did they elect you yeah i think that's what i've been told i'll get you award in september good good bob was also responsible for grants that improved the education of the district as well as kept our buildings in top-notch shape and that's a question mark after that a new roof on the gym repairing sinkholes working on fire damage cracks and dicing walls and making classrooms safer our high school numbers improved each year especially during graduation whatever bob did it gave us all strength togetherness and dedication to the idaho school district bob was our leader he knew the names of every child that was registered at this school kids were always number one in his mother he was asked to be on the numeral and on many committees then they were state companies not just around here he was responsible for grants that improved the education of the district probably the largest one was the three million dollar one that we had not only did that improve our graduation rate but it also brought mercy ericon casey and dr you know no it's double mckenzie okay i called dr carrier dr carrio is another one that's what i was thinking didn't write probably this last year was one of the most difficult that you have been through when he when forced with criticism sometimes merited and sometimes just hateful he accepted this with very strong shoulders and leadership just don't call him a liar bob you will now start a new night and it i'm sure it will be an adventure and knowing you you will address it with anticipation and imagination at saturday's party i stole this bit off of one of the posters unfortunately i haven't got it accurate because they are those little filipinos every time i wanted to write it down they moved over it so i i've sort of written it on my own but i could not have written anything more fitting a good leader is hard to find a good leader is hard to part with and say goodbye a good leader will never be forgotten thank you julie for 20 years and we asked the chat uh has racked our organization in many organizations the last year almost two years a little over two years um and you know you all know that sometimes i get frustrated with our state government well this is another opportunity for that uh just an important part i've shared this with dr saltero so he can deal with it when he assumes leadership for a few weeks our legislature's passed two laws they've been enacted already they're already part of the statute one forbids any employer to in arizona to require copa shots the other one does not allow school districts produce public schools or charter schools to force masking without parent permission um it's hb 24 98 hp 26 16 and something you'll forgive and i didn't write down the statute but if you want a copy it came out of asba you all may have received that um it's uh i hope i hope that we're not being overly optimistic right now i think that code it's going to say stated in remission a little bit we've had two people affiliated with the district recently that became contested positive and that that concerns me i didn't want to believe it but i was feeling kind of optimistic until that happened uh summer school started this week thanks to your approval um we've had three days the highest days been 40 kids present pretty good for this time of year i think and the least has been 27.

we are using that same crm program or a similar facility of it for hr recruitment and so we had 177 leads for prospective employees coming in so we're working on different ways to make sure people are aware of who we are and what we have to offer uh the the approval of the salary schedules last board meeting uh has generated some interest in any number of people looking for employment i would just say that we are now competitive your difference between neighboring districts as of right now is probably hundreds of dollars not thousands of dollars so we're at 50 070 and someone else might be at 50 200 or something like that so we've narrowed that gap significantly and i don't think as a general rule that dollars are necessarily going to be the deciding reason why someone does or doesn't come uh or doesn't come in particular it might be travel and some of those kind of things so that that's a positive um and then we did spend uh 8 500 on our digital ads but we're seeing good return on on the digital ads and and getting the information out to uh just to tell our story uh and what we're doing in the district so that's been real positive graduation was very successful uh any number of individuals commented on the quality of the graduation program and so that's always nice when that goes off without a hitch we have started summer school titled summer school started last week high school online and middle school online started this week and so just to give you a rough idea we have 140 kids in the title summer school program we have 78 kids online and we have 552 face to face up at the high school and that's probably the biggest change with our summer school in the past we have not had the kids want to show up to the on or the face to face up with high school so we've done some online stuff previously and so that's probably the the best numbers we've had in quite a quite a few years so that's a positive uh we are starting some of our summer projects including uh symington at simonton and um harman we may have a little bit of an issue relative to uh one of the projects at symington um and so you may may end up seeing a change order come across as we explored what we thought was a dry well uh to to get water off the area it wasn't a dry well it was it didn't go very deep so we may have to put some additional drainage in there to run the water out to the playground or out to the ball fields so uh you might end up having a change order that will bring to you either at the meeting on the 20th or the meeting in july because that's the whole point of what we're trying to do is get that water out of there but until they did some explore exploration and dug up some ground we we just assumed that both schools were done the same way and had the drainage and it just turns out that that's not the case at this point um i also put just a ton of events because but it's the eighth so in uh basically a month all of our new teachers are reporting so there's more than a few people stressed out about how quick the summer's moving along but so i just want to give you an idea of of what we're doing with with the dates that are coming up and that's all i got question okay school and staff recognition i'll have dr goolsbee come up and talk about the alternative school madam board president and members of the governing board dr wyman and members of our learning community and families who've come to visit with us this is my first time standing before you to talk about the three newest schools in the combs center for success we want to welcome everyone to the pack as you can see from our logo we have three coyotes that's our connection to combs high school but we also represent three distinct schools and so we have our coyotes at the combs center for success our motto is one pack one purpose student success and being a smaller campus we feel like we have that luxury to really be able to look out for our students and help them find success on our campus this combs center for success serves three purposes for our district we provide a smaller learning environment personalized educational opportunities that include self-paced learning kids can accelerate we had a number of students who graduated first semester and started college in january we had other students who came back to us that can graduate at any point in time during the year and then they came back in may to be a part of graduation ceremonies so we offer modified scheduling and we offer a choice in learning modalities and we offer a big focus on credit recovery for students who are behind and want to go back to combs high school for their senior year so that they can graduate with their cohort as well as students this year from 2020 2019 and who came back to school and we are so proud of them to finish their diploma because they realized how important it was the journey we've been in existence since 2019 when you all approved three schools and each of our schools have a distinct goal and we started in 2020 we were actually at combs high school in the 400 building while the old district office was turned into the combs center for success and in 2020 we started with five students three teachers a principal and an administrative assistant and by the end of the year we had over 120 students and we had 30 students graduate from us in our very first year this year the state facilities board came and gave us our approval and this year because of kovid also we had a large influx of numbers of students who came to us because of their choice for safety to be in an online platform so we really did see our numbers grow and by the time we finished this year we had 11 members at school including seven teachers a part-time academic coach a part-time counselor a part-time receptionist and one full-time principal and our growth was around 250 but we ended up serving students because we're open entry at any point in time during the school year so kids can come to us but they can only go back to their home school at the semester point and so they were given the opportunity in january and you'll see in the numbers what happened to us the biggest thing i wanted to share with you was that we look at things as we're trying to build the schools that our students need so when we get a new student we are blessed with working with people all over the district to try to answer their needs so whether it's because they work 40 hours and they need a modified schedule or whether they have a specific iep and with the elementary schools every single elementary principal worked with their special ed department to make sure that their kids still got their services because the kids go back to their home schools and it's important that those kids go back ready to resume where they left off and also at the middle school in high school it's not just about services but it's about extracurriculars it's about still being involved in your community so we had football players we had kids who played volleyball we had kids who played girls softball we had a girl that was in the dance concert and we announced it at school and we truck over there and we watch the kids at combs high school we had kids at the middle school who were so excited because mrs ridge reached out to them and they participated in the 8th grade field trip and they got to go to the main event along with the other kids and nobody has to do that but they do because that's what it's about it's about having open house night and we don't have a regular bookstore but julie cook came to our open house to help parents with getting their computers it's about suddenly exploding and needing all these computers and everybody at the district and craig working with his team to make sure that our kids had the computers that they need and every time that we hit a bump in the road where we were like oh how do we do this now somebody stepped in and it was you know it's amazing things like next door at cta um the principal shayna schaffner there she worked with us to have our kids be able to go over on her campus and be lunch aids and help earn students assistant credit and not only that but the community around combs has helped our students finding jobs so that they can earn work credit while they're trying to graduate from high school and so that's what you know it takes and i i can leave a million people out you know next year i'm excited because i just got done talking with john grogan cte and he has a teacher of mine that's going to learn to do coding for next year so that we can offer a face-to-face class but it's those kind of can do how can we help you this is what's right for the kids that makes a difference and it's that teamwork that we're all encouraged to participate in so that's what i mean by building the schools this year we started out with 58 elementary students who joined us between july and september and at the midpoint you can see about half of them went back to their home school the middle school students that were online we started out with 38 in the first semester and we ended up with 22 in the second semester the high school numbers we have online as many as 213 students and now that we've had our graduates leave us and we have our kids going back to the home schools we have 90 and we'll do this every year because we're ready to start with new kids now and register new kids for next semester the face-to-face group this year we had 13 middle school students either by their requests or by placement and we also had 104 kids who came to us during the day at the high school face to face to finish their credit in 2021 as i told you we graduated 30 out of our 60 seniors and that might seem kind of strange with a 50 maybe low to you but a lot of the students that come with us have four credits out of 22 have five credits and then we have the lucky ones that come to us with 20 credits and they just want to get done as quick as possible but this year we had 62 percent of our seniors graduate 70 out of the class of with 42 out of 60 kids coming to us and those first five students that started with us the very first year we started they're all graduated and this year we graduated another group including those eight seniors from the class of 2021 20 and 19.

i'm so upset about how poorly mr kelly's been treated and what a disrespectful thing just happened to all the parents all the students all the teachers at ais five years ago i was on the interview committee for the new principal i felt like i was part of the interview team in a recent article they said this was unanimous choice for this position well i'm pretty sure unanimously at ais we wanted mr calvinists so either it was a misprint or whoever you had interviewing didn't take all of us into consideration i love what you wrote about the other principle that you like to hire within we love to see people grow in their careers within our school district mr callanese has grown substantially in the eight years i've seen him he's moved from first grade to fourth grade teacher he's run the elp for many years he's been the principal during summer school i'm not really sure what else he needed to do to prove to you besides being a flawless interim principal to ais what he needed to do to prove his worthiness as principal for ais long term i'm saddened i'm so frustrated for the school i've loved and put years and years of my time into this school and i just think it's a really tragedy that he was not second as our principal [Applause] christina stovall [Music] i am also a parent of ais students i also have the unique lens as being a teacher and speech-language pathologist in another district i was shocked when i got the phone call yesterday that not only was chris roach promoted happily but that mr calvinis was not promoted to that position ais has been a second family to parents that go there i volunteered my time for several years for odyssey the mind as well as her stem scouts before that was cut short by the pandemic you take care of your family matt calvinist has been a cornerstone of ais since my children attended and well before dr nattowski was allowed to pick the cream of the crop from this district to develop ais matt calvinist and christopher roach continued that dream this school received numerous awards over the past years for its excellence in the state of connecticut received more funding due to the leadership of these individuals you take care of your family when the pandemic hit nothing stopped it was like clockwork teachers were asked to assume different types of instruction and we did it seamlessly we did it seamlessly because of teachers and leadership like matt halvinis my family did remote from home my children had anxiety about returning in person back to class matt calvinis helped my kids get through that he's bridged gaps with esl parents when our kids did not have food on the table because our population were day workers who suddenly had no income we've rallied as parents and teachers to bring food into the schools to make sure our students were not only fed educationally but their bellies were full when kids didn't have and parents didn't have money for christmas gifts that first coven because they could barely keep the rooms over their heads teachers and the leadership like matt calvinist made sure every kid got a present that's a passionate teacher you take care of your family i'm quite disgusted given that christina that's three minutes if you could i'm disgusted that the interview process was changed at the last moment i also would love to see where all of these unanimous votes came from it's a sad day when you lose a family member and it's a sad day when you lose a passionate teacher thank you [Applause] please make it a little bit more cheery the optics not the conversation this is all very important good evening everyone i hope you're all doing well tonight as most of you know i'm the danbury democratic party chair but i'm also a father of two danbury elementary school kids first here i want to thank the people who worked to pass yesterday's referendum as many of us are too aware our school systems are currently suffering crisis level overcrowding this bond is a good start but it's only to start in addressing the challenges some of which i'm here to share the fight for resources is far from over physical space is only part of the problem our schools are facing funding has been and will continue to be the elephant in the room i assure you that i agree more money has to come from the state in terms of ecs but i also understand that our own city has not been willing to fulfill its part to our children our teachers and our staff now that the bonding is done i hope to see everybody here everybody here actively advocating for the correct level of resources to run that career academy efficiently more importantly effectively i made this request of you because it was disappointing and upsetting to see board members being silent when there are public opportunities for this board to speak on the 22-23 school year budget that it unanimously approved indeed essential operations at the city council level along the same lines this shirt can concern all of us when a democratic held vacancy for boec arises and an express sexually qualified candidate endorsed by the navy democratic town committee and supported by every democrat in this body that politics took a turn and now one member of the republican party voted for her what this looks like to those of us watching is political agendas we should have no place here i'm upset so you know here we are and it just had no place here and it looks like things are threatening themselves through appointments decisions and we have to assume strategies we need members of this body fully committed to the needs of the public schools and not to any schools organizations outside of the scope of this body's responsibility it is a nearby laws in section 9271 in the quote of ethics under number 11 to never use the position of the board for personal gain again from a community member perspective and those i've been talking to it looks like this code is not being honored by all members next here's my father hat and just upset things i've seen i ask that all of you tour the schools talk to the teachers the students and the staff individually and candidly then take what they say and do your jobs advocating for them and i say this nonpartisan to both parties while i was in dhs just the other day for a gun advocacy a day here i had maybe spent 30 minutes when i was already approached by somebody who recognized me from a previous endeavor some of you might be familiar with and showed me the shape of the steps in the courtyard here at this high school i brought pictures here but you know i didn't know the media was going to be here until this morning so pictures you could probably tour after the steps are crumbled somebody tripped i heard about wrap it up and as i was looking at that and then somebody saw me take that picture it's like roberto go look at the gym i walked into that main gym the state's largest high school the main gym and there are mounds on the hardware floor at one point at one position of it it's at least 12 inches maybe off from where the floor should be and that gym from what i understand has been closed since the other basketball season this is unacceptable and i'm not blaming the staff or the part of that because i understand you don't have money to do anything i i'm asking you here to advocate for the public schools and not another organization advocate for the graphic if the folks you're elected to advocate for all you have to do is go on donor's shoes to see the 58 items at the end of the school year that are still there people asking for basic supplies like pencils pens pencil sharpeners to do their job this is unacceptable and i hope that you guys start changing the direction that we're doing here and advocate for what you're elected to do to the republic schools thank you very much everybody [Applause] robin hi good evening um my name is robin alice and i'm the mother of a first grade and third grade student at shelter rock um we'll also mention that i went to denver public schools from kindergarten through 12th grade frank can you just hold on um john uh kim thank you go ahead um so i just wanted to add you know that i'm very proud of these schools and i'm a strong advocate for them um so i was very happy to see that the funding passed for the new career academy which i think is very crucial but again his first step i just wanted to make sure that the board knows i'm sure you know but the public is out here and we crucially need the funding for this school and for other schools we've recently heard rumors that our child's elementary school is going to lose their art classroom because there's not enough space and they need another actual classroom so it's very upsetting to us with a child who loves arts or favorites special it's not fair to our child or to any other child in the schools you know we went to the art festival at broadview and it was absolutely an amazing turnout so i'm sure that this is very important to most of the families in danbury as well so basically i'm just here asking can we please continue to fight for the funding we need um come up with a plan the elementary schools there's clearly space there's an issue there as well the new academy is going to address middle and high school but you know as we've seen over the years these things quickly catch up and we're underwater again so if we can come up with a plan ahead of time get ahead of our problems you know that's all i'm asking that is all um who have signed up for uh public participation is there anyone else who would like to speak who did not sign up maria thank you my name is maria schweitzer and i am here on behalf of numerous ais parents i am just here to let the board know sorry to put my glasses on that even though parents may be willing to welcome a newly appointed individual some parents all the ones that i've spoken with are very disappointed by the fact that the interim principal mr calvinis who knows the school and the district and most importantly the students was not elected in all the years that i've been at ais eight to nine years this educator mr calvinist has gone above and beyond for the school and has been the right hand man to the principal parents are very disillusioned by the manner in which this interview process was handled furthermore parents are disillusioned by the district's lack of concern for the children and for the families by not inviting parents to participate in this process especially during a time that students are suffering and need the utmost regard the district administration seems to have made a decision for better or worse without any consideration for the families involved thank you speak who did not sign up barley good evening everyone thank you madam chair i didn't get to the uh form any time um first of all congratulations to all the retirees i just added another really quickly it's 593 years my middle school music teacher as well congratulations to you um i'm going to be very briefly i'm going to talk about two different things today um i'll start off with uh the issue with the board appointment i served my own body with many of you here i'm disappointed twice someone who has the knowledge the experience the wherewithal to serve alien on this body has been passed up because of political points i would say that's disappointing because when we serve on this body one of the things that we've done and actually inside this room we held workshops was we would say politics stays at the door not so much anymore that's disappointing and so as a former board of education member as a city council member it's really disappointing to see that perhaps agendas are being pushed as opposed to what is best for our students secondly i will echo mrs alv's comments my daughter is a student at shelter rock art is one of her favorite subjects and she comes home every day that there is art and she's got a book in front of her and she's going to continue drawing in it and she tells me about where our teacher taught her inside the classroom right well now she can't have that classroom supposedly next year well i'm very happy that the career academy passed and the vote was so large in support i'm disappointed in the fact that we have not done enough not just your fault city council as well not done enough to address the overcrowding issues in our schools and now my little girl and that little precious girl there is not going to have an art class to go to her teacher will be teaching arts on carts what's next music room the janitor's closets already been taken so i don't know where else i'll put anything else it's our jobs as elected officials to address these things and i hope that you all take it as serious as i know you will and i appreciate what your service here on this board is and i hope that you'll keep our public schools the center focus of your role on this program thank you [Music] so that we end at a reasonable time i believe our bylaws have us finishing um 10 pm so i'm gonna participation and move on thank you all for coming i'm not nice one more time [Music] the board of education approved the items on the consent calendar exhibits 22 dash through 22-76 as recommended any discussion uh our students please hi good evening board of ed members cabinet and community members thank you for allowing me to represent and speak on behalf of the alternative center for interviews excellence prospective students and their families will take place this saturday june 11th opportunity to hear our students stories thank you for allowing us to share what's going on with our ace family stay safe roommate is strong this summer everyone i'm graduating next week and i won't be the board of ed um representative anymore which made me really sad and i just wanted to thank you all for allowing me to you know have this position and i want to thank ace for allowing me to do this and i really loved and enjoyed representing ace and i i truly love ace with all of my heart and all oh my god so thank you for giving me this chance i also wanted to thank you guys for allowing me to be here too it's been fun i don't know if i'll be here again [Music] [Applause] i couldn't wait to hear from our students and their educational representatives okay would you mind do you have a microphone the action in a phase oh [Music] on the bottom that the board of education approved the amendment to the food service agreement to extend the agreement for one year july 1 2021 2022 through june 20 june 30 2023 in accordance with exhibit 22-77 there's a motion on the floor for a second segment by ralph any discussion being none all those in favor any opposed any abstentions motion passes uh lauren would you do the calendar action 90-day sure i make a motion that the board of education approved the revised 2022-2023 school calendar in accordance with um 22-78 there's a motion on the floor is there a second second by brigid any discussion all those in favor from singapore by saying aye approved [Music] all those in favor please subscribe saying aye aye opposed any abstentions motion carries uh ralph would you like to do deep please oh no do you want me to i'll give it to you [Music] 141 million dollars in accordance with 22-8 here's the question on the floor is there a second segmented by bridgette any discussion um i really feel we need to update this number with of got lost i wanted to be able to look back two minutes and be able to clearly see where those funds are coming from and how much we're actually getting on an annual basis i think that's really important for our budget process so i don't know if we can approve this motion and then maybe approve a second motion uh once we determine what's happening with the reserve funds um or how that might work but i would like to see that information reflected here john would you like to speak to that i mean last month to add the reserves to our motion so to speak to uh for permission to spend um not just 141 million but 143.8 the reason we asked was last year there was disagreement after the decision was made and that is exactly what led to some confusion at the city council was how high was our budget increase this year we were counting the reserve they were not so we're hoping to get a positive answer to that we don't have to get so i think it would be premature [Music] the city has um authorized 141 million emails there's been no approval for the reserves sure absolutely any other uh that leads us to superintendent's report thank you for our church so i will start with as we have talked about it great length this evening as part of my reporting update for the board is the appointment