give these kids some room so yeah and um mrs wood and dr mccord and people in the audience i can't join you down there i'm dealing with some medical issues and i have to be very careful that i want to congratulate all of the students that are here tonight good evening again everyone uh this is a time of year when a lot of things are wrapped up at schools and recognitions are given in a lot of different ways we'll have some recognitions tonight of course in our last meeting we'll have in may we'll have some more recognitions so tonight we want to start off with our oratorical contest winners we have three of them from three different levels from k through second we have brigham jepson third through six oliver campos and from the seventh through eighth division oceana anders and um tonight you guys are in for a treat they're going to give their speech that they delivered at the contest and i got to see this and it was extremely well done thank you to dr coleman who always puts it together how many years a lot just say a lot it's been a lot of years and it's always enjoyable so we will start off and with the big round of applause mr brigham jepson from boulder creek he is going to be dr seuss [Applause] this leggings he's dead is what wait um thank you later difference here [Applause] one more time [Applause] next we have mr oliver campos from spectrum he's going to be [Applause] [Music] one more time just for all come on [Music] and last but not least of our winners it is oceana anders greenfield junior high student and she is american photographer margaret burke white come on up [Applause] i was a pioneering female for both fortune and life magazine but let's start from the beginning i was joined margaret white on june 14 1904 in the bronx mainly grew up in an older brownsville many times graduated me a 1979 take pictures to go to life pictures of people subject hmm hours before his association i will be remembered as a famous photographer who did anything to get the show even if people don't know my name board members yep [Music] congratulations [Applause] once again thank you to our oratorical contest winners you guys are fantastic so congratulations again next we'd like to recognize a group of students from augusta ranch elementary terry barnes as the principal of augusta ranch we come up here real quick while i kind of read about what you do with these young men and women ladies and gentlemen terry barnes principal of augusta ranch elementary so this is the augusta ranch principles academy for students in fifth and sixth grade here's what that is the principal's academy mission is to help and serve others 76 students came together each month for lunch training and then an hour of community service after school students show dedication and leadership in helping others in our community projects included making over a hundred toys over 50 blankets for the friends for life animal shelter and collecting over four thousand pounds of food for a food drive and making over 260 detergent bags for ronald mcdonald house they also made valentine cards for the elderly in partnership with the mesa public library ladies and gentlemen here are some of our representatives from augusta ranch if you guys could come up i'll let you introduce your kids well i didn't want to say i'm the proud principal of augusta ranch but i am even more proud of principals academy so each month as we came together to do our service they out-did each other the next month so when we set our goals they you know bypassed it and went way past it each time so for example when we did the canned food drive we said if we can just get a thousand pounds of food that's amazing so 3 500 pounds later here we are so i'm so proud of the group and not only is it giving back to the community but last week we had our final meeting and we gave out certificates and medals and we all ate a lot of cake but i asked the students i said what does principals academy mean to you what have you learned how has it impacted you and their answers were unbelievable so i had you know 76 of them to read through but the teamwork and learning the leadership and being able to have a single focus and mission that we all work towards um so i could not be more proud of this group of kids i have madeline morton and she's going to say a few words i have kyran crawford josh hanseker cam cameron cosaha dale francisco so again as we're asking kids what does it mean to you well you can hear all night from me but you really should hear from the kids so madeline what does principal academy mean to you come over here the start of principles academy i thought that um i thought that you could just get the most joy out of receiving and not like giving but i soon found out that you don't just have to receive gifts you can give and just give back to the community because what other people have done for us sometimes we need to give back to them but some people don't think about that and i'm really sad that principles academy is ending but i'm also looking forward to the many students who are going to be enjoying it further on so thanks again to a really great group of kids i know my fifth grader said don't bring me up there don't make me say anything and here you are um so we're going to go ahead and just close with the photo up i don't want to put anybody else on the spot unless you're like i want to say something you do want to say something come here okay josh meant a lot to me first of all it's because it taught me to be a real nice person also it gave me the opportunity to help people that really needed it also for next year uh the kids that are gonna do it i hope they like it and they will be giving back to the community and my favorite activity in principles academy was a dog treats because then we got to give back to the dogs and get them blankets so they would be warm in the night [Applause] you guys would shake hands with the governing board that'd be great and then stay for a photo one more time for the principal's academy from augusta ranch [Applause] okay together one more time very well done [Music] [Applause] if i could have jenny nichols bill mcdonald adam strock marcy spencer sally smith and lisa lamonica up to the front just a few are we missing anybody yeah so they're here because they represent something that we take very seriously of course in our community and that is music music education this year gilbert public schools won again is that the third third year in a row the 2022 best communities for music education award these are music teachers in our district please give them a hand the namm foundation has recognized our gilbert public schools community for the outstanding efforts of teachers administrators parents students and community leaders who are making music part of a well-rounded education for every child in their communities and jenny i would love if you would say a few words about this i know it's all right they're just like a bunch of kids um this is year 38 for me in gilbert public schools it is home and this is on behalf of our music department they are the hardest working teachers in your schools and they give and they give and they love kids and i think that's what we're all about and this award is just a recognition of something we've known my whole career that gilbert is a great place for music education thank you you can see the passion those are real tears just so you know and she does cry all the time but it's a good thing because she loves what she does she loves the kids more importantly than anything else and so to all of you thank you for your service thank you for giving back to our students our schools and our community one more time for our music educators that's one more time [Applause] madam president governing board members that concludes the recognitions for this evening [Music] oh sorry thank you thank you thank you [Music] wonderful well thank you so much that was great we now move to 4.0 the superintendent's report 4.01 i'll turn the time over to dr mccord thank you madam president governing board members [Music] i pledge allegiance to the fire of the united states of america and to the republic for righteousness one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice forever good evening i'd like to welcome everybody who is attending here in person and also for everybody who's watching in on facebook live i would like to remind you folks of tuning in on facebook live that with the cancellation of the public health emergency that governor holcomb did the requirements have changed for public comment when we get to those parts of the sec parts of the agenda and we will no longer be taking comments online if you'd like to make a comment uh during the public comment period we encourage you to show up and do that live uh when we get to that public comment we're going to be looking at the people on the road for that future board meetings may 10th and 24th here at 6 00 p.m and june 14th here at 6 p.m we have no revisions to the agenda so move right into public recognition we have a recommendation to approve a seventy dollar donation from jody and harry roger of rusty's chicken for northville high school robotics we also have a recommendation to approve a 402 dollar and fifty cent donation from jody and eric roger of rusty's chicken for sharp creek elementary we have a recommendation to approve a 500 uh donation from edward jones called northville robotics and finally we have a recommendation to approve a 250 donation from cortiva for norfolk ffa i'll move this acceptable uh donations motion and second to approve the the donations all in favor say hi all right okay school recognition all right i want to move back or go back just briefly though all of the donations of course just a reminder of everybody the reason why is because of the robotics teams that will be going to dallas texas in may um the four teams from shark creek and then one team from northfield and i will tell you that there'll be a long list of donations uh next time may 10th so that's great to hear but i just want to make sure it reminded everybody why some of those donations have been improved i guess not all of them because one was for ffa but um still trying to find that trip for the kids to be able to go for the school recognition and i also say mrs moore will be here but she's running a little late because she's at a robotics meeting right now and she texts me and i know she has some things on here but i'll go ahead and share those also but i will start off the ones that i have first of all i just want to share that the ihsaa every year sends out a 2021 in this case the 2021 annual report raising the bar and it's really really neat because i always look to see if there's any pictures or anything that has anything to do with us and they actually have a picture of the northfield girls softball team on here and it says norfolk beat the four highest ranked teams in route to their first 1a softball state championship and so just to show you that it's just pretty cool that uh we made the annual report so not every state championship team uh meets it but northfield did so congratulations again to them and also of course listed everyone would be a part of this though for softball 1a addison baker was the um mental attitude award for spring sports for for that uh for softball so from the indiana prom bureau insurance so i thought i just want to point that out that's really cool we get these each year and they made it and i know another superintendent a local superintendent also mentioned it to me after i already looked at it but other people see it and also make note of that so congratulations to them also i want to uh read an email that was given to me um a lot of times there's questions about different things but sometimes there are very very good positive things and this deals with jake snyder andrew mcdaniel and it comes to us from the community foundation walrus county from joe and case who does a lot with the 529 uh plans uh for our students it says you already know this but i wanted it well it says hi mike you already know this but i want to tell you what a pleasure it is to work with jay schneider and andrew mcdaniel over the past couple of weeks they have arranged several opportunities for consent students to complete the university of michigan survey instead of turning everything over to me a stranger to most of the students they took attendance and tracked down the missing students and they also arranged makeup times they treated the initiative like their own project and the students fell right in line my job was easy and i greatly appreciate their thoroughness and energy behind the scenes we had a couple of tech problems but they were definitely you burn your diversity of michigan problems not msd so thanks to aaron hayden also we appreciate working with you and your team for the benefit of our students have a wonderful day to join case program officer so it's always good to get those emails i probably could share more of those but i thought i'd share those uh for aaron and for jay and for andrew because they do a lot of work to help that work out jay steiner would like to share that norfolk received notification in the indian department of education on wednesday april 20 that northfield was successfully renewed their designation as a family-friendly school for the 2022-2023 school year the family-friendly schools designation focuses on addressing the academic physical emotional and social needs of students while providing the needed resources and fostering the active involvement of their families through schools and the community a thank you to mr ellsworth for working on this renewal for northfield jerusalem high school and also just a reminder that sharp creek also received that designation this year and for the first time that was a renewal and for the first time metro north elementary this is something that you have to apply to the state but also the list of various tasks that you have to complete to be able to be recognized as this designation so we appreciate them doing that um the choir saying this is also the acapella choir saying at the isma's choir organizational contest at normal high school last saturday and received a gold rating in their division a select number of eighth grade uh eighth graders was also joining the group for the performance this is the first time that a cappella choir received the isma rating since 20 2003 and we are excited to be able to bring this to norfolk once again so congratulations to mr johnston and all 14 singers we are very proud of your hard work um and this is from mrs moore so she's not here yet so i'm glad to read it for her so while sitting at the track meet on friday a staff member from charlotte creek gardens shared how amazing our little norse preschoolers were during their field trip to the gardens last week in spite of the rain and cold our preschoolers were excited and engaged and incredibly well behaved there was not a single complaint or whine about the cold and rain was that adults too okay that must be the answer right there i was also shared how engaged our teachers were with our students very short wait times preschool teachers practice rhyming counting and sorting skills i only did one of them so you got two more so no i told him while you were you were at the robotics and we talked about all the donations there and i just finished the first one talking about charlie creek gardens and how they talked about our little norse preschoolers and so i did ask the question though if there was any whining going on from the adults you said students so uh okay so you've not done about little norse enrollment for okay um so i just wanted to provide you with an update on our little norse registration we have currently a wait list for our little norse threes our little mars no our little horse threes our little ninth threes our little knights fours our little minus fours and we're this far away from having our little norse force those three classrooms at capacity as well so and we'll just continue to get more and more which is exciting we've always still had a few openings as we've headed into the summer that we've then built so um super exciting next tuesday is our little ninth open house and during that time go to the meet two of our little nights teachers but then also sign up and apply for online pre-k which if families that qualify we'll find them 100 and then um and then the other thing that i had is our elementary summer program registration for that was underway and as of 4 30 we had 128 elementary students signed up for a variety of programming 48 for half day which is academic support um 35 for a full day which is academic in the morning and then the afternoon is enrichment with ymca 23 hormones in action level one which is just staying in our community and surrounding area and then mine's in action um two we have 22 [Music] tent [Laughter] like [Music] get in or if somebody's on the wait list someone will have to cancel or not show up and then we'll invite them on let's do so don't worry but it's it is a great thing um see if i can make room for those additional kids but we there's not capacity okay all right well our next event tonight is to do the spotlight so if i could have the spotlight participants [Music] um so mrs amos actually nominated mrs meredith and so um it's great to have this team the comrades together and so i'm going to go ahead and just turn it over to the same as to share a little bit about what you said about mrs meredith stacy is a compassionate grade level leader she serves littles with every ounce of love and grace possible stacy treats the students as her own working with her is a joy she always has a positive attitude and a laugh i love her leadership style as she's willing to share her health daily she checks in on us she gives us stuffed little gifts and always a hug when we need it stacey's such a light at the end and we are blessed to have her as a coworker [Applause] she was meant to be a preschool teacher and i can say that as an administrator and as a parent um she had the pleasure of having a principal's kid one year isn't always the easiest um but i knew then the dynamic educator she was and then just to see her in this preschool role is where she is absolutely meant to be um she's kind and warm and loving balance was firm and fair which isn't easy to do um because if you're you know four-year-old since i still love you even though you know you did nothing so um it's a difficult balance add to that she's incredibly knowledgeable about what is developmentally appropriate for and i learned a lot from her in those regards because even with an elementary license you don't know what the little ones are learning to do most importantly she's a champion not just for her students but for other kids in our building she partners with jesus donaldson's class where they read to each other um second graders which is just exciting and when we are having student meetings is always like well send it down they get rid of my little ones um which is just exciting that not only are her kids able to take risks any student in her ability and just welcome in her room to be a risk taker as well because she was um when we first started talking about little noise i don't even think preschool had come out of my mouth in our meeting she's like sign me up i want to that's me i'll do it i want to teach because she needed that bless her heart and souls so thank you for all of you not just our students well let's do this first though well anyway this okay it says congratulations because you have dreamed big and work hard we figured we might like this place to rest thank you for doing what you do so well but not from one to two [Music] i might be [Laughter] all right [Music] okay we'll move on the next item is public comment for agenda items only if anybody has anything okay approval minutes from our last meeting on april 12th 2022.

