001this meeting to order. Uh, welcome everyone. Welcome guests. Um, fill up the right weeks uh agenda. Sorry. Here we are. Um, great. Um, I'd like to u this is one that I can blanket to like assuming there are no objections, I'd like to approve the agenda as written. hearing. No objections. The agenda uh approved as offered. That's right. All right. Killing it. >> Uh uh for a late acknowledgement, I just wanted to say that the board had the great fortune uh I guess it was two weeks ago to go to Seattle U to listen to a panel of education really geniuses and visionaries. And at Seattle U, uh, they offered a, um, land and labor acknowledgement that was quite profound and, um, I thought quite beautiful. Despite my best efforts, I could not find, uh,

002the exact text that they shared. Um, uh, but I at least want to actually start with a labor acknowledgement that I found on one of their partner organizations. We must acknowledge that much of what we know about this country today, including its culture, economic growth, and development throughout history and across time, has been made possible by the labor of enslaved Africans and their ascendants who suffered the horrors of the transatlantic trafficking of their people, child slavery, and Jim Crow. We are indebted to their labor and their sacrifice. And we must acknowledge the tremors of that violence throughout the generations and the resulting impact that can still be felt and witnessed today. On the front of the land acknowledgement, I just want to say that I had um an amazing opportunity this past weekend to go

003up to the Nisquali and go to an event put on by the um the land trust at Nisquali to visit one of the rivers that they are restoring um that feeds into the Nisquali. was the Michelle uh I think it's Michelle Creek and got to see um salmon uh pinks jumping about as far as I am from river and it was quite profound to see the um results of many years of effort uh between the tribal partners and the local land trust and to see evidence of the um culture and um work of the stewarding of these lands and waters by uh tribal cousins throughout the region. and we extend our gratitude to them uh past, present, and future generations. Uh with that, I'd like to move on to public comment. Does anybody have Is

004there anyone signed in for public comment, Peter? >> Uh anybody here for public comment? >> Okay. Thanks. Nice to see you, Becky and Doc. Um uh moving on to the consent agenda. If there are no objections, I'd like to um approve the consent agenda as written. Are there any objections? Hearing none, consent agenda passes as written. Thank you very much. Um all right, our good friends from Haya are with us via Zoom. Hello, John. >> Hello, Chris. Good evening. Uh that's Hazel. You can see Hazel right there. Hi. Team Redhead is really showing up here for the team. Uh, welcome. We'd love to hear from you about the superintendent search. >> Well, good evening. Thank you so much. Um, we appreciate the opportunity to check back in about the status of the search and we

005just have about four items to share with you briefly and see if you have any questions for us. So, we appreciate the time. Um, first of all, we had two days in the district a couple weeks ago that were just exceptional. So, again, uh, thank you to Peter for all of his help with all of the logistics. Thank you to all the participants including including your incredible student reps to the board um, who were in one of the sessions with us. But we ended up talking with um, personally 86 individuals. Uh in addition there were 127 people who completed the survey uh totaling 213 voices you know heard in that engagement phase and we are working on the leadership profile report as we speak and it should be ready um shortly for the board's review.

006We are scheduled to present the leadership profile report formally to the board on the 13th of November if that still works for everyone. Um so that that is the plan regarding um engagement and the leadership profile report. So John a couple updates. >> Sure. Yeah. recruiting. Um, in addition to the advertising that we launched, right after we finalized the position announcement, we've been engaged in active outreach. Um, that said, uh, we typically do not see a flurry of application activity until that leadership profile report is published and disseminated. Um, and so we are expecting some more application activity. As of today, we have 10 in the pipeline. Three of those 10 have been formally submitted and seven are in process, not yet completed. Uh we do encourage folks when we uh reach out or when

007we receive calls to go ahead and initiate uh the application if they're interested. That way um we see uh their documents and application paperwork as it comes in. Uh and we do vetting right away. um you know once we have a full submission um we also uh with these early searches sometimes see an increase in application activity and inquiries around the holiday period mainly because when you have uh leaders who are actively serving uh they leverage that time off to prepare materials reach out ask questions those kinds of things. So, we are uh optimistic about that as well. And our outreach uh continued today. I was on the phone uh with a colleague um asking them to help us spread the word and then with a candidate who's already reached out to us to ask

