and we have a lot of things in progress so i'll run through this list quickly so we are hiring uh currently more safety advocates let's say more safety advocates uh we have a tbd on on what the total number is going to be but right now we're we're back filling positions from resignations uh we are conducting security audits i talked about this a little bit at the board meeting a couple weeks ago with officer march we're currently about halfway through the the 20 schools we've got about 10 done we're upgrading our camera systems the old system was digital uh watchdog it was kind of grainy it just wasn't very good to a much uh cleaner uh system called the vigilon and that will be in all 20 schools uh rogers park ellsworth and ais are currently in progress and if you've been over to those schools you've probably seen the guys up on the ladders fiddling around in the ceilings we're going to be completing the acquisition installation of a system called mutual link which i'm going to talk a little bit more about um this is really a sort of eye in the sky system um it allows us to have a sort of central command for everything from the cameras to um the way we uh talk to and coordinate with emergency services um if there is an emergency we're going to be doing uh at king street primary and enclosure in the media center so we'll be putting doors there so that they have a special space for lockdown should they need it um every summer we do replenishments to go bags so these are bags that principals have in their office just in case of a lockdown or a drill and has things like vest stop signs you know rosters maps you know just all the things you would need if you were you know in a hurry to get out of the building and wanted to make sure you had all your essential stuff uh we've been replenishing our radios district wide a lot of this got paid for with our state grant we're constantly updating our security plans especially as we put new um new cameras and alarms and i got to move my little screen here and also in in line with annexes these are different um basically addendum that uh the state comes out with to say that you have to have certain um certain things identified in your emergency plan so um mr torrez is telling me today there's the latest addendum was five and um you know now there's there's certain procedures that have to be in place for example for handicapped children there has to be a person identified that's going to you know either help with the wheelchair or whatever it is um so we update the plans to make sure we're in in sync with the city or the um the state guidelines we're going to be doing an overhaul of our school safety committee training program um just to make sure it's up to date and it has all the sort of newest features and training procedures we do constant maintenance of our key card systems and access logs just to make sure that you know if people have been are no longer working with the district that those key cards have in fact been disabled that we've collected them that people no longer have access to the district once they're they're no longer employees we're constantly doing maintenance of the alarm systems in all our buildings just to make sure that they work properly and again i i put this in here as a transition completing acquisition installation of the mutual link system so this is a screenshot of yes like kind of one of the features that mutual link's going to be able to do so it's going to have these sort of high-level maps of the school and each on here are there going to be dots of where the different cameras are so we'll know you know if there was an incident that happened in the parking lot this is ellsworth uh if there's an incident that happened in the parking lot we'll be able to say oh look there was a you know there was a camera facing that area we can pull up that camera and see what happened um it won't be in any classroom interiors there won't be anything in the gyms and there won't be anything um in the cafeterias just um to maintain student teacher privacy so this is really uh you know an as needed um system and then this is another one i talked about uh the building audits um like i said we're about halfway through these we've done about 10 buildings with officer marsh he's a woodbury pd officer and he's a privately trained school security consultant so just a little bit more about this so rich torres and officer marsh have been visiting the schools and they walk through and they do a pretty exhaustive audit of uh everything from you know looking at the physical building the entry and exits um exposure and accessibility you know is there sensitive equipment that you know somebody could you know rip out or damage um surrounding areas and grounds are there a lot of trees is there a hillside is there a place people could enter the the campus without without being noticed is there appropriate signage so people actually know where to go when they're not you know pulling on doors and um you know looking suspicious even if they're not supposed to be or even if they're they're not suspicious they could just be a parent um is the parking properly identified is there capacity for trespassing just general processes and procedures upon entering the building is the advocate checking id are they you know are they in the right place when the person walks in and again other technology systems for security and anything else that they catch in the process okay that's actually my last slide i'm gonna stop sharing and i'll take any questions um just to our committee and board members um i'll open it up to questions but if we could just keep the questions to the information that dr selig provided in the slides today i lost the pictures of everybody is there we were going into another situation sorry rich what was that i lost the pictures of everybody at the bottom of your computer you see a little camera the blue camera at the bottom yep click on that there you go hey welcome back theresa you had a question um how many cameras total do we are we going to have so that's it go ahead that's situational according to the size of the school uh basically what uh i'm doing to all the schools is doing a 360 on the on the outside of the school and also having cameras in the hallways of the schools again not looking at classrooms not looking at restrooms not looking at cafeterias not looking at gymnasiums they're there so that way in the event of a situation god forbid we have actually eyes to see what's called what's happening coming up and down the corridors of each quarter in the in the school and also a 360 or surrounding the whole school in itself who's coming in on the main doors uh the the secondary doors and um uh and all the other doors that are pretty much not used as a primary or secondary we'll have eyes on that so that way so it's all situational as in the size of the school is it possible to eventually get a count for each school and who will be monitoring those cameras are we the uh sro person or are they going to be i work at the library and we have cameras and but that's a small one building facility and you know are you going to um have the sro officers sitting there looking at the cameras especially if you only have one at the building so basically what i'm trying to work on and actually uh am doing um the advocate of the school does have access to all the cameras yes our rows have access to all the cameras so we're counting uh the high school we count the three middle schools now the element elementary schools there's only one advocate what i'm doing is i'm shifting also so that way the secretary can at least have eyes on cameras so in the event that the advocate does a tour around the building or has to answer to a call if you will in one of the classrooms or or a back door etc at least the secretary has it has eyes on the camera which that secretary would be closest to the principal in the event that that secretary sees something they'll advise the principal immediately so sir there would be no dedicated person looking at those cameras all the time the safety advocate will probably be on the move floating around the school correct pretty much yes so uh another thing that uh um and the school and the school resource offices warren danbury pd won't be sitting watching the cameras is that correct that's correct not all the time that's why i'm trying to also implement it where um the secretaries who basically the secretaries of the main office who basically are always at their desk at least has another set of eyes uh watching the cameras uh at the same time also is there a master key i i'm just thinking yuvaldi and all the issues coming out of there and walkie-talkies that work in the building i mean are we covered in those areas i mean who has master keys uh in our walkie-talkies are they do we have enough do they work so when it comes to master keys the only people that have master keys a hard key would be the principle would be the custodians and uh some of the advocates uh for the most part uh they have a key card access uh me and rich jobert uh at 2018 kind of noticed that uh each school needed more access from different points of the school in itself so we added more key cards and right now i'm still continuing to do that uh to give more access to teachers at the event that they go outside with the kids and they have to enter the building immediately if they if they can um also the advocate and the principal uh if they can go outside and they have other options to come in uh from the rear of the building from the side of the building all the way around so there's always a door that and i've been uh adding these on key card access so that's that's just a card that you scan and it gets you into the door and that key card is shows a constant log so we can see exactly who tapped in who tapped out what time they came in so that's actually a really great system um it sounds good but like in uvalde the police didn't have a master key uh and that is a big issue i think that it should shouldn't the police and fire department have a master key as well in case of emergencies so i have that covered banbury police department has a key fob that belongs to them their key fob actually works with our school system i put them all into our school uh a key scan system so in the event of an emergency or a situation danbury police department all they have to do is use their fob and they can actually get into the building when needed i'm sorry well they have access to the to a closed classroom door also with that foxer so when it comes to that then that's going no they don't have a classroom uh uh key but they do have access to get into the building when it comes to the fire department the fire department i upgrade it with the fire marshals all the knox boxes what that means is rich i just want to provide some clarification about keys um and i think and i think rich jobert is still on the line um from school to school there there are likely hundreds and hundreds of different keys to our locks in this district and so i mean you can just take one school rich fortunately you know we're gonna have key people in our district that do have access to classrooms specifically um and i think what i'm hearing mr torres talk about tonight is you know as as staff in this district we have a key card to get into the building um but in the event of emergency we definitely do not have enough keys um to get in every single classroom in this building um i i don't even know if it's feasible and it would i mean we're going to be talking about budget next wednesday um but we'll we'll be talking about re-locking this whole system if we wanted to get on a universal key system but rich jabber probably can give us a little bit more of a background on kind of the state of our keys in the system but again i would imagine from building to building we're talking about a lot of keys uh sure kevin um there there is a master key in the gold bag in each office so in the event of emergency uh emergency personnel police or fire department would get access to that gold bag and they would be able to get into every classroom uh years ago also we switched all the exterior locks to a secure out it's called the asa key system where um if i was to give somebody that key or somebody found the key and went to home depot or lowe's to make a copy of that key they would not make a copy of that key um there is myself and two of my maintenance guys that are the only authorized personnel with accurate lock so for instance if somebody goes to make a copy of that accurate lock uh they would call me to say this person is looking for a copy of the key is that okay so it's a very secure key system so rich the the go bag in the for both riches for that matter so let's just say with it to teresa's question if there is an incident at one of our schools and the principal or an assigned member has to go back am i hearing then that the emergency response team whether that's the police or the fire department they're directed to go to the go back to gain access to specific classrooms if need be correct okay sir as rare as i the walkie-talkie issue that i heard mentioned have you done radio frequency propagation studies especially in the larger schools such as dhs and and broadview and rogers park so this is a two-parter and uh it's between me and rich which can explain to you that day we put uh uh a single uh a signal booster in the dhs uh rich can you break that down oh yeah yes sir huh i i understand their signal booster it's it's a snap amplifier signal amplifier so your quarter walker talkies can work in the black box theater as well down into the gym exactly so those were installed at the high school um so in every school uh every radio does talk to each other and uh it has a circumference of about a mile and a half close to two miles away from the school in the event that they have to go away from the school in a situation right i realized you used to be used to use uhf frequencies the same as the police and fire department well those signal boosters also work with their radios uh as one time they did because i did test them right now danbury police moved into new radios and i'm working with danbury police to see if they can add one frequency to their radio like they had before so that way they can talk to the all schools that we have on our radios so that's something that's up and coming and and it's a work in progress if you will thank you anybody else have any questions just one on the man trap issue we have a few schools that have them but the majority don't is that in the process of being remedied yeah we have uh we're hoping to get a few more of them in um again this is a a construction issue um but yes we're we're hoping to to keep getting them in all of all the schools and rich and rich can you speak to the history on um that that construction because it's my understanding prior to 1819 there was a study done some buildings were actually eligible based on their existing construction my understanding is and then some were not so we took advantage of the ones i guess that were a little easier to implement so can you just for the board members who were not here at that time kind of update on everyone on kind of the history uh sure well there's some schools that are easier to to implement the men traps than others for instance king street intermediate in order for us to successfully do that i believe we would have to move the main office closer to the front of the building um to prevent people from walking down the hallway so we have looked at that and i would like to work on getting that taken care of thank you rich and and and to be clear we've we've funded these upgrades um with grants over the years um and the two the security upgrades we are talking about right now or are both uh being funded through grants um however the grants are specific um in in in its implementation and so mutual inc is part of one of those grants which torrez can tell us a little bit more about that but i don't believe the implementation of of the vestibules inside the schools is part of this grant and we would you know if if we want to be in a place where we can um include more um we're definitely going to need the money from the city to do so as it is we've budgeted we've budgeted as part of our request for this year 250 000 to match i believe it's a seven hundred and fifty thousand dollar grant um so with 250 we would get the other five hundred thousand dollars um and so that that's why the board saw this year two hundred and fifty thousand dollar budget item for security uh so we can get the match in 550 500 000 but that is specific purpose for mutual ink and some other camera upgrades thank you uh rachel did you have a question um our security were security plans part of the audit the emergency plans of every school yeah so they are part of the audit they um my uh rich and myself go through it so that way he could see that uh every school is against situations individual so rich is officer marsh by the way sorry not rich john you're right right officer um every school is different so we we go and i show him the plans of each school and i show them the difference of every school and why the plan changes and i explained to him uh what's the difference from one school to the other so that is part of the the assessments yes and who does this there was security training in the presentation who does that we're overhauling that right now it will be rich and we might be bringing in a few um external folks uh pending what we're able to do with some of the grant funds but we want to bring in some official training companies and professional development yes thank you everyone for that if there's no other questions oh terry go ahead is it possible we can get monthly reports on the status of all these points keep a surprise of updates sure thank you and also at westcon we used to have monthly um uh security reports uh you know you know like you know incidents on campus would be reported is there anything like that that is uh done for the danbury district um i i don't think it's typically come out of security i think kelly's office might have something uh like that i'd have to go check with her though right i i think it's in the form of incidents with students is what we report out um terry i think that's that our reporting is certainly when they we have incidents that rise to the level of the board certainly the board finds out um but those those those are oftentimes our security issues the ones that rise all the way to the level of an expulsion and the board is definitely going to hear about it from time to time there may be something that rises to the level i want to notify the board of the big items but i would imagine security in our school district is probably very different from security challenges at the college um i was just looking at summaries you know be it monthly semi-annually or you know yearly how many instances of uh you know knives founded schools or scuffles in the hallway you know type of thing would be very helpful instead of getting it piecemeal okay so we when carawanza makes our presentations um we we do have our suspensions in school and out-of-school suspensions um so i could just make sure that's highlighted next next year at that point when we do it and we can give some updates you know a little bit more regularly as well thank you um i guess we can move on to the last item g building madam chair before we move on man uh i'm just also curious on plans to put possibly put audible alarms on all the doors so once if you open it if the alarm goes off not just something that contacts with an alarm company but an immediate audible that people know that that that door has been violated i think we could talk about that um if it's not in anything new i think we can get do that in our executive session okay um okay last one g building um rich do you just want to give a quick update sure um the city has repaired the compressors uh so the air conditioners are are all functioning properly uh the thermostats uh don't have the error codes anymore um uh so i think everything's pretty good in g building and the air conditioners have been working and it's nice and cool yeah and i'm actually uh going to call in the control company to send set up some trending so we can monitor better uh ongoing temperature humidity uh carbon dioxide levels through our online building controls great that's good to hear thank you so much anything else any other questions from any of the committee or board members tonight okay then i'm going to um i'll entertain a motion um to move into executive session uh for the purpose of discussing security and strategies do i hear a second second okay all those in favor aye okay we are an executive we're moving into executive session so we have to log out of here guys and log into the next yeah just just in case there's a second um calendar invitation that has the new zoom link in it so find that other one and maybe i should hang out for a second if anybody doesn't have it i can okay michelle's tuning in okay there we are all right if we have nothing else tonight i will thank you everybody for coming out tonight and thank you for being so patient on this a little bit longer meeting than was expected tonight do i hear a motion to adjourn so moved and wait a second second

