008will Thrive and that is uh in the spirit of our partnership the work we have done together has provided many opportunities so thousands have taken part of our uh in our College and Career access pathways um this provides free college courses on our high school campuses and those enrolled um and continue to increase enrollment so um we've realized this since we've been together we also have thousands more who have enrolled and received a CTE College Career Technical credit through exam courses so they're receiving that and finally after graduations thousands of our students have attended and continued to attend our College Community College to the promise program and I can say um that I'm a proud parent of a student who attends San Diego Mesa college and um you know I want to encourage us to
009continue to stay steadfast for children like Daniel Jackson uh continue to stay steadfast in the vision and the mission because our students who come through San Diego Unified and go through the Community College one day they grow up and they become superintendents like myself so I am a product of what you are all doing thank you very much so I want to conclude by saying thank you to all of our board members all of the organizations that have come together and our staff um at Seneca unified and our community college staff are making this evening possible thank you for your continued commitment in this partnership um I believe I'm going to turn it back over to you president thank you thank you Dr Jackson for those lovely words I would now like to invite Dr

011forward superintendent Jackson and I find ourselves at the head of two institutions that are poised for transformation we are proud of the work that we've already done we are immensely proud of the outcomes you will see tonight we are proud of the San Diego promise which raises funds that otherwise could not have afforded many of our students to attend college for free here in the city of San Diego we have raised nearly 2.7 million dollars since the start of this program to provide free two-year tuition with textbooks to graduates of San Diego Unified School District the San Diego Community College District is in a period of transition we have just had our second Baccalaureate approved by the state city College's cyber defense and analysis program which will begin enrolling students next fall the strong Workforce
012initiative is helping students to seamlessly transition between organizations including Pathways to non-credit starting this summer Career Technical education and a focus on our students academic and career goals remains our top priority I look forward to the work that my colleague superintendent Jackson and I will do to oversee as a result of tonight's discussion and thank you again for hosting thank you so much Dr Cortez uh the next section is public testimony but last time I checked we did not have any so okay we're going to move on um so next is this year's status report on joint goals so we're going to have Dr Roberson and Dr tupam uh please provide that joint report please play the presentation thank you oops all right well good evening everyone and thank you for joining us today thank
013you trustees and thank you superintendent Jackson and Chancellor Cortez it is our pleasure and honor to be here tonight to share some of the work that has happened since last year as a gentle reminder we are starting with the review of our overarch goals the new goals that were established last year and reminding us of what the work is and what the work that we're going to be presenting tonight with that being said the joint board goals have four are overarching goals goal number one is College and Career readiness uh two is strategic enrollment management and marketing goal three is managing in an endemic world and goal four is legislation alignment fundraising and collaborative grants with that being said I wanted to thank you for these very ambitious goals and you will see that we
014will be talking about some of the areas but also making note of some of the places that we still have work to do and just a reminder of our joint commitments for both of our goals or for both of our boards is across all joint board goals ensure a commitment to equity and data informed practices and a focus on joint partnership efforts on increasing the success of Latin black Latin X indigenous dreamers and lgbtq plus students just a small note you will notice that throughout this presentation when it comes to the latinx terminology we'll be interchanging San Diego unified uses Hispanic students San Diego Community College District we've been using latinx but our researchers are now transitioning to Latin a which is a more gender neutral um thank you and terminology so we will be
015interchanging those and if there are any questions or comments regarding those terminologies please let know let us know and we'll adjust them accordingly thank you so again as a reminder this slide was used last year but this is again a reminder of our commitment of our programs we start at a very early age early commitment to college we work with our parents through student Outreach and parent Outreach we have new programs that have been brought forward this year and I'd like to point out a couple of them that we're very proud that have started this year and one of them the first one is the uh San Diego Pride youth leadership academy that happened in the fall we also just participated in San Diego unified's powwow this past weekend and also we just started with
016Morse High School being the first school the San Diego Community College District Roadshow and what that is is a mini college fair at each one of your high schools led by our Outreach Liaisons and departments from each of our four colleges and and bringing the services to your high schools the first one was we had an attendance of over 400 students and parents so we're very proud of that but that is just to demonstrate some of the programming that we're doing and we're listening to the community and to the needs of our students the parents and the families and now I'm going to transition to my partner here Jen thank you good evening everyone um as Vice Chancellor Topham reminded us as a joint board last year we set these goals and so I have
017the privilege of reminding us what those goals are and speaking to the objectives in each of the goals the goals that I'm presenting to you this evening are tied throughout the presentation and then the data is also interwoven with each of these goals so the first goal really orients us around college career Civic Global Life Readiness and so there are objectives within that goal and it's important to note that while they're not listed here I want to lift that it really pertains to College and Career Readiness so at the high school level we have the College and Career Readiness indicator that's associated with our our California dashboard and so we actively monitor that and respond to it accordingly the other thing that we really focus on in this goal is student leadership we are really
018listening to our students and hearing their voices and responding and and to their needs and and the supports that they need and then finally we are committed to early uh College and Career Readiness and so we'll be speaking about that goal as it pertains to that the next school that we have is strategic enrollment management and marketing and this the objectives in this goal really pertain to the use of data and using data to drive our moves as we work together jointly throughout this process we really want to focus on ensuring there is Equitable access and there's outcomes that are associated with that and so we hold ourselves accountable to each of those data subsets and outcomes and if we are not yet delivering on the outcomes we are striving every day to to make
019that happen and then goal number three is managing in the endemic world this goal in itself will be uh taking action will be asking the boards to take action on later on this evening and we'll narrate that uh we'll narrate the why but the objectives in this goal really tie into we want to collaborate on uh our responsiveness to our students supporting our students and taking a a tiered approach to that in addition we really want to strive to ensure that our students belong and they have a sense of belonging and they're thriving both at the high school campus and on the college campus and so we really are taking a look at that and then finally in goal three there was an objective there where our board leadership would connect on covid-19 policies and
020procedures which we've done a great job on and we'll talk about later on and then finally goal four this really pertains to legislation alignment fundraising and our collaborative uh efforts with one another so we um the objectives in this goal really pertain to our alignment of lcap and then the strategic planning by the Community College boards our connection to the San Diego San Diego city council and the Metro collaboration and then as well as our free college for all opportunities and so throughout our presentation this evening you'll be hearing how our data and our work is tied to each of these schools and then now I'm going to turn it back to Susan who will take you through how we hold ourselves accountable and so in each of your packets you should have received our
021scorecard report card which is a new initiative and I'd like to thank our Board of Trustees for during our last meeting bringing this up and so what we're trying to do here is really to demonstrate the the key performance indicators in which at this moment we're holding us ourselves accountable for and also to demonstrate over the years growth areas of improvement or mixed progress so you'll see um on your reports we've got the green thumbs up for positive progress mix progress is the arrows and then the red thumbs down are the challenges right so at currently we have 11 indicators um showing us the information the areas that we have chosen initially to follow and to provide data on a yearly basis are our promise program which will include head count and outcomes right so
022how many access and how they're performing in the program concurrent enrollment which will show your head count which means our students served and outcomes Student Success same with CT articulation credit by exam it will not only include the head count and outcomes but also subsequent outcomes Student Success after participation in the program and moving into into one of our four colleges CCAP headcount access opportunities to participate in how we're doing there are we providing that access to all our students to participate in this in in those courses outcomes and subsequent um outcomes in the in that program so if we move to the next to the first slide which is the promise program I am pleased to report that we have seen um an increase of substantial increase and we've outdone ourselves in providing access
023to students post uh pre-pandemic numbers so this year we're looking at 1076 which means we've done well so you've got your thumbs up there our outcomes though are um mixed right so our students have our promise students have a higher completion success and retention than our non-promise students however Equity gaps still remain in those program and we need to continue to address those and work diligently in addressing those issues so Equity gaps persist for a black and Latin a students in course retention success and it's similar to Prior cohort years while the promise student retention is higher than those for non-promise only 62 percent of the cohort six students have completed the promise program again we're spending some time with our researchers and our programs at each of our colleges really trying to understand what
024are the barriers that we may have advertently or inadvertently put up for our students and why is it hard for to for them to remain one of them that we recognize is the unit load for our students not only our promise students but across the board being a full-time student is always very hard for our students so understanding what their needs are basic needs tutoring course completion and really understanding how we can address those uh our next slide is on concurrent enrollment head count for fall 20 22 we're still Gathering that data but it seems like we will see an increase in concurrent enrollment which is also something very positive and the outcomes there uh 86 percent of concurrent enrollment students across the credit colleges were successful and so you have your percentage there across
025the credit colleges and students from the class of 2021 earned it an average of seven units through concurrent enrollment so that is something positive in this actually another thing that we need to continue working is providing more opportunities and Jen and I were just talking about uh some place where we actually feel that we'll be able to hopefully by next year's show an increase in those numbers of concurrent enrollments across our our programs the next is our CTE articulation credit by exam when you look at our head count we're doing very well there the number of students receiving CB credit has almost doubled over last year so that is something positive outcomes uh mixed and subsequent outcomes mixed also so 95 percent of grade eligible students earn college credit in 2122 up more than 20
026percent again are disproportionately impacted students we're not seeing the same kind of increase across the board so what does that mean that means better communication on both of our from both of our our constituencies right through our colleges and through the high schools reaching those students and making sure that the messaging is correct right sometimes people don't think that they don't belong there well ensuring that everybody is welcome and that there's an opportunity there for for all of our students and then subsequent and then CCAP um and the and for the first time we were able to provide um data just for San Diego unified usually we provide all of our data but this one is specifically for San Diego unified c-cap once again we've seen an increase in the number of students participating in
027this program but once again our disproportionately impacted and that one is actually um a thumbs down because there has uh been a decrease for our uh African-American and our black and brown students so we need to really do a better job of communicating again and so exploring ways additional ways then that what we're doing right now and what's not working and really understanding why our students are not taken advantage of this program that's readily available yes College and Career access Pathways thank you I'm so used to saying sick I'm like uh you caught me off guard these are the dual enrollment courses that we're offering at the high school campuses yes so concurrent enrollment are those students that come the high school students that come to our colleges and take the courses and the CCAP
028are the ones or the art courses that we offer at your high school campuses just for folks you know legislation was passed in the last five or six years that really encourages the building out of these course offerings and has created new requirements for us offering courses in the high schools but we've seen a dramatic increase in high school students taking Community College courses that are taught by our faculty who are often your faculty who work through our College teaching these courses and one of the reasons why we've also seen an increase there is that we've both teams at unified and San Diego Community College District we've spent a lot of time on operationalizing this and the process and breaking down the barriers of application and moving through our process to ensure that that it's
029more seamless for students to move into our programs I'm excellent outcomes also 1047 students who graduated in 2022 from your programs and from your high schools completed nine plus dual enrollment units while um while in high school again African-American and our latinx students have slightly lower success rates and have earned fewer CCAP units than other groups and subsequent outcomes which means after they've moved forward from call from high school their first year as a college student at City Mesa Miramar compared to those without the early credit former CCAP are more successful 77 percent versus the 69 percent and earn more units while in their first year 16.8 units versus 11.3 and are also more likely to persist to a second year of college 66 percent versus the 50 percent and are also more likely to
