001stand please your house with the Pledge of Allegiance I pledge of Al to of the United States of America and to the for it stands one nation under God indivisible with liy and justice for all the pink the school board will conen to post session tonight to consider the employment promotion compensational performance evaluation data any employ rules for government provid P jurisdiction for exercises responsibility under Wisconsin statutes 1985 grand1 Grand C for the head varsity football baseball coach head varsity football coach bus driver bookkeeper business manager high school math teacher the superintendent evaluation and um support staff and certified staff compensation um we will begin with a presentation from the Multicultural Club Mr here Dan all right hey guys how's everybody doing um we're here for the Multicultural Club Danny is our VP Molly is

002our president all right uh we're just going to go over some of the things that we do and then also uh we also brought some food in because that's always kind of what we do every other week um a student comes in all right [Music] okay uh so what is a multiculture club um we meet every other week students give presentations on different countries in these pres uh presentations students give information about different countries and cultures the presentations cover general information such as population country size GDP and other topics the best part of the presentation we learn what kind of uh food people eat and what kind of music they listen to and just other cultural Customs that go on in most other countries um and I thought you know uh Multicultural Club is really

003something awesome out here since especially 14% of our population is Hispanic and growing considerably like uh so it's just something that you know um is really awesome um it's student Le uh I I'm ah head of uh student conso and people get elected there uh this is you come by choice and numbers have drawn considerably the last two years I think we're at 26 27 people and that's up seven from last year and a few more from the year before uh students team up in small groups or individual present on a given country you know like uh the first one we did was South America and Central America so that kids can choose out of those uh two our continents and then uh right now we're doing Africa so I think the last group went

004was Nigerian they made some Nigerian peanut stew which was actually really awesome uh but they uh I mean also like how many kids like do you get to actually want to like cook a meal especially a meal that is so different from meals that we usually eat you know what I mean um uh over uh a few months ago a few of our students teamed up with Dina Sanders and her ESL KN a few months back Daniel was there Daniel will tell you a little bit about it oh yeah um we teamed up and um we we were able to come here at school and helped translate for uh Hispanic families and people who came here and um we helped set up uh most of the things are on YouTube so that was pretty pretty

005nice we had a lot of Hispanic people helping which most of them were part of the Multicultural Club so um yeah so um yeah uh the multi sorry I accidentally wrot the student council but the Multicultural Club usually goes on a field trip last year we went to the global Fest which is in Milwaukee it's a awesome uh it was at the state Fairground and it was awesome uh you go there they had there's about 15 to 16 different countries there and you go go there and you can check out uh they had little displays and questions and um then you could go to a bunch of different food venders and they had like little tastes from so many different um countries um the one thing uh but this year uh we weren't unfortunately able

006to go it's the first week of our city practice and um it would have been uh hard to get it going uh here's uh an example of one of the presentations that uh we did um during the school year now this is this was Daniel's Group okay so me and my friend Brandon Brandon maor we made this presentation for the Multicultural Club about NWA and uh something cool about this presentation was that my friend Brandon he's from nicar himself so he spoke about things that he lived through and um how how different Nara is from D County at the US overall so right here he wrote hi my name is Brandon I was born and raised in NWA I lived in capital of NWA manwa man was a small Capital but there are beautiful Parts

007such as as how little there just one of the best parts of manwa and there's also a Metro Center which is Center mana and um usually start off by um introducing our countries we also have sections to um to our country which in this pation we had land culture Life Food music and economy and in each section we give um a superficial uh intro into the things that um the country contains such as Gora fa other different types of um plants and animals as well as uh country service spacee and uh different types of species we also have uh geography of the country which um for Nia uh these that Coast uh the Caribbean Sea in the Pacific Ocean as well as Honduras and Costa Rica and we also have a big map that shows

008exactly where it is in the world Central America let's talk about cultural life um how the how the country can be and Traditions as well um let's talk about populations how many people live in the country big or small there still a lot to be to be found in these countries and food here's where uh um you get um for this presentation we make be in a mail which is a dessert but for multiple presentations you can make a meal desserts breakfast anything you really want anything any food that really interests you or you you think could be really good but we made a dessert it's basically um pineapple with sugar really simple but us tonight uh we brought you a variety of different things but sad can answer that question we brought you or

009I made it uh we made pork tacos that I roasted overnight and then um white corn tortillas um Mexican street corn and then all the toppings to go on your uh tacos and then Trace Le cake so everybody when uh this presentation's done either we can bring you a plate or you can go grab one of your own as many tacos as you'd like those talk about music and how um different cultures different countries different types of music genres are more popular within uh different groups of people so for example in nicar and SOA are two of the most popular types of music and and um in our meetings we usually um use a third party producer to play music and uh while we eat we play the music and uh we just talk eat

