in san marino good evening it's good to be back with you all i'm here to speak in regards to the last board meeting on august 10th i wanted to first thank you lord for the decision three to two in the very controversial decision for not masking our children outside it was the right decision by not adopting those policies so thank you and i applaud you on that decision i would like to address a few comments that that we heard on the rest of that meeting that were disturbing mr chang first i would like to thank you for your service and it came to my knowledge who served the board for 25 to 30 years and that's a very long term and again sincere thank yous for that service it was also very telling in that

meeting that you do care for all the citizens in the community so thank you however there were comments that i must point out to the board in the community that were not representative to our community quote this is the only country in the world that is not consistent and they count on social economic and political pressure this gives too much freedom and eventually it can cause problems for your family two my sister's kids live in taiwan she has a four-year-old and at the beginning of the covid they said to take off the mask take off the masks once they wore the mask they got used to it and they didn't have a breathing problem three carver is very lucky and they do not have resistance to this issue and number four tonight's meeting was ver

was not meaningful to you fortunately this is a society and country which we live with all due respect this is not taiwan this is a democratic society comments like these are disturbing and for myself and residents that i've engaged in here within san marino and they do not represent the entire community we all know covet is controversial and to me frankly you should not have been surprised that some parents came here in support to fight for their children you basically just threw up your hands in the air and said that his meeting was not meaningful and if the process bothers you sir maybe you need to reconsider your term on this board because that meeting was anything but non-meaningful it meant a lot to our community and to our children mr kalaki the way you

conducted yourself in that board meeting was out of line your condescending tone was outright rude president ryan even called you out on it the way you spun the situation and the comments that the board had made was deceiving you know what you were doing it all and you did it anyways because you did not like the final vote that president ryan had cast you must have said three or four different times can you clarify or i want to make sure i understand you correctly i knew darn well what they had said the board must have spent another 10 to 15 minutes because of the confusion you were spinning and the decision was one three to two it also came to my attention that you you've run for this seat in the past and did not

win your actions have been noted and will not go unforgotten in this community when it's time to rerun i think san bernardino deserves a better representative in that seat thank you all thank you ward thank you next jonathan jonas presentation did i send it to um did everyone receive a handout yes good evening my name is donovan janus i am a third grader andrew janus and a fourth grader emilia freeman um i intended the coffee uh so graciously hosted by president ryan and superintendent edatora last week now last week i also watched father of the bride and those of you familiar with the movie it starts off by saying we live in a small town in southern california called san marino i love this town and not just because it's a kind of place where

people still smile at each other and the coffee is very apparent we stop smiling at each other and in fact looking at each other whether we can infect our kids one parent asks a very good question you know what does it mean to be safe now for the people that are at home i want to see the presentation i'm going for that i handed out to the board it's available at 17 hats dot com slash san marino that's one seven hats dot com slash san marino lower case on the first slide you can see you have a misinformed electorate now what this was a graphic from the new york times what are the chances summary of coke must be hospitalized 88 of democrats over estimated the risk 70 republicans with 77 percent of independence this

is not a partisan issue the new york times tried to make it out we all overestimate the risk humans suck at risk we're all all more afraid of flying they're not getting into our cars whereas the risk of a car accident is infinitely larger so let's look for our kits the initial cdc numbers put in survival rates at 99.997 percent for ages nine zero to nineteen let's put it into context zone in california we've had 23 deaths in the five to 17 age group okay so how many people been infected well according to the cdc the sierra preferences is 32.6 to 43.3 percent so we're going to use the lower number to be as pessimistic as possible on all these slides the references at the bottom you can look it up you know and make

sure that this data is as dropping as possible but let's do some elementary school math in california we have about 40 million residents sixteen point seven percent under 5 to 17 age group it's about 6.6 million kids now according to the cdc about 32.6 that's the low estimate that had co-fit is about 2.1 million out of those we had a total of 4 600 hospitalizations and 23 deaths with 2750 kids in san marino usd so if we put all that together that means the risk if every kid in sabrina will be infected i mean 0.029 will pass let's put that into perspective that's one child every 34 years if every child would be infected and no immunity in reality yeah not taking a piece into account all those things you know we're looking at oneself

every hundred years if not longer it's a very acceptable risk we've only had good news when it comes to covid when we put it into perspective yeah the less people that have covered them the flu drowning heart disease homicides suicide theorists have cancer in the five to 14 year olds now there's a really good graphic from financial times for anybody over 30 that is vaccinated they're still a higher risk and kids are unvaccinated you know and that's why our kids at lunch are safer than mr pelosi speaker pelosi at her dinner in napa now i don't attack mrs pelosi for having a grand napa she's being perfectly safe but our kids are safe is still having lunch one minute remaining okay this is also why the cdc doesn't have a close contact thing forget they

have exception for kids in k-12 their classrooms as long as they're above mass but delta or faulty says there's no definite evidence that children are suffering greater severity level of disease but delta right now if you look at the graphs from the help date of the government with 110 kids hospitalized in california in total 30 seconds now let's get over the things in pasadena but the median age tested death it's 81 years the average life expectancy in california 81 years long coffee for kids studies from uk have shown it's not an issue their consequences all being good news children are less likely to get infected they're less likely to spread no longer no chance of dying grandparents are vaccinated teachers are vaccinated the kids are as safe as possibly can be one correction i'm nearly

finished last time i was here i said the cdc had not going to study your mask skills i was wrong they did one of ninety thousand kids what did they find no statistical benefit from wearing a mask in the classroom think about that while the studies not been long sized and one simple request follow the medical science not the political science thank you thank you next we have communication from the audience regarding matters on the consent agenda they are to be made at this time dr choi we are pausing for one minute to take requests to speak regarding matters in the consent section if you'd like to make a request please read press the raise hand icon star 9 or submit a public comment card 30 seconds remain if you would like to make a

request to speak regarding matters in the consent section please press the raise hand icon dial star 9 or submit a public comment card president ryan we have no requests via zoom thank you dr troy in 8 a is the consensus i have a motion i would like to move to i'm not sure how to do this so you might have to help me um i would like to pull 8g to discuss later after we have had discussion of 11d so make that motion [Music] move to move item 8g to return to the to discussion after 11d thank you may i have a second a second thank you mr uh kalaki and mrs chong um so we will be moving um 8g to after 11d is that what you're saying okay you said 11d isn't it

thank you so may i have a motion to um approve the consent section um excluding eight oh we have to vote first okay sorry mr kalaki hi mr chang aye mrs aye mrs jack aye mrs ryan i student board member miss one thank you the motion has passed um and i move to approve the consent section of items eight a through eight test may i have a second a second thank you mrs chong and mrs jack world call mrs jack aye mrs chung hi mr chang hi mr kalaki hi mrs ryan i student board member thank you the motion has passed for um consent section 8a to 8f when we will be um revisiting hg communication section communication from the board of education this is an informational item 8a mr clackey um yes so uh

since our last time that we've met an opportunity to participate in a lot of great events around our district um i was i had the opportunity to be part of the hms new parent orientation um it was very informative and mr tom holland did a great job in welcoming many sixth grade parents as well as parents even new to the district who were eighth grade um it provided a lot of information and kept everybody informed so that was great um also uh took part in the back to school nights at carver and valentine had an opportunity to uh step into some of the teachers classrooms and learned quite a bit i also had a a very nice opportunity to hear dr lynn answer some questions about masking and what kind of information is given to

our students at that school with regard to being good citizens and doing what we can to keep everybody safe so that was very good um also i participate or i attended the uh san marino motor classic and uh saw one of our our own at the motor classic um mr chapalian who had a car that was in competition um which was a beautiful vehicle um and saw a lot of people from our community kids and and rotary members and so on um i've had an extensive amount of communication from numerous families from multiple campuses all over the district with a lot of questions about outdoor education with a constant and consistent number of cobit positive cases on our campuses and one of the best pieces of information that i heard in the last couple weeks

was the fda full approval of the pfizer vaccine so that was great news to hear that uh anybody that's been waiting to get a vaccine um until there was full fda approval we now have that so um definitely encourage anybody who wants to get a vaccine to get out there and please get it because it helps keep everybody safe i've also attended three masters in governance classes with the csba um all of which are two day classes on school finance and student learning and achievement and human resources and collective bargaining one of the topics that we talked about with regard to student learning and achievement is something that i think our district could definitely benefit from is a distance learning academy the distance learning academies there's a few of them that have popped up around

the state there's even one in a very close neighboring district that has hundreds of kids attending it it provides an opportunity to get quality education and it allows students to avoid um what they may see as an unsafe situation with exposure to covid but also uh receive education that's different than the independent study program i think also if our district were to provide that it would it would also protect us and provide opportunities for quick education at a quality level if there's other emergencies such as facility breakdowns or earthquakes that may cause problems with some of our facilities and it can also potentially boost enrollment which could then provide additional funding to our district so that's something that i i definitely would would love to uh to see our district uh be a part of

and and then i also i'm looking forward to the hms and the high school virtual back to school nights and i wanted to thank both of the principals and the administration for the district for making that decision i think that there's going to be a lot of parents that had a lot of anxiety about personally attending a back to school night and this will allow them to be able to know what's going on in their their students classrooms throughout the year so thank you mr clackey mr chang um first of all i'd like to thanks for cover and valentine's principle so so i attend the open house yeah luckily you know nothing happened so i think that's good yeah and uh as i attend the activity i always have some purpose i'm not just go

to to to show off i'm the school board member because i have a very valuable time yeah so scuba just one of five organizations as a trustee i work in in the most organization i'm working for the mainstreet another not just the chinese organization okay so first of all usually i don't respond about the audience the comment but if the audience is too personal i would like to to say something and i'm not an audience so i don't have a 30 minute limitation so i want fully translate what my my goal so for the school board member sorry about i i if i want to reach you what you say i need to run another turn because right now i only the 20 year i'm not a 25 year okay so for a school board

member but i am the one chinese or taiwanese and worked in the mainstream for the summoning community for a long time i think i work for with your mother okay your mother probably know me so you mentioned about my taiwan trip you think i'm just clear about taiwan it's not right actually taiwan did a wonderful job unless a couple months ago when the pilot they they stayed in a thai day a couple days but did not do the good protection and then spread to the taipei so taipei have about a two month or three month crisis and right now you know the minister of health they did a good job so they everything go back to the normal so infection rate is the number one in the world okay so i don't really care about

taiwan because right now i trade the money no it's my hometown unless if someday i have too many the new camera they don't understand the public health so i will move out so so far i don't have an idea i'm going to move out because i have the next generation you know i don't identify which party i am i think that this one trying to persuade the postal party they they they have some intention i don't care about the party but you can check which party i am but but not necessarily i i will trust any party that the the policy or or the favorable idea because i think i'm the way i train people i have my brain okay i will use my own judgment to see the which one is beneficial to human

being which one is good for the summoning community if you think you are doing the right i respect you because that's your child but 20 years i ran for a school board member not for my kid okay not for my kid when my first two turn nobody know my son name because i don't want to be special i never for my two son issue i never bring up and give to the principal say please take care because no need to do that my son with my training he can independently to judge what he need to react in a school he doesn't need a parent every day sale you go to a school what you need to do because that's training education training total is wrong total is wrong i have a chinese name or taiwan's

name but i am the american citizen all i did is for the mainstream when i became the hospital administrator congressman come to my hospital say congratulations okay you are the the first one the chinese administrator in the south california when i study in the tournament i'm the minority the first day i come to a new orleans i'm not have a good english so when i take my graduate school my classmates said hey you probably got go to the run the classroom you go to the international health so loss is from the africa student they are the minister of health right now and then they someday they they get the mph then they will go back my class is mha okay very rigorous the class 60 creative hour 1000 residency our i train in the usc

