hi everybody um I'd like to call this meeting to order and establish form starting a full call uh John here Jen here Corby here Joe here I'm here as well we officially have a forum um sure has this meeting probably noticed it has all right and Courtney could you read our equity and uh results statements sure each student has access to the resources and educational rigor they need at the right moment of their education regardless of race gender gender identity ethnicity ability language sexual orientation religion family background or family income in our mission statement readings each student will acquire the Knowledge and Skills necessary to achieve their personal goals thrive in a diverse Global society and lead a healthy self-fulfilling life thank you does everyone have a chance to take a look at the agenda
for tonight and if it looks okay is there a motion to approve the agenda some moved motion agenda a second second from John all in favor of adopting the agenda as presented meaning this agenda has been adopted so with that we can go right into the superintendent report thank you everybody uh good evening and we're happy to be here today uh for our meeting we want to begin with a couple of celebrations for the superintendent update uh first uh influencer district and the Board of Education I want to appropriately recognize and celebrate women's history uh women's History Month we are very proud of all the accomplishments of women through throughout history and want to continue to elevate voice and especially in areas where the voice is not really produced to help me to invest so
we'll continue to celebrate promote women's history of month and as I say in situations where we're celebrating uh gender race or rather for the demographic it goes beyond the month but it's always good to have a good recognition uh next you know I'm very proud that every day is a great day to be a wildcat but I also wanted to just lift up a phenomenal uh count Thursday three to three day weekend where we had our student athletes rise to the top again and no one to recognize our girls hockey Co-op and for their State uh State finalists uh our boys hockey from the state runner-up and gymnastics we were our state champions when you think about that one weekend that's again a great weekend to be a grown area wild thing and so we're
proud of our community our coaches and especially our student athletes and continue to lift up excellence and I will give you a whole winner report as we get a new one as we wrap up the winner she is well I wanted to recognize our athletes for this weekend our teacher retirement um and then and when you think about education retirement we're so glad for uh the next step in our Educators let's begin to venture out and they always know our doors are open and we figure out a way to bring it back in you know in multiple ways but I want to recognize Amy bus uh Larry gunlock Carrie Hansen Rebecca Olivia and grevia Gregory Peppers Gregory Pence for uh you know you look at the accumulation of years or you have over 120 years
of service to uh to education and we're so thankful for for this really stamp uh this was this is our teacher retirement celebration recognition we will also do support staff and administration stuff but right now this is actually our just our teacher celebration it's always hard to see names encounters with these amazing teachers I know Mr Pence was a big influence in my son's life Bittersweet that we understand the best most of the folks on this list have had a direct hand in supporting mentoring beginning staff colleagues and just their impact goes well beyond the hundreds and hundreds of students clearly that just their impact on so thank you um to celebrate their successes throughout the rest of the year and they'll meet up next year as well so our brothers and our teachers next
we're going to move into uh one of two products uh uh that we have on the board we want first of the communication knowledge and we also have a curriculum product that is going to take a place so uh here to discuss the communication audit will be our public information officer is Marcy Piper assortment Marshall thank you yeah I don't know everybody so I think Dr cardi and I are both excited and happy that works are at this point in our Communications work in the district we have undertaken a Communications audit to really inform us moving towards to the next level in our Communications in both power communicating the content what it looks like what modalities we're using and it's pretty simple if we want to know what people want we're asking them so as
we talk tonight you'll see there's a number of different ways we're getting input from folks a wide variety of people so that we can have their wants and needs and sort of our faces we're moving to that next level and as always our work is grounded in board governance policies this is work is grounded in ob9 it's part of our efforts to ensure what you see in OE 9 and we love communication appropriate input strategic 2A communication and keeping the public adequately informed and hopefully above and beyond adequately informed so the key components of our Communications audit are that we do have a staff work group that's about 14 people from all grade levels different positions throughout the district they are heavy users of various communication venues they're in positions such as a site secretary
at a school who if you've ever you know walked into an office at a school they are communicating non-stop with teachers families kids each and every day so they're a great source for information we launched a short survey last week we sent that to the board as well as all of our staff our families and students in grades 8 through 12. so we'll be working with our schools to hopefully give students a few minutes in their advisory period to complete that survey and encouraging staff to complete the survey and then we're doing phone interviews with our board group we may get a couple of additional folks to that and then we are in the process of relaunching our website so we're getting great input on our website what's working what's not working what people need
what they would like to see and then also giving us information out and getting feedback from our students staff and parent advisories we have met with the student advisory and they're also very polite that they did not have devices out in front of them so I had to let them know it's okay to take your device out it's not an often away situation this is a on and working on your device whether that was a phone or an iPad and it was great that they were working on looking at different websites on their phones that's something that's really important so many people are on their phones when they're looking at our website and when you're on other side designing you're really doing that on a phone so it's great to have them use a bad
medium to give their input that I mentioned our website relaunched the current agenda that we use was actually purchased by another company so it was sort of great timing for us to move over into a different type of design we have been having folks take a look at different websites that are created by the company that we'll be using so they they are looking at products that are available to us to provide feedback on those and then as we look ahead what we're going to do with all this information once we've complete the audit is to write a communication plan and launch that communication plan again it's pretty simple it's pretty straightforward what do people want to be hearing when how how often and how can we move forward with doing that in a nutshell
that is a Communications audit and what it's all about um Dr Clarity what did I miss what did I miss um there's nothing that was that was missed I think the what's important to lift out is the intentionality of this is our work stream and not a special occasion [Music] not a surprise but we also learned that things are done differently because they're different so it just again there's always an opportunity to learn from communication or harmful communicate so we even learn from that situation just make sure that everyone understands our shift in work streams why we do it uh I don't think everyone understood that when we presented OE Knight where Community understand what we presented that was a key next step and we'll make it more so let's just continue to communicate on
Prime but I just found it ironic that we were doing a communication audit at manufacturing communication back to us um from the from my local paper about pretty pretty big deal because it's worked so we should do but we get we get it and it's good to know that we're uh I want to thank RC as well uh uh kind of threw her into a referendum we redesigned uh he's on a website and all the communication ships that we've made into taking everything in stride and so my closing comment is just a true appreciation from the Brunner school edition our families you know we're not perfect yet there's an organization but we are continually get better in communication is a key region of why we're getting better some thinking right here 100 absolutely my pleasure
do we have a timeline yet on when a website relaunch would happen or is it too early even in the process our plan is to relaunch it with the beginning of the school year so we'll be working on it you know we've started some work we'll be working on it through the course of this school year typically we like to if there's things to train our staff on we would like to training some of our staff who are here during the summer months before they head out the door but the intention is that when we launch the 2324 school year new website will be a part of that great um for the website are we considering like easily updatable templates and things I know that everyone likes fancy beautiful websites but having managed with you
