[Music] [Applause] so man this has been quite a year right from the start of september we have hit the ground running now in the spring of 2021 we returned to classes but this was the year that we were really back every kid every day and it was awesome we saw the return of friday night football on those chilly autumn nights with pack stands and blaring instruments from the band i had no idea how much i missed the apache song [Music] hey let's come around with plus so we also saw the rebirth of spartanum and our music concerts and our art show to packed houses with families and friends cheering on congratulating the awesome performances of our kids and we saw our extracurricular clubs bring back an enrichment to our student body through the clubs like model congress key club gsa the math team and robotics i have always felt that these are the things that are the lifeblood of our school and that life finally returned this year but we all know it was not without challenges but you know what tonight is a celebration we aren't going to talk about how this graduating class had to miss out one of the defining moments of every high school kids career the sophomore mcas so to the students if you really want that one back just let me know and i will reach out to commissioner riley now this graduating class they have been just a phenomenal group to lead us this year to be their principal i feel like i need to channel my inner ted lasso and say i feel like we fell out of a lucky tree hit every branch on the way down and ended up in a pool of cash and sour patch kids you see in high schools seniors lead they set the climate and the tone for any school year and i won't lie that some classes can definitely be tougher than others however with so much uncertainty starting this fall this was the right group of seniors for this year a story that i think best encapsulates this group of soon-to-be graduates before us is from their senior banquet back in april just to put it into context i've been to a dozen of these banquets over the years as with most things in a school year there's a rhythm to the event in the first hour the students eat take pictures and dedicate the yearbook to a staff member in the second hour half of them dance while the other half leaves when we reach the end of the night there's a handful of students left on the dance floor as the lights go on however this year something different happened this year they all stayed every single kid when the clock struck 10 and we turned the lights on at the end the banquet hall was absolutely packed and the students were still in the middle of the dance floor we even joked with some of them about playing some bad music just to get them to go home it was a special moment for a special class they didn't want it to be over but as with all good things it had to come to an end it was closing time it was time to open up all the doors and let them back out into the world and now we sit here tonight and as with all previous graduating classes who have walked the halls of esau middle high school their four years have come to an end and well those four years were good what comes next will be as well so as you go back out into that world i challenge you to make it good not just good for yourself but good for those around you the world can be tough it can be cold and it can be cruel but you here you are good and this good thing called high school is ending because this world needs you good luck to the class of 2022 [Applause] hi everyone i'm nolan johnson i'm the senior class president for this year [Applause] before i get started with this jumble of words i like to call a speech my mom really pestered me about getting as much pictures as i could so i thought that one from here could get everyone all in one so we can all get out of here as soon as possible so if you don't mind i'm just going to take a quick selfie i think of the graduating class all right on three we're going to say 22.

one two three okay all right good afternoon everyone and welcome to the class of 2022's graduation ceremony i would first like to begin with thanking our senior class advisors ms reed and mr florey for their diligent work with us to give the senior class the best year possible as well as my fellow class advisors stephanie lacroix ainsley smith nicholas cassidy and caitlin gibbons for working as a team all year long and working together to make each of our events possible a shout out to mr morgan is due as well for being the best networker i know as he would say and to miss card for letting for letting us borrow all of our kitchen equipment really sorry about that spatula by the way i would also like to thank mr page for putting up with all of our crazy fundraiser and event ideas while also being very lenient and the thanks to the entirety of the faculty who let their students out of class and did what they could to support the senior class we appreciate you to the families of the graduates before you thank you for leaning us down this road and into the seats we then will leave our childhood from and walk into the rest of our adult lives one of the strongest memories i've had over the course of my high school career actually came from outside of school it was during the junior skip day last year all of us were staying on the beach enjoying twizzlers and volleyball when the election results came out for next year's class advisors i remember the shock that ran through me when seeing my name in the email but it was not because i had won however because i had realized that all of us now knew this aspect of our senior year and it was in that moment that i first felt like a senior the rest of the year flew by faster than diane in a golf cart and now we're here graduating i think that the most memorable moments from this year were running out onto the turf after mon scored the winning goal at the soccer finals game against nasser or getting actually soaked with sweat could be just me from dancing all night at her banquet or getting chased down by a friend wearing a wig and toading a water water gun all these moments brought joy to so many of us however during the same four years we were here the class of 22 also faced many obstacles that i do not think anyone needs a reminder of these struggles and also good memories are what helped shape the young adults sitting before you today and when we all go home tonight or to other places a new obstacle will present itself adulthood some of us will go far or stay close but we almost moved past the place where we have been for so long and many of us will face us alone quite scary however necessary being on our own is a big change for most of us so know you're not alone and being uncertain for the months to come know that being alone is not always a bad thing it is when you will have the opportunity to reflect on your true self and see the person you most desire to be for the first time the path we follow will be entirely our choice and the person that the rest of the world will see is entirely up to you yes we will all make mistakes at times and then make many more mistakes but i urge you to embrace these mistakes and in doing so learn how to move past them for that is how true character is built in addition to this i encourage everyone here to dream as well if there's one thing these past four years has taught us besides control f on a quizlet was that life can change very quickly dream for yourself dream of the person you can be be ambitious every day and do not settle for less than what you know you deserve even if it means being called stubborn we all may have what we dream for it just depends on how hard you're willing to work i'm extraordinarily proud to be part of this year's graduating class i have never had the pleasure of knowing a group of more individualistic people and that is where our strength lies to all of you be ambitious be stubborn and dream for you are the only person capable of stopping yourself from getting what you want to the class of 22 are you feeling 22 yet but actually thank you for the years of links laughs and love never forget the people seeing around you close each other who made us ready for this day i wish you all the best as you head into your next chapter and lastly ghostbar ends thank you and congratulations [Applause] good evening class of 2022 parents teachers alumni and anyone else who may be in attendance this evening i'm aaron hamilton i was not elected class president um i like to think i'm pretty okay at writing speeches though so i guess we'll find out anyone who has had to write a speech knows that coming up with a topic is one of the hardest parts in writing this i thought there's a lot of high school experiences i could reflect on getting through remote learning persevering through difficult classes or having fun at school organized events like spartanum but we've done enough reflecting on the past graduation is about looking forward to the future everyone has compared themselves to another person at one point or another i mean look at tom brady even if it's not tom brady there's probably someone who you have compared yourself to saying i wish that i was them i do the same thing mostly comparing myself to my peers i won't ever be as athletic or as funny or popular or well liked as some of you but the fact is that i and each one of you have something unique whether that's a talent a part of your personality or an idea that we carry with us that no one else has and each one of you can use that unique thing to be successful in life how you use your talents and abilities to benefit your future is up to each one of you to decide but never forget that every one of you is unique in some way never forget that success isn't always monetary in nature and never forget that even if you don't go on to cure cancer you will be valuable to society in some way even if it's just making someone's day by smiling at them as you walk down the street i look forward to seeing what each one of you will do in 20 years look it's likely i won't even know what you're up to then but if i see your name in the news i can say hey i was trapped in a church with him or her during a fire drill good luck to the class of 22 and thank you for all the experiences and memories you've given me hello my name is garrett mccoskey and similarly to aaron i was also not elected um class president but i was elected class musician which i think gives me merit to speak today i must begin by thanking the entire administration faculty and staff for getting us the class of 2022 to where we are today and to my fellow graduates make space to be here now in the moment look to the person to your left and to your right in front and behind you hi mr kiernan we get this exact moment once be here be now with these people despite the cliche the word bittersweet with its inherent juxtaposition is the only word i can muster to accurately describe my emotions right now if you had asked me four months ago i could not have been more eager to graduate and move beyond this chapter in my life solely emphasizing a sweet feeling but now that i've approached these doors of graduation their handles anxiously awaiting our push forth i must acknowledge a bitter part and admit to being hesitant of this inevitable departure i predict whether we realize it or not that the tentative loosening of many of the relationships that have been a daily constant for the last four years is a primary reason behind these emotions while we will also can you still continue to see our closest of friends there are still people we like but would not necessarily hang out with outside of school those close acquaintances who float just beneath the realm of friendship the ones who spontaneously share a slice with that pizza shop run into on the bike trail and continue your walk with or my personal favorite vibe with on the dance floor at prom these are the relationships that i will miss most their comfortable familiarity slipping away with this momentous occasion with this impending loss in mind i encourage all of you actively reach out to those people who you may not have normally gone out of your way to speak to whether it's later today or in the future while moving on to a new chapter is important keeping in your heart those who have shaped you into the person you are today is equally vital staying connected with those who have made positive impacts in your life no matter how large or small is an incredible way to maintain the sweet rather than the bitter in the passing of these good memories this occasion is undoubtedly filled with sweetness i mean sleeping in all next week the piece of paper we receive the fire engine red drip we're all wearing but the deeper sweet beyond the surface is the invaluable part the relationships that we will truly remember for the rest of our lives to be frank among this group of about 200 students it's some of the most incredible athletes talented musicians brilliant scholars kind of souls almost most importantly and overall inspirational humans i may possibly ever get the privilege to know in my life and i believe we can all faithfully agree to that staying connected to these people who have made positive impacts in your life maintains the sweet the important suite in the passing of good memories faculty staff administration families whom i must admit i did not tell i was speaking today and most importantly my classmates from the bottom of my heart thank you all so incredibly much for the last four years and to each and every one of you congratulations we did it we have another round of applause for our student speakers [Applause] really impressive oh good evening and welcome welcome to families and friends faculty and staff school committee members and most importantly the class of 2022.

