001time I would like to offer a brief landing acknowledgement. Uh the one offered by the Bashan Heritage Museum is my is the framework and jumping off point. Uh the Bashan Island School District stands on the ancestral lands of the squash or swiftwater people who inhabited Vashan my island since time immemorial. The donation land claim act encouraged large numbers of settlers to claim land even before the medicine creek treaty of 1854. extinguished native claims to it. The Squash were imprisoned on Fox Island during the Fugit Sound Treaty Wars by the territorial government and later relocated to the Puallup Reservation. We acknowledge the people of the Puallup tribe whose stewardship of and relationship with Bashan Mory Island continues today. Thank you. Um at this time, we uh open up the floor for public comment. I didn't have
002anybody sign up. Great. No public comment at this time. Uh we're going to move ahead to the consent agenda. This being a uh small district, I hereby without uh hearing any objections uh suggest that we pass the consent agenda as written. Hearing no objections, the consent agenda passes as written. Thank you, everyone. Uh well, Henry, it's it's your show. It's kind of moving right into the student board uh representatives. Are you prepared to give us a little >> thing? I mean, just a little like update. Um we're working on like setting up a new um appointing and election of members. We It's kind of hard to make progress like it's just hard to like find a time we can all like meet up in person just like sports and stuff. I mean, you know how
003it is. It's just it's kind of hard. But we're working on it and we're planning to like, you know, get it get the actual process started by April. You know, you have to happen at some point. Um but um yeah, we're also working on the policy stuff still. I mean, yeah, we seem to like we all meet up together at some point, but it's been kind of hard to like plan around um everyone. Yeah. So, that's my update, I guess. >> Okay. Um, always keep in mind, I'm sure, and I I don't want to necessarily speak for everyone, but I'm sure we would also be happy to help if there's some way that having more input >> Yeah. >> or if there's someone we can support your process, please don't hesitate to ask. We're we
004stand ready to support you. >> Okay, that's good to hear. Yeah. >> Yeah, absolutely. >> Good. >> Um, great. Uh, Dr. Mocha, national policy updates. >> I have no updates at this time. >> Okay. Thank you very much. Uh, River board led representative, would you like to uh give us an update? I'm sorry, I'm trying to pull up the the document I had set for us. Um, you're moving so fast. >> I know. Um, that's all right. Don't don't panic. We can wait on you. >> Um, okay. the I mean just in terms of updates it's really not different from the last board meeting because the session had had ended and so um just a couple of things that weren't in there there's a new legislation in terms of for AI um passing tied to
005AI restrictions looking at self harm um crisis hotlines etc. So, a law designed uh to shape practices and prevent developers from using manipulative engagement techniques um within that um which should link to our larger conversations about AI but work that's being done done on the statewide level uh to be more intentional about how we're onboarding and experiencing AI. Uh the other updates are really just uh a of the things that we already know about the that we talked about in the last board meeting about the sales tax uh being pushed the a number what we didn't talk as much about is they had pushed to stop or change unfunded mandates and while that wasn't universally they they weren't universally able to achieve that uh they were able to modify them and mitigate impacts um particularly
006for the unfunded uh to a pretty significant degree um and so I wanted to put that out there but I'm not ping out the specifics. Uh, and one of and then just as a foreshadowing that they were, I think more successful than they anticipated being going into this legislative session, which is wonderful. Uh, they are still looking at at a deficit and they're anticipating a quite significant struggle in the next legislative session. >> Thank you. Appreciate it. Um Cassie is not able to be with us tonight, but I believe Dr. No is going to offer us the budget report uh for what month are we looking at here? >> We are looking at February and essentially um it it's the report you see each month and the funds are still uh operating as you would
007expect them to. Um we our expenditures are actually lower um than um the normalized projection of 49% because we're about 49% through the year but that's uh not unexpected. They vacasillate a little bit. Um the monthly reconciliation's up to date and um we continue to monitor those expenditures and purchasing closely. um our policy or uh procedures have changed around that. So, we continue to help folks follow the appropriate procedures. Um we are developing the budget that is ongoing. The good news is that the legislature has finished. The bad news is we still don't have the documents we need, but we anticipate getting them by April 1st. So, that's the budget development piece. Um this is the uh enrollment. Again, it's not any different than what we've been seeing. It just modulates a little bit. Uh