008more about the position. So, um we are feeling uh really good about this stage in the game, but the leadership profile is an important milestone for the recruiting update. Uh, and then some key dates. Chris mentioned the November 13th leadership profile uh presentation to the board. We will get that to you uh ahead of time, so you have a little bit of time to preview that before uh we're in the public meeting with you. On December 8th, we'll do another one of these board meeting updates. And then uh we continue our recruiting and screening uh between that uh date and January 9th, which is the application deadline. Following the deadline, we've scheduled January 14th uh for a special board meeting with the board. And our notes currently say that that needs to be scheduled after

0092:00 p.m. I think based on board availability. Um and so we'll need to pin down a specific start time on that day. And it's generally u a two-hour meeting uh where we present uh the slate of applicants along with our screening results. Uh and generally via the board portal, we will send you that information well ahead of that meeting or as far ahead of that meeting as possible so that you have some time to review the information before the 14th. And then uh based on that application screening, um we identify semi- finalists that we'll invite to interview with the board in executive session. Uh, and then on the 14th, we're also going to walk you through an interview workshop, just review some protocols there, but also finalize some interview questions. And we'll talk more about

010that as we get closer in terms of how we invite you to weigh in with some questions or topics you would like to see included. Uh, while also looking at some sample questions we will provide that will be linked to the themes in the leadership profile report on January 23rd. We are holding that date for semi- finalist interviews with the board. February 3, four, and five are the finalist interview dates. Um, and then typically on that final interview day um or maybe the day after the board, if they feel confident um in their decision, will make um a selection announcement. that announcements typically contingent on negotiating a contract with the selected candidate along with any background check independent background check the board may have opted to proceed with. Uh and then transitions uh begin after

011the board likely in February takes action on approving a contract um and then [clears throat] uh transition activities with the candidate as their availability um provides for and then HYA does facilitate um half-day transition meeting for the board and new superintendent as part of our service. uh but we generally wait till the spring to do that as the new candidates getting close to starting officially on July one. So that's a quick recap of key dates. >> Thank you, John. And we wanted to also thank Juniper and Martha for serving as your board's liaison. Uh we've been checking in pretty regularly weekly um to make sure things are moving along and that there's open uh communication. So, um, thank you all for the opportunity for a briefing tonight. We wanted to see if there were any

012questions for us at this at this point. >> River has a question. Um, thank you for this update. Um, it's fantastic. I get my only question you were talking that 10 people are kind of in the pipeline and three have already formally submitted, but we don't have the leadership profile yet. And so in terms of hiring at this level, I mean, one of the things for me is that I would always tailor to the specific position. And so do the people who have already submitted have an opportunity to hand in additional materials that speak more directly to the position as articulated? >> Yes. >> Oh, go ahead, John. >> Yeah. Yes, they have that option um inside the application deadline and we just make clear we're asked that question um that that's permissive um as

013long as it's inside the deadline you've established anyone else. >> Okay, I think that's it then. Thank you so much for joining us as always and for being such confident competent stewards of this process. really appreciate it. >> Thank you. Take care everyone. >> Good night. >> Wonderful. Um uh let's move on to uh hear from our student board reps. >> Okay, I'm going start. Um I'm Oscar. You guys didn't know me. Uh fall sports are wrapping [clears throat] up. We have um volleyball senior night on Monday. Um, and we just had our cross country uh senior night. I actually participated. I raced my first race of the season uh PR at 37 minutes >> for the 5K. Um, yeah. Um, the juniors took their um, PST last um, two weeks ago and that went