yikes i do have white hair now so uh and a parent as well so i'm just so talk about a speaker before me uh talked about connections i mean i got very emotional when i heard that word because of just my connection here to this you know the the school district and then being a resident here as well too in the city of anaheim and speaking of service um because of the values that was instilled to me uh when i was a student the idea of public servant servant leadership and uh being a part of the program here uh back back when mr mark souda was a teacher of the summer leadership academy um that was uh that's a while back so anyways i'm here on behalf of an organization that uh that was started by um my friends as well too called youth leadership anaheim at the time and then we incorporated as our own 501c3 called youth leadership america and uh we've started organization back in around 2003 and it continued to evolve and um we used to do uh leadership sessions for students it's it's of course a free program and we're 100 volunteer-based organization there's no paid staff um and um yeah so we have the challenge of volunteers managing volunteers and you know how that is um but it's uh so we've i guess yeah we've been existing for this long and so we've evolved our program to not being a 13-week program to just being one big event and um we had a meeting with uh uh mr matsuda before oh gosh before the pandemic that we were gonna put together a big leadership event uh a summit and expo and of course the pandemic happened and so that that that didn't that didn't happen uh but now that uh that's over we're um starting the event and uh we have a website everything's live we booked the convention center the city is uh is a a big support of our of this initiative and we want this to be a year-round event similar to the college fair that that exists every year so it's meant for anaheim residents as well as the surrounding community and of course this school district that a lot of our students are involved in our program uh can benefit so um the um i i realized i don't have a flyer we did everything virtual so uh um so the website i guess everybody here can write that down it's yla expo.org so yla expo.org it's youth leadership the event is called youth leadership summit and expo youth leadership summit and expo and it's a completely free event it's a the the summit part will be workshops available for parents and students so we have workshops such as mental health workshops for parents uh workshops and public speaking uh diversity well i mean there's there's a whole list you can see the website it you can register there as well too so we have workshops throughout the day and then starting noontime we have an expo and that's for all nonprofit organizations government agencies that serve youth can have a booth there for free um to exhibit and display the great services that are available so students and parents can that will be attending this event can benefit so a simple example one of our students came up with the idea think of it as kind of club rush week where students are learning about all the activities that are available on campus well here they learn about all the activities that are available in the community for them from scholarships to internships to the great nonprofits that exist here within our city within our school district uh that they can participate in after school in the summer um and um yeah so um i think that's okay i'm not sure yeah so okay one more minute and uh so we um so we want to make this i guess i'm here on behalf of the organization to invite everyone um and to get the ptsa involved as well too to get students here involved yla is a it was an organization founded by students for students and so it's still run by students today and yeah so we we have a budgeted ten thousand dollars for for scholarships as well for students uh to be participating in this and and maybe more um uh because we have funding we just we're still working out on some of the the expenses that we can save on that we want to put all of it towards students so um yeah so we're really excited it's our inaugural event we're expecting over 20 000 students um that includes parents as well too so we're really excited and it's again it's a a an event to celebrate youth to bring youth together uh to connect with our community and with all the great organizations and and programs that are out there that serves youth so yes john what was the date did your date is um august the 20th it's on a saturday and we have the entire um so the arena that's at the convention center and then that new building we have that new building there i forgot the the the name of it the whatever yeah so we have that new one upstairs yeah yeah we have the whole yeah we have the whole uh thing and so let me clarify also i didn't get the full website it is yeah y-i-l-a expo dot org expo okay yeah yla expo.org uh the press release is on there you can register get information um uh yeah all of our yeah all the information is on there so we're um super super excited to do this and um and and i mean i can't imagine a better time too especially coming back from the you know from the pandemic um for you to to gather and um and it's going to be a week before uh when school officially starts to at the school district so we'll have been started already yeah yeah yeah so we want us i mean and and this is um obviously it's it's fast approaching so we're looking for students uh to join us uh parents as well too to join our planning committee it's a big effort and so um the good news is we have a lot of funding so we have a lot of generous donors and um and yeah we want this to be the event that connects um that brings youth together um high school students this is tailored towards high school students um and and our great community so they know about all the the great programs and and services are available to uh thank you john i know i'm not supposed to talk with you but i know about yla and i'm very happy to see it back yes yeah and strong again we've had a lot of our students go through and do phenomenal work because of yla i'm really glad you're still with it too yes yes thank you john appreciate it well another successful pass this information right in union high school district one of our very own right we're so proud of you you yeah oh yeah yeah no you're looking around we're joined by you so good to see you thank you thank you all right thank you john all right well we're going to move on to our next uh item which is item number yep she's waving the blue oh you have one come on all right well i'll go ahead and call you uh oh here we'll take it go ahead marissa good evening i'm board members and cabinet my name is maritza bermudez um i love coming and saying hi to you guys every oh more closer sorry we're in my math today um happy to be here again with you guys i missed the last board meeting um but um i just really quick wanted to touch a little bit on the community schools i know i was here earlier this afternoon while this community school steering committee presented to you and um some of us got a chance to speak so i said i'll come to the board meeting and just give a little bit of my thoughts on why i am on the steering committee and why i really truly believe in the community schools model here for anaheim union high school district and know that i am in other spaces we are where we are actually leading a lot of the work so i'm very proud to be part of the team that we have constructed and i'm very glad that that one day that i came to the board meeting and i heard about the steering committee that i was able to get that information and to get on it because um i truly believe that if i hadn't been here that day to um hear that information i might have lost out on that opportunity so really quickly um i wanted to emphasize that for me being part of this steering committee is because i really want our schools to be racially just i want them to be relationship centered and i know some of the questions that you were asking earlier this afternoon i was just thinking relationship centered how are we going to get our students to take advantage of the cte classes those aim programs and everything and that's engaging us the parents the families informing us making us shared decision makers having that shared power with us and getting that information across to all our families so that way our kids can succeed i know we already have services in place but it's really important that we do center the student right but with the student comes the family and comes around the support that not only the student might need but also the family so it's not just about giving the services to the student but giving it to the family if needed so um that's the reason i'm here i'm here because i truly believe in this model and i truly believe the outcome that this can bring and i'm very proud to be part of this team and i'm very excited to get more parents on board and educate them and see how this can be a transformative thing with the community school so i want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to be here with the team this afternoon and for what they presented we took a lot of information back and i really like the fact that we all collaborate and we everybody has a voice everybody has their say in it and it's and it's valued so um with that and i want to thank you for everything of this year um it was a great year my daughter is going to transition to anaheim high school so i'm very excited uh congratulations mr alvarez for your promotion um hoping to see more exciting but better things at sycamore junior high and excited for our new assistant principal but i didn't catch his name thank you he left but um to work with them and with mr calleros at anaheim high school so i will see you at the next sport meeting thank you thank you thank you marita all right so we are now moving to our uh item number 10 which is adoption uh of the facilities master plan am i handing this over to consultants okay nancy's not here so let's go ahead and take a wait we want to open it to uh friends from lpa and patty and patty well patty is going to give a quick intro and then good evening sorry i was outside in the hallway um lindsay and and rick musto and and also jim uh kissel from lpa uh they're the firms that have been helping us with the uh update of our master plan as you recall in 2014 uh we the board adopted the uh the master plan that we're working off uh currently and uh for seven uh months now we've been working on the update you have been receiving in the community as well um updates on on our progress so uh we're here today uh finally with um going beyond the draft we're hoping that it's well received and and we're recommending or hoping that the board would uh consider the adoption of um of of this new uh master plan so with us lindsey and rick i'm gonna just uh hand it over to them and if there's any questions i'll be here promise and you know help out thank you thank you patty superintendent matsuda and members of the board of trustees thank you we're absolutely delighted to be here again we've spoken here several times over the last seven or eight months it's been quite a journey actually um so we're going to give you pretty much uh just a a very high level overview of the master plan a lot of the information you'll see today you've seen in the past so we wanted to make the presentation part uh fairly brief so we could make sure we have enough time for questions and answers and we'd love to take any questions you may have so we're going to just give you an overview talk about kind of the process a little bit the stakeholders stakeholders that were engaged through the whole process talk about the cost which you've seen before go through some of the funding overview and then talk about just kind of a sample project and then really leave a lot of time for questions and answers so you can see you've seen the schedule before and it's it's it's kind of daunting to look at and the most important part of this is the red stripe on the right hand side this whole process started november of 2021 and we're now finally at the culmination of presenting to you now the the final so um and i did want to recognize patty and her staff uh i don't think we could have gotten anywhere near where we are today without all the diligence and all the hard work that they did to really help with everything that went into this master plan i mean i would we do a lot of master plans across the state of california and texas and other locations and at least for me personally i can't think of another district that was more engaged in the process in terms of just um just the care that they gave providing us overview so i think the result of that i think is a very not only just a comprehensive master plan a very accurate one so i wanted to commend her for that and all the work that went into it let me open up my cheat sheet here so just to give you an overview of all those boxes and colors you saw on the schedule i mean we did engage a great deal of people so went through the whole process i think we had over 1600 participants and this is just a quick synopsis of all the different groups that we met with in terms of the steering committees cabinet meetings community forums we had four community forums the last one was the large form where we presented the final master plans and that was just really well received we did it over at the convention center and it was just a great op a great um process there and of course we met with the citizens oversight committee we had lcap meeting we met with focus groups online surveys site committees thank you i'm looking at my next page so we all together we had over 1600 participants and the little pie chart on the right just gives you a snapshot of all the online surveys that went out where we were able to capture lots of great input from parents students teachers and the school site administrators and all their folks so a whole lot went into what you see here it wasn't something that we just kind of went went and went out and just drafted really this is a result of all this great input that we received across all the different groups um i'll let we're going to tag team a bit here and i'll let lindsay kind of take the next step here so in terms of the stakeholder priorities and what came out of this process we wanted to highlight some of the themes we saw so obviously this could not be tinier text um for the specialized schools we have some very specific priorities so for gilbert high school hope school and oxford academy just because they have really unique programs we thought it important to list all of those specifically um they didn't necessarily align with broader themes per se um but then when we took a look at every single school site both on the west side and east side we analyzed the data in a couple different ways to try to understand where there were themes that we could bring to you from a data standpoint obviously we want to recognize the great work and the input of each school site individually which is why you see them listed and the numbers to the left of those are in terms of the scope categories you'll see tied to our funding analysis or our cost estimates just so you can see the um how everything starts to align so when we think of the common priorities for the west side schools the ones that rose to the top were library student union and student support services modernizing and reconfiguring existing classrooms and co-labs electives science labs and cte interior physical education improvements outdoor learning and quads and exterior hard courts and playfields and aquatic centers when we go to the next set of schools on the east side their common priorities were much the same actually as the west side but interior physical education improvements slightly different order elective science labs and cte performing arts improvements safety and security and exterior hard courts and playfields and aquatic centers so when we look across all of the stakeholder priorities in the variety of ways that we do them incorporating the online surveys from students teachers parents and admin as well as what the school site committees all said kind of the top four priorities that rose to the top were safety and security existing building systems and toilets interior physical education improvements and exterior play fields and hard courts and aquatic centers so this starts to weight things incorporating more student teacher and parent surveys um which is always interesting because i think parents taught two of their top ones were safety and security which is not unusual of course we all want to protect our kiddos as much as possible so those were some of the ones that rose to the top and we'll be talking about how those themes carry forward after rick presents a bit about cost all right and here's this again should be a review for you talking about the total cost of all the the documents so as you recall you know we have master plan diagrams for every single campus and those diagrams identify all the work and all the scopes of work so we uh would we organize cost in a few different ways so you can kind of see the different ways of trying to digest and understand what's a fairly surreal number probably when you look at it but the total cost of the total project cost for the entire plan that's represented in this update is just over two billion dollars so it's uh and i know i think i shocked you last time we met with that number so that's where we are and just to help you understand that as you'll see when you get into the details in the binder we've organized it by scope categories and these scope categories are represented on every school site but it gives you an idea to see one particular category what that total cost is across all schools so for example modernizing and reconfiguring existing classrooms and collabs if you wanted to get an idea what that cost across all the school sites that number is about 124 million um and then so on at the last presentation we went through a fairly detailed description of every one of these scope categories i'm happy to review those with you if you have some questions after but i won't go through those again but i just wanted you to understand that we have the detail here with all the different categories in the costs associated with each scope category then what we did is we've then summarized the cost by school site so the next page here just represents all the junior highs so you can see of that 2 billion about a half a billion is just in the school sites for between ball brooke hurstdale lexington orange south sycamore and walker and i want to make sure you understand that you know we we one of part of the detail that the district went forward is one of the complexities of doing an update is we had to come up with these costs while you're right in the middle of improving a lot of school sites so we did we put a lot of care to make sure there isn't a duplication of costs and that all the things from your current measure are incorporated if money has already been secured for a current project they're not represented in these numbers these are all future numbers so again we've got the next category just by school site by all the high schools so the high schools would of course represent a little more than twice the cost of the junior highs just because the size of the campus is and that shouldn't be much of a surprise that came to about 1.2 billion in total cost then the next the next piece is really cost summary by site or sorry this is a continuation of cost summary by site these are your your specialty size gilbert oxford hope handle stadium is separated out i think that was a question when we did the last update so we have a specific number for handle stadium and then the district campus itself and then the district central kitchen so you can see all those numbers separated again those come up to about 334 million again with the grand total of a little over 2 billion i went through that fairly quick and i'm happy to answer questions but i think the next piece is just to show you the other side of the equation so those are the cost side the other piece is really looking at the funding itself and where the dollars would come from in terms of funding projects and this is a summary that we presented at the last time and so you have dollars available for developer fees uh there's a deferred maintenance set aside there's the i think at one time we showed a balance on measure h but what we did is we um that's now shown as zero because all those dollars are identified already as active projects so those dollars will be exhausted by the time the next rollout happens with projects uh state facilities school programs there's about 96 million in state remaining state eligibility uh future general obligation bond so that's the the next steps actually is is doing another geo bond and the dollars that we had represented is about 319 million that could go towards future projects uh the federal funds esther funds which the district is eligible for to fund hvac projects and outdoor learning centers and some of the work that's actually starting there's about 46 million dollars there and e-rate has some dollars as well so when you look at the total potential funding it comes to about a half a billion so that's you know obviously uh significantly less than what the total is but that's not uncommon for any district process so that you're kind of an average there what we like to re recommend to school districts and you can see the pie chart on the side is that even though the total cost of the projects we identified were project cost which means total cost that you would spend on construction plus all the fees inspection fees and all the other soft costs that you would assign those are in the numbers but those are just um at 20 22 so because there's not that's not known how these projects will be funded and when they'll be constructed escalation plays a big part of the additional cost as well as other unknowns such as whether sites will need interim housing whether you might have to go to the city of anaheim or any other cities for off-site connections that might be cost for fees there so what we recommend and what's been kind of the rule of thumb for as long as we've been doing master plans is that you only allocate two-thirds of all your funding available to apply to the work that we haven't defined as terms of projects so you really have if you take that two-thirds rule you'll end up you have about 200 or 340 million dollars to apply towards your two billion worth of work so that means you're not going to get everything finished so we understand that and i think we went through a process of trying to prioritize or just obviously look at what you might want to do as your highest priorities in in terms of site in terms of projects and i think we're going to get into that a little bit in terms of sample projects and some of the the themes we've heard because we have asked school sites and i think we've come to the board as well to ask for your recommendations and thoughts on how you would prioritize projects moving forward and lindsay can give you kind of a summary of that but i think maybe before we go there do you have any questions so far with what we presented or do you want to wait till we're through and then go ahead yeah the district uh central kitchen which is shows on page 16 to 37 million where is that proposed to be located where we talked about it six seven years ago that's right yeah dale junior high and the account that we have money already set aside for that project is in on page 17 and what where is that sitting in what category uh some of the funds that um that we had allocated for that it should it's under rda if you if you go to page 17 oh you're on it now uh what kind of item is that it may not be in this list so that would reduce this this amount or increase this amount yes it's about 12 million yeah okay all right we can note that and correct this too for the final okay that'll help that'd be good and the magnolia high school the proposed uh stadium is in the magnolia high school site it's 153 million yeah okay okay cost yes and incorporated patty as we mentioned before the um the the um construction would entail upgrading to um environmental efficiency such as in in the restrooms what about solar i know we're working on solar but we don't have all the solar funded so does this new proposal cover all so everything is has solar throughout the district a little bit on the green code as you go through dsa and as you design new projects that's going to be a requirement patty would you would you mind coming to the uh podium only because i i want to make sure that folks who are listening also gets to hear you so so with this is the solar already incorporated in this 500 million dollar cost that would be part of the construction yeah when you design it it would also any new building in the future will we will be required to build in the uh the solar into the building on the rooftops okay so there's a considerable amount of solar that's already been planned and already been allocated in terms of cost on practically every school site and yeah over parking lots and those are all in the planning stages right now when future projects go to the division of state architect and go for approval currently they say you should allocate some of your roof for future solar it's um they need to be solar ready well the states move past that and starting at the end of beginning of next year you have to do more than solar ready you actually have to include solar so you're not going to be able to do a project without solar which is great i mean are all of our campuses already using reclaimed water for irrigation throughout the yeah does this proposal here put those put that into the campuses that we are within our uh i'm sorry within our boundary there's uh there's no reclaimed water where we could connect there isn't any right so but i imagine that if it becomes available we would actually be tapping into those lines but so to answer your question there's no tie-ins to reclaimed water at this point but as we construct or do whatever we're going to be doing proposal we would be able to tap into the reclaim if it's available with the city yes okay yeah all sites um irrigation was a big part of all the field upgrades so there's full cost for all irrigation whether you can use reclaimed solar or reclaimed irrigation we'll do that wherever it's possible go ahead and continue all right so wrapping up for us really this is just an example of potential sample projects so when we looked at all of those priorities and what