awesome we can be outside blue skies great weather we're a long way from the gym so when you thank our custodians lisa madden and her crew here and steve houston transportation maintenance for getting this set up for us so we can enjoy this for the students and the families outside here let's give them a round of applause please and again this is a great atmosphere for our students i want to give them a big round of applause to start this off so let's get it going for them okay let's say this is a celebration of their students and you their families it's a community event and i have a pleasure to introduce our first two speakers it will be laurel knight our salutatorian and jenna bailey our valedictorian laurel stardusto [Applause] i have always found it interesting that the word kindergarten means children's garden it is fitting that this preliminary class the beginning of your education is known as a garden a place to nurture and care for learning really each classroom we've been a part of throughout our school career has been a different garden filled with unique experiences and environments that helped us grow as seniors it is easy to long for the kindness of that very first garden the nap time the snack time the extra long recess these seem so nice compared to the stressful high school experience we have all just undergone the projects exams the worldwide pandemic that confined our education to a screen these may have felt like a bitter winter in garden terms the sort of environment that requires grit and perseverance in order to survive yet by sitting here today ready to walk across the stage and complete our journey each and every one of you has proved that you can thrive in any classroom you have shown tremendous growth but beyond this it is important to realize that what you planted in that kinder garden what has prospered and blossomed as you grew through the school system those seeds belong to you we all have an extraordinary capacity for learning it has been nurtured or challenged by various teachers and courses over the years but that desire to long to learn came from within us we were born with an innate drive to learn as two-year-olds we would lick the sand off our hands at the beach or recite obnoxious songs from annoying tv shows we naturally questioned experimented and curiously approached our world while we may have become better scientists by sitting in chemistry or biology lecture halls or fine-tuned our questioning by decoding literature in english class those skills came pre-programmed into our budding brains we were each able to succeed because we started with this seed you may be questioning why you are hearing about the start of your education at a ceremony to congratulate its end to that i would say i am glad that you're still questioning our ability to learn existed long before we started our first day of school and it will exist long after we complete our last our curiosity inquiry and skills of discovery are human not tied to the structures of formal education we will leave east high school but our capacity for learning will not be left behind we can search out knowledge in every new experience of our adult lives we can make the world our new classroom continuing to learn without the confines of a class may look different but the opportunities are countless instead of using its learning we can use instagram to discover new perspectives instead of completing worksheets or papers like those we just sent flying into the air we can fly ourselves to new communities and cultures across the globe instead of collaborating through group projects we can collaborate with future co-workers and create our future families to truly learn more about ourselves instead of learning for the sake of a grade we can learn through the investigation of whatever ignites our interest or by simply being curious and i know we can all continue to learn even without the support of our school because i've witnessed so many of us do this already we have grown our character alongside teammates at practice we have gained insight by volunteering and helping those in need we have even taken advisory or resource time to learn valuable lessons with our friends sometimes outside of the classroom we have learned more at times when there is no curriculum mistakes friends memories that will last a lifetime these are sometimes the greatest teachers as we move beyond east high school we will always have experiences and relationships that can help us grow your cultivated mind the flora that formed from the seeds you planted in kindergarten and that has been nurtured within the various classrooms of your education is ready to move beyond the garden of east high school to all the teachers mentors and family that have cultivated us over the years thank you for your love and support but as we leave as we migrate beyond the comfortable soil that best encourages us to grow our pursuit of learning may be riddled with hardship we may be tempted to stop learning without easy access to the nutrients that feed our mind the overwhelming foreign environment of our future may make us want to wilt even so never stop learning as the brilliant young minds we all are today it is our job to adapt to each novel environment and challenge ourselves to seek knowledge each day as our roots and branches grow beyond the classrooms of east continue to nurture your mind so that it can truly flourish blossom and add to the beauty of the world thank you class of 2022 good afternoon family friends faculty and fellow graduates it is a great honor to be standing in front of you today i would like to start by thanking my parents along with all of the parents and guardians that drove us to and from school stayed up late to help with projects and work tirelessly to help provide us with a better life i would also like to say thank you to the entire staff of east for teaching advising and helping us through some of the yardest years so far of our lives because of our parents guardians and staff we have finally made it we are about to graduate and leave to go our own separate ways i can confidently say that we have learned the skills necessary to succeed in the world each year of school brought change to us freshman year we were the new fish in the sea of students walking the halls as we finally started to figure out our way through school the year came to an end with new friends acting a little older and a little wiser sophomore year brought more change the first three