once we're through that tunnel then we'll kind of need to see basically like what's the state's plan moving forward you know [Music] s2 definitely was the product of one political party let's just say right so so there are lots of factors that can happen within that you know different different circumstances different people in charge different landscape within our state could lead to chips and funding there have been districts that were underfunded before s2 that have seen their funding go up during s2 you know so so like could that could the pendulum swing back our way and our funding goes up after s2 that would make it a lot easier to uh afford to make full decay happen out of our regular budget so it's kind of like i can't it's almost like to i wish i could say more about what it would look like but there's too many different possibilities really the one thing i do know is that the one the one way that's entirely under our control in a sense is what we as a community want to do with the ballot question thank you very much dr smith hypership a quick question about the about the referendum the 1.7 million i don't know this answer and you might not know this answer but in terms of like the 1.7 million dollars recent school votes in terms of votes and referendum where would that be considerably to other to like other school districts i feel like this is lighter but i i can't remember yeah it is lighter it is lighter man it's not and and there are people can um ballot questions statewide are available publicly so a person could go and look and compare um sometimes about like in this case um like there's a neighboring district that used a ballot question for their full-day kindergarten it was part of a much larger ballot question that had um infrastructure improvements hvac and other factors that made the price tag go up a lot more um with that i don't want to that name and uh look you know no i deserve that yeah there's another local district that passed one last year that was um about 25 million that's okay yeah so that's what i was trying to because when i keep seeing this this number 1.7 million for a ballot question to me that feels generally pretty small uh i do remember i i know the one obviously another one last year but i could not remember the price tag i knew it was in the tens so 20 22 you said i think i would 25 25 okay and then typically a lot of the other school districts they like to they like to rump a lot of these things together so i just wanted to kind of bring out there that scope that in terms of a ballot question this is a rather rather small number in terms of what we're asking for here um and honestly like you're talking about the average average homeowner you're talking roughly 375 you know 3.75 cents a month in regards to the total where the numbers played out but i i totally agree with your assessment in terms of people are looking for full day kindergarten and the attractiveness of that i think is really important and i think and i do believe that that will increase increase home values and i think that will make eve shame an even more attractive place to live and i think that's a there's a higher price tag on that than i think is on that that lower that lower number that we would get through that ballot question so i i was just wanted to kind of get that comparison scope in terms of that versus what 25 million was somewhere else again just you know non-quoted quote but um in terms of the size and scope of what this was thank you hey joe one comment on that just some ballot questions are a one-time hit this would be 1.7 million plus more every year so if you took it over a 10-year period it really does have that kind of an impact so you know 25 million dollar fixed asset referendum ballot question saying for improvements it's just one time and then they pay the debt out over time but that's what also could make the dollar amount a little bit different when you saw that 25 million dollar ballot question that wasn't 25 million dollars every year in depth oh no i understand i understand no i do understand that i i i'm not uh i'm i i understand the continual cost no i agree i'm speaking i do appreciate the clarity there and i didn't i that was not my intention to confuse anybody who's watching this i was just talking about the size and scope of it but i do appreciate the clarity thank you for that all right thanks everybody any other questions from the board comments okay um so now we're going to go into public comment just in case anyone isn't aware we have two public comment sections during our meetings the first public comment portion is for what is on the agenda tonight we only have the budget on the agenda so if your public comments aren't about the budget vote then we ask that you make your comments during the second public comment portion so now this meeting will be open to the public referencing agenda items only however if your questions or comments pertain to litigation student or personnel items or negotiations we would ask that you see the superintendent after the meeting since we do not discuss these matters in public please limit your comments to three minutes per person it's also crucial please for you to give us your name and address before you speak up and to limit your comments to one time per public comment period mr donio will be in charge of the clock tonight is there anyone who wishes to speak on agenda items only all right seeing none moving to item six which is adoption of the 2022 2023 school budget i now need a motion to approve item 6.1 motion by mr fizzicaro do i have a second second by mr lanzilato any questions or comments mr fizzy cara just just one comment i i you know i know we generally do this but i in terms of what we've been going through the last several years i do want to thank the administration for how we've been handling this uh and and actually the entire district for hour we've been handling this i remember when this first started and then we're in year five correct out of seven i remember when this first started and the the shock of the sticker shock value of what was about to happen here and now we're almost through the tsunami part of this we're just about through that i just i want to commend for where we are right now what this district has done in terms of of staying with its high level and making all the adjustments it has to do it's a testament to everybody and not just from the highest all the way down for everyone what they had to do to make this happen so i'm extraordinarily as a board member and as a as a citizen of this community i'm extraordinarily grateful um that the impact as we do feel the impact my nightmares that i had five years ago were just not being realized and i'm very appreciative of all the work that's been done uh to protect everyone in this town particularly the children and and the staff members and and everything's happened so i do appreciate that any other questions or comments all right so i'll say a couple things um first of all i wanted to congratulate and thank the finance committee for their work it is not easy putting together a budget it takes time it takes hours every single week so to the finance committee and the board as well as a as a whole i wanted to say thank you for that um i also wanted to talk a bit about advocacy because advocacy is one of the the main topics when we talk about this budget presentation right so first and foremost i know dr smith already mentioned i wanted to thank chairman sarlo and a ranking member of scanlan from the new jersey senate budget and appropriations committee for hearing our testimony last month both sides of the aisle were very receptive to what we were saying so i think that's a good sign as far as as far as advocacy goes so another note as far as advocacy there when you guys are making public comments we see you guys with papers i say this every once in a while but if you guys are typing up public comments for us please email them to us as well when we talk to elected leaders we like to print them all out and just give them to them because we're supposed to complain about the budget right it's our job to be mad that we're not getting enough money but when the public really gets involved in a way that they haven't before we can see the type of change that we get um so if you guys have statements prepared please also email them to us in addition to speaking [Music] lastly i wanted to read a letter from our president mrs ryan who i'm sure we're all missing tonight because i gotta run this so for mrs ryan dear etsd community i'm writing to let everyone know that i am beyond proud of our finance committee and administrative team with the work they have all done on the upcoming budget this year it was not easy especially with the state funding cuts once again it took a lot of time effort and creative outside of the box thinking i would also like to thank the etea negotiations team and our own boe negotiations team for working diligently and more importantly swiftly to reach a collective bargaining agreement at an earlier than normal pace if i were president at tonight's meeting i would 100 be voting yes to approve the 2022 2023 budget proposal i just wanted to let the community know that i support all the work that was done in the preparation for tonight and for the children of yves shin township thank you leah ryan all right uh if there's no other questions or comments we can go to a roll call please mrs capalo yes mrs everhart yes mr frozocaro yes mr catherine yes mrs noel yes mr lancelata yes miss lee yes mr megan yes motion carries thank you mr shinty now we will head into open public comment this meeting will now be open to the public referencing any items of interest however if your questions or comments pertain to litigation student or personnel items or negotiations we ask that you see the superintendent after the meeting since we do not discuss these uh these matters in public please limit your comments to three minutes per person again it is crucial for you to give us your name and address before you speak up and also to limit your comments to one per person mr donia will again be in charge of the clock is there anyone who wishes to speak on any items of interest hello i'm danielle remus at 39 old republic lane and i'm here with kristin ross i'm going to be speaking on behalf of her she is a single mom with a disability she's unable to speak but would like the board to hear her perspective and we know she isn't the only one in her situation kristin lost her well-paying job during covid and is now earning minimum wage at a daycare center she is left with no extra money after paying her necessary bills she paid a 500 registration deposit to sign her daughter up for full day kindergarten this fall but she has no idea how she will pay the remaining tuition her daughter also has a disability half day kindergarten wasn't a choice for her because she has to work these are the options of half day kindergarten or full day kindergarten that our district presents to our parents unlike the only other comparable district in the county that charges her full day kindergarten eve sham does not have a reduced tuition program for qualifying families instead we charge 5500 across the board kristin does not receive child support and must work to provide for her family she can't rely on extended family her own parents are aging and ailing in kristin's words she she beats herself up because she can't afford the education for her daughter that other children are getting she is afraid she will need to remove her daughter from a school that will provide her with the education and services she needs and deserves and keep her in a lesser more affordable daycare setting we know it's the board of ed's job to evaluate statistics facts and finances but personal stories like these are important because they represent families that make up our district and we need to work harder for each and every family as the board works to implement equal access to full-day kindergarten for all we have to immediately address the inequalities that we've identified we requested tui transition for this upcoming year to allow for tuition relief for qualifying families thank you thank you is there anyone else who wishes to speak all right so at this point i will ask for a motion to adjourn the meeting do i have a motion motion by mr fizzagaro seconded by mrs noel all in favor aye meeting adjourned you

so that that's a great question what we would look at and what we're going to look at with the students is is do you notice a relationship between what we call vertex form of the equation in the actual vertex and you can see those values are given in the equation right there okay the negative 50 the negative notice that the parabola opens down sure i get it it affects that piece of it and the 50 is the a value which it's not going to give you a lot of meaning in terms of the context of this problem but what we focused in on in this what we call vertex form was that 23 representing the x-coordinate of the vertex and the 8450 which was the y-coordinate okay the students made that connection so the next piece was to come up with that break even point so what this represents again is the price and now we're comparing the price to our expenses so according to this graph we would have to charge ten dollars a meal in order to break even students again weren't necessarily using this graph and this technology in order to do this we had learned algebraically to solve by hand a system again a standard of a linear and a nonlinear function all right task three so here's what they have to do they're going to be given an equation which represents the flight of the t-shirt into the stands we need to be able to hit our customers which are 100 feet up on up in the level can we do that so they had to figure out algebraically that was possible or graphically we asked them to show us using two different methods again going back to the standards students need to be able to solve quadratics using the quadratic formula complete it's called completing the square factoring and also solve graphically so there's always so there's so much um so many different strategies and methods that they can bring to these problems and um that are included in all the standards so when they did that they got this graph right here so how long would somebody have or when might they be able to catch when might they be able to catch a t-shirt so it represents time in seconds and the height of the t-shirt what's the reaction time about three and a half seconds yeah right so at 1.28 they have a chance it's at 100 feet and then it's going to come back down at about 4.732 so the next task we pose to them is well if you can actually get it up higher you can double your profits because you're going to be able to sell to double the people so we ask them how are you going to adjust your equation to get it to be more than 200 feet if you're able to go in and click this link we have these little sliders here that you can move to figure out what you might need to change in order to get the ball to increase so students could experi experiment with that to see how what those factors change okay so we can obviously see if you think it's h or k the h value of the k value that's going to make the graph change it's going to be k right so as k gets bigger we can see that i can reach up into the second flight and then students were asked to put together a business plan they had to summarize their findings based on the amount of income we're going to gain per game our concession sales and our t-shirt sales and figure out when we were actually going to break even on that 1.5 million dollar investment so not only did we take time during this week believe it or not we actually still had some time left after we created all of this we went and created rubrics for each of the tasks we wanted to make sure that the language aligned with this rigor and depth of the standards as well to make sure that students were reaching where we wanted them to be so just to summarize thanks to the curriculum institute not only do we get these fantastic t-shirts which we wore to convocation we were all so proud to wear them we really feel that we're just preparing our students better for college and career readiness when the psats had come back in december after we had given this task in class i was so pleased because i had seen this math question on the psat so let's give you a minute to read it so you know the answer right so you just hit the accelerator based on what you saw in our performance test does the form of the equation at least look familiar to you right this is classified as a hard question and it has a cross-cutting concept with science in it but our students i would like the percent higher but still scored double than what the state average was on this particular question anybody want to take a guess as to what it was based on what we did so it's looking for that maximum again it's looking for the maximum at the x value the x value would be the 1905 it was just like that x coordinate of the vertex that we learned in vertex form so such a nice smooth connection even though it was in a different context because students were used to seeing these types of problems they not only saw these types of problems on the psat and on our performance tasks in class we are making sure that students are getting exposure to problems like this on a regular basis in class we want to make sure that they're ready and prepared for the depth and the rigor that these standards are calling for so this was an example we had used in class um pumpkin chunkin there's the festivals every year where they launch pumpkins so we took them through very similar type experience um where they had to look at the three types of equations and be able to use those two and apply to solve problems so just in general i would say taking away from this experience we went back we had about six uh regular teachers and a special ed teacher we've gone back we've shared these experiences and this is now how we're starting to operate when we're planning in our plcs every day we're planning collaboratively engaging in relevant tasks we're thinking deeper about our instruction about how to prepare kids to be ready to tackle tasks like this and we're building the appropriate scaffolding to ensure that every student has access to these types of tasks in class that's it nice thank you did anybody have any questions so there were how many teachers six participated i believe we had uh six math teachers and a special education teacher and that was for algebra two well we paired up for algebra one algebra two in geometry so in algebra one we have built a task around cell phone plans which they had recently used on solving systems of equations and then in geometry they had built two tasks around right triangle trigonometry i think it was related to building wheelchair ramps and staircases some type of real world application along that lines great thanks how many teachers are in the math department um i feel you're at 15.

anybody else move the balance second give me one second i think i had made a comment on too late uh 11 20 11 20. two 11.22 okay cool all right so we have three items pulled uh can i entertain a motion for the best balance we have a motion for the balance second i have a second all in favor all right any opposed motion passes unanimously now full 11.11 point y and 11.12 both together so i have a motion in a second all in favor aye aye aye any oppose abstentions uh i should pull back my eye and sustain eye okay uh motion passes four zero one okay in uh eleven point two two second motion uh we have a motion in a second uh and go ahead miss randall tryout okay sorry my chicken scratch over here i wanted to ask about extending the training to our safety officers and some key classified folks and to ask for board members to attend some trainings i'm assuming you're referring to the implicit bias in circles that och artis yes okay yeah as an invitation not that we need it but it's an invitation yes as an invitation that's an invitation okay all right anybody else seeing none i'll uh all in favor aye any opposed motion passes unanimously and now we go to uh superintendent and staff report i have a quick report first of all i just want to it's a it's a celebration i know amanda's in the i think she's behind the podium i can't see her she's hiding she's hiding but um as you know we're the first public school i think k-12 district enter into a partnership with google with the google certificates and we actually had our first student to complete uh one of the google certificates ashley from from cva and we believe uh she is probably one of the first if not the first student in the nation to complete an embedded google certificate because other districts aren't doing this work what's this it's in project management okay so and just so you know on monday the google team and i believe the head of google for this initiative lisa galver is going to be joining us to meet with our team to talk more about this work and how we continue to grow it and and support our students moving forward so just a celebration wouldn't you be aware of it's very very cool accomplishment something that we're really proud of and amanda's been leading that work with our teachers and our students so how many hours did it take for her to accomplish that uh it takes about 10 to 15 hours a week for about six months oh that long okay wow great and you mentioned she's a ninth grader ninth grader in cva wow okay okay ninth grader wow and when google comes on monday amanda i think that seven students that will be coming to speak with the google team um we have four coming from kennedy who are working on project management and three coming from three or four coming from savannah who are doing data analytics i mean we actually have a student from savannah who can't join us but we're trying to get a video testimonial because she has actually chosen to change her college major because of the work she did in data analytics and it's kind of changed her trajectory and so really very inspiring story that we want to try to capture is there any reason why it sounds like five students now have chosen project management is that like a base no so the way we implemented um our certificates this year is that we found teachers that were willing to try to embed it within their classroom instruction and so they chose the certificate they thought would pair best with their content and so so those particular teachers had had offered that certificate but we have certificates across the district in i.t support automation with python like coding data analytics and project management and so we're looking for ways to expand that and we have a few plans for next year to scale it but that's what it's based on teacher teacher connection at this point thank you that's why this meeting on monday is so important to get feedback from the teachers and the students in terms of what work but what we can do differently to to make it work for our kids just want to share that celebration awesome celebration congratulations to uh our student too i would love to be there one day let me know okay all right um no report no report mr cloud no report all right we'll go to our board of trustees report piercy me yes um this past month one of the first things i did was i did attend the memorial for jackie brock and it was very well attended and and then they had a gathering afterwards so that that was nice that it was handled like that um i attended the insurance committee meeting and then the soapbox speeches at luera that was really interesting very well done it's it's amazing what some of these kids do and then we made the awards and it was uh the only problem was it was a little cool night and i really felt bad for the club that was outside trying to sell bobas and and egg rolls so i had to go buy a dozen of them before on my homie home so so they'd have something you know just because i mean all these bobas were sitting out there and it was just and there was no intermission that was there was supposed to be an intermission and there wasn't so i felt bad for this vsa it was vsa vsa okay yeah and then i attended the teacher of the year at the disneyland hotel and that was really well done for covering two years they covered it for 2021 and 21 22.