030earn a degree or a TR or transfer to a four-year institution so there you can see the huge number it's not very huge but comparatively right the 11 versus the three percent and in the bottom you have the broken down by the different demographics demographics and so now we once again transition um Jeff and Sarah we're going to bring up our director of College and Career Technical education Sarah vyama who will speak about our next School [Applause] oh here we go thank you I'm going to go ahead and give us some additional detail on our goal one through our goal one we remain jointly committed to college career and Civic and Global Life Readiness for students the College and Career indicator on the California school dashboard shows how well districts and schools are preparing high
031school students for Success after graduation whether that be a post-secondary education pursuing a career or both the College and Career Readiness indicator consists of both College and Career Readiness measures the career in college readiness measures include completing rigorous coursework and engaging in learning experiences that are designed to prepare students for their future through the joint partnership we are focused on the student opportunity to become College and Career ready through earning early college credit this can be through our Middle College Programs such as our East Village Middle College High School through the CCAP partnership such as the College and Career access Pathways which Dr Cortez just explained we also have an accelerated college program agreement at Mesa college and then our concurrent students who are taking college courses sometimes on their own and sometimes as part
032of a planned program that the school may have and then the CTE articulation courses that are articulated that students can earn credit by exam this year we also began holding for the first time a college a career in college Symposium with a focus on giving students the opportunity to come together and receive information Network learn about resources and opportunities that they have in collaboration with our post-secondary partners to become College and Career ready I'll share a little bit more about that in a little bit here's here so multiple measures are used to report if students are prepared on the College and Career Readiness indicator uh with two semesters of college credit a student is actually recognized as prepared on that indicator with one semester of college credit combined with an additional measure uh for example
033being a through G meaning the a through G requirements or completing a CTE pathway the student is prepared this data represents our combined graduates from the 2021 cohort in the combined graduation rate and by sub student subgroup who completed either an academic or CTE subject college credit course with the grade of C or better this data gives us our Focus for our collaborative work on increasing access and outcomes for our early college credit earners so specifically we can see that two semesters of college credit was earned by 33 percent of those graduates and one semester of college credit was earned by 42 percent of those call of those graduates high school graduates and we also have the data by subgroup and this data has informed our work around increasing awareness and intentional Outreach to these
034subgroups so that we can improve the numbers of students that are earning college credit throughout their 9 through 12 high school years as well as student supports and and we'll talk about that yeah on the next slide here this data is actually reported directly from the San Diego Community College District so this is enrollment data from San Diego Community College District of our students and the graduation year that they reported and here we can see that there has been growth over the over years so the First Column represents 2019 through 2021 and we can see unduplicated count of students on the left showing that 3530 students earned college credit which was 56.7 percent of the graduates uh and then those who earned it through college career access pathway program and those who earned it through
035CTE credit by exam students may be in more than one program so the sum will exceed the total of the unduplicated students our goal is to continue this focus on increasing the number of students that are earning college credit during their high school years the next slide is going to expand on the CTE college credit earned and give some additional data this has been a focus of the work as well and we can see we have been working to ensure that every CTE pathway that is offered at the high schools has an opportunity for students to earn early college credit and increasing opportunities at each school as well so we've added courses that qualify for articulation and you can see that through the number of enrollments so in 2000 2021 there were 5528 enrollments compared
036to 2 2021-22 which had an increase of 8 375 enrollments who actually had access to a course that was articulated a 51 increase we also look at the percentage we also look at the percentage earning the credit and so we see that that percentage has remained consistent so we went from 26 to 31 of the students enrolled and then 36 percent of the students enrolled but because there was a lot higher enrollment that equaled about 3 000 a little over three thousand enrollments earning uh college credit through this program which was actually uh quite a large increase about 78 increase I want to just add some key interventions uh collaboratively that we have implemented to support the growth of the program but also uh the goal to increase our students access and outcomes in the
037program so I want to highlight a few of these uh starting with collaborative School site planning so our College partners and our School site principals and counselor uh see cat College liaison are involved and we have increased the number of opportunities for them to collaborate together and begin to plan what programs they may want to offer at their school thinking about student interest so maybe it's courses aligned to a program students are already involved in in their high school or maybe it's a program that is not currently offered at the high school and we're going to see some examples of these programs when the colleges share some details around those programs also increasing understanding of certificate and degree alignment and encouraging our schools to offer courses that directly lead to certificates and giving students the
038opportunity to work on that certificate while they're in high school begin that work sharing the data so really giving data presentations and review as schools are beginning to think about how will they address uh how are they going to increase access for certain groups of students or what their focus as a School site will be is bringing that data to them as well every high school has a designated counselor liaison who is that contact person for faculty and also for the college we also held this year a counselor conference for all counselors and we were able to share the data uh San Diego Community College District actually came and presented the data to our counselors at that conference as well and then just want to mention a few things around student supports so our district
039CTE counselors have gone to high schools to support the schools with Outreach as well College Outreach to support students in the enrollment process and are actually on campus helping students through that process as well as a quite extensive enrollment monitoring so that we know what students need to do to complete in order to be enrolled in a course and then the parent student orientation that is held for all students that are in our CCAP programs and this includes not only policies and important information that our parents and students need to be aware of but also how to support students to be successful in college courses and how to access supports that may be needed both on the college campus or at their high schools the uh the Korean College Symposium was held this year with
040200 students that came together uh we piloted this with Claremont High School Hoover High School Point Loma and Mira Mesa High School the students had a keynote speaker that shared four skills and steps to a successful career our community college Partners were present we had a post-secondary panel and we had a table fair so that students could actually begin to understand and think about what did College and Career mean to them what and begin to think about designing an intentional educational plan focused on College and Career Readiness and the results and feedback from the students were extremely positive all of them said that it was relevant to them they were satisfied with the event and came away with key takeaways to help inform their next steps or their future plans so we plan to expand
041this program in the next year and continue to offer to more students and and schools and we thank our partners for being there and being a part of that event as well so that students can meet them and learn about their programs as well so that concludes the goal one information and this is a focus on goal two uh and I'm just going to introduce it and then invite our colleges to come up and share some of the key things that they have been doing around this area so one of the key elements uh in goal two is increasing student and staff awareness of the early college credit opportunities that include both non-credit certificate opportunities and credit certificate post-secondary programs that can be that are offered through dual enrollment and concurrent enrollment data gives us
042evidence that students who do earn early college credit are more than twice as likely to complete two or more years of college also students who earn more than nine or more early college credit units are four times as likely to complete and former early college credit students in all ethnicities had higher completion rates than their peers who did not complete early college credits so we definitely see the benefit of giving students in this opportunity and having them begin college courses and earning college credit early so each College will now share key strategies for increasing student awareness through Outreach efforts and highlights of existing and future certificate program Focus areas I think oh I'd now like to introduce uh Dr Shakira Carter and our lead Outreach Valeria Ramirez uh who will be leading the next section
043[Applause] together good evening board members Chancellor Cortez and superintendent Jackson I am Dr Shakira Carter I serve as the vice president of student services at San Diego College of continuing education and we are happy to share some of our strategic Outreach strategies that we've employed over the course of the last year over the course of the last year as we've transitioned back to in-person Services the College of continuing education has worked strategically and intentionally to expand our Outreach presence throughout all San Diego Unified High Schools as the adult nine credit arm of the San Diego Community College District sdccce provides short-term Career Training that's at no cost to students our mission has been to ensure that all San Diego Unified High School students are exposed to and have a clear understanding of the various Career
044Technical education Pathways available at sdccce in addition to providing direct Outreach support to students we've worked alongside the high school leadership teams to eliminate the historical stigma connected to the non-credit CTE Pathways and to ensure that all at the high school counselors and teachers are well informed about the opportunities that are available to students Valeria will share with you some of the specific activities that we've engaged in over the course of the last year thank you [Music] good evening my name is again Valeria Ramirez acting Outreach coordinator for San Diego College of continuing education I am so excited to share the space today with Dr Carter and share with you a little bit about the work that we've been doing at our local high schools since the start of this school year we've served to
045date 11 high schools and Counting through various different programs one being our redefined success Workshop through our redefined success Workshop we start by having an honest conversation with our students of what is success and what does success look like we talk about success looking different for every person the trajectory of getting to that success looking different for every student in our room we talk about what is CSU what is uc's what is Community College what are private schools and then what is Career Technical education and how can that support their goals moving forward we also talk about college of continued education not being or option right not being like if you don't go this route if you don't go that route there's this other option no San Diego College of continuing education is very much
046an end option that students would regardless of what they choose to do after high school they can benefit from the support that we offer here and the programs available and so through our redefine success Workshop in addition to talking about what is success and what that could look like to a students we talk about being able to participate in free career exploration building that bridge to the workforce and or our sister colleges City Mesa and Miramar as well as offering connecting them with resources and services available like our basic needs program our immigrant support based program our black Student Success program to name a few a few of the schools that we've already offered our redefined success Workshop include Madison High School Kearney Mesa Mission Bay Point Loma Crawford Hoover and 20th to name a
047few and it so where are we starting the conversation in the classroom of San Diego College of continuing education and we find that some students are like eager to learn more and want to get started and so to be able to build up support that transition for our students we have established our adopted ambassador program this allows the high school to host an ambassador at their High School on a regular basis whether that be monthly bi-monthly every other month it could look a little bit different for every school to support with that transition we recognize that College of Contin education is a little bit different than the enrollment process is a little bit different for for than City Mason Miramar and can be a little bit intimidating because we offer so many avenues for our
048students and we want to be a part of that conversation and adopt an ambassador program allows us to do that currently we're stationed at Mira Mesa High School Adult Ed program and Crawford high school and looking to expand to other High schools we're culminating our our end of our year work here on May on May 10th we are going to be hosting our redefined success Pathways to Career um day where students will be able to come on campus and participate in a three breakout session and hear about all the programs and services that we have to offer and we find that when students get to visit the campus talk to the professors and see what exactly they're going to be doing in the classroom that just ignites the excitement and that's what we want to
049continue that momentum and get them connected and ready for when they graduate high school so thank you and now we're going to share the stage with Dr spratley to share more about our instructional Partnerships good evening esteemed board members colleagues and community members my name is Dr minus Bradley and I have the honor and the privilege to serve as the interim vice president of instructional services at the San Diego College of continuing education um today the College of continuing education would like to highlight our certified nurses assistant or CNA pathway partnership with sdusd we have an ongoing partnership with med tech Academy at San Diego high school during the 2223 Academic Year students at med tech High have enrolled and successfully completed three of our courses these courses are Healthcare careers personal care assistant and
050medical terminology these students are now ready to enroll in our summer CNA course starting on June 13th and ending on August 21st they will be taking the state license exam on August 24th at our Cesar Chavez campus to become licensed CNA and go get a job as a CNA in order to participate students must be at least 16 years old have received a satisfactory or high conduct grades and maintain a GPA of 2.5 we're also working towards a similar goal with the school of biomedical sciences and Technology at Kearney high school we hope to enroll students for the summer in the Healthcare careers and personal care assistant courses in the fall they will take the medical terminology course and the CNA course in the spring of 24. by the time the school year ends these
