Um roll call for trustee Gonzalez. Present.
011Trustee Magaña. Not here. Trustee or Present. >> she is. Trustee Torres, not present. Okay, trustee Frutos is not here yet. He is on his way. Trustee Consuelo. Here. Trustee Arroyo. Here. Trustee Ramos. Here. Trustee Sandoval, here. All right, if we could stand for the pledge of allegiance, please. And shame on me, I forgot to report out of closed session. We have one item. Uh we have approved um the Lori Sanchez as the principal of McKevett School. So, officially, we'll get rid of that interim. Did I ask if you had any comments or not? No, just kidding. Come on in. Make your speech. Make your speech. Good evening, uh Superintendent Weinstein and board members. I am truly honored and grateful for the trust you placed in me to serve as principal at McKevett Elementary. This year
012has meant a great deal to me both professionally and um personally. Stepping into this role as interim principal came during a very difficult time for our school community. Um Ms. Pacheco left a lasting impact on McKevett, and I recognize that I'm stepping into a role shaped by her leadership, care, and commitment to the students and family families. There are big shoes to fill, and I carry that responsibility with humility and deep respect. I want to thank our district leadership for their guidance and support throughout this year. I'm also incredibly grateful to the McKevett staff. Uh their dedication, resilience, and heart for students have been evident every single day. It really has been a privilege to work alongside them. Um a team that's just so committed to doing what's best for our students. Um to our
013families and community, I want to thank them for their trust and partnership. This year, we have expanded our family engagement at McKevett Elementary. Um such as providing family art nights with through partnership with the Santa Paula Art Museum. Um we've also opened the um school up for more um opportunities for us guests to come onto campus. Just for example, like our Read Across America, we had a board member, Dr. Sandoval, um come and read, and our we had um the Santa Paula Police Department and local community members come and read. So, that has been exciting um being able to do that. So, um their involvement continues to make McKevett a special place, and of course, our students continue to inspire us. Their creativity in the arts, to their growth in the classroom, has reminded us
014and has reminded me why this work matters. As I step into this role, my commitment to building to continue building on the strong foundation that already exists at McKevett, supporting our students academically, nurturing their creativity through the arts, and ensuring every child feels safe, valued, and connected. Um thank you again for this opportunity. I am very I'm so proud to serve the McKevett community. It truly is a privilege to lead this school filled with so much heart. And I want to say growing up in Santa Paula, um and my babysitter used to be right across the street from McKevett School. So, I remember just looking across the school thinking, "Well, maybe one of these days I'll get to work there." My mom worked there as a teacher, so it's just it's an honor really to
015be there. So, thank you. All right, moving on. Uh approval of the agenda. Do I have a motion to approve the agenda? Are there any changes? No. The agenda? No, there are not any changes. I'm sorry. There was one. Yeah. Are we Melissa? Are we Are we pulling the What do you want to move forward with? 6B. Okay. Yeah. Okay. That's what I thought. All right, 6B. So, we're going to be pulling 6B. So, do I have a motion to approve the agenda minus 6B? So moved. A second would be nice. I second. Thank you. All right, any discussion? We'll move to a vote. All those in favor, say aye. Aye. Aye. Aye. Oh, forgot the preferential vote. Sorry. All those in favor, say aye. Aye. All right, thanks. All right, I'll get back on
016track somehow. Um student board member reports. Go ahead. Uh good evening, everybody. Tonight, we'll be beginning with Isbell Academy of College and Careers. As usual, we will begin with their young writers contest. So, a couple months ago, the submission deadlines were due for the young writers contest, and Isbell had a plethora of winners. Uh the ceremony was at Isbell on Tuesday, March 24th. Uh students from across the district in first grade through 12th grade were celebrated for their narrative and poetry writing skills. Um there were 10 winners from Mr. Lopez's avid class, and two winners from Judith Tillman's classes as well. Moving on to wrestling, Isbell girls and boys wrestling team competed in the Ventura County Middle School Wrestling League Championships at Royal High School, April 17th. Isbell had six first place champions, seven second
017place winners, seven third-place winners, and five fourth-place winners. Moving on to boys girl to girls and boys soccer, their seasons are underway and going strong. The boys soccer team is undefeated and the girls team has won one game. Sorry. Uh boys volleyball earned their first win and their season continues for another month. Uh the Isbell track team participated in their first track meet on Saturday, April 18th at SPHS. Isbell won many of their events and posted fast times for future medaling events. And finally, we have CASP testing. So, CASP testing, the state standardized test that go out to uh all grade levels in elementary school, uh grade levels in middle school, and then juniors in high school. Well, Isbell will begin testing this week with English English language arts, followed by mathematics, then science testing