and they'll ease of updating and ability to keep the content refresh is super important yeah really good question the template that we are looking at when we started on the road of let's just look at websites that we like better buy this company um the super showed ones are as you can imagine custom right which custom means you need a lot more capacity so although they're they're sharp and catchy we've said we've thought let's look at the templates that you can update they're a little more simple they're not quite as as um flashy or catchy but that's the idea right a little easier to update a little easier to manage next time around we'll do a question yeah I appreciate that and I think some of the beautiful photography and content that you put together
in a teamhouse can make it look like she's awesome thank you and then just in the broad scope having looked at the survey I mean there's a lot of questions about how do you access information from the district what are your preferences Etc so um just we'll be curious just kind of see what the results of the survey are and what direction that is just because it was such a nice broad sweeping way of really trying to find out how people prefer to hear from us right and questions about social media are no longer social media right you took apart Facebook yeah Twitter or different things like that so yeah that is one of the groups that we want to hear from um but one of the reasons we put the QR code for that
survey and other surveys on our website on our Facebook still relies on somebody having a Facebook account and scanning a QR code um so you know that's something we think about um you know another reason that we go out to the chamber and what is the chamber networking launch this week but I'll talk about the fact that this survey is out there share the QR code because we do want to reach those people there's a lot of them right they live in the district they don't have kids in the district um you never did or maybe they're a grandparents so we do take efforts make efforts for that it'd be great if there are other ideas and groups we could reach out to to reach that audience we'd certainly be happy to hear that thank
you any other questions for Mercer thank you all right so uh Mercy's transition now we're going to transition to uh our curriculum on it and that'll be led by Dr Hawkins she's brought to a bunch of guys today temperature please buy one more chair thank you you're welcome team we're so excited to have you here today to present to the board on our curriculum audits your trip you got cars to introduce your team and we'll be presented in your topic good afternoon good evening um glad to be here have an amazing team with me today I'll allow them to introduce themselves however tonight as we foreshadowed last week or at our last board meeting when we were talking about results policy and we were building capacity around science Karen the stats Glover mentioned the work
that we've been doing with my staff on doing the whole autopsy of our group so we're going to share those results and what we found our clienties and our next steps period foreign and I'm the curriculum learning specialist specialist at Sugar Creek I think this week's Up in Vegas and I'm the secondary World technical programs coordinator and as Karen is getting started we were listed and we didn't also point out those that are in the audience our CLS rewarded some and we need to have the number one librarians who also ran the best that doesn't also have our other director of any people can do his secondary director and all of these folks have some way some piece of information that will be presented by this curriculum all right so we'll get started so we
wanted to take you back to a couple of slides that you've seen before first to call out the vision of coherence that we've been working on here in the Brewing Area School District making tremendous progress with a strategic framework getting really excited about the skills and values that you've identified and recognizing that developing from those two outcomes a framework for teaching learning is an important work that we've been leaning into as we started through 24 school year specifically to the Department of teaching learning and Innovation we knew that in order to get to a teaching and learning framework we had to get a deeper understanding of the current state the curriculum consequently we have engagement and curriculum audit that we're going to speak to this evening and that in turn was necessary for us to
be able to move toward a curriculum adoption and implementation design as I believe you all know we have two teams of Educators attending the unbounded standards Institute and in attending the under standards Institute that is allowing us to frame our strategy specifically for curriculum's option and implementation which we will be designing completely in June with both of those students after both teams are ahead I want us to also reground you and some information that you may have seen before which was specific to the feedback sessions that occurred with me with principals with instructional leaders across the district when I first stepped into the role of director of teaching and learning specifically to identify from our leaders what they saw as areas of serious opportunity areas of growth for us moving into a model and a
strategy or a set of strategies for teaching and as you can see as you look at those bulleted items you can see call it out specifically the need for that standards alignment which the curriculum audit also supports any of your amount a little bit more tonight and also wanting specifically to shift the burden from teachers having to create the resources for teaching and learning and finding the process and the way of ensuring their teachers have the resources and our overarching goals again are listed for you there which I know you have had and you'll continue to have the opportunity to take a look at but I wanted to point out the third one specifically which is about stabilizing the innovative instructional core and again conducting the curriculum audit was a way of understanding where do
we need to do that stabilization and how might we move forward with innovation future adoption homes so I'm going to hand it over to Annelise and we'll pass it down to walk you through the information about the curriculum specifically so I had the pleasure of working on the curriculum audit along with my team members and other coaches and multilingual directors in the in the um district and our question was what is the state what is the current state of of our industry we developed a form for teams of teachers to work on and keep the teachers back down and looked at heard States and filled out the form and we collected information about what our units have studied what are essential questions what kinds of resources curricular resources are teams and teachers using what kinds
of supports are there for English Learners and students with IEPs um and we collected all of this in big giant spreadsheets and then we got to go through and look and see what is the current date um we really had a wonderful participation in this process it was really efficient and that was quite satisfying personally but more importantly we think we got really good from every team of teachers at every school we um look at the data by great bands and um as a group we broke into groups basically and synthesized it and my team partners are going to tell you what they noticed in different subjects with them so math Ela social studies great so I'm going to share about our arcs from the curriculum audit um you'll notice the slides are organized by
coherence so the things that were kind of synthesized to be similar across the grade bands and then some considerations and when we were making these slides we decided to keep it at the K-12 level rather than separating it out because vertical alignment is something that we're really looking for across the K-12 level no matter the subject um so in ela we found um some points of coherence where a universal curriculum that is the units of study um in the neighborhood monolingual classrooms minor level schools and classrooms um we were also found some really good alignment to the Common Core State Standards which that is what we teach right so we were we were happy to see that the curriculum that we have is aligned to the Common Core with the balance of kind of all
of the different um strands of the Common Core represented as well as really diverse and inclusive there's some some areas of coherence and for consideration I think the biggest thing that we were looking at is really trying to align um the resources for both our tweet classrooms and our monolingual classrooms to gain more culture um where as we move forward in the alignment that's kind of going to be a priority um looking at is are the resources that we have aligned to the standards and do we have vertical as I mentioned um the other thing that is a big consideration for us is inconsistent implementation and a kind of variety of resources in the foundational skills area that's phonics instruction which we know is crucial to our students learning um so that's going to be
a big area um consideration for us and then I'm also going to speak to math so in math um we found a lot of coherence which is awesome there was Universal Elementary curriculum at the K-5 level we use Bridges um and at the secondary level they use an illustrative map in the neighborhood schools including tweet so where we found that lack of alignment with tree and the pla we do have um coherence um there in math and again really rigorous and aligned to the great level stand those curriculums are very well aligned as resources um and then some areas for consideration uh these uh this these curriculums were adapted during the pandemic um so we felt like a big area of consideration was just continuing to have ongoing professional development to really help support our