most of our schools increased their ranking between 19 and 38 spots on the chart congratulations to all of our high schools our students parents teachers support staff administrators for your hard work and dedication to education mrs wood that concludes my report for this evening thank you thank you dr mccord we now move to 5.0 requests to speak to the governing board if we could have the admonition read please the board may make an open call to the public during a public meeting subject to reasonable time place and manner restrictions to allow individuals to address the public body on public unless the matters are properly noticed for discussion and legal action during the open call the board requests that speakers refrain from voicing complaints against school personnel or any person connected with the district as it may impact due process rights policy k-e k-e-b and k-e-d are provided by the board for disposition of legitimate complaints including those involving individuals forms required for use of these policies can be obtained from the gilbert public schools website wonderful we are glad to welcome our public here who have requested to speak we have six requests to speak and we have two who have made mention that they were not here to speak but to support those who are speaking and we will begin i will come up a couple at a time so you'll know first we have mr scott glover and he is speaking to agenda item 8.01 good evening governing board and members of the superintendency i have waited like 20 years for this um my name is scott glover i started teaching in gilbert in 1996 and i met my future wife shortly afterwards she's be she began teaching here in 1994 and i think about 1995-96 is when policy gbea item 8.01 on your agenda was revised or rewritten it did not allow for two staff members at a school to be married they could date they could be engaged they could be divorced but committed in marriage to one another was and is a no-no there were a few couples that were grandfathered in way back then and i think almost all of them are still together some are still working for gps which kind of goes to show you that it was a solution to a problem that didn't really exist i remember talking to paul houston way back then because carrie and i would have enjoyed being on the same campus and we would have spent even more time on that campus to the benefit of the camp of the students and the campus but uh mr houston who i admire to this day made it clear that the policy was not wasn't going to change and so i'm glad an update is finally being considered and so i just want to speak to encourage you to support the first and second read and hopefully a subsequent passage of this update to an antiquated uh puritanical policy especially though at a time when i really fear the general effects this culture war on teachers is having upon teacher retention and job satisfaction we should be asking for ways to support and to help keep teachers around and this is one such way and i i'm glad to see it i thought it was a silly and arcane policy back then and uh while carrie and i will probably never work on the same campus other married couples or parents and children might so i ask you to please support item 8.01 policy gbea as it moves forward and if you have any questions i'm not hard to find carrie either just not on the same campus but i also wanted to end by saying thank you and thank you sincerely for your service to american public education one of the great cornerstones of our democracy thank you mr glover we have and i've neglected to say we'll have three minutes for each speaker so thank you for that our next speaker will be commodore man and then kevin turnage evening i'm commodore mann i am the assistant to technical sergeant shanti um so i overhear a lot of what goes on in rotc and governing boards and her personal life um i'm mainly here to basically freestyle speech um i just want to know why um this new master sergeant is coming in is giving special treatment because he has been pestering uh sergeant shaney and major heim about information that he should already know because he was a former instructor at campo verde many years ago in fact he was major heim's first year major heim's first year was his last year at campo and i know he's a friend of yours um shane mccord so i just want to know why he's getting special treatment and why he's saying he's getting you know a special deal of money when all me and sunshine have been fighting for is you know a just stipend and no more contract changes i don't understand it i think it's unjust and just shows that you don't keep stay true to your word um i just don't understand it on a personal level now me talking here doesn't really do much for me anymore i'm a senior i leave in two months for marine corps boot camp but i'll still fight for this program even when i'm in the marine corps whether i be you know 100 000 miles away i'll still fight for it while they're starting standing there or not makes no difference to me that's all i gotta say thank you kevin turnage then miracle turnage good evening board members my name as you're probably already aware is kevin turnage i'm actually the honorable kevin turning so we'll just set the record straight um i started not to even speak tonight because my anger is out of control i find it amazing that you started this meeting today with the pledge of allegiance and these young students this and the principles that these students talked about from george washington and the photographer to your pledge of allegiance there's nothing left for these principles after june elementary school and junior high when you get to high school and you're trying to get rid and you can say you're not trying to get rid of the program all you want um it's become cronyism nepotism whatever you want to call it to where we have a board that isn't doing what it should do isn't making sure that our kids get taught those principles that are in the pledge of allegiance that that young man talked about and y'all could probably take a few lessons from those young elementary school students the amount of discrimination by the way of that favoritism cronyism and nepotism that happens within this district would put the united states merit system protection board in a tail spin for the amount of prohibited personnel practices committed not to mention the amount of discrimination committed by this school district only a crackdown on these abuses will allow this district to be able to restore the community's faith in the district i do remind all of you that five cfr 2635.702 exhibit explicitly prohibits the use of public office for private gain or endorsement of private gain for any product service or enterprise or for the private gain of friends family relatives or persons with whom employees are affiliated i have to ask about how it is that the close friend of one of the members here tonight is being hired specifically for a position and his wife works for the wife of this friend i wonder just how this board can blatantly continue backhanded tactics and ignore memorandums of agreement which you're supposed to discuss in 7.04 this evening you don't follow or make the schools follow the moa that they have so i'm not quite sure why thank you mr turner we appreciate your thoughts our next speaker will be miracle trinity and then following will be melissa gallaris i i hope that i said that correctly thank you good evening board members i'm sure you're already aware of my name but in case you forgot i'm miracle turnage a sophomore at gilbert high and i'm here on the behalf of afgrotc tonight i'd like to focus on a different point than my prior statements that more students can relate to about how this school is leaving students who do not academically excel and those who are not college bound in the dust whilst focusing on the very small population of students who excel and plan to attend college gilbert high school has implemented and poured countless of hours and dollars into promoting promoting and implementing the ib program as well as a brand new accelerated middle school are these great programs yes i will not argue are they really what ghs needs no they aren't since all this district seems to care about his numbers here you go as of december 2021 only 50 percent of graduates immediately enrolled in college and that number is expected to drop to put this statistic in a more of a personal level of about 460 seniors this year only about 258 of those students will obtain a college degree let's be real this day and age many make more money quicker through tech schools for electricians welding automotive or even you know the military than through a bachelor's degree are we taught this absolutely not we are taught that the only way you can ever do well for yourself is through a college education my question is why are we pushing and pouring so much money into these programs when one only 39 percent of students are mathematically proficient at gilbert high and only 35 percent of students are proficient in reading i'll give gilbert high the benefit of the doubt in the fact that we have a 90 graduation rate but does that really matter when over 60 percent of the students can't even meet proficiency in math and reading why are the students who are really needing the help not receiving it why is it that small population of students getting so much attention is it because we're supposed to be the flagship high school and we're ranked fifth out of seven not only that why are the programs who provide students with other routes for life other than college targeted like kfjrotc we teach students how to be leaders in any and every aspect of life to explore some standards and ideas of the military to see if it could be a future for them and on the topic of career readiness afgrotc is one of the best places you could be we offer a cte credit and test mind you that this district declined to make this a weighted class and as a program we offer routes to many scholarships the j-100 and any armed forces rotc scholarships and many more throughout az941 that we are aware of over twenty thousand dollars in scholarships have been awarded so since college readiness is so important to the school and district why are we being targeted why are the students who don't excel and plan to attend college targeted alongside these programs why is this tiny population of the schools so praised when you aren't even attempting to help those in needs how can you say a relationship with students means so much to this district when you can't even do the bare minimum for more than 60 percent of your students thank you miracle now we have melissa gallares and then chris tony good evening board my name is melissa galliars and this is my son cadet gibson goliaris as well as cadet miracle turnage i have two kids in the gilbert public schools my kids have been in the school district since kindergarten so that's roughly around 10 years this is only my second board meeting i have ever attended in person and both times now i'm discussing the same issue tonight i'm here once again in support of our jrotc program at gilbert high i'm also here because things really need to change last meeting we were told that all support that you all support the program but we need the numbers as well as an instructor to keep going i will have to say surprisingly the day after the last board meeting someone fixed the registration issues and opened registration to those that wanted to enroll in the program but was that a little too late those that weren't able to register properly chose another elective by then i'm sure other than that nothing else for the program has changed and that's why i'm here once again last meeting you talked about in order to have a program we need to have an instructor we have an instructor our instructor technical sergeant amy shanti is amazing and works day in and day out not only for our children or the school but as well as for our community she puts in tireless hours devoting all her time and energy into this program she has worked as one person this past year in a two-person role she gives and gives that being said she works in a hostile work environment where the principal and the administration shows zero support for her and our program she can't even run the program the way it's supposed to be run the way the air force regulates there is no appreciation for all the countless hours she puts in as well as the service these cadets do for the school we also pretty much have to beg to be put on the marquee the tvs at the school social media after any tournaments there are no trophies displayed in any of the school hallways this is why we have brought just a few trophies tonight of what we've actually won this year why should we pretty much have to beg to be put on the marquee to make the principal's newsletter announcement which up until this point only happened this last week i'm i'm sure due to this meeting coming up we competed in nationals earlier this month and did amazing and i know you mentioned that tonight but i had already written my speech and it's been almost a month so um not once did the administration or principal ask how we did or congratulate us when we returned my son cadet galliaris was part of a two-person team that took first place at nationals he also received second in solo second and four person was part of an armed reg and exhibition team that received third and fifth place our school overall plays fifth out of 31 schools in the nation you would think our school school would be super proud of this and display it any way they could so tonight i ask you to look into the administration and principal at our school and figure out a way for them to support our program our instructor and our cadets also having an appreciation for all thank you thank you appreciate that and finally we have chris tony if you wouldn't mind rotating the camera around to the table at the back of the room as you can see we did bring a few trophies these are from this school year alone there are several cases shelves and racks that hold the remainder and including a desk as well they're out of sight of most of the school population now these trophies signify not only hard work and dedication but are a recruitment tool in and of themselves many students might have an interest in enrolling in the program if they could see just how successful this team is one does not need to know how to throw a perfect spiral shoot a basket or throw a fastball to be included in a program that repeatedly demonstrates success now i am very proud to say that one of these belongs to my son jason who picked up a rifle for the first time almost halfway through the school year through countless hours of hard work and the mentorship of his fellow cadets who did not shun him for his initial attempts to emulate what they were doing he finally felt ready to compete at the alhambra state drill meet where he placed fourth although he did not bring a trophy back from that meet his place within the solo exhibition group was solidified just two weeks later after numerous more hours of practice and further mentoring from his fellow cadets at the rocky mountain national meet he placed fifth and did bring back a trophy this combined with the hard work of the rest of the corps and the various events that were required for the overall ranking at the meet brought fifth place in a national competition back to gilbert high i would like to add that following the solo performances a world champion in the same event they were competing in took time to come and congratulate them on how they presented themselves on the drill pad this sense of community and teamwork within this group of high school students is the reason why this program needs to stay at be kept at the school at any cost please help us to ensure that the administration at gilbert high treats sergeant shanti in a manner consistent with the other coaches that enrollment numbers are allowed to be bolstered by bringing back the fifth class period and restoring the pay structure that all of the other coaches are receiving technical sergeant shandy has repeatedly stated it's not the students that are driving her away it is the way she is treated by the administration in the district i can think of no other person that i would want to be there as a teacher coach and mentor for my son than her thank you that concludes our request to speak to the governing board we will now move on to 6.0 reports and begin with 6.01 fy 2022 monthly financial report and third quarter financial report ended march 31st 2022 dr mccord thank you madam president governing board members tonight we have this bonnie betts our assistant soup of business services giving you the 2022 financial report monthly finance report in third curve third quarter financial report ending march 31st 2022 good evening president wood dr mccord governing board members so this is our monthly report but in addition march 31st ends our third quarter so we've added a couple of slides to provide you some comparative information of last fiscal year in comparison to the current fiscal year okay i just checked it i really did okay we will start with our normal operating funds which is generally the the funds that we have the most flexibility to spend federal funds is a quick summary in state funds there's a quick summary and then the final grouping of slides is about the third quarter financial results with comparative data from a year ago so this is our our operating fund grid you can see that our revised budget number three pending figure has gone up by about a half a million dollars this is due to additional weighted student counts in addition we did see a small decrease in the amount encumbered due to paying off several purchase orders so you can see our available balance is just under 50 million dollars note the e-rate and the school plant funds as well as the energy and water savings funds have been updated reflecting revised budget number three pending the school plant fund note the 7.5 million dollars representing the posting of the sale of neely proceeds finally the energy and water savings was also showing a negative at the last presentation a negative available balance so we've corrected that budget as well in the revised budget number three pending please know that the revised budget number three pending is even though it's very late and we're actually going to present the revised number three to you next tuesday but today we received updated data regarding our student accounts and