010eat the food and uh just have a good time and we talk about um this country has a different economy uh SWA one of the poorest countries but it's mainly based on agricultural production so yeah um yeah so just uh this is what we do every other week and we just get together and like you said Danel we'll give a presentation e and then basically we just talk the rest of them you know as a as the whole group sit around and eat and talk which is nice you know what I mean so uh thank you guys very much uh thank you yeah if you guys want we can serve you guys up a plate or however you guys would like if you guys are even hungry or not um you serve us okay oh

011tell us so are you're fluent in Spanish yes okay so then Brandon Brandon yeah I'm not this he's his language is Spanish or is his language U his language is Spanish but he's learning English uh he's been here for two years I think so his speak uh his English is not as good as Spanish is is Prim yeah yeah yeah and you have a specific country of Interest or just the whole thing is interesting just the whole thing I really enjoyed the club last year and so I continued it through this year and I really enjoy making food for people that's what I want to go and do after high school so just really awesome well thank you it was very very nice presentation did anybody else have questions for them um we'll move to

012guest comments and first we have um Justin bit so just if you you can go there you can go here just give us your name your address and um go all right U my name is Justin boritz uh 3335 Matthew Road St Bay um I didn't bring any tacos tonight so I'm sorry about that tonight I'm here on behalf of parents community memb and students we are interested in starting the process of adding another gym space to our school our goal is to take the time necessary to develop a wellth thought out solution with intention of bringing it to a referendum possibly in April 2025 I'm confident in the support of the community as we've already received verbal and written Ving from nearly 100 individuals in our initial discussions importantly there's a committed group of

013people that are ready to lead this effort willing to participate in the community conduct surveys and do all the required steps to make this idea reality the current lack of gym space has presented numerous challenge challenges which has become especially noticeable during my time coaching fourth grade basketball the most notable not notable include uh limited practice times with teams finishing as late as 8:30 and 9:00 p.m. on school nights and many teams not even being able to practice at all our current elementary lock rooms are used for storing chairs and have limited space for players to change and teams to gather before games and during halftime the girls locker room doesn't even have any lockers um one example of this is last week Thursday a fifth grade basketball game did not finish until 1 p.m.

014with the traveling team not being home until 10:30 uh the elementary gym being not available for Elementary fiad classes for around 20 days a year uh due to other school functions going on um beyond the athletic concerns there are potential benefits such as offering more programs and classes by the physical education teachers opportunities to host uh ternent style events which can bring in Revenue as well as alleviate having to travel outside the county to have teams participate in tournament settings uh Mr luk he had shared some potential designs uh from a few years back including one option that is a space for Community Fitness weight room facility uh which is pretty much the trend now when you see new uh gyms going up like doing that space for the the community so it really gets

015that Community Buy in um considering Sim similar projects going on in the neighborhood now seems like the opportune time to explore this idea further I kindly request the addition of this matter to the February agenda um additionally please let me know how we can actively contribute to this process and that's it thank you okay so it's not an agenda item um we can certainly add it to the February agenda um is anybody any general questions do you have a core committee um in place right now we don't have a committee in place right now I have talked to some some of the members that were on the last committee committee and they definitely want to be part of it but yeah we're willing to go um you mentioned the referendum so part of the intention

016is to attempt to uh get some money raised to supplement some of that and then the balance would go to the referendum is that kind of the process right I mean there's a couple different options one is we get the referendum for like the plan designed that would came up and then the fundraising could be you know the exas on top of it some of the you know things that the referendum didn't include okay um but yeah I'm open to you know suggestions and what back and feedback from the community on how that comes off okay so we will have that on the February agenda get that time great um I can't read this name it's the way name Above westl So wants to speak on shirts so if you'll state your name and address

017for the record be great [Applause] hello my name is West Long my address is 472 Matthew I'm a 10th grader at seasol high school this is a little backstory of how my business evolved my dad Lucas is a fifth generation farmer in sebasol which led us to Miss Ann's auction where my parents purchased two push mowers for me at a very young age then around 4 grade my mom Alissa and my grandma Tammy jillet purchased me with my first riding Walmart since then we've had elderly neighbors asked our family if we could help them with Lawn Care landscape Etc which led other businesses such as DC Custom Creations and J Property Service to subcontract my services I love what I'm doing and asking for yall support to continue for me West Long family friends and

