002easy does someone have their YouTube on I'm ready Reagan thank you do you need someone to check it Jodie no but I'm hearing it I'm hearing everything repeated as if someone's watching YouTube anybody else getting bad audio sounds good sounds good hey Jodie you just say when you're ready I'm ready just go ahead alright Oh welcome everyone to our June 11th meeting of the Vashon Island School Board and we're gonna go ahead and call our meeting to order and can I get a motion to approve the agenda move I guess a second all in favor aye aye all right so now that brings us right away to public comment and this is wearing Kovac times we read into public record anything that we received before four o'clock today the day of the meeting and so
003I believe we do have a couple items that Slade is gonna read for us right now yeah first of all welcome everybody to the board meeting and thank you for coming this evening and I switch my screens over to my you know we're gonna have the messages you be probably helpful have folks mute while we're doing public comment or when you're not [Music] Jody and Bob would that be possible if you could mute Thanks and Jody looks like thanks e great so the first public comment came in at 332 from rich Lentz he writes very disappointed the high school play field is still locked all high school play fields in Seattle are open and currently being used for play activity including pickup soccer football training drills and running track use there is nothing mentioned in
004any restrictions phase one or two when states play fields are to be closed do I have to reiterate the fact that this facility was rebuilt with a tax levy and has been unavailable for public use for too long your decisions are jeopardizing the success of any future levies signed Richard Lenz the second public comment that is came in community 59 and I he this is from Steve Ellison he writes hi Jody please have this read tonight thanks Steve Ellison and that gives us phone number I'll open up the word document titled on George Floyd I wrote a more detailed explanation of background of what I hope the ISD will respond to the George Floyd's murder but to keep this brief and focused it boils down to this there's a series of bullet points the first
005one respond meaningfully the second bullet point do this by assessing your sphere of influence and resolve in quotation marks not here and in quotation marks what we will do we will do what you reasonably can third bullet point introspectively study and understand the issue is it a policing police department race minority white or other privilege issue is it an individual societal issue is it a combination of these how are we contributing to the problem bullet point regarding the murder and the Minneapolis Police Department understand did rank-and-file tolerate troubling signs of bad behavior by their peers did supervisors and managers choose to overlook troubling signs of bad did unions protect the bad actors did the mayor choose to overlook troubling signs of unflattering facts in BISD understand do rank-and-file teachers tolerate poor performance by their peers
006do supervisors and managers choose to overlook troubling signs of poor performance does the union protect the poor performers does the superintendent choose to overlook troubling signs of unflattering facts societally bullet plane do government organizations hide and deflect attention from their problems does one government organization hiding its problems reinforce a standard for other and all government organizations to hide their problems bullet point in the words of a black student speaking to school administrators and directors a few years ago coat a shoe marks you are part of the problem understand how and do better in quotation marks bullet point vis D can create capacity for other school districts and police forces to confront their problems by confronting their own weaknesses problems and misinformation campaigns that concludes the public comments that we received before four o'clock today regarding
007our Richard lintels letter the decision around field access is really the bachelor party district right I cannot share that in my super intensive work okay great I just want to make sure that was clarified yeah Regan you're still muted sorry it's a mime it's a mime cast here I said with no further ado we will then move on to Slade Superintendent report please go ahead and now you're muted you're muted I'm totally I'm kidding on that I'm sorry I was I'm not kidding afterwards yes all right I'm just calling your leadership ringing you're following your leadership are you welcome everybody once again I am going to open up the superintendence report with Al and acknowledgment and even more so in these times I humbly make a landing knowledge meant I'd like to recognize and acknowledge
008the indigenous people of this land the Puyallup tribe of Indians and we meet on their lands and at this meeting once again we pay respect respect to the Puyallup tribe of Indians and to their elders past present and emerging I'd also like to pay my respects to all those out there who are suffering during this time part of my superintendents report is to share some some recent learnings of my own around racial justice and racial equity and I was with two members of my board over the in our weekly meeting and I had sent some resources out and I received some really valuable feedback around my own white privilege and how how I wasn't stating that what I was sharing was actually what I had at what I had listened and learned from the black
009community and and so I just want to reiterate that as we work through these issues and work for a better a better tomorrow that we understand you know our position and as and we try to listen more talk less and and learn more about where we are in our current struggle I shared some information with our district and the board earlier in the week but there are three activities to demonstrate support for our black community this weekend I'm sure there'll be more but tomorrow there is a black lives matter March in Seattle at one o'clock and you can look up the details online tomorrow evening here in our own community there is a March for just that will be starting over park7 I mean that the I believe is a theater at 7:30 and then
010on Sunday there is a teachers March organized by a teacher in Tacoma that will be starting a stadium high school at 12 o'clock so I would encourage all those who were able and if they are safely able to to consider participating in events that support our black community or as I suggested to our staff in the district if you're not able to participate maybe you can spend some time learning more about their experiences and how we are here today so this month is also Pride Month so June 28th of 1969 there was the stove the June Pride Month is is to commemorate the Stonewall riots and this is still the Stonewall was a club a gay club in it was raided and the law enforcement responded violently and so there were riots then and in
011support of the elbe LGBTQ community normally you would see in our district signs and and and we would see maybe some marches and demonstrations in our in our own community but this month since we're enclosure weary we're not seeing that so I put information on Facebook and I wanted to make sure that I acknowledge that this month June is Pride Month in in our in our in our it's national pride month and we want to celebrate that as well on to graduation quickly Danny Rock sent out another email today hopefully everybody knows that this is happening on on Saturday and there's gonna be a car parade I was just actually text a picture of my own niece who is in her own car parade in Long Beach she's graduating from Polytechnic high school that high
012school has 5,200 students and so they're graduating class is just a little bit bigger but having very similar experiences so but I'm super excited about our our own graduation I'm seeing a lot more engagement a lot more excitement from parents and families and students and they received some goodie bags today with our own bash on high school graduation class of 2020 masks and they'll be wearing when they walk across the stage tomorrow night of course with very strict health protocols put in place the parade starts at four o'clock sharp from Harbor school and will make its way to the high school where the limited ceremony will take place parents are allowed to take pictures from their cars but they won't be able to exit their vehicles and of course there'll be professional photos available for
013appearance as well at 6:00 p.m. a pre-recorded virtual graduation ceremony will will begin I folks will be able to watch that basically at their at their leisure and they'll be able to rewind and and and and take a look at that there are some surprises in that video that were edited in just recently so I encourage everybody to to tune into that I will say that after oh gosh 10 or so takes trying to record yourself in a meaningful way on a camera for a virtual graduation is difficult and the I am NOT a great speaker on video nor even in this situation but I'm still humbled by our our students and the accomplishments that they've made I feel like many teachers and administrators I feel kind of kind of robbed a little bit of
014the opportunity to get to know them a little bit better the seniors that I did have a chance to get to know to some degree I was just super excited about what their future looks like and and I heard governor Inslee speak after his experience talking with some juniors and he remarked that our future is in very good hands and I concur that 1,000% now on Duke onda first of all let me go go ahead and go back are there any questions kind of regarding graduation or anything happening with our racial justice efforts or okay I just want to I just wanted to I just wanted to again thank Danny and the high school and all the people involved in putting together this graduation I know it's it's not the traditional one and there's some