our weighted student accounts so the new pending budget for your approval next tuesday night will be different than these figures as well so under the federal funds detail i just wanted to show you the 100th day in person grant which we just received our allocation of 3.9 million dollars we are working to determine how best to spend that money and it is the most constrained of all of the federal funds so we will be um deliberating over uh how to spend those dollars in the next leadership meeting the application is due may 6th and the money must be spent by may 1st of 2023 so we have less than a year to spend the monies and then we just are sharing the sr3 monies and the education plus up grant as well all those are the federal cares act monies and then other federal projects just wanted to point out that we did add the summer school grant from the governor's office which we will be expending this summer for all of our summer school programs throughout gilbert public schools but where was that where was this within the it's within the other federal projects amount so you can see the revised budget number two is five hundred and forty thousand and it increased by about six hundred thousand dollars due to that grant okay thank you [Music] and then the state funds just wanted to share the college credit exam incentive we did receive the dollars for that and we will be paying that out the first payment in may to all those that have earned the bonus for um students passing the advanced placement or ib testing throughout gilbert public schools and then finally other funds details we'd like to point out the advanced placement summer institute this is due for gilbert public schools the in the for this summer and due to the efforts of the community education department as well as mr jared ryan we are bringing the advanced placement summer institute to govern public schools this is considered an enterprise and to date we have over 110 participants signed up and we're looking forward to a positive summer experience for our advanced placement teachers those that are within goa public schools as well as those that are joining us from other school districts in the state of arizona so we're excited about that and that's all i have for the monthly financial so before i go to the quarterly financials are there any questions about anything i've shared on the month-to-month data okay great so this is the third quarter financial report please keep in mind that where whenever we present the monthlies we present the various grouping of funds federal state and operating as we are sharing the quarterly financials we are focusing on what we consider the general fund or operating funds so this is just looking at this first grid this is our operating funds detail so that's that's grouping all of these funds together and providing some analysis and comparing them to what was going on a year ago so first revenues so this this pie chart just basically shows how the distribution of our available resources occurs by funding source so whether local so these are taxpayer property taxpayers county county assistance the state and then of course the federal dollars so please note that the federal dollar amounts here include e-rate and medicaid so that's why they're included those are very flexible funds that's why they're included on the operating funds and that in the federal grid so interestingly as time has gone on the last probably 25 years the movement between the proportion of state and local has continued to move to the state general fund continuing to put more and more pressure on the state general fund prior to that time the distribution 52 percent 42 was reversed where most of the funding for education was coming from the local taxpayer so these are the revenues based on on source uh bit by source in comparing year over year so you can see the difference in the revenues the total 300 million versus 264 million in the prior year and then you can see that the state monies the 131 million expected versus 157.6 million expected is related to the base level amount increase as well as student counts associated with our school finance formula so again in addition the classroom site fund please note that the classroom site fund is included in the general fund or operating fund details so recall that prior to last year or going into the 2022 year the classroom site fund revenue was increased from about 500 or 430 dollars per student up to 733 dollars per student so this grid is reflecting that as well so then this is the quarter operating revenue by fund as you would expect most of the revenue is going into the maintenance and operations fund and you can see the classroom site fund is 13.7 million as well which is significant capital is a small amount at one percent please know that this is revenue received to date that's been posted to date does not reflect the amount expected so um this is the year-over-year ex comparison by fund again if you look at maintenance and operations a year ago it was a total of 229 million expected in comparison to 246 million so that again is due to the base level amount and additional student counts so recall that in the current year we gained over a thousand new student counts reflecting much of those of those monies please note too that we are looking at revenues here not budget so these dollar figures only are expressing the amount of new money received and do not at all consider the budget balance carry forward so these are new revenues that we're seeing year over year before i go on to the expenditures are there any questions here i'll just ask so the capital it looks like last year it was similar that there was only a small percentage received at this point in the year so is that that's typical and it's not intended to be typical so these are one of the areas in which we're improving over time generally speaking we would want to make sure that the county knows how we would like the revenue split between maintenance and operations and capital and so we're just behind on posting the revenues to unrestricted capital okay instead of mnl so that's going to be fixed in the next for the next um presentation so we do have the money here we just haven't posted it that's correct okay thank you so these are the details so it was 425 to 730 733 per weighted student account that was the increase and then the other revenue of course is just consolidated but it does include the medicaid e-rate and the other smaller funds to include school plan so expenditures this is our grid showing the operating expenditures by object again you can see that 84 of our spend throughout all these operating funds is in salaries and benefits which we have we have seen predominantly over the last few years anyway that it's been hovering between 84 and 86 operating and then capital as well and you can see that in this particular grid we showed one million dollars of revenue in capital but we've actually spent 12.4 million dollars in capital so it reflects the unbalance of the cash to the spend in the industry capital fund which again we will be correcting um this week so this is the year-over-year comparison of expenditure by object so if you go way over to the right you can see where our expected spend year over year has has changed relatively flat but you can see when you look at salaries and benefits that it's a clear increase uh the 171.9 million dollars expected a year ago at this time versus 175.4 million that we plan on spending recall that you all approved a three percent uh i'm sorry a two percent pay increase and then on top of that a three percent one-time stipend which did not come out of these monies the one time three percent stipend was budgeted for and accounted for in the sr3 monies so operating spend expense is even year-over-year note that capital has increased year over year we spent a great deal of time trying to get that money out into our schools more quickly in the in the current year resulting in many schools seeing new library furniture and and expenditures such as that so trying to take advantage of the fact that we are fully funded in the district additional assistance and that's all i have for you tonight so there's the other questions no questions mrs humphries did you have any questions uh not at this time okay thank you with no further questions thank you very much mrs betts we appreciate that we will now move to 7.0 the consent agenda and 7.01 the approval of consent agenda items board members do i have a motion i move that we approve the consent agenda items as presented thank you miss eugetti it's been moved is it seconded thank you mr parker it's been moved and seconded that we approve the consent agenda items as presented i will ask for a vote all those in favor please vote by saying aye aye those opposed say nay [Music] that will pass 5-0 thank you and that will take us to 8.0 action items and we will begin with 8.01 policy development first read of policy j g b e a a staff conflict of interest dr mccord thinking madam president governing board members as our employee who spoke tonight mr glover pointed out that up until now relatives were not allowed to teach together work together on the same campus in the same building and i think that was changed probably a little bit later than that what your mouth and something to me just say it out loud 2010 was the last time we looked at that and that's when we changed it and as we've gone back through and looked at it we believe uh because of kind of what mr glover pointed out if there is no issue we don't want to create an issue and if there are issues we have other policies that can address that and so tonight we bring before you this change and i'll read this to you real quick it's employment of close relatives no person employed by the district may be directly supervised by a close relative father mother son daughter sister brother or spouse this policy will apply for summer part-time work as well as for full-time employment a dependent of governing board member a person more than half who more than half of whose support is obtained from a governing board member cannot be hired in the district except to but except by consent of the governing board the spousal governing board member cannot be employed by the district and of course this is our staff uh conflict of interest policy and this is it goes on for a lot of other things related to business and vendors this policy and this portion of the policy is just related to this portion and that's what we want to change moving forward thank you dr mccord may i have a motion madam president i move approval of first read for policy gbea staff conflict of interest thank you dr santa cruz is their second second thank you mr jetty it's been moved and seconded that we approved first street of policy gbea staff conflict of interest is there any discussion this is a first read it has been to the policy committee once and if approved tonight i'll go back again before her second read no other discussion excellent we will take a vote then all those in favor of approving the first street of policy gbea please vote by saying aye aye and any oppose with nay that first street will pass 5-0 thank you now we will move to 8.02 policy development first street at policy jlcd medicines administering medicines to students dr mccord thank you madam president governing board member this is a change that essentially gives us the ability to have what is called narcan on our campuses and that is to be used in case there's some sort of need for a medical issue related to that and the additions or changes that we're making for this policy is standing order shall maintain in the office of the director of health services copies of the standing order shall be kept in each campus health office where now i'll call it naloxone naloxone is that the medic that's the medical term correct narcan is another um name for it the school nurse shall be responsible for building level management of the not say it again naloxone naloxone i gotta say it one more time naloxone of the naloxone stocks and we'll alert director of health services impending expiration dates of restocking needs and so again in the past we have not kept this on campus this is what we're asking for with this change in policy moving forward thank you dr mccord board members is there a motion i moved for uh approval first read policy jlcd thank you mr parker is there a second second thank you dr santa cruz it's been moved and seconded that we approve the first street of policy jlcd medicines administering medicines to students is there any discussion i i think it was it's good to note that it was our district nurse who brought this to our attention and has asked for that and also will oversee the procedures putting it on the campus and training and anything that goes along with that that is correct okay anything else and again this is just a first read all right seeing no further discussion i will ask for a vote all those in favor of first street of approving the first street of policy jlcd medicines administering medicines to students please vote by saying aye hi thank you any opposed with nay that first trade passes 5-0 thank you board members are there any requests for future agenda items in this meeting um wood yes i i do we did receive an email from the arizona school board association about the political agenda and it's due at the end of may i ask that that be put on our agenda so that we can discuss it and be send out in advance so we can see it okay thank you i will ask miss wilson to follow up on that and then anything else please let me know or dr mccord or mrs wilson as we go all right let's move to 10.0 board committee reports gilbert education foundation we have the gef scholarship reception this thursday night at 7 30 p.m at mesquite junior high congratulations to the students and the staff who are being recognized and thanks to all of those who applied and thank you especially to our sponsors and community members who support gef and allow these options and opportunities to provide this support for our students and staff that's my that's my report for there 10.02 mrs humphries with city of mesa and legislation um so on the city of mesa i had communication with council member thompson and they are working on their budget and they're just really excited about all the things that are going on um if you've been out by the gateway airport they've got a lot of um things going on and they have we have a 70 percent of the workforce within that distance of attended college so they're really excited about um what they're working on to bring businesses in um and then i'll also on the asca just a reminder that the summer leadership conference is june 9th 10th and 11th and the registration is open for that thank you miss humphries item 10.03 town of gilbert liaison dr santa cruz nothing to report and i must confess that is not because there isn't anything going on in the town of gilbert it's that i have not connected with vote by saying aye aye and any opposed with nay we will adjourn until may 3rd thank you very much good night

i'll move you through those minutes [Music] motion and second to approve the minutes from the last meeting financials claims i'm trying to find a little quicker chris but was there like a vehicle okay we had those maintenance vehicles those vans we've had it on our list to do for a while now but we're just trying to squeeze everything out a couple years ago we got rid of one of the maintenance fans we didn't replace it and then we're down to our last one it was really slowly so we it's actually a truck um so so then we'll for now we'll still look to maybe have another maintenance vehicle at some point but right now we just have steve's vehicle and then this one he's had his for quite a while now yes yeah yeah those vehicles were pretty rough yes i saw a thing on there about uh the uh bathrooms of metro north yeah that particular project of payment that we made yeah so how's that coming it's going along well we have our next meeting next week we meet twice every two weeks and they are finishing up the first phase which were the two restrooms and so once those can be opened up we'll move on to the second phase which is the other two sets of restrooms um so everything's looking good nothing new about how the ornaments are payroll [Music] motion a second to approve [Music] payroll financial summary uh a couple things uh one before i forget is we are going we are starting our audit uh it's been a couple years since our last audit so they will be auditing the 2019 2020 and 2020 and 2021 fiscal years state board of accounts will not be performing this audit because they are so far behind that they are partnering with another auditing firm i don't know how many schools they've ever done before so this will be an interesting audit one and then two it's all virtual so we're gathering a lot of information and having to submit that so that's a new experience for a lot of us in that standpoint as well but mike just got the audit engagement letter and so that process will start i don't know if they'll meet with us in the past they've always met with us and we've had to have a board member represent that usually it's the board president but they have not given us any of that type of information or that's even going to be happening at this point so i just want to inform you of that uh and then any questions with that i guess yeah [Music] so is it the same i think it's put in statute that's what the fee is what was it like 700 an hour a day for federal audits and it's like 200 something for state audits which i thought they travel and all that but it's not true wow [Music] it'd be faster this time since they don't have to travel here we can only hope tongue-in-cheek it's like a lawyer that tried to make dragons so yeah so that so that will be so that it'll end like the fiscal year will be the last june 30th of 2021 so it won't include anything from this year that will be in the next cycle of auditing so they do it every two years and then the federal because of all the federal dollars all the schools receive that adds an extra layer on it because there's a threshold that it schools earn so much federal dollars and they have to have it audited yearly so there's upside to like the uca art it's all good it's just it takes a lot of time and effort to do so all right uh then going to the cash flow so these are the update cash flow expectations or estimates for 2022 up through march some of the things that have changed from the