quarters we owned high school we were no longer the youngest we now acted like we knew what we were doing and made sure everyone knew it the biggest change came when no one expected it it started out as a longer spring break something every kid dreams of but it turned into something that we would never forget we lost the fourth quarter of our sophomore year leaving us at home watching videos trying to learn while wondering what the future of school would look like well junior year came more changes occurred we started out in person at school wearing masks it was strange but we all got used to it as the year progressed just as we thought things were going back to normal we moved back to online schooling after thanksgiving break third quarter brought even more change hybrid schooling i don't know how everyone's experience was but i had a hard time coming twice a week and trying to learn on my own at home fourth quarter junior year we finally went back to school four times full time it was difficult at first but we got used to it and finally finished out the year in a new kind of normal fashion this year brought even more change after a year and a half of the world feeling like it was at a standstill we were able to get back to normal we were finally seniors at the top of the school this year we've gotten to go to school every day and are now allowed to go to school without masks we have witnessed the pandemic full circle our high school experience has been unlike any other filled with new obstacles every day high school has been a four year journey our hard work and dedication to the programs that each of us love have contributed to the success of us graduating at east we have been exposed to ap dual credit and advanced courses that have allowed us to get a step up on college some of us have taken advantage of the c4 programs offered at both high schools these programs have given some certifications that will allow us to go into the workforce with a better understanding of our fields others have been involved in sports and clubs that have taught them valuable lessons in leadership and teamwork i along with others was involved in the performing arts program i participated in any band i could and enjoyed band class every day mr rogers and mr berkshire made every class entertaining and educational i learned several real world skills through band possibly even more than other classes taught me east has prepared us to go into the college the military the workforce or whatever future may lie ahead through classes and activities like the c4 pathways clubs sports performing arts and all of our senior projects this year we've learned valuable lessons that have prepared us for what we may face in the future we've learned how to navigate stressful situations while keeping our composure and to expect the unexpected while being flexible during these unknown times of coven our four years of high school may have been interrupted by copen but we have still learned a lot allowing us to go out into the world better prepared i have enjoyed our years together a lot has changed over the past four years we may not have had four full years of normal high school but we did get four full years of memories and stories that we will share forever as such we have learned along with the faculty how to learn on our own while at home and how to focus when there are several distractions around these are all valuable real world skills that are needed after high school now as we leave our east home we embark on the future and change in our life change is not always easy but it is a part of life embrace the change live every moment as if it were your last if there's someone that you've been wanting to say something to say it you might not get the opportunity again if there's something that you've been wanting to do do it there's no time like the present keep in touch with those that you love and continue making memories remember the good times and all the lessons that we have learned here as author c s lewis once wrote there are far far better things ahead than any we leave behind so i say to you look forward to the future and the change it brings congratulations class of 2022 we made it [Applause] all right thank you laurel and jenna for your words wisdom and advice before i introduce this class to dr roberts afternoon family members friends and staff members thank you for all you have done to support our graduates as they navigated themselves through the rapids of a twisting river that places them in this location here today as graduates of columbus east high school graduates congratulations to you for the abilities you have displayed during your entire school career but especially during these challenging last three school years to successfully sell over under and through the rough waters placed before you your perseverance earns you the title of graduate columbus east high school as i reflect on these last three school years it is you your graduating class that i believe had to demonstrate the most resilience to end up in the seat in which you are currently sitting your sophomore year ended abruptly your junior year included a combination of in-person and virtual learning your senior year although in person for each of our scheduled instructional days was still affected by covet 19 related challenges four years of high school and only one your freshman year that can truly be considered normal at least from the perspective of what we all used to consider normal now that you are here in that seat now that you have completed one journey now that you have prepared yourself for the future what is the future for you what does come next are you just going to settle for whatever it is that comes next or are you allowing yourself to dream and if so do you have a plan to accomplish that dream i referenced rapids river and rough waters in my opening comments it was a setup a setup so that i could quote from an amazing philosopher and author of one of my favorite literary pieces garth brooks the river you know a dream is like a river ever changing as it flows and a dreamers just a vessel that must follow where it goes as you look to tomorrow and the hope that is there your dream is a river and you are the vessel that chases it too many times we stand aside and let the waters slip away to what we put off until tomorrow has now become today was a tomorrow not too long ago it is hard to understand now but time goes quickly your parents and grandparents will attest to