stop and help me with something and help me figure out how to transition to be part of the bridge program and now as i worked for two and a half years here and my students when i onboard them myself for what i have to do which is after her process like they know me and they say talk about kylie or mrs roman and they're just so happy to have connected with her and had somebody feel like they care about them because so many of our families come to us when school hasn't worked it's been a negative thing for them and so to have the teacher to get them already over a little bit over that hump of feeling like this is a positive thing and this is a new hopeful situation and that's on kylie and i love her and i'm so glad to work with her thank you [Music] all right um kyle do you have anything you'd like to say um well this is my sixth year with msc um i've had a couple different roles but i will say this is where i'm supposed to be this is where i'm meant to be this is where i want to be um i have an amazing boss co-workers our team is just incredible our mission i just am blessed every day to be this is what i do like i i'm just i just love that so i'm super thankful all right thank you very much thank you and so on behalf of msu wabash and our sponsor because we have a sponsor through first farmers bank and trust i'd like for you to read the card out loud congratulations because you have dreamed big and worked hard we figured you might like a soft place to rest thank you for doing what you do so well staff spotlight and so a soft place um there is a blanket in there but i don't know if you ever have to be able to use it because you don't have enough time to rest i'll use it i do want to say one other thing too i was going through some pictures today i was showing some a picture of something and i noticed that you were in a picture um congratulating one of your graduates at the honeywell center and so when mrs boone talks about and that's probably maybe two years ago or well i don't know when it wasn't yet but i got to look at the picture again probably at least a year yeah so when mrs boone talks about flexibility you know traditionally we have graduations uh you know at our schools and things like that but they meet the students where they're at and however that works and so i remember that one specifically too especially when i had that um that picture of and with her daughter and with her daughter because that's part of the mission too because there's different situations that happen with some of our students that they still need to graduate but they have life situations that make it a little bit more difficult and so she did have her daughter and you were there and i took a picture of both of you so anyway congratulations on that let's give her one more round of get one more applause with all that and because our mr drake's not here tonight he usually does that and she said to me and with send it to you yes please thank you thank you so like i give all of you you guys are welcome to stay for the meeting um but uh these guys won't cry too much if you leave but it's up to you firecrackers at this point we will do public comment for agenda items only so if you want to stick around and say something you can't but we're also probably going to catch up with people viewing on facebook right now thank you for having me all right so we'll move on to consent agenda items uh the first thing we have is the approval of the minutes and i'm just going to lump these all we did three different meetings last week and read through the meetings and want to make a correction to any of those we can do that but i'm just going to do these all together so i need the approval of the minutes for the board of finance the reorganization and the regular media from january 1.

i move to approve those minutes second promotion a second to approve the minutes from our last meeting on march 22nd off the february approval of financial reports claims it's not a big deal but we had one bus getting outfitted with cameras and there's a single bus is that special use or we're just trying that's normally what we do every new bus we do we order a camera yeah we put them instead of having the dealers do all that stuff because then we can put them on trial with them a payroll just a little higher than normal and that was because that was for the final payout for all of our winter athletic portions until question that second to approve payroll all in favor say hi financial celebrity doctor uh just giving you the end of the month balances for march so everything looks good and in the direction that it should be heading education fund is up a little bit and some of that is just through some grant dollars that we have transferred in from preschool in the coming year we're going to take a look at it wage salary package for yesterday at the next board meeting i would like to propose uh classify and admin salary wages for the next school year we didn't do anything for them last year and so you've been doing kind of a two-year cycle at this point so yes i would like to bring that to you guys okay we're going to move on to personnel in under employment delilah watson cook northland high school kerry hamill long time sub at southwood high school pam campbell long term sub at sharp creek elementary daniel stauffer varsity assistant varsity chair at southwood jacob lloyd volunteer assistant baseball at southwood barney copper volunteer assistant junior high track at southwood and troy andrews volunteer assistant track at northville high school for transfers we have reno louise custodia transferring from southern high school to southwood elementary effective leave and you see the dates there that are affected probably most of the second to approve the personal recommendations all the time to say aye aye okay partly first we will have a meeting next week so okay okay superintendent's report i don't recover don't necessarily have a report because i want to go ahead and talk more about the next new designers all right curriculum i'll be bringing the textbook approval to you guys at the next quarter all right kind of this one week it's been a great blessing okay under new business we have a recommendation to approve the heartland career center amendment operating agreement all right so you have that in front of you just a little bit of an explanation so in 2018 the agreement was changed to reflect more of what the state of indiana does as far as the money following the student because right now the share of the balance of the five different schools is based right now um 75 on enrollment and that's enrollment of students that are in uh grades 10 and 11 of every school every high school and then 25 is based on an assessed valuation um as we look at that agreement um it does not appear to be anything that that continues to be what the state does as far as the money following the student so mr driscoll being on the board and that's what it says in agreement and myself brought a proposal that we would change that and the change would be that this coming year it would be an 20 split and then every year after that it would be five percent more until it gets to the point where it would be a hundred percent uh based on enrollment when i say enrollment it's how many sophomores and juniors not how many actually attend a heartland career center but how many are there because that's how we can be a possibility of going to heartland and the way the agreement reads now that the board of managers at heartland does not have to approve this proposal but every school board has to prove the pro proposal and so i'm asking tonight that you will approve the proposal and every other corporation has to do the same thing so it may pass and it may not pass in every district but it's it's on the majority basis so whoever has three votes yes or no will actually follow then that proposal um if not we have to settle with that but right now it does say that that it can be brought up from time to time as far as discussion of that and i know we've talked about this before but here again the rationale for this is because um the money does follow student and we pay the funding of that particular fund out of operation all right i'm sorry out of the education where we get the money from the state not necessarily from our tax dollars there's a separate account the capital projects account that they have at heartland that we do pay more because we have more assessed valuation we're not asking to change that at all we're asking just to change the share of balance that's what what they call the department career center so any questions are we the only ones that would see a decrease or is there anybody else um we would see a decrease or maybe would see a decrease manchester um would see a decrease over the last eight years there was a couple years they saw an increase because of this but typically they would have they would pay less also so because of the lower assessed valuation of peru and huawei city they would pay more than and the reason why we would pay less is because we have a higher assessed valuation here again assessed valuation is not where we're getting the money for the students we're getting that for the operations account so yes three districts pretty much would this proposal would pay less and two districts would pay more have been any other votes voted yet um no unless manchester is in their meeting right now and wabash is going to have their meeting on monday and i don't know about the other two districts when they're actually taking that school board so we will find out but jordan's just based on so your decision tonight um will be in in concert with uh a whole thing concert but with the other four as far as seeing what the vote comes out to be well the sense of fairness and the benefit of msd our motion that we approve the amended agreement for parliament career center funding they have a motion and a second to approve the hartford career center offended operating the agreement all in favor say aye aye okay excuse me recommendation to approve the resolution authorizing negotiation and execution of a purchase agreement all right [Music] here we go so here's the resolution authorizing negotiation i'm going to just read and an execution of purchase agreement one thing i want to mention about this and make sure it's very clear we again in september we had our work session and then act after that in september 28th we had our actual school board meeting to say that we would you were authorizing us to go ahead and look at appraisals uh for some real estate uh that has uh been concluded and so at this point we're asking that you approve this resolution but we have to remember that this resolution does not mean that we are purchasing anything it just means that we are looking at an agreement in other words there will have to be some kind of options um that we look at because if we would move forward with any of our strategic plan we would have to make sure that the other options just like eric and jane talked about today would be i mean we just have to follow all those steps first so but to be able to continue the process um this is just another step of the process and i don't know if i made that clear enough but just to be very very clear to do this allows us and reading through it it actually allows myself dr kuhn our council our legal counsel for dice miller and also our school board president mr daisy to be able to work on that um that agreement but the agreement would have to have some kind of option in there that um that if we did not continue on with the strategic plan for one of the different uh options that it would not be something that we would do so ask questions if i missed that all out so this is just an option to buy a future if right and if we choose an option that doesn't require additional land then this is an option that we would not exercise correct but we have to have this step completely to be able to exercise that option should we choose to get that right very good good have a motion and second to approve the recommendation uh the recommendation to approve a resolution authorizing negotiation and execution of the purchase agreement all in favor say hi all right hey carrick's recommendation to approve the overnight extended out-of-state trip for northfield 8th grade robotics to the next world robotics in dallas texas on may 2nd through the 6th 2022 my recommendation would be that we do that or we're going to have to go through [Laughter] i need to approve the recommendations here to approve that extended trip second motion second to approve the overnight extended trip out of state for the robotics trip to dallas texas all in favor say aye and we have a recommendation to approve the overnight extended out-of-state trip for the sharp creek robotics teams third grade fourth grade fifth sixth to go to the same robotics competition earlier was the i didn't make that clear was for the north field eighth grade this is for shark creek third fourth fifth and sixth to go to the same event however that is on may 9th to the 13th i'm sorry it's about the same it's different times different times does it i mean most parents want to be going with some of the younger kids are you volunteering i've got one that age and i have i see him ending up in mexico well i think it's great it's lifetime memories so i motion to approve motion second to approve the recommendation to allow the sharp creeks third fourth fifth and sixth grade to attend the world robotics in dallas texas on may 9th and 13th we have no unfinished business and we'll move on to board policy the first reading for the uncompensated lead policy mr p yeah just to let you know that i actually have the proposed and the present policy and really what it's interesting to note that we used to have what they call neola and yola was the northeast association of ohio lawyers and basically what's new stood for and we had two books or two binders that were very very large and a lot of times people didn't know what all those policies were because it was just like encyclopedia um you're probably not gonna be able to memorize all that um and so prior to my time in this seat we actually went to um another policy that actually would be borrowed from another school district in fort wayne and all of the principles of the time and i think mr great and dr king were involved with some of that too we actually we all did it together as far as learning it looked at it revised different things but one of them was this uncompensated lead and as you notice on the second part or the present leave there are a lot of different situations with that that makes it very very cumbersome and a lot of times people didn't even know i thought there's another page there's not a page there you can see how it's uh logistically to be able to follow all the times when you could leave and not leave but yet here again it's uncompensated so if they didn't have a personal day if they didn't have a sick day or if they didn't have um in some some of our different groups of classifications of t uh of staff members we have vacation days and we also have chris for bus drivers we just call them what we just changed that to flex days and so with that we thought it would be much better to be a lot more succinct to how they're supposed to do that and so this is basically the new um proposed policy as far as uncompensated leaving here again uncompensated lead we want everyone to be in in the schools doing what they need to do every day but yet we do know that there are situations where they may not have enough personal day or sick lead things like that so it has to be uncompensated but we also know that we don't want that to happen um on a routine basis and so this is just a lot more to the point as far as what we want them to do we will actually track it and it won't be necessarily tracked by what this chart was before so you can see that basically the guidelines that are listed there and how they'll be monitored and tracked to measure a pattern of absenteeism and then of course uh that will also be noticed by our supervisors principles and things like that so here again this is first reading if you have questions if you have things you can look at um it would be voted on at the next meeting did we draft this or is this coming from no we got it from someplace else maybe a couple of tweaks to it um to make a language to fit no we get we get we we get the attendance reports and so we can do it by attendance reports and and there were times where um the old policy which they were supposed to come to me there would be times where i don't do payroll i don't do i don't see all those but now with this new one we'll have uh payroll um staff be able to monitor a lot more because we're going to we're going to watch it a lot more so because we know the policy so once it's approved if if it's approved we will push this out and make sure principals know and all staff know what the procedures are the principals will monitor at their buildings but we always catch it when it comes to payroll because they're either out of days they have days or they're active days and so they have to adjust their pay well previously i mean it quantified days and all that yeah no no it doesn't right part of the problem came up and it was covered related and we had to have a lot of these uncompensated things and then you look at that it was not going to be able to be battled because we talked about it talked about even insubordination well it wasn't insubordination it was just that's the way it was i mean they didn't have any more days they were quarantined or whatever so it caused problems what else okay just remind you that's the first reading that we won't have anything public comment on any items just i have a question on the purchase agreement do you have evidently you have a specific piece of property um that you're looking at at this time yeah okay and really public comment though i will make sure that we mentioned that so what a lot of times you can ask me afterwards um because uh we can get into a lot of conversations back and forth it's really just a comment time so i just want to make sure you're always allowed to come in and talk to me too so anyway go ahead though um on a purchase agreement doesn't seller and buyer have a signed ad yes okay so that ties up his property for who knows how long time is that right that's true i would believe that's part of the purchase of the the process of negotiations it will boil down to what the terms of the purchase agreement are right anything else do you have some board members all right

