there were two community emails sent out with the links commissioners i believe you have those links to you'll have the opportunity to attend those however please do register in advance i believe you have to register to get the link i'd like to uh congratulate the school 17 arts integration team they're really excited they've been invited back to princeton university this summer [Music] to participate in the program sponsored by njpsa and the dodge foundation the team is excited to continue their mission of empowering students to build upon their strengths through art infused project based learning across the curriculum so basically they take art they don't just utilize art in the art classroom they're utilizing art in every subject area and there's a lot of research that has shown it truly benefits academic achievement for students so the arts integration team at school 17 is catherine chidiax devin defalco francis carlo jonathan feig victoria minnick along with clifton's arts integration coach peggy principal laura zagorski and our supervisor of the arts jason leschwitz have fun in princeton i don't think i was invited are you invited let me invite him i might just roll up on him uh also school 17 started a new program this year called the k kids many of you have probably heard of the kiwanis club the kay kids are like the junior kiwanis and they're a service-based organization and this year um the k kids at school 17 have participated in the thanksgiving food drive to help families in need and clifton they also made cards for children who were in hospitals throughout the country and most recently they held a pop tab collection and donated all the tabs to the ronald mcdonald house which is really a great cause they really love helping others and they've done a great job and i foresee that expanding to other elementary schools in the future i'd like to give a shout out to school five also who this past month took part in the american heart association's kids heart challenge under the leadership of their amazing phys ed teacher mr john silva so during phys ed the students would participate in jumping hopping leaping activities and they learned about the importance of taking care of their hearts through physical activity eating healthy and limiting soda and sugary drinks and salt as i'm reading this i'm starting to feel really bad about myself and avoiding smoking but that's that's one good thing i'm all right one for five oh wait maybe two for six and kindness so research has shown being kind is good for your heart if you learn nothing else tonight let's let's learn that um the students also pledge to to be to be kind and to move more and as a result of their pledges they the students at school five raised over five thousand dollars five thousand one hundred and sixty two dollars crushing their goal of three thousand dollars um and they really surpassed their goal because there was one student a kindergarten student by the name of kyra rios who raised two thousand one hundred and nineteen dollars by herself kindergarten that student's gonna be something it's wonderful i think i think maybe we'll have to invite her to a future board meeting get her started young and so the culmination for the kids is mr silva being a good sport we'll be taking a pie to the face in front of the entire school next week but you know it's like good the kids don't like to they don't want to pie the teachers that they love they want to buy the teachers that they don't like but i can't imagine there's many that they don't like so maybe i'll take a pie in the face so they did a wonderful wonderful job over at school five congratulations to those students i'd like to uh inform the board that at our next meeting we will have our governors educator of the year the teachers of the year recipients from each school here to receive a small little token of our appreciation and also the educational service professionals of the year will also be here also at our next meeting our high school robotics team will be coming to do a a small demonstration in here and weather permitting they've asked permission to do something out in the parking lot as long as they're not blowing something up i'm okay with that so that should be kind of exciting next month at our board meeting this morning i had the pleasure of going to barnes and nobles in clifton and clifton commons to see our fifth grade safety patrol students as they embarked on their washington dc trip we had five buses of students faculty parents staff members and they even though it was raining it was a miserable weather morning the kids were so so excited this is the end of my third year as superintendent and it's the first washington dc trip because of the pandemic so kids were happy to you know kind of get back to doing something normal and they were really really very excited to go away on an overnight trip and i know that's a big clifton tradition and there was a lot of parents there a lot of community members there to see the students off it was just really nice to see it's just a wonderful wonderful community that we have here in clifton and then finally um if we had a student of the month here tonight um chloe who um in her little biography that was read mentioned that she's going to be enrolling in the early college program at clifton high school next year as a junior today we had 12 clifton high school seniors who graduated from bergen county college with an associate's degree a month before they're getting their high school diploma and i think that's just incredible [Applause] and i'm just thinking you're one of them well we have to sing your praises hold on we you should get a round of applause yeah you know what maybe would you like to could we take a picture because we're going to celebrate you we're going to blow you up on social media and and everything the other ones will invite them next time [Music] i know you were there taking pictures let's take why don't you come up here because i want to try to get everybody in can you just like kind of stand there and just yeah just stand just stand among us well if i stand up there's gonna and then and we'll all just give a thumbs up or something this is really impromptu come on we'll all get together [Laughter] i love an impromptu celebration anybody have cake so i would like to take a minute and read all the names of those students and forgive me i have to look at my phone because i have it on my uh in my text message uh so congratulations to zaina alamari ishmael alvarez billy de leon amman gefor sarah haberhamschen laith hassan evelyn kroczek how was that janina good very good thank you natalia ledesma angelo ovalle kathleen rossi amina shana and ariana vasquez so to think at 17 or 18 years old these students haven't graduated high school they're going to graduate high school in a month and already have two years of college under their belt and their parents are saving a ton of money parent yeah well no you have to be you have to be 20.

i'll make that motion everybody scott wait a second at least a second thank you thank you right that concludes our action items we're on to discussions uh the facility study is first um i will say that we've sent out uh i got packets of informations from the architects um mr reeves is sent them out to the departments and so what they have are questions and the questions um include you know how many classes you need for graduation and it talks about programmatic stuff and then there's actual pictures in there of various like kitchens for our home act department you know or shop departments and and science labs and things of that nature it's for the teachers to then give comments on and as we start reviewing the high school um needs assessment so what we're at right now is that we've got surveys for every department math english fine arts at our high school for the teachers to look at and answer questions as to what they would want with a dream school you know what it gives them the opportunity to be able to state also you know what is it that our school right now is lacking that they would really like to see and so that's going to be a information gathering and hopefully in the summer we'll be able to share that with the board as far as where we are with that um but we are moving forward with the facilities i've not heard anything regarding our discussions with the cities and i know that we sent letters we wrote a letter the city wrote a letter talking about route three ultimately we would love to see a third lane on route 3 between bottom uh avenue all the way up to sandbank because of the stuff that's going at 11 south it really a third lane there and all the way to sandbank would make a lot of sense a turn in and a right in right out of the high school parking lot off of three would also be something that we're pining for we believe that that would help the transportation at that location enough that um expanding the school because we are we're at the point where we're probably going to expand that school so um would that be a stoplight in between the middle school and mcdonald's no so what it would be is it you could only go right in so it would not be a stop light it would just be a pull in and a pull out kind of like if on on route three there's one at main street coming out of home off of main street and staying in the right lane yeah but there's a light there yeah i know there's a light but yeah i'm thinking of down in waterloo there's a uh when you turn right there's a a right in right out just uh past the by a gas station in waterloo on route three um yeah gateway fs thank you has a right in right out which is what we'd be looking at where there's no light but it pulls in and out um that's the example we're looking at when i dot doesn't really like write in writes outs but there is one so it's possible and for our school safety i think that that's important so but those are the two issues that we're moving forward on it's not going at the speed i would like but it's moving forward excellent thank you for that our next item is individual board member comments does anybody have anything this evening i attended the middle school the sixth seventh and eighth grade choir concert last week i do want to give a shout out to sarah mcginthy she did a great job with the students even though they had technical difficulties but she got through it and it was it was a very good concert and i did speak to her at the retirement thing yesterday so and she did say that it would be something that could get accomplished over the summer changing out the the boards i guess it is it's yeah what what has happened is is we've have um when they do the plays or a lot of the concerts people come with their own sound board and so when we did the upgrades at the middle school i i we need to just purchase a sound a sound boy well and then what will happen the sound board it's it's there's actual issues okay she thinks middle school is you know it's getting some updates technology's changed a lot since well she said it might be like the wiring in the ceilings that needs to be replaced and things like that so it could be a big project that we might want to look at sooner than later maybe somebody don't put them on their wish list their dream list we had some work done on it with um um so i'll reach out to iron iron studios iron iron man studios because they did some work on it we one of their fathers is a middle school and so we had some work done on it so i'll reach out and find out what didn't get done and get that fixed perfect anyone else all right board president's prerogative um last month i kind of had a little speech or a little education session on why the board can't make or it's not appropriate for the board to make comments on public or reactive public comments again we're we're a body our individual opinions don't really matter it's only as a group that we can take action and do things this this month i'd like to kind of expand on that a little bit and explain how that we have to conduct the business of the district so most of our discussions in fact almost all our discussions have to be in public so we can't just get together and have these conversations and come up with secret evil plans and and do things like that everything we have to do and has to be out in the open in fact when i became president i added the section you i saw with individual board member comments because we need a place where we can bring things up that aren't on the agenda or or on not everybody's mind and really share and collaborate so everything we do has to be in public if more than two board members are present we can't discuss school business whatsoever now we can all get together and have dinner or whatever but school businesses is off limits when it when it does that way we have a lot to do with our due diligence i mean we're running a 24 20 24 million dollar organization here and it does take a lot of due diligence to do our job and perform our our duties correctly um that's why one thing we do is if you notice a lot of the comments we have a committee for this or a committee of that we take couple board members we bring in outside people we try to get together and spend the time to really dig into issues and make sure that we come up with the right decision the the matter or the business of the board is absolutely everybody's business in this community however as a 24 million dollar company organization whatever you want to call it we also have people and these these people are employees as much as everybody has a right to know the district's business they don't have the right and these people have a right to privacy so we respect people's privacy and that's why we're unable to comment on certain things these things are handled in executive session just like individual students employees legal matters they're kept confidential because of the sensitive nature of the issue i love transparency i would like to sit here and tell you every reason for every decision we ever make um but it's just not possible and and i'm sorry for that um where else was i going with that so anyway um like i said you know i know we have some controversial decisions that we have to make i know they're not popular um there are we do listen i think one of the the strengths of this board is we do listen to the community i get stopped a lot at dinner grocery store pulling up my gas whatever and i have a lot of conversations with people i listen to all points of view you know and i appreciate amber coming out and speaking tonight that that really means a lot and uh i'll take you up on that invitation i'll go to the middle school and spend a day with you guys so careful what you wish for i'll do it um but yeah it's we there's no one here that is against any teacher or anything else we want the best for the district plain and simple you know and and uh unfortunately when we do have decisions to make we're not going to make everybody happy we understand that we're doing the best we can nobody up here is paid there's a lot of mechanisms in place that we can't make money off our decisions we can't you know there's there's our board policies are very strict and everybody abides by them so there's very nice arrangements already set up to ensure that we do the right thing we absolutely support the teachers we appreciate what you guys do i have a lot of admiration and i honestly i don't think i could do the job so i take my hats off to all the teachers and we very much want to support the teachers administration and the entire district and that's why we're here but but you're right there's been a rift and i would like nothing more than to find a way to bridge that and get everybody together because we're on the same page we're on the same team we all want to have the same goals sorry my little soapbox on that so but again i appreciate you coming out of amber and speaking it was an excellent speech i appreciate that one other thing too is they brought up the uh middle school play which i understand we had buckets due to a real leaky roof that's absolutely so yes yeah exactly so uh again another committee a couple board members we got together and we're looking at things and and a resolution for the roof so as you know we have the facilities study coming up so we're anticipating an expense there we'd like to address this roof issue sooner than later there's no reason that a school like this is going to have a leaky roof so we've got to find the best way to do it we've met with some contractors and we're going to send it out for some bids for basically is it a rehabilitation that would you call it a resurfacing yeah or resurfacing instead of replacing the roof and as long as the installation is dry enough you can every 20 years you can resurface a roof correct which would save a ton of money for the district and accomplish our goals so we're looking at that we're going to get some biz again i just want to be upfront with everybody and let you know what's going on kind of behind the scenes that we can um and that is pretty much it for me so so i appreciate every indulge me for for that so we would be going into executive session and then our last item is we will be going into executive session for the purposes of appointment employment compensation discipline performance or dismissal of a specific employee of the public body or legal counsel for the public body including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity and to discuss student disciplinary cases pursuant to five ilsc 2c9 there will be no action out of the executive session everybody's welcome to return when we do free adjournment um probably be very uneventful but uh you're always welcome to join us so with that i'd entertain a motion to adjourn into executive session excuse me i'll make that motion thanks scott have a motion second second at least a second roll call please tammy hines yes andrea corey yes craig meyer yes scott middle pam all right lisa schumacher yes tyson search yes all right we are adjourned into executive session thank you all right we are back in in regular session we have no action items as a result of our executive session and with that i would entertain a motion to adjourn so moved scott thank you do i hear a second second at least a second all in favor aye aye any opposed no extensions that concludes our main evening thank you very much you

do you have a motion to approve the modified lease agreement between brown county school corporation and human services as presented i summoned any discussion this is um the lease agreement with head start going over to esc and um we just needed to add office space so i thought we approved that last month we did we needed to amend it to include an office space which changed the price per month okay and but the space was already there yes okay so we didn't have to reconfigure that any other discussion we'll call carol yes amy yes yes stephanie yes uh motion carries thank you thanks i have the recommendation of approval of a non-standard course for human anatomy at brown county middle school do you have a motion to approve the non-standard course for human anatomy at the middle school any discussion why are we having a non-standard course this so there are um there's a waiver by the doe that we have to have they've changed the law that we have to have now board approved for us to be able to teach human anatomy at the middle school level so in order for us to be able to upload the waiver to the doe for three year we have to have it board approved yeah okay and is that going to be is that part of project leave the way with mr roush or is no no it's just a separate science class because we just really have don't have a lot of science electives so it would be just an elective yes okay all right any other discussions will call carol yes amy yes sticky and stephanie yes but she carries thank you i have the recommendation to approve the retirement notice of susie watson effective at the conclusion of the 2021-2022 school year a motion to approve the retirement notice for susan blossom at the end of this school year 21 22.

i do want to mention this specifically because there's been a dramatic change in this in that the csde also supported districts with culturally responsive learning in that in team module 5 teachers are given a scenario where how you might respond and this is for our beginning teachers it's an induction program and districts have options as to how we participate in it in bolton we started a few years ago where every other year all staff members get to participate in this conversation so it's a reminder of how important we are as educators and how really keeping the forefront uh the best practices for dealing with all of our students so while the new teachers get specific pd all of our teachers get to participate in this particular module uh since 2020 into our new strategic plan we've continued much of before but there's been some more specific work uh we've had world events where staff asked for book studies we continued our work with diversity equity inclusion our lmc uh teachers both buildings or both librarians have worked with their association and equity audit for ongoing understandings and they are a great resource for all of our teachers we've attended very specific institutes and with equity work being embedded in all of our new learning the important piece with this in bolton when we think about equity we're not just talking about racial equity we need to think about all students and that's really very important for us to highlight and so this is not a one and done deal this is about having conversations continuing our learning and making sure that this work is deeply embedded in everything we do because we have to do what's right and best for all kids i don't know where i got that line from but it is embedded in my soul and it really is uh what we need to um what's really at the basis of all of this work so again as you can see trauma-sensitive practices certainly we've heard that in the news but also just so we're also doing it sel um and then the ongoing el training english learners so what does that look like in the classroom so we don't just adopt any program and i know we try to make these meetings a big overview but we think about these topics when we're picking our resources so uh you know our ready math program is very rich with um resources to help us understand how to best provide instruction for all learners likewise the reading and writing workshop approach has a very long history with culturally responsive practices even back to the 1990s so that's taking us way back to way back and you know just this idea where literature is our our way to experience the world our windows our mirrors our sliding glass doors and i'm not going to i'm going to have to look because you know i'm talking fast and trying to give you as much information but it was really um dr rooney rudin sims bishop who really got that concept going and has been the foundation of work and sometimes we don't mention it because really this practice has been around and one of the challenges that we always have to remember as educators things become embedded but sometimes we have to get back to the roots as to why we do these things so really our our strategic plan allows us to always revisit the important conversations uh for that uh again listing the different curricular implications that we've seen how we've changed our book talks the choice of the second step program to support the students with sel and again any time we make a major uh text selection resource selection this is considered at both levels and then at the high school we have other opportunities for things such as the unity and connection activities and um certainly we were able to celebrate a few years there when the computer science program was new and the state celebrated us for really promoting women and girls in the computer sciences so again this work does not escape any of us and over the next i'm not going to read all of the next two slides so at bcs the programs are more universal things such as the ready math program our workshop approach and and resources at the high school it's more course embedded so i'll chatter just a little bit and let you peruse uh what the teachers have chosen to share about ways they're making very conscious efforts and this is not an all-inclusive list please by any means but these are some ways in which teachers are highlighting um some of our marginalized voices or coming into ideas and so that we we provide an accurate picture for our students and making sure we're representing all of our students in a way that they can access materials and ideas so next slide mr miceli and i think the only subject area i did leave out was our pe and health department certainly this is a topic that does come up in health uh um again not having an academic leader i didn't have somebody to lean into for this but certainly you know there is plenty here for us to consider and i do thank uh the board by my subcommittee for asking questions and making sure that we are thinking about all of our students because again um i said it earlier this evening and i'm very i feel honored to be able to end my career in a district where students all students are welcomed and held to an expectation so they can succeed and enjoy a life that is um ahead of them so thank you for everybody's support i don't believe do we have anything else at the next slide i'm not sure i don't think we do for that for that so our last goal resource stewardship i may turn over to the superintendent because this really is her purview but certainly all of us this is a team effort so with that i thank the board profusely for your time happy to answer questions after this about any piece i presented um but that concludes my very long report and maybe last time thank you sarah very much so as the board knows we have had an ongoing budget process that begins in september um we have done pre and post covert analysis of our programs technology and other resources that was done back in the fall we do an annual review of purchased resources that's an ongoing thing that we do we do do zero-based budgeting we have applied for and continue to receive grants uh each year and you know do our very best to be good stewards of the community's money for sure any questions chris i i don't have a question i just wanted to appreciate or express my appreciation uh for sarah i've been fortunate to be a member of the curriculum subcommittee since i joined the board over many years ago and as a new board member uh being able to ask many many questions of sarah and have really thoughtful discussions with her um has really helped me learn um so much about the education process and it's been really my pleasure to to be able to work with her over these last last years so all the best on your retirement sarah and thank you thank you chris appreciate that it's been a pleasure working with you anybody else i'd just like to stop the second what chris has just said and just say sarah it's also been a pleasure working with you and i'm just so happy to see how the curriculum and instruction in bolton has been implemented because and designed because it really does follow excellent practices and um and i know i think i know and um so i i do want to express my appreciation for everything that you do and how you've been a real leader in the school district so thank you thank you ria it's been great working with you and it's so much fun talking about educational things with you and thank you for your resources i think chris and ria said a lot but we have to repeat you are just amazing we are going to miss you you've been quite an asset to the school district thank you sue agree with what everybody else said we haven't worked together directly too too much but uh i can feel your impact through the successes of the students so enjoy your retirement thank you thank you appreciate it ben and thank you everybody that's good thank you thank you um there'll be more commentary about sarah's retirement at the june meeting um i will not be making commentary this evening because i need to get through the rest of this meeting tonight if that's okay uh because i'm gonna have a hard time at the shoot meeting i can tell you that so that concludes our report this evening sarah thank you very much joe darrell thank you all very much chair o'neill it's all yours sir thank you everybody uh we don't have any unfinished business tonight um we'll move on to new business we have resignations we do i have a few to report on this evening um special education teacher adam jodine has uh along with paco ruiz and food service manager jackie o'brien have resigned um adam and paco will finish out the year with us i would like to thank them for their dedicated service to the bolton public schools and they will be greatly missed thank you we have a new course next that is ece elementary discrete mathematics yes boy i thought it was done renee midford was supposed to be presenting this course this evening and so mr miceli i might be leaning into you a little bit to make sure i don't miss anything with this so we did present a new course proposal to the curriculum subcommittee at our meeting for the high school to add an elective a uconn ece course in elementary discrete mathematics this course uh like i said earlier a staff member renee midford has to have special certification and she when she was at a ap statistics meeting she was listening to the requirements for this course and it was all of two different two additional units compared to um our contemporary math topics course and so she asked hey can i add and they can extend a course that we already have that is board approved it does not require a textbook it has an online resource and it does add two extra units that and at a faster and more uh intense or more rigorous topics for the college credit and will be available as a junior elective and is one that guidance will be able to look at us once this course gets into our cycle for students having an additional math ap opportu or and math ece opportunity as well did i miss anything mr miceli or any of my fantastic job as always oh thank you so we're hoping for course approval tonight everybody so i can make a motion to approve the ece elementary discrete mathematics course chris and sue do we have any more questions or commentary about this course i'd just say uh again uh thank you to ms midford for recognizing that this would be a relatively easy course to add and would be of great benefit to our students and just taking the initiative to get get certified i think it's a great great addition for for our high schoolers so thank you i'd just like to echo chris also that uh you know that i love minimal budgetary impacts extra courses and i also love more math courses uh so great job um all those in favor of the motion please say hi [Music] abstaining i think that was everybody um next we have a first read on grade three to five spelling program sunday essentials yes and that is not a typo it is sunday essentials sunday essential spellings uh it's been a while since we have updated our spelling program currently we are using the scott forestman reading street program and would like to update to a more relevant program that is aligned with what we know about instructional practices for early literacy word work vocabulary development it's not just learning a list of words to memorize it's embedded in supporting both reading and writing so our english language arts committee at the elementary school did do a comparison of three programs and settled with this program we do have familiarity with the sande spelling program because we do use some of the resources in our intervention program which makes another an additional alignment uh for all learners with this the program we knew this was a program that we would like to consider updating the funds for this already are allocated in a grant so again that is a impact a financial impact that we have already accounted for in our grant programs so this evening we would like to propose a first read and for the community should they want to preview any piece of this would need to contact me at the board of ad so i can make arrangements for that thank you very much we make you made you work hard tonight going out last time um okay is there any questions about this all right uh do we have any future business no all right uh then at this time i'm looking for a motion to go into executive session to discuss the superintendent's evaluation and also to invite superintendent hecht still moved and thank you sue and maria any questions all those in favor of the motion please say aye aye all right uh recording stopped we went to executive session thank you everyone else for coming this evening

