set man well welcome to the can you believe it November 1 meeting of the San Louis Coastal Unified School District Board of Trustees at this time we'd ask those in attendance to please keep your videos off and audio muted unless you're presenting information or speaking in public comment we're offering translation services for our Spanish speaking attendees to access translation please click on the globe at the bottom of your screen and then the language at this time we'd like to ask if anyone who might need translation would please click on the participants icon at the bottom of your screen and raise your hand gracias thank you so the board did meet in close session uh we discussed and anticpated litigation to potential cases and then as well as Personnel review uh and possible action on employment

dismissal or discipline of District employees do we have a consensus on the order of business good okay uh let's move on and attacus you want to go first and then we'll explain what's going on with moral Bay everyone um thank you again for having me uh a few things have been going out slow High since I've been here last so I'll just kind of start off with our student month barbecue our student month barbecue was last Friday and it continues to be one of the best days of the month it's really great to see all the students that have been working hard and the classrooms being highlighted and the teachers that have you know helped them achieve in the month uh getting highlighted as well and uh it's always just a really great day to

end the month off and we did do a better job this time getting the burgers out in the timely fashion uh there were some waiting problems last time but we started cooking a little bit earlier and yeah it just a really great day and then later that day we had our last home League game against Templeton um we got a win we were down in the first half 0 to 14 I think and then we came back um and the student section you know was as loud as always um cheering everyone on we did a western themed game so everyone had their you know cowboy hats and cowboy boots and and it was a really fun game so uh super awesome to see uh also we have our performing arts department uh putting on radium

girls uh which is sorry you're fine uh um putting on radium girls which is their second uh production of the year the first one was a kind of like a funny musical rendition of 20 uh U High School Musical and this one is kind of more serious deals with a few darker themes it's about about like American Factory workers female Factory workers and how they face like injustices and I haven't seen it yet I'll be seeing it this weekend but we had shows last weekend and this weekend so oh oh you saw it yeah no I'm looking forward to it yeah um but yeah super cool to see you know how talented our performers are and really excited to see radium girls so um one thing that I was going to mention um sorry I'm

blanking really quick um oh uh also we have a can food drive coming up uh next week our commissioners of sustainability and community relations are putting on a can food drive uh the caned food drive uh we're kind of putting an incentive to it to where the class that donates the most caned food uh will win Spirit points at the end of the year Spirit competition and yeah it'll be really cool to see everyone you know like fighting for that Spirit but also helping a really good cause and we also have set a date for our first open mic our Open Mic will be November 10th our Commissioner of Arts Cynthia Hernandez is putting it on and open mics always like some of the best days because you get to PE see people showing off

their talents and as like a big fan of music I like to be out in the quad uh watching them perform so super excited for the open mic and that's pretty much everything that's been going on in slow high so yeah again thanks for having me and yeah I have a question for you you you said that you have a commissioner of sustainability could you talk to me a little bit more about what that means because that's really interesting I've never heard that yeah so our Commissioner of sustainability that's Nolan atala one of my good friends he puts on a lot of events kind of surrounding like uh promoting environmental Consciousness on campus so Beach cleanups trash pickups um things like that and he works close with our community Commissioner of community relations who's more

focused on things like blood drives canned food drives but both of them are kind of um focused towards more of like the community service aspect of being an ASB member and being a slow High tiger basically um so both of their jobs are just promoting um environmental Consciousness and Community Service uh around our campus great well thank you yeah Mr cheffer how many Commissioners do you have this is sort of a new a new term we have a lot of a lot of Commissioners a few of them are like multi-person departments so for our Athletics we have three uh commissioners of Athletics and they're just basically in charge of like handling all the Athletics um we have just I think about if we have 40 kids in the class I'd say around 10 to 15

different commissioner positions so everyone kind of works collectively towards one goal sometimes like if we have a rally or um a big event coming up everyone just kind of branches together but when we're just focusing on little uh sub things going on in ASB um the Commissioners work together to kind of promote that stuff so yeah great opportunities yeah thank you thank thank you any other questions for adus okay um we do not have rep live representatives from moral Bay High School this evening my understanding is that both of our representatives are are busy one is uh is in water polo terminate tournament sorry about that and the other is have some basketball tryouts I believe but they did give us I understand a uh video which will share which will allow us to see

what's going on at Mori High School this is Dawson take it away hi it's Elana and michaa and we're so sorry we couldn't be at the board meeting tonight we're all super busy I have my first CIF water polo game tonight at 6 you should all come out and support her you should come but it's the board me allic oh anyways that's good but um and then I have basketball try outs all this week so we can't can't have made it but we did want to share some of our highlights from the past two weeks so first up homecoming went extremely well we had a record for the most amount of students at our dance which was really really awesome very much so our Avid students went on a two-day trip to UCLA Long Beach

State and Cal State LA and Cal State North Bridge last week for high school students supported us by Leading our Avid students around these universities it was especially fun to have Eric Tores in 2022 Avid Mor high school graduate we get our kids around Cal State North Bridge we've been having College cafes which are hosted by our school counselors and they've been very well attended there to help seniors with their college applications and we have a couple more coming up on November 3rd 14th 17th uh the cooking club is meeting this Saturday uh on the menu are dumplings veggie stir fry pumpkin rolls and amoretta cus oh my God okay um our surf team had another great competition at Pismo Beach on Sunday as they tried to repeat as League champions this year in sports

we have girls tennis girls waterp and football all in the playoffs also our cross country season is going with a meet at the Fairbanks course this Saturday lastly on Sports our winter sports Tri outs are held all this week and the final item to share this evening is our agie backers booster organizations having their annual barn dance fundraiser this Saturday at shallow Creek Ranch it should be a lot of fun and it's a great fundraiser and then I think a couple upcoming events that we'll talk about at the next board meeting is we have thankful week thankful week which will be the week before we have Thanksgiving break and then also our dodgeball tournament is that same week yes so that's all we have for you today thank you for having us even though it

was through technology but we'll hopefully see you in two weeks thank you very much bye I I will thank them into the ether um Mr scaly this is great thank you very much for for you know great perfect yeah thank you very much okay um and again as always adus you're welcome to stay we know that uh you've got a lot of other things you're responsible for um I think the I think personally the interesting conversation we're going to have tonight is about our School site plans and um yeah it it's some interesting stuff it's really from a wonky point of view it's it's pretty interesting um and your school of course has a School site plan which which I thought was was really pretty cool so yeah okay yes yeah yeah and and you

can look at board docs if you want and uh it it's one of the board agenda items um go to the secondary one and there there are five of them for secondary you just have to look at yours look for yours it's like I don't know two or three in so they're about 30 or 30 pages a piece but they're pretty interesting so cool thank you Mr Mayfield yes good even it's my pleasure always to introduce the school giving us highlights uh this evening we have principal James McMillan from Los Ranchos Elementary thank you Mr Mayfield and thank you board members it's a pleasure to be able to come and share a quick a quick I promise highlight with you I went very long last year when I did this so my goal uh and

promise is to is to go very fast but don't start the timer yet I need to share my screen first okay I think we've got our Zoomers looking at this now and here we go so I'd like to again thank you for your leadership and it's been great to see you all uh at various events throughout the district from the orientation at the beginning of the year with all the employees and some of you were able to complete a boardwalk on the campus it was great to have you on campus in person and my staff sure appreciated uh being able to see you and share the beginnings of the year I want to share a very exciting event that is happened historically at Los Ranchos and and the families and teachers have grieved among many

other things during the pandemic so uh without further Ado let me share the return of the Los Rancho the annual Los Ranchos Chalk Festival that we do every fall uh and it really stems from a uh a passion for visual art Arts supported by our PTA uh our PTA specifically fund raises to provide 15 visual art lessons to all students in our school uh that this year also includes our TK students which made our art teacher a little nervous but she did great she is doing great so far and uh the um different methods of art uh are are displayed here um and we start by uh taking lessons about how to draw and blend with chalk so that on on a special day in the fall we can have every student as I mentioned

and we're up to 452 which um in in recent context is large for Los Ranchos we're growing quite a bit um every student on the campus walks out in different sessions to the playground and they are given a square and a container of chalk and they make some magic happen of course this wouldn't be uh possible without our many wonderful and very eager to return to Campus Parent volunteers so formally we're we were fortunate to have uh a committee of again very eager 25 formal parents help but I wanted to point out that this um event specifically during the school day and then afterwards in the evening is a great um uh kind of a A lowrisk or I should say a a easy easy way for all parents to become included we had parents

that typically don't show up to many events um come to this event students of parents of students with special needs and and students uh families that might be working but were able to take a quick time off to come and participate the event happens during the day but it leads to a great evening where we do what we call the fall family dinner uh this year we had food trucks arrive on campus um and any families that weren't able to come during the day we invite them to come and mingle and the students have to take them on a tour and uh not only show off their art but tell them uh how they learned how to make the art as well to again emphasize the art lessons uh I did want to bring a

student I invited a student to come up here tonight the student is ill I'm so sorry so instead of a student live um we have a video and a bunch of smiling faces of a video I put together that I'd like to play for you [Music] now [Music] all right hopefully that song isn't stuck in your head on repeat over the night sorry uh thank you very much uh for allowing me to share that uh and and thank you for your leadership of our district what a fantastic District to work in and I look forward to a great year thank you questions are Miss doler Drew well I have said before to you that I'm a great fan of your video some you take amazing videos but to put the uh Spotlight on the kids

I'm just amazed at the talent there it's incredible and we have uh kindergarteners and first graders that know how to produce a piece of art better than probably most of us in the room right now and really a lot there's natural Talent involved but they you know how focused they are when they take an art lesson and they you you teach them one skill and then they go and apply it's a it's a fascinating um example of of of you know I do you do we do and then and then they apply it and and it's great so it is a it is a feel-good event to kick off the school year to be sure uh and it and it leads to Great community at the school so yeah we have some talented artists in

our district definitely thank you other questions or comments for Bard M Mrs frame well two things I wanted to know when you were taking that um video was it by drawn it was by drone that was a CO hobby that I picked up and thankfully convinced the wife to also let me buy the Drone and I promised I would use it professionally as well as personally well the other thing I wanted to mention is is that really what you demonstrated at Los Ranchos and it happens at many of our schools is the importance of of the Arts and that how it lends um for all students a different passion it is a different expression and then it you know BL bleeds over into the classroom so I really appreciate excuse me all of our school

support of of the Arts because it's um it's another important part for all of our students so thank you thanks for mentioning that it allows students to shine sometimes in ways that they aren't able to and it helps them stay connected and motivated you're right thank you and it's going to be interesting to see what happens if prop 28 passes and there's additional Arts uh Arts funding from the state of California I I love the kid that's like spotted the the Drone like that was great um anything else from the board members thank you can I just say just to show how much I love chalk art um I'm having my own pastel painting of U pastel drawing of a Catalina frame for my son and daughter's upcoming anniversary they just C got back from

Catalina so you're gonna get this beautiful drawing I love it I love it thank you thank you very much James we really appreciate it thank you again for having me if any of you have a lead on an art teacher too please send their name our way ours is retiring so we're shaking in our boots because she's been there for a while so okay pass along a name if you have it well thanks okay let's move on to 7.01 correspondence and the board did not receive any correspondence prior to the publication of the agenda so we'll go straight into 7.02 which is public comment as always I'm going to read a statement regarding public comment and then we'll go on from there at this point in the agenda the board welcomes comments on matters of

District interest the board will listen but cannot engage in discussion or take action on items not listed on the agenda generally the section of the agenda is for individuals or representative of a group to address the board on issues not listed on the agenda speakers who wish to discuss items on the agenda are requested to wait until that item comes before the board however comments may be given on agenda items at this time if it's not possible for a speaker to stay until the agenda item is heard by the board if you've submitted written comments on a topic you will not be allowed to also speak on that topic comments or correspondence submitted anonymously will not be accepted uh if there's anybody here who wants to speak in person please submit a yellow public comment

uh moving to item 8.01 business and budget update Mr Pinkerton yeah just a few things to report the the board will see at the bottom an information item tonight on the agenda is the developer fee report and fiveyear study so that's something that has to be posted for 15 days but um we'll be coming at the next meeting we'll actually present that report information and share more about it to the board it it has to be posted for 15 days prior to the board being able to approve it um tonight we're going to talk about safety soon I I had the opportunity to uh go to the student Senate last week and um and realized what it was like to teach again a little bit right and and it it was interesting and that it's

I was amazed at how tired I was at the end of that day right and so it's that you had teachers you know how tired they get um it was a good tired I will tell you and fun to interact with kids um but yeah it it made remember the days being in the classroom and how it's it is it's it's a lot of work a lot you know very tiring um as you go through it so kudos to our staff who do it on a daily basis um our electric bus I think is and we've talked about we got an elect electric bus from the um Air Pollution Control District and set up for a charging station and so it it's amazing at how slow life moves it's so it's taken forever right to

get the hookup for the the bus they're moving forward with it um have everything and it's not on our our side it's just getting the information so um we haven't received the actual bus yet so still waiting on the bus and so when Mr bonnan told me today that we're going to apply for a second bus I said wouldn't it be nice if we had that first bus right to uh to get started but um I'm also going to be attending a school Fleet webinar on Friday so it's something we're definitely invested in want to learn more about and my hope is that the technology the focus um funds will be available through the state so that we can continue to expand our Fleet Mr Buckman I did read I think yesterday that this the

fed's just approved like a billion dollars for electric bus grants so we'll see fingers crossed fingers crossed um and then lastly for me we do have the economic forecast uh on Friday morning and so I know some of the board members will be attending that um they they have given us our own table so um in terms of everyone you know being able to attend you don't have to meet me beforehand and to be able to get in so just a cudos to that and that's that's always a a I would tell for the public too it's a really good event um so they have some really key economic speakers throughout the state federal government that kind of give us a snapshot specifically for the central coast and what the Central Coast um kind of

economic forecast is going to look like in in the the coming year so I look forward to seeing you on Friday morning thanks any questions for Mr Pinkerton right now okay very good uh Mrs Frost 8.02 ed services update yes just a few items from Ed Services first of all this Friday is our secondary staff development day and they'll be um gathering at SLO High all of our secondary schools and you actually got the agenda in your um Friday focus last week we have Dr Michael McDow coming he's going to be working with our secondary sites on Clarity they also are going to have some um opportunities throughout the day to work in departments to collaborate and to meet with colleagues from their other secondary schools so we hope our board members can um join

us for part of the day but 8 to 10 is Dr McDow and we think it's going to be riveting so join us if you can uh this Thursday is also the end of trimester 1 for our elementary schools so they will have an elementary work day which means that they will be working on assessments and gradings and really planning for report cards and conferences which are coming up in a couple of weeks a shout out to Moray high school we have Mr um scaly in the audience tonight uh their Avid Department went on their fall College Tour and they went to CSU Long Beach UCLA Cal State LA and Cal State Northridge and all of their teachers attended so I wanted to mention those names we had Ryan Turner Leah height haiy conin Blair