county hospital and then they tell me i go to other class i tell them okay i i'm not going to argue with you because i'm a minority so after 30 years i think i'm the one became the hospital administrator over here even maybe as speaking in loud loudly english but i am still reaching my goal so when i'm in the united states i never take a privilege say i'm the minority because i tell my son if someone open you it's okay reflection you go to another way you study hard you practice hard you don't even know you are able to do things so please don't think i'm just doing for a chinese okay my my older son is a professional football fan okay he can analyze everything i think he almost probably offers football so

when everyone come to this stage please remember you can speak loudly but speak in the justice don't criticize people if you understand our daughter doesn't want to be take care it's okay here the school district we were in school you that's my honor speak to you on behalf of another president don't bother me okay i want to finish why you think i'm the crazy the doing for the kobe 19 prevention i don't have a kid he said your kid is not my kid you don't care your kid you want to do everything follow this survival you do it through it do it because it is your kid you're right today my supporters not here you want me to tomorrow get all my supporters here when i run the school board i always in the talk

because a citizen especially all folks they know i care about a community you go everywhere everybody from the dc park from the rotary club everything i participate because i know the minority want to be respect you have to do something so um every day my life is not working in the chinese community i don't i don't know what is wrong i tried to help the school district so i became the enemy my last 20 years this is the first time because kobe 19 viruses not come to your house so you think it's okay saturday my my son just come up from the hospital he said the patient is screaming and suffering and then there is a not enough nurse you think the public health can help i can agree the public health what is the

outdoor definition outdoor definition you think you show me the parasite we're happy you think i'm the same party with the parachute okay um mr chang thank you so much not yet not yet today i suppose not to come because i know the people trying to challenge me you gotta invite me to be here right with 20 years the community service and the people don't doesn't understand and i have to be tortured here that's meeting only one time this is a second time you can bring your the input is okay you you don't have to mention my name but you want to mention my name it's okay mr chang would you mind if i continued with my turn no tonight i come here is my time it's just happening after 20 years i serve as a

school board cannot communicate with the parents parents here they think they are intelligent they are where educate but just the the timing is you want to to argue with the school district about the guidance if your kid is not want to do that with okay loi county already said uh yeah it's an option no yeah right now we are off you know but but after one week eloise county said if 10 000 crowded outdoors please take the mask so i find la county health what is the the policy what is the policy the policy i know what the loia country trying to do when they they see a serious then will use the more the serious the the guidance the night only the one time but it's your kid it's not my kid it's not

my kid my kid also from the k to 12 here they are working with the caucasian parent very well and right now they are okay in the society to feedback so what's the problem as the chinese it's a may just have a discrimination and on the asian and right now we are trying to trigger to this kind of issue freely we are trying to trigger this issue about entire asian i i have to respond no no never no no please her i never said anything about race you just brought into the conversation about taiwan okay what's the problem with taiwan i quoted you sir i quoted you i didn't say anything about it i quoted your words where you are properly i think so we need to bring it back to you sir let's have

order please okay um thank you hang on um mr chang perhaps after the open session we can have a discussion if you want to have a dialogue but the board um one more time okay let's let me okay let me come on my statement okay as a school board member i only care about a kid you're a kid they're a kid not my kid my kid years old the whole time you know how we get the summoning titans steady and fear the time my friend caucasian parent they donated money seven hundred thousand and some of uh chinese parents said no we don't want the football fair i'm the one cut in the middle and the sun they said that they will fire me before i say yes yeah i say yes the football field is

a good for everyone it's good for everyone so you don't know that kind the the story and because i just mentioned about the outdoor issue and then you're trying to attack me this is ridiculous you are need to go to the community service more like your mother don't just fooling around in in the community okay okay thank you mr chang um so i i just want to bring the board back um because um we're we want to stay on the agenda so kind of keeping it brief because we need to get through the agenda um mrs chong you are next sure uh i will just keep it brief i attended the new parent meeting at carver via zoom as well and the back to school night at carver i could not make it to valentine

as i had to attend my own child's classroom and i also attended a los angeles trustees area trustees zoom with on reopening schools with dr ferrer and she basically just reiterated the idea that everyone just really needed to do their part to keep the schools safe and open for our children personally on a personal note i've attended a lot of meetings and briefings around the state and county and it's clear that everything is challenging emotions are running high situations continue to be fluid and institutions continue to adapt very quickly and yet there is one consistent message across all of the institutions and that is gratitude for the grace and patience that everyone must exhibit as we work through the situation because everybody has the same goal to provide a safe and meaningful academic and emotionally

healthy learning experience one last note not really related but i wanted to pass my condolences on the passing of a san marino family former carver employee um jennifer rios she lost her battle to cancer last week and um she will be very missed as a friend as an educator and as a loving mother to her children so i just wanted to express my condolences to their family on that thank you mrs jack in the interest of time i have nothing to report i will report it at the next school board meeting okay thank you i as well and so i will turn it to superintendent for your communication thank you president ryan members of the board um i just wanted to briefly say that i am so grateful and so appreciative of my hard-working team

dr richter dr steve choi they have just been working so hard to make sure that we're getting everything done as you all know we've had layers and layers of responsibilities added recently alanna at valentine working so hard with a smile on her face dr lynn just an amazing presence at carver principal kurtenbach has been working really really hard so i want to thank him for his dedication and hard work and of course uh principal topalian and assistant principal hazlitt thank you so much for everything that you're doing to keep our kids safe and engaged in learning and i had the pleasure of visiting carver elementary school yesterday and getting into some classrooms and it was just a joy to see so many children sitting at their desks and just working engaged in learning and smiles

on their faces i had the opportunity to read a story to a class of kindergarteners yesterday it was the absolute best part of my day and that that's why we're all here um for the love of our children and i think that that's what we all have in common um so i just wanted to to share that with everyone thank you thank you and now student board member um i will also give up my sign and save for the next meeting all right thank you so much communication from the audience regarding matters on the information agenda are to be made at this time this is an information item dr choi okay we are pausing for one minute to take requests regarding matters and the information items on the agenda if you would like to make

your request to speak please press the raise hand icon dial star 9 or submit a public comment card we have 30 seconds remaining if you would like to make a request to speak regarding information items on the agenda please press the raise hand icon dial star 9 or submit a public comment card president ryan we have one request from the san marino teachers association thank you mr choi and i also have one additional comment card so five minutes for each speaker okay thank you san marino teachers association your line is now open good evening thank you so much for your hard work everyone i would like to express so much gratitude for our joseph chang thank you for being so valiant and for doing so much to make sure that our teachers were vaccinated thank

you for being a voice in defense of all children and advocates for parents teachers and students alike you are so very appreciated and so very respected and so very loved thank you i'd also like to express so much gratitude for the many parents who tirelessly uh focus their efforts on getting measures passed and um donations which helped us get back into the classroom i know that we're going to have an opening of school reports from each site but representing our teachers i would like to share that there is lots of joy um but there are there is also there are also many questions and so we look forward to more communication with our esteemed um acting superintendent and with our board president we look forward to a wonderful year and we also look forward to

continuing our relationship in which we've been able to work hand in hand and once again thank you and um we are just very appreciated and um we just like to to share that with you this evening thank you next uh donovan jones good evening again i still have two kids in valentine one in third grade and one in fourth grade um as i told the last board meeting this is the first year for one of my kids and literally my first year therefore as a parent and i've been more involved here because of that i want to say thank you to the principal of valentine she's been absolutely wonderful and welcoming i want to say thank you to president ryan superintendent de la torre and dr steven choi as well i've had very productive conversations

with all of you uh you know the kids are thrilled to be back in school uh classes are great that these are fantastic i was very impressed with the back to school night for my daughter in fourth grade um you know very pleasantly surprised it was absolutely fantastic um now there's a lot of anxiety around your opening of kids as well and part of surfer all message groups with parents and um yeah we all have different opinions and yeah as we go back to school now one of the things i really appreciate in my conversations with principal anna with the administration i think is the thing that this country has become very divided politically you know and the thing i showed earlier about the mission misinformed electorate as i said this is a nonpartisan issue

but these days it's very much if you agree with me you're a good person and if you don't agree with me you're a bad person now uh i don't think you're good i don't think i'm bad for just people that disagree yeah and together we have to fight this all of you are an impossible position and rather than focusing truly on the opening you have to deal with contact racing and other things and things that take away from the whole point you become an educator gonna park you for doing the job that you do yeah it doesn't mean that people can't try to provide different perspectives um now i wanna make very clear because we didn't have that much time in the first go around yeah i thought i made it to the last board

meeting i'm not nt vaccine i'm not anti-coffid call of it is a real thing you know doesn't mean that forgets however it's a risk for kids it is not i've read hundreds of studies about kids you know and in this age group it's not you know we shouldn't waste all this time on all the protocols to make them safer because they're safe as can be follow l.a county guidance forget the rest and just get back to what you signed up to do which is educate our kids and teach them how we can disagree respectfully because if we can do that and let them think for themselves then we really honor the fact that we're the best school district in the state and this state is the fifth largest economy in the world so we should

be very proud what we have here thank you for everything thank you for listening and good evening thank you and now on to our opening of school reports san reno unified esteem principles thank you for being here tonight and this is an informational item the school site principles will provide reports on the opening of the 2021-22 school year at each of the campuses you guys have already decided alana are you coming up first okay dr lynn go ahead thank you for president ryan uh superintendent dr linda deletori and members of the governance team um it is my pleasure to share with the school board that the students and families of carver school are happy to be back full-time for in-person learning while having an option for independent study as we all know a great deal

of work from our teachers and staff have gone into a successful reopening of our school here are some photos taken in the last two weeks that illustrate the attention that we have placed in keeping students safe and also allaying anxieties and worries so our kids can be brought back to school classrooms and indoor spaces are well ventilated windows and doors are open hepa filters are running as well as the hvac filters have been upgraded thanks to our mno to high efficiency filters desks are separated to optimize physical distancing outdoor spaces are used where possible and there are 11 more portable hand washing stations outside there are also multiple hand sanitizer stations all around campus we're also doing weekly cover testing and parents in based on consent every monday and the main thing is kids are

back in school they are engaged and they're learning um also back to school and i was very well attended and there is a general sense of trust that our families have about the school reopening process students are now settling in this is our third week and it is so good to see a level of normalcy returning this year because kids are no longer doing distance learning and that is pretty much it for me um thank you and i would like to turn it over to mrs forrey thank you dr lynn president ryan members of the board superintendent deletorian cabinet thank you so much for the opportunity to report on the opening of school at valentine which one forward thank you okay thank you i will repeat the uh the safety of details that uh dr

lynn expressed about carver those also have been followed at valentine we've been keeping a very very close eye on that and we've been incredibly vigilant i would like to highlight some of the events that we've had since school reopened the first day we had two parent new parent meetings for english and mandarin speaking parents that were very well attended back to school night i'm delighted to announce looked like we had close to 90 percent participation was really well attended and teachers graciously provided all the information to parents who weren't able to be there in person as well we are 620 students strong at valentine and we are 57 faculty and staff seven of whom are brand new teachers to our site and i'm delighted to report to the board that those teachers are doing a

fabulous job uh mr janus just attested to uh attending the meeting one of our new teachers they're working closely as teams they're supporting each other they've become fast friends already and our children are the beneficiaries of that great uh instruction our children are thrilled to be back they love playing with each other they're delighted to see each other they're delighted to be with their teachers and our teachers have worked tirelessly to make connections with their new students and to create really welcoming nurturing and engaging environments for them each day and they're loving it so a lot of creative things are going on in the classroom and then the last thing i wanted to highlight to you is about heart this is our theme and it's an acronym it's about our school-wide behavior expectations we're in

the second year of implementation and our children are really learning what it looks like and feels like to be helpful to be accepting to be empathetic and trustworthy and respectful in every aspect of their school life in every location where they spend time on campus and it's beautiful to see so thank you for this opportunity to report to you this evening thank you mrs foray daryl are you up master napoleon thank you good evening board president shelly ryan board members and student board member as well as our superintendent dr dilla deletori as well as our executive team i'm here with my assistant principal mr hazlitt so uh as you can see on the board and those of you that are listening from home we've got pictures of the greatest middle school in the city of

