good all right does anybody have anything to add the agenda no please have a motion to approve the agenda motion and lauren yes yes yes yes all right doug you're up board member code of comic review i will encourage and respect free expression of opinion by my fellow board members and will participate in boarded discussions in an open honest and respectful manner honoring differences of opinion or perspective all right thanks doug anybody have any questions on the consent agenda just real quick to i think two meeting committee meeting updates uh culture and climate committee met to review uh school student handbook and we're gonna be looking at more of that this summer and then uh tech committee met to talk about some cyber cyber security proposal from net 56 and we're gonna choose some other options it's pretty expensive option that they have so we're looking into more there but no no uh recommendations from either committee right now all right anybody or anything else can i please have a motion to prove the consent agenda motion sex yes yes yes yes do we have any public comments superintendents report mr gold all right uh jumping right into the strategic plan uh february 4th and 5th we had a group of over 30 stakeholders mets for uh about six hours on a friday and then all day on saturday and uh this one pager that i have in the packet is a summary of the plan that was developed of that time we have a mission statement has been changed to educate empower and engage all learners visions division one district one community growing confident creative and conscientious learners and then you can see the belief statements there that i think we are going to try to do a better job of keeping those belief statements out in front of people those are similar to belief statements we had the last plan but we didn't really uh so we tweaked them and rewrote them a little bit but uh these we it was really important for the group uh because there's some things that talk about diversity and our culture and um some really some things that we strongly believe that are in there and we want to keep those out from the community we have three three goals that came out of the plan last time we had five this time we had three and one is around student learning ensure high levels of growth for all learners and you can see underneath that goal in the blue there's three action steps there that we'll be focusing on uh those we can add to that but those are where we're going to start and then the green one cultivate a safe secure and inclusive learning environment that is responsive to the evolving needs of all stakeholders i think there was a lot of recognition that our community is changing and has been changing and that we need to be adapting to that so there's some there's some action plans there and black underneath that that we will be tracking and those action plans when you look at the packet there's some spreadsheets that are blank those action plans will be tracked in those spreadsheets each one of those lines that are in black underneath the goal has a spreadsheet and you'll then you will see how we're doing on each of those as we get started and then the the third goal is more of a financial operations goal optimize the operations for an improved educational experience for all students by effectively using all resources while maintaining fiscal responsibility so we have some action steps under there as well so it was a lot of hard work with the group and at this time i kind of sat back and i didn't want to be my plan so i tried to sit back and and take it in and let the group run with it and we had parents students and staff and i think uh i think it com ended up well i think we're gonna what we're really gonna focus on are these spreadsheets that you saw are gonna track the progress on this plan so they may have questions concerns mine only was the what is the standards-based reporting system that's that's the that's still focusing on our uh grading system improving the grading system but keeping grades like that that doesn't mean that yeah that doesn't mean getting rid of standards based and it could it could some it depends on how you do the standards based but uh it doesn't mean we would have to we still do standards based reporting and have grades so we're not so what do you mean by standards-based reporting that we parents will get a report of how kids are doing on our on the standards okay and uh which we're not doing right now across the board like state standards the uh the common core the yeah yeah the learning standards okay isn't that similar to what they got in primary elementary like there were listed standards on their report cards they're not the common core ones the uh the primary are not right okay and what happens if the standards reporting don't match with the grades that were issued by teachers and that's just all gonna have to be shaken out in the process for sure because if it's if we're using two different grading methods so i think what i'm when we get when it comes down to it one we want to we want to get to a system where we're reporting on how your kids are doing on the standards and then with the grade piece that's where we've got to figure out uh the next steps and tying that together for some districts the standard reporting is enough for others they try to continue with the grading piece and the grade's going to give you more of a measurement of compliance and responsibility of turning in stuff and that's a grading piece the standard's going to be more on learning what standards are they're learning and based on the summatives but that will all be shaken out in this process when we when we are shifting more and more to the standards-based reporting we will get input from staff from parents on on where they want the grading to fit into that and how it's going to work it's difficult and i'd say it's even harder because if we choose to do no grades then these kids are going to go to high school yeah their their meets their meet the standard performance here which seems like a decent score in high school it's a c yeah and now you're talking about affecting where kids go to college yeah and not them not having realistic expectations are their parents of what their abilities are yeah i think that's the balance good luck we will that's you know this is on here and these all these questions will have to be addressed as we get there okay for sure and my second thing was can you see if you can work out a way to update your evaluation for for next year evaluation for like the superintendent's evaluation actually yeah because and a lot a lot of the stuff we have in there is in here yeah it's just the way i think the way it's broken out is different okay so i'm glad glad you brought that up because i didn't i haven't i looked at i did a webinar last week uh on this because it's a it was superintendent evaluation along with the principal evaluations and uh taking it all digital um it would make your jobs a lot easier um and i'm looking i'm looking into it and then we would change we could put in whatever you guys want to put in okay cool but it would become all digital system where uh um right now i i mean kevin does most of it but you do a lot of work just to this year was way easier thanks to melissa yes okay so i was gonna show you this system before we do it but uh i'm looking to to get our principal evaluation piece improved as well and this one's called super eval and it's made for boards and superintendents but it also has principal and director piece so i was looking to make some improvement to our system and then i saw that one and actually a lot of lake county districts are now switching over to that oh cool so yeah we can definitely fix that all right anybody have anything else on the strategic plan no no all right please have a motion to approve the strategic plan motion second lauren and doug yes next item was i just want to recognize uh i'm not sure if the board is aware or not we did this year a fly-up day and where students in all grade levels on the second to last day of school spent some time as an hour to moving up to the grade level they're going to go to next year meeting their it was middle school they met all their teachers uh if it was primary elementary they met the teachers they're going to have next year and i i think the day was a huge success i want to i just want to recognize that to the board because the staff did a great job with it it was something new they had to do a lot of planning and they did it really did a nice job the kids were very excited about it and you know dr biancolano brought the idea to the table so want to recognize that and the the principals in all three buildings and the assistant principals really worked hard to make it happen so it was a lot of work you guys did a great job i think it was from what i saw you guys feel like it's a success good kids were so excited it was it was great yeah so my kids were definitely excited and i still don't understand how you guys could have possibly done it with every kid in each class going to different rooms and making it work but it sounds like it did yeah they they made it work and it was impressive it was very good so i just want to acknowledge that didn't know if you all knew that happened but it was a great great event that day it was a day it was a day when the eighth graders were gone because they graduated so we had an open grade level so we were able to push everybody up item c school safety this is something i've been look we've talked about before with we've talked about sro programs uh we've talked about different safety things throughout the years um uh in the last few months i've been in contact with fox lake uh police department again regarding this sro program is where i started uh the conversation again here's where we're at right now i just i just wanted to have some conversation i was hoping to bring a recommendation to you sometime either june or july now it's going to be july probably if i do um lake we're under the jurisdiction of lake county they have told me that they're not going to be able to do any type of sro program for us next year so they're not offering anything so i met with lake moore i contacted lake moore fox lake and brown lake since we have kids in all those areas fox lake i don't think is gonna work because uh and i'm gonna meet talk with him again tomorrow but um staffing issues they have because gavin and fox lake grade school district are also considering and they they would have to share a resource officer and would have to come out of fox lake and for them to provide another one for us i don't think it's going to happen so i'm skeptical of that one i did talk to lake moore they were very interested at least in a part-time sro and then uh tomorrow uh tomorrow or the or wednesday wednesday i think i'm meeting with round mike so they they initially were not and then they called me back and said they are so um so i just want to bring some proposals to you and see we're not able to get there there is a policy schools grant um and we are uh we're not able to get it for this year unfortunately what happened was in 2020 we did get approved with fox lake school district and us through the fox lake police department um when it when it got presented to us was i believe i hope i got this date right but i believe it was july of 2020.

quorum thank you mr frieza for being on miss amy miss whitney for being here tonight our first order of business our blue ribbon update mr smith mr president members board dr smith um demo has started on the west side of uh lc and uh actually today as i drove by the over a third of it is gone uh the weight room has been moved out and is in the center of the field house and that is for the demo start of the two-story come july 11th uh elsie jim actually it was all sanded today and they were doing the light uh sketches over the entire floor ready for new paint lc chillers arrive they're installing those and hopefully be up online soon ln edition is really going well uh it always makes uh good when you have one to follow so uh what we learned on lc ln has learned and it's moving forward commons area um completely tore up a lot of steel structures going in there for the second story edition and alien art rooms we're moving furniture in that area there's four of those rooms plus their studios new pool again it's going well roof is being completed and once that's done they will start the excavation of the pool on the inside of the building belzer and fall creek valley as well as lecc continue with the upgrades in hvac a lot of electrical wires and automation is going in those buildings this summer mr president school board members dr smith we're very pleased to bring to you tonight our proposal for the 2023 24 24 academic calendar and if you look on our first slide you'll see that our calendar committee has been hard at work we have representatives from different buildings levels divisions including but not limited to the elc's the elementaries middle school high school athletics performing arts curriculum and instruction in hr as well as other areas and our group met three times over the course of the past few months to review some parameters that you see listed here and these are just the things that we wanted as just ground rules and our students have 180 days our staff members 180 85 for certified staff members we want to keep our first student day in august preferably not a whole week so not starting on a monday but a partial week our last student day before memorial day also noting federal holidays e-learning days would be in place of previously calendared snow days and then looking at our breaks to be consistent with recent years and of course last week we had two wonderful graduations and having this scheduled in june mr president dr smith members of the board using those parameters we bring to you two recommendations for the 23-24 school year and the 24-25 school year they are very consistent with recent years as well as the upcoming school year that's already been board approved uh really the only thing i need to point out to you that's different from previous years is in november of 2024 tuesday november 5th that is an election day and the committee recommended a planned e-learning day for that day that's a presidential election year higher voter turnout some buildings are used as voter sites and was recommended for that year to plan an e-learning day on that election day so we present these to you for information this evening and welcome any questions or comments juneteenth similar to veterans day is actually celebrated on the actual day correct now this this summer june june 19th is a sunday so it will be observed on monday uh in the future when it happens to be a saturday it will be observed on the friday before it uh and but if it's during the week you'll be observed on the actual day thank you reimbursement resolution on our one-to-one lease update mr president dr smith members of the board we've always done our one-to-one leases the leases on our one-to-one devices this way in the past where we purchased them and then get reimbursed but the current awardee of the leases is requiring a reimbursement resolution in order to be able to pay us back for those so in front of you see that and i'll ask for your approval for that later in the meeting part five mr president members of the board dr smith i am pleased to bring to you part five uh that is focused on the board goal related to ilearn results and just as a a point of reference here at the beginning the island results are embargoed by the state at this point and so we will be talking about it just in general in terms of how our performance relates to the board goal um and at a future date we'll be able to share the proficiency rates and and overall data um after the state board of education meets on july 13th so um so no questions on this embargo information um we can certainly talk about the board goal because it's focused on growth and not overall percentages and so i can speak to the board goal this evening but not specific percentages okay thank you so just as a point of reference different from istep ilearn has four different reporting categories and your board goal was built around these four reporting categories two that are at proficient or above proficient one approaching proficiency and then below proficiency so your board goal is to increase by 10 percent the number of students designated as approaching at or above proficiency and so then by inference that means we need to decrease by 10 percent the number of students scoring in the below proficiency category the first bullet is the actual wording of your board goal the second one is by if inference that we have to decrease in below in order to increase and above so as always when we begin to analyze any standardized testing but particularly ilearn we have to look at who our demographics are and look for any shifts that we might have seen over the last year and so i'm sharing with you on this slide all of the demographic data for our students who tested in grades three through eight so you can see our overall testers increased by 114 students so similar to our adm increase that we've seen uh this school year um our black subgroup increased by 54.

