um something we didn't discuss at length though was this idea of academic excellence last week we heard from our best and brightest right i was so disappointed to hear them speak last week because it just broke my heart that we're not honoring them appropriately so my question is for each one of you what does academic excellence mean to you and what are each of you a little bit more and what are each of you doing uh personally as a board member to raise the academic achievement of district 308 students um i'll go ahead and start the because i'm assuming that you're um you're bringing up the the policy shift when it comes to summa laude magna laude is that is that correct yeah which when that was um originally brought up on the committee that that you're you're referring to the teaching and learning committee um the we we had discussed thoroughly at what we were doing and the intentions of what um was supposed to be done with that policy shift and in the beginning um when we went to the latin system the concept or what was intended was never to take away tradition and so the intention was always to make sure that we honored the traditions we already had so we had the 10 dinner and we looked at the numbers we broke them down and we knew that there was no way to take all three of the latin systems or the the three latin categories sorry and have those kids attend our traditional dinner and so the idea was that if we stepped away from that dinner that there would be backlash we knew that back then when that was instituted and so the concept was or the idea that we came up with in that committee at the time was that that ten percent dinner would just become the summa laude dinner um honoring the tradition that we already had there was never any concept of taking away medallions or taking away a dinner because we knew exactly what that would lead to um to speak to what i've done personally i don't think that honoring [Music] students who are finishing summa laude or laude is a participation trophy because i think those students have worked very hard um i take i don't want to say offense but i take a little aside to that when someone says that's a participation trophy i disagree vehemently with that um and so i would say that being a part of that that is actually honoring those students now the fact that we didn't listen to the committee in the beginning when they came up with that concept i i can't i can't control that piece uh personally um but i think honoring in addition to students who have also worked hard in addition to our traditions and keeping those traditions in place is actually an expansion of honoring our students who have worked very hard and so uh personally that's what i have done um but not me personally alone i want to make that abundantly clear um but as a team and and with others other board members as well um and so that really is the whole picture what has happened you know with that um i i would i think that there are those who probably once we revisited the history would realize perhaps that maybe the whole picture should have probably been looked at yep that's what happened back in 2017 the extensive conversation was surrounding whether or not quality points were hindering our highest academically achieving students from actually doing anything other than burning out because we had no limit on the number of courses and because there was such competition for quality points it wasn't it wasn't doing them good once they ended up at the college or university or wherever they chose to go after high school um and so one of the things we had talked about was do colleges look at the valedictorian salutatorian class rank system um it had been put in with good intentions of let's figure out how to weight some classes more heavily than others for academic achievement um i think that there's nothing that we don't celebrate about academic achievement whether it be for students who are now passing a class that they didn't used to be able to pass two students who and i heard a group talking today they're having a final coming up and someone was very very concerned that their average would drop from a 96 to a 95 percent in an ap class and that to me was pretty exciting to see that there are students that are willing to take the most rigorous courses that we can offer our students and are trying to 100 them because they want to know the material and they want to achieve that that that is something that i don't think any parent could not support we all want to see our students achieving at wherever they're at for our highest achieving students um yeah i don't think that as i understood that the intention had been to expand the top ten percent dinner to include all summa laude graduates um and i wasn't participating in any of the conversations that that led to any of the changes um but for me it's very important to recognize these students i also really enjoyed at those dinners that um that they would also recognize their educator that was the most influential educator to them so that's that's what i've got all right so the first question is what's uh my definition of academic excellence and for me it's it's basically fulfill each individual child's potential and allow them to pursue happiness so that's pretty much my definition and what i do personally to try to help kids get there is that's kind of my mantra achievement this needs to improve achievement like every decision i make there has to be an element of achievement for whatever that kid said you know all the the first you know abilities everything in our district um it has to um further achievement for those kids so that's what i do personally i that's literally my focus i've only been on for a couple months though i'll take a crack at it okay um so i think their answers for personal excellence are fine i think we could do more i think the real question is why aren't they getting their medals and why aren't they allowed to sit up front i don't i mean that again that was not enough i don't think that was enough decision i wasn't on the board when that happened um but as far as could we celebrate more like personally i think it starts with common finals i think it starts with common curriculum i think we have buildings in the district that have pockets of greatness and i think that we need to all come together and kind of collectively talk about curriculum which we have you know tried to institute um i think at the high schools it's common finals i think you have things that are happening in us release that aren't happening in us we go and vice versa and i think again there's pockets of greatness that we could fix i also think we need to expand our non-college bound options because i had one that went to college i had one that was in the military um the other thing that we could do is we could and we've talked about this but we haven't really gone past the talking stage when we do the signing days for athletes we could also do the signing days for kids who are going to college and we've talked about it but we haven't really gone past talking about it so that's you know partly on me too one thing real quick though i just want to make sure that we are clarifying something the decision for medals and sitting up front was never part of that discussion when that policy was changed so that decision if it was made this school year it was made while this board was sitting up here it was not a change that was made when that policy was made that was never the decision so i just want to make sure we clarify that since i wasn't on the on the board when that decision was made i will address it um what do i believe or think that um academic achievement or success is relates to um my advocacy for all students and the reason that i am on the board and that's how my advocacy for success of all students shows up and the fact that if i as a board member um are advocating for a culture and a climate that um will bring success for all students that's kind of how i see it so addressing like disparities in achievement is really important looking at opportunity gaps and expectation gaps and closing those is how we get success for all students thanks thank you for your question but i'll go next so uh first what causes a student to excel academically is absolutely different for every student and so it's not a blanket approach but academic excellence for me um is really helping each student realize their potential not just academically but but not just academically but just holistically as a as a person and i believe that that's why all of us sit on this board because we understand students are not just their gpa and i'm sure again i can speak for everybody but every question decision action that we make is all through that same lens and so supporting and equipping teachers is very important to me um working to ensure that we have a culture conducive to that teaching for teaching and learning is very important reviewing the policies and procedures to make sure that all students have access and that is equitable is important and even to the point of personally mentoring and tutoring students um is is all equally important on why we do what we do to make sure that and even recognizing them because we understand all students or and i shouldn't say all students but again the motivation for each student for for what causes them to continue to achieve is different but we want to make sure that we're doing all that we can uh to continue to support them hi michelle i have the honor of sitting with on the policy committee with michelle thank you for your question i could probably take six hours to answer this because i'm pretty passionate about it um i want to talk about the medallion first of all i didn't even know it was [Music] um and so i i have so many thoughts on it i understand why we let go of the dinner because of the cost um and i think that there can be a great um uh you can still gather and get together and everything and and celebrate um when i was meeting with mrs simultan and dr sparlin last weekend i did um share my disappointment that we didn't involve our students in this decision um and see what their feedback would be and something another one of our board priorities is student voice and i feel like we didn't give them that opportunity and so i i certainly um let dr sparlin know and said please share that i was disappointed that our students didn't have that opportunity to say you know while our administration was saying well this pin is better or it's this or it's that that's from your perspective not from the students so i encourage and push us all the time to say what do our students feel and think um so i think that's incredibly important i do also realize that there is a line of demarcation of where the board ends and where the board starts and it's often um and i often cross that line as dr sparlin will tell you giving my opinion about what i think um i would like to see or so forth but i am only one voice um so i do i did get a um a better understanding from dr kincaid and from some fellow board members that were on the team at that time and i support the decision that they made i do hope that we can come to some sort of better solution um and let the students say what they would like to uh purchase and or um be carry with them as a memento for their academic achievement which is incredible something i never attain regarding academic excellence i'm an hr practitioner by trade and so my goal is always to put the human and human resources i truly believe that so much of our culture and climate stems from how we treat our staff and how we treat each other within the district safe and inclusive a school district is more than just our students it's about our staff as well and we have to continue to provide a culture that is safe and inclusive for our staff when they feel safe our students feel safe academic achievement will increase by nature and so i continue to be the advocate for is our staff safe are our students safe because until they are those relationships with their teachers with different staff members they will not excel so i will continue to be that advocate time and time again and push those questions and push how we are doing with um the people that are running the district and the students within our district and that includes our parents and our community members as well every voice has the right to be heard and i will continue to listen to every parent every community member and we may not always agree but we can again i just i'm sorry only because um i want to make sure that um the committee work that we did is um is honored because there's a lot there was a lot of there was a lot of work and thought that went behind it that policy um and i want to make sure we clarify the policy definitely does not say or cover anything about medallions that policy does not cover anything about the dinner in fact when we d when we did that work we were very adamant i want to make this clear we were very adamant about honoring the traditions that had existed which were the medallions and that dinner and so um that was though neither one was ever um taken away when that when that uh committee