san marino into middle school so i know we have private schools around us but we are awesome we are proud of the things that we're doing we're excited about the things that we are doing at huntington there's a lot of energy on that campus as you can imagine with 600 and well we just had some withdrawals but that's because students are out of the state and moving out so we have just under 630 students at huntington middle school so we're excited about that we have two new staff members on our campus and that's miss mary hazlitt's who are new assistant principal we're excited to have her and her experiences we also have mr graham lewis who's new to us and so we're super excited about that the retirement though of a long-loved social studies teacher

but mr lewis is doing a great job stepping in and feeling that so we've had some exciting days we had our web day which stands for where everybody belongs and this extension of the linc program offered at san marino high school and so we had our sixth grade students participate that led by our web leaders who did a great job walking around the campus on the first day of school so an extension of the day for the sixth graders who did a great job by just walking and learning the campus just imagine those sixth graders were really fourth graders just a few short months ago well several months ago so to come back on our campus they're young young middle schoolers so our teachers know that we know that and we want them to adapt

as well as well as our 8th graders being young 8th graders and our 7th graders being young 7th graders so we know there's a lot of learning our teachers are excited about the challenge that's before them because they're new in this learning environment with these young people coming through with coming from a distance learning with our virtual academy so how do we get our kids back and engage in school we kicked it off with spirit week which is always great at huntington middle school if you're familiar with the the history behind huntington and kelly keto our asb director and athletic director and really someone who's a side uh administrator on our campus she does such a great job with our students and our staff uh really did a great job with spirit week with asb

so we kicked that off we had to pivot kobit gets in the way of having the fun of using the barth so we were going to have our spirit assembly in the gym with everybody together but due to safety concerns that we've had as a staff in our community we moved that outside so you can see one of the pictures where the kids are lined up we're not in military school we lined up like we do for a fire drill uh which keeps our kids in order and we still conducted our our spirit assembly the kids did great we had staff doing hula hoops and competitions uh the stark won that competition i don't know how but she did it even after coming off the surgery so she did an amazing job but our kids

participated it was fun we had music we had staff come up and share about the great things that are happening so and i'm going to have miss hazel at our ap talk about some of the great things that are happening a little bit different at huntington thank you good evening everyone um i just wanted to share some of the activities as part of my responsibilities is supporting in addition to the discipline it's the activities in the athletics one of the wonderful ideas that mosquito and the staff had is to expand our club options and create some hangouts which are places where students can go and hang out in a teacher's classroom with fellow students that share similar interests and it's not as regimented as a club where they might be um needing to spend money

or do things um outside of the school it's just where they can share interests and some of the ones that we've created this year are pokemon goods games which are mr good has different types of board games that are out there art foxes if they're interested in art fox garden if they're interested in gardening and fantasy sports all types of sports strategy and predictions the other thing that we're doing is starting tomorrow the library will be open for the students to be able to go and print out assignments or use their chromebooks because we don't have them using their electronics during the school day unless it's specifically delegated by a teacher so no cell phones during the day we want them talking and focusing on each other in school but they may go to the

library starting tomorrow at break and at lunch to use their chromebooks and we'll be supervising that to make sure that it's um appropriately staffed and supported and then i just wanted to share that last week i met with all of the physical education pe classes and did the beginning of the year i guess you could call it a rules assembly but we try to not only make it what you shouldn't be doing at the heist at the middle school but what you should be doing so we talk not only about procedures and how do you get from class to class effectively and safely and your food and your locker use but also where again to encourage them to get involved in activities in athletics and groups um also you know reach out get to know

teachers get to know friends expand your circles which is why we're really excited about these hangouts that seem to grow every day so a couple of things have been happening in the last couple weeks thank you thank you oh yeah also you can see just real quick you see the red tents and the red canopies it's also extension of our cafeteria for our sixth graders i know that was a huge concern for our community so we heard that concern i was aware of that going into that because as you know past history has been the sixth graders eat in the cafeteria well our sixth graders are obviously unvaccinated students so that's a huge concern for us so where do they go and how do we supervise them so we use this beautiful area outside of

the cafeteria on the west side so we brought the tables over and we have the canopies and so this was at no expense to the district this is just us being resourceful and mindful of what are the resources that we have what is the materials that we have um and so huge shout out to our staff for being creative and thinking of how we can utilize our space and working with my leadership team and the people at our school to make this happen a huge shout out a huge shout out though it needs to go to really gill and his team i know they're under staff and they're undermined in so many different ways but they did an amazing job putting all this together not only for my site but i know for all the

four sites and so um there's a lot that happened behind the scenes for these young men and women that really worked to get our staff ready to go and so we're excited as you can also see academic support that'll be happening because we know our students need that help and support as they're coming back from distance learning and back into the regular school setting and adjusting and then as well as the covet testing we had approximately 70 students so huntington middle school will be testing on thursdays and the in the afternoons from 11 to four and that is again it's voluntary students need to register actually families need to register their student on the website and then our back to school night is virtual this coming uh thursday uh thursday night and that information will

be coming out tomorrow so i think my parents because i sent out for in person and then we pivot change and adjust um and so and here we are so virtual so thank you very much for your time i want to turn over now to our esteemed high school principal mr jason kurtenbach thank you my colleague said that i get the sum total of the time that they took so i get 15 minutes right now um i'm going to let that speak for itself uh i'm here to represent all of my students all of my staff and all of my parents done a tremendous job we've obviously come back from something that no one knew how to go into and my students have done a phenomenal job jumping right in first day of school during

headlights it was like walking into classrooms and seeing a bunch of kids on zoom and we're trying to get them going and the teachers are trying to get them moving um but what really kind of cracked the ice uh was the first moment they went on breaking the club and they were with each other they were smiling underneath their mask because they all kept them on you started hearing laughing you saw them pulling out their phones and taking selfies with each other you really started to see them reconnect and every day that we see break and lunch you see a little bit more relaxation and a little more engagement and a little more presence where they're feeling comfortable again even with the couple of uh false positives and one positive we persevered through it we

were able to have a great football game we had a lot of people come out for that we've had some great volleyball games already there's too many great things going on and i know that all of you are going to attend via my zoom link that you received hopefully at four o'clock today you're going to see some great choir performances mr jamison will have them spread out throughout the foyer so they can actually sing together and you can hear that we're planning a dance performance so you'll be able to see that and then you'll be able to pop into a bunch of different classrooms throughout the evening and see our teachers give a tour of the rooms that the kids are in every day i'm exceedingly proud of my staff for doing such a wonderful

job everything that we've given them in the past month they've taken they've done everything they can with it and i'm really excited for the rest of the year as well thank you you are always welcome um as long as you call first remember appointment or invitation only right now um but we really do want to see people on campus and in two weeks we'll have our first football game so thank you so much uh i i have a comment okay so since the whole school side principle here i want everyone to share with me do you really like your student do you like really like your the student parent kids please tell me one by one dr lynn my question do you like our school kid you try to make an effort to hotel them

right durian the kobe 19 painted pandemic right right how about the mystery it's my favorite you know i love the kids i just want to reconfirm in this room because i think some of the parents they are confused they are very confused about how we take care of all their kids you know this tool is there you know i i don't want to point out but right now i point out steven going back to the valentine and the picture okay so this the the the in the middle one you know pe hundred percent the kid they take a mask so if these two know and then they will ask their kids said i want you not to take a mask this is ridiculous you know karen is trying to make some unnecessary effort to to

interfere the school teacher the responsibility and they trying to protect the kid so middle school principal and ap please answer my question do you make every effort to protect our the kid 24 7. absolutely love it every day how about ap absolutely how about a valentine school yeah definitely you know the i see the last two weeks you guys you don't make your time you know afro you know individually or on behalf of the the board member we really appreciate each of you but but don't forget from the dashboard you know we are small the crisis you know the couple still don't get infected i think that is another secret so that's reason because even the superintendent or already sent out to community but you know what i don't know how many you get the

phone call to the joseph chain you know when superintendent sent out this my god grandpa ma all the the student parents they call me you know but i i i i don't want to give you too much protein i may not tell you but but you know i will say to give the school district the competence you know we will resolve we will resolve this problem if in the last year you you know you have have a couple cases then people will think wow this is the big crisis but right now after everyone gets a vaccine looks like it is a small hiccup but we still have to pay attention you know just like i walk in for this scuba meeting some parent i don't want to identify she texts me she asked my help

because of the kobe 19 issue she feared that she need to gather the sun the the uh the the answer yes i'm probably more demanding but please is excuse me why i'm demanding usually i'm very shy people i always don't talk you know even people already work with me at 20 years usually i'm very quiet people probably think you know i don't talk but but for this issue i want to help our new superintendent i want to help our compliance officer i want to help my poor president because my poor president did a good job you know the last six months you know from the the school district get a chaos right now recover have a high school board member you know we are full force you know to help the school district i don't

want this this kind of effort and because of kobe 19 every day you know oh there's one and then everyone uh worry so so with that i hope you know each school sign you establish your own protocol when you have the the the kobe 19 case how you want to take care so then then then come out a consistent protocol and then under our superintendent leadership so then we can have a a very good result hey last year i tell you we are the number one yeah it's not just api i think not last year you know dr wilson is leading to other school history about a kobe 19 issue and a mental health issue you know so we need to continue to be the leader in the public health in public health what is

public health because of the the parent they care about their kid so they they trust us so they send their kid to the samanino university so we need to build up our confidence and for them so then we'll continue to send their kid to us we don't want because right now if we don't have the good solid the the protocol and the action i'd action and then they said oh come on i don't want to go to school okay i choose an independent study i don't i don't think the independent study it is a alternative not to come to the school for the learning in independent studies is a it's a set up for some real need for independent study thank you mr chang and that's um okay a great reminder for everyone to do

their part i actually have a question thank you jason um you have in here right we have 30 new staff or staff in new positions right so how has that been in terms of the process of you know integrating them into the school you know uh having them part of you know the titan culture how has that been what steps have you taken in order to implement them well it's definitely been a challenge because last year's so they have some experience with us that's been helpful [Music] they've all been doing a great job of participating obviously beyond that human beings on site but anything that we have had you'll always see our new teachers there they're really excited to be a part of our reputation of course precedes us but really it comes down to

helping through our department chairs from office making sure they know where everything is and then mr casey and i are out in class [Music] we check in on them and then i have scheduled the meetings of our new teaching staff so we touch base on curriculum matters um just the culture in general and we also have a variety of social committee that's getting going so we've got a lot of concept coming up in the next couple of weeks we'll be able to participate in that and then of course nothing short of our amazing kids who you know i've had to stop a couple of times it's challenging getting subs during cocoa and i forget sometimes you walk out of class and kids go thank you for teaching you yeah thank you so they're they're kind

of getting uh the idea of what it means um it's been going really well these last two weeks last year was the biggest challenge but all of those teachers and counselors have been doing a really great job thank you go ahead mrs trump um i actually had a question i was wondering about our independent studies because we didn't address that i'm just that's coming up with um no okay um and it's more long it's a simple question it's just along the lines of whether or not there's opportunity for students to participate in any of this in terms of engagement or um is there any connection are there any connections being made in that way can we wait till um we put it on the agenda rather than doing it here because it doesn't have anything

to do with opening schools well it's reopening schools but it's an element that we aren't really i think it actually would be a very good question to ask the four principles that for the portions of their student body at their schools that are in independent study what efforts are being made so that those principles can reach out and and and merge those independent study students into campus life to any extent that's a little more than i was asking but sure i'm guess i'm just wondering how they fit within the reopening structure at this point that'll be a question for linda sure so it's just so i'm understanding the question correctly michonne can you repeat the question um i guess i'm just looking for a general idea of where the reopening of schools would fall under