teachers with implementation of this Universal curriculum um and then another one to highlight is just opportunities for co-planning with all different types of teachers that might support the classroom teacher um just to really help support our students the best that we can so that was Ela and math I'm going to share about science and social studies so for science we found coherence in the sunset of k5's neighborhood tools to have common curriculum so they do use Mystery Science um and our k5t student health classrooms do have common curriculum within the Tweet program because they do use um some Spanish language arts and content standards to build their units and that's the same K5 one of the considerations that we did notice though is that while we do have a common curriculum K5 for Mystery Science
it's inconsistent with how teachers are using the aligned assessments and so we're not there yet with that and as well as recognizing the science is an important content to lean interdisciplinary literacy 75 minutes per week it's kind of tough to tough to make that happen in social studies for coherence do you have common summative assessments aligned to the content standards for between K5 as well um six to eight courses are aligned to power standards and substandards and then in 912 the power centers have been identified so they are working towards that standards focus in considerations we did know that K-8 does not have a universal social studies curriculum and that academic supports are teacher dependent so it just depends on the teacher what's important to read available for students foreign adoption implementation model as I
indicated before that begins in June after all of our teams have been able to attend the standards Institute because that will be informative in how we design that model we are we are suggesting that we need to prioritize the K-12 social studies curriculum specifically for next year because we do not have um the universal curriculum okay for social studies and we do have teachers who are dependent upon what they can access online or through other resources to I'm also looking at how do we in this process of curriculum adoption and specifically the implementation design model how do we ensure that we have a universal knowledge of pocs so that teachers have that opportunity to come together throughout the implementation process using assessing data to help design instruction and identifying those opportunities for professional learning support
with existing standards on my curriculum so recognizing that we've just talked about core instruction we have talked about all of the content areas that we teach across our wonderful school district and we are identifying one area of learning for a course adoption process and we still know that with other places where we need to lean into support versus existing standards align curriculum and specifically we have identified the foundational skills gave two literacy foundational skillsis being one of those primary areas as well where we can lean in and provide support some support well thank you what questions must you all have for us has like four questions maybe I'll just pick one of us to start um so in a couple of the slides um you talked about like in English language arts and math um
the lack of alignment to Universal curriculum in the charter schools um can you talk a little bit about like sometimes lack of alignment is good and sometimes lack of alignment is bad can you talk a little bit to that like what does that look like and how are we making sure that in areas where the alignment is above and beyond that we're replicating that um and not kind of um having kind of similarities or bringing everyone down to the same but instead I forget the words that we used last time but like alignment instead of consistency or kind of copy carbon copies um with our neighborhood schools in offshore River Charter Schools we want to make sure first and foremost that everyone's wanting to the standards sure so that making sure that whatever curriculum that
is adopted in the implementation process whether it's whether it's equipment specifically selected by our charter schools and our government Council and we have that alignment to the scene also thinking about vertical alignments so if I think about important how much for example and students be having the opportunity to begin in kindergarten and continue all the way through the eighth grade we wanted to ensure that you have that vertical alignment across the curriculum resources at the impact as well so that's the alignment piece mostly that we want to be sure is present and whatever the robust model of mathematics instruction is for example in K8 with an assessment model we want to ensure that the core knowledge students have the the similar experience with a robust assessment um I also just had I've noticed this room
I have to educate so you called out the teaching of phonics at one time I thought it said we use the Lucy Hawkins method so is this our attempt to incorporate more phonics into our reading I love that Edna it is it is we do use so inclusive study is our Universal curriculum for K5 literacy in our neighborhood schools and while it does have some here to study associated with foundational skills embedded within that curriculum it is not enough for what our students need and it's not aligned to what we're learning about the science of reading and for very specific types of instructions so we have a group of leaders um of our literacy leaders in the description for the working through a process with with understanding more about the science of reading so that
we can go forward and as I was saying make immediate recommendations for some of the shifts that we can make to to provide for that instruction to classrooms and in the short term just to add to that so during the pandemic we realized that we had students who put some of those foundational skills that were taught K2 they were at home doing the best that they could well you have supplemented in our buildings with another program called Sunday so we're we you're being very intentional to make sure that those students that made up missed out on those foundational skills are they are getting that instructions and getting back getting those skills um I have another one but I don't want to keep anyone else okay um [Music] when you said 75 minutes per week that
we're limited to science does that count any like cross-discipline instruction or just pure Sciences thank you English language Learners and you said this was across all teachers in all disciplines which is super exciting with the Dr Clarity I think this speaks to kind of the reorg of student services under the curriculum like it's it's all one um was there any consideration at all in terms of resources that were available for English language Learners or those with IEPs um across all of these disciplines were there any key findings to that that were of note to you all I think one of the things that we know is that with the reverse adoption process where we have very clear criteria that includes our interrogation of resources specifically in service of multilingual murders um and a curriculum curriculum
resources that allow for that scaffolding that differentiation core instructional instruction that we will be able to address the needs of all Learners in the classroom so we want to be sure that whatever curriculum we're adopting has the has the flexibility and the the ability to do that without our teachers having to manipulate and use a variety of resources so that's that's part of our commitment moving forward we also know that our tweet model um and the development of the Tweet was again align to standards we're just looking for how do we find the best Universal resources so that our students are having similar um thank you okay we'll go ahead just to continue response to uh the close question would be fair to say um that we are exploring reading and the intersectionality with the
supports that provides readings language Learners that's one of the areas that we were looking to increase through the through that strategy yes um I'm looking at math and it says limited access to supplementing materials to support student learning is that saying the students don't have access or is that saying the district doesn't have access to those supplementary materials yes it's a curriculum resources yes gosh okay so sorry first oh that's okay but first just letting me know that on results policy math night I didn't speak so but now I am gonna just bring something up from my math frame and I would also be remiss if I didn't say annalize the minute you were describing giant spreadsheets and analyzing was like and that is the right person so just like to lift up your edit
talents um so along those same lines I know with um middle school and beginning high school with working with illustrative we've already done the adoption and the number of secondary newcomer students and with me moving to the high school level there are concerns there right there is not Spanish versions of illustrative is that correct there are there are versions okay we don't have it in geometry they're recognized and they also recognize the value of the film right so we're just going to say we are if we do have those statement resources available now um you know that I will be Franken that we we need to again require educators with our biological resource teachers right through that model justices [Music] for sure I appreciate that up about the time to reinvest even though those illustrative
has been around for a few years it really hasn't gotten my Biola Council or education values but they believe that it is religious yeah thank you so a couple things I think we covered some of my questions already um but I just wonder if you could speak for a second to how much um at this point or in the future your are your processes leveraging some of the special education expertise that we have particularly around Notions of differentiated materials coming to the curriculum and you know a truly inclusive curriculum that include you know everybody on an IEP no matter where they are so yeah that's my first question I think what you're asking John is what has to do the orientation model they gave into the process they need to have teams of Educators to