014well. Uh, we also had the college fair at the um, senior center or Seattle center uh, last week which was um, pretty fun. Um, we had our first official like I don't know if everyone knows but we are like the student board reps and then we have a separate group at this high school of a bunch of different grades students and interested and we had a huge turnout for that which was really exciting because we had a little little drop off last year and so we have our first project underway a lot of really excited kids and it's just fun to see I'm excited to see what we have to do this year. Um, I was able to go to the athlete leadership conference. It was at Lumenfield. Super interesting. Good to meet a bunch

015of other like high school athletes and coaches and hear about all that and just it was just a fun fun little day and it yeah was super interesting. And um the senior meeting was today. We got to know all about the upcoming events and exciting news for a picture. And then I'm not sure what it's called, but the 9th through 11th graders took like the social health survey or something. >> Healthy youth survey. [laughter] >> So that happened today and that's all that's been going on around here. >> Hazel, can you say what you said something about the student leadership group and you were starting on your first project. Is it known? Is it something you share or not? We our goal, one of my goals last year, but I kind of I don't know,

016we didn't really get to it was that to increase attendance on the first day of each school year. Like I I felt like that was a really easy goal for us to just raise awareness because I noticed that a lot of kids didn't know what it like what their impact was. It's always like oh attend like attendance matters but like why does it matter? And so I would like told all these kids like, "Well, you like $10,000 per student who shows up." I just dumped it down to that because I know it's it gets deeper in the weeds. But everyone is like super interested when they know the facts. And so we were just brainstorming ideas to get like motivation for kids to show up. So like cool lunches, just letting people know. We're using

017some posters. We're going to get our Instagram back up and running and just educating kids on that. So, we had a lot of really cool ideas passed around and people are coming. It's really cute because a bunch of kids are like coming up to me after like, "Here's what about this?" I'm like, "Well, I don't know." And then they're like, "Oh." And everyone's getting really excited about it. So, hopefully we'll have more. Our goal is to get that in um project like the first thing done by I think December 1st. We had to push it back a little bit with because we had some problems. But December 1, we're trying to get our like first fun like fun thing that kids want to go. >> Thank [snorts] you. Thank you. Um all right. Uh Miss

018Ziza Monthly budget report, please. >> Hi everybody. Um so not a very long report tonight for budget. Um as you can see up top, this is preliminary. So this is our budget status report for September. We have not yet closed the fiscal year for um last year. So um these numbers are not quite ready to be presented. Um I posted some things for September. Um but really until we get the F196 submitted and approved OSPI, I won't have more information. Um just a little update on that. Um I have four out of the five funds completed. So I'm just working on getting general fund done. Um hopefully that will be done by the end of next week for the following um which will be really exciting and after that then um I'll be able to

019do a full presentation for September for you as well as um go over the F196 with everybody. >> Great. Is that it for this? Yes. Um is that it for you? Nope. We're going to see >> Oh, no. She's got to stay. >> Okay. Three times. So, >> hey. All right. It's kind of a cash show. >> Uh, national national policy updates, please. >> Uh, so on 9:26, several states filed for injunctive relief against the January executive order around the rewriting of sexual health curriculum to basically write out or erase categories of students, including transgender and gender diverse youth. So that uh injunctive relief is still pending court but at the same time Washington state uh takes precedence. So we acknowledge all of our students gender diverse transgender uh cisgender. Um so it was an

020executive order which doesn't really hold weight but there was still an injunction injunctive relief filed. So we'll hear more about that. On October 15th, um an injunction was filed against the federal government for its shutdown. Um certainly we know and we've heard about the reduction in force at the federal level for the education department among other departments. Um the most relevant short-term impact is that uh without a budget, our supplemental nutritional assistance program or SNAP uh will not have funding on November 1st. So there will be folks who use that uh support who will be hurting. So hopefully there will be some relief there. Um, that's what I have on the federal level and you'll hear from me more again this even with the SNAP funding, you know, I know things can change between now