of two elementary principals one is miss merrill jackson from the committee recommending her and appointing her as the principal at ais elementary school oh jackson comes to us from white plains elementary school currently serving as an assistant principal in that district in the past last seven years and we had as part of our process for the board members who are not typically part of the i'm sorry for board members who have not served on interview panels there are two panels that um run concurrently by policy and so one policy is made up of staff of our buildings with quarterback representation and then there is another panel with made up of administrators also with board representation and so both panels um recommend someone to the last step which is the superintendent's level of course i am there with my cabinet as that last as that last step of the process the process does not call for both sides to have necessarily the same candidates being recommended and the the way i like to speak to it is we respect certainly the recommendations from those levels but anyone who comes to us anyone who's recommended to that last step it's important for us to make sure that those committees are comfortable with anyone who said to us because all of those folks are going to be considered for any vacancies so they just wanted to walk the board through the current process as now and and frankly i think we heard some feedback over the last couple of days that frankly probably should might require some further review of our policy to just make it a little bit more inclusive i think the staff made some really good points in terms of inclusivity as part of the process and it might be time to revisit our own policy which might include a little bit more voice from the respective schools so i will add that but i i want to make it clear we feel confident we have hired um an excellent candidate to serve as a principal and miss carl jackson the other appointee is um who a person who's actually not a stranger to this district donatello formerly danbury high school served i served an assistant principal here at danbury high school for years and it was currently once dr anna rocco was appointed as chief of schools don filled in successfully as an interim principal and like miss jackson was also the appointed candidate so very excited about the two candidates who have been named and i certainly understand and respect the differences of opinion from the staff and some of our families this evening but we have two candidates we're really excited about summer school i just wanted to share this update for the board we are we find ourselves in a really tough position this year we have invited families kenny garden through fifth grade for summer school as we had in years past historically it's typically been a k-3 summer invitation during the pandemic that was increased to k-5 as the state had stated that we could we may invite for grades four and five and we were inviting grades four and five this year we're challenged with staffing and i think um like well i know the board has heard from many teachers across the district administrators across the district that that's that this school year has been like no other quite frankly as we return to school our staff is tired they're exhausted our administrator is exhausted our teachers our staff is exhausted and i think it played itself out in our interest in working this summer and so after reviewing this with the team it looks like we have enough to offer summer school for kindergarten through three we did not have enough staff to offer summer school for grades four and five unfortunately we are not alone in this challenge in terms of staffing so we've had to revise our letters and invitations to families um and typically our summer school experience is four-week summer school um this year it will be two two-week sessions and so we we understand this is going to be a hardship for many of our families particularly families who count on our child care over the summer but we unfortunately we're going to need families to make some adjustments we will have again we will have some intervention opportunities this summer but it will be a little bit more limited than past years i'm hoping next year is more of a normal school year and we will be able to return to typical staffing one that we've had in years past so just just to conclude um we will have instead of one four week session for grades k through five uh we will have two two week sessions for grades k through three and the team is working on notifications by families and trying to encourage families uh to a commitment to sending their children to summer school so we can make the accommodations uh kelly just wanted to add our special education summer school program has not been impacted and we will still run the five week summer school program so i know as we've made changes and then i have two more updates for the board and that is i just want to start with dee and that's danbury career academy task force update we had our meeting last week with the council with the mayor's office and folks from my team um and as part of our second meeting this year uh we provided an update this last meeting dr cameron would testimony would you mind speaking to what we talked about this week and then kind of what's ahead for september so we did we went over some of the programmatic um pathways and outlined um we used the medical technology of practice to highlight really the high level rigorous curriculum that we have planned and really engaging kind of hands-on experiential learning opportunities that will exist so we're partnering with some groups to help acquire some not just curriculum but for example and a few you may have already seen through the curriculum community at hand um where these neuroscience bio movements to program code a prosthetic hand and this would be kind of a core project as an example in the technology program um which we thought was an exciting way to to showcase some of the great things that we have in store and so um as we continue to develop our program components we'll start to showcase those and present those to the column and it's also a great way for the kids to start to get an understanding of what's offered in each in each pathway program as far as september goes um that'll be an opportunity for us to really talk about whether the referendum has passed on what we'll actually take to to staff the new location um in terms of ftes right now we're running through some scenarios where we're measuring out staffing that's needed at denver high school the staffing that would be needed at the new building and then the transfer of ftes in terms of when we move students over what that would build how many extra staff members it would take to open up the school plus or minus along with projecting things like transportation um and any other you know areas of funding that will be needed to offer this school to become an honest pleasure thank you thank you thank you and last but not least i wrote down a bunch of names um my office we pushed out a thank you letter to all of the danbury families this evening and community members who supported our referendum so needless to say the board the team and i are very excited to hear the news last night that the referendum passed successfully um overwhelmingly yes in support um i can't thank our families and our community members enough i i just want to say and i i just want to want to make sure i don't miss any names i'm sure i'm going to leave someone out but there were a lot of people who came together to make this happen um i have to start of course with mayor esposito for helping to lead the separate uh thing our town council um who supported this um agenda initiative from the beginning i really appreciate their support um representative arkanti who we understand has worked diligently in the background helping to move this work forward senator judy kuchner who obviously also helped move from this work from the beginning um but there were more people like and there's just so many people who played a role in this a board chair um obviously rachel chaletsky and our board members um david have already mentioned but all of our representatives who played a role in supporting this the democratic council on the republican town committee and i also have to mention our teachers any nea president erin the cea who also partnered with us to make this happen and push the word out we had teachers who were calling the community throughout this process i can't thank everyone enough for coming together and doing what we could to support this initiative this was an amazing effort and frankly we did it in like two or three weeks where this community really rallied and and we're really on to something special we still have a lot we still have a ways to go we have a building right now um obviously we're excited about that we understand this is going to happen in stages but my team and i now we have our work cut out for us as we have to continue to educate this community about the budgetary needs that's going to take over that building successfully so that that is it for my updates i understand there may be some questions am a little uncomfortable with um i think there's a lot of passion [Music] [Applause] thank you um do you want a chance do you want to talk about the process that she has outlined in our sure i i'm happy to several people around the world have actually participated this year in the process we did one today as a matter of fact um and this board process this procedure was established i would say it was probably 11 10 or 11 years ago now and it was established as a multi-tiered process that wrong stakeholders from all different basically all different areas um the board policy requires two panels on one panel is made up of those generally those who most likely to effectively be affected by the hire and the other panel are administrators typically office curriculum folks what we would call crc folks the people who spend a lot of time on curriculum and instruction the time what we have learned is that it's a very robust process that works best with both panels having their conversations their um questions their responses and then i debrief with those panels afterward so we don't ask for example one panel does not have primacy over the other if we don't have to pass the one to get to the other we don't run it in order we have conversations about what we've seen in the candidates i take co-based notes and i um then agree with both panels and then share with the leadership team kind of what we've seen and what we typically are doing is two things we're looking for obviously the best candidate for the position but we're also looking for candidates that we think might be great in this case administrators in the district we make a decision about bringing back those candidates who have really come risen to the top of those panel um discussions for a final round of interviews um this year the final round of interview typically has been before cabinet but this year we added the chiefs so both chiefs of the elementary and secretary edward in that final round of interviews as well and then this this leadership team then makes a recommendation and obviously the superintendent is part of that discussion we settle on the candidate and then that's all the decisions so it's a pretty robust process all candidates typically at the beginning of the process or have to prepare a writing sample in some cases when we have large numbers of candidates we may also do a video screen we did not do that in this case but we did do the writing sample and those documents are also made available to all decision makers across qualifications so we followed the same board per stride policy on his time as we did today with the broadband candidates as we've done as we will do with the region never candidates um and the assistant from the high school to follow so um can you elaborate on what what stakeholders like who who's on who or who's on the committee so there are board members there are teachers um there are what i would call curriculum heads so a lot of the folks that are on paris teams in content areas um we try to make it a diverse group we try to include stakeholders from different areas of different content areas um just to get a diversity representation the two chiefs were a nice addition to the final round this year because they both as as fate would have it they both came from those schools so they were also pledging them for the last round as well any teachers from the school on that so in this case what i did was i um asked both chiefs who were the principals to please provide me their recommendations for the parents of the teachers which is what they did my question would be you ask for recognition from the teachers at their school how many pieces did you have on that family from ais so um this year was we were a little bit hamstruck because testing went on that day so we had our last we have two last minute withdrawals but again the and i can't get two board rooms that were sitting on those panels we had one worker and one and then it seems that there is a lot of passion from the staff and the parents of ais and i think passion is always fantastic i'm glad that people feel that they can come to the board of ed and have this conversation and we appreciate that you did that um putting a new principle in that space as it seems that we're going to do is there any way we can plan to help that transition because we'd like to if we're going to have any principles set at least he or she up for success um so perhaps there is more conversation that we could have so that everyone is comfortable going into the new school year uh something that we can do to to help to help everybody make the transition easier right and so thank you thank you for making that quite great um so one the which is part of the interview process we've asked all the candidates to provide an entry plan and i made um miss jackson aware of the challenges when i say challenges i mean um the support for for mr calvinist in this instance um and when i say challenge i'm talking about someone who's joining us who's probably watching this on tv at home right now and understanding potentially what she might be walking into and she has quite frankly embraced the challenge one of the first things she said to us was i'm probably going to have to revisit my entry plan and i hope to have an opportunity to debrief with you after the board meeting which is obviously this evening so my team and i we will walk her through what we've learned over the last couple of days certainly share the passion that we've heard from families and staff and revisit her entry plan obviously that was during the interview now it's a little bit more real you know given the appointment but the team certainly will be supportive as part of that entry process and mr roach of course is not only a former principal there but also will be her supervisor um all will be available to help her with that transition so we we are planning and anticipating um you know it's not going to be ideal circumstances but certainly we will be there to support for that transition and the staff as well we only have one administrator so we don't have an assistant principal mr calvinist was serving as the interim principal um when we promoted chris roach to the chief of schools we hope so yes okay i guess my question is is he going back to like what is fourth grade where yes um yeah i mean i know that we have different procedures that we follow but we ever get feedback from parents in those situations we haven't i mean we have on occasion had a pto i'm trying to remember we haven't had someone we've had pto we've done as this process has evolved over time we've done different things um you know i've heard somebody talked about a process where the faculty should have created a profile i've certainly been involved in that when we opened the new west side middle school that was a pretty rigorous process where um there was a physician paper to create the school and then we had lots of people come in to try to craft a profile for what kind of administrator we were looking for that administrator was hired i would say six months in advance to go ahead and roll we've done different things in different circumstances um we've done a lot of her as they were having a lot of elementary principles in the last couple of years i'm sure two possible questions one is the decision to hire end up on the desk of the superintendent and two would it be proper to uh give us an explanation it's probably why canada [Applause] no we can't answer the second question you certainly can't two things um one um at one point i was on a panel where there was some ptl parents and stuff involved and two i'll ask the question is matt going back to fourth grade at ais would be that he would return to the decision he was in prior to disappointment and i heard the superintendent say that this and your team is going to be supported and i hope the people there at ais will be supportive of her but as i think as i have said on this board for 31 years why would you want to bring someone in an environment and it's going to be hospital everyone's not going to be there to support that person and i think at some point how do we talk about this as a group needs to be spoken about because i heard a lot of things don't say it tonight i heard people from the leadership from the community and other people and i think at some point and again over the years i'm sitting on all type of panels and our human resource director can tell you that and sometimes it's not who we want and it's the reason that we want these people and i needed to i leave it to the leadership of the people that we have hired to help make that right decision and we have board members that are sitting on those panels so you know things are not going to always i want a million dollars but god knows so i think you know uh to my main focus is if this person has a qualification that has had went through the interview process and and i've heard that this is the person for the job then to bring that person in because it happened quite a few years ago now i'm not going to name this cool okay and it made it very difficult for that person to work and finally that person back so you know i think this is type of stuff that we really type of things that we really need to talk about individuals i sit with 11 board members up here i don't have anything against anyone we all have different views i share my views you show or share your views with me i might like you you might not like me that's special for architecture okay but we all have to work together to make our schools better to make our young people better and while they're in that school get the best education that they can that's why i have sit on the floor for 31 years like i have to mention antonio ayarolo because he was pretty instrumental in helping us at the state level um knowing that process was was a huge help in in the quick way that everything was put through so shout out to him and also previous mayor mark foughten who started the original dps task force um back in 2019 and before that we were sitting in the sites and facilities committee with dr sal and looking over our space utilization study and that's really where it began and and of course when the cabinet i mean it's just it's in exciting uh hurdle that we overcome and um i mean we've got a long way to go obviously but we should certainly celebrate this it's work it's worth it um so with that said uh i do want to welcome our new member board member julie miliano thank you for um and i want to go back to our memorial day parade and say thank you to those that came out to represent the board and for lauren for providing transportation to really love the day and a good representation of the board in the public eye we had i don't want to um overstep gladys as the superintendent evaluation committee chair but i do want to mention um we had a superintendent valuation committee uh last night uh we had a very i thought it was a very good discussion a very lengthy discussion but a good one nonetheless um i do i have to say again i i feel like kind of a broken record but attendance is critical at these meetings even though if you're not a committee member it's important to be there just to know what's going on to know to be familiar with the vote that will come after a committee meeting but also um to not uh delay progress in in the work you know we did have a three-hour discussion so to go back and and recap and to answer questions that may have been talked about at those the committee meetings um again attendance is critical especially you know i know everyone has as other things going on it's a very busy time of year so i just appreciate those that came out and again we had a good a good conversation i'm hoping to continue that conversation at a special meeting if the finance committee chair doesn't mind holding his finance money meeting on tuesday june 14th at 6 pm if you all could attend and possibly we talked about hoping the finance committee earlier in that day doing a lunch meeting as we did at our last finance meeting than today that's right if we could do it at noon it's over soon thank you okay at so a full board meeting so we can continue that discussion and wrap things up we do have to um vote on without you know the validation of the superintendent as well as the um exempt employees i did forward an invitation from ksi who's having their moving up ceremony on june 16th they're actually two ceremonies in the morning 9 a.m and 11 a.m byo chair it's outside and indoors if inclement weather and we race i don't know if that's on our it's not on our agenda but we race is having their ceremony on tuesday june 21st at 6 30 at danbury high school and also the people empowering people graduation is thursday june 30th at 6 pm at hatter's hall i believe we all received email invitations for these but i just want to make sure you all receive that when you're aware that's happening [Music] and then the other thing i wanted to say and i didn't plan this but it came up during public participation was the participation of the board during the budget process this was a unique year we tried to begin conversations earlier and more frequently with the city as board chair i did i was involved in those meetings on several occasions as i could attend they were on a weekly sort of a weekly basis there were a few where um an attendee or two but the other thing is i you know i had my opportunity to speak at the city ad hoc committee meeting i presented on behalf of the board there what is what was in those minutes for that meeting it was a very very short clip of what i actually said um and so if you watch the full the full video you'll get the the whole gist of my speech in which i did advocate for our our schools and then i do want to say also when i and i didn't want to take away time away from public participation that's meant for the public having said my piece and i appreciate those board members who let me know ahead of time that they were going to speak at the public hearings at city hall and i mean that's i i just had to get that off my chest and share that so that's all i have for as a board chair report are there any other board comments questions updates hey um i just want to thank the the folks that came in this evening to speak with us you know part of what we're trying to do in this space is create community conversations and you know we're not always going to agree on things we're not always going to be able to fix the problems that are right in front of us as they're happening but the first step is opening that communication up and you know i hope you feel that we listened to you this evening we heard your voices um and that they matter to us um back to board business um [Music] an excellent excellent event the staff there did an amazing job of walking each of the students through project-based learning where each group got to present and operating as a judge it was like really a great experience i highly recommend it to any of the board members here you get that invitation it's such a great way to talk to kids find out about their excitement about what they're doing and connect with them and show them that the adults in our community care about them and care about what they're doing so i can't recommend that enough i also did get over to the high school they had a day of action against gun violence and we had quite a few legislators that were there also to support um you know a great event there were a lot of kids in the courtyard that were happy to see us wanted to engage in conversations wanted to you know let us know how they're feeling and what they're going through and you know i know that security is always something that's very high on our list you know trying to do problem solving and figuring out how we can make sure our space and stay safe and i just want to commend those students for you know taking action making it a day of action and engaging in that conversation with us thank you thanks i'm just going to comment on kate's mention of the tbl there is one word there is one more pbl tonight it's tomorrow night at broadview so if you didn't have an opportunity to go to ais or to rogers park last week tomorrow night it is at broadview it will probably be as fantastic as as the other pbl experiences to really see what our students are learning engaging and enjoying in their history classes is amazing and if you haven't already responded i'm sure they would love more judges at tomorrow night's event so that's brought you i did my tomorrow speech uh for the superintendent evaluation committee uh members that um received a package that were not there last night uh and we will be receiving some additional information tuesday night is just around the corner please go into your focus read your information so we can go over and won't have as long as meeting will not take it long on tuesday night so please if you didn't get your package i don't i would assume they're at people's world but there's information in there that you need to review i think everyone received them this evening at their places correct did you receive a folder okay good and if you could look at the form that we have to fill out and i think if everyone brings just a couple sentences for each category on the form it would be more productive ahead of time come with some thoughts on paper come prepared thank you anybody else [Applause] um any discussion no no discussion all those in favor [Music]

one of the things i like about i like a lot of things about our kids uh that's rare in the summertime when i see a kid i'll wait two weeks after school's up maybe before i ask this you give me a scoop ninety percent of the time he answers yes so that speaks highly of the teachers and they feel good here on campus and i appreciate that that kind of makes our time worthwhile um the uh there's an article you may have seen i didn't realize it's gonna be a paper this is an arizona republic um and heard about from several people today the title of the article is arizona schools struggle to improve security the uh on byline is a young lady the first name first name is gianna y-a-n-a she started contacting me maybe four months ago arizona middle school's executive director called me and said you're going to get a call from the reporter he said she was asking some questions about covet and facilities in rural schools and he said i took he's he stroked my ego he probably just doesn't want me to talk he said well dewey's the one to talk to and so we talked about that but also in that process after the uh uvalde uh shooting i said to the board larry you folks i talked about the fact that after the parkland shooting of the shooting document of kids uh in schools uh that i sent a letter to the governor all right nsfb facility liaison pardon me our three legislators and states in template construction i had one five-minute call from someone way down the food chain at the department of bed nothing ever happens and so um there's an organization called arizona center for law the public interest a lawsuit that was ruled that was approved up and supported by the supreme court in 1994 it's called roosevelt versus bishop roosevelt y'all knows a huge elementary district in south phoenix because of the population sometimes they're not politically powerful because it's a lot of poverty uh diverse population i've never worked there i've had friends and i've had friends that work here i know the district and that's unfortunate it's very unfortunate in our culture but um the bishop at the time diane bishop of the states you can tell states we're getting public instruction good person i thought well this lawsuit caused sfb to happen and supposedly sfb which if they've changed their name someone told me dss or something you all know sfb their job their primary focus is to build schools for districts they're having growth and to keep schools in good repair it's been speaking of a tough year we started working on the roof project here probably last july we're finally the 21st of this month we're going to have a meeting in this room a pre-bid meeting so contractors can see the possibility of the needs and give them some information to help make them make significant bids and then dr center i told him you're on the next one it's july 21st to show the bids ready to rock and roll and i'd hope that i've been here to see this happen um initially we thought it was going to be about 800 000 last time i talked to the architectural firm has been giving us some advice they're saying 1.3 to 1.4 and that was in september something may have gotten worse since then because commodities are much shorter um so this this article well anyway back to the arizona center for a lot of public interest they the lawsuit with that lawyer eventually retired he's a good man they now have a young heart young he's probably 40.