018for eighth graders. Moving on to Blanchard, Blanchard held their prep rally for the May the 4th be with you and Jedi in training and the Padawans classroom buddies demonstrated their secret handshakes and positive charts for the upcoming CASP testing. These are initiatives that Blanchard is moving forward to help encourage students and incentivize students with their testing. Uh the best in show awards will be held tomorrow, Thursday, April 23rd for celebrating students with academic and character awards for the third quarter. Kona snow cones continue as as an attendance incentive for students with above 95% attendance rates. And lastly, promoting summer camp and Aspire registration for all families to promote continued learning and student access will be coming up. Moving on to uh Glen City, they have officially broken ground and began construction on their new outdoor
019green playground, made possible through the green schoolyard project. Uh the board was able to attend that. Uh that was also the same day that happened in Lathrop. That was very much fun. They're getting ready for their annual annual talent show this Friday from 6:00 to 7:30. Three of their participants look forward to participating in the SPHS variety show on Friday, May 15th. Mr. Guzman extends his invitations to the board and to the community for Friday's talent show. And finally, the C Ag and Food Share Partnership connected with their third-grade students to promote healthy food choices, focusing on fruits and vegetables through a fun, yet engaging presentation. Students have the opportunity to create and enjoy their own fruit yogurt, making the experience both hands-on and memorable. That is all we have to report for this week.
020All right. Good evening, everyone. Starting off with Bedell, Bedell is having their CASP testing this week. Good luck to all those testing. Bedell also hosted a movie night this past Friday, where students, staff, and the public were invited to watch the new live-action Lilo & Stitch movie, as well as tour the new PAWS Wellness Center. Last week, Bedell also hosted an attendance challenge with Miss Murillo's kindergarten class winning first place. Congratulations. Bedell is also hosting a garden work day this Thursday, April 23rd from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. at the Bedell garden, where parents, guardians, and other volunteers are invited to help beautify the school garden. Moving on to Barbara Webster, the Barbara Webster students and staff are preparing for the start of the CASP testing exams. They have worked hard and studied and are ready
021to start testing. Good luck. Their sports academy is deep into their soccer and track and field seasons. Their track and field team did very well in their first meet this past Saturday, and the soccer teams are preparing for their first game this Saturday. Additionally, this Thursday, April 23rd at 8:30 a.m., Webster will have their ability awareness activity in their cafeteria. At this event, some of their older general education students will work with their SDC extensive needs students to learn what it means to be disabled. This is a powerful event, which will help build empathy and understanding. And that is all I have. All right, we'll move to committee updates. Uh Trustee Kumazawa. Uh no updates. Trustee Arroyo. No updates. Trustee Ramos. Yeah, I attended this week's LCAP meeting. It was a very fun event, um
022getting to know some of Well, I had a I had a diverse table. I had a classified employee, I had a uh principal, and I believe I also had another classified employee. So, we were going through the LCAP budget, of course, giving our feedback on what was spent, what was not spent. Um So, it was pretty nice. I think we're going to need one extra day, right, Dr. Ramirez, to go over it fully and then give the recommendation to the board of how we feel about LCAP. But again, another shameless plug. Community out there, you know, if you want to talk about the school's budget, if you really want to get to the meat and potatoes of the issues, please come by and see us in LCAP. All right. And uh I attended the strategic
023planning committee meeting today. Uh actually, kind of segues from you. We talked a little bit about LCAP, um and how it might relate to the strategic plan and how we needed to actually do a little bit more uh meshing on that. Um and we also talked had a spirited debate on dual enrollment. Uh and um you know, uh talking about what that that looks like. We have immediate needs right now um that we're working through. And so, yeah, hopefully we'll have more to come on both of those uh later on. All right. So, moving on to public comments. Do we have public comments today? I think we do. All right. First up, Dr. Ramon Flores. Sorry, Principal I'm a little taller. Uh good evening, President Sandoval, board members, Superintendent Weinstein, and members of the community.
