Stacy regularly updates the clock. So I'm pretty confident that that clock is early. >> No, it's not. >> Sometimes it's 60 seconds off or so. Did you hear a little bit of a ring? >> Um, a little bit of a hum. >> Yep. We were charged in the sink. It was being used all day. I will now call to order the May 19th, 2026 schoolboard meeting. Stand commando school district board of directors position tradition our student representatives Alexa Patrick will conduct the remainder for tonight's meeting board director's present honor is Steve King Charlotte Murray Mike Olson and John director Evans is absent and excuse student representatives Alexa and Patrick Rogers Today we are offering two opportunities for the public to speak. The board has had the opportunity to review the May 5th, 2026 regard board meeting minutes. Is there a motion to approve the minutes for the May 5th, 2026 regard board meeting? >> So moved. >> Second. >> Um it has been moved by Director Russell and seconded by Director Wilson to approve the minutes for the May 5th 226 regular board meeting. All those in favor say I. I >> oppose. The minutes have been approved. The board has had the opportunity to review the May 11th, 2026 special board meeting executive session minutes. Is there a motion to approve the minutes for the May 11th,
0042026 special board meeting? >> I move to second. >> That's been moved by Director Russell and seconded by Director Olson to approve the amend for the May 11th, 2026 special meeting. All those in favor say I. >> Any oppose? Have been approved. Can I please note for the recordion absence? >> Okay. And now for this, it is time for the superintendent. The report presented by superintendent. >> Thank you very much. Nice intro to the meeting so far. Thank you uh to both of you. There's five items on the superintendent report uh this evening and we're going to start with donations which will be read in by Patrick and Alexa. The Sanwood Community School District received the following donations. $100 flat from the war family in support of the Sandwood High School port horticulture club. >>
$200 from the Arlington Garden Club in $200 from the Arlington Garden Club in support of the FFA program at S High School. >> $300.50 from the Cedar Home Elementary PTO to cover the transportation cost for the Cedar Home Elementary School field trip to Woods Creek Sustainability Center. $2445 from the Twin City Elementary PTA to cover the transportation costs for the Twin City Elementary School field trip to the Woods Creek Sustainability Center. >> A donation of painting supplies and material in support of the Swood High School art department valued at $250. >> $639.50 from the Stanwood Elementary PTO to cover the transportation cost for the Stanwood Elementary School field trips to the Stanwood wastewater treatment plant. Thank you to both of you and thank you to our community members who donated. I'll note that uh those
donations are spread across four different schools. So across our district um the support for um activities beyond the classroom and in the classroom are taking place. We appreciate that. Next up on the superintendent report item number two is a shining star recognition which is going to be presented by principal Stacy Langer uh for the Stanwood Elementary Shining Star. All right. Um, I actually have a group of teachers here that are going to maybe present with me. You want to come up? Maybe you want to staff members. Stand with elementary. So, we are uh tonight recognizing a don't quite know how to stand. I want to stand this way because his family's out here. Sorry. Uh, we are recognizing a fifth grader tonight from Stanwood Elementary. His name is Russell Shelon. If you want to come
on up, Russell. >> Oh, all right. Uh, you want to stand right over here? So tonight I'm going to read so people can see it. Okay. Tonight I'm going to read something that was put together by several of the staff members as you can see here have all been touched by Russell. And uh it's a kind of a compilation of what he's achieved since he's been at Stamwood Elementary. And I was telling some of my colleagues today, you know, you chose the right kid for shining star when the day we brought him into the office and told him that he was nominated, we were going to recognize him tonight. He sat down at the table in my desk and started writing out invitations to pass around the school to all the staff members. So like
we chose the right one. So uh Russell, uh we're looking back at your kindergarten year when Russell first started school with us. He was incredibly quiet. He uh would shy away from interactions. He rarely talked in class. As his kindergarten teacher noticed though that once he found something he really loved, he would just stick with it. His favorite thing was adding numbers on the whiteboard. Right? Remember that? >> Uh by first grade, his uh teacher stated he had become a very curious learner. His excitement for school was contagious, making the whole classroom a more enjoyable place. And I would say that's true to this day. As Russell began moving into the upper grade, social interactions became quite difficult for him. Uh he once again he preferred working independently. He was all he was often working
