so i don't if the program is three years old why we don't have any students graduating uh next year i mean unless i'm listening to something else i'm not sure you please qualify and get me to so the freshman class last year had two students take it so year 2024 they would have been in the class of 2024 if we had run the program with two students the year before that there was one student for so you'd have one student that would be a senior next year in the program we weren't going to hire an instructor for one student so we moved them into engineering so that one student that was in robotics is now in engineering and the two students that were in robot that took robotics last year which would be a 2024 students are in engineering and they're still in engineering today so that's why we're not going to have any graduates until 2025 coming up graduating out of robotics which we hope will be 10 students graduating out of robotics any student that goes into robotics if we took five sophomores next year and we had 10 students in robotics and 5 new students and they go through the program they're going to have great opportunities for great jobs or going on that we also prepare them for post-secondary particularly in a program like robotics because it's strong in mathematics and science and so those students will be well prepared to go on and succeed either in college or in a job opportunity because what we're really trying to do is train students to be robotic automation technicians not engineers but technicians that can do in some engineering but what they do is they learn how to fix robots cnc equipment do retrofittings for robots in working with cnc machines everything from the medical field to the transportation it's numerous amount of industries that robotics are embedded in today so the job up it's it's you know unbelievable the amount of opportunity even in the aviation industry robotics is a big piece of that industry as well so that's why we think it's so important to try to get this program off the ground and make it work anything further okay moving on in your packet uh we had the june calendar any any questions concerning that document okay um john uh job posting the uh the vote on the superintendent will ask the district committee to approve only new job postings positions and job postings for the year 22-23 john are you talking about agenda item by oh okay sorry jill accept the motion to a table uh you have second discussion why we tabled in it john because i wanted to present some uh information from other schools and districts that i haven't had your microphone john please i'm sorry because i'm trying to collect some data from other schools on the rationale for uh uh this request in which i haven't had time to get this week uh since our last meeting so i'll have that i should have that all put together by the next meeting it should be actually true um should have had that today and you should be able to articulate why the reason for for your decision to what you have put on the agenda today so i don't see the mean the need to table well first of all i think the motion the recommended motion i believe is important in terms of moving our meetings forward in and using an approach that typically used by 90 of the districts out there um i believe it will cause um uh less conflict make it easier for us to move job post things along at a more reasonable rate when we have challenges often we have uh we may get a opening that i may have to wait to get approved from the committee where if this were passed i wouldn't have to wait for that it would be in a more timely fashion so my need to do some research with other schools to see the rationale and also how many schools out there what percentage and why what they have found to be the approach that works best in terms of job postings and delivering them having them presented to the school committee francis thank you leo and that's great but that what works for one school one school district might not work here um so that alone to me is not rational to table um this this issue because you took the time to put it on here and you talk about conflict in in conflict and the rationale to get something posted um right away i don't think you've ever had that issue i mean you contact leo you contacted me to get something in so honest i took i truly don't see the need to have the item put on the table i'm also uh do leo have a motion in a second on that doom not to take no wasn't it to table right right but i'm just right the same we did who made the motion well okay anything further on it all those in favor anyone opposed did you call the roll uh please miss fitzgerald miss dizza mr hayden mr cirillo miss marmal yes mr rossi mr lamontagne yes okay out of state travel mr charles kennedy and mr tim lane electrical instructors and electrical students to travel to paquette and howard electric in plaistow new hampshire to have students experience working in a complete electrical shop on june 9th 2022 there is no cost to the district a motion on that please second discussion they're graduates aren't they john yes yeah well they're graduates i meant the paquette contractors yeah the contractors are graduates here yeah all those in favor anyone anyone opposed okay added to the agenda this bid the superintendent will update the district committee on a bid for metal fab for metal and auto body shop welding hoods project so the reason it's in the last minute in the agenda last minute is we just got the bid openings and we're trying to get this out on the street as soon as possible so we can get this work done this summer in the middle fab shop so basically what we're doing is we're upgrading the metal fabrication shops ventilation system so that we can get the fumes from the welding out all the boots uh more efficiently out of the shop and get the the air quality safer and better in the shops and so we had a bit opening and um and the low bidder uh we're looking to award the bid to the low bidder for 670 uh dollars this was put out in rfp [Music] and blw the engineers designed and developed and put the rfp out there and recommends that we go forward with the contractor that was a little bit and that's your recommendation that would be my recommendation we need a vote on that you have a motion on that please still move to have a second excuse me no it was seconded i didn't hear it no all right um mr cyrillo i i i see the bid the lowest bid but i don't see it i can't compare it to what with the other bids do we only get one bid how many bits do we get on this um i believe we got three bids on this this was by far the low bid so the committee should have gotten all three bids but we could see what which one was actually the lowest this is a little bit i see i hear that from you but i can't compare that to the other bids so are you saying the other bids are higher i can't say that because i haven't seen them they when you bring in you think i'm going to bring you a bid that's not the low bid and tell you it's a low bid once again when you bring in a bid to the committee it should show all the other bids as well and i'm going to take you on your word that this is the lowest bid but i can't say that it is the lowest bid or is the highest bid and i can't compare it to anything else so when bids are to actually come in they should be what the bids were then explain this this is the lowest bid and this is why we're going with this one anything further yes sir i mean i'm sorry zoella pardon me pardon me um just to go on um on um mr cerello's question i mean comment we do want to compare to the other bits and have it documented because this is not the first the second or maybe the third time that we have asked to get all the information for all the bidders so that we have them and we can compare and we