021and November 1st. Um, so putting a lot in motion can can be a little bit strange, but I guess one of the things I'm wondering are the things that we can do or look at as a as a larger community. >> I think the larger community is they have action happening as a school community. Um, you know, our students are supported uh nutritionally. Certainly at Shiakwa there uh food is free for breakfast and lunch and we support uh free and reduced at the middle and high. Uh and there are community efforts to make sure folks have um food throughout the weeks right throughout the weekend and so on. Um so I know the community is engaged and fully aware. Um, so I just wanted to make sure the school community is engaged. >> As a

022reminder, the Bashon Social Service Network, which includes the food bank and BFS, um, the senior center, etc., etc., they meet monthly and um, I'm part of the um, partners group. I attend on behalf of the school board. Those meetings are um, if someone wants to come with me online, it's uh, first Tuesday of the month. Uh, this and the next one will be on November 4th. So there may be more information to share with you after that. Though I I as a rule don't send out notes after those meetings unless it's something directly pertaining to um district business, but it's a fantastic and worthwhile use of your time. Um great. Um great. Moving on. Uh discussion the EPO February 2026 levy. >> Yeah. And I'm going to call Cassie into this conversation. On November 13th,

023the board will see a resolution uh asking for approval to put that on the ballot in February. It has to be into the county by uh December 12th. Uh so we're working on that and uh Cassie is taking the lead. She has a rundown of all of the steps and I'm going to ask her to uh share that with you so you know what we're working on. Uh the major punchline on this is that there will be uh it's a renewal le so the tax impact is that it maintains it doesn't add to >> um so like said um there'll be a resolution at the next board meeting so it's just kind of giving some up information to know what's coming. Um next week Peter and I are going to meet to take the needed

024steps to appoint committee members. Um I'm also working u with our attorney um Lee and he has sent me some language and some things that are prepped. So we've um got all of that ready to kind of go and have him review once we fill in the pieces that we need to. But um really our goal is to align with what has happened in the past like she said continuation. Um so really over the next couple of weeks I'll be watching for any updates that come out on OSPI. they did recently update CPI and we're just going to make sure that that doesn't get updated again and then um just working through to make final determinations on what we want our projected enrollment to look like. We know it's declining so we want to make

025sure that we're accounting for that. Um is limited by how much we can collect based on the enrollment. So the goal would also be to make sure that we're holding steady making it that continuation. Um but having a little bit of a buffer where we're asking for more than we can actually collect in case something were to change um during the legislative session, we won't collect more than we're entitled to. So just make making sure we have capacity to collect. If for example we got an enrollment bump or they upped the amount per student, so on. If you don't have that capacity built in and those things happen, you'd have to go back to the voters. Um, so building in that capacity. Can you can you just highlight the committee that you're talking about? >>

026Yeah, there's I think some community engagement. I'll be honest, this is my first uh committee. So, um, like I said, Peter and I are going to sit down and kind of look at what has been done in the past, make sure that we follow up on that. So, apologies for not having that ready. >> No, that's fine. I I didn't mean to put you on the spot. So, essentially, there are two different committees, so I don't want to confuse them. And there's an external committee of people because we cannot use any school resources to promote the vote. Uh a positive vote. You can promote the vote using school resources. We want everybody to vote and have their voice heard. Get out the vote. Yes. Um typically uh folks in the community um will go out

027and have their voice be heard as to how they feel about the levy. So that's a group of folks that'll be on a committee to do that. You also need a procon committee. And so we need to look for people who will write a pro statement about the levy and a con statement about the levy that goes into the voters pamphlet. So that is also a requirement. Um so that'll happen. I just I wanted the board to be able to have conversation about this um so that when we come back on the 13th, you're ready with your decision around what you'd like to do um in terms of the levy. As you know, this is a huge part of the ongoing budget. The other thing boards uh in my experience have done is they will

028consider uh resolution of the board to support the levy if they are so inclined. So that that happen as well, which allows you to go on record as to whether or not you support the levy. >> And given the um large administrative turnaround that's happened since the past levy, do we have a solid blueprint as to how we proceed for or how we proceeded in the past to make this easier? >> Uh there is you mean a solid blueprint on what making what easier? who made me which committees who typically volunteers to do this. >> I'm sure that there are folks in the community who know that information. And so, yeah, they're not starting from scratch. >> But again, we can't people people on payroll here cannot participate in that. >> Correct. >> I understand.