one-on-one with his teacher. That was where he found comfort. That year though, he found a lot of comfort in hiding in the classroom tent. Spent a significant amount of time hiding in the classroom tent. However, by the end of the school year, he began broadening his horizons. He began taking risks, trying things that once felt impossible. The last day of third grade, his teacher recalls feeling quite emotional walking under the bus because it felt like he was just beginning to take off. Fourth grade came and with it Russell's brutal honesty. Uh he's one of the most genuine, honest people I know. uh on the first day of class, he walked in and told his teachers he did not want to be in their class. Uh we found out later it was because it was inappable,
but the benefit of that year, he was in a split classroom and part of the day was spent in smaller uh class sizes and uh he really started to take off that year. He was at the beginning of the year he was doing very minimal work. Uh by February though he was uh make he is his teacher said he made an unbelievable social transformation. He went from being a student that did not want to talk to being the student the teacher had to ask to stop talking during instruction. They would had to remind him to breathe when he got caught in a massive laughing fit. Uh he started asking to work with partners. He was making friends and he was doubling his workload. Now in fifth grade, Russell is a whole new student. He tackles
challenging material with perseverance. He's become his own best advocate. He actively participates in classroom discussions and openly partners with his peers. But if you ask anyone at Stamwood Elementary what they love most about Russell today, it's the wonderful personality that has emerged. He is famous for his dead pan ma matterof fact delivery, his mischievous grins, and his hilarious sharp-witted comments that catch you completely off guard. His counselor's favorite part of the day is hanging out with Russell at recess clubs where Russell flashes that mischievous friend teams up against her and uh randomly throwing out roast while trying to beat her at board games. Right. >> Yeah. Uh Russell uh you have come so far. You've shown us what it means to grow in strength, character, and confidence. You brought so much joy and laughter and
light to the halls of Stamford Elementary. We're so incredibly proud of you and glad to be part of your story. We'll miss you, but we know the middle school is lucky to get you. We cannot wait to see the bright path you pave for yourself. And I would say he is one of the probably one of the more most genuine people I know. If Russell's happy, the whole school knows he's happy. And if he thinks something needs to change at school, he's the first person to tell you it needs to change and is usually right. But the thing I would say is he's not hiding in tense anymore. He's up in front of the classroom. He's leading presentations. He's asking for feedback. He's asking for questions. And you can tell that he feels proud when
he's doing it. So, it's very, very welld deserved. CONGRATULATIONS. >> Is there family that you want to introduce that's here tonight? >> Family that you want to tell who came tonight? You want to come up? >> You want to introduce him? >> Who's this? >> Somebody. >> Your brother. >> His little brother. Oh, the other brother. >> Yeah. >> You already my mom. >> And >> who is it? >> Papa. >> Okay. And who was over there? Well, there's two more. One's technically not family, but she didn't stand. >> Oh, yeah. And this is >> congratulations. >> Fantastic. We're going to do a picture over here, Russell, with you. And we have a couple things for you. Okay. Come on over. Russell, before we take a picture, you get to put the star, your star
anywhere you want. Very nice. >> Congratulations. >> All right, we're going to do a picture with a bunch of us. >> You stay right there. >> Can I put this away? >> All right. Thank you. >> Perfect. All right. >> All right. >> Perfect. >> All right. Congratulations. >> Yep. No. We're gonna get some staff in the mail. >> Okay. >> You'll be good. in the back. >> All right, everyone squeeze in. >> Perfect. All right, one, two, perfect. I think we sometimes uh forget to release the family. So, if you want to >> Thanks, Director Russell. Yeah. Uh yes, family, if you want to uh if you want to go home for dinner now and do uh celebrate in a different way than hearing our board report, uh you're welcome to do that. We'll
pause for a minute. Uh and staff, if you'd like to do that, congratulations once again, Russell. >> My brother's Next up on the superintendence report is the district strategic plan refresh. and uh director of communications Evan Caldwell and director of teaching and learning Dr. Colin Ryan are going to present the first half of this and I will um come in on the the end and have an opportunity to really um have this board ask questions about our plan for refreshing the strategic plan as well as um presenting it to the community. >> Yeah. Well, thanks for having me. And I'm just now realizing that several of the students in these photos up here were celebrated the celebration of excellence last night. >> So, that's wonderful. >> Um, so you plan refresh time. There we go.