campuses had prioritized and everything else there were a handful of themes that really rose to the top so safety and security was one of them and two of the top sort of sub sets of what safety and what falls under that category that rose to the top were improving parking and drop off and pick up areas this came up by the parents students and school sites no surprise because i think anybody that experiences a school site first thing in the morning or in the afternoon it's can be a headache there's been a lot of improvement with measure h dollars to some campuses but i think these are the other campuses that maybe haven't had some of those improvements and the other point was improving safety and security of the campuses that came up from parents and so just always at the forefront i think of people's minds the next theme is interior physical education improvements so this entailed gym fitness spaces and locker room renovations this came up a lot with teachers and the school sites and so a lot of this has to do with again campuses that haven't had that work done would like to have that so the next 01 and o2 categories meaning modernization we grouped these together because this entails both upgrading restrooms and as well as typical classrooms so this was brought up significantly by students and parents as well as teachers and school sites and then next on the list exterior playfields and hard courts and aquatic centers this was predominantly prioritized by teachers and school sites again they have that access every day for elective science labs and career technical education the school sites prioritized that significantly so really that came about in terms of making sure that the facilities available were keeping up sort of with the demands of a lot of those great programs you already have and then the next priority library student union and student support services so that came up by a lot of the school sites really thinking about what the future of a library could be and then last but certainly not least performing arts improvements and i think this came up probably on a handful of the campuses that do serve a lot of those district functions in terms of the theaters on those campuses um being improved so what that could look like as things get implemented what a sample project could be again measure h there's been a significant investment in safety and security on campuses so these are just some great examples of some of the measure h projects that have been implemented and dollars spent new entries with new fencing new parking lots new drop off new security cameras a lot of that has already been initiated but again on some campuses not all so continuing on with that great work done and then next district-wide facilities so again thinking about how you can utilize maybe dollars to affect as many students and families as possible so thinking about modernizing cook auditorium handle stadium the central kitchen so really kind of hitting on all facets of being able to serve the most students and then the last sample project kind of bucket i guess you could say is site modernization and this honestly could take a lot of different forms anything from a major modernization or transformation much like the work that um you all saw at dale junior high a very transformative piece of modernizing existing classrooms but also building a bit of new construction in the form of their admin and library and stem spaces and then new construction or a single building modernization so a great example of that is the new music building at oxford academy in terms of a single building on site making a big impact and then maybe falling under some minor monetization so some more targeted projects relative to outdoor learning to expand those opportunities for students to learn indoors and outdoors i'm really kind of expanding the fourth wall of that classroom if you will curb appeal fields and potential other improvements so you know we heard a lot about athletics and things like that and play fields so making sure that um that's something that would fall under that category did you want to cover next steps and so last slide yes that takes us to where we are today so um i know there's uh the next steps really are moving forward or this the the idea of of a general obligation bond i know there's a survey in process i'm not quite sure if it's completed yet maybe patty could update us on that so there would be a review they'd come back to you in july with a review of those results and then the next step would be development of a ballot measure language in july as well and if the board felt like they were going to pursue a bond it would have to be the declaration would have to happen by august 9th i guess is the cutoff date for a november bond and then if you know should the should that happen and should the bond pass then in terms of this master plan uh we've already talked to patty about the next steps are doing more of a detailed implementation so where projects can actually be defined by site so that would be a future step that would happen when we start allocating actual matching aligning the dollars with with actual projects all right thank you does the board have any questions just a comment thank you so much um i i'm just sitting here as a board member and how many years i've served and i realized like this is complicated for a lot of our you know parents sitting here um and trying to understand why we've even you know why we're looking at all of this and and these numbers seem extravagant so i just think it might be advantageous just really quickly board president to just explain um you know what this really is it's like a giant wish list um and hope list of what we you know what we would like to to happen and and really in general to explain that we can't use our dollars that we get from the state for facilities and just explaining that can we get maybe patty really quickly to just explain briefly why we're doing this well uh the reason we update not only because it's uh it's something that cd california department of ed recommends that we revisit our master plan our roadmap on how our facilities should shape up in order for for them to the facilities to be able to respond to the all the new initiatives that the district might have uh it's not only recommended for that but it's really um a roadmap for us so as dollars become available and really they're not dollars for facilities that come from the general fund uh there's certain certain pots of money from the general fund that could be used for for facility upgrades but it's more on the maintenance side so that's why that is important for us to look at the new the new um the new work we could do to move our facilities forward but then the pot of money that we would be getting from the general fund is just really for the maintenance aspect of it right so that that's where and then we have other pots of money how we were showing here where we could use for facilities but that's very tiny compared to that daunting amount of to almost 2 billion or 2 billion dollars so uh the goal is obviously looking for larger pots of money that could be in in the form of a general obligation bond uh we are almost winding down with uh measure age and um we might be considering a new bond measure that would help us just chip away at that two billion at the two billion dollars but also you know the district is always very involved looking for other pots of money whether it's grants or that school facility program so those are kind of the line items uh working with um we included as you see a line item just for e-rate those are uh dollars that brad and and eric seek to always they're applying for so we all we put all that together and and you know we continue to fund our facilities or modernize our facilities the maintenance funds that we get uh annually from the general fund that's just not enough to deal with our facilities we they they help but not enough so that in a nutshell this is why we do so just to bring it to the forefront you know what the needs really are for us to have modernized facilities and that really respond to the educational program and in some cases you can see that we have schools with dollar value where we have a a dollar value attached to them much higher those are schools that really need to be modernized and they they haven't been we've just been doing little things here and there so that's where the big dollars come into play i just want to say that our schools are anywhere from 60 years old 50 60 years old and anaheim high school is a hundred and years old yeah the oldest building um it's from the 30s um and um you know so yeah we have i think the the for the original building was i think it was the schoolhouse right in the uh 1800s late 1800s and of course that disappeared right and we built during the in the in the 30s the the main building and some other structures there but again those structures need to be modernized and as we modernize if you see the dollar amount you know as we go through the state the division of the state architect there's there's so many new requirements right code compliance it's just uh it's just constantly being there the codes are being constantly they're updated right and when you design or modernize you need to comply with those codes so that's what's really um that's why the the the values are so high just because of the amount of work seismic upgrades um structural upgrades those are all the things that we look at as we go through the division of state architect thank you thank you patty um yeah i mean part of it is just to kind of reiterate is that i know there are a lot of parents here who are part of the process who went through the process of coming in and giving you input on what you like to see in your campuses so this is the grand finale of basically showing how much it costs to get what your wishlists are i can speak for anaheim and sycamore high schools that you know everybody's nodding their head because they know the amount of work that we need in our schools so thank you patty for all the work and thank you to the parents or everybody's in the audience who've been part of the process so thank you all right and thank you rick and lindsey for all the work you've done and thank you for complimenting our patty because we adore her and you can see we we have definitely and done a lot of improvements with with her and she's the expert so thank you so much for giving her her dues all right thank you folks thank you very much [Applause] i our next presentation which is item number 11 is the district so moved we almost wouldn't have done that all right so i have a motion and a second all in favor any opposed motion passes unanimously all right we got to our presentation district english learner advisory committee who and we have it gives me a parents participated and we also have the opportunities for parent empowerment where we had the academies for parent leadership as you can see in the picture with the um and in here we were able these opportunities were excellent for us as parents we learned how to better support and for our students and how to have them succeed better have more success we also had the parent learning walks where us the parents would go into the classes and do the walk and there we could learn how to we could contribute more and how the system it is that they use to teach in the classes and see the classrooms and you could see the dlac needs assessment survey survey 2021 you could see it on your copy the letters are really small how and we have the most important section the recommendations for the board around the belief modules el shadowing el toolkit toolkits and increase teacher capacity to decrease the opportunity gap and increase the access and success of pl and el students how you have any question thank you for asking anybody have any thank questions yes thank you i have a question uh about the um newcomer task force i'd like to learn a little bit more about that how long has that been how long have you been meeting well thank you for that question so the newcomer task force began in 2015-16 with the increase of refugees as immigrants to our country from the middle east and so at that point i know president al-jabbar and many community members came together with cynthia vazquez pettit who was your director then and formed the newcomer task force with the help of diana fujimoto as well and so we've continued to meet each year to make sure that we continue to plan and implement more structures of supports and systems of supports for our newcomers like our newcomer learning plan okay next time you meet i'd like to i'd like to show up for that thank you and theresa i just wanted to ask you thank you for your presentation you did a fantastic job thank you and what was your highlight this year i know i'm sorry there's a lot of things you did yes yes what stood out for you well i'm an alive soy viva um yes one second so yes my first year as president here as in the board as president at district before i was in the board but at the elementaries but now i'm here at district but the most exciting thing for me was the compassion that increased in all of us since the pandemic more sensibility towards everything more that's that's what i'm focusing more motivates me more everyone wanting to make a change fantastic allah please i'm also excited to be here it's it's i can't wait to work and work for the students i'm very excited and very blessed okay i told that she's not done yet she's going to come back one more time all right so before you move on let me just ask you a question right um in terms of the newcomer welcome welcome center what does that entail and what are we looking at right so that has been a dream i don't know if mr colony slipped away into retirement already but that was a dream of mr colon and and all of us uh for the newcomer task force it's something that we talked about when i first arrived and so lots of talk about where it could be what space it could occupy and how much it we could serve our scholars and their families by having something like that so a lot of us about space we've been waiting where you know there's space is a valuable commodity here at the district so we've done a makeshift welcome center meaning that the area of the language assessment center we make sure we have everything there that we would need to welcome our families and that's okay for now and then it would be great to have a space somewhere where our refugee immigrant families our newcomer families know that everything they need is in that one space and we have i guess community schools and we have community spaces at every single school now so it was a wish before then so maybe in that space that will be where we can house a welcome center at every single site so more discussion to come all right well i'd like to see that a reality too i know we've been talking about it so we'll maybe move forward towards that superintendent all right yes sir all right thank you all right so this brings us to our next slide so as you can see here uh back in 2003 you had a english learner master plan and um now it's updated so we have the first now it's a plural lingual master plan assets based written around the english learner roadmap although that's not a very asset-based term we're still going to use that before federal compliance you can see that we go back and forth between english learner which is kind of a deficit term and plural lingual which is a more asset-based term in our plan and the reason is because this plan also meets our federal requirements so the plan is uh serves dual purposes one so we can make sure that the state and the federal government they know exactly what we're doing with the money and that we're serving our scholars making sure we're building the capacity of our staff and serving our families appropriately with that money the second purpose is to make sure it's a living document so that each year we can update it and make sure our staff can actually access it they can ask access all the updated forms and they know exactly where to find everything related to our plurilingual scholars whether they are plural lingual scholars that are in a language acquisition program towards greater english proficiency or in any one of our eight world language programs or in either one of our dual language immersion programs for vietnamese or spanish and korean on the horizon right in the future so it's a recommendation of our dlac and of our plural lingual services department we're asking for a recommendation um we are recommending to the board that you approve and accept and approve our plan and we'll stop right here all right all right well i'll entertain a motion i'll move that and i would like to say i was really impressed with that document thank you enjoyed going through it and reading the different things and and you're going to be updating some of the the um statistics that were in there you know and i look forward to that but this is one i really really enjoyed this and so i'm gonna i've clipped it together so i can take it home and and you know but it's just really well done ladies phenomenal job all right well i have a motion in a second all in favor motion passes unanimously well i want to congratulate that [Applause] i do want to congratulate all of you because all of you have been part not only part of dlac but i see you out in the community doing other things which actually support our students and our families so thank you on behalf of the community as well appreciate all the work that you guys are doing thank you and do we come back to take a picture or after the presentation we're not done there's more to come i know just it's a gift that keeps giving okay we're close though we're close so it is my pleasure also to give you a small update about project learn you remember last year we told you that in partnership with cal state fullerton with dr allison dover dr faramarias vice our partners at cal state fullerton we applied for the spencer foundation grant around this work that we've done from summer language academy saturday language academy now project learn this year we piloted with 10 willing brave braving up teacher teacher leaders this curriculum to make trans languaging plural lingualism culturally relevant sustaining pedagogy um even more of a reality in our classrooms and so um next year i'm proud to say that we're gonna have 30 more teachers and we keep expanding so we're very proud of this work and we're proud of our partnership and um and you might remember this slide as well so it's really really i mean we know summer language academy is so special and again kudos to cynthia vasquez pettit deanna diana fujimoto and the team who began that work here we continue it and it's so great to be able to add to it i remember cynthia said you're just going to take it further you're going to do more and so i'm trying to honor those words that she said to me and so in partnership we're making sure that we are honoring the quest for civic engagement for all of our scholars including our newcomers so as a part of salah as a part of sla and now as part of project learn we have integrated this youth participatory action research so when you visit summer language academy when you visit these classrooms saturday language academy you see our newcomers researching but i'm not going to talk too much more about it because we do have a teacher leader here soon i well i have to say like ex teacher leader right because now she's our assistant principal at dale our new assistant principal joanna peters who's going to come up and she's going to talk about her experience and project learn you can see here in your packet you see that this is just one example of our scholars deciding they know their communities best they know the assets that they bring that their families bring and they also know what they want to make positive changes around and so this is just one example of how our scholars investigated and decided they want to make positive change in their community and so with that i'm going to bring up joanna peters good evening as dr bryant mentioned i'm here to share my experience with project learn when i first began with the research project i was teaching eld 1 and 2 at dale junior high and from the onset what really impressed me and i appreciated the most was the level of professional learning that we engaged in and the impact it had on our classrooms so we began the year by doing professional learning on trans languaging in the classroom we reflected on our current school practices within our classroom we collected data analyzed it then developed lessons based on our learning from there we collected further data reflected and continued to engage in this process throughout the academic school year in addition we were able to collaborate with teachers from outside of our content area and what i found in participating in this project that within my classroom i found a greater sense of comunidad complexity and confianza within the classroom with trans languaging practices it really empowers our students to make those conscientious choices to move between their linguistic repertoires in order to um best express their ideas depending on the task and purpose and so what is so empowering and uplifting about this is that to me this is like a growth mindset approach to education because it really sends the message to our emergent bilinguals that their language and the language choices that they make are not a barrier to their success but it is an asset that gives them power and voice and in order to accomplish all of this in my classroom i had to really transform a lot of my current classroom practices change the structure which ultimately led to an increased rigor within my classroom and i'm really proud to say that my students met that increased rigor with a greater sense of purpose that ended up extending into their overall involvement in our greater school community so this year i had more students than ever participate in after school sports i had a lot of students turning in the majority of their schoolwork i had many students actually also ask to be a part of developing cultural diversity lessons alongside our plural lingual task force and they took the initiative to become a part of this in addition to that i had one of my eld1 students join and become a member of asb and i had several students participate in our school-wide soapbox beach competition even more touching was that my eld1 student who participated in the competition had several of her classmates come and stay after school to watch her deliver her speech on the need to take action against graffiti in our community in order to do this i really did have to brave up and make those choices and those changes in myself as an educator to see this amount of growth among my students and i'm so thrilled and happy that i did because i felt that not only did i grow as a person but my students grew in their personal like confidence their academic achievement and i felt like we ended the school year on such a high note that it was literally like an emotional like goodbye party where the students were wanting to take selfies with everyone and just that community and that sense of empowerment was beyond anything i'd ever seen and i feel that that was possible because of this new approach to education and it makes me happy as i'm working in the summer language academy to see an extension of what we did in project learn with our ypar projects and watching our eld one and two students over the summer be enthusiastic showcase their voice use trans languaging practices to empower and recognize that they themselves have a lot of power and it they have a voice that definitely deserves to be heard so with that we also have a presenter so we have gia lopez one of our plurilingual scholars who is going to be presenting a poem that she created thank you page 37 hi my name is gia lopez i would like to tell you a little about myself i came to california on december 2019.