008we do have uh enrollment projections for next year that we're still modifying. So that's again yet to be determined. Um the other piece of information to share with you is that the audit is just about done and we should be hearing about an exit conference soon. Um and it again there are always going to be exit items on an audit. So I anticipate we'll hear a few things that uh we can improve at that time. Um I'm prepared for your questions. You did see the document in advance. I know Cassie sent you an email with some highlights. So, I'm happy to answer any questions you may have about the monthly budget, but it really is the same report you receive every month with the same um charts. Nothing unusual. >> When I met with Cassie
009this week to just review the warrants, she asked if these many pages of um information from the county were useful to us. um if she should continue to include those. I personally was fine to let them go if there were things that were unusual that I would ask her to call them out in the sort of in that page too that she always has sort of a short narrative. Um obviously she's not here to address that, but if I'm not sure if anybody else feels like those are musthaves or if people could let them go just in the interest of of brevity and um but if people feel like they're useful, they can be included. But it did come up in conversation. Can you reference which pages? >> The controllers report all of these things
010from the county like uh >> that you need to see the reports that come afterwards where the county says you know you got to reconcile this and then she always tells you we'll reconcile it next month and here's what it is. >> If you still want to see those things and have her speak about them she's happy to do it. It just districts don't typically seal but if you like seeing it then we'll continue to provide it for you. It's just usually the budget report that is very typical ends at the ex the balance sheet but >> I I do actually review those every single >> we'll just keep putting them in there. She doesn't necessarily have to talk about them, but if Lisa includes stuff, I can look over it if she >> sure
011enough. Yep. >> Um, so go ahead and move on. >> Yeah. I'm moving on to budget planning. As I said, we'll get information on April 1st. Our expectation is that the board will get the first picture of expenses and revenue together on April 23rd. That's your next board meeting. And then on May 12th, we fully expect to uh have a work session on the budget with conversation around any specifics the board may want to talk about. Uh we're looking to by the end of June have the budget in place like we did last year, especially because we're migrating to cumulative because all of that data needs to be everything needs to be closed before we go into that uh migration. So, it's important that we're timely this year. So, we expect to have uh we've
012actually been working on the budget um for months. So, um what we don't know yet is our revenue. Um and what we're working on, and I'll go into that if it's okay if I go right into the organization. >> Sure. What we've been working on is really moving our thoughts to how do we serve the needs of our students in the most effective and efficient way possible. Um as opposed to what's our revenue? Okay, we'll have our expenses meet our revenue. What is the most uh efficient way to to run the program? And we started with uh the administrative structures. And this organizational chart represents months of work by the team to get to this place. And I just want to walk through and I know the board uh saw this in advance. Um and
013uh the way it came about was not only let's look at our administrative structure, but we also had attrition. Uh as you know uh the director of student services uh Katherine is retiring. Stephanie has uh reduced her um contract for next year to a 0.4. Um we recognized that we no longer needed the services of a director of facilities and all of these things came to light over the course of the months leading up to this and we have budgetary concerns. So between those two things we really started looking at how can we be more efficient with the staff we have given what we know about the folks who are leaving. So uh the other piece of information to share with you is that I also shared this at a full staff meeting on March
01413th and took any and all questions that people had at that moment. That was a Friday. And then I made myself available Monday morning um before school and Monday afternoon after school and a handful of folks came and spoke to me about it. But the questions were really more about not this but what's happening with me >> and what's happening with teaching. And so there were very few questions about this change and actually staff again in April when we know more about where we are budgetwise and I'll get to that in a minute. I would just want to walk through this. Um I am going to stand up this if you don't mind. So, um, teaching and learning. I'll start here. So, we know Stephanie's reduced her contract, right? I don't know what you know
015about what happens inside the district, but Stephanie carries the ball and her work around professional development, around the grants that she administers, around the data management system, around teaching and learning and curriculum and all of these things. Um, we're going to miss her. So thankfully she's staying on to help transition us. Um but we need to make sure we can stay intact. Um so what we talked about was moving halftime to halftime assistant principal at the elementary school and having Karen actually kind of go up and downstairs, right? so she can help evaluate staff downstairs and make sure that we're moving along on teaching and learning, namely um making sure professional development is getting done, that we're monitoring our curriculum, that we're dealing with, you know, student performance data and so on and so forth.