to the colin lynch activity center for an in-person commencement ceremony for the first time since 2019 our first dare i say it normal graduation since the start of the covet 19 pandemic before i address the class of 2022 for the final time i want to acknowledge and thank several individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make events like today's possible first to dr gifford the central office leadership team and our school committee thank you while today may feel normal these past three years have been anything but and your flexibility and leadership have been appreciated at the center of our decision-making and ensuring that this class had a quality experience despite the ever-changing mandates and protocols brought on by the covert 19 [Applause] pandemic to our faculty teachers counselors social workers and support staff many of whom are here today thank you for all that you have done for our students on a daily basis but most of all thank you for the compassion kindness and empathy you have shown our students because at the end of the day modeling these skills will be as if not more important to our graduate success than any content they may remember [Applause] to the parents guardians family and friends of the class of 2022 my heartfelt thanks to you as well the success of any school is determined in large part by the quality of the partnership that exists between school and families and that it's charged with serving i hope that we have served you well and appreciate your partnership throughout the past four years to our faculty additionally i'd like to thank our secretarial staff particularly mrs english without their support today's ceremony simply would not be possible [Applause] finally and most importantly today you the class of 2022 congratulations today is your day [Applause] high school graduation is a rite of passage celebrated in communities all across america each june at every graduation speakers remark about this year's class being special for one reason or another but today we truly do gather to celebrate a historic class as today's ceremony mocks dartmouth high school's sesquicentennial that is the 150th graduating class [Applause] 150 years of graduating classes it's a long long time and despite the rumors school committee chairman mr nunes wants everyone to know no he has not been around for all 150 of them all joking aside to put into perspective how long dartmouth high school uh has been turning out graduates and how far we've come since then consider that in 1872 the civil war had only ended a few years prior ulysses s grant would be re-elected president of the united states for his second term susan b anthony would be charged and fined for illegally voting in the presidential election through reconstruction two world wars depression recession and a couple of pandemics dartmouth high school has continued to produce outstanding graduates prepared for success no matter what the world might throw at them today class of 2022 you become part of that tradition of excellence associated with being a dartmouth high graduate i i encourage each of you to embrace that tradition understanding that by doing so you belong to something bigger than yourself you are and always will be a member of the dartmouth high community in embracing this membership as a graduate of dartmouth high school i encourage you to not to work to maintain the status quo by looking at the present or future with contempt and cynicism instead work tirelessly to leave everything you touch just a bit better than it was when you found it this challenge will no doubt be daunting at times but if you embrace a mindset defined by hope optimism and faith in what could be i have no doubt you'll successfully meet the challenge congratulations class of 2022 [Applause] and now is my distinct pleasure to introduce a truly exceptional student leader and one who will be widely missed at dartmouth high school class of 2022 president mr charlie fairfax [Applause] thank you mr tebow hello and good afternoon everyone my name is charlie fairfax it is an honor for me to be speaking in front of you all today i'd like to start by recognizing all of the faculty and staff as well as some of our school leaders mr tebow ms chavier messers shea and martin mrs da silva miss english and mr christopholi especially with a pandemic in mind we thank you for your hard work creativity and frankly courage from enhanced cleaning bagged lunches and hybrid school to band practice with virtual competitions and even sports when many others had none you all went above and beyond on our behalf i would also like to acknowledge our class advisors miss lassie and mr lima and our class officers kat molly and emma i can't thank you all enough for your commitment and enthusiasm you have brought to our grade over the last four years miss lassie we didn't really know you when we came in as freshmen but boy do we know you now the energy and motivation you bring to our school as a teacher a coach as our class advisor is truly awesome and mr lima open to all of our ideas and smart enough to get out of miss lassie's way i know you joke a lot about your age but your ability to live in and make the most of the moment has been a great example for all of us and and it will always keep you young you and miss lassie clearly love and work hard at what you do potent and positive role models for us all lastly i would like to thank our friends and family members whether they they are here today in person zooming in online or here in spirit we are very grateful for all your support i asked all of my classmates to recall what it felt like to be stuck at home during remote learning and i want you all to remember what it felt like how great it was when we got back to school who knew who knew how much we actually liked and missed being in school what a revelation dartmouth high school is a really decent place with lots of people doing good good for themselves good for our town and community and most of all good for us it's students and believe it or not we're gonna miss this place i'm going to leave you all with a poem by tony hoglund mr lima this one's for you we gaze into the night as if remembering the bright unbroken planet we once came from to which we will never be permitted to return we are amazed how hurt we are we would give anything for what we have class of 2022 carve a dm i wish us all the best of luck success and good health thank you well said charlie at this time it's my pleasure to invite miss katherine quinn valedictorian for the dartmouth high school class of 2022 to address us thank you mr tebow thank you superintendent gifford school committee members administration teachers guidance and the entire dartmouth high school staff and to my fellow classmates in the dartmouth high school class of 2022 congratulations to all our families thank you we are here because of you i am proud to stand with your sons and daughters today i am humbled and honored to be recognized as your valedictorian this moment is only possible through the dedicated teachers throughout my educational journey coaches teammates and friends i also share this gratefully with my guidance counselor miss heath whose kindness and genuine interest in my success and happiness provided me with invaluable strength i'm so grateful to my entire family mom and dad thank you for the gifts of my faith and four brothers tom peter patrick and matthew you've guided me each day with love and the steadfast hope that all is well and will be well but this moment is about all of us and our collective achievement during a period of time for our entire world that was challenging beyond measure it was our impressive perseverance patience courage and determination in the face of adversity that kept us moving dr martin luther king jr a leader of change in the face of such adversity during a historic time for our nation said it best if you can't fly then run if you can't run then walk if you can't walk then crawl but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward it was our support of each other that has made all the difference the gift of empathy for what another person may be experiencing is powerful and strengthens one's spirit henry david thoreau said could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other's eyes for an instant because of many of you in this room i was blessed to witness moments of empathy kindness and greatness it was carrying an injured player off a field after a devastating injury and a final senior game it was the basketball team bringing a game to a halt to ensure that players from the opposite team had an opportunity to make a basket they passed the ball to the other player players versus each other and we watched with tremendous pride it was my first experience performing in the spring musical shrek i watched an assembly of acceptance and support for me and everyone of all interests and talents it is our unified program the essence of its very name and an experience that reflects friendship kindness and a spirit of inclusivity that centers around all athletic activities it is a student clearly rushing so that he wouldn't be late for his first class deliberately stopping turning around and running back to open a door for a peer with their arms full it is a classmate just simply stopping to say how are you to a friend or acquaintance who appeared to have something on their mind i am confident you have your own experiences to reflect on as well these are the moments along the way that have carried me you and will carry us all forward one of my favorite religious leaders mother teresa said be the living expression of god's kindness kindness in your eyes kindness in your face kindness in your smile kindness in your warm greetings i believe that the way in which an act of kindness is done is as important as the action itself we have earned the success we are all feeling today and success comes in many forms success is about the impact you might have on someone else it's those small acts of kindness that i've witnessed in my own journey in the hallways of our high school or athletic fields these four years have defined us i am now prepared and excited to set on a new path to the college of the holy cross i challenge you to choose your own path keep moving forward no matter the challenges you face and discover your own moments of kindness and empathy remember the strength and commitment that carried you through your high school years i wish each of you happiness and success in whatever way you may define it enjoy this moment thank you very much for letting me share it with you in such a meaningful way best of luck to each of you god bless and congratulations once again [Applause] thank you catherine at this time it is my pleasure to introduce the class of 2022 vice president catherine cheria [Applause] hello everyone my name is catherine sherrier and i'm the vice president of the senior class i'm very lucky i get to introduce the keynote speaker today and i'm even more lucky that it's miss lassie i will try my best to explain how incredible she is she has helped our class through hard times being open arm to any student throughout the pandemic and the academic school years as well as smiling with us through the good times such as winning the high school's annual pep rally three times in a row i would like to bring into light how much effort miss lassie puts into everything she does miss lassie dedicates hours after school designing and constructing bulletin boards for spirit week going to michael's to get art supplies selling fundraiser raffle tickets to strangers driving around placing flamingos on people's lawns cheering on 5k runners making staff t-shirts for our spike ball tournament and doing everything to make our special or our prom special including finding venues hand making film reels and table decor taking the time to sort through a thousand photos to personalize each student's experience and being the leading force behind every detail so many of your actions are not publicized but please know they don't go unnoticed i'd like to say this on behalf of all the students in this class and myself we're so grateful for everything you've done you taught us how to be kind how to take each day and make it into our own how to laugh at ourselves and how to find and showcase what makes each of us unique