051students will be ready to take the licensing exam and work as a CNA in the summer of 24. our work with Kearney High School is still in the planning stages uh so some of the benefits of enrollment in these courses during High School first it introduces students to hike the health care field and allows them to explore to see if this is a good career fit for them for zero cost to them second they have a job that pays between 20 to 24 hours while still in high school or right after finishing High School third if a student is interested in continuing in this field they have a head start and have multiple Pathways to continue their education including advancing in the field of nursing by either entering the field of licensed vocational nursing or
052LVN program and then going to an RM program and stay with the community college and go to City College for their RN program and or a variety of other Healthcare careers nurses are in high demand and can work anywhere in the country even overseas they can work at the bedside teach or enter management careers aside from nursing students can go into any health care erratic career from physical therapy to lab technicians to an MD and a multiple of multiple other careers next you will hear from one of our high school students who successfully completed the three courses at San Diego High School's med tech Academy for a student testimonial we look forward to continuing and expanding our partnership with sdusd to give our students an opportunity to find the right career for them and to
053advance their economic well-being at no cost could you please play the videos this what advances right now I'm taking the medical terminology course I really like this class because it has a lot to do with what I want to do with my with my life and my future with my career I want to study something in the medical field and getting to know the the terminology associated with this field is a great way to start my career and I think it's really going to help me in the future and honestly I think any students that want to take this class should take it because it's giving students like me an opportunity to get to know the medical field before going full on into it and I think that it's a great opportunity for students like
054me who don't have all the resources that other students may have something like this is a great tool for us [Music] foreign next we would like to introduce our colleagues from City College [Applause] [Music] good afternoon Buenas my name is Clarissa Padilla and I'm the Outreach coordinator at San Diego City College San Diego City College Prides itself with being the College of social justice where students see themselves in the staff faculty administrators and executive leadership where they have programming tailored to their particular communities including our learning communities of emoja Puente hubu and soon to be Asian Pacific Islander we recognize the diverse experiences our students bring to San Diego City College and we strive to create a culture that shows them that they belong here and we know that that feeling of belonging does not
055start at city college it starts in partnership with you all in partnership with the high schools particular our feeder high schools in December of 2021 our leadership team met with the Lincoln High School leadership team in the midst of the pandemic to see how we could best serve Lincoln High School students and their principals agudelo and brown shared that many of their students wanted to go straight into the workforce or wanted to go into a trade program and it's in that moment that we realized we were not sharing strongly enough the certificate program options we have at San Diego City College and there we came up with the theme that trade school is college and it's accessible at San Diego City College with affordable options at that point we also decided to launch a partnership
056called Workforce Wednesdays now this partnership is program specific and is faculty driven so with the support of our vice president of instruction Tilly Chavez and our president Ricky Shabazz we launched this programming including all of the marketing pieces and t-shirts that were provided for every single staff member and teacher at Lincoln High School to amplify the college-going culture that we were trying to support on Wednesdays faculty come to Lincoln High School so these are specific and program program specific presentations so they are based solely on that particular area um recently we have had cosmetology nursing radio television film and design as well as digital journalism mental health work HVAC personal training Alcohol and Other Drug studies as well as graphic design what's great about this program is that students are able to directly interact with
057faculty members that are from San Diego City College at their high school campus and through these interactions and presentations and Hands-On demonstrations they're able to experience what it is like to be a college student and recognize that they belong at city college as a college student and that they have options in pursuing their certificates After High School and going straight into the work Workforce really what we want to do is meet the needs of our students and understand the needs are changing in this time and we want to be able to provide supports for them so they can have a living wage these Partnerships have also sparked additional conversations around CCAP classes and increasing CCAP classes at the camp at the Lincoln High School as well as exploring those certificate Pathways so we hope to
058continue this partnership this is our year two of this Workforce Wednesday partnership and next year we're hoping to expand it to include field trips as well another really high impactful strategy that we've had at San Diego City College is our first of its kind signing days so these signing days were celebrations that happened at each single feeder high school and really the idea behind this was to celebrate students that are choosing to come to San Diego City College and recognize that this decision that they have made is a good decision and it's going to support their trajectory whether that be Career College associate's degree or transferring so we had our first ever signing days last spring at Lincoln Morse Hoover Crawford San Diego High O'Farrell and Gompers so the celebrations consisted of having a DJ
059come out during lunch custom made committed t-shirts they were given swag as you can see they were taking pictures our presidents and our leaderships came out as well to celebrate students students were given a 250 dollar signing bonus through our first ever signing days we come committed to 123 students and gave out a total of thirty thousand dollars for students that are just rewarding them for coming to San Diego City College we also um expanded this to EV every single student was invited to compete for our presidential scholarship which was given for the first time ever and 10 of these students were awarded two thousand five hundred dollars as well as a Macbook really the idea behind the signing days is to start a relationship with students at the high school level create a familiar
060face so that when they get to San Diego City College they have someone they have connected with they know that they have a contact person and they know where they can get any resources and already start that feeling of community and belonging that we mentioned earlier at the signing days our City College representation included our Outreach teams our administrators our Affinity groups including hubu and Puente as well as financial aid to clarify any FAFSA issues that we had we hope to increase our 2023 signing days to include our promise orientations dsps workshops and actual fall enrollment for all promise students we will also be connecting our learning communities of Puente hubu and emoja as well as our Asian American Pacific Islander Club um but what better way to show you guys the impact that signing
061day has had on students than for me to bring up more Salam and San Diego City College student Maximus gastellum [Applause] hi good afternoon I don't see a Dodgers hat today huh hey hey I learned I learned from the first medium okay good afternoon my name is Maximus Gastelum I'm a man it's it's a mix it's a mix St Louis right I'm a student at San Diego City College and and yeah I'm actually a product I'm a product from the signing day so I'ma just I'm just here to tell my story basically so keeping it real the first day I was in bed like I totally forgot about Signing Day so it was kind of like a domino effect and when I really look back at it like the decisions that I made or the
062decisions I could have not made I probably wouldn't be here today's you know sitting down and explain to you guys the the amazing experience that I've had at San Diego City College so it was kind of just from there the domino effect from there you know I went to the signing day um originally yeah I didn't really mind the 250 I was just like you know what I was like because to be honest I wasn't even going to go to college like it wasn't an option for me like for me it was just to go to Workforce it's just to work construction or whatever the opportunity may be so for me college was an option it wasn't even a door for me so City when it came to City they just came to my school
063so it showed that they really cared you know I didn't have to go looking for them they came looking for me so so for me that was also very special and then in addition to the to the signing day I also got that like Clarissa was mentioning um I was one of the 10 uh that won the presidential scholarship so not just oh thank you so not just uh not just for myself but also for my family it was also helpful for my family they didn't have to stress about nothing they didn't have to stress about you know taking out a loan or anything because I'm a first generation student so just seeing that and even also telling that like on my on my recommendations and and Etc it just it just really see the
064importance that they had just for myself and and including just the people around me so after signing day you know it was a it was I forgot the word oh the scholarship the scholarship banquet yeah I've been I've been messing up on that word but yeah the scholarship English so the scholarship like I said they also um they invited my family so for them it was just it was just something about bonding you know they know the school I'm at they know school where I'm going to in my education um they met they met Clarissa they made everybody else over there so so it was also a very a very nice opportunity that's the first time where I met the president and in my head you know I didn't even know it was him in
065the beginning I kind of like I remember the first time that I met him he said he said you made a good choice and I was still kind of iffy about college and I was like you know what I was like We'll see I just kind of just like we'll see and then he go up and he's like oh I'm the president of City College and I'm just like bruh I was like okay you know so so it was just kind of like you know who you meet and who stuff like that and then after that I had the amazing opportunity to be part of the Emoji program and to add on as well I'm also the emoja vice president um so I'm also doing that as well so back to everything it was just
066signing day for me Signing Day if it wasn't for signing day I wouldn't be here I wouldn't have that exposure um Clerk's also hired me for to being a student ambassador so I'm also a student ambassador at San Diego City College and I'm giving back to my community as well like she mentioned you know I'm a marsh alumni so I'm going back to Southeast I'm going every Fridays going back to Morris you just kind of you know presenting telling them that you know it is possible you know I was in the same seat as them I'm probably thinking the same thing as them as well you know like college isn't an option but you know I'm going there just kind of kind of preaching a that it is an option you know and it's a
067door that City wants to open for you you know it's not not forcing you anything it wants to open for you and and it's just those amazing experiences I can't sometimes I can't put it into words sometimes I am so I go home to my mom and I tell her like I love Sandy City like I love being here and every single time and I know one of the models and one of the things is that you belong here and I do belong there and I feel like you know I I truly believe in that everything happens for a reason and I and and me getting up that day was for a reason you know what I'm saying I'm telling you I just got off that bed and I just remembered that I had to
068go so yeah so it was something it was something and and yeah I don't know just thank you thank you to everybody thank you thank you to City you know for taking a chance on me you know taking a chance on me and yeah I mean and eternally grateful for everything that I've been I've been doing over that City College so thank you [Applause] oh the Blazer oh there's another story I so okay so since I'm in the Emoji Community as well um so I have I've also had these opportunities to go to these conferences and you know beautiful hotels that I've never even imagined of going like you know I mean so so I was going to these conferences and then we went to the ATM conference actually not too long ago March 1st
069like the first week of March and we brought these jackets I know you see in the picture over there I'm wearing a medal because we're actually the A2 man 2023 San Diego City College Champions so I also won that um you know adding on to a little extra you know what I'm saying um so yes I won that you know brought it home to San Diego um so and it was actually that is more meaningful to me because I went with with these guys and I told the guys I was with I was like this Championship means more to me because I did it with you and that was created by the the Brotherhood and stuff like that that city produces so I told them that like all that like it was such a Brotherhood
070moment it's such bonding and and the jackets itself it created like that identity like when we were there it was it was impactful we didn't just win the championship there but we were recognized by our Blazers as well so we're going there like oh is that City car is that City College we were like yeah like you know it says you know bright red that says so so yeah so it just created identity just being proud of like you know yeah this is us you know every time we're on the conference room you know I was losing somebody and I was like ah red blazer I was like and I just go on on saying hi to them so yeah all these opportunities all these beautiful pictures um that was the first time I met
071uh Dr Shabazz um give back to the community one of the rec centers you know those checks um being part of the student Forum um I remember my my first presentation at the Board of Trustees meeting on right there you know being part of Outreach and then also being part of a Mojo it's just been it's been life-changing it really is and I wouldn't have done this for for the signing day or for City it really haven't so I'm extremely I think thank you as you guys have heard Maximus really embodies the transition that we want all of our students to experience through our signing days that that sense of connection that sense of belonging and then just connecting them with all the student services and resources that are available to them so in addition
072to Maximus being in Emotion being the emoja vice president and being a part of the hubu Brotherhood he's also part of promise and he's also part of eops and he has such a strong connection not only with our Outreach team but with his uh faculty his instructors they all connect with him so well because they know that we have dedicated so much time and resources into him through these signing days and through really you know Maximus just has a lot of potential on his own and really through these other experiences he's really just Unleashed that he already had it within him and now he's really seeing himself as a scholar as a leader as a a role model he goes back to Morse every Friday to help students enroll and apply to San Diego City
073College so as you can see he's also our front man really for the college and so one thing that we do hope and we tease that we're going to create t-shirts and say that we hope that all students will maximize their potential at San Diego City College thank you and now we'll turn it over to our Mesa team good evening joint boards thank you so much for having us here and giving us an opportunity to speak my name is Trina Larson I am the acting Outreach coordinator for Mesa College I've been in this position for six weeks and I'm speaking before the joint board and I followed Maximus this is going up onto some kind of board in my house and I'm hearing everything that they're doing the other colleges and frankly I'm not sure