015brief about missing that but I think they have put together something that will be fun and meaningful at the end of the day and I just wanted to thank everyone for their creativity and doing the best we can in a tough situation and to our seniors for being so resilient and for you know infusing it with fun even though it's not what they had hoped it would be when they were starting in high school mm-hmm yeah thank you great okay then moving on to kind of our koba 19 update I have a lot of a lot of information to share so feel free I'm not watching the screen I'm looking at my report right now so if you have a question please just speak up I won't see your hand raised if you're if you're
016looking to pause and but I'll I'll pause kinda after each of one of these and ask if you have any questions and so OSPI guidance came out today as I expected the June 8th deadline which we were promised to get the guidance the guidance did not show up on June 8th but did come today and I was in a meeting so I did not have an opportunity to to watch mr. Rick doll give a press conference on the on the OSPI guidance I think my initial takeaways and what I've heard from administrators who have been engaged in this work with us for quite some time now there was really nothing new in the guidance there were in in fact it was more about some just broad brought the broad strokes and in our district is
017going to have flexibility to implement our next version of continuous learning or face-to-face instruction as long as we operate within the Department of Health guidelines and those seem very firm but still not indicating any type of student to staff ratios or any any specific requirements other than kind of equitable we'll be wearing masks and that will be doing health screenings for all staff parents and students and visitors as we enter the buildings will also be establishing a lot of details around how students travel in the building how teachers travel to students and all those details will be worked out the OSP guidance also did give some indication about modeling and it was kind of exactly what we had been what our reopening team has been pondering are looking at in terms of split or rotating
018schedules as one option phasing in students like an elementary for four days and then you know secondary students two days or one day rotating and then there's just the continuous learning 2.0 and when we speak about continuous learning 1.0 you have to think about where at one we're in 1.0 right now the first version and the second version would basically enhance our our system we would all be on some type of learning management system it would probably more be more synchronous in terms of schedules times of classes office hours so a lot more you know parameters around and scheduling for for students if we were to go to 2.0 and the continuous learning 2.0 is not an option that's that anyone would be looking forward to but it is the fallback if we have any
019type of resurgence and Co bid or if we have confirmed cases you know from students or staff so and if if we need to shut down and go to a continuous learning model or remote learning model and we want to make sure that we have as many of those details worked out as possible so basically an improved version of what we're doing now but a lot of people feel like we've done a lot of the heavy lifting already and that we would that we could we could make that leap not easily but it does seem very doable and I just want to say that you know in all this pondering and all the guidance it's been exciting to work with a wonderful group of leaders it's been exciting to work with about a wonderful group
020of staff leaders the opening of schools team which is my next bullet point is has just been an incredible group to work with and we sure we have some communication glitches and but overall I'm learning a lot already from from this team and and and how they're sharing their experiences during during the closure and really what are they what are their hopes and wishes for the you know for when we start up in the fall the reopening of schools team this recently sent out surveys and and we had just an overwhelming response from family staff and students we had 409 families or individual respondents for families complete the survey we had 126 staff so we have a little over 200 staff I've never seen a staff survey that had that much engagement and and then
021we had 279 students for grades 6 through 12 respond to the survey and that has been probably the highlight of the of the surveys because I can probably most relate to staff and families and so see you know hearing that student voice come forward and what they would like to see moving forward has been exciting the reopening of schools team we did kind of have a small glitch I guess we're misunderstanding where some families we don't know how many it's hard to judge or hard to understand in terms of when people are using social media to communicate you just don't know you know the exact numbers but out of you know from the 409 families some families reported that they misunderstood the rating the rating system for the for the modeling and we do have
022Reece mission and editing capabilities but we didn't have we wanted to be nonnamous so we didn't ask for emails in order to refit submissions you have to have an email collection so that they can give email a link to make any edits on their on their on their surveys so we're learning about Google Forms and their limitations but also where they are where they're really strong it's right now I'm considering re sending out a survey limited to the models I feel like we're probably gonna take one of the models off the table because of the overall overwhelming kind of two thumbs down on an ampm schedule it doesn't work for commuters and overwhelmingly it didn't work for for other families so we'll probably resend a survey it'll it'll reflect that that kind of eliminating that
023option but that should go out tomorrow and then we'll we'll give families one more option to look at that and then the team will come back together on the 18th I'll show the guidance with the team as well tomorrow if they haven't already accessed it through maybe Seattle Times or something oh I'll share that with them and it'll give us time to digest you kind of the ramifications I think the most important part the role for this team is to really really let the district know what our priority what their priorities are and around the models and health concerns and learning concerns the the team is probably not going to do so much of the the operational work the details I'm going to leave most of that work to my principals in our district office
024leadership team and facilities and maintenance and our directors but collecting that voice is as imperative if we're going to move forward in a meaningful way what other questions made that maybe the board I have a few more other bullet points but I think this might be a good time to stop and ask you if there are questions from the board around the reopening of schools the efforts the team OSPI guidance I have read it one and a half times so I might be able to shake loose a couple details there if you're curious I did have one question about the 2.0 prospect if that became necessary what platform would be you for that come and educate service I presume we're not talking about buying a system of her own because that's cost prohibitive was there
025like something online you would be able to use relatively cheaply or for free or what's the thought for sharing out it would just be the Google classroom stuff just yeah you're pointing right in the right direction it would be Google classroom the other learning management systems of the states would support districts using our Schoology canvas and blackboard and does require yeah those systems are probably in the 20 to 45 thousand and up range in order to purchase and then the most significant hurdle is actually not the cost well that's a significant hurdle but the most significant hurdle would be training staff as a person who's implemented a learning management system similar at my implemented Schoology it's a three year process well even even Google classroom is going to be a challenge for us certainly not
026for those teachers who are comfortable in how are they using that but we're in a much better place right now and that is the most common vehicle for a for our staff and I anticipate using that okay so there it is the pieces I've seen in Google classroom just as a parent are you know it's hard for me to see the whole comprehensive toolkit that's probably there so that's areas to grab that yeah really Google classroom is a place to you know for example you can see all your students courses there you can go in there and most parents want to see what's due when it's due what was the what was how are they scored and so the so it's usually around grades and the whatever the assessment or the project or the assignment
027is the next kind of fit Google just you can you can use it to share videos and assign and you're kind of right but it relies on teachers to generate the assignments it doesn't come with a package that has assignment learning built-in that you can roll out in there no no but what yeah right and there isn't a learning management system that does that some of the homeschooling staff I'm familiar with looks like that so that's why again just confused and curious you know in Google classroom I don't know how it syncs with some of our new curriculum and text in terms of online but there's kind of what we call kind of single key access or single single sign-in and so students and my former experience were able to use Schoology to log into