in miss lassie's room there are elephants everywhere you look elephants are known to always travel in packs and remember their family throughout these four years miss lassie has led our herd to grow together she's created a safe home for our huge family to come back to please help me welcome the woman who has changed my life and impacted so many miss lassie from the bottom of my heart thank you all right well i wasn't mentally prepared for that thank you so much for that introduction cat don't we all just wish we could be catherine cherry or when we grow up i'd like to thank all of you for the honor of letting me speak today there's so much we've been through together your awkward freshman year a pandemic the flamingo fundraiser of 2021 acceptances rejections wins and losses but what i want to talk to you about is something that i wish i had taken into more consideration at my high school graduation today there will be many wonderful people in your life telling you that they are so proud of you as they should be 12 years of education and all the learning and growing that comes with those 12 years is a huge accomplishment but i want you to try and stop and think about what in these last 12 years has made you proud if you're anything like me this question makes you very uncomfortable we can praise those around us much more easily than we can compliment ourselves our society tends to make us think that we can't be proud of our own accomplishments we should be humble and grateful well i think that you can do both for many of you there'll be things on your list like grades or sports but there are some of you sitting in these chairs today that perhaps didn't shine in those two areas maybe your journey today was not as smooth as those sitting around you all of your paths to get here today are equally important perhaps you struggled with your mental and emotional health along the way maybe you were met with a tragedy that changed you maybe it took you until senior year to finally be confident enough to be your true self maybe you came out while you were here maybe you got here by scratching and clawing through things that the rest of us could not imagine all of you have reasons to be proud today and everyone's reasons are going to be different that's what makes today so beautiful we're not just celebrating the end result we're celebrating all the bumps and the breaks in the road that led you here be proud of those struggles some of you might be sitting here thinking that these are flaws it's all about perspective and i beg you to start shifting your perspective now you are not flawed you're layered you're not broken you're picking up the pieces and reassembling none of your journeys need to be the same each journey is exactly what it's supposed to be the good the bad and the ugly it has made you you and you are enough more than enough so today surround yourself with people that truly see you for all the parts of you and be proud of yourself for all those reasons as well i will leave you with this it has taken me 37 years to get to the point where i truly believe i am enough that i am worthy don't wait as long as i did start falling in love with yourself today if you haven't already see yourself for all that you are and be proud i am enough you are all enough thank you and congratulations my seniors may health and happiness follow you always [Applause] oh i'm just thankful i don't have to follow that miss lassie fantastic job um before i do introduce our next speaker i wanted to just take a second um when i listed our retirees i neglected and shame on me um i want to thank mrs rose acosta who is also retiring this year mrs costa has been a phenomenal member of our faculty for a number of years i also want to take a quick second to just thank our partners at dc tv as well as students from our dartmouth high school tv media production program they're here filming and um they make the live stream possible so that members of our community who could not be here today can tune in so thank you to dctv and to mr peratti and his uh crew for for all that they do now at this time it's my pleasure to introduce superintendent of schools dr bonnie gifford [Applause] you mr tebow mr tebow dartmouth high school faculty and staff family and friends school committee special guests and of course the class of 2022 today we are gathered together to celebrate the accomplishment of our graduates and affirm the successful completion of their k through 12 education graduates i know you are hearing folks telling you about pursuing your dream striving for excellence and much more so i will not add to this advice rather i'll comment on what i found something on the internet the other day on the secret of happiness as it often happens i come across a quote or a story that catches my attention and speaks to me about the really important things in life just the other day this one popped up and i wanted to share it today so why do dogs live less than people here's the answer being a vet i was called to examine a 13 year old irish dog named belker the dog's family ron his wife lisa and their little six-year-old shane were close to belker and expected a miracle i tested the dog and found he was dying of cancer i told the family i couldn't do anything and offered to do the euthanasia procedure at their home the next day i felt the familiar feeling in my throat when belker was surrounded by family shane seemed so quiet petting the dog for the last time and i was wondering if he would understand what was happening in a few minutes the animal fell peacefully sleeping to never wake up the child seemed to accept belker's transition without difficulty we sat for a moment wondering why the unfortunate fact that dog life is shorter than human beings shane who had been listening closely said i know why what he said next surprised me i had never heard a more heartwarming explanation than this and the moment changed my way of seeing life he said people come into the world to learn to live a good life like loving others all the time and being a good person well as dogs are already born knowing how to do all this they don't have to stay as long as we do the moral of the story is if a dog was his teacher he'd learn things like when your loved ones come home always run to say hello never pass up an opportunity to go for a walk allow yourself the experience of fresh air and wind run jump and play daily upgrade your attention and let people touch you avoid biting when just a growl would suffice on warm days lay on the grass and when you're happy dance around and wag your entire body and never forget when someone has had a bad day stay silent sit close and gently make them feel like you're there this is the secret of happiness that even if we don't realize dogs teach us daily class of 2022 congratulations i wish you health much success and most of all happiness [Applause] and now mr tebow chairman nunes school committee parents families and of course the dartmouth public school staff by the authority vested in me as the superintendent of the dartmouth public school district i certified that these candidates for graduation have fully satisfied the requirements prescribed by the massachusetts department of education the dartmouth school committee and the dartmouth high school faculty [Applause] thank you dr gifford at this time it's my pleasure to introduce chairman of the dartmouth school committee mr john nunes [Applause] thank you mr tebow colleagues parents guests and to the class of 2022.

has so long been written i leave you with one last message when i was eight years old my grandparents took me to see the broadway musical wicked and i absolutely loved the soundtrack one song in particular was sung just as beautiful as you would expect it to be and in the opening words it says i've heard it said that people come into our lives for a reason bringing something we must learn and we are led to those who help us most to grow if we let them and if we help them in return well i don't know if i believe that's true but i know i'm who i am today because i knew you all of our personalities our morals and values are defined by those we surround ourselves by throughout our lives we take a piece of each person we interact with and they contribute to the person we know ourselves to be the people i have met in this town over the past 18 years have all shaped me to be the woman i am today as we start the next chapter of our lives and for many of us leave this town continue to improve the lives of others and let them take the best pieces of you along with them to share with the world i now ask the class of 2022 to please rise for the turning of the tassels please move your tassel from right to left [Applause] my i now present to you the class of 2022 [Applause] [Music] so [Music] is [Music] you

would like to provide a summary of what is transpired and what the board is being asked to vote on tonight for the benefit of our community members in november of 2021 15 parents challenged district 99 about the inclusion of the book genderqueer by me in our school libraries the initial concerned parents met with the school principals and librarians on november 23rd 2021 after listening to the objections as well as why the title was selected to be included in our collection the principles determined that the book does does appeal to an audience within the schools and the principles determined that the book i'm sorry and that it should remain in our collection the principles also shared that students have the choice to check this book out or not those who do and find it distasteful can return it and hopefully select another book to read the objection process continued in february of 2022 a curriculum reconsideration committee was formed also known as an ad hoc committee it included volunteer representative parent leaders from booster and parent organizations they had not previously weighed in on this resource the committee's charge was to review the book and to make a written recommendation to me the superintendent at the committee's one meeting that was held on march 16 2022 the concerned parents and district librarians presented to the committee separately the committee deliberated and recommended not removing the book from the collection their recommendation is a public doc document and is included online in tonight's board materials the decision of the committee aligns with my recommendation to the board which can be found in full with tonight's board materials i believe genderqueer belongs in our libraries i strongly agree with the key tenets of the committee's recommendation district their their tenants are as follows district 99 libraries should continue to be safe spaces for students to develop and champion beliefs of all individuals and to elevate students and readers of all levels through text or graphic novels alike students and or parents may opt out of individual titles at district 99 libraries at any time just by contacting the librarians the intent of the book is not to cause sexual excitement nor does the book include any child pornography or pornography of any kind this material does not meet the criteria of pornography as the images are not presented with the intent to show a sexual act to encourage a sexual act or to be lewd but instead they illustrate one moment in the author's sometimes difficult personal journey the book meets the educational and social emotional benefits connected to the collection development guidelines the equity vision of district 99 and the district 99 statement of values and their overarching themes of belonging and empathy just as the ad hoc committee recommends i also recommend that the board take no removal action of gender genderqueer from the district 99 libraries tonight under action per administrative regulation 6.260 a r1 the board may choose to do one of three things one accept the committee's report two reject the report or three modify the educational use of the challenge material if the decision of the board is to remove or limit the use of the materials in question it shall not be construed as criticism of the faculty involved in the original selection or use of the material if the material remains in the collection it can be a challenge again however it's one year following board action would be the earliest however once again my recommendation is to