016Yet to be determined, right? This is we're doing everything a year at a time. This is succession planning. So, we're putting this in place and you have a new superintendent coming in a year from June. So, that person may have different thoughts, but want to make sure we put them in a good place now to move forward. Um, as I said, we're eliminating the director of facilities position. Um, and uh this position in total for director of teaching and learning is dropping to 0.9 in total. Um, and we're taking the current athletic director who was a teacher on special assignment and we are moving that support to the middle school. The individual doesn't want to do that work. So, we're posted that job and that dean of students will serve as support at the middle
017school because the middle school principal will take on the oversight of the facilities manager, which there's a posting up for that and we likely will have an internal candidate. So, we're not going to have an additional person. Uh we may will likely move somebody into that position. We have a food service manager and we're working with technology because there will be some shifts there as well uh because of some attrition. Um high school principal will now have an assistant principal who's also an athletic director. So that's an administrative position. The current assistant principal does CTE. So we're moving that back to the principal. So the principal will be the CTE director. There'll be an assistant principal slathletic director. And then we currently have um a CTE specialist uh who's an office manager at this time
018and we currently have an AL manager in Heather Ericson. So again rearranging reorganizing question I'm assuming that's a typo under director of teaching and learning where it says FTESS resigned by 6. Should that be FTE TNL? Stephanie Spencer. SS. >> Oh, students. I was reading a student services. >> Sorry. Stephanie Spencer. >> Great. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Yeah. That's the only place where someone is listed as name. Yes. And not in their role. So, great. Thanks. >> Sorry, I I missed that. You're right. We should have had position, not name. >> Um, so anyway, it's a net 1.6 reduction in the administrative structure. Um, and we'll see how it goes for the following year as to what we do and how things work. Um, I'm happy to take any questions from the board on
019this. Um, again, I've seen it and worked on it and planned with people for quite some time. So, I know you've seen it before, but the conversation around it hasn't happened yet. So I'm happy to have that conversation if you have questions or updates that you'd like. >> So for clarification, the two positions that we're having were searching to fill then would be the dean of students at the middle school and the assistant principal slash athletic director of high school. >> Right. So this dean of students has been posted and it's been posted internally because it will be a teacher on special assignment. Got it. So, we anticipate um we actually anticipate a middle school teacher wanting to step up into the role. Greg is in process right now with uh taking applications. Uh in
020terms of assistant principal athletic director, um I have on my calendar final interviews uh for finalists on April 2nd, but I believe those interviews are happening early this coming week. And John is in charge of that. And I think we had 40 60 40 to >> I'm mixed up between >> 60 60 applicants for that. So he's narrower the field and we'll be interviewing um and we want an experienced person in both athletics and building administration. So he's pretty confident that we're going to get a candidate. We're actually going to get several candidates that he can move forward to the finalist stage. on your agenda tonight. We we were uh very successful in being able to recruit and hire a director of student services. Uh Ann Marie Dufo uh Anna Marie Dufo was on your
021personal agenda for this evening. We had help me out Amy was it was close to 40 candidates. >> Yeah, I can actually if you want me to I can >> No, it's fine. We narrowed it. We narrowed it to six and we interviewed um we had some folks drop out but we interviewed finalists and the team unanimously selected >> 30. >> Yeah. Selected Anna Marie. She comes to us as you know with uh experience as an assistant superintendent up in at OSPI. Uh she's been a director of student services and building principal and a teacher and a counselor over the course of her career. So, we feel um very confident that she'll be able to step into that role. Um other questions. I I um I've asked most of my questions tied to this piece,
022but I had a question from an employee actually and I looked on here and I don't see it for the dean of students. There's an apply now. I didn't see a deadline for that. Is there a posted deadline and now it won't let me click on it? the same way. >> Oh, it it just probably closed. >> Yeah, it was a it was a internal. So, it's a fiveday, I believe. >> Oh, so it just closed today. >> Yeah. >> Okay, other questions. So, later on in this evening's agenda, it's on there for uh because everything is subject to board approval. Uh so this or well not everything but most things and this organizational structure is subject to board approval. So it's it's on your agenda this evening um again. So if you have questions
