Good evening, I'd like to call this meeting in order. Roll call, please. President Michael Flores. Here. Vice President Linda Heath. Here. Governing Member Chris Gillespie. Here. Governing Member George Arradondo. Here. Governing Member Victoria Quintero. Here. We have quorum. Good evening, everyone. Welcome. Happy New Year 2026. It's going to be the best year ever, right? Yes. So we can all stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. Moving on to the approval of the agenda. I make a motion to approve the agenda. Second. Motion's been made by Vice President Heath, seconded by Board Member Arredondo. All those in favor? Yes. Yes. Yes. Motion passes by all. Moving on to public participation. There is none. Moving on to the discussion and election of the governing board president. Thank you, Flores. I second that. Motion's been made by Board Member
Gillespie, seconded by Vice President Heath. All those in favor? Yes. Moving on to the discussion and election of governing board vice president. All those in favor? Yes. Yes. Motion passes by all. Thank you everyone for having me as your board president for the sixth year out of 14. Thank you for both. All right. Moving on to the principal's update. You're not going to throw me for a loop today. Okay. All right. Dr. Nittay Ferguson. Yeah we'll see. Good evening. I just wanted to talk about a few things for the high school. We talked about expressing our... Gratitude for all that CTE does but even over the break that continues our FFA program took students to a creed speak competition So just the time and effort that our teachers spend over their holidays is just always
phenomenal to see so I always like to acknowledge that where I can We also had probably over a hundred recovered classes well over 100 recovered classes from first semester. We've got about 283 kids who got credit in college courses first semester. So those numbers continue to grow for our campus, and that's always great to see as well. And then for sports, our boys basketball was in a tournament over break. I believe they took second. And then our wrestling team did really well over break as well. They had first through fifth places all over the place in various weights, so they did a phenomenal job. And then coming up, we have our big Florence basketball game this Friday. We also have cheer competing in their final competition this Friday up at the Coliseum. So those are
both upcoming events for us. Thank you. Thank you. Anthony? I'll say just one minor loop, not a... Mr. Chapman's on the IR list right now. First of all, Happy New Year to the board. Congratulations. Board president, vice president. One of our focuses at CAP was to find those students that stopped attending for whatever reason, particularly focusing on those seniors and senior pluses. We've successfully found quite a few of those students that reported on that. last month I believe you know finding them at their employers whatever wherever they were finding them happy to report that quite a few of those students have finished classes since and making strides towards graduation this coming May. So that's very exciting for us since the last board meeting we've had an additional four CAP graduates and three from CVA side.
Last month we went through the rigorous process of recertifying CVA as an Arizona Online Instruction, an AOI, with ADE. So the team met with the service education team from Rio Salado to present our case for continuing with CVA. We're pleased to announce that the panel approved our proposal and has recommended CVA for final approval with ADE and that goes through their board meeting their monthly board meeting which I think is happening in a couple of weeks. We're hoping it's just part of their consent agenda with a bunch of other schools. So that's just the next step in the process for approving CVA as you know for instruction. We do want to extend a thank you to our team who sat with us on our side, Melanie Edwards and Brynn Hodges of the Curriculum Department. Thank
you very much. Shannon McHugh, Cabe Liberta, Jacob Rivera, Melissa Clubb, Chris Lathan, and the CVA team. We all kind of had an integral role in answering the questions and presenting everything, but we want to extend a huge thank you to Mrs. Michaela Kidd, our CVA teacher. She answered a majority of the questions for them and kind of did, well, she did a fantastic job in just sharing what a day in the life of CVA is like for them, both as a teacher, as a student. So she did a phenomenal job. So, yeah, so we'll wait to hear on that. Thank you. Do we know the grand total of graduates since beginning of the school year? You would have. Mr. Bruno, do you know the answer to that? No, I think with the four grads, so
total, I think, I want to say we're at like a dozen for CAP and seven or eight for CVA. I didn't want to say six, seven. Thank you. All right. Principal Dix. Please note he did the gesture as well when you're writing it in the minutes. So we've had a lot of very... I don't know different and exciting things that have happened to the junior high in the last week and a half back at school. We had our first ever spelling bee at the junior high. So the classes did those all last Tuesday. By the end of the day they had names submitted for our first school spelling bee which was last Thursday. We had members of the district office came over to work as our judges. It went off without a hitch and we
have five amazing spellers ready to go to the district be at the end of the month. So we are very excited for them. It went. many rounds they were very competitive and it was really exciting to see them exciting to see them competing over something academic so we loved that. We also had SRP that came in yesterday. They came to one of our eighth grade science classrooms and were there all day and presented to all of the classes there and they talked about renewable energy. They talked about renewable students and they talked about careers within energy. It was a really amazing presentation. I was able to pop in there and I got a free. flashlight that is solar powered and they talked about all the different types of energy. My favorite presentation that they did