support students with a variety of expertise making those decisions about but how we support students with learning through information also again that would be our special education teachers I've worked in the world Runner Educators Etc and then another question I had was around the 75 minutes and I think more generally with the prioritizing the social studies curriculum um I think the need to look at minutes kind of forces us into this unfortunate situation where like all of the content areas are unnecessarily siled um and so I'm wondering about how much we're looking for as part of this process materials that allow us to work uh cross content areas that lend themselves towards more like project-based learning or things like that so that those 75 minutes can be covered um while we're reinforcing literacy learning or
math learning or something like that yeah appreciate that question too but the primary goal ISM with that recognizing that there is some specificity of what does it mean to think like a scientists and a socialist organ have resources that allow teachers to support students to do that and looking for that intersection of these instructions to them all right so we want to thank uh I think I've worked for some great great question and some insight always so excited when we have our experts in our spaces to to provide context and understanding them to work what you do on a daily basis we want to make sure to uplift that initial our appreciation for everything you're doing do you do with your Marine cloud of nature to how that is how we look at curriculum but
you know the rollout the implementation and the utilized utilization of establishments processes so as part of this process also considering I'd imagine with coming out of the pandemic a lot of these companies have produced curriculum are working towards adapting their materials in such a way that they're easily transferable to uh online particularly like asynchronous setting so that the same rigor that happens in the classroom is easily translatable into online learning is that something that's part of the adoption process that you guys are looking at yeah so one of the organizations that um and working with the resources available for us to end reports they r b looking at what are the resources within a curriculum system that allow for that asynchronous learning and that would be great okay sorry to keep you that's awesome thank
you thank you team foreign it's all downhill from here all right so before we go into oe3 and John you threw me a softball field I don't have to be able to talk about this I really appreciate that um you know one of a couple of things that we have brought to the table um with this internship team is making sure that we leave with integrity and legal integrity means to name when things are going great as you saw my presentations and also name when we've missed it when we missed the market RV documents of Arkansas and one of the things I want to uplift is a a deeper look at our messaging for asynchronous instruction especially for the late February uh snow day and I just have to enable it now because you feel
like we've been in a polar apocalypse don't know how to get us out of that um but I want to front load this conversation by making sure um if I say three times until I'm talking about myself and my leadership because our staff the owners to Mr staff are phenomenal and they're amazing they do everything we ask them to do so right now I was talking about me and my leadership as a quick tenant and so it's my responsibility as a leader to look and really dive into the messaging of what we put out to our our families and also check the product to make sure that there's a match there when we were looking at specifically asynchronous instruction um this is where I I wondered about our ability to uh go deeper in our
understanding around what we were constituting as HSN age Secrets instruction for instructional amendments uh and having some deeper dialogue around that because when we talked about it we talked about it from a K-12 perspective in our communication where we send out products that had two different goals actually goals that were the soccer sign to them just for transparency we at the elementary level we have enough facility minutes we're not in a situation where we are behind instructional events where we are uh struggling with minutes based off the number of school closures is at the same so when we're when we're looking at asynchronous let me be clear as much as as good as we strive to be and we'll get better each time there's nothing that's ever going to replace me in front of a
talented Staffing that's just never gonna happen because you can't that ability to Pivot to understand what the immediate needs of a student in that moment will be right there one-on-one as an expert JC skill that you just can't duplicate um and so while that's what we strive to get close to I I'm not going to like Willow whatever we do have a I feel like a responsibility to continue to make sure that when we say rigor that rigor is what we are putting in front of our in front of our students and messaging prepare the product I can't say that confidently that we that we get our Market was we internally reviewed that that's not on the message the message the message that was written was exactly the way I wanted so I definitely don't
want to look at anyone else in this organization except for myself because it's my responsibility to look at what are we communicating what's the product and then be able to say yeah yes or no so this is only about three and my leadership and so that is why I wanted to just say I I don't think that we hit that level this uh this this time and just name it own it and just talk about how we need to continue to get better as an organization as we continue to get better at Ms infrastructure and I I I have an amazing team around me that will help us get stronger there but there's no way I'm just going to leave that out here and not just name it when we didn't hit our homework of
Excellence three questions we appreciate your your candidness in naming it again things don't improve unless they're at least recognized first so um taking attention and thank you Donna for the Segway and you know I was on full answer Chris from that conversation all right uh next we're going to bring another team up uh for you uh oe3 which is the treatment of pH stakeholders so we are going to bring Marcy get some food because she's setting up anime good Jason Rubio our director of technology and Michelle hey there Executive Director of Human Resources so martial just front loaded in the terminal team okay sounds good all right so when we look at OE three um and hope you had a chance to take a look at the executive summary and the video that were attached
to because I think they brought some insight into the um the goal that we were trying to that we were trying to achieve and talk about the treatment of community stakeholders you will hear a little cross over here in between 03 and 09 but I think there's also they did Integrity piece of how we treat Community stakeholders in the department that doesn't always resonate in only so I think this is more specific to that and our stuff our ability to self to Monitor and assess how how we're doing that we're also on operation side we're going to be in our first situation of progress monitor report where we have uh five indicators with three of them are are evidence-based and two of them are still in capacity building both and so when you look at
our final outcome of how potentially an accepted compliance with exceptions or the exceptions are that two of these areas are still capacity building areas we articulated in and so we wouldn't be able to particularly enough to score five out of 500 indicators until 20 thank you so are there any questions about how that's how our situated today what we're going to work through some evidence indicators and some capacity building on the same on the same module yeah all right thank you for that in terms of oe3 the superintendent shall maintain an organizational culture that treats parents and members of the community with respect dignity and courtesy and the interpretation of that is that the BAC Board of Education values ethical leadership that prioritize as professional and personal behavior that is responsive and accommodating to stakeholders
while upholding the beliefs and mission of the ASD or expect the superintendent to build and maintain positive relationships with the community in order to generate community support and Trust in our schools the interpretations and indicators that flow from what we free will be the focus of our presentation tonight and as opportunity said Jason and Michelle will chime in the greatest nights throughout the evening talk about their departments in particular and the role that they were plays in this and the first thing that we'll focus on is the superintendent will protect confidential information and that is interpreted as that confidential information of the district including student and staff records and individual education plans will all be protected and the indicator is that there's no unauthorized release of confidential information in the district as evidenced by the
lack of complaints resulting from such release and we'll look at technology and human resources and also about services and the information that they have gathered regarding that this receives a green check mark for being in compliance so Jason is here to talk with us a little bit about the technology aspect of it thank you so when it comes to the confidential information obviously one of the big things I wanted to really push with my starter is the director of Technology was making sure that we were Superior on the back end and part of that is obviously securing data specifically mostly our student data and one thing that we've done for that continued on uh was obviously with our anything that involves us signing in to where any data might be collected in any way whether