028all of their digital curriculum and with a single sign-on they were able to see all their assignments you know all their assessments lots of learning content and then you know their progress towards me you know to meeting the standard the the caveat is what's really nice is within any of these systems once a teacher uses materials they can they can become banked basically and so they you will they won't have to recreate them for the following year they should be able to roll over you know kind of basically their their classrooms from year to year and so you know leave that you know is that once once you are set up your your from that point on you're basically finding you know your material is in querque just like you would be you know you
029think about a the old kind of file cabinet that housed all the units you know that teacher would use throughout the year and they might put in new information resources and you know kind of weed out irrelevant or out-of-date resources and that's that would be similar to what we would like to see what Google classroom or again any learning management system but we will be I don't see any staff members who would say let's let's do Schoology now the you've kind of spent three months in closure and more immersed in Google classroom okay thank you yeah we have and we have you know so much teacher expertise on Google classroom and that's that's really where the that's the best strategy moving forward is is you know teachers teaching teachers they they understand the nuances the
030the pitfalls and the opportunities now I had a question on have you given any thought it just kind of occurred to me a little bit few days ago that Milan students how we manage them coming back and forth while maintaining distancing and all that is is you foresee increased expenses for us not in any of the models that were that we're currently contemplating you know if they're coming two days a week or if they're coming four days a week as an elementary student or you know rotating in some type of rotating way like increased supervision on the fairies is what I'm worried about no no in fact we probably a lot fewer fewer students and typically we have one very monitor and that would actually be you kind of lowering that ratio or I would
031anticipate it okay like spring it some question yeah I have to admit that I I plan to but I just haven't had a real opportunity to sit down and review I did quickly glanced over the notes that you shared from the committee but haven't seen any of the Rexall stuff yet my question is if we do have to continue with some online school how does like the Common Core fit in and and academic rigor or teaching the kids with live zooms versus just giving them assignments and using that live zoom time or Google meetup whatever just you know for kids who have questions I I know we're balancing equity whoopsy sorry you can still see me um okay um equity issues with you know if I'm just curious I wonder how do we are we
032gonna is it going to look like it has been this last few months or are we gonna try to teach more material at the high school level right again like I said Oh probably more synchronous so resembling a a more resembling a school day basically okay don't know exactly what that would would look like so our you know it would be more structure more Moore's more scheduled you know time during the week and of course and then you have the face to face what's missing now obviously is any face to face and so it's hard for us to actually picture whoa how would it look like if it was enhanced just for two days so of my students that my two students had just two days with their teachers versus zero days and so I
033think we're gonna see a significant increase in the guidance it there's ranked all-points two opportunities to really examine the Common Core and and really consider what are the the key standards and essential standards and to also consider our our grading practices and especially through an equity lens so much of the guidance is centered on equity which I'm very pleased to see in the guidance points to having only four days of the week and one day reserved for first-half PD but also one day reserved for a small group instruction or groups who may be you know the most vulnerable or who may be you know maybe may need some extra you know consideration or extra help and so I think it's a it's again it's kind of a time to reimagine what schools look like in
034just in some limited studies around Kipp schools and Paul tuff and hoping you know some other researchers more time helps students learn more so in terms of increasing student achievement longer days and more time spent in our in our system actually helps and so raise student achievement so we would like to see some differentiation around folks getting access to to you know more academic supports on that fifth day um I watched Chris tariqats presentation today I thought it was pretty good mm-hmm first seemed clear to me that the guidance and objective of the state was that all students go to the school every day and that these models that were contemplating are really still plan B either if the local or state health department changes the recommendations or if we have a flare-up in our
035own community or something like that but that really the objective and guidance was to push towards five days a week school in the building all students at the same time riding the school bus coming in with the caveat of wearing masks and and distancing which presents some logistical challenges of course but I was that's that's what I took away from the the presentation that's it's interesting because there's and I appreciate what you're sharing that with me there was nothing in the guidance that talked about five days a week or wanting students back five days a week you know kind of until we're like in a face for the you know scenario so I mean there are you know in the phased in model it talked he speaks to having you know students back in the
036building as much as possible when it's safely but right now there's there's no there's no modeling that he's presented that indicates any type of five-day possibility now it's interesting I was a little surprised on watch it about how sort of emphatic that direction appeared in the end and then the QA of people are asking a clarification on that not well and it may be quite frankly that we will see some districts in the state because of their rate of you know exposure or rate of incidences and rate of deaths would be so low that they would be you know they would be in a phase for a situation where not only can people not only would be people and be able to attend concerts but people would be able to you know students will be
037able to attend school and so where there isn't anybody in our region that's gonna that's anticipating and and that's a it's an interesting contemplation because how fast could we move to a five day a week we can move that pretty fast so but that's not what what any I don't think there's gonna be any teams that are going to be you know hold out any hope for a five day a week situation and again we're you know we're just we're right now we're working through our own our own responses in the survey data it's a lot to move through I'm just sharing with you if you're trying to read 409 comments about child care and I can read 200 of them and I can tell you kind of I'm not sure what else to what
038what the other 200 are going to tell me that I kind of haven't heard already so kind of just as an example most people believe that child care is difficult here on the island and there's a lot of respondents who majority of the response to say if they don't have child care it will impact their family significantly in terms of work or mental health the whole range so that's going to be seriously considered as we as we you know kind of as the team has an opportunity to look at comments and share and break the next time we get do they will help small breakout sessions so teams will be have an opportunity to actually share their experience and share what they learned from the you know from the from the survey data so that
039then our our leaders can kind of take all that and I can take all that and go and start to identify priorities for us you know but also you know there there may be some subtle nuances to any planning that we will that we'll need to be able to you kind of act responsibly responsibly on Tibet um you know we haven't talked about this so much and it may this may be sort of further down the road but I'm wondering if you have had any conversations with you ifs in terms of fashion on kids and how we can rely on them and I know it's been really limited now just with you know frontline people and you know essential workers and I'm that might because I the trial care thing is so real and really
040really impact people getting back to back to work and being able to pay for food and paying for rent I mean there's you know it's the ripple effect and so I'm kids we need a space yeah right so I'm not yeah I'm just understand that I don't expect an answer I don't want to get into but just to sort of put that thought in there yeah they're they're they're like this with us and be seen yeah that's my takeaway from this we are really gonna lean on our partners yeah I had a conversation with Allison early this week and you know we started kind of brainstorming some ideas about how PCA could support families on that fifth day right when when students won't be and it could be a Monday could be a Wednesday it
041could be a Friday but they will you know they have space they have programming they have artists who want to contribute so we're gonna we're gonna we're gonna look at all possibilities I know we are oh I know it yeah yeah but it that's the exciting part about being on the Ellen is that we have such strong partnerships with with so many of our organizations I think it's really cool that like this this is a moment not only with how schools are but you know as we think about sort of race relations in the world and especially those this is the moment where we are like really it's time for us to shift and see what we can improve and yeah so kind of last I just want to kind of highlight you know the