Um, we have several different goals as part of our plan. Some of you guys might be familiar with this one. um our city plan which runs through 2027, so the end of next school year, which is why we're starting to talk about the process to go through a refresh here. Uh this being uh the goal that we're going to be celebrating over the next couple of weeks here. Um so every March we do our community survey. It gives us really good data for lots of different things. Uh this time we're going to use some of that data to help position us to start the strategic plan refresh process. So we get to kind of see what the community likes about the plan, what they didn't like, where there's growth opportunities, uh potential changes, and uh
it'll help kind of inform how we structure the process over the next 12 months as we work through. So among the results from this student uh this uh survey this year uh is our over overall satisfaction continues to grow. So we ask our respondents to rate the district's uh performance and it's uh very dissatisfied, somewhat dissatisfied, somewhat satisfied, very satisfied. So we lump the two satisfied together. This is the result of the last four years which gives us good data to show that the plan seems to be working and well received. So uh the goal is the refresh rather than a complete kind of rebuild of a brand new plan. So, if you dive into these numbers a little bit further um and break down some of those results, you can kind of see uh
a trend developing that the closer people are to the schools, the higher the rate of satisfaction. So, these two different categories are broken down by age and the bottom two ones are people who responded that have students in our system and that don't have students in the system. Um, I will note that even the low ones are above 50%. So, we're doing pretty good. Go to the next slide. Um, every year we ask people kind of what they currently use to receive information about us and what their preferred methods are, and they usually match pretty closely. The biggest change this year, we noticed that trends start to happen last year, is via text. So, if we're looking at ways to interact with as many people as possible as part of this strategic plan refresh, we're
going to probably adapt and use texting more than we currently do. So that'll be a change over the next uh school year where uh newsletters and other information will have via text where currently that is reserved for um like emergency safety information, bus delays, uh weather delays, that type of thing. So knowing all of that, we're using that information to kind of develop our plan moving forward as we are going to kind of structure a strategic plan refresh. and and um you may have heard before, especially I know a few of you were at the academic advisory team meeting this past uh this past week um that the academic advisory team is is a solid structure to be able to do the following things that you see on the screen in front of you. To
be able to gather community voice that's going to be paired with the survey results that we've pulled in already to be able to ask some of the planning questions that that come up in those academic advisory meetings. um use those questions to refine the priorities that um need to be refined within the strategic plan and then what measurable action will be tied to those refi refined priorities um that can be measured on the next five years of the plan. So if the the next slide will show you that the academic advisory team um if you we use acronyms of AAC um will be the central structure for this for 2627 and we're going to show a timeline here in just a moment but but um really it allows us to use an existing leadership structure
that's already recognized by the board um in one of our three recognized committees to guide the process. Um we'll be able to use multi multiple data sources that will be reviewed. Um the academic advisory team this year or committee this year um was able to visit uh three different levels of schools and draw data from those those different levels. They they looked exclus extensively at at the data points. They'll be able to develop focused questions at what should be preserved, what should be improved, what should be changed, and then what can we prune or remove from the existing plan uh as it is right now. And then the final outcome will include some goals. One of the things that we've discussed is uh our current plan has goals, but they're more um quantitative metrics. So
then uh excuse me, they're more qualitative metrics than quantitative metrics. So um do we need some actual um data as measured by numbers to to pair our uh goals against? So that will provide a road map for the future the timeline and um we can adjust this because we're far enough out if we as we've started right now to gather data from the uh survey like Evan just talked about. Um, and we'll continue to do that through the summer as we get our summitive SBA data, some classroombased assessments that we'll use uh in and we'll start to to pull those together in October in early fall. Um, we'll look at early learning uh and review that portion of our existing strategic plan. Uh, in December, November, December, we'll focus on engagement, growth, and achievement. That's