however there are a few that will remain with me forever i will always recall the student who drew a perfect tree with a labyrinth of barren trunks and branches representing the nothingness in his life on the ground he drew a perfect pile of leaves representing his family who was hurting but there was one leave not on the ground it was gently falling still when i asked about the falling leaf he lifted his gaze and said to me i am the leaf i am falling and there is no one to catch me i am dying and no one cares we were able to surround the student with support he needed and he eventually graduated from high school thankfully his story is one with a happy ending because of your vision of supporting the whole child today and moving forward auhsd will be in a better position to meet the vital needs of countless students 12 years ago like so many mental health care providers within schools i realized that schools are primary care settings i was able to see our path we had to do the challenging and important work of ensuring mental health care is accessible and permanent in all schools to my amazing team this year we had constructive conversations about our purpose in schools some of them are here today um that they're in the back hiding i should point you guys out we talked about all the amazing things our district is offering our students we talked about the task that is in front of us our purpose is to collaborate with educators to create systems to recognize and support students that are hurting it is complicated and difficult work but there is nothing more the honor of being able to serve our community at magnolia high school i've been a part of auhsc for quite some time all the way from my beginnings of being a student at ball junior high so probably about 10 years ago i stood at this exact place to advocate for our district for public education with the onset of some of the challenges with devaluing our education for public education and the excuse me starting to get a little bit nervous here but with charter schools knocking on our doors and i think in those last 10 years i've been humbled and learned so much about what we do to really serve our students and i really put myself in their shoes because i remember what it's like walking those hallways i want to thank my wife she's unable to be here today she's taking care of my little so i'm looking forward to that and working with our families our students and our community i'm thankful i'm thankful for our men for my mentors who have taken me under their wing and modeled what true leadership is all about mentors like lorena moreno tayala carvalho who's watching and jose lara who've taught me that leading has to be intentional and you have to lead with integrity lastly i want to thank my friends and my family that are watching virtually and are always willing to have a listening ear whenever i need to vent my sons manny and ryan aguayo who are here today who love me almost every day and they definitely keep me on my toes and keep me accountable i also want to thank my mom patricia and my dad uh robert smith who are here today my grandmother maria villalobos and my sister mariah my i brought a lot of people um for being so amazing and for loving me so much and for always encouraging me encouraging me to take every challenge and persevere so much [Applause] all right last but not least uh lorena stout assistant principal on special assignment title nine coordinator [Applause] good evening everybody i would like to start by thanking our anaheim union high school district board of trustees superintendent matsuda and cabinet for the incredible honor of being selected as an assistant principal on special assignment as a title 9 coordinator i would like to also thank my husband who's here brad mike my daughter who's currently at the university of oregon go ducks and my son austin who's also here and all of my family who are watching from home and from thank i'm incredibly grateful for all the mentorship guidance encouragement and support i have received from district and everyone i have had the pleasure of working with including some incredible assistant principals some of you are here and principal mentors such as dr dabney liares chuck hernandez and my current principal dr roxanna hernandez they have contributed to my growth as a leader and continue to do so i joined the district in 2008 as a math teacher at anaheim high school and then went on to become an assistant principal in 2015. i have had the pleasure of being an assistant principal for seven years now i have met some amazing people that have come to have contributed to where i am today and forever grateful to them i look forward to continue to serve our students families community and the district in a different capacity again thank you to everyone for this great opportunity it is a true blessing to be a part of this district all right well congratulations to all some of you welcome you and some of you congratulations again for continuing your good work so thank you again for your service and we look forward to better and bigger things from all of you now next i'd like to go to 7.1 but what i'm going to do is take personal privilege here as president and move up 7.5 because he's also my boss and i know that he has a couple events to go to so i want to make sure that i uh push 7.5 so to honor uh supervisor and board chairman doug chafee and the supervisor for district 4 and his wife and also ambassador to our district paula chafee the board of trustees will recognize orange county uh district 4 supervisor doug chafee and his wife paula chafee for securing a grant funding in the amount of 155 856 for the performing arts booster clubs within orange county district four the programs receiving funding were anaheim high school colonist band and pageantry booster club and i'm high school performing arts conservatory boosters catella high school bannon color guard boosters catella vocal music association laura band booster club magnolia high school sentinel regiment booster club savannah band and pageantry booster club uh western high school pioneer regiment boosters and all of them received this uh because we had the opportunity to spend some money from the american rescue act plan at the border supervisor's office and when the opportunity came to support our schools he was there and he said that i want to uh pass this on to our schools who are heavily hit during the pandemic so i want to thank you uh supervisor chaffee on behalf of the district and all the parents and the students for giving us this opportunity and supporting our boosters so [Applause] well thank you for the honor inviting me here this evening what an incredible bunch of administrators you have here wow i want to go back to high school [Laughter] like to start though by thanking the district for making high school gymnasiums available to us during the pandemic to administer vaccinations thank you for a while i felt the gymnasium at magnolia high school was my home too and by partnering together we together saved a lot of lives so thank you for that you know it's very important that we preserve the performing arts the bands the orchestras and the dancing schools all those sorts of things in our schools it is a shame that during the pandemic the booster clubs could not raise the money to continue some of those efforts we saw that gap and that's why we pitched in and we had some available money not my money but anyway the arpa money was available i was so happy to be able to do that so i don't want to see the performing arts or any of the visual arts any of those things ever die in the schools we just have to fight to keep them there so thank all of you for what you're doing doing great work and so if i can help in any way please don't hesitate to call on me [Applause]

[Laughter] and then um tomorrow is school lunch hero day and we we will i know matt and rose will be out going around to schools i'll join in as i can get there um and then karen did mention it if it has a blood drive going on at sandia on may 14th from nine to three and we'll get that publicized as well out because um that just serves the community and anything we can do to to do that is wonderful 17 goals at skillsusa the same weekend as prom for granite hills high school and apple valley high school and they still outperformed um i saw one of our cte people from the county and over the weekend and they're like your kids are killing it and i said of course they are so lots of kids going to um atlanta this summer and we're just overwhelmed by the outcomes so thank you you don't want to tell about your uh trip to uh the white house and you're gonna meet the vice president and all that so i did go to um dc last week and um on advocacy so this was intent for california 123 california school superintendents and board members attended coast to coast with csba and axo which are both representatives of california over the course of the three days we spent time at the department of education as a 31-year educator i've only been on the outside of the department of education in washington dc but i made it inside this time and they actually asked let us ask questions and allowed us to talk about why funding for special education mental health nutrition services flexibility high speed internet access the american rescue plan timeline extension which for many people they don't understand educators were given to 2023 to spend the funds to support our students and every other entity that was provided those funds was given until december of 2026 we're just asking for equity to do that so that we can continue to support our students and our schools and then finally teacher prep programs and to to have our teachers prepared and ready to come so that we can fill those positions um i did get invited um 20 of us got invited to go to the white house um we thought it was a fishing expedition on the internet to get us to respond with our social security numbers and then we found out that it wasn't um this came on monday while i was there and um on tuesday morning we found out that the vice president had been positive for covid so we wouldn't get to meet with her we thought it was canceled got another email they had rescheduled with her staff so we all attended 20 of us got to go on to the white house grounds go into the eisenhower building and go into the white vice president's office with her staff and they took copious notes or certainly things they were focused on special education nutrition services high-speed internet because they know those are the things that have come out of this pandemic but it was a quite an experience and just being invited was one thing but actually having them listen to us and ask questions and hear our stories from our specific school districts were very powerful thank you [Applause] it was good thank you all right board member comments uh maria you're gonna let them go what's that you gonna let these students go home for homework oh they i'm not holding them hostage here [Laughter] they're they're here because they're interested all right you might believe that [Laughter] well you guys can go if you like i'm going to start by thanking the students the student speakers you were exceptional as usual you gave us all the information about your schools and what you were doing at your school i'm still shopping around for something maroon to wear on your graduation day so that i will really come to represent sun devils my life is about sun devils i have enough sun devil colors so i'll be there um i thank all the presenters mr uh schlosser you gave us enough information to get us going and and i really appreciate that uh to be able to serve the people of april valley when it comes up obviously um the the stadium we are not walking away we are going to do all we can to make sure that that does not go in the back burner that it comes to the front um we don't have guarantees because obviously i'm not the bank you know so i have to follow the protocol that they stated with regards to mariana school this is the first way i'm hearing about it but at least you have a superintendent who is willing to say let's go and sit down and talk about how we can better serve the children equity is very very important to to us sitting here so we want to be sure that your students who are going to make it to the high school will not be coming out from the back end and not be able to know what a lab is or gym is so the supreme you had you're very lucky you have a superintendent who is always willing to listen and and find solutions um congratulations to sigma rocks uh for your recognition and and i can't help but congratulate mrs mclean um for being recognized by axa that is a big thing because there's a lot of paperwork that goes for those awards and for them to recognize her was was a great honor unfortunately i did not go so when i saw it i felt like this is wrong um i should have known about it so that i will attend um skills usa um i'm really really proud of you and just in case some of you are not aware there's going to be a black graduation ceremony at um atlanta high school and there are quite a few students from apple valley who have reserved their place to attend the black graduation ceremony and i do i'm aware that the cost may be too high so on behalf of apple valley school district i took it upon myself to purchase all of their stalls uh so that the students who want to graduate out there to march down with their peers could also have their stole for that black graduation ceremony at atlanta high school otherwise i am really happy to be of service to each one of you thank you thank you maria christopher nunes thank you um quick congratulations to all of our skills competitors really appreciate it i know some of our cougars are watching hey guys just from granite hills regarding the stadium cougars on the case gotcha again congratulations to our skills students congratulations to all of our athletes who are rounding out their spring seasons in fantastic form thank you to all of our teachers for teachers appreciation week looking forward to seeing you all next week for staff appreciation week congratulations to all those who are receiving their longevity awards this week and next week um truly thank you for your many years of dedication and service and lastly we are on the final countdown so stay focused enjoy the last couple of weeks that we have left and make sure you cherish them and to our seniors congratulations we'll see you at graduation thank you chris dennis well graduation's coming at warp speed this is great we need the people to fill the jobs out there but uh no it really is good concerning the stadium i had kids who graduated from apple my last two graduated from granite i know we need a stadium we got the land west of the school it's going to happen there's no one wants it more than the people that are up here but thanks for your input it's very good yeah we're going to need your help and we're going to we're going to rally the troops they might circle the wagons thank you dennis uh i just want to follow up on uh what a couple of the board members said the teacher appreciation uh is is going on right now and uh we all i mean i can speak for myself we all remember our teachers and how what an instrumental part of our lives that they play i can go all the way back to kindergarten and remember some of my teachers and so uh we had a really rough two years teachers have the schools have and a lot of teachers came through with flying colors and stuck with it and we appreciate the teachers for that and we're looking forward to um negotiations for the teachers this year and um doing doing good things for the district so we appreciate it as far as the stadium goes what i'd like to do uh there's been a we did have a presentation from our superintendent staff about this a couple months ago and then we do have an issue with the bonds on the ballot and possibly but i would like to keep keep this in the keep the iron in the fire and have a presentation done on financing and what it's going to take in what the costs would be for design and move it forward so if we can have that done uh in the next upcoming meetings throughout this uh the rest of this rest of this year of 2022 and come up with uh come up with some answers um that'd be great now see matt's taking notes um but uh it is important to the community and uh you know we haven't taken the steps to purchase the land and so let's keep it moving forward it's the only high school in the high desert it doesn't have a statement we know that yeah with that i will move on to uh public hearings regarding adoption of resolution number 2122-17 of the governing board of alpha valley unified school district to authorize approving a fee justification study and increasing the level yes thank you in increasing the level statutory school facility fees imposed on residential and commercial industrial construction pursuant to ed code section 17 620 and government code section 65995 so matt to provide some comment prior to opening the time for the comments so uh thank you mr rowley just a little background in a little statement about what this is um if we think back to october 2017 the board did approve an agreement with cooperative strategies to perform this biennial residential and commercial development school fee justification study this particular study is the third in that cycle thus ending our agreement with cooperative strategies but they did prepare this fee study as required by government code pertaining to the adoption of school fees and the study was in fact available for public review in the business office for more than 10 days prior to tonight's meeting as is required by law the level 1 developer fees were actually established in 1998 and are updated by the state allocation board early in each even year hence 2022.

there are a few upcoming plans and events that student council association is planning that i'd just like to talk about the first is our project graduation snap raise snap raise is a fundraising platform that a bunch of organizations high school have been using more and more regularly and now we're using it it's a very simple fundraiser uh that we put together for their senior class advisors mrs carafan and mr vidello to raise money for project graduation i may be wrong about this but i believe that links for this website to donate money are available on almost all of the local facebook groups for clifton and clifton residents unfortunately they don't have a search option to just search clifton high school and get to it but if you can get to those links we would greatly appreciate any donations to help make project graduation feasible next is something that the sophomore class officers are planning and they're trying to get chs involved with the pulsara project which is a non-profit group that buys hand woven posers from central american artists to raise money to assist central american communities in a multitude of ways including but not limited to scholarships secondary education funding and funding for environmental initiatives it's a great program we've never really gotten involved with before so we're very excited to now be getting involved with it uh lastly we're approaching the school year especially for seniors like myself we have a ton of ideas that we're working on to try to make the industry as great as possible but one of the things essay is doing to really plan for the year ahead is revising the sca constitution and membership criteria for some positions which may in turn affect the student representative next year if anything changes regarding criteria or the responsibilities of the student representative i will be sure to report them the following meeting two more just miscellaneous things i just like to throw in uh national decision day for seniors was just behind us so i want to take the opportunity to just congratulate all clifton seniors to finalize their higher education plans for next year it fills me with great pride to see so many of my friends and peers just go to amazing places in the fall and lastly i recognize the budget for the upcoming school years being finalized tonight i will not be making exact statements on specific items instead i just implore you to make sure that all decisions are in the best interest of students here in clifton thank you and goody good night [Applause] yes andrew where did you decide to go to school if you don't mind sharing yeah excellent [Applause] uh andrew i again thank you i know we missed you for a few meetings but we're glad that you're back and i know your action where it says view minutes oh it's right there yeah i did the same thing i'm gonna have to have stain i didn't read them okay roll call please mr abba drabo yes we're sending on executive mr awad yes miss bashford i'm going to abstain on regular and yes on executive miss beltran yes mr canova yes mr paris yes vice president daley yes president smith yes motion carries um superintendent's report dr robitozi thank you mr smith good evening commissioners members of the community faculty and staff in attendance good to see you my report will be very brief tonight because we have two uh formal presentations on the new health standards and of course the budget proposal i just want to say happy teacher appreciation week to the people who work so hard in our district to um they're just the backbone of our district they do everything they can to help our kids um our kids love them they love our kids and our teachers we just have some of the most fantastic teachers that i've ever seen i just want to read a little bit from the the message that i sent my teachers of appreciation this week and i used a quote from robert frost that he once said i am not a teacher but an awakener and as i reflected on the past school year i was continually amazed by our unbelievably talented staff they faced considerable challenges including welcoming back students who for more than half of them almost 60 percent of our students had not been in the classroom full-time in almost two years and of course they handled every obstacle we threw at them with grace and ease supporting your students as they reacclimated to full-time school learning environment while helping them emotionally and academically took patience dedication and understanding which are truly the hallmarks of a great educator at a time when public education is once again under scrutiny i'm hard pressed to find any other profession that requires the innovation flexibility and determination as public school teachers and as aristotle once said teaching is the most noble profession i am a teacher in my heart i applaud you and i appreciate you this week and every week and i know we don't say it enough but you are all very very much appreciated our teachers [Applause] next week wednesday may 11th is nurse appreciation week and i'm going to send them a nice letter too our nurses i mean geez i could go on and on about our nurses but you know dealing with what we've had to deal with running schools during a global pandemic contact tracing doing things that we were never expected to do thank you to our nurses who have gone above and beyond who have been more than nurses who have been mothers who have been counselors who have been first aid who have done just a little bit of everything thank you to our nurses and i will thank you more formally um in a letter so mr smith that concludes my report tonight because uh we do have two presentations so i'm short and sweet thank you dr robitozzi um i just asked that um again i don't want to go through every single one of them but they're very important um events coming up for the students so if you go to our website and you go to the peach jar flyers you'll see events that are coming up from uh tricky trays to beefstakes to uh the opus uh uh the marching band is holding a car wash for the next three