participants the next Target coming up soon is to sign up for the rise of change programs which is currently seven of these eight students who are in the program are on page to graduate high school with their Associates of Arts and Science degrees between the United the University of Wisconsin Green Bay in their first semester of the program those students have earned a total of 94 credits with the average GPA of 3.34 over the past semester there have been several experiences um the Warner High School main campus the main ones being an art and applied to science during art with Kate we have enjoyed me meeting a lot of guest artists over the past semester one guest that I enjoy listening to was Angela drakewood a visiting artist from Nebraska Miss Drake Force creates Arts
with plants and expresses himself with her sanctuary of these plants during this visits we got to learn how to plant pot our own plants and I named my plants plantricia and Mayo chef and I love them very much each of the campus art classes gets to go to the John Michael Kohler Arts Center once a month to work on little art projects these projects will be displayed in March for the community youth art month overnight applied science station students are building their miniature golf courses students had to make a workable 2D drawing and then a 3D mini designs for scale models and then a full-size miniature playable golf course I got to see some of the processes at the end designs were very original including one with a tire finally we had several projects happening
at our Maywood campus in Steam pbl there were plethora of projects going on but one of the main projects was building a miniature house to expand on the idea of architecture similarly to the miniature golf courses students had to make 2D drawings 3D drawings and floor plans and then finally construction of their own mini houses students got to decorate the inside of their houses and really make them their own maybe art also had a lot of projects going on last semester a group of students and I created a short film on Maywood bounce the filming process was new for everyone but we really enjoyed the process we had to do acting script writings edit and editing for the film to be a success I quickly figured out that editing is really tough but I'd still
do it again a new project that is in the works is Trail markers for Maywood the plan is to make wheelchair markers for the hiking pass around Maywood to make it easier to find certain trails a lot of students I talked with enjoyed that we could work on projects for Maywood and feel more within the community thank you for giving me the opportunity to share the news of Warner High School very good any questions for Warner all right Liliana all right hi my name is Liliana Heinen I am a junior at Etude high school and I am your representative last meeting I talked about why I go to Etude and some of the opportunities that we have experienced so far this year and I would like to continue sharing about those opportunities we ended the
first semester with etudes biannual exhibitions of learning exhibitions of learning are a two-day event at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center where students showcase art music dance and academic class projects this presentation derives typically from the class project block where students idea issues or topics to research students research 10 or more articles books professional models Etc that they write an annotation about as opposed to just summarizing the source you viewed there is an annotation template with guided questions about what the article is about what argument the author made what evidence the author provided and what the sort of the purpose of the source was this way of responding to a source makes it a very worthwhile information and it makes it easier to retain and understand the annotations then get compiled into an annotated bibliography
and students apply their Research into a creation that will solve or Advance their topic Creations can be so different ranging from music videos to animatronics 3D models to paintings and this year my exhibition topic was ballet strengthening and anatomy and physiology of dance every year as I go through this process I get better and better at public speaking I really appreciate this event at Etude because it trains students how to engage Their audience in a presentation and builds confidence with public speaking after exhibitions we finished up final work for our semester one classes and kicked off the new semester with a very successful FTC competition FTC or First Tech Challenge is a robot building team that works to build career-ready characteristics specifically in the stem field this past week's weekend's competition awarded our team the
first place motivate award for wowing the judges with their public Outreach our team put a lot of effort into engaging the community business team reached out to tons of organizations like human the Humane Society Meals on Wheels making spirits bright and the food break FTC helped these organizations by volunteering and Building Systems to help their businesses like a pulley system for Meals on Wheels that lifted the lids off of plants and created a raised hexagon bed other ways the team reached out to their Community was the Maker Faire and Levitt amp where FTC set up stance to talk about FDC and FLL first Lego League they also had interactive activities like learning to drive the robot and Lego kits for learning how to program and build robots and the goal for our team was to
teach younger students and about stem and encourage students to join these teams they also presented at several different Charter Schools recruiting team members and providing an opportunity for middle and high school students who are interested in engineering um students who are part of FTC say they love how FTC makes it easier to explore new skills and experiment with equipment like the laser cutter or 3D printer thank you for listening to my presentation wonderful thank you questions for Liliana well thank you both very much for coming thank you all right we are going to move on to community input uh welcome to this meeting of the Sheboygan Area School District Board of Education we are pleased that you are interested in educational issues we are interested in your comments and concerns about the school district this
will be this will be a part of this meeting for Community input individuals who live or work within the Sheboygan Area School District May address the board and Others May address the board at the discretion of the board president in order for the comments to flow smoothly we would appreciate that the following guidelines be followed by anyone wishing to address the Board of Education this evening number one your comments and suggestions will be limited to three minutes or less because we do have a full agenda to follow two comments and suggestions on the school district are welcome personal criticism of members of the Board of Education or employees of the district are out of order if you are um well I think what we're going to do we have a Podium here tonight because we
have interest in that in that Community input is the sign-in sheet on the sign in sheet that's on that side table to the right of the podium so we ask that you sign in um and after you are recognized what I'm going to suggest is that a couple of people stand behind the current speaker and in that way we can just keep the flow going more um more efficiently also for the record please uh State your uh name and spell your name and address for the record um we normally receive citizen input and we do not respond or debate if there's need for an answer or a response to a concern or issue the superintendent or one of the administrative staff members will get back to you now I am assuming that many folks here
are here with not all but with respect to uh the issue of certain books in the library before we start I want to uh share with you the following over this past weekend concerns were raised regarding controversial books contained within the South High School library following the process outlined within board policy AJ 2555 pertaining to the procedures for reconsideration of materials included in the library collection principal formula has decided to remove three books fun home genderqueer and are you my mother from the school's library collection now we're going to for those of you who are speaking we're going to ask you to speak loudly and clearly you will be heard because during the course of your presentation your three minutes or fewer no one is going to be speaking or making any comments or clapping
or shouting or in any way disrupting your three minutes so I would ask the first person who is interested in speaking to please come forward foreign keeper by the way I should say is our trustee vice president he will let you know when you have 30 seconds left and at three minutes you will be cut off respectfully please go ahead uh John Paul 5332 wild Meadow Drive I said I don't know I just got a multiple text message saying the audio to my wife back down and running good uh okay so job qualify 332 wild Meadow Drive uh so uh I am here to speak tonight because I was one of the people that went to South High to look at these books I first want to address that any notion by any member of
the community board member School District employee that this was done on my behalf because it is against the lgbtq community is 100 and completely wrong and false so any person that here tonight says that you are wrong I did this because it's inappropriate sexual material in a high school or anymore any other school because of her I did it because that should not be in a school period end of story you want to show me a heterosexual book any other type of book that has that in it I will tell you it's inappropriate and I'll be the first person to go to the school to look at it and to make sure that the public knows it shouldn't be there that is my first concern and that is the reason why it was brought up
second of all I did speak with uh some board members on this topic I plan to try to speak with more but as you can see I do have my hands full so uh to those board members that I have not gotten to yet I will try to speak with you in person you can speak with me on those issues uh but I just want to make sure that everybody here tonight listening online or anywhere else knows for sure that that was the only reason why it was done and no more it is inappropriate for those books to be in school clean and simple and in the future I would ask that this board considered changing their policies to make it a little bit more transparent and open and easier for either the board or
other people to have those books for you my understanding based on some of the process that can be lengthy but in this case it was done a little bit quicker and it should be for those that seen the images uh they were very disturbing even for people adults to see it was hard for me to share it with several board members that I've reached out to and I can tell by their facial reactions that it was hard for them to view so anybody in my opinion that thinks that those books are appropriate for any school level I think need to check themselves for either running for this board or serving this community because pornography distributed to minors even though in some scenarios it may be uh protected by State Statute is anything but wrong thank
you who's next my name is Suzanne sprouts and I live at 3917 in the Richmond Lane 308 um Sheboygan Wisconsin 53083 can you hear me could you speak up a little bit okay I think I'll just yeah that that works like that um anyways thank you for the opportunity um just being good for me to speak on behalf of the students and families of the district as a former employee of the school district and citizen of Sheboygan I deal with concerned um deeply Disturbed that any of this any any any of us would think that facing pornographic images in the library or anywhere minors can view is okay um the fact that multitudes of concerned parents and citizens had to speak up and and flood U.S emails and calls to get them engages is quite
concerning and this should all have been common sense in my opinion however that has not been the case um in my previous role as a school social worker in the district if I ever came across a student who had an adult exposing pornographic materials with them I would be on you I would be on the board video for these immediately and anybody who works in the school district is a mandated report so they would have to be doing the same thing um and now so many others so so um many of the so-called seeing adults are thinking this is a good thing all in the name of non-discrimination gender Equity diversity and inclusion and many of this whole process that how we get to here is striking stability strength and similarities to The Grooming process
of sex offenders and pedophiles and we can respect people for who they are because that's really what we're should do but not showing them programming and under sexually explicit materials is just wrong and all these agendas and they are agendas seemingly start innocent in the name of health safety and well-being kindness tolerance acceptance things like that that this is supposed to help us that that is what they tell us and at some point it just becomes a nightmare as is what we have going on right now um anyways so going forward we just take a we just take a step back and really look at the situation because it is a plan to harm our children I don't know if anybody else thinks anything different but it is a plan to harm our children and
it is harming our children I'm asking each of each of you to look deep between yourself and ask yourself do you really want to allow your children your grandchildren or anybody's children to be exposed to this type of material and again I ask how would this fit into the vision of the district which says all students will be responsible for productive and responsible citizens in a competitive world we should be educating another documentation thank you thank you good evening my name is Charles cornbread I'm a new resident here in Sheboygan I've come lately from missionary work in Russia St Petersburg in Latvia and my wife and I have relocated here back to the United States and I found a great home here on the fresh coast of Wisconsin but I have to have my voice