throughout the day was the campaign to turn it off and it was just amazing to see. They were talking about turning off the lights in your house essentially and so they did it in a really funny way and the kids, they had them talk about it afterwards about why it's so important and they talked about how much money could actually be saved by just turning off the lights. So it was fun. We have Cavett coming actually tomorrow on campus and they're going to go into the sixth grade classrooms. They did this last year and it was a really wonderful way for the high school students to come and work with the junior high students and they cover first aid and they set up mini stations and the kids go through the stations and so we
really appreciate the different partnerships that we have coming in between SRP and Cavett. We have a couple of field trips that are coming up this month. We have NJHS is going to a leadership summit. Civics Matters, so it talks about leadership in civics, and that is going to be on the 20th. And then on the 21st, we have our migrant students are going to the zoo. We also have Career Development Education Event for our very brand new FFA, and they are heading off to that. They're going to go, it's actually FFA, but it's our ag students, and they're heading off to that. We have nine different teams competing, and they are going to be... part of the South Central region and it'll be sixth through 12th grades competing in the different events that day. And
then they're going to a second one at CAC at the end of the month on the 30th. So they have two different events this month. And speaking of FFA and AG, I have to brag for a minute. Our new teacher, Kristen Coates, has worked really hard in our first every year that we have our team there. And there was a recent essay contest, and she had all of her students that are in FFA enter it, and 18 students won, and they won their FFA jacket. So they got the beautiful blue with the gold embroidery that's corduroy. And they intentionally said, it says Coolidge on the back instead of Coolidge Junior High, so they can use them all the way through their four years at the high school as well. So it was really exciting when
those came, when we got the picture of them. They have the students' names on them and everything. And they're currently right now being displayed, and then the students will get them in February when they are done being displayed. But she also submitted for a grant and won the grant and it got us 10 jackets for our chapter. So we have 10 jackets that students can check out and borrow if they don't have the funds to buy one on their own so that when they go to like show at the fair, all the students can have a jacket. So it was really exciting some of the things she's doing. She also got us a $1,200 grant for a chicken coop. So soon we will have little baby chicks and you'll be able to come over and
love on those. A $250 non-consumable materials, $150 for a pork grant. So we're going to be learning all about pigs. And $125 for specialty crops where the kids are going to be learning about. what goes into a salad and then they're gonna be making those in class. So she's just working on lots of different areas related to FFA, to ag, bringing those in and giving some kids some really great experience. There is a class pet, a little bunny rabbit in there that goes around each day and a couple of turtles. So there's lots of love on the animals in there. If you ever need an emotional support day, you can come on in and love on some of the animals we're collecting. Thank you. Thank you. Principal Bruno. We were saying she needs to come
to the board meeting and I said she has to bring the rabbit. Don said no. I don't know how I'm going to follow up the port grant and the junior high zoo. Try to give you some cliff notes. Thank you Dr. Dix. At Heartland Ranch kind of wrapping up at the end of December on the 17th our gifted and talented students as well as with the West School gifted and talented students and our students in the 21st century BizTown club went to the J.A. Town BizTown. It's a kind of a simulated city. The students learn about different. careers and trades. The students came back and I heard them when they all came back because they were just running and wanted to tell everybody about all the different things they were able to do and all
the different. Experiences they got to have and it's just as much of a joy for the staff members to get to take them and chaperone that to see all the hard work those students have been putting in with their I know they were really excited because they all had interviewed for some of those positions as the interviewer for some of those students it was great to see the end results of that. And then on the next day on the 18th Heartland held our annual jingle jog. That was fun on the last day of school. It was a lot of planning for a race that took about 10 minutes. because those kids sprinted. I was expecting a little bit of walkers and slacking and no, it was supermarket sweep. They took off the whole way. But
it was a great turnout. Parents were just lined up down the whole street, parked and lined up on the fences supporting them and cheering around. San and Mrs. Claus came and visited all the classrooms afterwards and we always had a nice sweet treat of a popsicle afterwards. I learned a valuable lesson of how long it takes to freeze an outer pop. So there was a really quick shopping spree that morning at Walmart, so I'd like to thank the front office for helping buy 400 popsicles. So something we learn for next year. Only in Arizona will we give an Otter Pop in December. It was warm enough still to do that, so it definitely worked out. We'd like to invite you to our upcoming Science and STEM Night. We're coming on the 28th at 5 p.m.