accept the recommendation of the ad hoc committee and to take no removal action of genderqueer from the district 99 libraries and that's what appears as the action item for this evening i'll now take any questions from the board after which there'll be a 30 minute up to a 30 minute perception of visitors then the agenda calls for board action following the reception of visitors and after that that is our only item adjournment take any questions from board members not so much a question is i please just because a lot of people i think have a lot of the letters that have come in have misrepresented something that i just so people are clear about the selection criteria for the committee oh of the ad hoc committee yeah sure so uh the the administrative regulation that we follow provides no or in the past providing no guidance for how we select that committee most of the time this these kinds of matters are resolved before we reach that that point the administrative regulation i'm following was originally written in 1975 and was all in reviewed again in 2015 before i was superintendent before this matter came forward so together with the principles we had to try to figure out a fair way to form this ad hoc committee so what we did was we reached out to parent leaders in our parents and booster organizations that was about 30 parents that are actively involved in athletic boosters fine art boosters parent clubs and the like those 30 parents all receive that and none of them could have reached out to me on this matter before this right one way or the other right um so i emailed those 30 parent leaders and said that we have we have a request to form this committee to review this resource uh i don't believe i named what the resource was i just said that we have a challenge the actual letter that went to those parents is available in the materials that are online from those 30 parent leaders seven volunteered to participate in part of the process and all seven participated i had no idea what organizations they were involved in i had no idea you know how they were going to rule on this it's just we believe as an administration that these are parents that are actively already actively involved in organizations in our schools are already giving of their time for the betterment of our students and our in many of them are in positions that are either selected elected by other parents so we felt that that was a good group of parents to reach out to and ask if they'd be willing to give up their time for an instructional materials challenge thank you any other questions or clarifications no i appreciate the work that's been done to review all this um yeah a lot of notes have come in about dr feely stacking the the committee and he certainly did not so let's be clear about that all right okay should we move on to the reception of visitors all right we have five comment slips um so we'll be able to get to all of them within the 30 minutes that are designated it's the way that reception of visitors works it's a three-minute opportunity to address the board we listen the board and the administration listens there's there's no dialogue back and forth all right so uh and the first person up is bobby arms and that will be followed by i think this is don de clean so bobby hello my name is bobby and i'm just going to start right off and say that i've read the book something that it did do was the book honestly bored me a little bit but something that i did not do was making something that i'm not at no point was there any rhetorical attempt to persuade me to induce these struggles in myself that weren't already there to begin with in other words i felt the very same before and after thank you reading it i also think banning books is something that is universally wrong i think that banning book symbolizes a fear of the ideas that the book represents it also promotes an overcast of ideology conjured by the few and blocking the free thinking skies of the many in other words to ban this book is to say we think the children are too weak to be able to stand steadfast on their own opinions values and identity it's similar to saying the child will buy every product of every advertisement they see just because they like all the jingles and that they lack the ability to decide and act on what they want and don't want i think that students are enough will to decide for themselves how they feel about this book it's a great resource for those who are feeling similarly the author but for those who feel even different about even indifferent about their gender it will not and does not try to influence them in any way if you are for banning this book then i implore you to read it you will see how harmless this memoir really is if you refuse to read it then how can you advocate to ban something you don't fully understand if you find yourself following a shepherd-led bandwagon then please split from the herd and at the very least understand why you feel the way you do and lastly i just want to add that banning the book will only add more interest to it by virtue of it being on a banned book list thank you thank you thank you our next speaker is don de clean followed by eileen breiner good evening my name is don mclean donors will resident for about 28 years and thank you for allowing me to speak the enrollment in public schools is going down a little bit now a lot of that has to do with covid some of it has to do with crt teaching and sex education homeschooling has increased from 5.4 percent in the spring of 2020 to 11.1 percent in the fall of 21.

uh please um you know thanks for sticking through us with one of the most strenuous times in the history of your profession and for ensuring that we made it through the other side intact thank you to our parents and to the assembled families of the class of 2022 thank you for being here and for assembling or for raising us to absolutely crush our high school experiences to my class thank you for the memories and for the trust you placed in the officers and myself for these past four years we're done guys it's time i know right it's time to leave this place and to go out and do all the things we talked about never before has the far future been so frighteningly immediate but today is a day of farewell a farewell to this building we find ourselves in a farewell to the people seated next to you and a farewell to the life we've all lived for the past four years i don't come to you with any special knowledge of the upcoming years obviously but i come with special knowledge of the people that i'm graduating with today we will not settle nor will we aspire to mediocrity with that i'd like to introduce the superintendent of berlin boylston public school regional public school district mr jeffrey zhang [Applause] how'd you use this thank you glad we could be here today to celebrate this graduation indoors it's been way too long what about that national anthem if i had here i would have been standing on edge that was incredible you can heckle if you want to day two i was a couple months ago i was reading this leadership article and it started off with this story about research that was done by an american biologist named robert zapalski you're not going to be quizzed on it i say it from this aquarius benefit so she has something to do when she goes home to look someone up although she probably knows him but he was researching zebras and zebras are camouflaged but they're not camouflaged like a lion lion's a camouflage against the background zebra camouflaged the black and white stripe as you've all learned and so they're not camouflaged against their own background but they're camouflaged against other zebras and so when they're standing against the herd it makes it difficult for them to be identified it also makes it difficult for alliance to hunt them because of that so the biologists were doing these observations in the wild on these zebras so they do an observation they look down they look back up it's like okay what group of stripes are we just looking at so we got to do something about this so they go and get some red paint they get one of these zebras they put a little red paint on the back legs and so now they can do the observations onto z because they can identify what zebra they were looking at the unintended consequence was the lions could identify that zebra two and they attack them and eat them right there so other than starting off with a nice animal story there was a point to the leadership article and it's that to be a leader you have to stand out from the crowd but when you do that you take the chance of being criticized and attacked and that zebra story has some parallels in real life in fact there's an expression for it it's called the tall poppy syndrome it comes from the saying that the poppy that grows the tallest gets cut first and it turns out no matter where you go around the world no matter what culture you you engage in they all have a saying like that some of them you've heard some of you haven't don't make waves fly under the radar the treaty grows the tallest gets the most wind and i think my favorite i think it's from the japanese culture the nail that sticks up gets hammered down and i wondered why is it that every single kid right around the world hear these stories growing up from people who care about them and i believe it's just that they care about you they don't want to see you get hurt and there's some wisdom in learning from things that have been tried and true and there's some comfort and being around people that think like us this is especially when you get old and you may have a career or you have a family that you have to support but that's just the point you're not old but you're not old you don't have a career you don't have a family to support you don't need the safety of a crowd you don't have to be part of a crowd because the real danger with being part of a crowd isn't that if you leave the safety of that crowd you get criticized and attacked the real problem with being part of a crowd is that you never get to shine you never get to do anything great because you always end up someplace in the middle the median and that word median is related to the word mediocre you've heard the expression maybe death by mediocre it's a long unattractive and painful way to go in fact if you're someone who follows the crowd and you decide and you have the right genetics you could have 75 80 more years of a completely mediocre life think about that what a shame that would be you were all born unique but you spend so much time following the crowd that you end up dying looking just like them and acting just like them and that's no that's no life for you there's a branch of social psychology that studies crowd behavior and they find that there's a correlation between crowd behavior and individual responsibility it's a simple correlation but it's well worth knowing people who are likely or more apt to take responsibility for their actions are much less likely to follow the crowd it's a good place to start the next party of your life you want to have a meaningful and unique life take responsibility for your actions and don't blame other people for your problems and that article i was telling you about it's not really as much about running an organization or a company as much as it's about taking control of your life so take responsibility with the words you speak because if you don't the crowd will put words in your mouth and take responsibility for those priorities you set in life because if you don't the crowd will set your priorities for you and most of all take responsibility for the the friends you choose and who you decide in this life you're going to praise and who you're going to criticize because if you don't do that the crowd will do that for you too see today is a good day for you you're graduating so tomorrow for this group it really is a new day today you can put aside your excuses today you can take responsibility for your actions and the day you can start building that life that you want for yourself in the future i'm going to leave you with one thought here's the only thing you're going to be guaranteed in life no matter what choices you make somebody will make sure that the outcomes of those choices somehow will become your responsibility whether you like it or not so choose wisely class of 2022.