um so now we have to work with the county auditor um who does a certification on various percentages that have to limit the question we work with the county election board to do preliminary and final approvals of what the form of that public question would look like on the actual ballot and then we also have to work with the dlgf because they also are statutory required to review a ballot question um they're given a certain time frame to do that so um there are a lot of other steps that have to take place um and they all have a deadline so um i say i just said that there are you basically have to work backwards quite a bit in order to if you do want to put something on a ballot in particular you have to work backwards quite a bit to conduct your own approvals and then go through the approval process with all the other parties in regards to the ballot process is there a requirement as to which uh ballot it's on for primary versus general can it be on a primary or does it have to be on the general does it have to be our primary as of right now it might be on either primary or general so in other words could be uh okay or we're gonna that's remember a question i just say it thank you sure we're having great weight wait time as teachers sometimes we don't uh give them the three to five seconds for a wait period out there but we're doing a great job here so but it's good anything else of the asset from us you think would be helpful eric is there any uh ballot restrictions like how many times you can put something on a ballot um that's a good question so the short answer to that is if a ballot question is successful obviously we would move forward and issue the bonds and continue on the project if it was unsuccessful that particular project as described would be considered defeated for a period of two years essentially try to do the math uh 720 each day something of that nature unless there is a there is a process by which um the voting community could um put together another petition to ask to only wait one year as opposed to two and that would be for that particular project as described in the ballot and who do you uh petition that too eric um i have to go back with the deceptions your fingertips they would certify the number of taxpayer signatures if there weren't sufficient tax payers then it would go to the county auditor and they would certify the tax i'm sorry voters first then the auditor would look at the taxpayers and if you had enough then that's all that would happen you could go ahead and start that over again it would just go well again the reason why we have you coming here tonight um is just to learn a little bit more we eric of course and jane you worked with us quite a while as far as our bond council but when we talk about our strategic tour and talk about different different options that we have these are some things that we just want to make sure that the school board learned a little bit more about this you know we talked about it uh you know we've learned about i you know legislatively we learn about different things too and even the question that mr daisy had um you know there was some legislation at one time that it could only be on on the november ballot but that has not been passed of course so it still is the november or the may but that's some things that legislators were looking at also but anyways it's good just to give us this information as we proceed on and as we look at different ways to continue looking at our 60-year kind of 60-year look out there as far as our plan we still look at our our pictures you can't see those but we have our board members from when msd became a school district and i know that they had a lot of thoughts about you know what's it going to look like 60 years from now and i think that's what our goal is to is to say what what can we what is our long-range goal and plan for the next you know 40 50 60 years so appreciate your time here dr i don't know if you had any more i guess you know you talked about just some time tables and some requirements that we would need to do and also have to depend on some other entities for those requirements you know what kind of time like in general how much time do you typically need to have in preparation before a ballot would potentially be put on a november let's say um election or a may election i know the more time probably the better but can you talk a little bit about that that turnaround process sure um and we again we could work backwards so using a general election question on november 2022 so this coming november i would use as an example um generally speaking i would say that even here sitting in april it would be pretty tight to be able to put something on november 22 ballot here's why um the deadline to have all of the action done so recall that i mentioned a few moments ago that we have to work with the county auditor the county election board and the dlgf all independently in all kind of different potentially overlapping times um the deadline for all the action to get approved for the county election board to do a final approval of battle languages by noon on august 1st prior to that again we have to have the count election board typically meet twice wants to approve on a preliminary basis the form of the question and then to do their final approvals in between then the dlgf has to do their own sketch for a review of the public question and to make sure there's no there's no bias or against the project prior to that again there's work with the county auditor to help do their own certification on certain percentages that are statutory required to go into the public question all of that work only happens if and when we receive an application petition um and so there's typically up to 30 days to do that and that only happens once you have conducted two public hearings and the school board has adopted their requisite resolutions um we call one in particular the preliminary determination resolution so once that's been um accomplished um in order to get to a public hearing where we have a preliminary determination resolution and what we refer to as a project resolution or a 1028 resolution we have to have not schematics but we have to have some level of detail as to what the project entails because there are certain boxes that have to be checked if you will or legal requirements that have to be met as it pertains to what the educational needs are and how the proposed project would meet those needs so again and don't have to get down to a certain design level but just enough to be able to let the public know um in some level of detail where the project is [Music] those particular requirements well i think you did a great job going through the legal requirements and you know basically the summary is in order to get something on a november ballot although those things that eric just went through has to be done by august 1 by statute period for may all those things have to be done by about the third week in february that's just the legal steps the part that is much more difficult and um eric certainly has been in a lot more conversations with your administration than i have lately but to the extent that you need to have a question on the ballot because of circuit breaker or because you think that somebody else in the community is going to put it on the ballot then there's a lot of upfront preparation time because in the best situation it is hard to win a capital referendum and as as eric mentioned the general summary changed the form of the question and some of the restrictions here last year um going to this may election we have a handful of schools that are doing a capital referendum and a few that are doing an operating referendum so it'll be very interesting to see how that change in the form of a question changes the success rate i was trying to pull up some of our statistics we have some stats about how what the percentage of success has been in capital referendum and operating referendum but the capital is not merely as successful in the school referendum world as the operating is there's a several reasons for that but i would say to plan for having a referendum especially if it's a project that's complicated like you're moving kids you're changing buildings you're changing configurations there's a lot of upfront conversations that have to happen and not just with your school community but unfortunately the people who vote regularly in elections aren't necessarily the people who are in your buildings every day my guess is if you would order ask your clerk for a copy of all the registered voters in your school corporation and compare it to your parent and teacher list you probably would be surprised at how many people aren't registered voters and so when you're looking at a referendum election all of a sudden you're looking at a really different way to talk about the project what is going to make people who regularly vote in that election that you're going to be on that ballot whether it's may or november what would make them vote yes because it's going to certainly look like and in many ways probably is a place where you are raising their taxes and so if you add to that anything that moves their cheese or they're mad about something else like a basketball coach or your umass or you name it um all of a sudden the chances of success on a referenda ballot becomes even more difficult and i'm not trying to be negative i'm trying to make sure everybody understands the time and and what it takes to educate a community and get to a place where you can have a successful referendum it's it's a lot more than just the legal steps um and many of you all know that i mean you saw wabash city run their referendum a number of years ago and that operating referendum how painful that was to a community um but i don't have any more questions about that i don't know eric if you can pull up the form of the question i was just going to ask you could you like what is it in the question that's been changed that has made it more confusing um that were easiest so hopefully you'll get it i i put on there what vigo county's question looks like lebanon schools question in franklin township they're all going to an election here in 21 days and you're going to see sometimes we have bulleted versions of it i didn't have a chance to do that while you were talking but as you go through it you can kind of walk through the question once eric gets it up on the screen there and you're gonna see it's ugly um for a couple reasons one reason is that it now the general assembly wants language in the question that says the average property taxes paid to the school corporation per year on a residence will increase by x percentage and to figure out those that calculation pretty tricky your financial advisor will do it for you but in this these three examples here one of them is 55 one of them is 21 and one of them's 24 and that's just um and and these are not some of them aren't particularly big projects in their large districts so it's that percentage is is very difficult to try to explain to somebody because it's just the school corporation's share of your taxes um okay go ahead eric i'm sorry can you see the old informative question until 2021 yes so what's in red is how it used to be and it basically just um well i'm sorry this whole slideshow you see what's in red is what were it's kind of the fill in the blind portions so it's basically a project description and it was rate based so it would say a project expected to cost x with a maximum [Music] service rate of y now um in contrast just the length of the question is much much longer and again the part in red is the only part that is permitted to be basically adjusted or described by the school corporation everything else is totally described so you've got these percentage increases um [Music] references the prior referenda if if that is applicable and so let me stop this and i'll pull up the document that james has shared and again those are based off of averages right so it may not yeah that average may not apply to me or may apply to me differently than it would apply to you because it's an ad it's it's actually worse than that because the whole calculation uses the word average if you think about it mathematically a median home would make a lot more sense because with an average you could have a few high-end houses and that pulls up that average opposed to using medium so you're absolutely a great point that's the first kind of problem with the way the law was written the second is is the school corporation's share of the taxes so for example let's say i'm paying 500 a year right now in taxes but only 100 of it goes to the school corporation if it says 50 in that formal question i think i'm going to now pay a thousand dollars in taxes not the 500 but it's only the school share that's going to increase by the 50 percent 50 so right away you could see that's just confusing because it's just the school share of the overall tax rate what is the increase it also as you can see here the third line talks about a residence and a little farther down it talks about business so you have two calculations one for your average resident and the other is an average business there's nothing in there about the two percent people so nothing in there about rental property or farm for example um so that's one piece of the puzzle that's much more difficult than it was before to pass and unfortunately the question starts out with those percentages so our schools then because when this first came out we knew about the the average and we knew that was going to be very very confusing so are schools putting out more information then to try to explain it more or are you allowed to do that or to explain what this really means yes yes i mean you can actually try to explain it the difficulty is you're still raising people's taxes in many cases because this is outside the tax caps and that's a whole other conversation it's very difficult to explain and when you have anybody who's opposed to you because they just don't want to pay more even a dollar more this percentage is just easy to throw at it as i just i talked to a superintendent today one of these superintendents and they said you know usually the taxpayers our community doesn't want to believe the government all of a sudden now they believe the 55 percent and 50 percent of this this question because if if you're opposed to it it's right in the question you know that's just very difficult to explain yes you actually can you can put a calculator on your website have a place for people to put in look up their own assessed value on their own property and see how much their annual bill will increase but it is hard and it's confusing and then when you add to it things that are reconfiguration of space or complicated projects that's a lot to explain at a quick election i guess is my point this is the kind of stuff you have to have quite a few meetings with your staff maybe even put together a group of community members who are well connected so that they can answer this when they're in the barber shop or when they're you know at the farm bureau or whatever so when those questions come up you have advocates out in the community who can say no no it's not going to be 50 cents here's how much it really will affect you et cetera and if you want to scroll down that vigos is there but lebanon and then franklin township is there as well and in lebanon's case they're actually replacing an existing referendum so it's coming to an end they got one approved i don't know 10 10 12 years ago they paid it off quickly so this actually will not change the tax rate that the people in that community are paying and yet it still has percentages of 21 in it because of the way it's calculated by the statute in this case 11-1 is four that's kind of an operating record example oh did i grab the wrong one oh i'm sorry they have a capital of one too i don't know why we were talking but here's another example of a capital referendum there is a lot of conversation out there to see whether it's possible that this question can get modified um but partly because there are a lot of schools who need to come back as eric was just saying for operating referendum and this language makes it very difficult to even win a renewal of an operating referendum so it's possible that next session we could get some changes to it it's hard to say certainly if you're ready to go and read and move forward you wouldn't wait necessarily for that i will say one other thing about the planning part again it doesn't have anything to do with the legal steps but i guess if i run a school board or in an administration i do think i might consider having some real polling done so when you get to the point where you think you know which of these options is the right one and you think you know about how much it's going to cost and therefore what type of tax rate we're talking about before you actually start those formal legal steps so eric was mentioning i would consider having some kind of polling done i know sometimes people don't want to spend the money on that i certainly understand it but i think it is important to try to hear from those people who usually vote what is it going to take for them to vote yes and going into this you want to be successful and so it's helpful to know what your chances are at least at the time you're taking this poll in may the election's not until november and obviously a lot of things can happen but at least at that moment in time you know you know what dollar amount if this was a 30 million dollar project are you more likely to vote for it or less what is that tipping