024I'm Dr. Ramon Flores. I am the STEM Director at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Point Mugu Division. I'm here today to express my sincere appreciation for the board's leadership and vision in approving the educational partnership agreement with my lab. This collaboration is already opening doors for students across Santa Paula Unified School District, especially in the crucial fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Opportunities like these are just not nice to haves, they are essential. They connect classroom learning to real-world applications, inspire curiosity, and give students a tangible sense of what their futures can look like. Through this partnership, students are gaining exposure to cutting-edge technologies, mentorship from professionals, and pathways into careers that many may not have even previously imagined possible. One of the most impactful programs connected to this effort is the SMART Scholarship,
025which is science, mathematics, and research for transportation. I'm sorry, transformation. This is a highly competitive scholarship that provides students with full tuition, annual stipends up to $40,000 a year, and a direct pathway into STEM careers uh supporting our nation's innovation and security. It's truly a life-changing opportunity. Tonight, I'm especially proud to highlight that one of your own, Luis Angel Avila, is the latest recipient of the SMART Scholarship. Luis represents the very best of Santa Paula, hard-working, driven, and full of potential. His achievement is not only a personal milestone, but also a reflection of the district's commitment to preparing students for high-demand, high-impact careers. Luis's success shows what's possible when opportunity meets preparation. And thanks to this partnership with the Navy, more students will have a chance to follow in his footsteps. So again, thank you
026to the board for your forward-thinking leadership and for investing in programs that empower students and strengthen the community's future. The impact of this decision will be felt for many years to come. Thank you very much. All right. Thank you. All right. And uh Luis Avila. Welcome back. Thank you. How are you all doing today? Um it's a pleasure to be here. I'm very grateful. Thank you all for having us. And as Dr. Flores said, I want to say I express my gratitude for you guys supporting these programs. Um I'd like to say that growing up, I didn't have a lot of support. Uh I had support, but I didn't have a lot of guidance. So, I would just roam around, and then these programs they really changed my life, I'll say. Um I was just
027kind of wandering around, trying to figure out where I'd go. And then Dr. Flores comes in and introduces me to this amazing program. I started out at the very beginning of the pipeline with the pre-engineering engineering program at Santa Paula High School. I traversed that. I was very grateful for that program. It inspired me to become a mechanical engineer. Um so much so, I saw so much value in that from all the hands-on experience, all the connections with the professional engineers, uh ocean engineers, engineers from all kinds of fields, that I decided I wanted to come back and give more. So, with the help of Dr. Flores, I was able to become the first uh pre-engineering mentor for the program, which uh doing so inspired other students to do the same, uh returning. Um I
028joined other programs such as the uh a couple initiatives, such as the Pathway to Work Fridays, which is all about outreach. You know, I'm big on outreach, of course, because without that outreach, I wouldn't be where I am today. And I'm really grateful to be a part of that pipeline, you know, uh having this opportunity to have that scholarship. Um the SMART Scholarship uh is amazing, because now I have all this weight off me, you know. I never wanted my family to spend a dime on my on me. Uh I They already sacrificed enough, so I wanted to start giving back to them and uh, make my future so that I could support them, uh, as time goes on. But, overall, I want to say really like I really appreciate this for you guys supporting