to those who are registering their profound disgust with books like genderqueer fun home and others that have been found recently in the South High School library and although the board president has reported that they have been removed it's also profoundly disturbing that such books were there in the first place by what process were they ordered I assume that taxpayer expense what kind of vetting allowed for them genderqueer for instance has changed National notoriety and also International notoriety the other school board meetings concerning such books in schools which would argue against ignorance or an inadvertent oversight of its placement in the library it's very tidal should have at least called for scrutiny it is also profoundly disturbing given their content and character that some high place members of the school board or of the of the
school district are reported to have categorized these books euphemistically as quote gender identity unquote books public officials serve under the compact of public trust that trust has been breached by this matter and it leads to questions of how we the public can trust an Administration if it is going to allow or even Foster the placement of such materials in our schools as a new Resident I'm led to ask out of just curiosity are these books also at North High School the middle schools of the district are worse the elementary schools and how are we to know are we to have confidence in our school administration in matters like this we have a state mandated human growth and development Community Advisory board that deals specifically with gender issues in the curriculum where they informed or they
asked for their advice did they approve but further matters against the public trust and parental confidence are out there waiting for Discovery because of this these matters need to be forthrightly and transparently addressed it is incumbent on the board to take all necessary steps to correct a present issue and address the loss of confidence that makes one wonder if public education is not going to become more ideology masquerading as curriculum thank you foreign as a father of two teenage girls in the spring Area School District I am appalled that our libraries contain graphic and pornographic material that are available for anyone's access this should shock us all as parents administrators and staff that our children are being provided these materials and it's and that are deemed harmful to minors we have to remember they are
minors the Wisconsin child pornography law state whoever with knowledge of the character or content of the materials sells rents exhibits plays distributes or loans to a child and even harmful material with or without monetary consideration is guilty of a class one felony because the following applies the person knows or reasonably should know that a child has not attained the age of 18 years and two the person has face-to-face contact with the child before ordering the sale rental exhibit playing distribution or alone at those materials harmful description or narrative account means any explicit or in a detailed description or narrative account of sexual excitement sexually explicit content sadomasochistic abuse physical torture or brutality that's uh that taken as a whole is harmful to children my request of this board thankfully removed some of these books is
to remove all books containing harmful materials pornographic materials or any imagery that's harmful to minors this includes materials related to gender identity transformation gender fluidity and anything that supports transitioning from your biological birth gender prior to the age of 18. as adults we know the difference between right and wrong and maintaining these materials for minors to view is completely wrong who do I hold accountable for these materials being available to my child to the children of this District to minors I would like to know because I would like to vote you out of this school board as a coach and a parent it's my responsibility to take care of these children and I don't think that's being done at this point I hold you accountable to make the proper decision and correct this immediately amen
good evening my remarks tonight are directed towards some members of our community could you give us your name and address please I'm getting there South High School's administrative team and our district leaders they are not directed at the board because you all are already aware of their loss and what our students need my name is Kelly d Holstein k-e-l-l-y h-o-l-s-t-i-n-e my address is on the sign up sheet I'm the owner of sheboygan's only independent bookstore where he has a book house I've been a high school English teacher a professor a graduate at undergraduate courses a director of educational equity and Equity 2.0 consultant I have a master of arts in education and I'm a Minnesota state teacher of the year I would like to start with a quote by Desmond Tutu that might be familiar
to some of you if you are neutral in situations of Injustice you have chosen the side of the oppressor challenging books that represent identities that are historically marginalized and oppressed as prejudicial and causes direct harm giving into these challenges and pulling these books from our schools libraries is nothing short of discrimination the most recent challenges and removal of the books fun home are You My Mother by Allison bechdel and genderqueer by Maya kobabe have sent the message that there are some people in our community and in our school district that lack empathy and compassion from members of the rainbow Community your actions matter more than your words and our Educators and students are watching surveys by the Human Rights Campaign consistently review the majority of lgbtqia p2s plus students feel unsafe in our schools and
are five to eight times more likely to attempt suicide polling these books is contributing to these statistics none of these books meet the legal definition for obscene material or performance Wisconsin I think you're not excuse me I listen to you all please show that respect uh and I'm just going to hold if there is one more of these kinds of incidents Community input will be adjourned and we will go on with our school board meeting we all owe each other the respect of keeping our our feelings to ourselves while other people are speaking thank you thank you Wisconsin statute 944.21 clearly states quote the legislator intends that the authority to prosecute violations of this section shall be used primarily to combat the obscenity industry and she'll never be used for harassment or censorship purposes against
materials or performances having serious artistic literary political educational or scientific values the legislator further intends that the enforcement of this section shall be consistent with the First Amendment to the U.S Constitution Article 1 Section 3 of the Wisconsin Constitution and the compelling State interest in protecting the free flow of ideas end quote these books are not patently offensive and they possess a great deal of educational literal and artistic value the law demands that you do not attempt to use this statute for censorship which is exactly what some of you all are trying to do I encourage folks to read these books to learn something new and to increase your empathy and I beg our school leaders to care about the well-being of all of our students all of them I applaud all of the school
staff members and board members who are doing the work to enact Equity 2.0 in our schools they are doing everything they can to ensure that every individual can access whatever they need to thrive and to help people feel like they matter time thank you nothing less than our gratitude support and respect thank you foreign I am a retired Sheboygan Area School District teacher of 18 years I am presently the president of the Sheboygan County writers Club people are set free by reading reading opens Windows to children youth and adults providing explanations to why the world is as it is through reflecting life experiences stories and histories of others in and Beyond the Sheboygan community once a book is banned students who have much less control over access of information cannot obtain critical information that would
help them to understand both themselves and the world and parents no longer have the opportunity to capture a teachable moment with their kids I believe that limiting our children's access to books does not protect them from life's complex and challenging issues if you believe books are tools for understanding complex issues that our young folks deserve to see themselves reflected in books our schools make available to them thank you for this opportunity thank you my name is Jamie Speckman h-a-l-e-y start with s-t-u-c-k-m-a-n my address is 41.60 the top priority in our school district must be education academic education is the purpose of school the sasd's focus should be on preparing our students for the workforce or for higher education the books that were found in South High School library this pastor do not reflect a focus
on academic education it was a quick show of hands how many of you were aware of this fact Sheboygan area school district is ranked 385 out of 421. that's what I thought yeah tonight we have a significant crowd of passionate parents rallying on both sides regarding the books that were found in an sasd Library do they belong there no you really don't explicit graphic novels demonstrating the sexualization of minors do not belong in the school district and for those that insist the individuals depicted in the images are not minors well to that I maintain it is not suitable for viewing within a school setting eliminating books of this nature is not an attack on any individual sexual orientation it is certainly not homophobic in nature in fact if these books were a Nifty guide to
sexual gratification between two consenting adults they still don't belong in a school library it was time to refocus our efforts and give our students what they need a solid academic education with better post-high school Success we must demand a guaranteed focus on academics we must demand a concentrated effort on higher graduation effects the time is now we must demand truth transparency and Trust for our Sheboygan Area School District Lorraine green l-o-r-r-a-i-n-e green micro color with the E on the end uh 2308 North 35th Street in Sheboygan and I just want to start off by saying I was also a teacher of the year first Sheboygan Falls just prior to my retirement and that that's including elementary middle school and high school so for the girl who told you she was from Minnesota and uh she
I think she's a girl anyway uh excuse me all right Madam we will not tolerate that kind of of characterization please be guide your guide no ma'am ma'am we will not insult anyone in this community we will not disparage anyone you are free you are free to make your comments regarding whatever it is you like in a respectful manner thank you all right carry on and I'll apologize to her I didn't mean to um degrade her my current understanding of the situation regarding the pornographic Holdings in the South High libraries is that these uh three questionable books have been removed from the shelves I have several questions about the situation first of all have those been books been removed from all of the shelves of all of the schools in the Sheboygan area or just
South High next will those books be returned to the shelves at some point how many more pornographic Holdings does this school hold and the same question holds true for all other school libraries in our district and yes I really would like the answer to those questions so if you would take the time to answer them I would appreciate it I guess I won't get it tonight but I would like to know that it is wonderful news that somebody took the time to further look and decide that these books were not suitable for child child use for them to see it is eye-opening information that our school district approved these books and most likely approve many more in the same category if the school the librarian the ministrations were all okay with it being there in
the first place we have a major problem I would think think that the Librarians the staff of our schools and the administration should be getting out their magnifying requests and taking a closer look at all questionable Holdings and doing it thorough cleaning and what sits on the shelves of our library okay I'm gonna jump down to the ending then I I was being chastised for part of that this three minutes so I would hope you give me a little leeway the Ala has a comprehensive list you can go there ala.org slash advocacy slash looks frequently challenged that'll give you a good starting point to look for what we should not be seeing on our on our shelves thank you ma'am your three minutes are up who's next Becky McGinnis said ma'am not pornography ma'am not
inclusive thank you you were being talked about on one channel today hello there my name is Levi Valentine um I leave that 620 South 8th Street Sheboygan and um I'm gonna try to investigate through this I apologize if I'm a little nervous um I'm trans and it's very scary in this room with so many people who are taking such as stance against my community um so I currently work as a psychosocial Rehabilitation person um with kids who have been through what I've been through when I was 17. I was sexually assaulted in front of a group of my peers and I know what it is to be both the victim of sexual grooming and sexual predation and to be the person to stand up for another and help them fight through it as it currently
happens I own all three of these books I have written sex ed courses I am close with the transgender Community within the high school districts right now and I am also a transgender Community activist I would stake my name my home and my career on the fact that these books are safe and the only outcry against them is one against trans people and against diversity I would pray that you guys take a good look at the books and consider what the agendas are at play here thank you so much Ari craft p-r-a-t-h has been brought my to my attention that there are some point breakfast books being allowed in the schools it is my understanding that these books are being labeled as gender identity books if what I'm about to ask you brings any sort