is there a second to the motion tim is there any discussion uh ant go ahead just a quick question uh probably for jeff um is there a reason have we ever discussed having um the minutes of our meetings on the consent calendar not that i recall i mean i think they could be part of the consent calendar you know carol and i can look into that discuss it with tony i thought we had um talked about the various things at one point i remember yeah talking about the consent calendar definitely yeah but i i don't recall off the top of my head if that was part of it and you know carol and i can certainly throw that out i'm just i'm just wondering if there's a faster way to do it or or if there's a re or if there's a good reason to have the minutes as a separate item maybe there is i don't know so we'll look into it yeah definitely explore i say consent and keep it simple yeah amen um any additional uh discussion additions subtractions okay um oh yes go ahead yeah um forgive me i did notice um under the curriculum report for the um april 21st meeting it said in miss ham's absent ms okay it was anne who never mind i take it back i was i was miss kevin hanlon and i was gonna say miss hanlon never mind i misread it entirely forget it oh okay and miss hamilton will be appreciative too make the minutes all right uh any any other discussion seeing none um i'll read the motion one more time uh move that the cheshire board of education approves admit approves the minutes from meetings held april 21st 2022 and may 5th 2022 all in favor it is unanimous thank you um madam secretary is there any correspondence i have received no correspondence thank you and now it is that time of the evening for the superintendent's report i know you've been waiting with baited breath on this one but i planned on sharing much of it about school modernization which i've already covered but i do want to speak really briefly about covid19 as we know there's been a significant spike uh particularly in the northeast and we're not immune to that there's uh the numbers have increased in our schools uh we're seeing a pretty significant uptick the i guess the silver lining if there is one is that we haven't seen much in the way of substantial impact and illness from our kids but it does mean that they miss a significant amount of time and it and it can certainly be substantially impactful more so for adults unfortunately as we're seeing but um there is an uptick i would strongly recommend you know that families consider masks our staff consider masks we've communicated that at the very least take advantage of the testing that we have available next wednesday are hundreds of eighth graders about 288th graders will be traveling to washington dc we're going to require that they all test before they leave for dc um that's a requirement from dc actually that people travelers their tests before arrival but i think it's just a way to try and protect our kids and community as a reminder if you look at the [Music] board of ed website there is a covid update page there that i personally update the number of positive students every day uh so i remain connected to the trends that are occurring in the district and we have seen a significant uptick uh particularly cheshire high after um prom and things like that so you know i appreciate that we're all coveted weary but i would ask people to try and remain vigilant if you're symptomatic please test stay home and certainly wear a mask if you're symptomatic and or if you're positive certainly you know don't come out in public so you're not jeopardizing other stuff just a quick update there um jeff as far as the testing goes for the uh washington ship i'm i'm assuming that we are insured if let's say half the class tests positive or something like that how does that yeah so you know we've been covered through um nation's classroom is our tour provider they do a great job and they've been really flexible and working with us and so yes there is you know protection there for families but and it is a take-home test you know i so appreciate the partnership we have with our emergency services director and cheshire jack kasner the fire chief and beth crowley the librarian the the library director i called her today asking for tests i was able to swing by pick them up in an hour and you know because they are also giving tests out to people in the community if anybody needs one they can stop there if you need one for your child or um you know just call our school nurse and we'll send them home whatever you need thank you um sam first i was just going to ask about distributing the test kits and i know that the government just published that they want you to order tests online as well yeah they're available through the government online um for the dc trip we have a dc trip meeting friday afternoon we'll be handing them out there to kids to take home um but it also through the nurse if you need thanks adam um yeah so one of the things that you've done in the past at least going back six months for the younger kids i don't know in high school i don't recall when you were doing it for the high school but you were offering the booster clinton or vax clinics right um so just an observation if you are if you're thinking about a booster clinic considering the school year is almost over it might be beneficial to at least consider doing a booster clinic in august rather than say now when i believe it's available what i saw on the news um you talked to health professionals i'm not telling you what to do you just want it as an idea yeah it's not uh i don't think it was fd it was either it meant the first level of authorization but it needs one more authorization i think before it can be administered is where i believe it is today okay uh the five to eleven um we you know as a school system we don't necessarily offer them i certainly communicate sure families if they choose to and that should be done with consultation with your physician um you know we're just making it available as a public service sure in cooperation with chester cop yeah okay yeah i understand what you're saying because you know i did have this conversation with our nursing director today about her decision um or you know her recommendation to hold off on vax on getting a booster until the fall just to be or at least mid-august because uh really takes a couple of weeks post inoculation to um be fully protected and unfortunately it looks like the way things are going covet may hang around even longer than we anticipated so yeah no i mean i think the vaccines at the vaccines as far as i'm concerned it's working for me the booster and everything but i'm also not convinced that these things can go on in perpetuity every three or four months so i'm just thinking delaying it out until then could be beneficial from a teaching in school perspective um and oh have you had any conversations with anybody i'm curious the new from what i recall last winter the omicron and the delta and they came to the experts came to the conclusion that the masks that most people wore not n95s weren't really all that useful do you happen to know if this current variant or is it somebody told me it's the old variant that came back i don't know do you know if n95s are like the mask to wear or do the other mass actually have a benefit if you happen to know just from talking to the public health people um we've received information about the validity of masks you know throughout the pandemic being incredibly beneficial each level of mask having a different layer in protection certainly n95 being the gold standard for that surgical mask being quite high you know and then just to decline down to the cloth mask better than nothing but um in terms of current data i don't have that okay all right thank you can you um give an update on how those metrics that we adopted in february apply and is there any chance they're going to kick in so the metrics that we um adopted in february were uh basically dissolved in late march when we had met those metrics the vaccination rate the positivity rate uh case rate and as things have evolved the proliferation of home testing that doesn't get reported to the positivity rate case rate um the vaccination rate has been fairly stagnant over the course of the last you know probably six months or so so they're not really as germane in the um the addition of new treatments for those with covid those different variables they're looking more at things like case rate or a hospitalization right now and believe it or not sewage runoff to determine the amount of covid in the community those things have increased the you know you see the hospitalizations have increased the and the so that is out there that's the reality i'm also sensitive to the emotional impact of um re-masking for kids with three weeks of school left and so as of today you know i don't think we're inclined to move in that direction um you know i think there would have to be really significant medical direction urgency to mandate it and that hasn't happened to to mandate there is the recommendation as i said earlier i would recommend based on the conversations i have with our medical professionals that you do consider masking but you know at this point still very much a personal decision to follow up doesn't um so the executive the governor's executive order whatever remnant there is of it expires june 30th right it says the dph still has some authority authority extended authority but um you know like i said i don't think that they've had there's been zero direction from them that they would be moving or zero indication i should say that they're moving toward a mandate i mean i have a regular meeting with the commissioner of education there's a regular superintendent's meeting every month and that's coming up on friday i'm sure this will be a topic of conversation but i would be pretty stunned at this point to see a directive in that direction can i just go a step further can you tell us anything about more outdoor use at this time of year or yeah it's been a little difficult through the month of you know april and may we've had a lot of rain um but you know as hopefully as things clear up we still encourage folks to head outside for example at the high school i talked to dr gad and we decided to put lunch tables outside which is a break from past practice pre-covered we would never do that because of fear of rodents and things like that but we um we've done that so we are trying to leverage outside space as much as possible particularly now as we're starting to see the increase again thank you i was just wondering if that was part of the conversation again absolutely any additional questions for dr sol okay thank you dr solon thank you um see we have old business there's no old business that i'm aware of um there is no uh chairperson's update um i guess uh before we close i'll just read off uh the upcoming meetings um monday may 23rd we're gonna have a robust policy committee meeting we may have to you know divide that up a little bit um that's going to be virtual now that even though that going forward we won't be able to have virtual classrooms we'll be able to still have virtual meetings so we'll still have virtual public meetings so um that will be live streamed um uh thanks to uh dr solon i think right that's gonna be coming right off your computer that evening um thursday june 9th we'll have a business meeting location to be determined um monday june 13th 7 p.m curriculum committee meeting hummingston boardroom uh tuesday june 14th uh 6 30 p.m policy committee meeting um that may be virtual again we'll see depending on the uh volume of material we're going to be going over and uh thursday june 30 at 7 30 a.m is our uh uh year-end meeting uh in the hummeston boardroom um and it looks like uh cheshire public schools will be closed on may 30th for in observance of memorial day um i have no uh yes so thank you for making the 23rd virtual but i just want to go beyond that i know we've added some dates for the finance committee meeting in august and just kind of want to propose that to be virtual as well too if at all possible i think perhaps we could work something out okay thank you my second question is um this from last week dr solon um the teacher of the year ceremony just reminded me did we announce one already for the upcoming school year we announced our teacher of the year annually at our convocation ceremony in the fall okay um i would like to entertain a motion to adjourn oh it's that uh second uh well it was kind of a tie sam second uh all in favor all right this meeting is adjourned thank you

nerman nervous feelings of in my arms and hands when i come up here good evening board members superintendent nelson and attendees normally i make a report about the monthly activities and events and give you a student perspective on campus life for this speech my last one here i want to make a report about my high school experience at granite hills high first coming to granite hills high my freshman year i was not only new to the school but new to the district there was no doubt it was very different from a charter school but it only urged me to further my exploration around campus i tried out for soccer cheer track and made teams you may be thinking what else could i possibly do well the next year i went straight into asb and became sophomore vice president an emcee for the pep rallies and i may or may not have been in the cougar suit a couple of times that year we stayed in spring break all the way to august we never really came back in person until later in my junior year and even then we saw a few students who attended at the time we had no idea the kind of impact it would create on us for me during that time i got a job pushed through ap classes became junior president and continued soccer and cheer in the spring as well as athletic training soon enough senior year came right around the corner like racing horses to the finish line at that point i was a senior and still sort of felt like a sophomore but with a deadly case of senioritis going back to school my senior year i admit i kept expectations low because we didn't know if in the next month we would need to shut down once again but we didn't and all we could do was push forward and make things as normal as possible we made it happen with a lot of events and activities at school and saw the most participation in years the campus i once saw a tumbleweed pass through became full of posters for events and friends grouping up to attend them i'm now confident in my favorite memory at granite hills high school and that it was leading my seniors through their final cougar chants at the end of the year pep rally it still astonishes me that the class before the pandemic left nothing but cricket noises in the stands of our pep rallies being that the freshman had been louder than us and now as seniors after the epidemic we delivered roaring thunder filling the gym it confirms to me that the challenges we face these previous years did not stop us from making the most of our senior year and that the classes ahead will follow our attitudes and strive for even better i am overjoyed to announce the new governing council president next year i am confident to say that she will lead this class with the best in favor and most spirit i can't wait to see what she does please welcome ashley guzman [Applause] good evening board members superintendent nelson and attendees um ella has just introduced me but once again i am ashley guzman your 2022-2023 school year granite hills will be brief i hope it will be sorry i hope it will be inspiring now as i begin i would like to thank ella for all she has done as president this past year she has done an amazing job and has given me many great words of advice which i will forever cherish and remember i am aware as i step into this position i am aware of the responsibility it comes with yet i assure you i am ready for it i have begun plenty many events and as and activities for the upcoming school year which i am hoping will bring more spirit from the student body and make our learning place a more enjoyable and welcoming place to be seeing as i have already took part in planning many of our school events and activities in these past three years i am excited that we will have more freedom and how we will be able to execute many of our plans that we have in store now that many of the coveted regulations are being lifted i can assure you that this upcoming school year is going to be remarkable i don't want to give too much away so with that being said thank you board members and superintendent nelson and thank you to the all the wonderful attendees that came in order to support and or i have at least listened can't imagine anything better than this person doing physical therapy for somebody in need she will care for them and always has a smile on her face so i told her my most um memorable time this year was showing up at granite during lunchtime she's on the stage doing a rally and she comes off the stage and comes over and gives me a hug and as the superintendent at a high school that doesn't happen unless it's your own kid and by the way my own kid didn't do it until my second kid did so ella i appreciate you we are so excited that you're moving on to um cal state san bernardino which is my alma mater and so you're going to do great things and i know this so if you'll shake hands i've got a little something for you [Applause] there's an expectation here class of 2022 class of 2026.

please come up to the microphone good evening everybody public border of educational members my name is orienta magaly fernandez and i am a new jersey licensed mt i work in pain management stress reduction i'm a mother of two students from clifton a special needs we have our own story first and anything with all the education i thank all of you to give us the opportunity to to talk in a good hour two thursdays ago i stay until 10 35 the rest of the persons spoke at 11 11 and i believe we deserve respect if you invite us to meeting you should give us the time to talk early i was going home because my children were hungry texting me at 10 35 and i couldn't talk two thursdays ago i listened to ladies here saying that anal sex was an option for not getting pregnant i am asking myself and any of you you would like that your children get this type of lessons your grandkids your kids in the school i have my own story and maybe mr phobes that knows me good can't tell you who i am the things that i leave personally and i can tell you as a matter that i'm not agree with this type of education i grew up with high moral values and i encourage all the parents in youtube in the channel to come all of you are invited to come and sit down this is almost empty we have ladies and gentlemen here that can answer our questions we need to be clear you need to clarify us why we need to talk about sex on a different way to our kids sexual life is important but some topics are horrible i don't want that my 14 year old daughter knows about anal sex i don't want it as well as many parents and i'm working on social media against this i don't like that i'm sincere and maggie fernandez known in my field and i am in facebook writing against this because i have my own story i don't want my daughter learning about sex coming saying that she's bisexual all telling listening kids talking about sex with disrespect we need to be here to show moral values moral values that each one of you get at home is what each one of you were raised different but with moral values that's why you're sitting here because you were educated you never went to school to learn about anal sex or oral sex my apologies if my words are strong but this is what i want to say since two weeks thank you very much [Applause] hi my name is monique shaw i live in clifton good afternoon yeah good evening um so i did not go to school in america i went to school in a different country i had a european-based curriculum and i lived in the caribbean and i am it's very interesting to me to see parents react to the education of their children in this manner i learned about sex in school my teachers did not do any of the ridiculous things that i hear parents talking about discussing various sexual positions and anal sex oral that is not what an sexual education system is about that's not what is taught what is taught however is young girls learning about their bodies how it changes young boys learning how their body changes and how it responds to women and how and they should take care of themselves how to approach it i learned what a yeast infection was as a young woman i learned what a period was i learned the different options for those things i learned the correct name of body parts that i already owned and body parts that my dad and brothers and all the other men i just i find it ridiculous that parents don't want their children to be able to access valuable information parents talk about i don't want my kids coming home saying they're gay what about the kid that has two dads that wants to know that his family is just as recognized as the family that has a mom and a dad what about the kid that didn't come from a pregnant belly the kid that was made that a family went out of their way to go and adopt or to go through a process to bring that child and they have to tell the child that story does that child not deserve to learn this is how families are made as well i understand that in america and this is just from an immigrant perspective that there is like this it's like you sexualize things but let's not talk about it it's very confusing for other people that look in just fyi very is but there is this elephant in the room where you don't want to talk about sex among your children but you guys have teen pregnancies up the gazoo in america you have sexual abuse that goes unrecognized children do not have the vocabulary to discuss these things parents are afraid of what their kids could be exposed to how about be welcoming of what your child might be able to tell you okay there is a lot of fear i get it in the unknown a lot of you grew up in a different era where this information was seen as bad or you were seen as dirty for having access to it or that this information was going to taint you in some way but your reality and your world is not the same that your children are going to grow up in you have to prepare them for the world you are leaving behind and while your world you did not need these terms of transgender and sexual orientation and gay and let you didn't need those vocabularies because it wasn't accessible your children will be at a significant disadvantage coming from a small town in new jersey that didn't teach them anything about the outside world when they try to go out there and make it in a big city you think someone can from clifton after not getting a proper sexual education and being exposed can really navigate certain nuances making it in a amsterdam beach i think they'd show up there and like you think they'd be okay in the culture shock of the rest of the world if their entire life they weren't even told what else might be out there okay thank you you as parents will still have the ability to navigate these discussions that's what the school is there for it starts the discussion it gives them the information and you can help them understand and navigate it do not put your kids at a disadvantage do not take this away from them and don't live in fear of new things okay thank you very much thank you good evening everybody mark princiac holly street clifton first of all i want to congratulate the uh the students that graduated with an associate's degree tremendous accomplishment my prediction is that all of them will be very successful in their futures in terms of their career i also want to commend mr abu drabo and anyone else responsible for rescheduling these uh presentations regarding the comprehensive health that was presented today they're originally scheduled to overlap with this meeting so it's kind of frustrating to see that when you're trying to see these things so and uh thank you to the administration for rescheduling that moreover while i was listening to the k-5 presentation today regarding comprehensive the health started off by describing teens and sex in a k through 5 lesson what's the most common buzz word i heard misinformation yet the communications that we receive from this district that are commonly sent to parents is comprehensive health yet sex education was described in the lesson so i'm asking you mention all this misinformation why don't you describe the verbatim of the sex education standards with the upgrades with the 2020s and jsls standards more some parents change the world by fighting for their kids what did one parent do she never gave up she gathered her family and friends in an amazing group group parent effort they had 40 plus show up to speak on behalf of the kids there were so many speakers that the board of ed meeting lasted until 1am and some schools sadly they claim that that is the law that they have to incorporate into the 2020 sex standards into the curriculum but that's not true schools write the curriculum not the department of education and the board of ed won't go to jail for saying no it's not like how governor murphy was threatening the school administration over their masking policies what is the penalty from the state if the district does not adopt these standards minus four points on their nj sac score so i'm asking this board if someone can explain what a m what a four-point reduction from our school's nj sac score if the new curriculum is rejected to our board of ed commissioners i urge you to have some courage like some other districts i have with me a suggested resolution created created by a wonderful attorney who i believe has a similar similar talent stack to that of our wonderful board attorney the work has before has been performed please consider using it whereas the clifton board of education intends not to adopt the curriculum set forth by the new jersey student learning standards covered under comprehensive health and physical energy physical education 2020 nj sls-chpe whereas should we allow the proposed state curriculum to move forward the impact it would have in classrooms would allow the school district to demonstrate topics inclusive of sexual activity such as oral sex anal sex masturbation and gender to be discussed with children at various grade levels to comply with the curriculum standards whereas the standards set forth are extreme and age inappropriate and was adopted by the state board of education therefore be it resolved by the board of education of the city of clifton shall not adopt the curriculum set forth by the new jersey student learning standards covered under comprehensive health and physical education 2020 nj sls-chpe thank you everybody for your time have a good night everybody and god bless america good night everybody [Applause] good evening tovah felder i live here just piggybacking quickly off of andrew's comments i propose that instead of disciplining mainly girls because they are distracting we discipline the kids who are too distracted to do their schoolwork because of a pair of shoulders i came to talk about the not really new health education standards from the perspective of someone who understands deeply how important it is that we do talk about such inclusion stuff as some background one of my aunts is a lesbian for as long as i can remember i've known that aunt linda and aunt donna were life partners the same way my mom and dad were and because this was always how it was because nobody in my family ever talked about them like it was some kind of shameful secret i never thought of it as anything noteworthy that is why this kind of inclusive education why these updated standards are so vitally important when kids understand that there are all of these different ways of existing and of being a family then it isn't shocking or scandalous when they meet their first openly gay kid or a kid with two moms when they understand that gender isn't necessarily fixed with their genitals then maybe it won't feel like their world is imploding if they realize someday that the gender they were assigned just doesn't feel right for the last 12 years i've been working in a religious school and tutoring privately one of my long time students a few months shy of 13 is preparing to become a bar mitzvah i'll call him josh i've known josh since he was in second grade and in my class for the first time back then he would often come to class with sparkly nail polish and we would compare our painted fingernails we still do that he's just about the sweetest most gentle spirit i've ever met and he knows that i'm talking about him tonight he thanked me for it actually that sweet kid is having an awful year josh lives in a nearby town with a good school district known for their high test scores and their accomplished students as a brown-skinned jew and young gay person who is proud of who he is and who doesn't hide his love of rainbows and the color pink he has not felt welcomed or supported in his district in this good school josh has been bullied by some who have been raised to see him as deviant or somehow unacceptable i'll remind you he's 12 he's a child things have been so hard for him that his family is taking the enormous financial hit of moving him to an expensive private school where he can be himself in an accepting supportive environment and despite this josh is actually pretty lucky most families simply can't afford to make that kind of sacrifice and many kids don't have supportive families for a whole lot of lgbtq kids they just have to suffer through it until they graduate or drop out some like a clifton teen my son knows are literally thrown out of their homes once they tell their parents that they're gay or trans it's really hard to be any kind of a minority and not get to see yourself in the culture around you on tv in songs in the books you read in school as a jew growing up i struggled with this a lot i was one of only three in my whole elementary school and except for a token hanukkah song in december i never saw examples of my own family in the school curriculum my son has struggled with it too even here in a city that is brimming with diversity he's had to deal with kids throwing him the nazi salute and making jokes about burning him up in an oven i'll add that administration was really quick to act when i went to them but it doesn't erase what happened now try to imagine being the child of a gay couple or of actually being a gay child or a trans child or non-binary child imagine that the only time you hear about people like you is when parents get up and tell the entire community that they don't want their kids to even learn that you exist imagine how painful that must be i know that some of you may think that for our youngest students there's just no need to discuss these things they'll learn about it later the trouble is when you fail to acknowledge an entire segment of the population you are implicitly stating that there's something wrong with those people something that makes even talking about them unacceptable that is a terrible harmful message one final thought if you find yourself on the same side of an argument with someone who casually throws around a nazi salute as happened at the last meeting it might be time to really ask yourself if you're on the right side [Applause] anyone else wish to address the board hi good evening pardon i came from work first of all i think it's amazing that you have students that have their associate's degree um definitely going to be taking this back my name is barbara holstein and i am from montague township i am speaking here as a citizen and not as a board member of montague township all right this is a very very nice boardroom certainly uh a lot more than what we have in our gymnasium but i appreciate it i attended a board meeting in gardewood on tuesday and i saw them um one of their board members came to the table presented a resolution got a second on the resolution put it up for discussion and they now have a resolution opposing the adoption of the curriculum that would be in recognition of the state standards interestingly enough the board of at the presentation by the superintendent that night kind of really helped clarify exactly why it's essential that any school district who is interested in protecting all children so while the comments from the ladies here regarding certain groups of children they're very selective to certain groups your job is to protect all children my problem with lbgtqhi whatever is it's missing the h it's missing heterosexual it doesn't address the largest number of population i sat quietly and listened to you i expect you to do the same for me so my point is is that any resolution any decision the due diligence of a school board member is for the whole district no one's coming at you and saying take away your 2019-year 2016 health and physical education curriculum which does have most of the content of the new ones this comes directly from the website so anybody who says that this curriculum is not teaching things isn't reading the actual website from the department of education by the end of grade two list medically accurate names for body parts including genitals i will tell you right now the kindergarten class that i work in they are not capable of doing this because they don't need it they need to learn how to hold a pencil they need to know how to follow directions and their teacher they need to learn how to sit in their seat most of the kids in this classroom actually come from guatemala and honduras they've never even seen the inside of a school building the last thing we need to do is be teaching them how to label genitalia okay now when when then is that appropriate if a child has an issue the child is a teacher notices this i notice it i go to my teacher i work with and i say look you know what i've noticed a couple little things going on here and you know what they do they get the guidance counselor involved they get the people involved to take the child in private and discuss things in private that aren't supposed to be discussed in front of their older other children who don't need to know that private business the second thing down here discuss a range of ways people explain their express their gender and how gender stereotypes may limit behavior those kids that just graduated with those associates degrees they graduated without having this and they all did successfully well new jersey state learning standards describe what students should know and be able to do with the completion of the grades these standards provide the foundation for school district curricula that is used by teachers in the development of their daily lesson plans curricula lesson plans everything in here is going to be filtered down and yes in the classroom the teacher gets a discretion there's not one of you that sits in a classroom not even the superintendent so whatever is said is said directly to those kids and whatever you ask them to do in your direction and your due diligence as a board when you go to adopt this or don't adopt it is going to affect the children in the classroom how that teacher wants to perceive it you have to set the message straight my board's going to be taking this into consideration