He's perfect. Call to order this meeting of the Stoton Area School District Board of Education. Miss Darmmo, will you call the role? >> Miss Mia Cryo, >> here. >> Miss Don Garcia, >> here. >> Mr. Zach Masa Myers >> here. Miss Lisa Pew >> here, >> Miss Allison Sorg >> here, >> Dr. Sharon Milin Bartlett >> here, >> student rep Michaela Becker >> here, >> President Jill Patterson >> here, >> and Tim Bubon and Jim Moser are excused. >> All right, next on the agenda is public comment. Uh seeing no members of the public approaching the podium this evening and seeing that there are no written public comments submitted in advance, we can move on to item 2B, the legislative update. There are a couple of uh upcoming public hearings happening in the legislature this
week and in the coming days. Uh, starting tomorrow, Tuesday, January 6th, the Senate Committee on Education will have a hearing on five different bills, four of which have already passed the assembly. So, that means as they move through the Senate, they're getting closer to being signed or potentially vetoed by the governor. Um that particular hearing tomorrow in the Senate committee on education will discuss a pilot program for the professional development of science teachers um including including various pregnancy related subjects within human growth and development curriculum. schoolboard policies on a people's name change, requiring the state to participate in the federal tax credit program for contributions to scholarship granting organizations and substitute teaching at private choice schools. >> Hang on one second. Are we good? Okay, back back live. Um the Assembly Committee on Criminal Justice
and Public Safety will uh also have a hearing on January 6 and it will be on one education related bill which uh AB677 which would create a crime for grooming a child. On January 7th, the Senate Committee on Universities and Technical Colleges will be having a remote hearing or I should say an off-site hearing in PWA at the technical college and they will be updating the state's dual enrollment program regulations or discussing bills that relate to that as well as um altering the state's minority teacher loan program to pro uh apply broadly to all disadvantaged candidates. Um, just a reminder that anyone can testify on any of these bills at these public hearings. Um, you go to the Capitol, you write out a a slip, and you um you don't have to have written comments.
You can just say that you want to speak. You could even just register in favor or against any of these bills. It's just a good thing to know how to do. You'll find information on the bills and on the committee agendas at the legislative website which is www.legis.wisconsin.gov. So legis.wisconsin.gov. Uh before the holidays, the governor signed several bills into the law that we've been talking about here. one related to parental notification of alleged sexual sexual mis misconduct by a school staff member and another one um for allowing he vetoed also the one allowing um certain federally chartered youth membership organizations to provide informations to people's on public school property. Oh, I'm sorry. He signed both of those into law. I got confused. Those two I just talked about now are now law. He did veto
several bills. We've also been talking about access to public high schools for military recruiters, academic and career planning services which are provided to pupils and requiring the reporting of certain data on college student costs and outcomes. And then also um one that would have uh reduced um in rigor some uh requirements for teacher preparatory programs. So those were the three that he vetoed before the holidays. um might have heard in the news that there's been some federal action related to child care. The Trump administration said it's freezing child care funds to all states until they provide some more verification and data. Um in Wisconsin there that's we typically vouchers for families go to Wisconsin shares and there's some concern about how this sort of um additional burden might may or may not affect already kind
of fragile child care centers. So, just something to watch for related to our 4K programs. Um, oh, and finally, um, we'll talk about upcoming meetings, but our outreach committee workg group is meeting tomorrow virtually at five o'clock. Uh, or is it six? Is that fine? I can't remember. Um, but anyway, we'll be talking about the WASBY resolutions. Um, which we will vote on at our next meeting, our full board meeting. And this is really important to get feedback on kind of what direction we want the schoolboard association lobbies to go. And that's all that I have. >> That's it. That's it today. >> Okay. More next time. >> Okay. Um, does anyone have any questions for Lisa? I am on the website. I was wanting to look more into that thing that's taking place at
WCTC about dual enrollment. Where on the website would I begin? >> Yes. So, if you're on the legislaturator's website and you're interested in that particular hearing, you would look up the Senate Committee on Universities and Technical Colleges. So, there should be a tab for committees and then you'll find the Senate Committee on Universities and Technical Colleges. And then over on the left there should be a link that says hearings should be hyperl and if you click on that it's going to give you the agenda and the address and the times and all those things. >> Gotcha. Okay. Thank you. >> Yeah. >> Any other questions for Lisa? >> All right. >> Sorry. So you my first thought when you mentioned the federal child care um requiring some extra information was 4K and there that is