of disgust to any sort of distrust to you then my point has been made I would like to know since when pictures of a person sucking a male's penis is self-identifying I would like to know since when are pictures of a person pleasuring a woman's vagina with their mouth is self-identified I would like to know since when mentioning rubbing the front of my jeans and imagining getting a is self-identified these books are porn that's it there's no other way to swing it if my children showed up to school with Playboys they would be reprimanded why is this any different it's not has anyone checked out the age range for these books I did and they're 18 years or older no one else you can buy you can't buy until you're 18. corn coincidence I think
that I'm being told that these books are now being taken off the shelf but for how long till we back down until the heat planning goes away but we'll replace these books we can't mention not in schools but we can give our children born whoever okay these books be put in schools should be held accountable even at preschool level some of these children are only 14 years old and they are able to go to the library and check out books that are intended for adults shame on whoever about this they happen it's disgusting I think I speak for all of our side when I say we're not attacking the lgbtq plus whatever Community we would feel the same way if it were straight people having sex and it was allowed in our school thank you
good evening my name is Patrick Burke the u r k e I live at 627 here on evidence Sheboygan Wisconsin um so I have a different stance what more is the school district doing to keep the lvg QT students safe and about the same access to materials opportunities as other students or excuse me opportunities as any other students in the district clearly when there is a group who is attacking them how is this District ensuring all students have the same rights Equity recognizes that each person has different circumstances and elegance the exact resources and opportunities to reach an equal outcome LG TQ students are already marginalized and they're being further marginalized by attacks from these groups so how's the district using the resources to ensure they OBT students have equities with the rest of the
student body thank you for your time questions good evening my name is Reverend Stephen Welch I'm the pastor at Reformation Presbyterian Church here in Sheboygan which is just down the street on Highway B I live at 140 Sunrise Court in Cedar Grove and I appreciate the opportunity to address this body to see me as a pastor I have had experience dealing with men and some women who have been affected by pornography there have been a number of ministry groups and opportunities to counsel with people who have been affected by pornography we have seen the effect of pornography on marriage relationships on other kinds of relationships it's affecting every aspect of society our culture is experiencing the effects of pornography particularly on our young people when I was growing up you had to go to a
part of the town to a bookstore in order to get pornography now you can pick up your iPhone you can turn on the computer or you can go go to the school library this is something that should not be acceptable in a moralistic culture this is not something that should be accepted by a culture who wants to train their children to be strong and to take the positions in places of leadership within our culture there are a number of effects that pornography has had particularly on children it initially affects their brain it has effects on their relationship it has effects on how they view life they become addicted to it and it is creating more and more of a problem we have seen the number of sexual abuse cases within our schools within every aspect
of society there's no institution that has been free from that and we have to ask ourselves why is this continuing why do we see an increase in sexual abuse in our culture we can we have to go back to the fact that we are a culture that is becoming tolerant of too much so-called sexual expression sexual expression is something that should only be within the confines of a marriage and when we allow our children at a young age to see this sort of thing it does have a great effect on you and I would ask this body this school board to please reconsider this we do thank you for those books that you have removed but we would ask that you would look at this more uh importantly and see the effects that it does
have on our children thank you for your time foreign thank you for the opportunity to be able to speak I'm a Communications and ethics instructor but first and foremost I'm a parent a child in the Sheboygan Area School District I'm here to voice our support for our Librarians and for keeping School libraries an open place for inquiry for students which includes not Banning notes if any books has an inherent problems some ethical and some legal first many of the books being banned specifically target books that feature characters who are written by authors who are part of the lgbtq community students who are part of that minority group rightfully Reserve representative voices in our school's libraries as they may face shame or even punishment for asking questions or talking to others about sex with sexual orientation
libraries allow people to seek information you can access literature without judgment furthermore Banning literature that represents non-majority voices for this to isolate and other a community of people who are already at higher risk for mental health health crises this book ban only further was already vulnerable people at an even higher risk of harm when the heart when in the crosshairs fellow political divide free access to books even ones not everyone they like is not just an ethical right but a legal one rooted in the First Amendment tinkerby Des Moines School Board asserts that students do not shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse Gates this right extends to what books are made available for optional reading and public school libraries only when a book does not meet all three
criteria of the Miller test as established in Miller Bay California is it legally Justified as obscene or vulgar enough to be banned constitutionally one Criterion that is that a text does not have serious literary artistic political or scientific value this is a tough bar to reach when discussing works of literature and art the courts have consistently found literary value and texts that others have thought to be a pornographic a lot of reasoning people can see the clear distance difference for example in the nudity of the Statue of David and the nudity and Playboy even though both are visual a difference between revenge porn and dostiates these Notes from Underground scene a work of Literature Like a statute may contain nudity it may contain graphic descriptions or imagery however it's done with literary value some people
may not see that value in books like fun home but that does not give a group of people even a majority group the right to ban others who do value it from accessing it parents have the freedom to censor reading for their own children but not for my child and not for the parents of children who seek representation and understanding of their own sexual identities our libraries and our school can and should continue to serve all populations equitably of students and allow students to pursue the pre-percentive ideas thank you thank you I remember Dr Julie Navi Molina 728 Oak Tree Road spelling address back there I'm the parent of a fifth grader and an eighth grader I'm a certified sexuality educator for middle school high school and I'm also clergy um I'm concerned about the
removal of some books that have already happened as well as what I'm hearing about people recommending removing more books and censoring more things folks have already made a case that these books were removed that actually benefit from White experts as being age appropriate so I'm going to see something as a parent I want kids exposed to mirrors and windows as they move through their education I want them to learn about themselves and want them to learn about others this classrooms healthy healthy self-esteem and empathy I even want them exposed to ideas that I don't agree with because that gives them opportunities to weigh the family values that we set at home and to put them into practice so they learn to stand up for what they believe in and to make choices for themselves they're
still at home I like that our libraries offer them ways to brighten our Horizons in ways that are different from what they might find on the internet youth are naturally curious about gender and sexuality whether we like it or not and youth and the internet doesn't care about obscenity and it doesn't care about respectful accurate representations of what biologists psychologists scientists and humans with real experiences have confirmed about the naturally occurring diversity related to gender and sexuality and our created world I understand that everyone wants our youth to be safe no one wants youth to suffer to harm themselves or each other to feel isolated for unwanted or unworthy as a person of faith I want everyone to feel loved to feel worthwhile and Affirmed the removed books were about lgbtqia realities and we know
that lgbtqia youth have much more limited options to learn about themselves and to see themselves represented in the world around them we know that they faced exclusion judgment and ignorance about things that are very real to them we know that this lack of healthy representation and lack of affirming resources for information about their realities as serious often deadly impacts on their lives moving these books and ones like them is removing a Lifeline for youth who are already struggling it's misguided it ignores science and expert knowledge targeted it's discriminatory so please please let's protect our vulnerable youth by letting them access the college hi my name is Dennis Rodney r u n g e the 1926 South 15th Street here in Chicago 53081 I'm just an average guy I grew up in a Time but um
Gray beard I'm talking about a tank 55 60 years ago when I was in school and uh times are different you know Playboy was kind of acceptable James Bond he was a kid and that's just not uh well let me tell you what it led it led to 40 Years of misogyny and addiction to pornography that's where he led to it and I don't think that's what we want to be exposing our students do I was exposed to it in the fifth grade and I carried it with me that long what was that God was the only thing that took it away otherwise I'd still be here you know it's just please think these are children you know some of the stuff that I hear going on in the schools is I wonder what what's
going on please please thanks for our kids my name is Mark koistra m-a-r-a-a-o-o-i-s tra I live at 729 South 27th Street in Sheboygan Wisconsin I'm a guy that's going to tell it like it is we all need to take a deep breath right now okay I hate no man but I have a right for what I believe in as well I'm not homophobic I have nothing against people with different gender choices than I but I'm allowed to live by faith to what Jesus tells me in the Bible because for me and my family I believe the Bible is the inherent word of God and is the only correct book without error in this country I speak for my family I do that to protect them from the nonsense that comes from taking a stand for
what's right in this world I protect my wife of 40 years of 43 years I protect my four children that I worked hard to help them through college they're all married they live in Sheboygan I'm the only one that is approached with I love them people and the only fever love I have on this Earth for people is for the eighth beautiful grandchildren that they give them and then I've done you all four of my children graduated from South High School and all of them have asked me to convey that I speak for all of us don't risk my words please I want to thank each and every one of you for being in a thankless job in donating your time you're doing the primary thing that God tells us in his word to do
that many people in this audience will never do you have to servant's Heart and I thank you for that and in that Spirit understand I don't need any of you God commands me to love all men and I want you to know I have more sin than everybody in this room put together thank you sir we appreciate your comments who's next hello boys my name is Victoria and my address is listed already I'm a retired teacher from Sheboygan school I had taught special needs as well as program support I've talked post-secondary topical secondary Ed for teacher training as well currently I volunteer so I'm still involved with seeing our youth I have gone through Chicago Public Schools my husband has our son has and our granddaughter currently is in the schools what I'm concerned about
is the slippery slope of any kind of band all of us did the Pledge of Allegiance and said for liberty and justice for all what is the next population that may be questioned we have populations of people of color we have immigrants we have people who have various interpretations of religion we have freedom for and freedom from religion we may have a vocal group of individuals saying it should be my way and that's the only way but we're a public institution and I think it's important to look at critical thinking it's important to think of our high school students who may be taking classes at our colleges where they get dual credit for both high school and college credit and in the college curriculum they're going to be exposed to critical thinking to people who
are different I'm deeply concerned tonight when I hear a concern of a person identified and making a joke in a sense of are they a male or a female or what if anything that strengthens we need to have folks we need to have education we need to have the discussion or diversity and tolerance and respect for all so I would say what is the next issue will it be somebody coming up here and saying I do not want you teaching about the Holocaust because I think the Holocaust is wrong so you've got a very tough job I admire all of you I thank you for your patience and I know that you are deeply concerned just as everyone here is concerned but we need to be concerned about a slippery slope of banning books thank