i think you guys know where i sit on this topic this is absolutely this doesn't belong in our schools what we need to keep doing is what we have been doing being inclusive showing tolerance showing acceptance and continuing to do what we've already been doing we don't need to go to the extremes to keep doing and we already have harassment intimidation and bullying policies we already have all that i wanted to go back to you know no thank you my daughter's pediatrician is gay my daughter's 20 will be 22 in june she's a united states marine when she was 17 she came back from high school she was high school guess what i want to go see dr so-and-so because that's what she wanted to go and and talk to him before she left she went there so she was two years old didn't matter he was gay and there was no rainbows flying in his office he just practiced medicine that's what we need to focus on hi there josh shaw i live in clifton i have two boys in the in school five one's a kindergartner the other's in third grade um my kindergartener does know what a penis is and he knows what a vagina is and he knows how children how babies are made he's been exposed to it because we thought it was important and because he asked the other reason he needs to know what a penis is is because he pees all over the place all right so there's you can't the kids already know what are going what's going on they have access to youtube and honestly we moved to clifton seven years ago and we had the up we had the choice to move a lot of different places we looked at houses and 30 mile radius from harlem where we lived and we chose clifton because of the diversity we literally chose clifton because of the diversity i support the sexual education uh curriculum that's coming into play and honestly if the board were to block something like that i would sell my house and i would take my children out of this school system i would take them out and i think you'd have more people do that as well if children are not getting the education they deserve parents have the opportunity to take their children out of this i believe right they can take their children out but i think it would be detrimental to the entire community if you didn't teach children what was happening they also need to learn to respect each other my third grader we dealt with it today with the guidance counselor and the principal but yesterday my son was punched in the face by a fifth grader he's eight years old and he called him an n-word a kid pun a ten-year-old punched an eight-year-old and put and called him an n-word in his face now they were just playing football on the heist on the playground but these are the type of things where your garwood wherever the hell that's from that's the kind of thing that happens in garwood it's not something that happens in clifton and if we start letting the far right fascism wing of this town or other towns come influence our diverse our diverse town our diverse city excuse me only one person is speaking at the microphone just because i said right far fascist wing that i believe that some of these beliefs are far and fascist that you don't teach children about human reproductive like the entire world the human race would come to an end if we didn't teach children about sex like seriously what are we trying to hide here ma'am this is the last time i'm stopping this if you can't keep your quiet you're going to have to leave the room i don't care who it is he has the floor he's addressing us please keep your comments to yourself while people are speaking thank you can i get my time back there for mr smith thanks um so where was i uh i believe that it's a slippery slope and if you don't teach children reproductive health uh more children won't know how to speak about sexual abuse and and i i just i'm it's really upsetting that this is even coming up in this community honestly i stand with the board and i hope you guys have a strong backbone thank you hi uh i'm lilly d'amato i live here in clifton um i wasn't going to speak tonight but i'm pretty disturbed um so i had a pretty unique educational experience i grew up in massachusetts i had a very jewish elementary in middle school went to catholic school for various reasons for high school um and one thing i i got i went to an all-girls catholic high school and um one thing that they did that i really valued was they had a full-on sex education there this was not a catholic school that was teaching only abstinence we learned about all of the different types of contraceptives we learned about all of it and why and the principal was a nun she was one of the sisters because they knew we were going to do something we were going to figure it out and knowledge is power right so i think that that's important information right knowledge is power the more you know the better right i also want you to really pay attention to who sounds fearful here and who's leading with love right decisions good decisions are not made out of fear right the fear of saying the word penis or vagina or vulva i don't know these are scientific words we're in a pandemic right mr schull talks about you know sexual abuse well if your five-year-old doesn't know the word penis and someone's touched him somewhere and he has no vocabulary for that that happens right that abuse may keep going and i certainly hope for none of that but knowledge is power lead with love right not with fear that's it thanks [Applause] good evening marcia miller clifton i have information from the family watch international organization on comprehensive sex education and the harmful effects on children one it sexualizes children and normalizes child sex and desensitizing children to sexual things may give examples of children having sex or imply many of their peers are sexually active may glamorize sex use graphic materials teach explicit sexual vocabulary or encourage discussion of sexual experiences attractions fantasies or desires two teaches children to consent to sex may teach children how to negotiate sexual encounters or how to ask for or get consent from other children to engage in sexual acts with them three normalizes anal and normal sex introduces these high-risk sexual behaviors to children and may normalize them male 1 vital medical facts such as extremely high stds for oral and anal cancers associated with these sexy i'm sorry these risky sex acts promotes homosexual and bisexual behavior promotes acceptance of and or exploration of diverse sexual orientations sometimes in violation of state education laws may omit vital health information and or may provide medically inaccurate information about homosexuality or homosexual sex teaches children sexual pleasure teachers children about sexual pleasure may tell them they are entitled to or have a right to sexual pleasure and encourage children to seek out sexual pleasure promote solo or mutual masturbation while masturbation can be a part of normal child development encourages masturbation at young ages making children more vulnerable to pornography use sexual addictions or sexual exploitation may describe masturbation or provide instruction on how to masturbate may encourage children to engage in mutual masturbation eroticizes condom use may use sexually explicit models the penis the vagina models seductive role play to promote condom use to children may provide medically inaccurate information on condom effectiveness and omit or de-emphasize failure rates may imply that condoms will provide complete protection against pregnancy as tds promotes early sexual independence teaches children they can choose to have sex when they feel they are ready or they find a trusted partner fails to provide data about the well-documented negative consequences of early sexual debut fails to establish abstinence as the goal fails to establish abstinence as an expected standard for all school-age children may mention abstinence only in passing may teach children that all sexual activity other than unprotected vaginal or oral sex is acceptable even healthy may present abstinence and protected sex as equally good options for children promotes gender confusion promotes affirmation and or exploration of diverse gender identities may teach children they can have change in their gender or identity or multiple genders or may present other unscientific and medically inaccurate gender ideology fails to teach that most gender confused children resolve it by adulthood and that extreme gender confusion is a mental health disorder that can be helped teaches abortion and contraception i won't be able to finish the last few but it is it can be a detriment even to family values and and what's going on in their in their community that they consider to be healthy and and acceptable in their own mind and view thank you [Applause] well good evening i'm losing my voice my name is lori lallam and i'm the president of the clifton education association so first of all i want to thank the board for the two percent the staff is very happy for the kids and the programs that we'll be able to do so really thank you from the bottom of our hearts it's very important now i was sitting here wrestling with the idea of talking about the curriculum now as a teacher in the building and i stand in the hallway and i listen to our students talking about what's going on and i would advise parents and i'm speaking as a parent too right now that look at your computers go through your history files see what your children are doing on your computers check their cell phones they do need this curriculum i've seen things like most teachers have most administrators have and parents really need to know what's going on their children's life and that's all i'm going to say on that part now family watch international through the southern poverty law center sees this group as an extremist group and it's also designed as a hate group their founder is from gilbert arizona their ideology is anti-lgbtq and they have a huge write-up in the law center so it goes on and on about how the divisive the group is and how hateful they are and i know that our board and our staff would never do anything that's hateful to our children here because as a teacher and i know as board that we all treat our students with the same love and understanding that we treat our own kids so i will be glad to share the link with the board tonight thank you very much good evening board victoria manga butler new jersey i'm just coming to talk about the sexual education i think there's a lot of misconceptions going on here and a lot of confusion is what i'm hearing um i don't think we're saying hide it under the rug i don't think we're saying don't tell it don't talk about it a penis or a we're not saying that we're saying at a kindergarten level of a child who's five years old to be taught about masturbation and anal sex at that age is appalling that is totally unacceptable and why are we teaching the school's teaching well a parent should be teaching at home these parents should be teaching their children not our schools so i'm standing against this not only in this uh town but the towns in in all of new jersey and we're going to fight this because i don't think a little child of five years old should be taught about this kind of nonsense this is outrageous anal sex and masturbation at five years old is appalling and i do not accept any of this in the state of new jersey thank you for listening to me good good evening al dubois clifton well the first thing i like to say was that that event tuesday night was outstanding totally outstanding amish is if i pronounce it wrong please don't schlep how she was able to pronounce everyone's name from that list she should get a little award or some kind of recognition because that was amazing and when clifton does something with clifton i think we would be in better shape what i heard tonight from everyone both sides if we would meet personally and unite we're parents or our leaders because you nine are our leaders that we need to help us in this issue we really can't do it getting up here and mounting off and shouting off is not enough we need the leaders to take action and we can come up with our own program that would be dynamic from what i saw tuesday night at that event was outstanding i mean you know and all i didn't hear nothing about state you know i've been coming to meetings only because i keep hearing about the state the state the state mandates for this and the state mandates for that as well we can't we got to do this for the state mandates which is hurting our freedoms which is taking away a lot of liberties but if clifton can do it which i just heard some people say we can i think both sides could even unite some to some degree i mean there is truth about things like menstruation to understand that so you're not shocked at a certain age and other areas that need to be discussed properly and prudently um but you need some guidelines now i listened before we came in to the um to the meeting go to a trusted adult who's a trusted adult i'm going to ask the board tonight to discuss at your convenience privately whatever to look to get some kind of chaplains on staff can be from the various different religions and they're there now when people go through issues young adults go through issues it's called dysphoria it's normal i was just looking it up everybody has it anxiety depression this that it's a mood swing i remember growing up there was girls on our block that were better than the boys i would pick the girls to be on the baseball team the kickball team they were better and they used to beat up the boys but they all grew up to be mothers and the boys who were weaker that were a little chubby and they may have had the little boobs when we went to swimming they became football players that could destroy pick up one hand and throw you across the whole junior wing in the high school so they went through phases and they you need some guidance i ask you to look into having it's called spiritual dysphoria at that age but right away they're grabbing these kids and they're making a gender dysphoria then they're giving them hormones and then we don't know what's happening later on it's spirit they're going through some kind of mental spiritual dysphoria which we don't talk about we're afraid to talk about god the day of prayer those are realities and you know i'm sorry to get up here to always be confrontational but the wall you have here is a confrontational wall and there's an invisible wall and the structure is a structure where there's us against them it may not be because i just saw earlier how he's all acted and you're so personable and at that event which was outstanding i mean beyond you know and he was boasted about it but you should have the state hasn't done anything like that we're number one with that it was beautiful we could be a model we can get a program together that schools would come and say we're gonna adopt clifton's model if we all would meet together forget the zoom let's meet personally and uh talk about it and iron out our differences and then present it together um thank you and god bless [Applause] is there anyone else wishes to address the board chris tamato i live here in clifton i don't have prepared remarks i'm also not going to speak long but i do want to echo a little bit off of what the gentleman who just spoke before me said and that is this situation requires leadership regarding the sex ed curriculum and these people the anger the frustration i can feel it in the room tonight and i'm sure it's this is raging across the country right now in a lot of different ways there's a feeling that we're at a bit of a fulcrum point culturally with big questions what is the role of education public education what is age appropriate these are big discussions that need to be had and it's divisive right now and this situation needs leadership i would suggest that we deal with this locally in the sense that we try to get it together get on the record who supports what what specifically in this curriculum is good bad age appropriate not break it down make it clear involve the community take a stand and let the chips fall where they may when it comes election time because that's well that's democracy but this is in divisive times where big questions are thrust to the forefront is when we need leadership the most so just calling on all of you to take the reins and don't be afraid of this one it's a tough one but that's why you're here thank you [Applause] anyone else switch to address the board see an emotional close uh motion caused by commissioner abu drabo second by commissioner wad okay we'll move on to number 10 uh first reading of policy uh we have uh 164 8.15 record keeping for health care settings in school buildings covent 19 this is mandated 2417 student intervention and referral services mandated 2461 special education receiving schools mandated 5512 harassment intimidation and bullying mandated 7410 maintenance and repair mandated 8420 emergency and crisis situations mandated cooperation with law enforcement agencies mandated any discussion okay moving on to uh board uh committee reports um first one is uh policy uh mr abu dravo thank you president smith the policy committee meeting began at 3 03 p.m attendees were board vice president jim daly myself um judy basford and administrators were lou ross and mr binjo uh the committee review to recommend adoption of the following policies as per mistrust esme number one was 1648.15 record keeping health care settings in school buildings um that's newly mandated number two two four one seven student intervention referral services that was revised and also mandated number three five five one two harassment intimidation and bullying revised also mandated number four seven four one zero maintenance and repair revised also mandated number five eight four two zero emergency and crisis situations revised and mandated number six nine three two zero cooperation with law enforcement revised and mandated number seven two four six one special education receiving schools revised and mandated the following policies were reviewed and will be discussed at the next policy meeting pending recommendation from administration number one is two four point one five two four one five point zero four excuse me title one district y parent and family engagement number two two four one five point five zero title one school parent and family engagement number three two four one six point zero one post natal accommodations for students for informational purposes the following policies were reviewed with no recommended action or changes number one was three one six one examination for cause number two was four one six one examination for cause and a request to discuss bylaws there was zero one seven four was tabled until the next meeting uh the meeting was adjourned at 3 30 pm signed by mr lou ross if actually if i may add um mr president one thing that was in here miss basford did have a recommendation to add to the agenda um for that meeting and it was um asked to be tabled for next meeting because it was asked to be put on the agenda an hour prior to our meeting and that was unfair to rest of the board members since we sent the agenda out that morning this way there couldn't be any discussion on it prior to the meeting so hopefully that will be added for next meeting i have a comment um i would like my name changed to judith because that's what i go by for the board it's not judy it's judith second i wanted the record to reflect that i asked for 0174 which is a policy on how we do how we contact the board attorney um i wanted it on there because i was told only that morning that i was on the committee i didn't get information on it i had to take my lunch hour early that day but i wanted to discuss it because we had an issue at the last meeting that reflected that policy the policy reads that um it's all business it's not new business so i i don't understand why we couldn't have a discussion when i sat on policy i let any new discussion anybody bring something up because that's what the board does at committee meetings that's our job during committing meetings is to do our business we don't have committee of the whole so we all can't participate we participate at board committee functions so because i wasn't i wasn't really prepared for that um i went back into policy because several people encouraged me to because i've been doing it for a long time so i wanted to go back on it um right off the bat it made it left a really bad taste in my mouth because the policy 0174 is not properly being implemented by this board we are violating our own policy so where do you discuss anything about policy at the policy committee level so because i was not allowed to discuss that i'm going to bring it up in public i felt like my voice was stifled i'm making a public comment that i felt like i was discriminated against because of who i am i didn't feel like i was able to participate fully because of that and i'm i'm quite upset about that i wanted to talk about there's a log that's supposed to be kept there is transmission that when any one of us as a board member speaks to the attorney an email has to go to the to the board president that sets off a mechanism for those bills to be logged that's why i want to discuss it because we are not and we are not implementing our own policy we are violating it i just want the public to know that transparency does not exist when you get stifled remember that this year very important from where it's coming from so i want to talk about 0.174 under all business new business it's all business because it's a policy on our books that has been brought up several times before about how we contact the board attorney has nothing to do with the board attorney it has to do about the mechanism that's in place it's about the process and if we violate one of our board policies what does that say about the board we don't follow the rules okay any other questions on the minutes yes mr president i do yes i'd like to respond to that so mr president um that morning and actually matter of fact the meeting prior i've mentioned i stated there is a standing policy committee meeting the first tuesday of every month any board member whether on the committee or not on the committee has the right to request for something to be put on the agenda nothing was received whether miss bastard was told that morning i was told the year before nothing prohibits anybody from reaching out prior when notified and noticed and it was told and mentioned in a public session in front of the whole city and recorded that there was a meeting and right there and then could have been said i'd like 0 1 7 perform the agenda great not a problem now when the agenda was submitted to the whole distribute to the whole as the board that morning any questions any concerns anything against anything you want to add or anything against any questions i'm sorry no response till an hour prior to the meeting now i think that is careless to the rest of our colleagues on the board that if somebody had anything to add about zero one seven four if you were on your lunch or in a meeting or whatever maybe during your work days or your work job but during the day you had no way to get to that and second of all if there's something that was involving our attorney personally as a board member if somebody was talking about me during a committee meeting and my professionalism and how things are done and i'd like to be there in that professional realm so i can give an input and i can say you know okay i understand what you guys are saying our attorney actually deserves to be at our committee meetings particularly when she's spoken about or he or she has spoken about no matter who our attorney is so nobody's being stifled nobody's being left out nobody's being discriminated against okay and at the same time when miss basswood was policy chair at the time when things are put in place and you allow last-minute items like that an hour prior it doesn't allow board members to give input going in until they have to hear about it at a meeting such as this i think if we want to discuss as colleagues and have full input we are a team we are not a team of one it's a team of nine we have our attorney we have a superintendent we have recent superintendents who have various responsibilities defaulted responsibilities and things that they and roles that they have to play and if we're gonna do this we need to do this right and honestly to allow something like this an hour prior to the meeting to be put on the agenda i think is disrespectful to the rest of the board and the administration thank you okay any other questions on the minutes okay seeing now we'll move on to i'm sorry mr daley i'm sorry oh i'm sorry well we don't have a buzzer maybe we should get a buzzer that'd be kind of fun buzz each other i could see it getting dangerous um so fema you know for a fact that in our committee meetings i've been committed with you that you have brought things up that were not on the agenda it happens all the time we talked we had a 20-minute conversation about hopscotch torches in facilities the other day that was 1000 not on the agenda and that was because you wanted to have us talk about hopscotch as being being painted on so it happens all the time it's not like you know we didn't have all the the principles in in there to give their input about whether or not they wanted hopscott courages or not like it we talk about things in committee all the time that aren't on the agenda so i think trying to hide behind the fact that it was on the agenda and it came an hour before and et cetera like that's not a really valid excuse because we talk about things all the time that aren't on the agenda in those committee meetings i think you just didn't want to speak about this because it related to a question that you asked the attorney that wasn't recorded properly so i think that's the real crux of why you didn't want to talk about it but i think trying to hide behind some policy that doesn't pertain to committee meetings is is not valid because you yourself have brought things up in committees that weren't on the agenda and at the end of every committee meeting at least every committee i've ever been a part of we always say is there anything else that we would like to discuss that's like a pretty standard closing statement and i think every other board member can say that almost all of our committee meetings end like that and sometimes there are little ad hoc things that come up um i have no problem with you guys talking about this the next meeting that's fine but i don't think the way that this was shut down so violently is not our common practice mr president mr president if i may please help you but to miss bill jones i was speaking i was speaking again disrespect um through you mr president to the board attorney this had nothing to do with you madam attorney it had to do with the process of how we operate as a board the board the policy speaks to emails that go to the president about what the subject matter is before we he gives us permission to speak to you it talks about a log that's supposed to be kept in the board building so we can reference if there is a problem we can reference the log to the bill okay i was bringing up process that's all i was bringing up nothing about you and i do feel stifled i do and you know what when i got the agenda i looked at it and it sparked the policy in my head i'm sorry that i can't throw these things out weeks ahead of time it reminded me that i had a concern and i put it on there and i asked for it to be discussed because that's what we do it's about board business it's not about dictatorships it's not about anybody going out rogue and and promising people and stating stuff it's about us as a board processing our board business that's it so that's what i wanted to speak about thank you mr abhijava thank you you're wrong so i have communication actually prior to that meeting asking and requesting for that to be put on the agenda that's one thing so i don't know who told you it wasn't and i was not privy to the agenda because it wasn't i don't remember being sent out or looking at it before it went out otherwise i said you missed something that i actually requested prior to that meeting so you're wrong on that one respectfully um second thing no actually i am not afraid to answer questions never have never will you got a question for me ask it i'll answer it yes i had an issue with the way things are worded because that was word or wrong yes i asked uh the the attorney about a better thing through the board president and we can talk about that later on today because i know it'll be brought up so i'm willing to talk about it thank you okay any other comments on the minutes seeing none um residency and security um mr water you ready for that oh i'm sorry thank you mr president mr paris i'm sorry uh residency and security committee meeting that on thursday april 28th members president from administration were dr robertosi mr gingaro mr doctor and mr constantino uh president from the board or myself ms beltran mr smith and mr aberdrabbo the meeting started at 403 pm mr doctor explained that residency investigation efforts are ongoing of the 1200 cases investigated this year over 200 involved tips provided by townspeople and staff members of those cases 34 resulted in a change of address within district while 133 were verified as residents 25 students were found to be non-residents and 20 have left the district with the remaining five to leave at the end of the school year mr doctor explained that a parent contacted dr robertosi and the board of education concerning investigations conducted by the residency department he explained the process involved in investigations and the fact that this family was visited twice in a 12-month period was an anomaly and that this would occur this year only as we reset our calendar and operations for the department uh number three mr constantino explained the security drills from march and april and that all observed drills were conducted properly number four mr paris explained a complaint from a townsperson about safety and traffic issues on colfax avenue crosswalk between city hall property and the high school driveway mr gingaro explained the difficulty that clifton pd is having finding crossing guards to man the needed stations furthermore that crosswalk has not had a crossing guard for at least a decade and would need to be a new post mr gingaro will reach out to clifton pd and explain the situation to see if anything can be done number five mr giangaro explained that security cameras are being updated throughout the district the beginning planning stage is nearly completed all schools and work will commence as soon as possible meeting concluded at 4 49 thank you any questions okay we'll move on to unfinished business is there any unfinished business uh yeah she told me that um the um what we brought up the last meeting could be discussed at this point um so i wasn't sure if it would be pertinent um to read the opinion um i think because it was kind of for public knowledge more than for the board's knowledge i'm not sure if the lawyer of you or whoever would want to read what's right uh the opinion that was emailed out to us today the opinion that you wrote for the board um about the three sorry the three questions that were asked of you about the election um elections in general um so i was just wondering if you wanted to read that so that people knew what was asked and then what was the answer um so if anyone who's running would you know be be uh receptive to that information as well we won't do that here already there is okay i don't care which everybody you know it's been discussed so much it really doesn't make a difference at this point okay however i i don't let me find it yeah just emailed out to us today i don't know if you were cell phones are great so okay thank you can you hear me excellent so the email that i sent to the board president which was then forwarded to the board recently uh states dear mr smith you have asked us for a legal opinion regarding the ability of a board of education member to run for another elected office and or to sit on another elected office while a board of education member specifically you asked the following can a board of education member run for an elected office such as the city council of clifton while serving as a board of education member in clifton two if elected to the city council can the board of education member continue to serve on the board of education and also on the city council three can a board of education member run for two elected offices city council and also board of education at the same time below are the answers to your questions this is a short opinion so but lower the answers to your questions one yes a board of education member can run for an elected office such as the city council of clifton while still serving as a board of education member there is nothing in the education statutes nor in the election statutes that prohibits a member of a board of education from running for an elected office while still serving on the board of education two once elected to the city council and taking the oath of office the board of education member must resign from his position on the board in order to serve on the other elect governing body see new jersey statutes annotated 18 a colon 12-2 which states specifically no member of any board of education shall be interested directly or indirectly in any contract with or claim against the board nor in the case of local and regional school districts shall he hold office as mayor or as mayor of or as member of the governing body of a municipality nor in the case of county special services school districts and county vocational school districts shall he hold office as a member of the governing body of a county and i underlined shall he hold office as mayor or as a member of the governing body of a municipality and so therefore emphasis was added three we found nothing in the