all of this because i'm seeing our four sites but nothing about our independent study students and they are still very much our students so i'm just wondering where they fall in terms of that structure and if there's opportunities for engagement or to be make sure not just that they're learning academically but that they're still engaging and connecting right so um independent study started on the first day of school um we put out the survey in late july and closed the survey closed all the requests surveyed closed on august 6th so we had quite a few parents who had requested independent study um we we continued to receive requests after the deadline of the survey and we're continuing to enroll students as parents request again for students who have a health condition that would put their

students put them at risk by attending in person have the option of attending the independent study and so school started on the first day just like students who started school in person on campus and students are continuing to enroll in independent study they start many of them have started on campus in person and then have transitioned into independent study and so it does take a few days to make sure that we have their courses aligned they're enrolled in apex they're able to secure all their materials from their home school to get them ready for independent study so they are working under the supervision of an independent study teacher for elementary and secondary so they are working closely with their teacher they are getting acclimated to independent study as it looks very different than distance learning

that we had last year sb 98 was sunseted june 30th and so we are no longer required to offer distance learning the new mandate is independent study for school districts and with re-engagement we're working closely with our independent study teachers to see what that would look like i know that often parents are reaching out to one another within independent study they've made that request to make sure that the students have that engagement piece but again parents who have requested independent study indicates that their students health would be put at risk by attending in person so i'm not sure you know if they would feel comfortable having their students in person you know for a social activity or any type of extracurricular activity at school because the main intent of having them an independent study is

because they're concerned about their health by being in person so i guess that would similar then to what mr clack is referring to are there ways that we can look at ways to engage with them virtually then so that they do still feel part of the community of their school absolutely so the students are still enrolled in our sis system uh power school so they are continuing to receive all the communications from the school sites as if they were attending in person so they're very well aware of all the extracurricular activities back to school night you know events that are held on campus so they're aware of all of those events and they are able to attend those extracurricular events any other okay i'd like to ask a question so so when a student when

it comes to the the reopening um we have students that are on campus that are obviously under the uh the column of each of the various principles and um when a student is in independent study are they still technically a student of a specific campus or okay so a valentine student that goes into independent study is still a valentine student correct okay so that that's kind of the question i'm asking is with all of the counseling services and the wellness center services and the the on-campus activities at each of the four campuses if we could maybe hear a little bit of of how the four campuses are reaching out to that population to ensure that they still feel as though they are a full-fledged member of that campus community if i may um part of

those conversations will happen a requirement of ab30 for independent study is that the independent study teacher meets with the parent and the student to review a learning agreement a written learning agreement and during that learning agreement conversations are had with regards to any type of support whether it's social emotional support any type of counseling support that's brought to the independent study teachers attention that will be addressed and um you know they're all aware of the services that we have within our district you know the wellness center any type of academic support um and those are things that will be put into place once they're identified or there's the need for it absolutely because the interaction with our independent study teachers is um for certain grade levels it's on a daily basis right and so our

teachers are the three teachers are constantly communicating with the students and constantly communicating with the parents as well but is there anything being done by the campuses to connect with and and at least invite these students to the campuses i'd love to hear from the principals what are the principles doing to connect with these independent study students to let them know that they are full-fledged members of the school on our community because they're not there that they're elected to not go on campus for those specific reasons but they do know in my conversations that they reach out to me with the families and with the assigned teacher when they're ready to absolutely those things are still available um from the communications that i've had with a lot of um parents um they may have concerns

about being in a classroom in a in a closed classroom with 20 or 30 other students in very close proximity indoors um but being on a outdoor track team is a totally different situation um they may feel as though there is a certain level of health risk being indoors all day long in classrooms but would be very uh willing to maybe consider some sort of outdoor activities so um i would just hope that we are we're doing what we can to reach out to these students to let them know it's not a situation that that we're here if and when you come back to campus um and and come out of an independent study program but here's what we're doing while you're in that independent study program and you you are welcome to come on

now because indoor health concerns are very different than outdoor activities and um and we may have uh we may miss opportunities to reach some children in some very special ways by if if we're not mindful that we can still connect with them and at least offer them on campus activities for example the huntington breakfast for example that's an outdoor activity we want our independent study program families to to know that they are absolutely welcome to be part of that program and um so that's that's the type of thing that i'm i'm looking at and i'm just using that as an example i mean there's examples at every campus but um if i could ask um uh mr crittenbach if i could learn a little bit i know that in the counseling uh department that we

have um new new people new counselors to our tour schools and and i think i would imagine maybe one of the the biggest challenges is to learn have those counselors learn our students know our students um because some of them will be graduating this year or next year maybe looking for letters of recommendation and so on so what what kind of efforts and i understand it's there's a lot going on but um what kind of efforts are is the high school doing with the counselors to try to get out and learn and have these counselors have the opportunity to learn who our students are as soon as possible [Music] able to drop classes um we're just now going to get to the month of september basically seniors um [Music] it's disrespectful by the stated [Music]

but that was harsh we're lucky because we're as great as we are and um the majority of those kids are students who can't attend school because they're not here they can't get back because they're travel bans they're too far away but still that is are we doing anything more other than stay in communication with all of our students um so it sounds like there's a lot of interest in this topic and so i'd like to make the recommendation that we put it on the agenda for a later date um so that we can move on um president ryan is that okay that would be great um the board thank you okay and we can bring more information back and a presentation to the board it's obvious there's a lot of interest around this topic so

we'll get back to you okay thank you just want to thank thank each of the principals i know that that uh the four of you are are tasked with some some pretty uh dynamic situations fluid situations and um and a lot of work so i really appreciate what each of the four of you have done and all of your teams at your campuses thank you thank you um next um the type 11b is titan wellness center update informational item hello i'm tanya o'handy and i'm the wellness counselor over at san marino high school um good evening uh school board a superintendent dr richter dr choi thank you so much and our wonderful lovely student representative who's been hanging in there um so we do have a couple of slides of information i will go ahead

and just address one thing that came up i have actually met with hannah and i did share with her about the resources we have in the wellness center and different resources to address wellness should she come across a student that might benefit from something so you know it's been really helpful because she was actually physically there on our campus so i know the counselors were talking with her and i also had the opportunity to meet with her and i think that was really helpful so we do want to look out for the wellness of all of our students here in san marino here's just a little bit of information with regards to summer so during the summer for those of you i know there's familiar faces here last year we really implemented school-based mental health

services at the high school we focused even though we were virtually we were still able to get ourselves some some interns get ourselves some referrals we actually ended up with 106 referrals last year for students engaging in services and that included all of the school sites those referrals came from students they came from parents they came from teachers so we're really proud of that so during the summer we continued with our services we actually sent a flyer out to our elementary school sites which we had not done before and we had 19 new referrals in the summer when we weren't even actually there we had three elementary students with the parent directly referred we had two huntington students parent also referred and then we had 14 at the high school with nine continuing so i

think our our goal this year is to really focus on making sure that we are messaging that we are communicating that we want to address wellness needs that we are communicating that we understand has been very difficult for our students and our parents having students at home as long as they have been at home so as we move into this robust school year we're very happy to be in person we think it's critical for the mental health and well-being of our students um so this far we're looking at is having actually nine total interns across the school so we have some we have bachelors of social work interns i was looking to put one at each school site to support the staff there they can provide one-on-one behavioral interventions they can do sel in the

classrooms they can do tier two small group interventions and then we also have that additional person to help process those referrals then we'll have two msw masters of social work students who are also obtaining a pps credential in school social work so that is critical because they can provide therapy services they can do all of the things that a bsw has but then they also focus on that certificated credential which requires that they assist in sst's ieps and attendance so that is definitely something that is welcome here especially as we have students might be opting to stay home one day or another because of social emotional mental health stuff not necessarily because of the actual illness and then we'll have one regular msw intern and we have two mft trainees that provide only therapy services

so how can you access the titan wellness center it's a referral it's online and you can easily access it through the san marino high school website and you can find it if you go through the district so what we want to do is always make this information accessible to all i was able to i had the opportunity to present for professional development and actually one of the aides that attended she went through all of the websites to figure out all of the past to reach the titan wellness center and then she emailed me that information not only to my email but also to the titan wellness center email so what we have come to find out and me being now in person for the first time is the school staff is really wants to embrace

supporting mental health services and i have to commend the new counseling team at the san marino high school because what is happening is we're having conversations about wellness we're focusing on tier one interventions and how do we push into the classroom and how do we make a presence i can't speak to what that might have looked like prior to my arrival but i definitely see that happening now and we're having those valuable conversations that's kind of it real brief i i have a question actually the last school meeting there is a budget no another party they they have a spending on on the titan wait only center so i i i ask in the school history but so far i haven't got an answer so i would like jason so we made a request to

add additional space to the wellness center um and thanks to mr cardenas back here we just got the uh the new windows up so it's the upstairs portion so the frosted windows went in today and that means that the library is now protected from the dust that would be going up for the drywall so we imagine it could be done as early as so we've got those rooms in they're all framed they just have to drywall and finish them and so that will give us three individual therapy rooms so that the interns can have students meet with them in private which is something we anticipated would be an issue and it actually was it's currently an issue and actually like sixth period is a real hot time to meet with students and we've actually had

to cancel students and move students because we could not find a private space to meet with them so the additional space is that you you take from the extension to the livestream library so that's now all the ones center and we're going to reconfigure probably a little bit of the current wellness center to add additional um space in there as well so so how many square feet for a new addition i don't know so so it can i'm gonna say so it can then divide to how many additional room three run yeah [Music] yeah so we've got that space so the the figure that so is that including for furniture or sunder we need to use existing furniture we're just going to use what we have we have plenty of leftover furniture in the site

right now so we're going to make do with what we have okay thank you any other questions and if you would like to come by and take a tour you're more than welcome too we'll invite you when we're all done with the auditions so you can see something nice yeah in a few weeks we'll definitely put that invited thank you thank you and we follow protocols before we yes and bite you or you'll make an appointment so beginning of the year professional development dr lana richter please an update thank you thank you president ryan members of the board student board member tonight i am pleased to share with you a brief update of our professional development learning opportunities that were held at the beginning at the start of the 21 22 school year as well

as share next steps so before i begin i want to be sure to thank those who were truly instrumental in making our professional learning days very successful their willingness to support us on these days is very much appreciated mr papalian and his entire huntington middle school staff are hosting and allow us allowing us to use their auditorium and facilities and teacher classrooms on both days miss carol thompson our food services director for and her staff for providing coffee and snacks on both of those days dr troy our technology and our technology team for offering to share their expertise and making sure all of our equipment was ready to go on both of those days as well as our members of our district staff for helping with all the details and making sure that everything went

smoothly lastly our participants we could not have had a more successful professional development learning opportunity without all of our participants and we were very grateful that everyone took advantage of both of these days friday august 6th we hosted our first day of our two-day professional development for the start of the school year for august 6th partakes participation was optional and it was offered to all certificated staff and educational assistants the professional learning was intentionally designed to support teachers as they returned to school for the 21 22 school year a menu of various learning topics were purposely developed and offered throughout the entire day allowing all participants to self-select sessions based on interest and need using sign up genius the professional learning model was designed as a 4x7 model inclusive of four time frames in which

six to seven different topics were held simultaneously sessions were repeated in the afternoon to allow participants to take advantage of as many sessions as possible session topics for august 6th included instructional technology english language development social emotional well-being and mental health special education and diversity equity and inclusion it was great to see many of our teachers and educational assistants join and engage in this collaborative professional learning opportunity overall we were pleased to see that many of our sessions were filled to capacity with a total of over a hundred participants just on august 6th and these participants included teachers new teachers to san marino unified educational assistants and administrators so we're really excited to see the turnout we had on august 6th and again it was an optional professional learning day here's just a quick overview