last time you saw this was that we did receive our reconciliation for our spring adm count so that would be reflected in the basic state grant there for april may and june we don't have we don't have the amounts passed or for july on yet those have not been pushed out yet based off of our estimated aem counts but i just carried what was from the beginning of the year on to the into the rest of the year except updated what those reconciliations would be for april managing uh i've also since we've been talking about classified and admin raises for later on for next school year i've also incorporated the costs uh the anticipated costs for those into the spreadsheet to reflect uh how that would look for both uh education and operation funds because a majority of those custodian majority of those classified staff raises will come out of operations as well so that is all reflected then in both of those cash flow estimates so the did we get we got a vote from the enrollment though so yes so the increase in the moment you would see there for april may and june would just be based off the increase of avm from the fall this spring okay when we had our february difference yes and if our adm would have went down then yes we would have received less for those months i was going to ask this later when we talked about raises but the raises would kick in on these cash flows in the june july 1st some some of them would depending on the position uh but then but uh some about about half and half some would not start until august 1st yeah there's good growth in the operations fund even with those but i guess we're only looking at half a year yeah it's a pretty good estimate right and so the only thing that would not include at this point would be whatever we would negotiate for bargaining for the next teacher the second year of the teacher that's all i had for cash flow all right moving on to personnel we have just a short list on it these are all under resignations and these are all effective at the end of the current school year connor hobbs teacher at southwood elementary delaying law slpa at wmap and mark mary lowry cook at northville high school that's it for sure that we included hr todd promotion the second charles favor said hi heartland career center reports meeting last week and we were kind of updated on a letter to be sent with the eda and we tabled that and we'll have another meeting tomorrow to go over that to hopefully make sure things line with what they expect us to be and so it's kind of a i got a leg here you guys can take a look at and see how that is done so that we can be in compliance with eda and other than that we just business as normal bed up may 23rd they'll have 240 seniors graduating out there that's amazing wow and next year they have their ass 670 students are asking to be in apartment and there's just not room and we were talking about the building trades you're wanting to add another class of some sort because there's just so much demand at this point a few years ago there wasn't so we eliminated one teacher and moved things around now it's coming back around that's a good thing any other programs met real strong the cna classes they're they're very strong yeah there's an end machining and uh cosmetology always that's always packed welding is always pretty fun yes you know three or four major ones like that i don't know how the auto body is but the diesel and stuff like that's pretty good so then the ag one is i was just gonna ask the anticipated number of precision ag more than they didn't give me that [Music] but they are going to hire her full-time without the grant at this point because she was hired on using a grant for two years that way and then they graduated some in the cdo classes and that's huge right now yeah if they were just a little older they go to walmart for 100 grand a year i think [Music] yeah what i'm going to talk about tonight is very preliminary but just won't let you know that we are going to talk about it so house enrolled act 1310 was the virtual learning um instructional day act that was passed by legislators and there's been a lot of talk about it because it talks about um the three days um that you're allowed to do asynchronous learning um not synchronous learning and so um originally it was april 8th that they were going to come out with the guidance from the state that was pushed back to last friday and now they finally released the information today although there's still a lot of questions with it but one thing i want to let you know is that since we have in our calendar next year for the 2022 calendar three days we'll be okay with that part of it but we also use e-learning days for weather-related cancellations and so we will have to look at that and they talk about what they talked about you know the waivers that can happen but we don't know necessarily um if that is weather related i think it would be but they use different terminologies that we'll have to find out um what that really means and talks about extraordinary circumstances in the meantime in the meantime the actual information also shared about the legislation that happened a couple years ago and that was the uh i think it was 1003 flexibility yes the 103 flexibility waiver request grants some schools have requested waivers to be able to transition from days like 180 days to minutes and so that you can use those other days for other things like professional development and so we have been when i say we a larger group of superintendents have been uh chatting about you know what we could do and even in this it was just released today so it was interesting i'd already set a meeting with our area program and our heartland personal group the five superintendents to look together because you can go together as a group of schools or individual schools to apply for those waivers so we're going to at least investigate the 1003 flexibility waiver request and it actually gives us writing information from the indiana department of education another option to be able to do that instead of worrying about this virtual days and so really very confusing uh dr kuhn mr drake and myself we looked at this real quickly tonight when we received this but they don't answer all the questions but we're going to go ahead and proceed and look at the waiver um the first waiver which is a virtual to see what that's going to be you'll have to explain that more and then also the 1003 flexibility so just stay tuned um nothing no decisions nothing to bring to you yet but at some point we may bring something to you to request um some changes and we'll see how that works out but everybody in the state of indiana has been holding their breath for a long time we thought we're going to get all the answers we really haven't got all the answers yet that we're still working on so i don't know we are starting i learn testing so we'll hear about that and since i'm going to talk about textbooks to kind of set my side time later on to talk to you guys about that so okay that's good we will move on then to the new business and we have a recommendation to approve classified and administrator raises for the 2022-2023 school year we'll turn it over to dr kuhn but either one of us can answer questions sure um so those first three items on your agenda kind of go hand in hand with each other a little bit um so specifically about the classified admin portion since when when i first got here we started implementing a just kind of a two-year cycle on on looking at classified administrative salaries um we look at teachers on a yearly basis uh we kind of went through out of looking at those on a couple year basis it's helped with a lot of different things with budgeting and predictions a little bit so the last time that we've looked at class or approved any type of races for those positions would have been uh right when code started in 2020 or 2020 there right at the end of the school year and so at that point in time we took a look at a better comparison of how we match up with schools that are similar to us with schools around our area and with schools across the state and we found some significant gaps in some of those areas so when we did that two years ago we tried to address some of those gaps for some of those positions it wasn't necessarily kind of um the the original tint was to catch them up a little bit faster but because when covet hit we took a little bit more of a cautious approach because we were not sure how funding was going to look at that point in time because there was a lot of things happening at the state level that led people to believe that we could see a reduction in funding because of because of code but we did we did approve uh raises in those areas so coming back around this time we did a similar snapshot and look at those areas and we tried to better address a lot of those gaps in those areas and so what i bring to you then is a reflective of some of those areas are much improved um some areas may still fall short nobody would receive less than a five percent increase on that with that being said there will be some that may get a little bit more just because of the gap that we've seen in a comparative matter so i guess that is the kind of the recommendation then for those positions uh and how we would like to move them moving forward and then we will obviously continue to monitor those gaps and areas of weakness that we see in the future a couple thoughts the pay scale for their cooks do we struggle finding people with that so the pay scale is relatively still new um i think that was kind of started right before i started where it used to be a pay scale level that was like went up to like 10 15 years and we reduced it to a two level pay scale so you got your beginning pay and then the next year you're at the top of the pay scale essentially and so we've we've really tried to address both of those areas with beginning pay i think beginning pay is also a struggling issue with getting people in the foot in the door but then as they see okay the next year i'll move to the top of the scale then then by that time we're in another cycle of looking at increases and so forth so um comparatively it is an area that we have we were behind but we feel like we've improved a little bit uh to that but that's just that's a hard position because a lot of it is not just about the money it's about the hours because most of our cooks are just three hour positions and so a lot of times people are looking for more hours when it comes to a position like that i'm just saying transportation costs on the drive and we've really encouraged a lot of them to at one point some of them were doing that where they could also maybe drive a bus to pick up more hours and more money some of them have even been you know aids during part of the day to pick up more hours and more money so if those situations work out we try to encourage them to do that but sometimes they don't necessarily want to bring them uh depending on what their hours are and the time the stuff is needed but speaking of the bus driving thing then the wage increases is great i didn't know as we struggled to find bus drivers is that at the top of one two of the list of why it's hard to find bus drivers other than the split in the day and the whole the split of the days is hard the other thing that's become really hard is getting their licensure a lot of requirements and holes they have to jump through to make that happen i remember kevin let me tell him a story one time that when he was when he started there they just threw him the bus keys and he started driving the bus it's not that way anymore and there's a lot of regulations a lot of requirements that they have to go through that i don't think is a draw sometimes so on the first of [Music] yeah we do we we pay we pay our bus drivers comparably pretty well i mean you're talking at most they're probably working three hours a day did they do anybody i think i had a friend that i thought she drove her best for and uh she said she got benefits yeah a lot of our bus drivers don't want that benefit because then that puts them in some type of financial issue that does not work out for them so we don't offer it or do we offer it they can take it we don't provide a benefit where we contribute anything to it if that makes sense but it's not worth the money what's the difference between what is the classroom instructor i'm lost on that one i know what a paraprofessional is so a classroom instructor is a position that takes on more of a teaching instructional role like they prepare for [Music] lessons and things like that so like um we really started the classroom instructor position at white's when we did some of the when they transitioned to more of a uh not a virtual but an online platform uh where they're managing the classroom so it's just them and managing by themselves yes then they're not managing it by themselves they're managing with the teacher or they're making as a teacher essentially so they're providing the lesson plans they're preparing the lessons that day they're offering the classroom when we added the three-year-old preschool instructors we they also became grouped into that category as classroom instructor the three-year-old there's a four-year-old four-year-old still a life yeah so that is the difference between the classroom instructor and one other thing to mention too especially for you guys are a little new so when we change to this format there were like five or six different pay schedules and different classifications of all these different people and so it was it was streamlined to be able to like this and the thing was too there were not raises for many many years for classified or administrators at the time so you know obviously financially we're in the it's beneficial that we can do a lot of this now too so it's and that was about seven years ago when we changed the format of this and really the philosophy behind that is okay you hire somebody and we feel comfortable with they're doing a great job and so they're going to go to the top of scale right away whereas before just like chris said it could have been you know someone were 15 18 years to get to the top of scale and that really would not work in this this environment that we're in right now so it just makes it a lot better situation so it was a little tough during the transition time because some people were at the top and some people then got to the top right away but it's been transitioned enough i think it works really well so well i i wasn't getting this for some reason i don't know where i was not finding it you know going back to the cooks you know i just obviously all of us have employees and you know yeah it is the hard part about the food service is that it's its own entity because of the federal dollars that we give so everything strictly comes out of the food fund and so we've had years where it was red and our concern right now is that um we've been getting money from the government for these free meals and that's going to go away and how that's going to impact our food service fund and so if we're not careful that could really draw down pretty quickly and then the state's not going to reimburse us for the monies that we had been getting through this covet period and you're going back into the paid status for meals and that's very i mean that's right now there's no extension for free meals going in the next school year now there's legislation out there still that might extend it but right now going into it it looks like that we would be going back to the pain free and reduced status and so that free and reduced test yes we do get some money from the government but it's not like what we've been getting now and the money some of them like the money that we're spending now is not going nearly as far because of the expenses of food costs so because because i've had someone ask me about this so since we get free lunches we can't ask for people to pay because that only if it's the ala carter yes that's well i'm just asking because i mean i've had one person say what if i want to pay for my kids i don't want free life it's an all or nothing options know that they can donate donations they can make a difference it's an all or nothing option we either had to stay with the the paid free review status or we had to go to the three-year status because [Music] i don't know so with that being said if that's always a way and go back to being in the red where do you pull that income or how do y'all set that red money how'd you do well last time we had to uh take money out of rainy day fund and then we had to make adjustments at the end of the year with staffing to make it manageable you could do it again am i correct if we get too much money in there though they make it spin yes yes and that's where we're at and that's keep recruiting that's where we'll that's where we'll be at that's where we'll be at and they'll tell us we'll have to spend it down and like i said that can go pretty cool okay did you want to handle each one of these one at a time or do you want to explain yeah i can go with the second one the second one then deals with the handbook the salary handbook i gave you a snapshot so that you didn't have to go through everything you could just identify those pages so the main changes would be just the salary amounts that we just discussed there are some name changes there's a few things with language changes just to try to make some things more comparative to what we currently are doing i think the biggest changes there would be for those classified positions that received vacation days we wanted to do some things differently with that we may revisit it again down the road but at one point to get so many vacation days it took you 20 years to get to that point and so and then there are times when you get hired that it may be a year and a half before you got any time and so we wanted to try to um make it a little bit more reasonable and so we base a lot we base our years of experience based off number day's work and so for the most part it's been 120 days for our staff it wasn't for some of those classified staff positions so we made that back to 120 days and then we put in a provision for those that do receive uh vacation time that if they worked less than 120 days for that year they would still receive vacation time when the when their contract they don't necessarily have contracts but we'll call them contracts that when they're when their pay rolls over to the next year so their pay rolls over on july 1.