074all of what we do I know what we do in six weeks and it's quite a lot uh but anyway I uh I'm sending a shout out to uh everyone here for outreach in the district so of course mesa's Outreach Works to strengthen our K-12 to post-secondary pathway that's our role and we do this at a couple levels at the leadership level and at the student level so for example every year we hold a principles Roundtable where The Joint leaders from both districts get together and collaborate frame the year and share ideas in addition as you'll hear later we meet individually with our feeder high schools to develop programs that will benefit students transition to college notably for students we hold an annual jump start which is a vibrant and festive event in the spring
075that allows students to come through and attend workshops and participate in a resource fair and entertainment and gain scholarships and this is for students who know they're coming to Mesa who know they're going to college or who have no idea whatsoever if college is for them this is an event in which we encourage families to come we just held it two weeks ago and it was raining cats and dogs but the whole environment was so warm in addition to these larger scale efforts that we do we connect with students on individual levels for example through our Outreach ambassadors and through our relationships with high school counselors who have relationships with these students um this path from high school to college for Mesa is grounded in equity and care that we love to share with high
076school students and help them experience when they come as prospective students to Mesa more than anything just in the few weeks that I've worked here um it's most important to me so that that students and counselors and leaders know who we are to help them make an informed choice and who we are is both in HSI and a pz designated Institution we have Affinity spaces on our campus for Latin a lgbtq plus dreamers and for students formerly in Foster youth you bring prospective students to these spaces and we let them know there is a place for them with us we have thriving learning communities from API black and Latin a perspectives and we proudly share this information with students who come to see us we introduce them to our Affiliated folks and we invite them
077to connect one component of our new anapisi Grant is more focused Outreach to high school students from an API perspective and we've recently requested disaggregated data from high school graduating high school students so that we can reach out to them before they even um arrive at Mesa then we demonstrate care to our prospective students as whole people um with the same kind of intensity and tension our prospective high school students learn about or visit our stand our basic Resource Center where students can get a hot meal food and clothing uh professional clothing they can have emergency services and counseling mental health is uh increasing issue for our students and so to that we are developing a more and more robust Mental Health both one-on-one and in groups through our student health services that we talk
078to students about in all we're developing programs with our prospective students in mind and Gene is going to tell us a little more about that uh good evening I'm Linda Hensley for the for the day um this is gonna fall I'll just hold it um Linda is sick today so I am here in her place um I am the fairly new CCAP coordinator at Mesa college and so I'm here to speak about and you've heard a lot of wonderful things from our um from our other sister colleges that I've had that have the CCAP program as well again um uh Heist are teachers from Mesa College go to the high school sites and are teaching or courses for students to improve the process that we have over in the fall we met with each of
079the high schools to try to build Pathways from each individual High School to Mesa college so that we could try to intentionally offer courses that would meet the needs of their students because we know that all of the high schools in San Diego have slightly different demographics this led to a lot of brainstorming and right now we're in the process of setting up the schedule for the 23-24 year and I can say that there is a lot of Buzz around opportunities for the future based on those meetings that we had in the fall in all of those cases we tried to meet our joint goals of doing what's best for each student for students at each of the individual sites um one of the main goals we talked about in those meetings are trying to
080help our students in high school meet these core general education requirements that they would need to transfer to a Cal State University but they're also a prom courses that are transferable to a UC school or other colleges as well and I can say that for the 23-24 school year most of our high schools have at least three of these offerings if not more which gives students the opportunity to earn almost all of these courses before they even graduate from high school we have lots of data showing that students who successfully complete High School College High School courses in college have a have a much higher chance of transferring ultimately to a university once they go through Mesa college so we're trying to strengthen those pathways even though some students don't have the capacity within their
081courses to take all of these during High School even just having two or three of them under their belt is a really good jump start on their college careers um next we are super excited to be piloting in the fall a program at Point Loma High School which is a certificate in information Communications and Technology foundations it's a four course program which includes two computer science courses a web development course and a multimedia course and from the initial numbers we have a huge number of students it seems it's going to be a very popular popular program Linda told me that I had to give a big shout out to principal Lowry from Point Loma because the work that's being done there to really promote the program including printing up posters having them posted around the
082school to just generate interest has really paid off for this for this moving forward another pathway that we are focused on and I think the folks from San Diego Community College District have probably heard about the tutor to teacher pipeline that Mark manasse is heading up at Mesa College um we know that there are a lot of students that want to be teachers but don't really understand what that involves and some of that note some of them know that even in their high school years and so what we're trying to do is create a pathway that not just goes from Mesa to University but starting in the high schools the program that we've created gives the students the opportunity to take the courses they need to become tutors while they're still in high school so
083that when they transfer to Mesa College they have the opportunity to have a job on campus which is one of the best things because it fits in nicely with their course schedule they can go to class run over to the library tutor for a little bit and when I'm not the CCAP coordinator my main job is being a math professor and I know that when I talk about math I get better at it but when my students talk about math they get better at it so being a tutor is one of the strongest ways that we can encourage folks to move on to become teachers and we'd like to show a video from a student before you start the video I want to just give a little background about it the student's name is Alexa
084Huerta from Hoover High School and this is a student who is currently in this program studying to be a tutor hope that she's a senior so hopefully she'll be coming to Mesa to be a tutor next year and then eventually transfer one of the things in the video that she references quite a bit is ELD which is a term for students who are enrolled in an English development course so I just wanted to make that clear can you play the video please [Music] I've been told by several teachers that there's a big number of students that now are graduating because of our support because we're there every day like we understand them I think being a student there in the classroom with them I think it kind of gives us this sort of connection so
085they don't feel as judged it's helped them as students get academically better and socially better as well as us as tutors I used to be this very shy person I did not like socializing or talking to people and now like I'm doing this I'm at an interview like I get placed in classes I'm so out of my old self like my old Shell and I've been told that I'm seen as a different person now I'm the co-coordinator of our education committee here at school and I speak out to our tutors and our students and I feel like that's so impactful them me as well as other students here at Hoover that they see themselves but like represented in another way I am Mexican um a lot of our ELD students are Mexican as well and
086it kind of helps them see that they could like be brought up to some of that a lot of our tutors were actually ELD students as well so it kind of gives them that mirrored image that what they could build up to be because I know a lot of them don't have like the courage or the motivation to bring themselves up because they feel like slow down here but with our help they really bring themselves up to be tutors and future teachers like I want to be thank you and we'll pass it on to our colleagues at city college or sorry Miramar the other one all right um hello everybody hello everyone uh good evening my name is Chantal Hernandez and I'm the acting Outreach coordinator at Miramar College and today I wanted to actually
087highlight uh one of our Discover series events I don't know if that's me the feedback today I wanted to talk about the Discover series and before actually jumping into that I wanted us to you know take a pause and think about maybe a field trip that really impacted you or maybe the first memory of somebody talking about college to you uh you know maybe it was an individual maybe it was an event maybe it was an activity maybe it was a family member or a close friend and the reason I I said you know let's pause and really think about that is because with the Discover series what we hope is that for those students that attend these events we are part of that memory uh whether it is that it's the first time they're
088hearing about college whether they've heard about college but they're still trying to figure out what's my next step uh we hope that we are a part of that now uh for the Discover Series this uh semester uh we have the Discover your passion and the Discover your drive both events focus on different programs so the Discover your passion uh focuses on programs such as child development entrepreneurship business paralegal and finance uh and the Discover your drive focuses on Aviation automotive diesel and uh the way that this uh began was uh you know before the pandemic uh this began as an intent for students to increase that awareness of these programs and perhaps also you know maybe a student that has already a class has some type of pathway some type of connection in high school
089how do they make that connection to after they graduate and so since then it has definitely grown and I'll talk about how it has grown in terms of the amount of programs and the amount of students that we have connected with but before actually you know jumping into you know what it looked like this year I do have two videos that I wanted to uh include to kind of give you a glimpse as to what we've done in the past these are actually used to promote and give students families uh the the schools a glimpse as to what it was that maybe they signed up for what it is that they're going to of course experience so this first one is the Discover your passion so if you can get that started [Music] we're here
090today at Miramar College we've invited 75 students from San Diego Unified and they're here to learn about careers in Early Education Child Development programs like this in the class itself really broadens my knowledge so it was really helpful this event is really Workforce preparation it's intended to give them exposure to the careers in Early Education and also what they can do with their degree after they graduate from Miramar College [Music] so that was the Discover your passion and then the next video is actually the one right next to it's going to be the Discover your drive which again it provides a glimpse as to uh what we've done and again like a glimpse as to you know a student's experience in each of the rotations [Music] today is our Discover your drive event we put
091this event together for San Diego unified students throughout the day the students are going through demonstrations in the auto Aviation and Diesel Labs they're learning about the various certificates and degrees we offer I'm just always like working on cars I always worked with my dad out in the garage and stuff since I was a little kid and it was just something that always interested me I felt like it was a great path for me to get into we want them to know that programs offered at community colleges offer a unique Hands-On opportunity for a student to get the workforce preparation they need and that's something that we're really proud of at Miramar College [Music] so that gives you at least like the visual of what students would walk into and right now we're actually in
092the works of creating another video with the um the the different clips the different rotations that students were involved in this year as well and I'll talk a little bit about one like that next step would be um actually can we actually I have the clicker I forgot it went too far okay um and so uh what it has actually it continues evolving uh there was a positive course during the pandemic uh but we came back and we were ready uh with again increasing that awareness um and we actually increased the number of participating programs as well um but discover your passion only included the Child Development before the pandemic and it actually increased to include an entrepreneurship Finance some of the other programs that I had mentioned so that allowed more awareness more students
093to actually become involved but through you know faculty student and peer engagement and the Hands-On experiences and activities throughout the day through the different rotations that students went through students were able to hopefully walk away with that Miramar experience like I mentioned before we want them to think of that early memory of you know Miramar College or maybe College in general to be something meaningful be something impactful we also had students speakers as well and employer networking during lunch because each step of the way whether it's that first memory whether it's them envisioning themselves in the classroom we want them to also think of well what would that future look like as well land being that job it's maybe talking to an employee for the very first time and uh you know through the collaboration
094uh LED through the Dean's office of Business technical careers and Workforce initiatives btcwi for short and of course the collaboration with Career Services our office and the San Diego unified College Career and Technical education uh you know we were able to make this these events possible without the collaboration especially San Diego unified's collaboration uh you know this of course would not have been possible being able to reach as many students as we did and actually be able to provide the Hands-On experiences for each of these events to discover your drive of course there's a lot of Hands-On experiences but just to give you a glimpse as to something for the Discover your passion it was repair illegal students that maybe were taking maybe a pathway or a class related to that they discussed legal issues
095but through the lens of Humpty Dumpty Sleeping Beauty if it was real what were some legal issues tied to that right so again it's it's that personal connection how do we make it something where students understand and maybe have a personal uh you know connection to that and looking into the future I mean this is you know only the beginning uh we hope that this does become a Miramar tradition and you think uh discover series and you automatically think of Miramar College uh but between both of the Discover series there's over 300 students uh from 9th through 12th grade we did not want to exclude the students that were non-uh seniors because again that first maybe memory or maybe that first memory that was actually impactful or positive of college we don't want to leave