042the planning moving forward all the superintendent's in the region are gonna meet tomorrow and we'll kind of digest and debrief on the guidance and then llt will meet on Monday we'll do the same and then we'll meet on Thursday with our reopening school of schools team and then I'll have some communication out to families I don't know how tight or technical that communication will be but it'll give them an update on our progress in terms of planning for next year on the last day of school I'm going to end this on a on a kind of a positive note hopefully folks are able to read the Beachcomber today and we're able to access the article on on our teachers it spotlighted teachers from every building Susan reamer spent quite some time on this article highlighting
043the incredible work in that these teachers are you know are able to do in these kind of really unusual times and so I'm going to I can get my screen come on go get out of here and so Amy Holmes arista kill Alex Driscoll Seraphin housekey Lisa Miller and I believe Stewart from the elementary as well we're all highlighted who's subbing for Ashley we're all highlighted in the Beachcomber Nicole I'll let you read it I know we have some retirees that I want to start to recognize and bring on board but we also I know brandy has been out to kind of be up to the top right once we get through with on our retirees so without further ado I believe we're going to be oh and and open Heather Miller sorry you're right
044thanks Lisa so we are going to be recognizing four of our staff who are going to be leaving us you know the contributions they made are incredible I'm superintendents are usually not the ones who we're gonna step up I'm going to leave that to those who know him know them the best but we have Tom Miller who will be who will be retiring and then hold who Tom Miller is one of our custodians and then I'm sorry one of our maintenance folks and then the whole will be retiring she worked primarily with LL students and Colleen Sweeney at the middle school humanities teacher and then barb barb Jensen in the front office at the middle school so I'm going to invite let's see Jody are you are you ready to stream that video from Rebecca
045or should I move to to Greg look at that and then you'll need to get that volume so we're still silent Joey I think you need to unmute yourself yeah that might be it yeah Joey you're you know well while Jodi's trying to kind of do some technical solutions right here why don't we invite Greg Allison the middle school principal to say a few words for the staff that he'll be your kind of sending off to their next adventure thanks for joining us thank Greg yeah yeah I just I'll start with what Colleen and I've I've just really appreciated getting to know Colleen these past years that she's she's been at McMurray she is a thoughtful and dedicated member of our human humanities team and we were having this discussion I said well when were
046you hired and Colleen said that she was hired right after 9/11 and so I felt like we we 9/11 of 2001 I should say and so I said well I think we can round that up to 20 years and she has had a previous career but I so appreciate that that she made the transition to education and I guess what I'll say about Colleen is that I've always observed the way that she she cultivated really a sense of calmness and kindness and gratitude in her classroom that in addition to academics of course but but I just so appreciated that and the way that you when you walked in that classroom you could really feel those things and she made a really a tremendous impact on so many kids over these past year and her collaborative
047and really thoughtful contributions to to our staff have been remarkable too so thank you Colleen for your your great contributions I'm sure your next chapter will be amazing and she's such a such a wonderful member of our team so we'll be we sad to see her go thanks Colleen thank you to the Vashon Island School District Gregg especially you and and all my colleagues coworkers it's been an enriching and rewarding experience so thanks for everything calling we're gonna have to do something in person when when were you when we get to that point yeah I love I'll be retired so my schedule will look a lot different after I will have to ask Colleen about the Sage ceremony she did for our McMurray team one time and it was was amazing mm-hmm that's great did
048you go so much Colleen yeah and I'm Barbara Jenson and I'm not sure if Barbara's on here this evening with us but it's been an honor to work with Barbara for the past 16 years in our McMurray front office as my my partner and I know Barbara has worked for nearly 30 years I think she was hired in 1990 and she served it's a pair of professional and and other roles in our district so such an amazing career and and the three words I've I thought of in thinking about Barbara were poise grace and warmth and she just demonstrated that in the midst of juggling a busy front office for so many years but but you could tell that she cared at the utmost for our kids and she was a mentor for so many
049students and even struggling students over the years and we're gonna miss her Barbara just added a great deal to our staff and when we thank you for your service congratulations I know she has a new grandbaby that she's she's looking forward to spending time with and and I think this is gonna be and again another amazing chapter for her congratulations Barbara you know I just quickly I just have a quick my favorite Barbara story is when I my older son was just started McMurray and you know I've been so trained at Chautauqua to make sure you know to pick them up and you know check them out and you know be you know sign do everything and so I went in and I was like okay so where do they come out and she sort
050of she looked up and she was like you know have you ever seen termites when they are coming out of a stump and they just kind of fly out and I was like yeah actually I have seen that she was like that's what it's like here and so that's my image of like in like most eerie way of seeing all these McMurray students just like fly out like little termites out of the building every day I love that only barb thanks barb thanks barb thank you bar Jodi do you have a do you have that video do you think it'll work I want to go for it give me just a moment all right well she's doing that um I'm gonna recommend maybe we should have done it earlier but I'm gonna recommend that someone
051moved to move Brandis report right after this I believe she has a commitment at 8:00 I moved that will have changed that in the agenda have Brandi come up next let's take a bet all in favor even though you're not a ferryboat yeah okay well it looks like we'll have to maybe push this to the next board meeting for sure and Rebecca wasn't just able to make it this evening so but I think all of us know Anne and her commitment to to our families and certain reall families she was I've got to know her a little bit around our Spanish interns her contributions kind of are just like she's one of those staff members that everybody in the building knows and everybody in the building looks forward to seeing her every day I see
052her hiking on the trails here on Vashon so um you know I kind of know her as a also as a we kind of shared that enthusiasm for for the island and being outdoors so but we'll we'll see Rebecca's comments at the next board meeting when we can figure out how to get the YouTube video to play we had it last time or a week I think we figured out last time but we'll sometimes you just don't know what you need to which button you need to push okay brandy thank you for being here tonight and hopefully we're gonna get you out of here by 8:00 o'clock seemingly Thank You Slade and we have a fairly short report tonight I really wanted to focus primarily on the new maintenance building the last time we spoke
053we had just opened bids and had awarded to Christianson construction we spent the month of March and April really doing all the paperwork so you know submittals and prevailing wage paperwork and Department of Ecology permits and all those things and started on schedule beginning of May as planned they spent made digging footings pouring concrete and stem walls and the slab was poured today all the framing material was delivered today and we'll give that slab a few days to cure and then next week you'll see the bill things start to take shape so so far Christensen has been really good to work with we have I'm not sure how this has happened but we have managed to negotiate all of our alternates that we wanted to get into the project and the total cost has been
054about $10,000 so that was pretty significant that was you know casework in the building it was going from a combination of cement board and metal panels to all metal panels it was taking the roof upgrade so that's been fantastic they've been they've been really really good for us to work with so far we are on schedule and well within budget at this point I included a couple of pictures in the update just so that you can yeah it's picture time again so just a reminder of how our sites laid out and the space allotted for the future transportation building and then again kind of an elevation picture for your perspective of what the building is going to look like the first two top pictures are the footings that we were digging and those three piles