everything that they said you've you've always been one of the kindest people to me ever since i came to the district and i i have always appreciate that and i'll take it with me so congratulations all right i also want to give the flow back to you we'll do a round two uh dr egan's congratulations we love you as well all right yes congratulations [Applause] all right well thank you very much folks and uh well i'll keep my comments i'm gonna go ahead and board of trustees report um go ahead oh you gotta start with me yeah okay so basically since the last board meeting um i i went to the okay i have to say this the magnolia agricultural thing i went to that first thing they had there and i loved looking at it and everything and then i was able to you know donate a couple things to the to the garden uh through the assistance league that i'm a part of but i was really disappointed when you guys were talking about the um first harvest and i didn't hear anything about it but then i went home and i started reading my emails well i hadn't read my emails for a couple of days and but this was last minute notice and so i was really hurt until i read that and i went okay well i try to get to my emails on time but i don't have some tomatoes at home do you want me to send it to you no [Music] that's a tomatoes oh i'm going to have a lot too but i still wanted to be there and see it because i wanted to get to the to the berries that was the best i'll show you some pictures it was really nice okay good um so anyway next time i i'm i want to be i want to be notified ahead and if if they don't send if they only send an email call me okay i attended insurance meeting and then i went to the buena park state of the city and this time they did say some things about anaheim union yeah um because i and i basically went up to the city manager and i said if you guys don't talk about us this time i'm not coming anymore and he but he did so he heard me the last time i guess then i went to a discipline i think i went to a disciplined meeting did we cancel that when there was something we cancelled okay and then um i also went to the cypress community the policeman's appreciation luncheon and uh you know i try to support that each year and then of course our graduations we went to i went to the hope graduation and and oxford and magnolia and western and cyprus and kennedy but i missed a couple of them so um but i did also go to our retirement tea we did have one this year in person which was nice we had a few of our retirees show up you know hopefully next year we can do something a little bit sooner and get more and then uh of course manuel went to you and jackie's retirement party i'm going to miss you who am i going to unload my tomatillos on yeah and my tomatoes you know you appreciated my tomatoes too so but anyway so best of luck enjoy your vacation i know you'll be around we're going to see you you can't just totally disappear so that's what you say yeah okay so uh i attended the um the graduations and i'm proud to say that i attended um all of our graduations this year i want to applaud this is too hard i want to applaud shenanigans [Laughter] as she's affectionately known shawna your team did a fabulous job this year i think it was just a wonderful celebration um you know from from from last year to this year i think everyone was just delighted it was just such a celebratory uh moment um everything um for the most part went without a hitch it wasn't anything that the team did maintenance i mean everything was beautiful uh the sound we could hear um you know everything was just really celebratory the families were incredibly happy to be able to be on the field and it was just really a wonderful tribute to um you know the whole year the celebration and thank you for putting that together so well and executing that it's your swan song and we appreciate all the work that you've done you're leaving behind such big shoes to fill you took our district from um oh gosh where were we um with the number of suspensions um the number of i think discipline actions that and i think were just really um they were punitive to more of a restorative um a lot due to a part of the work of of the district but your your your individual con i don't want to say confrontations but collaborative work with our administrators and the call those conversations were courageous so i have to commend you to bring our district to i mean we don't even have any hardly any expulsions and we work collaboratively with our team to really find creative solutions for a lot of our students and you've helped shaped that culture of kindness our fitness in our district and i'm going to miss you so thank you so much shawna for everything that you've done and um i attended a delicate assembly and i attended our rop meetings where we all and i learned that superintendent jim marino was moving on to another district due to uh you have personal reasons um she and her husband had been working in two different cities and it was it was uh growing hard for her to um you know work here without him and vice versa so she made the decision to because they have property in the desert so she's gonna be working there and so we put our new superintendent through the ringer i would i'll probably just say that he didn't just get appointed you know arbitrarily uh we interviewed him and it it was a two hour gruesome interview for him um and not only did he have to answer the questions but yeah he had to answer follow-up questions i think that was a really tough interview for him but he he uh he came out of it i think all the better he earned that position so uh dana lynch a new superintendent for rop um i attended the employee recognition night at the angel stadium that's always fun to get to go to a game and celebrate all of our employees i attended the classified employee of the year celebration it was really fun hopefully next year we can do it in person the retirement tea was intimate but very special magnolia farm [Music] and of course manuel and jackie counts retirement that was just a really wonderful celebration i really loved that clip that they found of you manuel that was awesome that was really on the christina show i actually know who that is i watch it even though it's in spanish i i watch it sometimes because it's very sensational in i didn't quite understand you were advocating for um the for identity of being a english language student or i to go ahead and explain that clip it it was about identity it's about who i am and going through the challenges of being an immigrant and speaking multiple languages and the challenges of just being proud of who i am um and so that's that's what the poem was about and you look exactly the same yeah i do i agree with you only difference is the hair color that's all that was amazing that was amazing but manuel um whenever i think about um our district and i think about you i've always thought that um you've been our heart um our heart in the you know in our district and um you're leaving such a legacy behind that's just what i think about you um all the programs that you have started and they're really not programs they're they're they're just a part of what we do i hate to take to clarify them in that in that sense um but i know you've put your heart and soul and i know that we will carry on your legacy you have so much to be proud of my goodness i you know our aim program our partnerships are collaborative um i think the tributes came and started coming in as soon as you announced your retirement so i know that today i don't want to cry i want this to be a celebration of you but just know that um you're really leaving um you're leaving um just so much for us um big shoes for robert to fill um in taking your your place um i always remember the first lcat meeting and just how amazing it was for you to get all those people to you know just to to get in sync and that's what you do you get all of us in sync and to be like-minded and think of the children and think of of the district as a whole and i'm going to miss you a lot i miss you a lot and i i thank you tremendously for everything that you've done i know thank you is not enough but it's coming from every part of who i am and what i believe in um and i i thank you so much all right thank you evans randall trio ms smith i don't have much to report other than i attended the insurance committee meeting but i think it's obvious to everyone that i am nursing myself from a nasty fall six weeks ago and i've been told it's going to be possibly another four to five months that i'm going to be dealing with it so it makes me particularly sad because i couldn't attend your event and i'm happy and sad tonight because people like you and shauna have made the joy of this job in all the years that i have worked here so many people have come and gone and some you could say goodbye to and others they take part of your heart away and i'm going to say that about you two and then i look at patty here and the work you have put into the reports and the massive amount of energy and knowledge and background and education and experience it takes to do your jobs and the general public doesn't even understand what you do renee they they don't even have a grip because they don't know about your entity within this system and then i look back at miss psychology back there and what you do and how big it is and how grandiose it the job has become and then people talking about community schools and new jobs of going to this or retiring and it's part of life and life sometimes is happy and sad so i'm saying tonight i'm really sad because i know i'll probably never see you again but i know shawna that wherever you are going to be the people you're going to be working with they're going to feel the same joy that i think guys can say that everybody has had here working with you you are truly beautiful and i've told you that a zillion times well you truly your mom and dad just created a wonderful human being and so what a gift and i want to thank you and manuel your mom and dad created a wonderful person and i just will miss you but you always be close in my heart with wonderful memories and i i want to thank everybody and i haven't specifically said anything about paulina and connie but they're at the tip of the iceberg of wonderful human beings capable responsible energy and all the things that make a country and a community better so from my heart i want to thank each and one of you you forgot john pardon you forgot john he's over there he's power oh my god he's sitting behind that so he's going to see you oh my goodness hi miss o'neal oh yeah it's always great to be able to end a meeting with some laughter isn't it so i've attended most of the or what they have said i've attended meetings so really quick attended six i think was six or seven graduations always great and shauna did a great job this year and in converting the process into something even better than we had before retirement tea is always fun it was very small this year but it was still it was still nice buena park state of the city as miss percy said they actually talked about the schools um and so we were very pleased to hear about that they actually actually said a few more than just a couple words too which is great to hear i think new city manager wasn't it yeah that's why um magnolia farm was a great experience i didn't get to go to the first harvest but you know i've seen what's going on there and that's a fantastic experience looking forward to seeing it uh when the new school year starts up and see what where we go from there i attended the anaheim secondary council pta dinner very very small event sort of like the t many people didn't show up that said they were going to show up but i have to hand it to peggy cruz um you know she came through uh she's she's she really pulls the pt uh together for the district and she just keeps right there and keeps working hard so i have to hand it to her i went to uh manuel and jackie's retirement dinner uh party event celebration um it was all of that and it was fun to see and hear about uh your lives uh in education and i have to uh i'm not going to repeat what they've said they've said a lot about you i remember when we first hired you and watched you progress through the various positions through the district and every time you moved you left shoes to fill and it was obvious when when you came into the district office that you were going to really be someone that we could count on to move us forward and look where we are today so i i know you're going to go into your next uh childhood and have a great time with your wife and family and it's uh you know you have years ahead of you to go and have fun and and enjoy the other side of the world now so relax enjoy what you have coming and uh shauna you too you're not going to be relaxing but it's going to be a but it's going to be a whole new life for you i wish you well it's going to be exciting for you i know and i know you'll do a good job for that school district and and now we have to fill your shoes so uh i'm looking forward to that event too to happen i think i've covered everything um and that i haven't done anything except john oh i'm sorry john what can i say [Laughter] [Music] okay let me start with john john i just love your hair man all right well the graduations were phenomenal uh again shauna thank you for leading that team i attended all but one which is the oxford academy graduation i would have been there but unfortunately things were unraveling in anaheim so i had to be at the city council meeting to give a piece of my mind so but it was great great all of the graduations were great i think none of the graduations had anything that we could even say that something was wrong so i think everything went on smoothly so that's your leadership so thank you and we're going to miss that i couldn't attend the retirement team i was looking forward to it especially to see you but fortunately i get to see you at different uh another event too but uh yeah so my regrets on that one mac the mac farm i i have great pictures of awesome produce that we harvested so it was really nice to see that and we connected with ponderosa community where they actually put together the more than 20 boxes of food and they dropped it off at ponderosa community so it went to some of the families that are part of auhsd so that was awesome to see and what was even better to see was our students um actually first time giving us tours of uh the farm and they were so great and we were talking about the work that they're doing at the ilab related to the mac and how they're planning marketing and i was just talking about the experience that we're giving our students which is phenomenal some of that i wouldn't have had it even in college so our autism students are going the right direction um i we were attended the rop superintendent uh search it was on a sunday afternoon we went all the way till from sunday afternoon from uh i think was at 12 30 all the way to like 5 36 so we we did put the new superintendent through the ringer we got a great one so we wanted to say uh thank you to terry j moreno for years of service but also congratulations to dana lynch anaheim supervisor doug chafee's office actually has a program which is future leaders i was glad to see some of our au hsd students participating in it and they were taking a lead role so congratulations to our students here i also participated in sharon corksilva's gun orleans awareness month press conference that she had we had a quite a few number of elected leaders and also school board members who spoke and i was one of them spoke against some of the violence that's happening and then shauna congratulations again and uh i always want to thank you for picking up my phone call 8 o'clock at night or sometimes during the weekend when stuff happens and you are readily available to assist and get me the information i really appreciated it please don't change your phone number pass it on to well i'm not going to call you about auhsd issues i was just going to say give that phone number to whoever is going to fill in and let them know that i'll be doing the same but uh no i want to thank you all seriousness for the work that you did all these years with auhsd and congratulations to you and i'm i'm sure that you're going to do some great work in your new district so thank you having said that my twin brother manuel [Laughter] i i did offer to stand in for you for pictures so but for a charge but i just want to tell you thank you for all the service that you did to a uhst i remember i don't know if you remember but uh i remember our first conversation was at the anaheim area hotel uh heath dinner i was talking to i think i was talking to mike about uh getting some information about au hsd and uh sycamore and they they pointed to you and said he's the guy and i remember sitting there just with you and me sitting and just you just kind of gave me the rundown of sycamore junior high and i am high school and i think you were at sycamore at that time so you were kind of giving me what you did and uh that just opened up my eyes so i want to thank you for even you know reaching out and doing the work that you do now but you did it with such ease so i want to thank you and i think i said it at your retirement there are people in the community still remember the impact that you had on their lives and i think it was also evident when we had the collaborative i was surprised to see the vice president of fulton college being one of your students so that's huge that shows the depth and the impact that you had in our community so thank you for your service appreciate it we're going to miss it but by all means enjoy hawaii and enjoy retirement so thank you please i know i'm going to get your private number which i think i have i'm going to call you so thank you all right so uh advanced planning future meeting dates our next meeting of board of trustees will be held on thursday july 14th 2022 at 6 00 p.m uh any suggested agenda items 16.2 see none i'll entertain a motion i have a motion and a second all in favor aye aye all right motion carry

and other family members of the the this class superintendent dr whodanic principal steve attello staff wonderful teachers i am so happy to be here today you had two years of covet pandemic that did not deter the teaching and your learning at this school i i have a catchy song from 1945 now there aren't too many of us that were around back then and at least i was a kid i wasn't grown but a singer by the name of johnny mercer who none of you heard of um followed by bing crosby frank sinatra and sam cook they sang a song which i'm not going to sing so you're lucky but it goes like this you've got to accentuate the positive eliminate the negative latch on to the affirmative and don't mess with mr in between it's very catchy when you're singing around singing around the house or in the shower well that's what we do at tech and that's what you did even during the dark days with no contact with your friends other than your cell phones your your text computers and things that i probably don't even know you had no sports you took the lemons and you made lemonade and this is thanks to the teachers and administration of the school i thank you parents for your guidance for your help without which this would not have worked you helped stay the plan even with the uncertainty that we all faced now i'm here on behalf of the entire board of education they all asked me to congratulate you class on this big day what makes tech such a great school is that you can go in so many directions whether it's in service organizations college anywhere taking other advanced training or using one or more of the skills that you gain at our school when you go into the workforce for those going to advanced schools you know there is at least you have at least one technical it is an honor to be standing here tonight now i'd like to thank everyone for joining us as i look at you all i cannot help but see all of our futures i have read many past valedictorian speeches looking for the right thing to say and through my research i found many recurring sentiments one of these sentiments is the phrase the future doctors and lawyers sitting in front of me now i've pondered on this thought and i have this to say graduates we will all go different places and directions not one way is the right way but in time we will all find our own way what matters most is finding happiness the ancient greek philosopher aristotle once said happiness is the meaning and purpose of life the whole aim and end of human existence i couldn't agree more not all of us will choose traditional education paths or professions for those whose ambitions are to become these doctors and lawyers i wish you happiness and i wish all my fellow graduates this happiness happiness and what you do and what you have success is in the eye of the beholder this may be your salary your family what you do for others or simply just surviving i couldn't possibly read every mind and know what the success will be for you but i can wish you happiness within it for me my success will be this happiness you do not need to pursue happiness let it guide you through your next adventures and into your futures thank you and congratulations [Applause] at this time i would like to call to the stage class of 2022 student government president kelly scott for the presentation of the class gift okay i'm going to call the meeting to order at uh and i need adoption of the agenda please oh never mind then oh yeah i see it proposed okay proposed hearing so um is it julie that's gonna okay madam president members of the board colleagues um today we're going to be talking about the 2223 proposed budget first thing i want to do is cover a few statutory budget requirements and deadlines we are required to approve a proposed budget no later than july 5th between july 5th and 15th we have to publish a notice of public hearing we have to have that at least 10 days prior to our adoption by july 15th we do have to do our budget adoption and submit the proposal to ade then on october 15th we'll do our annual financial report for the prior year in december 15th we do have to do any budget revisions that are outlined by ade this is adoption optional if we don't have any ade requirements then by may 15th we have to do the final budget revision the reason i point those deadlines out is be can you hear me now there we go we the reason i point out those deadlines is because the state budget has not been approved the auditor general was required to publish the 23 budget forms by june 3rd so we are once again in a preliminary status the preliminary reforms did not account for any routine annual changes which would normally take into account our inflation and any wage weighted average changes that they would propose as of friday the state budget remained unchanged as of today it remains unchanged what this requires is any time we use preliminary forms we have to do a budget revision no later than september 15th so although it's not in statute know that these forms will be coming back to you for consideration we took limited budget assumptions when preparing the fy 23 budget we did a base level amount increase of two percent we changed the base level from 4 ninety dollars and sixty five cents to four thousand four hundred seventy eight dollars and forty six cents we did not change adm any weighted averages or indexes or any transportation factors the other change that we did do is we took in the classroom site fund utilizing the fy 23 rate which has been confirmed at 708 the proposal shows that we're going to be spending over 20 million dollars on regular education which is almost 69 percent of our budget special education will receive almost 7 million dollars transportation just over 2 million and our k-3 reading program and dropout prevention will receive just under two hundred thousand dollars if we look at another way our salaries and benefits are going to be almost 24 million dollars that's 80 percent of our budget that's right in line with what it should be purchase services are just over four million dollars supplies just under two million dollars and other expenses such as fees things of that nature are going to run us about eighty three thousand dollars that is the proposed budget for the fy23 again as the state budget is finalized we will bring revised numbers but are there any questions in regards to the information presented thank you so we don't have any we're not do that was just information yep perfect so why do i need to call it to order we're already in all right so i'm going to make i'm going to call this meeting to order at 206.