can say yes we're not you know without asking all these questions we have asked this many other times ah thank you mr sorello who you're right yeah but this joint is all set yeah okay i removed my um second for discussions for final vote okay anything further as far as discussions on this matter okay all those in favor all those opposed oh once i didn't see you i'm okay i'm sorry zoila yeah yeah go ahead i'm only convinced my question is is it normal practice for when we put out bids that it comes back to the committee showing presenting all bids not in the past no oh well oh i'm not saying that you haven't been i'm talking about glts yeah yeah that's that's all i can that's all i like is i can bring you two other bids one would be 800 000 one might be 900 000 i don't know what you want to compare 800 900 five not much to compare six seven eight a little bit but i can do that but that's fine so so but it's a matter of time and putting stuff together so we put this together real quick i just got this uh given to me yes late yesterday so i threw it in here but you had people in the office were not in the office that helped work on this so i couldn't get the other bids from that person but i wanted to get it approved because it's timely and important if i don't get it in quickly we're not going to be able to do the job this summer so if you turn this down tonight we probably won't be able to do it this summer and it's an important job because we try to do it we want to do the thing is you got the three bit the four three bids you have the amount you have the name of the company and you have the amount that it bid there's not that much difficult nobody said that i mean we still haven't voted on it so you don't know if we voted we voted in and out but we voted it down yeah anything further i'm gonna ask you on this but oh i'm sorry mr hayden maybe the business manager can give us some clarity on procedure maybe not for this one because you weren't here but for the future please yep and awesome so typically when there's a bid opening like this there is a listing of all the bids that came in as you said i've never seen that been brought to a school committee meeting but it would be an easy enough process for me to include it in the packet if that's what you would desire anything further okay i'm going to ask you to call the roll on this particular vote um and the motion was to approve please the motion was made you you second you seconded i believe yeah he changed his uh promotion i'm sorry okay mr rossi miss fitzgerald miss dizza no mr hayden yes mr cirillo miss marmal i'm sorry no mr lamontagne yes the motion carries three two okay uh in the future john if we can uh put the uh list of bits straight on if we can't possible okay i should ah it's melissa because she's gonna be the one listing the bids as far as that's concerned and i don't think there's a i don't think there's a legal precedence as far as that's concerned whatsoever listen the company name in the bid i don't think there is i'm sorry right but no but i mean as far as presenting it to us you know what i'm saying because the the opening of the bids is public whether people show up or not is a different thing but they are sometimes other bidders can show up at the empty openings and stuff okay all right so we'll uh try to make a practice of that uh in the future uh report from committees uh all business district committee priorities uh this isn't a priority but i'd like to put on the agenda next time um i'll vote for our summer schedule john i'll vote for our summer schedule if we're going to do the summer schedule or not okay for the committee itself yeah yeah yeah okay just on the next agenda please any other priorities yes right okay uh policies this will require a vote uh section b b b b a school committee member qualifications and section b b b b b sounds like a stutter school committee uh oath of uh office a little motion on those discussion all those in favor all right anyone opposed okay new business anything uh no table matters to come off the table you're off the floor i mean i don't think we don't you're all set john you said that there was um oh no i'm sorry personnel consider considerations no resignations no leave of absence uh no retirements appointments a mr tyler peters a plumbing instructor effective august 30th 2022 ms colleen reynolds a math instructor effective august 30th 2022 ms deborah reyes school adjustment counselor august 30th and mr ramon cruz guidance counselor august 30th 2022 the following are job postings superintendent he's require a vote john looking for a full-time uh night uh custodian this is a replacement position okay we're gonna do one at a time there's only three this time i have a motion on that please i'm sorry yes so move the second discussion did the person retire from this one i can't remember is returning yes someone retired yes there's a gentleman retiring at the end of the school year anything further all those in favor all right anyone anyone opposed parent liaison parent liaison truant officer per para contract this is a new position to use this particular position to support some of the outside um security as well as doing home visits which we don't have one right now so we're looking for someone that can do more home we can do more home visits we do some now but we need to do more and also we want to upgrade the work of the security person at the gate so we need someone that can cover that that's that's the rationale for this particular position i have a motion on that please uh some move have a second second discussion right so this is a going to be a brand new position we've never had a truancy officer through glts before not someone that's designated as uh that is part of their jobs in their job description right now the um uh disciplined um director of discipline the dis discipline office uh typically the dean of discipline has done some visits but it's becoming more and more difficult for them to get out they will still do some depending on the case that's going on the situation going on but in order to be able to go out more often than we do at this time i believe that there was a request and looking at the amount of uh visits we do and the need to do more visits um is the ration or the reason and also this particular the person that's going to be part of doing this will also be doing working out of the guard shack as well uh be working with the person that's there now or no they will be covering the guard check when not doing so we're gonna utilize our own personnel to uh we're looking to utilize our own personnel at the guard shack we feel like that we need to have better control and in order and more knowledge about what's going on in the school so when people come to that to guard shack and talk where they're going that the person in the guard track has a better understanding of what's going on in the school anything further all those in favor anyone opposed uh summer school nurse john summer school nurse to provide full nursing coverage during summer school per teacher contract july 11th to the 4th 7 30 to 10 12 p.m this is the annual position a motion please it's almost have a second thank you uh discussion this is a is this a new it's not a new position uh no this is a replacement we do we hire someone every summer anything further all those in favor anyone opposed future agenda items okay there's no need for an executive session john no okay this time the chill accept a motion to adjourn all those in favor anyone opposed thank you very much and uh what's the date of the next next meeting please you have it good thank you night after school not after school closes after graduation [Music]