055of dirt that you see on the right really are that that bar that separates the office space from the shop space so that's the little paint booth and a couple of restrooms in our mechanical space and then the next set of pictures I'm not sure why the one on the right didn't show up but that's our footings being formed and then below pouring those footings and stem walls and then you can see the stem walls to the right and it's really taking shape so it's um it's gated off and fenced and locked at this point but if any of you would like to visit I'm usually there on Mondays and would be happy to to get you in and take a look at it so if you'll really start to see it next week it'll
056be it'll be great budget wise we are still tracking on all of our metrics we have a little bit more on island expenditure Bob broken back is the one who will put the septic system in a building I haven't logged that in yet but that'll go up a little bit the next time we see it I also wanted to mention to you tonight that in your consent agenda at the next board meeting there will be a building condition assessment and I think you have seen these over the years as part of the condition as part of the consent agenda and in years past Dave Wilkie or Kevin Dickerson would do those assessments on the OSPI website but every six years were required to have an outside entity do that and it's part of what's called
057the a PP program which says you have to maintain your building in order to be eligible for future state funding and so Miller Hayashi the architect who designs a maintenance building did the assessment for us you'll notice that there's a little drop in the high school and that's primarily related to the exterior condition of the building the the paint that is faded and the soffits that look so bad and we have a summer project planned to clean and bleach all those soffits reseal everything wash the building and repaint and we were able to get warranty coverage on the paint so all of the paint is being supplied at no cost well through John at Ace Hardware and you know combination with the vendor but there was a mistake made in the base that was used
058on that paint which is what's caused the fading so it's really great that that was able to be worked out so that will change in that condition assessment next year and you'll see that bump back up Randy is the soffits a design issue well you know woodstove it's 35 feet in the air are always challenging especially on the weather side of a building but I think that they used a water-based sealer on those soffits and it just hasn't held up at all and so again I worked with Miller Hayashi and with clay who's done easily who's done so much of our painting and we have we're going to use a sickens product that has a 20 year warranty so hopefully in all of our lifetimes on the on the board this we won't have to
059address this again and and the paint should hold up much better as well so that's great yeah good any other questions thank you for your careful attention you know across everything well I certainly enjoy it and it's been really fun to sort of transform all these buildings into into what they are today so thanks okay so much Randy thank you you're welcome thanks Randy thanks a bunch so we're gonna we're gonna go in reverse and so I inadvertently misunderstood of communication from Jody and I apologize it's not jody's fault it's completely mine we do want to recognize Tom Miller who I know / - be here this evening but Kevin's here this evening to speak to Tom's retirement and I'll just share I really didn't have a lot of opportunity to get to know Tom
060and you kind of one of those he seems pretty pretty quiet pretty quiet guy who kind of just gets gets all those jobs done and really doesn't seek the kind of recognition or attention and is very humble so but thank you Tom you know for your contributions over the years and I'll let Kevin speak more directly to his experience with Tom and and those those contributions thanks Kevin evening you're me yep okay sorry on behalf of the facilities team I want to thank Tom Miller for his service his dedication he was a genuinely a very genuine a nice guy and what people don't know may not know is that he was a really big advocate for his workers force team he was definitely behind the scenes turkeying pushing for you know again advocating for the
061facilities team so his communication is definitely missed his dedication to helping our efforts in taking care of the facilities is missed and I wish Tom will and his next chapter in his life and his skill set obviously and what you brought to the team so good luck Tom and thank you thank you Tom thank you Tom you Tom please give our best to him Lisa thank you okay thank you so before we go on to board member remarks was there something about the field closure you wanted to address during a report oh yes part Mike Ovid report thank you we have been working quite regularly with art district and LA not Russia and so we we we do have a we are paying attention actually to the governor's phased-in openings and that phase and opening
062is very clear about where we are or where we have been in phase one once phase two what's once we're in phase two there is a plan by the Park District in our you know implying collaboration with us that the the fields will be open to groups of five or less because that's that is what phase two indicates I've had a couple community reached out to me about that and there is confusion around who makes those decisions and certainly Park District makes those decisions with us but they in our Commons agreement they are responsible for those facilities outside of school hours and so I would encourage rich lense or any other community member to to contact Park District if they would like any clarification around or if they have any questions around access to those
063facilities I can't speak to Seattle or other high schools or why they make the decisions they make although all I know is that we are following the guidance set out by the governor according to his phases and if we're in phase 1 or 1.5 I believe that we will be making believe a move soon to open up the facilities but again it's not us opening them up it will be the Park District opening them up but hopefully move to a regular schedule where folks can access those and access them safely there's always the concern about hygiene and cleaning the gate when families come in who's you know are they are they wearing masks when they when they come in and so you know there's a lot of details to be worked out in terms of
064whose responsibility it is to make sure that those facilities are safe for our community in our community quite frankly has done an amazing job keeping everybody safe and we want to continue down that path exercise caution and but at the same time be responsive when we are able to be more open I'm Slade when we go when school is over on the 19th who's in charge of the fields during the summer is that does that go to parks or does it all come back to us you know that's the that's the park district via the comments agreement that's what I thought I mean there's nine school district uses are governed by Park District yeah thank you you know I would encourage anybody if they have questions to reach out to Park District okay all right
065thanks for that so then we'll go to board member remarks and Toby you're on the top of my column this time so you get to go first all right thank you it's been a heavy couple weeks so I just want to make a personal statement about how I'm feeling first of all I want to recognize that my history and my privilege contribute to systemic racism and that's something I'm becoming more and more aware of and I want to grow and learn to become a better Ally to my friends and to community members and this is what I have to do on my own I don't expect other people to do it for me or educate me or carry that burden it's something that I seek to do on my own to improve and I'm proud
066that we've made racial equity a important priority for this school district it's been something that you know it's been on my mind for a few years ever more important that we continue this work and it's a long road and there's no clear ending and it's quite a journey and so I'm glad we've started that and it's clear to me that was much work yet to do you know cross across the community not just within the schools but engaging in the parents and other community members as a community you know leaders you know be the institution that's an opportunity that we have and a responsibility that we have and then you know finally you know through that I hope that we can continue to make the school district inviting safe and do our best to address
067racism and anti blackness so that's the statement that I have and something that's been heavy on my heart contribute something that's very thoughtful good message good for important for all of us so that you are next in line yeah I would just echo Toby what you're saying has just been you know it's been an intense few past weeks but really it's been an intense last you know 400 years and I'm I'm you know I ache for the fact that so many people we'll have died and that we as you know white Americans have turned our backs on our fellow Americans over and over and over and over again so I will tomorrow if anybody wants to join us Kelly and I didn't think that walking from the theater to the library was enough for us
068though I totally recognize it it's it's amazing the people are going to do that and it's great but we're gonna walk from telecoil to town because that just seems for us that's what we want to do so if anybody wants to join us we'll be leaving tail o'clock four o'clock we'll be having bring your own snacks bring your water bring your masks and bring your signs and bring your aching hearts and let's see what we can do to make the island more aware and and and really it's up to us to make this district better so that's and oh one last thing Thank You Stephanie for doing your one you know your month call-out shout outs because I gay pride month is special in my heart so I appreciate always appreciate that I love seeing