and so in the past if we hired them in let's say march they wouldn't get any vacation days come that july one they'd have to wait until the full year so that next july one period to receive any vacation any time off and so we wanted to we wanted to make it more consistent with 120 days because that's what we do with teachers and other classified staff so then if they worked more than 120 days so if they got hired in february let's say and they work more than 120 days that july 1 period then they would get the five days but if they worked less than 120 days then they would get 30 days their years of experience is based off the 120 days and so that's the vacation time was related based off of those experience years i guess or time does that make sense so this is a hopefully a better benefit to maybe keeping or enticing some of those employees that they know that they're going to get time sooner than later because it really you just don't get employees that stay for 20 years anymore and so if we can reduce some of that time when they can get those benefits a little sooner than later that's what this is really doing the other change would be perf changes and the perf changes relates to the cooking cook position um that was not ever updated when we made perf changes back before i had even started and so the reason for these changes is to align a little bit better with what we are currently doing with our other staff the issue that we run into now is that cooks that were receiving perf had to work four hours or more well most of our cooks work three hours we do have a few that were four or five and we would keep them on perch but what was happening was we'd have a cook leave so then we would hire somebody or we would increase one of the person's time by an hour or so so then they would have to put on perf they'd be put on perf for maybe two weeks and then be taken off perf because then they moved back to the three hours when we replaced that position so we were just moving people i mean we're just it just became a hassle for as little of time that they would be receiving that that birth so it wouldn't change for anybody that's currently receiving turf it would be for those new hires that come in that wouldn't be receiving the curved contributions at that point in time which aligns to how we've been doing all of our classified staff since 2016 i believe was when that was implemented that's what the third component was on the resolution uh the perf resolution was just updating that list of perfect eligible positions so what i'm going to do then is even though he described all of these together i'm going to entertain motions separately in case there's one that you would rather not vote so i'll take a look entertain a motion for the recommendation to approve the classified and administrator raises for the 2022-2023 school year motion and second to approve the classified administrator raises for next school year all favor say hi the recommendation to approve the changes to the msd salary so almost a second to approve the changes to the mst salary handbook all in favor say all right recommendations to approve the updated perf resolution so uh i'll have a bush on a second to approve the updated perf resolution all in favor say aye next we have a recommendation to approve an overnight extended out-of-state trip for norfolk ap physics chemistry and calculus to cedar point math and physics day on friday may 13th so moved second focus on the second to approve the how to state trip for northfield on paris we have no unfinished business um we've been talking what you said you're going to talk about taxes well let's uh let me remind you that uh in the middle of march coordinating we talked about social studies textbooks uh and then we put those out for public consumption and then at the end of march we did math textbooks and so we've had some people from the community look at those and the feedback has been positive and i shared some of the concerns of the community with the teachers and of course the teachers will tell you um that we're hiring the teachers to teach not the books right and so the books are just a resource for them and they are all very well aware that their job is to help children think through that not just memorize that or move on and so lots of good conversations um i would point out um matt's a great question about florida and what's going on with their math textbooks um just the background when textbook companies tend to target bigger states for the money right and so indiana is not one of those states texas california florida new york they drive textbooks and so typically you get textbooks that convey to those and we just kind of get something that follows along with that but in the recent years with the whole push for technology textbook companies have gotten much better about targeting specific states with their materials and with the advent of different states having different standards that makes it difficult for them to make one textbook for a size of this all and so i reached out to the vendors just to double check it but the florida department of education has on their website a pdf of all of the books that they well i'll show you the title it says k-12 mathematics instructional materials not recommended list does not meet criteria and so i sent you guys the link to their website and i think i gave you the pdf too and so if you'll if when you get a chance because you're i'm sure you're just dying to read it you'll notice almost all of the titles um specifically mentioned florida because they've created that textbook to reflect foreign and so i went through and none of the titles that are on the florida list correspond to any of the titles that are on our list um and so i've reached out to the vendors just to double check to make that to me to make sure that's the case and i've heard back from a couple of them but i feel fairly confident saying that the titles for instance like pre-calculus they're one of the vendors has like five different types of calculus works um and the one that made the florida listing for calculus is actually an online book which we're buying textbooks which isn't the same and so i i think that puts that should put our minds in these uh as far as that goes um and i don't know if you've had a chance to look at it essentially what the complaints were on some of the textbooks especially the upper level math was that they included um charts and formulas that demonstrated um critical race or you know just just some kind of things that would be red flags for us and our school community for instance the one that comes to mind is they give you a chart and it shows you people that were surveyed and their level of racism well then they correspond that to the age of the respondents and they turn that into a formula so you get the impression that if you plug in somebody who's 40 and you you know you figure out the formula oh well i can see that they're going to be racist or uh and the same thing with political party uh liberal conservative and so anyway a lot of that stuff really isn't what we're trying to teach in our math classes we're just trying to teach the other stuff so um so anyway i just wanted to address that i thought that was a great question is she looking that up yeah yeah racism racist 40 year olds were once racist 20 year old so he doesn't change if they're racist they're racist so it doesn't mean you know the textbook doesn't need to go into that no and and of all the things to try to explain by formula human being is probably not the one right and so so uh i i with that and we've had them out for public preview for over four weeks just because of spring break and the meetings and whatnot i would ask your approval for those books for social studies and that and you see they're listed there all right i will do that as new business then so i guess i would entertain a motion to adopt the math and social studies textbooks that mr drake has brought us soon motion and second to approve the math and social study textbooks all in favor say all right bye okay now we'll jump that back down to unfinished business which we have done um and then board policy uh second reading and the vote for the uncompensated lead policy so i put that up on the screen again um you can see what is proposed and what was the present and did not receive any other comments or questions about that so i just i would like to make a recommendation that you approve the new uncompensated lead policy so ocean second to approve the uncompensated leave policy all in favor say hi all right public comment on any items okay any items from board members it's just standard i think it should be mentioned maybe that as we give races tonight to administrators that it's responsible as a board that we evaluate mike's salary level and we'll discuss that and pursue raising that in the near future right because we left them off of christmas anything else all right

go through the document it looks something like this it says footsie park board of education agenda for reorganization meeting okay i'll go we just did the uh the odes and again i want to congratulate mr russo and dr pontoliano and the president and vice presidency there's a notice here about standing up notice a line item here for standard operating procedures it's a big large binder that essentially everything suits and that's what we do in the business office and throughout the district that was approved a few months ago by cusack so congratulations to everyone in the business office and really throughout the uh the district there's a blurb here about me being qualified purchasing agent for any uh dollars above forty four thousand that's essentially the bid threshold so we talked about that there's a line item here on page three on the bottom you see atra uh they are a janitorial supply company they essentially came in in april and did a pp inventory in regard to covet and make sure we have enough inventory for not only uh the remainder of the year but through the summer and then it will come in the summer to do another inventory analysis for the re the 2223 school year a couple other quick items i want to point out is on page seven you see all our state contracts in our county and state approved cooperatives these are essentially contractors who not we do not need to get quotes or to go out to bid because they've already won state contracts or cooperatives where they've done the bid pre-bid and been awarded these bids for certain items such as infrastructure i.t supplies whatever the case may be these contractors are integral to us running our business because we don't have to go out and solicit quotes and bids because they've already kind of won those bids so like i said these are the kind of nuts and bolts of who we use on an ongoing basis to kind of run our business let's see go to page nine on the top you'll see two grant writers there there's our grant writer winning grants have been with us many years and our other grant writer millennium again they're a key card we've gotten many new grants over the last couple years including the one we're working on right now is arp that's the biden money uh they've been integral in helping us hopefully obtain approval and we're still in the uh submission stage in regard to working through the op ramp we hopefully will get a an approval in the next hopefully 30 to 60 days that's the large one it's over four million dollars in total um page 10 uh you see the e-rate again they're an integral part of our business they go out again essentially work with us on any telecom large telecom projects or i t projects where uh they do the bidding for us and when we win the bid we pay them three percent of the total award and then they get us anywhere from seventy to eighty percent back on the dollar so if we spend a hundred thousand dollars on a project they get a seventy eighty thousand dollars back after we make payment we get checks via ach in the summer integral part of our business really can't do it without them page 11 united federated you'll see to our inspection and our fire alarms i think on the bottom two paragraphs extremely important you see preventive maintenance a company called express air they do the majority of our hvac and our air quality again based on coven and all that's been going on the last two years rich lions express air and his staff have really done a robust job for us keeping us filters preventive maintenance anything to do with ongoing hvac so uh excellent business partner page 13 second from the bottom you see aed servicing we've got about 20 21 units defibrillators throughout the district they are serviced by zoll medical corporation obviously extremely important extreme important part of our business and if you go to page 15 on the top cj vanderbeck services all our boilers inspections does all the cleaning the servicing and really sets us up for the inspection from the state and chub and that's essentially how we get insured for all our boilers obviously if you can't heat your buildings everything else doesn't doesn't really matter much uh page 16 middle paragraph you see american fire and safety they inspect and certify all our fire extinguishers in the schools and also in all our buses extremely important part of our business again page 17 in the middle you see interstate and toms they do all our maintenance and repairs on our buses as you know we have 23 or 24 buses they essentially keep our pretty much keep our fleet uh rolling very fair excellent business partner and let's see i think that's pretty much it mr almadino unless anyone has any specific questions in regard to the reorganization uh lou um for the record that steve fogerty represent the board again as a attorney yes yes steve's in there all your professional services in there dr patriliano it's your auditors yes uh yeah let's take a look let's see bear with me let's see and you have your auditors and you have yours on page 19.

[Music] good evening everyone so let me start off we have a number of recognitions we'd like to talk about this evening and let me just before we get started we have three very important people i'd like to serve as the people who's going to introduce them um one miss dana perez we'd like to recognize this evening for middle school assistant principal of the year um please don't stand up you have to do anything the next group we would like to recognize and that is jill russell better on behalf of all of our music teachers with another music education award that she's going to talk about shortly and then of course the voice for change award and we're going to ask mr dan donovan to help us recognize the teacher and many students who have been awarded by not only a commission of education but also the students of connecticut and then dr casamaro i'm going to ask to recognize jill russell so if we can start with our wonderful principle in our own right dr christie zelita and to come up in girls would you mind switching place with dr zelita and um [Music] but also the teachers students and staff in the building earlier this year i was thrilled to be able to nominate ms perez and was over the moon when i heard that she had been selected to represent throughout the entire state of connecticut the middle level as this difference goal of the year when i was filling out the nomination application packet i was asked to reflect on the ways in which data helped influence and shape aspects of the school with respect to our school's culture and the manner by which she fosters well-being and safety so students and adults learn and interact productively i shared how she was instrumental in helping us transition the building toward a more restorative approach to discipline that plagued the school prior to our starting as the administrative team four years ago she had experience in training in positive behavioral interventions and support for pbis and together we attended restorative practices training in the summer we worked to develop a year-long professional development plan and for the school and to this day continue to build the capacity of our staff and align our work and decisions to support this approach utilizing her previous training she also began a school climate transformation group that met to discuss our school-wide information system swiss the discipline referral data along with our student and staff surveys she facilitated the group's development of our building-wide expectations and in an effort to address the disparities that existed in our discipline practices this work prior to co-closure we dramatically decreased the number of students being suspended improve the manner in which teachers reacted to situations with students and received positive feedback from parents and the community for the changes we are going to get back to that someday i think we all are working towards that once we get out of this current situation when reflecting on mount dana embeds the needs of teacher excuse me the needs of each student as a guiding value to inform organizational decision making i share how this person works closely with me to compile a team of administrators from both the building and the district levels to complete a deep dive into our english language students language proficiency data she also as a primary evaluator for our esl bilingual teachers conducted observations and teaching practices and found that many were slowing the pace down not asking higher order thinking questions these observations along with the use of primary teacher-led instruction supported her hypothesis that teachers weren't holding the students to high levels of expectation she presented her findings and then took the lead on working with the department and the teachers to reimagine our new arrivals program to be more inclusive she also helped to coordinate additional sign up account training for esl and corey area teachers through our title 1 funds last year so they could better meet the needs of all of our students in their classrooms her insight and passion for doing what is right for all students were invaluable in making the needed changes to the program and as a side note or dissertation work at fordham is focusing on esl work when asked them to reflect on how dana leads the learning in our school so that each learner student and adult will succeed in a globally competitive society i shared how mrs perez never stops learning reflecting or pushing herself outside of her comfort zone in order to continuously improve she shares this knowledge freely and inspires others to do the same i read four books over the break because she didn't get a chance reading that and she thought i should read them one way she has put into put this into action at the building level is through our creation of instructional leadership teams multiple teams were created to look at math ela ell and school climate by doing so we were able to involve more teachers in the process prior to covert closures she created comprehensive year-long plans to have coverage for teachers to not only look at data but also to discuss effective teaching practices do peer observation look at student work and work as a team to develop our school improvement plan through the focus on determining the problems of practice developing plans to address them and supporting teachers as key members of these teams she helped build the capacity of both teachers and students when asked then to reflect upon how dana has empowered students and adults in our school community to assume leadership roles to promote each person's