so twelve thousand three hundred and counting so what at one twenty eight we were twelve six on one twenty eight but that's not the state reported number nor had we budgeted for that we budgeted for eleven 11 843 those that was our october first state submission so if you look publicly at our data that's the number you will see since that number was submitted on october 1st at the beginning of this school year we have grown by over 500 kids thank you sir thank you so may i ask another question what are we budgeting at for for this year as far as the number what is the new number that we're going to be looking to get funding on obviously this year you said it was 11.84 so is it going to be this 12003 or we anticipating or are we even allowed to do that anticipate an additional 400 enrollment or is it just based on the number we have right so at the end of the school year our budget always include it's not just projections with contractual obligations but also projections that we typically experience on throughout the year um so we're you know we find ourselves always playing catch up anyway um i right now i'll be happy to just get budgeted for the numbers we have currently um but if michelle i feel pretty confident if we got the numbers from the city for the projections for the high school and middle school growth that would position us well for 22-23 um i'm talking about the project the budget in terms of what we budgeted for our budget accounted for where we were now and leaving space for that typical growth that we always experienced nice teresa so you're uh basically basing it on the 12 300 uh school population then yes right because during the budget season we were already over 12 000 you know it was january we were at 12 000 in january um and we will always i shouldn't say always you know hopefully one day we will not continue to grow um at this at the same rate uh but when we budget it's addressing our needs now with a little bit of space that we just always experience in the spring in the summer thank you did you say increase or decrease for the spring and summer we always get increases in the spring this summer increase and the fall in the winter it's like a couple of different cycles we get to we experience every year anyone else john anything additional sir no thank you eddie oh thank you all right one more if you don't mind sorry um somebody had mentioned that there was an additional expense for second language learning do we have an idea per student what that amount is is an additional expense for english language learners so wow i'm not sure the question michelle when you say per student what do you ask them yeah so there was a uh i believe john had mentioned something about additional funds that were needed for the second language learners is that only in staff or is that per student that it's calculated how does that number how do you get that number if i may um in our budget book uh one of the three or four improvements was to add staff for english language learners i forget the number we were requesting but it was uh just the staff um nothing else other than that okay thank you and and michelle not not exactly the same way as students who have an iep uh but but students do have the quali the students do have to take an assessment and if they meet certain requirements um they then become eligible for services if the families accept those services we have to provide english language learner support for those families um the enrollment increases that we are experiencing are a lot of students who require these services and so i believe we had six or seven positions esl teachers or by and all bilingual teachers because a lot of our students that came in this year were middle school middle school and high school students this year and so that's why in a budget driver worksheet i'm sorry in the budget worksheet it was positioned at that level to support that growth okay great thank you appreciate that welcome anyone else mr walston because there's no audition do you have a summary swirl thank you mr russo thank you so much so i'll i will just end on um i i think the best summer i could provide is is that um the team and i you know we've struggled over this for um a number of hours um and feel like it's best to use and continue to use the relief monies to provide these critical student support services that we have in place post pandemic we understand fully that these positions these monies uh will not be here long um and as a district we will have to make some tough decisions uh moving forward um at the same time we are continuing to experience enrollment growth during the pandemic we hired additional staff for the purpose of social distancing some of those positions were able to save the board monies and i i think we had quoted um quote um a little over a half million dollars but a lot of the other positions that we hired office for the purpose of social distancing and seo support because of enrollment growth we are not able to uh through attrition uh remove those positions at this time and so um the cliff that we talked about going into the 21 22 school year uh we are approaching that cliff i i think we all have a responsibility while we're in possession of these federal monies to continue to provide services for kids but unlike other districts in the state of connecticut we continue to experience enrollment and we're going to need monies to close that gap i i apologize to interrupt um i just got a text from louisa whose connection is not so great but she was asking how is how is this budget going to affect uh the development of the career academy um it will just exacerbate our um our challenges and so i i mean obviously we are far apart right now with city in terms of the monies that we need from local monies that we need and there will be greater needs once we open up the academy certainly some positions some teachers will be able to slide over to the academy but we will need school leaders there we will need secretaries we will need custodians we need food services we need all of the contractual services that you need to open up for school and then we will need positions at that school as well not to mention and i think we all forget we have a middle school that's also opening there there are no positions to pull from rogers park or broadview we will actually have to staff a school of 350 those will all be brand new positions um in the meantime we will continue to experience enrollment growth uh we will continue to have to pay our salaries and wages and meet those contractual obligations um and so that's my long way of saying it's just going to exacerbate the challenges that we've been talking about okay thank you so much mr wilson absolutely one final comment mr wilson if i may yes question the city is aware of our needs for the cred the academy correct um they are learning they are learning yes in our in our um breakout meetings you know we've started those discussions and and when i say discussions it's more of a dialogue like this versus presentation and you know then the meeting ends um so there's more opportunity for a dialogue and i believe we are meeting again in june um i think we're suspending the meetings over the summer but we will be picking back up again um in the fall thank you very much sir thank you so because i can't see you i can't recognize you do you have anything further michelle no teresa i'm good thank you i'm wondering um you know the term you know built that they will come if we get a new school will we be inundated more with students i mean if if we do the good job we are anticipating um i would move here [Laughter] right right and and our assistant superintendent just said and home values will go up even more [Music] anyone else louis psych if you're here please comment if you wish anyone else all right i i'd like to hear a motion to close the meeting motion to adjourn thank you a second maiden second thank you all thank you all for your participation