you for your time my name is South High School and someone who had spent uh quite a bit of time in the South High Library learning and furthering my education outside of what I was learning in the academic sense and I was not planning on speaking but there have been uh several comments that were made tonight that have deeply upset me um and I can only imagine what our friends in the lgbtq community are feeling so essentially all I want to say to those folks is that you were seen and you were heard and you are welcome again my name is c-o-jta 2934 Ash before Sheboygan first I would like to um again thank you for listening to me I'd like to give poodles to the principle itself on to remove those books not knowing
where that was going to go or what it was a good decision it at that point in time I'm totally confused and I hope everybody can help me I'm red um those books in fact I have all the books here if anybody hasn't seen them on the lights and um which one is it are you my mother I didn't read that as about gay and lesbian transgender from yeah the main character was but the pictures in the conduct to me I just they're just inappropriate for everyone you're all trying to say that trans and people are gay or lesbian people live and do the kinds of activities that go on page after page in this book that's how those folks live I don't believe that I had someone very very close to me who was
a gay young man so why isn't it it's not a game transgender thing it's just inappropriate information that I don't I'm personally not trying to ban it I just want it out of our schools if you want to go and buy it and you go to the public library I'm not I'm not talking about that but it's not in my school I want it in my schools it doesn't help anyone I picked up those books thinking the author wants to explain a point of view that I've never walked in a trans person's shoes or a gay or lesbian I want to learn about this well it is so it is written in such with such filth how is that going to ever help us understand each other and the only way we're ever going to
work this out is by coming together so help me I I guess it would happen that would do that um biography is pornography and those books are pornographic cute anyone in this room are divided to tell me why pictures of soiled sanitary pads um in the description that the person has warned them for as long as they possibly could until the drainage is um like coffee grounds before she changes what would my kid or anybody's kid missed by not carrying that or reading that one so this is going to be tough I hope we can form some kind of a committee or something that can at least do an Overlook on these and we can have come to a consensus of what's reasonable face School the targeting of lgbtq issues for public outcrying debate including
the district's Health curriculum and Library resources it's part of a clear strategy to show fear and paranoia under the guise of popular children when in fact children most in need of protection including queer and trans kids are being endangered by this inaccurate and harmful rhetoric the lives and experiences of lgbtq plus students and families and all students in general in fact the last incident that was mentioned was a very normal part of any uh and a less adolescent process are being engendered by uh okay sorry um lots of experience of these students are being used repeatedly as political punching bags and we trust the school board members to recognize and acknowledge as harmful and obviously for what it is sorry for kind of stumbling I was afraid to read from my heart because I wanted
to make sure I got points here so I'm reading this the school board has a responsibility to ensure all district policies and practices are fair Equitable and just and that all students are safe and protected especially students in historically and currently oppressed groups like parents trans students we asked the board to be vigilant and clear-eyed in their duty to protect the most vulnerable students in their care and not let lgbtq students be used to sponsored cultural World we're I'm trusting you our school board to help ensure safe and affirmative families which are a core element of Student Success in life we're all looking for a state safe and impermanent communities safe and affirming Neighbors hello everyone I'm Carol Christensen and I'm the proud mother of an lgbtq so in fact after seeing firsthands and suffering
that my child my precious child went through I'm even prouder of my child today than you know for making it through it's simply LGBT being an LGBT Q would be Pam could you speak up just a little louder thank you my child felt alone and terribly alone as they went through this process and our Sheboygan schools um and I really think in lgbtq book would have helped it would have been a Lifeline it would have been something that they could have gone to that wasn't judgmental it was stupid to help them get through certainly not as pornographic but no one wants that myself myself included here but I do feel it would have helped and I simply ask that these books be measured in the same way that any other point and that we all
come together everybody has our best kid our kids best interests at heart just come together for these kids and frankly if you're watching and you're a child that is part of the LGBT community know that you are loved and cared for and included and I hope the School District offers threat and diversity of materials products to help them live a wonderful life all of our kids live a wonderful life to you oh to the alley 4627 West rendition Drive um I thank you for allowing me to speak and I also want to thank you all for uh putting forth whenever effort you did to get the books out of the schools again we are not about banning books either but we are about getting pornographic material out of our schools it has no business being
there um graphic images and graphic verbiage of just heart-wrenching stuff that honestly if like someone else had brought up if we were to bring a Playboy magazine into school how would that go what would happen to us or if we were to pass out pictures I don't think anyone has even looked at these books to see these graphic pictures like I feel like I need to just scrub my eyeballs after I saw this stuff it was disgusting is seriously disgusting and I hope the bottom line is that I don't want my children exposed to porn the school setting they're not 18. in a school setting I told maybe High School you may be a senior would be but I would hope that we can come together and uh look at a policy change we're not
about banning books if you want to do whatever you want at the public library that's fine you know but there should be a restricted session that you should have uh show an ID to rent something or to check out a book like that fine show your ID your 18 keep it at the mid Public Library keep it out of our schools where our our babies are at okay policy change is what I'm after some kind of something that can like I said we are not about banning books we're not anti anybody none of us we want what all what's best for every child but we also don't want our kids learning about pornography in different ways to do stuff with each other whether they're two of the same or different or whatever either way it's
not acceptable um foreign yeah I had one other thing that's that's all I have to say thank you for your time um a lot of people have raised a lot of good points I just want to talk about some of the things the coincide with them uh first of all um again the people who are advocating to not have these books exposed to our children I I you know articulate it way better than what I am I think it's very something that you guys really need to understand you're putting that material in the library moves all choice for the people who don't want to remove all trucks okay people who want that no different than if I think my granddaughter I'm interested in meteorology I go buy a book to help her learning in addition
to what she's learning in the neurology this is no different than that okay but you putting the material into the library removed my opportunity not to have my children have exposure to that the material is pornography I said look at the definition of pornography we didn't understand it and then look at the material secondly today we're coming I just thought you know I should really go on this public school board and take a look at their mission what is their mission have you all used one of the question with the foundation and knowledge of skills through quality and structure opportunities and positive learning in an active partnership with the family and the community what is the family saying we're giving a good direction okay reinforcing values which Inspire them to access the opportunities of this
Society to try for excellence in their Endeavors and contribute to the responsible citizens okay so then I looked at something else and well one lady brought up that uh where does schwein Area Public Schools rank we ranked at 385 out of like 421 or something like that anybody here you guys should be did you look like in the paper last thing North High this is who it said I would graduated meets few expectations fails to meet expectations we're here talking about pornography in school why are you talking about why these kids can't read write articulate themselves communicate get a job why don't we talk about that that's what's supposed to be taught at the school system this is a social experiment that keeps getting pushed in the wrong direction further and further and we need
to stop this I said there is no other choice if you put it in schools all the other parents I'm asking has ever happened thank you thanks Rebecca letters my address is written down as a social studies teacher I'm really excited to see several physical yes um as a teacher um I'm excited about that I'm also a little bit sad about the slippery slope that someone else mentioned um what I I have a little more knowledge because I'm a teacher because I sit on like you know parent-teacher groups and stuff like that and so I guess one thing I I think that some people maybe don't realize is I've heard some inaccuracies I heard words like distributed these books aren't distributed I heard words like fostered this wasn't fostered um things like the school board
does not so we have people for that um and we we already do have committees that look at these books and although um some people may not be aware of it but there is a process to go by and I know this these books removed more quickly um I think it might really help um the community to be more aware of exactly what the policy is so maybe that's something the board can consider how do you let the community know exactly what the process is or how books are approved um and what happens when a concern is brought to their attention um I feel that I know in my heart there are a lot of concerns parents and community members here I fear that there may also inappropriately be some people here for their own
political agendas I hope there are more people here in the Forum than the ladder um I I think that banning books um because they have content you personally do not like or agree with creates ignorance and eliminates opportunities for conversation conversations where parents and caregivers can have open and honest discussions with their students about their concerns of database beliefs actually why some people are afraid to have those conversations but that is not the job of the sport either the fact is there is a process um for our school policies I hope I can make that clear to them and I hope that the board stands by all of your students families and staff in our Public School thank you well uh my name is Anthony arclayo and I live at n204 County Road LL and
Cedar Grove Wisconsin I work at Fuller company I thought about this vehicle today I'll allow it why because there were communities not in this District work in the district mark should come from either side Mark let me finish our policy allows me to in the discretion in my discretion to allow it I see where we are winding down and I'm going to allow this but I do appreciate your comments it's unacceptable for this community to take input from somebody that has no Sandy foreign military brat the previous clear service almost every three years in my childhood so having a home is not a luxury that I'm allowed to have since I've come to Sheboygan I've found acceptance amongst my workplace and goes around me and I am also a member of the lgbtq community and
seeing that some books be removed that have representation of those in my community is a little scary I wish I had access to some of those resources as a kid I did not oh yeah these books are deemed unacceptable that perhaps we could find an alternative that would also represent the community and give access to those students who feel like they don't belong who don't understand who they are who don't know I'm doing to find something that would help them I wish myself thanks for your time I wasn't going to get up here tonight but I just felt I had to um and I don't remember we had a lot of stuff tonight but I'm here to compose these books being in a school library I was sure can you just give us your name
oh I'm sorry my name is Robert heck and it was 1720 Elm Avenue in the city of Oregon I'm a taxpayer and I go on here okay we're going to make that clear now sir we all belong here thank you I just want to make sure here's what I don't understand is why do clubs that portray sex acts have to be there so that people who are engaged feel good about being gay I'm heterosexual I don't my kids are looking at books portraying heterosexual sex acts in our schools that's what we don't understand what we don't like gays I have a son who is Katie okay I understand the struggles but I don't understand about how having a book in the school portraying oral sex helps that community in and of itself that's what I