point where you start to lose voters if they knew that the project was x are they more likely to vote for it i'll give you an example we had a school district a number of years ago who did some polling and they had a pretty good possibility of success except for a weight room and for whatever reason and i still don't know why that was a hot button that that people didn't think at that time that those kids needed a weight room so after the board and the administration got that back and they saw that it dramatically lowered their chance of success they took out the weight room with a project and they were actually able to win that referendum they came back a couple years later and did the risk the weight room on its own as a separate project but that kind of information could be helpful as you're trying to determine what is the right scope and dollar amount in talking to your community that's one way to find that wow jane i had a question and this might be too much in the weeds but on the franklin uh example and i know it's not up right now but the franklin example it talked about uh yeah that's fine but the amount of money and it went um over 22 years and i guess i was just curious what clarification of 22 years because most bonding i thought would be maximum was 20 years so i guess i was just curious about that yeah that's a really good point um it's going to be 20 years of payments you're absolutely right and it's but it's a 22 year lease and that's just sort of a technical thing for marketing purposes okay i didn't know if something changed that i didn't know about so obviously it hasn't changed i don't want to [Music] mistake this but this example that we have on the screen i believe that looking at it from a net basis that this proposed debt would be tax rate and neutral is that correct as well um i think it's the other projects that we are doing our tax review okay okay i know what you're saying i think this was designed probably not to be and that's one reason it's uh and explain that a little bit because that is confusing so what i was getting at yes so maybe this example doesn't apply but regardless of how we calculate the gross tax impacts you know in a lot of cases we're bringing around other debt and so we don't get to talk about in the form of the question being that effect so um they basically we have to consider this public collection in a vacuum um not considering any other community falling off et cetera and the other things too and i'll i'll pick on the question the form of the questions in front of us where steps are totally required to discuss the prior most prior referendum whether it's successful or not in this case it was more than a decade ago but statute doesn't allow us to uh not reference it for that reason so we have to add in this final sentence saying that for the decade ago we had an unsuccessful referendum so just a couple other pieces that are required to form the question now that seems to be [Music] overly punishing in the way that they're required to be worried if a referendum is something that you actually going to pull that trigger yourself and get on the ballot or you think it's likely somebody in the community will do that and we can talk about this separately there are a lot of different ways to approach that community conversation but it should be very well planned and thought through on how to get in front of and get input from those voters not just necessarily school users and there are a lot of ways to do that i guess well i was just going to say we're getting close to time to have a little break before we start our regular school board meeting so i didn't know if there's any other questions from school board members comments dr no thank you thank you very much very informational yes that's what we needed all right appreciate your time we continue to be at your disposal okay if you have any follow-ups after you've concluded i choose to digest yeah i guess it would be nice too i took a picture of it but uh the one uh slide that you sent to us if you could send that to me too that'd be great just to have that as a reference i've seen a lot of different ones but that was obviously very clear and concise to the point so appreciate that we did that after our last call with the anticipation of sharing on the slide tonight so yeah i would love to send it to you once we're all here all right yeah thank you very much all right take care we'll go ahead and end this call see you later [Music] before we take a break was there any discussion we wanted [Music] a building is one project those non-con they called it a non-controlled project and so that's what we have been doing we've been staying within a threshold and just doing little projects here and there over two to three years and that all that requires is just board approval then anything beyond that is when you run into either the remonstrance phase or reference it wouldn't yeah you think that's realistic because i thought it was back about two or three million it used to be pretty low and it's increased over time and like he said it will continue to increase over time but it's not going to increase significantly so here it goes all right listen during this work session and welcome back here for a regular public board meeting

um they trained everything from dogs goldfish stuffed sharks and their siblings so it was it was kind of funny you guys never knew what was going to happen but it was um it was enjoyable for me and like lady said that they enjoyed it also so the next time they're dancing all right and you are correct though if you could teach something then you know it and you learned it very well so i'm sure libby's um she enjoyed that too so we appreciate that so we'll move on then to thank you thank you guys for honoring them yeah that was great she taught us something all right we'll do another presentation then we'll do our staff spotlight so we'll go ahead now with uh mr martin and mrs schaefer and i wonder how this is going to work it's not going to work either because i'll let you go ahead and introduce [Music] but i believe the focus is uh this is our building's time to uh uh publicize a program or a person or something good going on so mr schaefer is a person not a program but in education we know that it is about people it's not about programs and she is a uh an experienced teacher who i appreciate like you didn't say old i did extremely but one of the things that i've quickly come to appreciate about mrs schaefer this is true of other teachers in our building please understand that she's representative but but as a an experienced teacher she's still wanting to learn new things she's still out there trying to find other ways she takes it very seriously connecting with students sixth grade greeting and this is just an example of a unit that she's going to work you through a little bit tell you about but but it all goes to show that there are a lot of teachers in this corporation who are working awfully hard to provide students with experiences and opportunities that reach beyond the reading teacher she's incorporated other subject areas you know some stem type activities so we just want to show off mrs schaefer and what happens at sharp creek on a regular basis so all right well thank you first of all um school board and mr key baby thank you so much for allowing us to actually take time and do some trainings because this all came from a training that i did at makerspace when i left there i thought this is such cool information what can i do so during this time that after this makerspace training i had a student teacher as well so i had all this time that i could actually spend some time planning well then coveted so everything that i had planned just kind of got stopped well this year i had the opportunity after talking with mr drake and have been the encouragement to incorporate more reading in the content areas mrs campbell and i decided to do a unit together which incorporated reading and social studies she was doing a middle ages unit well when i was planning it two years ago the part of our training was working with robots so i got this fun idea sometimes i thought why am i doing these things that we got the little spheros out and if you haven't done you haven't tried one of these they are so much fun okay it's just like a little ping pong ball you can set up a race track you can there's all kinds of things that you can do with them the kids love the sphero we also use the edison which is another type of robot they both take coding you have to code programs um but the sphero actually you can just drive it and once it's hooked to your ipad so that is also really really fun well also oh yeah yeah they struggled programming those but that was part of the learning process she goes well we want to do something with march madness she goes do you have any ideas what we can do for both reports yeah i do so one of the things that activities i found was um you can do kind of like a museum exhibit where these are you can program the maki maybe which is an elect electric current and you can program them so it's act and record your voice so the kids can do coding and they do book reports and that's kind of part of our march madness so now we're all voting on our top books after they hear um the voice recordings so that was another thing we're doing but when i started the middle ages unit these were my first of my goals i wanted them to explain be able to explain why europe was such uh their location was so important so we had to do that first and this would go right right along with what mrs campbell was doing well then one of the other sixth grade standards is they have to be able to analyze information from multiple sources so we were reading all kinds of books going with what they were doing on ixl and putting it all together well part of the requirements then you got to write an essay about why the middle ages was important how does location what were all the aspects of the middle ages and then finally i used you have to expand your skills in coding to be able to program the sphero and the edison we had them driving the sphero down the hall into everybody's room and then the edit said that they were making laughs so they figured out how to maneuver them okay this is um all of our curricular connections with this just this project alone we included the reading the writing math social studies science we can even include the art in there you're going to see some wonderful buildings that they created and all i gave them was a white piece of cardboard i said this is what you have any supplies you you need you find or if you find scraps around the room you can use it i did get jingle box blocks from i've got those volunteer course uh we did speaking and listening and then the library did the maki making so this is some of the projects starting out they had to some of the kids brought objects from home so i had a castle back there their their topic was actually nights and battles and jousting everything like that i gave them each a topic i assigned groups this time instead of letting them choose because they always gravitate to the same ones so i said we're going to separate them and i didn't want all of my coders the ones who do all the coding i didn't want them all in one group so i wanted at least one in each group so they started out with white cardboard they brought in stuff from home and then they had to start drawing out because each activity each person had their own essay they had the right well they had to code um the sphero or the edison to stop at a certain place so that's part of the coding that was oh my goodness that was fun so watch them apply it was them and not me because i had i couldn't figure it out i can drive it but that's about it okay so that was super so we're just getting started um they did have a lot of fun um at times it was crazy and i thought if somebody comes in here they're to think i'm completely nuts or this room has no control and that has a veteran teacher that's really hard not to have them sit and talk you know be quiet it just didn't work so they were still in the planning process there on the left on the right you can start seeing that they're putting a sphere on the place and some of the people coding weren't who i expected which was really cool thing um as we went okay next one a little more in detail some more taking a lot more seriously than others some of them were still very unsure but i could see different skills come out in different kits which was completely unexpected but it was welcome because i wanted to see them all in different lights okay they had some pipe cleaners they used that as a tunnel and they had to program the the sphero to go through the tunnel lots of start starting stops but it worked um the one on the right they were using the edison and nate hudson who's got the culture on is one of the drivers for the robotics team and does really really well so he loved this so he was helping them code um this they were doing a street so they had the edison go down to the street turn around and go down another one as each one did their own presentation that's where the speaking and listening came in some okay them got very very creative as far as their drawings it was just they were using my kleenex boxes now i have kleenexes everywhere without homes um but that's okay we cut up popsicle sticks worked up in um it was so much my room was really it kind of was nice because they were cleaning up all my scraps um josh there on the right he created his own there's were um theater and entertainment and certain um people that they were researching he created an actual theater he painted it he had details on it that looked like curtains and then each little statue had a different person on it like i said the only guidance i gave them was you got to do this and the robot has to stop they didn't like not having so much um there's some more of the finished products they brought in all kinds of stuff they shredded paper um but the big point was to get them to think outside the box try to come up with other ways to make stuff and they had their first encounter with the glue gun i had streams of glue everywhere it looked like we had spider webs they were going home with trey oh my someone realized that hot glue was hot but they struggled trying to figure out where to place the ball or the sphero and how to get it to move from place to place but they figured it out okay um one girl spent like two or three hours i think she said three or four hours creating her cathedral yeah and everything was created out of popsicle sticks leftover aluminum and some little jewels that i found in the bottom of the basket and she took it home so that's what was on the left she was doing her own cathedral one of the activities that i wanted to get to there were so many i didn't know how my time how it was all going to fit um we were going to build castles and have battles for the spheros but i ran out of time so they were using the jenga blocks as a castle so it still worked clear to the right which looks like toothpicks they are that is a cornfield or some type of field because they had to grow their own crops just to support their um their city so that was their own field and they cut out little people and it was fun and then the legos legos were a hit and they had a well in the middle and i was curious i said why what's the wealth they looked at me and they said water you're right why it was in the middle i wasn't that they put them right there so it was fun okay and then you start getting a little more creative with a little more um design and then we started getting into the battle so the big thing was the battlefield um they had their characters and they actually showed the battle um where the sphero was going around of course there's some exasperation kids he could not get the code to go right where he wanted it so he finally doesn't have enough um but they were working together again i put them in groups that they don't normally work with some worked well some we had to separate but it worked but they got very creative um these coming up are just some of what the kids were saying the one on the left is actually one of the spheros actually working for a short period of time i don't think we sound but that and it is amazing how they coded it and how much time it took to code it this one they were you know that one coming yeah they were explaining there it is why is it working out uh so they had to measure and they were using like conversions to figure out how long it's going to take the robot to go so far that's the same one yeah yeah so that if the next one has a couple other ones you just have to hit twice again okay and again okay um same thing only they were getting it to work um oh that one was probably the new one i added um they they got the pro the the sphere i didn't give you access to that sorry i had to redo something because i didn't like the way it looked uh well anyways this one they were actually um had it where it was making sound so they added sound that they were talking about um well it's going to make a turn here and then it actually created sound um as the ball vessel sphero was going so that was pretty that was fun to watch them exacerbation look again because well i'm hoping you have access to this one oh here's what the um library was doing with the makey makey they would start they had to re they had to code it they were creating their book reviews and then the kids would come in and push yet to push one of the tabs with aluminum foil and push another of the book and it would actually then read it to read the review to them and then they voted but the coding process is phenomenal i don't have patience for that so i'm thankful somebody does and then this one oh i might have to get get access for that one one of the suggestions that i was going to do was having the kids do a scratch story which is a programming um a coding program he created his own middle ages story using um scratch and again and he loves doing it so he did it on his own and i was just impressed that he he could actually he's got the