029these programs because now I could follow in Dr. Flores' footsteps and start supporting students how he supported me, you know, I want to keep that pipeline going and make it better. So, appreciate your time. All right, thank you. And hey, he's he's going to have to retire at some point. Maybe, uh, All right. All right, we'll move on to 6A first reading board policy 5141.5 mental health. Who is, uh, presenting that one? >> Dr. Santamaria, would you like to do that? This is regards to first reading board policy, uh, 5141.5 on mental health. Um, so these are updates, uh, from CSBA that we receive on a regular basis. Uh, the ones particular to mental health that I have reviewed with my team, um, through my department. Um, the changes or added language in the update,
030um, for this board policy include, um, training requirements or requirements for youth mental health first aid training. Um, requirements for LGBTQI+ training for grade 7 through 12. It's also spells out, um, language for referral protocols, uh, for mental health counseling. And, um, it adds language about telehealth, um, but we don't typically, um, rely on telehealth as as a strategy. Um, the majority of our services are provided face-to-face. All right, do we have any, uh, questions or comments for Dr. Santamaria? I know you said most of your services are face-to-face, but do we have an exception for students within independent study, um, that are just normally not on campus? Um, actually, um, good timing on that question because I was really happy to see actually one of our independent studies students. We made accommodations for them
031to come to our um, Santa Barbara Street building uh, to receive, um, services at our building. Um, so we do have space within the Santa Barbara Street building to make those types of accommodations, um, to ensure students do receive services for all programs that we offer including, um, independent studies. I do know that, um, counseling services from Angela Bautista, um, from Renaissance High School, since Renaissance High School oversees independent studies program, um, does also provide, um, counseling services for students on independent studies as well. I'm not too sure of the the exact format she uses for that, um, but that's something I could follow up on. And then in the language in the item, it states 40% classified employees who have direct contact with students in grades 7 through 12 receive youth behavioral health or
032behavior training at least one time. How'd you come up with that, um, percentage? Did you, uh, did you just pull staff and or did you look at positions or where where did this or where did this idea come from? That came from the CSBA update. Um, yeah. Is it possible for us to shoot for more, um, or would that just be a minimum, like a baseline, at least 40% would receive this training? For classified? Yes. I mean, I I do believe that's, um, that's a pretty good Yes, it could be higher. Um, it does ensure that all certificated employees receive youth mental health first training first aid training. Um, so that in of itself is going to be, um, um, an effort to accomplish, um, in addition adding 40% of classified. Um, I believe I
033mean, just I haven't really given it much thought, but it it seems like an appropriate level. Again, like you say, it could be higher. Yeah, and it's just it's just a possibility, right? You know, if if 40%, you know, I don't understand your perspective cuz you're the administrator and you have to like set you have to come up and schedule the training, so I mean, if it's possible, great, but if that's the minimum, well, I mean, that's also a good number, too. Right. Um, and that's what Ed Code spells out, and so, um, following those percentages, we are aligning with Ed Code. Um, so yeah, I mean, we'll see maybe down the road, um, that percentage increases and that requirement increases or we or we determine that there is a need to increase those percentages,
034um, but I I think I feel like this is a good start. Okay. All right, any other questions or comments? All right, thank you very much, Dr. Santamaria. Um, moving on to 6C first reading board policy and admin regulation 6172.1 concurrent enrollment in college classes. Director Dira. Good evening. We're bringing to you tonight policy 6172.1 concurrent enrollment in college classes. And, uh, this is to provide some direction for our dual enrollment practices in Santa Paula Unified. So, the uh, this is a first reading uh, draft of the board policy as recommended by CSBA. Many of our, uh, neighboring local districts have already adopted this policy. And it essentially allows students to take classes at a local community college while also being enrolled in a Santa Paula Unified school and have the opportunity if approved ahead