don't get okay this isn't about hating these people or discriminating against gay people if gay people want to go and have the kind of sex they want to have that's up to them but we don't need drawings of it in our school libraries that's what I've had to say and that's all I'm going to say and thank you very much good evening May Quinn 310 Sinclair Avenue Sheboygan uh 53081 uh are you able to hear me yeah it could be louder good morning Facebook thank you um it was really with a great pleasure uh that I came here tonight uh because I actually know one of the graduates that graduated and it really was a reminder for me that that is what the school district is really about really celebrating the academic successes of our
students and it was so wonderful to be in a room full with their parents and and friends and family that they the future diplomas I went on the school board for nine years and I can tell you that these are the critical moments that remind you of what our school district is about the education of all our students these are the meetings that school board members really enjoy because these students work so hard for a goal and they achieve it there is much to be proud about our school district I still can't believe our high school students are in the process of building their 25th house this incredible joint Partnership of local businesses trade unions and our students and teachers has allowed a very unique learning opportunity for all our students I could easily spend
my entire three minutes about the many wonderful programs and opportunities in this school district Community input is a wonderful opportunity for the community to share the positive as well as the challenges and I want to thank all of you here tonight for listening to all of us during this time collectively all of you must work together to provide the best education for all of our students as the one person already shared our district is incredibly diverse over 40 different languages are spoken in our schools many different religions and cultures and collectively you are trying to provide the best education for all of them thankfully our school district has a policy already in place in regards to the reconsideration of materials School Board policies need to be fair Equitable and just tonight it was already shared
that this policy that I just mentioned is being followed and three books have been removed it is my hope that you continue to use your policies regarding the reconsideration of materials and any other components of school policy thank you for all that you do for all of our students foreign father of four children who are maybe some may think I don't have a call when I Cooper to speak because I homeschool my children because I want to control what they learn but they have friends that are in the school district are there any schools and they grow up they will grow up with these children that are being potentially exposed to this harmony material and I don't want my role as a father is to protect my children that is the role that if God
gave me judgmentally no matter what it costs if that means standing up here and exposing evil and pornographic material that's in school that's exposed to minors because one gentleman said parents have no choice no the choice is gone when it is in school accessible to anyone this is unacceptable and this is evil and I think this is something that needs to be dealt with thank you yourself hi my name is Ruth William my address is sign up sheet yeah boy I've heard quite a bit of this evening I don't like vain repetition I think a lot of people have expressed you know how they feel in regards to this I am very thankful for the school board I'm very thankful for the position that all of you bring to the table um I think one
thing that was not brought up and it really needs to be brought up is that I know a few people in the room today who have fought for this country and I thank them as well and we don't want to minimize any individual that is in this group my heart breaks youth in this room that's not fake your feelings anymore valid than any other child I wish I could give you the comfort and the love that you need because I know I know that you've seen it I feel it I wish I could get the part of me to you but I can't not this way my child deserves to be innocent as long as they can I'm sorry that your innocence was taken from you I'm sorry that you felt thank you and 42
years of age and I feel like I've lived a lifetime in the last three years I'm asking all of you to come together to do what's right for our children there is going to be a time where they can choose and it's already been explicit they cannot go to stores they cannot go check out certain things until they're 18 years old we already decided that as a society a long time ago my son when he served he could only sign up at 17 years old they couldn't take him early why because he was underage please think of all of these things when it comes to our children they need guidance those books are not guidance or anything but guidance we need true and proper guidance for our children thank you very much oh all right
very good um with the uh if you're online if you'd like to speak please raise your hand to have somebody here foreign [Music] I think that's an excellent point and if it was of that great a concern to you maybe you should have gotten up periodically and looked but your point is taken we will no longer allow people to say that their address is on the list I apologize for whatever reason I am not able to get this individual unmuted and his name is Noah and I would just encourage Noah to write to the board in terms of what he'd like to share with the board he's giving me the thumbs up that heard that I'm sorry Noah I'm just not able to get shot he's saying okay okay I think then we are done
with Community input let's take a real five-minute break in the reconvene at 7 40. thank you thank you all for coming we appreciate your foreign oh yeah we welcome sir Sarah Ruiz Harrison back after struggles with her mom if I can share that and mom is home and in her own bed and we have missed you and we're glad you're back thank you all right we are going to move on to the superintendent's report thank you very much I really appreciate the opportunity to share some things that are going on across the district first of all I want to thank Ryan uh he and I attended the state uh education convention last week um part of the convention it was great to I was able to attend some sessions focused on school funding challenges uh
legal updates about attracting and retaining employees I also and I know showed us before with you but I've chaired a large District caucus which is the 25 largest districts in the state of Wisconsin and we have a meeting four times a year it always takes place one of the meetings during this convention so I had opportunity to facilitate dialogue and discussion across the largest districts in this um in this state which actually accounts for over 80 percent of all students in the state of Wisconsin when you put the top 25 districts it's greater than 80 percent but we had discussions about things that are challenges of large districts things around legal and and funding things around school maintenance uh construction referendum as well as just attracting entertaining and hiring practices as we are all struggling
to ensure that we've got uh hiring so just a wonderful time and thank you Ryan for being our our delegate yield a few minutes to Ryan just uh I may just briefly interjection if you want to see if we can have on the agenda a more detailed report for me because I think there's some some interesting things I learned not only about Equity but also to about a an interesting initiative that Howard Swan Michael school district has put in place um really allowing it really inviting members of the community you know Business Leaders other politicians members of the community to come in and learn more about what exactly a school district does you know it's it's it sounded like it's similar to what um the uh Sheboygan Area Chamber of Commerce is done you know
kind of an education about about how we educate our kids and um and and I think it's something that may need to have a little bit more detailed stuff and yeah in the light but that wasn't of the convention besides the fact that I got two uh feed goats and sheep at a uh at a agricultural high school if you would not think that in Milwaukee would have an egg based high school but they do Milwaukee Foods and they have a farm they've shown their they've shown that they're animals at the State Fair um and um and we were we just missed out on a uh on a you uh lambing because they were they they thought that she was going to go that day and she didn't okay but that was that you know
and that's also something there it gave me a lot of interesting thoughts on how we can incorporate egg into into our urban-ish setup and why don't you provide something in writing for us and we could certainly take a look at that and then piggybacking just on that last discussion I had about hiring practices I just want to mention that you know we continue to work to try to secure and I want to thank Jamie and her team for the work of conducting another round of open interviews on Thursday this past Thursday in the afternoon and then in early evening and then Saturday from 8 to noon um they had over 39 people walking in filling out applications and getting interviewed on the spot so far they're conducting those background checks and conducting other paperwork but
we also also already have offers on the table with a few of those candidates so just another great turnout and thank you again for being creative and trying to continue to Secure staffing for our schools in order to get feedback we always engaged a variety of surveys to give us feedback on the things we're doing really well and what areas that we'd like to see we share with you previously that parents currently have a parent child Giver survey that's out that's open the windows open into February and then we will be conducting Services surveys internally to our customers from a central office standpoint and it's our customers at our buildings to be able to say how are we providing the best service for you from a central office we look forward to looking at that
feedback and sharing information once that is analyzed scholarship season is in full swing for our high school seniors who are looking to get a scholarship for a two-year or four-year institution this past week on Friday when we was a teacher records They had known school for kids Jazz line possewitz a teacher from South High had an idea what if we hold a scholarship support time 27 students showed up on their day off if you will to receive help from jazlyn as well as Terry shershel and a team from spaff to really help to help students and give providing assistance on completing the necessary paperwork for both the local scholarships as well as the spec scholarships so um kudos to jazlin on that on that outstanding creative idea to help kids I also want to give
a shout out to Wayne Heinen our South High band director uh Wayne our Wade excuse me was um wrote an article and was published in the Wisconsin Music musician magazine a Statewide publication talking about uh tips for a thriving band student so it was a different things the band directors can do to ensure that their students are leaders and engaged in their band and other musical curriculars educational practices really helping to excel the band program so congratulations to Wade for having that um uh published uh January 16th our state legislators met with their monthly meeting with the county school superintendents we were provided some updates regarding the state biennium budget process as well as some pending legislation which may be coming down the the pipe it's way early in the budget process um that uh
We've yet to provide a lot of information other than a few things about um some upcoming meetings that will be held across are they reconsidering including the board member representation that discussion came up and at this time they are not it's wonderful that elected officials can communicate with each other yeah but I on a positive note I did have a wonderful opportunity to meet with our newly elected represent representative Benfield um that same afternoon it was just coincidental uh she is meeting with all the nine School superintendents to learn more at counties in the districts that she represents because she doesn't represent all of Sheboygan County obviously but the districts which he represents our Focus was on the Sheboygan Area School District obviously I'll talk a lot about career in college readiness talked about special
education funding numerous supports that are provided to our families for um for example before and after school care credit for cap classes and also about educational achievement and physical transparency not only for the public schools but also for our voucher schools that are within our the Sheboygan Area School District boundary speaking of kids in our schools and wonderful opportunities yesterday had the pleasure along with uh Kelly and Eric to be able to be the judges at the Annual Spelling Bee competition we thank Acuity for hosting and it's always great in their theater of the round uh impressive facility and it rides on the ferris wheel after but we had a great opportunity after 12 rounds pleased to announce that Annika tawari a student an 8th grader in our district was crowned the champion and is
on to Madison for the next level competition I can just say as a as a judge and I'm sure Kelly and Eric can jump in there but I happen to meticulously Mark letters to make sure that they I was hearing the words and some of those words I tell you wow wow some of them wow so and then lastly I know I've had an opportunity for this board to share with each and every one of you my plans to retire during the 23-24 school year and last Thursday I did send a communication out as I shared with you to all of our School Employees I've been in District for 24 years so this is my 24th year in the district and I've had the pleasure of serving here in the Sheboygan Area School District and
a variety of roles from a technology trainer an elementary principal and multiple roles here in our central office and obviously the last four and a half as the superintendent of schools and it's been a pleasure throughout that time I've been amazed about the tremendous amount of work the passion the dedication that staff displays in order to provide each and every student a high quality learning opportunity provide our families with supports that that they need and the services that they need to help raise their children and to support and watch the staff support each other and to accomplish our goals and you heard our mission being read before and I was shaking my head because we clearly know that mission um over the next year I remain committed to the Sheboygan Area School District and looking