saturdays um sports camps that are happening over the summer uh the band's big beefsteak uh on june 10th so there's a lot of great things happening for clifton students so i ask that you please go on to our website and view the the flyers on peach jar to get all the information about the activities happening for our students and we ask that you all in the best that you could go out and support clifton students we will move on from that uh so next we have first reading of policy uh 0 167 public participation in board meetings so next we have the presentations of reports from administration advisory committees and special uh committees doctor thank you mr smith uh first presentation tonight uh will be mrs kusalevich our assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction along with uh mr colturi our supervisor of physical education and health for our district um they'll be doing a presentation on the comprehensive health and physical education standards overview as they're getting prepared for this presentation i'm going to make just a couple general statements that i really hope people take to heart there has been a lot of discussion a lot of misinformation a lot of talk about the new health standards that are going to be implemented in the public schools next school year and i want every parent and every member of our community and every commissioner here to know that i believe in this district believes that a parent has the right to help direct the educational upbringing of their children absolutely has that right all i ask is that before you make any decisions you make sure that you're making an informed decision based on facts based on information from reliable sources and based on the correct information if after tonight's presentation and if after our couple of parent and community presentations that we have at the end of may if you say to me or to our teachers i'm still not comfortable with my children learning this standard or the way you're going to teach the curriculum to the standard then we will respect that without question i just ask that you listen commissioners if you have questions after the presentation of course please feel free to ask questions and of course the public is welcome to comment during open public at this time miss kusalevich and miss turi thank you good evening commissioners and administration it's a pleasure to be back here again with you today um ms turi and i are going to be presenting some more details about the comprehensive health and physical education standards as they've been updated for 2020 samantha it's not moving it moved earlier okay while we work on our technical difficulties i'll just get started so this evening we're going to be covering um the new jersey student learning standards updated for 2020 for comprehensive health and physical education then we're going to be looking at some of the new jersey legislative mandates that have impacted instruction the changes to the comprehensive health and physical education standards are how they differ from 2014 as well as local decision making and curriculum development and finally we're going to talk about parental options and information sessions that are coming up but before we begin i would really like to address some of these misconceptions that dr robert tosi was mentioning there have been a number of misconceptions that have been shared on social media that have been in the news and that have also been presented here at our own board meeting we have had concerned parents rightly concerned sharing lessons that we actually as a curricular team struggled to identify where they came from because they were things that we had never seen they were not on the state website they were not linked to anything that we were working with with the core content standards now the lessons that were presented came from a different organization out of washington dc the lessons that were shared came from a company called advocates for youth which is also known as rights respect and responsibility or the three r's and were related to videos from amaze.org but i would like to begin by saying that clifton will not be using the lessons from advocacy for youth or the videos that were discussed from amaze.org a school district has to implement the standards but the doe does not force us to use or mandate that we use specific curriculum they don't mandate that we use specific materials we will not be using the materials that were shared previously because they are not in our opinion developmentally appropriate for our students all clifton lessons will be developed by our professionals they will be locally developed and age and grade developmentally appropriate for our students it's our clifton teachers who are going to be working on this right now our teachers will be receiving training from now through the summer on these new standards and they're working on collecting materials and developing these lessons you're going to see some of the examples that are developmentally and age-appropriate that we will be sharing we're actually going to share with you a few youtube videos to see how the district is interpreting our local interpretation and application of these standards to our curriculum and the lessons that will be developed by our professionals remember our teachers are professionals many of them are parents many of them are also clifton parents so we want everyone to understand that our primary goal is the mental and physical health and safety of our students disease prevention fostering respect for ourselves and others and understanding and acceptance of those other than ourselves now we were talking about some legislative statutes so the standards right now appear to be very different from the previous standard but not when you look at legislation the state over many years passes legislative agendas which then trickle down into the school district so there are many pieces of law that wind up being taught in the classroom and eventually catch up into the standards and that's basically what's happening here in 2020 so prior to 2014 these statutes were already being taught in the classroom mostly in our health and physical education curriculum but also some of these being cross content so i'm going to go over some of those prior to 2014 we've been teaching primarily abstinence accident and fire prevention breast self-examination bullying prevention cpr and aed instruction cancer awareness dating violence education domestic violence education drugs alcohol tobacco controlled substances and anabolic steroid use prevention gang violence prevention lyme disease prevention organ donation sexual assault prevention suicide prevention since 2019 legislation on consent mental health the new jersey south haven infant protection act sexting sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention education have all been taught in our classrooms in our comprehensive health and physical education classes so some of the topics that are brought that were brought up at the past meetings are just a tiny sliver of the many many many topics that we teach in our health and phys ed classes some other legislation impacts all curricular areas like holocaust education the amistad law the contributions of lgbtq and individuals with disabilities law these are all laws that then apply in the classroom but not as a subject rather as a theme so one example would be the contributions of lgbt and individuals with disabilities when you're in a science class you want to talk about people who are famous scientists so when you get to physics and you're talking about physics you might mention stephen hawking as a person within with disabilities who is also a prominent physicist related to the topic you're teaching that legit that piece of legislation is as simple as that so these influences have been here for many many years and we're just seeing the standards catch up to what we've already been teaching in our classrooms now we're going to start looking specifically at the updates the new pieces or changes in the 2020 comprehensive health and phys ed standards and the first thing we're looking at is grades k through 2 which is what was referenced at a previous board meeting nicole thank you janina good evening commissioners i didn't think i needed one with a phys ed voice but that's okay it's for the tv good evening commissioners and central administration administration in the first standard that you see here we're discussing how individuals make their own choices about how to express themselves we have chosen a developmentally appropriate video to demonstrate one of the examples our clifton developed in a lesson small business owners know they've got to be prepared for anything [Music] hi friends today we'll be reading it's okay to be different we are all different do you know each and every person is different it's true if everyone looked and acted the same how would we know who was who some kids love to swim and some like to hike some like to dance and some love to bike we are all different some kids love the color blue and some adore yellow maybe pink is your favorite color like this little fellow some kids love to build towers out of blocks some kids enjoy wearing different colored socks we are all different some kids have blonde hair and light colored skin some kids have dark hair and dark colored skin some kids are big and some kids are small some kids are short and others are tall we are all different some kids are great at science and math other kids choose a whole nother path perhaps playing sports or music is their thing some kids play an instrument while others can sing we are all different some kids wear glasses that help them to see some kids talk with an accent that's different from me some kids get to ride in cool looking chairs they take the ramp while others take the stairs we are all different some kids have glasses crutches wheelchairs and slings but it's never okay to make fun of these things even though we don't all look act or sound alike one thing is true every child is an individual a person like you you should always be kind to those who are different from you because to them you are different too remember it's okay to be different it's okay to be you you were made to be different you were me to be you [Music] the second standard is to discuss the range of ways people express their gender and how gender role stereotypes may limit behavior as a mother of four children two boys and two girls i have taught my children that they can be whatever they want to be this is the approach we are taking by keeping in mind the developmentally appropriate lesson for grade two the following video is another to demonstrate the clifton developed lesson all aboard for global goals hello it's me thomas i've been on a big world adventure i learned what an amazing place the world is and how important it is that we take care of it today i want to talk about how girls and boys should be given the same chance some people think that girls can't do the same jobs as boys and treat girls as if they are weak but i've seen that this isn't true i've been on a world adventure and seen all sorts of engines and people doing different types of work gordon is one of the biggest and strongest engines on sodor but he's not the only one that can pull the express rebecca's just as big and strong as he is and their great friends mavis works at the quarry pulling cars of heavy stone paxton is really good at that too on sodor bell and flynn work well together putting out fires and i used to think i was the only number one blue tank engine until i met hong may if girls and boys aren't given the same opportunities then they may not get the chance to do something they're good at that's not fair but when boys and girls work as equals they could be the best they could be and do amazing things see you next time the next standard we're addressing healthy ways for friends to express feelings for and to one another this is simply a hug a high five a fist bump a thumbs up that's as limited as it will be the next standard is to demonstrate healthy ways to respond to disagreements or conflicts with others for example leave the conflict talk to a trusted adult tell a sibling or a peer the next standard is listing medically accurate names for body parts including the genitals we are limiting this to penis testes vagina and vulva defining reproduction by second grade it's as simple as creating a living organism plants animals and humans all reproduce this lesson would likely transition to how a parent would care for their offspring for example hunting gathering nourishing clothing providing shelter etc [Applause] and now we move to grade five the social and sexual health standards for grade five do include a change in the previous 2014 standards students learned a lesson about factors that contribute to a healthy relationship within a family that's now been moved from sixth grade down to fifth and the focus is on interpersonal communication nicole in fifth grade we're also bringing back describing gender role stereotypes and their potential impact to self and others once again a video that was developed by clifton selected by clifton selected by clifton excuse me to help writing's not that easy but grammarly can help this sentence isn't it afternoon we're going to draw people doing different jobs and the first job we're going to draw is a firefighter have a thing in your head what a fireplace what's your firefighter called mine's called firefighter gary firefighter my advice he's big and strong he's got a big helmet on that's brilliant isn't it next we're gonna draw a surgeon have you thought of a name for your surgeon he gave you medicine that's his ambulance okay next we're going to draw a fighter pilot yes this is his jet plane he rescues people he likes to do stunts in the air and stuff okay now who would like to meet these people for real [Music] dressed up my name's tamzin and i'm a surgeon in the nhs my name's lauren and i'm a pilot in the royal air force my name's lucy i'm a firefighter in the london fire brigade so who wants to know how to do an operation we put this in here can you hear that yeah it's really good yeah [Music] the next standard is differentiating between sexual orientation and gender identity clifton plans to limit this lesson to definitions only for example for grade five gender identity is how you feel sexual orientation is who you love since terms evolve over time and contexts these definitions will be updated accordingly to pending njdoe review of these standards and now we're moving into the personal growth and development standard all of the standards that are listed on this page are taught in just one or maybe two lessons out of the 20 health lessons that students have already been participating in grade 5.

the increase is mainly due to the cash received from the federal grants reimbursements and prop 301 classroom site funds in summary based on a review of the financial data there are no immediate material concerns based on what is shown for the remainder of the fiscal year if there are no questions this concludes my report on the agency's informational and physical business services thank you thank you are there any questions all right seeing none thank you next up 7.01 information item introduction and possible discussion policies gcch and gcd uh marie murphy good afternoon board president nigro members of the board superintendent reichman assistant superintendents rex and cooper you have before you the proposed redline revisions of the two policies um excuse me something in my fruit here of gcch and um gcd the policies were posted on the website for public comment no public comment was received the poli the changes as you will see are fairly minor in terms of the bereavement policy it's making some minor changes regarding ensuring that there is some kind of proof that is provided of the bereavement and for out of state it's requiring superintendent approval and for gcd excuse me i have this open and it went away on me i'm so sorry it went away i beg your pardon for um gcd the the change is that the superintendent would be required to approve any non-exempt employee working on a holiday so those are the extent of the changes i'm sorry for the delay here technology at this time i would like to make myself available for any questions if you have any are there any questions for miss murphy no um thank you ms murphy thank you next the 7.02 discussion of possible action on budsperson position next step superintendent right yes this is superintendent regman on the agenda is the topic of an ombudsperson we have added the pdq or the job description for an ombudsperson that we developed three years ago for that position the question for the board is what do you want to do last time the board set up a subcommittee or an ad hoc subcommittee to accept applicants conduct interviews and select a candidate that you wanted to become an ombuds person if you would like to do that again you can choose to establish that subcommittee i do have some thoughts but i wanted to bring that to you first to see how you would like to proceed can you tell us your thoughts first this is superintendent regman one thought regarding the ombuds person is having that person reporting to me as superintendent rather than reporting to the board that way i can go ahead and set up the search conduct interviews select a candidate and then set the expectation regarding reporting to me and reporting to the board that way i can create some accountability for that position and make sure that the data and information provided to the board on a is provided to the board on a regular basis with our previous ombudsperson she provided a report to the board i think one time we were working with her to try to figure out how to document um each of the situations that she handled and how to put that data into a spreadsheet and summarize it in a way that she could report to the board regularly and that did not happen so i think if the board does want an ombudsperson we need to establish accountability for that position the way to establish accountability is that that person would be directly under me so that i can make sure that that person is doing their work and is also reporting regularly to the board and to me as well thank you linda has her hand up uh linda this is linda i have a question for superintendent regman over the last couple of years from your perspective what do you need is there one specific need that you have do you need someone on a permanent basis or an as needed basis or what do you have in mind for that position if you want that person to report directly to you that's fine so my question is what do you need based on what you've experienced in the past this is superintendent reichman based on what's happened in the past um there it was an as a needed situation as needed position the staff students or community members could contact the ombuds person and to ask for information and the ombuds person would respond to those individuals provide the requested information regarding what they can do in their situation their options and then follow up to see if the issue that person brought forward was resolved it was on an as needed basis and previously the on buds person i think she did an average of maybe five hours a week there really wasn't a lot of work it was it was less than part time it really depended on what was happening in that moment with our staff students parents and the community one thing is that people often misunderstood the role of an ombudsperson sometimes people thought if they went to the ombuds person and let them know that they had a specific issue then the ombuds person would go to the board and tell the board and then the board would resolve the issue for that person which is not the role or responsibility of an ombudsperson the ombuds person's responsibility is to provide information and options and and explain that process explain the policy that we have explain both the complaint and the grievance policies provide some feedback on how to have those crucial conversations with supervisors how to go up the appropriate chain of command when necessary how to work with hr whether they're an employee or if it's a staff excuse me a parent or a student what procedures they can take and essentially how to follow policies and procedures the ombudsperson is not an advocate they are not there to advocate on behalf of staff or the parent in question they're just there to provide information so i when i hear from the community that they want an ombudsperson there is a lot of misunderstanding about what that role is to be and what that person's responsibilities are what that person is supposed to be doing for you as the board looking at that ombudsperson it's for you to have some accountability and some assurance that complaints are being addressed and discussed that ombudsperson can provide a summary um and data stating that for example i have received x number of reports regarding this issue um x number regarding this issue these were the resolutions or there was no resolution so that we have a better pulse on what's going on within the agency so it's also an opportunity for the board to feel more comfortable responding to complaints from staff from the community etc so you have more information to work with okay thank you are there other questions for superintendent reichman or other comments it's okay this is uk i i think part of that role also needs to be not only hearing the complaints and coming in and and helping educate people providing those concerns to the ombudsmen about the the process but i i also think their needs to be some oversight to make sure that there aren't gate keepers along the way that are not allowing the process to actually be actualized and and that's some of what we have heard in some of the complaints previously um is that people feel like they can't go to the person they have the concern about because it doesn't go beyond that so whether that's happening or not i think the point of the having the ombudsman position would be to monitor that process and and make sure that it was effectively being utilized and actualized thank you sue um you know i think at this point what we might consider doing is you know forming an advisory committee to locate or or supervise the location and uh hiring of the inbuts person and when i say supervise the hiring the advisory committees are advisory only uh so there any decision or report that they make is not binding on the on the board uh you know we have to we'd have to all agree that the board would have to agree by majority vote sure the advisory committees are advisory only and their decisions are not binding on the board the board would need to vote on a potential candidate but the advisory committee can confer with the superintendent and locate candidates and interview those candidates and provide a report of those interviews this is pv chance i'm not sure that's a wise use of our time and the leadership team's skills and capabilities i would like to see the leadership team propose maybe their top two or three candidates and then perhaps the board can select from that that top two or three based on their recommendations uh this is david um you know for this position because the imposed person works so closely with the board i mean to me it makes sense to have a couple of board members uh take a look at this more closely uh that's i mean that's my thought maybe the whole board doesn't agree uh in the in the last round when we did this there were two candidates and board members including myself interviewed them and then we that was brought to the whole board for vote um i i will say it is uh 5 30 so we've been an hour and a half so we should take our 10 minute break right now and then we can resume with this topic all right thank you sorry we are ready to return it is 5 40.