029I'm just making sure there's some kind of guidance. >> Just let's just be clear. >> Okay. >> People on payroll can participate on their own time. Correct. The key here is no school resources can be used to either say vote yes or vote no. You can't uh lobby folks to vote in a particular way. You can lobby folks to vote. You can share all of the information about the levy. You can share how the levy uh is used, what it supports in the district, and so on. Um it's really the the clear line is you can't tell people how to vote. So, we'll get more information to you. The most important thing for the board to know is really about there will be a resolution. You need to in order for a resolution to go

030on the ballot and be voted on by the people, it must be approved by the board. So, that will come to you November 13th for your consideration. uh depending on how the board votes. If you if you vote yes, you want it on the the February ballot, then we will move forward and put it on the February ballot. If you vote no, um then we won't uh understanding full well that this is probably a five or six million of your total budget. >> Question. When you say we can't um like tell people which way to vote, like can students be like this is what we want? >> So again, if you're not using school resources, you can tell people anything you want. >> You can't use a school phone. You can't use your school uh

031email. You can't use school paper to make posters, right? You have to be completely outside of school. You can talk to anybody you want. You can say whatever you want. Nobody is saying you can't speak to your friends at school. It's just that you cannot school use school resources. You in particular because you're school uh kind of school leaders, right? And certainly the board and any paid staff um we have less control over what students do. You have a Facebook account. Sorry, I know Facebook's old, but whatever. >> You know what I mean? on your social media platforms. [laughter] >> I [snorts] didn't say what was the original one. MySpace. I didn't [laughter] >> anyway. Okay. Thank you. >> Uh anything any other questions on the on the EPNL? >> Okay. >> Uh discussion of

032a new policy 3425 accommodating students with adrenal insufficiency. >> Yeah, this is one of those somebody must have had a child or a relative at the state level who must have had some kind of an issue. That's all I can say about this because we accommodate students with any kind of medical issue with an individualized health plan. This one is a new policy calling specifically uh adrenal insufficiency out as something requiring an individualized health plan. So, the policy affirms what we already do, but it is a compliance policy to make sure um we're make sure we have it in place. We are uh making sure that the nurses are aware and if there are any concerns with the policy as it's written, we'll bring it back to you next time. This is a first reading.

033So, I hope you have any questions about that. Um, moving on, an update on uh policy 5010, non-discrimination and affirmative action. Amy Cesar, please. So, this is kind of a partner to the policy that we passed related to student harassment and discrimination a couple months ago, I believe. Um, we realized that this policy had not been updated since 2011. Uh, a lot of the laws change. There have been a lot of updates to language usage, etc. So, this really is bringing our existing policy 15 years into the future and um adding actually some very important language related to what does discriminatory harassment consist of, what does it look like, and how do we how do we respond? Um, and other than that, it really is just bringing bringing the policy up to date. questions. Um,

034do you feel as if the kind of current climate has impacted the shape of this policy? >> Um, I think that well, frankly, I was at the school law conference a week ago and One of the things that they were talking about is really important to review your policies around discrimination, harassment um and make sure that they are compliant legally um because of the climate so that we don't put ourselves behind any welfare questions. >> But you I guess >> I don't I don't see something. No, I've got it. Has not been deleted. >> No, it's that was the thing I was looking for actually. So, >> are you the compliance officer? >> Mhm. >> One of them Catherine has too. >> Any other questions on this item? >> Uh, moving on to the decision

035section. Um, we are starting with school improvement plan approval. Um, so the board uh was able to workshop tonight uh around the school improvement plans and and we reviewed all four of these about an hour and a half's worth of time prior to this meeting and um it's required that the district have school improvement plans and that the board acknowledges it acknowledges them. So that's what this is about for school plan approval. And Stephanie, I'm not sure if you have anything to add to that. >> No, it just that um there's a requirement to actually approve the plans and I'm not sure that we've actually been doing that for many years. We have the conversations about all of that. Um and this is especially important because right now Shitakqua is one of the schools for