now recognize our scholar leaders in addition to receiving an award they will have the honor of speaking with you today sydney borst will speak about her middle school experience and arush lola will speak about the future that lies ahead good afternoon all it is my honor to speak to you today on behalf of the west side middle school academy stem student body before progressing too far into my speech i did want to take the opportunity to thank dr leblanca miss blue the school's administration all the wonderful teachers and staff my fellow middle school peers and our families for their support and getting us to this point when asked to recount our time at west side my mind immediately became flooded with the spectrum of thoughts and emotions words and phrases that define the past three years for us included middle school orientation covid distance learning google meets hybrid learning math squaring social distancing quarantining and returned in-person learning i could easily go on and on listing words and phrases that describe what life was like for us but one word that you would not find on my list is normal i think we can all agree that our middle school experience has been anything but that so upon further reflection i thought of another word that i felt really described our middle school years and that was endure to endure is to remain firm under misfortune without yielding when i look out into the crowd of my friends and peers i marvel at a resiliency to endure though confronted by once in a lifetime world events we endure through our unbeatable sphere of perseverance we are an amazing collection of abilities passions and traits that shared an experience that has bonded us in ways that no one can truly appreciate i have heard people say that we are the generation that will have been forever changed by our world but believe that they have it wrong we are the ones because of what we have been through who will forever change this world our perseverance and will to endure in the face of difficulties has prepared us for life's next great challenges whether those challenges are the uncertainty of freshman year in high school or something different i can emphatically state that we will go there with confidence that there is nothing we can't handle i wanted to end my speech with a quote from henry ford who said life is a series of experiences each one of which makes us bigger even though sometimes it is hard to realize this for the world was built to develop character and we must learn that the setbacks and grieves which we endure help us and are marching onward i hope that everyone enjoys this special day today and celebrates the journey that it took for us to get here thank you [Applause] good afternoon families friends teachers administrators and most importantly the 8th grade class of 2022 my name is arush lola and it's an honor to speak at the graduate promotion ceremony today first and foremost i would like to thank my parents parents are the first teachers for anyone in life they were there for me throughout the course of my academic journey so far next i would like to thank all my teachers counselors and mentors for guiding me through the journey of preschool elementary and now middle school i shall always be thankful for that i would also like to thank my classmates and friends for making my middle school experience a memorable one today be the class of 2022 move on to the next significant schooling experience which is high school as a young boy i had many challenges such as english not being my native language distractions and diversions as i grew up i overcame all of those challenges by putting in hard work in elementary school my interest in learning various subjects and facts about our world rose this was the start of a journey coming into middle school i had the great op i had a great opportunity getting into west side middle school academy especially global studies i was always interested in learning about the world and being in global studies helped me better on have a better understanding of world issues and more knowledge about globalization it all started as a fairly normal sixth grade school year with good learnings and fun experiences sixth grade was a grade that just flew by but in the end what followed was a completely unprecedented scenario the coronavirus pandemic not only was this a challenge for me but it was probably a challenge for everyone present in the ceremony and everywhere else in the world social distancing and isolating ourselves for many months and many families struggling with the virus were some of the many obstacles that the whole world had to face and eventually overcome however as a class we all endured the challenges that were posed by distance learning through online meetings office hours with teachers and even school counseling videos we the students were able to cope with the mental turmoil of covid learning to adapt to new changes being common positive and challenging times and utilizing this time for our advantage were some of the key lessons and learnings that we all embraced as a group our current 8th grade class should strive to become the best versions of ourselves and achieve greater heights the practice of setting a growth mindset and not being afraid to showcase our faults is an easy but effective way to become a better you the willingness to achieve good grades isn't the only thing needed to become a successful student but the determination of learning new things every day is key that too with a good character as martin luther king jr once said intelligence plus character that is the goal of true education the driving force behind all of our 8th graders should be our curiosity to explore our passions which will put us in great positions in high school and our future endeavors curiosity is something that comes by instinct not something that's implied by force we just had to open up and let our mind speak when we're curious we can not only learn more information and facts but we can also find our likes and what we would pursue as a career whether it's long term or short term like walt disney the founder of disney once mentioned we keep moving forward opening new doors and doing new things because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths let these three wonderful years spent in west side middle school academy be a stepping stone and proper foundation for each one of us wherever we go for high school and beyond thank you once again for this wonderful opportunity to represent our 8th grade group it is an honor that i'll truly cherish and learn from signing off arush lola [Applause] thank you both you did a great job now i would like to introduce mrs jennifer blue assistant principal to recognize these students [Applause] good afternoon we are proud to present sidney borst and arush lola with the plaques as recognition for your accomplishments [Applause] so dr leblanc is keeping time on me so i have to be very careful to stick to the script however i'm not sticking to the script i just wanted to mention how very very special this class is because you all 8th grade students and i began west side at the exact same time so we've been through a lot together and we are here now at this point i'd like you to think back for a moment to when you first started at westside middle school academy many of you were concerned that you would get lost or that you wouldn't be able to handle the homework or wouldn't be able to handle your new friends or make new friends the building looked large compared to your elementary schools yet here you are at the end of eighth grade we learned how to manage your time you've learned how to be creative and how to work in groups to solve problems many of you have earned honor roll or high honor roll status at least once while you were participating in a variety of activities outside of school you have each had your challenges and successes as you've moved through your middle school years and now it's time for high school and you are ready the choices you have made and continue to make will determine who you will be i hope that you will choose to make a positive difference in your family school and community as you leave us today the best wishes of all of the faculty and staff at westside middle school academy good luck to you all and now ladies and gentlemen the moment you have been waiting for is finally here the presentation of the west side middle school academy class of 2022 [Applause] the class will be presented by eighth grade teachers mr rovnak miss ferreira and mrs calvida the students will be honored by the administration and eighth grade core academic teachers congratulations [Applause] members of the board of education mr walleston dr casemiro mrs truchas mr roach dr labanca and mrs blue having met the requirements of and you know what was going on july of 2020. and uh heather friselli the superintendent fox lake and i talked with their chief about it and we were we were just trying to keep school get schools open we had no idea what was going to happen we had no idea what kind of funding we were getting from the state and this wasn't a pay all grant it was a matching grant so we had a we had to turn it down in uh 2020. and then this year we were going to apply i was i was trying to apply for it again last month and found out that because we turned it down they won't let's apply for three years so and they did tell i was i explained the situation to them and they said you're in the same situation a lot of schools are because nobody took the grant in 2020.

we looked at every employee group we actually contracted with a an external service to to provide that information for us and made some adjustments at that time since then we've we've provided annual increases on that matrix we've looked at a couple of individual groups that we clearly had some shortfalls during the the last six years bus drivers once and and nurses twice during that six year period but other than that before last year there was just the the increase to the whole matrix the pay matrix based on usually based on what we've bargained for the teachers as well that percentage um and then last summer you know that we came to you and asked to increase the entire matrix nine percent here we are again a year later in facing some real labor market challenges particularly for the the bottom end of our support staff pay our classified paid matrix our relatively low starting rate is one that we just can't continue at 11 22 for a teaching assistant to come in right now in this labor market is just not something that's sustainable thank you so what we did instead of contracting with an external group we collected the data from several different organizations during the the last few months probably three months both the the region that is around us regionally all the way down to the river and over to the to the eastern part southeastern part of the state so those that included some districts that we do consider peers to us like new albany floyd but also gave us some regional comparisons but we also looked at region 8 which is the indianapolis market most people assume that doesn't apply to us because it includes all those donut districts but it also includes some very small rural districts in that area as well and then probably the the largest the best broadest comparison group we were able to look at is we participated in a survey by an external company and if you participated and sent in your data you got all of the data back from every district that participated so 139 out of the approximate 290 school districts participated in that and we we got that data just about a month ago started pouring through that and evaluated all of those districts against our 121 positions that are listed on our on our pay matrix and came up with these recommendations first we want to raise the the floor the pay floor for classified staff from 11 22 to 14 i know a lot of districts are talking about five dollars or sorry 15 but when we looked at being able to do that for such a large number of people we just couldn't get to that 15 mark at this time and this this would require adjustments for all grades five through about halfway through the experience level on grade nine and that includes from a from a numbers standpoint the number of employees by far the largest groups tas being one of them cafeteria staff custodians were in that group so when you look at the number of people that work for us the majority of them from a classified staff standpoint are in that grade five through eight five through nine um the increases for that group range between seven percent um for the folks that have about five years experience on grade nine to 25 that that's the 11 22 to 14 is approximately 25 percent and then our recommendation is to ensure that no classified staff receives less than a six percent raise starting july 1st then the last step we took several of us sat in a room for for more hours than i than i want to remember and went line by line through every employee group and looked at our employee group compared to those three three different pieces of data i shared with you and looked at them and said are we comparable and competitive with other groups for this specific this specific job title and any of those that we weren't we said okay what's the appropriate line on the matrix to make us competitive with these other districts and then made that adjustment and so this is the current support staff matrix still goes down to grade one even though we haven't had anyone on grade one for several years now starts on on grade five for um for mainly teaching assistant positions and then this is what the new matrix will look like see it better now because we started at grade one fourteen dollars up to 28.74 at the top end more detail in there than what you than what you need but essentially it starts there at fourteen dollars i love the the graphic uh the proposed matrix and i wondered um if you could kind of geographically tell us where the 25 percent increases are and where the six percent increases are sure so starting in the top left at the the grade five with zero years of experience i should have explained that too across the top as the years of experience um the 25 would be the um zero years of experience and five so going from 11 22 to 14 is approximately and then as you go across it slowly it slowly decreases until you get to about on grade nine on row nine at years of experience five is where it hits that six percent for the first time and then essentially everyone else if they stay at their same current grade everyone else would receive a six percent increase and generally for most of our employees they're they're moving up a year of experience every year when when is that recognized and when does that happen july one as well okay and it was really that was the reason for our uh our rush to get this to you for this month so that we don't have to make changes twice and change uh about 1100 support staff that we have to manually go in and change each of their their pay rates thank you so for further clarification we actually don't have grades 0 through 4 any longer correct okay i i won't even ask why we start with number five i'm i can only imagine we had the same conversation in 2016.

our hispanic subgroup increased by almost two to one compared to our black subgroup and with a 103 additional students a decrease of 61 white students a modest increase for our multiracial look at our ell increase so these are students who are designated according to wida as english language learners and so we can see 122 additional students that are testing this year compared to last year so this is very similar to the 13 increase in el students that we've also seen in our weed of data a little less sped students this year however look at our free and reduced numbers for this year so as we think about that 10 percent growth goal we have a much larger subgroup for free and reduced this year than we did last year and as we think about our families we've seen some of the biggest increases at our middle schools and if you'll think back to last year our middle schools were not in school full-time really only a third of the students were were in the building at any given time and everybody received free lunch last year this year that was not the case everybody was back and so um we think we're seeing increased free and reduced uh lunch numbers because we've got all of our students back and to fill out the the paperwork now makes a lot more sense that we're back in our regular routines so as we begin to look at the board goals so this is ela and we're focused on growth moving students out of below proficiency moving students into at or above proficiency and so you can see the subgroups the grade levels and subgroups in which we reach the board goal so third grade ela white students fourth grade ela special education students fifth and sixth grade both had white subgroups that were meeting that 10 percent or above growth the information below that is without getting into specifics just generally 12 of our 13 schools had individual subgroups that met the the 10 percent growth goal so somewhere in the district we had 10 subgroups black that reached 10 percent growth 13 hispanic and so forth throughout the rest of the demographics and and so this is really really exceptional in a year that is hold harmless from the state of indiana so that was passed at the state legislature level that there won't be accountability assigned to these scores yet we set very ambitious goals for our district in a 10 growth that would be ambitious in a regular year let alone ambitious in a year where we had the delta variant decreased attendance and so on and so forth however you can see in the subgroups where our work lies moving forward in order to achieve equitable student outcomes we need to have on the previous slide we need to have our black and hispanic and ell subgroups growing at the highest levels and so that will be our goal moving forward in math our proficiency rates again without getting specific you can see where we we scored from one year to the next in terms of overall at or above proficiency rates so seeing some increases um in five of six grade levels and four or five cohorts with um in in those four grade levels all racial subgroups increasing in math you can see um and i think i've reported to you before that our greatest learning loss or our greatest unfinished learning was in the area of mathematics last year and you can see we're rebounding and really rebounding across multiple subgroups across several grade levels in the district and i did want to point out even though it's not in green that our third graders particularly our black sub group had an eight percent increase and so when we are moving our largest subgroups which are black hispanic ell subgroups we know that we're making good progress and so third grade both in ela and in math showed exceptional growth this is that that same data from our individual schools i'm really proud that we've got 13 of 13 that can report individual subgroups that met the 10 percent goal and so that tells us as a district that our systems are moving in the right direction when we have all of our schools that have at least one subgroup that met the 10 growth goal that ambitious goal that that was set and you can see that the numbers are significantly higher in math in terms of the individual subgroups we had 18 black subgroups across the district 18 hispanic that met that growth goal at individual schools within the district and the overall number for math is really important too that overall are all the sub subgroups put together so we had 15 different data points within our schools that had that 10 percent growth goal for overall as we look at the proficiency rates we can see we have improved in every single grade level when you do a year to year comparison again that third grade plus seven percent is highly significant with all racial subgroups increasing when we moved to the middle school seventh and eighth grade we also had growth with the largest subgroups subgroups increasing and that piece is really important when our middle schools are moving both their black and hispanic subgroups that's that's a good indication for us however where our work is is in that cohort um and particularly at the middle school um with our cohort data um that we've got to increase those proficiency rates not just moving students out of the below category but really getting them into that at or above proficiency rate and that's the work of of our middle schools for the coming year so in terms of of next steps this is just an initial analysis as i said the the data is embargoed at this point we are having conversations within the curriculum and instruction team as we look to support the buildings with their data analysis i think the second bullet is really really important this has been a challenging year and we like i said had the delta variant lots of quarantine going on at the beginning of the school year and there are celebrations in every one of our schools and the the first rule of data analysis is look for your for your wins look for your celebrations because you can build on those and i'm really pleased that we do have in every school pockets that have met the 10 percent ambitious growth goal the the second or the third bullet is our culturally responsive instruction that is a necessity um and that we're launching in july at our lawrence learning summit july 18th with principal cafe and then dr mayfield will be the other bookend on thursday of that week with a focus on positive identity development increasing that student engagement for our students and the fourth bullet and we've seen this for several years even pre-pandemic that the schools with higher rigor diagnostic scores show more growth and higher proficiency on ilearn so those two are very very closely related and so the more we push on our instructional framework the higher results that we're going to get and then in terms of curriculum we have a new english language arts core curriculum being