096anyone out so the seniors of course they are on their way but definitely those that are not seniors who wanted to be a part of that path a part of of that Journey uh seven high schools participated across the districts such as Crawford Claremont Mira Mesa just to name a few and of course the increase of programs that participated we had eight uh between both uh discover series the employer networking again you know just that piece of making sure that they're able to see you know what's that next step what's that next future step look like um and lastly this leads to our Signing Day which we are currently planning uh next month it'll it'll take place and we want to focus on that celebration that commitment and we hope that students that attend did
097this a discover series either one of the events uh decide and think you know what Miramar College was really that community that I found when I went to visit your school and actually when I went to an Outreach event not that long ago a student came up to me and was like hey I remember you because I was one of the MCS I remember you you actually were at that event I went to your school and I was thinking to my head what event were you you're talking about right and he started describing it and I was like oh yeah you went to one of our Discover series events and it was awesome just to see that personal connection he was really excited I was really happy I was like okay somebody recognized me I
098felt a little famous um but it was it was nice to see that actually come into a reality but more to come on that but again we want students to you know hopefully go to the Signing Day event and really think about Miramar College as their future and think you know what this is where I belong all right thank you and then with that I'll pass it on to Desi is Jessie Clark I am an adjunct faculty member at Miramar College I'm a retired classified administrator weeks after I retired someone called and said we need you so I've been there for completing my seventh full Academic Year at Scripps Ranch High School in the CCAP program teaching business and marketing it has been a blast um I I prepared two paragraphs that I want to
099read because specifically I do not want to go down a rabbit hole and then have everybody listen to a black shortness where I'm not teaching right now okay what happened [Music] the wrong one interesting okay so I teach business 100 the first semester and then I teach marketing the second semester rather than just teaching out of a textbook I have completely created my own way to meet your four goals that I was asked to speak on um Civic Global light Readiness uh how do we manage and Market the CCAP program moving forward managing an endemic world and um I think there's one more there's one more that didn't didn't qualify for me okay so what I do is I create things that are like news you can use and things that are real life scenarios
100in the class um we create entrepreneur based companies in the beginning of the year students get together in a group five or six students and they create a fake company so to speak uh we also play the stock market game we had out of 334 students at Scripps Ranch High School and all around our region in southern California one of our teams was number three what were they doing they wouldn't share their strategy um I also have created something called The Fate f-a-t-e Fate game these are real life scenarios they reach their hands into different bags they get a job they get a car they get a career they get a house uh they get alimony they get all kinds of neat little caveats of real life that we get thrown out flat tires you
101know things like this and then they learn how to navigate thinking forward and keeping that checkbook in the black and not the red uh also the news you can use pieces we learn how to balance the account that I just mentioned I'm always teaching them what is compound interest right this is something that some of us don't understand until we've already signed on the dotted line and don't understand why a thirty thousand dollar card cost us 60 000 to pay it off so I try to really teach them the news you can use is what I call it social and professional sustainability and their careers do not procrastinate as one of my main things that I say every week why is entrepreneurial thinking so vital and well that's what America was built on is entrepreneurs
102and then navigating the college website and Services I teach them how to find their transcripts I teach them how to find out where next classes are I teach them about grants and hearing about people like you Maximus you know I teach them all the things that they would need to know to be comfortable in their seat when they're at home deciding what do I want to do next with my college career um before I get to this I'm going to read the two paragraphs because I have so much I just feel like uh I might miss something so um I'm a first generation college graduate and I realize that a lot of my students are also first generation students as well as they will be first generation graduates and my goal is to prepare them
103for life not only with what is in the text but like I said news you can use and how to prepare for their early life how do they navigate the college system how to pay bills interview skills entrepreneurial sustainable minded thinkers I teach them humility ethical Global ethical Global scenarios that occur um we we use news articles and different things and I want them to be teachable and I want them to remain respectful as they move forward when we're in a classroom sometimes we're in a bubble and what happens there we just stay in our own little high school campus and I want them to be Global thinkers 16 weeks is a short semester and it's a lot of information to try to teach them just what's in the text as well as the things
104that I've explained to you so in the CCAP courses that I teach the first semester as I mentioned is business 100 and that's the overview of all business function accounting Human Resources Global markets the stock market things like that and then the second semester we take that that company that they create I told you they're entrepreneurs and they create a company all through the semester they're moving through how do I do accounting how do I set up uh how do I set up ethical processes in Human Resources hiring um communicating with my employees when they're not doing well real life scenarios that we would use in all those chapters during that 16 weeks and then the second semester we move into marketing and you think well what do you do in marketing right advertisements and
105things like that they take their take company and they Market it they learn about what a target market is who are the customers that they will be drawing in to be more profitable how will their investors decide to invest more money so that they can go Global we really use a lot of Life scenarios we we before even before the shutdown we were using Amazon as a growth model or apple and now we're studying what Amazon did for the last three years so um that's a great opportunity for them to learn about news you can use real life scenario I teach them the importance of transcripts as I mentioned I want them to know the college website we've gone through the whole entire thing they know where to get information on eops tsps Outreach any
106events any opportunities for um events that are going on College hour anything even though they're not going to leave their campus to go to college hour I want them to know what it feels like to be on campus as college students so back to this first generation students um they're already freshmen in college so when they move over to Miramar or they go to whatever College they end up at they're so much more successful I get emails all the time saying thank you for teaching me the importance of what a college transcript will do for me when I leave High School because it follows you forever right if you get an incomplete you've got to redo that class and I teach them that uh as far as marketing goes the word of mouth students are
107waiting in line to get into our college classes I hear about it every semester they'll come in and say do you have an extra seat and said oh you've got to go talk to your school counselors at the high school and you know of course parent desire right the parents are starting to really see how great this is I see parents in the audience tonight this is amazing um well so referring to the college career Readiness items we go over ethical scenarios every other week we go through something because there's always something in the news that we need to talk about we do not supposed to say case studies for students sorry about that case studies for students they work on case studies things that are real life rather than just the chapters in the
108book that have been pre-written um and right now they're getting together they're putting something together called a pitch deck a pitch deck is an entrepreneurial and digital marketing presentation on everything they've worked on for the last eight months and they're going to do a shark tank presentation to each other in class and other students are wanting to know how they can get into my class next semester so I feel honored to be there finishing my seventh year and I don't have any intentions of retiring even though I'm I can retire I'm going to hold out as long as I can I love getting the emails years later when they've gone on to get their master's degree or when they are ready to explain to a younger sibling why they need to enroll in a CCAP
109course because that sibling doesn't really want to to go to college yet right as Chantel explained maybe they just haven't heard that message the seed hasn't been planted yet um I think that's it for me I just want to say thank you so much and I don't know how to walk okay I'm going to introduce Kim and she can figure out the microphone good evening board my name is Kimberly teston from San Diego Miramar College I'm the Project Lead for a biotechnology Talent pipeline program and I'm going to go ahead and play a couple of videos one is my actual presentation and the next one is uh the student testimonials video yes the presentation video thank you hello my name is Kimberly teston from San Diego Miramar College and today I'll be talking about our
110biotech career Jumpstart program this program is a talent pipeline program it is free for our students and we start out with Rising 9th graders and we follow them through all throughout their High School career we provide Hands-On lab activities and Industry infusion in terms of Company tours and Industry speakers we offer the ACT workkeys workplace certification exam career workshops mental health workshops by the time the students reach their junior year in high school they're eligible to take the dual enrollment or concurrent enrollment credit by exam at miramisa high school onto the certification program here uh with the biotech department at Miramar College and also in their senior year they're eligible for dual enrollment again at Miramar College for the certification program funding for this program is from the CCAP stem Pathways Grant awarded to Miramar
111College and it will sunset in June 2025. this program has several collaborators the biotech Center here at Miramar College the instructional services division in our district office to process credit by exam San Diego Unified District that's um where our all our students are from and our industry liaison our biocom Institute and Karen overcliffe so why did we start this program San Diego is part of the biotech Beach which is one of the largest hubs of biotechnology in the country if you look at the lower left picture this is the biotech beach map and Mira Mesa High School is Mack right in the middle of this and it just makes sense to cultivate local talent to give opportunities to our local residents to get their foot in the door in the industry as well as help
112our employers reach talent and hire Talent locally as opposed to higher looking all over the globe or all over the country this is the timeline of our program we started in 2019 our very first cohort of rising 9th graders started a program July 2020 and every year since then we have added a new group of ninth graders so now we have three cohorts if we go down um the spreadsheet here we are on year three the very first cohort is now in 11th grade they are taking their biotech electives at Mira Mesa High School all of them go there and then also they're eligible again for credit by exam and then this summer they will be eligible for high school internships and then the other two cohorts are following right along so right now our
113um participant we have about 65 participants 65 percent are female 35 are male 88 are underserved there are three cohorts um our funding again ends in 2025 and our hope is to find the resources to keep this program sustainable so we can add a new cohort every year and see them through all throughout the Community College journey and so now I'm going to go ahead and show some students and teacher testimonial and then I will answer questions right after the video thank you so much I believe because of time constraints we can't show the student testimonials so I'm finished okay I would like to invite our main facilitators oh here we go good evening everyone board how are you okay very good I like the energy very good okay so my name is Dean Luke
114machaca I'm representing the San Diego Community College District and I have a fantastic co-presenter for this presentation and I'll let Lorena introduce herself hi my name is Lorena Ford and I'm the student engagement intern for San Diego unified little round of applause please amazing let's go if we can get our slide up that would be awesome but I'm gonna we're actually gonna dive back into goal one and we're really gonna start talking about the goal that was set last year and when this sport when this goal came across our desk we were talking about the idea what can we do what can we do to really bring our two student student boards together how can we start that collaboration and to speak about the power of what we have here between San Diego Unified School
115District and the San Diego Community College District it was one email that brought us together and we got connected with Miss Stacy with Lorena and we started our partnership now initially when getting started we wanted to look at what can we do to bring these two two student bodies together also how can we create some joint goals together what can we work on where can we go and what can we accomplish in this year so we're obviously we started working on that now the thing that really got me excited was the idea that we actually got to connect first we shared who are you what is your structure what does it look like at your high school campuses your district and then we did the same what does it look like at our College our
116district and how do we work together on it and really what came from this was a desire coming from our USC meeting which is our United student council which houses one of our student trustees here Julia is one of our trustees from San Diego City Mesa Miramar and the College of continuation that meeting meeting kicked it off and it opened the door for us to connect with two more student governing bodies that we're really excited about and I'm going to pass it to Lorena briefly to touch on what those two groups were yeah so I had the privilege of attending one of the USC USC meetings and just hearing all the excitement from this the students and wanting to connect to high school students we wanted to put together two presentations about what it meant
117to be a student leader um in community college and after high school and we wanted to give that presentation to some of our most involved leaders at San Diego unified and so we decided to present to the ASB uh the Council of ASB presidents and the student Advisory Board two of our major student groups now those of you that know the San Diego Community College District we're not just going to just come out and just send one presentation we bring the family we bring the family to our groups right so we actually get we're able to coordinate we had a representation from two deans of student affairs one from Mesa College uh one from Miramar College and then we also brought our student trustees out and that was the special thing because sometimes you know