statutes or regulations that prevents a board of education member from running for the board at the same time that he runs for another elected office again per the legal advice above once elected the board of education member must choose which office to take as he cannot serve on both the board of education and on the city council i trust this answers your questions should you need any clarification please do not hesitate to contact me sincerely derelice okay thank you um so just for a point of clarification can you tell us how this relates to the running of the school district because that's your purpose as the board attorney if i'm not mistaken yeah sure so um i i respond to the to requests for legal advice from the board president from the superintendent from the business administrator um [Music] from the assistant superintendent depending on the matter but generally the superintendent i mean obviously the superintendent always knows about that um in this case it was a request for a legal opinion on a matter that involved something that one of the board members was going to be doing what or possibly doing and i think that that relates to the school district in that sense because it affects the board but what is the actions of someone in their personal life which is running for an election have to do with the school board it affects the school board as to whether or not somebody has is going to have a conflict or not has how does that affect the sitting members of the board because if they're going to do something on the outside there's i mean there's a laundry list of things people could do to affect such as moving et cetera but i would think that that's a question for the county clerk or your personal a campaign attorney rather than using taxpayer funds to ask this type of question because it wasn't if it was like a 15-minute question that'd be fine but this was a three and a half hour question so it's kind of expensive question to ask in my opinion i i understand i you know you're perfectly entitled to your opinion um i think that it also affects the board because depending on when somebody is running you could end up having a vacancy on the board and that affects the whole board so we've been through that okay i'm i'm not here to disagree no no we've already been through that we've already had a member of the elise has the floor delicious is speaking wait it's okay um that's i i was asked a question understood i researched it i provided a legal opinion right but when the bill came out it had nobody's name elise is speaking right now please well it's okay we're having a conversation well that's guys once again it depends on who interrupts whom and they get it we've had this discussion that's why we have the leadership we have now on this board had decisions been made differently that day this wouldn't be going on um that that question was answered a long time ago when miss pino went uh during election during mid-term to the city council nothing changed in election law so people should have known the answer that question so to me it was a waste of money okay and i'm not it's not you but once again a 174 was not followed there was no email i asked mr using i just point something out to you ms bassword and again i'm not i'm not um i'm just point out just specifically to the board policy that i looked up and i just had it um here we go this the the policy you're talking about oh 174 one of the things about that policy and i frankly didn't even know this until mr uzi pointed it out to me that in the policy itself because it mirrors uh the administrative code to 6 acres 23a-52 paragraph a2 that's the accountability regulations those provisions state that school districts with legal costs that exceed 130 percent of the statewide average per student amount should establish the procedures outlined in one two three and four which are in the policy and according to mr usi this school district does not exceed 130 percent of the statewide average per student amount i don't know what that number is but that's what i'm saying to you okay so let me ask this question that question was asked by one member why wasn't that information disseminated with the rest of the board because that's something that could affect anybody else that wanted to um because you you have still till september to take out your petitions and maybe anybody else on this board would want to jump over to the city side and actually run it's stuff like that that it's just not getting disseminated to the rest of the board and that's the issue the policy was written that we had a log and i remember years ago a log was kept karen perkins kept a very very detailed log of all all the entries that was number one the other thing is that i know we wrote on there that email permission has to be granted from the board president when we change the policy because we wanted to control who was contacting the board attorney because we had an issue with a board member texting you and they weren't supposed to text you questions they're supposed to go through the uh the president or through the ba we have permission we're allowed to go through the ba as well to get permission to speak to you it's it speaks about that in the policy okay i'm not disagreeing with you ms fastford at all i'm not i'm not disputing the policy i'm simply just pointing out with what's in there i don't i don't disagree with having a log i think that's a fabulous idea is that's not within my purview to create the log obviously so and in terms of uh in terms of our legal opinion being disseminated um if we want to if the board wants me to send out the legal opinions to the whole board i certainly don't have a problem with that um when i sent it i sent it to the board president to the superintendent to the business administrator to mr abedrabel i and clearly you know it became it became a topic of conversation casually with some of my friends from the another other districts do you discuss what happens with your attorneys and one of my friends said to me um you can ask anytime if the board president is speaking to you we can ask what the conversation was about we're loud we're proving these bills but it is what it is um i'm just not happy with the fact is that we already knew the answer to this question it shouldn't have been charged to the uh to the the attorney it was a question that if you're running for another board you should have found out the information on your own that's i agree with miss beltran with that as well miss basford the only thing i have to say is mr wagyu i'm sorry we might speak the only issue i have which may have caused confusion in my opinion was the former board member mr casper i forgot what committee he sat on or if it was the county committee it was something of that purview back when we were in the high school he said that the law changed and he made it a bunch of comments were probably caused confusion just that's just my personal opinion of what i think why this happened now we should have honestly asked we should asked you once he mentioned it but obviously that was just in the past and that's probably why mr smith asked me because there it was it was a delicate assembly that he attended on november 21st 2020 and he said that the law has changed or something has changed and if you are going to plan on running for an election for something else that you have to actually step down now before and we all i think we all had that conversation we're like i think that's not true or that but obviously you need a legal opinion that's going to check the facts um mr president i was actually at that meeting and the delivery of that statement was actually incorrect you can run for everything you cannot run the same time in the same election for two different offices that's where he got the confusion um there was a whole a very lengthy conversation you can't sign one uh petition and say that you can hold this office while you're gonna run for a newly running person for two separate offices because you cannot commit to the the oath and saying that you can actually serve two different positions so he got very confused about that that's not what the that that's not what was delivered at that meeting i wasn't at the meeting i wasn't privy to that conversation so mr smith all three of these questions came from you no other board member no uh mr aberdrabbo asked to speak to the attorney concerning him okay so it came from him all three questions may i speak now thank you and no it did not actually so to the public let's let's let's set this really straight really quick if anybody knows me i'm pretty political savvy i work for legislators to stay in the federal level for a very long time you want to ask me when this law went to about where you can't hold dual offices that was 2010 i remember where i was that year okay and there have been many instances let's look at lieutenant governor for example she was running for lieutenant governor and state legislature at the same time yes you can run for two office at the same time no you could not hold two outside that is illegal unless you are grandfathered in such as assemblyman gary shares an example forsake assemblyman and also can also uh council president pat lepore who stepped down he was grandfathered in but he went to respect the law he was the mayor of woodland park and a freeholder and he stepped down as woodland park mayor i know the laws but there was one thing that came back and that's the one thing i wasn't sure about and i asked state legislators exactly what they said we had nothing on the books i said president smith back in 2020 mr casper came back from a delegate assembly and said xyz but why nobody want to speak then is what i'm confused about why you want to speak now and not then when he actually read it okay excuse me stop making faces let's act like adults okay that's one thing second thing we want to talk about why policy needs to get changed now when you're a chair of policy why'd you change why did you not change it when you were the chair of policy that's what i want to know why now why is it when it's good for you it's good for you when it's good for everybody else ah time out i got a problem with this that doesn't work with me it does not work with me and you know what last meeting you targeted mr casper when he was not on the board and now you're targeting me and guess what i can handle myself and i can answer the questions so yes i did go to mr smith and say hey mr smith you know do you mind asking the attorney this because you know what what's going to happen and i'm not campaigning for myself i'm going to make it on the record but the example was brought up and yes i am running for council but you know what let's say what happened that i finished my petitions i put it in there now somebody comes up here and says oh mr abhijaba you got to step down well now i can stand on my two feet and say no i don't because you know guess what i guarantee you somebody would have came up and said that why because they don't like me and guess what i don't have to be like everybody it doesn't hurt me i can go to sleep at night but you know what i'd rather spend a little extra time and i did my due diligence and i did not go to the board attorney to last minute as the last option i went to legislators on my own i went to attorneys on my own they said you have to ask your own board attorney that's exactly what i did and that's one question that i asked not three questions let's set that straight so then who did the other two questions come from so that's you know that's where back to the crux of this like i i mean i guess he's okay spending taxpayer dollars on a personal question that's okay that's his own personal preview to do that that's totally up to him not something that i would do if i was choosing to run for both because i am also up for election so i guess i could potentially run for both offices if i want to now i know because we paid for this question to be answered i would not have used taxpayer dollars to answer this question i would have had my own campaign legal counsel answer this question for me or i would have gone to the um to the county clerk or the city clerk but regardless where did the other questions come from then or was it just yourself asking the question which is fine if it was just yourself asking a question but it just seems strange that these questions as he said you know it brought up in november and now all of a sudden we're asking it um that's just that's just my own opinion if any other board members have any opinions on this um that's where i stand are you sure so just just so that we're clear sometimes when clients ask a question whether it's a board president or private sector client it doesn't matter who questions are asked in such a way that lawyers because we work in minutia sometimes we'll divide the question up whatever the question is so that we can understand it logically to look at all of the facets of it so right here right now i can't tell you i didn't record the conversation that i had with mr smith i couldn't tell you yes he asked me three distinct questions i know that whatever conversation the conversation that we had that's how i analyzed it so i just want to make that clear that it's not necessarily well he asked me one two three it was a conversation and i divide it up so that i know exactly what it is that i'm looking for and be able to answer it does that land okay yes first of all i stand behind my work and the committee last year and prior years of their work i don't have a problem with 174 i have a problem that we're not implementing the policy that's my problem i wanted to bring it to the committee because that's where we do board business that's where we do more business that's where we're supposed to function we can't function as a committee of the whole we're supposed to bring you mean to tell me every single committee has never brought up new business that's bs that's bs i mean you guys people come bits about stuff that's not even board related in these committees and they talk about you know the sky is blue or the the light outside the building isn't the right color it's really disgusting that because i asked i asked to speak about something at a committee meeting that i went back to that i was reluctant to be on mr abu drabble because of you and what you've done to me all right that's why we're we're on the topic of i am on the topic that's going on i am on no i am going to explain to the community why i jumped off a committee that's that's the man has harassed me we're not discussing that right now this is specifically under what under what tense mr president because you know what you allow him to go off on iran but when a woman wants to you shut it down okay you are sexist and you're not enough no i'm not speaking no i am not accepting excuse you're out of order excuse me you're out of water yelling at me i am not yelling i'm very calm and telling you you're out of order we are discussing the question that miss beltran brought up that is what is okay discuss so no other band box no other comments about anything that is the way it's supposed to be run i am only doing what i'm following i you know you're yelling at me and i don't appreciate and you owe me an apology you yelled at miss beltran at the last meeting you were disgusting and i got phone calls again again this is out of order please okay so i'll get back to the question so we're talking why why is this allowed to be put on a bill for an attorney because i think the public has the right to know what we're spending our money on okay we pay you what 150 dollars an hour right per hour okay we've hired special attorneys for five hundred dollars an hour from people that don't have problems spending the board's money okay i would like to know why these this question was asked because you have a we have an ability to call down to school boards and get the question answered for free mr uh president smith by may yes the actions and steps that were taken as follows the board attorney was less and i will work i will work backwards the abort attorney was last i have call logs of my own that i can share that other attorneys were called and they said reach to your board of attorneys before that i reached out to school boards and i did and i got call log on that i can share with you they said we we haven't heard of that but that's conflicting right school board says we haven't heard of that but yet you have a board president board member at the time in 2020 that says he came back from a county delegates meeting or state delegates meeting and is giving other information that was given by the delegation or the njsba prior to that i asked legislators like many of us up here have the ability to call legislators we have friends on legislator and state legislator and call them and say hey so and so john jane have you heard fyz no i it huh something's weird and no this was not asked in march no this was not as last november no this was not asked in 2021 this was as in and i asked this question repeatedly and repeatedly and repeatedly and i get the answer now is that my fault that i asked a long time ago and i tried to communicate this long time ago so at the end of the day the idea of asking it goes to the line of a timeline everything led to your board attorney so let's say i didn't ask the board attorney let's say what mr casper at the time who was a board member decided you know that is not decided but that actually was factual and none of us were able to know the answer let's say somebody did decide to declare for council candidacy and still on the board and is called out to step down and says no can the board can the board get sued can the person can person legal actually take it against that person to remove that person so at the end of the day it's better to do our due diligence and make sure that we don't go down that that black hole so we need to understand what we're dealing with while we're sitting on the board okay so just to clear some things up the any board member can ask the attorney any question the board president just logs it and gives permission i do not decline most of the time i don't even get an uh a statement of why they're contacting the board attorney but leaving that aside you asked me to speak to the board attorney i say yes that is between you and the board attorney now that is how the process has been here at least that i checked back for the last 10 years okay at least for the last 10 years no one is denied talking to the board attorney if the board attorney feels that something is not related to the school system in her professional capacity she will then tell the the board member i do not answer this question and is not in the realm of the board of education that is not my decision all of a sudden we're we're giving powers to me that don't exist that's not my decision i've never given anyone turned anyone down to speak to the attorney when you ask me i log it it goes into a file and those are compared to the bills okay so if someone contacts the board attorney and the board attorney feels that that is a question that she can answer for this board then she does so hasn't changed in the last 10 years okay so again whether we don't agree with her opinion that's a different story but she performed her duties as the attorney by asking questions of this board just in this past week there's been four or five requests to speak to the attorney no one is denied to speak to the attorney everyone has the opportunity to speak to attorney if they wish and release again in her capacity if someone called on a personal issue i am sure you would not answer their question or say that is your personal information is that correct that's correct so i don't know where we're getting whether this was someone's personal views or whatever if so it would have been declined by the attorney and it was not the attorney performed her duties the bill to pay her should be paid plain and simple that is how the process works okay we've gone back to how many years mr russia did we check their a log book has not been used um and again i can't i don't know from previous boards and what they did all as i know when a member of this board asked to speak to the attorney i print that request out it goes into a file and then i compare it when the bill comes in that is my extent of it i am not a person here to decide that your your question is not important i've never declined anybody from speaking to the board attorney i don't believe that it's meant to put into the hands of the president to decide whether something is a question to go to the board attorney is acceptable or not that's not under the realm of the board president that would be between the board person and the attorney and that is what has been filed been followed okay um also i i asked mr daily i said in previous years are our bills excessive with the attorney is that what there is an issue away right we had this conversation so if the bills were excessive then i could see the board questioning this but now the board's going to try and you know police the questions that another board member can ask and that's not our job that's not our job and if our attorney makes a decision and you feel it isn't appropriate then you have the right to go do what you want if you want to ask school boards that's fine but that's what we have our attorney for she represents the board and if a board member has a question she is the one to answer it and again nobody in the two years that i've been president has ever been declined to speak to the president to the uh board attorney nobody i do not believe that is under the realm of the president and that would be between you and the attorney yes miss belgium sorry um to avoid i think some of this um confusion going forwards maybe every time a formal uh response is given that everyone would be shared with because then we wouldn't have taken to the bills and been like what's this question if march 3rd or march 15 whatever time you responded we all were like oh okay valid question now we have an answer so i think that would just be helpful every time a formal response like this is written back that we all are shared to them we're not shocked on the bills i know there's a few other things on the bills that we don't really know about that we've asked questions now in committee meetings because of what we saw on the bills which we weren't really we didn't have no we had no idea that those events were even going on so i think that might just be helpful that's an excellent policy it can go to public just hasn't been followed in the past that's yeah the reason it wasn't and we did have this discussion there are some times when she won't be able to share it with the whole board correct are there some instances when you can't share what you discussed with another board member no so everything could be shared which can't be shared with the people if it's something that has to do with the student issue that i've shared with the superintendent then perhaps yeah so it just can't be shared publicly necessarily yeah so that's not yeah i think why not yeah i'm just saying just because it'll clear up some of those sure sorry it might lead to more emails yep that's not an issue at all mr smith okay so going forward uh delise will uh share with the entire board after uh her discussion with a board member and she'll share it with everybody mr smith i have a question yes has a board member ever asked to speak to an attorney and you've asked why and they said i can't tell you i want to tell the attorney and i can't tell you yeah there's been some times they just it's so it's a board thing yeah okay but again i i never asked i never asked anybody for the reason i i just never felt it was my you know i don't think i have that right to do that and i and i want to make it very clear to the public last week when this came about and mr smith was being attacked because quote unquote being a campaign major or somebody in the past or what not was first of all um not appropriate because you need to get the full story to attack somebody to have evidence that things are being done but that's not what i'm going to talk about but when i corrected and i said the line may be reading wrong and i voluntarily said hey i asked that question some board member said oh okay well then that answers that question but that still it doesn't have that very calmly and cool about it um miss beltran you were fine with it when i spent sickly when i told you in the back room exactly what it was for no no don't give me a look because it was because no because mr canole was actually right around us as well so so mr knight was around the whole time and you and you didn't have a problem with it so you know danny kindness i got you yeah so what i'm just trying to say is the tune changed from last week this weekend i really want to know why and i and we can have this personal discussion on the side i really want to know why because i'm curious why we're okay with it last week when i gave the explanation here and when i spoke to you you know in the back room about it and i was more than happy to answer any questions but also now we want to change our tune in public you offered to pay for it last weekend so i don't know if that still stands no i did not so please open any words in my mouth joe conovo standing right there when he said that i would be willing to pay for it i mean if you want to start going what talked about in the back room and you want to make comments about what a woman looks at you and makes face you know it's just you know this whole gender thing because it becomes that happens it's not a female it's not a gender it's not a race not a religious thing this is a fahim and dana thing let's get that very straight so it's not a gender thing and no i'm not trying to shut you down because you're a female you know what is the problem is is that the past year this gender card has been thrown around way too much because they decide they want to which is fine you have every right to do so nobody should be shutting another person now for cultural religious gender-based or whatever you believe in nobody has the right to do that and you have every right to speak out i fully support that so please refrain from saying because you're because you're you're a woman making looks no it really isn't dana it's because honestly that's not how i maybe i did and i don't remember i can't tell you 100 i did but we had a conversation in the back and frankly that's just what i remember so that's all i'm saying all i'm saying is thank you i think i've i've been answering questions respectfully this entire time i don't think i've been disrespectful just my opinion i've been expressing it and unfortunately we have differing opinions which is part of politics and part of life and you know that's just how it is and if we're going to talk about everything that we've said in the back room and bring it up to the dais we'll be here all day for years talking about things that are talked out there that are different here which is the same as every political environment you know the supreme court is going to fight with each other in the front and then go to lunch afterwards that's just how life is and i'm sorry if that's if i offended you in any way if uh you know you you don't like that i'm questioning things that are on the bill that mention your name um but that's just who i am and that's how i'm going to continue to operate and no you shouldn't be sorry for that because i didn't take offense that at all i'm more than happy to answer questions but let's answer the questions that are supposed to be answered in terms of what's right and what's wrong and not make things up that's all i'm asking i've answered questions off the day so i've answered questions on the days i have no problem answering questions whatsoever i'm an open book i have nothing to hide if i'm wrong i'll admit i'm wrong if i see something if something's yellow i'm not going to say it's white orange black green or whatever it may be it is what it is it's just life yeah we disagree but the end of the day if we're gonna disagree let's disagree about the facts not things that you know factual that's not things that we're gonna make up and pull out of a box and stick in another box like yeah that bot that thing just jumped from one box to another no it didn't you pulled it out and put it in it let's let's be realistic all right and also from uh last meeting just so there's a clarification on this as well um ms gutierrez you could speak to this if you wish but um there was a question about it in the the bill last meeting the attorney did not have her information in front of her that is why it was not revealed until she could go back and look at her notes and then present it back to the board this week that is why it was not answered last week am i correct in saying that okay so any other discussion on this i have a unfinished business on april 7th uh under new business f number three i asked for a um that the board attorney contact the sec for an advisory opinion regarding lay people attending board committee meetings and i have not received anything and i'd like to know when i'm going to receive something on that if we're going to receive an answer if the petition actually was sent thank you miss bassford um that's the meeting that i i wasn't here for that meeting um and we did take a look at that issue there is an advisory opinion that we wrote up but um in looking at the rules for advisory opinions they're supposed to come from the individual board member or school official um okay so april 7th it's may 7 19 why am i only hearing this now because i have it ready for you if you'd like to send it yourself or if you want the superintendent well but it's really okay so because it came from me if it came from any other board member poof i'm done i'm sorry i i disagree with all he is i think it's disgusting that that it is selected the way people get treated that was april 7th i asked for that april 7th that's over a month ago it's not fair then i i could have wrote it already i could have brought it down i could have drove down to trenton and hand delivered it myself that's not fair that i have to wait this long to find out it was never even done i think it's appalling i am very upset i am more than upset i am appalled and i think anybody that sits here and sits quietly you guys should all have your heads examined too because when a board member excuse me when a board member asks and requests them makes a motion makes a second motion second it's voted on by this unit and nothing gets done that's disgusting it's disgusting it what it shows that my participation in this group is not worthy to the people that i sit with because they don't even care that it wasn't followed up that's disgusting okay it was a valid request i was told it was going to be done it's may 19th so i get told today that april 7th april 8th i could expect a phone call it's not going to be done it's really disgusting okay i waited all this time to find out i can't even say what i want to say because it's going to come out the wrong way i'm really upset okay anyone else under unfinished business um mr president i do um last meeting i mentioned that there was a legislative meeting may 24th 2022 10 a.m next tuesday uh i requested and i'd like the board should be a little more cognizant if they have anything to add when asked to do so because particularly when you're dealing with external partners like legislators you know i think there was one meeting where we gave them within less than a week and they canceled a meeting because they needed more time to do some some research policy research legislative research and find out more information i had to reach out and i want to thank mr paris mr smith if i'm missing anybody else i apologize but it was only those two who have said we got to bring stuff to the legislature in public and actually follow it up when i even though i asked a second time but life happens and it was added to the agenda um if we're going to say let's ask our legislators please let's follow up let's do our due diligence as people who are stewards of this town and you know let's not just showboat let's you know let's add and it's not legislative this is every policy it is every every committee excuse me so i just ask that we do our due diligence in terms of following up in regards to any committee so i did send the legislative agenda over already if there's any additions anybody would like to make please let me know as soon as possible if hopefully by tomorrow so we can try to sneak it in for the agenda so it gives legislators some time to do some research thank you okay and a deadline for that like you can't you can't have it last minute yeah no last minute i mean we got a if we have to talk about committee meeting agendas but we already have that i think what 24 hours that's got to be no no more than 24 hours agenda no but to committee meetings well committee members don't want to laugh there's there's actually a policy yeah no last minute yeah so tomorrow you want to have everything by tomorrow if anybody has any additions for example mr paris gave me some stuff about njsba where we should support that was added um there were stuff actually that mrs basser sent over from njsba of legislative resolutions senate and assembly which i added for a little more clarity there was stuff that mr daley and mr smith you gave me and there's stuff from the administration that they gave me and i added it and i sent it over so that gives us one week i have not gotten any pushback from any state legislators saying that there's not enough time and they've all accepted the agenda but we just need to be a little more cognizant of external partners it's not as easy as as an administration hey can you look this up to our attorney hey can you look this up when you're dealing with outside parties it gets a little more difficult okay any other unfinished business okay let's move on excuse me let's move on to uh education administration uh we have ea 1 through ea 9.