implemented in the coming year and under the leadership of dr anderson we're continuing our program review for math particularly our middle school math and as always we're focused on that research-based intervention and supports for helping our students move out of that below proficiency category would be happy to entertain questions or discussion at this point well to be quite honest i really prefer that we wait till this information is released because i know we're going to have questions that's going to get real close to we can't talk about that so because we're going to deep dive in how we really good information for us from a district standpoint but as a board with all the hard work we know is taking place troy we got a whole lot of questions that we just probably can't be bring up right now so let's just be careful with with being a public media just be careful with that so if there's any high level questions we'll ask those but it's hard not to ask the question that we really want to ask right you're not down into the devil you're talking district you're i do have a question on the third bullet point the lawrence learning summit and the positive identity development workshop um are those in person this year yes those are in person we do have a virtual option for some of our sessions but those particular sessions are in person and will this be will those be held during jump start or after after jump the week of july 18th so after jump start so everybody is yeah okay thank you and we have about 500 teachers that are registered at this point great any other high-level district questions award i just have one just kind of um all-encompassing um is the general feel that one of the big drivers for growth is our commitment to have the in-person learning on these tests i mean um over last year the growth that we've seen yeah there's no question that our students need to be in school forever and so when you compare our results um even in 2020 um with our formative assessment data we see that our students need to be in person yes for sure thank you absolutely so this topic will likely come back up when can we talk about this deep dive the next state board of education meeting is july 13th july 13th okay okay just a little teaser this evening we'll bring it this will be on the topic for ourselves we're shifting gears we're already in the 22-23 all right no stopping us right now we'll pause for this but we are moving on into the next phase so as troy pointed out the state board is not going to give any accountability with it because there was state legislation in the past that they cannot so they just want to get it right yep and and so we already have the data we're already reviewing it it's just not public yet okay so the public needs to fully understand that correct so we'll do another full agenda item on this once it's been released curriculum part five rev one but we'll start to start new numbers with the new school year this is five for the 21-22 school any other questions or comments on our district performance troy thank you for this information and again we will we'll discuss a bit in details once we can thank you you're welcome proposed resource adoption for our next level programs of study thank you mr president members of the board dr smith as we have brought to you in a series of presentations we are adopting new courses for next level programs of study and these are primarily cte courses that director mari swain leads for us and mr handy harshes our director of secondary education works closely with her and he will be presenting the resources for consideration this evening good evening mr president dr smith and members of the board um as you can see on this slide um just review of um the law around how we set procedures and review our resources on the next slide you will see just a quick explanation of those next level programs of study that is that series of three to four courses that students can take during their high school career that leads them on a specific career pathway most of those courses also give our students opportunities to earn college credit and also some industry recognized certifications and all students that complete a next level program of study are prepared of course for meaningful employment in a career pathway when they graduate completing an nlps also meets the cte requirement in box three of our indiana graduation requirements so the process much like our other resource adoptions and recommendations um i think that's supposed to be 2021 the fall of 2021 we began in phase two of our nlps rollout meetings were held that included representation from lawrence central lawrence north and mackenzie center for innovation and technology we did a review this spring and we met to determine those specific pl excuse me the plcs for those pathways also met weekly to review and prepare the plan for this phase ii implementation and they finally made their final recommendations for these concentrator courses so on the next slide the mackenzie center for innovation technology plc team developed a document that would help make sure that they're aligning those indiana standards to the governor's workforce cabinet and uh this is an ongoing process this is phase two and we will then move in later on to phase three the following slides will include and there are many all of the courses that will be offered the course code for the state of indiana and then of course the resource that is being recommended ms mari swain was unable to be with us this evening if you have specific questions about any of these specific resources i am happy to field those questions but i will tell you that i will likely have to follow up with her about the specifics uh and the folks but all of her teachers teacher leaders were around the table and had great input as they reviewed these resources that they're recommending to you this evening so at this time i'm happy to field any questions what any questions or comments or any who's pitch hitting which does not but you still have to play it andy so um on our next level programs of study i guess the only question i would have was there any consultation with institutions of higher learning to make sure that they align that is a great question and i do know that mckenzie works closely with their advisory board um i i do believe that they're okay that is part of their process not only from higher education but also from industries great thank you are there conversations around concentrators that might not even exist today i mean things are changing rapidly in terms of our workforce workforce skills workforce needs i mean it's a brand new work day for many in fact a couple of these on here i'm like wow some of these things to me might be a little bit out of date but uh are there some that we remove every once in a while well that's probably a question for miss wayne i guess it is and really student demand drives much of that and so there are some that have a much smaller footprint now than what they did maybe two or three years ago and others that were growing into a larger footprint based on exactly what you're talking about however what you're seeing this this evening really is a directive from the state and so we are tied very closely to the pathways that are developed at the state level and this is a requirement that you implement exactly what is within the pathways that are given to us my other question is i don't see a pathway here for some of the trades plumbing hvac electrical construction and i know one [Music] um statistic i've heard says that within 15 years 85 percent of some of those workers will be retiring are fellow boomers um and are we working on that piece as well so you do see within phase two um it's on a previous slide the the principles of construction trades and so as we think about the three different phases that's phase two then in phase three are those specific traits that that you're thinking about and so look forward to that that's a preview for for next year um where you'll see very specific trades to align with the lawrence economy thank you for that clarification i missed that that's a good point let's recap so phase one phase two phase three that's the state right that's right that's how we're approaching that yeah that's how we approach it phase one would be what so phase one is what we brought to you last year and that's very much around principles courses uh many of the courses um were previously introduction right then we had to do a curriculum shift to become principals to align with the next level programs of study and so um strategically specific courses were picked um in that phase one and now we're in phase two um and so some additional principles like this slide has um construction trades automotive service collision repair but then you also see some upper level classes so there's some early childhood classes that will be held at our early learning centers as we're growing even our own pipeline around early childhood and so those are some upper level classes that are in this phase too then in phase three will really be the final phase and that's where we'll be bringing some capstone additional capstone opportunities as well as flushing out what that construction trades piece looks like and this initiative so when students complete these concentrators they are else will go right into the workforce with certain certificates in order to college with credits correct correct correct how is that different from what we what we used to do it's much more strategic and much more streamlined and so what we used to do is a student might take intro to culinary and then the next time they take intro to transportation and then they take intro to business and they just dabble and really don't come away with anything meaningful anything employable any credential that they could take to the workforce or to a higher education what this does is really align students so you can dabble a little bit and we're pushing some of the intro courses down to middle school so we've got some dabbling going on in middle school now um some dabbling a little bit in freshman year but then by sophomore year we're trying to get you into a pathway that you feel good about that you feel like you're talented in and could see yourself doing and then you take the three or four courses that are part of the pathway and then you've got choices employment higher education something meaningful that's good i want a community and everybody to understand i was part of this conversation we was talking about students just having a broad of everything and really nothing and what could school districts start doing to help students to understand there is a clear pathway if you stay in sequence now that's not to say that you might go out and do something else but at least you un have an understanding how the sequence works and if you decide to choose something else understand there's a sequence to becoming a success in terms of whatever you pursue so just want to make sure everybody understand what we're trying to do here well what the status tracks is trying to do yeah absolutely okay any other questions or comments i do like the idea of this sequence for one profession that we all should be trumpeters for and that is early childhood and principles of teaching 100 that we should be more cohorts classes that we could think of when students are sitting in front of wonderful teachers in lawrence township absolutely grow our own okay any other questions or comments thank you mr harsher on that let's let's let's change around here a little bit hundred grand let's go to our proposed boys volleyball and girls russian sports this is for 2022 and 2023 school year that's right good evening mr president members of the board dr smith uh exciting activity with coming out of the indiana high school athletic association back in early may they for the first time are recognizing what they're calling emerging sports and those those two they're looking at are boys volleyball and girls wrestling emerging sports is a new term for them and you can see there's those bullet points they have the rule books coaches rule meetings coverage under the catastrophic medical program and then all rules and policies now there's not a state tournament as of yet uh that would be the next step and would become a real sport but that's that's kind of the general guidelines of emerging sport boys volleyball little history lesson for you may not know but we've had it uh here in lawrence township for some time uh lawrence north had it for a long time um and in 2010 were even the state runner-ups um lawrence central has not fielded it yet but uh i've already talked to their leadership and and with the state athletic association starting to recognize it that does create uh a little more excitement around it and some credibility to it so more more students will be involved um that's a spring sport and uh and that might get some kids that might play basketball or another activity that could get them get them out for the team um there are 42 teams statewide currently doing boys volleyball a little history lesson for you there uh those are the ten sports currently offered by the i trista boy see most of them been quite quite a while i showed you the same slide uh back when we as a district started recognizing lacrosse a few years ago and so you'll see that that's that's another now that the state athletes hasn't done lacrosse yet but we'll deal with that another time uh girls wrestling uh neither lcrln has had a girl wrestler this year but they have both had individual girls wrestling uh over the years and you still see that uh around where there'll be some girls come out for the team um the wrestling coaches association began sponsoring a girls wrestling state tournament this year and that's the bottom bullet there you see the 113 schools of around 400 high schools participating um so it really has had a lot of traction and there's a lot of a lot of excitement in that world you'll see there in olympics started doing it 2004 so we again we think with the credibility of the athletic association sponsoring it we'll have more girls coming out for wrestling and then there's the ten sports currently uh sponsored by the athletic association the institutional support we currently do for boys volleyball now in case you're curious i don't have girls wrestling up there because we don't have any girls wrestlers right now um but if we did have girls wrestlers and as we do for boys volleyball right now we give practice space and of course we do background checks on any adult that's going to be interacting with our students and in coaching what we'd be looking to do is if the board of education does recognize these sports uh we would have these additional items as a school district we would provide coaching stipends transportation administrator support that would mean they would fall into the athletic department the athletic directors would be helping hire and uh evaluate coaches game game officials etc and then of course we'd be recognizing here at the board meetings because we'd expect them to be reaching some level of achievement that that would merit coming here to the board meetings uh the coaching stipends what what kind of monies involved if we would recognize them uh boys volleyball would mirror the girls um that would be a total of seventeen thousand dollars if they had all three levels uh varsity jv and freshman and then same with wrestling um it would be an additional assistant coach we would look at wrestling at this point if we just had a couple girls come out one girl three four girls come out we would look at very much like we do boys and girls swimming right now boys and girls swimming two separate sports by and large they're always together they practice together it's the same head coach same assistant coaches uh they all the meats are together very much that's how the wrestling will be structured now we did discuss and we don't know how many weight classes are going to sponsor but if we do hit a threshold where we're fielding enough girls to compete as a team then we'll be adding a head coaching stipend and more assistant coaching stipends now it could be like swimming or be the same same individual or it could be different um but facility wise um both volleyball in the spring and the gymnasium wrestling in the wrestling room the only cost we'll be looking at is that transportation costs and some administrative costs and then the stipends and here's our timeline we're looking at tonight's our first reading we look at our second reading in two weeks and then if if approved then they would immediately start up their their summer conditioning and whatnot um and then there's the those are the probable dates and looking at where the the current wrestling practice starts and then the volleyball first practice that's in that same ballpark that most of the spring sports are starting baseball and whatnot so with that i'd be happy to field questions about boys volleyball and girls wrestling as emerging sports question dr nez is quite excited about it so are there any questions or comments are you going to coach one of these i i don't tend to but any time we can get more of our young people involved and more engaged in school the better and so it is exciting i love that we're doing it and considering it it's always a good thing for young people to be around so uh being at school more often about more adults and realizing their full potential questions or comments we have any idea of the interest are we in good shape i think so we're like we we have it happening in boys volleyball already and again and talking to folks that i'll see we think we'll have some more there um yeah and boys volleyball a lot of that you know quite honestly a lot of these kids are kids that may have played basketball and they they got cut they didn't quite make the threshold but they're tall and they can jump right they aren't quite there well here's another opportunity for them um and so you know those those kids enjoy it you know and again if the credibility there that's just going to create more excitement in the girls wrestling um you know winter sports right now we have basketball and swimming um and then cheerleading and so that's that's a just a whole nother avenue for him and again that's that is i've been surprised at how popular that has become it just it really has it's you saw 113 schools uh had girls participating this year that that's a lot questions um yeah this is great um one thing that came to mind was would this require any modifications to our upcoming apparel agreement if we're adding additional teams good question yeah uh it wouldn't um the the agreement we had this last time included some sports not all sports as far as buy one get one free but then we do have that percentage we get off and we would still it'd still help us out we'd still be ordering uniforms for the same vendor and uh still realizing cost savings thank you good question no other questions comments you ever call me doc smith i always just want to remind the board anytime we talk about salaries and stipends uh that goes to carla johnson and the negotiated agreement we have with the lea so when dr nesbitt talks about coaching stipends we we have a scale that we negotiate with our teachers associates i just want to put that on the record okay so that kind of determines where where we go with that we have to negotiate that good deal excited it's good news i think for for everybody good opportunities just in time for these new uh high school gyms that's right anything else thank you dr nesbitt thank you i'll classify employee handbook updates for our 2022-2023 school year and then we'll go ahead and go into the student handbook as well good evening president mcgregor dr smith and members of the school board this evening i bring to you information our classified handbooks some of our revisions under the classified handbook include our holiday pay medical days vacation days attendance violations workers compensation which is a change in making sure that our classified is matching our certified employees code of conduct progressive discipline we also have our food services handbook and we have various pages with updates you know minimum of names and phone numbers are being changed personal days lifting requirements our dress code policy school delays and closings in our food service handbook also our payroll procedures and then a full disclosure statement that we've received from the usda has been added to our food service handbook those are just some of the notes that are to our handbooks for the updates in our transportation handbook there are no major changes that have been received are there any questions is the school day closing does that change like uh food service employees are not paid when we do schedule learning we don't we don't do count food for that is that new no that's not new okay okay okay board any questions or comments on our classified handbook no updates to the transportation handbook but are there any questions okay student handbook good evening president mcgregor mcgregor dr smith and members of the board i have a few highlights updates for our student handbooks for the 2223 school year for the elc and elementary handbooks very minimal updates uh one thing we just wanted to switch the language from electronic devices to one-to-one computing devices so that change was made in a couple of areas we also had a few additions under visitors visitors and volunteers we wanted to add that only one one person is allowed into the classroom at a time as a visitor and that we would not want to have siblings who join that the principal or destiny may be present that there would be no interaction with staff or other students in the classroom from from a visitor and then a note about confidentiality and then for the middle schools we had some clarifications regarding uh what time a student is considered tardy so clarifying that it's not just if the student is dropped off after 8 50 but that they needed to be in class and ready to go at 8 50.