035of time to count those, uh, courses for, uh, high school credit. This board policy also covers something called college and career access pathways, also known as CCAP, and these are our dual enrollment courses that are offered during the school day. Do we have any comments or questions for Director Dira? All right. Thank you. And moving on to, um, 6D Santa Paula Educational Foundation Cardinals Led Legends Annual Awards Night. Director Donahue. Good evening. I'm here, uh, today speaking, uh, on behalf of Santa Paula Education Foundation. And I'm the as Santa Paula Education Foundation invites our community to attend the Cardinal Legends Dinner on June 13th at 5:00, uh, where we will honor this year's 2026 Cardinal Legends Dr. Michael Tushla, Joe and Wennett Jauregui, and Henry Jacinto. The Cardinal Legends program recognizes individuals whose extraordinary service
036and commitment have made a lasting impact on the students of Santa Paula High School. Um, this year we're honoring, uh, Dr. Michael Tushla who supported who supported students student athletes for over 30 years by providing sideline medical care and by providing free physicals for students and ensuring access to athletics for all students. Uh, Joe and Wennett Jauregui have dedicated decades of services to our schools and community. Joe served, uh, 22 years as a principal of Renaissance High School and has, uh, the long time voice of the Cardinals. Um, while Wennett served 18 years, uh, on the Santa Paula Elementary School Board. Together they have supported students through leadership and volunteering. And Henry Jacinto, known as Coach Hass to many, uh, served more than 30 years as a coach, athletic director, and teacher shaping generations of
037students through his leadership and commitment. And these honorees, uh, truly represent the spirit of Santa Paula and the impact of service to our students. Um, more information including, uh, tickets uh, including tickets is available via the QR code in the flyer, um, and the link located in the flyer as well. All right, thank you very much unless there's any questions, but can't wait to go to that event. I feel like you need a a larger space for the event cuz the first last year, I mean, I think we barely fit and I think more and more people know about it and know how wonderful it was, so. That's great feedback. That was our first year our first annual event, so, um, I will definitely take that feedback back to, uh, Santa Paula Education Foundation meeting.
038We, you know, we we want people to want to to look forward to attending every year and celebrating. >> was it was wonderful and very meaningful. And especially when like you at least you know one or two of the people um in this being a small community, I think a lot of people want to be there and honor. And at the same time, I mean, what you guys are doing you're creating uh funds for scholarships as well. Thank you. And um thank you to Trustee Frutos and Dr. Ramirez who are also on the committee and I know it this has been a And and Marci as well. And this has been like a project that, you know, we were working on all year and it means a lot to all of us. Thank you. All
039right, thank you. All right, moving on to uh 781 action items uh 2026 CSBA delegate assembly runoff election. Would you like to take this? Sure, why not? Um you know, we had done the uh election um couple couple meetings ago and there was a write-in um element which we wrote in uh Tommy Frutos, our dear and beloved. And um we were the only ones who did. Amazing that. But someone else did too, Patty Lerner and Cam Real. So there's they've both been um essentially nominated, right, to serve that position. So we have to vote on who we would like to vote for as a board. So would anybody like to make a motion? I think this is under preferential as well. I'll make the motion then. All right. What motion would you like to make?