did that work in fact the opposite was the heart of the discussion the heart of the discussion was that if you take either one of those away we will find ourselves in here having people come in so i can tell you specifically is not in the policy it was never intended to be put in the policy and it was never intended to be taken away i cannot be more clear than that i do not blame a board any board for the fact that it is gone because it's probably not something that would be brought on any board's radar however i'm i'm going to be honest and and say forthright that those conversations were absolutely taken into account when the policy was changed and we were very adamant that you cannot change those traditions because if you do you will upset people and they will come in here and they will let you hear about it and so whoever changed or whatever changed at whatever level as dominic pointed out i've only been here for a short while um you know i i'm sure there were reasons or whatever or or perhaps just lost in translation due to the fact of what we've been doing for the last two years but i want to respect the work that was done by that committee years ago and those conversations were adamant to not change tradition and there's nothing in the policy that says to take medallions or a dinner away so i just want to make sure that's crystal clear thank you jared penny we as a board we we understand the difficulty of the work that we do and so we we are in full support of the work that has been done prior to us coming on the sport and we we very much appreciate it so um if if there are well let me just invite anyone oh go ahead dominic is there an update to the ceremony or anything along those lines if i recall yes the update the ceremony is the uh i met with the uh the high school principals and the uh students will lead the procession into the arena northern illinois university they will also sit in the front row just as they have in the uh past traditions so in past years when we had a top ten percent uh that was one group of kids the number of suma camelot is probably about the top 12 to 15 of the graduating senior class so uh and then we will also be recognizing the uh magna laude and the kamadi students but they will be in alpha order uh just as it has been in the past okay so i'm going to give each of our board members an opportunity to have any closing remarks and we'll keep it to like two minutes each if anyone has anything and then we can go and uh we will adjourn so anyone with any closing remarks that they would like i just want to thank everyone who came out to ask a question tonight and brought uh different situations to our attention oftentimes the board does not know what may or may not be going on um so it's very helpful to get perspective and um uh hear everyone's voice so thank you just just going to say thank you to um everyone who came out including our um administrators and and staff who came out tonight appreciate everybody um who came out and and definitely the voices from the community um as well obviously so thank you yeah you know yeah i'll just actually we were ready for any questions so i appreciate everybody coming so yeah thank you yeah thank you so much even for coming to our board meetings and sitting and waiting so patiently for your opportunity to make your presentations we have really tried our best to be cognizant of where you are placed on the agenda and so we will continue to do that and work to make sure that you're not sitting there all night waiting to make your presentation so we really appreciate it and thank you for all who came out tonight our our community members who addressed us we take these um comments and concerns very seriously we read all of the emails and we take all of that information into all the meetings that we have whether they're with dr starlin or um whether they are they come before uh of the comments that we make during our board meetings and um in our conversations that we have with with our with our community and so we we this the kind of information that you bring helps us to um to build relationships because we want to build trust at the end of the day so you know building um relationships uh builds trust and so that's that's that's our goal so if there are no more um comments from our board um can i have a motion to adjourn all in favor

the revisions to the cafeteria board policy are made by district food service recommended specifically by pam miranda so those were made in the handbook and then finally on page 43 the multi-tiered system of support or mtss the language in this portion of the document replaces the problem-solving team again this language was recommended by district mtss coordinator sarah nolan so that is the reason for the revision on page 43. for all the title ix stuff that's just language that obviously was given to us and we just had to add it to the to the handbook i presume correct it was a board policy that was approved that was mandatory it was actually just cut and pasted with the handball correct i mean i did type it up but i'm joking um minor changes are you guys good to move forward with minor changes sure okay uh minor changes first and foremost uh a lot of this is just removal of coveted language um which was in the last active handbook so uh for attendance on page seven uh what we would be removing um our students are expected to attend every class whether remote or in person the following structures for instruction will be used in person uh full-time remote medical exemption only again we are deleting that because that is coveted language um and next specific to attendance policies we would be deleting it is important to note that while students are remote learning they should follow teacher procedures to log into the class for instruction students are expect expected to attend all remote learning sessions provided by the teacher and if they are not in attendance they will be marked absent next on page eight unexcused absence um this one is quite simply uh we go through seven examples of unexcused absences we are removing the language for the fourth example which is cutting class the verbiage there is in person or remote we're removing that language next we have makeup work during absences this is located on page nine uh for makeup work during absences uh it reads students who are who are absent from school in person or remote we're removing the in person or remote and then later in that paragraph we have the same verbiage uh in parentheses in person or remote we're removing that as well you said page nine yes i know on the memorandum i have paid and then it just i will tell you sir that the most difficult part of this entire handbook was the table of contents so no it is fine i am i'm i'm full disclosure all the way um i did have my boss dr hogg review it beforehand he let me know that before i walked out the door late arrivals to school this is on page nine as well and i double checked that when a student arrives late to school he or she must report to the office the office will issue a tardy pass to admit him or her to class work missed may be made up if the teacher permits it permits it we are recommending we delete that language the school must allow students the opportunity opportunity to address work because of an absent and this is protocol that's already in place at prairie knowles and central middle school so we saw no reason to have that language in there um moving along to visitors which is pages nine and ten very bottom of page 9 and moving along to page 10.

he worked extremely hard to build his business scattered over five cities and two states customers drove miles to have one of these froggies hamburgers and a beer for 15 cents he did hamburgers better than any other competitor of that day that's a little bit of history now one summer i was home from college my mother and i decided to visit my uncle and my aunt in canyon city as i was sitting with my uncle in the small living room in the house that he built we began discussing his life experiences and my future when with when with uncle mike i felt tremendous pressure to answer his questions in such a way that he could and would be proud of me and i might even impress him i wanted to tell i wanted him to tell me that i was going to do going down the right path make the right decisions and that i was going to be successful he asked me what my college course of study was i proudly and confidently told him i was either going to major in mechanical engineering or mathematics i felt good about my answer i felt that my course of study would impress him and he would express his admiration or at least give me his approval however his response was nothing what i expected he offered neither admiration nor approval instead he said young man that's fine but that's not what's important let me tell you something he said in a stern non-apologetic way it doesn't matter what course of study you choose and in fact you said it doesn't even matter if you finish your studies what is most important is that whatever you choose to do in life you do it better than anyone else does it doesn't matter if you go into medicine construction law trash trash collection or the restaurant business whatever it is you must do it better than anyone else does it you can be and this is almost a direct quote from him you can be a ditch digger he said if you dig ditches better than anyone else digs dishes you will be successful this is not what i expected to hear from him but to this day it stands as the most accurate important and impactful piece of advice i've ever received i've tried to live my life as he advised and i've seen his wisdom play out over and over again in the lives of friends relatives co-workers and graduates uncle mike passed in 2003 at the age of 90 but our conversation that day years ago and the wisdom he shared has lived with me ever since i've shared his advice with my children if you ask them probably one too many times i've shared with them as i share it with you today two degrees a life of learning in 32 years and a career later and still the most important and impactful learning of my life i received sitting on the plastic covered sofa from my uncle mike in his living room so my advice to you today as you leave high school and enter college trade school military or the workforce comes from my uncle mike success is not determined by what you do it's determined by how how excuse me by how well you do it whatever it is you do do it better than anyone else and success will follow these words were true to him in the 19th and 20th century and will remain true through the 21st century i think they will last forever so with that i congratulate the class of and i wish you a hopeful fulfilling and successful future be well be safe and thank you all and congratulations once again thank you mr gregory at each graduation members of experience and i've gone above and beyond to make my days brighter i wanted to take some time and appreciate you and tell you why you made aspen valley feel more like a home mama joe you are one of the kindest souls i've ever met i bet everyone in this school would agree since my freshman year you've always been a bright smiling face every sorry every time i've gone to talk to you you make sure to tell me how proud you are of me and how beautiful you believe i am thank you for always being such a highlight of my days miss wasserman since freshman year art class it was one of my favorite classes you always made it a nice place to get away from any drama and you've honestly helped so many kids with the advice you've given them i also want to thank mystic for being such a good sweet boy he is the best thank you for being such a caring woman and creating a nice atmosphere wherever you are mr fisher you've always been like my at school dad with your dumb dad jokes and how you ran class and the advice you gave you truly made my days better thank you for truly caring about me and always listening to my rants hey fisher what's the best thing about switzerland i don't know but the flag is a big plus and finally miss bauman from the first day i had you my sophomore year you've always cared about me i will be forever thankful for all you've done for me you truly are one of the biggest reasons i made sure i came to school thank you for being you and to the rest of the staff thank you all for making aspen valley a home aspen valley a home for me and making my high school experience great if not for the academic experience aspen has provided me the past four years it would have been a lot harder and i wouldn't have the opportunity to further my education and become a nurse i would i truly appreciate all of you oh and thank you all for giving me a's it feels pretty cool to be valedictorian thank you [Applause] that was wonderful caitlyn thank you so much our next speaker is zoe schultz zoe has also attended aspen valley since middle school zoe is attending fort lewis college where she hopes to work as an animal behaviorist one day zoe thank you crazy i i'm not the greatest at species so bear with me hope i don't bore you but anyways like you said my name's zoe and i have been at