because why would you you know going to pay for that and you didn't know if we didn't have school open and so so that's a situation we're in so i i just want to be able to tell i want to be able to put before you in july if we want to add a school resource office to this campus this is what it's going to cost us this is how we're going to do it you know and then we can decide i'm just trying to get the figures out and then next year i can apply for that grant and we will do that so so i just want to give you an update i am considering hiring a couple at least to start with at the middle school kind of modeling after something grant has been doing that's been helping them a little bit with some uh we have issues in the during the day at the middle school with kids just kind of wandering they just will get out of a classroom and wander and go into bathrooms and they're doing things in bathrooms that should you know we don't have so they're um we're considering hiring a couple of what they call what i would call para safeties that would basically be helping us out in the hallways at lunchtime just being uh hall monitors and uh bathroom monitors just uh i feel like we we might need that so i'm looking at doing that possibly open see if we get any any it's it's all this impacts the budget but trying to fix some cultures things i'm seeing here at the middle school so that's an update there i'll hopefully have something for you in july any questions on that or concerns about me looking into sro no how many how many are you thinking of like offhand to start with paris no the sros just one just one from campus for campus or for the one that would be for all three buildings i'll serve the buildings yeah and to have us to have that um i had i started sro program when i was in my when i was an assistant principal at a high school and uh i initially was a little skeptical um but to have that law enforcement those law enforcement eyes in the buildings to see safety things that we're not seeing that we're doing wrong you know things like it was helpful and but it depends on who you get in the seat who's going to do that job because they also you want this to be a person that kids are going to trust and build relationships with kids and that's more what happens at the prime elementary is they you know try to build the trust of that officer and um but yeah we would look at best case we have one that served the all three buildings you mentioned part-time how would that work uh lake moore posed the idea of trying to do a dual position with round lake where they would so they were going to talk around like about like where lake moore might provide an officer for three days a week around like two days a week okay i told him i wouldn't want any more than two you want really comes down this person's got to be here regular enough kids get to know him so two officers might be okay one would be best but if they both both departments because like more you know just shooting off the cuff he's like i could use somebody part-time as a detective here and and part-time in the schools if round lake can do something similar then um then they could team up okay so so that's the school safety update uh board meeting calendar dates are there in the exhibit 12.

i remember i was asking the question in 2016. so perhaps we still label them differently in the future maybe in a number i don't know and so the next slide shows um shows the cost and what our request for you is this evening oh i'm sorry no i put some examples in here so here's just a few randomly selected four examples just to show you give you an idea of what kinds of increases we're talking about here a special ed teaching assistant who's in their fifth year currently makes um i'm sorry back last year before we did the nine percent increase made 1106 and then right now makes 1265 after we both adjusted the four to fourteen dollars and for special ed tas we moved them to grade eight from i believe grade six is where they were to make them competitive again from from a comparison district standpoint the proposed hourly rate uh as of july 1 would be 1534.

additional highlights we wanted to clarify with technology with uh lost or stolen devices that we wanted those to be immediately returned to the technology office rather than to lost and found so just a clarification there and then we added some additional information about the directory so more detailed information shared around our board policy on directory information so there was just some some more verbage included there for clarity and then just as an example under bus rules one of the bus rules is do not smoke we wanted to include that this includes electronic cigarettes and vape pens and then under [Music] just a couple of other clarifications there and then um that initially we at one point we had said that we did not want electronic devices to be used during school hours obviously that is not going to happen in this day and age so the use of technology during instruction is at the discretion of the classroom teacher because we do have some teachers that allow and encourage want students to have their phones out for one reason or another but then there are other situations where that's not appropriate so that's at the discretion of the classroom teacher that's when we get calls on yes yeah and and that's why let's be clear in his hand with what we're saying yeah yeah that that does come up a lot at the schools then uh we did add under application of consequences that school administration may recommend recommend that a student go to an outside service such as reached for youth or some of the programming offered through fairbanks if there's a substance issue so we included that and then for the high schools um that was all it looks like a lot but really it is just switching out um the policy that is related to tech not acceptable use guidelines so it looks like a lot but it's just that some old policy language was taken out and replaced with new policy language and then the last major update was from health services uh we previously require we previously required community health network with our partners there a consent form to be on file for every student every year which was extremely problematic because we just didn't get them back so we changed that to be that the only the only time that they need to have a form is if the student is being issued specific medication or treatment and then that is it questions let's talk about door dash so it's my first time having phone calls about parents at door dash i don't have that like that's what what are you talking about doing this now yeah let's just make sure everybody because the call was about some teachers allowed some teachers didn't because they didn't want kids to be so let's just put on the record what's the rule food being delivered the record is that no student or parent should order doordash and that if if that rule is broken the the food may be confiscated right so that that is not that is not an acceptable practice it has been quite an issue i have a question with that also um is there food allowed at all to be brought in if a parent brings the food you also clarify that members of the board we have food service here we shouldn't be in the habit of bringing outside food unless it's been approved in question yeah it's always yeah that's always an issue so we want to stick with what's in our our our handbook which should speak to that for our families and also i want to remind the board my people didn't speak to this remember items that are brought to you from the handbook have been reviewed by the school officials but also we look at our policy and in the third phase we make sure we vet through our our school council through our attorneys so those are good questions uh i see food service backer cringing we really don't want to bring outside food there's a number of reasons why we don't want to do that without it being approved so we just want to keep that in mind mr mcgregor i'll give you an answer on doordash no okay i i have a question i didn't see dress code anywhere here is this in the handbook where did where did i miss that there weren't any changes but yes there is a section on dress code and there's been a lot of discussion you know nationally that dress code can um can target women you know over men do we have some equity in our dress code you know that was part of the discussion as the administrators were reviewing the handbook and you know um that that was part of it that it seems like there are more um items that are related to what is traditionally considered female dress morix whether there is or it's just perceived that there are more accessories more different layers of of clothing that can be used it was part of the part of the discussion um we may have had a some slight additions i didn't highlight them just now but we might have had a couple of slight things but there there weren't any major changes to what we already had because this actually came up this comes up pretty much every year so we we are very cognizant of that where where is dress code in in this handbook you know i don't have the actual handbook up here with me now but okay trust me it's in there madam vice president i would think so i would have been highly recognized using it mr shreves just shared with me that it's on page 16 of the middle school handbook yes i was on 19 i was close i'm bored i would highly recommend if we're discussing dress code which typically is very controversial yeah that we have a separate committee to look at something like that that has not come up to me as an issue as superintendent so i would advise us if we're going to take a look at that that we would delve into that through a district-wide committee that becomes a very controversial topic and if something would come up between now and and next year we'll look at it individually we always look at that and always leave the discretion if you look in our handbook to our school administration but it hasn't risen to me as a topic for discussion at this level of the board unless i'm missing something bored you haven't shared that with me nobody needs to come the reason we bringing these up dr smith is because these are the phone calls we get from parents one on they're not really like let's have a task for us they just can you explain to me how come i can't send food to my son or daughter to today and it's because it's in the student handbook it supports that no question we get phone calls about dress from parents maybe just one set of parents or so but these are the questions we get from the community they're not asking for task force we all just want to make sure people understand items are addressed in a student handbook right for all of us to abide by and if we do need to talk about something we will address that as a district and as always our student handbook it's a working document because you know we we live and learn we you know things come up we things are brought to our attention that that maybe we hadn't thought about it in the same way that that a parent luckily you know will share with us and so it's it's a working document and we're always willing to review and i know that at middle schools there was there were some issues with different teachers having different ideas about the dress code and not only that but do different teachers have different ideas about the dress code based on your subgroup and um i just want to make sure that every educator in our system understands exactly what the dress code is from their building leader and are on the same page with all students right we have the same situation with the cell phones with different expectations for the cell phone so just trying to bring everybody together and and um let let the the big folks and the little folks know that this is what our policy is and this is what we need to follow so great thank you any other question or comments or miss moose thank you for this good conversation if not neo policy update second pinch you know at the grocery store so please just um utilize the service it's at school and non-school sites mrs the secret sauce today just came up miss robron rolanda brown is in charge of our summer servings program so uh board the person who does that is not roger smith but bro brown so and thank you miss brown for feeding our kids because i know it's a big job you mr freezey thank you sir miss mustin i just would like to say that graduation is always very special and um every year when we start walking into the field house i get goose bumps everywhere it's so exciting to know so many of our students have reached that culmination in their k-12 career um to see their happy faces the fabulous shoes the stoles that they wear and the ribbons and you know the smiling faces and even those that are a little reticent you know that make make an effort to get across that stage um it's very exciting and just to say thank you to all who helped with the lawrence township foundation golf outing this last week as well thank you it's bucket i second everything that was said thank you very much and the puckett children approved the summer servings they had it during swimming at the y so it was yummy to them so thank you to all thank you again it's just a special thank you to ms blankenship for taking care of us at the graduation before and after and doing it [Laughter] thank you for that and the best information i always get at the graduations is when i walk out and parents say thank you for getting my kid here let me share that with you all because i always say i'm just the person who hand out the diploma there's a whole group of people in lawrence township that you should say thank you to because they got your students across that stage and i think that's the most powerful message i ever get when a parent say come up and say thank you for helping my child graduate from high school so we thank you for all you do with that and i have fun at graduation so thank you so much as excited as they are behind me so on behalf of all these families we say thank you for all that you do to get them across that stage thank you i just really don't have an appointment to them but they don't smile right superintendent says kudos to all uh mr mcgregor we do have a board meeting in two weeks i do want to warn the board that we will come with additional celebrations uh um so these are set for next year second mondays we have one tuesday meeting um just as a note this is a time to talk as a board about continuing our practice of starting open session immediately following end of close session which i i seem to think it's gone okay um i agree live streaming board meetings holding board meetings here in the cafeteria so those are all things that you guys can talk about you want to continue whatever you want to do all right everybody's good with what we do yeah all right item c is the budget calendar uh to sum it up i'll have something for you at the august board meeting it'll be uh in available to public august 4th it's got to be available 30 days because then in september we will approve the final budget so i'll have an initial budget on august 4th september we'll have the final uh graduation ceremony eighth grade oh i gotta we have to approve that oh sorry um can i please have a motion to adopt the 2022-2023 budget calendar motion second drone all in favor or no it's roll call sorry yes um graduation ceremony um this past spring you know that didn't go so well with the weather and i would say that i at this time i would probably recommend we just take it back inside um based on feedback uh after that one if we would i do have a thought if if we were to keep it at the uh theater this is what i would do but i would definitely want parents to have a say in this because of uh but here's here's what we could have done differently i think would have worked better but um they could do the the tailgates party the fun time tailgate they could do that here at the school have a stage set up inside have food and stuff inside in case there's bad weather um where kids could you know take pictures on the stage get in their diploma do all that stuff here and then at eight o'clock do get like a police escort over to the theater and play the program out there they could just kind of make a fun celebration night of it if they if we want to do something different that would have helped this year if we'd have done something like that because if it's raining during the program not a big deal you're in your car but it was the problem was the kids could it was it was it was raining hard and and it wasn't great to get out of your cars and have fun and the kids that were there so they had a good time but a lot of people didn't go because it was raining so hard so i i i felt really bad about the whole thing when you people i think people are wondering why we didn't just move it inside but when you plan for a different it wasn't like we had a formal presentation outside and just move it inside that would have been easy but we had a whole different thing planned and to move that inside was just not even uh feasible if we move it inside we're talking limiting tickets all that stuff again we just live streaming here so overflow crowd can come in here you know we can do that if you want i can pull an 8th grade parent committee together and kind of present some options to them and how do you what do you want i don't know what you all think is a board you probably heard a lot of feedback or maybe you didn't you i mean the feedback i hear yes people wanted it put inside but they forgot that once it's inside you don't not everybody in your family can come no and that becomes a problem for a lot of families yeah so i think i mean i think i'd be all for get i mean let's get let the eighth grade incoming eighth grade parents figure it out yeah okay i mean what they want to do it's not can you rent like a screen instead of having everyone have a celebration here and then drive all the way to mchenry just rent a screen and show it here because it's a lot of resources just to watch the screen there yeah the issue is that and once we bring it inside we have to we can't yeah we have to limit the number that could do it well if you're talking about having like the oh granted outside here and if you had like a screen outside oh yeah yeah yeah we might be able to do something like that so you're not having like hundreds of cars yeah mchenry yeah that seems kind of like a logistical nightmare yeah well i'll pull an eighth grade parent committee together and we'll just figure it out we'll just figure it out and uh i thought it was a theory it's a great idea it's a it's a lot it's a lot of fun if it works out that was not well i guess we should have just had an alternate rain date yeah that probably would have helped and it's it's hard to do i agree with you it's hard to do that because they can't give up their theater well because the year before it was freezing outside but it was sunny yeah it was nice it was nice yeah it was tough and then the first year was raining yes yeah but we at least we had a graduation yes yeah 90 of schools didn't even have one right yeah i think it's just i don't know if i want to get into dealing with the tickets again but at the what i mean yep okay so then uh insurance update just uh you see it in there and our our workings comp has gone up again and uh there's really not a whole lot i can do about it right now we just had a couple bad claims or the last couple years and uh um our if it's complicated reading that document but the the experience mod factor is what's hurting it when you see that number um it's going to take a couple more years for that if we have a couple good years it's going to take a couple good years for that mod factor to correct itself but those claims just kind of add up so item the last item i have is map summary and i don't know if you had time to take a look at that the so it's all on there i to summarize it um i would to just do a general summary i'm going to tell you that this isn't where we want it to be i would tell you that uh it's it's not as good as it's been in the past um we know that we had i don't i don't want to make excuses uh we know that we had a lot of social emotional issues this year working through with kids um but uh this you know the scores were were okay but not great um the math scores for seventh and eighth i want to point out math scores show that uh we did not meet observed growth or the our observed growth was less than the 50th percentile on the chart one table one but when you add in the seventh and eighth graders who took algebra and geometry we jumped over so when you throw those in this chart one does not include the uh seventh average took alternate geometry so um so all in all you know we we definitely see some areas that we are uh you know concerned about or just not not as happy with the growth we saw we were i would say it's a district we were right around the 50th percentile if you took the whole average which would be average growth some grade levels were higher some grade levels a little lower i will say middle school seem to have a struggle with the with the map a little bit um but any questions if you've had time to read that report we're going to michelle and i dr hetchwood and i are going to do an update for you in july it's going to be like a full curriculum instruction update and then we will get iar scores later in august and we'll be doing another update to kind of show you some things uh there as well so um we definitely have to do i mean i could talk about this for a long time because this is something that's been great uh really taking a lot of energy this summer is after seeing these scores