040I'd like to make a motion um to support Tommy Frutos uh for the CSBA delegate assembly runoff election. All right, I'm sure this will be tough, but is there a second? Sure, I'll second that. All right. All right, so we'll move to a preferential vote um if there's no further discussion. All right, um all those in favor say I. I. Opposed? No opposed. All right. Uh board vote, all those in favor say I. I. And I'm I'm abstaining obviously because it's my name on it. You can vote for yourself. >> vote? All right, so I. Eh? Yeah, I think so. Uh all those opposed? Hearing crickets, we'll uh motion passes. All right, so we'll see how that uh that works out for you. Good luck. Um moving on, agreement with legal services Lozano Smith. So
041each year we renew our contracts with our um different uh legal teams that we work with. Lozano Smith if everybody remembers that uh our one of our previous main contracts was with AARLA and that we decided based on our JPA recommendation to move to a different um legal firm. We have always had contracts with Lozano Smith. And so this is just a renewal of their rates. There is no total amount on the contract because it's based on obviously usage of their legal team. So are there any um questions? >> Did the rates go up? No, not from last year. Oh, nice. Still high, but Yeah. It Yeah, they're all legal teams. And we have been just for the board's knowledge, we have been working with CSBA legal which is a um less costly option on
042the things that we think that, you know, are best to give to them. Jeff, how about usage? Um maybe like a And again, I'm just thinking in in in general, did you see that we used them a little bit more, utilized their services a little bit more this past school year versus others, maybe less? We actually, if you combine um both the AARLA and and Lozano Smith, we're about I would say 65% of that just by using Lozano Smith. And it really the way I monitor that is I get monthly billings from them. And mostly our billings are based on needing the legal interpretation of something, um giving us a recommendation, or asking questions are, you know, about Ed Code and what the ramifications are and different things like that. So we don't have face-to-face
043meetings very often. It's mostly just telephone calls of them letting us know, but um what what they believe is the legal aspect of whatever we're concerned with. All right, so um can I entertain a moment a motion to a moment? [clears throat] I'm going to have a motion uh to uh approve the contract with Lozano Smith. I'll motion to approve. I'll second. Um let's move to a I'm not sure if this is a preferential Okay, a preferential vote. All those in favor say I. I. Opposed? Board vote, all those in favor say I. I. Opposed? All right, motion passes. All right, let's move on to >> educational services quarterly report on U Williams uniform complaints. Who's presenting that? So as the board is aware, every quarter we get a report that is created by VCOE.
044They come out and do inspections. Um the Williams report is based on our ability to provide our students with the correct amount of textbooks and materials and things like that. And the um there was no findings um for uh any of the facility conditions, instructional materials, and teacher vacancies or misassignments. So we just need a motion to accept the report. All right, do I hear a motion? So moved. I'll second it. All right, we'll move to a preferential vote. All those in favor say I. >> I. Opposed? Board vote, all those in favor say I. I. Yes. Opposed? All right, motion passes. Um approval of comprehensive school safety plans. Dr. Santa Maria. Good evening again. Um we have before you um a recommendation for the Board of Trustees to review and approve the comprehensive school
045safety plans um as submitted. Do we have any questions or comments for Dr. Santa Maria? Uh just one comment. You know, again to just want to recognize and and thank staff. Thank uh the the police department for their partnership. Uh acknowledge Superintendent Weinstein, um Chief Aguilar, everybody just for their their work on this and it's just it's just great to see. So thank you for the work on this. Yes. And not only um Santa Paula Police Department, but also VC Fire uh with Chief Williams um also has reviewed and approved these plans as well. All right, so can I uh entertain a motion for approving the comprehensive school safety plans? I'll motion to approve. All right, do I hear a second? >> Second. All right. Um so let's uh is there any further discussions? Okay,
046we'll move to a preferential vote. All those in favor say I. >> I. Opposed? Board vote, all those in favor say I. I. Yes. Opposed? All right, motion passes. Next, approval of K-5 English language arts, English language development core instructional materials. Director Bergman. Good evening. So Ed Services is recommending the approval of purchasing our English language arts and ELD curriculum for the upcoming school year. This was last adopted in 2015. In November of 2026 a new ELA adoption is coming, but we did do a complete inventory at all all of our sites of the materials that they currently have on hand so that we're only ordering what we need for next year using restricted lottery funds. And not only does this give our students the curriculum that we need, but also will satisfy Williams so