knights and the battle and the background but that's kind of how the project went um and i told the kids i was coming today well they've known it um i said what would you like for me to tell them oh this is fun well that's good um they like that it was hands-on they like the freedom and the creativity they've really found it was really interesting and they enjoyed having partners that were new um and they liked it because it was different than taking notes which was good um and but some stuff they did learn is you know it's hard to work with people you don't like very well i thought that one was funny um but they did learn that it was a lot more to the uh peasants day life than what they originally thought which was at least they learned something about the middle ages too but that was our project i'd like to do now though is we're going to do the spotlight because i told him that i know that that he needs to get going and maybe too but i'm going to do the spotlight and then i'm actually going to throw try to throw this up on the screen again for libby's let's see if that works if you guys are okay you're staying a little bit longer so all right so um what we love to do is uh the spotlight and tonight we have amanda rhodes is the spotlight and becky bradley is the one that spotlighted her so if you guys can come up here uh dr coon's gonna put you on the camera so we can see you mr craig can you go ahead and give a picture one time so so amanda come over here right there right there that's perfect so amanda rose's spotlight congratulations thank you but then becky is going to go ahead and explain a little bit uh what's going on here so tell us a little bit about amanda and i'll talk about it okay amanda is kitchen manager for two schools sharp creek elementary northfield high school her overall quality of service of the food service department she shows positive attitude when it comes to a job and is willing to help others lead by example a good example of this with last year is the covert we have food shortages paper supply shortages staffing shortages that we still are and amanda hails like a trooper she never lets a phaser here now she always has a smile on her face it comes with a positive attitude that could ask for a better employee all right oh well thank you i'm just glad that i have a child to come to it so yes and mr martin would you like to share anything too i i know that we share amanda with uh the junior senior high but i have said and i i guess you're responsible for this problem but i say we have better food than any school i've ever worked in and we have pleasant people working with our food and it's just a good situation very impressed and when you try the fish sticks you let the kids vote on whether they thought fish i thought that was really cool and they seemed to like that i think that's really mean did you let the kids kind of weigh in on whether they thought that was a regular weekend yeah very cool and i've got to add how nice it is planning a sixth grade camp and trying to get food ready and not knowing what you need to get and going where and i would come to mantis what can you service did she all get business and she's so willing to help us deliver it if we need to because we switch places and it's just a nice time to go down and say hey can we do this and she's fine with it so it is such it's so nice to see you when you come in thank you and i have to say one little thing i mean i just got this thing going on right now where i i'm for the south i'm south of high school manager right now and she's a north field manager so we're trying to see who can get the best sales every day to those and i just want to say one thing too i'll hand this to you first though so this is an msd place to rest thank you for doing what you do so well and i told becky no we're not going to do this though at north shore creek though this is something for home but i do want to say something real quickly though too i know during covet you know we had to make a lot of changes you made um thousands and thousands of meals and i always know that when i went to northfield um at the time i think what you were doing two years ago yeah again i think everybody's just nailed it that uh very positive and and that's a big part of being around people and being in the schools to be very positive we always appreciate that a lot well i have a great staff that helps me out too so all my ladies are wonderful so all right well congratulations [Applause] all right i know you guys need to take off and i'm just going for the fun of it i don't know why why that just started working too [Music] be non-metals those are going to be anions because they're going to gain electrons and gain a negative charge and just to name those you add i to the a so if you had sulfur and it was going to gain electrons you would call it five got it okay and it's named atomic there are four different things that you do so for an example you have hypochlorite which is chlorine oxygen and then and then you have chlorine which is a chlorine two oxygens and still has bonding and then you would have chlorate which is the chlorine three oxygens and has a negative electrons and then they have per chlorine which would be employing four oxygens in the negative one triangle so the hypo the i the eight and the per you how many oxygens are going in there so since chlorine has three oxygens fluoride's gonna have two hypo is gonna have one and perchlorate is gonna have full [Music] sulfate has four oxygens but while chloride has three and sulfide has three oxygens but chlorine has two so it's depending on the polyatomic how many oxygens are in there and so that's how you name the alloys all right well thank you guys for coming you're welcome you're welcome to stay but uh typically people take off yeah all right sorry a little bit longer because we kept on doing it [Music] thank you [Laughter] [Music] all right i'll go through these pretty quickly here so we do have a lot and i won't read every single name but at southwood junior senior height um they want to congratulate the knights on outstanding basketball season of course they won that third consecutive title we kind of mentioned last time that he wrote it on here because i think i mentioned it but one thing i do want to say is though that the team that they did get me by at lafayette central catholic they are in the championship game state finals so they played a very tough team um southwood also was proud in norfolk also of all the outstanding musicians who participated in long beach county honors band and choir and then we will continue on here don't go too fast here so congratulations our eighth grade robo knots knights on their awesome robotic season they completed and competed on saturday march 12th at the vex state robotics championship at lucas oil stadium on saturday so congratulations to them mr mcdaniel also wants to congratulate the south of 10th grader grace denney she won a level three award in the indiana state library letters about authors contest way to go grace it's just amazing all the different contests and different things that are going on mr mcdaniel also mentioned the ffa chapter participated in the discovery degree quiz bowl contest at huntington university on saturday march 12th members of the team did well and participated in the ffa exhibit there were several students there too so we wanted to congratulate them the ffa knights also congratulations from northfield to mr johnston and the junior high choirs the northfield 7th and 8th grade choirs participated isma junior high choir contest at manchester high school last saturday and received a gold rating in their division and it was very interesting because that's the first time they have done that for many many years so glad that they were able to have that opportunity and won mr snyder also talked about the robotics team who've had an awesome day in annapolis of course they are going to go on to worlds i think you know that going to dallas texas in may mr snyder also mentioned about the northfield students who were going to the honored abandoned choir concert mr boone talked about the red circuit breakers the fourth grade and the sixth grade represented southwood elementary at the vex state robotics championship uh they officially wrapped up their season did very well you want to thank the coaches mrs erica tyson mrs kelly bear and mrs amy schmidt boone also wanted to mention every south of elementary student recently had artwork on display at the honeymoon center for the fame festival big thanks to mrs tyson for getting all that work collected and a time spent setting up and tearing down the fame festival it was a good time also the kindergarten students went ahead and they sang there saturday morning he also wanted to recognize the spring banner art show and rep reception at the honeywell center special congratulations to jacob he's a second grader whose artwork was selected to be printed on one of the large banners that is now hanging in the downtown wallabish area he also mentioned that trot a first grader was honored this past sunday in annapolis at the symphony in color t awards trots artwork one of the 60 36 finalists across the state uh mr goon also said that uh 22 uh fourth and sixth graders competed last night in that first annual booking in the bash friendly reading competition the teams did really well there it was fun southwood elementary watching the two southwest teams and the sharp creek teams competing mrs jennifer finney and mrs house elizabeth were the coaches and actually one of the southwood teams narrowly uh it was a narrow victory uh they were going into a tiebreaker it took a while and they ended up winning by one point mr boone also congratulated and thanked the winter sports season wrestling and also basketball the fifth and sixth grade boys basketball coaches were brian bassett and cole wyatt fifth and sixth grade girls basketball coaches were sean klein brandy pershing and the junior high wrestling coaches carrie campbell and harley heiner mr martin has a few uh we wanted to congratulate all four of our sharp creek northbound robotics teams who were all received an invitation to the dallas texas vex robotics world's competition in early may we're very proud of them and thank the coaches mr mrs gretzman and also mr joel nessler good job sharp creek booking in the bash 2020 competitors your time and effort preparing for yesterday's competition is appreciated thanks for representing shark creek sharp creek elementary and southwest did have the home field advantage i guess that's why we think we got beaten by a very narrow margin it was a good i liked waiting mr boom friendly competition it was good and congratulations to sharp creek art teacher mrs katie gray and these students for their aggressive showing at the symphony and color award ceremony recently anthony hughes won people's choice award and an old ribbon also earned him gold driven for teagan bear toria leonard uh giona black jaylen turner and adeline you know we have spent a lot of time going over recognitions and different things like that but it's great to know let you guys see a little bit about what's going on and hearing all the positive things that are going on so i think that's it i appreciate it all right so we'll move on to the public comment for items only facebook all right if they come and we'll pick it up later all items just so uh we'll move on to the consent agenda items first item is the approval of the mess from our last meeting on march 8.

there's gonna be a lot of excitement right there so i'll start with northfield from mr steiner congratulations to the northfield 8th grade robotics team for winning the wallace robotics tournament and of course qualifying for the state meet and i'll talk about that a little bit more later on my report there were several team members of course you have logan mesa lyons cody yester and local graf congratulations to our seventh grade team we will also qualify for state with skills points norfolk junior high teams are coached by jason lyons so good luck to state this saturday also northfield congratulations to carson pratt for being named indiana high school wrestling coaches association junior academic all-state honorable mention also congratulations to the following boys basketball players for making the old wallbush county team eli crow and dylan thomason uh jackson peas and jake holderman honorable mention and mr snyder continues to say that he would like to say thank you and awesome amanda jones amanda rhodes and her staff in the northcote kitchen throughout all the pandemic and staff shortages they have done an awesome job serving the students and staff and then mr mcdaniel at southwood would like to recognize dakota wilson for representing southwood high school at the isma state's instrumental solo and ensemble contest at north central high school in indianapolis she earned a silver rating for her flute solo also from southwood congratulations to cole weiner and jason mulcik for being honored at the region five football junior class all-state team and continuing on with southwood congratulations to ourselves with varsity boys knights they took the sectional basketball title saturday with a win over lakeland christian each game tuesday friday and saturday were hard fought competitive and could have gone to either team congrats to coach burris and the crew and our athletes for their success this is the third straight sectional title taken by the knights the knights next play at regionals at frankfurt high school on this saturday i believe that is at 10 a.m and then i will let mrs moore mention the ones that she has we have artists with the artwork on display um in the state house in the rotunda for the celebration of youth art month and the students are grant abel kelly morgan addison chamberlain avery davis gage cook kenzie dietrich alyssa johnson reagan woods caitlyn lafferme and braelyn freedom and five of those all the artists were invited for a reception there at the state house a couple weekends ago and five artists were there along with mrs gray and one of our artists grant abel received the award of honorable mention for the elementary division so it's pretty exciting very awesome all right thank you and now i think we'll turn it over to mr mcdivitt share some of those things at white studios in high school thank you so mrs falbein who is our official title is in school suspension supervisor but she wears a lot of different hats so one of the things she does in coordination with mrs our girl's math teacher is they organize a winter ball every year for our students typically it's been in december we did not have it last year for obvious reasons but we have this past thursday and there's a lot of work that goes into it from mrs feldman's standpoint over the years she and those who assist her have accumulated a variety of formal dress attire both for boys and girls and so for the weeks leading up to it she takes them down takes the girls down and they go through the dresses try to pick out something that they like that fits for them the whole nine yards and so um not that this surprises any of us but i think sometimes we feel like you know the kids that go to whites are different than all the other kids and in some ways they are because of their past but in many ways they're just teenagers and they love dressing up so when they come in it's in the hot sunset in the cafeteria where we set it up i mean just like most teenagers when they're dressed up they stand taller they act more adult-like it is so it's really cool and i'm not this is like a two-minute video i'm not going to show the whole thing but i'll show a little bit but the best thing that happened as a result of this at the end of the evening white says what they call campus supervisors which lack of a better word it's like it's who the house parents would call if they need help uh and so the campus supervisors that were on duty that night as afterwards were tearing things down putting things away one of them came over to me and said i don't know this is a good thing or not but i've heard a couple kids say that this was the best night of their life and so obviously the thing can be discouraging it's like wow this is the best night of your life but on the other hand it's just really cool that we can you know make something like this happen so i say we uh almost all the staff pitched in in some form or another but really mrs feltheim is does the heavy lifting here to make sure this happens so let me just again this is a couple of minutes long i'm just gonna play a little bit but if any dancing brings out mr key paper you can you cannot because you have a knee injury i'm ready to [Music] i will go compared to two years ago there was very little dancing [Music] so i cannot say the name of the dj but the dj we use is a former student of lights from like 15 plus years ago so anyhow it's a great night and uh just like most high school principals you kind of take a deep breath and say it's another dance okay but at the end of the night it is it is worth every everything that we put into it so thank you very much can i show you one more thing let's see if i can do this right that's not what i wanted to show you so my daughter uh that's my daughter there she works she's uh she works at indiana wesleyan but as you can see all that stuff is hers and i asked her like a month or so ago hey sir would you want to come over to school the day of our dance and just you know start doing nails for girls and so she did she took the afternoon off she came over and this is in my office but it was just fun just to listen to sarah talk to the girl i mean my daughter has a lot of great people skills but just to hear her talk to the girls and get them you know get excited about getting hamilton from the dance so that was kind of a cool thing for me as a dad just to watch my adult daughter do that but uh but the girls it's a different one but yeah it was it was really cool so i mean that's it if i can steal that back then you can yep oh hold on sorry sorry [Music] for agenda items only i'm guessing