118I think we have some good insight as professional staff administrators but the student voice is powerful and we all know that so we actually created space for our student trustees to share now starting with our Deans they're able to share structure when can you get started at the San Diego Community College District in regards uh to coming and being a student leader we looked at the senator position only needing uh six units to get started a lot of our students are actually finishing that in the CCAP program dual enrollment so they're able to start in leadership right away when coming onto our campuses we also touched on scholarships we touched on what it means to to to to support and be a part of the community tons of things came out of that but the
119last part of it was our student trustees and this is where it really came and I'll give a special shout out to our board here from the San Diego Community College District where we actually went to Washington DC in Sacramento and the students were able to share their experience and how powerful it was to not just share their story but to share a table with our local legislators in Washington and in Sacramento it was a powerful time and the students were able to share that with the students at sandywood Unified now it was such a special time for us to kind of open it and a lot of great things and goals came from it and I'm going to pass it over back to Lorena to share a little bit about some of the things
120that came from it sure um okay so uh it was very interesting and Powerful to see both the student trustees from the Community College District and our student leaders at San Diego unified reflect on how on the impact that connecting and strengthening our connection would have and some of the things that came out of that um was uh the open invitation from both sides to attend USC meetings and the Council of ASB meetings and student Advisory board meetings to learn more about opportunities and the way our district leadership groups are structured so that we can each take something back and Implement and see how we can work together to reach each other and meet each other where we're at um and then this alone can have a great impact because it opens the door to
121learning more about each other and trying to understand and collaborate um and wonderful um and again this was this was a very powerful session I do want to send a special apology to all those students because there was a lot of energy in the room we actually had to pull it back a little bit and say okay we're going to come back um but there was a there was a lot of eager uh eagerness in the room to to start that discussion what can we do to move forward a couple just quick highlights that came from this meeting was students wanted more information about the promise they wanted more information about how can we get involved with early college credit they also wanted to see what we can do with bringing other students at the
122San Diego Community College District to provide insights uh and how to be successful in college courses those are some of the biggest things that I remember coming out and then lastly what we wanted to really see and what the students brought was what can we do to collaborate further and we're really going to start looking into how we can have a joint conference with our with our two student leaders but not just us what can we do to incorporate uh different institutions locally like San Diego State UC San Diego University of San Diego because students from San Diego unified may be going to us directly they may be going to them directly but our students at San Diego Community College District because we can be going to them as well so what can we do
123to come together to start that collaboration with all of us now you're probably tired of hearing my voice and I know I do so we're going to jump to the next slide and I have a couple student voices that we're going to play from our trustees Alan and Diego we obviously have uh Julia here as well but if we can start the video thank you [Music] my goal to accomplish with the San Diego Unified School District is to help destigmatize the negative connotation that community colleges hold because I know at least when I was in high school when I didn't get into college I thought everything was over oh no but then I was introduced to Miramar so I think this would be a great opportunity for the high schoolers I know all the schools
124as counselors definitely advertise the CSUS near our region and then also the UCS because everyone wants to go to a UCR CSU but they don't really touch on Community College as an option especially for students that are struggling financially they'll offer financial aid or options over attending Community College so I think it was really cool that the students could kind of already see that Community College is a pretty great option if you're um maybe not ready to attend a four-year Public University or if you just want to save money meeting up with the students from the high schools at the Sandy Unified School District was pretty cool and pretty inspiring to me I kind of saw myself and them I also did some similar work with student government when I was in high school and
125it was really cool to see that I could kind of help them out and offer them guidance in pursuing Student Government if they were interested at a college level students from San Diego unified are either about to go into college for the first time or already taking dual enrollment classes so you you kind of have a little bit of feel for Community College but you don't know what to fully expect so one of our goals would be it's uh set up a toolkit well here's here's something you should do here's your your classroom realm and series stuff you should prepare for you should communicate with with your professor early it was exciting to see the excitement in people's eyes and and their voices and to see how that they they have from my perspective they
126have endless possibilities and potentials that they can be achieving a whole new world is opening up and you're seeing uh all the Reds the blues the greens that I can paint this picture for your future there are so many valuable opportunities for both community college students and high school students at the college level and by increasing awareness of the opportunities through future joint leadership and Club fairs as well as direct presentations from Community College Deans as well as student trustees students will be encouraged to not be afraid to explore their post-high school options in leadership and higher education thank you so much yes we're gonna take the round of applause as we can get it yes okay so we're going to move on to our last portion of our of our presentation uh and the
127next portion is relationship to goal four and which is which is legislation alignment fundraising and collaborative grants uh trustees superintendent Jackson I would like to welcome Dr Carlos Cortez our Chancellor of the San Diego Community College District to speak about the San Diego Metro collaborative thank you good evening ladies and gentlemen the San Diego Metro collaborative formed about six months ago and I want to thank Dr Topham who uh spearheaded this effort for our district and Dr fishtall Who since become the lead administrator of the Metro collaborative is an initiative that's focused on moving the most systematically disadvantaged students into the middle class it includes uh the San Diego Community College District the San Diego Unified School District San Diego State University the University of San Diego University of California San Diego the San Diego
128Foundation the Conrad previous Foundation the United Way the San Diego Workforce partnership and The Economic Development Council as our founding members we are we have met twice our third meeting will be in June and at that meeting we will approve some bold ambitious audacious goals for how we can work collectively and use our resources optimally to support these end objectives and we hope to report back next year at our meeting about the progress we've made in our region we are uniquely positioned as a as a region as a very large city to have one K-12 district and one Community College District that can help Drive these work and I I think standing here in this beautiful new building today is illustrative of both of our District's commitment to supporting the neediest students in our community
129and so with that and in light of our time I just wanted to make you all aware of the work of the San Diego Metro collaborative and I hope you follow this work closely this is going to be I believe a game-changing initiative wherein we work collaboratively across major institutions to bring together our resources to focus on those most in need thank you do Dr Cortez we skipped over a little part um let's see I think we now need to get a motion to approve the joint goals we have a motion Dr Whitehurst pain I heard oh we're not doing that yet okay it shows here that we're good I think we're just going to talk legislation briefly and then we're going to move right it has me doing the goal doing the motion first
130but you want to do the first part first and then go back yes okay thank you and so we're moving on to the legislation and um superintendent Jackson and Chancellor Cortez will speak to those thank you very much uh we are um asking the Community College Board to support uh legislative action that we are currently advocating for and that's assembly Bill 275 uh sponsored by assembly uh person Ward that would allow school districts to compensate student board members and again some of the details are not uh written but we know how much time that our students spend uh participating in the work of a school board we currently have interns that are working for the school district Lorena who I just presented is one of them we also have interns that are helping us draft
131our local control accountability plan and this is certainly in alignment with that and so that's one that we will be supporting and asking the Community College District to support as well thank you and seeing that we compensate our student trustees equivalently to what we compensate our elected trustees I think that our district would likely be very supportive of this um there are two pieces of legislation that I've been asked to speak to today the first is AB 91 Alvarez AB 91 would expand access to the Region's community colleges by removing Financial barriers for low-income binational students by allowing residents residing within 45 miles of the California Mexico border to enroll at any San Diego and Imperial County Community College institution and pay the in-state tuition rate we are very enthusiastic about this legislation and a
132happy to report today that it passed through the assembly and so it's now moving to the senate for approval and then secondly AB 634 this is our third attempt at this legislation this would change the accounting practices for managed enrolled non-credit Career Development and college preparation courses earlier today we heard about the CNA program many of you might not be aware whereas K-12 districts and our traditional credit courses are a portioned based on a different accounting method for our non-credit courses we have to count every 15 minutes that a student's in their seat and that's a very onerous process and frankly as we've transitioned to move our non-credit programs to have a start date and an end date they're no longer open exit open entry where people show up when they want they have a
133formal start and a formal end we're optimistic that the state will finally Provide support and I did hear today that our new state Chancellor Sonia Christian is going to provide support for this legislation which is the first time we've had strong support from the state system as well so fingers crossed we're going to get this over the hurdle and I don't know if some superintendent uh Jackson if you'd like to speak to ab2 610 or if you'd like me to do so it's up to you well we can do it I'm sure uh both of us can say that we we support this uh jointly uh where we are really advocating for uh the extension of the pilot for the Youth transit pass and we also want to support extending the age to 24. uh
134it's been through 18 uh in the past and we want to continue to do so because we we're talking about our students and access to our community colleges uh access to work and so this would really be something that I think both districts can support and I should mention trustee Emeritus Peter zici and trustee and Meredith Sean ELO who's now the council president have long been advocating for this uh development for local free public transport for high school and college students and so this is a long-term Vision that our district has had and we have our full weight and support behind it thank you and I think I'll turn over to president bazzo who uh we'll take that up with both boards and see where we we can get the support okay so I think
135next we're jumping here to is there a motion to jointly support assembly bills uh 91 275 610 and 634 and then we will discuss Ed trustee reinerson and yes and second by Dr Peterson okay so now we're going to discuss the legislation as anyone have any questions or comments about it in addition I'm sorry in addition to ab91 ab364 also moved out of the assembly today I just got a message any questions or comments oh yes trustee crittoriano just like to make a quick comment about bills that are being proposed in the legislation that's being put forward you know when we talk about the idea of supporting Youth and students students will be the leaders of the future but we could also be the leaders of today given the right resources and supports and what
136that support looks like means equity in compensation and seeing us as equals and giving us the opportunities for transportation and I'd just like to thank and support these resolutions and these legislations that bridge that Gap into making us the leaders of today thank you thank you trustee coutoriano anyone else interesting Dr Patterson I'll just say very briefly in relation to Youth Opportunity passes I think all of us are very much committed broadly to mass transit and our students uh it's not it's not it's just a convenience this is about reducing absenteeism it's about reducing um uh our the crises we have around our chronic uh not just absenteeism but also to Chronic tardiness we have some of our schools um it's also about safety it's also about frankly ghg emissions getting students two-thirds of our
137GHC emissions are coming from student and staff Transportation every morning so um this is very exciting I was able to work on this with supervisor Watson Riemer on on sandag um uh and frankly I would also like to recognize chair Nora Vargas at sandag for really championing this for many years and council member or council president Shawnee Rivera who's really again to reiterate champions for many many years it's taken over a decade to get here so um and and I'd further like to say I think we are all committed to Safe routes to schools which now I just understood that trustee Hazen worked on uh earlier in her career and I think we should all start advocating at sandak for for additional Investments and safe foods to schools and a mass transit for our students
138so absolutely thank you trustee Patterson yeah I think there's always so much that goes on behind the scenes that we don't appreciate a lot of times so thank you for recognizing that are we good we're gonna go to a vote all right all in favor motion support these uh this legislation and you want to post all right motion passes unanimously I think it's worth noting of the for the eighth largest city I believe in the United States the other seven largest cities all have free transportation for middle school high school and college students and so we're behind the curve in this regard okay yes okay so I'm gonna go back to the Joint goals you're supposed to discuss that one so we're going back to that we had a motion I think from um trustee
139Dr Whitehurst pain and do we have a second to pass those joint goals by trustee nippamacino okay so now we're gonna take some time to discuss those ask any questions um I do want to encourage you not if you have something that you want to add that's fine not necessarily everyone has to speak at every goal so um we you know just kind of sharing as you see fit we appreciate that yes trustee Dr waitersby really appreciate this year at the report because you had so many student voices and um you've made progress I the first one to say when I'm very displeased with the progress but today I'm saying that I am pleased and we're not there but the kind of things that you're talking about such as the signing days that's what you