that soon tomorrow whatever that is for you the start of your dream job completion of your dream post-secondary opportunity marriage to your dream person the birth of your dream children some other dream that demonstrates success just like today will be today i will sell my vessel till the river runs dry like a bird upon the wind these waters are my sky i'll never reach my destination if i never try dream dream big and then try like heck to achieve it all of you have demonstrated that you have it in you on behalf of all of our 2000 staff members in our corporation we are proud of what you have accomplished today and know that you will accomplish much more when tomorrow becomes today members of the columbus east class of by the power vested in me by the state of indiana and our autumn [Applause] and now it's up mcintyre [Applause] is each year the graduating class leaves a gift behind for the benefit of columbus east high school the class of 2022 student assembly has chosen to honor the memory of lilly streevil who tragically passed away at the beginning of the school year we are gifting this school with a memorial planter of lily's in the front office of columbus east high school to keep her in the forefront of our minds let us take a moment of silence to remember lily today we ring the senior bell to symbolize four fundamental virtues loyalty honesty respect and unselfishness these honorable qualities should be guiding principles as we encounter obstacles in our future the first of these is loyalty loyalty is devotion whether to yourself your friends or your country president wilson reminds us that loyalty means nothing unless it has at its heart the absolute principle of self-sacrifice out of loyalty flows honesty respect and unselfishness it has been said that honesty is the cornerstone of all success without which confidence and ability to perform shall cease to exist today signifies a cornerstone in our lives without honesty we cannot move forward from this cornerstone to the next without confidence and with confidence and the ability to perform honesty is also a necessary component in gaining respect respect is a virtue we hope to gain in our lifetime but as albert einstein points out it is not until we respect ourselves that we can gain the esteem of others or rather only then will it come in its own accord we must learn to respect ourselves for who we are so we may inspire others to do the same [Music] to put another's life in front of your own is to excel in the only game that matters the game of life it has been said that the true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good unselfishness is the virtue that ties human character together today we have reached the stage in our lives that allows us to enter the real world with a good conscience we signify the completion of this stage in our lives by the turning of our tassels which represents a movement from childhood to adulthood from high school to a world beyond will you please join me in the turning of our tassel [Applause] [Music] um the whole like garden thing it was so good [Applause] i apologize 149.

[Applause] so good morning everyone and welcome to columbus north's class of 2022 graduation ceremony after all the life has thrown at us during these last four years who would have believed we would be here before i begin i'd like to take the opportunity to capture this very special moment back when our parents were our age they didn't have the same advantages that technology brings us today they would have to take this film and get it developed to be able to view these pictures and i find that this relates to us in this very moment some of you may already know me but my name is ella ferger and i am this year's senior class president i am a virgo i am left-handed and i absolutely despise tomatoes these are just a few of the things that make me specifically who i am and just like me all of us have these special traits that make you who you are but the funny thing is is that as i'm talking about individuality on one of the most important days of our lives we're all looking pretty uniform however these caps and gowns symbolize unity they symbolize that we made it through these last four years together even though no two years were alike our class persevered and our uniqueness shine through each and every one of us has our own stories and after today those stories change even more i can't see what the future holds for any of us but just like the photos on my own camera i know that we are not fully developed yet and high school is only a small chapter of our lives as we go our separate ways the memories and lessons we have learned here will help us to grow and define ourselves i only get two minutes to give this speech and for those of you who know how much i'd love to talk that's quite the limit a restriction as we have grown up our lives have been filled with these limits and restrictions set by authority figures who have our safety and best interest at heart as much as they are necessary they can be very frustrating too and so i have some great news for you no more limits our lives are just beginning and we only get one shot at it so i say we go out there and show the world what kind of incredible individuals columbus north has created am i right the last requirement to graduate is to walk across the stage and get your diploma so wise words for me um don't trip as we go on to the next chapter without these limits and restrictions we will remember these moments we were able to capture at columbus north to the class of 22 i wish you all the best of luck and i'll see you all again in five years for the most amazing reunion party ever thank you to all of those that helped us including teachers parents and fellow classmates it is an honor to represent the 150th class of columbus north and congratulations to all of you [Applause] i'm going to be completely honest i was terrified about tripping walking up to the podium just now ls speech has given me another thing to overthink about but i'm very grateful that did not happen good morning to everyone my name is willa trump i know some of you have traveled great distances to be here and i'm honored to have you all here at memorial gym to celebrate the 150th graduating class of columbus north high school we are here to celebrate the journeys and successes the graduates of the class of 2022 have strived to achieve everyone's efforts have paid off however none of the students have done this alone in fact we