036improvement and it's a requirement for one of the pieces we have to submit to the state to say that yes, the has been officially approved by the board. >> So question, is this a first reading? Do we do >> motion? It's [clears throat] a motion to approve. It's what I was trying to figure out. So it would be a motion to approve the four school improvement plans. >> Um at this time, I'd like to ask for a motion to approve the uh four school improvement plans as presented. I second. You'd like to make a motion. >> Oh, I thought No, I'd like to ask for a motion. >> Well, I'm sorry. That's okay. >> Um uh I would like to make a motion to approve the four schools uh school improvement plans as uh we

037reviewed in our session. >> Great. Can I get a second, please? >> I uh all those in favor of approving the school improvement plans. I I >> Any opposed? Okay. Uh, this improvement plans are approved. Thank you very much, Stephanie, for uh guiding us through that earlier. Um, all right. Um, at this time uh we um have it's been a request from a board member to reorganize uh on one um point uh to relieve Miss Woodard from her duties as the LED representative. Um branch has expressed a lot of interest and engagement on that front and so she's going to take over that role for Martha. She would need to be. So you Okay, you have to >> step that. You say >> no, that's fine. I'm just laying the groundwork. Now we got >>

038So now at this time, I'd like to ask for a motion. >> Nope. You want to ask for any nominees? >> Oh, are there any? Oh, >> are there any nominees for legislative repres? >> It's not a done deal. Anybody is would anybody like to propose a nominee for the legislative representative? >> I'd like to nominate. All right. Do I hear any Oh, >> you have to ask three times. >> This is like something in the Bible. [laughter] >> Don't you do that for president? >> We will. Okay. Any [laughter] other nominees? >> Can I hear any other nominees for the role of legislative representative? And a third times a charm. Would anyone like to make a nomination for the legislative representative of the board? Interesting. We only have one >> a roll call vote

039>> now. I'd like to do a roll call vote for legislative representative. >> So many thoughts here. Um uh let's start with you, Miss Woodard. >> I [clears throat] I want to uh approve. [laughter] >> I vote for me. >> I I >> I No. >> [laughter] >> I like my I believe we now have a correct >> majority of the board. >> You asked me to help. >> No, I I know [laughter] we've never done it this way, so we don't know. Thank you so much. >> Thank you. >> When we reorganize in December, we'll go through this. It'll be it'll be >> Stephanie's favorite part of the night. I should loves this part. >> Uh thank you everyone. Peter, please make note that we voted unanimous >> and it was a roll call

040vote. >> It was a roll call vote. It was great. I handled it like a pro. >> Yeah. >> Who was our previous legislative >> and she wasn't like we didn't uh eject her from that [laughter] resigned. >> Yeah. I was not drop kicked to [laughter] and actually uh in all seriousness the legislative rep there are things coming up around legislative priorities that require engagement from each school board. So um >> but I hear you're going to have a handful. >> Yeah. >> Thank you for your willingness to step into that role for your enthusiasm and interest. Uh, moving on. Uh, resolution number 825, study and survey. Cassie, back to you. >> Yes. So, uh, we are working with Mckinstry, Integress, and STV on our, um, capital levy. And so, part of the work that

041Mckinstry is doing is, um, the study and survey. And we were able to apply for a grant, um, through the state, which we were awarded, which is $26,000. and they just like to have the documentation that shows that the board was aware that we were applying for those funds. And so that's what this resolution does so that we can meet those grant requirements, make sure we can receive that funding and use it um towards that work that they're doing for us, >> which the board approved as you know. So this helps the credit cost. >> Outstanding. >> Do we need a roll call on this one? >> No, you do not. >> But I do need a vote. >> You do. Uh on resolution number 825, the study and survey as presented by uh the