hi everyone please rise i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you trem a quick note about the restructure of tonight's evening of the event tonight we traditionally have done something where we used to do a undergraduate award during the school day we did a senior awards in athletic awards and given the number of nights out and all the things that are involved with making that happen the difficult things that we all have in our lives these days we decided to take a look and say our students are pretty awesome at a lot of different things so the celebration of excellence they're giving the thumbs up is what we came up with tonight we realized that some of our undergraduates some of our students are going to receive some of the book awards tonight uh typically weren't recognized as a whole group in front of uh the students that really cared about what they did so that's why we invited them here tonight senior rewards athletics it was important to incorporate that as well and then we're going to give away some money today so let's talk about the money it's pretty important between academic and athletic scholarships we'll give away close to 80 000 tonight [Applause] [Music] i think more impressive and this is really for the juniors um they could potentially walk away if some of our juniors choose to go to the universities they get their awards for they could walk away with close to 154 which makes a total potential with guaranteed almost 229 178 dollars that students could get let's talk a little bit about the process how this is going to work we have a set up we're going to start with undergraduates and i'll see if i can advance this slide here we'll start with undergraduates then we'll move to athletic awards then senior awards and scholarships we'll move to department scholars salutary valedictorian and closing remarks which i promised to be relatively quick so let's jump right to the class of 2023 book awards medals and scholarships this is for juniors so the way this is going to work is you're going to come up when you hear your name come up to the left side of the stage you're going to walk across have your moment in front to see your picture pretty awesome gianna you're coming up not yet though you're not 20 23.

it's more than double at the church we attend the uh there's a christian school attached we've seen the 25 increase in enrollment last fall not sure what's going to happen this fall might be even greater um yeah i don't think there's much argument that genderqueer is going to be in the libraries of these two high schools my only suggestion is that also in addition to that book maybe you would consider installing or presenting a book called a child is born it continues to break astonishing new ground and bringing to life the miracle of conception pregnancy and birth and deep inside a woman's body a miracle occurs a woman's egg and sperm from a man meet and a new human being is created through unique photographs the author leonard nielsen we see the fascinating process of fertilization unfold and watch as an embryo develops from a tiny cluster of cells into a fetus maturing day by day until the time comes for a newborn to meet the world outside the womb i don't know um it just seems like it would and if the board has no money and cannot afford to put in these two books they're around 50 bucks a copy i'll donate them so i don't know how to go about applying to do that is this the proper event you'd like to reach out to me afterwards we can okay we can talk about it thank you thank you next up is eileen breiner followed by stephen magnussen good evening eileen breiner downers grove we hear a lot about diversity and inclusion in tonight's discussion i want to show how hypocritical this board is when it comes to diversity of thought and inclusion of a variety of ideas in january i came to the board meeting and requested that pro-life books be added to the library i had a list of suggested titles on follow-up with the board i was told no there would be no pro-life books added and this discussion was over well so much for diversity of thought books that align with your ideas are fine but books that are with a different viewpoint are excluded you're not educating here you're indoctrinating i hope this discussion will lead to more ideas being presented to students not less please stop the indoctrination [Applause] stephen magnuson followed by barb allen uh hello i i personally am a uh i go by gender fluid that's the gender eyes i uh work with um and personally i've struggled a lot with that and my mental health over a long period of time um having a book like genderqueer would have been really nice for me when i was actually going here still uh might have actually helped me to quit sooner come to terms with who i am as a person and help a lot with my personal mental health struggles and my uh issues with like suicide and i think it's very important that people should have the opportunity to learn more about who they are and they should also be able to learn more about people around them especially as more people are understanding what they are i don't think you should be stopping them from learning what they are because all that does is make them hurt um removing this book wouldn't be about stopping indoctrination it's not it's not considered indoctrination when you tell kids that oh a man and a woman should be together or oh this person is a man but it is indoctrination for some reason when you say oh a man and a man can be together or oh this person is non-binary like i don't i personally i just don't understand the like thought process behind that uh it's always kind of eluded me but the idea of removing a book about finding out who you are and going on a journey is like backwards and frankly i personally think you should be teaching more of these as part of like the english curriculum um like we see a lot about like shakespeare and stuff like that which is very important in its own right but it doesn't relate as much to people in the modern era it has a very important literary significance but we don't talk about like modern struggles as much at least we did when i was here a couple years ago um i think it would be frankly good if it was actually taught as part of the curriculum that's it for me all right our final speaker is barb allen okay hi my name is barb ellen i'm a downers curve resident and concerned parent i became aware of the book genderqueer from the news as well as when my district 99 student texted me a picture of a page from genderqueer that depicts a person performing oral sex to another person's strap-on penis this picture was sent to my teenager by another district 99 student who noted it was from the school library my husband and i talked with our teenager about the picture and the book my teenager was appalled by the book and shocked that it is in the school library by providing gender queer in the district 99 libraries district 99 is in fact promoting oral sex sexual exploration and sexual promiscuity make no mistake this is not about inclusivity this is not about giving students safe spaces no sexually explicit material should be provided by our schools regardless of sexual orientation period i question how genderqueer met the criteria to be included in district 99 libraries every one of the eight bullet points in the criteria particularly the relevance to district 99 curriculum are arguable please tell me how giving a blow job to a strap-on penis fingering yourself or after fingering then licking vagina slime off your finger is relevant to the district 99 curriculum just because a book is in print does not mean it is good good or relevant there is a lot of good in our society but also a lot of trash and it is the duty and responsibility of district 99 to ensure the content provided at our school is appropriated most students have sexually have access to sexually explicit materials outside of school this does not validate providing sexually explicit content in school as well providing sexually explicit materials to our students is inappropriate at best and genderqueer has in fact been ruled obscene in a port of law on may 18 2022 the virginia beach circuit court ruled the book genderqueer is and i quote obscene to unrestricted viewers by minors viewing by minors if district 99 votes to keep gender queer in the library i would expect lawsuits to be coming your way as well thank you [Applause] just to clarify board members as you're aware we did receive from mrs breiner suggestions of books that should be in the library the librarians did respond to mrs breiner several times and i believe one of her recommendations is actually been purchased and is in the library so i want to just be clear that how it was represented this evening was not factual so moving on i have nothing else to comment on this matter with the board okay thank you all uh so we'll move on to our only action item for the night we have a requesting a motion for the board of education to accept the recommendation of the ad hoc curriculum objection committee and the superintendent and take no removal action on the book genderqueer so i think it was no no chris oh with chris and joanne excuse me thank you very much christopher espinoza aye joanna vazquez drexler aye mike dan report aye shirelle fuller aye jenny hagstrom aye troy pavich aye nancy kupko aye the motion is carried the book remains [Applause] thank you all you

thank you all for coming today to celebrate these past 13 years with us the last time i was at a graduation ceremony was june 8th 2014 to celebrate my cousin dylan this would also be the last time my family was complete two days later my grandparents tragically passed away today there are two seats in the audience that should be filled by my wonderful grandparents melantarian my grammy and grampy even though they cannot be here today i know they are watching me from heaven and beyond proud even though their passing was very detrimental and heartbreaking they taught me lessons that i'll forever cherish my grandparents were not only the best grandparents and parents that you could ask for but they were also the best people my grammy was the most precious and sweetest soul that i will ever encounter she gave her all to everyone even if she received nothing in return some of my favorite memories with her was when we would visit the nursing home and pray and speak with the residents there it made the residents day and they were always excited to see her and grateful for her visits most of these people were forgotten by their own families but not forgotten by my grammy she always made the people around her feel special she would always play barbies with my sister and i and cook us the most delicious meals my sister and i's favorite chicken nuggets mashed potatoes and broccoli my grampy was the most was very soft-spoken and the most perfect man that you could ever ask for he was wise but he did not have to be the loudest in the room he could enter the room and you would not even notice he was gentle and kind a total hippie from the 60s he was always content with what he had and took life at a slow pace even even his driving which probably never reached more than 40 miles an hour he was appreciative of what he had and who he had my grammy taught me to do good in this world even if the world and the people in it do not treat you the same way your good changes lives even if it does not feel like it my grandpa taught me taught me that you do not have to be the loudest to be the wisest you not have to have a fancy house and lots of money to live a happy and peaceful life he taught me to romanticize my life and appreciate the little things like listening to the beatles and playing wiffle ball in the backyard my grandparents have also taught me unconditional love my grandparents were the most in love people that i have ever seen i've never seen a man love someone like my grandpa love my grammy i've never seen a woman care about someone the way my grammy cared about my grampy it was tragic that they passed away at the same time but they would not have wanted it any other way they were soul mates they also showed my mom and aunt titi unconditional love even though they had trouble makers for children my grandparents still loved them no matter what they also showed each of their grandchildren what is like to be loved dylan christian came lily and i will never feel feel loved like the way my grandparents loved us no love will ever compare to that of my grammy and grampies as we all embark on a new journey and begin the start of our individual lives i hope that you choose to live like my grammy and grampy i hope you give your all to this world even if the world does not give its all to you when life gets tough choose to still give your all choose to give rather than receive just like my grammy did i hope that you choose to love the little things about your life like my grampy did appreciate eating cake on your birthday and the tupes in the spring appreciate dancing the hairy styles on vinyl alone in your room in the pink and blue of the sunset do not base your happiness on success or money but rather those little things that bring you joy the most important thing that i want you all to learn from my grammy and grampy is to choose to love love heart and love fiercely love without worrying about whether or not you will receive it back if we choose to love rather than hate our world will be a much better place with all of your adventures and struggles in the future i hope that love is your response i wish you all the love and happiness in your future endeavors be a lover give love choose love love everyone always thank you [Applause] please welcome please welcome the senior class president mr jacob contreras to deliver to deliver his address to the class of good afternoon faculty staff friends family and community members and fellow graduates my name is jacob contreras and i have had the pleasure of representing this year's graduating class as their student body president and before i begin my cliche and cheesy speech i'd like to thank a few people who have helped me get through these past years at gemtown i would first like to thank my mom for how much she supports me in everything that i do and is always there for me when i need her i would also like to thank my dad for how much he supports me and for all the selfies that he takes even when i don't want to next i'd like to thank my friends and classmates for making these past years more enjoyable and memorable and lastly i would like to thank miss bachmann for all the life lessons she has taught me and for being such a great role model in my life and everyone else's lives also thank you miss bachmann for dealing with my breakdowns during march man season and putting up with all my jokes through the years would you join me now for a quick moment of silence for tyler baker brady parsons and anyone else who i would who would have been walking across the stage with us today and may they always be a part of the class of 2022 it is hard to think that just 13 years ago we began our school journey and that we are here today to walk across the stage and become alumni of gemtown high school over the years so many things have taken place and i would like to take some time to reminisce on the memories and accomplishments of the class of 2022.