We're expanding that this year making it a little bit bigger with the number of stations we have and the breadth and width of the stations that we are doing having several options for the younger students as well as the older students. A lot of times sometimes the younger ones kind of feel left out with those engineering activities so it's going to be split amongst the two grade bands by each letter of the STEM acronym. And then we're also creating a little passport that the students have to get stamps or stickers for so when they leave or they visit each thing they get a little take home bag that they can work on those with their parents as well. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. So ending December, like Mr. Bruno said, at West
we had our music shows that last week. We had two music shows the last week before break. They were, as always, a huge success. Mr. Stewart works really hard with our students, and so we're really excited to see all of those performances. The last day before break we had Churrolicious come to school to reward students. So this the reward was just for second quarter perfect attendance. They came at the end of first quarter for us as well. So each student who had perfect attendance second quarter got a little churro treat and then teachers were able to buy also after which they also always enjoy. The our reward for our first semester perfect attendance is with all of the schools we're going to the basketball game. It's a. Ms. Sheridan Ferguson and Dr. Ferguson have arranged
all this. So it's a G-thumb. There you go. And so we're taking a group of perfect attendance students from all the schools in February to that. So we're very excited for that. At West we are allowing our teachers some of our teachers who have perfect attendance to be the chaperones as well. So they kind of get rewarded for their perfect attendance along with the students. So that's that's how that's how that's how Ms. Sheridan and I decided to send people were like well you've been here you've been here so. We have a couple of staff members on our site, so we were very impressed. At West, we've been looking at the new DIBLs, some of the new DIBLs data, the new pieces of it, and just how to best utilize that for classroom instruction, adjusting
instruction, reteaching the classroom. So just trying to learn as much of those new components that are coming out as we can and to make sure that it's impacting our students in the most positive way. And then we would like to invite you to our annual culture night coming up on January 29th. At the end of the month we're very excited to see our students showcase their different cultures throughout the school. And what time is that. 6 p.m. Yes 6 o'clock. Sorry my calendar is not open so I can't look to see my invite. Thank you. Governing Board Outstanding Character Award. Kelly Ferguson. I would like to call it Miss Emery Paddock. Ms. Emory Paddock is a fifth grade student at West School. She was nominated by her fifth grade math teacher Ms. Monteclado. So here's
what Ms. Monteclado had to say about Ms. Emory. Emory has been an outstanding student since the beginning of the school year. She consistently demonstrates excellence in both academics and behavior by putting forth her best effort in all areas of learning. Emory takes pride in her work stays focused and shows a strong sense of responsibility in the classroom. She approaches challenges with a positive attitude and is always respectful to both peers and adults. Her dedication kindness and willingness to do the right thing make her a true role model for her classmates. SPEAKER 2 Mr. Mark Brunette. SPEAKER 3 I'd like to call up Heartland Ranch second grader Mr. Eddie Perez. It gives me the greatest pleasure to nominate Heartland Ranch second grade student Mr. Eddie Perez for our January student character award. I've only had the
pleasure of knowing Eddie for six months, but I can say without a doubt that he is one of the most thoughtful, caring, and responsible elementary students that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He is responsible in that he is an amazing big brother also to his younger brother, Andrew, who also attends Heartland. Sometimes Andrew might need help getting to his class because he's younger or having a rough morning, wanting to leave the car at drop-off. Without fail, Eddie is there, always there, waiting patiently, helping wherever and whenever he can. Never an eye roll, a deep sigh or frustration, just a look and an act of love. Besides being a tremendous help to his family, he's also very caring to his fellow classmates. I'd like to share a short little story, if you'll indulge
me, of how I decided I'd like to nominate Eddie. Once a quarter, we bring in an ice cream truck on campus as sort of a little fundraiser for our students. The kids get very excited and they buy $2, $3 ice creams. Almost everyone brings money, and the ones that don't, the school covers them. Well, Eddie didn't know this. And so while at lunch, I was walking around on duty, and I saw he had brought, I think it was a $10 bill with him. He was so excited, and I said, are you going to get the big one, Eddie? You know, you can only get one thing. He said no. He said he knew he had a couple of friends that didn't have any money, so he wanted to buy their ice cream for them. I
knew right then and there I had found my character winner. And even this week, Eddie had, I think, three big pieces of pizza, and he was giving it out like he was Oprah. I said, Eddie, what are you doing, man? You're not going to have any food for yourself. And he said, well, one of my classmates was having a hard time, so I wanted him to feel better, so I gave him a piece of pizza. And so just little things like that that make him such an amazing young man. Eddie, they say, character is doing the right thing even when no one is looking. I want you to know that your acts of service and kindness do not go unnoticed and are appreciated. It's an absolute pleasure to have you as a Wildcat. Thank you.