and in total our students also who work in edgenuity last year they completed three whole it's a whole year course of 391 of them courses finished and this year and i included for you some edge annuity data but our kids completed over 750 courses that they needed to do our first through sixth graders are not included in that because they do grade level work in florida virtual school and it's not a course by course thing but it's a content curriculum and a grade for their efforts in the class so um we are proud to be the combs center for success and i wanted to have you hear from one of our seniors because i think it's important for you to hear from our students as to the impact of what we're doing so i would like to introduce you to recently graduated senior mr thomas lamar [Applause] hello i am thomas lamar and hey hello my name is thomas lamar i am 18 and i am a first year graduate my life story isn't like most trump wouldn't actually know that i would existed if unless they went to the meeting or watched it online i before i came to san tan valley i lived with my dad and i lived in to live with my dad i lived in north phoenix with my mom in 2027 or 2000 2017 my parents separated and ultimately ended in a divorce that took a toll on my mental health after the divorce came after the divorce i became extremely behind in school and wasn't and was in and out of facilities four times and became heavily dependent upon marijuana by the end of my junior by the end of my junior year all of that happened by the end of my junior year was in and out of the 30s i became extremely behind and i was heavily dependent on marijuana and the week of my 17th birthday was a great one but ending pretty badly the day after my birthday i got into a huge fight with my mom over the phone and later that day i wrote i oh i'm sorry i called my dad and we ended up moving out here and yes and decided to come to comes but i wasn't i was going to originally go to the original homes but when i was in there i they told me i if i wanted to graduate i would my best chances would be at ccs so i went to ucs i was told that i have 25 semester long to complete in order to graduate i was terrified not only not only did i have the 25 classes but i also worked 35-40 hours a week at prize i didn't think i was going to graduate i didn't think any of this was possible i thought i was another year as a senior well after my first going to homes and after a while i had a really bad time i broke down a lot went down and i did not want to do anything completely unmotivated well with the incredible help from dr g um miss golden miss wyman miss um wooton and ms v hill they all incredibly incredible who oh my you're good i'm super nervous an incredible amount and i made it i'm now i i had a goal to graduate or finish all my schoolwork before i day before i i finished my last year and i also had a gold manager a prize what a manager i just bought a smart decision yeah okay thank you guys thank you good job so i'd like i'd like to thank thomas for sharing his story and i think as most everyone knows that every student's journey is a little bit different but we were so proud of thomas and what he did this year and the kids don't really say it but it means working at home it means working at night it means coming in on saturdays and it means giving up a lot of things to get to that finish line but he was determined and he did it and we're very proud of him and one of the best things about working with seniors is you get to see them grow up and they're amazing so this is a picture of thomas and a friend at the pack we value personal responsibility academic integrity community stewardship and kindness and respect because we're concerned about the kids academic progress but even more so we're considered about them as human beings and this is a thank you to our staff who never says no and who worked really hard with the group that we had this year and i get to as part of my presentation give a blue apple and my blue apple is going to someone who couldn't be here this evening because she's in disney world because [Laughter] she's off and running but um our counselor mrs julia godin who is incredible with the kids both virtually and in person and created a virtual counselor's room for our kids and is also the counselor at cta so she did double duty but even more special about mrs goden is she is an example of how homes grows their own she started out at home's high school as an intern where she worked with some of the best counselors in the business who prepared her and then at the end of her internship they suggested to her that she take a job as a classified administrative assistant while she finished her coursework and get her certification so she became my admin assistant and then she applied for our counselor's position and became the counselor at the two schools she is a member of this community her kids attend home school and miss julia godin is my recipient for the blue apple and everyone at our school and our students truly appreciate her dedication her kindness her attention to detail and making sure that their transcripts are correct and her ability and willingness to do anything thank you thank you you did a great job on your presentation just let me know that there's many parents that come up here and they do the same thing and i think anybody that comes up and talks is always nervous but you did great and congratulations on graduating and and i'm coming up here to do another group too but um before that sits down and comes that's why we started the program uh when you take a look at those kids that were falling through the crack um in this area when i was hired we were asked to go ahead and make sure we program and help those kids and so um that's why we did what we did uh the last group of people if you know we recognize people throughout the year um with different employee groups in the different departments and the different schools but there's a group we wait till the very end to recognize and that would be leadership we try to recognize them with with uh certificates throughout the year which is what we do with a lot of groups too but we also want to make sure that when we do the blue apple award that we do it across the board for everyone so they don't know who i'm gonna talk about today um purposefully the people that sit in this room that you see at every board meeting uh do a tremendous job for our district they do it quietly uh they put in tremendous amount of hours and they don't always get the recognition that you need um or that they want uh but this district couldn't function without them i've said my entire career leadership matters but in difficult times leadership matters most and the last two years have been very difficult and so the leadership that these people have exhibited over the course of the last two years is tremendous i know there were stressors for everybody whether it's parents whether it's kids teachers classified staff but if you're in a leadership position and you're trying to keep an eye out for everybody under you in your department or in your school it's twice workload and these people out here did that and just did a tremendous job and so we can only recognize two of them and so what we've decided within uh the blue apple program is to recognize one as a classified support staff and then one as uh certified uh and so with the classified support staff this is an individual that when we went ahead and started this whole culvert journey um back march of 2020 he was coming on board right around that time or a little bit after that and the way it was tackled was what do we need to do to help how do we go ahead and make sure that we provide for everyone what do we make sure what do we need to do to make sure when the federal government said everybody gets the meals how do we make that happen how do we make it happen for those kids that are not in school versus those kids that are in school where we put this program where's the best impact and then how do i stand out in the hot sun every morning and deliver the meal and not complain about it and rally the troops and make sure someone's always there so for our classified support administrator i want to call up jessica hostetter and recognize her for the certified staff um again there's a lot of things that are going on uh and i could pick any one of these um the individual that i've chosen is someone who brings a wealth of experience to the job a desire to see change positively in the district a willingness to look outside the box and take a look at things see if we can do them just a little bit different but always mindful of what it means within the budget um and how do we make change without necessarily adding more to and then how do we go ahead and and make a difference so that we make the difference that pat talked about with our kids um and has brought forth a component because we know kids have struggled with it and how do we make sure that those kids that we give them the resources a lot of people talk about uh what needs to be done but this individual was the leader that brought all the work together so when we bring the social workers and the counselors together we hire an sel coordinator this is the percent provided uh what was needed for that program uh to make sure that our kids are being met on every single level and is always willing to do whatever it takes to get that job done so far certified administration administrator i'd like to bring up dr cherry duke [Applause] very world dessert um any board members got anything nope i wanna i would like to add two things one the homes high school trap and skate team are doing their state this saturday they're shooting their state this saturday so um first time we've had state so that'll be great um second i saw the video that the black the black moods did and they released it and with our high school kids it was a really cool thing so i thought it was cool i know that they posted on their facebook page so you can look at that if you want but it was kind of cute um take a good look at the janitor at the end kind of cute so that's all i have all right let's um move to um well do we have any public comments uh um okay uh consent agenda any questions on that no questions does chad have any questions no okay so i'll take a motion for consent agenda i move to uh accept the consent agenda as presented second all in favor i i i motion carries five zero four to zero oh whatever four to zero um okay i even put four to zero i just said um 8.1 discussion consideration of approval of the new coordinate coordinator of curriculum yes we would like to go ahead and bring forward a recommendation uh as you know mr berkshire is moving to another district to advance an advancement for himself and and where he's moving within his career so we're uh replacing that position and we've had it posted uh in the course of the posting we had 12 applicants and from that list we we picked up five individuals who were interviewed uh dr fountain and and dr duplessis were part of the team along with ms middau cruz bates and uh as a coach namisha tajani they did the interviews and they went ahead and looked at resumes and took a look at what the departmental needs were and so we're very pleased to move forward with the recommendation of denise dunwoody uh for the position she was an administrator in the tempe elementary school district um and i'm sure after your your um vote she can come up and give you a little bit more of her history of where she comes from you have any questions i want to know if they told you how many questions you have to answer from us and how how often you will be up there just okay okay make it sure okay um what about chad does he have any no okay i'll take a motion i move to approve miss denise dunwoody as the new coordinator of curriculum instruction and assessment for j.o coleman second all in favor aye aye motion carries four all right uh eight point oh yeah come on up or we can just cruise right by i'm i'm on a mission if you don't i usually get this going [Laughter] i like that enthusiasm so madam president member board dr wyman thank you so much um this is an incredible opportunity something that drew me to this district is your unwavering support of success and i am beyond thrilled to be a part of the forward movement i am excited to bring outstanding educational opportunities to students here in this community um i'd like to thank my family they came in a little bit um i'd like to thank my family and my mentors who helped me get here as we all know last few years have been an incredibly scary roller coaster ride and they're they're here and everyone's bored and i'd like to thank dr fountain and the cia department for welcoming in and of everyone in this district everyone sitting in this room who i have had the pleasure of working with and meeting it's just been a great welcome and it's been such a fun and warm environment to be a part of so again i say thank you so much and i look forward to working with well welcome thank you [Applause] so then now we'll move on to eight point discussion and consideration approval of the revised 2021 food service annual financial report members of the board dr wyman members of the audience um today we're going to review the afr for last year we approved it in october but in may ade asked us to make a couple of minor changes we've not reflected this information before but we'll continue to do it going forward they asked us to reflect the usda commodities we received it was a different two hundred and eight thousand hundred and twenty six dollars we actually show it as revenue and an expense so it's a wash it has no better impact the bottom line we updated the form to also show that we did work 12 months for our food service program and then there were some minor adjustments to the meals served in section b once the numbers that we had at the end of the year there was something that was done none of the impacted our bottom line as far as the afr but they did ask us to make those changes so we'd have to bring it is there any questions yeah i'm looking at this worksheet and it's kind of tough to follow what are the things we should focus on when we look at this line six and line 17 should reflect the 208 626 dollars that we had to take in his revenue and an extent then um second item a line 12 shows that we do have word it should show item a should show 12 months and then in the section about halfway down those numbers were slightly changed for breakfast blend a la carte and snack to match what we actually reported those numbers changed slightly after those were the number of deals served yes sir and then in terms of expense impact was this the no impact no impact no impact the uh the u.s commodities has a revenue and an expense same numbers it actually just washes out all right um i'll take a motion okay i moved to approve the 2020 to 2021 revised food service annual financial revision number one report as presented a second all in favor aye aye aye motion carries four to zero 8.3 discussion consideration of approval of a combined resolution affecting county treasurer transaction for fiscal year 2223 back should have just stayed up there i don't think you're next either this is the standard report that we do every single year it merely uh reviews the it reviews the investment resolutions the warrant resolutions the warrant signature resolutions fund transfers and the list of our banks with the county office as they provide these services for us here the details out in the agenda item all the services the same contract we sign every year just to have them continue our service any other questions all right take a motion i move to approve the combined resolution with now county treasurer as presented second all in favor aye aye motion carries four to zero 8.4 discussion consideration or approval of recommendation for final payment of school-wide student achievement from proposition 301 performance pay plan 21 22.