have all had important people in our lives help us through our 13 years help us through our 13 years of formal education to get to this point and for all of them we are filled with gratitude i'm grateful for the influential individuals who have made a massive impact on my life it all began with my kindergarten teacher mrs payet he humored me when i requested that she call me peyton manning instead of will she honored my wish for several months until i decided i'd like to go better then there's mr bodart my former elementary school basketball coach who taught me about mental toughness teamwork and the importance of sarcasm a skill i use to this day additionally my high school cross-country coaches have instilled important characteristics in me such as dedication drive and purpose that i will carry forward every day for the rest of my life lastly i would like to thank mrs larson my trusted therapist who has given me the tools to help me cope and believe in myself and i am forever grateful for all of her help often we take compassion and assistance from others for granted we rarely take the opportunity to reflect on where we are at now and how we got there but chances are we did not get there alone from first-hand experience i know how crowded the guidance office is is on the first few days of school and freshman orientation counselors and support staff are flooded with schedule change requests to make sure we have the classes that we need our amazing coaching and teaching staff spend hours of the week away from their families sacrificing their own personal time to coach and mentor us to coach and mentor us to become the best athletes and leaders that we can possibly be and of course none of us would be here without our amazing parents and the other adults in our lives who support encourage us to be the best that we can be their kindness and generosity have impacted us all in positive ways and these special people in our lives do these acts out of pure selflessness personally i'm especially thankful for my mom my dad my brothers and my grandparents for their continued love and encouragement i'm so grateful for their guidance and support we should acknowledge our family's efforts as they actively help us grow as people a simple thank you can mean the world to someone as we continue on to the next stages of our lives whether that be trade school the military college or the workforce i would like to ask the class of 2022 to do these three simple things express gratitude daily even small acts of kindness towards strangers go a long way secondly express that gratitude towards an individual who has personally influenced you whether it's a teacher coach or parent actively show or tell them the impact their kindness has had on your life this might encourage others to pay it forward and spread some positivity finally as former president jfk stated as we express our gratitude we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them in other words be the person who others are grateful for no matter what path you may go down always be the person who positively influences those around you in the infamous words of ferris bueller life moves pretty fast if you don't stop and look around once in a while you can miss it our time together in high school is limited but gratitude is everlasting recognizing the short time we have is even a more important reason to express gratitude every single day be grateful for the present and realize that each day is an opportunity thank you and congratulations to my fellow members of the graduating class of 2022 [Applause] good morning to the class of 2022 the 150th columbus north graduating class let's try that again good morning to the class of 2022 the 150th columbus north graduating class fellow graduates thank you for coming and bringing your loved ones to this special occasion our high school graduation for those of you who don't know me i'm matthew luke and i'm deeply honored and thrilled to be able to have the opportunity to address you all yeah if you had told me six years ago that i would be in this position i wouldn't have believed you i remember clearly being in sixth grade when i watched that year's north graduation speeches my parents then asked me if i saw myself giving a speech during my own graduation i quickly said no and when they asked why i said well i'm terrible at pe my push-ups look like a seal flopping around i do anything to not run at all there's no way i'm going to be successful enough to give a graduation speech well clearly that aged well while i still laugh thinking about my elementary school self i often wonder what was that one thing that allowed me to change that mindset that mindset that i wasn't worthy enough to become better at pe or weightlifting that mindset that i could never be a part of the men's tennis team i then realized what it was than a doll factor my tennis coach at almost every single practice or match talked about this nadal factor in reference to spanish tennis player raphael the nadal factor has the idea of never giving up as nadal is known for his fighting spirit and never giving up even during his most toughest matches while my teammates and i constantly joke about this nadal factor it has helped us through some of our most crucial moments from coming back into deciding doubles match to upset the number three team in the state to saving match points in the regional championship to advance the semi-state my team has been able to conquer these mental tests under pressure similarly throughout high school we all have had our own share of challenges ranging from understanding subjects we're not necessarily strong in to debating whether to finish a homework assignment tonight or finish it at the last minute some challenges are manageable while others are more emotionally tough but the most important thing is that we overcame them the covenant 19 pandemic interrupted our high school lives but we never gave up the fight to achieve the normal we once knew as a result we are here in person at memorial gym on one of the most memorable days of our lives [Applause] we didn't overcome these challenges accidentally we've constantly been surrounded by people who never give up and fight their way to the end our parents and guardians they've been with us for 18 years from our highest highs to our lowest lows from our greatest achievements to our most heartbreaking defeats even if they have had their own personal challenges they've never given up on us our high school