and um but we're having to really shift on how we approach this testing i think we've we've taken we tried to not put so much pressure on the kids and i think it tends then to appear that well it's not that important but it is kind of important because it's not uh it's it's not this is a measure for us to see what's working what's not so uh just know that this these results are not where we want them to be and it's really cut you know it's a part of a lot of conversations around our table so for the uh discussion next month of curriculum can you send or both of you send out like an outline of what you plan to speak on a couple weeks ahead so if there's something we see we'd like address we can get it to you ahead to yeah get some so you have information for us at the time yup it doesn't need to be anything in depth just maybe line-up yeah yep two weeks ahead yeah we were just talking about this afternoon i think we have a good idea so and then if you want us to talk about anything if we're missing anything let us know yeah at least that way you can maybe be yeah have a definite answer instead of you know we'll give it to you yep perfect so an assessment calendar yes yes thank you and we have we have an assessment counter calendar online but yeah but uh we are going to adjust it um and we will talk about that next month because we are going to adjust it because we well we've had a trouble is uh and this i'm getting into something that we're not ready to talk about but we've had struggles this day you got ir tests in the spring and you got map tests in the spring and which one's more important right now i'm not sure but the iar is what we're judged on by the state and the community map test is really kind of an internal thing we've kind of put more emphasis on the map test so we took the we would take the ir early in march before spring break right when the window opened because we didn't want to if we waited until the end of the window then they would take the ir test and turn around take the map test the next week we thought that was too much testing in a short period of time but now we're thinking we need to shift that because the ir results uh are going to be are pretty important and we don't think the kids are taking it we just don't think it's we think we need to give more time more we need to take it at the end of the window so we have more time to get them ready for it but that impacts the map so it's it's a tough one i would look at the schedule it seemed pretty intense for the middle school was pretty crazy yeah because it didn't seem to make much sense no and i i told uh i i told um i told dr hutchers already that that's one thing that uh we are going to change next year because um it the schedule's hard because they the state so i'm not i'm not knocking how they did the schedule this year because the state has some regulations on how we do it but um we're gonna we're gonna try to i want the kids when they're taking the math iar test i want to take it in the math class uh right now they just go to they spread out across the building and they all test at the same time when they're when they're sitting in a classroom that they may not even ever be in that classroom taking a test and it's not it's just to me when the math teacher's in that room and you're taking the math test and it's it's a different environment and then you have your posters up or things that they are so we're not doing yeah that's something we're not doing right now the problem with that is when you do that once you start that test that day all the kids have to take the test that day sometimes so so you have to adjust the whole you have to blow the whole schedule up for for that day and you basically have four periods and that's we're testing when your kids go to their math class they take a test but when they go to other classes they're just going to have longer periods but that's how we got to do it so we're going to we're going to shift that uh kind of talk to the i've been i talked to josh a little bit i think about our plans but um so we have to i guess what you're getting at is i agree we have to address the testing environment well don't your act your bilingual kids take access in february yeah so yeah so that's another test right there yeah it's hard as a parent to tell my student that they're all important yeah when they're also doing their homework in their and they're just regular testing like for their classes because something kind of has to give yeah yep it's it's just so tough because yeah map is everything in high school grades don't matter yeah yeah so that's it for my report all right can we include two the percentage of students that are in the algebra geometry yeah you want the in that next month's report yeah okay all right anybody have any questions on the may 22 employment report can we please have a motion to prove the may 22 employment report motion second joan yes this is the same list of hazardous bus conditions we've had for years yep no changes all right any questions we just have to annually approve it so can i please have a motion to approve the certification of hazardous bus conditions motion second joe and lauren all in favor any opposed eyes have it anybody have any questions on the treasury appointment and bond all right can i please have uh the motion to approve the appointment of treasurer diane spakowski for the 2022-2023 school year and uh corresponding school treasures bob motion second joe nash yes yes yes uh resignations we accepted resignation from haley vaughan elementary uh special ed teacher accepted a resignation from lindsay de bello pera effective may 30 31 and we accepted a resignation from colleen davidson para effective may 31st um anybody have any questions on the foia requests no any on the monthly reports for the board nope our next regularly scheduled board meeting will take place monday july 11 2022 with closed session beginning at 6 00 pm and open session beginning immediately after a closed session comes can i please have a motion to adjourn motion second joan vivian all in favor aye

our principals when they saw this couple weeks ago when we met were ecstatic about the fact that they can make job offers now saying you're above 15 for special ed teaching assistant position i won't read the rest of the examples samples there for you but again that is january of 2021 in the first column and then the middle column is after our nine percent increase last summer and then the proposed column on the right so so what's the start for for eight because this example the the special ed ta has five years experience so what's the can we see the thank you oh so 1482 okay all right thanks and then the last slide is uh breakdown of um the cost so it's a little bit confusing because the numbers don't add up but the the first column the six percent grade matrix that would have been the cost if we just moved the whole grade makes it matrix six percent so that was already built into the budget that you guys approved last fall uh we were prepared to do that already changing the floor to fourteen dollars cost a total cost all the funds involved of about seven hundred thousand dollars but some of that was already captured in the first column and the six percent increase that's why the three numbers won't always the math doesn't work out some of the 14 dollar minimum was already already captured by the six percent increase then the great adjustments that we made to make ourselves competitive that each employee group cost about 400 000 total so the additional appropriation required is a little over five hundred thousand five hundred nine thousand for the education fund and 305 000 for the operations fund total of 814 000.

the other employee or the other funds involved don't require additional appropriations from the board just the tax supported funds i'm happy to answer any additional questions that you have the um the survey data that we use do you think they're relevant given the you know the inflation of recent months i don't know how long ago that data was taken and then processed et cetera et cetera do you feel like it will keep us competitive all of the data was from this current school year and the the local the two regions at the top that are the smaller sample size groups we actually asked in those surveys do you intend to give each employee group a raise this coming summer essentially all of them were yes and we tried to we tried to build that in as we made decisions about you know if we were moving someone from a grade six to a grade eight we tried to build in the fact that we know that all other districts were also intending to give a raise this summer or at least some sometime this year and i should have said too that that existing cash balance and expected revenue increases for this fall will cover the cost that we're proposing here this is not an additional tax burden just using existing cash balances and revenue increases i've got a quick question either for you mr phillips or maybe more for dr pleek so instructional assistant specifically would you have a ballpark percentage of ias that began the year in those positions that finished the year in those positions i do not okay i don't think we feel i don't think we even filled all of them this for this school year so um so we know where our goal would be to get them all filled and then we'll retain them then started with openings and ended with openings right over the course of the school year and just anecdotally from from my experience we have we have two different groups and the same thing for support staff we have the group that has been here for a long time and they're reliable and they they love what they do and they stay regardless of what they get paid and then we have the positions that just churn um and maybe don't make it a couple of months before we're posting it again and trying to fill that but we couldn't couldn't give you those numbers at this time but do they tend to happen oh sorry sorry um do they tend to happen in the lower grades the turnover [Laughter] from a numbers standpoint the number of employees we have in those in those first five grades is just so much larger each grade that goes down there's essentially fewer employees on each of those lines because those positions are managerial or require some technical with the exception of maybe the technology department some of those many of the grades at the top maybe only have one person or five people in the district gotcha okay yes this isn't really a question about the additional appropriation tonight but in terms of uh recruiting looking at that matrix um when we make a new hire are we allowed or do we sometimes consider the same experience at another school corporation so if i've been a ta for five years in seymour do i get some credit as a ta here or do i enter with zero the outside of our school corporation experience counts two for one so that's how we do and then any experience that you move around in our corporation it's a one for one year but it's a two for one for outside experience that's related to your job thank you dr how many open positions do we have currently just all grades across the board do you know ballpark you have to be precise i would say most of them would probably be operations a lot of ours the operations and the tas are our largest group that we current that we always have open throughout the year um i would say our last school year it seemed like custodial staff and um some of our tas in the lower grade i got that now so i misunderstood the question earlier so correct that but um i think you know what mr phillips stated earlier is when we were looking at all of this people that do stay with us especially that they hit that 10-year mark they're here so with us so it's the lower grades the ias the part-time positions um those are the ones that turn over most frequently and and is our hiring outpacing attrition are we still netting a loss like on a month-to-month basis at this time i would say it's a loss okay we're hoping with all of this we'll be more competitive and with the market and people who have a passion with being around students and making a difference all right are there other questions i think have we have we finished our hearing we just need to make sure oh sorry opportunity for public comment with the yes to do that are there questions that anyone sitting with us has regarding this request for additional funding i am not hearing any so thank you i will now go out of our hearing public hearing and come back here we are in our regular school board meeting i mean this is an opportunity for us to recognize some outstanding students so i'll i'll take it all right thank you thanks dr shed unfortunately this is just the way it is sometimes in the summer we have a hard time getting the students and and or coaches and others in here because vacation time has started and people are out and about but we we still wanted to take the opportunity to recognize these students for some fantastic accomplishments over the last month or so so from a recognition standpoint we did have just a week ago saturday a few state champions i'll say it that way two events state champions at columbus north high school tucker smith repeated his state championship in the shot put tucker one of the best throwers in the country and then we had our team from north set the not only win the state championship but set the state record in the 4x800 so congratulations to all of our students at columbus north as a team they finished third which is i believe the highest finish ever for columbus north high school in the team track performance additionally we have some state champions in the academic competitions that continue through the end of the school year so our team from columbus north high school we had the academic state champions there and you might notice actually a couple of those kids i think rishi and matthew were both here for top ten and then matthew was also the governor's selection as the mr math i guess for the stem team uh this year and mr jensen recognized matthew at a recent meeting it took about 12 15 minutes i think to read through the list of accomplishments for that kid so that's our state champions in math columbus north high school and then central middle school had a state state championship in math too so i i'll just take a moment thinking about north and central winning the state math championships and if you remember we also celebrated mandy was here with southside we celebrated two elementary math champions the small school and large school divisions there are five divisions based upon size in the state so just putting that all together two state champions at the elementary level the state champion at the middle school level and the state champion at the high school in math although not directly sanctioned as a sport or contest by bcsc but our kids the project uh the robotics team uh made up of bcsc students won the state robotics championship um and so when you take a look at just those specific accomplishments throw in that next year you've approved for all of our students to have stem k through six every week for a certain number of minutes with a certified teacher i don't know how much that is happening in other school corporations around the state with the percentage of kids that we have at the set c4 taking a career technical education class i believe dr hack had indicated about 92 percent of our kids are taking at least one course um in in c4 or cte course that probably starts to put us in the stem capital of indiana kind of range when you look at the performance and and the participation of our kids so just wanted to hit those statistics um real quick based upon what you see again with just that math thing that we've been able to do really well at over the last couple of months and celebrate those recognitions thank you you're welcome we always knew we have a lot to be proud of so just one more thing all right now's our opportunity for a presentation on our learning management system good evening thank you for making some times for our group this evening um i want to recognize and appreciate um the group here behind me and and the um tens of other people on their team that are not here with us the learning management system as brittany will explain to you is a big deal in bcsc it's the catalyst in the vehicle that that helps teachers carry and deliver curriculum to to students so to me it may look like another contract and agreement and but it's it's a tremendously big deal um both for our teaching staff and for our students to make sure it's appropriate and vetted and all those things so this group that they'll explain and spend a lot of hours bringing this recommendation to you today so i'll turn it over to bereni to explain the process and what they brought for you tonight thank you dr bozeman and thank you board for having us tonight this has been about a year in the making so we're really excited to talk to you about this tonight so you will hear me say lms multiple times and that's just the abbreviation for learning management system because that's kind of a mouthful to say after a while but we're going to talk to you about the work that we've done over the past year the research that we've gathered the feedback from our stakeholders and our recommendation for you moving forward so before we get too far into things we will introduce our fabulous team that's here tonight so my name is brittany coomer and i'm the coordinator of instructional technology here in bcsc and a member of our learning management system leadership team i'm also the system administrator for our current learning management system which is its learning hi i'm kelly kolp i'm an english teacher at columbus north high school i'm also the cea representative on the team nick williams the director of technology was formerly in brennie's role so this has also been kind of a journey of love for me all right so our game plan for today is to show you our update on this process and really give you a why for why we're here today give you some of the results and rubric scores from our committee work and feedback from our various stakeholder groups so we can ultimately give you a recommendation for our new learning management system so the reason why we're here today we've had a really successful journey with its learning we adopted this learning a few years ago from 2014 to 2015 that was our pilot year it was our year to really prep before we were going to go one-to-one with chromebooks and windows laptops as well as a mix of ipads in the district and its learning was an integral piece of that our stakeholders had communicated with us years ago that if we were going to go one to one we need to have one place for all of our online learning to take place in one access point for our teachers and our students to get to their resources so we had its learning district-wide 2015-2016 and had a really high user rate from the get-go i was a first-year teacher actually during that and i remember going to all of the it's learning trainings and kelly trained me nick trained me on that and i just remember thinking this is so exciting i'm glad i'm getting in at this moment because we're going one-to-one in this new technology tool so it's learning's been a really big part of my journey personally and it's been really integral to us the last few years because of the pandemic as well as you can imagine we've had a really high user rate logging in we maintained that we had over 90 percent during all of our e-learning days as well and that's really a lot of credit to nick and the work that his team did before as well as the hard work of our teachers kelly is one of our power users and has been and it's learning over the years she's an exemplar for innovative creative use of lessons during this and we have a few examples here of that of the creative use of its learning over the years anything from live streamed pe classes during the pandemic with members of the pe teachers family to using accessibility tools for translation to checking in with students multi-sensory activities so just some creative ways to provide options to our students and support universal design for learning no matter if it's a digital landscape or you know just trying to provide some of those offline options as well so with that being said it's learning told us around this time i think it was june 4th i have it forever stamped in my mind it's learning shared with us last year that they are going to leave the united states market they are a european-based company based in norway and they decided that they wanted to focus their efforts there so after you know having the initial shock kind of wear off because i'm like we've had the highest best user rate we've had in years and then oh my gosh they're leaving we need to get the ground going get working on our next plan here and that's really what we've been working on over the past year is what are we going to do next and what's that going to look like so it's learning his leaving the united states in the year 2025 but they're honoring our contract through the time that we already had signed with them so technically our time with it starting ends not this year it's actually the next school year it ends in june of 2023 so this whole past school year has really been us doing our research and gathering feedback so we can make the best most informed decision so in june nick and myself met with cabinet told them about this that this is the work we're going to be starting and we looked at a lot of the data that we could access readily so the state puts together a technology report that shows what popular learning management systems are used across the state