aldrin aldrin something like that's his name he contacted me a couple of years ago and i was subpoenaed to give a deposition in phoenix and our lawyer was president to make sure i didn't make a mistake and then we had arizona center for lone public interest president uh ben ben hufford and three or four assistants ascended ascendancy sedimentary general and they did a deposition on what is happening not happening with sfb and it wasn't as bad then as it is now one of the things i talked about was our rock wall i think if i tore that down my crew would have been ten years ago a week after i tore it down because it's coming it's a it's it's a symbol of town but the school was built during donna reedura's inherit days and this building is kind of designed for that back in those days we never thought that anybody would attack us and kill children so i was in a law conference last year and this our wall our rock wall out here was part of the presentation and my statement's been that we could drive a vw glass bus or a tank through that wall we couldn't stop um so this article talks about that in terms of not just about us but talks about the fact that uh rural schools have a hard time passing especially hard time passing financial elections things that we've done i hope you understand the three-wing building we took the windows out rigged them up and put solid rock solid glass blocks so those buildings are pretty safe we also put we changed the locks about two or three years ago it's about 200 door so they never unlock you get in they're always locked so people sometimes stick a piece of paper and watch the painting connect we'll go by and pull the paper out because that way people can't get in i had jose got peepholes so if someone not you want to check it out you can do that first the primary canvas was built in 1995 and i'm not i'm not trying to make disparaging comments about my predecessors but it's kind of like a fancy machine shed with sheetrock it's a metal building an insulation and sheetrock and it's not thick metal and so we got a grand viewers because it's starting to rust off and we've all new sightings all new doors all moving into this little painting um windows but it's still not as secure in my opinion as it needs to be and um i talked about that and so the lawsuit looks like it's going to look good for schools because the lawsuit's about state things are happening in the state that are not they're not living in what the courts told them so anyway take a look at that i hope that i didn't write the letters like i told the board and i apologize that i've just been busy but i think maybe the heart the article was wrong and i think maybe it may have some clout i hope i've heard from a couple people going hey dooley you're on the front line well that's not what i want i want to keep our kids safe um let's see um [Music] i wrote these down today or not folks i i want to thank the board for the wrench and the speech and the plaque i love these will hang together somewhere right and my kids are going to do that with my mind when i'm gone but and i and i appreciate the support of the community and kids and a lot of good teachers and boards i've i figured i've worked with about 18 board members and miss duncan listed a few people with loss i think i counted six or seven we lost but the last the last three years i've been very tough all around excuse me with a lot of people that we've worked with and some of those people you know we never saw always see eye to eye but some of the most important people in the world to continue i totally we had good discussions so i appreciate that support i'm glad i had the opportunity i spent 27 percent of my life here and or more i didn't count to two years that's just to 20 years and so i wanted this place to be successful and our kids deserve i get real angry fast uh none of you noticed that but when i think that our kids aren't getting the same breaks that kids and prosperous urban schools are getting not all kids in urban schools are getting roosevelt kids didn't get it and so i just think that's wrong i am i appreciate the forward support and help i hope that the groups that helped me parents and the kids teachers at the board also support dr zotero he and i have become supporting clinic this week and we probably talk more than he or i have time for but i think philosophies and things like that were pretty similar on what we believe about kids about schools about education i've enjoyed my time here so thank you maybe i should retire two years ago dr joyce uh uh please before you leave today assign them the buggy thing and because we need all thank you wow [Music] personnel for the 2022-23 school year was the superintendent's recommendation that the board employed bernie as a teacher for the 22-23 school benjamin is a certified deployment teacher maria fernandez here's your as a teacher here uh next one is the certified development teacher christopher conwells christian gonzalez has been interviewed that reference checks concluded from the position as a teacher school year the superintendent makes his recommendation that for the employment of christopher gonzalez as a teacher from the 2020 next item is the approval for extended employment for mercy erin cohen casey during the substitute work much of mercy on mr casey's extended year of work was unable to be done in the traditional five days of their contract extension the administration is asking for an additional five days to allow for completion of the necessary work this is to be done by july 15 one reason i put that data in there that's when they come back obviously but that way if if lance needs him for two days this week and one day next week and two days of fun we can just then maybe give some types of collections mr optics right mr curtis during the additional work requirements during the 21-22 school recorded here and the administration is asking the doctor comedy and this exam on the old the extent of the amount of extra days added to their contract if approved dr conley will confidence work on july june 13th for a 40-hour work week and this will work the maximum of 29 hours per day and one question i thought to come to work i think the 15th of july 29 hours for miss leon that's the typical length of the uh next item is the approval for summer school employment for paraprofessional and teachers aids teacher employment for the middle school and high school during june was approved by the board of the may 11th board meeting a number of one-on-one sped students will be attending james summer school and main pair professionals to attend the following days over five dollars per day after the normal rate of day from june 6th to the 9th through june 13th 16th with samuel hernandez debbie house rafaela brown and sherry simpson the superintendent's recommendation is the hiring of the healthcare professionals to work during the summer school of june 69th to june passes the following employees have expressed a desire to perform the designated veterans paid positions for the 22-23 school year with kelly harrington as his fed director jose viacenor as the english language director and doc seen as head basketball coach mr president this year can i speak a little bit about these streaks i feel pretty fortunate to have these people a part of our organization mr sane contact me today he uh wanted to know when he can start talking to the players i said we haven't been hired yet i said is that what happens tonight he's oh cool i said all right i'll text you tonight or tomorrow morning he wants to start summer program with kids and he's got a lot of experience he's been pretty successful so i hope he's successful here i feel good about him as an employee i told dr zotero we've hired some decent people i think i hope and i may have to find a reason to come to iowa see my buddy mario or something and drive by some classrooms i'll sign the school office because i love it i'd love to see some of these people working that's one of them jose and sevilla senior i spoke about a little bit the other night jose is a young teacher he's been here about four years he is really good support good respect for kids he's bilingual but he can't teach him spanish but he understands the ell needs the kids to open charlie erin khan is kind of like she's a very silent person but she has some jobs she has a master's in education she has two master's degrees one's in english is the second language now it's a special ed so she's highly qualified to be a teacher four years when she's in the philippines she started special ed program in secondary school special ed is not required in secondary school if it's been told to me by several people so i assume it's accurate only in decay so that she thought it was necessary the school of social leadership so she did that she was voted by some it's called uh phil m filipino american education association uh several years ago the outstanding and what an outstanding special ed teacher in the united states philippine education so i think we're very lucky to have her and i think all three are going to do well and i'm with the turnover and special ed this year it's really imperative to have i believe some of the consistency and keep one of this existing staff here so i feel good about the facts second mr hopkins yes it's not this is not necessary because she would roof her cats in this morning so it's unfortunate she was a strong cat i'd love to watch this lady work she's the one who mentioned monday night that had been teaching in australia for 13 years and she she was a college professor she has three master's degrees she and dr lamontagne were colleagues at the university of um and so i hate to see her go [Music] the administration is prepared to propose the 20 2023 fiscal budget for board review proposed budget is being recommended for approval and the administration is asking permission to advertise the superintendent recommends that the board approve the usda proposed fiscal year 23 budget expenditure budget and allow the administration permission to privatize the budget as per mr hopkins classified staff representatives have made small changes to the classified conference the committee has worked on this document during the spring of three days too the superintendent recommends the ratification of the classified staff we believe we made all the changes there's a couple of minor changes yesterday and the maternity leave we took 16 hours out and put in 12 weeks so i'll second miss duncan aye mr president i'm mr hopkins i'm mr robertson all right promotion past exposure okay the next business intergovernmental agreement with the joint technical education district annually the pima county j-10 and its satellite and milwaukee unified scholarship agreed to an intergovernmental agreement that we approve the attacks by today ms duncan aye mr hawkins aye ms robertson hi and mrs passes forward the next item is the intergovernmental agreement pima community college dual pool in 2018 2020 the auto unified school district entered into an agreement with pima community college for dual enrollment classes for high school students classes will be held on auto school's campus and video into a classroom non-payment community colleges campus successful students will receive high school and college credit the superintendent recommends the approval of the attached iga between amsd and pewdiepie college i want to make that motion hopkins aye ms duncan aye ms robertson aye mr president also i'm motion passes to help foreign district guarantee checks and balances on our accounts will be the national bank of arizona a request is being made a recommendation from the auditor for the board to approve a change in the signers during aws accounts these recommended signers are rolling saltera master bullets and venus the superintendent recommends that both signers be approved for all amsd bank accounts with the national bank president taxes last item of business is the approval of governing board workshop with password as part of the package the district paid for with regards to the superintendent search training for the new superintendent and the governing board is available free of charge nikki whaley has been in contact with mr hopkins and has offered two trainings one is the team member style and one is board operations and communication protocol board needs to discuss and vote on the following how many of the trainings how many trainings the ahoy university and superintendent would like to attend one or both if just one which one how will the training be administered by its name or face-to-face [Music] as part of the package deal when we hire doctor we get one of these trainings for free if we choose both of them we're paying three hundred dollars from the second one and if we zoom we don't pay any travel but she comes to town for better transportation and will most likely pay for her to have a hotel presentation so that's got it i didn't want to make those decisions i think [Music] for me my thinking i'm thinking the board operations communication critical would be the more more helpful more necessary definitely and she did say that this would be a three-hour session so it was actually a special session and she is not available on thursdays so i told her i said well i think most likely monday or wednesday because those of us are on the board already blocked off wednesdays so um yeah we're shooting for july because july was open she's pretty booked in june july was wide open but she said with the number of new superintendents in this state that she expects july to fill up pretty quickly so i'd like to be able to call her in the next couple of days and give her the details yeah not before far away we're gonna have board meetings already the 11th and the 13th yeah i'm just saying the regular board meetings because we're not going to have any of the week or fourth of july right now 13.

so every year you guys approve the plan that teachers will use uh and then they work on that plan throughout the course of the year uh and then at this point in time uh after their evaluations are done and all the work has been uh completed the administration goes ahead and make sure that it's uploaded those that have completed everything and if they've met all of their requirements and this year you'll see there's four components to the performance pay plan evaluation which is 33 professional development 25 parent communication 17 professional investment 25 you do not see letter grades uh if you recall back in the in the fall uh when we approved the plan we had to take the letter grade component out because the state was not used letter grades this year therefore another staff could earn those uh in the performance pay plan they uh able to receive up to four thousand dollars that four thousand is divided out based on the percentage of the four areas and so if somebody did not complete a specific area then they would not have received the four percent or if they uh didn't receive at least an effective rating and evaluation they would have received less so i would recommend approval uh the individuals are noted on on the attachment and that's just the result of again legal counsel recommendation that we provide specific dollar amounts for the board to know who's getting paid what the payment will actually go out on the june 24th payment uh with with vouchers so i'd recommend approval any questions all right motion okay i moved to approve the final payment of school-wide student achievement portion of the proposition 301 performance-based pay plan for the 2021-22 school year as presented second all in favor aye aye motion carries 4-0 okay 8.5 discussion consideration of new course approvals cms coding over the last year or so you have approved our work with techsmart to look at coding courses and it's work that eventually we eventually like to get four through 12 right now we have an agreement with evit in terms of how we provide the coding course for the high school and uh we're doing it at the middle school and we did coding one but we want to make sure we included coding two uh as part of that program uh we're continuing to talk with them about the lower grades and so this is just to clean up to make sure that we have voting too if there's specifics uh mr scroggin talk about it but it's pretty straightforward it's just a continuation of what we're already doing so is this like yeah you're going to get questions no you don't have to i can hear you from there but he would but his back's killing him no don't if your back's killing you stay there um so this when they finish this is this equivalent to high school um things or no high school courses okay okay and we're looking at a 412 program just because as we talk about the elliott road corridor and some of the new developments that are coming out here we start taking a look at coding as one of the hot job markets out there uh you can step out of a 18-month program after high school uh into an 85 000 a year job in coding and so it's just something to expose kids to what's the possible potential of what can be done uh and since there's a ton of uh high-tech stuff that's taking place out in this part of the valley uh we just believe it's something that over the long run will be good for kids to get interest in and possibly pursue on down the road as a square how many did you have in coding one like two to need a coating too you see what i'm saying like oh laura now so you had a coding one if you need a coating too how many are going from coating one to coating two right oh nice nice good right very very limited yes no that's great okay that's great and i have a question do we have a teacher for this class good okay that's important i think it's great any other questions okay i'll take a motion i move to approve the combs middle school new course offering of coding 2 for the 2022-2023 school year as presented a second all in favor aye aye aye motion carry support is zero we have 8.6 discussion consideration do not allow online charter school students to try out for interscholastic athletics and activities as defined and supported by the aia this is an annual thing we bring forward to the board of the situation we have it's it really kind of confuses online kids and what school you're in with online uh versus aia which is who's eligible to actually play sports and so kids can take whatever online class they want they don't have to be enrolled in our program that's a choice issue all right before when we did not have an online program you would say yeah they could play in our sports because the law allows for them to to be enrolled in an online program and play sports at local school since we now have an online program what we'd say is well then that you become part of our online program then you can go ahead and play sports uh to be home uh to be online with a different entity and then just come and play our sports you pay your two hundred dollars uh or whatever the the going rate is for pay to play uh that doesn't cover the cost of the program uh and so in this case we're saying you come get uh your education with us and we'll let you play sports yeah with us and so this is what we've done for three years now and so i just recommend approval as presented um i'm definitely in favor of this but i think i last year when this came up i said the same thing and we were reworded so it's not two negatives just because you know we're trying to teach english and we're violating the rule here with two negatives not allow students not attending if we could just reword it so it's a more positive fashion for the next time is presented don't worry about it for tonight i think it would be a little bit better i've given me a hard time i do think i remember you saying that too okay is it you have anything else no that's it okay i'll take a motion i will read the motion as presented i move to not allow students do you feel i need to do this to not allow students not attending the district online school for participating in districts into scholastic athletics and activities as defined and supported by the ai hi second all in favor aye aye aye aye motion carries four to zero way to be a sport okay um discussion and consideration are approved by iga between uh joe combs unified school district and maricopa community college for dual enrollment this is just a continuation of what we've done in the past this is the program that is for the uh athletic training program uh cac does not have that program uh therefore we we're allowed by law to go out to a neighboring junior college community college to to put the program in so that it can be a concurrent enrollment program and so we are working with uh chandler gilbert if i'm correct and it allows the kids to get both college and high school credit and so we just need to do an annual approval of this program questions okay i'll take a motion well i move to approve the iga between the j.l combs unified school district and the maricopa community colleges for dual enrollment for 2022-2023 as presented a second all in favor hi motion carries four to zero where we're at um 8.8 discussion and consideration approval of changes in the policy gcd professional staff vacations and holidays second reading yeah so this is a second reading of the staff vacation and this is for the administrators last year you asked me to come up with different ideas and ways that we could benefit administrators as we uh struggle with financial issues and so and talking with what occurs in other districts one of the ideas is to give administrative days those administrative days would be days that they would use first prior to using sick or personal days uh they would get seven a year they must use them in the year if they choose not to use them then they'd lose them so it's not anything to roll over there's nothing in this particular policy that would allow them to to get paid for those but there will be a cost associated because depending on what their years like they may not use up all their vacations and if those days rolled and at the end of their time in the district they would get paid for that but it's just a little bit of a perk again to thank them for everything they do because we can't always do that with pay scales so i would recommend approval as presented any questions all right promotion hey i moved to approve recommended changes to district policy gcd professional vacations and holidays as presented i second all in favor aye aye aye motion carries [Laughter] i think we should reconsider after that scare me they scare me okay um 8.9 discussion and consideration approval of uh igas with with with between um the east valley institute of technology and the j.o comes unified school district okay that's the way it's going to work tonight i can see that's fine um this is uh all the attorneys uh representing the different uh school districts uh that are that are part of evit and the evid attorney have just been looking at some minor modifications to the um to the two different uh igas that we have the first iga is the overall iga that that factors in how we work with them and what the pay is and and and how we deal with satellite campuses and campuses or classes on on their main campus either the one out here on power or the one downtown and the second one just addresses some issues relative to special education students uh if you recall i think it was a year ago but it might have been two years ago there was on audit and there were some concerns about some of the special education uh protocols that were being used relative to working with those students that were part of uh eve it and so this is the second agreement that i think is the second year in place i listed the different um there are the changes that the attorneys made um as for the most part they are beneficial um to the districts uh and an import a portion of that is uh quite frankly related to um how they distribute the money and what's needed for evit to run their programs and so i think it's in our benefits with these changes and it's positive there are also some modifications with whose responsibility for transportation there are some issues with transportation because the further kids have to travel the harder it is within their schedule and so this has gone back and forth several times but i think everything that's in here is something that we can support uh relative to the main agreement and then the sped agreement had real minor changes that were not necessarily significant per se um but it was tied to the audit and so it's not something that that it's tied to law into the audit so i'd recommend approval as president i do have a question in terms of is there any financial impact to our district as a result of this new agreement it would be a positive uh impact over time because you can see the percentage of the satellite funding to the home districts where the home districts coming from evit will now increase one percent over the next over years two and three so ultimately that will be more money uh towards us um and there's also additional assistance attributed to the satellite adm that will be paid to the home district and it's gonna increase from 50 to 100 i don't know the exact dollar amounts for what that is but in both those cases those are benefits to us and would allow us to to potentially uh expand or fix up uh additional dollars for our programs that we offer at high school not not at the eva campuses any other questions okay i i moved to approve the three-year iga between the east valley institute of technology and the j.o combs unified school district as presented my second all in favor motion carries four to zero okay so this is where we're going to skip what we're going to move to nine right right um 9.1 and then we have um discussion and information madam president board members dr wyman and of course all her colleague audience i was asked to present information regarding our homes uh performing arts center our attack of which i'll do tonight i'd like to recognize mrs corey lee our cpac director here this evening uh she'll help us with any specific questions but our intention is to quickly show you the year in review and then also share with you a little bit of what's going on 2023 um so we've done is we've given you some yearly uh comparisons obviously uh with 2021 we had over that we were dealing with so you can see that the numbers dropped off a little bit there but we bounced back this year when you look at the capacity uh increasing and then the number of uh school and district events rentals total events and revenue you can see that bill we were building back up