we've all been part of a high school that has seen 150 years of hard work 150 years of overcoming obstacles 150 years of perseverance 150 years of excellence and most importantly 150 years of never giving up whether it's in our academics sports performing arts or other extracurriculars we've all seen peers who have that fighting spirit and have achieved the seemingly impossible our teachers perhaps the most under-appreciated people in the world have been some of our closest mentors their drive to continue to show up to school and engage with their students has shown us their dedication and passion and not a single hint of lost courage as they maintain a positive attitude every single day as much as today is our day it is also theirs as they've helped shape our learning and future goals so let's give a round of applause to all our teachers and student faculty so as we leave our comfort zones begin to start the next chapter of our journeys we might have questions about ourselves how will i overcome challenges in college am i ready to be an adult what will i do after i walk across the stage who am i why am i here we don't all have the answers yet but that's because our learning isn't done we're all venturing into unknown territory and obstacles may pop up directly to drag us down remember that if plan a doesn't work well good thing there's 25 other letters in the alphabet even though the phrase is simple it echoes a reoccurring message never give up a wise person once said the only thing standing between you and your goal is the story you keep telling yourself as to why you can't achieve it the only way you can fail is if you give up our brains may only make up a fraction of our bodies but they are the difference that can determine whether or not we overcome our challenges today is only the beginning as long as we remain open to new learning opportunities and embrace the value of perseverance we can eventually obtain a deeper understanding of who we are and who we want to be my fellow graduates you are not scared you are courageous you are not weak you are powerful you are not ordinary you are the market so keep trying try try again keep trying because your hard work and persistence will be rewarded in the end never give up because you never know what success lies around the corner allow that mindset to guide you to new paths and new journeys to unexpected experiences that further your learning wherever you go don't forget an important lesson columbus north high school taught you impossible is nothing starting today your future is in your hands and as long as you maintain that nadal factor you will definitely go on to do great things and live a life you enjoy the fire burning inside you is mining it is waiting to burn brightly you are meant to do tremendous things so what will your story we can't wait to hear it in the future thank you and congratulations again to everyone in the class of 2022 for your remarkable accomplishments [Applause] class of 2022 on behalf of the staff faculty and administration of columbus north high school to all the students participating in commencement ceremonies this morning we say congratulations to family and friends we welcome you and thank you for joining us on this joyous occasion what a wonderful time of life know as you leave here we love you we have seen your many positive accomplishments while you've been here these observations lead us to know that while the world is in commotion we are in good hands as you move forward and good things are coming ella will and matthew thank you for your remarks a quick recap of what we just heard number one we have all have our own individual stories but there's more to come number two be grateful and number three although i will say matthew i was a little disappointed you said some people wait till the last minute to do their homework that caught me a little off guard never give up beautiful messages as i reflect upon the virtues of this class i would be remiss if i didn't say that the amazement i am raised by your resilience but more importantly i'm amazed by your focus i am grateful for that ability that you've had to focus over the last few years as a class you were able to distance yourself from the things that mattered least and you were able to focus on those things that mattered most while all around you swirled the world in commotion distractions and disruptions i am humbled by those characteristics that you've shown and that you have demonstrated to be here today being a part of today allows you to stand in great company several times today you've heard the number 150 for 150 years columbus the community of columbus has held some type of high school graduation ceremony each class as they've gone through columbus for 150 years has given something of themselves and taken something from that education and has built upon that they've taken that tapestry if you will and they've made something for you to move forward with and i see you weaving into that tapestry resilience and focus as the sesquicenteal class of columbus while you're here you've prepared yourself for a world that now needs your knowledge but more importantly they need your wisdom and your kindness although you've been through difficult challenges that many would consider difficult you are better because of it you have developed strong habits of mind and you'll learn to live the bulldog way use both now as a transition to a world that not only awaits you but to a world that needs you those who spoke this morning gave us a pattern for that don't forget the pattern continue to write your story be grateful and never give up class of 2022 you came here with goals and aspirations and today you leave here standing a little taller and reaching a little further and being a little better you have entered columbus north high school to learn my charge to you as your principles now go forth to serve at this time i present the class of 2022 assessed incentive class to dr jim roberts superintendent of schools and in doing so i certify that they have met all the necessary requirements for graduation dr roberts [Applause] good morning family members friends and staff members thank you for all you have done to support our graduates as they navigated themselves it's so easy to take it for granted we thank you for all your expertise compassion and patience i know you guys made it look easy well sometimes we made it look easy but we got through it and we thank you again on behalf of the school board