you might remember the middle part of our um current strategic plan. And then uh in January or after the first of the year, focus on the last what we've called the goalposts and the future ready graduates. We'll have more survey results to come in from the March survey. The academic advisory team will draft plans and then our structure would be that the academic advisory team members of the community would actually make a recommendation to this board regarding the refresh uh and the refresh process. So on the next slide you'll see what can you as a board expect along the way um with this clear updates on what feedback and data are showing. So this will be nearly a year worth of um data and survey data, assessment data, school-based assessment data. So what the data
are showing. Um next discussions of what current goals should be preserved or refined or even pruned out. Uh third a draft of success measures like I just talked about connected to the district pronouns. Um also a focus set of strategic priorities for the next four years. Are those strategic priorities the same or different than they are right now? And then lastly, and you you see that this is in a different color because I'm excited for this for that um committee made up of representatives of our community to make a a plan recommendation for the road map in May of of 27. Um Dr. Ryan is here because he leads that uh academic advisory committee and has has um kind of worked to position that committee to be well tuned to do this work. um hoping
to grow that community from anyone in the audience to tonight or online um to be become part of that important work moving forward. So with that, are there any questions about the plan as presented or moving into next year? >> Um from being at the academic advisory committee last week, I noticed that none of the recommendations that came from the academic advisory committee about this are included in this presentation. So there were some changes to the timeline and that kind of thing. So are you going to be taking those into account and updating that at a future date? >> Sure. This will be iterative and I think the academic advisory was Thursday of last week. So uh already posted but yes we'll we want it to be very iterative as we need if we need
you know to come together more often or back up the dates um that that the committee recommended. Absolutely. that'll be part of the process. Thanks for raising that. >> I think you mentioned it um in the in the basically what's important to me is those touch points with the community and the academic advisory is is certainly one of those touch points. Do we have some other identified touch points with the community as as part of this process? >> Go ahead and talk about that. >> Yeah, so I'll take you back to 2022 when we we started this. There were more than a thousand people that interacted with the planning process and that's not a thousand people in a room with all raising their hands of opinion. It was a mix of a whole bunch of
stuff. So I mean it was from survey results to us going out and holding town halls to the committee that was doing a lot of the heavy lifting work kind of uh distilling some of that information and kind of pushing the ball forward. So it it's several different layers because we know that everyone can't devote you know uh a night a month to come into a meeting but they can devote 10 minutes to take out a survey and everyone in between. So yes there'll be lots of different uh layers that people can get involved. >> The other thing that I'm I'm that we will elevate next time is the student voice with in relation to the strategic plan. the student superintendent leadership team uh is an avenue which I intend to use to to put
this existing document in front the feedback that's coming in from the AAC and measure it against uh the experiences they're having and the goals that they would like to see for the district as well. So that that SSLT superintendent student leadership team will be the um one of the touch points for student voice. I think the other thing too um and I can't I don't want to speak for my other board members but I think that we also as a board accept the challenge to to do the work that we need to do to to take us through and that's that's one of the things that I think we we started that process when we've had a couple of our work sessions and I think we are excited to to do that process. >> I
appreciate that. >> Any other questions? we can expect that this will be a um a not every meeting but a regular agenda item to update uh to update the board on the progress of of the strategic plan refresh. So and the feedback coming from uh structures like AEC. Okay. Thank you. Next up on the superintendent report is the May enrollment report. You can see that in front of you on the screen and uh was attached in the agenda. The ad the annual average FTE um right now is 4,629. So that's off about 36 from budgeted enrollment and down 25 from May of last of last year. We're down 12 from April in the the month of May enrollment report. um which is a larger decline than actually the last four years. Um we are you
know we expect some fall off because of uh the end of the year particularly in high school but this is a trend in which I think gives credence to our um approach to the the projected enrollment at the start of next year. >> How is how does this um I know we have a tendency to be a little bit conservative on our numbers. How how does this look in our forecast for next year? How does how does coming in under at this stage look for next year's? Right. So, we're off 36 from budget from September um and down 25 from this year uh this time last year. So, more than expected. We we project um our enrollment to be 97 fewer uh students in the October count um than we have um this year. And