023that come up between now and then I'm happy to answer them. So all right if we move on questions about the work chart. Okay. Thank you. Uh moving on. Uh so now we're in the discussion portion squarely. Uh item B, update to policy 2161, special education and related services for eligible students. So River and I didn't get a chance to talk about it. This is actually a change that came about through um a complaint that had gone to OSPI and um we were uh told to look at our policy, revise our policy as necessary. We ran it by a legal council and we also ran it by OSPI who's given their okay on this. But again, it's board policy, so it's up to the school board. >> So, I will abstain from conversations related to
024this policy and decisions for both 2161 and 2255 since they're both related to my family. Um, but I thank the board for and administration for all the work that you've done regarding this and helping with inclusion in our schools. >> Noted. Thank you. >> Um, any recommended changes or >> any question? >> I looked through it carefully. Um, and you know, it's it makes utter sense to me. um you not being a specialist in in uh legal language, I trust that all is well and and I didn't see anything that Yeah. >> I only wondered if there was any reason to um explicitly name what an IEP team consists of or does that fall somewhere else? I wasn't sure if that's >> it's actually defined by law and it's in other policies. policy related to
025this. >> Great. >> So, this really is something that um explains that one can be in an AL program and if the IEP team determines that that is the free and appropriate public education opportunity, we're going to provide services there accordingly. This this 2255 follows the same pattern because it too uh refers to um alternative learning programs and when students are attending those programs. So it's kind of the same language in both same process. >> Any questions or concerns here? Uh then we will um move on. Uh item D, new policy 2414, community service. >> Yeah. And River and River and I need to get into a cadence around policy. We haven't gotten there yet. We've both been running in different directions. So I'm going to just cover these, but as we go forward, we'll
026work together on them so that it's really coming from the board. Um, this particular one is based on an RCW that came to be and it essentially says that the board's going to implement an incentive program to recognize students um who provide community service. And in fact, we we do right now um we require community service. Um you probably all know that. Um just want to get to my notes so I'm Sorry about that. So, the high school has it as a graduation requirement. Seniors must have 25 hours. Um the documentation is coordinated and if a student doesn't meet that requirement, they actually can't walk at graduation. Um and it's nonprofit service and they actually get recognized because they have an ice cream party at the end for all the students that uh met their
027requirement. And um so is that the incentive program? Right now it is, but its incentive is that they get to graduate. >> Right. That that to me that language is a little peculiar. >> It is peculiar. And then if you look at the um the actual procedure that is recommended, it becomes even more peculiar because the recommended procedure gives examples. Um and uh one could say that the traditional pieces of vape that are given out at graduation, >> yes, >> uh is a uh recognition of community service because that's a huge component of what um a student has to meet in one way or another in order to really be nominated. And that's been going on well before I became a teacher. So >> thank you for that information because this particular procedure that was
028is you know it could be varsity letter recognition, certificate of merit and any other incentives that um the district may want to offer. Basically, what the policy allows is that the district can offer incentives and it becomes the an opportunity for the district to spend funds on incentives should it choose to. So, that's a piece of why that policy goes into place, but um it's currently with the high school principal who's reviewing it. And >> yeah, I'd like to for sure like to see that again because >> the only meat in here is this incentive program. And the other the rest of it is it's nice to volunteer. >> Yeah, >> it that's not really a >> well policy. >> It isn't. And the next one is um performance-based pathways for graduation. I mean, this
029is one of those things where it's an opportunity for students. Our district actually requires community service. It's not required, though it's encouraged for graduation. And so, we've got more work to do on this. I'm not suggesting that it go on your next agenda for approval. This is just a first read. We have some work to do on this one. >> Can I ask a number of the questions I had you've you've already answered and they will be answered. Um are there also limits? So you're saying everyone has to do 25 hours. Are there limits in terms aside from one I mean you've got to meet your mandatory credits right within that? Um, outside of meeting those mandatory credits and other things, tight electives, etc., etc., within that, are there any limits on the hours service?