learning and well-being i shared how she has played a primary role in empowering students to use their voices to advocate for themselves and take active roles in their education in rogers park she compiled a group of students called the student ambassadors that act as our student liaisons with administration and panelists for various events they're even holding training for our teachers in may she facilitated a welcoming walkthrough prior to the ones we're doing right now four years ago when we first started working together as a team with the students to help us gain a student perspective we implemented many of their suggestions in addition to including teachers on our leadership team she's also been the point person at our school for our nyu teacher residency program she has helped select the mentor teachers and that we have chosen each year the two years that we've been participating and has been able to support not only our veteran teachers but also works very closely with our pre-service candidates most recently she has been the key facilitator in our ready for rigor plc with the bar foundation she has been collaborating with three more building teachers who are participating and they will be playing a key role as we move our school forward in our journey to become more culturally responsive i cannot say enough and you all know i can talk and that was cut down i cannot say enough about how amazing dana is and any of you that know her know that i'm not at all stretching the truth i am absolutely honored to have her as a partner in this crazy journey and we are on our way to our platinum rhythm because blue just ain't good so i only have one page and i would like to say thank you thank you so much um i would like to thank dr christie zalia for nominating me for this award not only for nominating me for this award but honestly seeing something in me that i didn't even see in myself when she hired me for this position four years ago um additionally i would like to thank the superintendent kevin walston along with the entire cabinet and the board of education for constantly supporting me every single day in his role as assistant principal and as an educator in the danbury public school system i would be remiss if i did not thank my family for always standing by my side even when i decided to add a non-profit to my long list of things that i'm already doing in my daily basis um and lastly but most importantly not least i would like to thank the rogers park community honestly while this award has my name on it it is a representation of their hard work and dedication to our students every single day the park also known as rogers to our students is a special place where we make dreams happen and all ideas even christy's ideas come to fruition as long as it's in support of our students and so this award is really more for our school than it is for myself i consider myself privileged to work at rogers park middle school considered myself honored to be a member of the danbury public school community and i'm humbled to have been given this award so thank you [Applause] one before we ask you to step up again to take a picture um on behalf of the cabinet in the danbury school community i want to thank you for your service and your commitment to our students to our staff and our families we we didn't need an outside group to come in and tell us how wonderful you are but i am so happy to see that you and i with this award thank you so much so we're going to come over here the highlight of your night oh we need someone with a camera that's nice so our next award and this person has been before us once before um on behalf of the danbury music community but dan barry has been named recipient of the danbury public excuse music education program honored with best communities for music education designation from the namm foundation and the damn foundation is the national association of music merchants and dr casamiro is going to say a couple of words about children good evening um so we do want to congratulate you jill and now this is a multiple years in a row winning the best communities in music education with the damn foundation i just want to tell everybody a little bit about some of the work that jill does in the background um jill has been relentlessly pursuing grants um how many years now probably at five minutes let's say five or six years now and what that grant does is it puts instruments into the hands of our students who otherwise would not be able to afford instruments and or lessons and so over the last five or six years the amount of programming that has built up around in our schools as a result of jill's efforts has been incredible and so you you see any of our programming or sometimes we do a little spotlight of your schools you'll see tons of musical programming kids playing instruments uh and in general uh bolstered music rituals and programs um that has resulted as a testimony to her leadership and the work that she's done with her team so we can't thank you enough it's no shock as to why we received more now multiple years in a row but um vh1 saved the music has been a partner uh with us um but jill's constant pursuit of the grants um and putting all the pieces in place to make this happen is one of the reasons why we've been awarded two years congratulations [Applause] um thank you thank you so much i truly believe this is a testament only to us as the school district in the community but also to our teachers and our students um this award this year in the survey that we took was really really based around resilience and perseverance i think we can all agree that every educator here and across the country that's exactly what we've been doing um so again i can't i can't speak highly enough about our staff and the hard work we finally made some great lists otherwise we are one of 730 uh districts nationwide to receive this and we are 27 out of 169 in connecticut we are both 27 school districts in canada to receive this as well the surveys based on our student demographics our facilities classroom availabilities graduation requirements budgeting etc and um and with this and with the support of the nan foundation who in turn supports the music foundation and little kids rock and spread music now and the folks that were kind enough to work with us we've been able to increase our enrollment at the instrumental level to about 1250 students this year um coming off of an interesting couple of years so that's that's a lot of little ones a lot of boys thank you parents happening in your home so um thank you thank you very much for supporting what we do and for helping us keep trying a lot and on saturdays may 21st please join us for our hooray code festival that we are finally able to just wonderful to open the doors back up everywhere opportunity um it's going to be from 11 support at broadway middle school here we're going to have some great ice cream as well um and we have a lot of performances we have almost all of our elementary schools are combining for choir and thank you [Applause] so and jill thanks again for promoting coded event on may 21st thank you so much last but not least an opportunity to recognize the students and the students who led them to this amazing participation statewide mr dan donovan has a couple of words for us with the teacher and his students who have won some big time serious awards at the state level thanks mr donald thank you uh your calls probably about two months ago i stood in front of you at black box and talked about a voice for change project that came out from the state that kevin introduced to us involved students making projects that they felt would help gamer high school so out of that we got basically 13 projects we did a all school voting on the projects and the one that won the most amount of votes and getting danbury high school students to sometimes do things as a little bit challenging maybe we had over 2 400 votes which is a huge number for us for our winning project which was the change out of the water fountains all the students felt that changing from traditional water fountains to the bottom fillers are both responsible and clean their way to do things and uh nancy come on up yeah oh that was liam sorry [Music] they won the student vote part of this their project and they're going to talk to you about a little bit about the process you're just going to shake your hands what you do so we presented a video to uh classmates and we created a uh you know an example of how long it takes to get water at dhs and you know provide it with the and it was a little bit confusing to our our students with high school because we went in probably like four different videos i just came in and every single day all the students made [Music] all voted for it and that was the one that won the most as equally proud of is the commissioner herself had five awards that she gave out statewide uh just five of them and we had lucky enough to have another group win one of those awards and what the commissioners said when we had our little watch party in the auditorium when they did this kind of live on youtube was that uh you know this was the only one out of all of them that took the staff into account they the students felt they had to give back to our staff at danville high school which was uh redoing the teacher work room a teacher worker at the high school is made up of furniture that we acquire from different places any business that's going out calls us and we run whatever the truck grab we had to come back so uh they're gonna give us each one of these is gonna win twenty thousand dollars that we can use to spend so i'm gonna invite absolutely adam where are you nancy come on up and matt yeah come on matt you're up here too talk a little about your project come on over so we made a video in the poster interviews he spoke about what they thought was needed in the break room such as new tables new chairs like those portable charging stations they thought that having these new devices could also go around the classroom and help them just people prepared for the day or being able to leave their house they don't have to worry about their being charged all the time they have an accident or something you can always just charge your own room you know just have things on hand [Music] see they thought they were done like hey you know now they gotta spend time with me to go spend money so once we get that money we're gonna be spending it around our school which is you know one of those things that daniel high school is an older building and little things like that this go a long way so we really want them i'm very thankful for what they did now the entire leader of this whole entire thing is not kevin he's not me he's miss heather lorenz come on up here miss lorenz [Applause] saying hey let's try this email from ms lorenz saying why are we trying this and i said okay let's go and since that point she's taking control of this organizing everything from the posters to the videos mr miller was instrumental in putting those videos together as well for all of us and putting that all together putting out a student announcement so they could have a vote like i said all the students went into flex on monday and voted for it and it was uh it was great but you can speak about how this process went thank you for everything um so yeah so um i well i prepared everything that he said before so now i now now i'm running flat on the fly again i'm surprised the classroom so essentially and i spoke to the board once before this um essentially i took the project and i scaffolded it so that our students could write public policy i mean that's essentially what our students did um they range from seniors to sophomores that you see in this class you know in my class a lot of seniors and juniors but some sophomores also um and they ran with it i mean they i didn't have to i brainstormed with them i helped guide them here and there you know definitely the guide on the side um but they were the ones that did everything and i mean when when mr donovan mentioned the campaign video that liam and chaplain made i am telling you like a president could have run this video it was them swimming through the ocean climbing walking through the desert until they finally got to the water station because as of right now we have four water stations in a building of 3 300 students um 3 400 students sorry it's climbing every day um and and it spoke to the students the students saw the issue they saw the issue that the students were experiencing and then the students saw themselves in the video that they made which just shows you that that you can put on a great campaign and you can garner the votes and win and um they both had a vision for that from the beginning and it was really impressive in addition this group maybe my most humble group and yet they won the commissioner's award all the along they said we know we got my chance students aren't going to vote for us but you know we believe in this we believe that you guys deserve better meaning as the teachers and let me tell you the teachers they are established about the fact that they won the commissioner's award um so i just once again i want to thank superintendent walston and mr donovan thank you for this opportunity not just for myself because i gained a lot from it but for my kids to give them the opportunity to rise up as leaders in our community and take action and know that their action matters it may be the most powerful thing we can give them as students yeah i just did that um but you know i really believe that like in my heart so thank you thank you and this guy every single question that the kids had he made himself available by email 24 7.

this happen thank you so much you know in 1962 rachel carson wrote the book silent spring i was a kid and i got a chance to read that and that really helped set the stage and build momentum for the enviro what became the environmental movement i'm just going to read one little excerpt from rachel carlson in her 1962 book quote we stand now where two roads diverge but unlike the rhodes and robert frost's familiar poem they are not equally fair the road we have long been traveling is deceptively easy a smooth super highway on which we progress with great speed but at its end lies disaster the other fork of the road the one less traveled by offers our last our only chance to reach a destination that assures the preservation of the earth that's what's at stake here and that's what these grid green ribbon awards are all about we are taking the road less traveled the harder road but the road that is necessary to ensure the safety and security and prosperity of future americans our students like to also acknowledge though that this did not happen by itself this is truly an example of a community school effort involving students and teachers back to 2011 when the catella garden was first created 2014 in a partnership with north orange county rop beta that they built the first 10 planner beds 2016 catella was the recipient of a state drops grant which helped secure and captured 95 of rain water you realize in central and north orange county 75 percent of our water comes from underground because of the drought that's drying up but because of catella and the way it was constructed we capture a lot of that rainwater in 2018 through a partnership with our teachers union and asta grant we installed the first aquaponic beds along with magnolia high school that helped develop them as well 2019-2022 a partnership with anaheim public utilities and the a mentorships we were able to really expose students to issues around energy and electricity and then in 2020 cal catella received the state bronze award 2021 the civil award and 2022 here we are today so on behalf of our board of trustees our 29 000 students and their families we're very grateful to the state of california for this wonderful wonderful accomplishment thank you very much and at this point i'd like to invite up our board president mr al jabbar [Applause] all right how's everybody doing this morning all right well so good morning to everyone who is uh not only here what a concept live right and also everybody who's joining uh live stream i am the proud president of the anaheim union high school district board of trustees my name is al jabar before i introduce the california chief deputy superintendent mary nicely to deliver her keynote speech i would like to highlight with you just some of the reasons why catella high school is being honored today for their innovative efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs improve health and wellness and ensure effective sustainability education catella high school models and educates students about the importance of being stewards of environment through the improvements of educational programs catella high school sustainable garden and learning center which you can tour after the ceremony serves as a place to extend teaching and learning in context with hands-on activities science courses use the site for lab experiments in soil quality testing and seed germination and water cycle katella connects students with green careers by partnering with anaheim's innovative mentoring experience program and the city of anaheim public utilities mentors work with students to inform and prepare them for what is needed to work for the city of anaheim in various green careers such as urban planning electrical engineering for energy conservation water conservation strategies and waste management in 2016 catello is a recipient of the state's drought response outreach program for schools grant the work funded by the grant established catella as a water reclamation site designated to collect filter and recycle water from storms irrigation and cleanup in addition the campus landscape was upgraded to native plant species drought tolerant shrubs tree vegetative bios walls and sand pathways the school's catella talks program provides all students the opportunity to conduct research create speech and present on the subject of these choice fellow students judge the talks for selection to be recorded and put on youtube since the program's beginning in 2015 there has been a significant increase in talks that focus on environmental issues and sustainability including human population growth in climate change and recycling as you can see there is much to celebrate today and there is no doubt as to why cattella high school is being honored today now without further ado i am proud and it's my pleasure to introduce mary nicely as chief deputy superintendent of public instruction at the california department of education she is responsible for the overall operations and administration of seven branches and implementation of key initiatives identified by the superintendent of public instruction tony thurman including recruitment and retention of teachers of color community schools educator housing and public and private partnership with philanthropy and industry ms nicely also oversees the information and technology branch leading efforts to modernize the department's technology systems she supports the state superintendent's digital divide task force working with internal and external constituents technology companies and major internet providers throughout the state to close the technology clap impacting students and educators for that we thank you thank you very much senior advisor since 2019 sorry prior to her appointment as chief deputy mary worked as the cde as the superintendent senior advisor since 2019.