047we continue getting good quarterly reports. Any comments or questions for Director Bergman? All right, so um can I have a have a motion to approve the K-5 English ELA ELD core instructional materials? So moved. I'll second. All right, any further discussion? Hearing none none, we'll move to a preferential vote. All those in favor say I. I. I. Opposed? Board vote, all those in favor say I. I. >> I. Yes. Opposed? All right, motion passes. Uh next, approval of purchase M&S Tech Group Circle MSP. So as many of you know, our um performing arts center is um lacking in a great sound system. And what um IT went out and they worked with the um performing arts department and came up with this proposal to improve our um performing arts auditorium. And I believe Hold on
0481 second. I will It'll be paid through uh Prop 28 funds. All right. Are there any questions or comments for Mr. Weinstein? I I'm I'm thinking big picture. If we decide to go with a performing arts center down the road, uh would any of this equipment be transferable? Can we Will it be able to be moved into >> would all be transferable. Obviously, we'd have to do the rewiring of the of, you know, the actual space, but the actual components that we're purchasing is it would be able to move to wherever we whatever we do, whether it's whether we do a complete renovation of what we have or whether we actually get another building, we can we can do that. Okay. And again, Prop 28, um is this going to be paid in one lump
049sum or over a period of of time? >> It'll be paid in one school year. >> School year. Okay. But um we'll be paying in increments as they're installed, kind of like a construction contract. >> Yeah. Yeah. Okay. And then one final uh question. So, um only because I'm still trying to put my head around Prop 28 and and again, I I I I I love the idea, I support it, I want to make sure that we're we're there, but is something like this Is this particular project going to take from any of our elementary sites or middle school site? No, they're they're they're still fully funded by Prop 28. Prop Prop 28 is site specific. Every site has its own allocation. >> Okay. Okay. Yeah, I just Thank you for asking that questions cuz
050just the equity that we're being fair across the board through our elementary or middle schools and high school. Well, I mean >> for doing that, whoever did that review. This is for the auditorium, correct? >> No, but the Prop 28 fund. Oh, yeah. No, Prop 28 is is mandatory to be distributed, uh you know, by ADA of the site. Thank you. >> Yeah. All right. So, can I entertain the motion to accept uh the S&M Tech Group Circle MSP contract? So moved. I'll second it. All right. We'll move to a preferential vote. All those in favor say I. I. Opposed? Board vote. All those in favor say I. I. I. Opposed? All right. Motion passes. Um business services donations, right? So, our donations today that we're approving, um the Santa Paula Federation of Teachers uh
051donated to the Young Writers Contest uh an amount of $625. Uh Dennis and Karen uh Neff donated to the Isbell Band for $100. Um Santa Paula Educational Foundation Young Writers Contest for $400 and Jerry Burns Young Writers Contest uh in the amount of $100. So, we thank each and every one of them um for those donations, uh especially for the Young Writers Contest, which is always a good good event. So moved to accept. Yeah. So, can we uh move to accept these donations? I'll move. So moved. Do I hear a second? Up. >> Second. Okay. Um we'll move to a preferential vote. All those in favor say I. Opposed? Um board vote. All those in favor say I. I. >> Opposed? All right. Motion passes. Human Resources approval of job description grant funded reading and
052literacy specialist. Good evening, board members. Um before you tonight for your approval, we have the uh position of the grant funded uh reading and literacy specialist. This is a obviously a grant funded position that focuses on improving student literacy outcomes through instructional coaching, targeted student intervention, professional development, and family engagement. Um we currently have um the grant has already been Last year, Barbara Webster was currently currently the receiver of this grant, and this year we have a school site another school site that is receiving this grant, so that's part of the requirements um of this grant. It requires us to create a position um to support literacy instruction for students, primarily from K 2 through third grade. Any uh comments or questions? Question. If we had it last year, so don't we have the description