thank you for the wonderful work doing the pandemic and the wonderful work that you can do continue to do for our families and students thank you makes it really easy for us mr smith blue ribbon update sir mr president members of the board dr smith progress continues lc matter of fact we're going to start punching the third floor so that means 95 plus percent finished uh in that area moving in in june or july uh elsia again offices space on the second and first floor continue on uh lcgm that's a new entry on the east side and lobby area as well as the gym upgrades ln almost uh weather tight with windows and doors going in a new addition again inside work continues ln pool roof is really going well a little bit of break on the weather helps a lot interior work also continues on as the roof goes in fall creek valley uh you see the chillers on the left they're in and hopefully by the first of july will be operational uh in the building along with the you can go to the next slide the boilers in place plumbing electrical continue both at fall creek and at belser middle school thank you sir questions or comments for this just update i would just say having taken the tour of lc last week about a week and a half ago it's it's impressive it really is impressive thank you for all your hard work everyone who's worked on that thanks any other questions or comments for mr smith thank you sir proposed lunch fees for the 2022 2023 school year agenda item i was hoping that i would not see dr smith but we know it is what it is mr streets give us update sir mr president dr smith members of the board as you know this past year the federal government had passed where we were able to offer free lunch and breakfast to all of our students that provision has expired for next school year we're hoping they would renew it but congress has not done that as of today so that means we have to look at what our fees should be next year and on the board you see what those fees are that represents a cent increase for let's see yeah lunch at the elementary in middle school 15 cents at the high school a tencent increase in breakfast that may seem like a lot but we have not changed our fees since 2016-17 school year so we've done very well but with the added food costs as you've seen when you go to the grocery store we feel we need to raise our prices as well accordingly so i'll ask you for approval for those later in the meeting and as you can see there's eight of our school or i think it's eight eight of our elementaries and two elcs i believe that qualify for the community eligibility program and that means students at those schools do not pay anything for their lunch or breakfast questions or comments for mr shrees i just had one in general um what's the guidelines to meet for the community eligibility program for a school to meet that if i recall correctly you have to have 65 percent of your school qualify for free or reduced lunch okay thank you mr let's talk to our community a little bit because i know we understand the state of the economy inflation but we raise the price is it do we benefit from racing prices or what what what determines prices to go up 10 cent 15 [ __ ] and it don't seem like a lot but today that's a lot so help the community understand well what dictates those price increases is a self-supporting fund that means we have to pay for all our costs with the revenue that comes in from both us and the federal and state government as you know food costs are going up more than fifteen twenty percent on some items right as well as wages have gone up so to cover those additional costs is why we need to raise our lunch fees as presented and then help us understand so as a district we try to do everything we can to help our families but there's not much we can do in this area because of what mr sreeds well there again we have to cover our costs and in the past the this past year the federal government covered all our costs for us they're not doing that moving forward they're just covering the cost of the free and reduced portion of those those children so we have to cover all our other costs that we have right and the fact we haven't had an increase since 1617 we have tried to help our parents as much as we can and we're hoping the 10 what we did may not be enough but we think we can absorb it if it's not and then next year we'll reevaluate and see where we are thank you sir and also is there any indication that congress will come together over the summer and make these lunches free again and if so these price increases will just be moved to another year it's my understanding that has been proposed but has been stopped in the legislative process in congress okay thank you and madam vice president i re had the pleasure of meeting the secretary of agriculture two weekends ago and the answer is no i asked that question on behalf of all the school districts in the state of indiana since i was invited but that was the question and right now there's not a sign that that's going to change thank you one thing i would like to point out is the provision for the free lunch actually ended the end of may but we did get a waiver for a jump start to still allow those to be free for this summer for the students that attend jump start that's good news thank you sir any other questions or comments on our proposed lunch fees thank you disposal of vehicles update street we brought this to you in the past with different vehicles but from time to time we'll have either buses or some of our other fleet that have no resale value and are not operable and we've worked with the lawrence fire department and the swat teams in the past they would like to use those for training purposes and then when they're finished with them we get the salvage value out of those vehicles so that's what this is we're asking for your permission to dispose of those vehicles to allow them to use them for training purposes and then we'll get the salvage value when they're complete with their training exercises for questions or comments on disposal of vehicles thank you sir our department of education flexibility waivers proposed virtual education board resolution mr president dr smith members of the board later in the meeting i will recommend approval of a resolution granting permission to submit uh indiana department of education flexibility waiver indiana code currently requires the establishment of a separate virtual school for any school corporation that has at least 100 students enrolled