Brinkman and the career guidance counselor Taylor Lair attended as well and the kids were just thrilled with their time and their visits and it's college application season so what a perfect time for our Avid kids to go on this tour it was really really well received is what I understand and then finally um the IBEW or the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers the pipe trades and many other construction trade unions are partnering with the slow Workforce Development board and the slow County um Office of Education to highlight National apprenticeship week in November it's actually November 14th through the 20th and what it really does is celebrate um industry labor workforce education and government leaders hosting showcases to um kind of look at how important registered apprenticeships are to Career Development to the development of careers

among our students and even kids outside the high school system so we're looking forward to find out what happens November 14th through the 20th okay thank you Mrs Frost um Mr Pinkerton measure D yeah so just a couple things to report to the board uh they did finish the at slow High track um did finish the black areas around the track they're uh supposed to be lining the track kind of that last step so it's completed um Thursday so I'm hoping that the rain isn't um hopefully it's a beneficial thing that it cleaned the track off prior to putting the strip down so we'll we'll see how that goes but that again that's the last step slow High track Moro Bay Jumbotron is on the way um I believe all the uh all the wiring

everything is ready to go so just kind of waiting for that to come in um we'll also be working with moral Bay High on some new stadium lighting um the lighting there because of the weather and the coastal um needs to be replaced so those will be some of the last kind of measure D um clean up items as we uh as we finish up and then um I did want to tell the board that we do have our cboc meeting so we have our citizens Bond oversight committee meeting um is going to be Monday this coming Monday and I'll be reviewing the budgets which I've already reviewed with the board at a study session um as well as sharing you know kind of update on the projects um as we finish up both Comprehensive

High Schools um for the bond I was also fortunate enough to go speak with the uh slow Kanas group um last week and so while I can't advocate for the bond measure C in this case um I was able to talk to them just about why school districts have to go out for measures you know that there isn't a funding really funding mechanism for that um it was a great group uh some you know some of the veteran s Louis you know kind of key key people I think a former long-term coach John Durant was there and the former slow mayor and just some some really icons s L's community and so it was nice to be able to to talk with them and um I did offer to take them on a tour at

any time of of the high school um in St Louis for moral Bay and uh to kind of show them the finished work with measure D I think um you know they they would they were very excited with the fact that what we were doing with the high school and in particular uh Mr D was very excited about the track and the field and U the new stadium okay thank you very much um how about 9.01 approval of the 2022 2023 single plan for student achievement Mr Mayfield yes hello so each year according to California Education Code uh each site has to develop a single plan for student achievement or spsa also known as the sypsa we love our acronyms in education and uh these plans are developed in conjunction with the school site Council

which is made up of generally 10 members uh five of which are School site staff uh and five of which are community members parents uh the majority of the school site staff uh need to be teachers so that would be three out of the five are teachers and then at the secondary level often times students are included in the process as well the single plans are really a living document and they reflect the goals that the board lays out uh our lcap goals and the three main areas are are also the same three main areas that we have uh within our lcap um first best instruction rigorous academic instruction uh support for the um unduplicated students or our most vulnerable students uh subgroup students and then culture of care would be Focus area number three

and what we'd like to do tonight if it's okay with you Mr hunger is have uh a representative from elementary middle and high school so Mrs Miller from sin charmer Elementary uh Mr scaly from moral Bay High and Nathan minart from lagona middle school will come and just give a focus a highlight a spotlight of their single plan for student achievement uh just a couple of minutes to to highlight one particular area and then when the three of them finish as a collective group we'd be happy to take any questions that the board might have would that be okay okay Mrs Miller can you lead us off good evening everyone so I am just gonna highlight here our um focus culture of care Focus number three um and speak a little bit about what we're

doing at Simer in particular but then also I know a lot of our elementary sites are doing similar things as well um so I've made myself a little note sheet here I'm just going to go through that So within our spsa we have some specific areas highlighted um to really hit on that culture of care and how we're building that within our community uh we have a full-time counselor this year which is amazing um we also have what we're calling our mtss Aid this year so we have um a person onite who's working with our mtss program our multi-tiered systems of support program this person runs some counseling groups they run some um social skills groups they also run some academic groups for us so that's been a huge huge piece of our program this

year um something specific to Simer is um we have some ongoing trauma training for our staff and for our teachers and so that came out of some um behaviors and things that we were seeing on campus last year that we really wanted to make sure to address and so our mtss team which is another unique Simer thing that we've put together this year um is really working on how do we educate our staff on appropriate responses to trauma in our students and how do we move forward with that in the classroom as well um we also have our Kinder AIDS this year so I'm sure as all of you know we went full-time with kindergarten and we stagger day with our TK and so that day is a little bit longer than normal as well

um and so we' we have Kinder Aids on campus and we've actually extended that time with our Kinder AIDS a little bit at the beginning of the year just to make sure our Kinder students have that transition into their classrooms and all of that goes really smoothly for them um now that they've been there for a few months we're starting to back that time off and our our students are being you know pretty successful in those Kinder classrooms which has been great to see um at Simer we also have our schoolwide expectations and so everything that we do is kind of rooted in those expectations um take care of yourself take care of this place take care of others and so we have um recognition for our students once a trimester around those expectations our

classroom rules are built around those expectations um and then we also have our mtss program and our check-in checkout built around those expectations as well um we have a program as I said check in check out and so that's kind of a one of our our tier 2 behavior supports on campus to support our students who are struggling behaviorally um and we have a lot of staff that are working with that program to make sure that our students are able to kind of set goals in the morning every day with a trusted adult and then they check in at the end of the day to make sure you know see how they did on those goals how are things going did they meet their goal um what do they need to change for the next

day what do they need to continue for the next day that kind of thing um let's see here we also with the addition of our full-time counselor have added a lot of programs to site this year to really support thatal um focus which has been absolutely amazing so we have schoolwide themes um that change each month um so that's been huge we also have read alouds that go with those themes and our counselor is pushing into every single class and doing monthly read alouds related to those themes um so our our campus is speaking the same language each month which has been really nice um we also have mindful moments every morning along with tips of the week that go along with those themes so our mindful moments are like a meditation time in the

morning um and then our tip of the week goes along with that monthly theme how can you embody being thankful this month for November and our students come up our student council actually comes up with those tips um our counselor is also running social skills groups uh proactively with every single one of our students on campus so that has been a huge shift um prior with only a counselor Insight two days a week that was never an option this year it is an option and so we're really able she's able to get in and get to know every single one of our students um and then again as trimester one ends we can figure out who really needs that continued support and who's doing okay without it um but she's gotten her eyes and gotten

to know every single one of our students T through sixth grade which has been amazing um we've kind of also switched over our yard Duty we're now calling them recess coaches with the idea that we want to coach our students up and we want to teach them those appropriate behaviors and those appropriate responses on campus um so it's been a big shift for us as well but also really helping us with you know lunchtime activities and making sure that our students are engaged in something whether that is something they're playing or it's an art cart that they're working on or it's a card game um so we try to make many options available for students as well um Let's see we also one big thing um culture care just including our family community is making

sure that our teachers send out weekly updates to their families and so that's been happening on campus every week too which has been a really good communication tool and our families feel really engaged in what's happening in the classroom that's my little overview I will pass it off to maybe Nathan thank you all right thank you Jessica so I'm Nathan Miner I'm the principal Laguna middle school and I have a few I'm gonna adjust this episode I to hunch if that's all right U I have a few updates or announcements um to share with you just from rpsa and highlighting a few great things that are school is doing the first of those things that I want to highlight and these are in order just as they appear in the document so there are no

particular order as far as priority um is just looking at the focus that our staff has had since the very first day that we gathered together as staff in our professional development days around our PLC culture as a School site and so we've really spent each of our Monday mornings together in TCT really honing in on developing those teams specifically around our grade level and subject matter teams um and really diving into those four guiding questions for professional learning communities uh which are what do we want all of our students to learn how will we know if they've learned it what will we do if they haven't learned it and then what do we do or how do we extend that learning if they already have shown efficiency or Mastery and as you can imagine

those are really four simple questions that I can say in a few moments and yet have led to hours and hours of really great dialogues among our team and it's been a really fun process for us to dig deep and roll up our sleeves together each Monday morning and really invest our time looking at those questions and how we're supporting our students and what our curriculum and instruction looks like as we do that so that's a little snapshot kind of from the staff perspective of something we're doing um it's been really an energizing thing for many of our staff both as we've had many new staff join us and then also having some really great veteran staff that are a part of these great collaborative teams another thing I want to highlight is our schools

to watch process that our school is currently in the midst of and so we are really focusing on schools to watch as a really a great process that's reflective in nature and gives us a chance as a school to use this great rubric that exists um and looks at four different domains for how we're doing as a school how we as a staff think we're doing and then also we're going to be looking for soliciting feedback from our students and Community as well as part of that process to hopefully create some goals moving forward as a School site for what things we want to be focusing on and continueing to grow in those four domains that we're looking at and we're already into the first couple of those are academic Excellence developmental responsiveness social equity

and then organizational structures and processes and as you can imagine there's a lot of great conversation that happens within that and those conversations are within our Wednesday afternoon staff meetings and have really been beneficial both for me as a new administrator to hear the amazing thoughts and reflections of our team and then also looking with our instructional leadership team for what is that look like moving forward as we look to look at a continuous improvement process at our school and how we can continue to grow as a School site the next thing I want to highlight is our elective program so we had a wonderful opportunity this summer to revamp and adjust some of our electives just as we had some new staff coming on um and so we have this great vision that I

I'm sure all of you aware of of what we want to be doing CTE wise as a school district and how great our CTE programs are at the high school level and really looking now at the middle school level um both as a school district and then also as a state really just wanting to hone in on students at a younger age and we have a few things in place in addition to the elec is I'm going to talk about like our wonderful CTE counselor Jessica Baza who's been amazing in working with our students and building Connections in fact today I had two students come to me and say hey is she on campus today we want to talk to her I was like ah sorry she's not here today um this is one of

her days that she's at lomes but um she's making great connections with a lot of our students and it's really going to lead I think to a lot of students understanding CTE better as they navigate through our school process and as a part of that we've added some great electives that are introducing students to some wonderful experiences at the middle school level so a few of the things that we have that are new this year are engineering class we have both a seventh grade wheel elective which is um students have four quarters of each a different class and then also we are offering it for eighth gr graders as a semester long elective um so the seventh graders are experiencing a flight in space Focus um really connected with some of our Community Partners and

then also the program that we know Questa is building and working on um around aviation maintenance and so really just wanted to start to spark some interest for some of our students in that direction and then our eighth graders are also because they didn't have the class last year also having that exposure and then also learning design and modeling um which is working with both two-dimensional and threedimensional modeling and a variety of applications and so it's really great opportunities for our students to get some really high level experiences and our teacher is an amazing um person who has had lots of experience in Engineering in a variety of ways which is really fun for our students and then along with that another one that's really similar is our computer science class and that's a wheel

option um where many of our students now as seventh graders are being exposed to this concept of computer science and programming as seventh graders um so that when they go to sign up for elective classes as a high schooler they actually know what they're either choosing or not choosing when it comes to those great options of our computer science electives that exist at San lispo high school and so that's a really great program um both of those classes I just mentioned are all three of those different modules are all coming to us through Project Lead the Way is the curriculum we're using which is a really well-known and renowned um curriculum that's used Nationwide that really is promoting our students having these great engineering experiences there's a lot of hands on learning and it's a

lot of fun I've gotten to be in all of those classes multiple times and it is just a blast to see our students building and modeling And discussing and arguing about what will work best as they adjust and Tinker with their projects also along those same CTE lines we also have uh culinary as one of our electives this year and uh it's a a subtle difference from what we've had in the years's past of our home economics focus in that elective um and that's been a really fun adjustment and we've had some great Partnerships already even with having um one of our main kitchens in the district on our campus and getting to partner with them and have our students be a part of making food for special events a couple of times already and

then also being a part of occasionally working with our kitchen staff and internship basis of a two-e rotation to help with the food production and then also learning just some really great foundational skills and preparation for our amazing culinary pathway that exists at the high school and then also we have added an intro to video production class which is again leading into a great program that exists at the high school and that class is now producing our uh news so each day used to um I used to read the announcements over the speaker um in a very classic setting and now students are three days a week receiving video announcements that their peers have made in this class and so students are producing and editing utilizing a lot of technology that I don't even fully

understand and yet they're doing it in a great way um and we have a great YouTube channel that's allowing them to push those out to all of the classes and those are short showed Monday Wednesday and Friday in those first period classes to share with the school what's going on and students are getting great experiences that again are tied in with TNN and some of those other great programs that exist at San louiso High School helping our students learn some foundational skills to be able to use those and then lastly um just want to also emphasize as we're talking about all these great CTE intro experiences for our students that we have for many years had an industrial technology pathway intro at our class at our school that still exists and is thriving where our

students are learning wood shop metal shop skills around welding and working with Woodworking and then also they're actually currently in the computer lab doing some programming with CAD where they're getting an introduction to some design using computers which is a great experience again inuring them to multiple of the different Pathways that exist at San Louis vispo High School to help our students be prepared for College and Career as they move through our system and then I'm going to transition to my last thing and this is something that we're really excited about and was something that I had the unique opportunity to be a part of at San Louis biso high school with Beth Meyer as well and that is that our school is also implementing EL support plans and these plans are really a targeted

intervention for our English Learners where the goal is and we're in the process of this goal currently is to develop a really clear plan for every single one of our English Learners where we lay out the data on what they how they are currently performing based on lpac and and a variety of means of where they're at and their skill levels for listening Reading Writing and speaking and then also after looking at where they currently are laying out what their goals are what their next steps are as far as they their continued progress in their language fluency and then lastly providing a list of reasonable accommodations for our staff to be aware of and for the student to be aware of of how we can provide appropriate scaffolding for them to take next steps one

of the challenges with our students that are English Learners is that each of them is at a unique spot and sometimes a staff it's difficult to know exactly what that looks like if you're not an expert and so we're seeking to create a system where there's clear communication with everyone involved of this is where that student is a great snapshot and then here are the ways that you can support this student in their journey and here are their next steps that we're hoping that they take and really seeking to be targeted with those students and our amazing El coordinator is also meeting with each student individually as these plans are developed to talk with them about what those goals are and collaborate with them on that as we also are sending those home and sharing

those out with teachers and so that's a really exciting thing again in process it takes a lot of time to develop this for all of our English learning students and yet we really believe that it's a valuable tool that will help our teachers be more targeted in their supports for that group of students as they continue to develop proficiency and move towards redesignation which is the goal for all of them so I believe I've hit on all the things I plan on saying any questions before I move on and hand it off to Mr scaly I have one I just want to it's not really a question but I just want to say I love seeing the vision that the the district has for the expansion of the CTE program coming to fruition it's like

you know think it and then it's happening it's wonderful to see the realization of what we saw as being beneficial to the students and I'm sure that because of this Middle School involvement it's good for the students and they'll be able to complete more of the paths I bet our percentage of path completions are going to go way up Spike way up when they get to high school yeah agreed sorry just talking to myself um I'm very taken with the fact that the students are doing the news in the morning um and I'm also been told that we have homes where families may not be able to that they're basic there's basic illiteracy among the adults um and so my my thought is is there may be a way to sort of bring these two