018neighbors to be able to wear my attire not only for support and advertisement for my business and wear my attire to school and school events thank you for your time and I hope for your support I got some hand notes I just got two for that table and two for this table so if you guys want to sh your look up and whatever you want to be hello my name is Lucas long and my family and I were here last month with a small group of supporters on topic of my son being able who wears his business shirts with big Richard Lawn Care logo on them to school and school events I have some questions and some concerns why was this not on the agenda why wasn't this able to discussed about on the last

019meeting and why we haven't been contacted by anybody about this issue or is it just going to get stuck into the rug after finding out this issue wasn't on the agenda we sent emails out to board members plus Mr luky and Mr schaer thank you for all those who took the time to read them questions from Mr Lui you said in your email look at the pages I got them numbered and highlighted uh you can assume that the board did not request the agenda item then the board is in agreement that with the current carrying out the student dress code the board is an agreement then shouldn't there have been a vote and if there was a vote weren't all parties why weren't all parties notified of the out so number two last month you

020mentioned petition and did not present it to the school board uh just ran out of time wasn't able to present a petition to you at all number three petition for the school board for to consider should have been should have a resolution with a list of signatures matching printed names and addresses uh P petition I present you guys is a very general vag petition just all just to get all of our supporters' voices heard and didn't realize that it had to be 100% legal to be considered uh we can certainly make this whole issue a legal one if need days number four uh signatures from outside the school district uh do not represent constituents the school board government uh right we have open enrollment correct uh don't waste this matter on their child's educational issues

021all and all I ask is this be resolved to stop wasting time an issue that doesn't even violate the School dress code and one more thing Mr ly I remember you saying to West in our conference with Mr schaer about you and no one in your neighborhood would hire big Richard's L here because of it meaning name meaning that is on his shirt uh because of that I say shame on you as a school superintendent isn't it your job to support and help encourage and support children's futural Futures uh again thank you for your time um as to why it wasn't on the agenda Mr long yes the school board heard you the school board had received communication from Mr liy on the matter and was in agreement with the action that was taken so

022we didn't need to vote that point in time we no one no one requested to bring it forward to the agenda no no no board member requested requested to bring it to the forward to the agenda because it seemed like everyone was in agreement with um the communication we we received from Mr liy there's no vot there's no change and I was and it wasn't an agenda it wasn't um we didn't have a formal request to bring it forward to the agenda this meeting from so that's why it's not on the agenda okay can I request it to be on the next month's agenda to this to be discussed about and get resolved because you're asking if a board member wants on next month or be on next month yes do any of you would

023any of you like my concern is there's nothing to be resolved in my head we have a dress code we're executing the dress code it doesn't I think it's hold on I think it's awesome you're starting a business I encourage that and I think it's awesome you're selling it it just shouldn't be worn on a public school it doesn't violate anything on our dress code though what's that it doesn't violate anything on our dress code well that's a matter of our I have the dress code is actually in the packet I gave you I have it highlighted we didn't have an issue with I'm just telling why there's nothing it just echo of him all the issues facing education today I would not put this in the top 1,000 of issues whether or not my

024kid can wear a certain um shirt or sweatshirt to school I would put that at 2010 and whatever this in the board I think is a unanimous this the interpretation of Mr liie in in the dress code is his interpretation and we support Mr L so I guess you're saying that you know the larger majority of voices heard matter and the small voices heard don't matter in this world I don't think it's an issue of Y and N it's an issue of interpretation po poor is our understanding not at all I think I think the story that you brought to the school board doesn't reflect reality I've been around this community for a long time and I've known your son for a long time the story you brought to the schoolb that is recorded about

025how we got his nickname is not what I've heard for many many years do you mean you haven't heard I'm just that's my kids in his class call him by that name it's a nickname I understand and you know what I can't change my family name last name from being this isn't about your family well it kind of starts to be you're spinning into that and it isn't about him starting a business that's awesome well that's the the perception that you guys told us is it's an inuendo someone in your family made some up we can't get excuse me somebody in my family made something up not made something up um there's a there's a back there's a back meaning to the to the name which is objectionable so we want to discuss this next

026month we'll put it on the you're going to put down put down my family name the agenda we can't discuss it it's not on tonight's agenda let's put it on the agenda for February and get this result yes dress code on the agenda right um thank you for coming Mar Megan M Tracy wallet okay um I just oh you do want to come I'm sorry I do I have been coming to pretty much every board meeting except for a few in the past years I normally don't comment but I feel that things have been getting a little out of hand so I feel it is my responsibility as a taxpayer and a parent to bring a few things to light I do not want answers till the end and if you cannot answer I would