that receive at least 50 percent of their instruction virtually we obviously met that threshold this school year uh but with the discontinuation of connect lt there will be a significantly smaller number of students receiving their education virtually however we do have students that for portions of the school year are placed in home access and they would fall under this definition indiana's performance-based accreditation system allows for us to request what's called a 1003 accreditation flexibility waiver we're going to ask for that waiver to maintain enrollment for students learning virtually at their home school we brought this to you about this time last school year you're actually able to allow to request this waiver for up to three years and my recommendation will be to submit this for the following three three years i present this as information at this time questions or comments from mr kuznick thank you sir thank you viola policy updates mr president members of board dr smith tonight i bring forward to uniola uniolapolicy0167.3 participation of board meetings for first reading the policy revision is in response to changes made to state law regarding public participation in school meetings i do recommend the board receive this as information tonight questions comments on the neola policy update presented tonight it's appreciating additional comments from you sir yeah i'd be happy to answer any questions and if the board members have and if you haven't had a chance to look at it you know we'll be taking it up for second reading and approval but it's in response you know to the recent legislative changes as you know we've always had you know public participation opportunities this refines that and makes it a little bit more specific on some of the procedural things to be consistent with the new state it becomes effective on july 1.

it's my understanding from reading it that it doesn't change our policy very much no i think that maybe the most significant part of it is that it looks like under the state law you have to allow public comment per an agenda item where we're taking action on it and that we can't just have a lump sum overall a lot of time so as you go through the proposed policy you'll see that it contemplates that for each agenda item where someone signs up there's a certain allowed allotted amount of time if more people sign up than that a lot of time then you divide the allotted time of that number of people or reduced but you know each significant agenda item we would have an opportunity for people to sign up if they would like to make comment and you have to do that before we take any formal action on it thank you any other questions or comments thank you dr harshbarger thank you mr friji financial update mr street yes mr president dr smith members of the board if you look at the general fund you see all but one they have a green check mark that means we're doing better than we anticipated and the one that's not was a transfer out and that's just due to a timing on that item so we're doing very well there transportation the item of concern may you may when you look at it may be the salaries but what that is versus projection is we did projections based on what we had last year but we've had a few more extra double routes and some extenuating circumstances this year but still by the end of the year we should still be okay within that fund to where our projected amounts have been thank you any questions or comments on our financial update thank you sir war committee chair reports foundation that would be me hello good morning so we had our um our race last weekend and um and it was well attended by lawrence students as you read i'm sure as you read in the notes both buses from the high schools were loaded up to help with that race and um our our coaches were in attendance and um it's it's a it's a great way to get the get the family and the kids out for a nice race on a saturday morning saturday holiday morning that's you know we have our golf outing is uh this saturday june 7th tuesday june 7th and i do believe um that there are some sponsorships left if you wish madam vice president you must not be a golfer that would be circled on your calendar it would be circled on my calendar it would be got you back we got plenty of people to go don't worry yep thank you thank you for the update lawrence parks and recreation um thank you the fort bend farmer's market opens this thursday june 2nd it will be every thursday from 4 to 7 p.m at the cultural campus also i may need dr nesbits and put on i don't have a pickleball update i do know that there was another construction delay um do you have anything okay yes i know that we were able thank you to the district for allowing um the people signed up to utilize the craig middle school um courts out back that's all i have thank you thank you thank you any additional updates on policy let's freeze anything else well there's another batch that is on the way and dr harshberger tells me that it consists of about four new policies and 14 amended policies and so i don't know at some point a few meetings down the road will be presenting more policies for your review i think most of these i'm sure are in response to other state law changes anything else thank you for those updates board thank you on to our action items approval of curricular resource fees for the 2022 2023 school year mr just an incredibly gifted human being and we I know are so fortunate to be able to work with her so frequently I know the students absolutely adore her I absolutely adore her and I hope she forgives dear to my heart it is a piece entitled One Voice by Ruth Moody and the wh and Jenny's if you don't know the wh and Jenny's you should look them up they're absolutely fantastic but the real reason that this piece holds a very particular place in my heart especially today is because there are three people who I need to recognize uh who I have known for and awful long time I have three incredible seniors in this Ensemble and it just so happens that they're going to be the ones that start this piece for us so I would love to recognize Joseph toolio Fatima n and Amir [Applause] abaka the four of hello everybody and good evening welcome to the first half of our celebration of arts tonight in ewing we are so happy to have you for our ring in singapore portion featuring the master singers and the ewing hand bell choir they're very excited to show for you what they've prepared today and don't