are special you will soon see as you leave your small towns that the experiences conversations and memories that you have made and had here will amaze some that hear of your stories it is at that time that you will realize what a special place to hondo really was you see the faculty and staff here at toronto are incredible group of dedicated caring and intelligent people behind the scenes these people have given up time with their own families to make to hunt and feel like you're a family for over the past seven years in a time in which educators are put under a microscope oftentimes not valued or respected for their professional knowledge and expected to do more and more with less and less toronto faculty and staff has always put you first because that's what families do going to share with you a poem from an unknown author the poem is called the magic bank account imagine that you've won the following prize in a contest each morning your bank will deposit eighty six thousand four hundred dollars in your private account for personal use however this prize has rules the set of rules is as follows number one everything that you don't spend each day will be taken away from you number two you may not simply transfer money into some other account number three you may only spend it number four each morning upon awakening the bank opens your account with another eighty six thousand four hundred dollars for a new day and number five the bank can end the game without warning at any time it can say game over close your account and you will never receive a new one what would you personally do with your prize you would buy anything and everything you wanted right not only for yourself but also for all the people you love and care for even for people you don't know because you couldn't possibly spend it all yourself you would try to spend every penny and use it all because you knew the money would be replenished in the morning actually this game is real each of us is already a winner of a much more valuable prize we just don't seem to realize it the prize is time you see each morning we awaken and receive eighty six thousand four hundred seconds of a gift of life and we go to sleep at night and any remaining time is not credited to us what we haven't used up that day is forever lost yesterday is forever gone each morning the account is refilled but the bank can dissolve your account at any time without warning so what will you do with your 86 400 seconds tomorrow those seconds are worth much much more than the same amount in dollars think about it and remember to enjoy every second of your life because time raises by so much quicker than you think so take care of yourself be happy love deeply and enjoy life here's wishing you joy and happiness in whatever life may bring to you and please remain forever stag strong thank you [Applause] at this time i'd like to introduce the valedictorian of the class of 2022 jordan money [Applause] the past four years have gone by so fast we sit here as a class teetering between high school and what comes next thinking back on all that we have learned in this building we didn't just learn about math in science history and english but also about ourselves and each other without the show we never would have learned that mri likes to cut a rug every now and then and without jack we never would have learned what not to say over the announcements at school without matt we wouldn't know what maximum effort is without the rubber band we've been missing out on some seriously rocking music without leah we might not know what it is to laugh until we cry each of you has taught each other how to grow into the person you've become today if i learned one thing from this class from the past seven years it is that we are forced to be reckoned with we are funny smart collaborative mischievous and resilient whatever lies ahead of us we have the skills and community to conquer anything our class is loaded with talented and hard-working students and i am honored to have grown with you i would also like to acknowledge our amazing teachers and what we have learned from them we learned that mr pacheco is disorganized and eccentric and yet we may never be lucky enough to have another teacher like him we learned that the mitochondria is the powerhouse to sell through miss sequeira's constant excitement and energy we learned that the best lean cuisine is the swedish meatball from the many lunch study sessions that mr cavino offers we learned that water is never water and about the importance of seeking the spheres to connect ideas from mr daugherty we learned that mr whitehead has the worst interpretations of marvel anything we learned that no matter what we had someone who cared because we knew frannie was in our corner thank you for all your years of hard work and the rock howard foundation that you've given us to build off of sophomore year mr daugherty asked many of us the question where have you come from and where where you come from my dear phaedras and where are you going posed by socrates the resulting essay was a mind probing and yet therapeutic as we drove into our pasts and theorized about our futures i hope you all remember where you came from and what you've learned from this place as you take your first steps toward where you want to go my first steps will be to beg mr picaro once again to drive the golf cart thank you and congratulations to everyone [Applause] at this time i'd like to introduce the salutatorian of the class of 2022 carter nozick [Applause] i stand in front of all of you today as the second place finisher among our class i am beyond grateful for the recognition but that's not what i want to talk about because it feels incomplete rather i want to speak for all the students sitting beside me who don't get the opportunity to make a speech for all those who spent countless hours studying doing homework and creating great things there are so many people in this class who deserve to be right here where i'm standing the fact that i get to speak was an exciting idea but also a bit of a hard one i had to grapple with what gives me the right to speak when there are so many equally if not more deserving for example students like skyler babino and her team of absolutely fantastic people who are working to get personal hygiene products put in all bathrooms throughout the school deserve to be here students like matt muldoon and his rubber band who inspire creativity among our class and do it with such incredible spirit deserve to be here i wish i could say something incredible about every single student in this class and how much they deserve but time to simply not allow so please hear this speech and think not about me but of the class think about how incredible this class is as a whole think about those who aren't speaking to you right now think about those who make more of a difference than anyone but haven't yet been recognized for it every person here has worked themselves tirelessly to end up in this moment and if they aren't recognized for that then something has failed so to everyone here without the opportunity to show how much effort you put in to get here you deserve to be up here as much as anyone and please over the course of your life never let recognition or the lack of it change who you are stay uniquely you stay uniquely kind and stay uniquely balanced thank you i would now like to introduce the student council president paige money [Applause] empathy the word that captures the feelings that allow us to understand each other without physically going through what another person may be going through as a leader empathy is an important skill to have at the beginning of the school year ms duceri has said to focus on being kind because you never know what someone is going through as a student council president along with the rest of the stuco seniors we really had to grab on to that idea leading students from grade 9 through 12 has provided many struggles mainly feeling like we as seniors could never fully connect with everyone due to busy schedules and quick lunch meetings they got to know us yes but we really never got to know all of them i'd like to take this moment to thank our fearless leader for the past seven years mr sarri the student council senior struggling connect to connect with 24 other student council members from grade 9 through 12 is nothing to compare to how you have been able to connect with every student at this school whether through initial intimidation as a sixth grader that turned into unquestionable respect as a senior you have been able to connect and impact every one of our lives being able to successfully lead a school isn't always about just being in charge of the school it's about taking care of those in your charge those who work here those who volunteer those who attend all those people contribute to the success of the school mr sarri has given our class seven years of impactful leadership a feat that could not have been easy we have given her great headaches with some questionable announcements transition time rowdiness and loads of sass throughout our years at tahunto but that has never once led her to give up on us being a leader comes with great personal sacrifice and i cannot imagine the grief you got from our class alone but i commend you for it and thank you for your years at tahunto our class has had many great leaders in our lives who led us to where we are today they got to know us were kind to us made us feel seen or heard those people pushed us to be our true self and we wouldn't be us without them we've also had each other leaders in the classroom pushing each other to excel academically leaders on the field pushing each other to run that last lap or leaders in life people you look to and admire for their resilience anyone has the capability needs to be a leader at this moment in time the world needs a new kind of leadership leaders like mr series stepping down we need strong individuals like her in this to be ethical and guide others to achieve change not for themselves but for the benefit of others we will not change the world as individuals but as a group i know we will congrats to us thank you [Applause] i would now like to introduce mr peter doherty for the faculty