and we would love for our students to celebrate the people that have served your kids all these years it would be wonderful thank you [Music] thank you all right the slideshow is ready when you are ladies and gentlemen i i want to thank you and i thank the students for that stayed back for this next presentation that we have we'd like to take this time and celebrate the retirees from apple valley unified school district and what a great act to follow in which they each got to see the fruits of their labor and and all they've poured into to their careers and time spent serving our community and serving our students uh now it's time to put them in the spotlight a little bit hear about their next steps um but in our system i do want to address every retiree that we're going to call up here tonight where they're going to give them a little bag and inside that bag we have we have an apple you know this little trophy that we get to them but our system we already honor all of our employees uh in five year increments those that are here 5 10 15 20 years get a pin that acknowledges you know how many years they've served the district once they hit that 25th year they get this granite or i'm sorry marble apple they get on 30 years 35 years there's crystal apples there's just this progression of apples that they get as their longevity with our system uh goes on and on we just gave and recognized a lot of awards for students that have skills outside of what most of us would consider to be the typical academia the you know these are students that came up and received awards for the most part today um recognizing their abilities for hands-on and this trophy is is something that i personally hold more near and dear to those ones even that you get for 35 and 40 years of service because this is crafted you'll notice the upper part of the trophy they're about they're going to receive resembles i don't know if we are stealing trademark materials but if you look at the yucca loma bridge they have an apple exactly like this at the entry points of the bridge as you go over it and mr casey penfold's welding class are the students that put together this apple for us mr reese in the woodshop class puts the base together for us we work with our industry partners um performance powder coating does the powder coating awards and recognition gives the name plate and it really is kind of an all-encapsulating image or or tangible object or fuel trophy that represents who we are as a community and and it's an honor to hand these trophies to our retirees who have given of themselves for many many years many decades and many cases and some almost could you could argue close to half a century so with that i'd like i'll start a slideshow i'll talk through some we have 14 people that we're going to be recognizing some of them have already said the grass is greener and i'm not driving in from texas or kentucky or wherever they've landed at this point but others have sent us information and i'd like to just kind of take this moment to go go through these folks um our very first one mr brian rowell out of our it department in the image we promise not to show the risk manager or workman's comp team from sliding down the water slide but thank you we asked each each retiree to give us some of their their memories or most accomplished moments um you can see his plans are going to hang out with grandchildren in tennessee uh and has made a lot of friends he has a comment up here that i didn't ask for him to explain uh but he states that he's had a lot um i should have wore my glasses i had a lot of fun with the friends i've made at av usd i've worked with all the schools and all the sites and made many friends i've even married a couple of them so congratulations [Applause] he performed the marriages oh what did i read it wrong he said i even married a couple these are his words not mine my good grief i'm always getting set up oh you performed the marriages i thought you said reformed i'm sorry like ears and eyes i need i need a new set of both i think uh cheryl bailey um not here cheryl uh incredibly proud i love how she emphasizes um spending the time with children as her most significant accomplishment um and she's one that the commute from kentucky back to us to get the trophy just wasn't in the cards but congratulations cheryl hopefully you're watching us online and we will miss you all right next retiree i'm sure he answers this question as much as i do no we're not related but bruce conrad also not here retired mid-year active part of opening two middle schools he does make reference uh that you know his funny or most poignant memory was working with virgil barnes tom hogan and how vista compania was a family culture and becoming friends with ken bedell who we will talk about later so congratulations bruce next retiree laurie roberts she i saw something oh come on up lori lori uh i i'm gonna share what you shared and and uh and recognize the pressure that you put on your family first of all we appreciate her willingness to give us a couple weeks to help us start out next year before she officially hangs it up and goes so she's gonna help us launch the next school year but on her slide or her questions her immediate plans after uh retirement are to play with all 12 of her grandchildren but her long-term plans are to play with all 24.

so moved on moved by mr abu dhabi second by mr awad discussion yes mr president yes mr kenobi uh on ea one we have a policy here uh zero one six seven and at the end of the policy it says the portion of the meeting during which the participation of the public is invited may be limited to 60 minutes and will be concluded by 11 pm is this a new addition to to the policy no this is this is not a new addition now this has been on your policy for many years excuse me one person has the floor okay mr uc do you want to comment on that i mean as far as i know i've seen that language in that policy okay is policy committee made any changes to that no no so so my concern with this this portion here um is that if things run late kind of like what they are doing tonight if this had happened earlier or every night when we have uh a couple of uh demonstrations or illustrations then followed by some some information um things could go past these these times here we could have public comment at 10 30 so does that mean we close it at 11 o'clock so right but i told joe you could adjust it at any time which we've had same thing with the the midnight can't go past midnight we we make extensions to that so um i did check back uh with previous presidents and this has been on the uh the books for quite some time so if you want policy to look at that that's that's fine but yes miss uh dr robertosi mr gone i think the intent is um in the event there is such a controversial issue that the line is around the block it gives the board the ability to say okay we're going to limit this tonight because otherwise we'll be here for 24 hours i don't know that this has ever been implemented in clifton i don't believe it ever has i hope that we never get to the point where anybody thinks that it's a good idea to implement that but i don't think it's a my opinion it's a board decision but i don't think it's a bad thing to have in the policy kind of a just in case i don't foresee us ever using it any anything further okay roll call uh for ea mr abedrabo yes mr awad yes miss bassford i don't know what we're voting on because i stepped out of the room to go to the bathroom so could somebody enlighten me sure there's a motion in second for the the ea section of the agenda yes miss beltran yes mr canova yes dr danny yes mr paris yes vice president daily yes and president smith yes motion carries okay next we have c personnel we have p one through p 31 but we're yes mr smith um i request that we pull a p28 for executive session uh but i'd like to give a reason publicly because i know there are some of our employees probably watching from home there's one issue i have to discuss with the board in closed session i don't expect it to be a problem so i don't want anybody at home thinking that they're not getting hired i believe will come out of executive session and this resolution will pass um so i just don't want anybody to get nervous but if we could pull p 28 for executive session okay p 28 pulled for executive the balance motion motion by mr abu drabo second by mr awad discussion seeing non-roll call please mr abu drabo yes with the extension on p20 mr awad yes miss bassford yes miss beltran yes mr canova yes dr danny yes mr paris uh yes but i'm staying on c19 vice president daley yes president smith yes motion carry okay next we have d financing facilities we have f1 through f9 promotion motion by mr abhijava second by mr awad discussion seeing non-roll call sorry mr abhijaba yes mr awad yes miss basford yes miss beltran uh yes on all except for in the uh claims list the uh the one um the one check two uh agl from three two uh that references the candidacy for re-election and council question mr canova yes dr danny yes mr paris yes vice president daley yes president smith yes mr mr president i'd like to also change my vote to uh vote no on the cheque no prop no problem thank you okay make that note okay you're up i am thought i was first left last time that's why no problem no you might have been let me see before board member comments no usually we don't okay um yeah it could uh mr uh mr awad then europe i have no comments tonight okay so mister okay uh miss beltran you're next so me miss beltran when you're ready i'll also keep it short and be a little bit longer than yours um i just like to thank all the speakers that come out i think it's really good for our democracy to have um two opposing viewpoints although he did share their comments respectfully back and forth i like to see and i hope to see in the future with other issues we saw it last week with the budget we've been seeing continuously with the uh the new standards and i hope you know we continue to see that type of participation um it makes our meetings a little bit more lengthy but i don't mind that because i think we're up here to listen to the comments and concerns of the people and to try and represent um how we feel the town wants things to be done and i like to hear the input from our fellow townspeople um i liked also that the student representative talked about the dress codes because that's been an issue for at least as long as i've been going to school so at least 30 years i wore the boys uniform to school and i went to a uniform school and that was like very controversial back then because um you were supposed to wear the jumper and i was like you're not putting that on me i'm not wearing the jumper i'm going to wear the pants and the sweater vest my mom called me a mailman every day going to school but i embraced you know what i what i wanted to wear um and i think it is you know a fashion problem right now that it is difficult to find clothing that no like fits your body type first and then after that is appropriate for school sometimes those two things don't coincide um so i think it is a larger issue same as the student representative thought that it's larger than just clifton but there's no reason that a district our size can't be on the forefront of maybe maybe incorporating it into these new discussions about sexual orientation everything like that about how to respect someone regardless of what they're wearing um you know whether someone is wearing a dress or someone's wearing a pantsuit you know either way they deserve the same respect and they should be able to learn the same environment um i also wouldn't want to speak to the the people who are saying that elementary school is too young for a lot of these discussions i'm on the team of feeling that some of those discussions are too young but i do feel that in middle school especially uh those conversations do need to happen um so i think maybe kindergarten in my personal opinion is way too young but i think the middle school curriculum that is appropriate and forwards um i know we don't we get we have to vote it in but we don't unfortunately the way it's been to explain to us at least is that we don't get much say into what can be changed that the curriculum is coming from the state it has to be worked in it can be presented different ways but the core curriculum has to be the same tonight some present um presenters talked about that boards are voting against it so i'll do some research on my own about how other boards are handling it um but again i i really applaud everyone who came and speak tonight and i hope that they continue to show up at every meeting going forward miss bassford yes thank you first of all i want to apologize for losing my cool for those that know me know how passionate i get about an issue because it's real to me it's really real to me when you email the board president you wait a while then you have to send another email as a reminder and then he responds to you saying that he forgot to hit the send button in his response and then you go through all of this it just builds on the disrespect that goes bang bang bang it's like a peg board like them all in the hull game you know that you keep on getting pegged and you get angry and if i disrespected anyone on this board i apologize but you know what my work speaks for itself my dedication speaks for itself my commitment to the kids of this district speaks for itself my integrity my accountability speaks for itself i hold my head up very high when i go to bed at night knowing that i did the best i could do every day making decisions based on safety for children keeping children safe keeping children educated keeping children first not myself that's why i'm here because the voters put me here because they know my work was number nine on the ballot proud of that proud of the position i came in because the people spoke to me and they put me here i had to leave this room to compose myself yeah i get angry but i'm a passionate person and i'm allowed to get angry when you feel disrespected proved it tonight didn't i i proved it tonight the disrespect i got the email i forgot to say i forgot to hit send okay right whatever all right so um i would like to thank all the speakers for coming out i would like to thank you for using your voice at the podium we do hear you we may not agree but we do hear you congratulations to the students of the month to the safety patrol students and to the parents and to the chaperones on the trip have a wonderful safe trip make memories that will last you a lifetime it is a wonderful thing that started so we're starting to open up everything's starting to happen um the other night we went to distinguished awards night at the west 1200 people were in the audience there it was a wonderful occasion that's when we get to honor the best of the best in each grade it makes other people strive for that which is something well that we do it really makes you say to yourself wow i'm part of this and i and the speaker he was so good some heard him some talked over him or some talked through him while he was speaking but i heard him i turned my chair around just to listen to him he talked about perseverance i heard his message and it was so encouraging that people in that audience heard his message as well perseverance no matter what's thrown at me i will persevere i promise you because at the end of the day good always always overcomes evil thank you [Music] mr canova good evening um first i just wanted to say uh the uh the event we attended the other day that dr robertozi threw for his student foundation was a great showing i think everyone had a great time i know i did myself but it was amazing to see how many people are out there supporting our students and their scholarships so that was nice to see this morning i indeed see off the uh the the fifth grades um safety patrol trip because my daughter's actually there this year um and she had her butterflies but she's she's doing good there i'm still waiting for the call so if i jump out it's because i'm going to receive her call um but i saw some pictures that they were sending over in the facebook group and she's very excited loves it i could just tell every picture is a smiling face her and all her friends there um and you're right those are memories are going to last a lifetime the dress code issue having three daughters i definitely understand the issue here there's not a store you can go to where you find these shorts you have to order them on amazon or there's some other place where things come in from china and they come in different sizes i don't know where they order from but they never fit right and and it's just always a big mess but if you go to any of these other stores abercrombie and all these other stores that she wants to buy things from they're all it's just the way they're made it's the style of cut it is what it is that's the design um and it's just funny to me because you could go to a beach and a guy with a shirt off could talk to a girl that looks like she has her bra and the panties on and it's fine but if that happened in any other setting it's it's a big issue um and i understand there's certain just for for certain attire for certain venues i'm not saying we should be wearing bikinis in school but um it's just funny to me how how people make a big deal about a three three-finger strap or something for a woman is just ridiculous so if those things are in there i think dress code is something we should talk about in policy if we can kick that back there and take a look at that the academic awards night what i found outstanding was that there were hundreds of students there so of the high school in order to have this accolade you need to have a 90 average or better for that term hundreds of students there and there was even a criteria for students that um did this for all four years and there was almost 100 students in that category meaning they had a 90 or above in all of their grades and all their marketing periods for all the four years they ate in high school i mean to me that's just amazing 100 students um and and uh we always want more uh but to me that that's just great and seeing the student here who had an associate's degree already and other students that do that are doing these things i think those are the things that we should be promoting i think those are the people that we should be showcasing getting out to the students so they could want to be like them they want to see people like them and they want to see people who are achieving these skills like them so if we could look at that and see if there's some sort of program we can roll out for that i think that would be amazing um but that's all i have for tonight thank you dr danny okay um i was asked to uh mention that on wednesday may 25th the clifton special education parent advisory group will hold a virtual meeting and anyone interested in joining the meeting please email clifton cpac cpag gmail.com for the meeting link that's cliftonsepag gmail.com for the meeting link come chat with members of the district to discuss how to best improve the educational experiences for all students in the special needs community again it's a virtual meeting it's wednesday may 25th at seven o'clock and you can email clifton cpag at gmail.com and other thing i'd just like to say some condolences to the family of deanna set up we just found out she had passed so um sorry for your loss and um i'd like to also thank the speakers who came out and spoke um again you know we do hear we might not agree you know we might not comment on everything um sometimes process things comment on a later date um but definitely thank you you know we live in a democracy and it's great to see people come up and and you know voice their opinions um i also attended the um academic awards dinner it was um really great and uh the one thing that i when i heard the speaker say he listed ten things one of them was perseverance when he talked to the students about the importance of um you know what to sort of take away from life and one of the things that um you know my mom always says and that he said he said um you know forgive those who do you harm you know and you talk about caring and that that's important you know if you harbor that it will eat you up and it will ultimately destroy who you are so i think it's just important to you know as hard as it could be but my mom always said that you know um those that do you harm you know just forgive them because you know we're not perfect and it's a hard thing to do but that's one thing that the speaker um said that sort of resonated with me and that's all i have to say good night uh mr paris thank you mr smith um not going to repeat what a lot of people have said already um i do agree with mr uh kenobi and miss beltran that we should look at this policy for dress code it's probably pretty outdated at this point also just two shameless plugs here one is uh the band is having car wash again saturday so if the weather's nice bring your car out and the community band is having their 20th anniversary concert on saturday at the high school at 2 p.m um proceeds go to the education foundation and to the mustang band alumni association scholarship fund so if you have want to hear some some good music come on out and join us thank you mr abhijava thank you president smith um senior athletic center is june 6th uh and senior scholarship events is june 1st it's great to see a lot of college graduates being photos being put all over facebook that's when we know our high school graduations are right around the corner to the family school 17 and deanna's family i'm sorry for your loss it's a tough thing um speaking to superintendent i know she was battling for a while um but um may god bless our family and give him the patience and um make sure us in peace uh the academic award center was great i'm not gonna reiterate the rest uh as the colleagues safety patrol is phenomenal uh joe and i were able to see um well he had a reason to be there yeah he had his daughter there um uh which is even more interesting but it was great to see that when the buses showed up uh it's like a rock concert and a limo showed up where everybody was like hey let's go and tell their parents can can i go already like they were excited which was great um to toba's discussion um as she was speaking i noticed i looked around the room and there were a lot of judgmental eyes and she didn't see that but i did and we talked about showing tolerance and showing acceptance and while some people didn't say it in words but rolled their eyes and shook her they shook their heads and particularly mumble things under under their breaths when a person is speaking i think is rude and while we can disagree as many have said here tonight i think there's a way to disagree respectfully um so i'm just believe about that which goes to my next thing last meeting something was done and said and i'm gonna quote really quick maybe a few minutes ago i got a little off out of line and i apologize if i offended anyone that's what somebody said last speaker last meeting that considers talking about god and the power of prayer to me god and evil do not go in hand last week i think was the most disgusting act of inciting hatred in this city raising your arm and a sense of pure pure evil in the history of this world okay is nothing but disgusting and disturbing and if anyone thinks of following up with the words if i offended you definitely needs help and intervention or they have a pure soul i'm sorry evil soul because i'm sorry i that was the line for me you can disagree you can talk it out but that pushed the line many know what i'm talking about who are here and others do not and i will not say what was said or what was done and nor do i even imitate it because it was pure disgusting and not only to to a religion which affects and impacts a religion and history of people but the history of this society that's all i had to say thank you vice president daley uh thank you mr president um first of all i'd like to send the cons condolences to the steve family um i'm i know her family very well and um i know the end is long battled that she has so it's um and personally i went through our own in our own family so it's a it's it's a really tough time so my heartfelt condolences goes out to the entire family and um i know very well that she and i know we're going to have a con condolences resolution at the next meeting how much she loved teaching and even despite her seriousness of her illness she made every ever to get into the classroom i'd like to go on i like to talk about last last our last meeting and particularly on the budget i've served on this board for 13 years i've been on a planning war for 20.