there are a whole lot of people that call it they have 11 viewers 11 viewers because all we ever really did was say it in these meetings wasted enough time for them to catch up to what they want to say if anything yes okay and since i haven't heard anything we'll move on to consent agenda items approval of the minutes from our last meeting on february 22nd last meeting claims [Laughter] approve the claims on february all right pre-roll nothing different with payroll it's a little bit higher but like i said before we're starting to get some of those winter sport coaches stipends and so second to approve payroll on february financial summary just the uh normal end of the month for uh february kind of shows where our balances were at the beginning of the month beginning of the year beginning the month and at the end of the month and so still things are trending in the right direction from that standpoint i don't know if that is possible just because it's a gun that we have used okay so i just don't like it whatever go all right so we'll move on to personnel then under resignation we have kim miller custodian at southwood elementary school employment james ullinger junior high wrestling coach at wabash high school how about james oligar junior high wrestling coach at northville high school amy long cook northville high school it's because of the time change that's right april howard paraprofessional at metronome elementary uh for retirement teresa brubaker bus driver from the north and that was effective at beginning school here and again we just want to thank especially our teresa brubaker for all the time that she has spent uh with us as as a bus driver um and that means that we can have more people sign up to become a bus driver so i've seen this melissa ball if you're interested in doing that any board member too that wants to sign up they look something out to us just came a little bit harder to get the license motion in a second to approve hr all in favor say hi heartland career center report matt's not here i don't think he gave us anything so we'll move on to superintendent's report mr key favorite yeah i just want to mention um this is just kind of fantastic how things have have gone over the last uh several years but with robotics um i call it the 2021 2022 state bound we actually have nine um nine teams going um this saturday to lucas oil stadium of course last year it was virtual um but this year we have nine teams so just to let you know southwood elementary has two teams they have a fourth grade and a sixth grade team uh southwest junior senior high as one team the eighth grade team and let me just mention some of the the coaches here too for southward elementary it's erica tyson kelly baird and amy schmidt and southwood junior senior high school it's jody carr and dan wright and then sharp grade we have four teams going the blue the gray the white and the black and that's amber kevin brettsman and joel nessler and then at northfield we have a seventh and eighth grade team going and they're both coached by jason lyons i think you heard that earlier from the recognition from mr snyder and also just want to uh recognize again uh regional bound the southwest boys basketball team we did say it was 3p but i also believe it's the fifth time they've won a sectional in six years so three p but five out of six years so that's excellent and then um the courses we have coming up uh norfolk and south of bannon choir honors band performance is this friday night a lot of excellent musicians there too and also just want to mention we have and i had this on my forefoot i'm going with but also we have the northfield seniors are going to be going to boston i think they leave on sunday you guys have already approved that but that's coming up and then the southwood seniors are going to vision for tennessee in april so it's great that they're all able to do that and those are are great memories for those kids so i appreciate you always uh approving those field trips and those extended field trips that's really happening this time all right curriculum report mr great yeah yeah i've got a couple things this year thanks yeah um in the board packet there should have been i'm going to kind of go out and order here's a little bit of press release yeah i just wanted to make the board aware this was in the newspaper mr key favor maybe saturday's paper saturdays the uh i'll give you the the condensed version of it um several libraries have started to pool their resources for digital sources because you know obviously you don't have to be at the physical library it's the libraries for fort wayne the wabash across the state and so um the vendor for that is uh is one we use for our our personal school libraries and so our kids can work with that but they couldn't access the digital library because that's a you have to have a library card to do that well the vendor really encouraged libraries to try to work out reach out with schools and so [Music] we found this we found a library to do that we found a library to sponsor our schools so that all msc students can access uh this they call it connect but it's just this digital library that they can get to on the cloud and so um we've got juvenile and young adult things that kids can check out there they can check it out at any time on their ipad and it automatically when it finishes it just returns it back to them and so we're just really excited to find somebody to do that to offer they say thousands i haven't looked at all of them but it's a lot it's a lot and anytime you can get especially in a rural county where you get access to all that stuff we just think it's amazing to promote that and so we want to give a special thanks to i want to be careful to say it correctly pulaski county i've got a got a ringer in the room to make sure i say it correctly uh because they were willing to step out and do that so the vendor connected us it was funny the vendor connect asked me on a tuesday hey what would you think about us reaching out to the libraries and i said you know well they're not going to find in my mind i thought well they're not going to find one and then sure enough by friday they had found one and connect those so it was just that fast and so just really excited about that so if you see the newspaper somebody asked there you have kind of a background so we weren't able to do this locally yeah that's that's a great question um we actually learned about this from a partnership that wabash carnegie library has with another local school system um and it came at no cost there's no cost for student membership there's no cost for any of that stuff the libraries buy the books like wabash carnegie would own simple books but so would other public libraries and so actually that's where we got the idea because they partnered with local school and give their students free access however we we tried to work with them after a couple meetings we went to their school board and sorry library board yeah sorry uh and and made a presentation there but they denied our request um they denied access and so we thought that's kind of what encouraged the vendor to go do that um the vendor was kind of surprised because they had not had that happen yet um and so that's why they were prompting us like they kept honest about that and so when they came up with this idea i thought well i mean if you can find a library to do that and sure enough the people of pulaski county stepped up and um and we have it a it's a win-win for students i mean there's no cost there's no work you just literally our students would literally just push a button that they would use to access books in our library at the school they don't realize that it's not at our school it just connects them to those things and we get to monitor them all uh jennifer neal our head librarian already kind of looked through to make sure age appropriateness and stuff so that we make sure they match the values of our community and so and plus i think pulaski county has some excellent people there and still trying to trust their values as well based on the people i know from that area so so you should see that pressure if somebody has any questions please have them contact me i'm kind of the one that's kind of been organizing that and might know the most and the high schoolers are they'll they'll become more of this out that's right and so at the high school level they can already check them out um and so they've already been able to check them out on their ipads and so we've let librarians know it all schools and we're trying to let english teachers know to try to get the word out um we don't expect a huge following for this um it's probably in this group that'll do that at the older grades but even those handful of kids that might do it you know to give them access to this it's it's really cool so let's i mean just all different titles and all different books yeah primarily at the high school level it's more the classics and so not quite the excitement but once you get to the like the elementary the juvenile like they're a lot more kid-friendly kind of books that they're going to enjoy but there are some and they come with audio books and they're not audio books like siri red like robotic like they're actual actors reading them and so it's quite a quite a right range and to be honest we found out about this how long were we doing this it was about three years ago that we tried to get the system to work with carnegie library and every year they added more books like not just wabash but like the other group has so i don't see this slowing down i feel like this is going to be the way the future and so um they say thousands i would i would assume soon will be tens of thousands as we get other libraries yeah the vendor put it together they wanted us to promote this because they want more people to access the books so there's one part to that and then if you look on my report um [Music] we are uh as an administrative team we've been really toxic about trying to narrow down our focus as far as what we're going to do academically and the and the term literacy kept coming up and so that is that's going to be our biggest point is promoting literacy and one way we wanted to do that was to try to make sure we had access to materials um not just digital ones but also print and so we're kind of us old-timers remember that there used to be a cycle like a six-year cycle of you know adopting science this year and social studies out here and so we're currently in the math cycle and so we sent math teachers to go look at the textbooks to get some of the get some of that and so we'll actually be bringing the math here shortly but today i want to bring the findings from the social studies committee and um you can see kind of the notes there we have we've been at this for about a year with the social studies people and so they've explored them and they've looked hard and so we're going to make this recommendation to you guys here in a month or so we want to leave it out for four weeks to look at but because of the way spring break falls they're actually going to have a couple more weeks so at the end of april we'll come back with a formal recommendation but this is just to let people know that we are looking at some some materials and we have print copies of those here at central office that members of the public can come look at and check out if they want to we have parent representatives that are currently have some of those materials too that are looking at those i just know in today's age everybody kind of gets real attentive when you talk about curriculum and things and so purely transparent we've been looking at it for a while and so if anybody wants to board member or club member the public wants to see those we have those we'll have those here from now until um we'd like for them to check them out now in a week prior to that board meeting so that way we have a chance to respond to them and make our final recommendation to you guys this has to do with printed text correct so there'll be a set of 30 in class correct somebody taken home if somebody wants to get one yeah yeah um and you'll notice that some places some classes didn't want to buy books and so they're still using the prior books and some of the materials they've kind of a huge accrued along the way but yeah printed textbooks uh several you kind of have a wide range some of our teachers really want to have textbooks on hand and some of our teachers really enjoy having a visual too they feel like that connects with the students and so i feel like that's healthy as i look at the big picture because students that prefer to print are going to get a chance to access it that way in some classes and students like the digital like we're giving options to those kids because they're going to have to be able to read something on the screen and they're going to have to be able to pay for it so i appreciate the next one i'm curious that has been done people learn better as with most studies it depends on what they want to find when they go looking most of the digital research was set up prior to the ipad becoming such a useful thing and so reading books on doctors is not very convenient and so a lot of the earlier studies 10 15 years ago will say yeah kids don't learn as well reading visually but now that we're reading on kindles and ipads and it's much more mimicking what paper looks like there's a lot of research that's that shows that it produces positive impacts as well i think my personal opinion just off top of my head uh regardless of what kids are going to do that right that's i bet i bet our kids will probably getting most of their news media from facebook and tick tock and twitter and whatever else and so we have to engage them where they're going to be um but that doesn't mean we should sacrifice the academic readings as well i think probably even some adults might live in that area so i'll bring a formal recommendation for the social studies materials at the at our board meeting at the end of april um and this is a chance for public so the numbers that you order is that based on uh what recommendation or so you'll notice that are you talking about why there's 30 yeah so buying textbooks is is costs i mean it's costly and so if we buy 25 now and we end up losing to you and somebody moves and so so 30 is a general round number most of our classes are in low 20s 2021 and so it just gives teachers extras in case they have to send one here and the members that come back but i have a feeling you're gonna talk together recommendation to approve the 2022 summer school courses i'll let mrs moore so we're looking at offering similar experiences for our elementary students like we did last year we had roughly about 200 kids participate in some sort of activity last year um whether it be through what i would say more of a traditional summer school where it's an academic business for our minds in action which is an enrichment focus but we're looking at that from the end of may through june um just mondays for thursday and then offer also for that academic person parents the option of either half day or all day in partnership with ymca i'm not sure what's the first year we had done that as well well off of the half day we've always had a full day yeah i'd say the other highlights are the expansion of the minds in action program which we'll do some uh exploring uh different parts in across indiana right yes so our younger group will stay close to home just afternoon experiences and um then our older students will have two campouts one in southern indiana where we're looking at some caving and then at the indiana then if you go ahead and go to the secondary page um boone has kind of been in charge of the secondary summer school has taken that over and it'll be continue the same offerings that we've had in the past we'll have driver's education we'll have the opportunity for a credit recovery we'll also have the opportunity for um advanced uh advanced credit as far as maybe trying to work ahead or maybe fit in their schedule uh and some other opportunities that we may not offer through indiana online academy and then we'll have the summer ag program as well and again these are all offerings and a lot of that depends on the actual number of enrollment that we have for those students because we have to have a certain ratio to be able to get reimbursement from the state so we won't do them chris if we aren't getting a reimbursement yeah first like summer ag mostly the secondary level stuff we don't india online it doesn't india online doesn't really matter because that's handled a little bit differently through the state um but like the edmonton and the ag and driver's ed does not impact us as well um but our goal is to have enough students to make sure that these programs can operate but in the past there's been times where we haven't had enough and i had to not offer it does it hurt them to have kids try and graduate early by doing some of this they don't necessarily graduate early that's not really the encouragement or the focus there more of it is to fill in gaps that maybe we don't offer or they get a schedule that's really tight and they may need to take a class online to be able to get the classes that we offer especially if they may go to an internship or do something like that just to fill those gaps would like that and then that way we can start opening up and looking for stacking for these positions you have not gotten any ideas you can fill all that we did it last year that was way bigger i mean last year we went all the way up to sixth grade and so we're only going up to third grade so i would hope that staffing would not be an issue i've already had teachers ask no grant money for that day is that a lot of that so what we'll do is we'll get reimbursed from the state and then we'll supplement anything through some work should be cost neutral for the district yeah and teachers don't like to get up there somewhere but elementary teachers just love their kids so much and they can tell you they can tell you like high school teen let me tell you the high school elementary teachers like they all understand just the power of that extra month with some of those kids and they are more than happy to try to work with them um and so i we won't have yeah i don't think we'll have much trouble filling those positions and in the past financially typically it used to be that the state would actually reimburse us 100 or more but because the budgets are smaller and because more people are doing it it's not as much so technically it reinverse about 60 but three or four years ago it was over a hundred percent yeah it was probably over that but when i first started doing it it was over a hundred percent so but yeah but you got more people they never changed the budget as far as the appropriations so you got more people doing summer school it's just taking that away so we get about 60 percent back but it's still important to do it it is it'll be cost neutral this year and for hopefully another year to end we'll make the motion for the summer school that's presented so again we will shoot in a second to approve the summer school course descriptions all right exciting my new business recommendation to approve the southwood senior trip to pigeon forge tennessee april 24th to 27th of to approve the southwood senior trip depiction forward all three percent we have no unfinished business or work policy public comment we're going to five years now obviously all right any items from board members on those larger grant dollars early on we have employees now that are just aside from that instead all right so i guess that means we're adjourned