Eddie also lost two teeth today. It's a big deal. Dr. Dix. Junior High will be recognizing Lauren Trujillo. Lauren was nominated by Missy Seghiri, her ELA teacher, Mr. Zen, her math teacher, and Miss H, her science teacher. Lauren is always on task and is truly a hidden gem in the classroom. She is a quiet leader who is kind-hearted, respectful, and soft-spoken, and enjoys working alongside people from all backgrounds. Lauren is very kind and treats staff and peers with dignity and respect. She consistently stays on top of her classes, and she advocates for herself when she needs help. Lauren is a student who always goes above and beyond and seeks ways to challenge herself. She not only excels academically, but is involved in extracurricular activities. She's a wonderful example of a CJHS student, and she exemplifies
what it means to be a Cub. Awesome. I do not see our student here. Xavier Richardson. Xavier Richardson was nominated by our principal, Mr. Chapman. And Mr. Chapman writes, it is with great honor that I nominate Xavier Richardson. for student of the month. Xavier is one of the nicest students that I have encountered in my career. He is very personable, easygoing, has a warm heart, and works extremely hard in school. For example, Xavier and I share a love for athletics, particularly basketball. He expressed early in the fall semester that he wanted to play on the basketball team at CHS, but there was only one problem. He needed to make up some credits to make that dream a reality. Xavier worked extremely hard all the way through Thanksgiving to earn as many credits as possible. I
am so proud to share that with the support of his teachers family and coach he exceeded the expectations set for him. Xavier is now flourishing both in the classroom and on the court. I can't wait to see what the next chapter brings for him. Xavier Richardson. SPEAKER 2 Dr. Ferguson. SPEAKER 3 CHS student of the month is Ari White. He was nominated by Mr. Glasgow and Mrs. Tucker. They say we're proud to recognize Ari White as student of the month. A straight A student, Ari consistently demonstrates excellence not only academically but also in character and leadership. What truly sets Ari apart is his exceptional manners and genuine kindness. Every day without fail, he thanks his teacher on the way out of class, a small gesture that speaks volumes about his respect, gratitude, and integrity. I
couldn't agree more that these moments reflect the kind of person he is at heart. Beyond the classroom, I've witnessed multiple acts of kindness from Ari. He is always considerate of others, willing to help, and treats everyone with respect. His kindness is not performative. It is sincere, consistent, and deeply rooted in who he is. Ari is a wonderful example of what it means to be a leader, someone who works hard, leads by example, and lifts others through simple but meaningful actions. We are incredibly proud to honor him as Student of the Month, and we look forward to seeing all the great things he will continue to accomplish. If you nominated one of the students we'd love to have you participate in a photo with them as well. All right moving on to the governing board outstanding
service awards Dr. Ntai Ferguson. So CHS staff of the month is actually Mr. Dave Glasgow. He was nominated by Mrs. Gonzalez. So we are proud to recognize Dave Glasgow as our teacher of the month. He consistently demonstrates an unwavering commitment to his students both inside and outside of the classroom. Mr. Glasgow is incredibly supportive and dependable, providing a steady presence that students can rely on each day. His consistency in expectations, instruction, and encouragement creates a positive learning environment where students feel valued, motivated, and empowered to succeed. Beyond the classroom, Mr. Glasgow goes above and beyond by regularly checking in. with his basketball players to ensure they are not only performing on the court but also achieving success in the classroom. He holds the students accountable while offering guidance and support reinforcing the importance of balancing
academics responsibility and teamwork. Through his dedication mentorship and genuine care for student success Mr. Glasgow exemplifies what it means to be an outstanding educator and role model. We are grateful for the positive impact he makes every day and are honored to recognize him as teacher of the month. All right Caps CVA. nominated Mrs. Michaela Kidd. She's nominated by her principal, Mr. Chapman. And he writes, it is with great pleasure that I recognize Michaela Kidd. Michaela is our Coolidge Virtual Academy teacher and is instrumental to our students' success. Michaela is responsible for a caseload of approximately 115 students, which I think that's gone up a little bit now. She meets with them weekly or more, monitors attendance, individual tutoring as needed, keeps up with course progress and completion, and builds positive and lasting relationships with students