things together sending paper home and or having you know it online in homes that really you know people are not using the computer stuff's not getting read is my concern so now we have this stability to record maybe a YouTube channel I'm I'm really excited about the what's what I'm hearing here is the the opening and the ability for a parent to just sign in go oh there's the parent newsletter that's being read by my child or somebody else's or you know I can get stuff audio or visual so I'm just wondering I'm just seeing some kind of Link here that that may be pretty exciting for parents and for the for the district in fact even busy parents might want to listen to it in the car rather than go home and read it

so anyway I was really exciting to hear that it's now at the at the middle school yeah all kinds of great opportunities as you implement more Tech technology experiences for students absolutely well thank you all I appreciate the time and Mr scaly you're up Mr minart thanks for rocking at lagona uh it's awesome having been there for eight years before I went to moral Bay it's just wonderful to hear all the great things that are going on hey I just want to give you an update Alana missed for a reason we're winning 14 to one in first round of playoffs at the water polo I just got a text from my athletic director uh I'm going to I'm going to try to be brief because that's what we try to do but we try to

be thorough so the first focused area is academic gains through rigor relevance and engaging uh instruction and curriculum and I'm just going to focus on one thing which which our whole district is and that's around teacher Clarity those questions of students when I walk into a learning environment and say hey what are you learning why are you learning it how will you know when you've learned it making teacher Clarity and really a discussion of instruction and learning the core focus of our act Monday time has been our goal at moral way zero distractions and and as a School site principal you'd be surprised how many people say just do that during act time no it's sacred that we just talk about teaching and learning instruction not even curriculum instruction that impacts learning and how do

we measure that impact that's what a professional Learning Community does those four questions that Mr mhart spoke up and so we've been we've been Resolute we do nothing on Mondays but focus on teaching and learning uh our teachers just finished just finished a min any learning Sprint uh we discussed that uh yesterday morning and we're super excited for for this Friday with Dr McDow uh he talks a lot about learning Sprints is where you as an instructor you try a new teaching practice that you want to focus in on you think will be impactful you measure that impact and you come back and report to your team what happened you usually do it in a two to four week Sprint so we did a mini one as a practice to build towards this so that's

that's just focus area number one Focus area number two is the same thing but really a focus on our lcap student groups and so first one is AVID uh we worked hard to carve out an extra period for Blair Brinkman she's our AVID coordinator she has a prep period she she's the reason or that that is a large reason that we had such a successful trip for our students to those four universities and that she was able to find former moral Bay High students to lead us at each each one of those universities uh it was really exciting because Eric Torres graduated last year and he's he's a freshman at Northridge and he you know most our Avid kids know Eric because he was an avid kid um also our Avid teachers went to Fresno

State to go to the California or the CSU high school counselor conference because they want to know everything a high school counselor should know because that's what they're preparing kids for to launch directly to a four-year and so there's Abid uh the next one is ELD we were lucky enough to hire a veteran uh she she taught uh for decades in the San Wen Valley she retired and we hired her part-time and she's teaching our ELD section her name is Peggy Lima and she's amazing and we also carved out an extra section for study skills for ELD Learners and these are for our kids that have really been usually in our school system for less than seven years so just an extra opportunity for us to impact them in a positive way and the third

one uh is that uh for our students with disabilities we didn't have a a really specific steady skills class for those kids that need Executive functioning skills and practice and so we were able to carve that out of our master schedule and so that's Focus area to Avid ELD study skills for students with disab abilities uh three culture of care Gayla training super grateful for Gayla pride of San Lis abiso to come and uh do four trainings with us thank you Eve Dober Drew she came out last week for our second training we have two more to go uh I won't hog This One S Louis high is doing the same thing we're super excited Roland and I are very excited to have our staffs experience this one uh so I'm moving on the next

thing I want to highlight which you wouldn't think would' be major but it is we're already seeing the impact Taylor Lair is our College in specialist and she was 80% and we moved to get her to be 100% it's been fantastic she was she went on our trip with our Avid students she's amazing the feedback we've gotten already in our surveys and our listing sessions is kids are excited about the opportunities that she pushes out and communicates around current volunteer and job opportunities the CTE opportunities that are post high school and certainly the ability to to uh get to a college Andor University she's just lights out she's already working to revamp our local scholarship application to make sure it's more approachable for more of our students so we do a better job of supporting

them financially post High School uh the last thing that I want to talk about is our youth TR survey and our student Senate last year they were really adamant about wanting to change the culture of our school and they didn't really want me or us to do it I really wanted to have an assembly even in May and they they they literally begged me not to we need to do this this need to be student driven and so they've been they've been working hard as a group schoolwide then to student Congress and now to to a smaller group in creating a student value statement from morobe high school and they're almost done with the process and the process has been wonderful I'm super excited to see our kids do that and be inclusive and thoughtful

about it and that's what I have to share thank you for the opportunity great thank you um yall don't go too far I'm sure there will be questions for everyone I've got a question for Scott if I can hey Scott come on back yeah I'm just gonna make you get up and down fine with um in in your in your report there was um provide increased parent literacy engagement activities at both Elementary and secondary schools um that was part of Mr Mayfield's um section um I'm wondering at Mor Bay are you doing literacy nights or stuff with parents or how's that working one of the biggest things is it it it really threads to our elac uh we're lucky that we have two Superstar parents uh I think I can mention them publicly Rosio Hernandez

and then uh Nell CH uh they've been amazing in getting huge groups of folks to come to our school and then us responding to what their needs are literacy is one of them but um to be honest their their biggest things on their list are we want to know more about Aries and how it functions and we want and we want to know we want to know more about uh Questa college and university a through G and financial aid and so th those have been the cores of what they've requested from us in general so that's kind of been our Focus responding to their needs and that's the parents and so that's the parents I want say we had over we had over 20 at our El meting I I thank you that's that's great

any other questions I'm happy to jump up and down but I'm also anything for Mr scaly this is an action item and so I am going to go to the go to the public in just a moment um Miss Dawson is there anyone from the public that would like to address us on this item okay Mr Mayfield you want to come on back up and we I'm sure we have questions and comments from board members so Mrs frame will start with you yeah um this is really um related to Mr Maya what you said about you know directing com waiting until the presentation so a waited the presentation so a couple things I I wanted to uh comment on one was um in reference to um Simer and your um the mention about um recess

uh recess coaches and what I was wondering is and it really speaks to what Mr mhart was talking about in schools to watch how much collaboration between sites because there's some really um amazing things that are happening at our sites and you know like the term recess coaches and and you know losos middle school has been doing schools to watch and then there's these CTE opportunities so how much collaboration that meta collaboration you know there's within sight and then how much collaboration happens so that all these great things um that are happening individual sites get shared y you know between sites what does that process look like that's great great question um I would say that it's an accordian process back and forth um everybody hears about what everybody else is doing they're on the

phone immediately Mr Black tell me a little bit more about this project I heard about that you guys are up to over there at our principal meetings we're now lucky to be back in person and so we have a lot of time for principles to talk uh interact to share ideas um I've never seen a more collaborative group uh and I remember way back when it wasn't that collaborative is schools operated more kind of in silos and I would say now there's a lot more of principles talking together collaborating together sharing ideas uh oftentimes we'll talk about hey who's got a great idea about this particular thing uh or if I'm out at a school site and hear about something I'll share it with other principles and then they connect uh to share ideas so

I would say that there's a lot of collaboration amongst all of our principles K12 okay okay that was that was really because as I was listening to these individual you know presentations by schools and reading through those plans it's that process of you know they're all our students and what one school is doing if another school can you know for the benefit of everyone it's a so I'm glad to hear about that collaboration between our sites and thank you and then sometimes for certain uh initiatives the timing isn't right for one site where it is for another leader and me would be a perfect example of that so Monarch Grove began with leader and me uh then it expand has expanded to a couple of other sites but then certain sites said you know the

timing isn't right for us to do that initiative this year we're going to focus instead on these one or two or three things so okay yeah I go ahead Eve I wanted to say sorry I didn't follow your for format of waiting to the very very very end but at least I didn't interrupt anybody right right all right so um but I I did have a question as I prepared myself for the board meeting and I went through all of the the things that pertain to the lcap as the board had helped to mold that and envision it and one is under um specifically if I can get very specific about it I have a question under 3E which reads develop Equitable and inclusive practices for all students and staff to include parent education opportunities

this peace with the parents has always been of utmost important to a number of us and I'm one of them and um so in particular here it says provide opportunities for parents to participate in diversity and inclusive presentations and activities I was wondering would may be able to have a portion or some part of the Gayla um presentation presented to them that six hours of presentation is changing the culture of the school and the parents need to be a part of that yeah I think that's a great idea and we have in the past included different parent workshops uh we generally don't invite parents into staff meetings obviously that's an in-house kind of training or discussions that take place uh but there are great opportunities to reach out to parents uh currently we're doing things

through daac uh we have um a parent presenter who presents in Spanish to our daac on different strategies that parents can use uh on social emotional learning uh habits and things like that but we have done uh Wy presentations with parents in the past and I think having Gayla present to our parents would be a great idea I I really do because otherwise um there are Concepts I mean this is new right it wasn't there when I was teaching a few years ago or a parent raising a child in the school system so I feel like it's such a new area that we want to be as transparent as we can about the the laws there are many laws that are backing up the training and I feel like that we all need to know

what those are so that there won't be any um um well U uh missteps shall we say missteps in approaching certain people you know among the population so we just I feel like it's the parent education is very important so thanks for answering that I would agree and I would say that the issues aren't new these have been happening amongst our student body for a long period of time and and what is relatively new is the training of all staff so that they can help to support that's exactly what I'm saying that's new the culture of care is new the training top down is New Right relatively speaking Yeah I think so thank you bet anybody else Mark sure um I've got about 10 questions so I'm GNA just be I'm just going to ask

a few at a time I want to just reiterate what I've been saying lately um I have read every one of these I have reached out to staff um these are questions that I think I haven't had enough answers on or that I think I maybe should be said so that the public can also sure hear these so just in at one of the schools one of the elementary schools it says that they're serving free breakfast lunch and dinner I don't know whether that was a typo but there's only one school that said that are we offering somehow free dinners yeah I think there is this the a food to go and I know I've seen it at the at the um sports program because I've been a I'm a driver for the sports program

I don't okay know that but that's part of my job description and I love it but uh the students there's a food service worker there at the gate as the kids leave in the in the afternoon and they have the option to uh pick up food to go and you know we give sites discretion to include you know the things that they want to include that are happening at the site my guess would be it's happening in a lot more sites than than than decided to included in the SPF I'm really excited because I thought it was just somebody doing pre lunch and dinner and their fingers did it so I think that that's that's great um when I was looking at these each site has the ability to so the SSC um shares it

with groups and on almost all of them it was shared with the elac and then I'm guessing we don't have like gifted and talented at each site and and but then it had other and I was I was surprised that that um or maybe you can help me understand ptas were not asked you know to review it um asbs were not asked to review it and there's just a lot of other organiz you know organized groups that we have on campus is that just too unwieldy well I I think it's not it's a matter of Legally we we required required to have a School site Council and they approved the actual plan and help develop the the plan and then evaluate the plan in Spring I would say the goals of the school of the

uh single plan for student achievement are shared schoolwide and they're shared with parents at back to school night and they're shared with ptas uh perhaps not every line item of the spsa but certainly the main school goals and functions and activities uh and I know Mrs Miller for example shares a lot of the associal emotional learning activities that are happening through her parent newsletter that type of thing but generally not to those groups as an entire document yeah okay that's great um this a little I may have been misreading this but as I was going through there was there's one section on cast CA n GSS it's the science test California science test yeah thanks and um and I noticed it appeared to me that didn't matter what school what grade level that we we're

looking at about maybe 40% of the kids meeting are exceeding did I read that correctly I mean almost the same number across the district yes I would say that that's accurate uh we presented uh cast information in the original uh esac or CP presentation and we'll be returning with more information on the cast Okay in December when we present the countywide and Statewide uh results and we can go over that that that science information detail I look forward to that because I was just I was thinking for us that seems like a low percent okay I'm going to back off Chris in case somebody else has some questions well I I have some comments but I'm going to let you finish Mark then then go for it because you're gonna take time now or you're

gonna take time later so might as well go for it now and then I'll sure give my comments um we have um several sections in here where it says um it's like a 3B and it says work with to improve strengthen learning for El students for example um but when I looked at the subgroups it it's the s kids that are just you know 10 20% achievement and I understand that the schools were closed for two years and I get that um so would would there be some way or would you would you think it would be possible or necessary to have like a three 3 D and it's strengthened um learning for SED students and is it is it a funding thing or is it just a subgroup thing it's certainly not a funding

thing I mean we we look at the data and and from the data identify the students that have the need and then those students are provided with whatever intervention uh they happen to need so if it's reading our multi-tiered system of support interventions uh at the elementary level meet those kids need they they might be uh economically disadvantaged and El uh you know but it wouldn't just be work we're only going to help El in this regard we're only going to help SED in this regard it's mostly what do the data say who needs help and then we provide uh services and help to those kids uh Education Code requires that certain services are provided to English learners for example uh and title one would say you provide these Services as well to economically disadvantaged

okay um I just go with this I noticed um and it may come up in the I inovate per but it was also mentioned a lot of the schools are talking about uh I think it was guaranteed eight times a week in in an iovate lab for every student on campus I think that's the number it doesn't matter there was a certain guaranteed amount of time and and I'm just thinking Some of our sites Pacho has what 500 students now on campus a and it's and it has one I inovate lab yeah and another School site might have 250 and they have one I inovate lab and some just wondering whether that I innovate folks or somebody can think about you know the ratio of I innovate openings and ability to use it to the

ra to the number of students on campus because otherwise we're g it's just disproportional I'm going to bring these other ones um to you and Diane and Leslie and sit down and talk some more about it thanks okay thank you um I was really interested in uh Mr Miner's report about um the CTE opportunities for middle school students and um the way that those will um begin of a a path for students as they move um into high school and I'm wondering I mean intro to CAD for seventh and eth graders isn't that amazing um culinary it's just there's there's a lot uh being provided to middle school students a lot more than just the wheel and so I'm wondering I was unclear though during your presentation if students elect to take these electives are

they then for going part of the wheel or are they considered part of the wheel great question so for seventh graders the those courses are included in the wheel The Culinary the engineering course and the um computer science course and so students are actually who are in the wheel are experiencing most of those so we actually have five different things in the wheel and students only get to see four so there are some experiences that some students may not have but any student who signed up for our wheel elective will have exposure to most of those experiences which is really great obviously we have a few year-long electives that seven SKS might be in like band or Avid which are also amazing programs or choir um where those students wouldn't have that opportunity to experience

those CTE intros and then for eighth graders after they've had those intro four wheel opportunities then they get a chance to select an elective that's a semester long and we'll kind of get to dive deeper into that same subject or a different one um but most eth Getters tend to pick something that is directly related to what their wheel options were although again we have multiple yearlong electives for eighth graders like Spanish and some other really great things um that some of them choose to choose instead of a semester long um experience that kind of mimics or follows after the wheel experience okay thank you and Mr Bloom is not here to speak for himself but but um would you know are the same opportunities being provided at lososo Middle School yeah it's a great