it's metadata or something along the lineup you know like username and password we make companies sign what's called a data privacy agreement so basically going through to make sure that one we know exactly what is collected we're okay with what they are collecting and we have very strict guidelines If You Don't Stray away from uh you follow Wisconsin's data specific data privacy agreement so we really hold ourselves up to a high step and when it comes to that um and it's audited every three years so I have a form and just a little snippet up there to where I have all of them with their expiration dates so I know when I can go re-contact the company make sure that all of the ingredients are still intact they sign off on it and then I
sign off and then we'll get threaten every three years A lot of it does go into if there is some type of breach of data with notification of when it happens within a certain time frame and then obviously us also knowing you know what data is there but even goes as far as you know with the app what things might be available for our students to see such as it's kind of a big red flag to me I see ads in something that's usually shut down by the way to where we're just not allowing them um so obviously it's a lot more than you probably wanted to hear about the data stuff but I thought it was important to talk the other thing when it comes to a lot of our staff data um is
when it comes to our Google accounts all of those are secure if we have someone that leaves the district we are able to transfer ownership uh to whoever has to take in that position and what we also do is we do not delete accounts instead we make them inactive and that allows us to still go back and recover any information that is there and make sure that it's protected and then also with our file and folder permission set up uh you'll probably notice whenever you you know make a new Google doc it's automatically set to restricted and that you have to go in and share it and that's just something that we do just as a precautionary thing and it was set up before I was here it's something that we're going to continue and
lastly um when it comes to the protection of our data obviously you hear it all the time on the news collected from cyber attacks um and so one thing that I wanted to really push this year was making sure that we had our cyber security incident response plan all set to go so we have that plan basically it's a if this happens we do this we have our team together um based on different severity levels whether it's as simple as a kid-founded vulnerability on a LMS with a you know engine being a little annoyance all the way to a level three which is everyone here is probably going to be contacted for it so um this also allows us though to document any incidents as I said whether it's small or large so it isn't
always if data is compromised um we haven't had any yet that involve that um but it is something that we are tracking as well and we have in both digital and paper copies members of those anyone have any questions um I just have two quick ones do we have a last day of work like takes us to where when somebody leaves we can't filter through all the applications they have access to automatically go through and remove if it's not a single sign language so you mean with their drive or do you mean just with like any website to it like any websites that they might have access to so on behalf of the school with like a Google audit we do not um we are notified by DPI if there are any um things that
pop up that have been flagged as expected has been compromised and they'll let us know if there was any email accounts associated with those um I will say all the ones that we've had with those have been of former employees um and have been from a few years ago um we haven't had any demo reasons as of this year or world class so when we give teachers access to things that are like applications and aren't on Google Drive Duty try and encourage single sign-ons so that when we deactivate their Google account it deactivates them in all those devices as well yeah so we try and encourage I mean Google signage a variety of reasons but um another big thing is uh and I think that I try to implement and this is kind of my
big summer project was going through all of our apps that we have in our app store we had over 500 apps and I cut it down to about 250 and that was just based on either dpa's different signs ads that I saw on them obviously there's always you know technology you know there's a world there's a way there's a way that people will go around and unless you go and block everything down um you know it's kind of impossible to completely stop but um especially with a single sign-on it makes it easier for us because then if there is an incident like epi one of the websites that was compromised in 2017 uh was a uh I'm assuming they use it for some type of Realty assignment um and so it was a website that
was not one that was even an educational one so we we see that sometimes to where you know sometimes it's just easier to click the Google sign-on um and like I said unless we go and block everything and just have a smaller allowance it's hard to stop everyone but at least then we're notified of any but can you just share um so when someone resides from the school district their termination data is put inside organism might be biopief that goes to the IT department and then what do you do with that to shut down some of the big resources so anything google-wise so that you know if we get the email from Skyward and that's not this person um this is where we put it inactive mode like I said we don't delete any accounts
um but that would stop them from signing in with those approval account onto anything um it think of it kind of like a uh you know resetting the password but we have the password I remember reading about some high-profile School District ransomware attacks even locally in Wisconsin over the last couple years do we know anything about those incidents and have there been any kind of lessons that we've taken from that in terms of what we do for our data security uh definitely uh the one big one uh in Wisconsin we had a bigger one in Illinois and the nice thing is a lot of those District leaders are now actually out being in professional developments so my network and manager Dan Wong I'm Dean is actually the school year I was able to attend a
cyber security conference where one of the directors of one of the school districts actually presented in kind of a these are some things that I would recommend to him one of those big changes that along with some of the other things we're seeing within this type of security mode to kind of combat some of these that's actually why we Institute our password and character change which I know going from 80 to 16 characters sounds like you know I'm just making everyone say you know miserable because it takes so much longer to get done but when you have you no longer have people going out and trying to crack passwords you have programs that people created that are doing it at South and just going from 8 to 16 characters uh you know ads what could
be minutes for one of those programs to thousands of years so trying to take some of those things and make those changes and continue to make those changes we're currently in the process of updating our Mac and infrastructure adding more security with our servers um just to Beef It Up more than we've ever had you know it's kind of a you know you want to be in a situation where you didn't prepare for and something happened but and this might be out of scope but do we have cyber insurance that protects us against losses and that's something we're done as I'm sitting here I'm just listening and wondering um do we feel the need as a district to have a soft to have a baker until we step it that's yeah type of report because
of the sensitive data that that can be had or possibly yeah so we're actually we're in the process right now um talking about having so it's just called a hygiene test basically going through best way to describe it it's kind of like a when you buy at home and you have an inspection right except this is just inspecting the outside of the house we're not going to tell you what might be wrong on the inside but we'll let you know hey there's a hole there on the roof at the beads of some water damage inside but from there we are setting up so that you can have a uh ransomware check along with the full penetration and vulnerability tested as well with the district um once again it nothing is you know Port Knox but
the the more we can view the more we can prepare um like I said finding a little hole in your roof might lead to a little water damage but it's a lot and now you have black list so if it's one of those things we want to just try any vulnerabilities that we have to stop any way we can think of that they can do [Music] which that was like a bunch of people sitting down all day and answering a bunch of questions getting a bunch of numbers and uh and then yeah running the test so so I didn't have any questions but now after all this I'm like I have so many questions yeah just like we haven't been attacked but it's great yeah but it's you're constantly hearing the stories online it's just
things that you can you know you can just try and do the best to protect it all possible I know it sounds really I mean it's again it's what makes me question I mean how much data am I just sleeping out in the world just randomly right yeah yeah so this is this is great although I understood much of it so that's you know all the time yeah she needs to go to sleep talk I have one more quick question do we have any on-prem servers that is everything interested uh do we have any on-premises servers we're talking about server security invisible on-premise and those are the ones that we are currently upgrading along with some clouds great thank you for that I think the the fact that Jason and his team do such a
great job is why we have the luxury of knowing this much right because I log in and can I do my stuff right like you have the luxury of that and Jason's been a team of taking care of everything else yeah very blessed to have an amazing back-end team and then obviously my coaches here I'm very lucky so let me say the same again or say the email that the fact that I know this much and that's all I need to know about it I am very grateful for that that takes care of the technology piece of things I'm just going to jump back a few slides here so we can see um the other pieces of this focus on human resources and student services in the complete monitoring report there is some information on