okay so 14 16. sorry so you said with that one particular question our students scored twice yes as high how do was there a similar question with last year's psats and how did our kids do relative to so great question to ask this is the first time that i've actually i see the the test is starting to shift more to align with the common core um so i was excited to finally see a question that looked like this but there were probably three to four problems that i could say that kids could definitely do based on what they had learned in this experience related to quadratic functions yeah and so these are all um functions that they have to master to be successful long-term across all courses right so students will start with linear so we built um a linear task in algebra one um we started we had a little time left during that week so we started to build a performance task around polynomial functions as well which is our follow-up unit to quadratics in algebra two and we'd like to continue to build those uh in the future in the summer possible to continue to strengthen the assessment system no question i just want to say i really appreciate the fact that it's the real world examples and tie directly to the business side of thanks to profit and loss and so as i said it carries through to that side of the curriculum and i only wish when i was doing algebra many years ago that i had this kind of examples to work from it just moved a lot more into it for me so that's awesome thank you and it's actually a nice transition because michael kelly is going to come up and show you uh how his students had created a business plan as part of his research thanks lisa darlene real quick um so um lauren said that you know 17 to 20 participated last year they hope to have more what incentives do you give or how are teachers encouraged to participate so we had 80 teachers overall 17 from the high school and a lot of them have reached out to us to see if they could participate this year i think what we did at convocation was to showcase the fabulous mike solomini video of the institute we had those t-shirts made so that people would talk to folks who had been and were really relying on um you know teachers talking to teachers in their departments saying how what their experience was and we reach out through through all the principles through our rams through our coaches etc to determine what we want to write this summer and then based on what the needs are what the priorities for what needs to be written then that's how we get teachers to um volunteer to be there but it's all voluntary and it's you just said that right because outside the contracted school year okay they do get paid but they volunteer and you know as i said at the middle school showcase last year was incredibly challenging for our teaching staff a lot of adjustments and at least was talking about you know that was a long year nevertheless we had that many people just select to be there for this and we knew that it was a long year and we better make it engaging the same way we would want to model that you know that our we would want our teachers to do that for our students and marlene and team really did a tremendous job doing that that's why we have even more people that want to come this year it's great it's exciting all right my name is michael kelly i'm a business teacher here at cheshire high school i had an opportunity to participate in the curriculum writing last summer and i could genuinely say that uh it was the most meaningful professional development opportunity that i've had in 20 years uh it was fantastic and i'm going to explain there were there were three real it was a combination of three things it was instruction resources and time um in terms of instruction we had a curriculum expert um in linda ben wagonen uh was there to to show us how to properly write curriculum and she used the uh backwards by design model which i'm i'm going to explain uh along with linda uh teaching us we had the opportunity to brainstorm bounce ideas offer we got feedback um live feedback she was there all day um including the administration was there all day so we had the resources there and and i i felt very supported um on writing something that i was a little uneasy about um we also got an opportunity to share the curriculum and uh with linda in my case it was one unit of an introduction of business uh course that was new it's a it's articulated it's a dual enrollment course where students get three credits at tonses community college and it was it was kind of ironic i shared it with her in one evening and she was online and we had actual live dialogue together and i was i i just i don't i thought it was neat i felt kind of like important um we had all the resources there uh i won't go through each one but we had a square template the master curriculum we had it was a one-stop shop we had everything right in front of us um so curriculus curriculum is not something you just you put down and bring up again you need time and i'm going to get to that but this was very important because we had everything there for us we had the resources the instruction the support we had time to collaborate with colleagues wide it was nice to see a lot of the other teachers uh with questions district-wide we all kind of bounced ideas off each other we had long blocks of time to write curriculum time to create real real world authentic assessments and when you when you create these assessments you have to measure the assessment um you can't just give it a a performance assessment and not measure it so i'm going to explain about backwards by design but we had we had that opportunity to create the the real world authentic assessment and then be able to create rubrics uh to measure those uh assessments and then the assessment has to meet the learning target and you're able to create those those rubrics to assess that um the backwards by design model uh the first step is to identify how the power stands the learning targets and you're kind of putting the cart before the horse so to speak the next step is to create this this authentic hopefully assessment on how you're going to measure whether these students master and the level in which they master these these learning targets and power standards and and to be honest with you this takes time it's it's not something that you just pick up and put down it's it's a it's a long process and we had a great opportunity with great resources great instruction um and then you just kind of scaffold backwards and after you create this performance assessment you then create your your your scaffold backwards and create your your lessons your learning tasks your activities your your assignments your quizzes your projects so i'm not going to go into my professional goal um we had um i was able to tweak around a real world and in my opinion this is a real world authentic assessment which is a business plan uh where students create a comprehensive business plan i'm just gonna this young lady did clara's dance shop and i think she did a wonderful job is the student project this is a student project i practiced before so yeah so i'm gonna start this young lady created a business plan for clara's dance shop claire claire's dance shop is a store that sells all types of dance apparel and necessities she created a mission statement she created a vision statement a management team she gathered her employees her advisors um this is a summary of clara's van shot startup costs her equipment that that it entailed her supplies the inventory that she would need the total startup cost a balance sheet with assets liabilities owner's equity which should even out um the competition uh that she had and her competitive advantage um she had a target market her demographics or psychographics or geographics uh her marketing and advertising plan uh she did a little business card and for the philanthropy plan i practiced this philanthropy plan uh intellectual property that this would include and just kind of a summary of her little project this comprehensive business plan and her resources [Music] sorry yeah um and just i the the impact on students uh i just think real world especially in one of our district-wide initiatives is critical thinking and social emotional learning um and i think just projects like this allow students to uh to express themselves to uh have an opportunity to showcase uh their knowledge and themselves um in a real world like an authentic way so um i found this curriculum writing workshop um extremely valuable i i thought it was fantastic but i i thank you guys for the opportunity um from me to participate in that so thank you um i'm next going to bring up terry morneau from the business department she's going to talk a little bit about uh her experience with the curriculum writing institute thank you i'm just curious what course do you teach for that where that feeds into it i know the business department but i'm just curious that was an introduction to business course okay okay it was a it was a new course i had i previously taught a business ownership we had an opportunity to um articulate with a with tungsten community college in a concurrent course where the the students receive three credits um and and so i actually started this institute with with nothing there was no curriculum it was never taught at cheshire high school so um so that's where the the the this business model of this business plan sure so was that one project the entire semesters no that was a that was a unit on entrepreneurship which was which was how long how many weeks uh i would say it was this new uh our new i would say it was about uh the entrepreneurship was about a three three week uh in terms of this in terms of activities lessons and that so that product was was after at the end of the three weeks correct three three three and a half weeks i would say that's impressive thank you thank you thank you mike welcome i'm going to start off with going into how i professionally benefited by attending the curriculum writing institute for the first time offered this past fall it's a brand new course internship experience it's offered for juniors and seniors it's a half year credit and they also have the opportunity to tie in with this course a credit for mastery-based performance assessment which is going to be a graduation requirement for the graduating class of 2023 there's seven different ways that students can earn that credit and taking an internship course is one of the ways i wholeheartedly agree with everything lisa and michael said about the advantages of attending the curriculum writing institute from my vantage point i can't stress you've heard the word time time but it was time that was continuous five days straight where we were in an environment that had the resources the expertise the colleagues where we could bounce ideas off of each other see if we're going in the right direction so we weren't spinning our wheels and it was so valuable um as opposed to me just being in my classroom by myself or at my home where i would spend one hour here two hours there and then spending time getting acclimated okay where did i leave off what do i still have to do am i going in the right direction um i can honestly say that i this is my 41st year of teaching and in the four decades i've had my chance of my opportunities of writing curriculum and this past summer i benefited so much because i felt that my time was efficient and productive as opposed to just accomplishing this on my own how did my students benefit i had to keep in mind the end goal and that is to place them in an internship experience in the cheshire community and have them be successful so different things that had to be designed from square one these are young children 16 17 years old and they for the most part don't really know what they want to go into for a career some do but most of the time they don't and i we designed a career uh interest survey no exaggeration i had one student when i asked her well what are your top three choices that you i can help you get a placement in cheshire and she said hospitality airline business physical therapy okay we need to narrow this down and find your passion so there was a career interest survey then develop a resume they don't have a lot to put into a resume at this point in their high school career but the resume is a working document it's not a one and done they are going to be going back to that resume for their entire working career and i know they have naviance where they have a listing of their uh extracurricular activities community service their work experience but it's not really professional looking it could go on to four pages long so we developed a template for a resume that would be beneficial for a high school student to start using and then with the goal in mind that they will go back to it after they graduate and use it for their entire working career building communication skills both via telephone and email i know the students send emails back and forth to their teachers on a daily basis i get them from students every day i'm not going to say that a lot of them are formatted accurately i see a lot of emails with no capitalization no punctuation spelling mistakes no reading so i spent some time helping them learn how an effective email should be designed uh picking up the phone they can live on their phone and text constantly and do social media but if i say pick up the phone and call prospective mentor they need to develop those skills practicing uh mock interview we've developed questions commonly asked questions the um what are your strengths what are your weaknesses and we practice those but also questions where they have to think off the top of their head that may be a question that they wouldn't be prepared to answer today leslie pierre and i had the opportunity to bring seven students to visit the uh office of the president of the chamber of commerce uh mr um yeah phil knew phil you went to his uh allstate insurance office it was an awesome experience and he said one of his questions that he likes to ask prospective employees is if you could have any superhero power what would it be and why and that makes the students think it's something that they may not have been prepared about for to answer but um they can be successful in formulating an answer i also had a colleague come in and run through the mock interview process from start to finish entering the room shaking the hands having eye contact answering inc and complete sentences and then thanking them and all my students said that they appreciated the fact to run through that mock interview because they felt less stress and anxiety when they actually had to have an interview with their mentor in the workplace develop great work habits show up on time be early put your phone away dressed up dress appropriately i know the fashion out there is to wear ripped jeans and show your midriff but in the working place that's not really appropriate if you're going to be late pick up the phone and call them if you're going to have something you can't make it into your mentorship uh that particular day call them i know in the real world late compounds if somebody has three no call no show they lose their job so those are all different things that we concentrated on and others to prepare them for the placement in their internship there is an awesome uh web online resource offered through the cheshire public schools upon clever and it's called the virtual job shadow and on that virtual job shadow there's all different career clusters and no matter what they have an interest in they can go to this site and call it up there's videos from actual professionals in that career talking about the job description the duties uh questions and answers from those people is there required further education licensing training certification what's the possible earnings for that occupation future outlook if they are interested in that career where could they attend college and here is just a listing of all the different career clusters housed on that virtual job shadow and underneath each of these clusters there's sub clusters so if you have a student had an interest in finance they would go into that on the website and then there would be different jobs that dealt in that finance field that they could go into in more depth so all of this would prepare the students to for the end goal be successful in an internship placement and i am now going to hand the clicker over to leslie i'm going to talk about how learning extends beyond the classroom environment all right so um i think that we're really sharing with you how powerful the curriculum writing institute was um the time and the resources our teachers benefited so much but even better than our teachers benefiting as much as they did our students really benefit from all all of the planning that they were able to do and the approach they use the backwards by design and you know just the curriculum is is is great but we want to share with you at the high school level all of the other experiences that our students are able to take advantage of based on the curriculum that they've learned these are some other opportunities where they can really explore and expand their areas of interest so for career experiences terry just talked about the internship program we have a cadet teaching class uh we have the career development class where we're starting to get back into letting students get involved in job shadows and then terry also mentioned the mastery-based performance assessment uh all of the students are that are engaged in one of these uh projects they're supposed to have a mentor they're um that allows them to make another adult and professional connection uh when they're involved in whatever the research is in their learning for the mastery-based performance assessment uh our curriculum and we're extending that to the college level micro curriculum this summer for the dual enrollment class the introduction to business class um these are just the class the um classes in the business department where you can earn college credit but throughout each of our disciplines in cheshire high school there are opportunities where that where the curriculum is taken to the next level i can't not mention how how valuable it is when we have guest speakers coming into the high school huge coup um just last week we had rob nooner who is the ceo of boost oxygen look it up boost oxygen was featured on shark tank and it was really wonderful to have him in person he was in the auditorium we had over a hundred students and not just business students we had other students that were interested and they joined us and he really spoke about the path that he took starting in high school where he went to college what that experience was like and what led him to become the entrepreneur that he is today and it was just um really great to hear that and then all of the he brought in part of his conversation was talking about the um fda it was talking about his marketing uh their their website design their accounting so it was really um a shark tank investors you know providing him with capital it was just really great to hear we also had back in the fall uh ilona samoji and corey nash from the ball and socket came in so we brought in a little non-profit and they shared with us um their experiences of of bringing the ball and socket art center to life and that's really exciting for our community um and then lastly the curriculum connections that we make and the skills that our kids learn when they part i'm putting in a huge a little shameless shamelessly mentioning our business clubs i wanted to share with you um our three clubs they all had big competitive events this past spring and i have our deca club they compete our students competed against about 500 to 600 other students statewide we had 29 cheshire high school students compete 14 of them placed in different categories so they were professionally dressed they had lasers they they looked the part they prepared and it was just a wonderful experience extending what they've learned in the classroom um and beyond so that was really awesome we had oh i have a little bit more sorry about that um we had our future business of lee of future business leaders of america compete also um this past spring uh nine of our students competed four of them placed and i will share with you those students placed in [Music] accounting accounting one business calculations and we had two teams that put together business plans uh and i i will share their um their advisor said our students demonstrated their knowledge and business skills with integrity and true professionalism isn't that what we're looking for for our students to take what they've learned in the classroom and then take it to the next level and then lastly our mock trial club those students we have 30 students who are actively engaged in the mock trial club they work with their advisor they work with a a local attorney they practice twice a week they have meetings at like 6 30 a.m and um they also practice on saturdays to prepare for the um mock trial events that they um participated in this uh this past or for the past several years but our students have really taken their learning and that their that they have here that they're receiving here at cheshire high school and taking that to the next level and it all starts though with the lessons that our teachers preparing that they're putting together in the classroom and that the opportunity that they had to work with with the curriculum writing institute was really a wonderful experience and a powerful tool that they've learned from um and that they will use going forward and the time they were provided with i think you've heard you've heard us mention time quite a few times is so important to have that chunk of time and to be able to collaborate um with colleagues to really do meaningful meaningful planning for our students in our classes so i will turn the floor uh back over to marlene or jeff no i thank you very much sure go ahead tell me sure i was gonna say first off everyone a phenomenal job tonight it's so exciting seeing all this and i would say that on the on the business side i'm so happy to see um teaching our kids just the basic fundamental traits that will carry you through life and you mentioned it be on time being professional dress for success uh even making cold calls right because you know we're our you know my even my daughters are in college but they grew up with a phone generation and uh you know it wasn't until they got into the media thing that they had to learn those soft skills they had a chance to do in high school so um that's awesome i see the passion i bring that across i'm not surprised that the feedback we get from our employers that our students are working professionally with integrity that's i want to see that secondly um i hear more often than not from businesses in cheshire that they're literally dying to hire students for internships job shadows what's the best way to get those employers in touch and hooked into this program so that they could have a seat at the table and tell you about the opportunities i hear this frequently it's it's it's a number it's a number of businesses there's a and even where i work at the regional water authority there's a whole uh slew of opportunities for job shadowing in environmental science sciences biology arborists i can easily get contacts if into the school system if students are interested in business utilities management those i feel as a you i even hire folks undergraduate uh students out of stomach university into the technology program and they're great students um they're just learning a lot of these soft skills and it's nice to see that so i feel like there's a wealth of opportunities up there for students to to get an idea of what's possible how do i how do i follow these opportunities too there's so many options i don't want to just totally jump on mike's but in the business department i mean leslie talked about a real myriad of of opportunities that our kids have and some of that is through internships but our guidance department also has other connections but between michelle kituchi our guidance director at the high school and leslie they they've got a gazillion things that we could connect people into or you know they know so many students that are within the department that have these passions that make them so successful in these opportunities that they might be able to make a connection there too yeah i i sound like there's more opportunities than we can fill with students is that about right well that's a good problem to have and i will say you know ryan murphy was also um helping us uh place some of our interns as well so is it's a it's a group effort it's not just that there's no there's no one point but if you contacted any any of us um we hopefully would be able to find um to find a fit or that we could contact um contact you and see if there's uh so that being said i'm gonna make a shameless plug for myself at work anyone that might be interested in software development cyber security uh job shadowing over the summer i'd be happy they just sent the junior class a video message yesterday inviting any interested students to intern or do a mastery based performance assessment with me for communications support and marlene saw the email and said i want one too you know we want an intern so there are certainly there are so many talented kids that and passionate kids too that attend our schools that you know we want to connect them into these opportunities and help them evolve uh personally professionally and uh it's great that we got an opportunity to see some of these opportunities our kids have is it's really powerful thank you i'm just going to um just echo what tony said in terms of these uh the skills that you've got the career survey the resume the aurora i would think every kid in this school would want to go through those skills and we should be encouraging them because there's nothing that builds your confidence more than knowing you can walk in to an interview and you at least have your first sentence done because everything else will follow but even you know the how to write a decent email um and use grammar and how to speak on a telephone and you know the internet has just destroyed communications and so many i i mean i won't even call ello bean anymore i just because i don't want to talk to somebody which is terrible so um i know and they're the nicest people in the world but there's just this psychological wall that has been built up in these kids i think are are suffering from it and so you know i mean i'm happy to volunteer my service it's not that the most articulate person but you know i think we all should be working with these students and young adults to get them into the market so they can succeed so um i just i echo what you say um i do have one other question when you guys do a are you mapping out an entire year or just a single unit we start with a single unit the curriculum writing institute the goal going in was to write one unit um i i had an opportunity i think i wrote close to three units okay because there's because it was all there it was like a you know it was a one-stop shop so so in terms of correct when you write a curriculum that with the backwards design model you start like years ago you'd write curriculum say okay let's start at 1.1 and let's what's our objective and what are our learning tasks um but we would create units of instruction which could include years ago was chapters so it could be chapters one two three could be at one unit that answers yeah and so as you do these these um uh institutes every year eventually you'll have your library that you talked about and so then you'd hope but it's a it's really like with curriculum with especially with