030>> You mean can a kid do more than 25, >> right? Toward toward in an incentified way, any >> Oh, you know what? We haven't even gone down the road of, you know, are there other pathways to graduation? I mean, could they do more volunteer service and count it for a credit and those kinds of things? I haven't even talked about that. I don't know off the cuff, Stephanie, if you have any thing to add on that. >> Yeah. Or from your perspective as a junior, what do you know? >> Like my question is like is there official policy like saying like how the school can like how the school is meant to like help kids like find opportunities to volunteer? I know like it can kind of like I mean I'm not saying it's
031like hard on a bachelor because like there's all this opportunities like farm work and stuff like like is there an official thing that says like someone the school has to like check in with kids and like make sure they're actually having plans get done there is yes and that's Jen Co I believe is the one who handles all the documentation and it's really a senior thing >> and they have a fair >> for service um they actually can start anytime time um once they start high school community maybe service >> and it's not restricted >> um used to be a little bit more restrictive how they could get those hours but now it's much more broadbased um and so most kids will turn in their forms as soon as they have 25 but we have
032many many students who do well over 25 hours there's a lot of different ways that they can get 20. Sorry, River, did you? >> No, I was going to go on. Yeah, you already clicked on performance. >> Okay. 2415 performance-based pathway for high school graduation. Jump in if you have questions or you have a comment. I the way it is written I can see performance-based opportunities but I can't in terms of a pathway is it uh are there limits in terms of the substitutions for a pathway for other courses or there or the number of credits um can a performance-based pathway qualify for some of the the core requirements I think okay and then Can it can it function as independent study outside of that? >> Again, this is sort of this is our toe
033in the water. There are many performance pathways and right now um I'm not sure. I can't answer your questions. I would have to ask John and the counselors or maybe Stephanie knows. But statewide there are many opportunities for pathways to graduation and boards have to adopt them. And there's, you know, we do CTE credits that are in two places and we do, you know, in lie of passing the state assessment, you can do this thing. Um, but I I'm just not there. >> Surprised to see this one because we thought our policy that we currently have covers it. Our procedure has this written into it. So, there's I don't know five or six different pathways. They're all considered equal pathways. Most of our students meet the pathway requirement through passing the state assessment in their
034sophomore year. Um, so that's the vast majority of them. Then I say the second highest way that people do it is through CTE. There's about five or six different what they call CTE completion where they take a sequence of classes and that counts as that. And then you can combine, right? So, like maybe they passed their ELA, SBA, but not math, so they do ASVAB and they can do it that way. Or they do they choose to do a performance-based assessment um for that um which is primarily in use at the alternative learning program. Um, so there's just many different ways that the state, so it used to be everyone had to pass the state assessments and they changed that many years ago to allow different ways to >> take the SAT is for a
035certain level and that counts as a pathway. Yeah. >> All right. Sorry, I navigated away from the There we go. Sorry. Now I'm eating. That's cool. uh policy 5401. This is an update sick leave. >> So this both this and the next policy on um excuse me, family medical and maternity leave. Um they the policies are simply being updated to everybody's favorite word to remain evergreen by referencing the RCWs as opposed to restating them. So the impact and the content is functionally the same, but it is taking is taking out a lot of boards. So if they up update the wow update the RCW, it de facto updates the policy. And that's true on both 5401 and 5404. >> Are these the same to you that we just updated? >> Why yes, the the the
0365404 we did just update to be compliant with the law. >> Thank you. Any other question? >> Groundhog. >> Yeah. Great. >> Um, any other questions or >> Yeah, you can. 5404. Same. Same. Same. >> Okay. Okay. Moving on to the decision portion of our agenda. Resolution 830, reduction in force for 202627 school year. Um, are there any uh questions at this time? Hearing none, um, can I, um, >> I move to >> resolution 830. >> Can I get a second, please? >> I second the move to pass resolution 830. >> Um, oh, I should have had an advisory vote first. Um, Henry On behalf of the student board representatives, uh do you vote to approve resolution 830 reduction in force for 2627 school year? >> I do. >> Thank you. Is there any further