069those off those posters up through school so little shout out to Stephanie thank you thank you thank you Thank You Sabet Bob you're next on the column I don't really have anything to say which is not to say that there's in my heart and mind as you have said so well that and Toby I'm just going to talk less and listen more I think going forward hey and then spring okay I um I was feeling really proud of our district and our leadership team and all the principal's for their commitment to racial I could I think it was one of the things that during such a difficult last couple of weeks and like svet said 400 years but especially the last couple weeks that that gave me a lot of hope because it gave us
070this it just reminded me of the important role we all have in terms of being part of a really important system and our ability to really impact change and in kids lives and their family so um it just made me feel like yeah we are you're Jane this work and I think it was a somehow we we sort of missed our three year anniversary when the policy the racial equity policy was actually passed I think it I was trying to remember and maybe someone can help me out but I think it was a Beachcomber article I was seen from May 2017 anyway so um and I just also found it really interesting that probably you also saw the article about the u-dub eliminating the SATs so I thought that was really really interesting um and
071I'm just thinking about that taking that in so um please if you hadn't did you mention the Vashon be prepared survey plate sorry if I missed that but I know you emailed everyone about the survey they asked they're asking people to complete their joining they're doing such important work in our community so I just wanted to give a little bit of a reminder for people to do that survey - thank you all right I guess I'll just close off saying that as as awful as a lot of the things that are happening in society are right now that we're having to revisit this topic of of overt racism and racism in our community and on our streets I'm encouraged that we are having the conversation I'm encouraged that that um there are more allies for
072people of color to be able to step into the spotlight and as a white person I'm becoming over the course the last several years more and more aware of my own privilege and thought processes and that's work I continue to do you know every time these these horrific things come up that are just so understand and so hard to understand and I just I just feel like my own personal thing is I want to kind of do what Bob said in and speak less and listen more and make room for people of color to speak because I feel like white people have had the platform for a long long time and we need to step aside and let people of color have the platform so that we can be educated from their point of view
073and not from a white point of view about how we should respond so that's something I'm being mindful about as we go forward because I do strongly believe in equity and i i would be remissed as a member of the school's foundation not to remind our community that all of this racial equity work is funded by the Vashon Schools Foundation and our donors because the state does not provide any of that funding and so we would not have this wonderful initiative going on in our school it's sort of initiatives a bad word it makes it sound like it's sort of a new and temporary thing when it says it should be a sustaining and guiding principle of our district but the funding comes from our community's belief in the importance of that work and so
074I'm glad that when school board passed the policy few years ago the foundation was able to prioritize it as one of our major items for give big and other donations throughout the year and so we've been able to fund it to date and they'll be able to continue to fund it going forward with the continued help of our community so please donate to the school's foundation if racial equity work is important to you and I think the last few weeks have only shown us how much more work there is to do and my final comment is congratulations to the class of 2020 to our amazing seniors and their families for making it through this spring has been the test of all your resilience and patience and education and all the skills we hoped you learned
075along the way we rested here in this final year of your journey and we love you all and you think you're amazing and we know that you're gonna go forth and do great things in the world and this series of challenges will probably just make you stronger along the way we wish we could do it you know on the stage on the field but we're gonna do it right we're gonna treat you right tomorrow and we'd love all of you so yay class of 2020 all right if there's no more comments then we were going to have the 2021 budget hearing and we will open that to public cut to the public right now and Matt is going to present I don't know if there's any public comment right there's a no presentation per se
076aside from the last five months of the discussion and presentations that we've been having amongst ourselves the board the public etc what you have in front of you is Resolution 779 which is there for your approval which is the 2021 budget resolution so with no public comment I would recommend that we close the public hearing all right there's no I didn't even hear you open the public hearing well you missed it then but oh okay I guess I can watch the video I heard you talking about public comments but that was my booboo this isn't that keep you this it on the screen you're Erika yes is this nice who is Erika sorry is this the public hearing may I comment no we are taking public comments through the email as we indicated in the
077email okay so I guess what that member was was looking for was the official acknowledgement that the hearing is now open in often times I think we also document the time that we opened that meeting so and then we give it the time that we close it so I isn't the purpose of the public hearing to provide the opportunity for members of the public to comment on the board on the packet right and and we indicated in the packet when the pack was out that we will accept public comment similarly to our other public comment and we didn't receive any comment for the hearing so it would have had to be in received before for and ready right but I will I will let anybody know that if they want to submit any public comment
078after the time that's always a consideration and anybody can submit public comment after the the time the four o'clock time and that public comment will be entered into the minutes and will be shared with the entire board as well I would I just think that Steve Ellison I assume is that Steve yeah I just think as a matter of he's here he's talking public comment after we approved the budget would seem to be not comment well made or received so I would I'd recommend that the board follows its procedures as outlined that we've given the the notice and that we not be arbitrary in making decisions kind of that would fall outside those boundaries but yeah and I think it's it's my it's my logistical flub there to say a comment during this woulda it's
079a public opening of the it's a formality to open it and then close it so that's my my flub but the comments on the budget or any other subject or the public comment period and that was to been received by four o'clock today if anything was going to be read into the record at this meeting oh I think we can't we can't make exceptions or for this time period so with that we have opened it and we have closed it and I have mangled the process for which I apologize but we now need to go ahead and the cap in the decision items we have two decisions in front or today we have two resolutions the first one is the 2021 budget hearing a budget planning where we are asked I am recommending that the
080board approved budget resolution 779 alright further if there's any further discussion that is also obviously available to the board as well and I'm not hearing any further discussion so do we have a motion to pass the 2021 but it as presented I would like to make a comment if that's possible at this time I'm gonna vote for this budget but I'm going to do so with a number of concerns which I have expressed - I know Regan and enslave with so many unknowns in the world you know going forward I would have wanted to build in to budget for those unknowns to budget for risk I think it would be wisest of us to have a risk reserve - of you know unallocated dollars to cover risks I am concerned about enrollment I know that
081that's a crapshoot for all of us and Matt routinely does an awesome job I'm also concerned about a lack of a real plan to bring kids that suffered the most from the closure to bring them up to speed with the rest of their peers I strongly believe that any anything one thing we know that anything we are going to do is going to require more human resources and we do not account for that so I just feel like we run great risk going forward have to probably do something mid-year to reallocate all that but I recognize it's very late in the game didn't make an changes in budget but I just would urge us to be thinking about where we are going to be making additional cuts next year because I believe that additional cuts
082are going to be necessary so anyways I'm going to support the budget because I know a whole lot of good work went into it and but I am very concerned about our inability to meet unknown costs as they come forward ever following comments about I generally share some nerves around things that we don't know about and recognize that any changes into Adcox I also know that creating the budgets process that starts at the in the fall and continues and we do have a process through it and this year has been different we've been you know we the budget was basically largely done before Kovach 19 arrived so I want to acknowledge all the hard work and you know some continuity the process at the same time recognizing that there's risks we don't know yet so