so we kind of sifted through that and looked to see what are similar school districts to us using what devices are they using with those learning management systems and what digital textbooks are they using as well so we know there would be some compatibility we also looked at what higher education institutions are using for their learning management system as well where are a lot of our students going after they leave bcsc and is this something that we can try to connect to so it's less of a learning curve for them so after looking at that initial data we started working with some of our it's learning partners we've had over the years there's a lot of it's learning customers across the country that we've developed really strong relationships with and tried to get an idea of their process and then we also worked with cea to start forming our committee all right so our committee members we tried to represent as many buildings and grade levels and subject areas as possible so we have primary grade teachers on there middle school high school all of the different content areas including career and technical education are represented on here as well and we have a blend of teachers administrators and instructional coaches too so we even have some special groups on here as well so even those who support special education at the district level are on here too so tried to make a representative group here and worked with cea on forming that committee all right so after we formed our committee our work really started to begin at the end of the first semester of this school year so in november was when we started sharing our timeline for our process with our committee letting them know that this isn't the year you're going to have to train people quite yet this is the year that we're gathering the information to make our recommendation and the next year is truly our training year we worked at our first meeting on getting some feedback from these committee members on what are some things that you really liked about its learning over the past six or seven years what are some things that were difficult with its learning what are some areas that we can improve upon and what are some things that you would like to see in a new lms it would support learning environment of the future and all those exciting opportunities we want our students to have and then we also had shared a draft of an evaluation rubric that our team our leadership team here had formed together to get some initial feedback on that and our second meeting is when our committee really dug in and we did a tuning protocol with them to tweak that rubric after they had some time to kind of sit and think on it to make sure that it really was the rubric that we wanted to use moving forward for these vendor presentations that we knew were going to take place in the second semester so i'm going to show you the rubric here in a second but the the two vendors that really rose to the top from looking at what we want in lms what we know that we loved about its learning some things that we know we wanted to have different in a new learning management system and really looking at the state technology report data in higher education are that schoology and canvas were the two learning management systems that we knew we wanted to invite in to have presentations they were very popular and a lot of our teachers had heard about both of these vendors right so i'm going to transition and let kelly share a little information about our committee work as well as our rubric all right so we had a rubric and we took this from several different sources both from our own experience in book adoption we had quite a few rubrics that we have used for that process already and then we looked at other places who had already used a rubric for looking at lms's we found butlers to be very helpful in this process and we added our own thoughts because you know we have our own unique world here we wanted to make sure that udl was included in our process and that's very important to us and so we included it here we had a few big asks that we thought there's no way we're going to find those asks but if you don't ask you can't you can't get those things and so we put them on there and um then we were surprised when we could find those things um so that's a quick snapshot of what it looks like so this is what our process looked like on those two half days that we had with our committees on both of those schoology and canvas we had half day presentations with those folks and they came in showed our team what the products looked like how we could get in and they just gave us some time to play around and just get in there which is really good for those of us who are going to use the product it's really nice to be able to get in and just see what it's really like they also gave us good demonstration and then followed up with a week a week later of a virtual presentation and that gave folks a time to think about questions go back and try it again on their own after they were outside of it and come back in and then the committee members would work on their rubrics at the end of february we had the team members turn their rubrics in we tabulated those results and after we had worked on that as a team we met with some other outside groups to make sure that we were getting stakeholder feedback from all kinds of voices we wanted to make sure that we had voices from every group getting feedback so we talked with students e-l-l legato special ed igrad parents guardians families and our tech titans the people who are going to be training everyone else on how to use this lms which is really important because we want to make sure that they know the product as well and those feedback sessions were really helpful they gave us good information and really no red flags came up as we were going through that process thank you all right so it's back to me again thank you kelly um so these were the the results from our committee work at that time so we had 21 members complete rubrics and canvas was the front runner on 20 of those rubrics we averaged the scores in all those different categories on that previous slide where there was a screenshot of the rubric you can click that and we'll open up the full rubric if i tried to fit it on the whole screen it was going to be like size 7 font so i went with a little snippet instead so canvas was the front runner there for several different reasons a lot of the feature sets really differentiated or really made canvas stand out from schoology it wasn't that our team didn't love schoology just canvas had some more exciting features that like kelly had said we thought these there's no way these exist in a learning management system this is too much to ask for and they really had them so i won't go through every single one of these but some of the highlights here that it has a really strong mobile app experience so that's something that our a lot of our kindergarten students use ipads in the classroom and then a lot of our high school students log on after school or even some of our middle school students and want to access their courses and it has a really strong app presence which is not something necessarily that it's learning had in earlier earlier years we also have an elementary friendly interface so some of our primary grade students are still learning how to read and write and it gets confusing when you're clicking on different screens and the canvas interface has a different look to it for elementary students that we can easily apply across the platform where it has bigger icons everything has a picture and it's much more touch screen responsive so if you're using the mobile app you have those features there's also built-in accessibility tools for the students as well one of those being immersive reader and we're going to highlight on that a little bit more here in a second there's also a built-in accessibility checker for staff as well and this is one that we thought there's no way this is out there basically what this does is that as our staff are adding in their own content they're typing up their lesson plans and putting them on this platform it is running an accessibility check the entire time and telling you oh you need to make sure you change the hyperlink so that someone's using a screen reader and as reading with their ears they know what that says and it's easier for them to understand so it really just builds in some awesome features for our teachers and supports them is they're building and designing their own content which we know they do even more post e-learning all right so it is also compatible with our existing hardware and software one of those key pieces being that it's compatible with our power teacher pro grade book and i'm actually taking over one of your slides right now kelly i apologize i got a little ahead of myself and was really excited about this one i know kelly is too it's compatible with our student information system and our teacher grade book which means that when teachers go through and they enter scores on canvas it migrates over into power teacher pro grade book so the grades are live and they're active there whereas in the past if teachers wanted to grade something there was no connection between its learning and power teacher pro grade books so it was very time consuming a lot of teachers kept a paper log of grades because they typed on it's learning they still have to go over and type it over again on power teacher pro there's also a feature here for students as well where students can kind of check their grades and do a what-if checker so if they're missing assignments they can practice plugging in scores and see okay if i got if i turn that assignment in the teacher hasn't entered the score yet maybe this is what my score will be once i get that assessment score back all right so transition so one of the really helpful things that canvas also offers is this to-do list for students and what a great helpful tool that is i know my own children often are like well i don't really know if i have homework tonight but canvas offers that right there in front of you right on the left hand side i believe and so helpful but it goes right also along with the idea that teachers have this new feature where they will be able to send reminders to students um and this is a great feature that i didn't know it existed where you can sort students and let's say sort for students who didn't turn in an assignment and you can just sort by those students click a box and say i would like to send an email to these students and say hello students you didn't turn this assignment and you have until this date to turn it in please please turn it in i would love for you to turn it in if you need help feel free to contact me and then send and it goes just directly to those students no one else knows that they've gotten that message so it's private no one knows what a great feature we've also talked about the mobile app the greg book connection i don't know if you all know this but when we grade things in its learning it takes about seven clicks to grade an assignment now when we grade in canvas it will take one click so the time that it will save teachers is enormous so that's one thing that i know i'm really excited to be able to introduce to teachers as we transition into training and because that's another thing that we've talked a lot about is training and getting buy-in with teachers and so we're excited that that's a positive we mentioned this briefly before but our success with its learning has been partially because we've had so many stakeholders in it from igrad special ed directors ell and it was important to get their feedback um because we couldn't have that big of a committee to make the selection so these are who we kind of talked to we did meet one-on-one with over 200 students to get their feedback on both of the lms selections along with these other groups so some of the feedback here one was from an ell teacher and just the built-in translation tools that our families and students will be able to get we have well over 120 languages spoken in the district and meeting those students is always kind of a priority with us in technology and then when we met with students and parents one of the things that we heard over and over again was that it it syncs with higher ed so canvas they know that a lot of our teachers come in and coming in are used to it and then we know a lot of our students will go to almost every state college in indiana except for one has something or it has canvas except again for that one so that was another key kind of comment that we heard from our stakeholders all right so after we gathered all of our feedback we presented to a few groups before we made our way to you all today we presented to cabinet and then the ccic in april and then in may and they gave us the go ahead to present to you all and now we are here so one last little bit we want to show you before nick goes over a few other details are just our training plan because it's one thing to recommend something but we're always thinking ahead as well and trying to think how do we how do we give our teachers training on this this new learning management system if it is approved because this is something that's totally different new to them so we are going to plan to use those wonderful pd days um it was our prudent moving forward for next school year to to train our teachers and our staff so as kelly had mentioned there's a team of teachers that i work really closely with throughout the district throughout the whole school year and they come from every single building in all different roles i gave them a fancy name because the committee used to be called instructional tech team and that was kind of a long title and everyone kept shortening it so they got renamed to tech titans which sounds really awesome and fun and they all love that new name change but they really are tech titans they are the people who are in the building who are training all of their colleagues and are that familiar face where if someone has a question about the learning management system they're the go-to and there's a lot of power in that so we're going to focus on training our trainers on the first semester so i have built in meetings with them once every nine weeks going to utilize that as well as the pd days to give them some training with trainers that we're going to bring in from canvas the canvas also has a pretty big user group in the state we've already connected with some of them to see what what training models have you found to be successful with your districts as well and they had recommended training the trainer as well and then really our plan to roll this out to the whole district is kind of using our trainers that we're training the first semester to accomplish that so february would really be our go live day for all of our staff our students would still continue to use its learning throughout all of next school year that's where all of our teachers are still posting all of their lessons because it's learning will not bid a due until the end of the 22-23 school year so this is really a time where teachers have overlap so they can move some of their content over if they need to and they have a little bit of a buffer here to train before they lose access to its learning and before they go all the way in on canvas so we're using those second semester pd days to train them and those aren't the only training options they will have i do a lot of different training throughout the school year because i believe that there's a lot of power and giving options in professional development as well you know trying to implement universal design for learning in the training that we give our teachers so they'll be one-on-one training options faculty meetings laptop lunches or lunch and learns they have different names depending on the building that you go to as well as district workshops after school we do those live in person a little bit of everything so people have options on how they can do that all right so nick is going to go over some of the pricing all right so we like brittany said earlier we have it's learning through next school year and we actually paid for three years up front on that contract so they are honoring that through the end of next school year and while we can train our teachers in this we typically don't sign five-year agreements with technology just because it changes so fast but with a kind of a year where we're training and not really having students in i felt pretty confident that a five-year agreement would commit or show commitment to our staff that this isn't going away anytime soon and we got better pricing so there's a couple pieces in with that so it is and you'll see the contract it's over three hundred and one thousand dollars for in total for five years includes implementation and training this first year and fits within our technology budget uh for this first year so we have a few other resources linked on here for you if you want to access them from our rubric to the futures protocol we did the first meeting where we're talking about we want to see in our learning management system to the training activity we did to tweak our rubric to make it perfect and if you have questions our emails are on there otherwise we can answer questions here as well all right thank you very much so questions that colleagues have yes mr stenner thanks uh on one of the slides towards the end there was a reference both to canvas and something called instructure is in structure like the name of the company and canvas is the product and what do we know about the company uh is it in europe and is it going to be focusing on on a different business segment soon no we've we've talked to a lot of districts uh that have worked with instructure the the ownership company of canvas of course they have other products that they will try to sell us including some assessment tools and whatnot but um we've at least our research has shown that it is a a reliable company in the united states with good footing sorry and actually canvas is the only lms that has not had any decrease in growth in the last decade right are there other questions yes yeah i just have two two questions um there was a very thorough training plan for um that the tech titans would execute but but you did reference parents and your stakeholders will there be some sort of a resource a training resource available for parents also to help their kiddos yeah we have had technology parent nights in the past family tech nights we we have found that it actually we get better turnout if we do those more at the school level rather than district one so we will certainly provide those opportunities as well as resources on our website as well hey that what a feature i'm just thinking about my son and he's going to be like if i get a 67 do i pass the class like how how good does that have to be so i think that could work both ways that could be a plus or minus i was sitting here swirling on that i'm not sure if that's good enough um the other one when we went with um it's learning did we look at canvas or or schoology and did we decide not to go with him and maybe what has changed yes actually on that committee there's only one person not none of us we're on that selection committee but canvas was the finalist with its learning last time so um yes they scored well last time as well i don't really have a question but i do have a comment as i've been using i'm a canvas user i've used it for several years where i work and i've always i was so happy when went from blackboard to canvas i just couldn't stand it as a teacher it was it's very user friendly there's a lot of extra apps and things you can get like badges and all that sort of thing that you can have with your students so i think i think you'll be happy with it um just from a teaching perspective too i feel some of our teachers had actually written that on the committee i want to start using this now we're really excited so they they feel the same way good yes thinking about the implementation process at what points will we kind of assess where we are do we need if we had enough training are the will we be testing the feeling that the users have a year out two years out what are the evaluation steps after after we sign and implement knowing that the first year is our training year i don't think i'm we're probably going you can generate data reports that show logins and usage and can even look at what type of tools or resources are people creating the most in this platform so we can generate those to give us a feel for okay like even building by building roll by roll we can look at okay this is what teachers using this building maybe you know if there's not a whole lot of assignments that are being created maybe they need more training on how to use that tool so that's something that i think we'll certainly use to target our training the first year and then check back in on that as we implemented with students that you're following are the tech titans that we have in the buildings are really good for getting some of that qualitative information they're the eyes and ears and buildings when i can't be in all 18 of them at once and tell me like we really need some training on this um our udl facilitators are fantastic resources as well they do a lot of training too and i meet with them regularly so that's been helpful but for the data piece the reporting tool within the platform is really going to steer that e-learning days really puts this under the like magnifying glass as well and how well our teachers are prepared so the first e-learning day we had with its learning we had over 200 calls