wait a minute so do we i need approval of the meeting agenda all in favor aye so we have three board members present and we have two absent right we have that written down somewhere okay i can't write it sorry i'm tapping technical difficulties over here so what do we have on our agenda next okay i pledge allegiance okay so do we have any public comments awesome so 5.1 discussion information regarding district uh celebrations for the 2122. you guys go ahead pull up that slide okay so what we're going to do uh first is is the way we're going to go ahead and talk about celebrations for this year i know we've done it differently in the past years because we're going to look at at what is a rough of the annual report this annual report will be printed in hard copy um probably uh tail end of july there are still components to it that may be added uh there's issues with not issues but we have information on the on the finances that need to be updated as we get as we close out the school year uh we've also included as part of our uh homes educational foundation we put out a push for a different way of doing donations and so part of their donations if you're at a certain level you end up getting a full page ad half page ad quarter page ad eighth page ad in here based on what you what you donate so we already have people that are donating to the point where they'll get a full page ad and we anticipate over the next month um that we'll get additional uh ads and just just so everybody's on the same page our donation levels are 7 500 6 000 5000 4000 3000 so um if you're doing a full page ad it's a substantial donation uh by that company and we have one possibly two for sure at that level and we're working on some others so when you see stuff in here if you have a concern at the very end of this we'll have a discussion about what else we need to do when we come to celebrations um but if you see something in here just make sure you talk to kayla or myself trying to make it fit within the report but also fit within the spaces that are available to make the presentation or such that at times not everything can fit the way we want just the way we're doing it there'll be some stuff in here that we'll spend more time on uh later on but we just wanted to at least start it that way okay so what we're doing uh this year if you're not aware we really started to look at a report that we dealt with which is called the road ahead combs 2035.

gorman here having the emotion second to approve tonight's agenda so moved second nolan yes yes rape yes bulk bob hill yes gorman yes please join us as we recite the pledge of allegiance i pledge of the allegiance states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all all right thanks for everybody who came out tonight and those uh watching remotely and attending remotely i guess we have camera issues when our audio is working any more details on that or is that good um again i apologize for their camera issue it was working earlier today but thank you for joining us via audio and we also have visitors joining us tonight we have cara gravitt vice president of our cea thank you for being here we have uh numerous administrators um some that will be presenting on the handbook and then we have some new hires that'll be coming for the board tonight i'd like to introduce them uh to you first is our new athletic director mr ted jusky if you want to well you're pretty tall dude i think i think so and then i'm pleased to announce that we're um have a new assistant principal a preview on mr edgar pereira he's coming to us and then um we have matthew woolworld who's coming to us as our communications director with experience both in education and in news media anchoring and producing see how long that lasts nice wow that was because i got a [ __ ] record show that happened at 603 pm and i think on that we're going to roll right into the public we actually have um connie collins who's joined us tonight from from the community but tonight right now all i want to speak about is the um trans quote unquote gender agenda um i'm having a real problem with it i think it's a political ideology that's being pushed on our children i know when i say that people get nervous but if you look at the facts biden issued 17 equity executive orders in 2021 alone he just issued another one june 15th of this year saying he's taking new and additional steps to advance lgbtqi and equity so those are the facts this is a political agenda that's being pushed on our children in 2020 150 000 people are identified as quote unquote transgender after this administration took office in 2022 there's now 1.4 million people who identify as quote unquote transgender that is an 833 percent increase you can't tell me it's not because this agenda is being pushed in our schools in our institutions in our businesses in our culture in our media and our children do not need to be exposed to this it's harmful to them and i say no i say no transgender quote-unquote is not is who's driving this whole agenda the rest of it the rest of the people that are supposedly in this group don't have are not being addressed at all it's just this segment of the population but it's being forced on our kids it's being taught to our kids it's being taught as like a normal part this is part of the real world now you have people have discourse you have to be able to do this you want to incorporate it throughout the whole curriculum from math to reading to science to all of it so now joey who yesterday was joanne is gonna teach your kid how to diagram a sentence it's wrong and i say no so i'm gonna end with two quotes from two people who are a lot smarter than i will ever be the first one is douglas murray who wrote a terrific book called war of the west treat people as individuals and reject those who would try to reduce them to membership of a group they belong to solely by accident of birth the second a little bit more edgy from thomas sowell schools exist for the education of children schools do not exist to provide iron-clad jobs for teachers billions of dollars in union dues for teachers unions monopolies for education bureaucracies a guarantee market for graduates of teacher colleges or a captive audience for indoctrinators thank you for your time thanks scotty thank god we'll move on to action reports uh motion second to discuss and approve the consent agenda so moved second in your board packet you have your revenue and expenditure reports you can see that our revenues are currently um for the month of may at 52.28 compared to 56.30 percent 37 a year ago last may expenditures are 66.48 compared to 67.01 a year ago in may no impact fees or transition fees were received this month since last board meeting and then the bills payable for june um is typical for both northern kane and central there's a bigger volume because we're closing out the year all the secretaries are cleaning up all the opo's that they have um ordering stuff for next year so that way they can have it here before the teachers start in the school year and then there's also some bond and interest payments in there questions for dan all right yes nolan yes gorman yes next emotion second required to discuss and approve the proposed changes to the middle school handbook are there any questions i know that was presented last month to you my only question is with uh not really a question just to comment i'll comment the information reports that um the dress code is based on section 716 i believe the war policy um with additional verbage in all the handbooks so um so yeah i would like to uh i'll just bring it up address the board policy yeah just because i'd like to address support policy and so yeah anybody else agrees we may have to change this anyway but you know so okay talk about it then ready rabe yes fog yeah dan phil yes nolan yes yes gorman yes we need a motion second to discuss and approve the depositories so moved a second so this is an annual thing that we have to approve our primary banks that we use or other financial things currently we use old second bank in the illinois funds i always put pma securities on there in case we want to you know shift some money from one to the other depending on interest rates and stuff like that so these are the three that we typically use everything's unchanged falk i like this version yes nolan yes yes gorman yes earning motion second to discuss and improve individuals to serve as treasurer for the district activity funds second you can take fall so this one is another annual one that we do every year typically we have pam israelson and the high school secretary be the two treasurers this year we're changing it a little bit because all of the deposits bankrupt everything now comes to the business office before it was 100 on them now we've transitioned it into ours because it's part of our um our accounting system and everything now um so we i recommend that myself be the treasurer for this as well with everything else since i'm already properly bonded um but then leaving pam and amy rodriguez as the administrative assistants to coordinate all the paperwork and stuff behind the scenes sounds good to appoint a committee chair uh additional member to serve on the audit committee so moved thank you second good another additional annual thing that we do every year um last year dr nolan and president gorman were the ones that served on our thing um we need one member basically to answer the phone calls from the auditors it's usually a five minute call and it'll be for both central and northern kane um doesn't take long i don't know how long it was but probably three minutes so because things because things went well so there was nothing to talk about in a good way yes so we start august 8th so usually august 8th 9 10 is when they'll want to talk to somebody for a few minutes so it's like a good jay and mark thing to do don't you think i think folks should do it yeah he would love that right folk sure i would love that no idea i'll do it okay here we go yes will you watch your mouth in all right next we need a motion in a second to discuss and approve uh dana fluge and dr mongan to prepare the tentative budget for 2022 to 2023 school year so much um once again annual thing it's a team effort with everybody um administrators are um people below us and our payroll and our hr finance departments um do a lot of the legwork with us um but we're recommending dr mangan and myself to prepare the budget short straws i'll i'll do it i'll i'll help i haven't done anything yet i'll do it no i don't good why are you repeating him again falk yeah and phil yes nolan yes canara yes rabe yes gorman yes makes motion and second are needed to approve the designation of interest and some of the operating funds to prevent interest monies in these funds from becoming principal second so this is a annual resolution that will allow us to keep the interest from becoming principal in the education fund the operation maintenance fund uh transportation and working cash funds this kind of just gives us the flexibility to transfer the money wherever we need to down the road hey okay yes nolan yep yes right yes well yes gorman yes next motion second needed to discuss and approve the resolution to allow payment of the salaries of buildings and grounds department personnel and utilities to be paid out of the o m fund second um annual uh annual resolution again for um currently the salaries and the benefits and the utility bills are to come out of the ed fund on the state budget this resolution allows us to move it into o m fund which is where we've always had it it makes more sense to put it in there because it belongs to that group so this resolution will allow us to do that nolan yes yes rape yes bulk yes hand hill yes gorman yes motion and discuss and approve any contracts that produce over a thousand dollars of revenue to the district second so this is my last annual thing for the board meeting today so basically the the vendors on here don't change because people like the people that they do fundraising with so attached you'll see all the ones that we typically do um doesn't mean we always make that thousand dollar mark but we always throw them on here for approval sometimes the student pictures don't get quite to the thousand dollar revenue might be eight hundred dollars but we always throw them out and these are the traditional ones that are here and there's no no intentions to find a new vendor at this time yes nolan yes gorman yes next we need a motion second to discuss and approve the prairie view grade school parking lot edition second director peloway is with us we wanted to share with the board a little bit about the bid process even though we were a little late to the game getting that bid out we still had uh three competent contractors uh solicit bids and uh schroeder asphalt and paving uh won the combined bid by the lowest responsible bidder um works out well in their project year and their scope of work they're super busy but it's a small job that they can kind of squeeze in and pair up with some other stuff so it was a good opportunity and it did come in under budget so and they've done paving work for us in the past that we've been happy with it's it could start any time now once it's approved they're ready to roll they're going to start the earth work and start digging it's intended to be completed before school starts so we're adding roughly 33 parking stalls we lost less than 20 when we added the mobiles so we'll be garnishing a few extra parking stalls we were able to kind of push out the front corner of that parking lot that's kind of flat anyways so we didn't have to do any extra detention or drainage work worked out well with cane county so everybody was happy that's why we were able to kind of really push this through so we maximize what we could with that space and are you adding going towards nessler or is torx nessler rape yes bulk yeah sorry downhill yes nolan yes yes gorman yes all right we need a second uh motion and second to discuss and approve the overnight trip um for the central boys track team so moved second this trip actually um occurred in may i informed the board of of both uh this overnight trip and the middle school one at the main meeting but it wasn't didn't make the agenda because of the timing [ __ ] yep and pill yes nolan yep yes rabe yes gorman yes and we need motion second to discuss and improve the overnight trip for the three members of the middle school track team to go to state so moved second hand hill yes nolan yes last action item abortion second to approve the contract for prom at the 2023 center so you have a memo in front of you um for the rental of the q center and that's because um any contract that would exceed 25 dollars has to come in front of the board so um the prompt is fully funded through the student activity accounts so they raise they raise dollars and stuff to cover the cost of it all right it lasted a lot longer before getting there than i thought we would i think it's a great option well the q setters went very well right it's the biggest space in king county isn't it isn't it the biggest formal space in king county i believe it is yeah that's why um cows always had their you know heather i think of a thousand people in that room all seated it's a big room that's great nolan yes canara yes rabe yes walk yeah yes gorman yes it does beat chs prime of 97 at bill olivia oh yes good times classy information items we have a proposed changes to elementary parent school handbooks you might want to raise that up a little bit there oh yeah good evening board so as you heard from the middle school last month you guys received a memo in your board packet i'm here presenting elementary you know we work collaboratively across all three i won't go through each of these but i would update or highlight we did a bunch of language to change some of our covid policies that we had to make them relevant again to next year's standards we added some language on the mtss program we're very excited that that program's rolling through and then we added with the law changes of the board policy uh and administrative procedures in conjunction with title ix did you guys have any questions about any of those changes thank you so much happy belated father's day to all the dads to you maybe you'll get a good night's sleep tonight next we have a proposed changes to the high school handbook i'm not as tall as grady and so we also work collaboratively across the whole elementary middle school and high school work together and there are a lot of the same changes that you heard presented by the middle school a couple of additional things we obviously have some personnel changes that will need updating we also have one of our major ones was student parking we changed it to junior and senior only i know that that's sometimes brought up some issues with parents saying well it says sophomores too but we don't have enough parking to offer to our sophomores so we wanted to make sure that that language was cleaned up we also removed all of our covet language we did have to update all of our times as far as tardy policy attendance policy in conjunction with what we are doing for our time change for the school day for our seniors all the way through freshmen and then we also changed summative assessments instead of saying final exams we now are seeing summative assessments because it's all encompassing and so we have some people that do projects and other alternative assignments we don't have a final exam schedule so then it allows everybody a little bit more broad language there as a result of our bio schedule change we also changed our credits so that has been updated in the handbook i know this came up in the middle school i'm talking about honors since our senior awards were changed we now use the cumulative magnitude and summa [ __ ] laude so that has changed and been updated instead of reading as honors and high honors and then we had an update to our athletic and activity sites that has also been updated in addition to that we had a lot of language cleanup to match all of the changes that were in the board policy from this most recent change so you'll see multiple things in here that's just a matter of matching up their language to make sure that that's consistent with the board policy questions for me uh clarification i guess on the you know you don't have a change on it but the middle school actually discussed the dress code and so i'm wondering why the need for the fingertip rule um just because all everybody's doing that so everybody's different so i made everybody's body's different everybody's fingers knuckles yeah somebody's got super long stretch yes so ours is also now consistent with board policy um so you'll see the language is consistent there well it's consistent but then it includes additional verbiage because that's not important the additional verbiage was removed in our handbook and in addition to that we also made sure that we indicated where it said small bags i know the backpacks came up as well making sure that those are in the lockers we added an additional small bag instead of saying purse um so then that's uh allows um anybody who's carrying a bag as long as it fits in that size so there was just a couple of things and we worked with the middle school and they made those updates as well made the updates after last month yes for action okay sorry and the medical excuses for uh excuses from pe here um that's on page for board it's on page 223.