this year moving forward to 2223 you can see that we have a full array of events going on and i'll share a little bit more of that with you total revenue will probably be higher than that there because we picked up a couple other events just recently as of um so um we'll add that to the presentation the next time we just as um you can see the the total number of uh rental client began in 2021 and then moved forward some have come some have paid we've added so some of the events that i'd like to kind of touch upon that many of you here in the audience as well as board members came to are some of the following pad management continues to be a great client of ours and they bring forth some great opportunities in particular the garth live went very well and that was a an event that was talked about uh this event also is one of our larger events of here nutcracker of course uh was a great event you heard great vibes our theater program our high school drama program continues to put on great events the most recent was beauty and the beast but of course center stage academy continues to put on events with us as well and the summer camp showcases july as well so you'll hear more about that for social media middle school was active this year in the cpac tennessee pictures event the date very proud of the middle school and how they're utilizing the cpac we also put on the arizona cinderella pageant and showcase that members of our communities and young ladies in that program we also are bringing in music promoters um the shine on floyd has been a great void event but brought up a lot of great buzz in the community which has been wonderful we also put on the inferno dance competition which was an award-winning dance competition for our students as well as the community and that garnished some great awards there with our staff the high school is utilizing the cpac for their events and so a little bit about what's coming up in 2223 following a parent university will be taking place and topics will be brought up and discussed there for that coming up right now currently is the summer uh camp showcase performances see those dates it is free admission we're very proud of middle school orchestra and band concerts are scheduled again those are all free admission events which amazing for the high school dates are set as well lloyd pink floyd is back and we're excited about that high school middle school choir concert are scheduled we have curtin call theater coming back with clue builder great opportunities center stage academy will be coming back with some great additions musicals our high school orchestra and guitar concerts are scheduled bringing back arizona cinderella again also back scholarships that are involved in that for the community excite for music nutcrackers coming back about that dance concert and of course our holiday shows exciting overall we're really proud of the work that's going on in the cpac this is an important part of our community that was needed for this community and it's being utilized full schedule throughout the year and corey lee is very active in regards to the recruitment of that of course we're moving forward question um i have a well first i want to say i've been to the uh cpac for two shows one was the journey tribute and i just can't remember what the other one was and the uh the sound there is incredible so i'm really happy about that um there are a couple of concerns i do have um one has to do with publicity um when i talk about that to people in the community in which i live they know nothing about it so i'm concerned about how the word is getting out that we even have a performing arts center and then the shows that are available um the one time i went to our website i went on google and did a google search and it said j.o combs performing arts center i clicked on it and it took us to our homes district home page had nothing to do with the cpac so the the publicity and the communication and getting the word out i find to be difficult um the other thing is buying tickets i find to be difficult because you have to go to i think it's i'm not sure if it's facebook i don't remember how i did it but trying to get tickets was a problem as well so i'm finding some of those uh more administrative type things to be a little bit hard to navigate uh the last thing is um right now it's general admission and i'm wondering are we gonna go to a situation where we will have reserve seats yeah so for the first point of publicity i think we we can do a better job of that moving forward and we'll continue to work with our social media and of course kayla's team for that i think that that's something an area that we need to improve on um in regards to tickets i i do believe that we're going to have to do that eventually as as the popularity of this in the community and as our community continues to grow and i think that the cpac is an amazing it was an amazing opportunity for this district and will be an amazing opportunity and we don't utilize it enough to promote our schools as well and that's an area of concern that i have and you work with cory and first so along with the website and the connection point fixing that up a bit i believe well and i appreciate that and i'm just wondering it would be possible just to have corey come up here and say a few words if we're not putting her on the spot absolutely corey would you like so very quickly to just to address your concern to about the reserve seating we're actually working on that as right now um since we've general admission was just another way to get us started and up running so now that we've got the x platform that we're working with for at least our events here within district we're actually uploading a seating chart and so we're looking forward to having reserve seating at least for our musicals and our plays depending on what the instructors at least and so um as for social media um i do manage the cpac page and we do have a web page in our district a little buried but i do maintain that and we do have that so i appreciate your feedback and your comments and have any other questions oh i have one question the tad management system is that when i when i read that it do we pay them do do you pay them no we don't okay they are actually um other than our shows that we produce in-house such as our drama our high school middle school drama programs our music program these are all renters that are okay so they're producing revenue now um to bring up your concern about the ticketing right now all of our renters come in with their own so we i explored the opportunity um when we first opened with the business office um about maybe being a pass-through and we decided that that at the time that that was probably not the best idea as we were getting started and becoming a pass through because it becomes additional burden on the business office now as we grow and we're increasing events this might be something we're going to need to revisit so we have one centralized location but it does pose some additional concerns for money passed through possible audit issues and everything else and so we're award-winning on our audits we don't want to mess that up we want to continue congratulations so we want to make sure that we are doing everything on the up and up and really researching any possible method i do talk to other performing arts center directors to see how they approach that as well including queen creek higley and the maps and have we run into any problems issues that you can share with us from any of the performances that have occurred what kind of issues well i think production issues lighting sound uh people some of the performers not being happy i don't know just anything we you know that's par for the course for any production sometimes sometimes like our technology here works great and then other days we it's just not there so we do run into that occasionally and we do find ways around it we're also very good about using our cte students and our stage production classes so they get the opportunity to come in and work with these professionals so like tab management comes in they bring a sound engineer and we have students following around the sound engineers learning how to troubleshoot this stuff on the fly so and learning how to patch in lights and run lights so our students get the opportunity to run professional shows so they also learn to troubleshoot a lot of our technology issues or bugs that may come up um even mid show that they're cause it happens we know what happens in any production so right now some of our concerns are um we're trying to recruit volunteers and we're struggling to recruit volunteers we'd like to see some more community volunteers come in and work as ushers um we were starting to build that pool we were working within quintara ovid hit and people weren't really excited to come back yet from that community we're hoping that'll change this year so we're actively recruiting there as well any other questions thank you for letting me put you on the spot my pleasure i appreciate that thank you for allowing us to present tonight no problem okay so now we have uh a 9.2 the footsteps to brilliance thank you i'll go ahead and run through this presentation alfre elfida's on vacation so i'm in charge and if there's a typo yes i typed it up so just put that out right in the beginning are we gonna find them i don't know i look at them three four five times but yeah you know they seem to slip in okay just a couple things we want to do with this quick presentation is just give a little bit of an update on the progress of footsteps of brilliance it nes hasn't necessarily moved the way we had anticipated when we first came on on board but we do have uh what we thought was a phase one or what we have is a phase one which did not take off as as well as we like but we are moving to phase two which we think is going to have uh uh greater impact and and some of it is out of our control if if you remember uh over winter of 19 and and uh the early part of spring at 20 was when we went through the agreements and what hit in spring of 20 was cobot and so our initial plan with this program from the get-go was to take a look at running it through the community and putting it out to the community as a program to help with reading and we were looking at focusing on three three-year-olds through five-year-olds we had made a conscious decision not to move it into the schools initially because of some of the other programs that we were putting on board that year it was a synergy issue coming on board we also knew we were in the middle of a selection of changing from galileo to illuminate and we just felt with everything on on teachers plates we would start in the community uh based on our conversations with the um with footsteps to brilliance and the strategies to put it in the community uh we felt that that would be a a good first step we did get approval for a general licensing fee or contract we paid over five years um and this it did allow us to pay it off early we weren't necessarily thinking that way when essers came along what the reason we came forward with that program when we did was because of we were the last license that was in perpetuity so once we paid it off it's now ours so there's not an annual fee so this is not a case like other districts if they want to keep the program they keep paying and paying and paying this was a case where we would get a license in perpetuity and so we felt that was beneficial esther's dollars came along as part of the covet funding and we just felt that was a good way to pay off that bill because it's a one-time bill uh we weren't going to have a reoccurring cost after the five years anyway and then that way we didn't touch the m o portion of the budget to pay for this and so so that's what we uh that's what we did uh and so we now own the program and we can use it as the best our ability uh probably one of the biggest issues uh let me back up but again for those that might not be aware especially if you're online it is a literacy software program uh and it was uh utilizes a variety of different um modalities to to to use it can be your phone could be an ipad it could be a chromebook um it is in english and spanish so those families that may have had difficulty uh in terms of kids reading uh if spanish is their primary home language we felt this was a good program that would that would help with that we were looking to improve reading and vocabulary skills um and so that was the the the intention um a thousand books available songs and games uh seeing good results from our research-based practices in various communities again as with most programs it's dependent upon the community and how the community embraces or doesn't embrace a particular uh program and that'll be really in important for us um as we take a look at it uh what happened and and and the gist of phase one was we thought we'd move out into uh our um our day cares and uh they weren't quite as excited and energized by a supplemental program coming into what they were doing and so we reached out to 15 different daycare programs a couple showed some interest but then backed away some were not interested because of what the way they were offering the programs that they were offering within their own program and so that was a little bit surprising and then again due to covid um it wasn't quite as easy to get in talk with with individuals that's why we did have elfita uh re-engage them again this year and we got very similar response this year as we did last year and so we're trying a different tactic as we move into into phase two and so what we're looking at is is focusing on our district young coyotes and kinder prep kids uh kids that are in our system uh and then we're also uh reaching out to the inbound kindergarten families um this is all starting up this summer so we don't don't have the specific numbers or how well it's going at this point in time and then we marketed it to our k3 students as just a summer school type program uh just to help out with learning loss we are going to look to expand over the next year um uh next couple years once we see how some of these go well i'm sure we'll continue to reach out to uh the various day cares but again those are independent contractors and so therefore they do what they want to do and and even though we thought this would be something that would be beneficial uh for a variety of different reasons they they may not see the same benefit that we see we're working with head start too we've we've had some outreach to pinal county in general but part of the problem is it's it's limited to our zip code and so as we work with pinal county and some of the different entities and agencies in pinella county it is still limited to our zip code we can't go into florence and and just automatically sell the stuff there and so there are some limitations and and again just uh like with everything there's a ton of software out there and depending on who you are you you may or may not uh like what we're doing or you may or like better what you're doing and therefore you're not interested in our program so didn't quite kick off as well as we liked but we believe this next phase uh will generate more uh a better result and then we'll continue to build on that um this just talks about uh the what we did this uh uh with the marketing outreach and you can see that the the three apps that we're really focusing on pre-reader i can read in footsteps to brilliance so it hits all the different uh areas for the the kids uh based on their age uh and again the the key component is it can be on uh any number of different platforms uh and because it's in english and spanish it can help out kids throughout the community and so we're just going to continue to reach out um if there's other ways for us to reach out we will but like i say we we assume the day cares would be more enthusiastic than than they have appeared to be and so we're going to have to strategize differently so questions um back when we first signed up for this i remember i was having difficulty i was trying to register two of my three grandkids and then we had a presentation i remember the gentleman's name who came and explained how you get in and log in so i did all of that for for two of my three grandkids and yet i still find the program a little hard to navigate so i don't find it um intuitive like some other programs educational programs that i've i've used in the past um so if we're going to do it i think we need some more um instruction on how to use it appropriately how to navigate and then when i a little bit i do understand when i try to introduce it to my two grandkids um they seem to not be interested so maybe it's because i don't have the knowledge to show them what to do or i didn't explain it right but i just find it if i'm having difficulty and i'm trying actively to learn to use it i would think maybe others are having difficulty as well and we will work with footsteps one of the issues that came up obviously with covid was uh when we had our discussions prior to them coming in was the notion of the amount of work that they would do coming in to meet with our uh with our community just like they did in other communities well obviously with covet uh that next a whole bunch of that meeting nobody was comfortable with we weren't allowing visitors on our campus and so was we moved forward and and things loosen up we will go ahead and take a look at can we get footsteps back in normally they have a night where they work with the families they help them sign up they help them explain what the program is and they do a whole a whole event we just haven't been able to do that due to covet and so we're looking at a at a different workaround but we will reach out to them and see about the notion or the ability for them to come in and provide some more services uh to help families that may be struggling and we'll also reach out to those families that we have that do sign up and uh check to see uh are we having are they having difficulties what are the difficulties and see if we can come up with ways to to maybe get out a fact sheet or something like that that that just helps people with it and footsteps of brilliance may have a a pre a pre-done fact sheet or something like that yeah to navigate so i will reach out to them and then when we offer this to other day cares like i mentioned earlier is that cost to those daycares it's not a cost but the issue that comes up one of the major issues that comes up is is you have to create a class roster for the kids and so then you start to get into uh so in some cases they were not they didn't they had their own program in other cases there was some concerns both uh on all ends about how does this roster get created and what kind of information is in there again it seems to be depending on your community the flow of information it seems to work better in some communities than others i know looking at several communities in in the san francisco bay area have been been very successful with this and i'm not sure why they why the exchange is the way it is with the class rostering but in our case we had several that that did not feel comfortable on that part others just didn't feel comfortable with the curriculum so that has been a barrier uh it's it's something that we have to work on but it but there has to be a way to track who's in the program and how is the success taking place in terms of kids becoming better readers and so we have to work to overcome that piece for those that are maybe hesitant in that area i have some questions so in our district who is like who who is in charge of this it's it comes out of cia and right now it's alfita is is who our key person has been that's been reaching out uh in this particular phase two um uh marcus and elfita worked with marketing uh uh kayla and her department to figure out how do we get the how to get the word out but it ultimately uh falls with within cia and uh uh marcus and elfita okay so i just have a couple like maybe suggestions i don't know um any way that it could be brought up during parent university yes it could be i mean again um we this was our our outreach for this summer then we're going to come back and talk about next year again with the change in the way that uh covet is and and we're moving away from cobit the notion of having somebody available now are they going to be available to each site each night well that might be a little i don't know that they have those resources maybe they do but we can definitely look into it as for parent university and or for open houses or other nights that that that we may have a community coming up maybe like local food programs if they have flyers especially in the summer time if they're doing summer school i don't know if that if that if that would work i don't know if the fact that you have to have a class roster i don't know well that's where i'm a little confused because he can log have a class roster so why is it that a daycare because you have a collective group of large group of kids i don't know all the specifics to it i just know that there's there's an issue there that if you're going in to try to get that group of kids versus individual parents that are signing up because you're going to come because then as an example part of this issue becomes how do we track the actual data and if we know we have uh 30 kids out of a particular day care and another 30 kids out of a different day care you may want to be looking and we'll use head start looking at the relative merits of how this is helping those kids with reading if i have an individual person come in and become slightly different situation because it may be just supplemental what they would normally do with their children but when we sit here and have a defined program where they're going to want to collect the data to see how well the kids are doing and what the what the return rate is you can get the individual data from from those but not in the same way that you would try to pull for uh for a whole uh a whole group of kids in a daycare setting and so that's what they've asked for that that information and i'm gonna assume that because we own it that when he logs on then we have his information regardless we own the like we own the perpetual licensing right you're still working through the the company so if i said there was a thousand uh books and and songs and games well if it becomes 2000 it's not like we're housed in the 2000s so there's still a relationship with with the company that that they're having to make sure that they're going to push out the information we're not pushing out any anything in terms of the back end right i'll work with all that but when it comes to tracking or looking at what is this progress um do we have access to a portal of some sort we have we have 25 people in the meadows have signed into this or yes we have access to the information that tells which groups are doing well um where they're getting access from when it goes into our classrooms which is one of the phase two phase three we would have access to that same information and so currently we would be able to easily know how many people are utilizing at this point yeah yeah i don't have that in front of me yeah i didn't think you did but wondering um so when you say we have a relationship with that so we own the licensing but do we still have to pay them no what we've paid off we've paid it off that's where it's about anything no that's where it's perpetual that was one of the deals for why we chose to to move forward with him with them is that the research based and showing what the results were but then also as we took the perpetual license we knew once we paid it off we get continual updates continue advances in the program but we're not going to have to pay anything else it just worked out even better that we had the esters dollars so in this case it had no impact on the mno budget uh because we were able to cover it so any updates as part of the the contractual agreement with them we would get access to all of that stuff so it's a relationship [Laughter] um okay any other questions i would be interested to know like how many people are actually using it like the actual data we will we will get that data and take a look all right then um i stay here i'm gonna yeah i'm gonna make a motion to go into executive session okay all right all in favor aye aye motion carries at what time at 7 27.

i think that's pretty good it a dollar to keep it six all right go ahead and call the meeting to order thanks for everybody for being here for a special meeting i'll start with the approval of the agenda um by rogers second by tamra paul february passes and more discussion uh superintendent discussion with garrison chris thank you very much uh i'd like to go over the survey i got good news you had 181 respondents to your survey so for the quick turnaround that you have i'd say that was fantastic so congratulations to your communities on that pass those out and jane i think there's enough for you so with that said i'd like to review the uh respondent or the responses from the uh if you have it in your hands you can see that of the 181 almost 30 percent of them identify as a community member 27 percent as a parent or a guardian of a student which obviously means they're community members but a little bit more specific an employee with the district almost 20 percent an employee would be not a teacher because you can see teacher has a different a separate category so an employee would be your classified staff members teachers you had 18 percent uh it was nice to see you had nine students that took the time to respond to this and one of your administrators within the district responded the second question or the second page which is on the back uh this is simply how long you've been associated with the school district and or your community as you can see 49 percent have been in your community or your district 20 plus years i've done dozens upon dozens of these surveys that's always the number one response the so those that are in your community i'm just this is kind of conjecture but have the most interest so they obviously want to make sure their voices are heard with four to ten years you can see almost 23 11 to 20 19 percent one two three seven and less than a year that makes sense that they're uh probably not vested in your community quite as much when they're less so you can see we have less responses so getting into the brass tacks if you look at question three and you can see that is happens to be on page three of 11.