aspen valley since seventh grade which is crazy like caitlyn said it feels like it's been forever i can't believe we're all here today it's just a crazy thing but who here does wish they were back in kindergarten you all can raise your hands i do not judge but anyway i can't believe like it doesn't feel real until like right now i walked in here and i put on my cap and gown and we went on the stage and i'm like i can't believe i did this i made it here and i just can't believe how far i've made it because honestly i didn't think i'd make it to this point back in like early elementary i was horrible at school like my best grade was a c and that was gym so yeah i was just i didn't understand it i was like grates behind in like every subject but come fourth grade i actually had decided to move colorado before that i was living in texas but when i moved here i went into counseling just to kind of help with the adjustment you know just make sure i was doing okay you know because like moving states is a huge thing and through that i found out i have autism and atd which definitely helped figure out ways to help with school and everything and it did i became a bc student which was great except i was still like two grades behind in math and reading and so all my elementary school and into middle school i was just like oh um we'll just put her in that's next grade she'll catch up yeah i did not come sixth grade my mom is so upset because i'm not getting the help i need and she's literally yelling at all the teachers because i'm not getting what i need and so at that point i was given two options either go to a different school be held back because they didn't want me to get bullied so if i was going to be held back they didn't want me to get made fun of or come to aspen valley i think we all know which one i chose anyway since then my grades drastically improved i am now an ab student with a 3.8 gpa thank you but i have like climbed mountains to get to that point and i wouldn't have done it without so many of my family members and i would specifically like to thank two people which one of them could not be here today um she lives in texas it's my grandmother i if she could she would be here but um fortunately she's not and she'd love to be here though um she is amazing so when i moved to colorado i have like so much family in colorado like it's not even funny like i can point and you'd find a family member but um i didn't get contact from most of them and my grandmother though she wrote me letters every month when i moved here and it just became our thing she reached out she always was there for me growing up when i was struggling she was the one who helped me make sure get my homework done she helped raise me she put up with me because i was just such a stubborn kid but yeah i just really want to appreciate her for that the second person i like to recognize is my colorado mom she was the one who helped me with my homework she's the one who was yelling at all those teachers by the way yeah don't mess with her do not make her mad at all but she has helped me with everything she i wouldn't be where i am today without her and i can see her crying over there but i would like to thank you you have helped me so far i can see you cry i'm going to cry now but i would just like to thank you you are the reason i am here today getting my diploma but yes thank you run and plus to her she deserves it [Applause] but lastly i'd like actually to thank caitlyn and kevin and ms zimmerman they're the ones who helped me prepare this speech last week um just without them like i'd be like stumbling over my words more than i already am but yeah and i just can't wait for what happens next thank you [Applause] nicely done zoe our last speaker is one of our student leaders through student council kevin cummings kevin plans to pursue a career in real estate and since our annual career day he has already made multiple connections in the field with his charisma please welcome kevin [Applause] man i honestly didn't think i'd be here right now i didn't think i would have the opportunity to graduate on time and i just i have to preface this whole speech by letting you all know ahead it's on this is going to be the longest thank you that you will ever hear in your life but i really do want to give a special thank you to everybody out there in the audience right now everybody that's on this stage right now because i would not personally be here without each and every one of you you all somehow played a role in these people's lives that played a role in my life or if you didn't you directly played some type of role and i just really want to have to say thank you and i feel like this thank you wouldn't have any gravity without mentioning that before i even got to the school before i really started to try and care about schooling i did not care about anything i didn't care about school i didn't care about myself i didn't care about others i did a lot of moving so i found it easy to just simply not care yeah as time goes on i began to mature i had an experience with raising my niece and i think that really contributed a lot to my growth as a person and coming to aspen valley that really allowed me to put all of that care that i had really grown to have for my niece and helped me extend it out to the world and i really do have to say thank you to each and every single one of you guys because i wouldn't be here standing up here with the microphone in a dream without each and every single one of you here i am so grateful and i am indebted to each and every one of you for it and with that i would have to say that i mean we made it you know i'm i'm these people i'm you all you are all somehow a way that i am who i am right now and i'm so very appreciative and with that i would have to give an honorary special thanks to my man mr bernie down there yeah i don't think you understand sir at that stuka retreat when you gave me those two pieces of advice it stuck with me so even now so that i could stand up here and want to inspire you all want to inspire the world try and reach out and make some type of change your first piece of advice to me was if i want the woman of my dreams i have to be the man of hers right and the second one is always wake up and be the best version of yourself that you can possibly be and i i cannot lie i'm not a perfect person sometimes i wake up and i fail that challenge but that does not stop me from each and every morning trying to wake up and be the best version of myself that i can be that man right there is my inspiration i aspire to be like you sir and i appreciate you and i just want to have to give one last thanks you all are so amazing and i appreciate you all for coming here today so i can give you this thanks because right now we've all made it you know each and every bad moment that we've all had each and every good moment we've had everything that's happened thus far has led up to this precise moment and with that i would like to say let's keep going let's do it again let's do something greater as people thank you [Applause] always memorable kevin thank you before and and honestly that kind of represents um our diversity and the uh charisma that is this class very many different stories i gotta watch this podium i'll knock it right back over um i would i would also like to share a few thoughts uh before we go ahead and confer diplomas for these fine individuals here i've been here for three years and want to share some reflections as i've got to watch them grow up a little bit and as mr gregory said it's a lot about how you do a job but i would also want to add that my reflections are all about why we do what we do why you've been through the path that you've been and how it will hopefully cause us all to do a little reflection as what kevin mentioned in his speech so aspen valley class of 2022 know that i am truly honored to be standing here with you and your family reminiscing over these last few years albeit challenging years to be sure pumas you have navigated your school journey well and have accomplished more in the last four years than any typical graduating classes have i could not be any more proud of you than i am today as i said this is my third graduation as principal and you are aspen's 26th graduating class every year for the last three years we have been in completely different venues we've had completely different plans we are hoping that this is the new future home for aspen graduations aspen is a small school as we all know but your class is exceptionally small however yours is the first to enjoy this beautiful new setting where we have lots of room to grow this is also the first graduation where the entire aspen valley village can join us in celebration we are a family at aspen valley and our motto is pumas take care of pumas this is but one example yours seems to be a class of firsts what else is in store for you first pandemic first to know the work of hybrid learning and now this staff and family venue are our firsts clearly a trailblazing class graduating from high school as we know is one of life's big events and this milestone causes to pause and look back i've been reflecting for the last many months and looking for the lessons in the moments that have defined your formative years while doing so many questions came to my mind but they all started with why most of these questions are rhetorical but i bet you have pondered the same ones over these last few years why did you choose aspen valley instead of a traditional setting why did you stay at aspen after mr stone retired why did you choose to return to a brick-and-mortar school throughout the pandemic time after time why did covid happen during your tenure some of your peers stayed online why didn't you still some of your peers earned their ged why did you choose to work towards your diploma sitting here today why didn't you choose to leave school and start work sooner why did you keep getting up schlepping your way to school and pushing through subconsciously or consciously pumas voluntarily or not you chose the following you chose daily planner requirements with accountability and evaluations every class every day every year you agreed to a ninety percent attendance uh hectorly attendance rate you followed academic expectations that didn't allow you to earn d's for credits standing here today means you chose to successfully complete your first college class some of you as of this morning all of you complied with our cpr training 180 hours of work experience and 72 hours of community service and that is on top of everything else why throughout high school career during some of the most difficult times in education you chose a tougher and more rigorous path you chose to go through aspen valley's doors reflecting on your reasons we will take you some time and i do urge you to spend some time this summer processing those questions for contemplating those reasons you will prepare propel prepare for and propel yourself beyond august of this year and why august august of 2022 will be the real test of your why when most adolescents will be going back to compulsory secondary schooling some of you will be heading to college by choice some of you will be heading to work instill some of you into the military august of 2022 is when your real life begins some of your answers to my earlier questions might be grounded in because my parents made me however soon choices will all be yours and decisions ought to be conscious and thoughtful and grounded in why your decisions have taken guts jaden jackson tia coy malik dylan and dylan zoe ian owen caitlin kevin lane and timothy you have moxie you have adapted and conquered you have braved a non-traditional school setting you've put on and off your masks suffered in and out of quarantines bounced between in-class learning and online learning work with new staff member after new staff member avoided and were even restricted from traditional gatherings and then mustered through as we redefined what normal was again what else stands out about this class of what other firsts will you accomplish i've observed you honoring our motto and taking care of one another some of you have been friends since middle school or beyond and some of you only got to know each other in just the last couple years but your collective school experiences have uniquely bonded you as unique as each of you are graduates you might very well be each other's why as we heard in some of your speeches we've seen your courageous acts of selflessness and your triumph over horrendous odds you've lived experiences that are still shaping what you believe to be true and worthy your past is starting to define you but the work isn't finished yet and far from it i urge you to keep asking yourselves why repeatedly as your future life's experiences reveal more uncertainties more struggles more opportunities more hope and if you choose more joy pumas you have may i'm sorry you have you may have asked multiple times over the last three years why you and i propose today to consider why not you look at what you have already accomplished with your peers one final reflection for this class of 2022.