at what lies ahead for our students and families but I wanted to make sure that I announced it here as well and for the community and really leads into your next agenda item which is my successor so I'll end there and let you roll right into your miscellaneous item a but thank you for the opportunity board and um not going just yet so uh and that does take us to uh um Item B uh a under miscellaneous our superintendent's succession plan David um just quickly I guess to cap it off um I probably know besides the best because we've spent a lot of time together over the last probably two years in particular um I I think that you know what happened was someone decided when they found out that he was in your superintendent
we're going to come up with every possible crazy scenario to throw out a superintendent that we can and we're going to give them all to you throughout your career and um you've handled them all um with just a great professionalism Democratic leader for us you've helped me immensely and I've been on board for other things but um I just think about the growth that I made this board president under your leadership I appreciate that but um professionalism the way you handle things especially when they got some personal pretty bitter at times we went through some pretty wild stuff and um if you stayed the course you pivoted when you needed to you're relied on a really good team to help you get through it help them grow as well I just really deserve to thank
you which is Madam president um Mr gallianetti wanted to provide how many years he's been on hold but I actually during the convention uh Mr gallinetti was recognized for his quarter Century on the Sheboygan Area School District Court you know it feels like 25 it's only 20. oh there we go no kidding okay thank you Dave for those kind words well we'll have nice words to say maybe about David when when his term ends but uh thanks for answering those words um so we're going to talk just a little bit about the superintendent's succession plan that the board has been working on um we have decided as a board to begin the process and end the process with an internal candidate um and we believe that that process will go smoothly um we're meeting next
Tuesday there's no rest for the wicked January or yeah January 31st um to talk an open session about the um the qualities that we are looking for in a superintendent how we're going to approach the process our timeline is is although Seth will be here for another year our timeline is uh is um risk and so we do hope to move forward with um with our plans we are currently contacting or in contact with a awazby consultant who will help us we believe with interview questions setting up an interview process to make sure that our candidate has an opportunity to speak with the board and others and hopefully we will have a candidate to recommend to the to the community uh in the near future Seth what am I missing I think one of the
things that that's really helpful um in with with my announcement and that process is is the ability to if you know as that plays out we have had a wealth of of of good work that's been able to be done as I transition from from Joe and that process I think that's important and I think he was a board meeting next meeting next week to begin that process is very important as we look at next steps for the Sheboygan Area School District um I think it's very important I think the only thing I admit I wanted to add to that is next week because it's a working session we said we would provide um a light dinner so I wanted to make sure for the board members that you knew that was there as well
starting at six o'clock Mark I'm unfortunately under subpoenaed to testify up in Eagle River next Tuesday so I'm not sure if I'll be able to attend and I'm not sure the ability to attend remotely at that point uh is the lawsby representative going to be part of the not sure yet okay not sure yet we're still talking um and I did want to follow up on what Seth said that um this district has had very good luck with internal candidates moving forward and the opportunity for um assuming all goes well for an internal candidate to have a Year's worth of mentoring really means we don't lose any momentum we don't miss a step we move forward at this at the pace that we are which is quite intense and so uh we're looking forward to
it any other questions all right moving along uh let's talk about our Charter School reauthorization Jake Eric Katie is here Katie byney is here and Mr Del Rey so please have a seat wonderful um Jake are you going to take it away I'm going to start them off you got it um we need to collector here clickers here Katie and I just want to uh thank Eric Katie Mr Delray for their work on this obviously within the Sheboygan area school district one thing that we've always valued is this choice and opportunities for our children and Lake Country academies certainly provides a great option for our kids and as many happy smiling uh kids that are that are learning lots and having fun um in the process so we continue to Value choice we appreciate everything
that they do and they bring to our district I love working with Katie it's a great great partnership it's been a good transition um and I think Eric for his work on this I'm going to hand it over to you first there okay so again we're excited to to share many of the successes of Lake Country and then uh recommend a reauthorization for a for another five years here so um we have been partnering with like country Academy since 2007-2008 um it's been a nice working relationship with with Katie and from predecessors and heaven and their board and I think it's been a mutually beneficial partnership throughout that throughout that time I think they'll kind of highlight some of the successes I don't want to steal all their Thunder from them um but I think
you'll be impressed by it by the successes that they've had and that we expect them to continue to have from a contract standpoint the vast majority of the contract is a continuation of things that have been in place already we have been working with with Mark on One financial piece I just wanted to be upfront with the board about what that says so I'm going to read it to you and kind of try to explain to you a little bit um so we're talking about the allotment that Lake Country Academy receives from the district and in future years and how increases to the district people allocation would be transferred to like country Academy so I'm looking on page seven where it says in subsequent years the per pupil FTE rate for LCA students will be
determined using the per pupil member amount allowed under the revenue limit and per pupil categorical Aid the amount LCA receives will change at the same dollar amount as the change received by the district so just to give you a little bit understanding on that so previously when um the district received an increase in our pupil allocation that amount was transferred to Lake Country as the same percentile so if the district got a one percent increase in the country would get a one percent increase to what they're currently receiving we change it so that that Gap doesn't continue to to grow so the district were to receive a 200 whatever that amount is that amount District per student would go directly to like country Academy is that because it's not instrumentality is it different from the
contracts with the other charter schools that are the amounts that they get our networks yes yeah and I guess the other question I would have is it still the full amount that we get from the state for people that we transfer the entire amount no so the the the amount that we get as a as a district there's a a percent of that which I think was 8 700 current 87 87 94 um is what gets transferred to like type presenters uh part of that that stays with the district is some of the things that go into our partnership but in the future any increases that we get through the biennial budget that total increase will go directly how much per student that we would get would go to that okay what about the services
that we provide to that country for those so that would be within that within that chunk that I guess that currently is the difference well then why wouldn't we take a percentage of the per pupil increase otherwise I mean that's just basic economics the percentage I mean I get it and I want to have with you guys as much as we can but we still have to be fiscally responsible for the services that we're providing to the school yeah none of that market checked in talk within that yeah so so just to put it in perspective So currently if the under the revenue limit and then the people Aid uh the district receives eleven thousand five hundred children three dollars per student we pass along eight thousand seven ninety seven to the instrumentalities um what
happens when as we were doing it as a percent uh the gap of what we receive and uh what we pass along that Gap has grown over the years because you know it's a percent and really what we felt was more Equitable was that we didn't want to take money from the district but if if 50 there's a 50 increase in that that we should keep that same Gap and pass that along too well to me what would be Equitable is that they're getting 8 000 out of 11 000 that's essentially eight eleven so any increase that we get they should get 811 so that would seem to make a lot more physically sense that it's that they you know we we arrived at that percentage as being palatable for both sides I guess any
increase should be based on that same rate of percentage I would think because we still have our expenses and costs and the support that you provide to them I don't know why we would give them the entire amount that is increased and I think when we Eric and I looked at comparables with what other non-instrumentalities today we're getting and uh we just felt that the Gap that when we set that rate back in the old contract it was compatible and over the years it's it hasn't been comparable to what other not its fatalities have been getting from there from the district so this is a five-year contract this is five years yeah um in the last two years as you know there's there's been no increase so uh like us they've been stuck with the
same same Revenue amount for the last last two years a lot of questions oh okay so I guess before I turn it over to Katie and Kevin I guess I just wanted to again reiterate um I think you'll be excited and impressed by what they're about to show you and I would strongly recommend the real authorization for another five years put that on internally thanks sir uh yes I am Katie byney I am the principal at Lake Country Academy this is actually my first year as principal however I've been at Lake Century Academy for the past 20 . I'm in different roles serving as a teacher and instructional um coach and as an assistant principal for the past seven years so it is truly my privilege to serve our families at LCA and I really
do believe that LCA is much part of me as I am of LCA um I am happy to be staying next to Kevin Del Rey who is our president of our board of directors at LTA he's also a parent of one of our sixth graders at our school um it has been a pleasure working with the sasd administration over the past five years and really much longer for myself but we appreciate all the support at LCA that we do receive so from Seth and Jake and Eric and Mark and Jamie and Jason and Kelly and Jim and Jamie I think sometimes I apologize but those are the people that were in contact a lot with just to make sure that we are staying with us and courses to what we are supposed to be doing
and we just really appreciate they're always willing to take our phone calls and answer any questions that we may have just to make sure we're doing the right thing um so um we have the mission of Lake Country Academy is really out to be recognized as a leader in education through our direct instruction and core knowledge those are two curriculum areas that focus on our math and reading and also on Science History and literature along with art and music and we do that within our environment of core virtues or our core values we have been an honest human mentality Charter School um since actually 2010 we started as an instrumentality Charter School in 2007. we are a pre-k through eighth grade learning environment and we just well in 2020 we finished our two-track school so
we have two classrooms per grade um and we have an and Pre-K and then PM prepaid um like I said we our pillars really are our direct instruction and core knowledge and our core virtues and that's really what we Center everything around so high expectations for academics and then also making sure that we have the character education that we want our students to be leaving our school with and making sure we develop that to the 10 years that we are fortunate to have them um we currently have just over 420 students about 430 actually um and that is that number has been pretty stable over the last few years since we have um finished our two two tracks um one thing that is in our um contract is perfect involvement that's really important to Charter
Schools and we feel that we have at least 80 percent of our families involved in school um opportunities through volunteering and through events family events that we put on so we feel that our parents are really important part of our school and our family and our community and without our families uh we wouldn't have the support that that we really feel for our staff and for the curriculum that we're doing at LCA obviously um we always want to look at our academics um and so we have our math and our reading proficiency um so LCA consistently outperforms uh both the state and the district schools on our forward tests we also give the star test to see the growth from year after year and we appreciate sasd allowing us to use that program in connection