question I could speak to that uh working with Mr Bloom he's um actually promoting Esports as a an opportunity elective opportunity CTE specific um and as we start to build Out Mr O Conor did you say esort Esports yeah Esports I yeah electronic Sports electronic Sports it's actually a multi-million dollar industry and is probably one of the fastest growing industries that um have employment opportunities for uh lots of young people um and so it's an area that uh Mr Bloom has really leaned into and we're supporting through our Middle School CTE grants um and as we start to build out what we're doing in the city and on the coast we're seeing more and more funding as Mr Miner talked about being moved toward the middle schools um and I think it was another question

that came up earlier the opportunity for students to be able to enter that path way earlier in Middle School will allow our students to have more access and opportunity as they go into high school to complete Pathways and that was a a statement or question and uh we're here to support Los Osos Middle School in that Pursuit as well so building out the four-year plan for high school which we're doing now um at the end of 8th grade uh the students this is all fresh in their minds and they can then plan accordingly for their High School experience um and if they found something they dipstick something in middle school that really grab them they can go forward with it they know how to move forward with it in high school yeah it goes back

to the greater Vision linking high school middle school and Upper Elementary grade six-year plan putting a vision to to action um making sure that students have access to the Career Technical education the career kind of thought process um Mr Miner referenced having a bilingual Middle School career counselor Miss Baza um having in our schools to watch at middle school and then really addressing the opportunity for students who are entering High School to have a real idea of what they want to experience in high school careerwise and then having access to that and if that can begin in middle school so be it in seventh grade in a wheel class in eth grade in a semester long class and again we've talked about the opportunity for students to perhaps complete that introductory class for a CTE

pathway maybe coming out of high Middle School rather than waiting all the way to high school to be able to take it any opportunity we can we're going to take and leverage that that's terrific thank you um then I in going through the plans what I did notice and and which is the same thing that I always notice and I don't know what the answer to it is but in terms of um different schools ability to fund raise for a supplementary um exper things and experiences for the students um there is just such a um a difference between our schools and their abilities to fundraise uh their parent groups and again that was apparent in going through these plans so call attention to it but I I don't have the answer for how we change

it um that's it for me thank you elyn hi um couple of things I wanted to um let's see Mrs Rogers you were talking about something and my mind went somewhere else I guess what I was thinking is you were um talking Mr oconor about um and Mr Miner when you were talking about the CTE these incredible opportunities that we're looking at and we're starting at an um early age and and some students will have this exposure how do we address um and the the issue of those students that because they have a conflict a scheduled conflict either because they have a study skills class or Avid so they don't have that exposure to get onto that pathway to get onto that CTE do we how do we begin to you know provide that you

know equitable access because those are the very I mean we want all students to have this access but those students who um you know either you know they're they're they're taking this great Avid class but you know then they don't have this other access how do we I guess how do we address that yeah it's a great question I I think about the work that Mr Miner is doing already with almost an individual learning plan for El students um but more importantly all of our counselors and our administrative teams working with their teachers to actually know each and in individual student and you're going to have to make those determinations student by student um it may be a situation where a student may need that support for a short period of time in language arts

or in math or fill in the blank but at the same time balance that out by giving them an opportunity to experience an enrichment opportunity in the wheel or maybe a semester long class but I think the short answer is actually knowing the needs of each individual student and I would say that our middle schools and our high schools really Pride themselves on working through that with the school counselors and the admin team as well okay and a second question I had is when you were talking about um the different schools and and middle schools and I guess this um goes to high schools how are these Pathways determined and what I mean is are they generated by um student interest parent interest staff you know you mentioned Mr Bloom is doing the Esports and

did that was that kind of an organic process that students and you know with Mr Miner engineer how do those um how are those highlighted and how do they um generate and can Schools are they flexible you know that you have this one group of students and maybe they're interested and then you've got you know years down the road and so how does that work a great question there's there's many things that come to mind first and foremost it's predicated a lot of times on the uh credentialing enough the teacher or the Personnel that you have available um second piece that comes to mind is looking at our funding mechanism and can we um support not just the Personnel piece but how can we buy the materials and the supplies and the infrastructure and through

measure d uh we've been able to do that certainly at the high school level but a third piece of the puzzle would be to look at um something that's coming out of our work with the foundation and the elementary I innovate we have a a targeted group of students that are coming out of our elementary schools um thirsty for more engaging opportunities in middle and high school and then the final piece is looking at what comes to mind is like I think it's the reach 2030 jobs um for the slow County and the region and looking at where are the jobs of the future and we need to be able to Pivot in high school and middle school to figure out what could those new job opportunities be Mrs Roger said did you say Esports

if we' have said orts like probably five six years ago we'd probably be definitely scratching our head but think about that like we're now seeing new positions evolving that we've never thought about before if you think about wind and solar and um other green energies I can see how we can move in that direction as well when you think about travel and tourism it would only be wise for us to start to think about culinary as a possible opportunity you think about uh engineering and the partnership opportunities with local business in our area it's a natural fit and so we have to think regionally and within the state of California and that has an impact on what courses we need to offer to be honest we we we have to kind of pick our head

up and think what's the big picture and what's our vision for this and then how can we solve that puzzle around our personnel and when there's an opportunity to add Key Personnel let's be ambitious and go out and find them thank you you're welcome so a few more um I'm going to focus a little bit on money but before I before I do that in when I looked at the students responses there was a survey I guess and when I looked at the students responses the sense almost every single one of them talked about bullying um and so is is there a bullying problem or is there a perception of bullying problem and are we addressing it because I mean it was like every single School site yeah uh you know it's a sweeping statement

I think Middle School and High School from a secondary perspective it's it's a it can be tough um perception reality um I think we were having a conversation today where people feel on edge kids feel on edge um I would I would think that we would say that we've always had issues with bullying in schools and it doesn't discount the fact that we haven't address them it's just it's brought to light so much more each and every day uh technology has a role to play in that good and bad um are we addressing it absolutely do we talk a lot about it um are kids aware of it yes um but that social engagement is part and parcel of middle and high school and we have to coach our kids and teach our kids and

educate them around that social contract and how to be able to get along um and it's a process uh it's that continuum of learning so yes do students have that as an experience absolutely do we address it absolutely um but that's the culture building you you heard from two of our secondary principles tonight um but I would say from a secondary perspective you're hearing and seeing a lot of linkage a lot of collaboration a lot of thought process about best practice that's common throughout all of our secondary schools and obviously in our middle school and elementary schools as well so we're trying um but we're also coming out of a pandemic and we're also coming out of a situation where kids are having lots and lots of issues within our society as a whole not

just within our own School District but as a society and we're trying to address those and adults are having those same issues to be perfectly Frank and uh it's a work in progress yeah the only thing the only thing that I would add is just that um because we're coming out of this pandemic and kids haven't had a chance to be around each other it's more socialization issues as opposed to bullying I mean bullying has a very definite definition and oftentimes people say I'm I'm being bullied and well it's not exactly that but never have we spent more time and I would say K12 on helping kids to socialize and get along and teaching them strategies uh uh through social emotional learning uh just on how to take care of themselves and how to take

care of those uh then never have we spent as much time as we are now okay so I'm not I I really thankful that you guys are on top of it it it's great when I was going through this um Lottery funds were mentioned at one site and so that made me start to think so we set aside Lottery money every year and I know more than one site so is how is that distrib what's the distribution where does it go Mr Pinkerton can give us some great details but we have we have set aside Lottery funds for textbook adoption over the years that's been a big uh port portion of the money we have to purchase supplemental teex regular adoption materials uh and that type of thing and a small portion of that is

assigned to sites for photoc copying and it's not enough money to pay to renovate all of our school sites just so you know that that was one of the misnomers that I had to talk to the quanas about like what about the lottery doesn't it just pay for everything no it doesn't um it it's really is directed from curriculum on your end in terms of what schools need and that can vary year to year some sometimes you need a certain amount of books for one grade level class I think um recently English right a lot of lot of textbooks coming you know in that area um and so they quickly went through their Lottery funds this year I will tell you that and uh it's something that we keep in a rears right so I

I guess for me it was like when I read that in one report it was you know I just thought there might be mentioned in others [Music] um when some of our schools are title one I mean like hundreds of thousands of extra dollars and some are not and and it I I don't so the title one dollars are making a difference at those sites are is it monitored something somehow and if we had more money at every site obviously they would do better but absolutely monitored yeah it it's uh every single requisition uh that is and every dollar spent on title one is approved uh through our office instructional Services uh there's a specific list of things that that money can be spent on but primarily it's for intervention books instructional materials that type

of thing uh it can be spent on people but usually to provide uh additional support for intervention and that type of thing a conference attendance professional development it can be spent on as well this through the single plans for student achievement all of the title one money is accounted for in each of those six Title One sites uh at elementary and so I I appreciate that accountability I'm sorry I was on a different different version of accountability so in terms of supporting its impact on educate like this I'm sorry accountability for the outcome so our is can we actually see learning related to those dollars yeah I believe so yeah okay and and we evaluate the single plans every year the School site Council does and then the principal does an additional evaluation of those

plans before the new plans are developed for the new year with the new School site Council because the members do change every year within that team one last money question um right along at the end where it talks about the the amount of title $1 it also talks about District's contribution and across the board it was about $50,000 I I know we're sending more money than that to each school so is this specifically certain things that the money in these in the Spas can track and you're referring to Title One money specifically no I'm so title one's here but at the end of each of the reports it would also talked about District money fund money general fund money yes and it was $50,000 pretty much average across the district it it's done by a

number of students and that money in general is to support um the basic instructional materials so photo equipment pencils paper that type of thing so the majority of that money is spent on instructional materials right as you know being a basic Aid District uh and we're extremely supportive of our schools what we tell them pretty much at every meeting is if you have need come and talk to us we'll find a way to make it happen thank you I app Mrs shepher thank you just a couple of things um I wanted to just um point out two things I I think one is that uh this as we all are aware I think every one of us here read the sipsas and be from it's great reading material um takes me back to my uh

site counsel days of uh reading them for for every every school my kids were in um but I wanted to point out that that I know we're all aware that the achievement Gap continues to exist and has been hard hit uh by the pandemic the gains we were hoping to achieve were set back a little bit I think because of that but it will be interesting uh to take a look back back with the goals and expectations and hopes and dreams of every site to see what what we've been able to do this year um when with all of that set out what what is hoping to be gained and with regard to some of the I'm I also am of course excited to see the classes at the middle school level I think one

of the things um a a word that I was grateful to hear that Mr OK Conor used was enrichment um it it I I'm troubled sometimes I know that all our students are going to need jobs when they get out of school they're all going to need to make their way in the world but hearing everything in terms of CTE you know career career career when they're 12 is troubles me at times and so I appreciate the chance the the opportunities the kids can have to as we the term we seem to use a lot of dipstick to try something out to experiment you know one of my lofty goals is that we're creating citizens of the world and so these are going to be our students who have a depth and breadth of knowledge

and appreciation of many facets of their educational and academic and social experiences so um rather than um thinking that if a if a student chooses to take a culinary class in middle school that that student will continue all the way through high school and and or end up at the Questa Aviation mechanics class or something that that were just providing these opportunities for them to expand their worldview and to know what opportunities may be out there so I tend to think of it a little more in as in that way but I do understand that we're we're guiding them uh towards their their Futures whatever those that may look like yes Miss dobler Drew yes I remember on the boardwalk at maral Bay with Mr scaly we went into the CTE and I mean these

are amazing state-of-the-art machines you know and they have every kind of 3D printer not one you know they have several different kinds for different purposes and different inks are used and so forth and if you call it ink but anyway Mr scaly introduced me to a young man there who proceeded to be a leader and show us around the facility he he obviously is an abstract thinker but he en he enjoys combining the Hands-On learning experience after all calply is learned by doing and very Hands-On oriented as a CSU so it it It just fits right in I think with the education of the future and I was just very excited to see how excited the students were about being able to be in such a facility as that I think they feel very honored

and um uh they I think they think school is cool because of that well this is an action item but before we I ask for a motion oh I'm sorry Miss frame go ahead I just I had a just a a a brief question you know as I was reading through the plan um Mr Mayfield and you know they be they began to all blur you know certain point but I was um you know I noticed are are all our schools and they they they work so hard are they all able to provide um you know a lot of them through the P do they does each elementary school have um the Arts um being funded by you know that artist and residence program I I read through many of them and they had that

but I just one of those things that you know Mr Sheffer has often spoken of is making sure all of our Stu students have that breath but do they all have that opportunity to have that enrichment they do and I and I would say that the majority of schools have an artist in Residence as Mr McMillan U mentioned earlier and a certain number of classes are provided uh it you know we could always improve that it could always be more uh but I would say the bigger challenge is just finding the time within the day to make it all happen but Arts are certainly at the top and that's why it's included in the single plans Arts is absolutely there at every school okay thank you thanks um and I just I just want so

I appreciate the Esports and how exciting that is and all these new jobs but I also just want to there's a ton of old stuff old school stuff like my son's a carpenter he's like in huge demand makes pretty good money and he's not even Union I mean he's just picking up jobs where he can so I mean there's the pipe fitters we have to have all those before we almost can have up because we we have to have that infrastructure so I appreciate that we're all but we're also preparing them for the you know jobs that that already exist and and that we continue to need the other thing it's a thought I just sort of just had this thought um we talk about the co loss and you know and I mean it

hurt like heck to you know to close to put the kids at learning at home and the teachers on the screen and um and sometimes I feel like we think about it as if it was it's a one-off like covid happened and now you know it's never going to happen again so I I took a look I mean it's like if we look at pandemics and endemics I mean it's the Black Death syphus tuberculose small pox yellow fer it's like just every 500 years or so um it's just something just wipes us out and so I understand that it set us back but I also think we handled it really well and I know that you guys you guys and everybody else it's we'll be fine but it's just just not the last time it's

going to happen um so I I I I hear about the and I hear about the co loss and I'm just I think we did the right thing so okay so I have a couple of things um first of all I maybe not Mark are you done let me ask you the question okay good because now I'm taking my turn um I I for for the public anybody that's listening um this this is really extensive undertaking I know for the board members it was about at least 400 pages of reading and um there I I will give kudos to you folks who have designed this because what we're what I'm seeing now as opposed to what I saw a number of years ago were sort of standardized School site plans uh really focusing in on

specific goal areas which I don't think we necessarily saw before I think everybody was on their own so I I first of all I want to congratulate everybody for that and I think I I it it seems to me that that you all got together I'm looking at the administrators now you all got together and you said these are some things that look really good that we as administrators can share for our schools and then these are other things that are specific to our sites um and that's really the purpose of the spsa I think um it is a gold mine it is absolutely a gold mine the the uh the the achievement data is revealing um on many levels and I think as someone mentioned and you know I probably will repeat what other

board members have talked about but Clear and Present achievement Gap you know um some schools are able are closing it a little bit better than others seems like everybody's working their way toward that but that is one of as you all know that's one of the goals of the board and I'm glad to see that that has been translated into the school site plan and I'm assuming that it's as as I know it's being also uh subsumed into our lcaps as well super important something I think that I'd like and that I think I understand um but I think would be good for the public to understand is the what the MDT mdpt is um and why those scores are so low and and what that tells us um and you know why it's not