i need a adoption of the agenda all in favor motion carries three to zero any public comments no no we don't do we no okay all right so we have uh so our consent agenda is there any um any any questions on this consent agenda no it's just personnel do you have any questions on that um all right so all in favor aye motion carries three to zero so now we have a 7.1 discussion consideration proposed budget is that what we just went over okay do you have any questions do we do you have any questions on that that you want to if no questions then we can just take a motion all right motion carries three to zero okay approve uh purchase of science adoption um textbook materials look at you madam president members of the governing board distinguished colleagues um can we go ahead and put that powerpoint up there you go i would like to bring to you a recommendation regarding our science adoption for 2022 moving forward i'd like to start by thanking the superintendent and our director of business services for giving me money to do this thank you because without that this couldn't have happened so first of all we started this process way back in august uh we got drugged down a little bit by some unforeseen circumstances uh but when we did start back we did create what we called the steering committee that included myself uh marcus berkshire dorsey middau uh christine murphy and karen finn and what we did as a group was we worked through the rfp that we were going to put out on the street and we went through all of the materials that were there we looked at what other districts had done and we created this steering committee that was going to drive what happened with our process the goal obviously our standards have changed and quite candidly madam president members of the board i couldn't tell you the last time the district adopted science curriculum maybe santa could but she's got this perplexed look like don't ask me so boss kids yeah so as you can see it's been a long long long time since there were any resources that were purchased [Music] hey it's my last time up here i have to pick at it since that time we have new arizona state standards that were developed and adopted in 2018 in addition to that now as you know put as part of our hashtag forward we've really been working on changing uh our teaching approach to not only science but to all of our core curricular areas as well as our electives we wanted to align our materials because there is a lot of being used out there by a lot of different people and so we thought it was really important that we bring that in this also gave us an opportunity to involve our our staff and you'll see as i go through this that we did include a large portion of our of our staff and then it also gave us an opportunity to get feedback not only from our teachers and from our staff but from the community although that was really limited uh unfortunately you can see our timeline in january we finalized our timeline uh on february the 9th we notified our the vendors of the rfp on the 22nd and 22nd through the 25th the steering committee those five folks i mentioned we went through what had was submitted there were nine proposals that were submitted uh only eight of them met the criteria of the rfp and so we moved those eight forward on march the 30th we invited a group of educators in to evaluate the materials that we'd been given there were a total of i believe 10 or 12 folks that set through that we went through all of the materials that were presented all eight vendors they were scored those scores were totaled and from there we we moved toward our final three that we then invited to come back to be part of that and see on the eight the steering committee finalized all that work going through uh asking any follow-up questions all of those things and then on the 19th the 20th and the 21st those vendors were invited back those vendors were hmh mcgraw-hill and savas they came and presented and at that point we had a representative from every grade level uh k through eight uh unfortunately at the high school as you guys probably remember we had uh i believe six of the uh science department who either retired resigned or moved on to other places so that was a little bit more of a challenge but mr hill from the high school served as an administrator and he's taught ag and then mr dave who's the new department chair came in and set through those presentations so we had the vendors present their their resources we were able to ask questions we have several folks in this room that were part of that it was a very very uh informative and uh give and take process there were lots of really good questions that came up from our teacher group and from there instead of choosing one finalist to move forward we went forward with all three as you can see in the back we started our 60-day process of displaying our materials so that folks could look one of the things that christine and dorsey worked on was a qr code so that folks didn't have to sit here and look at them they could scan those they could go online and they could look at the materials from home and they could scan through all of that all of the vendors were very helpful in doing that on june 20th that's today uh we're bringing forward to you a recommendation uh for a science purchase i want to tell you that there are three statutes that we follow ar a a r s 15 7 21 and 7 22 talks about how books and materials are to be selected and the board's involvement and the community's involvement in that and then asr 15 213 is the actual process of purchasing those books and what has to happen and i'm proud to say in my 40 years of education i have never gotten in trouble for either one of those and we're not going to start today but just be aware that we followed all of those very closely i did want to share with you that our curriculu our criteria for what we used was we looked at the curriculum they presented what were the programs um that was going to be 60 of our evaluative tool the other 40 would be cost we had a budget of 650 000 i'm going to tell you that we came in under that significantly came in under that these are the folks that were on the educator evaluation committee that looked at all eight you can see the different folks that were there angie was the elementary rep for the administrators carl for the secondary uh alex fantasco say that right she was our elementary teacher jamie calhoun was at the middle school and then brent stonecipher for the high school and then for the large group you can see i'm not going to go through all of those but you'll see that there is a grade level attached to a name so everybody was represented including our sped folks as well as as we go on uh connie from technology we had two coaches that were part of that and then our district office folks which included christine as the content science folks brenda harrow was another one of our as an ela or an el she was working on that side and then karen finn is our buyer so any questions on the process thank you i anticipated that jelly that's the reason i did it so with that said if we can go back to the rfp we're going to recommend to the governing board we would like to pursue uh mcgraw-hill with a total cost of four hundred and forty thousand nine hundred and eight dollars and 44 cents so our committee was able to come almost 155 000 in under budget which will be good because math is next online and i'm not sure what that's going to look like i will tell you the biggest reason for the savings is that everything that we're purchasing with the exception of some readers for the younger grade levels is going to be digital uh that's and it's a six year contract that we're looking at so there's my presentation not bad for my last one ever right i think that the fact that it's digital i i don't prefer digital but i have to say that since sarah went into college that is all they have so they're going to have to get used to it and and we had some conversation i will tell you some of the teachers group really wanted some resources but they it becomes very it really jumps the price of of those resources up um and this way you can work to renew the contract when it comes back up or you can look you know satisfied it was just a hard transition for her so i think that's a good transition for them yeah most districts now um are looking at digital um you know i was a middle school principal and i remember the kids the 70 pound kid with a 60 pound backpack because they had all the textbooks in there and they're back in i was sure they were all going to have scoliosis before they got out of ninth grade but uh we've really moved away from that and i will tell you uh the the three presentations uh in particular mcgraw hills angie you were there dorsey marcus their resource is very easy to use and the teachers were very impressed even our new high school principal who our science teachers coming in was very impressed with the with the materials for the high school so we're recommending k-12 adoption in mcgraw-hill questions for him sorry okay do you want to just come sit by me bob yes or do you want me to why don't i just come sit back oh this comes we can look at the same computer i moved to approve the mcgraw hill as a selected vendor for the new district k-12 science curriculum for the cost of 440 908 dollars and 44 cents as presented all in favor aye aye motion carries 3-0 you're welcome thank you a lot of work way to go out with a bang okay so then we have um 7.3 discussion and consideration of approval of the changes in 2000 uh oh 2223 calendar we're just we're just looking at a very minor modification to the calendar uh based on the start of preschool there's no reason for us to delay the start of preschool the extra week um there's a couple errors on this uh particular calendar so the only thing i would say is you want to have the start date as august 28th for um preschool and the end date if you'll scroll just a little bit higher nope the other way the other direction on the 16th tuesday the 16th of may so i would recommend that it's just um approval of those two changes and those two changes only and then everything else will reflect what you approved uh previously the august or july i think i mean sorry july july july 28th month off july 28th and may 16th any questions all right um i'd like to move to approve the recommended change to the 2022-2023 annual calendar for preschool all in favor aye aye motion carries three to zero so next is discussion and consideration selection of the board member and combs education foundation oh we need a board member yeah so so annually um one of the board members is on the combs education foundation it's mrs hargis right now and so we just need to know who will be the the individual on that for for this current year now there is at least one individual not here so no i'm just kidding so we come back here again and is there any way we can co-chair it like we could do there could be two of us yeah you can you can you can do whatever you you can do whatever you want for sure yeah it's the next it's an ex-official position there so it's a non-voting ex officio all right we're we're willing to do it together okay so we do do need a motion uh and approval of that so i move that the governing board approved the selection of shelly hargis and bob delena as members for the combs education foundation all in favor aye aye motion carries three to zero okay 8.1 discussion and consideration of approval changes policy a district mission and belief statement just based on the discussion we had with the organizational development plan what's in the current policy reflects uh fairly uh old um information i don't think it's ever been updated so this is just a first read but all it does is reflect the new vision the new the new mission the new vision new mission the core values so it's there's no action or anything it's just a matter of a first read and then the second reader would be at the july board meeting okay for approval all right all right we don't have any questions on that right i mean we just spent like an hour and a half on it right okay so 9.1 um oh consideration for future adventure items do you have any burning does questions that need to be answered what would you like are you sure okay and and you said there's a possibility that we could be having another board meeting next week right so if there is a possible board meeting next wednesday everybody available okay okay at least you'll have a quorum okay all right so i'm going to make a motion to adjourn at 2 23.

so the theme of this whole annual report is the road ahead and so we we're taking a look at some issues with where we're going to go in the next decade because of growth obviously there's any number of factors that will come into play this this year i know uh with uh the new uh company that's coming into into our uh attendance area that'll that'll be the start quite frankly of lots of different entities that will come in uh there is no and talking with the city or the town of queen creek in pinal county just so we're on the same page the notion of the land north of germaine south of pecos meridian over to schnepp there is no consideration for anything other than urban employment which means it's going to be commercial development so there is no homes going in there and that matter of fact that stretch of land actually goes all the way over to power or to ellsworth excuse me then it jumps up and between pecos to the airport um that same stretch of land all the way to power is also going to be commercial development so just know there's a corridor in there that's crucial commercial development so that will help us out from a from a financial standpoint in terms of tax base for those living in in the community but it also creates a different set of issues the the homes down south are still growing uh combs ranch is the one that's really starting to take off if you're not aware kenworthy will be a four laner and they'll put a bridge in over the next two years um so it's going to go combs all the way up to um pecos as a four laner so probably the roundabout here on germain is going to get wiped out if you're not paying attention uh jermaine is going six laner all the way from kenworthy to meridian and so why the road ahead for those kinds of ideas there's lots of stuff that's coming in and so how do we get out in front of it how do we take the existing priority map key components of hashtag forward vision and mission work through our organizational plan and what do we do to go ahead and prepare ourselves for the next decade to two decades and so that's the notion of why the roadhead that's the the the uh theme for this particular piece but we want to first look back and celebrate what happened this year so there's a number of celebrations that we want to take a look at and then we'll move forward from there so again just some little numbers it's always critical this is an amount of free meals this is going to change this is going to change uh because the federal government has not authorized and more than likely will not be authorizing free meals for those on the free and reduced plan therefore this year in the last year and a half every kid in our district's got free meals that will not be happening next year we will start a campaign here in the next couple weeks for the fact that parents need to know they have to pay the other problematic issue we have is we do not set pricing for those you that do not know we do not set pricing ade sets pricing and we have not yet received the pricing from from ade so we believe that we're going to see an increase in our pricing however we'll not get that increase until ad provides the information we got some additional information last week and we're just waiting for them to give the rest of it but to give you the impact with the free meals uh we're sitting here at over thousand seven 67 and six thousand seventy five um meals breakfast and lunch and snacks so it's a substantial amount that we're providing kids we would anticipate that number may go down a little bit with the cost especially if parents are not ready for it not used to it 150 000 in child care scholarships so that's for our young coyotes our our pre-k and all that kind of stuff more substantial i think than probably people realize in terms of the number of kids that we serve also critical that we continue to get this message out how are we helping our community those two factors alone are critical for our community it's important that we go ahead and make sure that we are doing what we need to do within our community and when we provide these services it's for kids that might otherwise not receive the services that we provide and i think it's critical because when you look at other areas and other um i'll just say competing schools you're not going to see that same commitment and so when we talk about why public education and where public education this becomes real critical our student scholarships again over 2.4 million scholarships um again that's for both stuff that the foundation did but also obviously what kids received those that are going on to four-year colleges or [Music] post-secondary in some fashion so fairly good numbers all the way around and we would anticipate that this will grow over time we do have some program success that we're going to talk about um how we invested in our resources so we'll talk about a little bit about that i can't kayla did a lot of this and she's uh out today uh ill but um so i can't quite remember which goes with what but paper is an example that we're going to talk about uh hr receiving a healthy worksite recognition in the state we continue that with the platinum that becomes critical um i think we need to make sure that we we keep an eye on that the whole notion of healthy schools healthy workplace it's not something unique to us it's in every organization across the country when we sit and we we think about everything we've been through in the last couple of years the notion of a healthy work site becomes critical in terms of how how people feel so it's not just a case of social emotional for kids it's a case of social emotional for adults as well financial uh outstanding financial reporting um i'll just take some shots here and there today just because that's moved him in just so you know we spent thirty thousand dollars on on our auditing which is what's required across the state many other school districts or other schools not districts but other schools that are not traditional public schools probably spend as little as five thousand dollars on their auditing purposes uh and that becomes critical because in both cases both entities use uh state dollars but obviously one entity is maintaining and being held accountable for how they spend those uh state dollars in comparison to another entity um and so when you get an outstanding financial reporting this is across the country and across the world so it's not something that's just handed out to anybody and everybody you have to meet some criteria and then i think probably the platinum user for major clarity that just becomes a key component when we start to look at what are we doing to help kids get ready for college career ready major clarity which replaced um i can't remember the state program that we used azcis we used it replaced a couple years ago because we had to just based on what was being done at the state level it's basically helping kids plan all the way down to we're looking to go out this year all the way down to fourth grade but this year we did middle school and high school major clarity is the form that we're using and and to receive a platinum power user means that the majority of our kids got engaged and into the program to start to take a look at what they're going to look to do when they move forward and that that's the first component i mean kids at least exploring what are what's out there in terms of uh careers and or college readiness if you're not out there exploring then you don't know and so the fact that we have the number of users we have and we're looking to expand it um means that the kids and the teachers made a commitment to that and that's for all areas it's it's a focus in the help with ct but it's really just working with all kids we're also looking to do a new digital presence with a new website um and so we're hoping that everything will go there's a planned for july one and then the one differences will launch the new website july 1.