human resources give us a very brief update because it's a very good update therefore it's short so we do try to follow our uh no complaints or notifications not only internally but externally as well can we partner with many companies our health insurance carriers are one and they have reported and the last piece of this one is our student services and just a direct technical update the language has changed from student services to special education it was formerly underlying for a lot of student services and similarly to Human Resources Dr halberg and her crew look through their information and they also have no complaints received release of this our information moving on to 0832 which reads the superintendent will effectively handle complaints there are two indicators under this this is a capacity building here for
having a complete handling system and as you saw in your complete monitoring report we took this apart into a couple of different pieces we looked at complaints that rise the level and sort of meet the conditions of being a very formal campaign the title High complaint and complaints around due process for individuals with disabilities and Education Act and we have had zero complaints before any of those at this point in time and then we have also developed a complaint tracker and that is for complaints that do not rise to the level of meeting the conditions of the Title IX or a due process complainant but that people are concerned about and they want to share with us that's also LinkedIn during report and the um we're also developing a caregiver concern or question communication flow
so that folks know I have a question or a concern about a b and c what do I do with that we want to be responsive we also want to be efficient so that the password teacher can answer a question email and Jason right so we have developed that it's been shared out with our district of leadership which includes our cabinet our central office leadership team and principals we're in the process of creating a public-facing messaging and infographic for folks so that they can easily see they have a question about something here that they should contact and then if something it's not resolved or addressed who they would contact next and after that it's all created we'll be launching it out with public to share the messaging and that is the progress that we have
made in terms of capacity building for having affordable complaining process are there any questions or did you want anything to joining mercy so they may be fair to look to the board we looked at which is a pretty Monumental task at the community to put the system the system in place our mindset was to go coming from the federal level state level and then local again to ensure that we weren't properly federal laws in our alliance our state law the guidelines so this is one of the rare carriages where you'll see us look at things from a federal level first make sure those systems are in place state laws are in place as well again like getting to do but also in clear alignment with our our other OE policies is to not never subject
the district to any legal legal action that could be that could be preventative so that's that's why we took this mindset promotional outside in that it's not to diminish the importance of making sure that our our local community has a place to drag the lead you know we just we had to prioritize how to get how the former way to work including system so I just want to put that out there for our why as well as how we how the approach approach this and then in terms of the evidence for indicator 2 indicator 2 reads that 70 of respondents that file the formal complaint will respond that the complaint was handled effectively and I think it was one of my first board meetings where the board was discussing this that somebody thinking that a
complaint was handled effectively doesn't mean they are happy with the outcome or that they agreed with the outcome uh so it's it's more of a how is the process managed than did I like the outcome question and we are in the process of developing a mechanism so that folks can have that opportunity to weigh in with that we want to hit that sweet spot of not having something over complicated but also having some kind of process so that the information that centralized and being contracted it's not you know a random one-off email Sapphire so we're working on developing that process or that mechanism and when that is in place we share that out to respond indicator 2 also serves as one of the areas that you could report back to the executive summary page in
Poland area where we would like to make a recommendation at the end of this progress monitor report to move uh this report on the calendar to July uh as it will always be a situation where we will have the data in the survey until then so we want to consider our sub situation where we're constantly saying we're about to order do that and then our third one is that the superintendent will intentionally create and maintain organizational commitment to individual differences and opinion and people in decisions that affect them open and honest communication at all levels predominant focus on achieving the board's results policies and open responsive and welcoming conditions throughout the district and in terms of our indicators and evidence provided indicator one is that the district provides multiple means for constituents to express their
individual thoughts and ideas to include getting feedback and clarity about their perception of the direction that the district is going this receives a green check mark within your monitoring report there's information about the Basu climate survey and so that all reaches as well as other opportunities that individuals have to participate in conversations provide input and feedback and then indicator 2 is that the district public committees are inclusive of the cultures of our diverse Community as demonstrated by documented committee lists and as evidence for compliance with indicator 2 we've provided rosters uh multiple communities including the superintendent's advisories the special education advisory Council the Strategic Frameworks caring committee the referendum committee and the gender inclusivity so I have a question on that first indicator and it might be a question for Dr Clarity but I'm wondering
if you could speak to the process of selecting who serves on those advisory committees so the oh student advisory comes through a company combination of staff recommendations and then a vetting process of those government agents so it also speaks to the indicator too where if I'm saying that the recommendations Mark represent representative or demographics deadline will ask for some obsessive or do some networking Improvement to have more students like so that also holds true for part of our family family advisory as well as our our staff advisory thank you can I ask one question okay so um I looked quickly at the list and I just wonder is there interpretation available for let's say like the parent or family advisories if their parents needs that we not had a parent who needed Spanish language that
would never prevent participation uh again I just want to reiterate with us you're moving or ask anymore yeah I mean just the awareness of course of being an apparent advisory you know put some some of our community may feel a barriers they don't know that that's available that's available to make sure we advertise it that way yeah is the conclusion of our information sharing regarding holy free and uh Gordon's welcome to ask us any questions we might have or discuss it further or when we check the last I have a question I forgot about from 3.1 the indicator that we have in 3.1 talks about any unauthorized release confidential information as evidenced by complaints um are we aware of any unauthorized releases of information of any confidential information to your respective complaints that we haven't
received complaints about you have an agent perspective no I figured that would be the answer [Music] yeah I think also we would if we got that information because you can that's that's a I think that's fine you just articulating because of you that we've got a okay so if there was a one-off present at least but the subject of the release didn't complain about it you would still for the presence of this report thank you [Music] any other questions hearing that is their emotion to accept this report thank you so um any questions from the board as we go through so I I have one of them is on when I was just asking about and I think Dr clarity's answer was really helpful for me to kind of clarify what my concern is and
I I did a bad job this time I didn't go back and look at the video of the discussion when we approved the indicators but as I was going through this report here it seems that depending on complaints as the evidence of whether or not there's been an unauthorized release there seems to be a discount there we should we ought to just prevent all unauthorized release of confirmation not just complaints and it seems like that's the district's position too considering they're interpreting complaint as just forget about whether or not there's a complaint is we don't want to do it period so I think that's a that's a problem with the indicator that we probably discussed a year ago and I just don't remember what it really said I would I would agree with your statement
I think what helped was hearing the description of the type of I.T rigor that we are putting our systems through I think you're right that it didn't we didn't do a great job of pushing for that to be so clearly articulated in the indicator um and that said I still feel confident with like having an external penetration test looking at hygiene like the fact that we were asking all these data questions and it'd be something it seems up to the level of like a corporate see so what they would be thinking about as well which I am very proud of and I think it kind of speaks to that but I think you're still right Joe that it could be called out more clearly not just complaint driven but like what are vulnerability tests showing