of what the schedule looked like it is a little small i did share this with the board in one of my weekly memos and as you can see the colors represent all the different sessions and the four time frames allowing us to offer six or seven different sessions throughout the day and i it's important to show that as the schedule covers of a wide range of various topics they really help support our teachers in continued professional development to further accelerate our lcap goals our district goals which include exemplary exemplary teaching and learning flourishing learning environments and authentic and meaningful connections i would be remiss if i did not recognize and thank our amazing presenters for this day we had danielle blatchley our new eld tosa mikhail papadopoulos who presented on web redesign john tran raymond

chen quakong who presented on instructional technology miss tanya l hindi who presented on social emotional learning eric negrowi who helped our teachers navigate power school miss sandy johnson attorney who presented on special education and dr catherine edwards from laco who presented on diversity equity and inclusion so these next few slides just give us a brief visual of what the days look like for august 6th this is a morning welcome where we had coffee and light snacks for our participants pictures of some of our sessions that were run and a few more sessions that were run throughout the day and again this was all on august 6th our optional professional development day august 9th that following monday was our second professional learning day for all teachers it was wonderful to see everyone in person and excited

about learning for the day the morning began with our keynote speaker dr katie martin dr katie martin is the author of learner-centered innovation and evolving education she's also the chief impact officer at learning center collaborative dr martin teaches in the graduate school of education at high tech high is on the board of real world scholars we're excited about her presentation because her presentation was inspirational and impactful she continues to support schools and districts in building student connections strategies for effectively personalizing learning building student agency and creating conditions and opportunities to shift to learner-centered models of education that really empower all levels of learners these strategies and approaches are critical and will serve invaluable as students return to school after more than a year of distance learning we are very excited and honored to have her

join us and set the academic tone for the remainder of the 21-22 school year you do you keep the video tape on this speech or no um we may have it yes we may um okay i'm gonna move on to the next section of august 9th so the remainder of the day for august 9 continued with miss elise yerke who was a coordinator three of inclusive literacy by design of the los angeles county office of education miss yerke works in the division of curriculum and instructional services as a udl implementation specialist and an active member of center for applied special technology also known as cast and the california coalition for inclusive literacy she presented on udl and as we know udl serves as a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all learners

by creating inclusive classrooms and focusing on presenting various opportunities and ways for students to learn as well as demonstrate mastery of their learning we're grateful for ms europe's assistance during this day for presentation but also for helping our district secure a two-year professional learning grant again focused on universal design for learning which we'll be engaging in for the twenty one twenty two and twenty two twenty three school year so next steps we will continue to focus on developing multi-tiered systems of support a framework that helps teachers and educators provide academic and behavioral strategies for students with various needs through implementation of strategies such as universal design for learning and pbis positive behavior interventions and supports to really maximize the development of curriculum supports and opportunities that will allow all students to thrive as part of

our two-year professional learning grant with laco all schools will engage in monthly professional learning through laco all four schools will have an opportunity once a month to engage in professional learning for these next two years our first session was actually held this afternoon at huntington middle school from three o'clock to four o'clock and i was fortunate enough to join that session i think it went really well elementary schools will continue their professional learning with pbis a plan to begin pbis at the secondary level will begin in the year 22-23 and this is year two of year three for our elementary schools with pbis and that concludes the presentation of our brief update is a little longer but i'm happy to take any questions that you may have at this point all right any questions comments

i thank you for that exceptional presentation um very impressive in terms of um the cadre of expertise that's within our district the depth and wealth of our professional development and the continuing work that you do in terms of keeping us on the cutting edge in terms of innovation i really appreciate the bringing forth the student-centered learning and and that so thank you dr richter next we have huntington middle school outdoor education this is an informational item uh principal napoleon and vice principal hazlett all right well thanks for having me back again thank you to board president shelly ryan board members and student board member as well as our superintendent dr linda deletori and cabinet so i'm here to inform you about outdoor education at huntington middle school i know this is a long lasting tradition

that provides wonderful opportunities for the young people at huntington as well as gives their parents a break of a week of having their kids outdoors and i think that's the biggest focus is that our students are outdoors and so this is something that has gone on prior to my time here at huntington but i know for many members in our community and many staff members that have kids in our community this is something that really develops them as a young person in middle school and one of the reasons why they have it at the beginning of the year is for those students to really bond and get connected into the school community also why it happens at the beginning of the year is because before our students get engaged in all the wonderful in just

opportunities that they have be it either in sports or athletics as well as within the clubs in the organizations that happen throughout the year and also during that time of choir and band performances and orchestra performances that our vapor program does in the programs that we have so over the course of the several years you see that hms students have had the opportunity to go on week-long adventures to explore the outdoors and so um and as in years past sixth grade has gone to wonder valley out in the clovis area and then uh the seventh grade has gone to catalina and then eighth grade goes to paly institute years before that i believe it was um of the time i had um astro camp but now we we're at pali uh for eighth grade the

reason that we're doing wonder valley that you see there it says in parentheses it says wonder valley 2021 is because our seventh graders did not have that opportunity last year they did not have the opportunity to undervalue and one of the things that's really nice about wonder valley for our sixth graders which this year seventh graders did not get is because it brings carbon valentine students together and it allows them to develop those relationships that are lasting for the three years that they're at huntington middle school so since those students missed that mr doc at the time dr cashel and i pulled our families they said hey listen what would the opportunity comes again for outdoor education would you like to have wonder valley or do you like outdoor ed and also with our parents

have some some feedback in that as well and our community felt that they would like their kids those being our sixth graders gonna be seventh graders this year would really like to do uh wonder valley so we listened to that and so it's why you we're doing so in case you're wondering why we're doing wonder valley for sixth and seventh and so i think do i have the power to next slide okay so what does it look like what's the partition participation look like knowing where we're at in these challenging times uh what does it look like right now so i'm here to to before you as your as your principal at huntington middle school to give you numbers so what does it look like right now and just where we're at what's the interest

level and so right now out of 214 sixth graders we have currently 115 sixth grade families that have signed up for huntington middles uh for for wonder valley and then out of our seventh graders out of 197 seventh graders you can see our numbers of 168 and then for eighth graders you can see those numbers 178 out of 215 students so well over um just close to 80 of each of our classes are really excited about being part of outdoor education and so the minimum number to attend for each of these camps that we have guaranteed is 170. so you can see really where our interest level that we're not far off the mark here and we just had just a few more and talking um to michelle boking we just had a few more

signups for sixth grade so that says a lot and so what are our numbers of our chaperones so who goes on these trips well our wonderful staff does they participate in these bonding moments with our kids as develop relationships my staff knows i'm big on three things no their name no their face know their story and when you know that and get students believe in that and they know that you know that you're going to get more of when it comes time to teach them the variables of math to teach them about ancient civilization and about proper grammar or proper writing whatever it may be in the discipline that our teachers work with our students is so we're looking at 10 to 12 chaperones for wonder valley some of those chaperones yes are our teachers

but they're also our instructional aides because we do have students that um have special needs or need an assistance and so we do have our wonderful aides that go with us for pali because it's older and those eighth graders obviously are a little bit more independent um it's about eight to ten of our staff members go uh from uh up to pali institute so the cost of those trips as you can as you know many of you maybe have had your child go on these trips so for wonder valley it's 750 per family and that for poly is 600. if we look at any point in time that we've looked that we might need to postpone to the spring there is no cost for us to postpone our trips um however there is a cost

to if we do cancel and that is because of our down payments um that need to happen for us for pali and for winter valley our current dates as we're slated for right now that we're scheduled to to do uh for eighth grade and it's a miss type for me so excuse me it should be 9 27 and it says 10 to 10 one of it is september 27th through the october 1st so i apologize for that for seventh grade it's october 4th through october 8th and these are monday through fridays and then for sixth grade it's october 11th through october 15th now i know with covet and in the best interest for our school community are there possible alternative dates so i want to inform you that yes there are but we're not the

only middle school though though we are the greatest middle school i believe in the state of california as well as nationwide and also our plug-in that we're going to be recognized as a national blue ribbon school so we should get dibs right well there's other schools that have dibs too so we want to make sure that we want to make the right decision for the best interests of our students and our staff and our school community so there are alternative dates miss hazel has been working really hard working with these two campsites and organizations to make sure that we're up to speed with dates and as well as availability so you can see that there are times in late march and early april as well as times in mid to late april however um there

are possible dates if you look at pali there are possible dates that we can go in december but outdoor ed in december up in the san bernardino mountains is one word and that's cold and so we want to make sure our students are safe and they have a great time out in the outdoors especially up in the san bernardino mountains for pali institute those alternative dates though in december are a saturday through a wednesday so that could pose a problem for our families as well as for our instructional staff that does go that means that our instructional staff would be pulled from our their families um on those saturdays and sundays through a wednesday and then that could impact our instructional days for thursday and fridays because we're coming back and then therefore that's attendance

and we want definitely want to make sure that our students are in school on thursday and friday why because good old those three letters a d a so next slide okay so who's with us at wonder valley so when we're up there who's joining us well your guys aren't but who else is nobody so in warrior under valley it's just hms that's the great part about our relationship with this camp we're the only ones there what do i mean by we're the only ones there are no other outside organizations no they're schools those are little kitty camps it is just the huntington foxes and our staff we're the only ones there where do those students eat all the eating is outside the activities are outside yes they strongly encourage our mass to be worn just

simply like what we're doing right now at huntington middle school that would happen for both sixth and seventh grade at pali institute um hms is not the only one there up at pali however we will have in the entire eating i know that one of the concerns is eating they do have an outdoor eating area also but they also have the entire what they call the huck which is the the cafeteria but one of the entire floors will be just specifically for huntington middle school to be at no other school will be there they have another facility where those little small the smaller schools that are there when they're there will be moved to that site uh while we're there there's no sharing of equipment over materials um while we're up there outdoors for poly

institute everything is done outside in regards to wonder valley there are a few activities that happen inside but those are in larger rooms that are well ventilated and students will need to have their masks on when they're indoors for those activities staffing what does the staffing look like at wonder valley what does the staffing look like at pali institute some of the greatest members that we have as kids when we go to these camps is meeting with our camp counselor and who are cancer they might have nicknames like stinger or boss man or they all have code names because they're not allowed to give their real names but the camp counselors at wonder valley and pali are their staff our staff just go as guidance and supervision but those counselors are assigned those counselors are

assigned to each group and a pod of students what does that mean so you'll have a group of students of anywhere between 8 to 12 to 10 possibly up to 16 students and one counselor would be assigned to that so if board president shelly ryan is a counselor she would be assigned to the same eight girls within her group if board pres board member c joseph chang you are a counselor up there at wonder valley you are in charge of the same eight boys and you would hope that i would not be one of your eight boys because that would be a handful for you but you would be in charge of those and the same for mr clackey you would have the same boy and you would travel with those students throughout the entire

time if board member nam jack becomes a counselor on site she would not share any of shelly ryan student board member nam jack would have her own students and that would they would stay with her in fact that would be the same count counselor that would sleep in that same dorm area with them so there's no changing of camp counselors amongst the pods and the great thing about that it's not because of coba they've always operated that way at both pali institute and wonder valley and i can speak to that because i've been there not as a counselor not as a camp counselor not as a and not as a camper but as someone who went three years ago with huntington middle school um and you can see i shared that the the both staffs

are vaccinated these are privately owned organizations so the wunder valley staffs are vaccinated as well as the staff at pali and their staff are tested weekly um the one thing that's important for us at as as we go up there the the covet protocols what does that look like now that we're in this challenging in time so what's the information that we have regarding the protocols will wonder value for sixth and seventh is requiring a proof of vaccination or a negative cova test three days prior to us leaving on the trip so what does that look like for here at huntington middle school we know now right now with omnipathology that we test every thursday at huntington middle school well that wouldn't work so working with dr choi were able to get testing on friday