we'd share these last month as a first reading but mark has worked with all the directors on these projects making sure that they're aligned to our goals projects and initiatives specifically our formative assessment practices sel literacy tech and our curricular alignment to common core and then in addition financially sean were right in line with where we've been in the past in terms of the overall budget for summer curriculum so tonight we're presenting you the 2022 summer curriculum projects for your approval can i have a motion so much second any questions on the proposals uh pull the board please grierson all right wounds oh i forgot uh whitesburg for us no hi all right well carry six to nothing okay and then two first readings for tonight uh the first is a first reading of our student guide book uh for the 22-23 school year so again this is just a first reading we're going to give you a chance to look it over this is a redline version troy and ken has worked with the deans on this um there's new most of these changes are editing there's some new sections on health and wellness and student mental health so you can take a chance take a look at those over the course of the next month we'll answer any questions that you might have in june and then in addition um we're bringing forward our approval of the final 2021-2022 school calendar um there are no modifications if you remember each year in may and june carol we have the board approve the calendar from the current year and then carol submits that with isb before june 30th so can i ask you a question um can you talk a little bit i looked at the changes in the student guide book and the changes for mental health i thought were really interesting can you just explain a little bit what was trying to give us a little overview i'm so sorry just the work that you and ken did on the mental health pieces of the guidebook yeah so we're just working hard to make sure that we're clear with where uh students can get assistance and how the student support team works for students and so which person is like what's a different job so if a student doesn't happen to know the definition of the difference between a social worker a site they'll know if i want to go to someone where might they go and then all the a full update now that we've built and we changed the um east side a full update of where everyone is so where they can find people so in some respects you're codifying for lack of a better word kind of the practices so that they're clear in the in the handbook exactly any other questions for the admin team the first reads okay so personnel section um we have our program approvals the human resources report and we will not need an executive session following the meeting and that takes us to the business section and sean we begin with the adoption of the 2021 2022 amended budget and establishing a public hearing that's correct at this point in time we need to open a public hearing for the proposed 2021-22 amended budget and before we do that just want to remind um the board back in march we um put the amended budget on display and there were two major items that we needed to amend the budget for one was the bond sale that we had conducted back in february at the time we weren't sure the exact dollar amount so we didn't budget for it and then we also decreased many of our expenditures we had you know done a good job of kind of tightening the belt if you will um so we wanted to recognize that as well so if the board would be so kind as to open a public hearing on the proposed 2021-22 amended district 125 budget can we have a motion to open for public hearings so first and second voice vote all in favor opposed passes uh any discussion this discussion in public comment if there's any okay can i have a motion to close the public hearing on the human budget again a voice photo in favor opposed it passes um now that the public hearing is closed we have a motion to approve or adopt the amended budget is presented any other questions for sean on the budget which has been on uh display since march sean did you get any questions between when it was open from the public no no i had no emails or questions or phone calls okay no other questions would you please pull the board westberg hi frost hi no hi all right well i carries six to nothing okay and then sean uh we need a notice uh authorization to public to publicize um the adoption of the 2022-2023 budget correct and earlier uh this uh this evening at our finance committee meeting we did talk about the highlights of the 23 fiscal year 23 budget which were in line with the cost of living or the inflation from year to year which regulates um how much revenue we can receive um we are trying to and we've kept our expenditures in line um with that cpi so there there are two motions tonight one is to actually put the budget on display and then the second would be to set a public hearing for our next board meeting in june on the 21st of 2022.

it's a whole lot of recommended deletions of covid language specific to visitors entering the building i don't feel it's necessary for me to read through all that with you guys unless you'd like me to okay i appreciate that um and quite simply put covert yeah you can go ahead covet proto my rationale would be covid protocols are no longer in place [Laughter] moving along to page 11 lost and found what i'm recommending that we delete is the second sentence there if you have lost something in the school building ask the school office secretary who will check into the lost and found collection in the office so at prairie knowles i know several of you have frequented in that building we don't have our lost and found inside the main office so having a student go ask the office staff and then go back out to the lost and found it just didn't make a whole lot of sense to us and you know fortunately we had a discussion as an administrative team at pk and you know dr hogg does a great job of communicating this type of protocol you know at the beginning of the school year and throughout so he does so in his weekly newsletter uh we cover this at length with students when they first enter our building specifically with the sixth graders interviewing it with the seventh graders as well um as we all know this impacts central middle school as well so discussing that with their administrative team i'll be honest i have not set foot in central middle school outside of a couple times but they've told me that they're lost and found is also not in the main office and just like pk they communicate protocol for lost and found at length before throughout at the conclusion of the school year um so that is why we deleted that language uh next moving along to the back side middle school locker rooms on page 15 this in my opinion revisits um oh no it doesn't we're just uh deleting um some language specific uh two coveted product protocols due to current kova 19 protocols middle school lockers will not be utilized until schools are reopened full-time in-person learning once we assign lockers to students district and building policies and rules will apply i can speak for pk the kids have done a phenomenal job of transitioning back into lockers full time staff from the get-go has been outside their classroom doors looking for opportunities to help students i would say that staff's effort during our task and advisory period has been huge for all of our kids and not just 6th graders 7th graders as well so i think that's been a job well done by our staff next moving along to student dress board policy 7 colon 160.

and it came to me while working with jc and logan our performers over this last month logan and jc jc share their talents by performing the song count on me it's written by bruno mars while you may not be a bruno fan you grew up to his music the song was also featured in one of the diary of wimpy kid movies another likely memory from your childhood reading up on the two artists peter hernandez which is bruno mars birth name and jeff kinney the author of wimpy kids series i discovered some interesting tidbits that resonated with this class the stories from the diary of a wimpy kid taught you not to think too highly of yourselves size isn't everything don't grow up too fast and family is really important these books inspired for many the love of reading but it was interesting to learn that it took the author over eight years to write the stories for his first book and that was after not finding success as a cartoonist mr mars grew up in hawaii in a biracial home that was poverty stricken he lost his mother at a young age and was bullied in school he wrote the song count on me to show what true friendship looks like let me read some of those lyrics to you again if you forget how much you really mean to me every day i will remind you we'll find out what we're made of when we're called to help our friends in need you can count on me like one two three and i'll be there and i know when i need it i can count on you like 432 and you'll be there because that's what friends are supposed to do you'll always have my shoulder when you cry i'll never let go never say goodbye we'll find out what we're made of when we're called to help our friends in need many of you too have struggled many of you did not find success at first many of you have lost someone and some of you may still feel like that wimpy kid and even if you're never going to see each other again after today your friendships the way you leaned on each other the way you counted on each other to be there and the way you rose and moments of needs those social and emotional lessons will propel you if you've learned nothing from our recent past remember that it is the people in your life that will always we finally made it it's funny to think all the way back to our freshman year we always had upperclassmen telling us that high school would go by fast i would be sitting in my algebra one class thinking to myself that it would never end and yet here we are i know i have carried on the tradition of telling the underclassmen that will go by in the blink of an eye because honestly i still feel like i'm in the midst of covid and i know that most of you do too if you would ask me four years ago how my graduation would go i would have said at a different high school in the district and a lot of the students graduating today would tell you the same thing village high school is one place i never expected to be and let me tell you the story of how i got here i was a student at another school and was having a really hard time fitting in by sophomore year i had maybe one friend did not enjoy my classes peers or teachers i felt looked down upon disliked and outcast one day i had a conversation with my mom about how i was unhappy at my school and i thought about transferring i had heard about village before but didn't know if it would be the right fit for me i thought transferring schools was going to leave me in the same place that i had been the past two years eventually i had the meet and greet with our principal mr nathan gorsh it was a facetime at this point covet had changed everything to virtual including as some call him mr bossman i sat on the call with my mom and as soon as it was over i stood up and i said i am going there pretty sure she looked at me like i just lost my mind but i just had the best feeling about the community and the atmosphere that nathan explained and i was excited for the first time in a while it is sad to think that some of you sitting here today had a similar experience but the community that we have had access to has changed our lives forever first of all on behalf of our class i would like to thank all the teachers i have had a