hernandez um and you know some of the similar sentiments of i'm really it comes across of your humility um and that's something that i appreciate uh because that i think that translates into a connection with children and families and for people to you know give you the nickname of el wapo which is obviously very accurate um as we see you here tonight but you know that just that you're at six o'clock you're in your classroom it looks like unless you're taking your teaching home too which i'm sure you are doing that as well but you know i think just all those things if in my mind if i add those things up one plus one equals two and it shows that your um you know your dedication your connection and your uh your humility is really makes you deserving of this so congratulations and and thank you for all you do oh and the last thing i was going to say is those things that connectedness if you think about those 26 years all the lives that have been impacted by that is just you teacher of the year uh 26 years of the milestone in in any career uh you know better than 25th anniversary uh but that that speaks volumes of your commitment to the uh to your school and the allen rock union elementary school district uh and also you know just to reflect and it also reflects on how well you're able to to work with others uh education is many times a team effort and you know it's not just you in the classroom but it's also your uh your ability to relate professionally with your colleagues as well as declassified staff so uh with that you know ask someone who had the privilege of visiting cassell in the past year uh i i once again congratulations on your award uh you know uh you know there's only one more day in the school year left so and enjoy the last day of for your services around this we'll be moving on to the next item on the agenda thank you everybody all right uh moving outside of three points okay i've got my agendas 2.01 i want to make sure i'm not missing anything uh presentation approval of the ar usd strategic plan um dr barry do you have the plan you want to introduce the item yes i'd like to introduce to you well you already know aaron uh but to the audience um the the wonderful team that it will be presenting to you tonight um this is a very uh exciting and historical moment in uh alum rock moving forward for the next 90 years so we probably won't be here but i think we're laying the foundation and i really am very grateful that aaron price from the glenn price group has been our facilitator for about a year already aaron it's just been quite a journey and thank you so much for being with us uh the team it was an amazing group of people we had about 17 different stakeholders and they were very responsible lawyer attendees and you have a group of them presenting to you tonight miss sandra rivera um teacher at cesar chavez miss sandra pinal she is representing parents and becky mcguire also representing parents i think we have the janitors representing non-profit and uh partnerships in alam rock and i think yadida was going to be joining us as well tonight and she's representing teamsters um the student who was participating uh had her graduation tonight and she was not able to be with us but she sent a letter and so i'm gonna turn it over to aaron from here thank you dr bauer um thanks for that introduction of the presentation team and and thank you to the um board of trustees for for making some time on your agenda uh today to to hear this presentation we're going to provide a pretty concise uh presentation of the work that really this core planning team has done building on discovery work last last year and and some of the conversations that uh that the board had i'm gonna go ahead and share my uh screen here to present some slides to to you all that a little bit bigger here so just to quickly recap um the process and maybe one more introductory note that we're intending to give a brief presentation and then really open it up to hear your questions your comments on on this this draft of the of the plan your reactions um and we have a great team here tonight to uh to help field those those questions and share their experiences from participating in this in this work over the last several months so just a little bit of a zoomed out view here of the three phases of work that have really led us up to this point starting with discovery work back in in 2021 and engaging different perspectives different stakeholder voices through interviews through listening sessions looking at existing reports and data and putting together a summary of that of that work in a discovery report that we then brought back and shared with with you all uh moving into 2022 there was the formation of a core planning team and as dr bauer mentioned a great group of about 17 people representing different different groups um different interests across the the district and across the community that team really worked to first set in north star some guiding principles and identify what are the what are the big priority areas that that we want to to put out there for for alum rock moving forward how do we want to think about the highest priorities for the district's work following that going a little more detailed within those priorities what are the goals that that we think should be in place for the district to help guide that work and what are some ideas knowing that that there's going to need to be more detailed implementation planning that that this is uh sitting at a fairly high level in terms of setting the strategic direction and the course for the work what are some ideas about how we might make progress toward those goals building on existing work building on funding streams building on new initiatives from the state uh briefly dr bauer mentioned already we have this is kind of in order of appearance here you'll get sandra pinal talking about the strategic direction in north star sandra rivera presenting on the priority area for whole child and whole family uh yadira and becky much reviewed becky we have on for sure presenting on multilingual and multicultural education as the second priority area and then dayanira presenting on early and expanded learning uh so with that i'll go ahead and pass the microphone here over to you sandra pineal hi um good afternoon to everybody um i was getting ready as we were going through um so yeah based on what we have discussed throughout this past month um we went over oh our vision of what we hope to see or you know our yeah of what we hope to see for the uh to move forward with this plan um sorry yeah kind of got off track and what we have is um this is a building on the district's mission statement we work to develop a north star that provides direction for all arusd efforts the north star describes our hopes for allen brown school district um the future that all of our work is helping us move um move towards um and we have if you see the sections i mean um i mean i it's for everybody i don't know if you want me to read them um do you want me to read them okay so we have all students starting with our with our community's earliest learners are equitable supported to realize their full and unique potential and to explore their interests and passions so all students are multilingual um given that in our community everybody actually speaks more than just one language uh at least 90 um we have um you know families meaningfully engaged in their children's education in schools and alumbak university district provides diverse resources to strengthen families futures our schools and their surrounding communities mutually support each other's health and success the arusd education workforce thrives and experiences ongoing opportunities to grow we are united as students families community and educators in supporting each other and advancing our children to bright futures where each is a critical creative and curious thinker a confident leader in an active citizen um with that i'll move forward to the next slide uh the guiding principles so uh these guiding principles are the core beliefs that embedded in all district work and should never be compromised our service we serve our families and communities as their primary educational institutions we serve our education team by providing opportunities to grow and thrive student success we support the future success of every student and provide the resources and opportunities for students to fulfill their potential in diversity we value our community's cultural diversity as a core strength and maintain cultural curiosity and humility collaboration we work together with respect compassion and empathy and keep an open mind with transparency we communicate transparently maintain an open dialogue and engage the community in decision making and decision making process and i believe in all of these principles really are happening now but we want to continue for them to grow and with that i'll move on to the next slide thanks so much senator for for taking us through that and i hope that you'll see as we get into these priority areas that they're really intended to help make progress toward that north star and that those uh guiding principles are are playing into the how alum rock uh does it its work so i'm gonna uh pass it on momentarily here uh to sandra rivera for our next section i i mentioned these briefly earlier but wanted to take a moment before we we work through them and and hear about them more to put forth these three priority areas and we have them kind of summarized in this in this triangle graphics supporting the the vision or surrounding the vision statement whole child and whole family development kind of forming the foundation there at the bottom of the triangle multilingual and multicultural education and early and expanded learning so we'll go in in that order and um sandra rivera i'll pass it over to you thanks erin again my name is sandra rivera i'm a teacher at cesar chavez and also the area alum rock educators association vice president and we're looking at priority one which is the whole child in whole family development and with this we're supporting the whole child development which means taking an integrated approach to addressing the students academic cognitive physical behavioral and social emotional needs currently most of education is based upon a document called from a nation at risk and that was published in 1983 39 years ago but there's a new document that just came out in 2018 and that document is entitled from a nation at risk to a nation at hope recommendations for the national committee on social emotional and academic development and when we look at this this approach ultimately supports the student's success and elevates their academic performance in this document it says that the promotion of social emotional and academic learning is not a shift in educational fad it is a substance of education itself and while many elements of a child's life improve along with the cultivation of these skills one of the main outcomes is a better academic performance so when we looked at this we have four different goals and the first goal one a says arusd staff families and communities partners share a common understanding of the whole child and whole family development and related programs and activities available at their school and this is about a common understanding of a whole child in the whole family development inc including communication campaigns and trainings for our staff in goal 1b in collaboration with families and community partners air usd schools will provide a range of services and support for academic cognitive critical thinking behavioral and social emotional development we're looking here to ensure that arusd and the partners that are supporting our students and families across the various whole child domains all have the same common goals n1c arusd implements district-wide symptoms and protocols as part of a multi-tiered system of support and this is calling that the establishment of multi-tiered systems of support at arusd will provide the frameworks for delivering universal services in 1d arusd students love learning have opportunities to be creative are in control of their own learning experiences and are able to learn independently so this final goal speaks to how some of the students results will be determined and in that i would like to pass it to becky and yadiera becky looks like you are on mute here let's see if we can take you off of mute thank you i'm sorry there's so many things open and i couldn't figure out how to unmute myself hi everybody my name is becky i'm a parent um of a child at shepherd but he's been in alan rock schools since he was a kinder and i am a long time teacher as well not in allen rock school district anyway i'm going to talk about multilingual and multicultural education so first of all i just want to say you know research has shown for years and years the benefits of multilingual education including its positive impact on academic and career success and i couldn't ask for a better example than the beautiful former student of of mr hernandez who came and and spoke so beautifully about how his spanish helped her not only be successful in his class but all along her career and we know that this is a very diverse area um and we want their goal is for all arusd students to learn multiple multiple uh languages um we are very culturally rich here in alum rock and we recognize this in the district and so it's our goal to have a campaign where families staff partners regarding the value of multilingualism for student success and competitiveness and how to create experiences that every student at arusd can learn multiple languages um let me see what else sorry and um it's our goal that district level roles and responsibilities for documenting communicating supporting the implementation of multilingual education and models across the district and that we can develop an implementation plan and timeline to deploy multilingual education across all of our schools i don't know if yeti not made it and we can pass it on to her for the multicultural i don't see her on here i'm just looking at the attendees list so becky if you wouldn't mind just taking us briefly through the goals that would be fantastic sure so goal 2 a is all arusd students learn multiple languages gold2b a our usd schools celebrate cultures and focus on cultural education and we like i said earlier we know that our community is very rich in um culture on in alum rock and gold2c arusd school professionals are culturally proficient and provided with opportunities to learn multiple languages allowing for those beautiful connections like we heard earlier from mr hernandez former student is there anything else there we go i i think that that covers it thanks thanks so much becky uh we'll go ahead and pass it over to yadira to uh uh sorry today an era to talk through priority area three here okay i think she's just coming up as a as a panelist here we go all right welcome to anira hello can you hear me it disconnected but i'm back on we can hear you loud and clear wonderful thank you so much thank you becky and erin um i'm going to share with you uh about early learning and expanded learning uh high quality early care and educational programs support optimal child development to prepare children for increased success in school and beyond by giving young children a strong start we really allow to build on the foundation for their career as as in their education expanded learning programs also provide a host of benefits for students including dance music art extracurricular activities learning and practicing multiple language as we heard previously is such a richness and and definitely such a value um and augmenting classroom instruction in core academic subjects by being able to provide support for children during the expanded day olim rock unified school district has strong existing partnerships with early and expanded learning partners and recent state investments provide an opportunity to scale and further integrate this work with existing programming and also allow the opportunity to invest on expanding these both that are really such value to parents goal 3a calls for allah school district families to have access to free high quality early and expanded learning definitely in the last two years we've seen how much and important having access to early learning is more so than than ever before right uh goal 3b speaks to the need to structurally and concretely integrate early expanded school day and at home learning and goal 3c refers to the opportunities provided through early and expanded learning for engaging families and students and erin i'll i'll turn it back over to you thanks so much daniera so before we open it up uh for for questions and and comments and reactions um i wanted to to kind of share this expanded version here of that triangle graphic added some detail of course here's to to include the goals that you just heard about from from sandra and and becky and dan nira uh really coming out of that core planning team and the work that it it has done over the last uh five or so months so i i will just want to uh echo some of the thanks earlier um for our presenters uh tonight uh and for for the entire core planning team that has contributed to to this work the development of that north star statement uh that sandra pinal shared and the the three priority areas each with some corresponding goals so um board president quintero i'll pass it back over to you thank you so much all right um so at this point um let's go ahead and open it up for questions comments from the board i would ask that we not engage in a full-on breakdown of the entire strategic plan here i know that there's been input that's been provided uh to the administration and so i'm sure that that can be worked out i would like us to see this more of the presentation of the strategic plan to the public so we can you know engage in the transparency that we've been uh engaging in for a lot of things and that um we take advantage of this time for any particular questions that uh you like answered or that or any points that you would underscore but that we not because if we do go into the path of strike this and move that we're going to be here all night and i don't think it's really um you know it's the best use of any of everybody of anybody's time to do that if we can send any sort of major edits or our questions uh directly back to the administration and then work that way to bring back a strategic plan that is reflective of the board's input i think that'd be the best approach so uh let me call you as i see you board remember i don't know thank you yes uh so a couple of things number one i'm wondering if we're gonna um before we have any comments or questions if we're gonna take public comment i would be interested to hear what the public's thoughts are on what was presented tonight so that's yeah that's a great idea let me go ahead and take public that's one but before i but before i finish my comment um and we can go to the public comment i also just um i guess i'll say it now um you know i think it's i appreciate your comments president quite about the approach that we should take tonight um i i don't know that i necessarily agree with that approach um i think it's i have some fairly significant um you know input about this item um and if we don't have it tonight that's certainly something to entertain we do have a pretty big agenda but then i would wonder what would be the forum for us to have that discussion as a board i think that's significant um but in in the absence with the absence of that kind of a discussion amongst the board i don't know that i would be able to support this item tonight um so those are my comments for now all right let's go to public comment and before we go to public comment give me a quick second let me take the pull the board are you interested in engaging in a full-on uh let's just start going page by page and and striking items and putting items if that's the will of the board i'm all for it i just want to make sure that we as a board are willing to dedicate three hours four hours whatever it might take to knock this out or do we want to bring back a study session and dedicate whatever time you want on a saturday morning to really dig down into strategic plan um i'm not trying to impose my will here it's the will of the board and so if you're choosing to go a line by line and and just do a full-on um work up of the of the strategic plan and provide the board's input uh i'm i'm i'm good with that so we uh remember i don't know we know where your position is and um we'll remember to clarify just to clarify i didn't mean line by line but just higher level but not line by line just declare my my whole point at the very beginning was that if there's uh questions and comments to to that are like significant then the board should engage in that but my concern is that we're going to spend four hours here and the rest of the items in the agenda are not going to get the attention that they deserve if there is a desire to go in line by line then i suggest a study session um i think we're spending a lot more time deciding on this and then going for it i would just go for it i don't i know i don't want to go line by nine i know i haven't heard anybody yet say they want to do line by line um i think a conversation and then whatever direction that takes if at that moment we've been talking about it for over 10 minutes then it might call for a study session but it might be less than 10 minutes so i think i you know would say let's go for it and then let's see where we are at maybe in about 10 minutes you know i would propose i mean if that's uh if we're going to do uh a more in-depth dive into the strategic plan than i would propose that uh we just set aside a saturday uh next month or so and have a study session uh given that uh you know let's hear from the public that there is comments tonight in in the dedicated public uh you know uh portion of public comment for this item but uh we do have a full agenda tonight and we also do have you know hearings for uh the lcap as well as the budget so uh in all fairness to the public and also our our staff you know i think that maybe we should uh schedule a scheduled study session for this thank you all right uh let me go ahead and take public comments at this point hello board president at this time i see no request for public comment all right so i think that's a good strategy we'll take it will play by ear in terms of the um the input um the questions from the board and if it's looking like it's going to go a lot longer then that'll probably be a good sign to go ahead and dedicate a saturday morning to this so let me go ahead and take it to you as i see you uh board vice president uh our board member thank you um and i've already brought up these points to dr bauer so um i know that dr brower has been in meetings with you all so i'm sure you've heard these uh points but before i mention those points i do want to say thank you so much thank you for spending the time to work on this um as a previous uh part of the strategic planning team prior to becoming a trustee i know how much time it takes i know the dedication it takes um and then having been a board president at the time mr price when we started this work you know i know how many months it's been i know how many you know now years right um so i really want to thank you all for the time and investment in ensuring that we have this document and it's not just because it needs to be you know put on the shelf somewhere and check off a box but because our children deserve for us to sit down and see where we're at right and how are we going to make our district better so i want to thank you each and every one of you from the parent you know volunteering the time to the staff mr price for leading this effort um and also santa clara county office of education for um supporting this in the us on this process so thank you all very much um i was happy to you know see the document i was happy to review it um you know and overall it's great you know i'm excited um and then there was just you know a few little items no line by line here you know i'm not looking forward or want to stay on a saturday morning so i'm hoping that we don't have to go there but if we do i'm dedicated and i'll show up um but you know just the word child care right like i want to get away from child care we're an educational uh we're a district where children come and learn right we're not just here to provide child care um and you know even those that you know might maybe for the parent it might help them during the time for the kid to be somewhere safe or while they're you know wherever wherever they get to be um we're still providing uh education right regardless of the age and so if we could just strike out child care you know i'd be happy with that and then you know on the other um talking in regards to you know going from child care and ensuring that that education is happening right we um i heard it you know and we want to make sure that our our children are learning um and obviously excelling right um and so i did mention to dr bauer that for me it would be important to see um a number to have a goal right um what you know that we definitely want every child to learn we want every child to be a part of we want the whole child to you know be doing good but i want to see kind of where we're at and how are we going to improve is it 20 is it 30 i don't know whatever we you know we all decide as a district um that would be a good number to then measure right so that we can look back and say okay now a year later where are we at how we met what we set out to do um and so those things for me would be important to see and be highlighted somewhere um and that's it for me for now thank you board member hello yes thank you so um i have a couple of comments that are very similar i think to trustee and but i think mine are a little a little more broad or kind of top level less specific um so first of all i also want to thank the team similarly you know knowing what a task it is to put together a strategic plan it's such a in some ways it's such a thing that you can't really put your hands on some of it and and you really have to think out of the box and and project and think forward and that's not easy to do