so soliciting and fundraising you see our our policy in front of you and our policy is pretty bare bones yeah why why are we talking about this one it seems i mean what we have seems okay to me are we looking to align it with caves well i'll pull up caves for you i mean i i read through him it doesn't really seem it seems like ours is fine to me has there been a problem the only thing i i like is specifically indicating that when you're doing fundraising for school sponsored events you need to fill out the form outlined in the policy we do have a form and it's good um it's a good form it outlines what the activity is where the money goes etc uh who's facilitating it needs to be signed off by people to take some ownership i know that this is something that we're going to review uh with clifton clifton larson um [Music] so you know i think what we'll do is uh we could either postpone this or we could include this statement on the forum is part of the policy that we already have or we can like i said postpone it and see if if vin has a version that they want us to use um i would say postpone it okay but i i think the uh the idea of adding the the form language in there is good since we since it's already practice anyway um at least that would be a good start but um maybe just make a note because i guess it'll depend on what the uh the audit found if there's anything additional that would need to be so added there right yeah so at the end when we go through the items that we're going to move forward to a first reading um we'll simply just not mention that right okay so the uh last item for the i think sam was trying to ask a question no i just wanted to image um so i would say i just wanted to make sure that this item also because we didn't review the other two and it has to do with finance in general um hopefully there's no not overlap but there's nothing that would dictate another does that make sense um especially not having gone through the other yeah you just want to make sure that all three policies work in concert and not against each other right right right yeah so we will certainly i'll certainly review that with vin um in advance i know he already sent uh a policy out to our administrators to take a look at so we'll continue that internal excuse me internal review process to make sure that they are in concert the next item was the gifted and talented students this is a brand new policy okay basically what this is saying is that where is the school system required to identify students for gifted and talented services so we already have a process whereby every year we review all of the data with the team and identify students for gifted and talented we send out letters to that effect um and it's you know this is this everything that we do we've been you know basically following this policy anyway okay since this mix this is mandated policy per statute so did they did they just what two week uh statute or did they was this entirely new statute that just seems that just happens to be in line with our practice um i believe that they created new statute on this yeah i think the change here they had a policy the old policy did not include talented in it so the new statute includes talented now and that the districts i believe are responsible in trying to find multiple ways of measuring the both academic and talented which typically is like in the arts and so on i do know that i do write yeah i do like this dr solon there was one wording i would suggest changing um i actually like this a lot i almost want to ask if i can kind of hijack this because i'm rewriting our own ours i figured maybe we can change it to will as opposed to must let me just try to find it because at least it'll give us some more flexibility [Music] sorry my computer is running slow [Music] and it's buffering buffering buffering uh what what paragraph is it on the uh there's a must writing right in the middle of jeff's sheet right now there's yeah there's a must and i think the final determination and the identification of students as gifted third paragraph down was it that one so yeah the identification process must include i would suggest change it will include that might be a statutory requirement you think so because it must include multiple measures in order to identify students strengths in intellectual ability creativity or a specific academic area because that the must in that sentence allows it requires us like you had said earlier to not just look at intellectual ability but creativity as well adding the arts component to that i'll ask on that i you know what uh cabe has a policy guru who i can ask on that yeah if you change the wording that that changed the right the intent yeah my thought is it just gives us a little more flexibility on those multiple measures that's all as opposed to must to me restricts us to and maybe i'm reading it differently that's all um it kind of restricts us in a way that these are the areas of measurement but then again you did outline it below so yeah i'm just trying to think of what the difference would be between yeah yeah must says this so if you change it to will that means you could add more than this right if you change it to will because will doesn't will say that you're still using multiple measures was it will that you wanted or may i i would like to see will like this is something we will do and it gives us or at least your administration some more flexibility if if um measurements change down the road um to interchange those you know whatever it is that you're going to use that's all i i don't see any difference between will and must in terms of um you know on our end i don't think it would be an issue to change it to will if you prefer that language yeah may would be a uh yeah may would is more relaxed yeah will or must i think you know carry it so i'll i made a note for that and i will ask um the folks at cabe for their interpretation on that but i think it should be okay and then is there any way that again the statue says we have to identify but not necessarily service we don't necessarily have to service so maybe some language that says the district will make every possible effort to provide because i don't know how confident you are dr solon in that you know we had the talent the gifted program but is that going to always be the case is what i'm trying to anticipate you know um i think uh on the surface that shift to maybe ensure that we continue to have a teacher serving the population now keep in mind that's only elementary school now when you make a change like that you know does this encompass all kids k through 12 that we're going to make every possible and what's the now you're looking at a dramatic increase in a financial commitment there um right you know i i that might might be better served if there's a challenge to continuing with talon gifted to look at that but i'd be nervous about creating a real fiscal demand there right now unless that's where people want to take it so all right um going back to the policy that concludes all of our uh first reviews and i'm going to try and make this a little more straightforward by highlighting the the items that we indeed reviewed and are ready to move forward and then we have this so even though we still have some questions there we can still adjust them going into the second reading uh right right so okay and then we would move in our agenda to personnel non-discrimination i'll share this at this point this is the third reading we should all be pretty familiar with this but this is um this is our policy that says we can't discriminate based on age the pcc highlighted in gray is the new part we've been complying with this because it's part of federal law and state law anyway