conversation with every single teacher at this school even the ones i have never had a class with before and they have all made me feel involved safe welcome and seen and as nathan said they're pretty awesome i will never forget when i first transferred to the village i was so used to walking the halls with my head down straight to class and i was shocked when every single teacher and staff member would say good morning when i walked past them i never would have thought that a good morning would make such an impact on me but it has not only teachers but the staff has also been accommodating welcoming and friendly nathan miss lindsey jake miss kimmy officer jeff tim and all the other staff has made just as much of an impact on us all our class would like to give the biggest thank you to you all teachers you make the biggest impact on a student's life sorry um and you've all done your job to the extreme i wasn't gonna cry basketball basketball you have given every student a mentor a reason to come to school and have seen them as a person not just as a number in the class oh my gosh i will miss all the relationships and inside jokes that i have with you all and then i built with you i could never thank you enough nathan i would like to give one last thank you to you for creating an environment where kids can create relationships grow as people and become prepared for adulthood class of 2022 we have all grown so much as individuals and as a community village high school has been the perfect atmosphere for us to grow and learn and as ms lindsay would say make mistakes and i think i can say that we all have mistakes just mean that we are learning and we should be we should never be ashamed to make them our journeys have just started and this school has allowed all of us to flourish in some way that will improve our futures and i hope that all of you will continue to live through our seven pillars independence literacy wellness collaboration communication passion and creativity and never forget the lessons that we have learned while we have the time to learn them without repercussions keep being who you are and never let anyone put you down take risks even if they feel like a giant terrifying leap don't let fear dictate your life create your own journey through confidence and love and finally we have been taught a million things these past four years how to write an essay how to solve for x how to balance a chemical equation and how to procrastinate on accelerate but we have learned so much more than just how to succeed in our academics we have learned how to live like our teachers have shown us have empathy be involved respectful resilient confident care about others and never fail to find joy in what you love my final and greatest advice to you all teachers parents and students is to make the effort to say good morning it is such a small but impactful phrase and it can make the biggest difference in someone's life next i would like to introduce gemma ponce [Applause] good morning village and happy tuesday when i think back on the last four years a lot comes to mind there is a lot to remember it was four years after all i remember the cml the building in which we started as freshmen where miss lindsay's office was the clubhouse where we had grade level electives in the fishbowl and where that poor betta fish was gifted to miss lindsay i think of all the friendships i've formed and the mentors i've had and of course i can't think back on high school without thinking of school of the classes i've taken from beekeeping to math and of the place i look forward to spending my time every day and i can't think of school at the village without thinking of how we start out each day with morning meeting morning meeting has been more than a time for maddie to remind us to buy our senior hoodies or for groups to make announcements or for teachers that remind us that we need to be at 25 percent by the end of the week always really concerning um it has also been a time for miss lindsay and now some other teachers to share with us small daily goals or friendly reminders to be friendly show kindness and to stay present and sometimes to just breathe and fellow graduates i have some mildly concerning news for you there will no longer be weekly morning meeting reminders to check your emails so i guess we just have to hope that somewhere along the line we picked up the habit of checking our emails but all joking aside parents we promise that we can check our emails without someone reminding us and it feels fitting that given that this is how we started out each of our days together to have one final set of reminders to send us into our final day together as village students and into this next chapter of our lives first just in case here's everyone's last and final reminder please check your email every day and along with that here's a reminder to bring with us all the professional habits we've formed this one is kind of boring but nonetheless important because as crazy as it might seem we are prepared for this next step we have everything we need to be successful adults in fact we have some of the most important professional characteristics and skills we are independent and we know how to problem solve through unknown situations we also know how to ask for help when we need it it is okay to not always have the answers and in fact you won't always have the answer but by asking for help you will know how to get an answer next a reminder to stay present and to enjoy the time we have with loved ones and each season now that we're here we see just how quickly four years can go by even if there were moments that felt like they would never end shout out to ap chem and titrations here we still are four impossibly quick years later but looking back the bright colorful moments that stand out are the times i was enjoying the moment and being in the moment with friends i hope to always have those bright memories with me while most of the work has just blurred together to become a sort of beige blob nothing particularly special or noteworthy and fortunately not a memory i will always cherish along with a reminder to stay present here's a reminder to take a moment and reflect every once in a while reflect on the good times and on the mistakes on what to do more of and what to avoid next time especially right now as we come to the close of a chapter in our lives let's all think back and reflect on what those bright colorful moments were for each of us and let's make an effort to have even more of them moving forward by being present finally at risk of sounding cliche here's a reminder about kindness we all know the power of kindness and the impact the smallest act of kindness can have on your day so here's your reminder to use this powerful tool to brighten the world around us even when it feels impossible when we don't think the other person deserves it when we just don't have any energy left or when we just aren't feeling it let's show kindness as we've learned kindness doesn't need to be an overly thought out grand gesture kindness can be small a smile a compliment or a simple good morning and kindness is infectious it leads to more kindness and at least a kindness in others and it fills our lives becoming part of who we are so let's make kindness the one infection we do spread and cultivate in our own lives now granted this is all easier said than done and i suppose i was a beauty of morning meeting reminders big concepts and goals broken down into small reminders each day so that in the end we've been working towards being kind present independent people for the past four years so if nothing else if we don't do anything more with these reminders let's just think of the people we've become the lessons we've learned and the people we've become sorry the lessons and skills we've learned and let's carry that person those skills and those lessons forward with us to make it a great day a great month year and life so one last time turn to your neighbor and tell them make it a great day yes and our ground and our graduation ceremony would not be complete without a speech from our principal mr nathan gorsh [Applause] thanks gemma i'm pretty sure someday gemma's going to rule the world we're going to say we knew were in high school when i think of each graduating class i try to come up with a few words that capture the class as i thought about you class of 22 i have a lot of memories that come flashing back you're a very special class to me on a personal level i remember when some of you were born and even visited some of you as newborns in the hospital one of you i worked with your mother when she was pregnant with you for one of you i was even present at your birth i thought about all the different names you've called me all of you have called me nathan mr nathan or mr gorsh depending on your preference some of you have called me coach as we put together a baseball team when you were 9 or 10 years old some of you have called me mr boss man much to my chagrin i don't like the term boss some of you have called me mr principal man and some other terms that may not be appropriate for graduation right joey taylor but the thing i hope you all call me his friend and that's where i want to spend some time on packing this morning because i think that's probably the most important role any of us will have in our lifetime as a spouse a parent a worker in your church mosque or synagogue in your neighborhood or other social settings i hope you focus on the idea of always being a great friend with the rise of social media the idea of friendship has taken on a different meaning we use the term friend to describe an acquaintance someone in our social circle or in some cases maybe even somebody that agrees with us politically but i challenge each of you to be a different kind of friend my hope is you're the first person others call when they experience a crisis in life of losing a job the passing of a family member or an unexpected illness i hope that you sacrifice a large number of friends for a smaller group that you get to know on a deeper heartfelt level where you're open to share your greatest successes and your greatest failures that you're the kind of friend who's able to finish the sentence of another because of how well you know them or can know someone better than maybe even they know themselves when i look up the definition of friend webster's dictionary describes it as one attached to another by affection or esteem one who's not hostile one that's of the same nation party group one that favors or promotes something or a favored companion it's kind of lame those are all very clinical but i love the list of synonyms that are also in that same entry amigo buddy chum compadre comrade confidante crony musketeer powell and mate so as you leave your high school years you've had a wonderful training ground in friendship you've made some mistakes in who you trusted and who you did not and as you launch into the world my hope is you take those lessons and build upon them to take care of others know that you will always have folks at village high school keeping up on your outstanding accomplishments and that you'll always have an amigo a buddy and a mate cheering you on and now mr lavallee it's with the greatest of pride we present to you the members of the class of 2022 as principal i hereby certify that these young men and women have met the requirements for graduation from village high school and academy school district 20 and i recommend all of them for their diplomas [Applause] you nathan on behalf of the board of education of academy so first can i have the motion uh to put the tentative budget on display for public hearing he knew that i said it