and uh we will definitely miss her but recognize her impact on her community there you go and she's got great neighbors well done miss fuller next next person retiring also one kind of near and dear guy got to get trained by her as i took on this current position but vanessa cruz there she is um she does recognize i i have to share this story and those that know cameron will appreciate it um she reckons her funny or most poignant memories is actually working with cameron on a day-to-day basis was pretty funny those of you that knew him will understand what what i'm talking about for those of you that don't know we did have to um send cameron to colorado to work get him kind of out of our area so he'd uh lessen the impact but when i sent him a screenshot of this and gave him this information today i asked my office i said can you predict cameron's response and they're like oh he's gonna say told you i'm great look how great i and his response to the text was told you i'm a legend so i mean he you nailed it he's a great guy and we are definitely uh appreciative of value given to us her memories similar to what we had spoken about earlier nothing to do with the job all about the way she was able to bring her children up and the impact they've made on our community and each other and always exemplified just that beautiful family bond and appreciate you and well done [Applause] next up mr greg mcmahon [Music] there he is [Applause] i'll tell you after reading through all the immediate plans there's one person that i wish i would have made a friendship with and if any of them are here i'll start ken bedell 22 years of service is he here i know bruce conrad mentioned his friendship as being one of the high points bob morrell 17 years he's also retiring this year phoenix academy math teacher a man that you know gave many many hours i know i spent many or never worked at the same school with him but we often taught math and summer school side by side bill clay uh timid gentlemen apparently uh but i mean in all honesty 40 years of dedication to our students and district and i think is known well throughout the community for the impact he's had um in that role linda locke six years um taking granite you know and the role she shared over there with the leadership team um coordinating all the office activities and keeping that school poised and proud of you know probably their mo their one of their most successful accomplishments with their recent wasc accreditation and i know she played a a huge role uh in that as well pamela kenyon uh sitting bull academy is uh celebrating 28 years of her service with us and then connie gilmore 20 years yes connie out of nutrition services she gave us her retirement letter uh just yesterday or day before so recent decision and couldn't be with us tonight but again just a big round of applause and those of you those of you who are recognized tonight keep those children in mind that you saw get those rewards those recognitions and know that you were a huge part of that so thank you okay well that was the uh most important part of the evening and uh we appreciate everybody coming uh you guys just stayed for like two days [Music] we came home monday too i'll tell everybody okay so let's get started here's um so uh we're going to move on to discussion item e presentation on future granite hills high school athletic stadium maybe matthew schulenberg thank you mr raleigh give me one moment to connect to the screen i'll have a presentation on the screen for you this evening at the board's request i've given a couple presentations over the last couple months about the apple valley unified facilities uh certain financing mechanisms for those facilities and related facility improvements i was asked at the last board meeting to focus specifically on the possibility for a future athletic stadium at granite hills high school as we have acquired the property adjacent to granite hills high school um this particular athletic facility there are some considerations that i offer to the board um of course the stadium with the lighted field you have the option of a natural or an all-weather surface for the playing surface i settled on just some numbers there as an example seating for 5000 on the home side is comparable to newton t bass stadium seating for 1500 on the visitor's side is also comparable for a track there's always a natural which would be commonly known as dirt or an all-weather surface rubberized track surface typically athletic facilities stadiums such as this have something they'll call a field house which will house home and visitor team rooms and locker room facilities a snack bar in restroom facilities for those attending the game sufficient parking of course comes along with the athletic stadium or an athletic complex such as this there is of course parking on the west edge of the campus under the solar arrays however i do not believe that would be sufficient for any athletic facility if we were to build one and of course something to consider in the construction of an athletic stadium or something like this that granted is the renovation of the adjacent or the existing athletic fields understanding that a stadium and sufficient parking will not take the entire 40 acres so we have room to do some other things which really are not considered in what i'm going to talk about here in a moment in working these projects we have quite a few different team members that we would have to bring together an architects are really the design professionals they design they engineer these facilities they walk us through getting these plans approved by the division of the state architect for fire life safety structural and access compliance project management they respond to requests for information from contractors during the construction process they answer questions regarding design they and they respond throughout to proposed change orders and then they help us with the dsa closeout process we have uh california professional management is a construction management firm that we're currently contracted with on our district-wide hvac refresh project really the services they provide are invaluable as we do not neces we do not technically have a facilities department in apple valley unified so they handle the project management the coordination of all the contractors and we have one job site superintendent currently and will soon have two job site superintendents because we will be bidding phase two of our hvac project shortly and they really manage the day-to-day they coordinate those contractors they deal with questions they they make sure the contractors are following the rules on the job site keeping not only the contractors and the workers safe but our students and our staff staff safe around any construction sites there's other potential team members we have to hire an inspector of record commonly known as the ior this is somebody we hire to inspect per the dsa improved plans making sure things are constructed per the plan one of the major responsibilities of the ior is to deal with access compliance and ada path of travel making sure the facilities are accessible to anybody that wants to access those facilities there's a lab a record they perform testing they test concrete samples they test soil compaction rates they test bolts to make sure they're strong enough to hold what they were bolting together they they're a very important piece in building to those dsa plants and then of course there's your category contractors the construction companies that actually build whatever we're going to build and in this process through building these large facilities we of course bid these and the contractors we get i put lowest bid i should have put lowest responsive responsible bidder because they have to actually respond and be responsible and be able to prove that they can do this and build these build these types of facilities how much might this cost potential total project costs for an athletic facility at granite hills high school may fall somewhere in the range of 15 to 25 million dollars now that is a very big range and that range is based on what options the board would decide to move forward with how much seating all weather surface natural surface all-weather track dirt track how big of a parking lot are we going to build stick built structures for the field house or are they going to be portable buildings that are installed on site lots of different project options which can create these significant variations and one example in terms of field lighting for these athletic stadiums a recent project that i was able to discuss with somebody the field lighting alone was 1.5 million dollars that's just for four towers and some lights and of course the electrical that goes along with that so the and the environment we're in right now unfortunately construction is very expensive but contractors are also very busy so there's a lot of factors that can contribute to this cost hence such a large range the next question how do you pay for it if you recall in february i talked about general obligation bonds and in fact uh recently the board approved a resolution and we are moving forward with exploring the feasibility of a general obligation bond on the november 2024 ballot typical uses of course are facility improvements academic and athletic and or to discharge existing cop debt service which the district does currently have a cop a certificate of participation again you'll recognize this slide again from my february presentation and talk briefly about a certificate of participation that is non-voter approved debt that is essentially the district puts up a school site as collateral to borrow money and then we use our general fund or an identified revenue stream to make those debt service payments and these again are typically issued for capital improvement projects one of the options absent of a geo bond would be to issue a new cop to finance the construction of an athletic facility at granite hills high school we would borrow i would suggest we borrow against the remainder of our rda revenue stream that revenue stream is currently supporting the debt service on our existing cop but not utilizing the entire revenue stream if you look on the bottom of the slide and mr carty of piper sandler our district financial advisor prepared an illustrative an example again for illustrative purposes only but an example if the district were to issue a 20 million dollar certificate of participation the debt service at current rates would be approximately 1.2 million dollars per year for 30 years so it would cost about 36 million dollars to borrow twenty seven hundred thousand of that debt service each year would would take up the remaining rda revenue stream unfortunately we would experience about a half a million dollar per year for thirty 30-year impact to our general fund operating budget in order to make those debt service payments again this was an illustrative this is an example that mr carty prepared if the board chooses to move forward with this type of financing mechanism to facilitate the design and construction of an athletic facility of course these numbers might vary as the economic climate shifts and interest rates change and evolve does the board have any questions any questions for matt appreciate it matt um certainly that's that's what i was looking for uh just a little bit more details and um i'll take it uh we'll agenda something later on so put it in your back pocket for now okay not too not too uh not too deep in your pocket though thank you okay thank you yes go ahead wilson microphone yes and then we're going to need to turn our mics on um i was reminded by kylie uh when we start voting here too so i'll just turn them on now yeah the green light needs to be um if i may provide a brief comment i think the board for i need to i i in my life in my career as an engineer i also fight for i thought financing in my opinion that we before we go any further we need to perhaps form a citizen advisory committee that's my thinking so that we can get input from the community okay okay thank you all right with that uh we're moving on um kylie do we have any public comments we do okay uh first up uh karen sabers good evening sorry i was late i was finishing up some seniors myself no problem i just want to carry on with the positivity of the night and i wanted to give you an update on a buddha and what we've been doing in the last week and a half we have been going around to the different school sites taking crumble cookies to them for teacher appreciation we did or we were able to get a grant in order to do this it has been so uplifting to get out there and not only see the teachers but also the principals they have been so gracious the teachers have been gracious we have a really really good group of teachers in this district um it's been a very positive experience we've gotten feedback um i'd like to read one email to you that we have a receipt we've received several but i'll read this one i am a new teacher at sand date at sandia mariana academies a former administrator and educator i believe the power and importance of the work you do to support our teachers what a wonderful gesture and i was so impressed to meet you thank you for your kind treat and we look forward to working together so it's these kind of comments throughout the last week and a half we still have three schools to visit that have uplifted us and shed a positive light on what we do and i'd like to also thank the miss nelson our superintendent the assistant superintendents for their support in uplifting us as well it is very much appreciated as well as the principles it is very much appreciated so thank you karen [Applause] jacob kleinsmith come on up we've seen a lot of jacob lately so all right good evening i would like to start talking about the state seal of civic engagement and start by taking one and passing it down sure so all right um in 2012 the assembly bill 815 established the california state seal by literacy the seal by literacy encouraged students to join world language programs and effectively revived them nationwide in california 4 800 students were awarded this honor in 2018-2019 school year another great opportunity has come our way with the establishment of the california state seal of civic engagement through assembly bill 37 the purpose of the state seal of civic engagement is to encourage and create pathways for peoples in elementary and secondary schools to become civically engaged in democratic governmental institutions at the local state and national levels not only do we believe that the state seal of civic engagement would lead to more engagement in civic oriented programs such as asb key club hosa ffa mock trial sun devil high school democrats young americans for freedom etc but it would also encourage students to be more involved in their communities outside of school the best way to proudly prepare our students for their futures is to inspire them to maintain the integrity of our society and to seek the change they desire in the world through civic engagement studies show that the earlier person becomes engaged in civics the more likely they are to continue that engagement the fact of the matter is that we the students are the future and as scary as that may seem sound to some what the future looks like will depend on the support from our schools as justice stephen stephen bryers once said america's public schools are the nurseries for democracy thank you don't leave yet [Applause] so i understand that you got a few scholarships and ms nelson told me that you were an outstanding student because we've seen you back and forth and i saw you at another awards ceremony we got some scholarships what's your plans i'd like to hear that you got a couple minutes uh well i'll be going to bbc for two years i'll be going to bbc for two years uh then after i'm going to go for a history degree and hopefully in five years become a history teacher well i think the district's pretty proud that they produced a great student like you and i have a feeling you're going to go far in life so and you know to take up a topic like this at your age and so well written and makes such great sense so good luck to you thank you thank you so much [Applause] okay superintendent comments so i'm going to address the state seal of bi-literacy so the board knows that we are actively engaged in moving forward with the state seal of bi-literacy or i'm sorry with the state seal of civic engagement we were one of the first in san bernardino county to take on the state seal of bi-literacy we find value in it for our students but it's a lengthy process with an application and several things that we have to do and i believe tonight we have a resolution on the agenda for which is the first step to move forward with this so i really appreciate that um jacob showed up showed the support for this um because he's actually exiting our system but this is about the kids that are coming along next um so i i want to acknowledge that the second thing is for um the board because it does impact them as well um this past week well for several months now we've been working on a two-factor authentication not me personally but mr buchanan and his team in it and this is all about um lessening our risk for a data breach and so if you are using google under your awsd account or aries which does not impact any of you there is a two factor authentication so we'll have to support the it department has been doing after school supports and going in and helping and so they're here to help if you're trying to get in and can't and you get some crazy thing that says you need a code because you do so i just wanted to mention that because it went live today district-wide okay and finally i just think that it's always wonderful to celebrate all of our students like we did tonight and our staff that is retiring i know we usually separate that but because of um the small number of retirees this year after a large number last year we felt like putting them together with the students was very important so after a difficult year it's great to end this way thank you serenae wilson i comment i um sorry yeah i appreciate the board for having patience with me that i missed a couple of meetings and as i said i was lucky that my youngest daughter dr caso at apple high school quiet in berkeley i went on to indiana purdue dental school and she discovered an injury that i suffered almost 60 years ago she was able to work with her periodontists and their two surgeries and i'm almost there experienced thank you for the both of the patients with me thank you wilson maria um i have to say thank you to all the graduating students who are leaving us this year it's been a challenging you you guys had to endure covet and came out on top congratulations to the graduating class and also congratulations to the two school uh presidents who presented to us today and shared with us the wonderful things that they are going to be doing when this is over and for you sir i am particularly interested in in your state seal of civic engagement as you can tell everybody here in this room has an accent but me so and i happen to really find this fascinating because when i arrived in this country i could speak seven languages and to be able to speak those languages you get to understand the different differences in cultures and to be respectful of those cultures and and their language choices so i'm kind of looking forward to how this is going to evolve in the district and the joys that children will have when they leave and to be able to embrace the different languages and have a better understanding of why people speak the way they do i still tell people that i i before i say something it sounds almost like i'm very slow in my language and it's because i'm translating it from one language to the others for it to come out as english and it's always a challenge but thank you so much for all of your research and the willingness to even come out and share with us today and of course uh congratulations to all the teachers uh who are retiring and quite a few of them have a history with me and i shared one because it was just very impactful for me that somebody would open their door and let me stay in their house rent free for three weeks and i thought that was very pleasant and of course those teachers that we celebrated this last week going from school to school to recognize their years of service i am really really really honored to to be sitting here and and to serve all of you thank you again thank you mariette christopher so tonight i have a quasi-brief message of sincere congratulations and and gratitude uh first off congratulations to all the students who participated and placed in skillsusa chopped our hosa competitions our ffa out at the fair coming this week and of course to all of our athletics teams on the outstanding effort in job not only do you make your yourself proud your school proud but you make our entire community proud that we have students who are so engaged uh congratulations again to all of our high school graduates we hope that you go on and you do outstanding things but remember apple valley is your hometown and we need you and we'll put you up and we'll find you jobs so please come back and then thank you to all of our staff this has not been an easy year by any means we know that you have gone well beyond 150 percent effort this year we hope that you are ready for summer and have great plans to rejuvenate and to enjoy time with your families and to fill your glass all the way to the tippy top because we're looking forward to having you all back here next year so with that thank you to our board members thank you to everyone i know we still have two more meetings but with it being the end of the school year thank you chris dennis uh congratulations to all those who are honored here tonight as a way to expedite this meeting i have no other comments [Laughter] thanks dennis i just want to mention uh looking forward to the graduation ceremonies coming up and hopefully it won't be windy and cold but usually it is but uh says hot oh it's gonna be hot okay okay we have no public hearings uh no special meetings at this time uh we have a discussion item adopt resolution authorizing necessary appropriate action to declare rural status for purposes of exemption from education code 46 148 which is basically start times so so moved second okay we have a motion uh by christopher second by dennis all in favor aye all right any opposition hearing i've served four boards and in general our public bodies are held in less esteem as every year goes by particularly our congress and our legislature uh of course the fighting between the left and the right and who's this it's it's really a disservice disservice and that goes to uh trust and what's the public trust is needed in a public body so during my tenure here and every place that i've served i take that very seriously kind of something i got from my my dad and when i sit on a board or or a body um i don't think of it as myself i think that as i'm i'm a representative of the town and how i behave and how things are conducted reflects either positively and negatively to the citizens and it's so important in these times because the trust is deteriorating before our very eyes about our public so with that if you don't have trust uh you're in big trouble at the last meeting um it was i was pretty abhorrent about the how the whole process unfolded um i've shared with the board i've sent uh asked for a number of bodies to give some feedback public bodies for the state and advisory opinion as well as to the county superintendent which i've shared with all the board members here here's the because i could talk about five hours on this stuff here's the issue we had we passed a preliminary budget in march approximately six weeks passed between the the final budget special interest group comes up uh there was eleven speakers ten of them were members of the um teachers association and they advocated for a raise may i continue for a few minutes uh i really don't like to take the liberty but i think it's important for the public and my colleagues to hear this to change something is one thing we went through the committee process we put it forth if the administration had an issue with the committees i think that was obligatory upon the the administration to say something to not only the committee but to the board you know we don't really agree with the committee and we need to do xyz we got a approximately 14.2 million dollar raise uh increase in state aid and i know it goes to different places if we were to vet this properly and this is the crux of why i'm very upset about this we needed to vet that in public or really work it out not do it at the 11th hour after a special interest group comes in here and advocates for it this is what i the process should have went like this the first question i would have for the administration okay how did you divide up that 14.2 million dollar increase what were your priorities are these priorities you need this year the priorities and when you add on stuff that's in the operating budget personnel in particular that has a carry forward cost we need to know if it's sustainable we can pay for it this year pay for next year we may not be able to sustain it the following years all those questions i think the administration would welcome as the board should welcome we did not do our due diligence and it was just a horror i got and i'm one not one that has people call me up but i've ran into more people that come up to me and say what a disgrace that whole process was so if the administration wants positions i'm more than willing to listen and to work with them to obtain that goal however the way it slip shod steam i mean we just kicked the voters in this town the teeth i'm one that always trusted in the voters i voted to keep the election in april and allow the voters to vote on the budget there was proffering of uh by many speakers that says oh the public voted for 160 68 million dollar there they they want us to spend money on education no no no no that's carp blanche we did not tell the voters you vote for this it's carp launch that's not the way we go so we didn't do our due diligence we didn't properly vet it it was the last minute it was like a free-for-all it was a total embarrassment like i said i can go on but i'm going to leave it at that point i have i don't blame any members i think you all got caught up in them in the mid in the moment but uh i'm not going to let this sit because i think it's it's race we it's so so important that we continue to have our trust otherwise they're not going to support because if you go if you start to go above the two percent at some period of time you have to go to the voters and the voters are going to say well you screw this down here why should i vote for your budget it becomes that simple trust is the cornerstone if we are going to be successful thank you mr daly um [Applause] i'd like to uh congratulate uh jen algieri and laura lauer and their entire team on such a fantastic job they did with the scholarship dinner um it was a great turnout raised a lot of money for scholarship for kids so jen worked so hard on that dinner as laura did they spent countless hours they're volunteers um and um why i don't have a list of our entire team um i have to commend specifically a a faculty member of ours that went above and beyond the time and the effort and the just expertise in his field and what he does um i hope you all had an opportunity to see the display when you came in uh to the event that um or our teacher at ccms mr jeff labriola did an outstanding job um on that and i have to commend him greatly and the entire team for raising a lot of money for a great scholarship uh dr robertosi um also to sam sam i have to thank you there's just so many events that you you have to be at and uh with the end of the year coming there's so many events that you're gonna be at um you're just always there to get the picture to get the story to get it out onto social media to let the public know what great things are happening in clifton so i commend you for the the amount of time and the hours that you put in um and having to attend these things last night uh two nights ago at the uh at the academic awards you know you were right there and you got some great photos and that's what we want we want to showcase our kids our kids do great things and and i just have to commend you on the great job that you're doing and then now you have to be here to to do this as well i thank you the academic awards dinner as everyone spoke about what a great success it was uh sushnep and as i know rsue peters and her entire team uh to pull off an event like that um many people tell sue that she should go into the uh the catering business and probably make more money than she does as a as a vice principal but uh we don't want her to do that she does a great job uh at putting this together and putting a team together um to put that type of event and 1200 some odd people there um it just was a great success so i uh i commend her and her entire team uh for such a great job these are some great things that are happening in the district um i usually don't like to uh to answer things because people in the public know who i am and what i do and what i've done and uh 25 000 of them came out and voted for me a couple years ago so people really know what's going on um the shenanigans that take place here took place uh with the president that was before me took place with the president ahead of them took place with other people and you know i guess until you actually sit in the chair and know how to do it um i guess it's easy to to throw daggers at people i receive numerous emails from the public and board members i do my best as a volunteer to get those emails answered i don't need to owe anyone an explanation i'm not a paid employee i don't know anyone exclamation but as a good person as a christian i tell the truth if someone doesn't want to abide listen to that i don't care so when i told someone that i forgot to sit hit the send button it was the truth and it happened one time one time not to mention the 9000 other emails i've received that i did reply to but again i do the best that i can as a volunteer uh in this position um and i think the rest of the board knows that that i answer you in a timely uh manner um you know when i had to go look through my logs again and go through everyone's requests um you know and i know a statement was made tonight about that we're wasting taxpayers money we should be going to the to the estate for opinions because it's free but there are certain board members that that lead the pack here on contacting the uh the board attorney um so if anyone wants to see uh how many times they've actually done that i have all the requests uh in writing so um you know our board attorney is here for the board and she does a phenomenal job um her bills are not extensive i i've you know as the longest