and um she said katie you know there are some things i think that you could use for bay but i want to tell you that there are all these toys down in the basement of um of the of the old youth services building it used to belong to operation elf could you use them and at the time we were like uh you know i don't know how we could use them but okay we'll go ahead and we'll take them and um one thing led to another and we found out that there was there was a need this was in november we found out that there was a need for christmas presents and so that's how the whole thing got started so we distributed those toys and like i said we went ahead and we did it again this year so these guys came we had several people we had um people from bachelor creek people from i mean just several people come together but what made this group so special is that they came to help set up they came during the toy drive which i want to talk about that here in just a second and then it came afterwards um so the toy drive the the the week of oh my gosh which is the three three days three days it's a three-day event and it's right before christmas so this is what happened this year um we set up and i guess we didn't quite know what to expect we were basing it off of what had happened the year before and the year before we served about 400 children and so that's what we were kind of expecting this year too um and so we i should say also mentioned that we received our toys from toys from toys and christmas spirit as well as several other organizations and i won't go christmas extra they're extraordinary they're extra toys yes i shouldn't say that they they went out and bought toys they're extra extra stuff um so the week of that or that first day when we showed up to um open up the toy distribution there was a line of people that stretched all the way down miami street i mean all the way down to the railroad tracks i should say i mean it wasn't mmi on the street it's a very long stream but um from our front doors all the way down to the river tracks and it was freezing cold i don't know if you remember anything about the weather in december but it was fairly warm in december all the way up until the week of christmas and it was freezing that day freezing and we just didn't have the space in babe for people to come in um sign up register and then stay where it was warm they would have to come in they'd register and then i had to go outside where it was cold because we couldn't allow everybody to go shopping all at once we stopped the space and covet is definitely an issue and so we um so people were standing outside and they were freezing and because we had so many people show up that day and we weren't prepared for it i mean we were calling people asking like we please come in and help just you know i mean just and people dropped what they were doing that day and they came in and they helped us we served more children on that first day than we did on all four days of the year before so the second day comes and we're thinking all right this is the slow day right because last year that was a slow day and again we show up and there is a line of people and we're like okay and again we're not prepared for this because this is not what happened last year i mean we were we met several times over through the summer and fall we did not anticipate this kind of a need and so um so we're we're running things and my husband's in the back room and he's the guy who's stuck in the shelves and everything and at some point i break away and he looks at just to check on him and he said to me you call people right now because i cannot keep the toys stopped he said as soon as i put things on the shelf they are taking it because they are taking stuff out of my arms he's like i mean it wasn't like they were being rude it was just that there was just they were just coming and you know and it was it was just awesome and so again we called people and they came and they helped and so later on that afternoon i get a phone call from toys for tots and they said katie um you are the only site toy site that is open in eight surrounding counties they said will you please consider opening your doors to more than just wabash and miami county and we will provide toys for you and i said yeah yes of course because when you're in that situation and you're seeing these families come in and the stories that you're hearing of you know and just and the gratitude i mean it is it is a really special event to be a part of i i can't quite describe it you know and just to know when people are like thank you because i didn't know what i was going to do if you weren't open so yes we're like yeah we're gonna we're gonna open up our doors and so those those soldiers went out and they spent thousands of dollars on toys and they brought us uh all the toys in an army utility truck and it was so impressive and so cool to see and they pulled this truck up uh in the alley of babe and by that time we had thankfully we had all these volunteers there so they're now unloading it and there were so many toys that we couldn't find spaces in bay to put to fill all of these toy to put all these toys and we have a rental space and so we had actually open up and i hope that he's not listening because we had to open up his rental space just to store all of these toys and i mean the blessings just poured out and we just knew that god was providing for us and it was just you know it was incredible and so um my daughter aubry she's she's a junior at wabash um she had been there the whole time and she was observing this and she said to me you know mom you know as i'm looking at these toys i'm thinking this is a sign i mean and i know this is this is a very obvious sign but we're just all in this mode of just keep going forward keep moving she said i think that god is telling us the people are going to come and we have people lined up the first day people end up the second day she goes we need to be prepared for that third day you know because we know we're not and i'm like yeah i mean this is my 17 year old you know and i'm like yes thank you you're right so i call roger he's the guy the first guy i just thought of and i'm like roger i need help i'm adding you know i'm like this is what's going on you know people are coming and they're standing outside and they're freezing and i'm talking some of these people don't have coats some of these people are bringing their kids not supposed to bring their kids and their kids don't have to go we have we have split coats we have all this stuff so we're trying to offer these to these people but like i said they don't get they don't they just the need this is this is the fact of what we're what people have and some of the people that a lot of us have what they don't have and but i said we can't allow people to continue to stand outside and he said i'm on it and he called so his church is the wabash christian church which is our neighbor right across the street to call the pastor and by that evening he had it set up that when people would come over and register they would be able to go right over to the church and they would have a warm place to sit and stay uh until their number was called and they could come in and go shopping i know because that that just goes to show how amazing because we didn't ask for anything he took it one step further and instead of just offering a place to stay he's bringing coffee and donuts and volunteers and a lot of these kids and they were there that third day and they were helping us communicate so that way we could you know get shoppers in and out they're carrying stuff for people they're watching kids because again kids i guess i didn't say this kids are not supposed to be coming to the toy drive but some people don't have child care you know some people have special needs kids and they don't have child care who can take care of their special needs children and so these guys are helping with all of that and i mean it was just it was amazing and they just filled in where we needed them to fill in and and then roger said you know i mean if you can imagine after three days of all of this how the whole place look and um three days and i should say i forgot to mention by the time that we were done was the toy drive we had served 834 children it was double what we served last year 834 children and so you can imagine then what the place will look like we literally we were so tired dave it was the day before christmas day we just dropped what we were doing and we just left and so but rogers before that roger said hey i'm going to get together a group of students and we're going to come in here we're going to help you clean i mean and that was like that was i can't even describe how awesome that was because i didn't know how it was going to do that obviously it took us days to set the weeks we had work days work days on how to set this whole thing up i didn't know how i was going to get this whole thing clean so uh the first week that you guys were back in school uh kids came on tuesday and they i mean these kids were amazing they're like machines and they just i said look this is what we need to do they looked at that list and they just all found their place and they just sprung into action kids were putting things away kids were clean and kids were cleaning our bathrooms right i know it was awesome they were breaking things down and then they're taking stuff over and the christian church is storing all of our toys for us and so they're taking stuff across the street we broke down everything and put it away and cleaned it in a matter of couple several hours and nobody i mean there wasn't a lazy bone in this group they all work they all pulled their way and they all did an amazing job i don't know what obviously i just don't know what i would have done without them and so i just think that you guys need to appreciate that katie janet you want to mention anything or pat or mr votel or i just thank mr snyder because i i knew she needed help and i said let me see what mr snyder will allow us to do and he put he he responded quickly before we left that day i said i'm going to come down here and help you i figured i'd get the kids to come that muscle well it's great to have the students get involved in community service and appreciate them i think like we put on the agenda we have students from the key club because mr votel is a key club sponsor also from national honor society because he's the national honor society you're gonna coach something next year so anyway why don't we have the students just introduce themselves and just tell us what uh what what grade you're in and and maybe what club you're in or if you're in both of those or how you got involved in this so i'm kyle nguyen i'm a senior and i'm in vogue national ocean i'm tori graft i'm an eleventh grader and i'm in keep from i'm auckland style i'm a junior and i'm in some i'm natalie keller i'm a junior and i'm in both key club and national honor society um i'm avery schreider i'm in key club and national honor society i'm willie hobbs i'm a junior [Music] again we appreciate you guys coming and we can thank mrs uh kate hill for you know she said man we'd love to be able to recognize these i know you might be a little tired this is your first day back after our winter so it was unplanned but we've had it so let's give it one more round before okay one of the things that i i noticed in all of this is just how much these guys love their teacher and i think that speaks volumes about mr bowtal and how he is with these kids and i mean just i'm an i'm an outsider i mean i know roger wow you know how awesome i mean just you know it just speaks volumes of what you are to these kids and you know just as a community just a just a community person being able to see that and and how they how they talk to you and how they're always like mr hotel look at this on you know and and just you know including you and i mean you can just really tell how much you mean to these kids and all the stuff that you're doing it's gonna make me cry thank you thank you for all you're doing yeah we definitely appreciate mr vocal thanks again for coming so can we hand out our goodies okay go ahead them i believe that is it and i need one minute because i did not get my sack that's in this other room run run and see if [Music] or something so all right our main event tonight we were going to have mrs amy wong come up here and that vegan so first of all we we do want to congratulate our spotlight tonight as listed in our agenda is amy long and beth nominated her so i would turn it over at this time to miss thank you at the beginning of the school year we were one office secretary short and amy wore many many hats at the beginning of the year not only was she a school secretary and school nurse she took care of attendance and many many other things and she always had a smile on her face when she was doing it she is always happy she's always had a smile on her face i'm sure there are times when she's not happy but her daughter's not on the camera right now she's always willing to go the extra mile to help someone out and i can speak her personal experience um to that she has been a cheerleader for me as i have continued my recovery from cancer and she she's just always willing to do whatever anybody needs a couple of weeks ago i on a personal note i had was coming back from fort wayne i had a treatment in fort wayne on a monday and i always come back from my mom's on tuesday morning and as i went out to the car on tuesday morning i fell on the ice and so i contacted mr mcdaniel let me know it's going to be a little bit late and when i got to school i pulled up and amy came out and she was like do not get out of the car and she assessed to make sure that i was really okay but in the meantime kids are coming into school and she is being a cheerleader for them saying welcome to southwood come on in let's get that learning going and so not only was she there to help me she was welcoming the kids to the school that morning and that's just what we see out of amy every single day she is always always always there for us and i just wanted the opportunity to recognize her and thank her for everything she does we are definitely honored and privileged to have amy as a member of the soccer field [Music] i just love my job and it's we're in a very unique situation we've never had this i don't think in our history of msd over the last 60 some homeless well over 60 years of having a secretary slash nurse so like miss egan says she can do it all there during that time so we appreciate that mr mcdaniel do you want to share anything else yeah you know we got to know amy um in years past as a substitute nurse and we knew her as somebody who was spunky and fun and and just an all-around great person and so this year uh like that said she's done so many different things to help out uh she's meticulous she has an excellent work as they just gets through things and she's just fun to be around and so we are very very blessed thank you so on behalf of msd and our sponsor which is first farmers bank and trust we have a little gift for you um but we do always ask that you read it out loud because i'll have another thing i want to say real fast okay congratulations because you have dreams big and worked hard we figured you might like a soft place to rest thank you for doing what you do so well staff spotlight so inside there yeah um mr mcdaniel though we need to make sure he understands that that's not necessarily for school time so all right that's pretty nice yeah i'll have to hide it from him yeah thank you very much um before you [Music] um all right you guys can stay if you want but obviously you can leave just like i said in the email so we'll see you later thank you very much thanks for coming thank you yeah all right i actually said 6 45 so i don't know they're just real early yeah so um [Music] oh so we'll move to the consent agenda items uh approval of the minutes from our previous meeting on january clinton i'm listening claims to accept claims on favor say all all right payroll nothing out of the ordinary for payroll motion second motion in a second for to approve payroll financial summary just uh showing you uh end of the month for january and where our balances are you can see where we ended in that first column uh of 2012 or 2012 uh and then so where we're at how that balance changed just over that first month period um next board mean i'll have some cash flow uh updates and uh estimates uh for the remainder of 2022.