well wait a second what if we test friday we find out we have a kid a case on sunday so we're really working on not only testing friday so we get those results sunday but also testing our students that are planning on going on this trip testing earlier in the week as well so we're working with dr choi with that because we want to make sure if we have to do the contact tracing anything comes up we can get we can get in front of it so we want to plan ahead parents may upload their students vaccination cards to the um sm usd privet system which uh the hms health clerk uh mr vanessa palacios will help manage manage and monitor parents will also need to send a copy of their child's vaccination card directly

to wander volley along directly to wonder valley along with the health sheets now this will obviously be different for sixth and seventh because several of our seventh graders are vaccinated but we do know with sixth grade that they are not uh those students with vaccination cards will take the pcr test that friday before and i have touched base on that that's one of the bullet points in there and then hms will be working with omni for any additional earlier testing dates as i've touched on and for pali they strongly recommend proof of vaccination they're not requiring it but i would like it to make it a protocol for us that we can show that but then any student that does not vaccinate that they show proof of a negative test prior to leaving and departure

of going up the mountain for this trip so the transportation how do we get there so as you know wonder valley those students travel in luxury and those beautiful lowered air ridden charter buses uh they're not going to vegas um those are the ones that these are going straight to wonder valley in the clovis those nice big buses those students have with plush seats they don't have it goes from like that to then the little buses to catalina and then school buses up to pali the kids feel like they get downgraded those those wonder valley beautiful buses are really nice they get to watch movie students or two per seat their seat belts on those seats they are strongly encouraged and will need to be masked while they're there and then while they do take

their pit stop they have their snack they can take their their mask off they can have their snack and then they're back on the bus same for poly it's two students per seat um those are seat belted buses as well and those are the standard uh school buses that you see that travel in our community today um the mask rules while we're up there at wonder valley in pali you wear it on the bus uh that's extremely important when picking up food in the cafeterias uh they're not required when they're sleeping but strongly encouraged and i know that'll be hard for some of our skids i think it's hard for those of us that would have to try to do that but it is strongly heard but not required we wear masks when involved in

an indoor activity so that's extremely important and students are stronger to wear them at all times i know that'll be much easier to to to recommend for our sixth grade students our sixth grade students at huntington middle school have done an outstanding job adjusting to this i must commend them greatly even our seventh and eighth graders even though they don't have to they still do when when they're when they're out and about um at lunchtime they do an amazing job but when they're out in the field and they're doing what they need to do and they're being where they're supposed to be they do a great job honoring these roles so if these are things that we ask of our students they will do it so they can have these experiences before them so i

want to thank you and obviously go foxes uh i have a question uh so stephen maybe you can answer so for the sixth grade how many uh student original vaccination do we know we currently don't have that data however um we do have a system that we can actually ask the students and parents to upload their vaccination cards so we will have that data so for the requirements if one go to wonder valley so you ask them to get a vaccination so either like these two parents they were protests then they said the loa county doesn't have a guidance so then what happened well this is these are wonder valley requirements these aren't huntington middle school or san marino requirements these are the requirements for us to participate in this trip these are you know

you know the non-reasonable the parent we are challenging on this issue right well the parents will be prepared i i'm just after the two meetings right now i need to discount some of the parents you know you know because they have to their own way right well the parents will have to make a tough choice because the reality is is that wonder valley wonder valley is requiring so one of two things you you assume you assigned me as a counselor you i'm that group will be more safe okay so well thank you because because i know how to do it but some may not know how to do it right you know well the good news is is that the staff there is vaccinated they require that for their staff as i shared earlier the

other news is like i shared that this is a requirement of wonder valley this is not a requirement of san marino unified school district this is not a requirement of huntington middle school this is their requirement so if any child that gets on a bus that's going to participate in outdoor education at these camps they need to have one of two things a negative cova test before they get on that bus as well as a vaccination card so if they don't have the vaccination that's a family choice and a family decision then go up with a negative cova test now we know that that's not realistic for sixth grade so what is a negative cova test and if a family feels like that's not something they want to participate in then they just choose not

to go and that's okay that's okay and that has to be okay yes have parents already been informed of these protocols when they signed up or are these things that are still just being rolled out these are these are some things that i've just rolled out that we've been in constant contact with and that so as we roll this out as maybe some parents are listening to the night listening tonight that might be okay that's really that's really it's really nice for us to hear because that makes us a little bit more comfortable about maybe sending our child on this trip so on that note then what would be the um process if a person decided they would want to withdraw is that possible and how does that affect that minimum number we need to

hit well it's possible they if they choose to draw then they'll get their money refunded and then because of the cost in the district we have to make that 170 mark and so then we would have to pay that addition but it wouldn't be at a cost of the district because this is 100 percent funded by our families this is at no cost to the district and then what helps us offsets the cost is our pta donations which we're extremely thankful for because they help cover the cost of our transportation but this is 100 percent funded by our families this is no cost to the district so how come the parry not not forced to have a vaccination he said i strongly recommend the pool of fascination that's for pally that's their decision that's where

that but again they have older groups that are there of anywhere from middle you know older middle schooler groups when i say that for seventh or eighth grade uh kids that are able to be vaccinated 12 and older and then high school groups can i ask um so my understanding is our district is following l.a county department of health protocols and the l.a county department of health protocol requires that students when indoors have a mask on i assume at wonder valley or poly nobody's sleeping outside correct correct okay so we're gonna have a bunch of students how many students are in a cabin usually roughly between eight to ten but we're really trying to minimize that down to eight okay so we've got eight students and l.a county department health protocols requires and our district

policy requires that when a student is indoors they have a mask on they're going to be in a bed for eight hours a night or however many hours and what are we going to do to make sure that we're following our district policy that when a child is indoors sleeping they have the mask on it's a great question and one that we have only the one we can answer is we're going to require the students to have their mask on while they're indoors what that would be when your eyes are closed and you're going night night when you're sleeping i will say this that the students are extremely tired of being there through the day but i also know that these are young people and it's hard to keep your mask on when you're sleeping

well there's no there's to put someone on a mask patrol that would be really hard um and so i don't know if i don't have the direct answer for that for as far as what's the requirement when they're indoors to have a mask on so when they put when they when you lay down you put your head in that on the pillow and you're in that sleeping bag put your mask on yeah uh i mean i i appreciate it and i understand it's a difficult situation right because um you're gonna have kids sleeping but the the indoor mask mandate uh from the department of public health and from our district policy requires that there be a mask on at all times and so um if we know that we're gonna have every kid participating in

an indoor activity which has a very high likelihood of not having a mask on for hours at a time and we only need 15 minutes of of exposure to somebody for a close contact we risk a lot of kids being sick um so i i love these outdoor uh education activities and i know the kids love it and the families love it and they were great uh and and they will continue to be great um and they've been great for a very long time prior to covet uh but now we're in code and we're in a different environment where it's it's very serious and and and very you know serious health risks so so i don't i don't has the department of public health given any guidance that children are allowed to sleep without masks

on that's a great question groups of eight eight to 16 people because i'm not aware of anything no and i that's a great question and one i'm not aware of and i've looked for but they follow the guidance that they have with another camp guidelines that they have in the underneath the organizations that they're part of but again sorry darrell um if we are requiring students to either show their vaccination or be tested right prior to going and we do know that the camp staff are all vaccinated yes they are they're that's a requirement for them to be at the camp so those are protective measures being put into place to mitigate right the threat of exposure or or transmission right and then their their staff is also tested weekly even this half that the

staff that is vaccinated right but i'll tell you what i what i see potentially happening parents that don't want masks on their children indoors quite frankly would have a very valid argument that you just let my child be indoors for eight hours every night with no mask and why is that different from a classroom where we're only in there for 50 minutes and what you will see in my prediction is a complete rebellion potentially to mask mandates indoors because we have just violated our district our own district policy with indoor mass mandates and our own stated policy that we are following the la county department of public health mass command so um what i would say to that is that this is not a mandatory um school sponsored trip this is a voluntary parent parent-sponsored

trip that the school is coordinating and organizing and even though we do have um you know insurance to to cover any kind of exposure that should occur and i think that we're telling parents right that this is what's happening and so parents can make the decision as to whether or not they want their children to go on the trip i guess what i'm saying is we're giving our parents choice and and it's not we're not giving school credit for these trips right so it's not a not necessarily a school sponsored you know we're paying for this trip and we're going to give you a grade um for participation uh which sometimes happens for field trips and activities that are are related to outdoor education and this is completely separate from that so i i think

that as long as parents know what the risk is and they're making informed and well-educated decisions it i mean we're making it as safe as we possibly can [Music] by requiring vaccination or testing right and we do know for certain that all staff at these camps are fully vaccinated that is great okay because that is a that is a question i have asked because i would if i'm sending my child up because those are like i've shared with the kids local apprentice i'm your legal guardian i'm responsible for you and when when ms hazel's up there she's responsible for those children our staff we're responsible this is not something that we take lightly at all i'm just here to present this information before you and also just so you know as far as wonder valley

is concerned and in the last conversations we have with pali but specifically with wonder valley they've had no cases with kobet up there right now um i can't speak to paulie specifically but the last time i spoke with them which was last week they had none in my conversation with him i still but i do hear what you're saying board member collectively i still don't understand if if we can be true to our district policy our stated district policy that we will follow mass mandates for the l.a county department of public health if if i may if i may add the the la county department of public health does not mandate masking while sleeping um it's in their uh protocols for overnight camps la uh county department of public health specifically states that masks should

not be worn when sleeping do they provide any other recommendations like one student per they they do here if i may read it says um space them at least three feet apart and place attendees head to toe to ensure distance between their faces masks should not be worn when sleeping and the camps are following that guidance correct yeah i could follow through with that yes so this is l.a county department of public health what i don't know is whether or not um these private operators of these camps are following l.a county or if they're following the county that they are in but but does the department of public health i'm sorry i know gonna come to the mic for those of you that are listening at home thank you no they they do follow their

county guidelines um and they do follow our county guidelines i don't know about wonder valley i mean we can follow up on that but i have a camp coming up they are following those and they were just reviewed in late july july 21st my camp was i got a hundred percent on all the guidelines provided for overnight camps so they're completely set up i'm talking about my camp right now my assumption is that these camps are either following something similar but since they're in different counties we should pull their counties and see what they're listed out as pali is is that san bernardino uh san bernardino fresno wonder valley san bernardino is pali right so they're gonna have to follow those guidelines right now i'm talking mine is la county and that's their guidelines is

what dr choi said and ours has been vetted by the county because they have to go and verify that they have these set up at least in la um and we actually sent a parent to our camp to review it as well so we had a parent go up to our camp and look it over um when you're saying your camp you're talking about a san marino high school camp yeah it's a requirement it's a it's in one night overnight choir camp how many students are going to be in that that's the thing we're discussing so i understand but because mr curtin box up i'm just trying to understand those students have separate rooms we have to get their county guidelines and then we have to verify whether or not they're following them which i'm

sure there's protocol because we're getting checked right the county checks our schools they're checking all of these we can make an assumption that they're checking if not that might assist us in making a decision how many students will be in a room sleeping on your camp uh that that i'm not sure um that i would have to find out it would follow the protocols according to dr choi to try to limit those numbers and then keep them head to how's that work head to foot head to foot the problem that i that i see though is that um regardless of where they are in the world our students are san reno unified school district students and we have a san marino unified school district policy that we follow for our students the la county department

of public health no matter where they are in the world because they're doing a school activity for a school that is located in la county um and some counties up in clovis or they may look at things very differently than l.a county and and the way our parents look at it um and the way our board has looked at it because the policy that we set forth was we follow l.a county department of public health the only thing i would jump in and say is i think the difference is at the camp the kids are tested or mandated to show vaccination cards at the school they're not so at the school we're a little more conservative because we don't know who's vaccinated who's not we haven't validated any of that so we take extra protocols