so I think we are planning conservatively once again. But as I read these enrollment reports month after month, I'm um the the cautious nature of the projection I think is uh warranted. Thanks. >> One question. You mentioned that you lost 20 students last month until this month, which was unusual. >> Uh 12 uh from April, 25 from this time last year. >> Last year this year, are we looking at the exit codes in the city to see where those students are going? >> Yes. I don't have those broke out, but our uh data analyst provides those uh monthly to see are they um you know U3, which would be coded as a a student who's dropped out. Um are they transferring out of district? Are they going to you know uh a homeschool program in
the area? What's the what's the case? So, we do track track that. And um when I last analyzed it, um we looked at those codes, but also the schools and grades they were coming from. And it was it was spread pretty evenly across grades and codes. >> No identifiable trends, >> right? We can't target a trend like um our our AL, you know, our AL is um has a student exit, you know, more students exiting than others. So, >> thank you. >> Any other questions? Okay. Um, to be honest, next to the shining star, I've been looking forward to to this opportunity right now, and that's to uh recognize uh two of our student representatives that are leading the meeting um very well, I'll say, uh tonight, and uh have represented um their respective student
bodies, but really the students across the district um in a way that elevates and has elevated their student voice. And that is the reason that you're you you sit here is to um bring perspective to myself um the community and this board about what students really need and really want um um in school each day. And so I'm excited to give um some recognition to Alexa and Patrick both as um students who are going to this is our last meeting tonight. um their relatives and family are here to to celebrate them and um for me I just um you know we we made a few moves early on we moved you to the center of the dis which I think is is appropriate because you are the center of the reason that we're in you
know we're here in the district um each day and I think that that's not only symbolic but it you served it well you added student voice I can remember specifically a couple of times when you leaned in both of you to give perspective perspective that that we as adults might not have thought about um even during the the study sessions. So, I just appreciate that. I appreciate the commitment. I also appreciate um just at 5:30 um we met in my office along with Macy and Audrey who are in the in the chairs out there tonight and will be our student reps uh next year to just give some mentorship and you already agreed to do that for the rest of this year and uh into next um for Alexa. So, um, we definitely want to
give you a recognition. We're definitely going to do a picture and we have some things we're going to hang on the fridge and bring, uh, with you. So, I don't know if you wouldn't mind and the board wouldn't mind to to join in front so we can get a picture and an opportunity for you to add if you'd like. >> Front and center. Yeah. >> Do you want to stop by the logo or >> that would be great or okay? >> Evan. >> So, we are presenting Alexa with this certificate for however you want to hang it on the fridge. Uh and this which reads Alexa student advisor 2526. Thank you very much. And uh a card and Evan is this work? >> I hear you. >> Okay. And then Patrick once again same thing.
Um just appreciate your the voice you give hard. And uh paperweight Patrick Rogers student advisor 2526. Thank you uh very much. So, I just want to once again say out loud, I'm very appreciative of the the work these two have done to represent the whole district student population, and I'd like to make sure we recognize that right now. SO, little closer. Perfect. >> We're not at the DIS, but I don't know if there's anything that needs to be added like to add. >> Um, I was like to say that I have genuinely valued all of the comments that you guys have made and discussions we've had and I wish you guys s >> I appreciate um mostly the fact that you guys have really elevated student voice this year, which is something that I've been
kind of trying to get um students to be more involved in. So, I really appreciate you guys. >> I think we've had more reports than we did before schools. >> Well, I know the board's put together more you can you can rifle through later on. So, those are there for you. And uh one more round of applause. Get back to work. And that ends the superintendent's report. >> Thank you, Superintendent Obel. It is now time for the consent agenda. Board members, are there any items on the consent agenda that you would like to pull and discuss? >> No. >> At this time, anyone in the audience may speak to an item specific to the consent agenda. Is there anyone in the attendance who would like to speak? Is there a motion to approve consent agenda