push the panic button because those scores are low and then I've got a couple other things to talk about too yeah I'll make one comment about uh what you said about alignment so it's been a mantra of Dr praders from the beginning for us to do our best work to be the most powerful that we can be as an educational institution we need to be aligned School sites all the way up to the board level so that's why he helps all of you determine what the goals are for the year and the spring and then those are put into the uh single plans for uh achievement student achievement and then School sites can set their goals accordingly so the money goes to where the goals are we're aligned as an organization from the school board

all the way down to the school site and that allows us to do our best work um it also allows us to do professional development across all sites because we do have common things that we do but then give sites the autonomy that you pointed out Mr [Music] as a diagnostic tool and you've heard Mr storm talk earlier about Universal screener we use that as a math Universal screener and so our our teachers are looking to find where are students strong what do they know it relates back to what Mr Miner talked about how do we know what students are learning and how do we address where they have gaps um it helps guide that instructional pedagogy and practice as well um we talk about learning Sprints with Dr McDow and we talk about our

work around professional learning communities and Clarity when we give a second iteration of the mdtp we'll give that in January um it's not exactly that learning Sprint that we would be looking for ideally it would be about a month apart or maybe a little less but the mdtp if given and analyzed by the teacher with regard to the student data it allows us to know what that learning has looked like over that period of time and where are still some gaps for our students when we give the mdtp at the end of the school year in some instances we were using it as an assessment for placement purposes in our accelerated math programs at Middle School um it's important for us to understand and to realize that when we're working with our students and our

community we have to communicate the importance of every assessment and at the same time we have to take a step back and look at and self-reflect on where are the student is at in the learning process so that's a little bit of the snapshot of mdtp right my understanding is that it's it's sort of a a Readiness check that's I think as you put it a diagnostic tool um not a not a you know a summative evaluation which I guess really the esack would be so so it's it's one of those pieces that we hope in uh inform forms instruction I think is is what you're saying it's a classic example of formative versus summative I mean summative that autopsy it's a little bit late the patients died as opposed to the format of okay

this is a check in here's where we're at in the process so some other things that occurred to me just um I as as I'm reading through this I'm seeing really the the incredible amount of support that the district is giving to the school sites and you know a lot of what I'm seeing in the spsa is the name ' Conor and Mayfield you know some some Frost some Frost some G um but but a lot of you guys and I and I wanted to to call out just the that amount understanding that approximately 85 to 87% of our budget personnel and so we're really trying to spend the rest of that you know 13 to 15% on on You Know The Hardscape stuff that we need to use um I was really impressed with

just the work from the parent groups and the the amount of the amount of funding that the parent groups give um it's it's super important lots of attention to CTE we talked aled about that especially at the secondary schools really as Mrs Sheffer said the need for vapa which as I mentioned before should be helpful if prop 28 passes I'm not sure as a basic a school district whether we'll get funding or not from that Mr Pinkerton shaking his head that would be nice you know we're talking at least a billion dollars from the state on that that would be really cool um I think that as Mr Buckman pointed out I think we have some need to really continue to focus in on our science instruction you know um and and and I think

that's going to be one of those balancing acts you know um how do we integrate science into our English language arts our math all those kinds of things I saw some great stuff going on at Lois Middle School the other day um but uh so you know obviously the cast results aren't what we would like to see and how do we you know how do we squeeze that into everything else we're doing um you know again just we see these these achievement gaps some some worse than others you know some some of the testing shows larger discrepancies than others which I think is kind of interesting uh um I was really impressed to see that that all of the schools are looking at um are looking at what I would call social emotional learning but

to see like uh leader and me moving through the different schools and if schools aren't using that then what are they using to really try to engage their students in that and I think that started at Monarch Grove I believe did it not not start under your your principal ship Mrs storm um and to see that really working hard in the schools but Mr Buckman did mention the title one money it it is significant for those title one schools and that's why um for anybody who might be listening it's so important for parents to fill out those um those those statements from the district which are completely confidential because it absolutely is money that goes back to your schools um I was impressed by seeing things like Hands-On electives at Pacific Beach um you know

that that was pretty cool when I read that and understanding that they're hiring another you know I think 0.25 CTE teacher to help with I believe construction some construction projects which is going to be super cool for them um talking thinking about what Mr scaly said um Mr Miner said you know we're working on Clarity and I saw clearly the theme of clarity throughout all of the school site plans um and when we when Miss dobler Drew and I visited moralay High School the questions that Mr scaly was was talking to the students about absolutely reflected that notion of clarity you know we we really talked about that in the in the chemistry class it was it was I was pretty impressed with that um you stole my thunder on Esports I would you know

when I just I that just popped out at me at losos middle school I was I was really happy to see that and then I'll just close with the fact that um I want to acknowledge Low soless Middle School Carl and those guys aren't here first of all a couple things um they have special education and you guys all may have this too but they had I think two special education teachers on their on their School site plan committees which is which I was really stoked about as well as I think four students and one of their students is this is the is the site plan uh chair and and to see that um it you know we've known that before from them but I I thought that was really a neat way of honoring

students and um that student voice that we're starting to hear uh I did also and Mr Buckman also talked about this when we look at um the culture of care I think our numbers are are pretty good you know we're we're aiming at 80 90% about student engagement safety a little bit less but the bullying um districtwide it was about 60 62% the response something like that most School were hanging out in that 57 58 59% so obviously we have some work to do there and I'm not sure you know the definition of bullying versus something else but I think that that's something that we need to work on but I think all the schools are recognizing that as well it's not something that we're trying to sweep under the rug um so that's it

for me with that said would someone like to make a motion for approval of item 9.01 approval of the 2022 23 single plan for student achievement motion by Mr Buckman second second by Mrs [Music] frame Is there further discussion okay seeing none Mr Buckman Mr Buckman yes Mrs frame yes Miss doer Drew yes those are heroic efforts those are the words I wanted to get out heroic efforts on your part absolutely Mrs Sheffer Mrs Roger and I'm a yes motion carries 6 uh let's do 9.02 and see how we how we do it's been about two hours usually we like to take a little break oh do we have a okay yeah let's see um why why don't we why don't we go ahead and do the I innovate first and then we'll take a

short break because I think after that we'll hear the safety practices and that could be a little bit of a longer discussion good evening um great to see all of you I want to introduce um some individuals to you tonight so first of all we have Christine Robertson our executive director of the St Lou castol Education Foundation and next to her is Sasha Jefferson who I don't think you have had the pleasure of meeting yet she is one of our I innovate instructional AIDS um and then right behind me is Sarah Garcia one of our I innovate um toses and I know she did um some presenting via Zoom um last year we are we are missing two members of our team Katie Peters um is not able to be here she's um Sarah's tosa

counterpart and then um John Torres is our other um I innovate instructional Aid and he's taking a class tonight so um we are here to talk about the great things happening with I innovate and I so appreciate the comments about um science and social studies integrating with um everything the other subjects because that is the work of I innovate how do you integrate and bring that really engaging relevant Hands-On learning so starting us off um we have the mission of I innovate and it goes back to that integration with standards right um connecting classroom learning to the outside world and some of those people call them soft skills I think we should call them power skills right collaboration communication um and building in some of those things so that is all the the mission of

I innovate and then why I innovate so a couple things jump out um there's a lot on the youth truth survey from our students and our parents and even our staff asking for more relevance and more engaging learning thinking about things like Esports right um and then content knowledge matters and I know we had a discussion earlier this year about the importance of like the science and the social stud and the vocabulary and building all of those things background knowledge to really be a successful reader you need content knowledge right I think we would all agree knowledge matters um Business Leaders are sharing with us that students don't have the the essential skills for the workforce so how do we develop those and then this starts to expose students to some of those CTE Pathways

or some of those things with reach 2030 um you know at the elementary level and not you know funneling them into one thing but just exposure of a lot of different things we want kids to experience all different things so they can decide what they love so I innovate really has four big priorities this year the first one is around The Learning Experience designers um these are teachers I'm going to let Sarah talk a little bit more about this who volunteer to teach the I innovate lessons and really get in there and be be like the first ones the first penguins that jump in that water um and then the second one is around Equitable entry task exposure so this is the um eight times in the lab for the entry task um we're going

to talk about that more in a minute and then really refining and developing the units so those I innovate units making them even more integrated more Rich um and kind of just really beefing them up and then the last one is student it teams um you may have heard of the sinim or Lab Rats they're a little bit famous um and so this is that concept but now at all 10 Elementary sites so I'm G to turn it over to Sarah Garcia um to talk about learning experience designers hi everyone um so we have a group of amazing teachers they volunteered they're learning experienced designers um we started this with a dream that some would sign up out of a pandemic and we got 30 and this year we have over 50 and so we're

growing and these 50 teachers met with us at the beginning of the year at ACI jet we kicked off our year um we wanted to inspire them just like they're doing with these cross-curricular units and so this is a picture of them um at ACI Jet and they're doing a design Challenge and so they're teaching these cross-curricular Innovative units and so they're integrated throughout their day with a lot of content areas so science social studies mostly and then um they get support from canadi and I and we are in there I was in three classes today rolled up my sleeves jumped in there and just support them where I can we do a lot of planning meetings how to roll it out in the time that they have and um yeah so that's our learning

experience designers and then we have our amazing lead entry task leaders I have Sasha behind me and John is in the photo who's not here tonight but these leaders are leading eight times this year in the lab learning experiences for kids and so the teacher is present for these experiences and it's also inter very cool because they get to under they get to see how things work in the lab and then it's also integrated with their content standards and so they are just getting a little taste of what the lab has to offer and all students are getting access into the lab which is my favorite part and then this is a little bit more about the units that we've developed so there's one unit per trimester and it's integrated with science and social studies

and it's focused on Surface deep and transfer so surface is that content knowledge um and what you need to know the deep is the talking about it and then the transfer is applying it to New circumstances um we've been working really closely with Michael McDow to increase um the depth of these units and strengthen them and also what's really exciting is we've integrated them with habits of mind as well so for example kindergarten has three cross-curricular units and those units are threaded together Under the Umbrella of curiosity so their focus is all around en enhancing and experiencing curiosity through the lens of these three units and so each unit has something new to bring they are balanced in science and social studies with math English language arts also embedded in there and they are connected

as well to the reach 2030 jobs plan um and so this just gives them a little bit more of an experience of potential jobs that could be out there when they graduate and they get a taste test through the units which is pretty neat and lastly we have our student it teams so these are our official student it team members that it was launched this year last year we did a pilot with Simer Elementary the Lab Rats you might have remember that video we shared with you um the Lab Rats inspired us to create the student it teams at every single site these students are fifth and sixth graders if they are in the city and then fourth and fifth graders if they're on the coast um and so these students applied through an application

sent out by their teachers and they meet with us during lunchtime and we train them up on things in the lab they help to give tours um of the lab to new students that might come to the school and um we are in the process of launching these so we are about to enter session three so we'll be covering 3D printing um so they'll be able to support teachers and other students at the school who are interested in doing this in their classrooms and then I'm going to hand it off to Christine she's going to talk a little bit about our G good evening uh thanks for making time for this update I uh before I talk about the gala I just want to um just acknowledge what an amazing couple of years it's been

I mean through the pandemic we've heard a lot about the pandemic and the impacts and often times you know that can be focusing on the challenges that we're trying to overcome I have a little bit of a unique perspective in my role that I'm out interfacing with folks in the community I'm interfacing with other education leaders whether it's in the community college the university space or other neighboring school districts and talking to different leaders who are trying to work with the education Community to meet some of these big needs that are happening out in industry or in our economy and so it's from that perspective that I get to look back into what's happened in San Louis Coastal over these last couple of years and I remember when I innovate was just like a draft

logo on the computer that Kim McGrath and I were dreaming together about wouldn't it be amazing if and so now to be standing here a few years later and to be hearing the threads of this work showing up throughout the district talking about what's happening at our middle schools what's happening in the high school schools the way that our administrators are thinking about these integrated opportunities the way that Dr McDow is elevating these conversations through an an aligned professional development strategy what I see happening is a district that has an appetite to do great things for kids and to look up so often K12 is perceived to be so focused on these requirements State Testing mandates the Regulatory Compliance and K12 is perceived as losing perspective and tonight I hear so much big thinking and

perspective and really that's what we're trying to support through I innovate is looking 10 20 30 years down the road and say to the best of our ability how can we set kids up to both love being in school and find joy and creativity and to have have that Curiosity peaked and then have outlets for that Discovery but then translate that into real economic power when they leave our system so that there is economic Mobility particularly for our underserved and underrepresented populations in the district this is exciting work um and our Gallow was really our first opportunity to tell that story to our community to our donors and individuals in the community that we hope will engage as new donors uh so what was fun about this event is in the aftermath of it and

thank you so many of you were able to join us and that really meant a lot and I think it told a key part of the story which is the partnership between the foundation and the district but as I had a chance to debrief with many of our guests and many people out in the community whose opinions I really value uh there was an amazing theme that came came out of their comments and that was of all the events we go to all the Gallas all the dinners this was our favorite and as much as I would love to take credit for that and say oh I'm just the world's greatest event planner it had nothing to do with us it had everything to do with the fact that our students were front and center

and our students told the story through the things that they were uh contributing to the event so again many of you were there so you know this but we started off with our reception which was our student Marketplace and we had our high school bands that were playing the music for both our reception and our dinner and then we had representation from our elementary middle and high school programs whether it was our I innovate elementary students who were uh doing laser cutting on site and showing off uh either holiday ornaments or cutting boards we then have had our uh middle school students from Los sosos Middle School who had designed and made beautiful jewelry that they were doing through their steam program with Mr Curran and then out of St Louis High School Zach rooper

was there and they were showing off their uh silk screening and making t-shirts live and so we had a lot of community members that left with wonderful swag from the event and then as we went down into the dinner again we we had another band that was playing the dinner event um all of our centerpieces which you can see in the middle picture there were done by the floral design class at slow high school and then of course uh both the reception and the dinner was catered by our students uh in The Culinary programs and food services and so everywhere that people looked they were encountering the creativity and sort of Master skills of our students and um we just felt so proud of the partnership and all of the talent that you are helping

cultivate uh from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade all right and then this may feel like a little bit of a pivot away from I innovate but it is certainly related so we are in the middle of our round of teacher grants this year so we um opened up an application period that has now closed and we're in the review phase of the teacher Grant proposals this is the place where the foundation goes to continue to learn from these teacher Grant proposals we get incredible insight into the ideas that our teachers have and we are Shameless in stealing good ideas and looking for ways to incorporate those into the programs that we are supporting and integrating into things like I inovate and so uh as we've done in years past this grant cycle is

done in partnership with the teach foundation and so the teach foundation and the Education Foundation have integrated into one unified Grant round and I think that will be the model going forward there are some discussions about a more formal merger between the two entities um and I look forward to hopefully updating you as that conversation proceeds but for now we are partnering and what we're seeing as we we are getting deeper into these grants is we're offering up to $1,000 for an individual teacher or up to $5,000 for a team of teachers or a department so we've increased the amount of funding that's available to teachers and what's been interesting is we're starting to get fewer proposals but we're getting bigger asks and part of what's happening there is we've been able to work incredibly