amy seconded uh would you pull the board please first hi no i argue gorson aye moon's eye whisper all right it carries six to nothing okay and then i need a motion to set the public hearing for reviewing the 2022-23 budget in june first and second any questions about that would you please pull the board certainly no hi artwell gorson aye moon's eye whisperer all right hi here is six to nothing okay thank you um the next item is uh an item that doesn't typically happen but we do have are asking for emergency approval on our stadium lighting we have earlier this spring had a situation where on the two north banks of our lights in the stadium went dark we still had the two south lights on so they were very functional we were able to get one of the banks of lights on the north end to turn back on after investigation we did find that the electrical wire which is installed at a time that code didn't require the electrical cables to be buried in conduit and we also found that those wires are actually buried underneath the stadium turf so what we are recommending is uh to fix um the situation is a couple of things first we want to go ahead and re-route the electrical outside of the field stadium outside of the stadium turf so that it if there's ever in a situation in the future we don't have to worry about digging up the turf for the repairs secondly we want to go ahead and encase that electrical wiring in conduit and then the third part is really an energy savings and carbon footprint model is where we want to switch out the actual lamps and fixtures that are on the poles from high pressure sodium to [Music] an led light that operational savings the good news for that operational savings is that we'll save approximately fifteen thousand dollars just on the lighting um and then i was able to find out um late uh earlier this afternoon actually we submitted the um when we submitted the grant to comed they actually have um two new grants where we can save up to 40 of the cost of not just the lamp fixtures but also of the installation of the wiring um so we're hoping to um take advantage of that i won't know the exact dollar amount until comet approves the um the grant but we didn't go ahead and um uh submit that application so all in all when you factor in the the trenching the pulling of the wire on the capping of the old wire removal of the old wire and the new lamps we are asking that the board of education approve that emergency replacement of the stadium lights at a cost of nazi to not exceed 540 000 can you have a motion uh questions for sean sean to say these lights were end of life would be an understatement right that would be correct these are the original lamps and fixtures that were installed when the lights came into play back in the 80s 80s correct when the lights i remember when we installed it i know from the old lady in the board but um there was no turf correct that was grass at the time they just trenched across the field yep one to the other and so be it now we have turf that's correct life has changed uh i'm sure diane hoda would be pleased to know that we're not taking them now but we are replacing them for something better because she was the the spearhead of that fundraising to put stadium lights in correct and one of the other benefits too is um because they're led lights we can get the same amount of output with a little with less energy but we can also turn on one or two banks and not have to turn on all four banks at the same time which when we have early or late practices depending on what the practice is we might not have to turn them on and be kind of create that light pollution if you will for our neighborhood there's four banks of lights and um what's that four yeah so each pole has um my goodness i think we're have to go back and look but i think there's uh something like 30 lights on each bank right now and we're going to be able to replace it with less lights because we won't because of the led output that's coming from them and this cost is before before any rebates correct and we also um sean and i had a conversation earlier about whether there's any alternatives and because of the the way this is laid where the correct the wires are the conduit the end of life with the lights there's really nowhere else no real alternative no and even if we didn't even if we decided to trench it through the field and directional bore the cost is the same actually it would be a little bit more the direction or underneath the turf and the problem again boring underneath the turf is now if there's an issue you actually have to dig up the turf which in itself is an expensive proposition and then utilizes our outdoor classroom and the turf that we use for the athletic programs inoperable for a period of time will this be all completed before next fall and we start using it again so the safety issues we'll have it up and ready before august and we have backups in case in the in the meantime but and this will you put out the bed i'm sorry say that again no this is already been um we used the emergency action where we didn't bid this but what we did do is purchase it on a co-op so that we knew we were getting the best price that has already been competitively bid on our behalf by the government so that part was in fact bid and the um installation we're actually using one of the electricians that's currently on site for one of our other projects and got quotes from three different electricians to make sure that the quotes were in line with industry averages if you will okay any other questions on the motion would you please pull the board erwin grayson hi moon's eye weisberg hi frost no hi motion care is six to nothing cake shawn adoption of resolution of points uh i am an imrf authorized agent correct so um imrf is the illinois municipal retirement fund that is the pension fund that um covers all of our non-certified employees um every year we need to appoint our authorized agent uh in for the last 20 years it has been maureen owens maureen owens is graduating or retiring depending on how you want to look at it this june um lorena garcia is replacing her and so tonight we are asking that the board of education approved the resolution to appoint lorena garcia as the authorized agent for imrf reporting purposes uh any questions for sean and just to be clear she's not replacing murray maureen's irreplaceable but she will be filming that transitioning into that role she is that's correct we're going to miss marie she's special most definitely lorraine is pretty amazing she's lorraine is amazing too but martin's special yeah absolutely uh would you please pull the board certainly corson aye moon's eye whisper frost hi no hi all right well carrie's six to nine okay you have two um first readings there the first is the approval of the 2022-2023 non-union administrative salary pools we'll share more information on that at our may board meeting where we review administrative team performance and then the second first reading is approval of the detention center and governmental agreement uh renewal um and we'll bring that to the board um as we do every three years sean in june correct correct yeah we're just waiting for the um lake county judicial consultant to basically give us that new agreement okay and then there are no foias this month and that brings us to the consent can you have a motion for the consent agenda any questions for eric on the items on the consent agenda uh would you please pull the board yes wounds all right voice work for us no approved six to nothing all right and uh the only item i had for tonight were all of those ambassador awards uh that was pretty special so troy thank you for being our mc you did a great job and mark thank you for uh coordinating you were fantastic um we appreciate your guys help and it's really great to see so many kids get recognized that was a lot of fun and a lot more to come and let's do it again in june how about that uh the june board meeting will be in the little house uh we have a couple meetings before then and graduation coming up uh at the now center is it then now what is it no it's the uh so um looking forward to seeing everybody there for the athletes yes the monday uh sorry tuesday 9 a.m right here the 31st first yeah that's correct right and we'll do a special graduation for our all of our kids who are in competition that friday night who can't attend and so um we'll do a mini graduation we think there'll be about 10 or 12 kids that day so it was really nice we've done it before every year every year breakfast at 8 30 and graduation at nine and it'll be the shortest graduation ten kids but so still congratulations for that and then we have the um the dates would include uh we've got the retirement all right if you're coming to that um and there's a number of events obviously there in the board book that are coming up may is full of meetings that we've got if we're keeping if we're keeping the athletes here should we keep our ropes no no i don't think we've worn them i don't think we know yes typically not excuse them you know one quick question um i heard a rumor that we set a record try not to believe in rumors yeah that we had eight kids accepted to harvard out of this year's class how many dates i cannot i cannot confirm that rumor i don't know but i can find out for you what i what i'm curious about which is generally how the class how the class did i know that the other class was generally speaking they got into more of their first choice colleges than any other class before them because i know that the performance of the tests and everything which has been skyrocketed so all the student achievement score you'll see in august in our retreat all the student achievement scores are up um and what's really amazing about that is that's in the middle of the pandemic you know so kids managed to really um do well not that they weren't stressed we know the kids were stressed and it was a hard you know two years um but they still managed to do really well and and again some of that data is self-reported too right so again you can't you have to take it as self-reported data but yeah the kids were reporting they were getting into more of their first choice colleges than ever before any other questions for the team then can i have a motion to adjourn so second first and second uh all in favor opposed uh we are adjourned thank you thank you

this is on page 36. what we are recommending is the deletion for guidance for face coverings again i won't read through that entire portion there but because covert protocols do not apply anymore we figured it would make sense to get rid of that in the handbook moving along to page 39 health services um again this is under communicable and chronic infectious disease which is board policy 7 colon 280 underneath that uh we have cova 19 language any individual who tests positive for cova 19 or shows any signs or symptoms of illness should stay home and so on we are recommending that we delete that language as well moving along to page 40 excuses from pe board policy 7 colon 260. pretty simple here in the second sentence of that paragraph excuses for medical reasons it reads notes to excuse students from pe classes for medical reasons are to be are to be presented to the main office we would like to delete main office and add school nurse because at the end of the day that is who needs that documentation um and again from my vantage point of prairie knowles that communication is very high level our nurse lawrence sack does a wonderful job working with our families um and administration certainly supports what she does on a daily basis uh finally district 301 middle school retention policy this is on page 45.