address [Applause] oat is most sweet when in one line two crafts directly meet it's game seven don't complain compete so when jordan asked me to do this i heard a voice in my head screaming oh dear lord please just say no don't not only are you terrified of speaking in public you know you're going to stress over this for weeks and then wait until the night before to finally put something down on paper it doesn't matter that jordan class of 2022 are among your favorites of all time plus diane is going to give you that infamous death glare if you speak for more than 30 seconds i mean i usually go like 30 minutes and you know it's that's impossible just pretend you have something to do that day and take nancy reagan's advice and just say no instead what i heard coming out of my mouth was wow thank you i'd love to i'm honored of course i'm only kidding about the first part of me and the diane thing that is absolutely legit she literally said darden graduation speech truthfully i am honored i'm honored and grateful to you the class of 2022 and to my long run this is going to be tough and to my long time colleague mentor and friend diane tuseri for the opportunity to speak to today oh it is most sweet when in one line two crafts directly meet it's game seven don't complain compete my first introduction to you guys the class of 2022 happened when they were freshmen i typically don't pay much attention to freshmen because well they're freshmen and plus mr whitehead really seems to joy teaching them so there's just no need with this class i had no choice i was at my desk doing some work and then from across the hall i heard something like this patrick patrick patrick stop it say patrick every day and i wonder who is this patrick and what on earth is he doing but i never saw him get kicked out of class he's annoying enough to get yelled at constantly but not doing quite enough to get kicked out must be an interesting kid interesting that's hilarious and that was it for you know for the majority of the year except for occasionally overhearing a few tall goofy looking kids on the way into mr whitehead's room arguing about marvel or totally geeking out about some advanced computer mathy stuff that is way beyond my comprehension and i thought all right there's some potential there and then on their first day of sophomores i was going through the roster in period four i thought i was being clever when i remarked hey there's a luke andale in the same class and that's when leah assaulted me with an audible eye roll in growl g we've never heard that before and i was like all right i haven't even met this kid and she's already sassed me and then i began to drag them through the typical sophomore stuff line up alphabetically by middle name without talking silently stare at them for most of the period to see what they do make them repeat water is never water until they dreamt about it crank through a few short stories over analyze various kinds of fields as well as jeans obsession with finney watch pixar's cars read an uplifting children's story about british kids having all sorts of fun while stranded on an island blah blah blah all the typical sophomore hits and somewhere in there i would occasionally find myself yelling patrick and i would find myself arguing about marvel with those same tall goofy kids and i found myself learning more about pokemon than i ever thought possible and then i would find myself making sure jackson and fletcher and cayden were awake all very typical sophomore stuff and then capturing the rye started with our talks about ducks and cab drivers and streets and carousels and then just like countless other years we rolled into march getting ready for mcas and then everything stopped and typical was gone it was unprecedented how many times we heard unprecedented and somewhere in there we zoomed and we tried to carry on sometimes it worked sometimes not so much honestly i don't remember much else from the rest of that year other than asking cody to please stop spinning in his chair and then the year ended and then the next came and went and then the 21-22 school year arrived and i was ready for another year just to pass by but that didn't happen you wouldn't let it from day one in both ap lit in nature of being there was a different vibe about you a vibe i hadn't felt in a while despite the masks and restrictions and the ongoing pandemic oh my god in all its social drama especially directed towards schools despite all that negativity you brought joy with you every day you found ways to laugh ways to celebrate learning in ways to happily push and support each other continuously onward mr pacheco and i would often watch you in class laughing and joking and carrying on and on about who knows what and we think you were blown off your work and when we call you on it you say we're actually done and then you would proceed to blow us away with your presentations you left us wondering how you did all of that brilliant work while simultaneously making it seem like you were you weren't doing anything because of all the laughter and joy and it continued day after day fast forward to may 15 2022 just three weeks ago specifically game seven between the celtics and bucks with 7 40 left in the second quarter after witnessing some of the players upset something didn't go their way espn analyst mark jackson said the following it's game seven don't complain compete as soon as i heard it i knew i wanted to use it my speech first i thought i would use it as some sort of grand advice for the future but after many failed attempts at a speech it finally dawned on me especially after our cape trip that you don't need to hear this advice you don't need to hear from me about the importance of showing up in competing and working hard and pushing collectively forward with joy when things get difficult you don't need to hear that because you have already done it you've been doing it for two years these past two years have been one very long game seven and after the initial shock and maybe a little complaining of our world being turned upside down you put all of that aside and fully embraced and owned your situation you rallied when the pressure became intense and competed hard not against each other in some vain quest for individual glory but for and with each other the most noble aspect of competition pushing and encouraging each other to achieve personal excellence not only in academics but more importantly in your own everyday lives so many throughout the country have found excuses to cave into the pressure of the moment you relished in it and from what i can see i would say you've won so yeah you don't need any advice from me in fact if anyone needs to hear that advice it's probably me and i can't thank you enough for reminding me of this important lesson through everything you have done for each other i am grateful for the short time i spent with coach goulet in the boys soccer team specifically the seniors he reminded me of the passion and sense of family that is formed when teammates work tirelessly to achieve a common goal and have a lot of fun while doing it and i especially love that i got to yell patrick again but this time in celebration when he saved a penalty in a shootout i'm grateful for ap lit in nature being classes as you reminded me of the absolute joy and more often than not the delightful lunacy that a classroom can be when students genuinely care about and take responsibility for each other's learnings your creativity whether gretchen's or sarah's art or nicole's poetry olivia's singing tom's guitar skills matt and jackie's acting in hannah's films jacob and allah's impeccable style or leah and jack and ian's progressively more insane scripts in a quest to outdo each other or carter's molding us like soft clay through his eloquent soliloquies or literally all of your exhibitions specifically alice and paige sauers and luke's which brilliantly explored the power of creativity to help both artists and audience to overcome trauma your creativity without question in a class by itself and even above that is your kindness to not only each other but to me i mean a bunch of you even came all the way to leominster multiple times to watch my daughter's plays and belly even made her cupcakes i mean who does that obviously you do i'm so proud of you and so grateful that i get to watch you absolutely own this game seven oat is most sweet when in one line two crafts directly meet i think it is most fitting and sweet that your class's graduation just happens to be mr series final graduation as principal of tahanto if there is one person in my life who is the living embodiment of don't complain compete it is dying to sari in 2011 just before she officially became our principal to put it mildly things weren't going too smoothly around here i remember talking with her about the job and she really really didn't want it i know i and many others begged her to take the job she did and we are here today because of her i'm not just talking here in the physical sense not just in this beautiful new building which she was instrumental in making a reality but here in a spiritual sense here in a communal sense for so much of what takes makes the hanto to hanto can be directly linked to her look how many tonto graduates we have working here it's incredible they are here because of our culture a culture that she helped create and foster for 33 years she shaped and molded thousands of people students and faculty alike and we are all the better for it i'm so happy for you diane i'm grateful for all the years who work together in various capacities from contract negotiations to coaching to curriculum work i'm grateful for your patience and understanding i'm grateful for your constant willingness to teach i'm grateful for all the laughter and joy and i'm even grateful for the heart attack you almost gave that you and mrs aguero almost gave mr pacheco and me thanks to that horrifying and hilarious practical joke you pulled on us on the very first cape trip don't think i forgot about that and i'm mostly grateful that by your example you have pushed me and so many others to excel now faculty i ask you to join me on a diet coke toast [Applause] toast to mr serry and the class of 2022.