with them um and really making sure that our students are making the gains over a school year rather than will be just at a one once a year snapshot with the forward we really are kind of looking at that star test for our students and I want to highlight too along with the academics is really our staff so we have 50 staff 40 which are teaching and instructional Staffing at LCA and we have very high retention for our staff and our teacher which I think is a really great benefit to our students so um we have staff that really know the curriculum and have been there for many years so they have really become masters of that content and are able to really work with our students both students that have academic needs and ones
that you need to push a little bit further so I think that's a great benefit at LCA obviously with our math and reading we credit our Saxon Math that's the curriculum that we use and our SRA reading Mastery Program that we use as well and then along with that core knowledge to teach science and history and science and it just all feeds into the literacy that we want our students to have as they as they move through our school and then on to higher education many of our students um actually move on to North and South High School especially these last few years and so parents are always eager to ask how they do in high school and they do do very well um here we have our LCA enrollment so you can see our
friend is pretty um even we continue to want to increase we do have capacity probably for about 465 470 students so um so we do have some room that we can throw especially in our Pre-K area um but that picture there is our Lake Country Academy's first two track class that graduated in May of 2020. Unfortunately they graduated in their driveways as we drove around and um graduated each one individually but uh that was taken probably in February after the school year before um the pandemic hit um as we continue to work on enrollments like I said we're trying to improve our marketing ensure that all families know about Lake Country Academy and we appreciate you know being highlighted sometimes on the sasd website and just having word out of Who We Are yeah I
believe there was probably in 2015 uh when the school board at that time had talked to us about increasing the diversity of Lake Country Academy to better align with um the population that is here in Sheboygan so I just wanted to highlight that a little bit um so we continue to work with students with disabilities and we have students that have all sorts of needs at LCA that we continue to support we have increased our staffing for special ed to be able to support those students and I do truly appreciate the collaboration that we have with sasd to manage which students are getting support and everyone the staff at sasd supporting our IEPs and our IEP meetings and and just being really integral in working with all those students and meeting those needs um we
have increased our students for pre-reduced lunch obviously the past two years may not be the best indication as forms have not needed to be filled out so I'm not sure how accurate that 123 is I'm going to say that's probably higher but we will see in the next few years um as if families need to continue filling out the forms to to report that um and then our multi-language learners have increased from 18 to 47 and we have increased our staff being there as well we now have two full-time ml teachers that work with our students kindergarten through um eighth grade to give them the support that they need to be successful um at school right finances so we continue to work on um the per pupil allotment that has given to us and try
to keep within that range we have been helped by the Astro Grant so there's been a privilege to work with Mark and his staff to dip into those Grant monies over those last two years to help us with resources that may not have been available to us and to make sure our students were also continuing to move forward in their academics during the panel and then as we continue to look forward um obviously again we want to continue our high academic standards for our our students we want to continue to serve the families of Sheboygan in our academically focused and forward to school we're pleased with our enrollment growth parent satisfaction and student growth especially through the pandemic and we continue to hope to grow in all of those areas when we specify you Mr
Delray is there anything you want to add uh excuse me I think uh Katie did a fantastic job at summing up what we've been able to accomplish uh not only as a school of family but specifically on the goals uh of the last Charter uh so at this time uh I'll leave it to what she said I don't know is if I can make it better fewer words most welcome let me tell you board members questions mark uh I was hoping to see a representation of the makeup of the ethnicity or race of the students and whether or not that's improved in our diversity and whether it's reflective of the community in general like yes it was the other sad sasp schools yeah so um I do not have that at my fingertips right now
I can send it to you but I would say these look comparable to Lincoln Erdman incredibly which is what I would say I believe we're at about 66 white and then well you don't need this I mean okay take your word on that okay thank you Ryan um thank you madam president I'm just looking at the operations Surplus deficit maybe I'm a little confused um you know I see that there are negative signs um for 2018 through 2021 and that you are projecting a deficit for this year through the end of the um through the end of the contract am I reading that correctly that is what we currently have for our our numbers however you are uh unfortunately that's the reality that we've lived in and and forecast um however what keeps us afloat
and what keeps us out of the red at the end of the day uh you'll notice in 21 and 22 there was a surplus shown easy explanations that are expenses are a lot lower that school year uh speaking to the deficit and how we overcome that uh Lake Country Academy is uh he is very fortunate to be the uh to be the recipient of some benefactors in the community who have either had family members come through Lake Country uh and and certainly are aware of its of its value uh or you know current family members and so on we also hold an annual fundraiser every year uh which we've titled ShakeOut over the last number of years and it's a uh it's a per plate cost we invite the families friends and community members and
so on uh for a an adult evening of entertainment and and food and merriment uh and that has served as a very good fundraiser for us uh over the last number of years and I noticed some Mr Lester is trying very hard not to break out any complete smile I mean Shake hot is a fun events [Music] well on that happy note are there any other questions I think you have a question um are you looking to have your goal um be the same as your organ Area School District in the diverse aspect of it and if it is can you share with me because it looks if I'm not mistaken the guy we don't think makeup of our students or training school district is the minority is the majority and if that is the
case it doesn't look like that would be at LCA right yeah so I don't know if we would love for it to just continue to increase um we do have some things that limit us like Transportation um right now we have two buses that can get students to and from school and so once those buses are full we don't have other options for getting students to the school um but as far as like marketing and making sure that we're advertised all over the the city we're definitely working on on that um the other pieces um welcome to my world uh so yeah I can speak to it a little bit from a district standpoint too they're trending in that direction right so I just pulled their their data and I'm always real careful to speak
that up publicly because what you're going to see on wise Dash if someone looks this up versus what we have internally doesn't always match until we hash that out with DPI but in 2122 they're 60 white um about 23 Hispanic 1.8 black um that Trend that's that's a that's a trend in the right direction toward looking like our district I would assume that's happened over the last few years as well so those numbers even look better we can't verify that yet um but they are they are trending in the right direction that's a significant increase over the last time we had this oh boy yes significant any other questions comments hi sir for our for our family families and so continuing to our families about you know bringing their family members in has been something
that we've been talking about David and if they have a good experience then I would like to move simply approve of the authorization of what country The Academy Charter School contractors any other discussion yes well first of all I want to say LCA is a valuable resource to this community and as being part of his district and I'm very happy with your enrollment increase and the improved student performance and the level of student performance uh family engagement should be a model for all of our schools even though that's always been amazing in LCA and I'm very happy to see the improved diversity because I know it was woefully poor the last time we really had a big discussion about it that being said I the contract is a contract and I don't like the financial
agreement that we've come to uh and if it were you know if you guys I think it's a real quandary because you're running a deficit now so I can see where those Monies are are needed and necessary but at the same time I I can't I don't think it would be fiscally responsible to the entire District we're just handing over the whole increase as opposed to a percentage increase or renegotiate a more appropriate percentage of what we get from the state it you know that can be and then Justified why that percentage needs to be increased from what it has always been so and uh if you want to speak to it director if I may um Mr havertine and I uh as well as Katie and Eric was in conversations Mark was in conversations
and so on the funding uh was always a fun topic when that came up in the meeting is as I'm sure funding always says uh one thing that we that we realized is that the Lake Country Academy doesn't always receive that Delta of dollars every year per student so you know for instance you know take a look uh you know Mark highlighted uh that currently the district receives 11 533 Lake Country receives eight thousand seven hundred and ninety seven dollars occasionally in the past when certain special education needs have come up that we weren't able to support we were able to lean on the district and that support was there invaluable sometimes that special ed student isn't isn't there in the school that that Delta is still there it's it's a it's an insurance cost
it's how at the end of the day we we kind of decided to to look at it as the the money that the district gets and then the money that Lake Country gets there's always going to be that difference for the cost of insurance and then the cost of services when needed the the services I don't know necessarily don't increase in cost to you because the state is giving more money so your cost is is what it is every every so often cost of everything continues it always goes up yes absolutely that's my concern absolutely um you know we certainly we want to make sure everyone's solving uh but that's that's the best way that that I could maybe help explain how we came to this um and and where we all came to a
good place on it I don't take issue with like country at all you negotiate a very good contract in your favor my question I I think that the administration is recommending approval of this we are I'm more questioning as to why so the Board of Education can go along with the recommendation of the administration that I think he does not seem to be fiscally pulling sound you know I know it's not going to probably the bottom line here is okay budget coming up with uh you know with the capital that doesn't agree with our governor so who knows when that seems to be cashed out that'll be some fun talks coming up this spring so I mean yeah we just so unfortunately I totally respect everything that you guys do and value your position here
but on behalf of the entire District I can't vote in favor of approving the contract as far as the financial portion goes yeah I understand Mark where you're coming from I know we're a lot of discussions and and that we had to have as an administrative team to look at that cost differential and the way that we were seeing it track over time and rightfully a question that was raised by the country was we're seeing that as you got as the district got X dollars we always Reserve this percent of the budget as the district got more dollars per student Lake Country wasn't getting the same if you will percent increase and so it can continue to grow that that dollar figure and so one of the things that a rightful question was where do
other non-instrumentality districts sit where do our our internal Anonymous mentality um Charter Schools sit in terms of per cost and what are those actual resources that are spent as Kevin mentioned as opposed to those that they need and insurance and we we agree that was a a good term Kevin and I and Eric and Mark as we talked and Katie but uh from some year to year we saw that that percentage of what Lake Country got out of what this state was providing to the sasd was growing where where we weren't able always to justify that continue as that increased that our cost as from the district side wasn't always continue to increase and these are new dollars coming in so if we get zeros they get zeros it wasn't a built-in per cent increase
per year but it really helped to flatten out that our the withholding peace would stay the same again we're projecting costs over the next five years um we have the reserve in the contract always on both sides of the equation to come back to the table at any time or we feel like hey there's a problem here we're going south and this is not working we have the ability and you do as a board to reopen that contract they can request it as well from like country so there was some stop Gap Provisions in there that if if we get to a point where where um within the first years of those contracts that this is not an area where we're seeing it's negative impacting other schools in the school budgets then we would have