a reasonable concern. >> Um what what I was able to read is first of all the department of children and families hasn't received any formal directive from the Trump administration yet. So it's not entirely clear what will be required. Um, however, in some of the news article information that I looked at, um, the child care association says they think Wisconsin is well, uh, set up to deal with, uh, because we already collect a lot of data that the federal government is requiring. So, some of those >> collection pieces are in place. However, the person was also careful to say that child care centers are already running on such slim margins and um just really kind of overburdened, have a workforce shortage, especially in Wisconsin, that any sort of additional requirement or burden could be could
be um problematic for a very fragile system. So, I don't know if all of our 4K sites accept child um um the shares the child care shares vouchers or I'm not sure how I looked on the DCF website. I couldn't see they didn't list them individually. So, I don't know if that is something that's unique to our sites. >> I'm not I'm not sure. I would have to take a look into that and see. >> All right. Any other questions for Lisa? Seeing no questions in the virtual realm or in the room. Thank you for that update. Uh the next item was workg groupoup reports. However, no workg groupoups have met um since we met as a board last. So we are on to item 2D, the student representative report. >> Okay, sounds good. Okay,
so for some activities, um, all of the schools participated in dressup days before winter break. So the top picture, I'm pretty sure was crazy hair day at Sand Hill. Um, and then student council also handed out candygram cane grams to every student at the high school on the Friday before break. And then the high school will also be having a winter dance on January 31st. And the tickets will be $5 and all proceeds are going to be going to the Dayne County Humane Society. Um, and then ready. Okay. So for athletics, um the boys wrestling team competed in the bystate challenge in on um December 28th and 29th and that was held in lacrosse. Um I believe there were over 70 teams participating and Cade Splinter placed second and Braden Brider and Gatlin M placed
sixth. At the bystate challenge, girls wrestling also competed and Kylie Soderling placed ninth and Emily Matheni placed 10th. Um, boys basketball beat Evansville on January 3rd, 46-37. Um, the boys swim team placed seventh at the Verona Invitational on December 30th, and the team also placed eighth in the 200 medley relay. Boys basketball will be playing Fort Atkinson tomorrow at home. And then girls basketball plays Edgewood at home on Thursday. Um, so the grades 6 through 12 had their winter orchestra concert before break. Um, and then students in orchestra, band, and the magical singers performed for all three elementary schools on December 19th. And then the magical singers also had the opportunity to perform at the governor's residence on December 18th. And then they also carolled in Madison on December 20th. And that is all I
have. >> Is that you in the crown? >> Yes, I'm in the red in this middle. >> That you with the crown. [laughter] >> It looks like a crown. I don't know if that's >> Yes. And it was actually very cool. We also saw Tony Ivers while we were caroling in Madison. He was just walking the street. [laughter] >> Way to represent. >> Um, are board members allowed to buy tickets to the winter dance? >> I do not believe so. No. You can crash it if you'd like. >> Oh, there's an idea for later. Okay, thank you. Uh, we are on to item three, Dr. Keyser's report. >> I have a short report coming in into the new year's. First one is, uh, happy 2026. I hope everyone had, um, a good and relaxing couple
of weeks here. Um, our last board meeting being the Monday right before we went into winter break. Um, I emailed the board um, just going into winter break about um, the district audit. Um, this is much like we did last year. Um, our we do an annual audit. That audit comes out honor um, in the month of December um, going into January and we post um, these on our district website along with our monthly financials. So, um we received one question that um we provide an answer for. I will um forward that on to the full board um later tonight. But if any other board members have questions, please don't hesitate to email myself um and then uh Erica Picket and I will will take a look at that and we'll get a response to
the full board with any questions. And that's all I have. [clears throat] >> Okay. Any questions for Dan? Seeing none in the room. And are there any online? All right. No questions online. Thank you for that. We are on to item four, the consent agenda. Right. Um I move approval of the consent agenda is presented. >> Second. >> Moved by Sor, seconded by Dr. Milan Bartlett. Is there any discussion? Seeing no. Oh, sorry. I mean, not to like get real detailed. I know we had a resignation at the end of last >> uh month. Just are we're I didn't see a new contract. We still >> We have it. We have it filled. The principal was able to shift around um some coverage. So we h have both classrooms covered fully now. >> Okay. All