friends began as a non-profit organization supporting public libraries we then expanded to support school libraries and then expanded again to support teachers reading specialists sorry i lost my place ela new teachers and reading coaches and everything literacy related we now support 37 schools in three school districts in addition to the public libraries in both el mirage and surprise we're here um the friends group has has really had an opportunity and you have some media in front of you that i dropped off so you could take a look at all the things that we do one of the things is the bookmark contest that was mentioned just earlier so that's one things that we provide working with dr kellis has made my job being president of friends of the surprise library easier than it had been before we've had a chance together to work with teachers and students in almost every school in the dysart district and friends has been able to provide two hundred and ninety two thousand four hundred and three dollars and eighty two cents in approved books and other media to classrooms within dysart additionally we've been able to allow teachers access to grade appropriate books and magazines free in our bookstore in the amount of 10 456 items just so that you know all of these items that are donated or received for your teachers are all reported appropriately to the finance department uh francie gets an email from us all the time i'm actually grateful to be able to be working with dr kellis over these years and want to let him know how much friends of the surprise libraries appreciates his leadership and how much we have appreciated having such a great partnership with dysart and i hope to look forward to another ongoing and long relationship thank you thank you next we'll move on to superintendent governing board update i understand we don't have a student update tonight so we'll move on to superintendent update dr kalis thank you madam president members of the board and members of cabinet i'd first like to extend a a great acknowledgement to our friends of luke air force base last week was the purple up for kids of military families and this is an opportunity where many of the service member family's children who are attend dysert are recognized for the work that their parents do at the base and it's not just at luke air force base it's for all military but specifically um there are some planned activities with with luke air force base luke air force base is the largest training base in the world and dysart is more than happy to welcome any family member who serves our country as well as everybody else but we just want to send out a huge shout out to our service member families and their kids who are part of dysert i also want to acknowledge um dysart heroes who are recognized last week at a special ceremony we appreciate you all who were the investor heroes recipients and shortly thereafter there's a special the next day uh dice education foundation ceremony i just want to give another shout out to the dicer education foundation for the great work that they do in supporting our students with scholarships and also a special shout out to our very own louisa brown today is national administrative professionals day and she is the board's executive assistant as well as the superintendent i'd like to thank you for all the work that you do for dysert all right thanks to move to governing board update we'll go ahead and start congratulations lisa that's amazing thank you for all that you do and at a minimum just putting up with the five of us is in and of itself so i appreciate you um i too attended the dysart heroes awards ceremony and it was just wonderful to sit and listen to all the kind words shared by the peers of all the recipients that's just heartwarming to to hear um from those that actually work with them one-on-one i mean we we can hear stories from time to time in general about how amazing our staff are but to actually hear those detailed accounts of what they do every day to make to rise them that hero status was just a pleasure to be a part of that so i was glad to attend that um and then this sunday i attended the induction of valley vista high school girls basketball coach rachel matakas into the arizona high school coaches hall of fame it was just an amazing moment for her if anybody as every people know she's not just a an amazing basketball coach she's just a phenomenal person that just has um an ability to have such a positive impact on the lives of students in more ways than one so it was just a beautiful afternoon for her and i wish her congratulations and then i understand we're having a lot of end of year celebrations and concerts i'm looking forward to our valley vista high school choir concert which i believe is both tomorrow and friday so i'm hoping i can attend one of those two performances and encourage everyone else to attend we have so many talented students in all of our high schools in elementary and middle schools now and now the time is the end of the year is when we get to enjoy all their talents so i'm looking forward to that that's all i have anyone else a couple of things i also attended the dysart heroes ceremony and it quite honestly and just like ms pritchard said it is a great time to see our dysart heroes shine just love being a part of that evening of their recognition also attended the superintendent's classified and the certified staff advisory councils these were the last ones for the year so thank you to all staff that attends to take the information back to their individual schools i think dr kellis failed to mention that he was also named the honorary chairman chairman honorary uh base commander for luke air force base so he got to fly in an f-16 and uh i did warn him make sure you don't eat breakfast before you go up and you did not right okay so congratulations that's an extreme honor to be uh recognized as an honorary commander uh attended the a couple of the cip presentations uh thank you to the schools that presented uh also attended the uh fourth annual uh dysart education foundation scholarship awards uh i believe there were 17 recipients 68 thousand dollars of scholarships uh to these uh great seniors that will be going on and continuing their education after they leave dysart so thank you to billy laird and uh donya davis say for everything that they've done also attended the willow canyons musical crazy for you the young lady that came up here she did the entire play in a wheelchair and she did a phenomenal job the entire cast did a phenomenal job so thank you to mr walgreen for bringing that ex the imagination and the creativity uh to all of us and just like miss pritchett said there are so many end of the year celebrations and the concerts and the dance recitals and so many you don't need to have a child that's in dysart to enjoy some good singing some good dancing and and instruments and um musicals and the kids want to show off what they have been working on all year so please find a school get an audience and just cheer them on um last but not least yes uh dr kellis alluded that today is administrative professionals actually it's a week you guys all have a week but today is the day so thank you to um miss brown for yes putting up with the five of us actually six and that's dr kellis but she and all the other administrative professionals in the district go above and beyond every day they're the ones that actually run the district so next week i believe is teacher appreciation week hug a teacher thank a teacher and wish them luck for the rest of the school year and that's about it mine's really short after that um i did attend a couple of the cip presentations as well um also the dysart hero ceremony which is the congratulations to all the heroes in the district well deserved and then i also went to the dysart education foundation award ceremony and congratulations to the 17 seniors that received scholarships that was it was really wonderful to hear their stories that's it anyone else i'd also like to express my appreciation for miss brown um and not only just putting up with the board and dr kellis but really this whole district so thank you i mean i think you get the brunt of almost everything so i appreciate you and i know that many many people appreciate you um and speaking of appreciation i also attended the dysart heroes event and again it's just you know ditto what everyone else has already said but just just hearing the individual stories about the recognition from um from the hero's peers is just really um a beautiful night um hearing those stories and really appreciate all of what dysart employees do and that's it thank you luisa [Laughter] all right next we'll move on to item e motion to approve consent agenda items i move the governing board approved consenogen items as presented motion made by christine pritchard seconded by joe grant i did it right this time motion carries next we'll move to item g information discussion one information on interventions to promote student growth and improving academics at tidal schools dr kellis thank you madam president members of the board and members of cabinet dr pauline will introduce this item good evening madam president members of the board cabinet and community it's my pleasure to introduce kathy hill director of federal projects and amy hartson director of research and they will present on this item good evening man and president members of the governing board superintendent kellis and cabinet thank you for the opportunity to share some information about our title one schools and the intervention programs that we have there so if you take a look at this slide there's some important information that i want to just draw your attention to so students that come from our higher socioeconomic status homes they have life experiences that students from lower ses homes don't have an example would be visiting a museum or perhaps going to the zoo their parents or and families have the opportunity to take them places that sometimes children who don't have those opportunities i mean they just they don't have those opportunities afforded to them so because of that their children who have a lower ses they don't have a certain they don't have the schema to make those some of the connections when they get to school now please know that these are not excuses we want to just explain some of the the the realities of what we see in our in our title schools and then on the last bullet what i want to make note is that it's not the it's not the number of words that they know it's the number of words that they hear so if you'll allow me just a moment to illustrate with a brief example so a child who is imagine a family member is cooking dinner and you have two different two different homes one there is a student that comes from a lower socioeconomic background and so they've asked for a cookie before dinner and this is the answer they receive no now another home where it is uh more of a a professional home or a middle what we would call middle class home what you may hear is this same question may i have a cookie before dinner you know that you cannot have a cookie before dinner and i'm going to tell you why you're going to spoil your appetite and i want you to eat all of these the vegetables that i'm making for you all of this great food that is going to make you strong after you eat all of your dinner or whatever you know after you eat your dinner then you may have a cookie so you can see the number of words that the student in the first home heard as compared to the student in the second home just as a brief example and something else to consider is that oral language development is inextricably linked to literacy development if you don't hear the words you can't say the words if you can't say the words you can't read the words so that is just an important point to to remember what we want to share briefly is that how we choose our intervention programs is based on our school improvement process so our schools work through a comprehensive needs assessment which asks certain questions and ex asks what are the needs of your school and the the schools then determine what are the most important needs that they need to work on they conduct a root cause analysis then they write out their integrated action plan so then what i have to do for for our district plan is then look at all of those trends and patterns and determine what the greatest needs are so then we see that there may be a need for some um and and i'm speaking from from our background when when we have our students who are in high school and they're english learners and they come to us i cannot put a program that's intended for younger children in front of them so we have to look what are going to be those programs that are going to be appropriate to teach students the skills that they need so we do that very collaboratively and we write that into our district action plan so it's all done in a in a very collaborative way then what we do is when we have these intervention programs we are sure to provide professional development so everyone understands how to implement that program with fidelity but also understand is this program going to meet the needs of the student who's in front of me because intervention programs are not it's not a one size fits all i could be a sixth grader who doesn't have any phonics or phonemic awareness and i'm going to need something different than the sixth grader who's struggling with comprehension so just some of those important points to think about as would provide that professional development on how best to use and choose those resources okay and i'm going to turn it over to miss harton and she's going to talk to you about some data i'm going to move this up just a little bit good evening um so the first piece we wanted to show you is from our kinder data from the very beginning of this year and this kind of demonstrates the point that kathy was talking about about the difference of life experiences and prior no prior knowledge that students enter our schools with so on the left you can see um from our dibbles data the left-hand side is our title one schools and the right-hand side is our non-title um schools the number listed is the average number of letters uppercla uppercase and lowercase letters that the students were able to identify at the start of the year so dibbles is one of the first tests that our kinder kindergartners take and you can see the difference in the average numbers that our title one students come in knowing and our non-title one students know you saw some of a piece of this data last week two weeks ago when i did our data we showed the beginning of the year and middle of the year this is one of those tests that is part of the kindergarten kindergarten composite score but it's the really simple identification of whether or not they know their letters when they arrive the other piece um this looks very similar to you for you from our last data presentation this one is exactly the same i've highlighted our two um title schools that are k4 and our two title schools that are middle school you can see here once again as a reminder that those growth points were that scale score growth and the expectation of the amount of points the students would earn from benchmark one to benchmark three um you can see in um the k4s in reading all 4 k-4s title and non-title met their growth expectation and you can see that um all of them had an increase from benchmark 1 to benchmark 3.