while i might not have started as a jimmy we began our school journey in the fall of 2009 when the black eyed peas hit song boom boom pow and i got a feeling spent 26 consecutive weeks on the music charts fast forward to interme intermediate school and i remember one of the highlights was spending our parents money at the scholastic book fair instead of actually buying books in 2016 team usa brought home 121 olympic medals as they competed in rio brazil as we moved on to junior high while junior high might have been awkward years for a lot of us where we started to grow and change mr stoner made it enjoyable by blaring championed by carrie underwood or sweet caroline every friday to wrap up the week i will also never forget the tour of the state's song thanks a lot mr stoner as we moved on to our new adventure that is high school we were not alone as mr stout loved our class so much that he moved over to the high school with us we started the fall of our freshman year with some big accomplishments for our school with our girls filling in for the seniors during powder puff making it to the championship and then to finish out our fall activities our marching band competed for the very first time in school history at semi state with their show entitled mirrored images finishing up our first year in high school with a bang our softball team brought home a sectional championship title which will always be a great accomplishment in the headlines as we moved into our sophomore year astronomers discover and release a picture of a black hole for the first time and across the sea prince henry and meghan markle have their first baby archie many of us turn 16 which means we start getting our licenses and hearings stay off the roads and for some of my fellow classmates i'm not quite sure how you manage to get your license considering your parking jobs every day but that's besides the point our football team was on fire throughout the season but we happened to come up just a bit short at this sectional championship against marion then came spring and the dreaded word covid our class along with everyone else experienced the pandemic of kovid 19 which led to the shutdown of school sports and practically everything around us it was tough to say goodbye to everyone as our school year was cut short and no one knew what to expect as the pandemic raged on we persevered as we came back the next year despite all the mass and vaccine mandates that seemed to change by the minute but next came the 2020 election which to me sounded like two old men fighting in a retirement home rather than a presidential campaign but one thing i know for sure is i'm a little disappointed kanye west did not succeed with his campaign one of the highlights of the winter sports season was landon buchanan going far in wrestling and representing our class in school well as he traveled down to indianapolis to compete at state finals the softball team was successful once again as we finished our junior year by winning conference i think i can say this on behalf of my classmates but i believe our senioritis kicked in way before actually starting our senior year but that might just be me elon musk company spacex had their first successful splashdown as the first private company to do so while back here on earth our football team won conference along with the conference win our girls powder puff won their second consecutive title and we wrapped up our last homecoming with my dear friend and vice president sophie allen being crowned homecoming queen to top off all the wins and excitement of fall sports and activities the gemtown marching band made history once again as they traveled to lucas oil stadium to perform at state finals for the very first time i personally have never been more proud of a group of people and i'm glad we got to finish our marching band season by mark marching at lucas oil landon buchanan once again made his way down to india for wrestling and ended his fantastic career by finishing fifth at state in february we completed our last and final jimmy olympics by winning the jimmy hammer and putting a great ratatouille hallway together even though we made miss polson panic throughout the whole process in march our theater program put together a fantastic performance of charlotte's web where elizabeth surface played a terrific and radiant charlotte in april our track baseball softball tennis and golf teams kept us busy as we slowly began to bring our senior year to a close and in may we danced the night away at our last prom and our student council threw together our first spring spectacular week while my high school experience might not have been straight out of the high school musical movies we definitely made memories i hope will last a lifetime well here we are at the end of our senior year sitting in our maroon or white cap and gowns about to start the next chapter of our lives i hope that all of you before me make a life for yourself that you are proud of and that you will be content wherever you may go i believe that all of you are made for greatness and made for a purpose and that you are loved by others it has been a pleasure to grow up alongside each and every one of you and i hope that maybe someday we will meet again i leave you with this quote from disney's happily ever after and so our journey comes to an end but yours continues on grab a hold of your dreams and make them come true for you are the key to unlocking your own magic now go let your dreams guide you reach out and find your happily ever after congratulations to the class of 2022 i wish the best for all of you and may god bless i now welcome our principal mr fletcher to lead us through the rest of our program good afternoon and welcome again to gemtown high school's 109th commencement ceremony i'm so very proud and eager to preside over today's ceremony it's always a joy to celebrate the achievements of our seniors and this class is no different before we move along i have several people i wish to thank i would like to start with mrs kathy bachman and the gemtown band for their wonderful kickoff to the ceremony today did a great job guys she and the marching band had a fantastic year the marching jimmies finished 10th last fall in the state marching competition thanks to mrs bonkman's coaching and tutelage and for her hard work she was also recognized as gemtown high school's teacher of the year congratulations again mrs bonkman appreciate you [Applause] i would also like to thank our senior class sponsors mrs poulston and mr gingrich you guys did a phenomenal job again in coordinating and putting together today's ceremony appreciate you both [Applause] i have to give a shout out to our counselors mrs yoder and mr schmicker they work hard year round but the last month or so of the school year is pretty hectic as they are working to ensure that these seniors before us meet all of their obligations to graduate congratulations guys you did it again i appreciate you both very much thank you [Applause] i would also like to remind everyone of the importance of our ceremony today the class of 2022 has done the work in the classroom to earn their recognitions today and we celebrate them however this day this commencement ceremony is for the families this is the time mothers and fathers siblings grandparents and other extended family members have waited for as a parent myself i know that we eagerly awaited for all three of our kids to graduate high sometimes you wonder if it's going to happen sometimes you can't wait for it to happen and then it happens and you're proud you're filled with joy and proud proudness and you just really want to celebrate your children and that's why we're here today we're here to celebrate this senior classes accomplishment so i ask that during the program we are all cognizant of each and every one in the audience who would like to hear and see their graduate cross the stage and hear their name when they are recognized let's make sure we keep today's event special and rev room and as the class of 2022 sits before us ready to close an important and monumental chapter in your lives i'm reminded of a quote from author and professor isaac asimov he once said quote education is not something you finish while we will attest today that every jimmy on this football field has completed their high school career just remember you haven't finished your education some of you will start college and meet new challenges and grow your minds via formal education some of you will enlist in the military and receive that special kind of education only the military can provide right mr cell others of you will join the workforce and continue to learn lessons that real world experiences offer and provide you no matter how you get it no matter how you receive it you will continue to be educated and i honestly believe there is one thing and one thing only in this world that every one of us truly has as our own and that is our education your education is truly yours forever the material things in your life can be taken away you can lose them but no one can take away the things that you put in your head those experiences facts processes and memories you have stored in your mind those are what makes each and every one of you special an individual i encourage you to continue to develop you on your journey through life keep an open mind find opportunities even in your ad adversities to continue to seek knowledge and work to understand yourselves and the world around you better and the cool part is when you become a parent yourself and you anticipate this day for your children you get to play a vital role in educating them just know that you are not yet a finished product none of us are and that's okay because your education as mr asimov said is not complete in fact it will never be finished i have faith that you all do wonderful things with your lives and just know that i appreciate each and every one of you thank you for being the class of 2022 at this time i would thank you all you may be seated before us today we have a total of 43 students who earned academic honors diplomas 16 students who earn technical honors diplomas we have 10 members of the national technical honor society and 18 members of the national honor society stan sitted before us there are 48 students who have earned dual credit they've already started their college transcript we have 19 graduating members of early college and on top of all of this many of these folks earned athletic and academic competition accolades they put trophies in the trophy case and by and large they carry themselves with integrity dignity and respect for four years at gemtown high school it is very difficult not to be proud of this amazing group of seniors and we celebrate you today thank you all at this time i'm going to pivot just a bit and i would like to call a special speaker to the podium to address our graduates this gentleman dare i say has been a fixture at bago for i think the majority of his life not only is he an alumni but he has also served as teacher principal and coach in such capacities he has touched the lives of countless students and staff in every building on this campus as well as on the baseball field for the last two years i've been honored to work alongside him i am pleased to call him a colleague and a friend mr mike style will you please address the class of 2022 [Applause] to the class of 2022 i say congratulations you made it i've spoken to you many times on occasion throughout your educational career and one thing that i continued to articulate to you was that your education was not a sprint it was a marathon a 26.2 mile marathon and that if you didn't run the last 0.2 miles of your marathon you wouldn't receive the award you wouldn't get the prize well you sitting here today going through this ceremony tells everyone here that you have successfully finished the race you have run your race and you'll get your prize the high school diploma each of you is now getting ready to embark on your next journey as mr pletcher said some of you your next step will be college some of you will actually be going off into the workforce and yet others will be enlisting into the military to serve our country whichever path you take enjoy the journey because along the way it's going to be an adventure for most of you your recent journey began approximately 13 years ago when you entered kindergarten what an exciting time in your life you were human sponges soaking up the learning experiences non-stop throughout each and every day many of you couldn't wait to ride the school bus to eat the school lunch learned to read get homework and yes there was recess i can still hear the sounds of the playground the screaming and the laughter of you playing with your friends i remember a book entitled all i really need to know i learned in kindergarten that book was first published in 1986 some 36 years ago but its core message is still relevant today as ever most of your lessons that you learned in kindergarten will carry you through the rest of your lives here are just a few of the lessons from the book that you possibly learned in kindergarten share everything play fair don't hit people put things back where you found them clean up your own mess don't take things that aren't yours say you're sorry when you hurt somebody flush when you go into the world watch out for traffic hold hands and stick together and last but not least warm cookies and cold milk are good for you as i look back and think there is still a lot of merit in those words you quickly wrapped up your elementary experience and it was off to see mrs brubaker as you cruise through the intermediate building heading to the junior high the mirror words junior high school have the power to make some a bit anxious and weaken the knees while causing some others both young and old alike to break into a cold sweat you know rarely do i ever hear anyone say geez i wish i could still look the way i did when i was 12.