but we don't have it reflected in our policy this is a required change in policy okay any questions on that one no questions is this on i thought we did a third read on this already on the non-discrimination i don't think so but we may have let me i hope not let me look at we moved one no that was what that was last that this passed me the meeting before that we moved a policy to a third reading um we had at the last meeting review for a second reading this was on april 20th 2022 review for a second reading personnel non-discrimination so this meeting would be reviewed remove moving it to a third reading right let me yeah let me let me look at the board policy or the uh board meeting here quickly from the last i think the last one we moved to the third reading was the one dealing with um resumes i think which wasn't necessarily age i recall because i think um ann and faith had comments which impacts our hiring practices right hiring practices right yeah so i think that was the last one that we did okay first and third rating so at the may 19th meeting we didn't have any policy to report right let me look here on the meeting prior that might be it adam because i was not at the may 19th and i thought that that was our third read right then in there ah well honestly i thought we were missing something because i had actually emailed carol during the middle of the meeting i was like i think we're missing missing minutes for our policy meeting she's like no we didn't have a meeting like oh my bad yeah and the meeting prior to that was the um high school showcase the meeting prior to that was april 21st which was a day after the last meeting um yeah so we only had a second reading on that thank you that was a little off in the calendar no no worries so okay um that concludes the policies that we were you know bringing under consideration this evening and moving forward there are um two other points of interest for conversation would you guys prefer to make a motion on the existing policies that we reviewed tonight before we get there or do you want to review these two items and then make the motion at the end i think we can make the movements now i mean yeah all right so why don't i present screen so whoever wants to make the first motion can see the mo the um ones that we're moving forward for our first reading the highlighted ones are the ones that we're moving forward okay um all right so i'll make the motion here move the policy committee [Music] moved to a first reading policy number 1140 distribution of materials to and by students policy 6141.51 advanced courses or programs 6141.52 challenging curriculum program and 6172.1 gifted and talented students is there a second 10 seconds any discussion all in favor unanimous fantastic and then the second is move that policy number 4118.11 personnel nondiscrimination be moved to a third and final reading how many is there a second sam second um any discussion all in favor sam sarah there we go it is unanimous perfect um and now we can move on to section four so there were um two elements in there i know tim will be pleasantly surprised that the new law removes the sunset date for conducting remote and hybrid meetings uh i think we all appreciate that as we're here this evening again i mean committee meetings are the work of the board of education done in public not necessarily a public meeting but we want to be incredibly transparent and accessible we think that in this format it allows for both and for us to accomplish our work efficiently effectively and transparently uh the cave has not yet put forth the policy guidance on uh you know adopting this as part of policy but we are following and compliant with the law that will be coming soon the policy will be coming soon any questions on that because i know we want to take a look at that and codifying it into policy in the near future um i guess uh for me the only question i had was the the part at the end where it's saying um for public comment that if someone wanted to comment that they would have to request in writing to have a i guess a terminal set up so that they could comment during our virtual meeting and i was wondering if if there's been clarification on that or not or if if that could be done through a supplied public link or something so i guess that's that weird thing right i mean yeah so if we get a written request that i don't want to participate virtually this school system must set up a time and place for them to per you know participate um virtually real time so right you know in other words you know i don't i don't like this um i don't want to log on this option i don't want to send questions and this is generally more so for um you know usually i mean we have public comment meetings in in um policy in the committee most many boards do not i would save the most so usually in a full board meeting let's say the full board was virtual and you had a public comment section like somebody could technically go to town hall and you know mike salamini could stream them into this virtual space to let them speak for three minutes i really don't anticipate that being a we don't get people oftentimes to comment um virtually via email let alone come in person to a policy committee meeting or something like that obviously if it's a if it's a big deal issue adam i've heard you say to me before like if we're anticipating a lot of public comment we would do it in person yeah you know absolutely so that's but we will certainly get clarification when the new policy comes out and is available okay uh tim go ahead yeah so just generally i think my hope is that you or mike whoever is doing it just can work on um making it more accessible like you were just saying or what we're experiencing tonight right um just whatever the stuff is just to try to make it as accessible as possible i mean i've explained all my thoughts on virtual meetings but you know i think i think we should make a good faith effort and i'm not creating any sort of timeline on this i know mike's got a million things to do um but it going in that direction i think it would be valuable i agree um sam go ahead i mean [Music] couldn't we just provide them similar to how you had town hall meetings virtually uh provide them the same link that we're on and they just hop into the space i mean granted if they didn't have the means the technical means we'd give them access to it but i think by now majority of the public has either a phone or a computer which they can sign on to this particular link if need be to make comment yeah they you know the only issue i've heard around that is people hijacking that and you know disrupting meetings not even members of our own community just somebody who's got too much time on their hands wanting to say profanity or something in a public meeting because that's what gets them excited in life i don't know but um zumba is coming in i don't know what possibility in chapter yeah i mean i like to think our people are better than that but you know we can look at options to get them to participate virtually and when we have clear guidance about what the expectations are it's a real good summer project that we will be working on the last item i just want to update you in the curriculum committee there was discussion about how do school systems navigate curricular questions concerns complaints so they've done work to walk through other policies from other districts and they've forwarded to us another policy to consider so in advance of the next meeting we'll get you a copy of said policy marlene is finalizing that with kevin um and i'll take a look at that and then we'll send it off to you to review for our next meeting but i just wanted to make you aware of when you see that show up on your agenda like what is this where did this come from just