and things like that or how are we monitoring you know through no monitoring through no X Y and Z to BC so I just want to make sure that I'm understanding this because this is all foreign language to me um so what you're saying is that you're questioning the reasonableness of the indicator including the word complaint as opposed to something like notified or noticed or something yeah I mean my honest answer is in the in the indicator I would just take out this the Clause that starts as evidenced by lack of and then we're still where we are the description of compliance is still what it was today it just seems reactive instead of the proactivity that's clearly being done without knowing this discussion like all kinds of crazy I think so we're saying that
there might be a problem there but that's not our problem to solved right I think so okay I think that's right yeah and that for this for this sorry for this write-up it not only at least for me personally it not only feels like based on the indicator written this achieves it I think it actually goes kind of Above and Beyond in terms of some of them are good yeah and it's just to add on to that I'm extra satisfied with the response that Dr Clarity gave to my question which is they would interpret the way that that I would think that that indicator should be you know interpreted it's just a wording in it so if you're looking at this between the purposes reiterate that we're centering it up does this report are we
satisfied with the reporting from the superintendent for the board are we in agreement with that and then both of them are your complaints and we were just saying the word complain so much wants to deal with but I want to make sure that our conversation is focused on are we in agreement that the evidence um is showing what we wanted to show and I think what you said we've seen so much great information that it's it's really hitting the market s are there any areas that we as a board want to discuss further I have another one that I want to discuss it's not something that I even think is a problem but I think it would be beneficial for us to discuss and it's 3.3 indicator one and as I read that I I
interpret it as well we want there to be multiple modalities by which community members can give their feedback to the district and when I look at a lot of the opportunities that are listed a lot of those are are the reverse communication it's opportunities for the district to communicate to community members and granted at those sessions like all the referendum sessions all of the um in different Community Information sessions there are opportunities for people there to give feedback but that's not the purpose of the meeting it's kind of the other way around um so I'm not saying that I I think this is reasonable I agree that they're in compliance sure but I I guess to me what I'd like to see more of is is more modalities designed around getting feedback directly from the
pub which is again what we talked about the retreat that from a board level how do we solicit that feedback from the community to the district rather than the other way yeah the start of our meeting about a survey going on yeah so there may be things that are not necessarily enlisted that are still accomplishing that because I think that's the feedback loop is the president um we talked about that same question too I feel like in OE 9 which is so closely typed it it's one of like how do we make sure we're not measuring communication by us talking at the community but also the community talking back at us and conversing with us I think it's like a good it's a good thing to like keep top of Mind of like making sure
it's not so one-sided do we have any concerns about the evidence supplied for this indicator though Jody you said you did I don't I just thought it would be beneficial to kind of time it's a good thing too to point out I mean I think that's where we want to make sure hope it's the two-way the two ways absolutely but I agree I think that I think that there's other things that are going on to anything else can I speak now I just want to make sure that I'm asking this question now because it'll get lost later on are we saying that because Joey phrased this in terms of the a question about the indicator yeah and there's there's language about feedback in the indicator but it's not necessarily in the policy which is so
I'm wondering yeah maybe I could say that I I wasn't expressing a concern with the language of the indicator this time it was more whether what was being presented to us as evidence met what how I was reading the indicator which is to have opportunities for the community to send feedback this way and a lot of what was listed was opportunities for information to flow that way and I I'm totally fine with it being in compliance because there are Opera there are some opportunities in there you're definitely in the multiple but I think that it's important to kind of call out that the difference in soliciting feedback and giving information when it comes to community can I push down a little bit yeah so I I think on on the surface I I I very
just saying if uh if you just agree to the description here but actually in those settings we especially advisories and especially uh and also looked up uh like the GTA framework one we speak very soon so usually we open up an advisory with a probing topic and the rest of the hour is this way yeah um and so we we bring that into I think that I just want to take my perspective in the space because I think if label-wise unless we articulate that our facilitation style is to do very little probing and gather information along the way but we do structure those meetings that I do it might be hard to believe I don't have to talk to them and so I we really structure those meetings where it's one or two parochial slides
and then it's a lot of a lot of getting and asking verifying asking verifying questions when we went into the streaming framework uh one for example we I think it was probably a 50 50 splint where we purposely put space into those meetings where the whole second half of it was receiving information back from staff about you know the street program the same thing we've done for the um for the paragraph actually Marcy has done a good job of for the if the Jack gets really quiet aggressive so just throw some in there just to just to get the conversation going uh going again hey if you know if I were a Community member I might ask this and and then it kind of keeps it going because it's traditionally sometimes it's hard to get
that conversation going because there's so many of our so many people are used to I'm just going to sit and get and don't always have that question from them in their head so I yeah I just wanted to make sure that our facilitation style recognizes the importance of feedback but if I'm just leaving reading the title of the setting yes yeah those are thank you for saying those are excellent points I think one of the thoughts I was having about those focus groups or advisory groups in particular is the policy that indicator is speaking to the kind of community at large and those are like selected segments so if I'm like an individual Community member I don't have the opportunity to just show up at those settings and give my feedback although there is plenty
of that in here but for those in particular that's kind of why I was thinking of those a little bit separately one of the things that I think is interested is an indicator and I think if you report but the um the responsiveness that you have to emails that come in um there's a lot going on one defensive engagement that's going on um that's happening that um really can't capture very concisely in any report but um you know that's my anecdotal recognition um I know that I've heard that from numerous people about the responsiveness so I think that's something I'm not sure how you would qualify that and they would pick up weeks and weeks of your time to capture your calendar yeah we're doing our job there yeah well I have the same problem
that isn't isn't captured me the evidence that is is certainly evident and as we're thinking about the capacity building for the like a more structured complaint process than there might be in the future some data that you can actually present with evidence of that being one of the modalities by which for sure if I can add that is such a crucial part of what you your team has done just in terms of being or having Integrity around following up with people in a timely fashion that it might be worth finding a way to include some evidence of that because it is so foundational to what makes this successful um I mean I don't want to say like even if it's going to make you smell like roses but it's a good one to like look
down point I would also this is a question I've been thinking about for a while so I don't want to take away from this discussion am I and I'm just asking the rest of the board this am I recalling correctly or thinking about this correctly that one of the distinctions between oe9 and oe3 is that op9 is more about what you'll say about pushing information out there and only three what we're looking at here is more about receiving that feedback or creating at least the open environment for feedback to happen organically does that an appropriate interpretation I feel like I remember that being something that was delineated when we came up with it so none of the communication and yeah three is the culture yeah and like perception of I think I would just want