027like an email answering my questions in the next day or two I know I only have 3 minutes and I'm aware of this first I'd like to say that Administration whether it is superintendent principal Etc you need to base things off of facts it should never be based on opinion how things are perceived or hearsay big Richard's Lawn Care is a business that was started by a young entrepreneur he is being told that wearing his business name on shirts sweatshirts Etc is against sast Po's dress code as a taxpayer and a parent whose son has a sweatshirt which was paid for by him out of his hardworking money is being told that repercussions are going to be put in place if anyone wears the big Richard's Lawn Care logo I want to know why I

028want to know the facts and written policy that states this fact I also think it is sad that because of how others perceive this and other things how it can be such a negative impact on a business a person's confidence Etc shame on you for not sticking to the facts second I want to address the employee turnover situation I do not know any inside information but looking from the outside the board should really take a closer look at what's really going on it's pretty clear to me there is a definite problem even going over the survey so quickly a few months ago I saw the big picture A comes from the top down this is your job responsibility on the board to support our staff and make sure things are running smoothly to also keep

029in mind the best interests of the community number three if someone could enlighten me regarding School budgets I think I have been here for almost all of the financial audit presentations I work with numbers so maybe that's why I'm so confused how can you fund how can your fund balance be so healthy and RK and then in the next breath Administration is saying we have to cut the budget we need another referendum Etc I do not think that would be a good idea right now a lot of questions are already being asked in the community because of this referendum question all I can tell them is watch the minutes and there is your answer thank you for your time and please if you need my email address or phone number I'm sure the office has

030it um well well I don't think we those AR agenda items so I don't think we can answer or discuss um I would we like to anyway so would you like Mr ly to First address this via email sure anyone opposed to that no I think that's inappropriate okay that's what we'll do thank you thank you thank you um does are there any items anyone wishes to remove from the consent agenda if there are not that is sent and there are three donations Mike Madden $1,000 for the Eco lab $500 for people's services from the GL Lodge Restaurant and $250 for the robotics Club from PCO thank you to those three um persons and enties um we'll move to administrator reports and begin with Mrs marra I don't I did have a lot in my

031report on this month but I do have some updates I would like to share just wanted to give the board an update on our stride program just want everyone to know that we still remain very to capacity at our stri program so more and more people are you know know about the program and we get referrals probably two to three referrals um new referrals every week so I just wanted everyone to know that it's a really really helpful program that remains um that remains um full which is a wonderful resource to be able to give our kids um you know when the New Year rolls around this is when District assessment starts um when we start preparing for state dat assessments happy to say that our access testing which is where all our English Learners

032um take every year is almost complete so um the teachers and the students have been working really really hard forward training is um complete so the forward exam is complete and I want to thank Melissa malore for facilitating that training when I was away last week and then finally we got our boot camp date set for the ACT um and that those letters are going to be going out to all of our families uh towards the middle of next so things are starting to get pretty busy that's all I have to report did I read some place that the stri program is is financially I don't I don't I okay all I know is the united wayes in their campaign right now to you know so that could be connected to that but I haven't

033heard that it's directly related to a the drive program okay Mr Hills thank you um we just like to take a moment uh in the report I included in there about the spelling be uh we were able to hold that on Monday this week and uh we had 12 students who participated uh the event itself ended up going 21 rounds uh we had two students was back and forth between them um finishing first and representing our school at the regional B will be Charlotte grenell uh finishing second was winning pounds and then uh Glen Augustine took third um the regional be will be held February 13th it's at Kiwani High School uh the other thing I'd like to mention is that the pulse did a news story on the poverty simulation um the reporter from

034the pulse had heard about the simulation at another event that she was at uh so she wanted to do a an article about that and I'll send you the link so you can read it but it was nice kind of summarized uh the information from that day as well as just some additional information about the county and poverty that exists here was a great article thank you Mr shaer thank you uh this U last week we had um we had gone through our pride assemblies with both the Middle School and High School uh those are um awesome it was an excellent turnout but uh the focus after our um middle school assembly um we had Mike mccardy who came here to represent the VFW Post uh 30 uh 88 um which conducts a patriot pen

035essay contest that's held every year uh for students and grades uh 6 through 8 uh the theme of the contest for this year was how uh are you inspired by America we had over um 150 entries for this um contest that were were submitted and out of the 150 Sebastapol had four students who were in the top six out of 150 entries um and the winner was uh Ella groer took first place Sienna robach took third uh meline gash was Fifth and shayon Asher was six so a very nice representation uh M Mardi also talked with the students that had um submitted their essays how well written they were and how difficult it was to to make decisions but SAS P was well represented with their U participation as well as the quality of their

036essay so great accomplishment thank you thank you for recognizing our two school counselors for counselor appreciation as a former school counselor I know they're often on some here does anybody have questions they want to direct on the athletic director taled report there will to the superintendent report uh there's nine technical corrections to policies for this month and the policy Comm policies I don't have report committees um the communication committee met and um discussed the next issue of the P times which will out first part of March lots of fun and interesting articles in that again um at meet and confer there were two topics um one was smart one was Smart Watchers some teachers feel like the smart watches is really just an extension of the telephone that the student can sit during class and