forwarded on from the curriculum committee so that's the policy that that faith and and we're referring to right okay yep yeah right so next um meeting we're going to start a little differently at 7 00 p.m um to accommodate the auditor uh who can make it it virtually at 7 30 and so um i'm sure we'll be advancing the four policies we advanced tonight in that first half hour plus taking a a look at that meeting the policy from curriculum then the remainder of the meeting will focus on the audit if that's okay adam does that make sense yes sam question i just want just a little clarification because we have two links there's a 630 link and a 7 o'clock link yeah the the 6 30 will be um removed okay [Music] then just sent out the seven o'clock link today yeah i see venin's unfortunately as the organizer carol can only send that out what are you gonna do with water it's only one day and i'm already the wheels have fallen off the wagons she'll enjoy hearing that and when she puts the minutes together upon her return anyway all right okay go ahead on the agenda great so uh is there any other items or business to come before this policy meeting seeing none uh motion to adjourn all right first and uh sam second all in favor all right it is unanimous this meeting is adjourned at the 805. thanks so much appreciate your patience all right have a good night have a good night thank you

postnatal accommodations for students is there a way that the board can see what that accommodation is going to look like or do we know i know it's a personal matter but i just would like to see what you know i've worked in a corporate environment where those kind of accommodations have been a closet it's not a problem yeah i just want to make sure that it's because i know there are stipulations in that policy that kind of itemize all the things that need to happen so we have a separate um off like a room inside the nurse's office in high school um that you you in perhaps if we had a student doing that that's the room we try to utilize but sometimes unfortunately that room is taken for other issues okay and then you use a conference room or something so we're thinking that it could be a flexible space like it's not an actual like we don't have a space we don't have okay i just want to make sure that that's kind of set up and you know and i have a question regarding the first so from the first policy there regarding the safety plan so i was reading what it said but it's a little bit confusing so something about it not no longer being effective to [Music] because it looked like it was specifically for um healthcare right workers but i guess it was adopted in some way again these policies are especially that one in particular is changing because it started with the um the road back plan um with covet and everything else and it kind of has morphed a couple times now into like a more general safety safety plan i i can't remember exactly all the wording that was in there um when i read it on the top of my head but i know it's just another reiteration of that um next move in that plan from the state just to give you an example like there was one one iteration where you know we had to have a coded cp uh specialist you know you had a specialist and then then you had a coordinator and you know it's a little little word any other comments or questions but so these two policies are not related to where the level is at right now right that's so cool yeah it's a whole different thing that was it all right can we have a roll call please mr bale yes mr fazio yes mr zeno yes mr januzzi yes it's lima yes mr minhaus yes monson yes and mr dawson yeshua all right we are up to 11.1 results the boundary board of education approves the climate uh the resolutions as outlined in financial resolutions this is 11.2 through 11.8 out of motion thank you mrs defazio a second second thank you mr bell um for discussion you know obviously anybody who has questions or comments but i want to point out uh that 11.6 is a little bit different than what we had uh talked about in the past and dr gallagher maybe you just want to give a brief look yes um so we rebidded the hvac project um the initial bid came in at um just north of seven million dollars when we did it at the time so what we did was we broke it down into many different little segments figuring you know we only had so much money of the two or so three money so we wanted to do something we didn't want to lose the money we wanted to do something so you broke it down into uh specific buildings and control systems and things like that well lucky for us you know when the bids came in the the total amount of doing all the work was a 5.6 million um we have uh i think we're i think we're looking at probably using about 300 300 000 or so out of this year's savings to actually do the entire project so the good news is we're doing the entire project so uh yeah obviously you know athc systems are a long lead item um so some of this some of this stuff is going to impact us um as we move along through um through school uh you know depending on we're gonna try and do most of the work if we can you know during the summer months and things like that but unfortunately sometimes uh you know uh because of the lead item on this you may get uh you know five or six ptac units that come in in october we're gonna have to put them in and i'll do that either second shift or weekend any questions on that item it's a pretty big one okay uh the only other thing i'll say is uh i think it's excellent to see the uh bake sale that's going to happen at the community middle school party led by the students which is always fantastic to see and then the donations that are coming in to help with the outdoor classroom i think will be very very nice or appreciated any other comments on the financial resolutions i have one question on 11.5 for the custodial services i know we have been having an issue with trying to get some of the services in could you just explain out a little bit more on 11.5 and where we stand as far as who we're going to have staff for the next score is it going to be the same service oh i i can't speak to that right now what we've done is um we rejected the rfps that came in yeah and we actually are going to a bid process so it's a little different okay um we're going to probably you're going to award that at the next board meetings you'll know who your personas will be for july 1.

2022-05-24 Somerset County, NJ YouTube / Board Meeting transcript source: youtube Board Meeting 5-23-22 · passage 7
okay again but we i know that there's at least four companies that are going to fit on us so you know right now we're just we know there's going to be an increase to it yeah and we know it's going to be a substantial increase to it um just because it seems as though again just a little about that yeah but you know they've all been unionized so you know there's a lot more you know um contracts a lot of obligations that we're going to have to fulfill um or they're going to have to fulfill which the costs get passed on us obviously so um right now we're bracing for about a 500 500 000 increase over what we've already budgeted for the 22-23 school year okay and we still feel that outsourcing that is probably more beneficial than having a custodial staff on site i would never ever kind of say what you just said if i could own my own custodial staff i would absolutely do that yeah but unfortunately to bring them back into process even more than that number i just gave you and i just don't think we can physically uh financially handle that um i did have a conversation with the association prior to going up with the rfp about that okay um and again there's just some hurdles we can't get over at this time okay so we're most likely looking at a third party you