042capable and outstanding cases. Uh can I get um uh sorry a motion? >> A motion to approve the resolution. Thank you so much. I've set the apple. >> I I move to approve resolution 825. >> Thank you. Can I get a second, please? >> I second. >> Thank you. All those in favor? >> I. >> Any opposed? Lovely. Resolution 825 passes unanimously. Now on to policy uh payroll deductions. Come, please. Uh this you've seen uh before. Again, this is just getting us making sure that we're compliant. Um and Amy is here and if there are any uh questions around this leave sharing um we have added those who would be eligible for leave sharing should they need it. >> Are you doing sharing or payroll deductions? >> I'm sorry. payroll deduction. >> You got them

043reversed. >> Um, >> this is le sharing. >> I have the wrong one up there. Yep. Yep. Fantastic. Backing up a minute. looking at. Oh, it still is 5313. >> Yes. >> Uh, payroll deductions. Uh, can I get a motion to approve policy 5313 payroll deductions as written? >> Motion to approve 5313. Favor deductions. >> Thank you, Miss Adams. Can I get a second, please? Thank you, River. All those in favor? >> Any opposed? >> Great. Uh, no opposition. The uh policy 5313 passes. um 3241 student discipline. Uh you've seen this one before and uh principal shared it with staff and we have at least one principal representative and certainly if you have any questions on student discipline um I'd be happy to take them or John can help you out. >> Were there any

044concerns from your staff John? Uh, no. discipline is always a topic that engenders good conversation and um but in terms of this policy and the way that it functions and um would impact our students um staff were interested in talking about other parts of the discipline policy or how we're supporting students through progressive discipline and healthy boundaries um in other ways but not pertinent to this policy. >> Thank you. Any questions? Then can I uh get a motion to approve 3241, the student discipline policy? >> Motion to approve. Thank you very uh can I get a second, please? >> Second. >> Thank you, Jess. All those in favor? >> Any opposed? >> Thank you very much. 3241 student discipline passes unanimously. All right. This is a second opportunity for anyone in the public to make

045a public comment at this time. Is anybody interested in making public comment at this time? Thank you. Uh superintendent report, please. >> Okay. I just want to do a quick uh shout out to all of the leaders who helped the board to go through the school improvement plan. They did a nice job. It was u well set up and thanks to Stephanie for uh organizing it and leading it. Um, I also want to take an opportunity to say thank you to the leadership again because the last two weeks I had a scheduled time out of the district for these last two weeks and it was supposed to be quiet and it was certainly was not quiet. Um, we had some challenges that came up and I specifically want to thank um Stephanie and Katherine who

046stepped in um and took over the role that should have been the superintendent and they did a great job. So, I appreciate their leadership in doing that. Um, wanted to also remind the board, you know, that we're all going to WASDA, including our student representatives and >> everyone's, >> I'm assuming you're like all the >> Yeah, we're all going the whole team. >> We're all going. >> Oh, yeah. Yep. And we're all going to board boot camp together. [laughter] >> That's exactly because that's what's we're that's what we're doing. We're learning together. We will learn about he's calling out for the president and asking for three times and we're fine. [laughter] Um anyway, one of I'm going to shout out for for uh something that I'm doing at that particular con conference is that I'm

047part of a presentation on transitioning a new superintendent uh with my prior district and how we work through transitioning a new superintendent and here I am doing it again. So, uh, just a plug if you want to, uh, see me do a presentation with the previous school board. Uh, anyway, um, the other thing I wanted to call your attention to is that the leadership team will also join the board down at WASDA for social time. Um, again in the idea of team building and trust building. Uh and then on December 11th uh which is a board workshop, we will do a retreat together again to talk more about um the rubric that there are some as a subcommittee working on subcommittee of admin and board members and superintendent. Um so we'll have that opportunity. Uh

048and also wanted to remind anyone who has the desire to attend uh who didn't get to go to their prom when they were in high school. [laughter] Uh on November 15th, the Vashan Schools Foundation Gala is prom themed complete with bineir or corsage or both or neither. Um anyway, I I will be attending with my spouse. So if anybody else plans to go, um it'll it should be a fun evening. I don't know what this O space is, but it sounds a little >> Oh, yeah. That's great. >> And there's food and reserves and dancing and sorry, I don't know if it's underage or anyway, that's it uh for that. I do have one more thing to talk to you about and that is your facilities work that is ongoing. Um it's I meet with