closely with your your District leadership and your principles who are going through those uh grants with us and being really proactive about identifying where teachers have asked for something that the sites can support and so we're not seeing as many requests for you know small materials in supplies because the district has been really engaged in supporting teachers in those types of asks and so teachers are beginning to lean more toward more kind of innovative I wish I could kinds of proposals uh and so we're hoping that we're going to finalize our review and make our Awards in December of this year and get dollars flowing out to teachers uh when they come back from the winter break okay well the motto of I innovate is the future is a place we create so um thank

you for kind of hearing what we're working on this year and what the foundation has been up to and we are here for questions um Mrs frame thank you Mrs um storm I really appreciate um this is always such a raw Rah kind of celebration for because it's really student centered and our students really shine and this from a couple things that I had um one was um questions um as our toes have been working with um the teachers and directly with Stud students what are the trends changes they're seeing in both how teachers approach classroom lessons and how students engage in the classroom are we seeing kind of a carryover from you know they have the lab experience are we also seeing kind of that carryover our teachers talking about just you know one

of the things I was curious about can someone speak to that so I'm gonna I'm going to start this off and then I'm going to turn it over to Sarah um at the elementary principal's meeting this morning we were talking about the model um of Sasha and John and the eight lab experiences and the principles were sharing that teachers are definitely more comfortable in the labs and they definitely can see how they can be using the equipment within their lessons and it's just bringing down that anxiety the interesting thing about the i inovate unit is that the LED teachers are doing is they don't necessarily need to be in the lab right depending on the unit they could spend the whole entire time in the classroom so I'm going to let Sarah kind of speak

to if she's seen that kind of those methods like pick up and carry into other subjects um but we did go grow from 30 to 50 so there's some momentum there for sure you so yes I'm seeing teachers from our previous cohort they the units are are the same this year so a lot of them are like I love this and I have this extra thing that I want to try will you talk it out with me and so we're having pre- meetings with them to create these like super units with them which is really cool um and so in terms of students the engagement is just I I'm trying to keep up I just had a conversation with the student today who's like okay I'm on the student it team and it's really great

and like can we start making our own apps and I'm like okay I'm GNA have to go learn how to do that um so the momentum is growing and their interest is growing I've I've seen kids say I want to be a computer programmer now I didn't know that was a job but now that's all I want to do and so it's really I'm across the board seeing interest in these opportunities that we are presenting and what's even more fascinating is students that typically wouldn't have engaged they're 100% like honed in and ready to try new things and that's been probably the most rewarding well that's why I was thinking is that is these students experience this kind of disequilibrium kind of in the lab when they don't necessarily know an outcome and then they

become more comfortable with that and so perhaps in the classroom they take greater risks and challenge themselves in different way ways whether it's through the Arts or whether it's through a math lesson or something like that the other thing I had was um I know that there's a baseline of number of visits that um you know every every school is you know uh committed to doing but I'm wondering um for some of our sites that perhaps um you know they they just don't have as much knowledge or you know awareness um Family backgrounds or stuff do we have um a method for above Beyond um you know lessons for that particular school and I know it's that that time element as well but what does that look like could you talk to me a little

bit about that so right now we have they're in eight times consistantly um on top of that we we are try we will come into staff meetings to work with teachers that are still hesitant we've done that a few times um yeah I'm like there there isn't really a systematic um approach to above the eight but what our messaging is is you can always go in the lab as long as you're doing something like productive and curricular right go in the lab you're always welcome to go in the lab so there are there are teachers that are in the lab every week um and then there's some that you know aren't maybe as much and that's and for now that's okay because we know everyone's getting the eight and we hope that as people get

more comfortable they decide to go in there more um I think the LED teachers um probably are some of our more Cutting Edge that are in there more often um and then we did have a a couple School sites who had created like a lab schedule last year and teachers got used to going in quite a bit and they're in a little bit more so um we're starting with the base line of the eight right and then really trying to support those that show interest or have questions they teachers are not afraid to reach out to Katie and Sarah um they they know Katie and Sarah are awesome resources and will come running um at the drop of a hat and they and and they take advantage of that for sure okay thank you and

last question I had was real quick was um what are um um looking at the the plan of implementation and expansion what kind of Revenue sources are we tapping into that well you know that that are support and sustain this because this is such a valuable incredible opportunity for our students so looking you know now and into the future yeah so um as we all know I inovate has been designed as an open- Source program meaning we're not looking at this as an opportunity to monetize any of this work and generate an earned Revenue strategy so this is a partnership with the district where the district has committed funds and the foundation has committed funds and it's all based on philanthropic Community investment one of the things that I am focused on right now is

building ongoing relationships with local industry partners and creating multi-year funding commitments that are a little bit of a higher level I had a meeting this morning with a major Community employer and this goes back to my opening comments what I hear when I go out and I describe the work we're doing is complete shock just shock from industry saying that's amazing we had no idea that a district in our community was doing something like that and huge just kudos to the district leadership for driving the implementation of this work I mean what we're seeing is an increased confidence in Industry that this opportunity is real they want I the meeting I had this morning uh with a a local CEO he had his talent acquisition team and his HR team and he said overwhelmingly when

we hire one of the filters that we look at is is this a local person or do they have family in the area because it is really hard to import Talent from out of the area and have have them stay here our most successful hires have roots in this community what our community doesn't do is produce enough skilled talent to meet our employment needs so we have a disconnect where there are thousands and thousands of head of household unfilled jobs in our community and we are not aligning the talent production with the available jobs so there's a matchmaking opportunity that K12 can be a part of and it is in K12 that we get to do the truly transformational economic Mobility work and so when we bring that story to Industry and we demonstrate that

there's a real program being implemented with the support of District leadership and the buyin of sites across the district that's when I can put you know five six figure asks to Industry leaders to help Thrive the sustainability of this work and so that's the phase that we're in right now those types of asks at that level candidly were not realistic two years ago because the work wasn't mature enough we didn't have enough to show to say that this is real and has the Buy in and support of our district leaders we are now entering that phase where uh we can bring a compelling ask out to Industry to make this sustainable so I en I enjoyed at Los ranches and and I think Mark Mr Buckman was there too we saw John Tores leading a

project building the tower with the marshmallows and the straws Etc and you know there I was expecting there's going to be a winner Well turns out they're all winners right so I love that um everybody is enhanced all the students are enhanced without having to feel they're in competition with one another just with their own personal best and um it also reminds me I I I have a question about it do you know if it derives from The Destination Imagination program that used to be a countywide competition my son was involved in that way back he he built robotics things and then they would compete it was an allout competition with Children of different age groups and we used the binder for Destination Imagination in school I used it in my classes for things like

that for the tower type things I remember Destination Imagination when I was a lucar teacher yeah that's where we did it yep um I'm I can't say that it derives from that that specifically but a lot of these things right are out there um and so Sarah and Katie have done a really great job of sourcing those um and figuring out how to unline them with content standards and make them really relevant um and something that's doable the the entry t ask you know kids AR in there for 45 minutes well and you know you were a teacher that's really like 35 by the time you them in right and and so finding those things that are meaningful and engaging and quick um they put all of that together and then have really trained John

and Sasha in the delivery so kudos to them he did a great job I I'm sure both of them do I just happen to see the one yeah yes the kids the kids adore both of them yeah and so do you have plenty of you probably have Rams of material right of lesson plans cuz I was going to say you could use a Destination Imagination binders right in there but you have it Sarah do you need a Destination Imagination binder I I fig I figured you did you yeah I figured thank you anyone else go ahead um I'm just wondering as students use the labs I assume that some of the materials are would be considered consumables and um how are we replenishing those materials as it becomes necessary so that is where having a

strong partnership with the foundation is key um we are working towards building that into the cap um and school sites the um SAR and Katie did a nice job of giving the the school secretar like an ordering list for their LED teachers of all the materials they were going to need for the year um and so there's been sometimes when sites have said whoa whoa whoa we can't and the foundation you know jumps in and helps but we're trying to build that in as part of our kind of side of this partnership so it's keeping those those labs stocked and refreshed because you're right I mean you know we we go through materials for sure so it would be um if we didn't have to go to the foundation if the district were were doing

it would it come out of school site funds or would it be general fund or how would it so um I mean I know it's all one thing but would they have to use their small little allocation next year we are going to put it in the LC cap okay got it thank you hey Mark y thank you very much um he brought up our trip to those Ranchos and the marshmallows and I listened to the instructions and I envisioned I've said this before I envisioned the marshmallow having to be at the top the entire and the students listen to the instructions and they said oh well it only has to be a small piece of the marshmallow and that's I mean what they learned right there was phenomenal you can eat the rest right

I got I would have um the the question I have I want to bring up that I brought up earlier is making sure that there's a proportional access um so I'm a teacher let say at Pacho and I want to go in but I'm competing against a whole lot more not competing I'm I'm having to schedule with a lot more um against a lot more other folks and kids and so I just this is so amazing I think I've been in two of the labs and I just want to just somehow ensure that every kid has as much access as possible maybe comment I don't know so far we have not heard like I can't get in ever because it's too busy and it might be I can't get in on Tuesday at nine o'clock

when I me know my perfect time but so far I haven't heard a lot of um issues with that and then um you know having John and Sasha out in the lab um I didn't mention this but has been really nice because we have eyes on every Lab at least once a week so now we can make sure equipment is working they troubleshoot things the materials are there last year we would rely on teachers to be like the 3D printer is broken you know so now we're able to really kind of watch those labs and make sure that they stay in great shape um which is another piece of that kind of Equitable access add one quick comment and response so we are also trying to communicate to teachers to think about the lab not

necessarily as a singular destination but as a resource Hub and so there are some projects that are best complet in the lab environment but the equipment could be checked out by a teacher and taken back to their classroom and so if we think about it kind of like a library um where it's a um a place that has a host of resources and materials to support instruction that may or may not need to happen in that lab setting so now I feel like the marshmallow and not not listening carefully because I had no idea that you that the teachers could do that I really was focused on this this physical construct and it's got so thank you very much that's very exciting um you know this is not an action item but is there anyone

from the public that would like to also give kudos to the great job you guys are doing okay well you know Laura Christine Sasha Sarah thank you so much Christine I love to hear well we're we've got this ask of six figures yes so thank you thank you all um this is really exciting stuff um who would have thought you know as you said Christine five years ago three years ago that we would be able to do this and that this would be successful and and and demonstrate to our local business community and our local community in general that we're really looking at what the future needs are of our kids and our community so this is great stuff thank you all so much thank you for taking your time and um and sitting through

the meeting okay do does everybody think they could get back here by 20 till okay we'll take a break until 20 till e yeah site safety item 9.03 this is not action item this is also a discussion item um sites or safety practices update um thank you Mr Pinkerton and let's go yes I I am presenting tonight the second update actually we actually had an update back in August where we talked a little bit about the the pillars of safety um and kind of talked about some of the things we were seeing uh post Uvaldi um and kind of our Focus for the year and I'm just going to update the board on some of those things and I wanted to highlight a a couple of kind of big things that we've been working on

as well so um I will start my slideshow so the first one again is just a reminder um for the public who's watching tonight as again the board knows we're taking safety um and looking at it in a comprehensive approach right so looking at all aspects of safety not just fencing or um making our schools you know look like prisons or those type no we're looking at all types of things from mental Behavioral Health you know feeding kids right making sure that they have clothing to come to school we are looking at the physical environment of Campus culture climate we heard that a ton tonight right School site plans um we also have to look at it from a legal perspective policies board policies um and then also uh the Big Frame of operations and

Emergency Management so along with that uh Resolute and Associates of course has helped us with our safety plans and um done a lot of work at our school sites which I'll outline a little bit today but I wanted to highlight tonight the emotional health and wellbeing plan so not only do we have these disaster emergency what to do with a fire drill and a bomb um thread and all these other things that go into it we also again that comprehensive look looking at students um emotional uh stability right their well-being as well and so that was uh one of the things that I wanted to comment about um leading a safety discussion with the students at the student Senate uh last week and so it was really interesting for me to kind of just I

started the activity with what what do you think school safety is what when you know when you think about school safety what does it mean to you um and so it was really interesting and it kind of tied right back uh to what we had learned early on from Safe and Sound schools and that the ubal the Parkland these kids are still thinking about school shooter school you know those types of incidents happening and so that came out of that conversation with kids the other thing that came out of the conversation with kids was really just what we've heard as well that connection with with adults on the campus as well as other students and having people value them and feel s safe and secure um in being on campus and so those are the

kind of the two things very different I mean again thinking about school shooter part but very different than weapons on campus I they like didn't talk about drugs alcohol Shing thing you know throughout the day it was really an interesting Dynamic um just kind of hearing from the kids as we went through it and discussed um kind of what safety meant and the things that I shared with them this kind of plan and the things we're working on as a school district to make their school safe right um so again in this emotional health and well-being plan I'm not going to go through every page but just as a a kind of a snapshot right for the board to know um and this is something that Resolute really worked on they have some uh some

um Professionals in in the uh in the area of emotional health and well-being that helped them this with this some experts in putting this together but it talks about kind of that tiered strategy so just like we know from academics right you've heard that mtss same thing right so you have your whole group lessons that we do we have individual groups that we meet with as well as individuals right um some some students need a lot more support a lot more care and so some of that happens at our school site some of that is referred out into the community and just connecting kids and families um as needed um our counselors have been through this plan our school psychologists have been through this plan our student services department um Chris D or so I

want you know a lot of a lot of input has been taken has gone through this to put it together um and and again each of these plans will be things that we look at every single year as we update them as we kind of refine them as we move forward right um the two things that they really hit on and again this plan was focused and began before Co right we took the co break came back refining the plan but but Rob in in really hit on two things right and then you'll see the sections in there acknowledge every student every day that so again we're talking about safety School shooters all these other no no acknowledge every student every day so there's a whole section on that and how important that is for

kids right that they feel value tied in um the other thing is really that POS another section about positive student staff connection um and that you're going to hear later on from Safe and Sound schools um some of the kind of key findings and things that they they took away from that Summit um but that is something that we need to work work recently school school shooter right a student came back um they read the letter right I don't know if you've seen it in kind of what this student had said why he he did this right um and it was that social isolation not having connection no friends you know all those things right that tie into um kind of what leads to these these horrible tragedies um around the United States and around

the world so um you know those are key points that you'll see tied into this this plan um suicide is something that is a a huge threat in our country right now with kids and so there's conversations about you know how do we teach students about that how do we recognize it what are the things that we're doing to to help students um there's a huge section on threat assessment um and that is something that we're really going to have to work on and refine we've seen a lot of threat assessments this year more than ever before um and a lot of that has to do with the fact that we're asking people to report things to us tell us let us know and so the more you talk about subjects the more you bring

it up the more people hopefully are willing to let us know and you can follow up on with those things but that's definitely something that um is kind of a heightened you know a lot of threat assessments that we've been going through and they take a lot of time and so how do we do that how do we um work with site administrators to take some of that on so it's not all falls on Chris doler right and and that team so those are things we'll continue to have conversations on um and in the very end of course there's always that focus on um what if a disaster happened and what would we do in that right so again preparing ourselves even though there's not something in the for foreseeable future right but if something

did happen do we have a plan where we can pull this out okay these are the things we need to do this is what we need to work on um are we making those connections in the community do we have a County Mental uh mental health Team so those are things that Resolute is bringing those kind of ideas to us and then we're going to take those and connect in our own County with our own um individuals around us so a lot of great work around this plan um again it's this kind of typifies the fact of this whole looking at safety in this comprehensive way questions about that plan before I move to physical plan no so that I I included the the fencing study that we put together so at the very beginning

of the year we had the board had F hey let's get the you know let's start working on fencing at our school sites we had we have comprehensive fencing at at a few of our sites but we we decide hey let's let's start with our elementary kind of get those squared away so we put the temporary fencing up at delmare they started working on pachos this week around the field area now um which is nice um we did finish uh kind of expanded the block wall at the back of Monarch Grove um although there's still areas to be done around those campuses as you've seen from the plans but um we going to hit the tkk area at Los Rancho so we we have some of these prioritized sites coming through that we're working on

right now um and so we were also at the same time looking at measure C right so the potential of spond measure going through um you know because it's not just putting up the temporary chain link fencing but it would be nice to do kind of ornamental fencing make our schools look nice right along with providing the safety um that that those would would have and so this plan kind of laid that out for each of the school sites we another day we'll go through the plan together look at each School site kind of get your input again these this is something I wanted to share with principles get feedback from parents feedback from staff right kind of see but as you'll see from this it gets pretty comprehensive the other thing I wanted to

focus on is just the sheer cost and yes Mr hunger found a misprint in MO Grove it it's not $6 million for a fence there um missing decimal um but but you can see the overall and and it was correct in the overall amount but you're you're looking at about $4 and a half million dollars for fencing so when people ask why measure C why do why do we need a bond measure this is just one little area of something that we need to complete right so um but what this will do is this also gives me a jump start so should measure SE pass we'll be able to quickly work with the the board work with our sites to to get those um projects going right so there's a handful of things we really