definitely have a third party okay okay any other questions comments hearing none can we have a world call please mr bail yes mr fazio yes miss casino yes mr januzzi yes miss lima uh we have no other matters to come before the board we are up to new business if there's anything that anybody would like to raise or discuss at this time do i have a question of course any updates on transmission rates from daily um i've been sending you those obviously we are in we are in the orange right now however in district our rates are pretty normal um i think perhaps we might have had only nine um so you know again um i will tell you that walking around in a couple of buildings you see more kids wearing masks um of their own choosing obviously um but i thought that was good to see that the kids are taking this seriously and wearing masks again and things like that so um right now i'm not sure there's anything we need to do um just because we are still relatively low considering generally any guidance heard anything spoke about anything i think i think at this point in time just reading the team leads a little bit um they want us over so you know i would think that we would probably be looking at what we did kind of this year in terms of that that things really got bad again but other than that i don't see much so on your policy like does it indicate um if you're at a certain level you know i mean i'm going with the master being optional like does it indicate that if we are at a certain level like the state is a certain level the county's at a certain level like do the mask get free for for us as the board decision so it wasn't part of life okay so at this time with the board consider like being that it's on on high and orange to have i mean it's great to hear that there are you know students taking it upon themselves to to put on a mask but i'm just saying as in you know support would you have considered being that you are an orange um that the county isn't more you know i mean it's great also we haven't had cases here the district physician and taking guidance from there we we don't really make our own decisions on this because unfortunately for us no one up here has a medical degree so we listen to those who do and if he says it's time then we'll revisit it at that time but up to this point you'd correct me if i'm wrong he said where we are is where we should be so if we get more guidance from him that says otherwise then i would definitely you know take note okay so based on that information the person who's advising indicates that right now that even though it's on foreign can yeah maybe you know for the benefit of everybody involved if we can just get an update from the school physician yep i'll take care of it thank you and i wonder if we had that that shock clinic the vaccination clinic if you guys i think we had a pretty good turnout like it was 80 students or so do we want to maybe plan on like a booster clinic or something i mean i'm thinking like local families that aren't out you know can't travel to get their booster shots and their coping shots and set up something again in the district um the last one the last one was done by our school physician so i'd have to ask him okay i mean it can't hurt you know especially if the numbers go up and i think just a regular reminder to families to teachers to parents like you know if you need to get a booster we encourage you to get to be up to date on your boosters your second shots so you're fully vaccinated one shot's not gonna you know we don't recommend one shot we recommend keeping up with your boosters and stuff any other comments for new business [Music] okay we are now open to the public for any and all items dr gallagher do we have anybody online um actually we do okay and it's a little bit of sad news so i knew this and i was going to bring it up but since miss del conte who normally is a uh yeah normally uh here at our meetings for so many years um she did put one online for us and that is uh to bring attention to on may 21st former maine office secretary joan roberto passed away she worked for the district from 1978 to 2003.

[Applause] let's give band choir our sign language another big round of applause and our color guard will you please be seated hello everyone thank you for joining us as we close out a significant stage in our lives my name is esperanz olynye just in case they mispronounced my name and i was a 2021-2022 student student body president at glendale high school instead of standing here and making jokes to make the car laugh let's highlight how far we've come and how much we've done to start with administration that puts so much effort in providing different opportunities at school from scholarships ct classes to westmech teachers report their all post pandemic and friends and families who held their hands through it all each graduate standing before us has a different battle that made high school difficult and mine is no different as an optimist i believe a good date isn't summed up by the whole day being good but appreciating a good second of a bad day so instead of standing here and sharing a sob story i want to share my line of dark days i think my parents who supported me financially and pushed me towards working on my mental and spiritual health i want to thank my older siblings solange brown and soleil who were amazing role models and younger siblings who through love kept me laughing and stressed friends who educated my thoughtless actions and loved me through thick and thin as we begin graduation a quick reminder to one to each and everyone who we just graduate and we are still taking this in so please keep those what's next questions to yourself give it a week and to the graduating class of 2022 do take in what an amazing accomplishment you have achieved high school is not something simple given why friends and family have gathered here to see you take your next step congratulations to glendale class of 2022 [Applause] excellent job esperance at this time we're going to hear from our vocal ensemble or glendale coral performing for good uh [Music] that people come into our lives for a reason bringing something we must learn [Music] i don't know if i believe that's true i knew like a comic book [Music] because i know you i have been changed [Music] much [Music] my is [Music] because i knew you [Music] for the things [Music] any wrong [Music] if i've been changed for the better [Music] i do believe i have been changed for the better [Music] because i know you have this [Music] [Applause] that was amazing thank you very much at this time i'd like to introduce miss emu our senior class president [Applause] first and foremost let's give our gratitude to the families friends and faculty that have taken time out of their day to celebrate this prestigious accomplishment with us over the last few years we have put our blood sweat and tears into this one moment we have created many special memories from staying up late so that we could finish homework and study for tests or most are procrastinating to attending special events such as prom and the parade that is why i am proud to present the senior class gift as a new pa system with this gift we are hopeful that more events can be held surrounding this so that future cardinals can enjoy creating more memories we believe that these memories in high school are fundamental to growth within an individual especially at such an important moment in our lives i know many of you are excited to finally graduate and start your journey on truly becoming independent however we should never forget where we came from this community has played an extremely important role in our lives and i'm sure everyone is more than thankful don't ever forget about your carnal pride with that being said congratulations class of 2022.