member sitting on the board of education i've been through other attorneys i know what fees are out there um and i've told her to her face it's not just because she's sitting here but um she could charge us a lot more money than she does um there's many times when she doesn't even charge the board so um i you know when i look at the bills each month and i see that they're in line um i've discussed with my vice president mr daley on that as well um in no way do we feel any of her charges have been excessive um and she tries to do the right thing uh you know she's caught in a in a tough situation here you know board member asks to speak to her she feels it's appropriate to answer it she answers it and then we don't want to pay her for doing that you know i i don't see how you know we we can disagree on certain things but if someone performs the job and does the duty they deserve to get paid for it so i just hope going forward i will continue to do what i've been doing to allow board members to speak to the attorney um beltron made a very good suggestion that from now on we'll make sure that uh ms gutierrez sends out her answer that she answers that board member on to the entire board so everyone is on the the up and up on that um but i have true faith in her that if something was asked of her that was not appropriate for this board she would tell the person that it's not appropriate and would not answer them so i i have no uh i have no problems with that um you know as board president you know and i checked with other board presidents you know it's it's sometimes it's not nice to sit here and ask people to uh to remain orderly and do things in an orderly process but that's what the chair does um it has no bearing upon any individual or any cause that they have it's a it's a um a process that has to be followed and uh you know i you get ridiculed for following the process um like i said the many people that contact me um you know i hate using that as mr daley said you know they know what this is all about they know what we're doing in this district they know the leadership that this board has had and uh mr daley and i uh have a great team uh at the top we put a tremendous amount of time in um and uh we we feel it it truly shows to the board and the public knows the truth so i don't have to continue on that but um we are going to uh go to executive session we have uh two i i'm sorry i keep doing it new business sorry anyone for new business mr awad yeah i asked you in the beginning of the meeting you advised me that's new business also the board attorney um can we look into policy about alcohol being brought into school buildings or the administration building you mean you want wanted to be home no no no no i'm muslim i don't drink i swear no um just because a certain incident happened i'm just curious to know well if there's a policy in place yeah it's not allowed yeah we should have a policy on but we'll serve this yeah we can look which which exactly it is yeah something i need to know i guess i could tell um since we're gonna go tick for tat here um last meeting a member of the public dropped off for me um an alcoholic thing that he she made for me to be consumed outside of this meeting so it was just dropped off to me and then i brought her home obviously i wasn't consuming it in the building outside the building or on the days you would have seen it it was like a jello item just to clarify it was actually one board member handing another board member and it's on camera so if i decide god forbid i want to bring coke or weed and give it to another board member that's allowed yeah alcohol is not allowed it's not allowed i'm just saying let's let's let's you can either have yourself or your wife right the ethics charges against me that's fine we'll uh we'll get the uh we'll get the exact policy out to everybody on that uh so can i can i review what policy stuff we have right now in case i miss anything um dress code which is uh sex ed which is called sex side which is the comprehensive health and physical education zero one seven four login process which we'll look at also i can't excuse me she's talking to me all right well you both could take it outside um which we could look at that mirrors accountability regulations which even mirrors the accountability regulations as ms gutierrez said it may mirror each other right is that what you mentioned about which policy zero one seven conversations going on zero one seven four everyone forgot what the superintendent said well kindness is good for our hearts zero one tonight zero one seven login process log in log and process you said that there's a mirror of the accountability regulations correct so that's what i'd like to review um and the one thing i would like to add well and one mr watson about the alcohol meetings um and what i like what to add and this is just because i notice not just the man to my right but others that cell phone board members during meetings whether while it's board business or not board business it may give the impact or the impression that it is sport business and not knowing because of opmah what public opinion has to offer on certain conversations during the days and on the dais so i'd like to add that myself and we have it but we need to review it [Music] anybody else anything else for the order new business i have something yes um i used my phone to adjust my hearing aids because when the mics go on it kills me when i have it up to four if i can't hear someone that's my phone um i have i wear hearing aids i lost my hearing during covid um [Music] there was a there was a statement made by a member of the audience and i wrote it down and now i lost it hold on um that there was a presentation that was um um there was a presentation that was uh rescheduled and he thanked a board member and he also thank the board so i'd like to know what what that conversation was because i didn't get anything on rescheduling of any presentations and also um i'd like to know who the spokesperson for the board is um i can uh since my name was rhoda by mr bunciak so mr brunsiak reached out to me as a board member and said hey um 7 30 board member and this presentation overlap i said i do not know anything about that i snapshot of that sent it to the superintendent i think thereafter mr superintendent an email went out and said it's six for six to seven and he responded back to me and responded to him and he said thank you never responded to him i sent it straight to the to the superintendent who is the ceo of our district and has actually has to deal with the public but never responded to him and i think you want to speak so glad yes thank you mr smith just to clarify the change was made prior to any board member coming to me we had scheduled these parent presentations back in december we pick our board meeting dates at the january reorg so when we realized unfortunately a little late that um the board meeting was the same night as the first parent presentation we just adjusted the time instead of six to seven thirty we made it from six to seven and so no one would think that we didn't offer enough opportunities we added an additional date so i'm not sure how mr brunsiak was involved mr abu drabba did ask me the question and i told him that we had already made the change so that's but i did ask a question who is the spokesperson for the board i i wanted the public to hear this who is the spokesperson for the board generally speaking the spokesperson for the board is the board president thank you i believe you have a policy on that yeah um i i just wanted it to be reiterated thank you you're welcome so for the good order going back to my question everybody has anthony for policy and i didn't target this man to my right and nobody else but does anybody have anything else in my pocket to add to policy i'm a big target stop talking so the first tuesday of every month is policy does anybody have any order i will ask again probably in a week or two just to make sure just the the dress code that's called yeah correct we will review i'll ask one more time i'll review one more time we will review dress code review 0174 review the cell phone open board members during board meetings and then also what this gentleman to my right hand it's also another policy that speaks to the about um um policies being amended and they could be amended first reading um so i'd like that discussed as well i'm sorry repeat one more time please there is a policy that speaks about um uh policies being amended it's uh it speaks to the um the we are allowed to amend the policy on the first reading there was a big discussion a couple meetings ago that that wasn't the case it's under oh 131 item five thank you mr paris you said item five item five thank you anybody else for the good order we already have the other one which is the other one just like we went over five things the one the one that you tabled that you didn't want to seven zero four yeah we have one list yes i did okay just wanna make sure all right thank you dr danny yeah i i was just wondering um if it's possible the uh june 23rd meeting to to make it june 22nd i have my school graduation it's part of my requirement after work that evening so i you know from my school district and i can't attend that june 23rd so i didn't know if it was you know if everybody could make june 22nd to change it if if you can't it's all right i'll keep the 23rd judy no doesn't work i mean if it doesn't work for you know i mean i i would appreciate it yeah motion to change the june 23rd meeting to june 22nd second second my mr abu drabbo um yeah i i just i think administration needs some time to make sure it doesn't you could you just conflict with anything that's going on in the district your staff all that stuff right then i'll withdraw the motion and make it next next meeting just did we just check maybe yeah just um i don't see anything on the calendar but let me just double check that there's nothing uh and we also need to check with the city and okay you know we don't like to have a meeting if they're having a planning board meeting or right and although the tv is not working right now hopefully it'll be working by then so all right by next meeting i'll be able to tell you if you tell me then i won't bring it up if it's not you know what i mean because i haven't done that no that's not it two it's two june second yeah 23rd yeah there's two that's why there's graduation right it's just a commitment to the school it's part of i have to be there for grad it's like i can't tell them that i have them you tell them give me the number all right so administration will check on that and then bring it back to us for uh for the next meeting is there any other new business okay seeing none the board uh will convene into executive session we have a contract matter and a personnel matter uh action will be taken motion to go into executive systems mr aberdrive was second by mr awad oh yeah uh we planned to be in there probably 40 minutes in that area all right the board met an executive session to discuss a contract matters and a um employee matter um so a roll call on uh was the p i mean excuse me roll call back from the executive session mr abhijabo here mr awad here miss bassford yeah miss beltran here mr kanova here dr danny here mr paris here vice president ellie here president smith here we have a quorum okay um motion uh to approve p 28 is it correct motion by mr alvarez second by mr awad any discussion roll call please mr abbado mr awad yes miss basford abstain miss beltran yes mr canova yes dr danny true um yes i'm sorry mr paris yes vice president daley yes president smith yes who she carries casing no other order of business motion to a journalist ocean second drive will save my mr rewind any objection adjourned you

we'll check back outside it was between east stroudsburg and fdu i don't know which one he chose so we'll we'll follow up and we'll get back to you all right moving right along to students who will be attending hbcus here to speak for a few minutes about her experience attending hampton university is one of our assistant principals miss jarrett all right guys good morning i can't see anything i can't see anything test test all right i can't see anything so i don't know where everyone is sitting i want to say congratulations to everyone this is my favorite time of the year because i know that you guys are graduating and moving on and the world is out there for you to explore i did attend hampton university historically black college and university once i stepped on the campus of hampton i knew that it was for me it felt like home immediately and i am so happy with my decision that i'm always going to be an advocate for hbcus i know several period i know several of you i know several of you are moving south that's one of the things that i would say i fell in love with the weather i well i like new jersey but as soon as i go back to virginia it's like a different a different atmosphere so if you're moving to north carolina maryland morgan state howard elizabeth city state bowie university clark atlanta and university of maryland east ensure best of you best of luck to you one of the things i will say that in your experience as an hbcu alumni you will definitely make lasting friendships wherever you go doesn't matter which hbc hbcu attend when you go somewhere and you just let people know you went to an hbcu it's like you've gained another family member so i hope that you guys also feel the same when you get your degree another thing that i hope that you guys understand is that when you go to an hbcu there is a rich tradition there and you are carrying on the legacy if you if you're not sure hbcus were established after for the most part the civil war when a lot of institutions would not accept persons of color and even your native americans so at hampton we have or we had a strong native american population as well so you will definitely be part of a legacy and you'll be carrying on a tradition of just what it means to be an hbcu grad this next set of recommendations is for anyone moving on when you get to college you're going to have so much freedom and responsibility at the same time i hope that you get your system early find your rhythm and understand that once your professors give you your syllabus you have been told okay if you don't read it that is your problem because you've been told so i hope that you understand that early on make sure you establish a a dedicated note-taking system uh first few days of class you're not going to know how do i organize and that was one of the things i had a friend show me how to organize my notes and it just carried me through the four years so you definitely have to have a a serious note-taking system otherwise you're going to be all over the place there may be times where you're going to question whether or not you belong you're going to sit in class and you're going to hear people and they may sound like a genius and they may be but you are deserving and if you're not sure what to do you ask someone so don't be afraid don't feel like what am i gonna do i don't be long you do belong you're more than qualified you're deserving okay make sure you take good care remember no one's going to be there to wake you up some cases you don't have to go to class so make sure you take good care make sure you're eating well working out whatever it is for you but make sure you take good care get involved early that was i would say a regret of mine i really didn't get involved till my senior year missed out on a lot but definitely get involved early and then finally have fun the four years will go by fast you're going to recognize it you're getting your college degree so all right congratulations everybody [Applause] couple couple things be safe tonight okay be safe at the prom be safe driving to the prom don't text stay off the phones don't be distracted when you're driving to and from the prom remember remember there's tomorrow and this is just one day and the best advice that i can give you about college or your life after high school is to follow your dreams what you're passionate about find something that you're passionate about whether it's medicine okay perricone's on his way so find what you're passionate about maybe it's art maybe it's cooking maybe it's education maybe it's nursing taking care of people whatever you like to do find that and take the next and a couple years to find out what you like to do and then pursue that as your career when i graduated high school i was a lot like a lot of you i was undecided i went to kutztown university undecided and after a year i had to pick a major and i chose political science i thought i wanted to study law and become a lawyer but when i found when i graduated college i found out what lawyers really do and i didn't like that and i decided to take a job working with students with special needs at mercer county special services and i loved it and i went back to school at nights at uh the college in new jersey back then it was called trenton state college this was like 1991 and a lot of you weren't even born then um [Applause] so you know you find what you like to do and then i and i i started teaching and coaching and i loved it and you know that's what life is about it's about trying new things and finding what you love and doing that you know that's the most important thing and the best advice for those of you that are going to college your first semester is going to be the hardest when you get there you're going to have to for the first time figure things out on your own your your parents won't be there you know miss jarrett won't be there to remind you to get to class miss cons isn't going to come follow you and get you out of the bathroom [Applause] all right you're going to have to do it on your own [Applause] and listen listen like miss jared said those professors they have classes this just just listen up for one minute the professors especially some of the co you know the classes the larger classes are going to be the size of this auditorium and you're going to have to sit in there and figure it out so the most important thing i think for your first year of college your first semester is really managing your time you're gonna have to manage your time to study you're gonna have to manage your time to get to class to eat to have fun all that's gonna you're gonna have to create a schedule for yourself here in high school you the schedule is given to you you know you have class school starts at 7 45 you stroll your seniors stroll in around 805 usually but in college you're going to be missing 20 minutes of class if you do that so schedule your classes at times you know like if you're a morning person you like to be up early schedule them in the morning if you're an afternoon person schedule them in the afternoon but get yourself a schedule and a routine because that's going to be probably the most important thing for you as you move ahead is mr perricone here okay all right so i'm going to turn it over to mr parrakone he's going to give you some advice about the workforce and let's give him a big round of applause [Applause] what's going on guys i'm happy to be here to talk to you before you guys all graduate and um i just want to give a little bit give me a little bit of applause how many people had me during high school for a business class all right so you guys all know that um i ran my own business and i do teach uh at graduate school and undergraduate school at centenary college up in hackettstown and i'm here to talk to you guys about a pretty important issue that employers have in 2022 and it really comes down to professional development so do you guys know the difference between hard skills and soft skills all right i hear yes i hear no this is what i want you guys to really focus on during the summer time you know understand that your soft skills and hard skills are really what employers are looking for all right so once you identify what they are understand what needs to be improved that's that's my advice to you over the summer time so let me for those of you that don't know hard skills they're part of the skill set that's required in the job so when you get a job you know you went to school you have training you have specific skills that's what you're hired to do so either you know coding you know product management skills you have digital marketing skills those are the hard skills in the other term we have something called soft skills this is where employers say that their employees are lacking they're lacking soft skills and i can see the scot the soft skills being lacked here at the high school all right so what are soft skills they're non-technical skills that relate to how you work they include how you interact with your colleagues with your peers how you solve problems how you manage your work mr shamil is talking about getting on time time management i mean time management are you handing things on time are you meeting the projected time schedule are you showing up to work on time soft skills are you a self-motivator all right what motivates you if you've had my classes we talked about these things are you a good problem solver are you a good critical thinker can you resolve conflict these are all soft skills do you know how to negotiate how many people know how to negotiate okay so keep in mind guys these are just some of the things are you a good leader so you know work on your soft skills and if you don't know what they are guys you see soft skills are like like your personal skills how do you relate with people you know and you know i have a little bit of i had a presentation that i was going to do but um you know here's some hard facts all right employers these are hard facts guys so listen up employers can teach you hard skills but employers expect you to know soft skills soft skills really can't be taught all right you could take classes and you could try to improve on them but a lot of times it's from within and this is what i want you guys to remember generally people lose their jobs due to the lack of soft skills all right so when we look at uh some of the following things that i have here is this you listen to what i'm saying and see if this is you do you possess this do you have the ability to work as a team

to order with the pledge of allegiance of america and to the republic for which it nation stands god indivisible with liberty and justice good evening and welcome to the regular may meeting of the greek castle school board first item on the agenda is adjustments to the agenda yep so i don't have any adjustments to the agenda for this month okay next item public comments regarding anything on the agenda tonight are there any comments about agenda items okay here we go next item is recognitions mr gibboni yep so as is customary students of the month we want to start with red path okay so mrs b nominated quentin stidh as student of the month because he has shown so much growth as a kindergarten student he comes to school with a positive attitude and is always wanting to help his peers when they are having a difficult moment in one specific example quentin noticed that a student from another classroom was sad and crying during recess he asked the student to play with him he was able to build a friendship with that student and still continues to play with him during recess each day he is always willing to help others who are hurt or feeling sad and it has been a pleasure to watch quentin grow and learn both in class and with his peers [Applause] there you go okay mr mcqueen it's my pleasure to introduce to you ali salzman ellie is a first grader in laura brentlinger's classroom and mrs brentlinger nominated ellie writing ellie has been such a bright star in my classroom this year her heart is so kind and she's been a huge helper to me with another student who needs a good example she has shown loving caring and selfless behaviors throughout the year and we really appreciate that for kids this age to be caring and selfless is is so notable ellie has worked very hard to improve her reading her writing and her math skills she has been a true gift to our class ellie salzman [Applause] mr welts i'm sorry mrs rhodes and mrs sasebo my apologies so usually mrs rhodes introduces the student of the month but dean and i have a history because okay so as you know i do some of the discipline at school and when dean was a third grader dean had a running place in my office nearly every day in third grade and i would call home to mandy his mother remember and i said mandy one of these days i'm gonna call home with a really good report for you so i called her last week and i said mandy today is the day today i know i'm like no this is really good today so dean was nominated by his teacher mrs fowler who is so proud of him so i'm going to read to you what mrs fowler said are you ready i am so proud of how much dean has grown both academically and behaviorally during his fifth grade year dean comes to school every day and puts forth his best effort during class he asks great questions and thoughtfully contributes to our classroom discussions we affectionately refer to him as our resident fact checker dean has demonstrated good citizenship by being respectful to others and being accountable for his actions his sense of humor has made our class interesting but in a good way it has been a pleasure to have dean coeffer in class this year i look forward to watching him continue to grow and succeed good job [Applause] so hi good evening our green council middle school student was not able to make it tonight but i wanted to recognize claire langdock her teachers have said she is amazing very studious and sweet claire is always polite and prepared she is kind to others and respectful of her teachers she is a hard worker that takes her education seriously she wants to ensure that she is prepared for all assessments and always looks for places to improve if she struggles claire langdon hi our student also had other obligations tonight with some sporting events we have chase carrington he was nominated by mr hankey chase carrington exemplifies a positive mental attitude he's never seen without a smile on his face chase brightens the room with his positivity and encouragement for his fellow students even when faced with difficult challenges i think he had four surgeries this year or frustrating circumstances chase always rises to the occasion with a smile on his face and good-natured comment it was a pleasure to nominate chase carrington for the student star award for attitude [Applause] okay next item on the agenda is approval of the consent agenda which consists of meeting minutes from the special meeting of october 18th and the regular board meeting minutes from april 18th and april 25th the allowance of claims financial report and personnel reports part one and two that are hanging on the door and on the website so this is wrong hello everyone i hope so okay um for the month of april we're gonna look at three payrolls in april your first payroll was dated april 1st and the total payroll for that payroll was 386 seventy 0596.71 you'll see a bit more detail in your reports this month accounts so if we have any questions about that you can let me know and we can we can address those questions but you're just gonna see a lot more detail on these reports along with that april 1st uh 2022 ⚗ AI-reconstructed · cite from original above
then the second regular payroll in april was dated april 1 15 and total payroll 440.29 and along with that came the accounts payable of 126 209.68 and then the third payroll for april was dated april 29 2022 for a total payroll of hundred fifty 444 dollars and thirty two cents and for the payroll taxes and retirement one forty one ninety dollars and four cents did anyone have any questions about the payrolls for april okay well we'll just go ahead and move on then to the prepays prepays are dated um april marks yeah april 1 through april 30th 2022 total pre-pays for the month of april hundred fourteen dollars and thirty five cents and the reason that's a little bit higher this month is we had that payment to piney for the um redpath dear metal hvac project that was the payment for that this month and we did that in a pre-pay so we got that paid timely did anyone have any questions about the pre-pays for april nope okay well we'll go ahead and move on to the claims dated today may 23 2022 i can point a couple things out here we um obviously were we were working on buying the student devices new devices for tz we did that we have the total payment in full this month that was actually paid out of one of the gear grants and then the emergency connectivity funds so that was something a bit unusual this month did anyone scan through here and have a question about any of the claims stated today i'll be curious what the comparison of course the school's ending but the fuel expense yes it has gone up not just fuel yeah the fuel has gone up and and of course utilities electric gas yeah unfortunately um the total claims dated today may 23rd is 580 841.35 are we ready to move on to the finance report for the fund report okay all right uh total um and education fund the end of april 2022 2 million 260 054 dollars and 23 cents balance in operations 883 258.76 if you go back to page five you'll see the total for all funds is six million seven hundred forty eight thousand six hundred thirty two dollars and eighty eight cents and next in your package you're gonna see the depository statement you're gonna see the balance in bank two is the first one and the second is for bank nine we've kept a little bit in there okay we want to keep that account open just in case we would have to use it i didn't want to completely close it out yet having questions about that i'd be happy to answer that the operations account you see the balance there and then you had asked about the tcu that um the uh the share plus account that we went ahead and opened up now you're going to see the balance there and it's less seven dollars okay we did have a wire transfer fee we had some other fees i was able to get removed but i could not get that one removed but next month you're going to see that balance go up because we're obviously going to have some interest that's going to show up next month so we're going to see some profit there next month and then you're also going to see the outstanding checks for each bank and then at the bottom you're going to see april 2022 fund balance for all uh bank balances is six million seven hundred forty eight thousand 000 630 288 if you go back to page five of your fund report you'll see that those book balance to the penny and then lastly in your finance packet you'll see the expenditures for bond 2021 for the month of may did anyone have any questions about any of those expenditures this month no okay so july 2021 through april 2022 total expenditures was 3 million 379 343 29 we've got our total expenditures for may so our total expenditures to date out of uh bond 2021 is 3 million 859 984 64.