always so i appreciate that work that everyone has done to this point um and i also appreciate the the um you know the the three uh kind of sides of the triangle right now and the rest of it i appreciate how those things that have been identified tie into uh work that we've been doing the past several years with everything from ethnic studies to early child learning and all that stuff it's a tying in and connection of a direction that we're already moving into and so i don't in the la in a large part or overall there's really not much that i don't agree with of what's in the um in the what we got presented tonight the one question that i would have um and i also talked to dr bauer about these things as well so the the part about every child will be multilingual um you know i obviously i understand the benefits of bilingual being bilingual and what that does cognitively for how children and people who learn another language think um but it's for me it's kind of i would i would like to see as part of our north star um just like a more general statement about our focus on academics in general and i know i've heard the comments about the the the notion that developing a whole child developing the foundation through early learning providing multilingual learning those things added together will will lead to academic results and i also understand the the idea that a child or a student should not be defined by a test score or a grade those are all very clear to me but i also do think that as an academic institution as a district it is important that we in some way call out um [Music] you know the the idea that we as a district are strategizing to move forward in a way that does have academic results because if we go with our vision that we are creating i'm not going to phrase it 100 but we're creating students who will be able to thrive in a um competitive and diverse world um if we're saying that if we're preparing students to thrive in that world then part of that not all of it but part of it in reality does include academic results academic outcomes um because you know high schools and colleges there are there are expectations and benchmarks that our students will need to reach and so i think it's important that we include that somewhere in our language i talked to dr bauer about you know we just kind of started about how that might be integrated and what into what's already there um but for me that's that's important because as a parent of two graduates of allen rock if i were to look at the strategic plan it's awesome that we have all these services that no one else really provides and and that's the foundation of what we do but as a parent i also want to know okay but what is my child going to learn what is my child going to be expected to how will they be expected to perform academically and so um i don't know tonight that we would get that language specifically in the document um so if it's a study session i would be open to that i know this is one of the items one of the last remaining items that we need to finish in terms of our audit so there is some some level of urgency here but i would be comfortable with uh making sure that we get a product that that works for everyone and and is nice and tight and and really is thinking about the next three to five years um as opposed to just um expediting it in term for the purposes of meeting that um audit requirement that we've already been you know delayed for some time now so those are kind of my thoughts right now but i i also don't need to go line by line but those are just some of the things that i um my response to the audit i mean that's the audit the strategic plan very far from an audit so thank you but thank you again for the work further comments from the board so was there any particular questions for uh the or the board members were there any particular questions with regard to the strategic plan uh because i know there was a general comments uh yeah i guess um if you're asking for a specific question one that i might have is um the the way it's written up with regards to the multilingualism um i see that for teachers again i'm paraphrasing but it's for teachers and staff it's something along the lines of the district will provide opportunities for multilingual learning or something along those lines but for students it's every child will be multilingual so i'm wondering um if there if the language could be similar could match where we certainly would provide opportunities and we could you know put resources into that and make it kind of a priority but it's not necessarily a mandate um for every single student um specif especially if we're not calling out a mandate of learning in any of other academic areas so the question is if there's some way that matching the language with teachers and students could happen so that it's um you know same same kind of thing and mr price would you be able to respond and then also i know some of the members of the team had on their hands up so you'd be able to incorporate them into the response or or whatever it is that way we maintain some sort of uh order because we've already gone through public comments so i just want to make sure that the public doesn't see me calling in other members of the public yeah would it be okay to to um to have the members of the presentation team tonight help respond yeah i think that way they have you know who has a unique uh in the information based on the work that they did within the plan um so i think sandra pinal and sandra rivera i saw both of you pop your hands up did would you like to respond to some of the comments so far no well for my part uh mr bergeron you pointed out a lot of things about you know multilingual uh myself uh also being a product of alum rock um matson um and being an english learner uh coming to this country learning a new language um it wasn't easy but what i do see is that when you're learning a new language um and there are there are researchers of research that um are available in statistics um that let people know uh how having more than one language actually helps you um in your learning not only in the english but like math science in other areas so um i feel like i wanted i needed to say that just to have in the open and me my you know myself being an example of that as well um of how you know your education really farthest uh a lot more uh by having that exposure and indirectly in our community we are exposed to many um many cultures in many many languages um that's what i've seen and again as a parent of multilingual students um that's what i see my my children and i am myself so i feel like i needed to address that just so that um because i i from what what i understood from your part you know you can correct me if i'm wrong but kind of like putting it what you know on the edge of having more time multilingual and you know who is gonna you know who who's gonna be a part of it or you know how that's gonna work um so that's that's what i i heard from you and i just feel that having that exposure to multilingualism it really gives a huge advantage to the students so i mean that was my part um i believe uh the other part about you know having the same for the students and the instructors um i guess i can agree with that but again i i 100 believe that if the students are given that um that exposure it really is going to help them a lot whether they take the classes or they don't because indirectly all the students are being exposed to multilingualism multiculturalism and it really gives them a huge advantage so i think what we're doing with uh with this plan is really focusing on that part to help them move forward thanks sandra oh sorry did you have more okay senator rivera did you want to win as well miss herrera sorry herrera loretta in the um giving us a number to reach to or a goal to reach to as far as academics are concerned um and i i understand what you're saying and i understand that seeing that goal is very more prominent for parents and for the community to see but what we have been learning in education as educators and all the research that has been showing lately is that we have students that can fill in the bubbles and we have students that can learn the task but pretty much as soon as they learn the task that's all they're doing is just learning that specific task or that specific academic achievement mark what whole child learning and what um the studies are now showing is that without the social emotional development without the rest of the whole child you know development we're not seeing the students be able to cognitively do critical thinking skills they're not as inept to persevering in a task when they're faced with a difficulty they give up rather than try to push through and so trying to get specific language like that i don't know how we can do it so that we still incorporate it and get what is best for the students when we met with everybody in this group the biggest thing that they heard was that they want their child's two children to succeed through these different avenues and i think that in part some of that is going to fall back on us to communicate how these things line up to better progress one of the things that when i was reading some of the research really stuck out to me was that an emphasis on these capacities isn't a sacrifice a rigor but it's actually a source of it and because of the fact that we're teaching the children to be more self-assured to be more in touch with who they are and to be able to have those safeties met for them that they're then more willing to push through or try something and fail instead of living in that kind of fear of never being able to take that next step in fear of failure and not succeeding is there anything else from the team yeah thank you for the um the responses and you know i'm i'm open i'm not sure i wasn't taking time to see where we're at um you know we need to shift it to saturday session uh because i'm all i'm all with you all right um i agree uh the studies have shown um and i have a seventh grader who's going to be an eighth grader next year who fits each and every one of those um boxes you know um and at the end of the day and at the end of eighth grade she's still gonna have to go to high school right and be prepared for high school so she might not fit the box you know in those bubbles um but she still needs to also learn how to manage that and so how do we as the alum rocking elementary school district right together as a trustee as a superintendent as the teachers teaching prepare our students to walk into those high schools and be ready to take the a through g requirements that one will then allow them to go to college right and so and you know and we can have a long discussion about this and how we can incorporate that but that's gonna be important for me as a parent of a seventh grader in our district going into eighth grade struggling right because she doesn't fit those boxes because all those things that you talk about i agree with 100 she'll be fine she's confident she'll play you know the base she i mean is a part of a club she'll be the leader she'll be fine however she still has to go through the a through g requirements she still has to have the grades in order to get to certain high schools that you know might accept her where she would have a better you know um opportunity of getting into certain colleges and so how do we you know marry that right like i get it and i'm with you all when you talk about all those things but for me it's important to make sure that when our kids leave our schools at eighth grade that they're going into college prep courses without having any type of challenge and so if my daughter is at a i don't know i'm gonna say fifth grade level in seventh grade right what kind of percentage can we do to support her to get her you know again it might not be to the point at grade level but at least 20 better or whatever it is right that's what i'm looking for something that pushes our children to that next level to bring them to the place so that they can be all of you know what we have um in our strategic plan currently um and that they're the best of the best you know because they are we know they are and sometimes it's just you know something that the teachers can be um you know um as as a trustee right i could measure myself did i do my part in there to make sure that you know i i i helped that 20 as a superintendent did i do my part as a teacher did i do my part as a student did i do my part so we all feel some sense of did i do my part in order to bring those students right forward i don't know if i'm making any sense am i making any sense and hopefully i'm not off but you know i have a seventh grader going to eighth grade you know in august and i want her to be 20 better than she is now at least right i mean i want her to be 100 better but give me like i want to see all of us push ourselves to that next level and being able to measure to say hey i said i was going to be 20 better did i do that did i set that goal and did i match that i don't know if that makes any sense sorry sorry can i ask my question to real quick because it might guide this conversation somewhere else are we um planning on voting today or okay this feedback is gonna be taken back maybe massaged in and then maybe voted on at the next board meeting okay thank you remember how you had to end up before yeah um so first i wanted to thank um miss pinata oh yeah she's still here for her comments i certainly appreciate them and hearing her personal experience is very helpful to um you know coloring in the the ideas that we're talking about now and i don't i don't disagree with with any of those comments um you know i'm aware of the research that talks about the benefits of um being bilingual learning multiple languages i i get all of that stuff but from one part of my challenge is that and i agree with her like i agree with that concept being multilingual is a benefit 100 agree with that because the research tells us but also as a trustee i realized that i cannot sit in this role and make decisions necessarily because i or i can make decisions but i feel like i can't mandate something because of my experience or several of our experiences or opinions um if that may not be the the desire of all of our parents i don't know that 100 of parents in our district want their child to be multilingual particularly if we're calling out multilingualism but not some of the other areas or academics um that we're talking about so so although you know i get what miss pinal said and i agree with it i also am mindful that i um have to keep in mind those parents in our district who may not want to be mandated may not want their child to be mandated to do something um when their priority may be kind of those a through g things that tristate alone was talking about and the other part that i wanted to say kind of with regard to miss rivera's comment is that um you know i don't think from my perspective this is like an either or like i don't think for me the stuff that i'm talking about and i think trustee darlowetta is talking about with regards to some calling out or some focus intentional focus on just academics i don't think we're necessarily saying that we don't believe in the concept of the whole child why i support that wholeheartedly um i but i think it's a both it's like what is that saying it's not a if but it's a both and or something like that i think that we can simultaneously support the concept and direct resources to and put emphasis on developing the whole child early learning the opportunity for multi multilingual learning um especially when we know that our students most likely are going to go into high school and it's going to be a requirement for them to take foreign languages at that level so i support that concept of whole child whole child learning and all those things i just think in addition to that it's important to um again be intentional about the academic focus of what we're doing because i also don't you know my daughters are moved forward a little more in their academic careers now and i don't want them to be bubble fillers and just remember something the day of the test and then not have any you know benefit of that learning the next day but they will have to fill in bubbles at some point to get to you know whatever they want to achieve so it's like i want them to be whole chop whole children and have all those areas those domains of their self to be addressed but i also want them to be able to fill in the bubbles when they need to because that's a reality at this time of the you know the expectations as as you know students move through or move up towards whatever they want to do so um so i think the so i think for me i'm totally supportive i think this is a a healthy discussion to have i think we can all learn from it i think that we can come to a great product um but it's already great but i think we could maybe make it even more um you know inclusive of everyone's thoughts about what our strategy should be so i would be supportive of a study session in order to flesh this out and really get it to where we want it to be wherever travis so i mean i'm a multi-lingualism and multiculturalism that's great but at the same lines i'm thinking what about the proficiency level what will it be it will it be less or advanced than a native or fluent speaker i just want to make sure that once they do go further that they're going to be at the level that that they need to be and so study session is good with me thank you and i apologize for being late i was at the jane at james lake high school for the joseph george graduation thank you um mr price you have your uh your team and it has comments yep uh thanks see a couple hands up um here to becky and then danira oh i figured out how to unmute myself this time um so i just wanted to touch a basis a little bit on the whole child part that we're talking about and i think it it really is important to say that while academics are very important in our children's lives we've got to lay the foundation of social development emotional development in those younger years so that when those kids hit high school junior high even late elementary school they know how to navigate and negotiate conflict in their relationships with their friends with their teachers i mean all of us work we all know that person who's super smart and super academic in our job but they don't have any social skills and they struggle to work in a team they struggle to get their job done well because they can't navigate or communicate with their co-workers you know we need to lay that foundation we teach kids how to get their shovels back without biting somebody before we lay on all the academics we've got to lay that foundation of social and emotional learning so we don't have high schoolers shooting people up because they don't know how to navigate the conflict that's happening in their lives i just wanted to say that thanks thanks uh becky dan here did you want to chime in as well uh yeah just to piggy off uh what becky is saying you know i think that uh trustee vegeta you definitely hit on this and said it's it's both and right and i think when we're thinking of i just wanted to add when we're thinking of the whole child approach and the whole child approach to teaching it really is all of those things it is the social emotional uh development it's learning um how do we nurture these areas it's learning the cognitive skills to literacy math and science and understanding and really being able to build that build on that from an early age to prepare children um from preschool to kindergarten so the whole child approach i just wanted to uh reiterate that in saying that it's inclusive of the academic piece as well as a social emotional piece it's really teaching to to the whole child and not just one area and um that was my comment thank you so we don't tend to have any sort of uh give me a quick second dr brown let me get my points in it doesn't seem like anybody's saying you're not gonna do this you're not doing that it seems more like are we willing to do both and given that i don't think we need to have a full-on study session i think that you can work send in your your concerns your comments because if we were diametrically opposed then we'd obviously have to go ahead and call for a study session to work out those sticking points but in this case it seems like we're all willing to move forward in the same direction just in addition to um and so dr bauer do you think that you'd be able to take in the input from the members of the board working with aaron uh to recognize the position of the team and the work that the team did uh and then come together with a strategic plan that brings in the input of the board members as well as the work that the the team did and then bring forward a um a another draft of the of the other strategic plan that we can go ahead and consider and then ultimately vote on at the next meeting um so the floor is yours you said exactly what i was gonna say and and what it's um magical for me is that i have been listening to both groups right during my one-on-ones with the board and and i know where the team is coming from so i definitely i i had this conversation with aaron trusty uh my board president and uh we definitely can integrate the feedback into the plan and so that we can bring it for approval during the june 23 meeting you'd be able to go back and forth with the individual board members that have the feedback and that are wanting to uh make adjustments to the strategic plan does that sound something that the board would be uh willing to to do or if if the desire is to move forward with a um with a uh study session then speak up now i'll get the sense of the board and then we can follow the direction that the board is interested in pursuing i'm open to that as a as the next step and see how that goes and hopefully we can finish it there if not i still would be open to a conversation if necessary but i think it's a reasonable next step all right um remember travis do you what did you move forward as well right with the recommendations or the yes uh yeah i'm in agreement i have i'm sure that it uh by the 23rd we'll have something especially if dr bauer will come back to us right between now and then we can come up with something that we can um approve then thank you we're breastfeeding i'll conclude i concur also thank you all right it looks like we have the direction at this point there's no action to be taken this evening uh because of the what we just said so we'll go ahead and leave it at that and move on to the next item make sure to have your comments in well you already have had your comments into dr bauer already correct um and so well i i probably would send more specific comments i think my when i gave feedback to the original thing it was more general but i probably would want the opportunity to now at this point be a little more specific and intentional about what my thoughts are all right so that way dr bauer has the ability to go ahead and start incorporating would we agree that by the 14th uh have everybody's comments to dr bauer so that you can communicate with aaron and um they can all figure out how to incorporate everybody's comments in without having to rush at the very last minute before the next board meeting yeah uh boardroom traffic uh i am in agreeance okay all right um so make sure to get your comments in by the 14th if you're if you're interested in having any comments or any uh amendments to the strategic plan thank you uh for your excellent work uh a team i appreciate uh the parents um the very of the various stakeholder groups that were represented i know that you have tons of other things to do um and i know that uh you've taken very precious time of your own to invest it into alum rock and it will be for the better uh because this will be a blueprint that we can use to guide us as we're moving forward so thank you very much for your for your work on this all right we'll we're going to go ahead and move on to item 3.01 uh members of the public wishing to speak please indicate by raising your hand and this is to speak on any item that's not on the agenda already yes mr royal president we have three speakers first engagement and really centering our voices and not just entering it actually making a space on the table for parents to um you know provide us with that leadership um i also on that note i also wanted to talk about um thank you to our counselors miss jessica and miss lay i believe that's her last name first name um they were both amazing and um they sent us an end-of-year kind of recap on san antonio and it talked about how they served seventy percent seventy seven percent of our students san antonio is about two hundred and eighty two hundred sixty student population and so just wanted to highlight the need for mental health it's still out there seventy percent of the student those two people serve 70 of the student population um so i'm so grateful to them because i know that you know i talked to them um but again continue to advocate for that mental health please we need more counselors and even as we move forward some of our students from travis are coming to our schools and other schools and so we need more um more counseling also um our playground in san antonio has been closed i've sent emails i've talked to everyone and it can't nobody has done anything please open 2022-06-10 Barton County, KS YouTube / Oilers112 Media transcript source: youtube USD 112 Special BOE meeting June 9, 2022 · passage 2