049them every Thursday. There are folks in the district doing um various things. Integris who are the architects uh they visited the sites. They certainly spent a lot of time here on Friday the 17th. They're going to be doing more visits this week and next week to develop the big picture strategy for the potential for a bond. Um but there also is the ongoing levy work that is happening. And so those plans are underway right now. a leadership team for the district is the steering committee at this point, but we will be broadening that group. Um, as we get ready to present um for a bond, the goal is still that in February or so, you will get the uh facilities plan, the 10-year facilities plan, and the buildings condition survey. The exciting piece of this,

050it's all exciting, but right now um there's a solar grant that we're targeting and a group of folks are involved in that and McKinstry's taking the lead because they've done so many of them, but we have community members who are helping. We have letters of support that are happening and uh this thing's got legs. So, thanks John for that process. Um, yeah. So, that's a lot of update for somebody who was out for a couple weeks, but there you have it. Superintendent's update. Thank you. Um, anybody from the board? Um, uh, I have something I wanted to share, but I'm happy to, uh, wait before I do that. Any remarks from board members? >> Well, I want to thank the PTO for the harvest festival. I hear it was absolutely amazing. that gets raved about

051it and I just appreciate all the hard work that went into that specific programming. And I think CPAC even had a nice quiet space for the kids who it was just a little too much for so they could wind down. And I love seeing our communities come together to really foster it for all of our children. >> Thank you. >> Yeah, just very briefly to echo what Joe and just to thank you for facilitating that and putting it together really um and also building leadership and district leadership in terms of the data, the information, the approaches, the strategies and then the questions that allowed us to dive into that and explore that was very grateful. Um, I just want to say as someone who has experienced what a school day is like, um, I so

052appreciate the leadership showing up and and doing such good work with us. I know they probably didn't have a choice, but at the same time, I appreciate that extra time that you all spend um to help us know what's going on. Um, I just wanted to share that um, you know, the um, Chris Rectal, the superintendent of public instruction, holds a monthly webinar um, that I have attended um, at least for the past year and I find them unbelievably helpful. Sometimes a little overwhelming, but mostly helpful. Um and one of the things that um Chris shared on the last webinar was information data about um birth rates, headc counts at various milestones including K and 12 um uh things like SAT scores and ACT and other sort of pieces of data. And overwhelmingly as a

053state we we do very very well um uh in terms of our our testing and kids taking the SAT and ACT and things like that. I do think um and this is not anything that I think needs to be presented um but they showed this slide about births in Washington state over time and it's not going to get better anytime soon. in the enrollment realities. Um there's a 10,000 just slightly over 10% drop in births in Washington um state from 2016 till um I think the last year they have here is 2023. So that basically he said, you know, buckle up, make realistic predictions, budget accordingly. Um that we will maybe still continue to see larger graduation cohorts. Um that is sort of a remnant from, you know, stronger birth rates, but that our enrollment

054in kindergarten will continue to um go down and that's happening with with some exceptions, but largely um across the board in Washington state. So um I think this data is interesting. I don't think these slides are on the OSPI website. If anybody wants to see them, I'm happy to share them. It's not a secret. Um, but I I wish that Chris's monthly webinars were recorded because we have such a um a capable and clear leader um steering the ship at the state level and I for one find myself um very very grateful after each one of those. So um thank you to Chris Real and his rapidly dwindling team um for the work that they're doing. Hey, since Stephanie uh along with me, but Stephanie is doing a lot of work around our enrollment because

055of the board's questions last time and then we'll be getting together information to share. Um it's interesting. Um I think we didn't really make any commitments to anything at this. No one's on the hook for anything coming out of this meeting. I guess uh I guess that's it. It's 6:52 and I adjourn this meeting. [applause]