that first day on just questions and getting to that point to last year where we maybe had 10 calls um on the first e-learning day of the year i think that also is a good measuring stick of how well our parents students and faculty have have gotten used to the platform wow nice i'm sorry one more okay this will be my last one you mentioned a couple times how the learning management system can be helpful with complying with the ada in terms of making sure that all our content is accessible what what exactly are the requirements and how hard is it to for us to meet those requirements for accessibility george would probably dr van horn probably the best person to answer the nitty gritty details on that but we we have an expectation in our district that you are implementing universal design for learning which means that you are implementing some of those basic web accessibility guidelines that you can find on university websites we have a web accessibility statement that we actually have on our corporation website that talks about that that you know if you're you're if you put in the web accessibility checker that's actually built in on canvas it's going to meet some of those minimum metrics so if a student is using a screen reader and it's generating that report saying that it's not going to be able to read all this content or those pieces missing then that's kind of our threshold there for the the minimum pieces the tricky part is if you're uploading some pdfs and things like that just because those are their own kind of beast and there's different tools you have to bring into that but this at least helps implement or at least further our udl implementation by giving that resource within the platform versus having to go to all these different resources and try to find other web accessibility checkers on your own so hopefully that kind of answered your question kelly did you i think this will also be a tool to educate a lot of our teachers because they may not know that what they're doing isn't accessible to some of our students and so this will be a really easy way for us to educate our own teachers so they do know oh maybe i do need to change what i'm doing interesting other questions all right thank you very very thorough we appreciate it i just like to take a moment to commend nick caprini and kelly for their outstanding work with this um you can see the depth that they delved into to make sure and get the right information out spend time with stakeholders put together the right data and provide this recommendation to you it's an extremely important piece as we do so much with the virtual and and tying things back to parents with questions from nikki and students so thank you for all the work you've done with this definitely thank you thank you very much all right next on our agenda are opportunities for board commendations so i'll turn to my colleagues mr grimes um just a few things here as always some of these have already received a fair amount of press and some have gone on behind the scenes first of all congratulations to scott sievers for being a long-time business teacher at columbus north for being named norris 21 22 teacher of the year by the bulldog alumni association students are able to nominate teachers on a variety of criteria one of which as a teacher myself i always get a chuckle at one of the criteria is the speedy and thorough grading and assessments of student work i always kind of get a kick out of that but congratulations to mr sivers accommodations to rock creek's amy elsberry and csa lincoln's jill garris for being the williams and sally hanley excellence in teaching award outstanding elementary teachers in vcsc this year congratulations again mrs elsberry ms garris a quick note from business teacher at columbus north brian campbell just a little over a month ago columbus north deca business club had two students compete in the national finals in atlanta uh neil deshpande was a national finalist in the business financial services and anushka patil competed in financial consulting and finished as one of the nation's top 20 students in hurrivan so congratulations to those two kids just kind of a blanket overall congratulations to all the spring sports teams at both north and east for all their team and individual accomplishments it just seemed to me to be an outstanding spring so again congratulations to them throughout both their regular seasons and well on into the postseason for for both many individuals and and teams uh congratulations to the north band and their directors mr burton and mr munoz for being a recipient of the indiana state school music association all music award for this past school year um congratulations to recent graduates olivia sprong of columbus north who will be attending the university of indianapolis and winter shaver of columbus east who will be attending purdue olivia and winter were both named next generation hoosier educators scholarship recipients through the indiana commission for higher education both olivia and winner very nice scholarships of 7 500 a year up to 30 000 for committing to teach in indiana for at least five years after graduating so congratulations to them and lastly congratulations to the many bcsc students that earned the governor's work ethic certificate this year and i tried to sift through the pictures um that the republic ran of all the recipients last week and it seemed to be somewhere in the ballpark of 400 kids so congratulations to all those kids and uh all their hard earned work in getting the governor's work ethic certificate this year thank you thank you very much are there others this is so weird for me i know i should be used to this but i'm not i'll get there all right there are no other accommodations as i move on for public comments we haven't had anyone sign up for items that we have on our agenda so i will now go to our what and that is our school board member reports so are there reports from colleagues who've had meetings you have mr grimes uh just a couple items of note from uh the school foundation director nicole cunningham and the bcsf annual campaign kicks off this week uh with the theme giving hearts for growing minds mrs cunningham would like to encourage people to visit the foundation's fake well i almost said what i think it is i almost called it fake book but facebook page sorry facebook page uh on the on the foundation's facebook page they're having a t-shirt sale a new video uh there's new video content showing a lot of the grant recipients in action they're giving away a columbus book for every 50 donation the school foundation will also have a presence at the columbus farmers market on july 2nd where they'll be selling laura joe's cookies for kids so that's the report from the foundation all right great thank you all right that should be also on the list of things for june dr pills i should i'll add that are there other reports i'll just do you have one sure go first all right i'll just say on may 20th the business advisory group met and we went through a fascinating exercise to inform our work as we renovate and think about our buildings so i enjoyed that that was the last meeting for the school year um along the lines of building renovations dr bozeman led a meeting of the districting and facilities committee which has a lot of community members on it as well as employees here at the corporation sort of outline the schedule and the projects that are going to be accomplished this summer it's a very good meeting great all right now's opportunity for cabinet reports i think you get one mr phillips thank you dr shed this is the semi-annual extracurricular account report the only thing of note to point out is that we're getting closer to being back to pre-pandemic levels of both revenues and expenditures but you can see they they equal each other out for this year so no no dramatic changes but steady growth as people are starting to go back to more field trips and those kinds of activities so that's good to see awesome any questions of this report i have one yes johnson center what did they buy for four cents they didn't they did spend their four cents i just now realized that they spent the four cents that they had at the beginning year they were just quick i'll have to file to check with them to clean that thing up probably made a donation or something yes something i know it wasn't a gallon good question pat all right so the next item on our agenda is our first reading of a policy revision number four slide for the spin your pack you did have that change and the policy already exists it is policy and the title that policy um it's in regards to medication so it is use of medication policy 5330 this follows falls under the chapter for students and so as we move into the school year we have to work through a variety of things and as things change and laws change and so forth we have to be prepared for those those changes and so there is indiana code uh pull the uh reference here indiana code 24-4-21 and it talks about low thc hemp extract and the that is something's being prescribed and so if prescribed by a doctor in certain amounts and is brought into our school system what do our nurses do about that so we needed to have some policies some direction and just made sure if that low thc hemp extract item or product is brought into the school as a prescription from a medical practitioner then we have a process for administering that it's not something the student could just hold on to and do we really don't have any medications that's done self-administered necessarily so ends up in the nurse's office nurses the one responsible for any administration of that and all the different specifics and details in regards to that the quantity um and how the prescription work is in the language so medication policy only changes nothing to the existing policy addition of wording around indiana code 24-4-21 regarding a low thc hemp extract specifically the definition and conditions for administration this was legal counsel that assisted us with that that language pulling it from indiana code all right so we all had an opportunity to read that in our packet are there particular questions you have about the modification the change revision to this policy just a general question how do they how do we know which medications to call out so i you know i noticed some of them like epinephrine or naloxone or who develops the list see so those were already in the policy correct yeah so you have this list of different things that are called out in our policy and now we're adding one so that that list is developed from indiana code of things that are allowed to be prescribed and used in schools at some point in time each of these medications have been discussed in the legislature correct and determine legal in certain amounts or quantities and so then if there is a prescription for that it falls underneath those conditions and in the one that we cited tonight for example there are four different conditions in order for the school to then provide that or administer it at school thank you you're welcome all right other questions okay thank you for sharing that with us and again that is a first reading so we'll bring it back to you for further review and any questions between now and july make sure and ask those all right and now we get to go through items for approval yeah so a variety of items for approval tonight the typical a through e as well as then five additional ones so we'll start with the minutes of the regular school board meeting from may 9th that was the last time we met about five weeks ago supplemental contracts were in your packets uh with field trips and professionally we left the letter on there but no request no specific request this time school fundraiser so you had a list of those as well as claims and payroll claims for today's date june 13th totaling about two and a half million dollars and then a pre-run that covered the month of may since again we have met since may 9th may 1st through may 31st we had about 2 million dollars covered in that one and then we had a bunch of payroll uh lists of payroll the payroll may 6 may 20th had an additional one on may 23rd that was for teachers who choose a payoff option so they get their their pay from the summer instead of every two weeks they collect it at one time and then the payroll of uh june 3rd and you see there that are basically normal payrolls except for this last one on june 3rd also included stipends for our spring um extracurricular items and those all of those totaled about 11 million so we had basically all of may the beginning of june about 11 million dollars in payroll claims there for you continuing those requests we do have a dual language grant application that's become a typical one for you to approve each year as we continue to as our legato spanish immersion academy continues to evolve additionally in new one the employability skills innovation and implementation grant that is a mouthful those are esther dollars made available through the state the department of education is regulating those dollars i believe it was seven million dollars they made available to schools we're kind of banking on based on the timing it had to be done within about a three week period at the end of school year in may that we went ahead and put in a grant application uh the governor's work ethic certificate was mentioned earlier for example we're looking to try to find ways to increase the number of kids participating in that employability skills thing so and also to just assist us as we continue to move our counseling council initiative forward and other things just help help our students so there's a grant application that we are submitting to the department of education that information was in your packet we have an additional appropriation resolution so the public hearing that was held tonight a lot of information provided by mr phillips you you saw that that appropriation that additional appropriation is related to us increasing support staff pay and then we also have a support staff appointment to the bcsc health trust i believe we have that picture there so we have t.j skinner is that enrollment she's the enrollment student services coordinator out of our ifc building i think our last three support staff appointments have come out of the isc uh building and then we also have uh that last one letter j is the learning management system contract that mr williams provided details about for you tonight so those are our list of approval items for this evening all right so i will entertain a motion for approval of items 3a through jay as they were presented to us so moved thank you is there a second second thank you mr bryant are there particular questions about any of these items that we have the opportunity to read about hear about do you have a question i don't have a question dr shed just a quick comment okay in regards to letter g the employability skills grant for whatever reason i just kind of enjoyed reading through that information there were a lot of very good stats about the you know the community and yeah so thanks to the corporation for all their work in uh completing that grant yeah thank you mr graham it was informative doctor shiv yes i was going to ask on letter f the the dual language grant application it was under twenty thousand dollars i mean yeah um what portion of our dual language programs does that fund and is it like in addition to our budgeted amounts and so it's worth it to go after it i'm sorry might grab a microphone here cheers so the answer to that question is yes it's it's additional money uh it's money that was made available from the state when we first started the dual language program to get the program started and each year you can apply for fewer and fewer dollars so as we continue to expand into other grade levels we use that money for the expansion so we're adding uh two new classrooms at the fourth grade level this year and so that was money that we were applied for to to be able to do that so again with each successive year we can apply for fewer and fewer dollars and eventually we'll top out and won't be able to apply for that at all thank you the state has had the dual language program or dollars available for implementing a program in place now for a while and typically it will start out with trying to give a pretty significant amount to corporations to see if that can be the feeder for getting the program off the ground and then of course like any other grant will start to to go away and we have to figure out a way to sustain that so primarily the dollars now are being used for professional development resource classroom supplies those other things as the program continues to go but it'll be a very small percentage of paying for that program because every year we're adding two new classrooms teachers their benefits and so forth to keep that to keep that moving thank you you're welcome all right good questions and comments any others all right all of those who approve items three a through j as they've been presented to us if you signify by saying i those opposed all right those pass unanimously dr roberts thank you i request approval of the human resource recommendations as presented this evening thank you so do i have a motion for approval of these human resources recommendations so moved thank you miss dayhof dwyer is there a second second thank you dr bills there any questions for dr pleat all right so all those in favor of the human resource recommendations as they've been presented to us if you'd signify by saying i i those opposed there you are dr thank you very much thank you all right lastly we offer the opportunity for colleagues to offer comments review i'll start with mr grimes just congrats again to all the uh state champions both academic and athletic that dr roberts uh mentioned earlier and recognized earlier in the meeting and i you know i think i would guess um you know that there are probably not very many corporations around the state that could uh you know they could announce such a thing so that's um you know very uh that's good stuff and then also um thanks again to the uh nick and the technology team and um all their work on on selecting the new um lms yes thank you thank you dr bills oh i forgot to add okay so this is a psa state street taco tour june 25th starting at five on in east columbus it's on facebook so if any you know if you like tacos who doesn't like tacos right then yeah there you go june 25th thank you miss day off just like to add continued prayers for officer steve norman which jenae works for the corporation who's recovering up in indianapolis from an accident on may 13th and know that they're in our thoughts and prayers and that we will continue to be here for thank you mr stenner i'd echo what mr grimes said about the recognition from earlier in the meeting and i was thinking um as we recognize the students normally we've got coaches in the room with us and in particular i'd like to commend all the all the adults that have worked with those students and and helped us succeed as a corporation if you could pass that along dr robert yes sure can thank you mr sir including their parents thank goodness mr bryant i just want to wish all the fathers happy father's day thank you thank you that's it yeah the only thing i say so so uh dr blake is a person who is constantly monitoring staffing i just wanted to i shared this with our organization last week as we're trying to bring on new people so the u.s unemployment rates 3.6 indiana is 2.2 we're 1.7 guys it's tough we are a community ripe with opportunities that's great for people living in this community but but we're competing like we're constantly competing and so it's really good to see that we're moving the needle on trying to be competitive we'll get the best people and then they're going to raise the best students and kids that we have here in this community so anyway thanks for evaluating that i know that was a long process but it's it's necessary work and i think it'll make a difference great thank you i'll just say because this is our first school board meeting after graduation yay and congratulations to all of those seniors and to those sixth graders moving to middle school and our middle schoolers moving on to high school so congratulations to all of them and their parents and i know summer time is when so many of our staff are working busily doing things in schools and classrooms when you can't do it when the students and teachers are there so i respect and appreciate very much all the work that's going on to have us ready for a school year that's going to arrive probably before we can imagine so thank you for everything for all the work that went into graduation for our students and all our graduates teachers and staff that got us there and thanks so much for the work that you're currently doing now hurriedly while the buildings are open and empty and you can get a lot of stuff done so we do appreciate that dr roberts i would just add to that dr shed i think the picture that's up is a great one kind of summarizes or or puts a cap on of the school year in terms of everything we're trying to do is graduate our kids make sure they're prepared for whatever it is that life brings them next and i think josh did a great job of capturing the three different graduations that we had which all went tremendously in three different venues we had a high school auditorium at east we had columbus north gymnasium and columbus football field and they all went very very well awesome awesome all right please mark your calendars we get to meet again we will be here in the terrace room at the administration building on july 18th at 6 30.