to come back to the board and say we've got to open this contract up and renegotiate so we felt that that this was was the fair thing to do and um it um was certainly one that uh was a lot of thought behind as well in terms of the historical spending amount so it is our recommendation to do that I do understand Mark where you're coming from and um we have that same concern in terms of when we started the conversation of how does this go against that and there was obviously other requests that were made that quite Craig frankly we didn't we're not bringing forward as part of this contract as well David uh I appreciate where you're coming from I was going to voice and stuff just touched on it but where I'm
comfortable is frankly in most of these contracts probably all of these Charter contracts I would argue in the district's always at the upper hand and we've always been able to go back to the table at any time and knowing that and also knowing you alluded to the talks in Madison which are going to be really interesting there's no guarantee that there's going to be an increase over the next six years for the foreseeable future so knowing that is going to launch that closely I think they're going to come back to us if something goes up and they're going to come back pretty quickly well I contract is a contract then if they are already running a deficit why in the world would they come back to the table to negotiate getting less money that we're
already committed to for five years that's I mean I guess they run the risk of us not re-upping after the five years sure but you know they've also demonstrated but the fact of the matter is that we have to look out for the entirety of the district not just one school yeah and I think we are because I think they've consistently demonstrated an ability to cover that deficit they spoke tonight they've got a number of vehicles in place that they're able to cover it those aren't going to be changing anytime soon that additional financial support they've always done a great job of fundraising this fundraising events are very successful um again I I understand where you're coming from but I just don't think it's going to be an issue which is why I'm going to
support it Sue um Katie just a question on enrollment as far as school choice now I noticed on the sign you're already accepting applications that's right and then you know like our district we have right Jake only a certain time that parents can uh first school choice right yeah school's choice is open and it'll run through now we run through phases right so we'll close round one in time to open up for open enrollment open enrollment will run and then we'll open up round two and that'll run until schools are full so it pretty much runs all the time but just in difference if they didn't have the paperwork yet what I'm getting at is you have open enrollment all the time correct as far as school choice if somebody wants to come in because
I'm looking at your numbers so that's also another possibility because you do accept students true we do run pretty parallel to what the school district ask for a school choice like February 8th is our cutoff for our first Lottery and that sort of thing but then yes students can apply all the way through or if you have somebody coming in the summer oh absolutely yeah so enrollment also has a big part explain it because I think you have more students that's right yes okay thank you do we have any other charter schools that are getting the full amount of student increases or are we anticipating that we're going to be going to that with any other new contracts coming up uh we would if we're going to treat one of our non-instrumentalities that way we
would recommend that we would do the same at Sheboygan Leadership Academy that are non-instrumentalities as opposed to our district Charter Schools just based on the level of support and services that we provide our non-instrumentality versus instrumentality charge when where are we at with didn't we just approve their contract we we approved their contract was at last year the year before apparently approved the two years ago yeah so but right now they don't have the same deal correct and so we would be coming back to you at some point to say In fairness excuse me where does that fit in with the equity that we always talk about they gotta wait for three more years before they can get their increase no we would be coming back to to you on that this is the first
opportunity to bring forward LCA we will be coming back with SLA so we'll be hearing that soon yes as an addendum to their contract Rebecca um consumer deficit was related because I mean I see numbers here from 2018 that drop in operational cost was a hundred thousand dollars and I know there were some ridiculous things we were going through at that time so there's a lot of that spent money that exactly yeah he isn't going to go to my kids anymore that's the last one we pretty much heard from very minimal technology to having to need lots of Technology yeah I would just I was thinking that that would offset some of them all right any other questions discussion this is geared towards us FMJ if I remember right and correct me if I'm wrong
we actually wrote a phone track for another charter school that was a Montessori up in uh of Cleveland um due to low enrollment but also due to the fact that they had no more money they they trained their their um their fund balance and we and we had essentially closed the school because there was no um because we were not going to support them am I am I remembering that right correct okay so we do have a history of breaking contracts when when there's a when there's a Episcopal of urgency and those provisions and Eric can quote the page I can't quote the page and I'm sure it's not what Katie and Kevin and the rest of the team want to hear breaking contracts but there's provision on both sides of that equation if this
isn't a mutually beneficial relationship then then there is an out on both sides and one of those is is being physically responsible having enrollments obviously some other statutory pieces in terms of of providing services in the appropriate means and that that's there and likewise they have the ability to notify you as a board saying they no longer want to to have their contract with us based on X Y and Z they would have the ability then to go to an outside contract provider to operate their school through other authorizers um so that's that's an opportunity or an option but we know we value the relationship and want to maintain and again are recommending this five-year contract knowing that there are Provisions in there if either side has issues or concerns any other questions concerns all
right see none all in favor of the motion State Eye any opposed sure vote sign motion passes thank you so much oh I'm sorry I didn't give you enough time it's all right I'm keeping the meeting going sometimes I just get into the swing of it you know so all right thank you very much thank you thank you thank you for coming thank you all right we're going to move on to item C adoption the second reading to delete the Board of Education policy 2416.01 parental police access to library media center information Jake do you just want to bring us up as to why we're doing this we are so we just passed policy 2522 and this policy is verbatim uh within the new policy so we always pass the new policy first and then

the following um as far as revised board policies from number three to number 10 um Ed committee uh Jimmy did update us and continue it's just basically just verbiage updates so therefore I would recommend uh approval of those revised board education policies number three through number 10. all right do we have a second is there secular puzzle I'm not puzzled oh well good I'm right there with you go go go maybe just a little tired I don't know fired in the eyes maybe is there any discussion any questions hearing none all in favor State aye aye any opposed strip outside yeah very good Ryan take us on to facilities if you would all right the most exciting community in the entire sasd facilities Recreation and theater I move approval of items number one and two

that they they are authorized to use the district name alcohol mascot Etc so that was added the other thing was that we're referencing a money handling uh policy 6630 so that's referenced in here as far as how Student Activity fund monies are handled and then there was a change that was not a Neola update but we felt uh that it was for our practice is that the Student Activity groups are approved by District administration they're not brought forward to the board that's what our current policy station we'd like to change that to be in line with our our practice that when a group comes forward that has the district administrator would make approval of that group foreign all right see none all in favor say die any opposed trip outside last time okay any questions
very generous gifts and we're we're very grateful uh if there's no discussion on Faber State Eye any opposed share about Psy Santino Mr Laster well nothing to report on that all right very good special board if I may I just wanted to we had item number six um the water damage and if I may just give a quick update I know some of you are wondering where we're at uh subfloors have been put in construction is ongoing uh Joe Vollmer let me know the target date for being able to get back in these rooms and complete it is February 21st so things are moving right along uh but I just wanted to do a quick one as long as it was on the agenda and I could sneak it in quick all right so thank
you very much um all right and um human growth and development suck okay I'm gonna turn over to Eric and Eric I'm sorry uh we had a well-attended uh Zoom meeting and we went we spent a lot of time going through uh the implementation of the changes that were brought before the board the last time so there were a large number of procedural changes and things of that sort that that took quite a bit of time uh but we brought everybody up to speed and I think everybody understands how it's moving forward um there are a couple of things uh relating to spots on the committee um we need one more parent that's going to be that's posted because we upped the number from four parents to five for the board's request uh we also
have a Miss we have an opening as a student we only have one student who has responded today and we need two according to the recommendation so that also will be posted um it was a reiteration that at present we will not have a three-year limit so people if they choose to continue on and want to do that will be able to do so uh and we went through the officers uh there was an election for that do I have to bring that before the board for approval no I think we can update them if we like like sure please do so our president our chair is Jeff lismer uh our our chair elect uh is John Paul and our secretary is Tracy house thank you just in case we didn't know you the one
piece I just wanted to clarify can you talked about the three-year piece so at the end of three years the person would have to the position would be open but they could continue to seek three appointments thank you thank you for clarifying that um and also just looking forward to the next meeting people got tasks or volunteered to take on tasks a lot of the things that we're looking to do just to kind of give you look forward uh we are looking into a review of the state standards and the statutes so that everybody understands what the current ones are and how they apply to us uh and we are reaching out to other districts because we're certainly not the only District dealing with this issue of updating materials and then a rather controversial subject
areas so we're kind of getting reach out and get a sense from other districts how they're handling this and what they're finding and what works uh and also we are reaching out to other school boards to see where they are on this issue so uh if anybody on the board has information they would like to be considered looking forward we're obviously very open to that okay questions for Kay or Eric and so I have one uh more thing we had a Community member position open that was posted yes uh we said uh three people that uh were interested in the position um you can see some of our discussion in the meeting notes uh but the the team is recommending uh the appointment of Kelsey Engelhart uh Chelsea received recommendations from six of the nine
people on the committee so that's what we're looking for the board to make that the formal appointment that the committee is making the recommendation to you baby you want to make that motion oh yeah I'd just like to give a little background on Kelsey Anderson said she does work at Safe Harbor and she also is working on a counseling degree and has background the committee majority of the Committees that would be useful so yes I'd like to move that we place Kelsey on the committee second discussion Mark what position breakdown does she fulfill community community member and how many community members she learning association with Planned Parenthood Safe Harbor is my understanding all right any and she resides in our description okay excellent thank you all right if there's no further discussion we did it
Mark easy um let's see I'm totally lost we have a motion in a second right yes all right all in favor stay aye aye any opposed share votes hi very good thank you spec uh minutes are there for you to read I'm not going to read them to you or share anything oh all right any questions for Seth all right uh future meeting dates we are going to be meeting on January 31st at 6 pm and um Jenny did a really good job ordering last time so you know so thank you just a hint s 14th and the 28th David yes yes poured out right beyond the agenda some board members don't want to have their work done and that is a very good question February the 14th Valentine's Day you can share the love
with me on Valentine's Day okay very good anything else for the good of the order see none on uh is there a motion to adjourn all right before we vote um I think we all owe Jenny a decent threat debt a deep debt of gratitude for her fingers so much typing unbelievable so thank you yeah so um all in favor say aye aye we are adjourned thank you