to approve the minutes of the last meetings all in favor say aye okay claims page two chris york trace holdings limited yes so yeah there's another repair it's a uh it's a program that aaron is using for a cyber security purposes to help prevent some of those types of issues and maybe be able to trace some of that stuff to different devices so that it can get mixed in the bud before it creates a problem is there like a buy-in or that's a yearly like like can we do it next year i believe so he said it wasn't a cheap service be attached to all the devices but it won't impact the day that they use them okay now the kids are gonna even know that anything's happening i had another one too since this is my first meeting page five office rental for 12 000 that's going out to that is area programmers feeding to us so it shows on here because yeah which really you know a nice round i was probably more honest than if somebody was trying to get away with something yeah because they make it a little bit like this is a real effort yeah but that happens from time to time where they a claim will come out for them but will go to us as a revenue of some sort so that's really money that's going to go into a different account it's going into our yeah building it's coming out of the special ed grant that area program manages and then it comes to us and that one probably goes into our operations and double check on that thank you approved claims all in favor say hi payroll first payroll in january reflective one under employment sally weitzel for athletic secretary at southwood uh tim merkel custodian at northville high school retirement pam campbell teacher sharp creep belt laundry what she's gonna be using uh transfer howard goshert transferring from custodian to head custodian at sharp creek elementary and leave there are two numbers there 134 135 and you see the dates for those you know if i can just mention a little bit more um mrs campbell at sharp creek been doing a great job very energetic actually volunteers for a lot of different things still now today i just noticed that you know i get all the emails from different schools and sometimes they need help doing different things like taking tickets at ball games and different things like that and she's always willing to do that and and uh is just a good advocate for students and for shark creek and for msd and so she will definitely like you said mr daisy would definitely be missed but um wish her well in her retirement all my kids knew metro north when she was there i'll move to a preview into our sleep motion a second to approve hr all in favor say hi heartland career center report right you got anything of course nothing much they're just still working out details on the building that's what it's saying right now did you get elected yeah i just want to share a little bit and we'll we'll do some more of this later when we do some more of the data that the indian always provides us with a indiana transfer report and a lot of times you know we look at students that leave our district and students come into our district and we a lot of times just focus on those eight districts that we touch and since we are a large corporation we do touch like i said eight different districts and so we net we netted 102 students um as far as the number of students that that actually we lost in the number of students that gained so we did gain 102 that is just through only those neighboring school corporations and so but our total net through the all of state of indiana with all of our programs that we have is 309 students and so it's interesting to note that 1716 students are in our district that live in our district um and so if we went back to the non-open enrollment those are the only students that we could choose from but now we can choose from any students in the state of indiana so again uh 309 students it's also interesting to note that in wabash county um all of wabash county there's only 4 590 students um in the whole county which is kind of interesting because that's way down from you know the heyday of all the different school districts just because we don't have as much population so it's just interesting to know but it's great news to know that um you know students are choosing and parents are choosing msd and we have a net gain of 309 total and then compared to the 102 uh with just our neighboring districts so just a good celebration there the report is very very interesting because it shows every school district in the state of indiana also the non-pubs and the charter schools and it's just interesting to see where students are going here we'll see that's all public knowledge it's on the oe website but education was in a non-public school you had that one category there right so in other words like charter schools we had 11 students that left us to charter school we had approximately 19 for non-public for example we have 15 students that are going that live in our district that go the same beats right now so that's pretty common and there's some other ones uh oh they call them the um the others there's a few others that we have on there and that's basically ordered out of our district to someplace else so kind of like with fort worth it's interesting you know every student now has a number and so everything is tracked and that's how we get that information every student i think if i could energetic dairy students [Music] it's very confidential i mean those numbers cannot be shared and things like that [Music] they're long numbers you know he's going to memorize all of them all right that's all i have okay thank you mr defender mr drake is not here so i assume nobody's going to be doing any greater than my work in his absence so we'll move on to new business first item under this a new business is a recommendation to improve the purchase of the new buses yeah we typically this time of year we purchase the new businesses that are needed so that we can have them for the start of the school year well we found out that the estimated delivery time of these buses are about a year out so um here we still need to get them ordered so that we can have some new updated buses uh to replace some of the ones that we've gotten rid of or have become spares so we went over all of this when we did our budget hearing um in regards to bus replacement plan so i just threw that up there just to kind of show you where we're at with our number of buses and we're just looking uh to replace uh purchase two yellow regular buses which are at a hundred thousand a piece which is up seven thousand dollars a piece from last year we've been going with the thomas buses kyle likes likes those and so um yes the recommendation would be to purchase two thomas buses at a price of two hundred thousand five hundred thirty dollars it is interesting to note though i know dr kuhn looks at projections i don't know if that's a five percent in increasing four percentage at the top therefore yeah so in 20 20 33 if that is correct there will be up to 154 000 of these just to let you know wow what's it what's your news they say it's after 12 years you have to get two inspections so 12 is the typical standard i mean you can do the 12.

thank you all very much okay like to ask our top 10 seniors to step outside and we would like to get a photo outside uh by the water area everybody is certainly welcome to stay for as long as you wish for the meeting but also feel free to do whatever you choose a nice evening um all right next on our agenda's opportunity for colleagues to offer board commendations so i'll turn to you all i stay off dwyer yes i'd like to offer accommodations to the columbus north unified track team last wednesday they competed against floyd central and i think it was uh franklin central and uh for them having a new coach and being a small team but being mighty uh they actually won their first meet it was a homemade so it made it even sweeter so congratulations to them very good absolutely that's exciting others really yeah i'm shocked so you know in between in between board meetings i i always make a real conscious effort to keep my eyes and ears open for all good things bcsc and for whatever reason between our last board meeting and this one um i just couldn't keep up and so um i don't know if it's this time of year or what it is but you know from all that i read the newspaper here on the radio reading the bcsc newsletters you know hear from people out in public i think um it's real easy probably to fall in a pattern of taking things for granted but you know i can honestly sincerely say i have a lot of friends and acquaintances across the state in various districts and i i would have serious doubt that um you know many of them could you know find as many student and staff accomplishments as what exists here in bcsc i think it's uh you know there are a lot of special things here that oftentimes unfortunately probably do get taken for granted or overlooked so with that said i'm going to go through quickly here a few and we'll keep the academic theme going um first fourth grader from richards uh simeksha singh who won a regional essay contest put on by the association of indiana county celebrate your county's history congratulations to her columbus north senior matthew lu who we've already heard about first in the indiana math league state competition as an individual and the math league team at north for finishing second overall in the state as a team the south side math team coached by mrs keel in their state competition got 31 of 32 correct and earned the state title in the large school division um in the math bowl competition and mrs kiel said that very proud of the kids it's uh it's oftentimes a very spirited and often very intense competition and she's always told the children that it's truly never been about the competition but it's about the collaboration and teamwork built through practice and when she said that it kind of made me think of the new tagline together we learned just a few more congrats to the academic super bowl teams at north and east fine arts team at east the math science teams at north that are headed to state championship may 7th at purdue um hard not to mention the bcsc robotics team uh 49-26 nicknamed galactic uh which won the indiana state championship last uh april 5th or well april 15 16 at rose holman and recently competed in international competition in houston which i hear will be uh in the newspaper tomorrow um commendations to all that bcsc staff who had a hand in developing the professional development for staff on april 14th uh it looked like all kinds of good topics a good variety very relevant topics for uh teachers to pick from and i'm sure you know very worthwhile that day um heard recently from um allison stidham who was the virtual pathway teacher of the year who received a grant from the heritage fund for math and science initiative for elementary teachers and she shared a little bit about some monthly steam events that they are doing at cvp for kindergarten first second third fourth fifth graders that's held in person at the cvp building and their latest one was april showers where they learned about the water cycle clouds and rain and so uh yeah you know the cvp important to know that you know it's not all virtual those kids are coming in and having some experiences with their peers as well and then um cassidy duel who was a richards teacher of the year says that at richards the pbis team had just recently implemented a citizen of the week throughout their school community and at the end of the week a student from each class has chosen the citizen of the week based on their emphasized trait for that week and mrs duell says it's encouraged a great culture across the school where students are able to relate to each other and celebrate one another in their strengths so again i know these accomplishments are you know they're just a drop in the bucket of what is really um going on so thanks thanks to all the students and staff and all the good things they do on a daily basis uh behind the scenes to make bcsc such a good place to learn thank you great thank you and we do appreciate that you bring all of that to us all right no one has signed up for public comments we are trucking on next is our school board member reports we'll turn to colleagues if you've been to committees need to report mr grimes so a lot of things going on with the school foundation angie emmett community development coordinator her last day was on april 22nd uh angie did a lot and will be sorely missed and whoever fills her shoes will will have their work cut out for them so good luck to angie and and thank you for the time that you were on board and i she will stay on as a board member uh the executive director nicole cunningham uh this is scholarship season bcsf um manages just over 20 scholarships and is in the thick of sorting those scholarships out and then last chance to plug the good better best uh 5k coming up this saturday fingers crossed for good weather um but uh the good better best in honor of my dad chuck and and mr wallace who's probably my favorite teacher of all time um and the winner of that award will be recognized prior to the race and it's public now so jenna flannery second grade teacher at csa fadria was selected by the committee as a winner and she will be recognized just prior to the start of the race um and again 17 nominees for that from 13 buildings all of them have been notified that they were nominated so again saturday april 30th the forecast looks okay i think rain later in the day hopefully that's the case lots of door prizes and uh should be very good thank you great great thank you are there other reports yeah for the redevelopment commission i'll say that you might see in the newspaper that the second street grocer urban location groundbreaking was last week so that's very exciting i think that'll be a good addition to downtown um i also just want to mention in the read and you know we talk a lot about downtown businesses and stuff i think since um some offices have come back since the playground is now open again in the comments if you haven't been there that's quite impressive they did a nice job obviously but businesses and patrons are starting to come back to downtown and that's pretty exciting i know a lot of a lot of the business owners down there like to see that so spend your money locally and support support them and you may have seen i think in the papers over the weekend perhaps that that there's somebody looking to take over orange julius in the comments which i think would be awesome because i like my ice cream and um and then last but not least i will say again bricks are still for sale people for the new sidewalk okay so great way to make yourself a permanent place here in columbus right on the redevelopment commission's website thank you all right thank you miss wilden i will move on to cabinet reports and dr roberts we have the first reading of a policy and a internal complaint policy yeah so you have two policies in your packets uh just as a first reading and so a reminder in terms of policies we first introduce them to you for your review and consideration no no approval and then the next meeting we would actually ask for your approval for those revisions or additions of policies to become uh actual policies for bcsc the first one is revision uh so neola policy 4434 a reminder of niola that is the the group that we work with to stay on top of statute and other case law that occurs across the country that might dictate some of the changes we need to make but this particular one really nothing changed except there was a federal holiday uh that created or wrecked is now being recognized in june called juneteenth and so for our 12-month employees we are looking to add that to our list of paid holidays so 44-34 is a list of paid holidays labor day through independence day in terms of getting how our school year would work and we would add in the next to last one in that school year uh time frame uh juneteenth so just asking for your consideration for that um and then the second policy that we have here and that is the only revision to that that policy 4434 is an internal complaint policy what we have recognized is with the complaint policy that we currently have um that that applies for the public at large um and really is any topic possible uh there is a process of of uh following up in regards to an issue a challenge and moving through the system and then even a formal way to get engaged in that and as we have an employee circumstance or situation it just didn't seem to apply and so we have uh created an addition to the original complaint policy we have to to have one that is called employee complaints and concerns and you see that in uh with the document that you have in front of you it talks about the procedures of moving from