business it's a live document yeah it's changing like i teach an investing course it's constantly changing so you have to go back which is nice with with the template that we have that's shared with everybody if there's multiple teachers involved you go into the document you can just change it you change the links you change the tasks the activities so it's a live document the goal in three to five years is to have that library so that when we hire someone they can go to the library and pick out you know the digital library and say okay this is this is what i'm going to teach this year but knowing full well that it's you know it's always changing ever evolving because of the way things work and how many new resources and things we have but but the goal for the project yes is to have as much housed as we can okay i just want to put a plug in because what i'm hearing loud and clear is that this professional development is so integral and it pays off in spades for our students and so i feel like our task as the board of education is to be constantly your cheerleaders for this professional development because teachers are professionals they want this professional development you talk about the time and as an educator myself i know there's there's nothing like having that block five days five complete days of time that you're just dedicating to this these are big tasks right but look what happens when you're given that time and you're given the resources to be able to develop just one unit right and if you go year after year you're developing more and more as you go along you're making that connections all the way through from from k through 12 so you know what's happening all along the way and there are are not gaps in the curriculum for any students and um and we're connecting everything to the standards as um you know you can we can say things about how much we dislike common core but standards are important and um i do i think it's fantastic and i pledge to be your cheerleader as i have been in the past and some of that cheerleading needs to come at budget time quite frankly yeah i i do want to commend the board you know because i over the last several years the board has been incredibly supportive when we've talked about things like early release time and this we can't do this in you know february maybe just give kids a week off or whatever but the financial support has been there for things like the curriculum institute things uh like the early dismissal time and i do wanna thank you and i think that's some of the importance of having the presentations you've seen throughout the year because it's important for us that you and the community sees how that time and investment translates to authentic problem solving for our kids and that it's meaningful you know because i i think when you don't see that you don't appreciate it and so i'm glad that you and i appreciate you guys taking the time to you know really digest these these presentations throughout the year and as we wrap up our last uh you know showcase tonight i also again want to acknowledge marlene and her team um kevin uh linda van wagnen has been a great resource for us but marlene was really passionate about providing a great opportunity for our staff to not just write curriculum i think that would have been one thing but you know mike you heard repeatedly talk about the instruction the the coaching that our people had in that and marlene made that possible and so i just want to commend her and and all of our teachers who who participated and you again for uh making it possible so thank you yeah um so i'm not an educator i'm a cpa but this definitely resonates with me because i can only imagine i would love the opportunity to have one week with no emails no phone calls and just think of how much forward progress i could make in my own job um it makes it makes a lot of sense to me i really like the level of excitement that i've seen from the teachers who have spoken about it because i hope and i i feel that that excitement probably goes into the classroom and that for me thinking back as a you know as a student it can be inspiring there was um so as i said i'm a cpa i would not be i could not have gotten through principles or accounting principles of accounting in college without having taken the county one and accounting two here with miss jacoby 30 35 years ago um but no i i'm a true believer that what what you're doing in the business department and throughout the cheshire public schools is progressing people progressing the kids to shaping lives and we say we don't graduate transcripts graduate people in in cultivating those passions that's why these guys went into the job that's great thanks for sharing that um so i i have a question about uh finding the interest you say like you were talking about internships before this really relates to probably all the cheshire public schools probably more so at the high school level but what i think of is how do the how do the teachers how do the schools connect with the kids and i don't mean to make this like an hour-long conversation but the concern that i have is that you have the extroverts who want to talk all the time and you're the introverts i'm thinking of myself although it may not come across that way but i i i often have an introvert you know there are students who are there are students who are shy and more reserved and how do those connections get made where you know even if it's just walking out of the classroom and you pick up on a subtle interest that's not necessarily something that would be obvious you know i mean if you play a sport here people are going to know it but if you if you're writing code at home maybe nobody knows it so what happens is i mean totally informal is there anything formal i can't share with you in our personal finance classes that's one of the first activities that the students do terry spoke about using the virtual virtual job shadow it's an online resource and they take a little interest survey and the results are really pretty good and we've said to the kids don't choose anything in the middle just go with your gut i i'm interested in this or i'm not and that's one way they kind of can go through and maybe not narrow down but it'll give them some for the student that's not sure what area of interest they want to explore it'll give them some ideas but all of our other disciplines and areas and other clubs and activities and in sports those you know those are other ways too that students get involved and they meet new people they hear new things so whether it's in personal finance class or in a a different discipline and you know uh guest speakers in in other classes there's lots of ways that our students um and the through the mastery-based performance assessment that's another area or avenue where students can explore their particular area of interest or a passion but i think at the heart of what you're saying too i'm sorry but at the heart of what you're saying is it's a relationship it's getting to know kids yeah and you know the elementary grade i think it's it's obvious that that's a little bit easier that you have those students in your room all day every day when you get to the middle school you're on t and that's always the fear i'm being a middle school principal that is going to get lost when they go to middle school amongst you know the team whatever and we would mike would reiterate that we make a big school small by putting kids and teams and getting to know them and we do a lot of activities grounded in that at this level we have things like our advisory programs where a small group of students is with one adult for four years and he gets to know that person gets to know them better of course you know you'll have situations like the class where you are taking interest inventories uh or in english where you're conferencing with your english teacher and you get to know them much differently but it is important that we have relationships with all of our kids and that yeah that's part of that and that's how you get to know kids and bring out those talents and invest foster those within them marlene and jumped out is so true i had this shy young lady had her in computer central had her microsoft office one had her microsoft office too had her again in internship making the connections the introvert would barely look at you in the eye but she wanted to work in an office so contacted mr phil newton and he said sure send her over working in allstate and by the end of our internship phil knew and had her making calls to insurance owners who were not paying their bills but she wasn't so introverted at the end of her internship i'll i'll just say that i i think k through 12 that the teachers that we have and the way that they connect with kids it's a it's a passion for our teachers and i'll just say coming in here today this morning i might have just said i'm going to go into the high school for 20 minutes i i can't go 10 feet without somebody telling me oh did you used to have so and so or this just happened with this child in the class or or this kids just came up with this idea in the assistant principal's office this morning so there's a great um energy around and i think that's a culture that's been fostered and really built for her yeah you saw the enthusiasm when our teachers throughout this year have been presenting projects that are so authentic in nature and you know we may have nightmares of going to school and reading the chapter you know the bold words we're going to define those bold words you know that you know whether it be math we're just going to do this worksheet that it was more route in nature and our goal and this provides time for creativity and engagement what do our students need to know how we will we know that they can do these things let's design engaging tasks to measure to what degree they can do these things and that builds the passion for them to want to to learn them and that's really powerful marking those patterns yeah sparking the passions that our kids have so appreciate you guys and at least in sharing you know what you've done today thank you [Applause] well that's a pretty agenda i think most folks want to probably get all right i'm sorry i went back to everybody but i before you journal i just want to say and sean hunter has agreed thank you so much for being here this evening folks for a lot of time as it is and i really appreciate the fact that you took your own time to attend to see another good workshop that just shows your passion i'm not surprised so i do know it it does it's not going to notice we appreciate what you're doing so and we're seeing our kids which isn't better so again thank you um that being said i have a motion to adjourn uh sam and seconded behind faith all those in favor is

what do you mean it was long yes but she's laughing but it was well done and i was wondering because some of the a couple of the teachers that asked me beforehand how are people how are they gonna do this and i said well they used to have everybody come up on stage i said i don't know if they're gonna do the same thing and luckily they didn't because we still ran over till like 10 30 and it was supposed to be 9 30 i think so but it's still it was nice to know that they acknowledge the teachers and all and but i i have to say this though we have been so successful in all these previous years that we always have a semi-finalist or a finalist not a semi but a fine you know one of the two and uh we always usually and the credit union usually has a special cocktail hour beforehand they didn't have that this year or they did wait a minute we didn't have any finalists so i didn't get an invitation i was bummed next year we're going finally so she could attend cocktail hour [Laughter] right that's always i like no no i enjoy that because i get to see a lot of these people who used to be in anaheim that are in other school districts now you know they're you know several of our principals have moved to different districts and so so you get to see them and it's a nice time to you know chit-chat and then um i went to the pta honorary service awards which was held on a tuesday evening i think it was wednesday evening anyway it was in the evening at cypress high school and they chose to have it outside because of concerns i guess for covet inside but it got a little chilly but it was and uh but it was very nicely done they had a nice caterer even though the caterer canceled on them two weeks before the you know the event and then she had to kind of do a bunch of stuff but i did have to leave early because i was starting to freeze so um and i had us and i had a jacket it was cold yes it was and then i went to the catella green awards and very well done this was for the entire state they were passing out you know awards for the whole state we thought at first it was just going to be catella but no it ended up being there were schools from all the way up and down the state and i was amazed rialto yes got about six or eight seems at least six six awards yeah yeah um so that school district has really gone green and you know their awards were like on top of awards and because they had won awards before and they were getting another awards you know sort of like adding to it and i thought wow you know that's really something but we're doing good we started with catella and you know and we can do more stuff and i think magnolia might be the next one huh you know so anyway and that is about what i did this month so far thank you miss piercy miss randall treyo so just to piggyback on that um so i think those awards were not all gold we got a gold award we got the top award those were bronze and silvers that those oh yeah right no so we'll just brag about our our gold award but from my understanding uh these staff had only a week to prepare for that that event they did we didn't know it was that we were hosting all of those so they had only about a week to prepare and it was uh over and above what i was expecting and just so proud and uh mike and i were in the parking lot uh chit-chatting as people were leaving and everybody was leaving with smiles and celebration they they loved our our our teachers they loved our students the tours they loved what we were doing there and the food it was just uh amazing yeah everybody the students planned the menu for the little lunch boxes and produce it all in the culinary arts i i and failed to mention that because it was so nice the way they set everything up they had all the cheerleaders and the and the song kids at the gate to greet everybody they had a nice set up in front of the auditorium of tables outside and they had the jazz band playing on the inside beforehand they really did an excellent job and then after the awards they took us on uh tours and toured us through the the garden and around through the uh what what did we call the greens our drops program yeah yeah the drops program and and showed us how to test for ph factor or a city i mean just really well done oh yeah so kudos to our staff staff over there and students and just from when you entered till you exited it was just a really great celebration yes awesome job um i attended the ocsba and axa joint dinner we as the organization csba for the orange county region 15 honored dr clayton chao and al maharas and they both didn't know that they were getting the award they thought each other were getting the award and uh i've never seen uh two uh you know most humble acceptance speeches and just so honored to um to be acknowledged and then so um you know generous with their praise of each other going through this pandemic orange county uh you know dr clayton chow if you don't know director of health services healthcare agency health healthcare agency um his the person before him uh death threats so i know he had death threats during the pandemic but was firm in his resolve to help orange county get through the pandemic and just such a humble gracious man he holds a phd at a doctorate a psychologist and doctor of education which is just amazing who knew that about him but you know not only leading the county but actually um during the pandemic holding meetings with the two um districts or cities that um had the uh the most um um were who were most affected on santa ana and anaheim and i mean the fact that he thought to do that was just amazing that he needed to hear from us and how we were doing and what we what we could ask of him so just so deserving of this award and he mentioned that orange county was the first county in the nation to give vaccinations for 65 and above started that and then the state initiated that so um just a tremendous human being to know and then almaharas we all um know what he's experiencing um and so uh it was just really a memorable evening uh to be there and witness that so grateful uh to those two uh of course the soapbox speeches were tremendous i'm so proud of the teachers that are helping our students um with those speeches but the ideas and the the visions and the topics of of our students was so broad and so [Music] humane you know they were talking about refugees they were talking about just just a number of topics that we can be so proud of of course our rop celebration of success um al and i were there to honor our two students and al and i were actually fighting over one of our students both of them were tremendous uh but one of them was just she just she just took our heart away she interviewed so well she was a culinary student um and she is just going to take the world by storm we're going to remember her um and uh so al and i were fighting over meeting her but we actually got to meet her before uh the the uh ceremony so we we were so proud um and the teacher of the year celebration was amazing as usual and yes it was long we usually get out right when the fireworks are happening so we miss the fireworks but it was a great celebration um to be a part of and um honoring i'm so glad that they were able to honor the 21 and 22 teachers of the year and um semapalooza over the top oh my goodness um from start to to finish um uh congratulations to um jackie counts this was her vision her idea and boy um it was it was paluzzoing that's a word it was really exciting i felt like there was just a buzz on magnolia's campus and parents were just amazed they were bussing our students from anaheim elementary sixth grade students to come over there which i thought was a great idea perfect age our students were performing our ambassadors were ambassading and it was just a celebration of the tremendous work of our teachers and our students and i was just uh so proud to to see that anaheim collaborative yeah i think mike wanted real quickly um steemapalooza though shout out to amy quan and her team yes for implementing this year so great job yes yes yes absolutely anaheim collaborative um i had to come to manuel's last meeting i wanted to support him your speech was there wasn't a dry eye in the building it showed just how much you love our district just how hard you've worked your story about the band that when you first started the meetings there was a lot of shouting there was a lot of uh you know there was a lot of disagreement a lot of pushback but in the end i think anaheim union came out a winner because of you in your hard work your dedication to our students and at the end are during the introductions um a lot of our partners in the um anaheim collaborative honored manuel and um boy they love him um if not more or just as much as we do and they are so grateful um it just shows the dedication that you have um for our district and um we're sure gonna miss you um i am i mean i miss you is this your last meeting with us by the way we have one more two more two more okay good okay i don't have to i don't have to think about that yet two more meetings all right all right so but it was it was it was amazing um to hear um uh how how you've inspired and even tonight we heard another one of your mentees but for you to introduce um she's the vice chair of cal state fullerton vice president of cal state fullerton and for you to announce her and then for her to quantify you as your teacher you know and how you mentored her is just a testament of your humanity your kindness your love of students and i know you were so proud of her and we're all proud of you so thank you and that's my report um cbs 11 o'clock news last saturday showed a celebration of earth day and my oak my there were five guys from oxford academy and charles pham ethan pham and toy deep d-i-e-p and apparently for this project they decided that they wanted to do a plastic collection of toxic pollution at huntington beach so they were filmed down there and interviewed and spoke about it and they said that some of their classmates had decided to work on deforestation and forest fires so i don't know if you knew about that but it was a delightful surprise and see them cleaning up the beach we all know how devastating that is and the green ribbon awards ceremony at catella was remarkable and the greeting by all the pom gals when we walked in from the from the parking lot and beautiful ceremony in rialto i was just almost overwhelmed with all of their projects but it's just great information for other districts and the insurance committee went on and student discipline was discontinued so not discontinued but cancelled so that's it thank you student discipline was not discontinued we were discontinued the meeting or this is a committee right no no okay or make sure that we highlight that okay great we're good huh all right he's telling you all right short and sweet um years of service via oh that's right the uh distance was very enjoyable even though we've been better to be in person but still you did a good job next year every student succeeds miss percy and i went to the yeah that was over in cyprus and they honor recognized students that have some some challenges in the cypress school district so that was a real pleasure to be there the soapbox speeches were just phenomenal it's amazing what our students can do the way they present themselves i came across everybody did a great job phenomenal job in their abilities kennedy had on every 15-minute program over two days and you probably know what every 15 minutes is is it used to be wherever 15 minutes somebody in the u.s is killed from alcohol-related injury well over the years it has now moved to every 55 minutes because of education and i'm sure education of seat belts uh and uh you know the hopefully the programs in schools um minimizing the uh the alcohol use etc and and teenagers so that was very good to hear still a long ways to go um i was able to log into the cyber security uh webinar but i had to log out after only a few minutes because i had to go i also had to go take care of two grandsons it was one of those grandpa get over here so okay click um steemapalooza as people said it was fantastic the number of people there were actually amazing more than i've ever seen there before it was very crowded very exciting you could see the excitement feel the excitement in the air there i love seeing the uh the garden and the progression it's making so you know i'm looking forward to coming back after the summer break and seeing what that area is going to look like with the as it matures during the next period of time uh sister city commission meeting i didn't make it i know you didn't it was it was 10 minutes 15 minutes long oh wow shortest one i've ever attended i barely got there just in time to make the quorum so that we could approve uh something and then it was like it's over so yeah it was very quick uh so we didn't get too much accomplished but um teacher of the year awards were always um amazing to see and as people said it was uh over the two years but very quick comparably speaking if it had gone actually the normal two years it would have been we would have just gotten out i think the pt pta hsa awards at cyprus as it was mentioned it was cold and i wasn't prepared i was wearing a short sleeve shirt not thinking it was going to be outside and it was freezing i finally had to go out to the car and get out my emergency sweatshirt always carry emergency clothes with you and you never know what's gonna happen i actually had two sweatshirts in it but i only put on one scalp it was still cold brian always the boy scout yeah you bet still i'm still a boy scout leader after 34 years yeah still him uh never lose that uh the the green ribbon awards was was fantastic seeing what everybody was doing there all the recognition they were getting and then uh this last saturday i attended the it's the first uh la palma festival and nations which was a parade and then then like a um um event in the park where they have rides and booths and all that for the for the locals or anybody that could have been there um didn't have to be local so that was that was fun it was short shorter than it used to be when it was well i forget what it was called la palma days but which we used to be on veterans day weekend so it's a different concept since the covet is now over and uh that's my report but i just want to give people an education this is a personal thing that just happened to me recently and it was a plumbing issue and i had pulled called a plumber out because i couldn't resolve the problem myself i got to a point and i just couldn't go any further so i called out some professional plumbers and as soon as they walked in the door i almost knew where they were going and when they left i was i was coming to the last board meeting the our special board meeting so i was in my in my shirt tie so i knew i had to leave they couldn't stand there and talk to me and they threw out a number of ten to twelve thousand dollars to resolve this plumbing issue and i looked at myself uh-uh and i walked out and they said well we'll send you the quote i said great so i happen to have a plumbing friend of mine that had moved and they were living down near lake elsinore i called him on the phone and he says they are so unethical he says they give plumbers a bad name and he says i'll be there on saturday which is a couple days so he came over to to my house on his own time basically and he didn't do it for free but he gave me uh it was he had to come back the second saturday the whole job was under three hundred dollars now i got to thinking if these guys had come to say my mother-in-law's house or some other elderly person's house and throughout that number they probably oh my god how am i going to do this but okay i will do it they would have walked away with murder almost so whenever you get in a situation where these numbers are ridiculous don't just jump and say oh my god okay i'll do it always get second and third and fourth quotes no matter what the emergency is even if you have to go next door and use the bathroom you know just you know just i could have thrown away a whole lot of money so just words to the wise unfortunately there's a lot of that going on right yeah well thank you mr o'neill i think that was uh good advice thank you for that i know we we discussed it last time when you came to the meeting as well um all right well thank you very much in um yeah i thank you for reminding me of the years of service i actually didn't put it on my list here but that was great thank you brad for even keeping it entertaining i know i had to stay there only for a little bit because i had to run out to another meeting but thank you for doing that hopefully we'll do that next year in person and then uh rop celebration i know anne marie mentioned it um we that or the student i'm trying to recollect her name right now she's a catalyst student culinary arts student she works for uh on a part-time she works for um bakery and i'll tell you she is going to wow our district in a few years she is amazing i i stopped by the lcap meetings that we had again thank you very much