140call them right um earlier you said that you were going to do some of the support items and I wonder well what are we talking about you have the numbers still aren't there and if you're going to keep on doing the same thing you're not going to get there but then when I saw the sign up days and when I heard Maximus on talking I realized that you are you you're taking that next step and you're doing it and he's very important you went to Morris High School right and for me as the trustee of remorse high school has always been a concern when I speak to every High School senior as a graduate I always want to know where are you going to school and I hear um Southwest College I hear and I
141know it's the southern end of San Diego and Southwest is right over the freeway and I hear East County and Grossmont and everywhere else except San Diego community colleges but then he gave the story somebody came to the school talked to him and now he's an advocate that's how we win that's how we we are ahead of the game so that you can go back and talk to the other students at Morse high school and at Lincoln and Crawford and let them know that something good is happening in the San Diego community colleges I'm not this I'm not putting down the other community colleges but I do know what we're doing because we've been meeting and so I just at least want our students in San Diego unified to know what we're doing and I
142say thank you to the college thank you to you because I think we're on the path to achieve equity and parody so that we don't have the gaps as you've been talking about thank you thank you trustee Dr Whitehurst Payne uh trustee Barrera uh just a couple of questions so first uh do you want to explain the action items here okay so thank you for that we are asking the board uh boards to take action on the following we we as a joint board set lofty goals and we recognize that we have not met all of these goals and we're striving to meet uh the goals when we as a work group have been reviewing the goals we find that it is necessary to merge some of our goals together and these are the actions
143that we're taking we're asking the board to take so the first action is to take action to move two of the sub goals the objectives from goal three into goal two the the objectives you'll see are bulleted so we're asking to to move address students sense of safety and belonging under goal two because we feel that it is better served there and then collaboration on tiered student supports move that into goal two then we're going to ask you to take action to eliminate a sub goal in goal three which is the board leadership to connect on covid-19 policies and procedures we've done a great job in doing that we feel we're at a better place um and so with that elimination then we would end up striking goal three and then in essence have three
144goals instead of four then we are asking the board to take action because we have talked about adding metrics for each of the goals to ensure that we're monitoring measurable outcomes and impact so those are the actions that we're hoping that the board will take and so that we can move forward with our work yeah so I I appreciate that and um I wonder on uh so I I I understand sort of eliminating the goal of you know we're in an endemic World um but there are certain realities that I think we're saying may be partly as a result of being in an endemic World which include things like declining enrollment um in our case chronic absenteeism uh all the issues connected to safety and belonging on campus so I'm just wondering um if we
145want to be more explicit in naming what those challenges are and whether they fit under one of the other three goals or whether they should stand out as their own goal um it was very clear to all of us you know a year ago or you know a couple of years ago when we were talking about being in the pandemic but I think it's important that we clarify what some of these major challenges are uh you know where we where we stand now so if if you feel like in the three other goals we're we're clear about what some of our major challenges are that we're facing today great um if you feel that that needs to be further clarified then that would be welcome we did discuss this uh as a as a collective
146group as we were putting the agenda together I I do think that it would be important to be specific around safety and belonging I do believe that it fits in goal two um and the elimination of goal three but I think your point is well made to be very specific on what it means of for our students to have a sense of safety and belonging and we heard a little bit in the presentation but again having metrics to really identify those um so there was some some conversation um so I I guess I would encourage us to um you know push it into goal three uh goal two but delineate specific outcomes that we are expecting um question from trustee rainerson uh Richard and Vermont thanks for for clarifying that and I think it does
147fit into goal two but the just the word you know being um direct about safety and belonging I think is something we can ask our staff to add City College motto is you belong here and what we try to do is wrap our arms around students that come from San Diego unified to all of our colleges through involvement in clubs through our programs and that is a huge thing that we're using as a selling point I think you've all heard that in the presentations tonight about belonging and the feeling about hey you can go to college and you can feel comfortable there so we can translate that feeling that we have in our colleges to what San Diego unified is doing and wrap that around into into one goal with some metrics I think it's
148a great suggestion and I would say we certainly uh are grounded in equity belonging and thriving however I think to trustee barrera's point um with recent um conditions around the nation in terms of our campuses um and the violence that is happening and and and and some of the data that would suggest chronic absenteeism may be due to students not feeling safe coming to school as trustee Patterson just mentioned um safe passage um you know safe routes to school um we really need to delineate the areas that we really want to focus on and the data points that we want to measure those on so I I think I think trustee Barrera you are um very clear and on point that we need to really add some very specific outcomes and and I would I
149would ask in the discussion if you have some of those let's mention those so that staff can have some ideas from trustees that we can have um did you have a clarification plan Yes actually um sorry um Jen just reminded me that we one of the action items that we have planned for next year is a climate survey to actually reach out to the students directly to understand to them what what their needs are and not based on us our assumptions of what students needs are but really engaging students in a conversation and getting feedback from them thank you board member Milgram I just want to make sure I I just want to go over a couple of things first of all I I don't think we can remove our cooperation or I don't think
150we should remove our cooperation on public health issue uh and I think that's what goal three was and covid-19 is just the latest and and greatest idea behind that so I I don't have any specific suggestions But continuing to collaborate and talk to each other about how we deal with public health emergencies and how we're going to deal with those in the future because they will come again I think is a worthy a worthy Place although at this point just off the top of my head I don't have anything that we could do objectively other than prep sharing procedures or or you know how we're going to approach vaccines whatever it happens to be and while we're talking about safety and belonging I would like to see uh enumerated in there something to address uh
151the lgbtq community at both districts uh the sense of safety among that Community is uh is under uh considerable duress we may think California is a safe place it isn't uh maybe San Diego is but they may not feel that that safety extends to them so with the all the anti-trans and and all of that I would just like to just see that Community identified in the discussion of safety and belonging perhaps either through questions from the climate survey or in some way or another to at least get a feeling because um I hear anecdotally that San Diego unified is very good at supporting this population but we should join together and and make that that data clear and share it with the public so that the community knows that our two districts are are
152a place of safety for that community thank you very much um trustee Milgram and then um let's go with uh trusty Hazen first and then we'll go to trustee thank you I'm stuck a little bit on um safety and belonging um going under this strategic enrollment management and marketing um I think as everybody has shared this is really important and I wonder if it's important Beyond strategic enrollment and you know marketing efforts so I'm just trying to Grapple with is that the right fit and does it make sense under that goal I support the idea of having only three goals and just some critical few objectives but like more clarity on on the fit there go ahead um I I I'd like to address what the last two trustee said and sort of leave it
153together um one safety and belonging includes all the things we've talked about including just students feel that their Public Health safety is being considered right and so that's something I hope that we do in our climate surveys um and I'm with you I think that there's more to safety and belonging and it is larger and more Central um than enrollment management and so until you said stick with three goals and then my plan fell all apart I was gonna say let's just swap out uh living an endemic world and change it for safety and belonging and have that be our fourth goal any other comments on that um Dr Cortez thank you I just wanted to share that the San Diego Metro collaborative at our second meeting identified safety as one of the goals and
154um uh the language was changed and I can't remember the word that was used but they didn't like the word safety but initially most of the feedback we received was around school shootings and policing and then it moved to prenatal care and mental health and physical health and bullying and nutrition and so in safe neighborhoods and then it moved to transportation students need to feel safe walking to and from school in their neighborhoods or taking public transportation and so I do think it's a larger bucket in which we can put a lot of initiatives and just so you know this is a desire of our region as well to emphasize the need um uh what what was brought up in that conversation is often when we think of safety that safety is a it's a
155perspective that one has I might not feel safe because a black person moved into the house next to me but that doesn't mean I'm really not safe and so the language I think the nomenclature also needs to be important in terms of threats to harm as opposed to what makes one feel safe necessarily and what's a real threat to one's well-being uh president senor I want to make sure that as we're dealing with this and I like the idea of having it as a separate goal I think this is a evolving a good direction our students are depressed and anxious and those are you know that does not make anyone feel safe so I think uh and it's obviously it's not all of our students but there's significant it's really increased and you hear the
156stories from all over the country it isn't over here so I do think that that would be something that we also want to make sure we're addressing you know is all the mental health things uh and making sure we have uh Mental Health resources available in the schools we have mental health counselors in the colleges I don't know if you have them in the city schools but obviously we need to make sure that those issues are great trustee Dr Peterson thank you so much and I I like always compensated going in the right direction um let me I just have a couple of things one is sort of a request in alignment with the final take action to add metrics um I think one of the things we need is not just um I think
157metrics will do part of it but but I see a lot of apples and oranges comparisons here where it's like wait a minute what are these programs I think there's like a concurrent enrollment and that has an 86 success rate but I don't know what success is CTE articulation has it 95 percent a earned credit uh the CCAP has a 90 early college has 36 percent uh I don't understand what the measure not just what the metrics but they're not aligned in a way that allows us to say hey this is really succeeding and doing X thing or this one is six this one's not succeeding but it actually has a lot of Promise in in getting for instance and and this is a broader question than this alignment with the Community College it's also
158Community we also want to compare the success rates or whatever whatever those whatever the rates are that we select but with UCSD and San Diego State and it's a broader question about where right now we've got these funds we've got pandemic funds they're going to run out and we're going to have to make very hard decisions about where we're going to allocate these Investments and knowing what kind of results these are getting not just is it working or not working how is it working and how can we use it to Target particular populations and particular outcomes I'd really love to see more apples to apples comparisons be possible for us as a as a joint board and the other thing I'll say too I think what um the suggestion it may have come from Mary
159just now but um okay a lot of beautiful voices speaking so um is I think what we're getting at in terms of goal three and honestly I didn't actually understand what endemic World meant in this context I think now in retrospect it must mean a post-pandemic endemic coveted moment but obviously for us there's such a larger at this point it's like oh really that's I mean it's such a broader question and I think honestly a lot of us on the board I know and I know staff have been very it's frustrating to be in education and have so much of the determinants of the of the achievement and fulfillment of your students be determined outside of the classroom and I think all of us are very much motivated this is a moment for us to
160all feel like no let's work together not just in getting this thing within our classroom right but for fighting for our students for the 80 percent of the the outcome of their lives it's going to be determined outside of our classrooms just because they're facing um you know not only health challenges but they're facing Rising wealth and income inequality enduring racial inequality their health health care challenges I mean it's like so overwhelming for for for our students and their families I think the suggestion that we have a separate uh goal that is about the social economic context of Education I think we're all on board and it's the kind of thing we could all fight together and and go out and Advocate not just in Sacramento and DC but in a city council and all
161over at all levels of government and Civil Society so I would love to see a goal that embodies that so economic context that we work together to address yes um trust email group I'm just hearing two things so I agree that we need a a goal somewhere about student well-being and and security or success so I I I'm not sure whether we can change goal two to incorporate that because goal two is obviously all of the metrics and we have that's what we mostly heard about today which is all the different programs that we're looking at um so I'm not sure whether we can decide that here or whether we can leave that to the to the more Brilliant Minds that prepare all this stuff for us and ask them to come back with with
162a suggestion about that because I think that's student well-being issue because we also talked about it with the with paying student trustees and uh at our district we're doing an awful lot of work with you know actually compensating students for going to school yeah that's that's raining out yeah um and um yeah so Payton internships paying student trustees and valuing their time as uh as the student the student trustee mentioned earlier so I see all of this kind of fitting together under that a larger rubric of of that and I also have to agree that a lot of the data uh is confusing in terms of how what it's compared to it I have a list of questions here about data which I'm not going to talk about but there were things in my head