an informal resolution to an escalation to the human resources department and then eventually an appeal of the decision of the human resources department if that seems necessary or or is appropriate so um we do note in the policy that it does not replace employees duty to report suspected abuse neglect of a child other complaints of unlawful discrimination harassment sexual harassment those kinds of things or anything else that's covered by statute or by contract law but we believe this is a a way to uh acknowledge uh recognize those employee complaints uh in a formal way and then to walk through people through the process if something arises and our again our other policy just didn't seem to work well when we're talking about internal circumstances situations so this policy we believe will do that for us so we're asking for your consideration of that all right are there questions individuals have about what was presented i have one sure um it's on the second one first reading internal complaint has there been any thought given to um if if there's a there's no resolution outside mediations for a couple of for internal complaints like between employer or supervisor and their employee just i know some places do that yeah wondering if that would be a possibility especially if there's some you know especially if there's some i don't know if the person isn't comfortable going to their supervisor and following the chain of command because maybe that's the issue so sure yeah thought or suggestion or think about so you say yes i think dr biltz um certainly there are times when a situation may arise where the circumstances involve the individual and and the supervisor or the direct report and and that that chain of command and so we believe this policy uh recognizes that and allows that um moving up uh with that next person the next involved in the next conversation to then then move through that and believe that that next involvement of the human resources department if that's necessary because the informal resolution mediation conversation couldn't get us to where we would like to be that that hopefully would do it and then leaves us with that final appeal that uh is available and then you know after that situation if if the appeal of the decision is still not to the status not to the satisfaction of the employee then it does provide opportunities to i guess move to the next level as it would in our other complaint policy whether there are opportunities to take it outside the system okay i just didn't know if there would be a point where that would be an option i mean just because i think it's a good idea to mediate if there's hard feelings or if there's i don't know you know whatever the situation is um to have an objective person come in and try to resolve that conflict yes i know that's something to think about but yeah thanks and we'll look to see if this wording can add something like that and we have had some circumstances where we have engaged um others um outside of the organization to come in and have a dialogue to see if that can could help move some things happen every time that might be another option yeah thank you are there other questions on these two proposals thank you for that doctor you're welcome and again just a reminder first reading we would be bringing these back to you with perhaps some adjustments as we review some of the questions or comments you have don't hesitate to reach back out to me individually after this if you still have some thoughts and then we'll bring the final version to you at the next board meeting which is may 9th all right it's time for our first quarter financial report here he comes good evening this will be brief i only came up even because i did i felt bad sitting talking behind you all on that side of the room so um a pretty quick and brief overview of the first quarter no large variances or um things that stand out uh compared to what we would expect uh for the first quarter financially um the education fund revenues are up about 6.8 which is exactly what we would expect with the increase in adm and state tuition report operations fund we don't receive operations fund or operating referendum fund dollars from the county until the tax draw here in may and june so next quarter those will catch up on the expenditure side education fund expenditures um the only real notable variance here and it's going to probably stand out to some of you if you look closely enough salaries and benefits are down in 2022 compared to 2021 but we gave raises so how does that even make sense well there's two big reasons for it in 21 in the first quarter we paid both coved stipends for additional work performed for the prior semester to every support staff member and every teacher and we paid an extra day of uh teacher contract pay to every teacher who worked on january 4th as an extra day to prepare coming back from um transitioning from remote and those kinds of things so that's one factor those all those stipends were paid in 21 and then not paid in 22 obviously the other factor is there uh where three pays in january of 21 for us and not this year eventually as the year goes on we catch up with those three pay months but that was just a difference between the two years so other than that it's exactly what we would expect on the operations expenditure side pretty much exactly what we would expect for the year um on the operation operating referendum side again the same exactly as we would expect and consistent with where we were at this time last year just a little bit ahead fund balances this is the the place that probably stands out as looking a little bit um unusual there's some wide variances the reasons for this are um first education fund side it's about two million dollars that we spend from the education fund in a payroll so the difference between one year and the next is about two million dollars so we'll catch up with that again when we have our next three pay month the operations fund is down about 4.2 million compared to 2021.

meeting minutes from march 8th all in favor say that all right claims yeah what's this 41 000 [Music] the new one that's has has always been switching over from the projectors once they die out and phase them out um but we had some gear moving over that we needed to spin on a time frame so we went ahead and bought those to start replacing a little bit more in the classrooms elementary water type from 2017 phase six quality electric yeah was that just the late building yeah we had to do something no that was really good really yeah and it was brought to steed they were talking about it with quality electric for our metro north project and then for some reason he's like i don't think i ever built you guys and so we did hey [Music] i just went ahead and gave you the cash flow for education operation fund [Music] for january and february actuals and then the rest are just the the estimates and then i put down at the bottom what those estimates reflect or do not reflect at this point in time we should be seeing what our basic grant revenue is from the february 80 m count here within the next month or so and then i also have to in the next by the end of next week give our july estimate estimated adm counts which then would determine the monies that we would receive from july to december that would get reconciled once the february september count came this fall so um some of those numbers will start to be shifting a little bit and then working on a proposal for uh classified uh and admin raises uh for this spring for next school year and so start to plug in some of those numbers and figures in there to get a kind of idea of uh our expectations i guess for the end of the year i didn't read the very bottom and so these are plugged in there a little bit none of those have been plugged in at this point in time those are just based off of trends right now so and then give you the similar type of information for the operations fund so nothing to improve there just all right we'll move on to personnel under resignation we have phil boone principal southwood elementary school effective at the end of the school year uh teacher ryan mcfarland at northfield high school effective at the end of the school year uh linda miracle cook at high school under employment we have morgan walker social worker at sharp creek elementary uh assistant baseball coaches jim sparks and peyton peter and those are both volunteer positions at southwest high school junior high track patricia oswalt sarah adaman kyle aderman and michelle rice and kyle oswald with all junior high track at northfield kyle adaman and connor oswald are volunteer and then under retirement we have nancy mccauley bus aiden north and south and then under lee we have employee number 137 and you see the dates there for that and i'd like to uh just mention nancy appreciate what she's done over the last several years to to be a bus aide um and driving all of those miles uh with the bus to be able to help with those students and also thank mr boone um typically we'll talk a lot about resignations more retirement but um uh when he was hired he wasn't employed by the university of walrush county and so we uh we were looking at maybe just a one year position and it's been six years already it's amazing how fast it's going so he has other things that that he will be doing but we appreciate his service to msd of walmart i moved accepted [Music] excuse me uh heartland career center report yeah i'll give you a little update the county commissioners on the building grant hired a consultant to help us and everybody kind of work together and try to keep everything on track and hopefully that will work out that we can all see the same way and be in compliance and all that so that's still in the process um last time i told you we got an offer from going center for some of the ground it took all of a day to withdraw that and completely get out of it but whatever so so that's off the table uh debbie grindel i don't know if you guys have ever been in there she's been there 40 plus years and she's going to retire this year she's you know as about as long as i've been around there man she's just been a staple there so that's gonna be kind of tough replacing her and then mr key favor gave a presentation on trying to amend the funding process down there so and with that process we'll have to go through the schools each school board will have to approve that so that we're started in that process so i let him take all the arrows [Laughter] yeah i just want to mention uh you know legislation session ended earlier this month there were actually 18 house bills and 17 senate bills for education we're not going to go over all those tonight but just a couple first of all the school board this is kind of directly related to the school board but house bill 13 i'm 11 30 and senate bill 83 which talks about open meetings but the nice thing about it is we are actually doing that and even more and so we don't have to make really a lot of changes but but in house bill 13 11 30 it says requires a governing body of the school corporation school board to allow each member of the public attending a meeting attendee the opportunity to provide oral public comment allows the school board to permit oral public comment at a public meeting that is conducted electronically during a state or local disaster emergency so luckily you know we're not in that public health emergency right now and so we'll have to change ours a little bit because we don't need to do everything that we're doing right now but we still will allow for public comment prior to um you know people are here prior to uh our items because that's part of the senate bill part of the senate bill says that you have to allow for public comment prior to that's being voted on it's interesting the house bill does not say that so it'd be interesting to think about okay why would you have public comment if the school board already voted on something and so the senate bill does say that but not the house bill and so just wanted to let you know about that we might change some of the wording that we have on some of this but the most part we're already in compliance with that so we want to begin differently for any of those people that have kids in college right now or going to be in college um house bill 1045 increases the tax credits for the 529 college savings accounts did not know if you knew that but i think it's from uh 20 uh oh i just lost the number well it was if you put 50 000.

so um nothing out of ordinary with with the end of the month report moving on to personnel under resignation we have melissa cardwell cook at metro north under employment we have deborah saint-claire long-term sub of whites cynthia barman long-term sub teacher at southwood elementary and matthew schmidt long-term sub teacher at southwest elementary and termination number employee number uh effective uh last month just maybe a little more explanation on the long-term subs uh long stitch teachers uh something's in the water this year or about nine months ago so that's why we have several long-term substitutes so okay i think we've had yeah we're going on seven returning yeah we just heard of another one too is this have you kind of the one that we just heard about number one yes i just want to share i don't know look at that so then multiple times okay um i just want to share we haven't had a cover 19 update which i'm not really going to mention that as much because we don't have a lot to share with that which is very good but i wanted to have i asked the principals uh to give attendance for today um since we've been out of school for a while and uh of the six schools we had edu seven educational staff that were absent all day um that would be you have to think about how many teachers that we have and how many staff when we say educational that doesn't include our obviously our bus drivers and our tech and our you know cooks and custodians and food service things like that but it does the educational staff of even at whites and also with the instructional paraprofessionals and teachers so anyway um really good um not very many at all for the whole corporation and then of the five schools did not include whites in this one but i did have the principles respond we had 106 students that were absent all day so out of um the students that are in that those five schools that's a tenancy rate of 94 if we would have a 94 of the year it would almost probably be a four-star um for the whole uh whole state because that's that's a very good percentage and so um maybe not a four star because actually a four star would be closer to probably 97 98 but still with all of other situations happening that's very good so i guess i just want to say that's a positive for us and hopefully i hope it continues so just kind of want to share that and i asked the principals just to let me know by the end of the day what that was tonight mr craig is gone are you putting out fellaini i would just tell you one one thing that um we were last year at this time we brought in nwa scores but we just had those finished so next meeting i'm sure he'll have a report on that um he's excused him to go watch the sun playing the rc tournament uh starts tonight um hopefully it will not be their last game but they're playing a very good team and they have a good record too so i excuse him from tonight too so you could watch him play and so there's nothing on that but there should be something about our nwa test scores next meeting which our next meeting is interesting it's 2 22 only two [Music] okay moving on to recommendation a new business we have a recommendation to approve the out of state field trip from northfield high school's acapella choir and trouble choir to the choir festival music of the parks at king's island amusement park in ohio on may 13th and 14th of this year motion second to approve the out-of-state field trip for the northfield choirs always ever say all right all right recommendation to approve an extended field trip for the northfield key club to the key club district leadership convention at the indianapolis airport crown plaza march 4th through 6th of 2022 hello motion and second to approve the recommendation to approve the extended field trip for the northville key club all in favor say all right recommendation to approve the overnight extended field trip for sharp creek sixth grade to camp mullen hour in shark excuse me in silver lake indiana may 18th the 20th this year i got ahead of myself i'm trying to get to that pizza to approve the overnight extended field trip for sharp cream later this year in may all in favor say hi we have no unfinished business no board policy about uh phones public comment on any item there's nothing nothing okay any items from board members that are something they've got to line up but okay so that's