hear that the audits went well so thank you for all your hard work thank you i have to tell you it was a lot of work and i'm really really glad that we did it because it paid off so and thank you all for your support and and um hanging in there with us while we got things cleaned up we appreciate it a public report will be made available at a later date right okay great thank you very much uh can i get a motion to approve the consent agenda solo second motion a second any discussion ready for the questions hearing none all in favor all right all opposed motion passes next item on the agenda is reports and the first being from sister assistant sister superintendent so next month i'll have data for you i'd like to go over the impact of the after school programs and we'll have ilearn and i read and we'll have nice graphs and be able to dive into that and hopefully our county schools will be released too because right now we just have our own score so it'd be nice to see that in line of our peers so as you know the middle school after school program is wrapping up year four of our grant we're closing that out so i'm gonna make sure we look at the impact that that program has had and enable all the families that we were able to serve over the four years um so as we're wrapping that up our elementary program we're just finishing year one so looking at that data too i'm excited to see what results that presents um we will be moving the after school program from elite to tc just because our we're going to be working with a smaller budget through a different grant and so we have a facility rental that we we use with our partnership with with elite um and then we'll be able to scale back on transportation as well so that we'll have some cost savings there um and then we'll still have our partnership with the ymca and they'll be moving back to red path so we're still providing those things as much as we can we're just kind of changing locations we can serve more students um and then mrs ward is here tonight with dory who's celebrating her first birthday so she's going to be here to celebrate with us yes so we have our celebration on friday it's on social media oh yeah okay it's on it's on social media but um the kids loved it we had cupcakes dory had she had her favorite vanilla wafers with some whipped cream on it and so the cupcake the kids made cards and they just had a blast so it was a lot of fun and next year i've already talked to area 30 we're going to partner with their culinary program and they're going to make cookies for the kids next year so but yeah things are going great the putnam county foundation they came they had a couple representatives there um and so they're going to be spotlighting her in their annual report um this summer so that'll be exciting too and they said that if anybody other schools are interested that they would be happy to support other programs in the future so we've had good success with dory yeah she's a good girl she is she girl yeah at home when the vest comes off she gets a little crazy a little puppy in her still but it's good that just makes her normal it does i just want to i just want to say that i love cupcakes and i'm always asking about dory so i'm a little disappointed i didn't get invited to the party hey i sent that invite out so next time next yes next time we'll make sure you get some sponge but yeah do you guys have any questions anything no okay perfect thank you yes thank you thanks for bringing her yes no problem that's all that's it okay next is the superintendent's report mr gibbon yeah so just a couple of brief things this month obviously construction is underway at the high school and is set to ramp up here after we complete graduation um we'll start to start to dig out and excavate in between mac and alley and the high school we've got our temporary entrance in in place and it'll be in place for some time so things are things are moving right along and definitely appreciate the staff and the students the community their patience and cooperation because it's challenging and frustrating as the fence moves and as location moves but it's all going to be worth it in the end and then we're getting ready to kick off we had a kickoff meeting uh getting ready to begin the secure entry work at redpath dear meadow and tz so those are secure entrances that construction will take place this summer along with sealing up the building envelope so finally tackling the humidity moisture issue and just the overall the way the building leaks um there so hopefully we'll realize some savings on our utility bills as well so those things are ongoing and then at the middle school finishing up our focus groups and design for the updated media center science labs and new secure office and entry there as well so we'll be putting those out to bid mid to late june awarding hopefully awarding a bid or not hopefully awarding a bid mid to end of july and then issuing issuing bonds and beginning that process as well so things are very busy but they are they are moving right along and i do think we are in a good position that we sold bonds when we did and we awarded construction contracts when we did because you know even though we're seeing inflation and maybe headed towards a recession i don't think things will ever quite come back down to where they were so we're ahead of the game with that and moving along and then we added to our state state championship academic teams we had two more state titles i don't remember what subject specific those were but we still leave the state in any class or excuse me based on enrollment like we are the tops in indiana so our students and staff members put a lot of hard work into that and uh tennis our girls tennis team are sectional champions and we'll compete at crawfordsville tomorrow night so that's really exciting and then we swept the county championships um we took all five um this spring and so that's another accomplishment so we're really achieving you know on on the athletic fields in the classrooms um and certainly you know in our fine arts as well we had um celebrations and accomplishments there this spring as well so it's just a great way to end the end the school year and just appreciate everyone who helps contribute to that and then obviously you know we'll be kicking off summer school and our stem camp at the middle school summer school at dear meadow the high school summer school program is going to be at the middle school this year so we can vacate the high school but those programs will kind of be upcoming and then one of my favorite times of the year is graduation on friday night and being able to celebrate the students and award them their diplomas so exciting time tomorrow obviously the last student day and then finishing off the following day with uh with the staff day so overall positive into the school year okay thank you next item on the agenda is old business we have no old business so the next item is new business and the first item oh do you want to present all these at once um we can i can just kind of give you a summary of what they are okay if that's helpful the first thing is an approval request for some resolutions yep so the resolution determined so resolution determining a need for a project so what we have to do it's it's required by statute and the board determines that there is a need for the project and the project is to finish off the remaining projects that were previously shared but due to escalating costs we needed to secure some additional financing and funds to complete projects that the public wanted us to wanted us to finish while still maintaining our debt service tax rate and not seeing an increase to the public on that resolution reapproving the building corporation so in order for the building corporation to not for profit corporation to issue the bonds the irs requires that schools approve the building corporation and authorize it to issue tax exempt bonds on behalf of the school district so that's very similar to what we approved once before and then along the same lines is the resolution proving form of an addendum of addendum lease and very similar this is something that's typical with lease financings used by school corporations in order to borrow for renovation and construction and the building is currently subject to a financing lease so what we're doing is we're supplementing that lease and that's the reason for the addendum and so the building corporation will use the bond proceeds to make the needed improvements to the building and therefore the lease rental will be sufficient to pay the principal and interest due to the bond holders and then the final resolution is approving first supplement to master continuing disclosure undertaking undertaking and issuing bonds and this just deals with the securities and exchange commission there's a requirement that the school corporation enters into uh first school corporation enter and first supplement to master continuing disclosure and taking forward issue bonds and we've previously entered and type this type of agreement and so we have to provide timely financial information to the sec's database and provide notice of events so these resolutions are all kind of standard we've passed them before earlier this year earlier this year and so this is just the next step in the legal process of what we have to do we had a building corporation meeting earlier today and went through that went through those steps as well so it'd be my recommendation that the board approve these resolutions as presented i make a motion we approve these resolutions as presented a second okay we have a motion to second to the questions hearing none all in favor all right all opposed motion passes next item is an approval request for an overnight basketball camp to st francis university yup so since it's an overnight trip it requires board approval and the boys basketball team is traveling so they have the proper chaperones and procedures in place and it'd be my recommendation to board approve this request one second okay with motion in a second um all in favor aye all opposed promotion passes next item is an approval request for the second reading of the 2022-2023 building handbooks yeah so again as is customary uh the end of the year the building principles have submitted um the buildings have submitted their updated handbooks for next school year and we've reviewed those and now it's time for the board to approve approve them so that we can send them off to print and have them back in time for next school year to okay they'll make a motion to approve a second okay a motion in a second any questions or discussion okay hearing no in favor aye all opposed motion passes next item is an approval request for the activity bus purchase yeah so earlier this year i don't remember i think it was in the winter we were notified that midwest would be unable to fulfill our school bus purchase activity bus that we had ordered or we had actually had board approved and ordered in the fall obviously we're not very pleased with that and we still have a need for a new activity passenger bus and so um kyle and i worked with curling bus sales and we've secured a some pricing for a activity passenger bus it is going to cost have the exact number here in front of me but it is a few thousand dollars more expensive than the bus that we had approved in the fall but it's still the low bid right now and we do have a need and we have one reserved because the remainder they had a few left over and they're selling out so we submitted a letter of intent and uh obviously we want to move forward with that purchase with board approval tonight it could be my recommendation that the board approved the the updated purchase so they actually have the bus that we can buy yeah they have the bus it's a different vendor it's a different company and to be honest it might be a company that we look to even do more business with moving forward rather than the other vendor nice and i think i misspoke earlier it wasn't midwest it was mcallister that's right they could not fulfill it i make a motion we accept second have a motion in a second all in favor aye all opposed motion passes next item on the agenda is an approval request for the franciscan health sports medicine contract and putnam county hospital sponsorship agreement yeah so earlier this spring we were approached by putnam county hospital with the desire to become basically our health care partner for all of our needs so currently we partner with putnam county for telehealth they've offered a free wellness they offered free wellness screenings for our staff so kind of working working with that and offering resources and things of that nature and then wanting to partner with us to provide athletic training services for student athletes and in doing so by bringing in the franciscan alliance they have an established up and running ethic training service program it's very similar to what we have um right now with hendricks regional um but we think that that both franciscan alliance and putnam county hospital are going to be better better partners um in the long term they're our local hospital um you know currently you know franciscan health provide athletic training services in martin places like martinsville mooresville butler they're going to be providing services to roncalli so it's a very similar type of program but we're actually going to be able to add to the services that we provide in athletic training so rather than having one athletic trainer we're actually going to have two because we can expand our offerings for for our middle school student athletes and also obviously help supplement in the high school so we're adding for that and then putnam county hospital is a part of the sponsorship agreement they're going to make a one-time donation to upgrade some of the equipment in our athletic training room and then they really came forward and with some sponsorship sponsorship agreement dollars to where this isn't going to increase our our cost of our current agreement with hendrix regional so we're getting more sponsorship dollars and we're going to have better coverage for our student athletes so mr mr greenlee mr welts mr rogers and mr rector and basically our team we think that it's best for the long term and we would like to recommend and move forwards with franciscan health and putnam county hospital and then notify hendricks regional of our intent to discontinue at the end of our current contract which is the end of june this agreement is through 2025 right it's a three-year agreement more athletic directors not athletic directors but athletic trainers we're doubling the size of our staff no more cost to us no less cost less cost and we're working locally so yeah sounds good yep okay i get emotional approved so moved okay the motion is second any further questions all in favor paul opposed motion facets next is an approval request for the 2022-2023 textbook rental and student fees yeah so again another customary thing at the end of the year is approved in our textbook rental student fees for the following year um those were submit reviewed and submitted um to central office and now is the time to for the board to approve proof of those items i will i would like to note that if anyone's looking at the device rental charge specifically for tz it'll be significantly less for the next three years um based on a federal grant that um what's up basically four years based on the a grant that corey um worked to secure and so we're able to help defray the cost of that device um to to obviously help or help our families um it is significant i think it went from like i think it's something like 15 a month or something like that i don't have it right in front of me so that's right um so that's a that's a good thing to be able to help our families but they've all been updated and they reflect our course offerings for next year and it's my recommendation that the board approved these fees and rental charges thank you corey yeah thanks corey if we could get you to work on the state to where they're just paid in full that okay can i get a motivation i'll make a motion second okay you have a motion in a second any questions comments hearing none all in favor all right motion passes next item is an approval request of 2022-2023 stepping stone incorporated school psychologist yep so uh mrs solomon isn't recommending that we continue to work with dr ayat for the 22-23 school year she currently works with our staff and we'd like to continue to maintain maintain services we do believe that she might be getting closer to retirement and so we also have plans to potentially look for some assistance to kind of help offset some of those hours because as she's working towards retirement she's wanting to work fewer fewer days but we want to obviously keep her here and she's a valuable employee and just fits in really nicely with our staff so i recommend that the board approve continuing to work with stepping stone inc sounds good to me i'll make a motion we continue working with him second okay we have a motion second in a second all in favor all right opposed motion passes uh next item on the agenda is an approval request for some for the 2023-2024 and 2024 25 payroll schedules yeah so nothing nothing's really changing it's just outlines of payroll cycles for the next two school years maintains our bi-weekly payroll schedule and so it's my recommendation that the board approved these payroll schedules as presented if you kind of backing back tracking a little bit is we want to make sure that we have the correct number of payrolls in a year in a budget year and obviously in a contract year because we actually had to adjust it two years ago my first year here because we had an extra payroll and we can't have 27 pays and a 26 pay calendar year so this helps to project out the long term and make sure that we have the adequate time to make an adjustment if need be so there's no surprises okay quick emotional proof he'll move i'll second give a motion and a second all in favor aye all opposed motion passes next item is an approval request for the 2022-23 employee handbooks for hourly classified salary classified and transportation yep so again another customary item is those handbooks have been updated and reviewed and it's time to approve those for the next school year i'll make a motion to approve second okay we have a motion in a second any questions discussion okay hearing none all in favor all right all opposed motion passes next comes the best part of the evening the second question did the approval request for some donations first of all being the jackets really dalton trust of green castle high school champions together in the amount of mica foss bar mitzvah project to green castle high school boys soccer in the amount of 3 500 the putnam county community foundation red path primary in the amount of 1 000 and depaul university student page price to dear meadow primary the amount of three thousand eighty dollars yeah i make a motion that we accept yeah gladly second okay we have a motion in a second all in favor all opposed motion passes thank you next item on the agenda is the gcse return to in-person instruction plan which is something that does not need board approval correct so as is customary um only requirements from the federal government to all schools as we're receiving esther dollars is we have to allow public comment on our return in person instruction plan every six months and so this just falls in the next six month window it's already you know it's already posted we're not we're not making any changes but we do have to allow the public the opportunity to make public comment on our plan so do we have any public comments on the return to in-person instruction plan okay thank you very much next item on the agenda is other business does anyone have any other business so what is the relationship we have happening with ivy tech are there some classes being offered that's kind of a question sorry yeah so any high school any their ivy tech is offering and i don't think it's necessary even just our local ivy tech they're offering free summer classes to high school seniors maybe even juniors um so that's been publicized and that's been pushed and then um we've had we met with mr rogers jenny and i met with ivy tech and they had expressed an interest in providing opportunities for our students to take some courses on their campus specifically with i think it was psychology and sociology how much we've been pushing all right i know that i've been a proponent of it for when i was in eminence and now when i was here like this campus is really struggling and they're missing out on a big opportunity to get our kids over get them some experience get them an opportunity to take an ivy tech course and you know they transfer out so be it but a lot of times some of our students stay locally and there's good opportunity there and so we have that opportunity worked out and we appreciate that but i also understand that maybe there's going to be another change in leadership as well right so hopefully they'll continue that commitment um to us and look to kind of build built upon in the future so that's kind of what i know right now okay anybody else have anything to discuss another business okay hearing hearing none last item on the agenda is adjournment can i get emotional okay well actually you could just come up backwards and ask a question because there's we don't have comments at the end of the board meeting but if you have something to say you can you can come up and address this afterwards so at the be so at the beginning that so if there were comments for agenda items that's what we that's what we asked for at the beginning all right that's fine no got you yeah okay all right so can i get emotional here a movie second okay with motion and second all in favor all posed motion passes thank you for coming be careful going home you

he provides tutoring at school based chess with students he has been spotted watching cars on saturdays for car washes pulling numerous seasonal plants and whatnot from nurseries in his car for for the upcoming seniors to get together at least once in person and build bonds as a class mr menendez is a wonderful example of a teacher who always goes the extra mile for his students and is well deserving of the title again thank you for your service to the students the gym work for the district goes to terence schnell unfortunately she could not be here but she received this award for going above and beyond with all the recruits and the new teachers that we're hiring answering questions on weekends um at night after hours trying to help us recruit the best teachers we can get to the district so our gym of the award for the district is mrs snell um we're going to take a five-minute break and ben begs here who are going to do a quick presentation on our new website and some of the work we've done so far this year so just give us five minutes thank you official communications today we're going to do a presentation on our updated website project and a few other items take it away guys yeah thanks for the introduction dan um yeah so we're both from laura bishop communications um you know we've met a lot of you over the school years we've been working with you but there's also some new faces for us so i'm jessica this is ben laura also really wanted to be here tonight but unfortunately he couldn't be here um but we'll go ahead and get started and give you an idea of what we've been working on since we joined the district in september okay so when we first came in in september we heard about all of these amazing things that were going on in the district i mean we saw it tonight right with students in the month month and hearing about gem of the month um and so much more but we we realized that maybe some of that wasn't being captured through storytelling it wasn't you know being put out into the into the news it wasn't being captured in kind of the way so we thought about at first like what is the brand for the district and that's where we came up with this idea of bound to astound um and we really felt like that kind of captured that atmosphere of pride and that you know um kind of that long overdue recognition and visibility for the district and so once we were able to establish that brand we've now used that to flow through all these other communication channels so we thought we could start here by showing the um video we worked with the district to make um this is about three four minute video but i think it does a really good job of capturing that bound to us down brand and showing off some of the highlights of the district so we can go ahead and watch that first fabric is a small community we want our kids to not only learn the curriculum but to learn life skills students become more independent they become better critical thinkers throughout their time at boundary very fun you have like a lot of freedom it's a new world in here so the bamboo school district is a pre-k to 12 district we're located in somerset county new jersey we're a neighborhood school district meaning that our kids walk to school we don't have business our buildings are broken up by grade level spans so it's not by where you live in the town despite what grade you're in the philosophy i think across every school building is just to be able to educate the whole child we look for opportunities to you know really best ourselves in the community so that the kids coming to school feel like it's connection to home our morning meetings start after the kids come in and have breakfast we always like to have a classroom that is kind and respectful so things aren't going well that's how we'll talk about in the morning meeting and sometimes we model it it gives an opportunity for the teachers to just sit with their kids and start the day off on a positive note but another large part of responsive classroom is establishing the rules i have the kids make the rules day one by them making the rules they're going to feel bad when they break it because they're like oh man rule number 30 was mine social emotional learning plays a very important part learning to control your emotions learning to help each other they speak to the class about like problems in the classroom let me know if anything's uncomfortable for you guys let me know if anything is good if anything is bad i appreciate the fact that the board of education saw the need for mental health services in this community it is a big undertaking to implement some of these programs but at the end of the day it's completely worth it because it's getting kids linked who would have otherwise been under the radar i know for a fact that brown brook students are capable of a great deal more so many of them are college-bound they have all of the skills necessary to be successful and lead a meaningful life i'm already seeing it now and then drama club gifted and talented or the stem ela i really i enjoy writing yeah so you environment to be around if you want to learn different things but i can prepare you i feel like the teachers helped me a lot by getting to the next level like time management stuff like that it helped me a lot our classrooms are all up to date with most current promethean boards in place we were very fortunate that we were able to put a one-to-one device in every student's hand from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade now we also have an engineering lab starting in our grades seven and eight but the texts that we read in english class serve as doors to interact with other cultures and see other viewpoints uh throughout the world and students are learning how to do that more naturally by themselves now brown bugs is like a whole different diversity get to meet a whole bunch of different type of people like i have a friend group we all are interested in like different things so whether it's building that homeschool connection whether it is making sure we have enough staff who are bilingual if i had to identify something that i'm most proud of it is just the community that's here and the sense that we build upon that within the school buildings i'm definitely going to miss brownberg high school but i'm very ready for like the next step of my life the lessons i learned about will be a part of my future [Applause] um so we're really happy with how the video turned out i think it's a really good reflection of the district and um this is going to be a really important part of the website of course but then also we have we'll be cutting this into shorter segments that we can use in a social media campaign as well so we'll get a lot of leverage uh the other big project we've been working on with the district is of course a website redesign um this is a complete redesign right of everything from the visual to rewriting every single page of the website at this point to make sure that we're having a website that is easy to navigate easy when you're going to it to find what you need making sure it's mobile friendly ada compatible all of these really important things and so i thought we could just go ahead oh and also making sure the district news and school news is prominent on the website so we can go ahead and i'll walk you through some of the aspects of the website so you're looking at right now the district site so we've completed two things right now the district site and the small and the smallie site um so the district site um as you can see we've tried to pull in that brand language of our students are bound to astound and really that language flows through every page of the website as you go down on the page um i'm sorry if you could go back up first we have our languages up at the corner there which is very important to have translation we also are prominently have the district's social media there at the top and as you go down the page then we thought about having the things that are updated most frequently so that would be your events and announcements at the top news is also something we definitely want to be very high up on the page any kind of district news there congratulating teacher specialist of the year anything like that throughout the year and then as you go on we have the website the mission statement who we are what we stand for if you want to click one of those you can see that each of those opens up with more information about the district and then and then i'm going down and all of this you know is is uh aba compliant so if you see over in the corner there this is an accessibility button that anybody could use to change the font size change the color um highlighting you know all of the types of things that you need to have in order to be compliant right with state regulations around this but then also it's just you know good to have this on any website and if you want to go ahead up here as we were thinking about the navigation we really wanted to kind of streamline this so thinking about what are the buckets that people would go to when they come to the website so here you might be a parent or student and very easily you would go there to find your portal to find your lunch venues which we know are very important um to find counseling services thinking about all the things you would need there um and then under district you know we've really kind of tried to make it very easy for people to find what they need when they come to the website same with you know a bucket for staff there athletics why don't you go ahead and click on the calendar uh you have your calendar here which you can see it in many different ways so you have your monthly weekly daily views that'll all be populated once the website's live with your different events that are going on and then you want to go over to news as well and then of course displaying um your news stories which are really important to telling the district's brand here um and as you probably saw on the on the front page there focusing we wanted to focus on making this appealing for somebody coming to the website so it's pictures of of kids it's you know happy kids in different activities going on in the schools um so i think that that really comes through on the site here and then if you want to go over to swally each of the schools will have um will follow a similar format um and so right now the three elementary schools share one page we have this broken out though that's smalling avaya vermont could all have their own as well as the middle school in high school um and so you can see that they would be able to put their own announcements they would be able to put their own upcoming events um a little bit they have their own news stories and then if you want to go to the top and you can go to our school each principal under principal's corner each principal communicates a little bit differently right some might have a video message every week some might have a newsletter so they're able to put that here and then if we want to go back to our school and you can see we are going to feature student of the month gem of the moon in those spaces and if you want to go do parents and students and then clubs activities at the bottom and for the schools that have clubs and activities they'd be able to showcase those here as well okay great and so uh last thursday we did a focus group um with i guess about a dozen members of the bamboo community parents and uh staff and overwhelmingly we heard positive about the website you know they liked uh the navigation what we had them do was uh give us the three three different ways that they use three reasons that they usually visit the website um they might have said you know they go there for lunch menus they go further there for the parent portal and so then we had them walk through on this new site how they would get to those locations um and overwhelmingly we heard that they can get to those easier they felt like it was more intuitive they want to be able to watch board meetings they felt like they were able to find the youtube link a little bit easier um so that was important feedback uh we did talk with them about a couple issues that came up around the calendar um integration of the calendar the um directory a staff directory we think that those are things that we can address in other ways um maybe not directly on the website here but maybe these are things that could be part of the parent portal or something that is not publicly facing on the website but something that um they can find in the parent portal so that's the website we do have more of a presentation here with some of the other work we've done but i want to just open it up in case there's any questions about the website before we move on one question so you mentioned um some of the concerns that they was raised about the calendar um would you mind sharing what they were sure so uh right now how we have it set up is that the calendar is um each school has their own calendar and then the district has their own calendar and we did it that way because the current calendar has everything in it and it was getting a little bit confusing i think to for to have everything all together so that's why we developed it in the way that we did um the feedback we heard was that if there's a parent who has students in two schools they would then sort of have to be bookmarking two different pages to go to or use you know using the calendars of two different pages or that so that was the key and we also talked about you know setting up our rss feeds for those calendars so you know obviously we'd have to do a little bit of training with parents at the beginning of the year but being able to download or set up a link between the particular school calendars and their personal calendar so if they wanted two particular schools they could set it up to have it on their own calendar versus us trying to jam everything into one calendar make it a little bit easier and a little less complicated exactly yeah i think that we would have to do that as a new project i don't want to sort of delay you know being able to launch the website because of the development that it would take to do the calendar integration but it's something we could revisit later there's many things like that um you know that we could always look back yes so when i look at the school pages versus the district page i've seen obviously the same logo the same colors do we feel that when when a person comes off of the district page into a sub school page that there should be something identifiable more than just the copy where it says welcome to smalling elementary do we think that maybe we need an icon and we need something that's a little stronger so that yeah like or score to lock the masthead in so when people scroll that welcome to smallie stays locked in because i feel like the vibe of and we have so many schools right like i wouldn't want parents to be scrolling through a site and be confused at what school they're at sure so if we lock the masthead in or put something either like i know bridgewater i've mentioned this before like bridgewater does it when they all the subschools have a sort of a different vibe or a different color i know as crusaders we probably don't want to do that yes but if we could come up with an identifying logo like a junior crusader or whatever identifies that individual school a little bit better sure i think that could help yeah i think that's a good point lisa what we ran into was that some of the schools do have their own logo yeah and others don't and so um or they don't have a high quality version of it or there were just various things and so that's why i think we went with sort of making it that you know everybody is using the same district logo the same colors which is good for sort of you know creating that unity amongst all of the schools in that way but i do think that maybe it's a matter of that welcome to smallie like making that like sticky at the top there so that you know where you are yeah and i think that could be especially important because then could you show it especially here i mean i love i love in that case it's taking you like what happened there we were on smallie but then it takes you back to the position because it doesn't look any different than this exactly so it is really like making that stick at the top i think even if that circular icon if there's a way of pulling like differentiated um lockups for each school even embedding the school name into the laptop so that the graphic is a little different i think that would help you know i just worry that parents have kids in multiple schools they're going to be on different school and not really identify the differences real easily sure so any other questions or feedback on the website okay just one suggestion something we're displaying for an audience um that's nice yes that's also a feature with the video we did um a spanish translation of the video that you could pull up subtitles for that as well i think the video is phenomenal like great job on the video i would love to see even more issues of that video like moving forward yes you know sure i think that this will be after after the website launches with the video on there then we can kind of do a social media campaign where you'll see clips of that video in various formats yeah really nice job um so we're at a point now where um we will continue to be building out the school pages and we'll be sharing um all the school pages with you um in the next month or so um and then i think we're going to go through training right with the people who need to learn how to use this new system um that'll probably be some of our principles um as well as others and so management strategy because clearly there's a lot of work that goes into mining and defining the good news that we want to you up so that um you know when something comes up that you want to put something on the website you know where this should go and you can consult with us about you know where is the best place for this um we want to do this you know in a way that keeps the navigation that we've built here you know keeps this so that people can find things easily in the future yeah yep so there's definitely some training that we can do around that okay so we'll keep going ahead and then i'll tell you about what we've done with the district's social media accounts yeah so we just brought it up it's it's really another opportunity to tie into that new brand um so the district when we joined and started working with everyone was already on facebook and twitter and we weren't posting super regularly and so we wanted to revitalize those accounts make sure that the post frequency was um you know on the rise and then in doing so we also started an instagram account as well just to reach a wider audience kind of cast that wider net so we just pulled a few metrics um for you guys to take a look at today but essentially the summary is that things are are going up um and we're seeing a lot of positive trends here so if you look at facebook the average engagement of your typical facebook post is around 122.