items 1 through 4? >> Motion to approve. >> Second. >> It has been moved by Director Murray and seconded by Director Olsson. All those opposed Wait. Yeah. All those opposed say no. The consent agenda has been approved. The board recognizes the value of public comment on educational issues and the importance of involving members of the public in its meetings. This time is set aside for members of the public to address the board on any topic within the scope of the board's responsibility. The board does not respond to questions or comments during this public comment period and the board silence does not signal agreement or endorsement of the speaker's comments. >> Tonight we have one um citizen to comment. That's Al Striber. I'll go ahead and say, although I think you're aware, uh, um, please step
up the pony. Once you've done, state your name for the record. You'll have 3 minutes for a comment and there's a timer on the screen. And, uh, when there's one minute left, it'll turn yellow and the red light means time is up. Mr. Shriber, >> thank you. Distinguished student representatives, I've had the pleasure of working with you last year. Thank you for your service and best wishes in your future. Superintendent Ovenel, President King, board directors, my name is Al Shriber. I live in the district and this morning I attended a meeting on human trafficking and your sex trafficking in our local area because international borders, the ports, agricultural labor demands, and major transportation routes contribute to trafficking risk for our children as young as 13 and 14. We cannot think that our beautiful community is
immune to the problem. The threat is particularly in urban quarters and transportation hubs like Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, and along the I-5 corridor. We all need to let our elected state officials and bureaucrats know that they need to do more than just continue to raise our taxes and do more to protect our vulnerable children. Thank God Hicks is running for state representative. Our local police and sheriff departments are great, but they're underst staffed. They don't have the resources they need. We can't depend on just ICE and the federal government. We need to act locally, too. We all need to get involved and work on awareness and partnering with the local resources to help the situation. Locally, we have shared hope.org started by former Congresswoman Linda Smith from Vancouver, Washington, Mary'sville, um set freemovement.org to combat slavery,
and hope unlimited. And I'll plug their Hope Golf Classic on Friday, June 26th out at Camelot, hopel.org. And they also provide chaplain who respond to law enforcement, firefighters, and EMTs under the title Northwest Incident Support. So, I would encourage you if you care about our kids to get involved and for our school district who does a wonderful job in promoting safety forums to help with awareness. That's what we need most right now is awareness. Thank you. >> Thank you. I'm going to raise a point of order regarding the uh consent agenda. We um were able to call for those opposed to the vote on the consent agenda, but we did not call for a um those in favor of the items on the consent agenda. So, I'll go ahead and um call for that right
now. and um give another opportunity because of that for those in the audience to um for those in the audience to make comment on the consent agenda. Before I do that, seeing none, all those in favor of approving consent agenda items 1 through 4 signify by saying I. >> I. And all those opposed that consent agenda items one through four pass unanimously. Thank you. >> Okay. Um we do not have any items listed for schoolboard discussion. So we will now move on to student representative reports on school business. Okay. Um this week we are wrapping up SBA testing with the science tests as well as makeups for students who have missed any tests. This year we are seeing improvement in student participation in the tests as well as initial score performance. Last week we wrapped
up our advisory project of creating of an interactive mural for the you are not alone event. I had the honor of attending on Saturday and it was a very enjoyable and constructive experience. Representatives from numerous mental health resources were present and very and were very friendly and gorgeous towards students and other guests. We're also keen with speakers, food and live music for local bands. Last week we had our accredititation presentation in Tartwater. Great news, we continue to be a accredited school. Our student interviews ensure that student voice remains the paramount focus of the session. Our spring social, our spring social, a free event for all LHS students and our SHS guests, will be held on Friday, May 22nd. We are going to have barbecue burgers and hot dogs, other snacks, music, and games. We're all
looking forward to this staple tradition that hails the closure of the school year. And finally, I would like to acknowledge that this is my final session with this board and state my immense gratitude for the opportunity to represent Lincoln Hill High School that I have received. It's been nothing shy but great honor to have my voice and through my voice the voices of my cohorts not only heard but prioritized. I learned a lot from this experience and I'm unlikely to forget it. So, thank you Ryan. Um, thank you very much Patrick. I think we have a point of order. I think we may have jumped the agenda slightly. >> Yes, thanks thanks for that director Russell. I'd like to loop back to topic scheduled for board discussion after Alexa's report if that's all right. >>