donation from international violin competition of indy indianapolis 2022 juried exhibition of student art the monetary donation is an appreciation of mrs katie gray and the metro art program dr north park program those are the uh i'm going to accept donations sergeant motion second to accept the donations on favor say hi school recognition mr key favorite yes um i'd like to share some that our principles have shared and i'll start with mr mcdaniel from southwood junior senior high school he says congratulations to mo lloyd grade 12 for being named baseball across indiana high school player of the week in the past the last five games he was nine and 15 with seven home runs and 20 rbis that's pretty good yes and then of course uh southwest junior senior high would like to recognize angie lashavio and tyler cook for their work coordinating the eighth grade field trip to washington dc the students were able to visit various smithsonian museums the gettysburg civil war battle site the lincoln memorial the pentagon 911 memorial and many other significant historical landmarks also special thank you goes to mr jeffrey finical for helping chaperone the trip also from southwood the southwest community would like to recognize miss egan who will be retiring after 43 years of service to msd at wabash ms egan served as special education teacher but filled so many different roles in the school we appreciate her dedication to the students staff and school best wishes to in your retirement that a couple more here scroll down and then from northfield mr snyder congratulations preparation for this competition and i think i have one more ty lemming and ruby weaver each received junior high citizenship awards at our junior high awards at northfield these are very distinguished and important awards because they are in honor of past nhs students jonathan snyder and rhonda shaw these are awards i received because of how these students treat staff and their fellow classmates as well as their hard work congratulations to tai and ruby and thank you for your positive example and leadership you said at nhs and then mrs moore has a couple sure um the last meeting i think i shared that he had our numbers for summer programming as of just a few minutes ago we have 217 elementary students participating in summer programming um yep 66 are taking part in minds in action which is similar to science and motion and then 151 are going to participate at metro north or southwood and just elementary academics so that's exciting um and then our little knights preschool a couple weeks ago had their licensing visit and passed his flying colors on that and that takes a lot of behind the scenes but they've all had to have their fingerprinting and their tv testing and their cpr and first aid and just this long list to make sure that we are safe programming for our preschoolers so it's exciting very good thank you and i did have another one here southland junior senior high school was proud to announce that seniors joey bland and maya denny have been nominated for the albright gimlich excellence scholarship this 8 000 scholarship honors exceptional senior student athletes who have demonstrated excellence on the field in the classroom and in the community so that's what i have as far as that and now i would like to honor our spotlight [Music] so aubry carey is our student she is a southwood student and she just reminded me today that she is not a freshman she is now a sound lawyer because uh she's no longer a professional so aubry go ahead and tell us a little bit about why you nominated mrs miss me uh missy really likes to interact with the students and she makes learning music fun and she really cares about her students and she's just overall really nice and um mr lacey um yes being a southwood representative as assistant principal go ahead and share a little bit of it well i can speak for mr mcdaniel myself both we're very pleased with uh miss knee having her southward this year uh we went from a halftime choir position halftime band position uh to miss need going full-time choir in band taking that all on um and so she's kind of doing the work of three people now as a choir director band director and our drama director she's also taken that uh just head first i think the first week of school or so she came in office and she said hey can i do the drama uh you know normally sometimes we're making and pleading for people to do things like that so she's done a great job with that just recently had concerts last sunday a couple sundays yeah for band and choir the musical has now taken place involving students from northfield southwood and uh and so it was really really great to see those things and she's just done a great job connecting with our kids and i'd like to just echo that too because that's what i've seen already is just tremendous in the first year and not only just regular the concert band but also a pep band um jazz band you have a jazz band you do some different things with uh some contest and just really have done a lot and i just like with echo i don't want to talk a lot but just to echo that with mr lacy so we really appreciate that yeah so again you are the spotlight this is the new car like i said though we always make everybody read the cards you got to read the card this one yeah that's partners okay it's because you're agreeing to work hard you figure out whether you like software that's so nice but anyways car sheets are soft yeah all right thank you i appreciate it all right let's give it a round of applause you're welcome to stay or you got your picture then because we use was that slimming all right we'll move on in a business plan well they do have chair there's extra chairs and for those we have chairs now so and we can spot like you too if you want to yeah there's like three extra chairs up here now at this point point we're going to move on to public comment for agenda items only i will point out that later in the meeting under the new business we are going to have a hearing that is dedicated to what i suspect most of you are here for so while we don't have any restrictions about making public comment on any agenda item just keep that in mind that we're going to have a larger comment period later so can you anybody want to speak on any of the other items that's on the agenda okay we'll move on to the consent agenda items uh first item is the approval of the minutes from our last meeting on may 10.

navy broadcast we're going to begin with pledge of allegiance [Music] i pledge [Music] one allegiance under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all do we have any public comments tonight hearing that has anyone any members have you received communications that you would like to share um moving on to item five is there a motion to approve the consent agenda as presented [Music] thank you discussion [Music] alan baber um i was going to have mr many hands since he's not here just yet not sure if he's coming or not um move on to our candidates um our candidate interviews because we do have people here for our vacancy which is pretty exciting um i'd like to welcome mrs kyle burns and mr robert holmes for our school committee tonight both have generously volunteered to build an empty growing seat left by the resignation of susan henry in february i would like to extend a sincere thank you to both of you for your interest in representing your town and the schools for the next six months as you may have heard for the boylston berlin boys and regionalization agreement we are all up for re-election in november um i'm going to follow the same system that mr spencer employed in august when we were going through the appointments so part one is that we've reviewed all of your letters of interest and resumes and we've independently researched you on our own time this may include past communications as well as publicly available information i will invite you to come forward introduce yourself and share with us a little bit about yourself we like to keep it to three minutes if possible and each member will have the chance to ask you a question they have prepared they will ask the same question to each candidate and there may be follow-up questions from the committee to those questions and then once the interviews are completed we will openly debate a celebrate on the floor this means that all discussion is going to be public um it's going to be as awkward for you as it is for us um once we have completed deliberations i will ask for a committee member to appoint a candidate to fill the open seat this requires a second from another member if there is no second it doesn't move on to discussion and the motion doesn't pass when there is a second it goes into a discussion and then a vote in order to be appointed at least well let's just say three of five but three of four correct that would be yeah three or four members to vote in favor of the candidate um if three descent the motion doesn't pass should the motion fail and there still can be glad we start the whole process all over again using the same parameters for success and it's hard to to take this advice but please don't be nervous um every member here has been appointed some of us um had other people that we had to stand up and you know speak for ourselves and hope that we were the best candidate um but regardless of whether we had competition or not you know we know what it's like to be in your place and we just want you to know we're not trying to stop you um we just want to try to get to know you better so any questions before we start i would like to invite mrs kyle burns right there thank you you want to tell us a little bit about yourself and why you're going absolutely good evening members of the community school community it's a pleasure to meet you my name is kyle burns and i am a resident of berlin massachusetts i have a first grader at berlin memorial my younger son will start kindergarten in the year in the school year of 2023.