and family. Michaela. is at the heart of what we do to put students in the best position possible for academic success. Recently, CVA went through the rigorous process of recertification as an Arizona online instruction school slash program. This process was spearheaded by our curriculum department and managed by our admin team, but it was Michaela that stole the show. Because she works directly with students, the panel wanted to hear directly from her. Let me share with you that Michaela did not disappoint. Every possible question that the panel asked, she delivered. At the conclusion of the interview, they each thanked her for participation and heartfelt answers. The panel was totally impressed with her, and so are we. CVA is blessed to have Michaela Kidd in our Coolidge family. Michaela Kidd. Dr. Dix. Coolidge Junior High would like
to recognize Maddie Tucker. So I had to start off with Maddie is amazing. She truly, truly is. She is kind and she is patient with the students that she works with, and she truly goes above and beyond to make sure they feel seen and heard. Maddie and two awesome students stole the show at the Winter Dance Recital. If you noticed them, they rocked the show. They were absolutely awesome. This act of kindness shows the truly special person that Maddie is and her ability to spread joy and love to her students. In the classroom, Maddie is focused, patient, and encouraging her students to feel safe and to learn and grow at their own pace. We are so lucky to have her on our Cubs team. Thank you. You know, also, I think... I got it. I
got it. You know also I think we need to thank Mr. Glasgow for the outstanding season so far and for taking time to come here. I'm surprised. And moving on to the school board appreciation month recognition presented by Superintendent Hodge. So January is always National School Board Appreciation Month and I just have a little something that I'd like to read to you about our school board. So tonight we want to take a moment to recognize and sincerely thank our governing board members. Serving on a school board is often a thankless role. Long meetings tough decisions lots of reading and very few people stopping you at the grocery store to say thank you for all the policy revisions. But our board shows up anyway prepared thoughtful committed in doing what's best for our students staff and
community. Victoria Quintero is completing her first year on the board and is our newest member. She brings a fresh perspective as a district alumna a parent and a community member which means she understands our schools from every angle. She also asks great questions that remind us have we thought about how this feels for families. We're grateful for her energy and insight as she continues on this journey with us. Thank you. Mr. George Arredondo, he's served on us for three years now, right? And brings a strong military background with a focus in IT and has a level of expertise in that area, which means when technology comes up, he's sometimes three steps ahead of the rest of us. George is known for asking the hard questions. The ones that make us pause think and sometimes go
back and double check our work. That level of accountability makes us better and we appreciate it. Thank you George. Mrs. Gillespie I feel like I have to call you Mrs. Gillespie like in this format. Ms. Gillespie has served for many years and I don't know exactly how many Chris do you know. A while. It's double digits. Double digits and is a former educator which shows in everything she does. She brings kindness, thoughtfulness, and a deep understanding of what decisions look like at the classroom level. Chris consistently reminds us to lead with empathy and care and her steady presence is felt in every conversation. Thank you, Chris. Our newly elected again Vice President Linda Heath Mrs. Heath also a former teacher has served for many years and brings a wealth of knowledge in curriculum and reading
practices. When instructional decisions are discussed Linda's helps ground the conversation and what truly benefits students. Her expertise and dedication to literacy strengthens our work in very meaningful ways. Thank you Linda. And our president Michael Flores the second who has served for 14 years and now six years as president brings a strong understanding of the needs of our youth deep ties to the community and a genuine passion for the district. Michael is a consistent advocate and a positive promoter of our schools always highlighting the good work happening across the district and reminding us of who we serve. So thank you Michael. And so to our governing board I just want to thank you for your time your leadership your thoughtful questions your differing perspectives and your shared commitment to do doing what is right for students