this is centered towards central middle school um we're recommending the deletion of eighth graders who have not earned at least the required 12 credits by the last day of school will not be allowed to participate in the eighth grade promotion ceremony after discussing this and reviewing this with uh cathy britzackson and kerry walters well there is no eighth grade promotion ceremony um and all students um at the end of the year they participate in the end of the year festivities at cms so we saw no reason to have that language in there and that concludes the revisions to the middle school handbook i had a couple questions for you if you don't mind sure what was the backpack rationale school safety we did what i can say from a personal standpoint when i am observing classrooms walking through the hallways and to be honest with you specific two classrooms you know sixth grade teachers seventh grade teachers they ask that their students place their backpack on chairs or underneath their desks when i walk into a classroom i i just see that as a safety concern i mean i've literally watched a handful of teachers hurdle over school backpacks while they're circulating the classroom trying to check in with kids um and specifically at the middle school where we have that middle school concept so kids on six red their locker is probably going to be about 20 feet outside that classroom the only real issue we can see with that are with our encore classes where for going uh to phys ed art um you know energy and environment anything that's near that door 26 that could be a challenge for a student it really could um and i think that's where you know task and advisory really comes into play where we practice and rehearse with those kids a lot of the critical conversation that i've had personally with kids is kind of game planning you know it's kind of a life management skill to be honest with you and i i reflect back to my days as a junior high student um you know i've got ela math and uh you know pe so i'm gonna bring my ela stuff my math stuff go back to my locker i'll be supported by my teachers then make my way and pee with my necessary materials so as we've transitioned to that throughout the school year yeah if a kid is a couple seconds late to class but they're showing that same sense of urgency teachers are going to identify that administrators are going to identify that in the hallway and provide those kids support and cms is the same with structure for classes and hall correct lockers or clustered yes and then uh a question on dress code of course sure um thankfully my daughter made it through scantily clad and all you know i guess um i know there was talk about changing that i guess why was it not updated because our language is just very archaic there was certainly discussion amongst the administrative team and amongst the middle school handbook policy um and again full disclosure when i saw guidance for changing any type of board policy that's already been approved um when i read the current language i feel it supports what we want you know our children coming to school and appropriate dress attire and from a personal standpoint when you know a teacher or a staff member presents an issue to me and in seeking administrative guidance yeah you're going to have to have some of those critical conversations with students um and those critical conversations aren't aren't successful unless you involve the parent um so i feel confident in the protocol specifically at pk where we have that open line of communication uh as administrators we're not there to you know play the i gotcha game um you know if we see something we address it professionally appropriately and we involve the parents in those conversations to that point how much do you get involved with this is a big issue for me i you know walking through the hallways you know i'll see hats as an issue um you know and dr hogg would be obviously my right hand man or maybe i'm his um and mrs alstead if we see something like that we'll have a polite conversation with the kid and you know one thing that's really impressed me about our students is there's no back talk there's no disrespect you know if an adult asks you to do something and again it's asking not telling you know the kid falls right in line and i'm to be honest i worked in a lot of buildings where that's not the case um so i firmly believe that you know kids in our building they appreciate structure they respect what's in the handbook um and they're open to having conversations you know i've had conversations with kids mr nuquist you know why can't i wear a hat oh buddy it's in the handbook and this was agreed upon and i'm not lying to them um it's a healthy conversation other dress code infections again i i'd reference those critical conversations we have we always want to make sure we're having those in a comfortable environment for the student um we we don't enjoy we don't want to ever call a student out in front of their peers and i think our teachers do a really good job of that as well if there's ever a student in question uh teachers do a wonderful job of communicating to myself mrs alstead or dr hogg um and again we we just go about the right way and i apologize if that's not detailed enough but um i feel confident that the student's not uncomfortable yeah i haven't heard anything outrageous but i just care yes it's it's self-policing it just fixes itself or yeah i think you know you'll always have you know a couple students you know as they grow older that are you know not testing it but you know in my opinion they they kind of seek an adrenaline rush to an extent and you know if you if you have a respectful conversation with that kid they amaze you um at the responses they give you um and if anything it improves the relationship between the student the teacher and the administrator because kind of see eye to eye thank you i think the other thing to note here is that we're following board policy 7.160.

aye motion passes thank you thank you and we do have one speaker for our public comments and miss olivia connolly if you'll please state your name and address for the record please olivia connolly 9354 east oakridge drive thank you my name is olivia connelly and i'm a student at clark middle school the reason i'm here today is because i've been constantly dress coded wearing shorts natural wearing jeans with holes that are above my knees in the student handbook in page 11 section 18 bullet point 5 all shorts and skirts must be no shorter than the fingertips of the students when arms are at the side and on the same page in the same section below 0.6 the text states holes in the clothing should be no higher than the knee i've been dress coded in the school with holes that would be here but if i cut my jeans to shorts then it would be perfectly fine the skirt i'm wearing now is fine but if i was wearing jeans with the holes where my skirt ends it would not be fine so the reason i'm here is to change the dress code where holes can start where the fingertips end okay did you want us i want to put you on the spot dr morocco no you've uh raised an interesting point so we'll take it under advisement and we will be visiting those rules here very shortly so thank you we'll see what we can do thank you thank you thank you all right do we have no other public comments so we will move on to our board comments and consideration of future agenda items mr marshall oh thank you it is certainly gratifying to see all the faces out there i know in my marriage my wife was the teacher of long standing who finally retired after 43 years at her school system so i know what people are feeling out there at least i think i do it's it's wonderful to see the faces and the joy and the enthusiasm and i want to wish everyone well obviously they're not here to hear that but maybe they are in a way thank you mrs kelly i'll kind of echo howard just congratulations to all of our retirees and thank you for your service to the school thank you dr madeline i'll echo the same sentiment thank you to all the teachers in the district and keep dr melco that was a pretty cool night you have to say yeah it was awesome it's good to see people i haven't seen in years and to congratulate them and of course it's a bittersweet night needless to say losing uh we won't be able to see some individuals that are so powerful and so effective for our students and i do believe that our spring sports students are doing quite well and i know i think i saw on piper's sign where in the home stretch hang in there so you just remind everybody we're in that home stretch so hang in there don't give up and look forward to seeing everyone at graduation and thank you and i just wanted to make mention that the boys track and field um that they earned first place for the first time since 2012 so i thought that was pretty cool to read and the war memorial on saturday if you haven't had a chance make sure you stop and see that wall mrs seuss yeah and it's we forgot to mention that kevin mathis has been selected as the national high school coach of the year for dance yeah quite an accomplishment so um and also with the track the girls continue to do very well with their dac awards yes yeah and yeah it's just so exciting so uh i assume softball is doing well in baseball although i don't know i don't follow it i mean i do but yeah their season is still continuing i think they go even after school ends but we just like to talk you guys don't care do you it's like you want to go i know so i wish everyone well the next five days and with that we will turn it over to dr veraco board calendar future activities yes so let's hope for some really good weather next wednesday at 6 30 so back several years ago if you recall there was separate uh requirements for student dress code and they're actually going directly to the board policy that's been approved by the board of education that's what's actually been inputted inside the handbook i mean i was just a pk on and cms on friday as well i mean i see kids all the time that clearly are not abiding by this dress code hands down so my concern is how are we choosing the kids to say something to i see shorts that are clearly above way above their i mean they're here when their arms at their side so i don't personally have an issue with that sure i don't care what my kids wear my kids are probably the ones who are going to wear what they want to wear and test those limits because i would encourage that i think there's something to that so um so i think the concern is the equity with which these policies are put into place what kids are getting targeted maybe differently than other kids that is my concern and i think that's something that we had talked about several years ago as well so you're asking me no i'm saying i mean i walk through the hallways there's kids that are clearly violating these policies so sure how are we choosing the kids to maybe have a respectful conversation with versus the ones that we don't have a respectful conversation with because you can walk down the hallway and passing period and see holes above the knees where their hands are see short shorts and again i don't have an issue with that right but if that's what the policy is it's not getting policed equitably right and i would say you know not to use use your verbage but i don't go to school looking to be a police for dress code you know what i mean um i i would just say you know from my end if a staff member or another student brings it to my attention um and you know perhaps mentions it might be a disruption to the learning environment where that focus isn't why we're here in the first place um then those critical conversations need to be had with that student or that group of students for that matter um and we all need to you know have that open line of communication come to an agreement of what is appropriate what is not appropriate and certainly involve the parents in that conversation i agree with their disrupt i completely agree with the disruption of the school environment that's a non-issue but that's my whole point is the kids are just moving through the hallways it's not disruptive right so that's again there's leeway there but again my concern is are there going to be different kids that are targeted for different reasons that's my that's my the the end point that would be concerning to me as a board member i i'd say without having specific data in front of me to track that i i don't feel that you know and what does that mean but you know i don't feel that we're targeting specific students um you know if we were to target specific students it would be more centered towards a hat than anything you know the same kid wears a hat on the bus when he gets to school and takes it off or she for that matter um so i think if we were targeting anybody specific to the dress code it would be more so more so for the hats to be honest with you and if there are the challenges with the board we're more than happy to work on the board policy and bring back different board policy that we would replace inside the handbooks but i do think for the administration's purpose they are taking actual board policy inserted their handbook so if we do see concerns with what the language is here we're more than happy to bring forward something different in board policy if that's what you're requesting i think what eric is saying