these are the personal qualities that you would like to see in your new superintendent if i was doing face-to-face focus groups they're more open-ended it's a little more difficult to do that on online surveys so we provided eight responses that are pretty common and we asked those respondents to prioritize those one through eight so as you can see if you look on the far right is what we will call a power score i will tell you that very seldom do i see a power score of six or higher so you have two responses on this one that are above six so that is personal strength to do what's right regardless of circumstances and of now i want you to notice 181 people responded but only 125 answered this question so 41 percent that responded to this had that as their number one priority so do you see how that's working so far and then number two is kids first personality now although that is a very high power score it's still number two and interestingly only 22 percent had that as their first priority now you might see that the second highest power score might have a higher percent as having that as your number one priority so you might be checking those percents now the others are still important because obviously people prioritize these but there's quite a bit of jump between 6.03 and a 5.03 so it still could be important to you but i just noted the top two because they kind of stood out so as a board i would really appreciate do these responses surprise you is there something in here you go no that's exactly what i would have thought if i was doing it or is there something you want me to know about these responses because ultimately you folks are the ones that get to really do the prioritization any comments or questions about that particular question do you feel comfortable i guess for uh no nothing surprises her it's all common sense okay question number four these are the leadership qualities and once again there's eight that they prioritize from uh you did again once again had a power score over six there there sometimes i do this and there's no power scores over six on any of these questions and you've got three of them just within the first two questions so an efficient manager of resources and budget so you can see that's your top but the 6.23 almost 35 percent of your respondents had that as their number one priority a proactive forward thinker was number two with a pretty high power score but only 17 percent had it as their number one priority and then third is community oriented and involved in the community and you can see their power scores similarly similar to number two and pretty similar on the number one if you look at how many had that as number one so once again i'd sure appreciate any comments that you might have that you you as a board feel comfortable with what you're seeing there or i wish something was higher i think the efficient manager of resources and budget aligns with the results of the discussions we've had in the committee yeah i i i would fully expect to see that one really high here uh you know as i said i've done dozens and dozens of these that one's usually fairly high but it's never that high so that probably is a telling uh indicator for you folks so you're right on track i would say question five is the identified experiences that you would like your new superintendent to have and once again you can see i think these two are very similar which this is experience with business and the operations of a school district so it wasn't over six but six is really high so 5.3 is pretty uh pretty high and then number two is previous superintendent experience five four nine and then a pretty good split between number two and three so i just highlighted the first one and the second one that doesn't mean that those are not the others are not important to you but that would be once again something i'd want you to tell me so number one and number two i see is fairly similar that obviously if you have previous superintendent experience you're going to have experience with the business operations of the school and i do also think that that ties in with your number one priority on the previous question any comments from the board that would like to add anything to that one now everybody is waiting for question six because this is the open ended questions this is where everybody has their opportunity to take a shot because they don't have to say their name but i will absolutely say this when and i don't always get to say this to boards a lot of times i will come to you and redact some statements because there's been individual names i did not have to redact one comment in here now there might be something that you guess who they're talking about but there's not one name in here i will tell you after reading through here most of it is uh the discussion on the the split between your district the fracture set it in different words between north and south i don't think that would surprise you but i would guess 75 of the comments in here had something to do with that type of thing i don't plan on going through all of these with you but i do think it would be important for you as individuals to read those at some point i'll let you prove that just a little bit before we go on just so you know that i'm not kidding you when i redact statements i usually give the board the unredacted so you'll know what because it's your information but if the public wants to see it you have the redacted version that you can hand to them so and mr mark it's okay i will continue and you guys can peruse that if you want to keep looking or look at it your own time question seven which is the last question what would be the singer single quality or characteristic that would separate one candidate from other candidates so it had to be one and i will tell you that your number one response has never not been the number one response so it's what we all want as employers is an honest uh trustworthy and somebody with strong integrity that we figure can become really good employees but number two is a little bit unusual but it does absolutely match some of your other responses which is the fiscal operations management expertise so that's not typically that high but it didn't shock me here just simply knowing what the responses of your other questions were so before we go to something new i guess any comments to say gary if you are fortunate enough to get some quality candidates uh do these characteristics seem to be what you would want me to be screening for or are there things in there that you would also want me to be looking for you do not have a number seven this one's share my may i continue sure all right like to go over the super senate salary comparison so that you'll have an opportunity we do not get into the negotiations of this but we do want you as a board to have good information so that you're comfortable when you offer a package to a superintendent candidate so i'd like to review this with you and understand so that you have a good understanding of what your you are looking at the columns are important some of them are very obvious they don't need any explanation but i'm going to anyway a of course is the usd number b is the name c is the reported enrollment d is the year we have that information so 2122 means current information so obviously diane has done a good job there but you may see a couple of uh years that are not up to date so if they were all up to date it might change the information so just be aware of that column e is the base salary so that has been queried and filtered from lowest to highest using column e because that's a known number the next column is their yearly fringe benefit and the reason i don't want and then the next column of course is the total of those two columns i don't filter using that because we never know for sure what their fringe benefit is you can almost guarantee it's health insurance but there could be car expenses in there there could be professional dues whatever some superintendents may have in their contracts so i do want you to know it's filtered using base salary h column uh h is the following that's your collection classification i is if they are an interim superintendent so if you would happen to see a yes anywhere on here that means that particular person is an interim jay is if they are capers retired or otherwise double dipping so if you happen to see a yes they are a capers retired superintendent k means that they're also performing principal duties so you may or may not see a yes in there at times l is the number of years they have been a superintendent in that district the next column is the number of total years they've been a superintendent so if i was a superintendent in your district for six years and six years in another district there would be a 12 on that that column and the very last column is the number of days in their contract so if you look at the very top one kiowa county has a 240 day contract obviously you don't work saturday and sunday's theoretically even no administrators do on occasion uh holidays those types of things if you happen to see a 365-day contract that's probably interpreted because they didn't have another way it's a 12-month contract and then they just get designated holidays and vacations so if you look at the very first graph there central plains is right in the middle by design so of your current salary you can see in column e there's 15 salaries or districts that are directly lower salaries are the ones that are physically above your number the 15 salaries that are directly higher are below that on the paper so you've got 31 districts that are most closely clustered with your salary may or may not be good information but if you look at enrollment acacia classification those types of things you'll see hey there's some 1a's in here there's some 3a's that sort of thing of course the central prairie your activities league most boards really like that information because you identify with those districts maybe more than others i also know that you only have one high school that happens to be in that so you can see where you stand in that particular district and then the northern plains i am not sure why i know wilson is in that but it was wilson's not listed in our databases in that so i went ahead and provided the northern plains league for you and obviously your salary's not in there but you could see where it would stand up those are obviously a little bit smaller school districts so may or may not be good information for you because it's hard to classify your district because you have two high schools i've done two different queries for you i've done all of the school districts that have enrollments between 301 and 600.

i am the vice president of the foundation and i'm also a alumni of the alum rock jazz program i attended hubbard elementary school and i attended shepard middle school we are asking we are here today to ask for your continued support uh primarily with transport transportation for our kids uh to be able to participate in the after after school program last year because of the difficulties with transportation we had a 20 drop in student participation in the program i think it's a shame that we are losing 20 percent of our students who cannot participate in this program because of the lack of transportation i know transportation has been a continuing problem uh when i participated in this program in the 80s you know parents were able to provide transportation uh but it's getting harder and harder to do that so again i would ask for your uh we are asking for uh additional support to the program primarily with transportation so we can get our kids to the rehearsals in the afternoons and again thank you very much for your time and we continue we ask for your continued support thank you thank you for your comments mr sandoval our next speaker is adrien bay miss vayne you have two minutes please admit yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin hello oh wait hello sorry it muted me um okay uh i'm a teacher at joseph george middle school and um i wanted to speak about safety today and i hope over the summer you guys plan to make some safety changes especially at joseph george middle school with the math school shooting that happened last week in texas and the shooting that happened near at the library near fisher middle school which i'm sorry hilaria but your email was very vague about and you know some of the teachers at my school we had promotion tonight and i myself included was a little scared to go to promotion because of security and the threat of gun violence and at joseph george middle school we've had multiple kids jump our fence that are not our students this year while our kids were on campus this is a great safety concern i saw a video online of how to use a chair to block my door in case of a school shooting i think we really need to talk about safety and talk about senses and how to keep our kids safe we this is nationwide and this has happened in with our schools this week fisher middle school went on lockdown yes it was at 3 30 but kids were still there we need more safety concerns and i would have loved to heard some of you talk about those safety concerns at the beginning of this meeting teachers are scared and i i just hope you listen thank you for your comments miss wayne our next speaker is sandra rivera miss rivera you have two minutes please submit yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin good evening board and dr bauer my name is sandra rivera and i am a tk teacher at chavez that is being repurposed to the early childhood learning center and i have an ask the first thing i'm asking is that i understand that our laptops need to be tweaked and revised and brought up on our certain safety software programs and everything over the summer but this is how i do my job and while i am not teaching summer school i am constantly planning and with the repurposing of the school we are looking at new curriculum and new ways to innovate and really bring in the whole child's learning to the younger population without my laptop i can't do any of that work over the summer and so i'm asking that if it is working on these if they can please get these in and out back to the teachers as soon as possible because while we're not technically on the clock we do still work my second ask is that i'd be treated as a professional i find it superbly and i find it superbly disturbing that every year i'm asked to sign a contract to check out my laptop with all of our programs with all of the computer software with all of the kids learning materials now online my laptop is my te and so to be made to have to quote unquote pay for it if there's any damage or to have to buy a charging cord if mine doesn't work anymore is degrading for your profession to me as an individual mark zuckerberg doesn't ask his employees to check out their computers at facebook please don't make us do that here either thank you for your comments mrs rivera our next speaker is tim spacek mr spacek you have two minutes please admit yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin hello uh thank you for pronouncing my name correctly i really appreciate that uh i'm here this evening to speak to you about the alum rock jazz program i am the president of the alumni jazz foundation and as mr sandoval just spoke to you about we just had our fundraising event where we were able to raise money and we can help the jazz program continue to provide services for our students it was so nice years ago when we became included in the summer extended year program and we're able to you know coexist on campuses with other programs going on we now would like to be included in any kind of transportation because it's so important for our program to be able to get the kids there and if we can do that then we can continue to provide these services and this excellent music education for our students in alum rock and the next chapter in this jazz band's history is looks bright with our continued alumni that come back and support the program but again uh probably that the thing that's going to keep us down would be transportation for our students it's always been so important for us to be able to get our students to the locations where we're able to provide the services i thank you for your time and please consider my plea to you to help us out with our transportation issues thank you for your comments mr patrick mr board president we have no more speakers all right moving on to item 4.01 uh the alarm rock educators association i'm rock uh administrative association sorry about that good evening board members uh superintendent bower my name is ivan montes and i am the proud principal of san antonio elementary school and president of the alum rock administrators association this is a vibrant and exciting time within the school year where we're closing out uh the week strongly in the middle of kinder promotions fifth grade promotions uh eighth grade promotions um providing numerous opportunities for to send off our young people um and close out the school year i want to take a moment to recognize some of our amazing management team for the work that they have been doing over the course of the year starting out with dr amazon and dr ortigas investing in social emotional learning is important and to continue uh our work uh at sites serving the whole needs of our young people and extremely important to deepen it and remain committed to making to meeting the sel needs of the young people we serve every administrator will let you know that this is a priority and a focus area of importance i also want to take a moment to shout out our academic services team in particular dr clyden for his leadership in supporting principals and staff with casp and elpac testing at the end of the year tremendous work and as we closed out board members i also want to thank you for your consideration of item 10.5 approval of the five percent increase to salary schedules for the certificated management classified management at supervisory and confidential employees uh this evening as we close out the year we are also beginning a new chapter and uh our mot department is hard at work with making sure that our sites once uh we close out are um are kicking into gear to make sure classrooms and buildings are ready to to offer programs across uh our district to meet the needs of our young people and so they are doing tremendous work um and want to recognize uh mr villarreal in his department here um sandra miss garcia in the state federal department for her leadership in organizing coordinating these programs for young people um so board that is my update um grateful to to see you all out and about at the promotions and um we're super excited um to to have a strong send off for for our communities all right someone's item 4.02 teamsters um miss tom fu from teamsters board president told me he was not going to be able to be with us tonight i mentioned to him that i gave him thanks for his tremendous work uh on behalf of measure i i'll talk about that later all right uh anybody from cssa sharon uh insurance out of town okay all right uh area 4.04 good evening all first i would like to extend congratulations to all of the teachers of the year and a particular shout out to mr hernandez from casell for representing the amazing teachers of vellum rock at the county level um it it's always i'm sorry that i missed the event this year but i've been under the weather for a while but and um i i just you know we do have a group of amazing teachers the best of the best um i would also like to begin by giving a huge thank you to the voters of the alum rock community who approved the continuation of the parcel tax benefiting the students of our district that is absolutely amazing and will provide a big help to the district i particularly want to acknowledge maria martinez for chairing the committee and giving it her all and then some you probably already know that if you want something done maria is the one to put in charge of it um and i want to thank tom fu from teamsters for taking on the task of treasure and for the work that he did and congratulations and thank you to all of you that invested your time energy and resources to help move alum rocks goals forward with the passage of this parcel tax not to quickly spiral downward but another topic that i would like to address is that of school safety um i had a conversation with dr bauer earlier today that since the recent tragedy that took place in texas i've been observing a lot of comments that have been written on our area closed facebook group about the immediate concern that our some of our members have to have an increase in safety measures to secure our classroom doors in the event that we are subject to intruders on campus and i i know that addie vane spoke to you tonight about the you know i mean everyone is is concerned as you could tell and and there are things that we need to address um some years back we reached an agreement that all classrooms would have the peepholes and the doors and the doors would be lockable from the inside and while i know that most of the classrooms are in compliance not all of them are so it was interesting for me to read over the comments and suggestions that the individual individual teachers were sharing on ways to block the doors that aren't for those classroom doors that aren't the typical door but frankly our teachers have enough duties and responsibilities to carry out without having to individually problem solve how to secure their classroom doors dr bauer shared with me this morning her intent to organize a committee to focus on these safety concerns and get them taken care of as soon as possible and i truly appreciate that approach and look forward to getting things taken care of hopefully prior to the start of the next school year on the agenda tonight is an action item for you to approve two new job descriptions for the area bargaining unit well area is in complete support of the need for these services one is for um intervention specialists that would be helping out during the school day and the other one is for new teacher induction support we are not in total agreement with the job descriptions as they have been submitted as far back as i have served on area leadership we have always bargained job descriptions prior to them being approved in fact i have a binder in my office that includes those job descriptions and i have emails from far back asking is scheduled times to bargain the job descriptions however when the idea of these positions were brought was brought to me last wednesday i was told that we don't have a right to bargain job descriptions i then received a response to my inquiry from the new super assistant superintendent of hr that the district was only required to bargain the impact and effects of these job descriptions i am sharing this with you for several reasons whether it is law or not when we have a practice in place that has worked for more than 12 years that i am aware of why would we change it now also if there are pieces of the job descriptions that you have been asked to approve that will definitely have a negative impact or effect requiring grievances to be filed in the future why wouldn't we want to agree with the job descriptions to avoid that from happening to begin with rather than having to amend them later and as their as they are currently written there are problems with with them um they're you know i have yet to go over them thoroughly but just in looking at them overall some of them that quickly jumped out was the issue of who the evaluator will be for these people it was it was um actually it contradicted itself within the job description in my opinion so my ask of you tonight is that you tabled the approval of the job descriptions until we have had an opportunity to make the changes to the potential areas that may be in question i know that there's another meeting coming up in june where this can take place and it just simply makes more sense to post an agreed-upon job description and avoid future problems and to rush into approving ones that need to be amended once again i would like to thank all of you on the board who voted to ratify our tentative bargaining agreement at the last board meeting on behalf of area members and myself i would like to hear an explanation of why trustee chavez voted no do you honestly think you're going to keep a teaching staff in this district if you're not prepared to compensate them for the work that they do well we are grateful for the agreement we reached you might want to scout around the county and see the valuable settlements that are being settled for multi-years multi-year contracts in the future voting down an increase that doesn't even keep up with inflation certainly sends a clear message to the teachers about your value of them it also sends a message to the community that you are not looking out for the best interests of alum rock school district it's difficult enough to find teachers willing to come here when they go when they can go to many other places and make a lot more money but it absolutely adds to lack of staffing when potential teachers see that they don't have the support of the entire school board so if you are if you have a justification which i'm assuming that you do we are very interested in hearing about why you would vote it down and lastly on behalf of my area and myself i want to wish assistant superintendent renee sanchez the best of everything in his new chapter whatever it might be and wherever it might take him i saw his resignation in tonight's board packet many of you may not know this but renee began in alum rock as a student teacher at lindale elementary school my home school he has invested his time heart and soul into our district and for our students and for that we thank you much mr sanchez good luck to you and i would like to wish all of you and all of the teachers a great summer vacation um that has is couldn't be more deserving and more timely this has been a a challenging year for everyone and i think everyone is needs time to regroup and rejuvenate and look forward to a new school year so thank you all right moving on time 4.05 superintendent done how was it it was half pro uh impromptu uh jocelyn are you still uh you have a comment i'm gonna say to jocelyn that uh half of the items that she said is ditto jocelyn um thank you so much uh for every once maria martinez uh as the lead of the measure i committee the president and the chair and tom foo was the treasurer for leading us into victory of something that really was is needed in alum rock thank you so much also to the entire committee mr giocorona trusty fam maribel carrillo also jumped in and hovera and i were part of that it was it was you know a lot of hours especially for that core group and i don't see myself as part of the core group but uh the volunteerism uh and this is uh something that is not as attractive as other um campaigns like the bonds where a lot of people want to participate and donate and stuff like that and yet just so that we're very clear the parcel tax has helped us educate four year olds in alam rock since 2015.