163so I'm glad somebody mentioned it thank you thank you I'll be Mr Arroyo thank you uh very brief um I wrote this um engaging parents or families um last week I visited it uh Wilson not Wilson sorry Hoover and Lincoln high schools and I noticed that they have parent centers um and it just goes along with preparing you know the student and creating an environment where they can succeed so I know that you know parents we want parents to join our community colleges so I I don't know how you know you go about engaging uh parents into our community colleges when the presenters were talking about the faces that the families you know students with their families go on the jumpstart programs and I I'm curious you know you know whether parents become interested themselves
164you know to enroll at the community colleges and and and what will that mean right for students I remember at Miramar College there was a story about a remember the the student in a parent enrolling at the same time you know and in classes this is just um elevating you know not only the student but their families you know as well um I don't want to create more work for our staff but I think it's it can be an opportunity you know um when we visit thank you thank you yep Dr Jackson if I can um a lot of voices we obviously to take this away so trustee Barrera if if you can summarize what you know obviously we're asking for this if if we're going to ask for a motion just to get some
165clarity in terms of what that motion would be so we know how to take that into action and because we are going to really focus on metrics and very specific things I'm going to encourage us to think less is more but some very specific outcomes we do have a motion on the floor right now so do we need how so yes and before I do I'm wondering can you bring up the slide with the four goals because I think there's a lack of clarity around the specific goals we're talking about and and then there seems to be consensus around what's being described as well-being and belonging and so I think the question before us is does that somehow get fit into one of three goals or become a new fourth goal so I I think
166that the response is they're already in a third goal which means we have four goals so we were just eliminating one portion of it the pandemic piece and then taking the two sub goals and putting them somewhere else so that I think what you're suggesting is leave them there in goal number three rename that exactly rename it to safety and belonging correct and then let staff really work with you know we can talk about student voice yes um and if we could call it well-being and belonging that that that I I think that makes sense so I just if you wanna if you wanna yes I would like to amend the motion to approve goal one College and Career Readiness goal two strategic enrollment management and marketing goal three well-being and belonging goal for legislation
167alignment fundraising and collaborative collaborative grants all with very clear specific measurable outcomes we are driving towards okay so now that we have the amended motion on the floor do we have any additional discussion on that well yeah uh trustee Barrera um for goal three uh well-being and belonging um I would hope that our main metric is actually not climate surveys I don't think climate surveys tell us a lot and so I think when we're when you are developing metrics you know to bring back to us I would hope what you focus on is what are the proven strategies that we actually know improve student well-being and belonging and how are we doing in moving those those strategies forward trustee Dr Whitehurst pain but I think also we have to get Beyond doing these Global surveys
168and do some in-depth interviews to find out what the issues are and I would add to your comment about the lgbtq community that we also need to look at the Asian issues the uh all of them I mean just anybody who has an issue that they feel uncomfortable with and that's what you'll get at when you do the interviews and find out what it is from the students rather than these meaningless Global surveys thank you trustee or president senior yeah one one of the things that was thrown in just one comment was made about bullying that's a big one especially for kids who are perceived as fat or or kids who have a different a gender identity uh those kids get bullied especially but I think it's something that little kids you know uh because
169of their size sometimes get bullied by bigger ones and so I'm hoping that we develop some interesting goals around that Dr Jackson oh I just didn't want to lose the parent enrollment piece and so I'm wondering if we can embed that in strategic enrollment goal two high back rejection just clarification uh trustee Barrera um I think it's important for us to to recognize the implementation of strategies that we know that work however I want to encourage us to not just be about what we've implemented we say we've implemented this in 30 classrooms but we don't measure the impact of the implementation and then we don't get the information we need to make the adjustments necessary for impact I don't I mean we've had lots of a discussions so I'm sure I I just as as
170we've talked about I just don't believe that the way we measure impact um is climate service so I I you're just trying to get at a um I I completely agree with you we could say that we're we've put strategies in place but we need to know whether they're working but in terms of knowing whether they're working I wouldn't want us to come back and say we move from 73 to 74 of students saying blah blah blah partly as a you know with the reality that Chancellor Cortez mentioned that these terms mean different things to different people and so I I just I think there are better ways um that uh again researchers could help us with to measure whether these strategies are working um then surveys thank you uh Dr Peterson uh that was
171a something Sun we share the final three letters of our name but um I'll just go very briefly what I don't want to Lost is that a climate survey even if we were going to use climate surveys they're not going to tell us what's happening externally to the classroom and and one thing I want to just not get lost is that it's important for us to be assessing and understanding I mean that it's not just about us getting everything right there's sort of perfection complex that we put on teachers and staff you need to dial this in a lot of these we have homelessness housing and security housing affordability violence uh adverse childhood experiences all these things that are occurring and and I for this category it's really important for I think a lot of
172us that this is not just about what's happening quote on our watch we do want to dial that in and perfect that to the best to best of our ability but we also need I think a lot of us are very much committed to to intervening in whatever way we need to and identifying because part of what this is is identifying what we need to do in goal four in terms of legislation but we have to be able to assess hey this is a super big problem Transportation it's a huge problem housing is a huge problem and then feed that into our legislative agenda thank you um Cody that that really adds some important additional context to the new goal um that we're putting together and I really like where this has gone because we
173want to work together as districts on housing um on the normal street site I know our Chancellor and your superintendent have been talking about Partnerships around that we're working at city college to do student housing to help homeless students and we can do employee housing so this this bucket that we've now redefined goal three as I think can come back to this board with with some really important things in it and I just before we vote on this I just want to make a couple of observations first of all to thank and and express my admiration for the staffs of both districts for the presentation that we had tonight the dashboard and the the data that we were presented on outcomes is the first time in my 11 years of doing this meeting that we've
174really seen that put all in one place and we're talking about making that even better through our joint discussions here tonight and looking back on the the impact that these joint meetings have had I remember a few years ago trustee Barrera and I brought up the whole area of computer education and here it is tonight with a a dual enrollment certificate at Point Loma High School so that was something we brought up in this joint meeting and we've seen action and we've seen collaboration between the districts and we've seen it a couple of years ago we talked about career Pathways in this meeting and how can we work together to improve that and the teacher Pipeline and I remember that whole discussion and now what do we have we have a CNA program and we
175have the the teacher intern pathway program that have actually come from discussions in this meeting so tonight we're talking about a new goal three about student well-being and a focus on that and and belonging and I expect that you know next year or the year after that we'll see our staffs now work together on that re that that new goal three so I'm just really really impressed and grateful uh to have experienced this as a trustee over the 11 years at what our staffs have done to collaborate because I remember when I was chief of staff at unified 12 years ago and the time has blown we hardly even talked to each other and a superintendent Koba and uh Constance Carroll the chancellor and the two boards got together and our math faculty started talking
176to each other we started to align things but it is involved so so much that now there's that built-in collaboration that was not there a decade ago so uh I think that's to a great extent of the work of my colleagues on my board and your board and what we've done to give that direction and then how the staff has just picked it up and run with it so um I'm just filled with gratitude and admiration uh to the work that we've seen tonight and this student involvement that we've seen Maximus you were amazing and we're also proud of you and our trustees and that's why I'm really happy to support uh where we've taken this discussion and the motion on the floor thank you um so in addition to goal three um just because
177we're kind of nearing the end of our time um are there any comments about any of the other goals if you want to share okay I want to share um and I think I brought this up last year and I'll skip on my soapbox for a little for a minute uh Dr Jackson knows I'm very passionate about the idea about the tutoring program and I know that you had mentioned I think it was at Mesa college that they were doing the program with Hoover High School and how important that is and as I mentioned last year I really would love to see that at other schools I don't know why we only have it at one high school we need to have that at multiple high schools especially with the issues around teacher not having
178enough teachers um we have them you know we just need to grow them from uh from our high school so uh why are we not doing this at more high school or more high schools and in connection with more of the community college so I'm very passionate about this that program I know San Diego unified has been working on it but would love to see really see that program girl I don't know if there's any plans for that um Jen if you can speak to that at all or actually yes um so we are we are we are always exploring um I think one of the the challenges that we have along the way is resources right and so as we try to identify and grow the teacher pipeline program I know that Mesa is
179committed to um really dedicating additional resources but it becomes a prioritization piece of it and sometimes it becomes a difficult conversation not to say that it's not always a plan to increase and I know that um especially Mark manasse who runs the program at Mesa college is really dedicated and committed to this program and increasing and providing um additional possibilities and opportunities for students across so it's there it's just part of that planning process in identifying resources San Diego unified has the education innovation research Grant which applies to exactly what you're talking about as far as expanding our tutoring opportunities across our high school s so we're working with Sarah to develop that return fantastic thank you um so overall I'd like to just highlight and express a deep admiration for the Outreach efforts that
180were presented tonight I had the amazing opportunity to attend both the ASB council meeting and student Advisory board meeting where there were presentations and effort to connect the district students with government bodies and learning about the promise scholarships or student leadership opportunities um directly from student trustees and fellow students that are going to Community College was such a great experience students hearing directly from students is an unparalleled experience because you're able to feel comfortable and empowered to ask questions since there are no wrong questions so as we continue to fulfill these goals and build this partnership I think it's really important that we continue to empower and uplift student voice thank you um trustee um Graham I'll be very quick Chancellor I promise um I I just want to Echo trustee reinerson's gratitude to first
181of all the folks who hosted us everybody who participated and especially to the staff who did the presentations and I want to send a special shout out back to Mesa to mark manessi because it was at one of these meetings a number of years ago when we were talking about the teacher Pipeline and I said hey there's some great tutoring program at Mesa college and we sort of signed markup for it without consulting Him in Advance um and so on as a tutoring quarter myself I do understand all the many responsibilities he has in addition to this wonderful opportunity and so just wanted to send things back that way to Mark and to everyone everybody at Miramar everybody at CE this is the work of thousands of people quite literally thank you Dr waitress being
182I just wanted to encourage all of us to realize that the Secretary of Education uh Cardona was talking about the fact that you have either the uh going into just mechanics or whatever versus college and university and we have it all here you don't need to go with I mean if you want to be a mechanic the way to go there is through your project so it's not an idol or it's interwoven and we jointly support that because later on you may want to add on more and more and more but it's not you have to go into um academics or you go into mechanics or you go into Cuisine or whatever it's all together we're we're one unit we're fabric here thank you trustee Barrera yeah I just want to I think was it
183last year's meeting um trustee Arroyo made a really important point that I just want to make sure that we lift up and we don't lose so in the work that we're jointly doing around career Pathways around supporting young people to go into the workforce um we have to choose our partners uh strategically because I'll give you an example and I love the you know the CNA prep program but a CNA at some places can be a pathway to a meaningful career and in other places can be a dead-end job and so the way we pick our partners um including partners with labor Partners um who are focused on uh an economy that creates living wage jobs as opposed to uh destroys living wage jobs is something that I think is a statement of our joint
184values in our two districts and so I would want that level of analysis applied to as we identify careers as we identify Partners who we work with we're picking the right partners and we're picking careers that we would be proud our students can enter and again and I think trustee brought this up as well part of a partnership with organized labor on this question is imparting to young people that whether your job is a meaningful career or a dead-end job you have the power to determine what that job can be it's not just about what other people decide um and so I think those Partnerships towards living wage meaningful careers uh and and helping young people understand the role they can play in turning a job into a meaningful living wage career is something that
185we should have in our in our analysis yeah we ready to vote and our goals we already have the emotion and second uh all in favor opposed all right unanimously passed and I would like to Echo my fellow colleagues um uh thank yous to everyone who put together this program tonight um in this incredible complex was so wonderful to see the Logan Memorial education complex and get to tour and thank you to everyone who joined us this evening and with that I we're gonna oh yes gavel's here and we'll do an official Journey this meeting is now adjourned for the San Diego unified board and this meeting is adjourned for the San Diego Community College District board [Music] [Applause]