037scroll through it so um that brought that forward was going to take it to Mr schaer Mr schaer and the high school middle school staff would discuss that and um if they have a recommendation I guess it would come back to us for approval of the um electronic devices policy the other was um reest a leave of absence request um right now we have um people could get a one time uh leave of absence over their two personal days um if they want to extend go to some special event whether you know it might be a wedding out of state out of country it might be um somebody's graduation from the service whatever it is they get the one time opportunity um the request came forward to just allow that anytime time um so that

038if a with the focus on it being their student or their child being involved in school activities being involved and allow that any time with their student being allowed in the school activity this doesn't mean field trips it's um you know if the students going to stay track or uh some special speaking contest or Destination Imagination that they be able to do that anytime um I don't know if we can we discuss this under this committee report and what we want to in the future because it's a committee report right now so action that's the that's the frame on it um we'll put it on the agenda for next month does anybody have clarification questions that you need to ask so you can think about it over the next month well one thing that came

039out this want to do this once in a lifetime and some of the discussion was looking at the policy so that maybe once every five years The Faculty ask for whatever you except that wasn't the request the request was any time a student was involved in activity that I know but that Flo out of that so we can discuss that under that topic next time right along more often so we'll add that to the agenda next time those were the two things that of me who was there hi you were there you were there there there was there were only those two right right the anniversary committee met um Friday night we have retro night for Pioneer ti so dig in your closet and find something old to wear or come in your current Pioneer

040wear it doesn't matter um we'll have some people wearing some things we'll have some things for display be kind of fun um in march on March 20th we're going to have a bul talk with Hela Bob and her nephew David Walker um if you know hela's story she came from Nazi Germany when she was about four years old and has a lot of stories to tell about that that'll be at 4:00 in the afternoon on March 20th and she was a longtime employee in different Pac here F so she'll Maybe cover some of that too and um uh we're talking about maybe having the old the bookmobile I don't know who knows what the bookmobile was come they've restored they're restoring it it's been restored they're putting it's getting an engine on we're talking about

041having that come during the um who's restoring the book fair who's restoring I don't know John John well guess it's it's turned over now to John soer and Emily biringer and they've got a 503 c or whatever it's called um so that be kind of fun for people to see or for kids to walk through that have never experienced that um and then Clayton Kint brought forward um a proposal we're still working on that of kind of a tile mural to commemorate the 100th anniversary so that's what's that committee is talking about so no questions we move to budget all right budget for this month our fund balance for fund T cash on hand the end of December is 2,559 our major uh payments for property taxes come here in January February payroll on the

04215th of January is about $23,000 so $238 203 up about $335,000 that's why we need the large fund balance order to get through this shortterm uh parts of the year and now we've had the uh first ger the checks from the municipalities Comming in January we pretty good shape there um and fun 50 is in a good P pace for Revenue that fun 50 is our food service so uh student lunch is and expenses there Revenue there's pump so that's good and then also I want to share with you about the private school voucher Levy and you'll see it's gone up every year us to not exist back in 201 1920 our school district had none some School District had some and this is just from us this isn't the miluk we seing and uh

043ocean deal so it's keep ticking up it's up to $22,000 that money comes to us but we send it to private schools and that's going to increase as the legisl keep making their moves in that direction but you can see this 5 years ago was nothing so think it's going to keep ticking away now we spend we send $22,200 milon every year this year we sent 22,000 right that's not calling the money that comes off the top to go into Kos Milwaukee so that is that for a private school in our school district area correct that our residents are attending and their parents qualify for the aid so then we get the revenue and then we send so I mean it just it is in our community it's not going to Madison no this doesn't

044go to Madison this is directly for ours there's a when the budget comes out the first cut goes to Milwaukee Reen kosha and now that's ended up Statewide over it so we actually there's two cuts off the top of the P I think it's also interesting what was being proposed by the assembly uh regarding 4K yes support for 4K now we don't get any we can't count 4K in our we count 4K but they count as 6 FTE 6 right and so what the legislator to the bill that's on proposed right now is uh would require school districts to license or U yeah license agreement with a local daycare and then 95% of the money we get for 4K would filter to the local daycare if they were licensed and qualified under the program so