here but when we vet the kids with the tests and the vaccination cards we feel we've um checked right for their health as a week prior to attending so i think that might be a little different yeah who who employs the bus drivers the the bus drivers are chartered for wonder valley that's a charter group that's employed by winter valley and then we do the buses for pali and are they vaccinated or tested uh that i do not know who the company is that will be taking the students up at this point in time i do not know and i would have to believe if you're transporting children driving a school bus being a former school bus driver which i still have my commercial be licensed in case any of you want to go anywhere

um i'm vaccinated and i will take you guys we needed to have an opportunity to ask some questions thank you mrs jim um so dr choi are you telling me right that the l.a county department of public health with respect to overnight camps says no masks for children while they're sleeping but there's a certain scenario that they would like in terms of how they would like the children situated when they are sleeping is that correct that is correct okay and those are their guidelines is that correct uh these are l.a county guidelines for overnight camps and in general l.a county guidelines uh reflect what the state guidelines are all right so uh and again right this is an action item right uh but i would you know simply request that we make sure that with

respect to wonder valley and with pali that they are following regardless of what county they're in right that we are following the lake county guidelines as set forth by um you know dr choi um as that is what we have said we would do um so i would request that that be done that would be my request but again this isn't an action item it's only direction and informational i'm sorry it's not even directional it's just information yeah anyone else with questions go ahead i was just wondering what are the healthcare facilities and access that it will be available to students should any need arise and this would be even not just covid related but just in general both both sites have a registered nurse on site and they have a full-blown almost like little

mini hospital section in there almost like a little small urgent care er center that's right there because you're in outdoor activities be it a zip line be it horseback all those fun things that kids get to do kids still get hurt kids still need a band-aid still kids still get a cut still kids still might need some tylenol for a bump or a bruise to take down the pain or the swelling or what have you whatever a neosporin whatever and what also they also hold the medications because we have several of our students that take medication so they go they report to the medical center to get their medications that are all held right there so there is a registered nurse at both sites i've seen it firsthand because i've watched kids get hurt beans

and i've watched them be applied and i've watched the nurse do what they need to do and there's a healthy team that is there to assist the nurse as well and one more question you brought up um in your report which i appreciated looking at um at options the possibility of changing dates what would be your preference as the administrator as some as the person who's been interacting with the parents with the students you know having experience of that i think you went to wonder valley i went to all three yeah yeah so in your in your experience and in your perspective and based on what you've been getting feedback on since you presented those options if you could speak to what your thoughts are well my thoughts are we have a and just my

thoughts are based on a couple things number one the families that have outreach to me concerning these outdoor educational trips um regarding whether they are their child is vaccinated on vaccine whether their child's a sixth grade or whether there's an eighth grader and i've explained them some of the information that's already presented that i presented here this evening um that i think that our kids are safe and i think this are great opportunities for our kids i would be concerned if we did not check vaccines and cards i would be concerned if we did not have our kids tested before they get on a bus and they go up on a trip i want to make sure that the kids that are up there are have a negative test result i want to make sure

that the kids are up there have a a vaccination especially for upper grade those students that are above 12 and older i also want to make sure that the camp is safe and the camp is is how is the camp handling we have asked tons of questions ms how's it at myself with the camp and they have reassured us not only by answering our questions not just in glittering generalities but being very specific like are we the only ones there what about the dining situation because i can speak to it because i can see it i know what it looks like feels like tastes like and so when i know those things those things are very specific to me am i confident that this that no one's going to get cold while no you know

obviously today our dashboard changes in huntington middle school i take that very personally but those again are all of our responsibilities to making sure our kids are safe so that's why i looked at these alternative dates just to make sure that if that's a decision that we need to pivot and move and adjust like we do that we're ready to do that but we need to do it quickly if we decide to do so but your preference would be to continue as planned with these safety protocols in place absolutely and then what about you had mentioned pally do we stick with pallies staying at strongly recommending or are you thinking well pally is a tough one because if you go in that in that winter time i mean everyone not the date change the um

because it's strongly recommending versus requiring well i would definitely have our students tested before they get on a bus and go up i think that's something that's extremely important that's their recommendation but we have the power to to to make that happen that's because that's those are kids those are our those students are our responsibility and as as board member clackey shared well those are san bernardino unified school district kids and i take full responsibility for those kids going on a bus and getting up there so your recommendation for pally then would be to be consistent with absolutely be consistent with what we're doing with winter valley it's across the board just like we want to be consistent on things that we're doing like mr curtin mock and i being consistent things that we do

at the secondary level it's extremely important that we're consistent we're a small district and we need to be consistent in those ways thank you can i can i just ask if a child test positive well that's positive or has symptoms and they're up in clovis six hours away what happens the parent needs to come and get them what about there's just simply similar to like what we have here is we have the isolation room or the symptom lounge so to speak they have those same protocols held there at their campsites it goes back to board member channel what you were asking about about the the medical facilities the same thing applies to there um then they would be held in that isolations lounge or just quarantined until the parent was to be able to arrive

of course obviously getting treatment uh by their stuff they're gonna get this information before absolutely so again go they will know right so they're going to make informed educated decision based decisions based on all the facts right is there a potential that rather than sleeping in cabins that if they're at wonder valley that each student could bring their own tent and sleep in their own tent and then they're isolated from every other student for eight hours i'd have to ask that if that's something that would be on their facility within their insurance and liability because that's the joys of catalina um i mean if we're in catalina we can put everybody outside in a tent it's great it would work but we're not in catalina and but i would definitely would have to ask um

about bringing a tent i mean i'm definitely mindful to your comment about the elements we don't we don't want kids getting getting cold right or any other right and we are on the uh we are on the elements in fresno and fresno is unpredictable so um but again i'm just here to give you this information appreciate it i trust that you guys will digest it talk about it and then well i think it's right up to the administrators right and you as a principal to make that decision we told you our thoughts right you've provided us the information but right thank you daryl sorry i had a couple of questions okay sorry so um mr clackey brought up the the sleeping uh conditions um do we have the ability you know in the classrooms we

have the ability to put up the plexiglas do we have the ability to bring some sort of protective out there and then what are the air conditioning room circulation type things can we check on those two i get what mr clack is saying i'm just asking because i know in our um covet area for isolation that we at my site we purchased um like portable dividers where you you know kind of slide it out and they they break the um you know the the the setup of the sleeping arrangements so that's like another protective barrier and then also the air conditioning or the the units because i'm not sure about um outdoor facilities and sleeping arrangements whether they even have the air circulation and all of the protocols that are now in place with the

air circulation if you could just check on that bad b absolutely i'll check on that i'm not too sure about the protective shields i do know the larger rooms will be utilized at wonder valley and at pally but by excuse me pali all the activities are outdoors and at wonder valleys the larger rooms will be used for the students opposed to some of the smaller rooms and they have an amphitheater that they use as well at wonder valley for our students but i will definitely find out about those those things okay maybe even if it's possible if they don't have anything if we can bring our own i don't know if that's possible the children will be masked inside will they john it says for indirect no no no no yes yes for indoor activities

yes they'll be massive but for the plexiglass they if it's an option something behind them sorry i was thinking or the protective shirts like the air purifier yes i wrote that down to ask about the airplane similar to what we have on our classroom that's provided by our with our code funding uh i will ask about that as well okay yes for sure we can bring our own in fact are the are the filters that we have in the classroom are those portable we have air purifiers in every classroom but in addition to that we have an hr system that with um brand new uh upgraded air filters correct gil yeah yes and they're in classrooms and most of the if we have 170 kids going we're going to have a lot of empty classrooms

but air purifiers are not being used we could throw them in a bus it wouldn't cost a dime potentially if they allow it if they allow or they might have them already yes let's just hope for the best that's why please check those are great questions and ones i'll be more than happy to um to ask for um this house and i will make sure that we address those thank you and if i feel at any point in time that the answers and just where we're moving in this direction as things change then i will definitely make the appropriate decision in the best interest of not only our students but our school community thank you so much thank you and um board members i want you to be mindful of the time do we need

to have um extension because we still have a number of items 11e got moved in with the san marino high school chamber choir retreat so that's going to be addressed next i'm just telling you we're adding it up and i'm looking at how many minutes we might need before returning to closed session so um president ryan may i ask and my concern is as we did with our last meet we cannot continue this right i mean we've already continued it for two weeks because of the length of the meeting last springboard meeting and now you know we're asking for an increase again so this has got to be done right yes for run so we may possible we are always like this if we we don't have a reasonable parent so um what do you

believe is the time taken i think that these items um are routine items and we can get through them very quickly there's not a lot involved other than the board taking action on each of these items i'm not sure about the item that mrs chan wanted to discuss related to the choir field trip um well i think if we want to conduct a good meeting we really need to have a the meeting protocol i think the poor president you need to to have a very firm you know the procedure to to to conduct because there's another personal contact attack if they continue to attack me then i think i will have a feedback so i guess just just just like this one you know it did not reveal and then allow them to circulate you

look at page 17. this is a terrible in in all this toxic and then you to distribute to everyone it doesn't doesn't make sense you the cancer compared with the kobe 19 in inflation rate this is terrible so if we move to extend the meeting to 10 30 no the the deadline is 10 30 we would extend it to longer than two i don't think you would need it that's why i i think we're all i think we're okay i think we see um president ryan at like 10 20 if we need to okay extended and at that time since we're only allowed one extension uh and 10 30 pursuant to our someone stopping at 10 20 to see if we have joy yes thank you okay all right all right great so next up

would be um the san marino high school chamber choir retreat which was um pulled from the consent section for further review similar to the ones we just heard yes well i pulled it because i did not well there was one there were two things one there were a couple of errors so i was wondering those have been rectified thank you dr de la torre um and then my second question had to do with i just didn't see anything related to coveted protocols in the packet okay because it looks like it's sort of a standard um packet that we normally do it is it is um so we have we're following all the ladhp protocols because they are in la um and they have already been checked by the ladhp they got a hundred percent on

all the protocols that they have to have in place um to answer your question two to three students per cabin um so not very many students at all 21 students total three chaperones mr jameson miss washburn who's our accompanist and one parent probably the parent who went up but i'm not going to speak for them yet because they went up to verify the camp they looked it over as well because they wanted to make sure that they could kind of give a sort of stamp of approval it's not anybody official but it is a very long-term parent in terms of our district has had several kids and one of their kids is going on the trip so they have a vested interest in making sure that it is appropriate can i just ask real quick

on that one issue is that person live scanned uh no they didn't go up with any kids they just went up oh as a volunteer they volunteer our chaperones have to go through chaperone training and they have to be certified as a district approved volunteer we have made the decision years ago not to fingerprint our parent volunteers so if it is a parent volunteer we're not asking that they be live-scanned if it's a non-parent volunteer they must be so this this would be apparent but this is going to be somebody that is not live scanned and will be in the presence of underage minors while they're asleep this is parent yeah okay so uh in the past the board has allowed parent volunteers to chaperone i'm not i'm not sure about the sleeping arrangement part

of that no they aren't in all the camps that i've done they've never slept in the camps with the students taking kids to chicago parents have their own room students have their that's my understanding i don't think there's not same with wonder valley yeah that's what will happen yeah they're not the parents aren't sleeping with the kids in the same space yeah okay i mean i've never been on it so i'm just making sure because in wonder valley for example we have adults that are with that pod of students and they're sleeping in the same room with those kids so i'm just wondering if that's what's happening here but it sounds like it's not no no no this is nice it's hard clarity but it's not our people they're they're camp employees at wonder valley

and italians they're hired staff right nobody from right honey to middle school i'll be sleeping i under i understand that and that and that actually maybe is another question is do we know if those people are live-scanned i i do not do the principles and i know that's not mr curtin box they they were when i was there they went through all their things i mean they're first of all they're normally um finishing they're all in college usually they're all live scanned they're all tb they they covered the high assuming the protocol is the same but it's been now four years so i might be even more stringent at this point um so i'm just assuming to follow up uh with uh mrs chan's statement that are you going to require everybody to be vaccinated