083it would be hopefully as a board member and and uphold to me to communicate to community members is as we move forward with this budget to understand where where are those areas where you know we might be able to make some conscientious decisions about next year I don't expect an answer today I'm just thinking that would be that be helpful to understand you know is it moving you know what's flexibility do we have in cap tech levee for example or in the operating reserve or other areas just so that we know we can be as prepared as possible that's all all right anyone know all right I guess I'll conclude with my following comment on the budget as I acknowledge what both of what Bob and Toby said and agree I do want to recognize
084that we are certainly not the only School District with those anxieties and challenges and concerns and that everyone in the state who's on a school board or in a school district administration it's gonna have to be makings a lot of hard decisions in the next 24 months we're fortunate to have be riding on the last little bit of normal since the budget was largely done prior to the Kovan hitting from here on out it's all going to be uncharted territory but I think we need to take a deep breath and work the problem one step at a time as things come up and I think we have a great team to help us do that and to keep us informed so that we can make the best decisions possible on every step of the way
085and I also have a lot of faith in our financial team and recognize that it is a budget it's not written in stone it has some flexibility and hope they will be able to meet it and follow it and for me to make adjustments I'm confident that we'll be able to do that along the way so if no one else has anything to say about it do we have a motion to approve the 2021 budget as presented remove that we approve the 2021 budget second okay all in favor aye aye aye thank you everybody I'll concur with every board members statement and I'm thankful that we have an A+ team folks working together to to move through these you know like like Regan said 24 months but it will be longer than that and but
086we will be developing a set of priorities we will be developing a long-term plan and we'll have a great team of people to to solve those problems one by one as we get them it's not exciting work but it is time for us to come together in and we will be we will be a better team for it the next resolution is the WIA resolution that was before you last time resolution 784 this will be the the second board meeting in front of you of course it was any discussion there's still time that I barring any discussion I would recommend that we take action and adopt this resolution I mean we adopt this resolution from the WIA second all right all in favor all right okay that resolution passed all right so now we're moving
087on to reports and we've already heard from brandy thank you very much as usual and so now we're gonna go to Stephanie with the seal of biliteracy program update hello thank you for having me here tonight for a few different reports tonight I humbly breathe for Ahmad Barberie Brianna Taylor George Floyd and the countless other black and brown people who have been unjustly and violently taken from us because of systemic racism I too had a very heavy heart in recent weeks and have been struggling to find words to express myself but I'm super appreciative of our community and our district work it's because they've helped uplift me and help me stay focused on our work so the seal of bye literacy program is a celebration of some of the equity work that we've actually brought
088to the district we're in our fourth year of offering the seal of by literacy program to our students um it's a strengths based program so it honors basically all language learning whether that's language that's learned in the home as a heritage language or a student just has a passion for languages and is and studies independently or they study a language in one of our classrooms and it's a wonderful program in that it really honors all students who know English and any other world language in some cases multiple languages beyond just the two I'm it's important for our equity work because for those students who receive English language development services also students who oftentimes folks refer to as our English language learners it gives them the opportunity to earn credits towards high school graduation which means
089that they can choose to study another language beyond their heritage language in addition to English or they can use classes in the high school you know other things to explore when they're in high school or they can simply Bank some credits because unfortunately our students who do receive language services are more likely to fall behind with graduation requirements so it's a way for them to kind of front-load strengths based skills that they have as well as honor all all of the students who have a passion for languages so this report I do want to say probably from here on out would be best offered by the high school staff I successfully transitioned it over to Gus at the high school this year and since the program launched you can see the numbers there we've had
09095 students test I've listed the languages there for you and giving you as of this this week when our graduates across the stage there we 54 students in last four years who have earned those credits I also gave you a little bit of background on Washington that's that's good Jody it's go back down to that page just gave you a little bit of information about the program itself so they can earn credits competency-based credits and then of course at graduation if they have met a certain level of proficiency they earn what is known as a seal of biliteracy from the state great this is a such an impressive program I remember hearing first about it last year at graduation I think as the ceremony was happening I was figuring all this out or maybe it
091was presentation he gave great before graduation but it's a way before last year Toby well maybe it came to light when and saw the kids Toby you you are you've known this you have no no mom it every year getting old I think feels charged all right I'd be Stephanie Oh Stephanie I think it's great too that you got um Andrew Gus to take it over because I know your plate is really really full so I hope he can do this as well as you've been able to do it over the years well thank you I believe you know the first few years getting it launched I still had a lot of connections with a lot of students but as I've been at the central office it's much harder to have those connections and this
092program really works well if you can have someone in the building who's actively talking with students and engaging with students so it is a good program to have the high school take over but we also want to remember that it is open to seventh and eighth graders as well and so there is some coordination with the middle school to offer the program but it's grown over time this year we had the bit of the hiccup with closure although the testing company did come up with waste for students who wanted to pursue it to test remotely so we had a group test prior to school buildings being closed and then there's a group of students who've been tested later on the spring so yeah I think Andrew Gessle do a great job very well so Stephanie
093you're now gonna tell us about the highly capable program update okay so highly capable so this is just a snapshot of the program currently some important things to note we changed so first of all when we go through this process the process of selection is pretty rigorous in terms of the amount of information that we study about each student anyone can nominate a student we also review student testing results to see if there's anyone that's kind of percolating to the top that maybe isn't noticed by a parent or themselves or or a teacher so we kind of have this other way of making sure that we're casting a wide net we moved to Universal screening not only at the kindergarten but at 2nd grade this year as well again with an effort to try and
094cast a wider net for students that we might not be seeing but most importantly one of the changes we made is we moved away from the cogut which is an ability test to something another ability test called the negli Airi the Negley area is considered to be a much more equitable test it's completely nonverbal so it basically strips away any advantage a student might have just because they come in as high level readers in school but so it's it's really designed there truly to be nonverbal it's a fairly short assessment it helps give us a snapshot and again helps us capture students that might not otherwise be on the top of of anyone's mind when when we're going through this process so it's simply one indicator but we felt it was really important to try
095and move to an assessment that would be more equitable for our students i'm and then the rest on this page is just sort of a demographic breakdown we have 66 students across the district identified currently that actually is a percentage of about 4% so in our program we define roughly we're looking for the top 2% who are most likely to disengage from school as time goes by I mean but obviously we don't hold to that we don't use that as a cut score we look at a lot of scores and that's just evidenced by the fact that we're actually sitting around 4% in our school district so we use behavioral scales that are done by teachers we use their report cards we use testing history and we use all of that information to try and