right. >> Any other questions? All right. The consent agenda has been moved and seconded. All in favor? >> I. >> Any opposed? Any abstensions? >> All right. Consent agenda is approved. We are on to item five. So item five, again something that happens every January statutoily. Um districts need to set open enrollment seats. Um this has to be done in January. We are bringing it forward um as part of our two-step process. However, if the board after um reviewing the information would like to move it forward to um discussion action, we would need a separate motion to move that. Otherwise, this will come back at the next board meeting. um as an action item. We are after looking at um our enrollments, you can see um from the information provided and the um table we
have um sections based on um our class size targets which are in policy and um for regular education. You can also take a look at our special education and our motion language um shows where our spaces are available. We're looking at unlimited spaces for regular education seats and just a couple of um spaces available in a couple of our grade levels um for special education. >> All right, >> open up for questions. >> Any questions, Sharon? When we calculate how many spots are available, is that based like on desks and space or is it like how many classes we have and what we've capped our enrollments at for each grade or something else? >> Thank you, Erica, for coming on up. And you anticipated my uh boner friend option. So, at the elementary level, we
basically look at how many um sections we have. And the upper level are our class size target. When we get to middle and high school, it's a little trickier. We we tend to use like English language arts classes because every kid takes that. And we have um a requirement of four years of English credits at the high school. So, we use that as our guideline in terms of how many staff we have and what the maximum number of students we would have in those sections. >> Okay. Um, and as you can see, in theory, sixth grade, we don't have space, but we have chosen to not limit our open enrollment seats for regular education simply because we've been declining in enrollment so long. And like Dan said, we we have to do this in January.
So, we haven't even gone through the process to look at, you know, where we might shift staff members around for next year. So, the reality is that, you know, some of that will happen, too. And if we ended up with a family of three kids and one of them happened to be in sixth grade, there's there's just no reason to not allow them to open enroll into our district. All right. Any other questions? Seeing no other hands in the room or online, uh is anybody interested in making a motion on this or do we want to bring it back >> next meeting? >> Is there a a need? It just has to be done in January. It can't be done any other time other than this month. >> Okay. >> Um >> I think we
should wait till the next meeting. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Because we have another meeting coming and if there's not a pressing need. >> Okay. >> All right. So, we'll bring that back then next meeting. [clears throat] Uh there's nothing for discussion action. So, that takes us to meeting closing. Uh for action items, I have that Dan is going to look into 4K sites and um which of our 4K sites accept Wisconsin chairs. >> We'll look into Y. >> Okay. Well, we already found out that we can't buy tickets to the winter dance. Are there any action items that I'm forgetting? >> Well, you're going to say about our community conversation. You'll see that. >> Yes. Okay. So, no other action items. Future meetings. We have a workg group meeting. uh outreach work group is
meeting tomorrow virtually at 5 and then we have our next uh board meeting on the 19th at 6:30. But this Saturday upcoming, we have our community conversation with families at Riverbluff at 9:00 am. And then legislative day is at the Oh, wait. First, we have another board meeting on the 2nd at 6:30. And then legislative day is at the high school on February 3rd. And if there is nothing else anyone has, I would entertain a motion for adjournment. >> I have a couple of questions actually. Dan, when we were looking at the audit slide, did you say something about someone had had a question that you were gonna share with us? >> Yes. >> Did you already do that? >> Not that chat. I'll do it tonight after the board meeting. >> Okay. >> Yeah.
>> And then on Saturday, where in Riverluff are we going to be? >> Cafeterium. >> Okay. At we be there at 9:00 or do we need to be there a little earlier? We'll start at 9. >> Okay. >> So, if you're there a little bit early, you're you'll be good. >> Okay. >> And this coming Saturday is for middle school families. >> Middle school parents. Yes. >> And we're going to we're still working on rescheduling the elementary. >> We have invited the elementary families who accepted and so we will have a table for the elementary families who were there. Gotcha. Thank you. >> Yep. >> Okay. Any other questions? All right. Now, if somebody would like to make a motion for adjournment move to adjurnn. >> I second. Moved by Sorg and seconded by Pew.
Any discussion? >> All right. All in favor? I. >> Any opposed? Any abstensions? Meeting is adjourned.