04595% of your 4K money would go uh come in and go all so you'd have to basically run your 4K program on 5% of the money I don't think it's going to make that one I'll make it but you never know at least it's the first kick of the can for it if they're going to the legisl going to incorporate that daycare under the Govern agreement with the school then they should also fund it dayare is getting so much attention right now that I think it's something we need to watch closely right it' be another mandate in the state that we would have the fund or we'd have to pay for with no additional funds proposing to cover day whatow correct the money will come in and flow out yeah was there explanation of the

04695% why I don't know why it's 95 it's here in our school for 4K correct if we change right now are fourk half a day no four Cas five days all day yeah so it's all day yeah and and they want 95% it's just the bill of this point the idea behind it is they want to support dayc carees which lose money on very young children because they have to sta those very big ratios and this is a way they that those who are pushing the see or supporting they and their intention is good but not to take it away from the schools that's problem from the well this is they've been doing on mandates for longer than I've been alive right so so they just want to cover they want to increase the care

047of coverage across the state going through public education without adding dollars is their this answer we'll watch that don't anybody El have other questions budget there aren't any will to facilities uh the greenhouse got final projects done so that's over and on our inservice day was January 15th they came and worked on the heating especially on the second floor because there was a bubble in the line and that's now better S those are two big things questions on facilities so is there anything at the convention that sasal should pay pay attention to yes it was a great convention about 3,300 people in attendance uh some outstanding Keynotes Sean cubby was one he's the New York Times best-selling author and the son of Steven cubby um Sean has written a book called The Leader in Me

048he talked about the importance of kids having the opportunity to take leadership roles they become leaders who are best for the world not the best in the world uh he also said people will forget what you did or even s that they will not forget how you made them feel uh I spent a lot of time on leadership talking about leaders need to trust and Inspire not command and control one of the other keynote speakers was John konis from ABC news anchor of 2020 prime time and what would you do which is being uh revived now and will be airing soon he rose from the childhood of poverty by believing in himself never giving up and always doing the right thing and he talked about how we can become active bystanders standers to acts of

049discrimination and he has certainly in his life discovered some discrimination uh that was uh waged at him uh very good speaker very uh kind uh likable man I attended a section on Career Readiness the uh Wisconsin Career Readiness standards are being revised there will be three different standards with some points underneath the first being career Readiness skills the second learning Readiness skills and then Readiness skills and we are fortunate uh that our ces7 had a person on this new committee uh to revise these standards Marcy Kung Waldren from cisa 7 and uh she will be involved in implementing these standards in 2026 27 there are $5,000 stiens available for teachers to work in the area of math science and rur languages standards any teachers who are interested uh would be eligible for those standards um

050I also attended a session by one of the WB attorneys on challenges to curriculum and instructional materials in the library and uh there were some cautions given about without materials in the library or in the curriculum including State statutes would indicate materials must reflect cultural diversity and the pluralistic nature of America and the sighting was 121.0 for N1 for n h and the point was made that removing books could also violate the First Amendment so some real cautions there about legal implications on books and materials and they talked about a Review Committee and the fact that when we have a committee that would review materials those uh are open to the public and they are open meeting laws that must be followed the wasb March 2022 Focus uh publication has a lot of information on

051these challenges to uh handling uh in school districts State superintendent Jill underly uh recognized Senator Cole and the tremendous contributions he made to education in our state uh to students through his scholarship programs to assisting districts and getting grants just uh a real States person and uh he was well recognized at the convention for his contributions to education State superintendent underly also talked about Mental Health Services she talked about misinformation vitreal and value that we see in today's society and she emphasized focusing on what is best for all kids not focusing on fighting back but looking at it from a positive standpoint uh I also attended a halfday session on nav ating challenging discussions to engage your community some great uh tips on how to do that dealing with misinformation uh building relationships modeling constructive

052two-way communication and this group presented a handout of 15 things school board members can do to boost public confidence in public schools governor iers also spoke uh he talked about the impact of the state budget on education another keynote speaker was Maya Payne who addressed some of the issues regarding act 20 uh the reading emphasis uh that is uh resulting from act 20 and uh she talked about the need to work with parents so that they can help their children with reading I also attended a session on growing your own and Kyle I think I forwarded an email to you from Leah Luke I fored on Detroit both small okay um and that is a uh there are 87 State chapters including one at serent Bay which I think could be helpful to us getting

053h a chapter started here to grow your own teachers it's uh a national effort it's similar to when I was in high school where we had FTA future teach of America they don't have that anymore no and uh this is showing some results the kids get involved in career exploration there are State and national conferences there's leadership development there's Hands-On learning uh it's a a great way for kids to see the front side of Education they see the backside because they all go to school we all went to school we saw the backside but not everybody sees the front side until they have an opportunity to get involved with something like this and on the panel for this discussion there was a woman from Wisconsin Heights School District and there are four districts in her