I want to be able to jump on should the bond measure pass show people right that what what we're doing so HVAC air conditioning fencing plants safety um you know some of those types of things that I think would be nice Field improvements um around the campus things we're here now we did leave off PB in the fencing plan so good catch with from Maryland um so I did include in the board agenda I added it today um he right now is pretty much fenced in they have an interior fence uh on the current campus it's a little weird because they don't have an they don't have a door to the open you have to kind of come into the middle of campus to come in um but I did want you to see kind

of the the new potential plan for PB and the new fencing that that goes along with that so I've included that kind of site plan um on the board agender for the public as well as for the board to kind of see what that that fencing plan looks like Mar yeah thank thank you for including that um what I was hoping to see was a fencing plan for Pb as it as it currently sits because um what was included contemplates measures he passing and I know that at PB they have had some problems because of where they're situated um with transients and what have you at the front of their school and actually entering their school so fencing across that Frontage at least to totally enclose the school would be something I I would hope

would be contemplated if measure C doesn't pass yep agreed okay so again that more focus on that in the future in terms of looking at those plans um looking at some ways to you'll you'll see some things because even schools like um uh a seal Smith right where we've set up kind of that front fencing now it seems like it's good but they still have a need you know the whole neighborhood anyone can walk onto the campus right the other thing we're looking at doing with those plants is also is there a way to cordin off the campus itself during the weekends but yet we know the field areas the black top areas those are all open to the public after school during the weekends so there's some safety things like that that would be

nice to incorporate um in these plans as well and you'll see that kind of integrated in them I have gone over all those plans with the schools side principls and so again we'll we'll continue to get input and make some changes as we go so again kind of some big initiatives things that we're working on again Resolute is going around doing the lockdown drills Intruder drills uh meeting with the site meeting with the staff itself doing an actual drill on campus getting feedback that's happening it's it they've been basically hitting schools like one or two a week um since the beginning of the school after after that's done once they get through all the schools they're going to go into reunification plan that that is no small feat I was just going to say I

I think that's one of the most important things that we can focus on um and one of pro possibly one of the things we could control the least yeah you know we can't control the disaster but but parents wanting to be reunified with their children um in an you know in an emergency is it it it has so much potential for so many problems and we have to get that one right agreed and so that is it is a focus area this year and so they'll they'll be going with sites and doing that and make sure they have all the equipment and all the gear that they need to kind of set up those and kind of walk through it with staff um measure C there's no two ways about it there's measure sees a

big path toward safety um having interlocking doors at our school sites the fencing plan we've talked about you know there there's a lot that goes into um potential safety along with things like just fixing up Fields so kids aren't twisting their ankles and things like that as well right so it's pretty broad so we'll know next week hopefully um where we stand on that and if it doesn't pass we'll be making plans to prioritize what we need to do with the board in in terms of moving forward um again we're going to continue to implement the fencing enhanc no matter what happens we've already started with poo it's it's been tough getting materials having contractors ready to go kind of I mean we've waited for PCO to get going finally um and so you know

we'll continue those through schools as we move along um and prioritize that again the board has increased counseling right so that a big you've heard that tonight site plans principles we're hearing it over and over at school sites um again the focus though with our counselors too and and this has been difficult is hey you need to be out with the kids you need to see you need to walk around at lunch break talk to kids you know again I went to Laguna the other day I looked around at the end of the school there's six seven kids that are by themselves did not going out not doing anything are we connecting with those kids and maybe they're fine I don't know but talk to them ask them check in right so there's just little

things that they can do by being out that you can't do in your office when you're you're taking care of kids you're meeting with kids right they it's not like they're not doing work when they're in their office but there's just something different about being walking around and kind of visualizing seeing um what's happening at the school um increased communication with parents has been a huge push this year so Dr prayer right so communication plan communication communication communication so from teachers doing with with with um with parents from um principles on a weekly basis doing with it and if you've seen the principles Communications I it's pretty unbelievable honestly I've never seen anything like what they're putting out now um on a constant basis and they are purposefully including safety okay when they do a

lockdown drill before the lockdown drill let them know this is when we're going to do this is what you should expect talk to your kids about it you know all of those kind of conversation pieces um that I think help tie into again this safety awareness um around our school district all right I'm done I'm out no it's good so fol um fentol awareness I know that we've talked about that a little bit in communication Dr Prader has our school nurse um is is working on that our district nurse I should say is working on that with our sites and getting the training out so that's something that's coming um I talked about threat assessments it's an area in in working with Mr doer we need to that's something we need to continue to work

on um very very important work though I can't underestimate how important it is that we any threat that we have that we assess it correctly and that we get um you the right people around it to know what's happening again culture climate Community as Miss Drew talked about right parents being involved um you know the trainings that we're doing you know those are things that we can continue to expand right as this board knows you made this an initiative 12 years ago 13 years ago so culture of care right so this is it's not new to us as a school district um but we continue to refine it and find new ways of kind of getting that message out and sharing that with Community um and then I got to move this because I can't

read it and then the last one I'll I'll highlight um is is the safe Sports meeting so kudos to Dane Frost to lesli o' Conor um you know that the safe Sports plan going out to the school sites meeting with the with the the coaches meeting with the parents and just overemphasizing that process and what um coaches need to do and and parents need to do and kids need to do and interactions um is really really important uh as as we move forward so I'm going to end on a couple of things that I if I can um these were the key messages so I'm just going to really just quick highlight those with you so I went to the save and sound School Summit it was it was virtual I didn't have to go

anywhere but I watched it on my um computer um and so these are some of the key key messages from the the three days so and what's nice about these is it just confirmed what we're doing it confirmed what Resolute is showing us it confirmed the pillars it confirmed what we heard from kids last Wednesday right so it's just nice to get that confirmation about what's happening so the first one um which kind of talks you know a lot of the people that go to these are people that have experienced tragedy so they've been through a a school shooting situation they're a principal they're a district administrator they're a parent um they're a law enforcement officer they're a counselor those things so um it's just good to know right as we prepare um for anything

that might happen everyone travels a different Road and remember that um the people around you don't always have the same needs as you it's important to respect everyone's Journey forward as they process grief or loss and this is to me that's a message to our teachers too so just you have to know every kid is different and what they went through in their life and what what some when something happens some kids can oh whatever other kids it goes right to their heart right right so as a as a teacher as a a principal as an administrator you have to see that with kids um the next one right in right exactly what Rob Leen said acknowledge every student every day we need to pour into our kids show up every day be intentional uh

about giving them help attention love compassion patience and empathy right so those are just super important things um that our kids feel like like we care about them that helps them want to learn um the next one hey threat assessment teams so we have gone through a process with one of our former um psychologists right very in-depth process and so um Chris Dowler has incorporated that and we're doing it on a day almost a daily basis unfortunately it seems like over the past month um but it's really important that you have a very you know a multi-disciplinary team um that looks at these threat assessments and and um and basically you know ensures that we're handling potentially violent situations um and making sure that people are are safe as well as pointing those students into

the right path right into a positive direction when they find out that something's going on um again in the aftermath of tragedy or crisis people in leadership positions often need to step take step back you need to look at yourself right make sure that you're okay um because you need to be okay before you can help somebody else right these are kind of just confirming things that we all know in life um and then day three the last one and then again very little about drugs alcohol and um you know tobacco vaping things with the kids on Wednesday when we were talking about this um but I know it's an issue I know it's a problem um and so they they talked about um you know just in terms of how students are able to

hide deceive conceal drug paraphernalia drugs alcohol so they had a a resource off officer there kind of showing these different items I know that our both of our sites have been through trainings like this said the two Conference of high schools um but that's something too that I think it's it's still good it's a knowledge that our teachers our staff our administrators need to be able to to look for and know what's there um and then lastly super important again we'll end on and that and this is where you know when I walked around lagona that day and I saw the kids by themselves you wonder like did have they talked to anyone all day has anyone said hello you know you can go through school go through class without literally not speaking to anyone

all day um and so social isolation is one of the greatest threats to school safety okay so that is super super important that we again remember the quality of every student's life in our district um you know in direct proportion to the quality of their relationships right so developing those good relationships with kids focus on engagement are you know just all the little things right the element Athletics the band The Choir The you know these classes that kids are taking the I innovate lab being on the IT team all of those things connect kids and are super super important um and again creating that culture of connectedness uh by Leading with joy love right so students feel empowered and valued and so that's I mean that's at Heart of what we do on a daily

basis right or need to in our school district so that's safety it's not just the fence that people focus on or whatever it's really these are the key things that we need to focus on um in our school district and I think we are I think the board hopefully has heard that um and continues to hear it on a daily basis uh Miss Dawson is there anybody from the public that would like to talk to us about this Mr Banfield come on up so hold on just a sec we have a timer and everything and so we'll get the timer up up there a couple of weeks ago I happened to uh listen to Dave conlon and he had invited someone on that was opposed measure C so I took a moment and phoned in

and I said I happen to know that our district is really concerned about school safety he tried to say well how do you know how do you know I said no I talked with the superintendent and the the the lady was going on and on about oversight oversight with measure C making sure the funds would be used for what they were I said I know that they will but anyway I know that school safety is a big component of me you see so thank you thank you I believe that there will be another measure C discussion on Mr Kong tomorrow at 5 o' yes um is there anybody who would has questions uh Mr Sheffer I don't have a question as much as a comment um Mrs Roger Mr Buckman and I were all at

student Senate the other day and I will say that I was a I was actually surprised when a little not a lot but I'll I'll own that I was a little surprised when we talked about when safety was raised and I think because I I had measur see on the brain and thinking in terms of dollars and cents and you know physical environment safety because that's a big part of measure c um and it's a really important part of of measure see but I think that that listening to the student talk about there some did fencing was on there but not nearly as much as connection how how much theyve deeply they communicated out at all the grade levels from the Upper Elementary grades to middle school and high school how important connection was a

connection to a trusted adult so it it you know of course this is right on it agrees with that but just how how crucial those relationships are Chris yeah Mark thanks um I just I want to Second what Ellen just said it was it was so plain and so clear I mean I have I in walking around the I think every single School site and I think almost every school was was there Elementary Middle School brought up student connectedness and almost every single one of them actually use the term connect some adult to trust something similar to that so this is right on right on target um I'm really excited about fencing I guess and I'm sort of very sad about the fencing um in St Louis abiso we're watching um all the freeway is

are being fenced for won't go other reason but sometimes I wonder whether we're fencing our fencing the back stuff out or whether we're fencing us ourselves in but besides that um it's it's fencing balancing act so I'm going to tell you a story about when I grew up so I grew up in New York City PS 193 the my elementary school had a twostory fence around the yard there was no Park that we could walk to we were little kids used to climb over that fence probably two or three times a week I have a scar on my chest where I slipped a little bit at the top and to play stick ball and so it's a really it really is going to be a balancing act for the and I and I see it

and um I'm sure that the district is can can meet the challenge um but unfortunately it's a sign in the times Marilyn thanks Mr Pinkerton I'm wondering um if if measure C passes do does the fencing require DSA approvals or are the materials um specified by DSA and we can will we be able to hit the ground running it depends on the project I would say in the school site right so again accessibility Ada accessibility is a big part of it so there's there's certain areas easy you know replacing the current chain link fence from a three feet to a six feet at at P yeah go right the backside of PCO that Hill where the buses Park I mean that that all needs to be completely remodeled redone that's going to have to go

through DSA to be able to do that portion of the work now are we going to put a temporary fence between the classrooms for now yes but like that work needs to be tied in so at delmare for instance um right now we have some temporary fencing that goes around but you'll notice there's a few classrooms where have doors to the outside so we would like to have the ornamental fence go around that right well you have to look at the walkway the sidewalk the you got you have to make sure you have that those access points right from an ada standpoint so some of that will have to go through the Department of State Architects but um you know a lot of it we can we can begin all along I mean almost the

entire campus like at Los sosus Middle School along the whole back end the sides um Laguna Middle School that all Los sosus Valley Road right so there there's a lot we could do to get started thank you and just we they don't have to deal with that so much now and so they have a nicer area to go to school in and there are probably times when there they have community events there but things are going to be a little more organized than chaotic like prior I know that our sites have really valued the uh the the badges the visitor systems I mean it's much more you know strict in terms of having people on campus now and honestly I think it's been a positive thing on most of our sides I bet it is

but we are I mean I will have to tell you like our community our schools are wide open on the weekends like we don't we we open them up so what would be nice with these plans is if we could literally cordon off the school part of it the classrooms part and then have the fields and black top area open those types of things so I know that varies at certain districts but we've been pretty pretty open about letting the public use our our facilities because it is really a lot of places that is their their Community part true but there's a fine line between the boys running on the roofs jumping from from building to building thinking they're Spiderman or something very true and we deal with that at a couple of our school

sites now anybody else okay thank you well thank you very much really appreciate it uh 9.04 provis proposed revisions to board policy 3230 Federal Grant funds first reading yes thank you very much this is a first reading it's a mandatory um review for Federal grant funds it requires the district follow all regulations when using Federal grant funds they're talking about managing the funds inventory of purchases and they also mentioned performance reports and that's where a minor change in this policy is required through gam they've changed um rep reporting time from 90 days to 120 days which is really good for our directors who have to submit these performance reports my recommendation is that this comes back for a second read actually I was since it as I understand it as I read it it's just