for giving the opportunity to speak but it was great to see all of our parents and our student leaders especially they were all advocating for mental health so that was great green ribbon again i think it's key for us i want to thank roxanna hernandez and her team there i didn't know until the day that it was actually uh was for the entire state and then they did a fantastic job nobody would have known that it was less than 10 days of preparation everybody that i spoke to including supervisor doug chafee was amazed at the the way that our students did not only did the tour but we got personal box lunches so that was great great touch so please pass that on great work from the team and they made us look good teacher of the year was awesome i think again culminating two years that was awesome there steemapalooza what can i say i i've had neighbors who didn't have kids in the district who went there because their cousins heard of it and wanted to join and see and they were singing the praises of auhsd and so kudos to jackie for actually coming coming up with the idea and amy quan and team for really putting on an amazing show and the magnolia team as well i think they all did a fantastic job of hosting it we just i mean this is this is public education i think that's what we do is to uh showcase what we are doing in the entire district so that way people know that public education is still alive and well and we're doing great work so i i was amazing patty for having the facilities that were amazing and the groundskeepers everybody flowers were in bloom it was all around i'm i was particularly amazed at i don't know if anybody got the opportunity to go to the uh entrepreneurial section we had a student from anaheim high school who was doing uh jewelry and she just had her six 000 sale online so these are our students who are being so effective and then i we i was walking towards another student another booth where they were creating keyboards for gaming and they were selling it for 150 and i was asking how much the parts were and they like bought it for like some 15 bucks or 20 bucks on online and they were creating it custom making it right so i want to congratulate our teachers for actually really giving that ideas to our students it was nice to see our team out there full force soapbox again uh amazing amazing students and amazing topics uh did did we we didn't give the topics right they picked the topics and it was amazing to see that our students will pick topics which were not only topic curl but so deep i mean the student who actually dale a student who won the first place and spoke about refugees and she called to action right adults are putting us in this position and it was an amazing speech so i want to highlight that anaheim collaborative what can i say we are all going to miss you manuel i'm going to miss my twin brother from the district yeah so we got to make we got to make up here well i'm leaving too so i guess we're it's timely all right that's all good we'll come back we'll charge the district for getting our appearance all right let's go all right um anaheim oh anaheim high school coffee with principal first time we were back after um after the pandemic the first time in person so that was amazing we had a packed house there and parents were very enthused to come back on campus so that was great i also attended anaheim high school just last tuesday we had students who actually wrote are not wrote but they were circulating a petition uh regarding the gym and how hot the gym was i'm glad that i spoke to nancy ian to get some information we spoke to the students kind of talk to them about ventilation and that they're in line to get their ventilation fixed uh at the gym they were happy about it but they also wanted to make sure that it happened soon so i'm bringing the message to you and the rest of the district i know they're going to be here hopefully to speak they amaze me too like the cypress students who came last last board meeting they actually put together a uh this thick of a report with testimony and what it does to health and all that and it was great so i told them you know what take the opportunity to come in wow our board and put some pressure on nancy so that we could get that done soon so so we're going to get that done there and then i also uh stopped by uh well part of those students then another teacher emailed me and said look we had some more students who wanted to speak to you about urinals so i'm going to be i'm going to be coming to you about that in a few days but i'm actually going to meet those students on monday so they wanted to present it to me so i'm going to bring more to-do lists for you more or less no it was uh more like a they want well i've not seen it the petition yet from what i was told that they wanted like dividers and all that right so yeah so i think it's an easy fix but i i well i don't know if it's an easy fix but for me it was a six yeah if not i'll buy some stuff from home depot and get it done that's good all right and then i also stopped by sycamore junior high dla spring picnic they always put together a great event and every year it's been growing in terms of students and parents participating that was great to see i also want to congratulate anaheim high school baseball for being the orange league champions and oh congratulations to anaheim high school for being the democracy school i know that we have an event this saturday to accept that award too having said that looking at my chicken scratch i can't read the last one so i'll keep that one i think l cap yep i did mention i'll keep yeah okay yeah okay so

uh thank you so we were discussing [Music] the possible action of the buzzperson position this is linda i'm sorry did you want to say something first president nico no okay okay i am wondering um for any of those other folks down the table um if you can tell us what your idea of an ombuds person would be i would like to hear a little bit more some different um perspectives on this we've heard from annette and i would like to get some different input so for me personally to have a better understanding of others expectations um linda this is david uh we do have an umbuzz person policy uh that does set out the responsibility and the role of the umbuds person david can i um this is uk i'm going by what i know working in des and having an ombudspersman specifically for voc rehab um the overarching goal is to make sure that there is neutrality in the process and that people have access to the process and that they understand what options are available to them um in my mind it could function as because the position is in policy it could function as part of the hr team but maybe not report to the hr supervisor maybe report like annette had mentioned maybe report directly to annette and then again i think it is to make sure there is um for lack of a better word veracity in oversight of the process to make sure that people feel that their concerns are being heard that they understand the options available to them under policy whether it's a complaint or a grievance and that it is being seen to conclusion i think where we were hearing concerns is that people felt like and again whether we have verification of that or not is not the issue at this point the the the point is people are feeling like they bring up their concern and it ends right there so there needs to be that that follow-up and closure loop to make sure that they understand what what has happened with their complaint and what the result was of that complaint process this is lynn i agree with with sue k i've heard similar situations where staff didn't feel that they were being heard or it wasn't being thought through so this would be a neutral person that can help guide them to through the process and who they can talk to um i think the staff feels that they really need that and and i would support that and this is uk again i i agree i don't based on the use that we had previously um i don't know that it needs to be more than um a part-time person um but i do think there are other opportunities within the role from a staff education even a community parent education piece to make sure that people are clear on the policy and the policy is accessible to everybody so i do think there are things that could make it go from maybe five hours to a i don't know 10 15 20 hour position but i do think that accountability piece should come from the superintendent uh this is david um and further to suit his point the um buds person isn't the the historic usage of of the above the person was very low um it over the three years that we had the former ombuds person we spent about seven thousand dollars a year uh on that person's work so it was you know it ebbed and flowed some months she didn't do any work because there was nothing other she did more but on a year-to-year basis it was you know very very minimal and it's you know much less than part-time um and this is aaron i would just echo from my perspective what suke was saying in terms of kind of the role and responsibility of an ombuds person in state government and i think even looking at the position description as well i think there's also value and benefit in understanding if there are systematic deficiencies that are a result of the way that the policy has either been implemented or drafted for the board to understand and potentially look at those policies or linda first okay this is linda and i want to follow up on an additional question you mentioned the policy if i recall correctly a couple three years ago we did look at the policies for a grievance process and a complaint process which are already in the handbook for staff and is is that sufficient or not and that's something that i don't fully understand and admittedly i haven't heard any complaints while some of the rest of you seem to have heard some complaints that um i haven't heard from staff who have had those kinds of concerns and so it seems perhaps there are two different groups of us some of us me maybe just me i'm not going to lump pv in with me but i wasn't aware of these people haven't been coming to me with that um so i think you know figuring out a way to balance that complaint process would be i think would be a good thing sure this is david um about five years ago maybe it was six i'm not exactly certain i'd have to go back and check we undertook a revision of the complaint and grievance process there were seven or eight different processes depending on who you were and what the substance of the issue was and people were a little confused about which to use and what we did is we simplified those so we just have i believe four of them now depending on if you're a parent or student a staff member or a member of the public and i think the the staff one has kind of two subparts one uh relates to certain issues of employment and others relate to other issues of employment that's the difference between a complaint and a grievance and those are different processes so we we simplified that and we added the mbudsperson to kind of hear complaints or hear issues that they didn't really know where to go if that makes sense they didn't know how to proceed with something and the buzz person would help them through that process and it could be filing a complaint it could be filing grievance it could be resolving something more informally um it could be something that someone just misunderstood but the ambassador person reported that to us on a regular basis and we were able to see you know what the vice versa was dealing with so as you know as an example um the uh one of the northern offices was moved from flagstaff to sedona a few years ago and the umbuds person fielded i think 21 complaints if i were i'm remembering offhand it might be more or less than that but it was a lot and we were able to see that you know there were there were some some some reasons for that now we you know we talked with the staff and the staff had reasons as the leadership had reasons as to why that move was made but again it was an issue that that came up and that we knew about i don't think that we necessarily would know about it otherwise and if we got there's not really a good mechanism for us to to understand that good that's okay this is uk again um i think something else to take a look at in looking at hiring an ombudsman position is even with the processes in place there are there are different ways to approach a resolution and it could be facilitating a conversation between the person who has the complaint and the person who made a decision that they are complaining about it could be um so more like a mediation sort of perspective it could also be elevating something in my mind to a higher decision authority for review if it warrants it so i do think there are opportunities to utilize them in some strategic ways to handle and look at resolution to these complaints and then be able to report back not only to the superintendent but then provide some of that data on a monthly basis to to the board as far as how those complaints or grievances were categorized by number and then the different steps or um that or how many went to mediation how many went to a higher authority for review and maybe overturning a decision so being able to sort of track that data longitudinally to see how if having a person in place actually has caused some of those things to resolve at the lowest level and and maybe see a reduction in the number of complaints this is pv i've been thinking on this for a while and listening to folks comments and it makes me wonder i do understand the prior history when we did have an ombudsperson that person was only utilized maybe five hours a week and if we had an ombudsperson reporting directly to the superintendent and they were held accountable and held to a standard or an expectation um that was indeed neutral um i imagine that we could probably see um the superintendent and her leadership team make that position a full 40 hour position which would mean that person could technically take more active a more active role within the agency become more directly involved and make it well known that that person is present and make them recognized and and make staff aware of who they are i think one thing that did come up in our previous conversation was the fact that um people um you know took a training for a complaint and grievance process but they said they didn't know how to actually file a complaint or a grievance so obviously that training is not effective and that's something that an unbunz person could take responsibility for to look into and modify um make sure that that's being addressed maybe there needs to be a test something to demonstrate um that that people understand and that ombudsperson's role would be to approach the superintendent from a neutral perspective and then the superintendent can bring it to the board and that would be a good way to see that position become full-time fully utilized in order to maintain and and really push forward our strategic plan um that we've been working on for the agency this is uk again um just as an idea or a suggestion in expanding this role this could be somebody that also works at a again i think it could be part of an hr team but reporting directly to the superintendent looking at overall agency not just the campuses but the co-ops as well from a diversity equity inclusion and accessibility standpoint as well so not only handling some of those internal grievances but then making sure that the the agency as a whole are meeting those requirements from a legal standpoint under 504 ada if sports are involved title ix those types of things as well yes this is pv exactly what my thoughts are i could see that really expanding pretty quickly and not just for internal use but also more for parents if they have a grievance or a disagreement with the iep or services that are being provided that ombuds person can be involved as a neutral person to help them figure out the appropriate approach or appropriate avenue and bring that to the superintendent for awareness bring it to the board if necessary look at contract disagreements figure out a neutral way to have those kinds of conversations if something can't be resolved with the contract department then again having that neutral perspective i i can see that really easily broadening very quickly if we have an active person taking an active role within the agency i can see that developing very fast thank you um so you know from here i mean it seems that you know having a buds person is it doesn't seem that anyone doesn't want to do that um so the next item would be or the next idea would be to to form that advisor committee with just one or two members on it to interview candidates that that we find for the position this is pv um i mentioned previously that um i disagree with that approach only because um since i've been on the board we have had this conversation two or three times and we still were not able to provide a solution or figure out how to fill that position and we as a board have faced some challenges in filling that position previously i think that the superintendent's recommendation recommendation is reasonable if we need to provide a compromise i'm fine with that um but i would like to make the emotion that the superintendent have the authority to um select an ombuds person through an interview process and fill that position i think it is important that the position be filled prior to the new school year starting is it open for discussion the motion yeah yeah no it hasn't been seconded it's looking for discussion um the only thing i would like to see may be added um so i'm going to step back i um what i think i would like to see happen is maybe to see the pdq expanded a little bit to include maybe some other potential accountability standards that um is is could be expected in the position how the position could potentially grow i i don't have a problem um having annette and the leadership team um select a candidate but i do think it would be good maybe to define the role a little bit more extensively like how it will be housed you know within the agency who the direct report is to what some of the accountability standards other than just taking in complaints would be i think some of that could be fleshed out a little bit more mrs pv are you saying that you want to see that expansion of the pdq before the candidate's election process begins so the reason i ask is because the next board meeting is a ways out and so that means we would really be pushing it into the new school year starting if we voted on that recommendation which i do agree with but if we were to wait and vote at that time then they couldn't start the formal search until really after the school year had already started we're into the fall and by that time um i'm i'm wondering if perhaps we could do those at the same time meaning the leadership team makes a candidate selection and revises the pdq outlines their responsibilities and accountability process and bring that to the board for the july meeting we could have a conversation of both and modify as needed i this is okay i don't think the pdq would need to be approved by the board i think that could be done internally so i do think that could be happening at the same time this is lynn i would think we'd need a complete job description and know what all the duties and responsibilities are of that if we were to add in change before we start looking for somebody so we can tell them what this job is that we're asking them to do this is linda yes i would feel better about that as well when if we had a very specific understanding of the roles and responsibilities of that position and knew what to expect i would prefer to do that first see that first to make sure we have something clear before we um we go through with that process and this is pv technically i believe we already have a pdq from the previous ombuds person is that correct superintendent reichman can you confirm that that's and superintendent reichman is saying yes we do have a pdq that is correct um and it is attached to your agenda as a matter of fact this is pv so that being said i think that they could make the modifications to the existing pdq as needed we can review that make sure we agree with it but at the same time they should be able to start moving forward and at least select a candidate i don't mind if for example they give us their top two or three and bring those to the board i would be fine with that if superintendent reichman makes this election herself i would be fine with that as well but i do think that we need to get moving on this this is aaron i think it's going to be a little bit challenging to go to go out and try to recruit candidates when the position had description hasn't been fully scoped out to whether it's a 40 hour a week type of position or continuing as is as more of a five hour as needed so i think it's hard to go out and recruit without having that more concretely defined if there is a desire to expand the role into other areas that that seems to me like it would need to be more fully scoped out first this is pv okay so maybe i'm not explaining myself clearly and i apologize allow me to rephrase we already have a pdq we already have a position description so we could tell the superintendent to please go ahead and modify that as you see fit for a full-time position that would be reporting directly to the superintendent um so for example that could include sue kaye's um discussion about being part of the hr team but still reporting directly to superintendent um so it would include the responsibilities of reporting and and get going with that job cert or that candidate search and by the next meeting she can bring us that modified position description as well as a candidate and we still technically have to review and approve their contract so we can do a one-year contract take a look at how that goes and we can essentially reserve the right to modify the pdq as necessary so if they make a recommendation for a candidate and we want to add something to the pdq that that person does not want if after we've modified the pdq then then they have every right to not take the position and we can go to the second or third choice so i think if we are given the opportunity to kind of make a trial run of that modified as we go my only caution would be that we continue to bring up this topic and we haven't made any progress on it so i would like to see if we're actually committed let's make this happen now this is okay and while i don't disagree with the need to move this forward pv um i do want to ask um annette and and possibly other members on the leadership team if they change the pdq i know for us at des we have to take it all the way up to 808 for pdq approval um okay so you don't have to do that then then i would agree with pv we could make those changes but i i think what we need to decide is um are you looking for an as needed position because i think that's going to be challenging to find i i if you can't offer somebody at least a part-time hour or more with the potential of it growing into something larger i think we're going to be in the same place at in the july board meeting and the board meeting after that because um that as needed type of position for a specialty group like asdb i think is going to be very challenging to find the right fit and so i think you need to in in my humble opinion i would support a amendment to pv's motion thank you for that word um to include some parameters of it being at least a 20 hour a week position with the potential of growing to something more if other duties were found to be able to be added into that role i i think it will be far easier to recruit and find somebody that will have a commitment to the agency if it's at least those 20 hours a week this is superintendent reichman first i would recommend that if you want more hours on a weekly basis that either we do a 19 hour a week position with no benefits not do 20 hours a week because that would be required to include benefits and it's very expensive for the agency to provide benefits to a part-time staff so i would suggest either 19.5 hours a week with no benefits or a full-time 40-hour week position with benefits and and this is 2k i i could support either of those decisions if you felt like you had enough that you could expand the role to a 40 hour um great but um otherwise i'd i would could support a 19 hour with no benefits but i i don't think it could be less than that at this point if we want to get somebody who's going to be as committed to us as we want them to be this is superintendent reichman my challenge is that i am telling the leadership team that we have to become more responsible for our staff and sometimes we're overstaffed sometimes we're understaffed and we are doing a staff analysis currently trying to determine how to right-size our number of staff to meet the needs so based on what we need and what we have within the agency so i have already asked the leadership team to make some changes and so now you're asking me to add a full-time position and figure out what kind of work to provide that individual i can do that but that means i am taking a different approach than what i have asked my leadership team to take and um superintendent reichman i uh i certainly agree that this role isn't really envisioned to be even a part-time position we already have very high administration costs as we've discussed several times and i just don't think it's it's warranted for this position to be a full-time uh position or likely even a part-time based on the volume that we saw with the prior umbuds person uh you know the and just a little bit of history as you everyone will recall in july actually last spring we did an rfp process uh to find a vendor to be an unboxed person we got one reply the board in july voted to proceed with that person that person never entered into the the contract that they said that they would um so we were left without you know without anyone um so the idea here is that we're going to try to continue our efforts to to find someone in some capacity uh to do this work i understand that it's harder to get someone on a less than part-time basis but you know this is the idea of having a vendor is that it would be a little bit easier to do that because you know because with the contractor you can just give a few hours a month or none depending on the on the volume but that that didn't work out a year ago this is pv points i'd like to make one is my motion hasn't been seconded so it is open for um amendments or discussion of course and my second point um is superintendent reichman you did make a good point regarding your leadership team um and what would you propose instead this is superintendent reichman i would say part-time up to 19 hours a week with no benefits um with some flexibility in their schedule in their hours when they actually work and we would provide a phone we would provide an email address a laptop and we would pay for travel as needed meals etcetera for state policy and other supports that we offer to our other staff and an office space as well this is pv do you envision that position being remote or required to be in person this is superintendent rightman it could be both based on the need um because we are a statewide agency i could i would say both um i think that person would serve in both roles they would have in-person meetings and also remote meetings this is pv at 19 hours with no benefits do you think you would be able to recruit and find someone um compared to our previous situation when we did not have success getting that person to sign a contract so superintendent raymond that previous person was contracted not staff so with a contract position we did not get any interest what we're talking about now is a part-time staff position an actual member of our