um in order to be excused from participation a student must present an appropriate excuse from his or her parent guardian or from a licensed a person licensed under the medical practice act and then it says that it's required from the physician but the first sentence says either or it's it's over two days and that is consistent with the board language yeah there were a few things that we thought were clarified a little bit more but we wanted to make sure that it was consistent with board policy what's the question there i would just hear so many people say i don't need a letter from my doctor because it says parent or medical professional under the um the medical whatever act so i just wondering if there's an open window there for a parent to say well according to board policy it says it's me or the medical professional um yeah it should be a medical professional so we'll take a look at that before because it says one thing in one sentence and the next sentence says something different because that's how i would read it open door we'll take it back come back next month yep okay anything else for me okay thank you all right next we have a capital project update director apollo give some details on the summer projects so my monthly update um the big ones country trails and prairie knolls cafeteria projects are going very well those are ahead of schedule everything's working out very well there you just approved the pv parking lot so that'll be starting in the next uh any day now probably by the end of the week country trails the uh lot entry we're gonna modify the entry into that parking lot also to try to alleviate some of the traffic flow from highland woods so we work with the city of elgin on the plan and we're going to have our contractors that are working through the country trails and prairie knolls paving and concrete work do that work for us we've also done some uh air handler replacement up updates and upgrades at the high school and at prairie view some equipment that's failed or older we took this opportunity we worked with dana to kind of make sure we had the funding to do this and got some of that older dilapidated equipment replaced so that work has already taken place a lot of the other basic updates we do flooring painting we're redoing the flooring and painting in the teachers lounges at hpt and pv trying to get those updated and get those in good shape we've addressed some bathrooms some epoxy floors trying to look at some of those areas that are kind of aged starting to age get those updated looking at some playground equipment some new painting and epoxy opportunities were brought up by our painter so we looked at those opportunities at prairie view and hpt those older playgrounds to kind of update those and just kind of give them a facelift um and then our seal coating will be moving forward with seal coating this month again keeping up with those new lots that we've done over the years it's you know every every couple years we need to put a highlight on that and then we can do some restriping and and things like that and then we've uh some of our 10-year health site life safety items some doors some bathroom fixtures some odds and ends of stuff that were on in the red in that package if you remember those we're starting to chunk off some of those this summer also i'm sure there's other things but um like that's a pretty good parking lot oh yeah um so we were working with uh um dr mongan and dr hogg we started looking at the nestler road and the traffic at pkms in the mornings and afternoons so we kind of brainstormed some opportunities to look at rerouting traffic differently um we haven't talked to pam porto yet so she might be surprised if she's listening to this to kind of reroute traffic on that site to alleviate some of that traffic congestion on nestler we think we have a pretty good plan with some signage some striping and some communication to families but i think that'll this will kind of help alleviate some of that traffic will that be using some of the best parking that garage yeah northern northern space well that parking lot trying to bring in the traffic all the way around the building to alleviate some of that stress that we have in terms of backup in the morning yeah kind of for the elementary school playgrounds is that something you know obviously when i look at hpt my kids have one more year it's not going to affect them but given that you know i think we have some pretty small equipment there for the size of kids that we have for k5 schools that's something i know for some schools they've tried to do fundraisers at the pto level and and you know how does a district go about reassessing when it is time to tear half of it down and spend two hundred thousand dollars and put some equipment it can last another 15 years so we've we've worked pretty well with the ptos country trails right before grady started as grady started working with the ptos to subsidize those the district takes care of a lot of the maintenance and the updating and wood chips and repairing parts and doing all those things and then the ptos have taken kind of the ownership and so we've been working with prairie view and hbt's ptos on some of the opportunities uh that they would have to update with some of the grants and some things so we're very active with it just to be clear it is driven by the pto the full replacement with the exception of prairie view and country trials because we did not have ec there prior if you remember the program was completely at howard b thomas for those who got lots of small stuff yeah yeah so that that's kind of where that conversation about having we're talking pre-k through fifth grade so having that you know multiple level of equipment and all those playgrounds is is important so and then you want to address the change order for country trails cafeteria oh so um so ironically as we're getting ready to tear down the wall in country trails cafeteria i just was doing a walk through with the construction management company and i had a epiphany that it sure seemed like with two spaces it was a lot like prairie view and hbt's cafeteria so i can we put a halt to kind of what we're doing not really anything crazy but put a halt i started talking to to dr mongan and we got grady involved then we started talking about what would be the opportunity to have two spaces instead of one giant one so we played through what the pros and cons kind of how traffic flow what that would look like what we could do to make sure we had vision and all that stuff and i think we came up with a with a pretty good plan to have that kind of same separation where you could still utilize both spaces at the same time you could utilize one space or the other just created a lot of flexibility um with not a whole lot of of change to the original scope the additional changes obviously you'll be adding windows and doors which we took all of that and literally just moved it out so we'll that'll be an additional expense and all that project won't be finalized then until probably christmas break so it it kind of seemed like a good opportunity and as we brainstormed through you know the flexibility it gave us and and greatly thought you know it would work well within their school day allow them to do different things we could have do the why care and all that stuff so it just seemed like a good opportunity now i think that's it all right thanks all right next we received it for you um yes we received a foia from nancy holstein who works with um cannon copiers they requested the lease agreements that we that we have for our copiers in the district we were able to provide them on all the lease information we currently use ricoh copiers but we're not we're not tied to any one manufacturer so we respond to the foil i'm sure they're looking for business all right a lot of annual things but that wraps up open sessions doing a motion second to adjourn the post session so move second canary yes rape yes bulk yes yes nolan yes corbin yes thanks again for coming out

uh we'll be moving to this will get a little bit confusing so we're going to have to pay attention but we have some we have trainings coming up i can't remember when we'll move from school messenger to blackboard messenger that's just our messaging tool to talk to parents and so the training is coming up next week this week june 29th so at the sites make sure someone understands how to use the document uh it'll just get confusing because everybody's talking about messenger school messenger blackboard messenger and the word messenger is in there so people are going to be confused but that's the new presence let's see if this does what it's supposed to do nope so craig there's a live link in here how do i get a live link to the website here i get it thank you okay so first issue that so again with some innovative okay the national school safe program that's our athletic program and to give you a perspective on that there's usually only one in the state each year maybe two macs that are awarded this it's not offered out every single year and we were the only one in the state awarded this this year and so i think it speaks highly of of jason nielsen and what he's doing with that program it's one of our cte programs that's very successful with lots of kids involved um i know we shared some of the success of alex i believe it's alex gould who's a graduate of the district and he works uh he's at asu and he's having a lot of success in in the college journalism but he's also doing pictures as well as other things for the arizona republic a lot of his work is showing up throughout the republic and again it's just a chance to highlight alumni as well as as well as kids that are in the system and we will be working i know when we're looking at some pictures for this document to take a look at the work that the kids do um it's pretty they're doing phenomenal work and how do we get more of their work published in some of the documents that that we do some of the the pictures and the videos that the kids do is pretty pretty impressive we get into some of the more of the specifics on the actual um annual report again students recognize the state level student our student athletes we continue to have success in in that arena and at the middle school with concert and band uh ranking superior in that area we are changing uh uh music director at the middle school this year um so we have to regroup and keep moving on forward with that but yes we have i'm coming from minnesota i believe um okay if you got that take a note deanna i i have the report itself it may be written again this is for this group the report itself and the way it's presented in the in the annual report may be slightly different than this i just i thought i brought it in but i didn't bring it i'll take a look at it okay again this is just an example uh a chance to highlight one of our cte programs that we've chosen to do and and uh part of it is is because of the the level of excellence superior honorable mention rankings not only at the state level but also at the national level and so we're just taking a chance to an opportunity to go ahead and highlight what's taking place in this particular cte program so you have a couple cte programs that are that are extremely successful we also talk about how we work homes cares hashtag home scares how we work with our community and so we decided to highlight several different ways we work with our community the top one again is for a one pill can kill that sherry's doing an amazing job with um and her ability and her strength to tell her story and so we're very very appreciative of that and getting that message out um as we continue to to share something that's that's uh uh really hurting a lot of kids and a lot of families around our country again john does a great job with the community workforce uh in this case we bring in a lot of community uh vendors and people work in our community this would be critical if we look at hashtag forward and the notion of community is one of the drivers within our um within the framework of modern teacher and having them come in and work with our students and then this is example with a student that was at cms if you remember earlier in the year just wasn't quite getting what would be a special birthday so laura and her team stepped in to go ahead and uh help this kid out have a have a good birthday and so again i think it's these kind of stories that as we celebrate what we're doing that we continue to do and we want to think more and more the more celebrations the better we put some stuff in on our spending and our finances a lot of this i'm going to go over in a little bit with the ag's report it's coming from the ag so i'll go ahead and just wait till we get the aeg report on that that graduation rate was a little bit low but that's indicative of uh given the lag time of cobit we know it's going back up this year this gives you the data again i'm going to go share this data in another report so i'm not going to spend time here but it's going out to our community so people can see exactly how we're spending our dollars salary increase again this does not reflect the significant increase this year because it's from 21 but you're still seeing an increase and that's again the ag's report and we'll talk about that a little bit further in the meeting okay so we're going to go into a few things i'm not going to spend a lot of time with this either but this is the bridge to our new vision and our new mission which are these two statements so the vision is empowered learners driving innovation and excellence and we'll talk a little bit about that when we get into organizational plan so i'm not going to spend a lot of time on that but we're trying to get the message out as we move forward what the new vision mission is and then what our core values are integrity innovation learning respectful and nurturing all those things are developed by staff members internally and so this information their handwritten stuff there is linkages to hashtag ford there's linkages to the priority map so it's trying to build on what we had before put it into a different framework and i'll go over the organizational development plan a little bit later in the meeting we'll get into more details this one becomes critical and i will go over this in more detail but for the leadership team when we start talking about the portraits of a portrait of a graduate which is the first thing we did and then we talked about porch of a modern learner parent educator leader school and district this is how all the pieces fit together so this is a graphic visual of what these different pieces are and how they link together we're talking about the skills knowledge and characteristics that we need each one of these four or each one of these six smaller areas that all feed into success at the larger area which is a portrait of a graduate this particular graphic we will start to use more and more as we move into next year so this is the bridge into where we're going in the modern in the future and it starts to make connections if you take a look at it and i'll share more information in another presentation more details but you'll start to see there's themes and terms that come up over and over and over again they're linked to the priority map they're linked to hashtag four they're linked to modern teacher they're linked to the things that we've done in the past so there is a continuity in the way that we're we're doing this particular presentation okay so that's a little bit of celebrations any questions and then we'll take a look we're gonna have a short activity um but first i'll entertain any questions okay so as we celebrate one of the things we want to do now is from at each of the tables there's a number of different ways that we celebrate uh if we talk about the blue apple program or we talk about the recognition of staff both in excellence awards or when we hand people the recognize the different groups each month because it's uh custodians of the month or custodian day or one of those we try to recognize obviously we want to do the superintendent's report but the issue that we have is making sure that we continue to find ways to better celebrate what we do the arena out there is very packed the amount of information that's available to you is overwhelming the negative information at times supersedes the positive information so what are other ways that we need to look to expand how we communicate and celebrate what we're doing so if you'll take some time at your tables and then we'll report out to go ahead and come up with ideas of how we can continue to expand uh what we uh how we report on our celebrations the annual report this is only second year we've done it so that's an example of what can we do that we've never done before well the annual report is an example are there other ideas do you have experiences in other districts or other workplaces that of how you celebrate so let's take we're not going to take a ton of time but let's take about five minutes to throw on some ideas and then we'll we'll uh put them on a piece of paper so i can collect them but then we'll also share out so take a few minutes so go ahead and finish every last couple thoughts and then we'll come back together and and we'll just go around the room but i'll bring the microphone around so people can online can hear so who wants to share out some an idea or two that they were talking about at their table hands go over look at this okay so we were just talking about um having all of the schools in the district come together um once a semester so two times a year to celebrate what everyone is doing at the schools to get elementary kids excited for high school or middle school and just so that we can kind of bring everyone together with the accomplishments so that's kind of what we were talking about over here so we have a little list here of ours um we feel like we need to visualize the awards more on banners on our school buses using the video piece of our marquees that are available right now we're just you know putting things up there i'm utilizing the a plus school application each year we feel like at this table that we should have a school each year apply for a plus i believe our last school to receive that was ranch sue was that correct was no oh okay but you applied though right oh i thought you were oh thank you okay that makes sense so the a plus school application is a great application but there are also national award programs like the national arts awards national alternative we were talking about that alternative school award the asa administrator awards we got great administrators we should try to nominate somebody every year and the civic engagements awards with the arizona department of ed we thought maybe we could put a tv in each of the front offices and scroll through the positive things that are happening in our schools and district i think we get a lot of parents that come in and if they would see that scrolling message then they would be able to take it out as well as our students they need to be a messenger of spreading the good news as well so we think that would be great we discussed that at the staff meetings and the pd where we have groups together to make sure that we're recognizing what's going on with not only our staff but also including it with the students since they're a part of our community making sure we recognize those also on the new website not just maybe on a monthly basis but throwing up those banners as different events come to light through the district others person we talked a little bit about um partnering with some of the hoas within the neighborhood as well to get our name i know that we're getting stolen by so many people but how can we get out there too and do the same thing of building a partnership with them about who we are and why they should choose us john and i talked about increasing our public awareness banners flyers social media and being very intentional with what we want to share um thinking about some expectations for schools to post and share using the the school electronic board to really get out all that's happening at the school and then we thought about um a regular communication marketing meeting but it could be as part of the leadership meeting where schools are sharing out what's going on so that the community the communications marketing team is aware of that and can make some strategic plans throughout the year okay so i'll collect when you get a chance to have them right now we'll go ahead and collect that uh that information we'll start putting together you'll see where that could show up in the strategic plan relative the goals the the strategy the strategies and the goals or the objectives uh so we'll go ahead and take a look at that so that's kind of a celebration of what's going on now we'll go ahead and give some time to mr berkshire the last day his last presentation uh on student achievement [Applause] all right so this is uh i get the pleasure of one last presentation on our student data here in the district um before i start to do that with my new district so today we'll be going not really about the district assessment plan but more about our state achievement results just a reminder we're looking today at all of our our uh state end of the year and district in the year summative assessments um really what that's useful for is uh the district looking at are we covering the standards with appropriate breadth and depth how are grade levels and content uh performing in regards to the standards do we need to identify resources to provide more curricular support so we're going to start with our ela side literacy side and our screening results related to that so fastbridge early reading is what's administered to kindergarten first grade something to keep in mind with this one is that each administration what is being assessed of students is different and the score that students need to receive changes as well each administration so you can kind of see that kindergarten started out the year with only 30 percent of our kids at uh that benchmark level and then we leveled off between that 48 and 45 percent uh the mid-year end of the year and then our first grade continued to improve over the course of the year cbm reading is administered first second and third grade that is basically um students get three passages that they have to read they have one minute to read that passage and then the teacher is monitoring them for accuracy in terms of that reading again the benchmark level that they have to score in terms of fluency and accuracy does change at each administration so the expectations rise as you go i can say with dibbles which is what this really replaces um in second grade historically every year we saw our second graders go down in terms of that because the accuracy needed in increased dramatically by the end of the year so this doesn't look too much different than what we saw with dibbles correct so uh the beginning of the year there was the first graders aren't reading yet necessarily so they aren't administered cbm uh so the first time they get it is the middle of the year um remember we're expecting third graders to by third grade they should be fluent readers in terms of that oral reading fluency first grade they are still learning to read but these are nationally normed benchmarks so yes that that is a number that is low fast bridge auto reading this is an assessment given to four through um we administered it all the way up to 12th grade but i'll tell you that our 12th grade um participation numbers were not high enough for me to include those uh the data was very inaccurate based on the number of 12th graders that we had participate in it so i only did it up to 11th grade um basically what this is it's a computer-based assessment um looking at automaticity basically in terms of reading so it takes the place of early reading and cbm reading in an elect in a digital format basically so it's looking at how fluent are kids in things like the accuracy and rate of phonological sound orthographic spelling semantic meaning skills so they're things that they're looking at it's timed letter names letter sounds that kind of thing so you can see where how we adjusted over the course of the year these are those fundamental skills that kids should have in order to be able to read marcus i have another question so fourth grade at the beginning of the year they're at 65 right correct but when you went back to third grade at the end of the year they were only at 46.