to say one more thing about this before I'm done and ready to go and this ties neatly to what we just talked about with the um asynchronous learning you know I think we've got so many examples in the world for our students here to see and look at of leadership being defined in terms of claiming the righteous ground that I'm always right and that's what makes me worthy of the authority of having authority over you so I'm like and that's really not healthy and so when I hear Dr Purdy talking about asynchronous learning here I think that's so powerful I'm not just in terms of keeping in line with this Le around you know building Trust with our constituents that our students and families and whatever but it's so important to set that example that
the leadership is about owning the processes that you're responsible for and um and that's how Integrity is built and that you know I mean there's no real way to capture that in this OE but I think that that discussion that we just had 30 seconds before we start this discussion is for me such a reaffirmation of why I find your leadership here so like exemplary for our students right my kids that go to the district here and being able to say like no this is this is how you do it you know this is how you own it I'll just plant your flag and say you're doing it right and somebody else's fault like that's pretty awesome so that for me was also evidence of this indicator have those but I think I think what
we are saying is again the what you do to satisfy this couldn't be continually report and we are very grateful for that and it doesn't go unrecognized so so thank you what we would do if it weren't you maybe then what we would have changed in our work there was one thing I wanted to know because having looked at this list and realizing all the different efforts including the referendum efforts and strategic framework and all of that I imagine in the future obviously there'll be a time when we're not in a referendum cycle so that won't be the evidence here but um if I was looking at that list and thinking of the referendum session that I attended where the interpreters were there and that um there's a large larger Spanish speaking contingent there and
so the multilingual um aspect of that was evident to me because I remember that referendum Community session I think it would be great if you noted in the evidence like which ones had a multilingual component because that's an important aspect of reaching out to our community and had I not attended that referendum session myself I wouldn't necessarily know that but I had that in my collection of it and how that was an important event for that community's you know opportunity to be drafted with Administration with leadership of this District so I guess in the future too obviously there wouldn't be referendum sessions if we're not in referendum cycle but if there's a way of noting um which events you know had that component thank you any other questions comments from the board I would recommend
that you have not done so to uh if you can and have the time to participate clarity's advisory uh councils because what's interesting is hearing uh the community what they have to say about the district and uh how they're conducted you spoke to it a minute ago about how you barely speak and that's very true there's a topic that's presented out there and then 90 of the time is the community speaking and uh you get a very different appreciation for the district and and our efforts and what Dr Clarity has done and continues to do when you hear a group of miles of parents in the community with the help of a sunset calendar um that's it that's all right with you yeah little sheets ladies every month is there's and I think we ever
wanted to do a great job with that is just making sure that everyone that's on the call understands that on our power is offensive you know we just I um I am not there for for hierarchy or for even I am a Community member with you listening to a a conversation and I mean just out of just natural respect for what we do and sometimes if we don't name it and frame it that way the conversation won't go that way so we just have to make sure that when the [Music] join the conversation okay so we have a motion from the goal we have a second from Jen um I think we're ready to vote so all in favor of accepting the report as presented signify with i i have any opposed to the foreign
okay so with that we're going to move into General board updates I know Courtney I think you had an update oh yes yeah good oh so uh a couple Fridays ago February 24th there was a Black History Month celebration here at the high school where uh the black sororities and fraternities were recognized uh were known as the Divine 99 and Dr Clarity was in attendance and uh what we did for the students was basically introduce our organizations and tell them what we're doing uh in the community uh how and when we were founded and what I loved about it is we had the students read that information so and we also did what's referred to as a Unity scroll where uh each one of our organizations perform what we do uh in unison with the
other fraternities and sororities and so many students had so many questions about the photography sensorities and how to become a member and I love that one of my brothers of Omega Sci-Fi fraternity Incorporated did mention uh took the microphone by himself and said you know the main thing we want you to take away from this is in order to become part of any one of these organizations you have to go to college you have to get by high school you have to get that high school diploma you'd have to strive for academic excellence in order to become a part of any of these organizations because we all have a certain academic criteria that allows you to even be considered to be a member and you could almost hear a pin drop when you said that
on the microphone because you can look out there and see the students were like oh okay this is what we have to do in order to become a member so um that was great we want to continue to do that annually uh based on the outcome and how the students received it and uh this Friday March 10th we're gonna have the African-American history challenge sponsored by the hundred black men of Madison uh here at the high school at 5 30. I'll be emceeing the event uh narrative will be one of the judges this time my son didn't ask him Badger Ridge and Savannah Oaks will be competing against each other and uh the Verona High School I'm trying to understand what happened we only have one team so we're gonna split that team into two
and have them use it as a practice Run for the uh District challenge the hand is in April this was a really cool relaxed yesterday yeah so if anyone said you would learn so much and it's really bad it's at 5 30. yeah and if we're in the high school it's a Pac yeah um I mean I felt like I learned a ton it was just cool to see our kids last year I'll never forget how the middle schoolers yeah they were amazing yeah but wow like the amount of learning that they're doing so it was really beautiful thanks for everything is there anything else in Europe when you're in you're either in state and I'm in high school or you're right yeah any other updates John did you have any cure on TV was
it in the audience on TV for hockey or maybe with my strange cat if it's possible um yeah I got to go to hockey games so that's good um my hockey team's amazing been amazing for many years continues to be amazing um you know we've got so many kids in the community that participate in hockey that it's really fun to see all these people come out um I have a port update on cc2 which is uh organization that I represent that's on um not much it's really the we just had an update about what sisa is um so again if people aren't familiar it's uh kind of public private entity that's empowered by the state in Wisconsin particularly DPI to coordinate amongst school districts provide resources that might be Outreach for some school districts so
they can join purchasing but they also provide Consulting Services um as well as curriculum implementation Services as well as sharing resources that might be scarce but necessary in smaller districts like hard of needed hearing services and other special education services they also do driver's education do you see their cards thank you for representing us on that innocence are consistent and yeah no it's really it's really a lot of fun they are starting to do a lot of really Innovative things in terms of helping um students or teachers and future teachers require licensing to fill some of the shortages that we have particularly like I know last year they had a big push around licensing substitutes it was really needed this year I think they're trying to work into more regular licensing and things like that
so it's interesting to watch good thank you very much any other updates um I just wanted to give a shout out she's nothing in here to get my shout out um but miss Tamara Stanley showcased her beautiful voice at a men's Badger basketball game she was legit on TV her and her husband and their lovely musical group I think I took like five pictures of the big screen and sent it to her um but they sang the national anthem it was beautiful and then all of the African-American fraternities and sororities did a stroll what happened as well so it was very fantastic but cool to see someone in our school district represented within the community so there's updates um that we'll move on to public comment we have one public comment um from Laura Olson
Dugan's parents here in the district and her images board thank you for approving the vasd interim educational Equity statement on December 5th 2022 as a diversity Ally and a parent of a 2019 lgbtq IA the ASD graduate statement expanded I'm curious when this will change from an interim statement to a permanent statement I suspect it was made in turn because of the critical importance of making the wording as inclusive as possible and hopeful that the statement will migrate from interim to permanent best regards or else and thank you again so great to be back and again I think as we are working towards the finalizing a strategic plan over the course of the next few months we will have a permanent interim statement that will truly capture all of the diversity that you want to