I think that's a perfect segway. Thank you, major. >> Okay, as for Sarah High School, tomorrow is our elementary camp, which is just our ASB class and our leadership students, and that will take place in the north and south gyms. We are planning our end of the year assembly, and that will occur the same week that the seniors plan on leaving. And then like two weeks ago or a week and a half ago, we had a student senate. up. However, it was like not super successful because we had a lot of testing going on and we weren't able to make an announcement. And then we have graduation which is June 5th. And I'm excited to see all the seniors move on and I know they all do great things. As for school environment, our staff
has worked hard on making sure everyone has their testing finished and everyone is on the right track. Prom was also very successful and I am eager for school to be over as well. It is hard to show up still, but it's good to see that everyone is still showing up and finishing strong. As for ASB, we have finalized the budget and concluded everything regarding expenses expenses. We had our new executive board with us during this last budgeting meeting, and I'm happy to say they all look promising, and I'm excited to see what they do. To end my report, I wish I had more to say with you, but as school year begins to end, so does the work. I want to thank the school board for everything they have done this year and for always
being supportive. I have enjoyed working with everybody here and so honored I was able to be in this position. Thank you. >> Great reports both of you and I think your closing statements actually are a good capstone to to your time on this board and and reflective of what you've done as well um to represent here. So I'm going to loop back up to topics scheduled for school board discussion and those are in front of you on the agenda and I'll ask you to reference uh those. The first topic scheduled for board discussion is the first reading uh to retire board policy 6512 infection control programs. Is there any discussion on retiring that um policy? >> No. >> Okay. Consensus to move it on. Thank you. Uh the second item is the first reading of
board policy 50004 infection control programs. Is there any conversation or discussion about that? >> Happy to provide context. Okay. >> Well, I guess I think we've had this discussion before but it might not hurt for the for the public. A lot of this is advisory where we change words from shall to will. Do we have a do we have a little bit of a background on that's just a legal ease? >> Yes. Mrs. still pose. Would you mind to >> provide a little bit of too >> all the years that I've been in Christine's position observing board meetings or now participating was hires an attorney who is the person involved with reviewing model policies and they change the changes from will to child and child to will is a personal preference attorneys. >> Well, I
might as well put it out on the public record. So >> yes and um part of us bringing 6512 to you and then um subsequent the 50004 we are going through bargaining with one of our labor partners and this has been a topic of conversation regarding what we are doing as a district and it made us pause and reook at our policy related to this area. And so, um, it was time to do an update anyway. So, perfect opportunity. Um, and you'll see, of course, the first one. Um, we're moving the information to 5004 and we provided some updates. Um, one of the things that we found through investigating this particular policy is that for most individuals, um, for an example, the hepatitis Bshot is now covered as a preventative, uh, measure when you go
to the doctor. And so we updated some of the language in here to reflect that as well. Any other questions I can answer for you? Thank you very Thank you. Is there consensus to move board policy 50 04 to a second reading? >> Yes. >> And the third item is the first reading of board policy 6511 staff safety. Any discussion on 6511? To your point, Director Olsson? >> Shall we leave? Yes. >> Uh is there consensus to move this to second reading? >> Yes. >> Okay. We will now move on to the board director reports on business conducted. >> I don't have any uh past board business I've been working on, but I am extremely excited about the upcoming graduation. And I've also discovered throughout the years being an employer in town and hiring high
school students um is how many award nights and events and things like that over the next couple weeks because a lot of my staff that are high school students are all wanting nights off here and there. I think there was there was one last night and there's another one coming up. There's the scholarship night on the sec on the the the Tuesday after Memorial Day. So, um it is it is truly something. This is the time that I find so exciting uh because the seniors are graduating. The elementary school are moving up to middle school. The middle school's moving up to high school. There's so much change. It's spring. The weather's nice. It's just exciting time to be part of this town and part of this community, part of this school district. So, I agree.