054area which have come together and they are awarding scholarships to students going into education and then the students come back to those school districts after getting the scholarships that's the agreement that they have to come back uh for instance if we awarded a scholarship to a student then he or she would be required to come back to teach in our district and each of these four districts is putting $224,000 a year into a fund to grow that fund so that they can provide those scholarships to those kids and one of the people on the panel was from W Madison and they are doing some research on all of this to um see see the effectiveness of it and he also said that hosting student teachers is an effective way if we have a student teacher

055here for instance in language arts uh that student would be more encouraged to come back to Castle they have a positive student teaching experience I also attended a session on vaping and it was put on by the um American one Association and and they do have some interesting treatment options available um the reference was made to some of the common reasons for students vaping being anxious being stressed or depressed begin to start vaping and then they become addicted and we need to look at moving from punishment to treatment and support to help these young people uh dealing with that harmful issue I attended a fair Aid Coalition meeting and that group for their upcoming agenda is to work toward increased bilingual bicultural categorical Aid high cost special ed categorical Aid and high cost Transportation Aid

056along with the general Aid guarantee of $1,000 per people um the assembly met on Wednesday afternoon all of the resolutions were approved that you saw uh there were a couple of amendments for instance on the stiens for cooperating teachers it was amended to say that would be paid by the state not by the district there was also an amendment on seclusion and restraint to include reducing the incidents and improving systems um I do have some legislative updates too I attended a session on that I'll talk about under that agenda item uh the one resolution that came in late uh that we talked about was the one from Milwaukee regarding the testing of students whose English is not a uh first language for them that did not consider get considered because the Assembly felt that it

057should have been submitted in the required time frame instead of submitted late lots of things going on at that convention it was a great one and uh learned a lot I think they gave that that session on um book challenges last year we didn't set up a committee last year in case we had book challenges did it seemed like you had a question when she was talking oh I just did school of education at ww Madison does offer free tuition for teaching students that return to Wisconsin and teach in Wisconsin it's a reimbursement program so after they complete so much they get reimbursed for their tuition so I think we're going to see more and more of that shortage continues and want you Daniel and Molly and [Music] Mr back there does anybody want a

058second round can they clean up I don't I want you have to see want to disturb your your dessert was really good very good very good thank you thank you just just discuss there any discussions about marijuana because you know we we are in an island now surrounded by marijuana states and there's a push in Wisconsin but on the other side of the argument there's data coming out all over place of in the marijuana that use today is the marijuana was around when we were in college and the devastating effects on mental illness and and anger and uh violence and all that coming out now is really pretty scary and is are are we as schools ready to deal with that I guess I'm saying is the is the school systems willing to take a

059position that we do or do not want another mind altering drug drug out there yeah and do they were discuss that I did not attend anything on that but that doesn't mean that there wasn't something because there were so many sessions yeah okay but you make a good point that you know there are some repercussions there it's a huge rep yes something for the School Board Association to take up as you said to take a position on should we be a state that allows or that um we don't have anything under board goals there's the seasal Town Park mandum of agreement which are you telling us this is yes sebas is happy with it sebasol can uphold its end and we're confident the town will uphold its end of it and I'm sorry you guys

060correct me where I'm wrong there's been a lot of coordination which is I think is great positive thing I think my interpretation both groups agree that we want to make it better so that's why there was so much um fine-tuning of wording um but and so we think it's U an improvement on before I think the intentions are there and like every year we can revisit and we'll see how it executes um so I think the recommendation is to sign this it helps the school for our um period and and good from your stand so the committee is happy with it the superintendent's happy with it does anybody have questions you know I guess the list of responsibilities for the school is kind of extensive I and I I realize that um you know not

061having a field our s is a disadvantage sometimes I look at this as a little bit of a user fee type system since we are going to be responsible for a lot of the after game and that sort of thing um just just by feelings on you know $10,000 might feel little on that that's that's that is a bargain for our school but the things here's some different and I think some of the stuff that is on on the school or on whatever is stuff that should be done anyway like breaking the field after G me what is that our responsibility what I was going to expand on is Town Park is here let me try this correct me a town park doesn't have to have a a a a game field they just have

062a park it's a town park and and we've actually talked about that they don't have to have it waa sanctioned they don't have to have the right distance on the bases it's a town park they don't have to have to have that um to have a wi sanctioned sporting field we do have to have that and if you survey and talk to ex- coaches and baseball players yes the the baseball players team should do that so um and the maintenance like you said if we had if we had ballparks in our school district uh property we would do all of this stuff the school would be responsible for it would cost more than 10,000 so that's been we so all that labor and all that stuff and upkeep and lawn mowing and watering and so