this just needs to be consistent let's just make sure that all staff members it's hard a woman you know a female that is large busted in middle school versus a female that's not and you look at the tank top that might be low cut somebody who has a larger busted or something else is probably going to draw more attention or if you look at somebody who's you know different physiques draw attention to different things so a teacher may pick up somebody there where it looks like they're you know they're showing more than one or maybe disrupting other parties more so than somebody who is more smaller framed by those types of things because that's what happens in middle school you start to see changes in middle school students from fifth grade up you start to see some of those physical changes that occur so i think sometimes that's what's causing it's not necessarily a target it's more about what somebody might pick up as being more offensive or maybe drawing attention to them or those types of things so it's when you're dealing with children who are different sizes different you know they grow differently adolescence comes at a different rate sometimes that's an impactful piece as well and what might draw attention to or to somebody some kids are more curvy by the time they hit middle school some kids stay you know not curb at all like they're third graders you know until they get into high school so i think some of those challenges when you look with a middle school system the adolescent piece of childhood is always one of those things if apart from hats this is something that's happening five times a week well i don't care because that's such a low percentage of the school of you know 700 800 kids so like again it doesn't sound like it's happening with any sort of significant frequency so that's less of an issue for me but again if if a kid were feeling unfairly targeted who are they going to talk to their parents probably like who's the kid get it i would say as an observer though with pk you guys are doing a great job so keep it up i think you know what what i thoroughly enjoy and why i'm happy to be where i'm at is we address things from an administrative uh piece as a team you know in terms of you know something like dress code i mean it's very common to have you know carrie alstead you know help an issue on a monday you know i might take the next one if i'm available on a wednesday and dr hough finishes up on a friday it's all the same message and i think that's crucial and i think you know as a new administrator to the building at the start of the year you know dr hogg did what was common knowledge was have me be present as he addresses those conversations so to ensure that it's the sum of the same message throughout um so again it's it's a piece where as you know dr mangan said we'd be very open um you know in the future to be part of those conversations um but i'm very confident um from as an administrator that we're going about it the right way and having those appropriate conversations with the student and the families i guess i'd like to look at the board policy and then i didn't realize it was my bad that they were taking it from board policy but i don't quite get why a discussion would be made about dress code with your committee um on the handbook if it wasn't going to change because it's pulled right from board policy i guess sure so that seems kind of like a waste of time on everybody's part that was done you know it seems kind of ridiculous yeah i think back probably five years ago uh it was separate pieces that you saw and now you know one of the things we work with the legal counsel is to make sure that we're marrying up for policy with what we're expecting for our administrators to follow through within the school so we have consistency in the event that you know we have a litigation or some other element that might come around so making sure that we're really connected and the language is similar so we're taking a lot of word policy and dumping it right into the handbook you're not cms but i think i brought this up last month so this isn't really towards you but honor roll like i got a twitter feed from cms that their star awards went out um but nothing was mentioned of honor roll and i know that's in the handbook that they do on a role but i really think that's very bad that we don't show or showcase those students at cms um especially because you know up to seventh grade we do yeah i mean i know pk has like different levels and obviously in high school it's high school so so and the reason i was told that they don't do it is somewhat social emotional that there are a lot of kids that didn't make it so they didn't want those kids to feel bad so they just stopped doing it um there's truth to that or not i guess nobody's here from cms but um dr stern and myself spoke with the building administration it's our understanding they are going to be doing uh the honor roll for this year this week on wednesday so it is supposed to be what is it this week for their headquarters the honor roll for eighth grade that is an expectation yeah but quarterly they should be done yeah but they haven't it's good that they're doing it finally now so hopefully they really like these people have done it for yeah she won't be on there for the record but that's so not right oh my goodness and she's watching right now she's gonna be wrong thank you thank you thank you thanks guys appreciate it very much thanks dr rob all right next we have the enrollment report enrollment report is taken from may night you can see that last year we were in 4232 students as we said right now we're 4 652 students which means that we continue to see the rapid growth that dana was talking about earlier with the housing developments and then also with our enrollment students from where we were here i think the other thing that's interesting here we know that uh 2021 our enrollment went down primarily because some people chose to keep their students at home or take them to other schools or do other means so one of the things that todd and i spoke about today because we keep talking about the enrollment growth and how do we manage uh some of the growth in terms of our elementary school middle school and high school we know that we're going to be in trouble shortly at the high school level just with enrollment as you watch these classes come through in a few years if you look at the growth between 1920 to 21 22 which was the year pre-covered we went on a march of 20 to this year we had almost a 21 percent increase in enrollment um and when you look at our housing projections and see what's coming through i think we're in for another big move again for next year so i do think we're going to be tackling things as a board and as a community uh relevant to you know the enrollment how we're going to manage uh some of these uh student populations that we're going to see coming into our district it's a pretty large increase when you think about it for two years yeah all right next to high school graduation this thursday high school graduation is this thursday um packets of information were provided uh to every board member i know our seniors are excited we were at high school earlier this morning we're in the incubator classroom i was talking with a senior who's going to be going university of iowa he's all excited tomorrow's the practice and then graduation thursday night so a good group of graduates coming on up and that will be at the convocation center and it will be streamed live for for anyone who would like to view it i hope i have a quick question on the um the commencement uh booklet like last year we uh recognized the students that were graduating with honors and with high honors in the booklet but this year we're not here well go ahead it may be because we're doing chords different for colored chords my guess is based on the cord colors that kids will be wearing this year they'll have them stand because as they're coming down walking they'll we have different colored cords to represent certain things that is correct very cool okay all right we have capital projects update director holloway is here second part of the um monthly update um country trails and prairie knolls the cafeteria updates are ahead of schedule we had a little setback at pk but we gain momentum the weather's cooperated so it's looking like the week of may 23rd we'll start the breakthroughs um into the existing building moving relocating windows that we're reusing and breaking through those structures so we're in really good shape there we're going to be getting the bids out next week we finally got the drawings completed for the prairie view parking lot expansion and then for the ct um entry modification that we're doing this summer so those bids will be going out next week so with any luck we'll we'll push our construction manager and we'll bring bring those to the board in june um we're currently those are out we're working on the details with the affected municipality so that was one of the delays from our engineers and also forthcoming will be the lilly lake generator bid for the grant that dana received and then we'll be tying in pv and hpt that equipment is now 18 to 24 months to receive those generators so we'll probably be looking to do the infrastructure we'll put the bids out this summer we'll probably do that work over winter break next year and expecting those units to arrive 18 to 24 months later then the final bid that will go out in june will be for the transportation and maintenance facility that will be a project to relocate the um office space on central campus um out of cms and out of their current trailer uh that facility will be uh built in late october and then all the interior work will be completed over the winter so we'll occupy that uh the following summer some other summer work we're knocking some things off the capitol plan that we started uh started the year before i started so we've been working on about nine years now um we're going to be doing some flooring uh replacement at prairie view and hbt some hvac upgrades some equipment that we haven't done over the last couple years we're catching up on some of that at the high school in a prairie view and then we're gonna uh all the new seal concrete or asphalt we've done over the last few years we're going to get all that seal coated we're also going to start knocking off some of the projects on our 10-year health life safety that we brought to the board a few months ago so we're going to start whittling that list down of our high priority projects we'll get some of those done this summer we're still working with our architect on what that uh list will look like but we'll start getting into that this summer any questions about anything awesome thank you thank you thank you all right athletics and activities update do we have anything good if you're into diversity could not join us um we do have the handouts that we put out uh for everyone a couple highlights for baseball is that we finished seven and nine in the conference and we will um central host the class 3a regional and we'll play glenbard south on may 26th and then the softball program oh boy it was as everyone knows it was a cold wet spring but yet they were able to make it through the season placed third in conference and the varsity earned the number two seed in the maple park super regional which will be played next week at woodstock north high school then um girl soccer finished four on five in conference play and our boys track program continues to be strong central is back-to-back fox valley uh conference champions and the closest team to to score against us was huntley um and they were down 30 points from us so they did very well this also marks the 12th consecutive year as conference champions for for boys track of note evan millbrand who was a senior uh and disabled was able to compete um in an assisted race uh in the 100 yard and we believe he will he will compete again uh this upcoming wednesday and we believe that evan and other student athletes will qualify for state great so you know just talks to strength and perseverance and um just overcoming then girls track uh ihs ihsa sectional at genoa kingston and we did really well there and we have um qualifiers for the girls track team and they will be competing at the state meet and then this weekend on saturday the service and diversity club co-hosted our color run where they received um where they were raising money for the national alliance for mental illness and so going to a great cause and that was well attended as well another thing is i just received this today so it's for an overnight trip uh the board will approve the overnight trip which will have already occurred at the june meeting but since the i didn't have 48 hours for posting we can't approve it tonight so it's coming to you just so you're aware of it as a board it'll come back to you in june for approval okay yeah pk did a great job at the track meet so did cms in west chicago good so they had a great great run and coaches were awesome so there's a sidebar nice longest track meet ever at least i got a good burn yes yeah no kidding you still got that color don't you right the girl's one section i believe nice yeah they did a really nice job the coaching staff was excellent and supportive so hats off to both schools next is the board of ed meeting dates for 2022.