even when it's hard. We appreciate you not just this month but every day. So thank you. And there's just a small token of our appreciation for you. You better run. All right. Moving on the consent agenda. Mr. President, I move that we approve the consent as presented. Second. Motion's been made by Board Member Arredondo, seconded by Board Member Quintero. All those in favor? Yes. Yes. Motion passes by all. All right, moving on to other governing board and or superintendents report and update. Yeah, that is it. Yeah, quick meeting tonight. I just have a few things to share with you. I know you heard a little bit about our district regional qualifier spelling bee that will be happening on Tuesday, January 27th. at 5 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. And so we'll have, this will
be the first time where we have three schools competing, both elementary schools and our junior high have submitted, we have five students from each school that have qualified for the spelling bee. And so we will have students that will then qualify to go to the county bee, is that correct? I don't know if you've noticed, but we have started the field house construction over there. They are moving earth and... Things are on track as far as we know even with the rain you know it never fails when you start a construction project you get rain. So we do have our next level of benchmark testing for our schools next week and so we'll be able to share some data with you in the coming weeks on that. We're also working on projections for next year.
I know you know in the news you've heard a lot about school districts either closing schools or reducing staff and that kind of thing. You know we're not. We're not in a different situation than anybody else. But I feel like we've been conservative in our budgeting and that is a testament to you all and to our director of business services, Alyssa Garrett, along with our cabinet team on making some decisions, sometimes hard decisions on budgeting and that kind of thing. So we're hopefully we don't have to reduce staff, but we are looking at our FTEs and students and if anything, we would reduce by attrition, if anything else. And lastly, we do have a holiday coming up on Monday. And I know it's Civil Rights Day and the honoring of Dr. King, but I will
tell you it's another very, very special day because the Indiana Hoosiers are gone to the national championship game. And so all of you need to be watching and shouting, who, who, Hoosiers. My husband will love this if I tell him I did that. So anyway, that's all I have for you tonight. It is in the minutes. I will share with him. He said he was coming, but he was going to have to sit this one out. Mr. President, I had the privilege to attend the Arizona School Board Association meetings, the conference last month and talked to three things that I. outline with the superintendent, but I'll just kind of Chris Regis. Let everybody know here's a I went to the AIA presentation about the athletic stuff and they're talking about stats and what other What
the referees do I learned a few things about their? Questionnaires, so looking for a follow-up on that also They talked about artificial intelligence and privacy aspects of how schools are applying at and utilizing that Wickenburg superintendent as well as NAU had a Provided a presentation about that. So just want to make sure we're keeping up with the trends and impact of AI in our schools as well Just a reminder emphasis that they one of the conference Breakouts I went to the school board policies and procedures Two aspects of that is making sure we're allowing opportunities for everybody to excel, improve, as well as being able, whether it's an employee or student, you know, those things that due process, again, employees and students, how that impacts, as well as parents, of how anything adversarial or positive
or negative, that due process is provided out there. Talking to peers within that conference, everybody's concerned about the budget, what the federal impacts, how much that's gonna impact them, especially the rural areas like ours. There was concerns of that. So we all have a shared common support of our peers of looking at things together. So that was interesting. The ESA aspect as well, how students that are ESA. their role or participation in sports there. So I think our policies are sound there compared to other districts. And last but not least, appreciate the statistics on the data that you provided about the dribbles as well as the enrollment trends and all that. That's very informative there. And again, appreciate you and your staff for all you guys have done and look forward to a new year
going at it again. Thank you. Anybody else? That was good food. At the conference. All right, do I hear a motion to adjourn? Motion to adjourn. Second. Motion's been made and seconded by Redondo. Motion's been made by Board Member Quinteto. All those in favor? Yes. Yes. Motion passes by all. Everyone have a good night.