staff an asdb employee previously the ombuds person wasn't an employee not a contractor um that previous person was on our payroll so i would propose that this be an an employee on our payroll who is reporting directly to me and i would approve their time um and their schedule this is pv so to clarify does that mean you think you can successfully recruit someone um as a part-time employee for the position superintendent reichman said yes i think so okay there um so pv can you for can you restate your motion oh gosh i would actually like to modify the motion if that's okay that's fine okay so i would like to make a motion that the board gives superintendent richmond the authority to begin the recruiting process for selecting a part-time up to 19-hour a week ombuds person position and make a selection this is okay i second that okay any discussion on that before we vote this is pv i apologize i forgot one detail that i would like to amend the motion i would like to amend the motion to say that that position would report directly to superintendent reichman okay did i say that already oh i said that already okay i second that with the amendment okay any discussion before we vote okay uh all in favor uh say aye any opposed all right the motion passes thank you um next is 7.03 discussion possible action item mechanism for receiving public comments uh so this is an item i just wanted to take some more discussion on this um you know in the last couple of years well pre-march 2020 uh we'd have board meetings they'd be open to the physically open to the public they'd be broadcast too on the internet um and people would come and if they wanted to make collaborative comments they filled out a form there were two calls to the public they'd fill out a form for which one they want to do or both they'd come and they'd stand up and they'd give uh three minutes they'd have you should be a lot of three minutes of time uh we did that for you know many years the uh covet happened we went to zoom for a little while we use the email format that's had several modifications over time as we've kind of refined the process a bit we still did that today last meeting because the meeting has been closed to the to physically close to the public um in starting in july i it seems that we're going to be opening you know back up to the public so it'll be that the meetings will be completely uh as they were uh prior to march 2020 i think the the opening to the public physically is the last you know vestige of you know kova that we're we're getting rid of uh so we you know i just wanted to take some discussion as to what uh the board thought should we go back to our previous uh mech or previous practice which is if you would like to make a public comment you come to the meeting you fill out your form and then you come to the podium at the at the designated time uh we could uh not do that at all and and retain our email in uh policy uh like we have now where everything gets made of record on the website and we briefly summarize them uh you know for the meeting i think that you know that kind of shortens the meeting it allows us to get more time to talk together because this you know these meetings are the only time that we get to come together and and talk about these issues uh or we could do something else entirely um but i wanted to you know in terms of the public comment you know usually that's just something that i have the ability to change but i uh the policy gave me a discretion to do that but i want to get everyone's thoughts on that before we you know we make a decision this is uk i'm thinking a hybrid [Laughter] i think if we could take email comments and um provide a summary like we've been doing the last couple of meetings um including um the name of the person submitting the comments because i do think we need to be cognizant of not taking anonymous comments comments i think we need to follow that a little bit more strictly and then maybe a lot an amount of time for public comments in each of those areas take them in and anything that we do not that we run out of time for after the three minutes each say we cap it at five people per section something to that effect that the rest of them would then also be put onto the board web page for people to then go back and read and we could even tally and say we have 10 comments related to agenda item you know 7.2 on this topic um and the first three people that submitted their comments are going to be allowed three minutes a piece and the rest of the comments will be placed on the website that's my thought okay so what you're suggesting is the people that show up physically we'd set a limit of let's say the first five um and then if there's other if there's overflow uh we would take a video of them and post those comments okay and they would do that offline or or we wouldn't do that at the meeting where we do it at the meeting but correct but not um you know not during the meeting set meeting time correct okay uh any other thoughts this is brittany buchanan i just want to clarify sue kay um if you if we're doing a hybrid which i am fully supportive especially since you know we don't know it's at this point anything could go um if you have like five email comments and five people in person showing up to comment on the same like agendaized item um and you want us a time limit or a person minute how are we going to differentiate or give you know kind of an equal opportunity to people that choose not to come in person and people that do choose to come in person this is this is uk in in this is my very humble opinion i think that the priority should be given to the people who attend in person as far as time in front of the board because they have made the effort to be here again this is my very humble opinion and those that provide an email comment i don't think that it should be ignored or you know lower in priority but i do think we should give the actual time that we have on the agenda to the people that actually showed up and then just again like we have been doing summarizing the email comments and then making sure that they're posted i appreciate your opinion on that thank you this is pv i agree with the hybrid approach i think it's important to offer the opportunity for in-person or an electronic option um or people can record a video and post and share that if they would like my only concern is with limiting the number of people part of our job as the board is to be open to the public and open to their comments and their input if we limit the number of people who are allowed to comment um that could create the potential sense of unfairness or um selective or favoritism as it were so which is not our intention of course so a big challenge that we face as a board and as an agency statewide is that arizona is a very diverse state and it's not just regarding gender culture race ethnicity etc but it's also geography and access so perhaps we can do a trial for the next board meeting and see how that hybrid approach works and then if it's too much if it's taking too long there are too many people we can modify that as needed but i just don't want to create the sense that we are limiting our public comment where other boards generally don't do that we do limit the time that they're allowed just to comment if they show up in person but they still have the opportunity to be heard this is uk um and i i'm hearing you very loud and clear pv um one of the things that i have chatted with annette about in some previous interactions is that we might want to put some of the the thoughts for these unagendized comments and maybe provide a couple of opportunities a year for more of a town hall kind of a session for people to have the opportunity to interact with annette and or members of the board regarding things that are of concern to them that might not be on the agenda and maybe that would help sort of level that playing field mrs pv i like that idea i do think it's important perhaps that we create a town hall meeting that is open to the public i think i think that would be an important step and a good way to address that concern i think for those non-agendized items those comments could still be collected or potentially with the ombuds person if it's something that looks like a complaint we could follow up and say if this is in fact a complaint bring this to the ombuds person the ombuds person can take it from there another option is to you know make sure that we are prioritizing comments on agendized items and once those are done if we have time um at the end of the meeting then we can open it for non-agendized item commons perhaps are there other other comments on that i mean mike was that no okay um you know for me uh having been you know to the the pre-co meetings for for quite a number of years um you know we typically didn't we didn't never limited the number of people who can speak but that never really became an issue we very rarely on one occasion that i recall that we have more than six or seven people speak uh at you know at three minutes a a person um and then you're at you know if there's seven people or there are five people it's about 15 minutes and people have to get up and down um you know one of the things i i want to make sure that we're doing is we're we're hearing everyone and we can hear everyone a number of ways one we have an email address right so people can always email us anytime two if they want to make their comment public and put it in you know public record they can send that to the email and that'll go on the website uh and that i think is you know a good thing we didn't have that before we didn't even have that before a few meetings ago uh so that's that's certainly a good thing in terms of you know limiting the time if we were to say you know the first seven people and again the first come first serve basis it wouldn't you know we're completely viewpoint neutral in that regard uh and we limit that number of times so even with seven people we're we're checking out about an hour to the meeting um you know for for me i want to be cognizant of that because we want to be able to to have as much of the meaning as we can to have discussion about things that are important to the agency it's important to hear public comment um but it doesn't necessarily have to be during the meeting to extend the meeting an hour or more so even if we were to limit it to seven people let's say the first seven people on each of those so it'd be 14 total about an hour total of comments at the most i don't know that we would really on a regular basis ever hit that again there was one exceptional circumstance where there were many more comments uh in person uh and and i i really hope that doesn't happen again um but again it was it was a it was an exception you know rather than a rule this is pv i do get what you're saying president nigro and i agree the reason i'm suggesting perhaps a trial or a town hall format excuse me i'm suggesting perhaps a town hall format has that been done by the board before there was one town hall for a very specific purpose several years ago and but again it was a very it was a very specific purpose and uh there was a fair number of attendance i think uh you know from the members of the public and community uh but we haven't done it on a on a regular basis the only thing i think we've done that is anything even close to that is the interviews for superintendent when we did that um over six seven years ago when we were doing the superintendent search we held town halls in phoenix and in tucson uh where the the superintendent candidates uh spoke and then took questions from the audience so again we did that that's been a number of years ago at this point and we had the one town hall about three years ago i think on a very specific issue um this is sukay i i know that annette has met with stakeholders in the community in that sort of smaller format and i am just suggesting that maybe the board be open to participating in some of those stakeholder meetings whether it's the full board or a representation of the board that then could bring back some of those concerns and comments to maybe be added to an agenda for a board meeting i think it would allow people's voices to be heard especially with some of the non-agenda items that maybe we could collect more information and then like pv said again if it's something that we're suspecting is a complaint is that something that the ombudsman role could vet out um prior to bringing it to the board's attention um i don't know just sort of spitballing some ideas here that's a great point suitcase superintendent rickman does do more than and has done more of the town hall type events and i think it would be good if the board you know could participate in those in in the future uh we'd have to give proper notice if more than a certain number of board members attended uh but that's that's not a problem we just need to know in advance this is tv and also when okay i'll yield to linda this is linda i do support that idea of having a town hall on occasion i think we have talked about that before but allowing the public to share their opinion allowing the board to take that in um and and giving us time to think through how we can make supportive decisions how we can be supportive of the superintendent get a pulse on the community i think that's very important for me as a deaf person on the board i do feel like i need to to hear from the community more because covet has created this barrier we haven't had the opportunity to really interact with public who are concerned about our board's decisions so i like to have those people in in front of us and create a friendly accessible environment to the board so so yeah i support that idea i would think maybe twice a year would be would be great and yeah so just to support what everyone has said so far uh thank you all right if there are no this is pvp sorry president nigro i just wanted to say that i am more than happy to participate in superintendent reichman's uh stakeholder meetings um if that would be beneficial to the board i love that kind of thing so i'm happy to be involved oh thank you no that that would be great um superintendent recommend you can make sure the board knows about those upcoming events and the only thing i'd ask is you'd have the board rsvp um at least a week in advance so that if more than five want to go that we properly notice it yes i will do that thank you okay um if there are no other comments we can move on to 8.01 call the public call the public for non-agendized items that's okay we had three emails on a similar topic from alexis sloan samantha moore and leslie jen decker all three indicated support for hiring vacancies and campus leadership with those who are asl proficient and or who have background in deaf and hard of hearing education and then an additional comment from one was in regards to considering looking at not utilizing academic time for speech training and speech therapy um but to have that be um as an outsider extracurricular activity thank you uh next on the agenda 8.02 discussion of possible action item agendas agenda items for the next regular board meeting scheduled on july 7 2022 in tucson and possible future work sessions um i can just start by saying we a significant uh agenda item on that meeting is going to be our review of the first year of the strategic plan so we um may of 2021 was the meeting where we approved our strategic plan so it's uh it's almost a one year anniversary of that um where it is to the month so that means that we've had one year to collect all of our data and to put it into a format that the board can review it and discuss it i know we've seen some kind of beta versions of a an online tool uh dashboard to see it that will be open to the public i don't know if that's gonna be ready for july i hope that it is i really would like for it to be ready for july but if not you know a pdf report would be sufficient but the important thing is that all the data in the strategic plan is compiled and put into a report for us to review and then we can talk about what what this means um what are we seeing that we like what are we seeing where there might be opportunities for improvement um or or changes uh i think it's going to be good to see that first full year so that we can start to plan for the next year um and and and see what we're gonna do to either you know keep going with successes that we've had or or or make some changes to um to see if we can uh move some of that data for for the next year so that i think is going to be a significant part of that meeting are there any other ideas for other action i or other agenda items for the next meeting this is superintendent reichman i also want to propose that the board consider and further work study session perhaps focused on the master facilities plan and that process [Music] the recent work study session um assistant superintendent cooper did talk about that a little bit but we know that our sunset audit will include a focus on that topic and so we would like to have the opportunity to have a deeper discussion with the board in in the future perhaps in the summer or fall to have you start considering what this means and how that would fit in with our strategic plan and superintendent right when i completely agree and our facilities are i mean they've been an area of focus for us for a while and i think even more attention needs to be brought to that now i don't know when that report is going to be done i know that it has to be done by october i don't know when we're going to get any kind of initial draft or maybe it'll be done before that i'm not sure um we probably want to wait we would probably want to schedule that for after after october my hero i hurt myself a little bit for after october so that we have an idea of what the audit says i wouldn't want to have that work study session before we we know what the auditors think um so that would be my my suggestions that we although it is an important issue that i'd love to have that meeting you know in the summer if we could uh i just think it doesn't make sense to do it and get some sort of a direction on it before we know what the auditor is going to say this is pv and i do understand that perspective president nigro i'm i sort of agree um at the same time i do feel that um this is a going to be a very complex issue um that we are going to be facing and with significant challenge and so we're going to need to look at this almost like the elephant in the room trying to figure out how we can eat the elephant one bite at a time so it's going to take a while which means that um we may need to start at least start the conversation prior to the results of the sunset audit and i think if we as a board and leadership team could perhaps develop some kind of an overall needs assessment or a prioritization of what we feel the agency needs and what we want to commit to that would help us that help guide us through that conversation after we get the results of the sunset audit and so i think that we are going to need to have some very tough conversations and i think starting that earlier than later would be a benefit to us as well as the community are there any other comments on that okay are there any other suggestions for other work study session topics a master facilities plan or at least getting a review of what all our assets are for the agency uh this is david we certainly need a strategic facilities plan um you know in particular we don't have that and i know that we need one um i i i still believe that that it would be better to wait for the result of the auditor's uh general report so that we know the what they think are the larger issues that we need to address uh you know that said there's you're right that there's nothing to stop us from from thinking about it now and that is and that topic isn't going to be fixed in one work study session it's going to it's going to take a while to resolve this is uk just personally from my perspective i i would like to have sort of a 30 000 foot view at this point because i know there is a lot involved in that and i know that i know just that much of it and so i think even if we could start with the larger picture overview before we you know roll up our sleeves and dig down into the details after the audit results that would be helpful for me as a board member yeah that i think we can do when you want to do that i i'm flexible if we need to do that in a work study session before october um we could we could have um letitia sent out a doodle poll for possible dates i'm i'm open i'm bad yeah i think that's maybe the bet but you're but you wouldn't want it in the summer you'd wanted sometime in the sometime sometime august or before yeah i would say um i would say maybe sometime around august would be good i i don't want to get it too close to what i know that school starts um like the third week of julyish so i i don't want to cram too much into leadership's team's plate that close to the beginning of the school year but if we could have it some somewhat close after that that might be a good way to start diving in okay this is pv um i would have to agree with that timeline particularly because you we have to remember they have to fill the assistant superintendent position conduct that search of course and they're also working on filling that principal position for the two both schools in the tucson campus and um also we're talking about the ombuds position as well so they've got a lot of responsibilities before um before we get to that point all right why don't we do that let you if you can do a doodle poll or dates that would work for you guys and then you can maybe give us three or four options there any other potential topics either for the next board meeting agenda items or uh work study sessions we can always revisit this in july we don't need to plan all of the next half of the year right now no okay and then we can move on to 9.01 adjournment this is lynn i move that we adjourn this board meeting a second this is linda all in favor aye aye aye aye any opposed all right yeah we have one opposed all right uh thank you everyone um thank you to our staff the interpreters uh the media production team um we will uh we'll see you at the next meeting you

how to submit if this is the choice that you are making i cannot encourage you enough to attend the parent information sessions that we have broken down in two grade bands grades k through five will be on may 19th from 6 pm to 7 30 and grade 6 through 12 will be on may 24th from 6 to 7 pm the links will be provided in a blackboard announcement if you have any questions after this evening please feel free to call me at 973-470-2 or email me at entouri cliftonschools.net this entire presentation will be posted to the website so you will have an opportunity to look at the links that we have in the presentation and if you have any questions please that's what i'm here for utilize that contact information and get in touch with me thank you very much for your time i truly appreciate it thank you that's right i just well i'm gonna actually sign out i'm gonna actually get right sign out okay questions from board members yes mr krabs so um equity equality who we are as individuals is important to teach our kids as they get older and understand what the world is about society's about but i think the biggest question i i have my own problems with legislators in terms of how they're spinning this and it's going to delve into some questions i have in terms of mandatory curriculum teachings and district choice style of structure and curriculum teachings so some legislators have been putting out there and i've been pretty vocal with them on my own terms i'll speak on behalf of the board because i personally relate to a lot of them and that many might now go from okay well this is what we're doing as doe and legislators in terms of down in trenton to now they're back peddling and saying these are options and it's upon the district's choice in terms of structure and curriculum how true is that i need i i just want the people to know so structure the standards have always have been a mandate since 1996 so districts are required to teach content according to certain standards at certain grade bands that they've evolved over the years but they those are just the standards or the goal of the lesson districts all along have been able to choose their own curricular materials write their own curriculum create their own lessons the state of new jersey has not ever promoted or mandated a specific curriculum they're actually prohibited from recommending specific texts to us so our local curricular committees work very hard on this and that's one of the reasons why you see so many names for summer work and after school curricular revisions because a very large portion of this work is done by our local teachers they still have to meet a standard that standard is also looked at under nj cusack but as long as we meet the points that are in there we really should be fine so then if i may just one more question president smith so which goes into my second fold of this question which is if the clifton school district is deciding to choose how they go about the structure of this curriculum correct so during these sessions that you're going to have these q and a's what's the chances and possibilities to you know for parents and stakeholders in this city to understand what truly the mindset of this curriculum is going to be whether it's a skeleton outline or whatever it may be what choice of words you're going to use i'm going to be honest i was taking down looking notes you know to see down at end of grade 2 if my child is in grade 2 and i really want to teach them about the birds and bees i want them i want them to learn from home what is what in terminology and absolutely you will be teaching your child about the birds and the bees because we are not teaching them about the birds and the bees in grade two well when you simply four words that are part of their body and it could be as simple as head shoulders knees toes penis or vagina i see i disagree i absolutely disagree because those words that that and i'm not gonna repeat them because i'm affordable member here and the kids are probably watching and again goes listen people may disagree with me but as a parent every parent has a right to teach what they want to their kids and we're offering we are offering an opt-out so if that's if that's a lesson that you do not want your child to be a part of you may opt out of that lesson it's literally going to be family life in elementary school meets one day per week per grade and it's half a year there are it's a total of 20 lessons and if that if that's a two-second part of what your body parts are if that's a two-second part of one lesson that's going to be a lot and there are a myriad of other topics that they still need to cover it's one tiny spoke and a very big wheel of what's covered in elementary school they do recycling they do community what what it means to be a community member what your future career may want to be there are so many other facets to what they learned grades k through five that if this one lesson you would like to be opted out of that's not a problem and and on the website currently right now if you look on the phys ed website i have listed every single resource there those have always been as long as i've been sitting in the chair i'm sitting in those have always been listed there for parents to look at the resource on the website i've never hidden that from anybody i'm gonna say is i have a lot of emotions about this and to be honest i'm just gonna hold keep to myself for now and give my other colleagues the opportunity to speak [Music] okay any other questions from board members yeah i just want to piggyback what my colleague said i just got so much emotions running