037discussion? All those in favor? >> I. >> Any opposed? All right. Reduction uh resolution 830 reduction in force for 2627 passes. Um, at this time we will vote on whether or not to accept the facilities report. I do just want to mention again publicly how impressed I was with the team that came and spoke to us uh, three weeks ago, something like that. I feel like we are in exceptionally good hands. I know we have some uh very bold uh well not even bold, we have some a large uh number of things on the docket that we would like to see improved uh over the next several years, but I was really impressed with how that all was presented to us. That being said, uh can I get a motion to uh approve accepting the
038facilities report, please? >> I have a question. I am actually I just I'm wondering, I should know this, but if it publicly posted and or if it can be and where that is. I just was looking on the district website. >> It's under bond levy on the district website and the facilities plan is there >> and that will continue to get updated. Um, as you know, we have a bond planning team that's beginning. Uh, first meeting is Monday evening. I believe Martha and Jess are the board representatives on that team. And uh we have several community members who have stepped up. Henry has asked to be on the team and will be on the team and we've invited all the facilities uh team members from the first phase. So hopefully folks will show up. There
039are five meetings. Um the first one being Monday and then they're throughout the spring until um hopefully by June we have a recommendation for the board in terms of what to put out for a bond or some scenarios to consider for for the next bond which would be in February if the board uh chooses to uh put it on the ballot. Any other questions or items for concern? >> I don't see it. >> Oh, it's there. I saw it the other day. >> Peter will send you a link to it. >> Um, would you recommend a student advisory? >> Yes. Great. >> Um, did I get a first and a second on this? Can I get a motion to I did. Thank you. At this time, uh, student representative, um, would you like to, uh,
040vote to approve or sorry, accept the facilities report? >> Okay. >> I think I think someone was about to and then we Yeah, then we stopped. Great. Thank you. It wasn't just me. Uh, at this time, can I get a motion to approve accepting the facilities report? I motion to approve accepting the facilities report as is. >> Thank you, Director Adams. Uh, can I get a second, please? >> And I second the acceptance motion. >> Thank you. At this time now, really, Henry, I'd like to know if you would like to approve accepting the facilities report. >> I do. >> Thank you very much. All those in favor of accepting the facilities report. >> Any opposed? Thank you. It is accepted. Uh, moving on to the organizational chart for the 2627 school year. We've already
041had some discussion of this. Can I get a motion to approve the organizational chart for the 2627 school year? >> I'd like to move to approve the organizational chart for the 2627 school year. >> Thank you. Can I get a second, please? >> I second. Thank you very much. Your little cadence here seems to have falling apart a little bit. >> Um, yeah. >> Uh, Henry, if you would, would you like to, uh, approve the organizational chart for the 2627 school year? >> I approve the organ organizational chart for the 26 27 school year. >> Thank you. Uh, all those in favor? >> I. Any opposed? Thank you very much. Uh, moving on to the administrator contract for the 2627 school year. Can I get a motion to approve, please? >> Motion to approve administrator
042contract. >> Thank you very much. Can I get a second, please? >> Second. >> Thank you. Uh, Henry, would you uh like to support uh accepting the administrator contract for the 26 22nd school year? >> I would support it. Yeah. >> Thank you. Uh, all those in favor? Any opposed? Thank you. Uh, we've accepted that. Uh, moving on. Uh, updated policy 635, capitalization threshold for leases. Can I get a motion to approve, please? >> I move to approve 6035. >> Thank you. Can I get a second, please? >> A second. >> Thank you. Uh, student representative, do you vote in favor of uh, policy 635? >> I do. Thank you very much. All those in favor? >> I. >> All those opposed. Thank you. I did not vocalize that. I I also approve here. Um