forget at intermission to stop by the art show in the senior caf throughout the evening i'll be thanking a lot of people there are a lot of people too thanks so i'll just get hit those names as we go throughout the night i'm mr minter and first please welcome to the stage the ewing high school hand bell choir [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] do [Music] so [Music] so that first piece you heard was a selection of what would be traditional wedding bells in the british culture so this is something that you might expect to hear should you go to a british wedding when they ring the church bells at the beginning to signal the beginning of the service each of the set of bells and set of chimes are supposed to match a dignitary that walks down the aisle of the church whether it be the royal court uh king queen some sort of duke or or whoever it might be uh and i i really thought it was it's such an ethereal really beautiful sound and so interesting uh for for a wedding and an awesome feast now the next piece might come as a surprise to many old lang zine a lot of people associate this with new years and it is a long time away from new year's but what i find this piece to really mean is a celebration of endings and new beginnings and at this moment i would like to celebrate a person who is ending their time with us and starting a new beginning so i would like to recognize our sole senior of handbell stephanie frolio [Applause] stephanie will be going on to study biomedical engineering at tcnj so another round of applause for stephanie and her four years of incredible devotion to this group [Applause] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Applause] ah [Music] so [Music] hey [Music] [Applause] oh before we get our next piece there's a lot of people i would like to thank i'd like to start with all of the you who are in the audience today the parents and the friends who support their students so incredibly without you none of them would be here and none of them would be so willing to make the incredible music that they share with you tonight so number one thank you to you number two i'd like to thank all of the ewing high administration who make all of this possible thank you to mr shmeel who i know i saw make such amazing music so if i can have a round of applause for all of those people yourselves included thank you so much [Applause] our final piece for the handbells that we're going to leave you with today is a piece called dona nobis pachem uh donadobi's pachem translates to peace on earth and we found this one very poignant this year uh so much so that we would like to dedicate this piece of music to all those who have been victims of gun violence in the united states everyone across the world as well who have found themselves victim to to such a terrible and tragic event especially in light of recent events in our world and in our country you'll notice that this piece starts off very serene and very simple and then very quickly builds into a sort of chaos and as you'll notice this chaos starts to disappear as we find our own piece and what that means for ourselves so we hope you enjoy our final piece of the evening dona nobius pacha [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] bye [Music] so [Music] so [Applause] so foreign [Applause] africa [Music] stimulus foreign [Music] [Applause] south africa [Applause] the selection you just heard was entitled shosholoza a south african freedom song that depicts the sounds of trains as they move on their journey through south africa train being the symbolization of freedom and escaping oppression and so in that middle section when you hear the stimulus that's supposed to be the sound of the train as it chugs along on its course and you heard soloist jaden white [Applause] [Music] [Applause] our next selection will be 16 tons 16 tons [Music] some people say a man is made out of mud a poor man's made out of muscle and blood muscle and blood and skin and bones a mind that's weak and a back that's strong you load 16 tons what do you get another day older and deeper in debt saying peter don't you call me cause i can't go i owe my soul to the company [Music] i'm oh [Music] saint peter don't you call me cause i can't go [Applause] to the company [Music] [Applause] now before we move on to our final selection i have some very special people i would like to acknowledge in this group as well our seniors who have been with us through thick and thin who are on to greener pastures now but we'll always call ewing their home starting in the soprano section anaya glover moving on down we have fatima nadier into the altos we have kiara sickles [Applause] and last but certainly not least amira bogger [Applause] seniors i know i speak for everybody in this room when i say i am so grateful for your musicianship for your demeanor for your attitude for everything that you brought to this group this year and in years past so from my heart thank you so very much and good luck [Music] your children are not your children they are the sons and the daughters of life longing for itself they come through you but they are not from you and though they are with you they are not to you you can give them your love but not your thoughts they have their own thoughts you can house their bodies but not their souls for their souls dwell in a place of tomorrow which you cannot visit not even in your dreams you can strive to be like them but you cannot make them just like you strive to be like them but you cannot make them just like you your children are not your children they are the sons and the daughters of life longing for itself they come through you but they are not from you and though they are with you they belong not to you you can give them your love but not your thoughts they have their own thoughts they have their own thoughts you can house their bodies but not their souls for their soul as well in a place of tomorrow which you cannot visit not even in your dreams you can try to be like them but you cannot make them just like you try to be like them but you cannot make them just like you [Applause] thank you so much for attending the ring and sing portion of today's festivities i hope that you'll take this time in between now and our next performances to slide on over to the senior caf and check out all of the amazing artwork that is on display so please go ahead and do that and we'll see you around 7 30 for the second half of performances thank you so much everybody wow