063all that and this is we've had some extensive conversations but um so I we do think we know the numbers going up so it's a valid thing to question but really it is a it's it's I think it's very reasonable if you really uh We've dug into it for a long time but on the funding of it stuff like that because let's say they didn't want to work with us and we they wouldn't let us choose a part because that's an option nobody thinks that's a good option and if we had to go to another field it' be worse no other field is as good as those fields are in our area to use right so that and and there's been a lot of good open discussion it's I thought there's been a good discussion

064kudos to Brooke and Mark for bringing all this together and a lot of discussion good and bad and arguments and that's healthy I think it's a it's an okay thing for and jointly there have been a lot of improvements to the baseball and the softball the school helped initiate I mean the school not the district but people all just say like book tank and her she the group that she's involved in was was very instrumental in getting the improvements done and getting the funding for that for those improvements so we we have a buy in on it unofficially I I agree with Richard I think they ask a lot considering this next door it's a town it's the town's Park all the kids who live in Sasa schol who go to this school use that

065their parents have already paid taxes on it but and on the other side I think you guys have worked very very hard on it I don't think you can fight City Hall first city hall so far because it's still their part so I guess PR grudgingly I say this is what you got to do I am I disappointed in the town that they have been so kind of stuck in the mud over this poooo poo poo thank you that's p o p but uh so and I I thank you guys for spending the time all the time you spent yeah so we have a interim clerk when you make your motion please State the motion in poll so that she can write it down um if there's a motion on this item move to approve

066the sasco Town Park memorandum of agreement as presented second all in favor say iOS motion Carri then we have the school calendar a survey on uh 61.7% of the families that responded said they prefer the calendar with spring break so then he would 43 if you want to approve that we would look for the motion to approve the calendar with spring break and I to approve the calendar with the spring break for [Music] 2025 a second questions or discussion all in favor say I opposed motion carried um then we have the second readings of the policies for public records and Food Services you can look for a motion on that I would move to approve the second reading of revised policies 8310 public records and 8500 Food Services for second second second by Keith a

067SC to discussion all in favor say I opposed motion Carri did you have anything legis L you wanted to talk to us about to Yes um there were some things that came up at the [Music] conference uh one was in regard to act 20 which is the early literacy instruction and there are some complications with the timelines in meeting some of the requirements of that 20 and there is a likely to be some trailer legislation to address some of those timelines particularly around the screeners and the identification of the screeners that would be used for that legislation so watch for that also uh the task force on treny in K12 education is in progress now so we will be hearing more about that which is always an important and challenging topic and uh WB has

068reg registered in opposition to AB 82 sb83 because posting an estimate of the acred interest on the ballot could open up a district to legal action from a constituent if the estimate is too far off from the final amount uh WSB does not feel that this legislation is likely to pass uh it's difficult to predict the interest on a u ballot and if it's incorrect that could be confusing to taxpayers so that's not likely to pass what was that what was the initiative is what that could you explain what the initiative is we have a be a referendum to yes 80,000 $80 million bond issue right it would tell you everybody how much interest would be oh the interest right well that changes every week yes and then the parental Bill of Rights uh has

069been passed by the assembly on the 18th so um I don't know if there's any more action on that but that is something I read that I read that they thought neighbors would need that yeah just passed on the 18th in the assembly and then there is a bill out there closing a loophole in school strip searches going to the governor the bill would make all forms of strip searching illegal in Wisconsin it is headed to the governor's desk and this is based on theuring uh a few years ago um then if you listen to the governor last night in the State of the State he has uh created an inter agency Council on Mental Health with a Statewide to come up with a Statewide plan to address Mental Health Services Statewide he referenced a

070raise your voice student Le group from Marill high school as being involved in a student LED effort to deal with student mental health the governor also focused on the workforce issue the child care crisis um he focused on public education at all levels and expanding paid family leave all under the workforce issue umbrella he called uh for 2024 to be the year of the worker in Wisconsin and and he also talked about a teacher apprenticeship program to provide more support for new Educators to keep them in the field because uh so many young educators are not staying in the field and obviously we need to have them desperately so um did a nice job I thought last night talking about some important was very postive issues yes okay thank you um you'll need a motion

071on the updated anticipated open enrollment activity report unless one of the administrators needs to speak to that uh you have a four column item in front of you it's first label special education that's per classroom by grade level for p through 12 uh this special education portion has a student service score of what we are currently offering for services and then the third columnist capacity and that tells you the space available of the special education programs all five or six programs we have to special are full of this time and grade levels that are full for open enrollment and this is next year would be third grade fifth grade and 10th grade now if we get a residential student at those grade levels they obviously still get educated here so there are no questions do