Looking forward to it. Yes, >> you actually set the stage for my comments. I I was able to attend and participate in the A meeting on Thursday night. Thank you, Dr. Ryan, for facilitating that. So, well, um, one of the things that did come up, I had the opportunity to to rotate stations with a couple of parents and they had feedback about transitions. Um they really celebrate what happens for students from fifth to sixth for students from 8th to 9th for students for high school and beyond. But they wonder where the parents are not in the participating in the events that are culminations but in that process of planning they just feel like they don't have voice. Um their students rely on their peers for you know course selections and that sort of thing and
and they really are seeking high school staff to help students identify their strengths so that they can go in a direction that that best meets their needs and their interest and their passions. They say, you know, by about 11th grade as parents, they what they say means nothing, but what an adult at high school says carries incredible weight. So, um really are looking for that and that's something for us to consider as we move forward with AAC. How do we involve parents in the high school beyond planning? How do we involve parents in that fifth to sixth grade transition and eight transition in a more substantive way than we are now? And I recognize that often times you hold something and maybe only a handful of parents appear to show up, but those parents talk
to other parents on the sidelines at soccer games, baseball games, and that sort of thing. And it begins to to build out from what appears to be a low attendance. So whatever we can think about moving forward would be great and part of that is probably asking parents what works besty schedules. >> Yeah. >> Thank you. >> I also attended the um academic advisory committee meeting and it was well put together and we had some really great conversations about um next year's strategic planning and so looking forward to additional work in that space. Um I also want to elevate that um we are doing a stop the bus on Saturday from 9:00 to 5:00. Um as many of you guys know or probably have are familiar um the letter carriers food drive happens usually um
the second weekend in May and this year um due to some staffing issues at our local post office um there was uh they weren't able to participate. So, um, the stuffed above bus event that's happening at Hagen, uh, grocery outlet and QFC from 9:00 to 5:00 on Saturday is to help, um, fulfill the need of our food, our local food bank for the summer months because normally there is a large quantity of food that is uh, received by them by the letter carrier food drive. So, um please consider uh donating this weekend if you're out grocery shopping. And um I also just wanted to um say that I um I'm sad because I can't be at graduation either of the graduations this year um due to work constraints. And so, um, I it's one of
the the best things about being a school board director is is having that celebration with the students and seeing them um, you know, move on to um, all the great things ahead. And so, I just want to send my congratulations to all of those students that are graduating this year. >> Thank you. I think there's three locations, right, for the stuff the best. Is that right? >> Yes. Hagen uh Grocery Outlet and >> Gypsy. Okay. Thank you. >> I also attended the um academic advisory team meeting and this is of the ABC groups. This is the newest one uh started within the last two years and really really important. True. Glad we have this going. And um recently I we visited um kind of comment at last board meeting how impressed I was with our
visit to the Tennessee Elementary School. I saw in all the classrooms all the students including when they were all taking a test perfect behavior. I had visited one other school that hadn't been that way. And so that was very impressive. So the new principle there doing extremely well I've heard from other sources too and that also one of my duties is to review payables each period and I just went into a little detail today commend Gemma for catching something um and there's all kinds of sticky notes about the questions and so on really a very good job and this particular thing was for 7,000 gallons of diesel fuel, we have charged the wrong price. And she caught that, communicated with the with the uh distributor that brings it from the refinery to the bus farm
and got it fixed. >> Thank you. Uh for my comments, uh two comments actually. One is with regard to the consent agenda and uh it's actually item B. There's three items on item B on the consent agenda under um Roman numeral 3 part B and that's retirements and resignations. And uh I'll I'll note that Delena and Grace are on that. But I'll also note that uh Judy Brown, who's here in the audience tonight, uh is on the consent agenda uh uh consent agenda for retirement. And I just want to say um Judy, thank you for all of your years of service in the district and and the many many many uh students lives who you've impacted. So just uh thank you for that and enjoy the time. The uh only other thing and it might
become repetitive by now but I just want to um I want to welcome Macy and Audrey into the uh seat. you can see that there's big shoes to fill, but you guys you will both do very well. You'll do excellent do an excellent job. And just to say once again, we hope that you check in with us, both of you, and let us know how things are going. And uh we just appreciate the the work you've done uh this year on the board of directors. >> With with there being no further business, the May 19th, 2026 regular board meeting is now.