through me and honestly it was i just feel very uncomfortable that a second grader personally um you know i come from a conservative background and i know that's just my belief but i feel like with today's society and with the way things are just happening so fast everything to be honest with you everything's so sexualized nowadays when it comes to music to just just on a day-to-day basis and i i feel like you know it starts off with just teaching you know a second grader about excuse my language penis and vaginas and then in a couple of years later they're going to add something else to something else and personally we keep telling parents you know talk to your kids you know a a mother a father you know it doesn't matter who the parent is we're telling these parents you know teach your kids to guide your kids but at the same time it's i know they're not forced and they have the choice to opt out or not but you know looking around our city it's just i feel from what i've heard from many people a lot of people are kind of literally mind blown like is honestly i can't put my words together tonight because i'm just i just feel very uncomfortable honestly uh so i'm just gonna keep it at that i'm just scratching my head right now um i'll probably discuss this once i could kind of think straight but i'm totally against this i'm sorry it's just i don't i'm just going to speak for my conscience and i know i'm going to get a lot of backlash but you know what i'm in this position to speak how i feel and wow that's all i've got to say any other questions from board members yes mr president um my question is around that the academic freedom so we saw some of these videos here is this going to be the specific content that's going to be used you know and and wording that you were choosing to use instead of here is it this this the specific guidelines and sort of the holy bible that they're following or are they allowed to go off track and and speak ad-lib and speak really to how they want to teach these these our teachers do have the freedom to teach at the same time our teachers are required to follow our local curriculum the entire physical education department is working together on developing these lessons the majority of these lessons have already been taught and implemented in clifton public schools for well over a decade these stan the sex education standards in fifth grade have been there since 1996 and it predates that because i remember that conversation in the 80s so these are lessons that have been oh that have always been there this is this is not hijacking a curriculum this is a sliver of a full comprehensive health and physical education program we're talking about in fifth grade one maybe two lessons in we tried we the reason we shared those videos with you is we're not going with these amaze.org videos we're going with videos that we as a district feel are more developmentally appropriate that's why we showed you those examples so that our parents can see the direction that we're going with this and the lessons that we're looking at and i understand that i'm not talking about historical i'm just talking about in general so what you presented tonight a teacher can look at that and have their own interpretation and present something to the students that's not what we saw tonight our teachers are all being trained and they're developing the curriculum together especially at the elementary our teachers do tend to follow the pacing very closely pretty much across all of our elementary contents and classrooms i would find it highly unlikely that there would be any major divergence at the elementary school you do have more independence from that perspective at the high school but even at the high school level especially you know the court the new nj cusack and the standards do guide us in certain directions we can then develop our own lessons and curriculum and our teachers do need to be following the curriculum that we present could a video change could a resource change sure can a conversation go a different way in a high school because of student questions at the high school level or at the middle school level yes that is possible okay any other board members vice president daley um yeah first of all thank you very much for the presentation um i'm still a bit concerned my concern i listened to when when i was in high school we had sex education and everything else but it was a little different and for a high schooler than in elementary school and i can understand how parents are apprehensive especially in the elementary i mean you've told us that this has been part of the standards for quite some time however at this for some reason um i don't know if it's pr people are spinning things um that it's this has been in there for a while for quite some time but obviously it's front and center now and i think much more people are aware the one issue i'm and i i think the parents have a right to a definite right to feel what they especially in the elementary school of how this is approached uh and if a parent feels uncomfortable my my one thing about the opt-out is i'm not sure how the parents are aware what's there and if they say oh i miss my opportunity to opt out i don't know if there's more appropriate that there's an opt-in especially in the elementary school level and i can understand a lot of parents concerns and how to do that now every every parent isn't the same how they bring their child along and help them they mature this is all personal amongst the family and everybody has their own way of doing that um but i'm just a little bit more concerned especially in the elementary school that a parent may not be aware of the opt-out issue or when the curriculum is being taught and they've all of a sudden the parents aware that something's happened or the child's been taught and is upset about that so that that notice information is a concern of mine so to address the beginning part of your question or statement the k to two pieces are that the k to two pieces are a little different from what they were before at the same time the district is choosing to go in a direction that is i think more aligned with age and developmentally appropriate markers we i hope that we were able to share show that with the videos that we chose as examples of the type of lesson that would be taught in terms of the opt-out and communication with parents elementary parents do tend to be much more involved than our high school parents and and even sometimes middle school each of our teachers each of the health and phys ed teachers has their own google classroom the opt-out information and the lessons being taught will be posted in that google classroom at the elementary level it's only 20 lessons total per year per grade and these topics in the k-2 span might be one or two lessons total out of k to two overall and in grade five it'll be one or i'm sorry in in kindergarten caded two it's going to be one lesson and in case um three to five at the end of fifth grade there will be one or two lessons this will be clearly posted in the google classroom the opt out will be available already in august but prior to those lessons being taught we will make sure that all of our teachers send a blast out through our real-time notification system and through that this lesson will be being taught so that we can make sure that our parents are aware of this option just just one quick follow-up as the state definitely said the only way you can is an opt-out and not an opt-in especially for the elementary what's what's the state well according to njpsa the state doesn't even want an opt out and we're providing one so there's that no i understand that thank you for that mr president i might have some more comments down the line but uh as far as the uh uh roy and and and and mr kuslevich i thank them for that yeah ms gutierrez can uh answer a part of your question there mr dilly there's a well for everybody there's a state statute that provides the ability to opt out of certain curriculum um and of course i can't find the number right this second but i will before the end of the night we actually have it in our opt-out letter which unfortunately i don't have with me but it is specific to um concern religious concerns exactly morally sincere religious belief or conscience i'll find it but it's opting out not opting in and it is clearly inaudible and it's clearly in our opt-out letter that entire statute is actually cited in the letter that we're still developing that will be posted okay anyone else miss password yeah i have a couple of questions these two sessions that are going to happen through you um mr president the superintendent to the staff um i don't know why i have such a quebec um they're going to be an hour and a half like is it going to be the same type of demonstration or are you going to actually show an actual lesson being uh happening because i would i'm going to try to make one of these nights it's going to be the same thing on both nights right this way we're going to or is it going to be two different subjects it will be band appropriate so okay through five will be the first night six through twelve will be the second and it's a it's a question and answer night for parents to attend as well i i was able to ask questions that evening personally i think that i would like to make a request for the hsa committee that we um repeat this presentation to the hsa parents so we can get their uh input in on it and also i'd like to see an actual lesson and i it's gonna be people may take this the wrong way i would like to see the more offensive lessons or that people are having problems being taught because i have to tell you as a parent age-appropriate terminology was taught from the very beginning of my children's lives i was taught that by my sister who was nine years old and then 47 years a nurse to talk about the appropriate body type so there is no misconception in the child's development that was number one as you can see i think i did a pretty good job keep raising my children because of course you know nicknames were were afforded but i would like to see the tougher lesson as a board member i would really like to see if we could see that so i can be more familiar and then answer questions when people stop me at the store but i will i would feel comfortable knowing how it was going to be delivered so at these two sessions these are more focused on the changes to the standards themselves we were planning further sessions in um in august once our teachers pull everything together now mind you like i said the majority of this is already being taught um so we can give a sample of that matches some of these prior to um maybe we can do that at this hsa meeting that is being requested if that is something that um dr robert tozie would like to organize with you um so how we're currently teaching um some of these lessons can definitely be shared um i think the thing we were really trying to highlight was seriously the video that the two videos that we we selected to show the three that we showed are really along the lines of the majority of what that lesson would look like because my concern is that there there is the misconception out there that these sessions are going to be dedicated to these things in length like you said they're going to be taught very quickly so i would feel more comfortable seeing a a an example of of a lesson on one of the the more intense subject matter so i can myself make the judgment because we have to vote on this curriculum come july i believe it is am i wrong don't we vote on the curriculum in the summer uh we re-adopt we typically at the in may we re-adopt all of our curriculum guides and we're going to hold off our um comprehensive health and phys ed guide until august okay so i would like if we could get some sample i'm trying not to put pressure on anybody or put more work but i think there there is a lot of misconception and for ordering me to make an informed decision when i have to vote on this that i would like to see it and i don't know if it could be a public meeting but i think that we should open it to the public as well but i really want to get the hsa parents involved in this as well because it's going to affect their children and some of some of the people that have been very outspoken no longer parents and they have grandchildren i understand that but i just want to give everybody more of an opportunity to actually see the content of what they're going to see like you go preview a movie right and you try to find out or you're going to go see a broadway show i'm not trying to discredit this in any way but i would i want to see it actually before i vote on it i can't i can't do it otherwise and since some of these are truly just vocabulary changes um some of these lessons are still are already going on because this has been in the current content standards um we can see if we can find a snippet or maybe you know record a teacher teaching if they're willing to be recorded or just get their written lesson plan president smith yes did you uh miss gutierrez could you give us the uh statute please thank you new jersey statutes annotated 18a colon 35-4.7 reads exclusion of pupils from programs statement of parent any child whose parent or guardian presents to the school principal a signed statement that any part of the instructions in health family life education or sex education is in conflict with his conscience or sincerely held moral or religious beliefs shall be excused from that portion of the course where such instruction is being given and no penalties as to credit or graduation shall result there from so i'm not sure how you're going to do the actual opt-out but it's really it's actually in the statement that went out to every parent on monday letter that went out so that it stated very clearly that there will be alternative lessons that will be mutually agreed upon and the child will be put in an alternative location excellent and that statute has been around since 1979.

president smith okay and let's just give everyone a chance does anyone else wish to question this yes i had a couple questions oh thank you um was the um the notification sent down multiple languages yes it was okay so i'm gonna confirm that um my other i also agree with uh mr daily that i think it should be an opt in i remember being an opt-in when i was growing up i don't know why i remember that but i remember it a forum going i went to catholic school fifth grade so maybe it was different but there was a form that went home and then you had to return it back signed in order to go to the lesson and i remember the parents being there and again that's catholic school so that's a totally different situation but maybe having that as an option of having the parents the ability to be in the classroom or you know it was done not during classroom time i remember it was done like either after school or during a lunch it was like done separately so that the parents could be there also um just so that you know everyone kind of knows what's going on also i think previewing the lesson plan would be also um you know beneficial to the parents and also to us to be able to properly vote on it because there are terms here that are obviously were not discussed you know gender identity even when i was you know it's only 15 years ago i was 15 years old um those things weren't really discussed back then so i don't even know what would be presented on those types of subjects um so i think it would be beneficial for us to see the second grade the fifth grade you know sixth grade and beyond i feel is you know they're more on the internet they're more out there they you know they've seen it they you know it's they're gonna be more prepared to receive lessons like that even though you're never gonna get over the awkwardness of the words that have been um said here today unfortunately just the way our society is um but i think if we were able to see a lesson plan as well as the parents being able to see the actual lesson plans can be presented i i don't really like that the teachers may not go off rubric i you know i i would like them to have to present exactly something um and not be able to have even a little bit of leeway of what they could do just because i know from my experience of having friends their teachers some of them have very different views than others so you might get you know 10 different presentations and all those kids are going to wind up in the same middle school with 10 different versions of the same story so that's just my opinion on that anyone else that has not spoken yet okay um mr albert job thank you so i remember back in fifth grade where and this is also you know talking about what was already being taught and i've heard that phrase many of times tonight um and listen i'm not taking away from anything from your presentation i appreciate both you you're both very well good educators you care about our district but my concern is this right is that in fifth grade i remember a school one i was sitting there and yes they separate us in classrooms or male here female there and they would talk about gender parts and et cetera why are we going from separate to mix is my first question and then my second question is while yes this has been taught let's say in fifth grade but now we're bringing it down a notch to second grade and i think that's like the biggest concern i don't remember learning this in second grade not in third grade and not in fourth grade i think my first introduction was in fifth grade and it's a very sensitive topic and it's a very sensitive issues and i get it and i understand it right but the big it's going to go back to the original question which why are we going to a mixed class rather than keeping it separate the way it's just the way it is we're still we're still teaching what's what where's what right in that aspect um nicole can you just share with us how long we've been teaching the in the mixed class i'm older than you and i don't ever remember being separated it was the school nurse that actually taught the lesson because we did not have health specific educators in elementary school it was the nurse that came in and i don't remember being removed and i graduated high school in 1991.

so i know i know i'm older than you and i don't remember being separated and if they did that in the school you were in again i can't speak to that i went to school 11 christopher columbus and clifton high school i was never separated so i don't know if they did that in your school maybe that's a decision i can't speak to that because i was i i was in school myself at that time so if that's a decision that the school nurse made at that time in your school but i i was never where i was separated so then let me play devil's advocate with the opt-out so first saying people are going to opt out i'm assuming by that notion we're going at a low percentage 20 maybe opt out what do we do with those kids a right b what if it's the other way around where 80 actually opt out how do we how do we work with that that's b and then c can we see what the uh what the opt out questionnaire or how it's worded or what topic issues parents would want to opt out what that looks like so all of this is still being developed we are drafting the letter once we draft the letter we share it with dr robert tosi we can't finalize every indiv every single piece of the exact list of lessons until we finish with the curriculum however the majority of what exists is going to be in there we can share samples as has been requested we will obviously be bringing this up again now hopefully with the hsa presidents um and then with some sample lessons that we can share with the board as well as the sample um of what the uh the draft of what the opt-out letter is going to look like we've had an opt-out letter in the past it was how frequently do you think it's used the opt-out letter that we had in the past maybe in all total we've had about ten that have come back over the last eight years that i've been in this position ten letters that have probably come back asking for a child to be opted out of a singular lesson on the old opt-out letter there was listed topics that were covered and parents could circle yes no yes no yes no whatever they wanted and they would return it parents were also at that time if they chose all yes we kept all those they could they were in the school with the family life teacher and if a child a parent opted a child out they would go to either the media center or to maybe sit with the counselor at the school counselor's office and given an alternative assignment from the lesson let's say previous so that they had knowledge of what the previous lesson is so let's say in kindergarten it was sharing and and they didn't want their child in the next lesson they would be given a lesson on sharing because they already had previous build knowledge and now that we have our chromebooks they can be referring back to an activity that would be that could be posted in the chromebook and we can have um alternative lessons available um based on those prior lessons so that we don't even have to go scrounging for a lesson this is a piece that our teachers can do this summer um in preparation for opt out of certain topics yes thank you um i don't think it needs to be said that everybody here understands this and i first of all i want to commend my team for an outstanding presentation i feel like they're having to defend the state of new jersey and that's not their job what they're what they're doing um what they're doing is taking lemons and making lemonade for lack of a better word so i trust like it's our teachers that are developing these lessons i trust our teachers are going to create lessons that you would be very comfortable having your own children in their classroom and i don't mind sharing that i don't mind having one of our teachers come in and do a lesson with us actually some of us could use some lessons like sharing and caring and right i'm joking so no we can do that we can absolutely do that but i want you to i want you to just i want you to i think we've earned some trust here um and i think that you you trust our teachers to come up with lessons janine mentioned earlier a lot of our teachers are parents right even the ones that aren't treat the children in clifton as if they were their own children and they're not going to do anything that they think is going to harm them and yeah we can all see how some of these standards may be yeah it looks it looks really at first glance to be could be very controversial we're going to minimize the chance that there's any controversy in the classroom and then at the end of the day if a parent still isn't sure we're going to allow you know we're required to allow but we're going to make that an easy process that's not going to be i'm not going to make that difficult for a parent so so thank you guys for a great presentation um and all these questions here this is these are questions that the community has and and we respect that we respect that and hopefully we're able to answer some of them and we'll answer more in the future i'm sure there'll be some public comments and we're happy to hear that um and we'll adjust if necessary so thank you guys thank you thank you know i think uh dr robertosi hit uh you know hit it right on the uh the head is our legislators are elected to work for the people so [Music] we are not supposed to have legislators and i'm not pinpointing any particular legislator but legislators in general that are not involved in this everyday uh aspect of teaching many of the uh people that sit on the state board no defense miss gutierrez but many of them are lawyers a lot of them do not have education background many of them have not ever been in a classroom so i think it's a very strong point that the legislators should be listening to us the people you that know what goes on in your children's lives this board who has to make decisions for all of the schools the legislators need to know that they cannot just sit back and make these rules and guidelines and we're supposed to just accept them they have to understand that we have concerns we have questions and they have to listen to them and i know there are it has nothing to do with um our wonderful teachers that if asked to do a job they do that job wholeheartedly that's their profession but they shouldn't have to be put into that position just because a legislator feels that they're making the decision for you and for uh our local clifton board of education so i think that is going to be a continual a conversation that we need to have with our legislators i know it is on the agenda for the next legislative meeting and i think if we stand firm with that we know what our teachers can do we know our teachers do a great job but someone else shouldn't be making those decisions and tying their hands whether whichever way your opinion is they should not be making that for our kids and for our town so i i applaud you all for your um your concern in this matter and um i think and hope that you have direction uh mr abu jabba for the legislative meeting for questions and concerns you might have and we'll ask the public to please email the board of any topics or questions that you wish to have us bring up with the legislators and we will uh we will do that so um when when does that mean i was gonna ask you if i can say so we're having a legislative meeting with our uh um some giblin senator nia gill and someone with timberlake on may 24th at 10 a.m um that is going to be a committee meeting please feel free to email the board president and the superintendent any questions you may have so we can put that on the agenda um at the end we gotta hold our feet to the fire we hold the state to defeat the fire and they can't keep trickling down saying it's the district's choice and and putting on on our educators so if you have any questions please feel free to email us and we will be sure to put on the agenda and and board members as well please get your uh questions uh to uh mr abu dravo uh to bring up at this meeting um this is this is important as many issues are but if we don't let them know how we feel and what our cares and concerns are it'll just be another procedure for them and we can't let that happen so please get your questions and your comments into us and we will sure to address those um at this meeting so thank you all and thank you to uh miss kusalevich and ms torre for uh uh a very difficult subject but trying to bring us all with the um the uh the proper information and make your your own judgment from that so we we truly credit you for uh for the great job that you do in uh and as you have been doing for many years uh we we truly appreciate it and thank you for that okay the next part uh mr lucy i believe you're up sir just let the public know there will be a presentation on the budget and then there'll be a public portion uh to any questions that you have on the budget only so after the conclusion of the presentation any questions that you have on the budget only will take place after the presentation yeah there's not too many but first one thank you okay good evening president smith vice president daley commissioners members of the public public attending the meeting and everyone uh streaming the meeting on youtube i'm mike yuzi the district's business administrator quickly i would like to introduce dr robertosi superintendent of schools mr congero assistant superintendent of schools ms kusalewitz assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction and mr shahada our assistant business administrator this is the public hearing on the final budget tonight the board will have a resolution presented to them to approve the submission of the 2223 budget to the county office i always like to start this presentation with a quick snapshot of the