or provide proof of a negative covet test um i am not because i mean maybe would that i could but that's not my decision as far as the camp is is concerned they provide they require the same thing that okay um i just want to make sure either proof of that or a negative test within i think theirs is for ladhp i think is 48 hours and then in keeping with uh what um mr kalaki said so if uh a student tests positive my assumption as with wonder valley is a parent has to come up and take the so i'm assuming right that that will all be get sent out as part of the packet as part of the the right up to the packet yeah right all of that will be it's it would

it would work it would work the same as if you know broken finger they got the flu whatever um but there have been instances where right i've been allowed to drive a kid home and we've had our district nurse um miss javier drive again too uh but they'll just get notification just one day yeah of course okay can i just ask i'm i'm reading the application and this is going the trip is going to take place september 23rd to the 25th yep and the application was submitted august but the application requires that it be submitted three months before departure but none of that was possible three months ago and that was something that mr jameson came to me with was do you think we can get this through and he said we didn't even think

we could have camps three months ago we didn't know we were gonna have school for sure three months ago they didn't think this was a possibility i said well the only thing we can do is do it as quickly as we can submit it and if it doesn't fit with the timeline and we can't go does our insurance require this is this no this is just no this is our own internal protocols yeah i do i mean in reading it it looked as though uh unless i didn't read it correctly but it looked as though that three-month requirement might be waivable by the assistant superintendent of instructional services so maybe that can resolve that issue my my main concern with the one month is does it throw us outside of insurance coverage but if it's

not then no no if i recall that three-month thing was something that i requested yes this year you're going to run into this a lot because typically we have all this stuff done we're still querying our seniors about yosemite we don't want to sign a contract with them if you know not too many kids are interested so that's probably going to be behind the the timeline as well but as soon as we are able to do it we're going to push it through and get it too quickly this is a waiver year this year jason thank you so um i apologize if this question was already answered um i stepped away for a moment so um in terms of us addressing the cleaning protocol so when we're looking at how the kids are sleeping the

air circulation and the cleaning what is the schedule for the cleaning because you know you have 150 kids using four bathrooms you have i know they're not supposed to mix the pods but you still have people using the same sinks and bathrooms and and um you know touching all of the same furnitures going in and out of uh eating areas whether it's outdoor under what's the cleaning um schedule there or do we know or can you come back to us with that and then is there testing upon return to our school community i know all of our kids are up there but they're up there for different times so your sixth graders are gone or your seventh graders and they come back in eighth grade and then your high school kids are gone and then

coming back and re integrating into our school community is there is there a way also to do the um negative or the to require a testing what are your thoughts jason i don't know their cleaning schedule my assumption is because it's la they have to follow the same protocol so it's at least daily and i'm sure that their bathrooms in those areas probably get it more frequently just like ours do with our custodians but we can check on that in terms of testing thanks to dr choi we have to test all of our athletes 48 hours before they compete which means we now have to set up testing on mondays and wednesday mornings and potentially a couple of tuesdays we're having to figure all of that out so whenever our students return from anything odds

ours we're going to have testing people on site for that group this group is very small it's 21 students we can offer that obviously we can't mandate that they be tested because that's not part of our protocol right now but we can offer that on the monday of their return because we will have omnipathology on our campus testing our athletes to get them prepared for tuesday and wednesday athletic events so that wouldn't be a problem at all my assumption and i don't know this to be true the vast majority are vaccinated and i say that because we went through the whole situation with the football team last week and i think it was all but one so i i do believe that that is kind of the the majority but of course i'm only using

a small sample size as that but it's pretty solid and our parents are extremely interested in it so i think that they're willing to accept that risk they are hearing from a parent who visited the camp which i think is very beneficial because they're seeing it through a parent's eyes um instead of mine and mr jameson's and um you know i know more about their cleaning so my question is for the 21 students you are not sure they get the vaccination or not right right because i'm i'm not allowed to ask unless there is a need say if they are going on the trip and we find out one test positive then i could probably and you are allowed to do the testing right i'm not allowed to force them to test no i can

ask if they've been vaccinated as i did with the football team but i thought before start so the steven choi will ask the get a testing right um it's available i just can't make them text no but uh jason i thought you said that the camp the camp requires proof of vaccination or a negative test 48 hours prior to coming so if they're leaving on the 23rd they have to test on the 21st if they're not vaccinated and show proof of that or they show the vaccination um they're masked the entire time except when sleeping as we've we've established there's only two to three to a room um their activities are largely coral which means they do have to keep their mass on even when they're participating i'm assuming because we're at a camp the

majority of it's going to be outdoors it's still nice out um it's not too cold it's not too hot and that is really what we've been doing we've been teaching our choir classes when i go there mr jamison will work with one group inside all mass the other group outside all mass will be practicing on their own so they can get their sounds together and they're rotating so he's keeping stable groups together in that way too there's always a risk though there always will be thank you all right um thank you mr karate thank you mr topali thank you miss haslet for staying i would move to approve the smhs choir chamber choir trip i second uh thank you mrs chong and mrs jack roll call uh mr kalacki because of my concern of students

sleeping overnight without masks i don't know thank you mr um mr chang sorry i concerned if they don't get a vaccination so i i i suggest a chance away for the the pandemic yeah so i i don't know okay mrs chung hi mrs jack aye mrs ryan i student board member hi thank you the motion passes um can i just make one note though so that we don't continue to encounter this in the future if we can ask that any trips in the future include covered protocols as part of the packet for this school year and that's something that i assume would need to be coordinated with each of the sites as well so thank you yes absolutely next communication from the audience regarding matters on the action agenda are to be made at this

time dr choi thank you we are pausing for one minute to take requests to speak regarding action items on the agenda if you would like to make a request to speak please press the raise hand icon dial star 9 or submit a public comment card [Laughter] we have 30 seconds remaining if you'd like to make a request to speak regarding action items on the agenda please press the raise hand icon star 9 or submit a public comment card we have no requests thank you mr choi and so we move on to the action item this is 13 a resolution number one authorization for temporary inner fund cash flowing for the 2021-22 fiscal year it's an action item dr linda deletori please thank you president ryan members of the board of education executive team student board

member um this evening i am presenting to you resolution number one authorization for temporary inter-fund cash borrowing for the 2021-22 fiscal year this resolution allows the school district to have the flexibility to borrow from itself in an amount of uh up to 1.8 million dollars any monies that we do borrow from ourselves would need to be repaid either in the same fiscal year or in the following fiscal year if borrowing takes place within the final 120 calendar days of a fiscal year and this is being done for adequate cash flow purposes if there's no further discussion there's a correction to be made because we had continued it from the previous one it should read august 24th not the 10th and that stands for all three of the resolutions that we had to postpone yes and

if you um if you look at the board memo on the board memo there's a note and it says this item was moved from the 810 agenda so that that is noted um so we're we're okay with that i think because it's in the in the memo we can leave it as 810 as long as this is attached to it which clearly says um with an asterisk this item was moved from the 810 agenda and at the very top of the memo it says date august 24 2021. okay so that's how we're handling it yes thank you thank you for any further discussion i moved to approve resolution number one authorization for temporary interference cash borrowing high second thank you mrs chung thank you miss sis jack i'd like to do roll call mrs jack

hi mrs chong aye mr chang hi mr kalaki hi mrs ryan i student board member thank you the motion passes let's move on to 13b resolution number two temporary cash flowing from the la county treasure for the 2021-22 fiscal year this is an action item it is recommended that the board of education adopt resident resolution number two which is the authorization to borrow from the la county treasurer for the 2021 to 22 fiscal year for cash flow purposes dr linda delatorre thank you president ryan members of the board of education the executive team and student board member we are providing the board of education with resolution number two this is another tool that we use in public education to be able to temporarily borrow funds from the county we did have the board of education

approve a tran earlier in the year that we decided not to use so in lieu of the tran vehicle for borrowing cash we are going to be going to los angeles county in order to manage our cash flow issues any discussion may i have a motion this is an action item i move to approve resolution number two temporary cash borrowing from the l.a county treasurer for 21 22 fiscal year thank you mrs chong thank you mr kalaki roll call vote mr clackey hi mrs jack hi mrs chong hi mr chang hi mrs ryan i student board member who has just been wonderful i am yes it is past 10 and she is still here thank you and so the motion passes for resolution number two next 13 13 c um resolution number three this is

the delegation of administrative authority to process routine budget revisions adjustments and transfers for 2021-2022 this is an action item it's recommended that the board of education adopt this resolution number three in its annual delegation of administrative authority to process routine budget revisions adjustments and transfers during this fiscal year as presented dr linda delatorre thank you staff is seeking the approval of the board of education on the delegation of administrative authority to process routine budget revisions adjustments and transfers again this is a routine item that we bring before the board annually and we are seeking your approval i have a clerical question sure on the signature page it reads the secretary governing board but that would technically be the superintendent that read clerk um are we is it are we required to have the uh secretary

of the board which is the superintendent signed banji for the county you know oh this is the county's template um and the superintendent's usually the secretary to the board um and then perhaps you would sign as member so then you would sign twice as secretary and a superintendent apparently okay yeah i don't know why i'll ask them next time though so we can you know sort through that but um this is the the template that they give us it's not something that we're creating so i'm not sure but i'll i'll find out why fine with me thank you it is sort of strange thank you for okay can we verify i mean the subject to a very verification so so just ask them what's the meaning yeah yes i will i certainly will of course

um i move to approve resolution number three delegation of administrative authority to process routine budget revisions adjustments and transfers for this year thank you mrs chong i mean i have a second motion high second thank you mrs jack roll call mr kalaki hi mrs jack hi mrs chung hi mr chang aye mrs ryan i student board member mrs win you the motion passes we now have oh sorry to interrupt um we we had spoken briefly on the pronoun issue yes the one that's being approved is different than than this one correct um because this is the one that's that's that was in the board packet just refers to his i know that one was sent separate yes later that's fine i just make sure because that's what we're approving yes thank you thank you thank

you for that mr clackey um okay now i've i've blanked out what i'm doing okay thank you 13d resolution number four to establish short-term employment pursuant to education code 45103 this is an action item dr linda deletori it is recommended that the board of education approve resolution number four to support to establish covet 19 support staff as long-term employees pursuant to the california education code section 45-103 yes california education code section 45103 allows the school district to establish a classification of employee that is short-term as opposed to hiring individuals that would be classified as probationary this will allow us to temporarily hire individuals to help with cobit 19 compliance screening contact tracing and assisting food service with cafeteria lines etc and so these employees are are going to be working for us um up to

one year and then we will reassess the need to continue their employment and i would also like to inform the board that we are using one-time monies that are strictly for this purpose and they are designated as coveted funds to support these positions are they subject to any layoff notices march 15th notices we would still be laying them off not march 15 notices because they're not certificated positions they're classified positions so we would still be providing them with a notice that we are not going to continue them in the capacity that they are designated in currently um so we will follow those rules for these particular employees okay thank you you're welcome all right go ahead you have the question uh well it's not so much of a question as for future board meetings when

we talk about the budget can we be sure to clearly lay out where our co-ed funds are coming from and then how we spent them which this would fall under yes and we're working on that app actually right now um we have a consultant that you're aware of her name is pearl izuka and she's going to be working with banji um to put together a budget presentation that will include um how the one-time monies are being spent and the various um designated resources et cetera and we will also um be planning a board study session soon to fully inform the board on uh where we are at with our budget and our ending balance et cetera so that is in the works um in keeping with that um uh you know the the the one-time

monies right and as you pointed out right covered monies are in different plots yes they have to be used for certain things correct so when we get that budget when we get those expenses can we make sure that you know it says here you know i don't know kobe pop money one right asterick only used for this right because i don't want to see the big thing right i want to see and what it can be used for and so yes we can tag and follow absolutely yes we'll try and make it as as reader friendly as possible um so that anybody in the community can look at something like that and know exactly what we're doing yeah we're good big font too yes yes thank you [Laughter] reader friendly did you hear that vangee