043uh lastly, new policy 6895, pesticide notification, hosting, and recordkeeping. Can I get a motion to approve, please? >> Ma'am, just thought we need a little second. >> All right. Would you like DBT? Is that what you're saying? >> Exactly. >> A motion to approve 6895. >> Thank you. Can I get a second, please? >> A second. >> Uh, student representative, how would you advise that we uh proceed? Would you support 6895? >> I would support. Yeah. >> Thank you very much. All those in favor? >> I. Any opposed? >> Thank you. That passes 6895 and concludes the decision section of our meeting. Thank you everyone. Uh, we now have a second opportunity for public comment. >> Yeah. Say a little something. >> Yep. >> Um, >> Amanda, would you have your last name, please? >>
044Curtis. >> Thank you. >> Okay. Um, I just want to thank all of you guys again for all the hard work I know you put in. It's not easy. Um, something I want to bring up is the wording on special education policy and ALA placement. to myself and to anybody that in my household or close friends and family that either work in education or in law that have seen it have given me the feedback that this feels like we're separating students. Um because of I was really glad to hear you say if we can provide it the AL we will do so because when I read it and when I had anybody else read it that is the exact opposite >> um that they thought that meant. So, I would strongly encourage the board to
045look at the wording and put in there that if we can provide this at the in the AL setting, we will um because all of our spaces including the AL should be inclusive. And the wording on it, at least how I read it and how the people in around me that are not tied to this district at all did not know it was district policy. I was just like, tell me what you think the wording of this means. Is it just me that's reading it like this? um education, people in law, people in other specialties were all like this feels like we're because it says the district retains um specifically of course my phone doesn't open. Um the IET team determines placement and services based on the students individual needs and the district determines the
046appropriate location and delivery. Um, and when you're talking about the AL setting, it really felt like if we don't want to or it's going to be hard, we're going to send you to Shitakqua or McMurray or and the high school. And that is all determined by the IEP team. I don't I don't want to get into a dialogue, but the IEP team is the key statement there. So, sorry I interrupted you. Um, I would just like to give that feedback of myself and anybody that I've had read it were like the wording on this seems really strange and I just really encourage you guys to look at it and really focus on inclusion in all settings throughout the district, not just at the age appropriate buildings. Is there another place if if what I would
047appreciate is if you if there are specific pieces of language in here that you >> particularly want to call out if you would send those. >> Yeah, I can I can ask >> an annotated version. >> Yeah. >> of this or however you want to communicate. It would be helpful to see in front of us what specific language >> um you found questionable or >> I can I can absolutely do that. I just wanted to let that be known to the board that multiple people from different backgrounds that have no affiliation with this district were like, "Wait, pump the brakes that this doesn't sit right." Um, so I wanted that to be shared with the board. >> I do. >> Yeah, I do. And this is not a dialogue. It's an appreciation um for even
048bringing up um something that I had, you know, no idea that people would would react that way. So, thank you so much for bringing that up. >> Yeah, absolutely. And I just want to thank you guys again because I know how hard you guys work because I just come to the public once it's a lot. >> Thank you. >> But thank you. Um, at this time, uh, we will move on to the superintendent report. >> Thank you. I had an opportunity today to attend Hades Town High School. That was amazing. They really did a beautiful job. Beautiful voices and just well done to all of them. Uh, as you probably know, K8 conferences are happening these two and a half days. So, no students in school and lots of parents coming in and out seeing
049their teachers. I already mentioned the bond planning team and that begins on Monday. Uh, I wanted to let you know we did have a safety team meeting that included many community partners, fire department, uh, police, um, bash be prepared and so on. So, um felt really good about connecting with folks and putting names to faces and um help having them help us with continued planning. So, that happened um and uh we continue on. It's been um it's been a very interesting process to align our teachers in their specialty area and make sure that as we move forward, we continue to focus on strengths and putting teachers where their strengths are and where their certification is. And it's uh been a challenging um several weeks because it's different, but we're getting there. And uh I think