so what happened over the summer different tests first of all so so this is looking at their oral reading fluency them able to sit down and read a passage and how well can they read that passage how many words can they read in a passage in a minute without making mistakes oh is this comprehension no oh it's just fluency it's just fluency and that's what's recorded to the state for move on when reading um the so as long as you know how to read it but you don't have to continue you don't have to to know anything about it right correct okay that makes sense yeah it's all about speed reading basically without making mistakes the idea is if you can read orally very fluently without making mistakes then you're able to better comprehend what it is that you're reading however the the measures for comprehension after an oral reading fluency assessment are very subjective um it's uh there is a component that we didn't use with fastbridge this year where the last passage that the teacher would ask questions of the student but the teacher is rating the quality of the answer of that student and and so it it really depends yes so generally this is the piece that's considered to be the most accurate uh in terms of is a student a at a point where they should be now reading to learn rather than learning to read do we have any idea if you look back on that last one on eighth grade the the significant drop what took place there where right there when you take a look if you look at seventh grade then you see a drop off on eighth and then you bump back back up at ninth and so was there anything in particular with fastbridge at eighth grade that we saw that jumped out at us uh i don't know how to this is our first year with password so it may be irrelevant because there's not trend data yeah it's hard to say i mean it was a beginning of the year in eighth grade obviously it's a new test um could be that could be a factor students have never taken it before they didn't know um again auto reading is timed so they have like 10 seconds to answer each question as they go through if they're not familiar with it then they may have gotten timed out that kind of thing um but you do see that though those fundamental pieces improve in eighth grade seventh grade goes down though so um we're gonna need more data and the way fastbridge is set up the teacher gets the most useful data i have to dive down to a teacher's level to really see at a classroom level an individual student level to see where those mistakes are happening and what to do about those mistakes that's the reason why we purchased fastbridge was it provided teachers with a lot of information that they could use right then and there to address where students are at the elementary level they are using it for progress monitoring and intervention the middle school i know that they're using it to identify those students for the strategies class and whether students have made progress out of those uh to move out of the strategies class and honestly i couldn't tell you i i know the high school was looking at it they had a conversation with us at the beginning of the year about what it means we brought the team in to discuss that but beyond that i i do not know how they're using this information at the secondary level within the individual classroom level a reading is similar to star it's a basic general reading test it's computer adaptive so students start out at a certain point as they answer questions it will adjust the level as they go through we can get a lexile out of this this is the assessment that our third graders that were are in danger being held back due to the move on when reading law will take at the end of summer school if they score at a high enough national percentile level then we believe that they have what they need to to be promoted up to fourth grade otherwise they'll continue with third grade this is aasa is the new state test so this is how we did versus the state this past spring remember this is third through eighth grade high school is taking a totally different test this year and i'll show you those results in a second [Music] this is how we've done prior years versus the current year aasa is the exact same test that they've been taking it is azmerit it is azm2 the only difference is the platform that students used was test nav versus tied but really for the student experience very little difference on the teacher side a whole lot of difference pan is very frustrating but it doesn't impact student results the items on aasa 100 percent written by arizona that's the biggest difference easy merit was forty percent arizona sixty percent uh air azm2 flipped that to sixty percent forty percent um and now it's a hundred percent but all of these items have been embedded all of the arizona written items have been embedded in azmerit and azm2 for years to test for reliability and validity that was our ncdc year when we hosted in cdc right no that was the year before as we were ramping up for that i couldn't really tell you as we were preparing for ncdc there was a lot more focus on what was happening in the classroom and so i do believe that there was a lot more intentionality in what was happening and uh in terms of teachers being aware of what they were doing and and i think that's a that's a critical issue that we've talked about as a leadership team when we start talking about intentionality and getting in the classroom whether we're doing instructional walks and what it looks like um our intention for next year given the the the impact to cover the last couple years uh trying to keep people off campuses because the cover the number of kids that were out all those kind of things uh was different than it's been so our intention for next year and one of our areas of strategies that we're looking to move forward on is to get in and be more intentional uh and more specific in what we're seeing and what's happening and not happening so that's the strategy that we're working on right now we believe that some of that work shows the potential for hashtag ford unfortunately after ncdc20 they canceled the state testing that year uh because of covid and then there's been the two years of that so we would hope this year we would see some marked differences as we move into the classrooms to work with all teachers on implementing the strategies that are part of hashtag forward so right the other thing to keep in mind is that was the second year of implementation of our new ela curriculum resources so that in combination with your point in terms of staff turnover could very well be uh par both of those contributing factors of that particular process right so go back and look at 18 19 20 21 and see which of those teachers are continuing on and what their individual scores and as marcus alluded to one of the reasons we liked fastbridge is because you can you can drill down and you can find that information it was a little more challenging with galileo but with fastbridge you you can do those things so i won't be here to do that but i think that would be a fascinating piece and look and i can tell you as someone who's used data like this those are the things we should be doing we should be drilling down and identifying the teachers who are continuing and what's the pattern do we have new teachers that have come in that are be outperforming our current teachers and if so why if not why those are the questions that we need to be asking those new teachers the tools that they need so that our kids are performing that year not waiting for them to become proficient in three years right we definitely tried to provide a scaffolded approach for our new teachers coming in we offer summer classes summer camp before they get here which offers them an opportunity to kind of dig into their resources and materials and we start introducing our foundations of forward during that time and then during new teacher orientation we also bring them a little further into forward we also start helping them develop relationships with one another and get to know the people at the district and at the site levels so that they know their resources so they can reach out for support and then we launch into the district pl days where we take that learning a little bit further for them and we have different pathways for our teachers that are entering to the district versus teachers that have been in the district so everybody gets new learning and it's personalized so we do our best to help those struggles or they'll start those structures in addition to that when the school year starts our coach team actually we meet once a week to talk about our teachers and where they are and what supports they need by what they're saying and what we're seeing and then we try to meet with them as a team or individually to help them in addition to that we also have our mentors that are meeting with our new teachers as well to help them with any of those stressors or any of the resources or systems that we have in the district so we're trying to put a comprehensive symptom system together to help them out i bet you we had the same amount i mean we we i know we have a high turnover because they come here they get their get get their right they get something under their feet and then they hop so i mean i get it i mean i'm but bet you did we didn't have we had the same amount in 2019 as we had in 2021.

as far as turnover or new teachers no okay right yes it is they're aligned with best practice and what every teacher needs to be doing in their building not you know so the plc questions the guiding questions should be asked by every single team digging deep into the data so i think there's some systems pieces that we're working on that will help um despite who comes into our district or doesn't come into our district but what do they need to do and what tools do they need to have so they can start addressing it if they're a new teacher or returning teacher or a teacher that has been here for a while with great success and we're seeing some difficulties i think it can't be at the end of the year autopsy which is what we're doing it's got to be an ongoing analysis of what's happening within our our classrooms and i also think it's critical that people understand that this is why any i mean so we're looking at a data like this but there's multiple things that are taking place and so when we talk about moving our starting salary up to fifty thousand seventy dollars that's in part to some of this conversation because the longer you hold on to people the more you get them trained the better off you get with results so when we talk about what does a starting salary look like in the district that's irrelevant in some ways the conversation of what takes place in the classroom in terms of getting test scores but it's not and so people need to understand when we talk about working on different aspects most people won't look necessarily at hr type thing and what salaries are but that's another component so we're trying to move on several different layers uh to go ahead and address the issue um because it becomes critical for us to to to look at everything in terms of trying to get results so that that movement to 50 000 starting salary is i think going to be crucial to try and save some people that will stay with us longer and shelly i i wanted to um just kind of respond to something i have all of the um arizona auditor general reports with me for the last five or six years that's a normal thing to do and um the percent of teachers in the first three years in fiscal year 2018 was 35 so more than one-third of our teachers were in the first three years in fiscal year 2019 it dropped to 22 percent and fiscal year 2020 it dropped to 18 so we've been getting more teachers staying longer with us uh the average uh number of years of experience back in 2018 was eight and a half in 2019 was 10 and a half and in 2020 was 10.8 so we're getting more experienced teachers staying longer over the last few years and we'll get into the ag report here in a little bit but you'll see that trend continuing you'll see that you'll see that trend continuing so it it speaks to things that are changing now we have to put them all together to get the results that we want so go ahead marcus here's our cohort performance um so since 2017 because that's the group that that group that i have five years worth of data remember for eighth grade actually never mind that's for math uh so you can see our eighth graders this year took azmerit in 2017.

40 of them were passing at that point in time we're now down to 25 passing by eighth grade but on this so everybody sees understand there's a gap here because there's no 2020 there because the test didn't occur so this is reflective of cova data over here but there's a gap year that's not reflected on this because we don't have any 2020 data um it's it is what it is relative to covid uh but we're not the only ones across the country that are seeing some differences in terms of what test scores uh are aligned with that uh not excuse but a reality of what we're dealing with so please keep in mind when you look at uh at the cohort data good news was our third graders who did not do very well at all last year significant improvement from third grade to fourth grade and then the last ela piece of data i'm going to show you for the for the uh third through eighth grade is our district benchmark performance versus asa and i've been saying all along i believed our cut scores were high uh for on our district benchmarks [Music] and they were but i will say i've done a correlation and analysis and if a kid did well on our benchmark they did well on aasa it's pretty much a very solid straight diagonal line for third through sixth grade seventh and eighth grade as usual as they get older gets a little bit wonkier uh in terms of that correlation but generally if kids are doing well on our benchmarks they're going to do well on aasa which goes back to the early statement talking about if we are monitoring where students are from the get-go from the beginning of the year and we're looking at where they are where those mistakes are being made what talking about that student data from the get-go then it doesn't become an autopsy at the end of the year it becomes what do we need to change as we're going as the train is running down the track in order to make sure that kids are ready when they get to the test so using that data in their plc conversations and talking about those strong instructional strategies that can be used to to identify and adjust along the way district benchmark growth in ela so using our benchmark there is a growth tool in there so we can look at beginning of the year to the end of the year we administered this the beginning first four five weeks of school and then the end of the year was right after asa testing was done that bottom red it doesn't translate as well here as it did on my computer screen that bottom group of bars those are students that did worse on our end of the year test than they did at the beginning of the year third grade was where we had our most success on ela in aasa and this is illuminate also allows us to look at this from a teacher standpoint as well so we can drill down to teachers and look at which teachers were having more success with students from the beginning of the year to the end of the year moving to math this is our fast bridge early math remember when we introduced fastbridge at the beginning of the year we focused on the literacy side to begin the year and then administered the math um screeners so kids didn't take the screeners until outside of the normal four week window it was closer to the week eight through nine uh or actually six through nine that they were getting the fast bridge screeners which means that our beginning of the year data is going to be skewed because they had more instruction than what the the screener is expecting them to have so the cut score should have been adjusted but because the way it's it's constructed it wasn't um so middle of the year end of the year is going to be much more accurate because those were done within the actual screening window that's expected by the instrument early math is those early math skills um that students have for can and it's administered kindergarten in first grade it's a one-on-one assessment again just like early reading the assessment tools change over the course of the year because what we're asking of kindergarteners and first graders change dramatically over the course of a year cbm math this is different than the cbm reading in that it's a computer-based assessment it's not kids getting a worksheet full of math problems and how fast can they do it in a certain amount of time it's similar to the auto reading which is so it's computer-based they are timed it's looking at those basic foundational math skills and that automaticity in terms of can they solve problems addition subtraction multiplication division in a timed kind of environment a math is that general math assessment of math skills so again this one very dramatically i would say don't look at the beginning of the year because it's not as accurate but next year we will be administering it during the appropriate window and we'll have beginning of the year to the end of the year data that's much more accurate here's how we did on aasa math state versus the district one of the things i will say um is that there are districts around the state that have voluntarily shared their data with each other um we are comparable to mesa in terms of our performance on aasa some of our higher more wealthy demographic districts that around us around us that have shared data did much better than we did but they have historically also done much better than we did um i can tell you honestly the district that i'm going to is not happy about their data here's how we did on math compared to previous years celebration in eighth grade highest passing percentage we've had in many years also keep in mind though eighth grade in uh 17 or 15 16 17 18 and 19 students were taking an end of course assessment so our eighth grade algebra kids aren't necessarily reflected in these numbers so that's a little caveat there but you can see 21 and 22 that was all 8th graders taking the 8th grade assessment the other thing we will start to take a look at so that everybody keeps keeps in mind when we get down to the teacher level you have several schools and several grade levels where where our ability to fill with teachers becomes problematic and so long term subs uh or people leaving mid-year or having multiple teachers uh in a class start to come back and impact us this is not something that's going to go away given the the the shortage of staff and the pipeline issues we're working hard to get them filled but i think we also have to be uh recognition there should be a recognition of the fact that this is an issue that maybe the stability that people have had in previous years uh even if we may only keep teachers for five years or something like that depending on where they're at if you lose some teachers mid-year and they're replacing with long-term subs or alternative certified people that it can make a difference and if you have multiple teachers in the same classroom for the same reason it's an issue so we have to keep that in mind too here's our math cohort data again keep in mind 17 18 19 those were all eighth grade um where students were taking algebra as well these looked different because on the previous graph it was just the eighth grade assessment that was included here i've been able to include both the algebra students as well that passed the algebra test and then again here's how we did on our benchmark versus aasa again in the math strong correlation between students doing well on our benchmarks and students doing well on aasa marcus i know we've talked a little bit but what's the recommendation coming out of cia relative to the benchmark level for next year keep it the same or modify it or what what what's the i know tim and those guys are coming on board they're gonna have to get up to speed but i know we've had a conversation about that i didn't make a recommendation on a change i did make a recommendation that if a change happened the my recommended cut scores so proficient would be i want to say 65 percent rather than uh actually highly proficient would be 65.

proficient would be i want to say 55 um but i can't i honestly that was a few weeks ago and i have a lot has happened since then um but i handed that all out to dr fountain so he's got it and that'll be decision for another group of people right but for the board as a reminder as we have this conversation then because when when we do reporting out throughout the year and you have our proficiency levels high and then you see result levels that are down like this there's questions raised both from the public and from the board about what's the end result of what we're having but then at the end of the year irrespective of whether we should be at a different place or not you're starting to see this kind of gap issue that's suggesting that we're moving at least staying on path for where we've been in the past even though the data in the middle of the school year may suggest otherwise because of these of this proficiency issue and so it's something that that it's okay to keep it this way or to make an adjustment but people have to be at least understanding of what this means and i know mark has talked about it in most of the presentations i don't know especially if you have people online that they understand this issue of what's taking place we'll have trend data that we can start to use in future years against this but if the decision is to to adjust those numbers then we just have to keep that in mind that that that plays around with uh what's going on because fastbridge was brand new and illuminate was brand new this year we were purposely trying to figure out where we sat on some of these issues and so the adjustments may come come forward but just keep that in mind as we take a look because you may see increases at this piece that are not commensurate with the increase you see here from us versus the state testing but it may have an issue on where your cut score is as much as anything else it may be greater here and lesser here as we move forward it may be greater here but you just need to keep that in mind as we make those decisions that as we go into conversation in the middle of the year about scores oh yeah this is what we did this is why we did it and so we'll come forward with what what our recommendations are that was something we lost with galileo galileo gave us a scale score um and so you didn't look at a raw score you looked at the scale score and and so kids could score 25 on a test but when looked at a normative rating that's actually passing um and so that's what's hard about illuminate that's the reason why i've been emphasizing when we talk about our dna benchmarks students that did well even if they relative to their peers in the district did better on aasa so if i've if my highest score in my grade level was a 30 that kid more than likely probably passed aasa and if i've got a large number of kids that scored a five percent and they're at that bottom quartile then they're in danger of not passing that state test so if i'm looking at that data from the very very beginning of the year reevaluating those individual students at the middle of the year and having those strong conversations in those plcs and at the site level that's where the power of the assessment comes in so again we can look at our district benchmark growth from the beginning of the year to the end of the year again that bottom block our students that made negative growth they did worse on the end of the year benchmark than they did at the beginning of the year now we're moving into secondary so this year uh ninth graders took act aspire and 11th graders took the act challenge here is this year uh we don't have cut scores for proficiency yet so act aspire will be used to determine growth for the 11th grade act test so this is a baseline year with act aspire there will be a committee meeting uh the first week in july to look at the act results and determine what this the cut score will be and then there's another meeting at the end of july to look at both az psi act aspire and act to determine so to really look at that data and how it impacts a through f um so what you're going to see here is basically a scale score on a c t aspire how we did versus the state for a through f what will be used will be math and then a score called ela which is a combination of english reading and writing you don't have an ela score up here right now because act aspire for whatever reason in the thought data file that i get doesn't provide an ela score yet i'm hoping to find that out in july when i go to the committee to to look at the cut scores um they also have a writing score though i don't include writing because historically writing hasn't been taken as part of the a.c.t it's required by us as a state to do the writing which is why sat was not one of the menu of assessments because act said we're done with writing we're not going to do it anymore acc said we will continue to do writing and so writing is involved here english we did a little bit better than the state average um on a scale score and this is an average scale score it's not a percent proficient reading actually no i take that back act this is act readiness so what this is telling you sorry i'm learning this test for the first time as well um so what a ct aspire readiness is telling us is this percentage of kids will perform at or above that college readiness score on the act so looking at this number 52 percent of our kids in ninth grade right now are showing that they will perform at or above the college readiness level on the english act subsection of the test versus a state at 48.