a minor change minor I would I would suggest to the board that we go ahead and wave the first wave the second reading and go for a a vote on this tonight if if given if there are no objections to that yeah yeah go ahead Mrs Roger and then I'll go to the public yeah I'm I'm happy to do that I just had a question um Mrs Frost about the when they talk about federal grants is Title One considered a Federal grant title one would be considered a Federal grant Mr Pinkerton might be able to help us with some other federal grants there's a just a huge list of opportunities yeah Mr Pon there there's not a lot of federal federal grants to that sort I mean we've seen the co funds recently right title

one would be an example I believe you know we have some special ed funding that comes from the the federal government there's potentially some mental health funding coming through that we're looking at and trying to receive um so those that's pretty much it so this would this would just be additional time to complete the work that we've yeah already been doing in terms of reporting yes thank you and they very strict reporting with any federal fund that that we it sure seems like it yeah okay uh Mrs Dawson is there anyone from the public that wants to address us on this item okay seeing none I'll no one I'll bring it back to the board would someone like to make a motion okay okay hold on just a second and that was Eve okay is

there any further discussion okay I'll bring it back to the board for vote Marilyn Eve yes uh Ellen Mark Evelyn yes and I'm a yes motion carries 60 thank you very much uh 9.05 proposed revisions to board policy 51 41.6 school health services first reading and we I'm going to let you go ahead and then we do have some public comment on this topic okay very good thank you very much it is 5141 point6 school health services and this is a board policy that is coming back to the board we looked at this originally in early October um and have reviewed it after Board of trustee input after public input you will see some changes to this policy we added a descriptor of preventative when we talk about the health services throughout the document we

identified the health services that would be provided to students through this board policy we identified vision screening hearing screening dental services and physical exams that are voluntary at our high schools for participation in athletics we also removed the word Center when we described the um services that were offered on our campuses you'll still see mobile Vans but you won't see centers associated with um campuses um there is some discussion about the end of this policy where we talk about program costs and revenues and that was struck through by um one of the reviewers on this if you look at the services that we are recommended be approved through this right vision and hearing Athletics and dental those are not Revenue generating Services vision and hearing are required those screenings are required by public schools and

our s our nurses provide those Services we do have some cost of equipment but it's minimal as athletic physicals are not Revenue generating dental services are a service offered to families who qualify paid for through medical so the idea of reporting annually on this at this point unless in some future board meeting the board approves other services doesn't really make sense there might be a little bit of medical income but that is already reported to the board through some of the budget work that um Mr Pinkerton does so those are the changes my recommendation is discussion and approval tonight because we've already seen it two times and these um changes I think are um pretty indicative of comments that we've received Mrs Sheffer do would you like to read the public comment please first the

first uh corespondence is from Nicole Dorfman dear Dr Prader and the slcusd Board of Trustees I am writing to thank you for taking my concerns to heart in your revised school health services proposal the added requirement for parental consent for all services guarantees that the district and parents will be working in cooperation with full transparency in the best interest of students I also appreciate that you have included a finite list of four non-controversial Services Vision hearing dental and sports physicals which represent programs already being provided by the district and which have long been offered by schools and welcomed by parents throughout the nation my only remaining question is related to the program evaluation can you please explain why you are choosing not to evaluate program costs and revenues this matter was brought up in the

last two meetings but as far as I am aware there has been no public response thank you for addressing the issue in your board discussion tonight the next correspondence is from Janette stocking thank you for hearing my concerns regarding the previous student health services proposal you voted it down and went back to the drawing board and added some much needed Clarity the specific services to be included are dental hearing vision and sports physicals these are all currently provided by the district and I'm sure will continue to be appreciated by families thank you for adding the requirement that all services must have written must have written parent Guardian consent prior to providing the service to the child this is the only way as a mother that I would stand behind any type of health services available

to my child as parents we must be the main decision makers for the Health and Welfare of our children it's our job I appreciate you removing the words through the establishment of a school health center from paragraph one sentence two of The Proposal a health center brings to my mind a fixed building that the kids would walk by as they're headed into school the mobile Andor temporary health services verbage supports the proposal much better for the listed Services provided in both readings of the first proposal I asked specifically about funding and raise concerns about the reporting of program costs and revenues being crossed out in the program evaluation section it states in order to continuously improve preventative school health services the board shall annually evaluate the effectiveness of such services and the extent to which

they continue to meet student needs as needed it goes on to cover rates of participation School climate program accessibility linguistically and culturally diverse students Etc what it does not discuss is the financial viability of the program there is a lack of transparency here and that is concerning I want to thank you again for revamping the proposal for student health services with more clarity and attention to the parents role and rights in our children's healthare adding in the financial accountability aspect would make it complete Mrs Dawson is anyone uh who would like to address us via Zoom okay I'll bring it back to the board um Eve I want to thank you too I did a great revise there and really addressed the concerns that I had brought forth um amazingly well so yeah it's wonderful

when we all feel heard and seen and understood that's what we want for our kids too um and I wanted to also bring up the the point about the financials and can you speak to that Miss Miss Frost yeah I can give you a couple of thoughts about that vision and hearing are required we don't bring in an outside service to do that our own nurses will um do the vision and hearing screening every now and again overtime or we might have to bring in a trained nurse to help out if we have a lot of students but it's not um by um by design a revenue generating opportunity it's a service we provide to our students with the permission of their parents Athletics physical we have volunteer Physicians come in and the children with

their parents come voluntarily it we the district does not pay anything for the service nor do we generate any income and it's the same thing with the dental services the one thing that we may generate some money is through medical with some of these although it's minor if at all and those are already reported to the board through um financial and budget reports that Mr Pinker offers great yes thank you very much anybody else from the board he would you like to make the motion yes I'll make the motion to approve the board policy 5141 point6 as revised ton tonight U somebody like to second that Evelyn any further discussion okay Eve yes uh Evelyn Mark Ellen Marilyn and I'm a yes motion carries 60 we'll move on to the action consented agenda please let

me know if you'd like something pulled uh 10.01 approval of certificated and Personnel items 10.02 acceptance of donations 10.03 approval of field study trip requests 10.04 approval of furniture and Equipment request 10.05 approval of new position senior secretary clerk 10.06 approval of purchase orders and Cal card purchases 10.07 approval of warrants and payroll 10.08 proposed revision to board policy 010 philosophy second reading and 10.09 authorizing continued use of remote teleconferencing Provisions pursuant to AB 361 and government code section 54953 okay I'll move approval of items 10.01 through 10.09 okay we have a motion by Marilyn a second by Ellen any further disc discussion okay uh Marilyn yes Ellen uh Mark Evelyn Eve and I'm a yes motion carries 60 um next we move on to Advanced agenda has anybody got any advanced agenda items right

now all right uh for informational we have the developer fee report which Mr Pinkerton mentioned before uh 10 point or sorry 12.02 reports by board members I have something Eve go ahead yeah so what I'm about to give a synopsis of ties in with the points of bullying and parental inclusion and the culture of care positive staff connections having adults at school that that kids relate to at least one adult at school um I attended a session of the four-part professional development now in staff meetings at s Louis at slow and moral bay high schools the title is sexual orientation gender identity and expression s SOG iie I believe I am the only board member to have attended one so far uh but correct me if I'm wrong uh the essence of this training is

part of the new culture of care lcap focus should be made available for all district stakeholders including especially parents and families and I brought this up earlier when we're talking about the special uh school thepa but I I'm just reemphasizing it now because because it's important for the parents to know the substance matter uh possibly by receiving the handout materials through parents Square we received handout materials one of them was the laws that backed the training so they know that their state state mandated they're not board mandated and they'll know where the authority comes from that's one reason to include parents the other reason is that some of the laws exclude parents but anyway I I I uh will cons I will keep going here uh so the parents some of them are in school

volunteers who need this knowledge of the new laws that support the training the presenters sarin Ruggles and Stacy Hunton from the gay and lesbian Alliance Gayla cited data points from the 2019 California healthy kids survey given to grade 79 and 11 the evidence shows that lesbian gay bisexual and trans students are significantly more likely to miss school for not feeling safe to be more suicidal to suffer fear of bullying and being beaten up to a much greater extent than their peers in these areas the survey shows slow County to be 10% worse than California averages so we are urged by the presenters to do better but what has improved and that's where our culture of care comes in is there's at least one caring adult at school according to what these how these children responded

on the survey who makes the student feel welcome and safe and th those numbers have gone up so there's a a good positive and that's kudos to our district when calling home this now continuing with the synopsis when calling home teachers must use the name and pronouns that are used at home so they can have different ones at school without parent permission legally the student can change their name on the Aries student roster to create a firming spaces the teacher could place a little circular rainbow sticker in the window by the door this sticker lets all students know that bullying will not be tolerated here so that's a good way to address bullying teachers are asked to find Opportunities to acknowledge lgbtq contributions to a top or to integrate it into their curriculum available resources

include lesson plans for all different grades on several different topics topics relating to lgbtq against this is backed by laws saying that history has to include lgbtq in inclusions um contributions excuse me and um in downtown slow Gayla holds youth support groups for sixth through 12th graders every Tuesday and Thursday recently they hosted a Halloween party for 6th through 12th graders with drag queens a DJ and tarot card readings they are also starting an elementary youth group next session they will examine case studies now here's something else I also received a communication from a teacher whom I didn't know before saying that a significant number of teachers had serious concerns about the training in particular statements from the first session such as quote we want them the kids to explore sexual orientation and identity unquote

and also this one it takes complicated testing to really decide if we are a boy or a girl so in conclusion I lay this out as a means to involve everybody to know what the general trainings are are it's not going to be a confidentiality issue because we're not talking about specific students but all the parents and they're going to be in the schools and they need to know how to interact uh correctly now so that's why I emphasize the parent the parent training and it goes back to the elcap where we say we need to do a parent training in diversity inion too so arrest arrest my case anybody else Mark yep thanks um it's been some interesting times um I just want to thank Diane for bringing up the national apprenticeship week I

truly appreciate that um this whole apprenticeship program is just so important to our community um local jobs for local grads I've met and have been asked to speak to um one apprenticeship class that was really interesting um all local guys not head of household jobs and all looking forward to having head of household jobs um true skills um we have Diablo Canyon more than likely opening and all of these trades would be valuable there um I did spend some time um I met with one cool Earth they're slowly becoming the folks that are going to run our garden programs at the schools um was a very U very enlightening um good group of folks and um i' really like to thank Mr Pinkerton and his folks for allowing the gardens to go in and to

hook up to the water system um the teachers there was actually a class that came through while I was there um so I actually got to see it sort of In Motion unfortunately one of the young children picked one of the Watermelons before it was quite right but that's okay um so that was really good I attended a dinner fundraiser for the slow High Sports boosters um that was pretty amazing a little out of my league when they got to the auction but uh the dinner was the dinner was really good um I I did B on a necklace but didn't get it I attended the student Senate which um was mentioned it's pretty amazing event I just my question then I guess is I've never heard of it I worked with a lot of

school districts around the state I have not heard of a student Senate before so ultimately I'm going to sit down with Eric and find out about that um the next day I did get to attend the district Equity leadership team it's always amazing to sit down with folks on that and then um I was able to attend the second night performance of radium uh and it a I'm always Blown Away by the new theater at San Louis High especially compared to the old theater um which was basically in a closet um and I'm going to make a really corny joke well first of all I have to remember that I owe ASB for two cookies I had no cash and they were nice enough to front me because I hadn't had dinner so I have

to remember I have to pay ASB for two cookies but I'm going to make a really corny joke because it was a really glowing performance radium okay all right we'll work on that thanks Chris ouch ouch anybody else I'm sorry Marilyn thank you I don't usually make a report about everywhere I go and everything I do but I did want to mention um tonight that I went to lososo middle school um for their presentation of the film angst um I wish that more parents had attended it was not as well attended as I I had hoped for but there certainly were parents there it was a very powerful film about 45 minutes long about um students student depression student anxiety uh suicidal ideation just uh what what many young people are going through and it

was moving it was very moving and um it was put on by Denise Baka the school counselor but they had other people present who um are supporting student emotional um well-being at the school I think that they have my gosh they have a full-time counselor a part-time counselor uh they have someone who does one onone uh with students that is not full-time but is there I think two days a week I they have a number of people actively working at Los sosos Middle School to support Kids in Need and um Miss Baka had suggested that perhaps it might be possible to um make that film available for families to watch together at home if they if they chose to do so and so I don't know if if that's something that is is possible to

do but I think it was it was meaningful and it was um enlightening and I I think it would give rise to um great discussions uh in people's homes so I was I was really glad that I attended that thank you Ellen quite surprise I'm saying something for a board report which is highly unusual for me like Mrs Roger I don't I participate in things but it's um people who need to know know it so but I did want to so this is more a shout out because I'm much I'm much much more comfortable doing this I ran into someone the other day at Costco and she named Linda Smith who was my son's kindergarten teacher and I was of course ecstatic to see her we've we've our paths have crossed occasionally over the years

but the reason I bring this up is I is out of gratitude to our retired teachers because she is now volunteering at Bishop's Peak in two classrooms and I just think it's so wonderful that to see our teachers who gave their entire career to spending it with our children continuing to do so in their retirement and I am in such awe and so grateful for uh she is not the only she's just someone I she prompted seeing her prompted me to uh to make this report tonight when we after chatting with her and when I left I thought I'm going to talk about how grateful I am to our retired teachers as my board report tonight so there you have it but thank you Linda Smith and all those like you out there continuing to

have a really wonderful uh impact on our on our kids amen um Mrs frame anything nope just checking so I I I along with Miss dobler Drew went to the moral Bay High School Boardwalk um which was great you've heard a little bit about that and then I did a site visit to uh lomes last Friday and was greeted by Mr Bloom who was dressed as Uncle Fester from The Adams Family he and his office staff for The Adams Family it was it was pretty hilarious um couple things he did though that I want to mention is he took me down to the Garden area and they were there there is a garden at Los sosus middle school and they're finally starting to use it and they're propagating native plants uh which they are then

planting in around the school which is great it's it's great stuff um kind of thinking about what you were saying too one of the other things that Lo Solus Middle School is doing is uh I know our elementary schools talk a little bit about that check in checkout um there is a room that's being used at Los sosus Middle School for students who um sometimes have a little bit of extra need um for some support maybe a calming place a quieter place to go and and they've really started using that and I and and I think that that they're seeing some some good results from that too at that school was able to visit Mr Taylor's class um Andy olssen who is the uh one of the science teachers um took was kind enough to

let me go in his class and showed me his project one of the projects they were doing on uh paper airplanes and and Engineering paper airplanes believe it or not it was great and then I went into Mr hotelling's room and that's always entertaining and then finally I just wanted to say that um after our our real presentation last at the last meeting I contacted a deputy super deputy secretary of uh agriculture who I met back in Washington DC on my last trip there um who was working on uh School meals and school food and I sent her the the good news about what we're doing here and uh she did respond and say she would love to come see what we're doing um and that she would also pass that information on to the

regional Food Services people and hopefully we'll get a visit from the Department of Agriculture so we can share the great work that we're doing yeah sh we're doing some great stuff here so I think on that note we're proba done thank you all very much and we'll see you in a study session in about a week thank you