050the outcome is going to be very uh will be positive. But right now there's a lot of ambiguity for folks. So if you're hearing some consternation, that would be why because people want to know what what what are you doing and what am I going to be doing and it's just too soon to tell. Um we don't have the budget picture yet either. So it's just a a hard time when there's ambiguity. That's all I have. >> Okay. Um, board director remarks. Does anybody have anything they'd like to say? River, >> I just had a couple of pieces which is which are all really tied to the degree to which I see people investing in this district and in our kids and educators. And so one you referenced the parent teacher conferences um and the
051degree to which our teachers are meeting and talking with and working with parents and kids in really uh in-depth and transformative ways and I know they must be absolutely exhausted. when they have another day uh to go with that. But uh I hear such con, you know, consistent appreciation for that. But also across the board, I just want to say in the past several months, the Bashan School Foundation's investment um and the work they're doing that provides the opportunity for transformative work here. our PTO and I'm not this was off the cuff so I'm not the working with our leadership building and district the the work session in terms of data and conversations and looking at the way data has been utilized to uh adjust or or further investment or deepen investment or make changes
052and things that are that are really having tangible outcomes in terms of student success which has been beautiful to watch. Uh and then with community partners, I've just seen so many active things happening there. And we're talking about levying bonds and having something passed right there. Um and also just a sense of transparency, accountability, and accessibility within the districts. I feel like in terms of the conversations that are happening from things as simple as uh I know I had mentioned a desire to know when there was a I can't think of the word for it but when a drill happened in the school tied to safety or this just knowing that that happened so that that possibility existed to talk with kids about it and I you know and that is already happening so things
053that have been talked about and it just there's just definitely to me a distinct feeling saying that the things that are being brought up and addressed um are being evaluated as to their worth and their effectiveness and implemented in in strong and clear ways. And so I just want to express that gratitude because this district does not thrive without that shared and extended investment. And I just feel privileged to see it in so many places right now. Thank you. Anyone else? I'm gonna give a quick shout out for the um upcoming I guess it's a week from tonight PTO spelling be. I'm a really overly confident speller. I'm also wildly competitive. I expect to be very loud and probably have my butt handed to me. But I am going to the spelling be and I
054can't wait. It's an adult only spelling bee next Thursday benefiting the PTO at hop. >> What words do an adult? >> I don't know. I'm pretty excited. I just want to say last time I checked there was plenty of tickets still available. You can buy a whole table or you can buy an individual ticket but support the PTO. They really I feel like between them and the school's foundation they're they're being innovative and getting out there and really trying to drum up not only fundraising but also just participation and enthusiasm. So, I'm super excited about that. I also want to give out a shout out to one of my favorite things on social media that has come back online, which is the senior commitments page on Instagram. I feel like it's like, do you know
055about this, Henry? Yeah, >> it's like this slow uh it almost feels like graduation season kicks off where kids c it's a very sweet thing where they show up a childhood picture of of this student and then their graduation picture and it usually says what they're doing next whether they're going traveling or they're going to go to school or whatever. But it's just a very celebratory and sweet thing that happens on Instagram and it's a nice way to cheer on our departing seniors as they move on to what's next. was just very sweet. That's all. Um, I guess with that, this is really must be a record. It's about 6:51, y'all. And I Oh, I don't think anybody made any commitments at this time. >> No. Okay. Welcome back, Martha. Thank you. >> Uh, this
056meeting is adjourned. 651. Thanks. Open. So river