096identify those most highly capable students top 2% definitely on a clarifying question that I think back up back up Jodi please the the the numbers in parens are right there 51 percent female 46 is they're represented their representation within the entire student body is that so I just put those there for reference so currently right in in the highly capable program currently 51.5% identify as female and district-wide it's 46.9% okay so we're slightly over-represented it's tricky when you're talking about a number of 66 because obviously the percentages can swing one way or another depending on who's identified in any given year and then the other piece to remember is that once they are identified parents must give permission to place them and then they stay in the program unless a parent request that they be
097pulled from the designation I'm going to test about the screening process in kindergarten 2nd grade are those tests are those screening parameters useful for other things are they only to identify like kids you know that's a great question obviously for our purposes we're going to focus on the highly capable process but certainly whenever were exam data we might stumble across other things that draw our attention so to speak and so for the purpose of highly capable programming where we're looking specifically at that but if we see something that is of interest we pursue it in other ways that makes sense okay thank you Stephanie and so now that brings us to a discussion item on the instructional materials committee adoption of material recommendations and stephanie is gonna lead this one as well okay um so
098you have in your packet the materials that we're looking to adopt for next year I want to really give a shout out to the middle school and high school social studies teams because you'll notice that all of the adoptions this year are social studies I and in particular I want to just give a shout out to Becky Blankenship Larry Dubois Heather Miller and Jason Butler who were the leads through this process um you may have noticed that we have three levels who are looking to adopt materials from a program that we actually are already using in the fifth and eighth grade so this will actually provide some nice continuity all of the materials come with online support online text and online materials the strength of the TCI program is that they have a lot of
099primary sources available online and it's also a curriculum that is updated regularly so once we have that we have access to the materials as they're updating online I'm especially excited for the middle school because we with this adoption the social studies textbooks that are more than 25 years old will be leaving the school which is super critical obviously important for us to have current materials that our teachers and students can have access to and that shouldn't fall solely on the teachers to constantly have to pull from other sources so if they have current sources good sources it makes their job much easier so I so that's the middle school and and then US history is the one that's looking at TCI and then Jason Butler worked on finding AP government materials the material that he's
100chosen was recommended by the AP program but also he felt he would be able to use the resources with his core government class so are there and and I want to just give a shout out I think I thought I saw Heather Miller online so she is online I don't know if any of the other teachers are with us tonight yes it does he's primarily interested in just having access to the textbook it comes with some additional support materials and we may or may not actually pursue those he's not as impressed with those pieces so Jody and I once once we know for sure we're moving forward with all of these materials Jody and I will be doing some confirming with teachers on exactly which resources they want and then working with the companies to
101see what we can get that supports what what our needs are in our district I'm Stephanie you're here I can't know what you call it that like amazing oh yeah the adoption cycle continuously draft yes apply to all of us draft yeah some I which I love this because it's you know like you'd start looking at it you know first you look at me like what is she talking about and then you kind of dig in you're like oh she's got going on um but I have to say on a little red flag when you said that those textbooks for 25 years old yes we just got rid of is there anybody else in here that's that old I know nobody else I these these these are the relics that we will be purging unless
102there's something hidden that I don't know about this is the importance of getting on this cycle so one of the things I first did when I came to the district was go back through all of the records records that I'd had from when I had a stint as a curriculum director previously and then went through Roxanne's records we started mapping it out because you have to map it out in a way that one that the district can afford and two its sustainable and so that's it's kind of a road map it's we're so close to actually getting on to the seven-year cycle so I'm a little bit sad to report that we're now looking at you know because of budgeting constraints that would probably have to push to more of an eight year cycle it's
103not a perfect map either sometimes we have to adjust in the moment but the idea was to get something down that mapped out what we're doing district-wide to give us an estimate of what the actual cost is for adopting those so I try to update those regularly with what the actual costs are for planning purposes and then when we do make adjustments or we have to make adjustments that gets noted in the table and I'm trying to be really diligent about getting down the actual year of adoption so sometimes you'll see a category like math and there might be some electives say at the high school and they're a little bit out of sequence with the main method option or sometimes we have a main method option or a main curriculum that we need to
104look at and it takes more than one year so most recently that happened with the English Language Arts adoption at Chautauqua took us two years to get through that and right now we're in the middle of looking at math materials for Chautauqua we jump-started the spring so that next year we could really zero in but yeah that the idea behind this is to just have a record of where we are what years we have things the rotation cycle and always kind of cycles through Chautauqua if they do ela one year then McMurray does it the next year and then the high school does it the following year that's generally how it works if she talked was working on ela one year MacMurray's working in a different content area in that same year so that you
105constantly have these different things working but it takes a little trickery to bounce it all out and keep it reasonable something that we actually can afford to sustain thank you that's great yeah not a question I'm sorry I just had a kudos to you and kudos to us for Stephanie I mean that this well it wasn't always thus and the updates of curriculum was very haphazard and stephanie has took taken this to the uber level and you know just this is a this is amazing to see and the kudos to us part is to have him for having the discipline to you know budget and to make sure that we have the money to regularly update our curriculum so I pat ourselves on the back especially you though yeah thanks Bob well and I forgot
106to mention I should mention this you know ever since you suggested you're in your last stint as a board member that we have training for the bias review I had Sherri Mitra in the district office and I we work together and so when we go through the bias review we actually assign a little online course to all of our reviewers and they have an opportunity to kind of go through and look at examples of what they should be looking for in the textbook so so that's the legacy Bob for you you have an online course design just because of your suggestions you're so close to getting everything on cycle on track and congratulations to you for doing that that was a dream of mine when I was in your role because it makes more sense
107and you know how sustainable and you know what it would look like so my feeling is that you just pointed out a legacy of Bob's but this is gonna be a legacy of yours for probably many many many years and much appreciate thanks yep great job Stephanie and I think I know the answer to this already but since given current events that one of those texts is a US history core textbook I just want to emphasize the care that you and your team take to go through and make sure that you know black history and other important elements are represented and that we have an equitable textbook that tries to reflect everyone's history as best as available out there so I know you take a lot of pride and do a lot of effort to
108make that happen and I just want to acknowledge that work as well thanks and kudos to Heather who's on line okay sounds like we're gonna move on thank you again Stephanie for a better take it welcome so that would bring us to the consent agenda we have a motion to approve that Oh second all in favor hey hi and is there any new business and if there's no new business we're gonna go ahead and adjourn at 8:46 p.m. Thank You Regan Thank You bar members thank you thanks everybody for showing up in the audience we can't see you it's frustrating yeah enjoy graduation that's right oh wait 20 20 yeah I mean I do have one thing I have a question for whatever which made me think graduation made me think of it um the
109student board members for next year just can I just like put that out thank you such an in process good thank you okay we need a motion to adjourn do we adjourn I did adjourn okay right you