call the housing board of appeals meeting to order at 1 30. brandi can you do the roll call please yes kristen schweijhoffer present jerry schulte tim durham here todd shachelski here andrew rasmussen here and lisa steltzer here for staff we have chris mcfarland here john riser here deborah williams here and myself brandi lewis and glenn dempsey excellent thank you all right before we have an agenda can i get a motion to approve the agenda a motion to approve the agenda all right thanks jerry is there a second i second thanks angie there's an approval in a second all in favor of approving the agenda please signify by saying aye aye opposed all right we have an agenda up now we are at public commentary there is three minutes per speaker i know we have some folks here in the room and it looks like we've got some folks online anyone who wishes to speak that is not part of the appeal today you may approach the podium okay not seeing a big rush brandi do we have anyone online i do not see anybody in the waiting room okay all right we are cruising through then the next item on our agenda is the approval of minutes we have the housing board of appeals meeting minutes from february 8th 2022 they are included in our packet i'd entertain a motion to approve the minutes i moved to go ahead all right i'll give todd the first angie will you second i'll second all right all in favor of approving the february minute please signify by saying aye aye opposed all right minutes are approved um new business i don't see any this is listed under unfinished business but i believe this is the first time we've heard this appeal so would this be new business yes okay all right so if we could just amend the agenda to note that this is under new business all right we have the appeal 22-1057 which is a variance application for 227 orchard hills ann arbor michigan 48104 there are some attachments in our packet including a staff report and then we will also hear from the appellant who's providing the staff report for the city i am all right chris thank you chris did you want to give the staff report okay thanks all the way from the path on here right i think yeah the background in the summary okay so the background the single family dwelling located at 227 orchard hills drive was built in 1955 and appears to be original construction the owner of the property requests one variance to the requirements of section 8 504 paren 4 parent b number 5 for handrails for exit stairways staff is unable to support granting of this variance the housing code requires a handrail at all flights of stairs with four or more risers this is similar to the current building code requirements found in the 2015 michigan residential code and previous versions each stair within the flight of stairs in question are half the rise four inch risers and choices deep 18 inch treads as allowable the low slope of the stairs does not constitute omission of the required handrail the 2015 michigan residential code requires a handrail on ramps exceeding a slope of one unit vertical and 12 units horizontal that's an 8.33 percent slope the slope of this flight of stairs is 25 percent three times as steep as a ramp which requires a handrail well accessibility is not required in single-family homes it would be unreasonable to expect a person with a wheelchair or walker to climb stairs as suggested in the owner's appeal the code at the time of construction which was the official building code of ann arbor from the 1929 council proceedings is ambiguous and can be interpreted to require no handrail or a handrail on one side it's the city's interpretation that the intent was to require a handrail on one side this is ultimately not relevant since the housing code is applicable to all dwellings without regard to whether they were constructed before or after the effective date reference section 8 501.

um the quarter pounders are more it's in phoenix um it's finishing up i'll get it i go to taa next so they had to get the new railings in we had to install a step so when you open the doors an additional electric set comes out to help students that need the extra so this one kicks out so it cuts the distance in half so that's that's the last part of the finishing we had to they had to take the rails where you would look in the straps to secure the the wheelchairs or an arizona standard to go and replace those rails but that strips the floor they hook into it our arizona standards and then those that come out and ours that can go in so we can properly secure the suitcases yes okay [Music] thank you okay back from executive session do we have it publicly okay so we're waiting for the fountains yeah special checkpoints um okay dream uh it was like that already [Music] or something on live stream yeah okay so let's go ahead we'll just do that through live stream if anybody has culminated with the screening of our students recorded piece sets to disney film footage so great time our kids you can see the crowd there that got to go so thank you again mr ferguson for organizing disneyland trip our cults will be riding in style five of our six buses have arrived so we went to take pictures and um our drivers are there on the right that drove the buses back so we're super excited for that summer retreats and prep for upcoming school year so we had a very good governing board study session and develop board goals which we will put on our july agenda for approval along with our school goals and our measurable objectives that we've been working on our smart goals continued work with generation schools network developing the continental way and strategic plan for board approval in july we did meet at the u of a experimental area for our retreat and we met there with generation schools network and with ourselves and so we're not sure if we're going to have the board members go out there or not when we plan our board retreat and we are looking forward to our governing board annual retreat as well here is the draft of the governing board goals that were undeveloped by the governing board and executive session so when when we met to continue our work we based our goals off of the three goals that the governing board said superintendent's event so i completed year of serving as president of asiana's board and asa executive board member my last meeting will be tomorrow at the arizona school administrators conference we'll have the board meeting after the conference i am also serving as a mentor for aspiring superintendents through asa and wasa and i'm attending the asa conference summer conference which is today and tomorrow so i will head been asking for student planners for through avid and organizations so we plan to use the money for that and data binder material technology equipment which will replace laptops excuse me um for kindergartners in action staffing update our current vacancies we um still are in search of a part-time elementary counselor we do have our account our counselor that was working last year as an intern she is willing to continue as an intern but we need to have a certified counselor record in order for her to be able to continue working here a psychologist we did get a lead today on a psychologist who's willing to come in person uh we've had lots of inquiries about psychologists and counselors who would like to service virtually and we really do need in-person support grounds and maintenance and we also have vacancies for parapros and programmatic assistance so again thank you for allowing me to continue to serve as a proud superintendent of continental it's been another great year with the support of our governing board dedicated administrative team amazing staff families community support and most importantly our students who are doing the hard work of reaching their full potential and working towards becoming well-rounded productive citizens in the world so cults will continue to rise above that completes my report thank you very much thank you all right i made the consent agenda looking for emotion i moved to a perfect consensus second the discussion of the senate i have a couple of questions um item u um 16 payout i understand that these are attractional um do we reserve for potential liabilities on either vacation payouts or sick leave payouts is that reflected in the afr it's not reflected in the afr it is a budgeted expense okay knowing that we don't attending today's noontime financial update and well finance subcommittee meeting uh we have a few items on the agenda let's start with our monthly report update is where we are i know uh eddie was going to join us but i think i might as well start and then he can pick up i'm familiar with the report um i just i don't have it to share though he had had that if people have it um can they look at it or i can just talk about it um well sorry we can uh let's see i can leave you not leave you but uh see if i can bring it up okay i mean i can't share it but we all got emails on the agenda and but not being uh too computer savvy i can't uh chew gum and walk straight with a computer and but i do have okay go ahead john all right um so the report is uh through his expenditures encumbrances through the end of may and um the unencumbered balance uh at this point or if nothing changed is 98 we do have the graduation expenses you know for the middle schools and for the high school uh would likely come out of that they could be as high as uh seventy eight thousand dollars we're we're hoping they're less uh but so we don't expect uh any encumbered unencumbered balance at the end of the year and let me say that that's very different than the last two years uh the last two years uh pretty good size amounts were unspent at the end of the year but we attributed those uh to the fact that we didn't have school all year long in 1920 we closed in march and a lot of things didn't happen so i think it was 2.4 million went back to the city uh that year mostly from transportation and not having buses things like that and then uh last year meaning through uh there was a 2.8 million dollar return or unencumbered balances at june 30th and uh we attributed that to the same thing to the pandemic and the fact that we uh started the year uh hybrid and really um didn't get everything going until till mid-year but there were transportation budgets that weren't used because we didn't run the buses and same with health insurance people stayed away from the doctor but this year is different this year we had a tight very tight budget to begin with and we had a full year of face-to-face and all the programs and services so i think one one way to look at it is um yeah we did what we set out to do and there really isn't we don't expect there'll be any money uh left at the end of the year and you can see that in the report and uh eddie uh points out that we uh we're still keeping our eye on uh health insurance uh because as as you know we're self-insured meaning we we pay the claims for employees who've gone to the uh doctor or whatever they're doing um and we can't um there's a little bit of a lag there uh we don't really see first of all we don't see what you know much about the um what you know ails people we're just seeing the banking part of it where the claims are are being paid but they're they're kind of hard they've been hard to predict um in a pandemic year like this it just um it still has not been a normal year i think in the medical profession so we're we're keeping our eye on that um and that's why we uh not ready to say there would be money left um when when we shut down later this month um so that's uh that's the budget in what's going on uh there's attached to the report um is a letter from me to the city's uh finance director we attached that uh because it came we talked about it at our board meeting i think was kate brought it up so i if there are no questions on the budget um or the grants we had our usual grant pages there for you um i i'd like to find a minute to talk about that too john i have one quick question please yes um do you and you anticipate finishing the year either at a net zero or a positive do you do you don't do you not anticipate finishing in a negative i just want to be clear about that um i see eddie's joined us uh i it it you know it all come down to health insurance claims you know we're sorry guys having a little difficulty but um yeah just like john mentioned the health insurance claim um i can go through the the quick uh agenda not agenda i'm sorry my monthly report let me just share it real quickly so you guys can see it on your screen um yeah i went through the highlight i think were the highlights of it um already and we're talking about the unencumbered balance right well if anybody hasn't gotten look maybe you could bring the screen up so we could all be on the same page as far as the the monthly report and also are we going to finish it near a near zero balance without that extra 2.4 million dollars from um there was a possible dispute with the city from our on our budget different budgets no it's it's the same one the 2.4 million uh remember a year ago that was part of our operating plan that's what brought our budget up to a 139 million from 137 you see it right on the cover of eddie's report um it wasn't until february though that we um heard what i heard from the city finance director that that wasn't um automatic that we had to request that and only for certain reasons uh so i put together uh i think i shared that with the committee when it was going on we did put a request together and uh we found out that um just this month that request was approved and that the 2.4 million will would be added to our 139 million uh this week or next week or added to our to bring us up to 139.