so starting a day late doesn't really make that much of a difference as far as the calendar is concerned it just pushes the day further in june so that calendar will be posted to the website uh tomorrow for parents to look at there's a copy in your photo tonight and there is a a resolution to approve that that change in the calendar okay before i look at the consent agenda uh any questions from the public no nothing okay um so any committee reports you may want to give an update on the building and grounds i know that the gym floor is in and uh yeah i know you had a meeting that unfortunately yeah they did the gym gym fall everybody gets a chance take a look at the high school gym floor boy it looks fan it looks fantastic we're finishing up some you know duck work lining the volleyball lines that was all happening today so we're we're in the home stretch our goal is obviously we're gonna have substantial completion sometime in may so if it does rain on uh hopefully it doesn't happen on graduation we can have folks go into the gym we also had our 2223 capital projects bid opening on april 26 it was five contracts directionally right now it looks like the five contract fell within our budget constraints the five contracts are now with mr fogerty uh i've requested that mr fogerty hopefully review them and send me some award language by next wednesday and then i will ask the board we may have a special zoom meeting shortly thereafter to award those bids so we can kind of kick start the process start our pre-construction meetings so we can kind of be off and running once school is over in regard to we have two really two roof replacement projects with masonry one at the high school one at number six called the elementary side we are renovating the high school administrative offices the hr and secretaries we are replacing uh several high school stair tower doors those are the big security metal doors we are also repairing uh above our cafeteria door that faces the field it's a i call it a lentil project it's some loose masonry that really is a really a safety concern that we're going to be doing also so we have a lot of large projects with tight timelines for this summer so the earlier we can get the bids awarded the project's awarded the earlier we can have a pre-construction meeting and maybe we can start some early demo and kick start the project so we have we have a fighting chance to get everything done by the time uh surrounding was a september 8th it's when everybody's back students yeah students are back and i guess the teachers have backed several things of course right so that's pretty much kind of the buildings and grounds update mr alfano can you make a request i would love to see pictures of the gym floor because i don't know if i can get over there sure is there any chance maybe you know even if it's preliminary you can take some pictures and maybe send them out on the instagram account or you know on the website or something because i would love to see the gym floor in with those volleyball lines and i want to thank you because i know that this has been not an easy process yes but the fact that we're going to have a gym floor and an air-conditioned gym and you know hopefully 50 years into the future the improvements that were made this year even though it's painful because we've got delayed a lot the fact that it's going to be there and it's going to support so many generations of students to come thank you and great thank you dr patrick what's unique about this is that many other school districts have to go to the tax levy and ask for a referendum or dollars here in cliffside park with the great board our superintendent and yourself and the public were able to do all these projects with capital reserve dollars and being fiscally responsible and that's kudos to this board you know for for doing that and to our professionals that work for us so that makes me very very proud when we can do a 1.5 million dollar project that does not impact the taxpayer that's important and to piggyback that on mr capano over the last uh nine years we're about 21 22 million dollars in capital projects that have been solely funded by capital reserve surplus where we didn't have to go out for a referendum and put bonus on the on the taxpayer again this coming summer alone the projects i just mentioned are probably total close to four million dollars that we're going to be engaging in so like i said all the support from the board the public the staff is greatly appreciated kudos to you and mr romancino i appreciate that thank you i'd like to give a report i'm not sure how much i can say but we have been having negotiations with the teachers union and from my standpoint it's been going extremely well i want to thank them for their professionalism and all that they're bringing to the table and i want to most certainly thank mr o'gino mr fogerty for representing this board and the students of cookside park so well and i'm very happy to say that i believe that when the contract ends we will have a new one in place or be very close to having everyone in place and i know that that was a goal of this board that we treat our employees fairly and then we have a contract in place for them and i believe that will happen so i want to thank everyone and i want to thank the teachers for their part in the negotiations you know i'm excited it's great that come to fruition thank you any other committee reports okay if not i would like to just go through a couple of items in the regular agenda uh page two um as always we are approving um some of our staff members attending uh workshops reimbursing them for registration fees and for travel expenses we do that each month uh usually the list is a lot longer but it's getting better with covid hopefully getting to the point where now people can go out of the district and attend in-person workshops as compared to doing everything remotely or virtually we are also approving angelo alvin who stipend for serving as our title one coordinator for this past school year angelo does a lot of work with our title one teachers across the district and the stipend is well deserved carly brighanti who had served with us as a part-time title one teacher at school three is moving into a full-time or has already moved into a full-time kindergarten teacher for the remainder of this year to replace the teacher who recently resigned page three third resolution down we are accepting the resignation of caitlyn burke who was previously appointed as a non-certificated school nurse she has rescinded her appointment anne-marie wagner who is a social worker with our child study team we are approving a unpaid medical leave from april 25th and will return back to school april 26th i wish anne-marie well jackie amaya title one teacher at school number five we're approving her maternity leave which will start in september uh jackie will return on or about january 17th of 2023 uh below that are celia de phillips teacher at school number four she also works on our after school program maternity leave she will also be leaving beginning of september and will also return somewhere around january 18 2023 i wish both of them good luck page four we are approving uh as we do every year our summer school teachers uh this year and i'll talk more about this at our next meeting but summer school will begin on june 27th a four-week program ends july 22nd in addition to our summer school program which we are running for uh students in grades pre-k through 12 actually we will be hosting some students from fairview who will be coming to our middle school program they pay a small tuition our students attend our summer school program for a registration fee of twenty dollars and those students are recommended so uh the first group of teachers that you see on the list are working in our summer school program across all of our schools uh the second group of teachers i'm sorry the second group of individuals are our teacher aides who will be assisting in our special ed classes and in some of our kindergarten classes uh top of page five we will also be running our summer enrichment program in fact in your brochure and the new bourgeois in your folder is a brochure that just outlines some of our summer school summer enrichment programs this year things like coding science experiments steam gifted and talented engineering some cooking classes so we always get a good turnout of students that begins august 1st and it runs through august 22nd uh parents will be getting that brochure next week and they can sign up for those programs uh so at the top of page five we are approving uh a list of teachers who will be teaching in that summer enrichment program i thank that i thank them for their participation barbara vitale will be uh teaching art part-time in our summer school uh linda ludwikowski will be our summer school director uh and in charge of our 21st century after school program tom mandeel who is our football coach as tom does every year will be running a summer weightlifting program so we do have a number of summer programs going on uh beginning june 27th and like i had mentioned i'll talk more about those programs with the board at our main meeting uh page six uh chiro spinella is going to be once again our district-wide integrated pest management coordinator which is a uh which is mandated by the state so we are approving him tonight uh on page seven uh second resolution down we are notifying by letter as mandated by the state by may 15 all non-tenure teachers of their renewal for september i should say they're non-renewal for september and again that's a formality and in most cases 99.9 of those teachers who we give a non-renewal to we then reappoint in june at our june meeting uh people that have been on the board know that we go through this process each year we are adding a half day to our um june 7th tuesday june 7th will be a half day that was not originally on the calendar that's the primary day so we are letting students out of school at one o'clock so people that do come to vote there will not be kids in school our staff will remain that day for a staff and service and we do that every year but this year it was left off the calendar so i'm adding it to the agenda uh we do we did have two hiv cases that were investigated this month and as per state law we are including them on our agenda and on page eight we have um just uh a list of all of our summer programs that we'll be running this year the county uh would likes us to approve those programs and we send the county a list of all the programs that are running over the summer so on page eight it's outlined what we're actually doing and the dates uh under policies and procedures we are submitting our comprehensive equity plan it actually was a three-year plan that was that was submitted three years ago but as per law each year we just uh signed a statement of assurance that goes to our county superintendent so again page 9 is just a formality and 10 are buildings and grounds requests by staff members pto pta for use of buildings and that's on page 10.

when we look at our middle schools that expected growth was 21 so two um our two title schools met expected growth our two non-title schools did not meet expected growth so although their overall proficiency scores are a little bit lower they did meet those learning expectations they had that amount of expected growth from benchmark 1 to benchmark 3. this is our title k-8s and our non-title k-8 so the top half of the page shows you our um title 1k 8 schools and their reading benchmark scores and our um bottom shows you the non-title 1k8s and their reading benchmark scores um the expected growth for them was 26. so when you look at our growth um those pieces we have um four of the six title schools met growth and three of the non um three of the six non-title schools met growth the title one um proficiency range for benchmark three was between 19 and 41 and there's an overlap with our non-title schools of 37 to 58 so you can see that there is there is a discrepancy in those but um we did have more title 1 schools make that growth expectation when we look at math um we're back to our k4 and um middle school models the k4 expected growth was 67 and our middle school expected growth was 45.

second segmented by joe any discussion seeing none all those in favor please signify by saying aye any opposed any abstention one extension motion still carries brings us to the superintendent's report thank you thank you this opportunity i'd like to start out with we have a guest in the audience this evening another one of our superstar principals in the audience and this is principal john weber and when john a couple of months ago i'm committed to coming in and following up and providing some more details about joe heaven day and ace and john you have the mike and thank you for joining us this evening sure thanks for having me um it was impressive seeing the the dhs students and dana and i was whispering to the two ace reps when jill came up i said that's jill that's the reason why you have instruments ace in cops and pulse music class so they didn't realize they didn't put two and two together um but they need to know that so thank you joe um so so everybody here i'm pretty sure uh knows joe knew joe probably in various capacities because if you had to talk about the different uh organizations joe was involved with it'd be much easier to say like which ones he wasn't involved with because it was like three in danbury and he was involved in every other organization in denver um but joe was the founding member you know founding father of ace and uh 1977 and i was asked by the news tags here what what did show give to ace like joe joe was i mean there there wouldn't be an ace without joe because it was pretty cutting edge in the you know in the mid 70s to come up and work and create an alternative program and it is it's evolved over the years but um i think the one thing that a lot of the staff do is we kind of have this question in our head when you're working with each other when you're working with students or with families and communities like this is how joe would have done it you know which would you have done it this way would he have said this thing um and that's that's that's kind of how i've tried to operate um so what we thought we would do last year was doing in-house joe pepin celebration joe's birthday is may 16th and so last year we did morgan in-house thing where we had a bulletin board we had quotes we had students writing letters uh to joe who students now didn't know who joe was so you have to do a lot of building the foundation of ace um and so so joe passed you know this winter uh late winter and so it kind of rekindled the idea that we really need to teach the kids now who joe was and why joe believed the things that he believed so we've been working on things like collecting photos and in the main hallway there's an ace timeline now that goes from 1977 up to current and the ace students are trying to decipher which photos go from which years based on different records we have in graduation lists and talking to teachers about which kids are which kids and what year so it's it's going to be pretty neat by the time may 14th rolls around so on may 14th we're going to have a bbq down in ace it's on facebook now it's one to four it's going to be outside i've got a tent coming not going to cost any money i got a you know bouncy house coming for kids i want alumni to bring kids i want the alumni to meet with each other uh to meet with former staff with current staff i'll be cooking burgers and dogs on there everybody who's sitting here is welcome to calm down no cost uh i just talked to uh daniel vargo over vision yesterday so we're making these kind of like joe pepin jerseys that we'll be selling there it kind of will look like the yankees t-shirts and have the i say yankees i'm sure every team has a little advice that has the name of the player on the back with the number and then the number underneath the name pep it will be 77 so that's the year he started and that's that's kind of the idea for that um but i'm hoping if there are questions that anybody wants to ask about today feel free any questions from board members i'm just wondering john if you are in need of any donations of any kind for the barbecue or any other parts of this donations are always side dishes how about dessert desserts even better just yeah let me know i'll donate the ice cream thank you yeah class uh if you can't attend the affair on the 14th will you be able to get a t-shirt absolutely so the thought was when i talked to danny um we're going to have 50 on sale the day of then we can sell them because he'll have already created the shirt we can just have him print up a new batch okay so absolutely absolutely thank you um and you know joe's family is involved too we have family members with joe who are coming up from north carolina just for the day um joe's daughter got spoke at the services and did a really nice job of talking about the connection between joe and ace and ace and joe's family um so we'll have the pa set up outside we'll have people be able to share we're gonna have different tables set up too because you know unfortunately joe wasn't the only person that you lost excuse me at ace is this winner and over over the course of several years so we want to have a like a memorial table where people can come up and they can write memories about other ace family members that we've lost so we'll have a couple of different tables set up for things like that along with you know the fun activities joe's a big volleyball guy so we'll have volleyball games going on and you know different face painting for kids bouncy house for kids and stuff like that so we'll kind of try to try to have a little bit of everything in our jail because that's what joe would have helped yes i'll just you know i'd like to add joe pepin i did not have an opportunity to meet him certainly looking forward to meeting his family and his former students i'm thinking he'd be very proud of how that school has developed over the years number one but two i think he'd be particularly proud of the principal who's leading that building right now so we want to thank you for your service to our students in our school community thank you it's i mean those many of you know the staff mates but they go above and beyond like the the day never really ends i mean i get texts from teachers who are at the er with a kid because the parent couldn't be there i mean they just the staff is amazing so it's it makes it a lot easier when you're working with people like that thank you very much thanks sean we'll see you at 14.

unfortunately of a bit of a lack of stewardship by past generations from wildfires in our frontier regions to sea level rise along our coastlines to pour air quality in our valleys to the most prevalent drought your schools make learning relevant to students through the context of environmental stewardship it utilizes inquiry-based learning which then leads to action in our local solid waste program to reduce waste and increase food recovery and donation students collected data about how much food was being shared during the lunch period by tallying and categorizing how much how many food share items were put on the and taken from the lunch room share table the school science curriculum teaches students about agriculture through hands-on activities in the two outdoor garden instruction areas in addition all first through fifth grade students at altamonte creek receive instructional time in the school's garden accompanied by california next generation science standard aligned lessons taught in their classroom or school science lab one more time one more round of applause for that [Applause] good morning everyone um i am andrea tapia i'm the proud principal of altamonte creek in livermore california the california green ribbon school program has been a road map for us in our journey in sustainable practices and providing us guidance on how we can further reduce our environmental impact as a school and improve the health and wellness of our students and staff while effectively teaching environmental education for us this truly has been a collaborative effort from the start we are fortunate to have many community partners in the bay area that dedicate their time for example the alameda county waste management authority provides additional resources that result in reducing weight food waste by more than 1.3 tons per year the alameda excuse me the altima education advisory board has provided funds to install touchless hydration stations so that students and staff have the ability to reuse bring their reusable water bottles and try to promote water rather than sort of the our sugary drinks we also have an incredibly supportive superintendent in school district our district has been very open and willing to support any new green initiatives with their support we've establi established an idol-free zone in the school pickup area which reduces carbon gas emissions and improves the air quality in the area where our students congregate at the beginning and end of the day the school's green leadership council mostly of fifth graders is the think tank committed oh no hold on that's what happens when you use the ipad right instead of the compute is committed to environmental changes on campus this group of students previously met with our director of student nutrition to find ways to eliminate the use of utensil packets with straws napkins and the spork and replace it with specific individual items supplied using sanitary dispensers for items allowing the students to only get what they need for lunch as you walk around our elementary school campus of almost 600 students it's evidence students have an environmental lens in all they do from our dedicated green team comprised of students in grades first through fifth grade who support our garden and lunchroom waste to our individual students and families who pack their snacks and lunches using reusable materials to students always taking that extra second to consider which bin to put where their waste belongs our altamonte creek wildcats understand the importance of our environmental footprint in supporting mental health emotional and physical health the altamonte creek health wellness and safety committee provides activities that promote mindfulness and relaxation with meditation and yoga for staff and our students our tk through 5th grade students meet for cross-grade level mindfulness lessons as part of our fitness program the california green ribbon recognition is due in large part um to the effort dedication and enthusiasm of our science specialist fenaghati in closing we're thankful to the california green ribbon school resources and guidance in supporting our school district school site and encouraging us to keep focus on our aspirations and dreams and turning them into meaningful actions thank you [Applause] thank you so much