053already? Um no. Unfortunately, last year Well, we had it the year This is the second year. Last year was the second year that the school had it, and there was no um job description in place to uh for this grant. They have the position in place, but there was never a formalized job description brought to the board. So, um in receiving this grant again, we wanted to make sure that we're following, you know, all the steps necessary to ensure that we're meeting the criteria of the grant and created the job description. Is it yearly or for 5 years? What's the span of the grant? Do you know the span of the grant? 3 years. Okay. And it's obviously a teacher. Yes, this is a teaching position. Yes. Thank you. So, back in March, we we
054talked about this new teacher job description, and one of the the concerns or questions on our end were can we build in flexible hours? So that we're also working with our students in after school program, uh so that we're we're almost not limiting the the the the time frame in when we can work with students. Uh after reviewing the job description, I don't see that in there, but maybe I'm just not seeing it. Is this the one that we were talking about back in March? >> No, this is a different um job description. Uh this is an elementary based uh position. Okay. >> But within um the contractual language already in place with the union, there is already language that provides us the opportunity to to shift uh schedules. So, if we wanted to provide
055um the intervention to students after school, that's something that we could shift down. And that one And this particular position allows for that? >> Yes. Okay. It just we we we felt like we needed to think beyond, you know, outside of the box, you know, whether whether in function in terms of delivery of service, whether in um you know, funding funding the position. Um I know this one is a grant funded position, and again, maybe it's the follow-up question to Trustee Arroyo is what We will visit this every year. Is this Is this a year-to-year uh funded position or what what would be the funding cycle? >> So, it's a duration of 3 years. So, at the end of the 3 years, um once we no longer had the grant, we would no longer be
056able to fund the position, but that will be um you know, it's it's already in the title, but it will be in the job post as well, so that um everyone understands that we can only fund this position while we have this grant. Okay. All right. Um do [clears throat] I have a motion to approve the job description of the grant funded reading and literacy specialist? I'll move. To adopt. Is there a second? I'll second. Okay. Um a board vote. So, uh all those in favor say I. I. I. Opposed? All right. Motion passes. Thank you. Consent calendar. Consent items are considered routine and will be enacted by a single motion. None of the items will be discussed unless a board member requests discussion prior to the vote of the motion to adopt adopt the
057consent calendar. So, do I hear a motion to accept the consent calendar? So moved. I'll second. Is there uh any discussion? All right. We'll we'll move to a board vote then. All those in favor say I. I. Yes. Opposed? All right. We will move on to board member comments. Um Trustee Fuentes. Um well, I was excited to attend Blanchard's uh green school yard groundbreaking. That was a fun event to go with the board. Um Also, uh I'm excited to announce about the variety show that is happening May 15th. It's going to host acts from Glen City, from Blanchard, uh from the high school, and from other schools around the district. Uh we would love to see you guys there. It was just one of those awesome games and I just couldn't see myself leaving um the the field. But so I just want to thank you all for your your patience and understanding. Um two, I do also want
059to mirror the comments of the safety plan. I know I I I know what it takes to get something like this out and get everyone on board. So just thank you staff for for all for your diligency and and making sure that, you know, that that that's a priority for us on our uh in our school sites. Um just want to give a shout out to Director Guerra and Director Bergman. I ran into you guys yesterday at the Ventura County Office of Education math I don't want to call it a podium, but I would say curriculum um set up where and and then also to your team. Uh that take that's a lot. Uh I was there in another role, so I got to got to see you guys there. Um it's a good feeling
060to know that that you've got comprehensive discussions and keeping kids centered for keeping our students centered for making those tough decisions. So uh just thank you guys. Um and and that's Oh, and I you know, with the car show I I I know uh we don't we don't hear his name a lot and I think it's it's worth noting, but Gibby Gomez who's uh one of our custodians for Santa Paula High School uh he's a local um uh youth advocate for our community. His kids went to school here. He's he's just such a uh a bright light for our community. Um and I know Gibby had a lot to do with uh with with putting together this event because of his contacts and resources. Um so just, you know, I know it's not him. He
061will never stand up and say it was him by himself because he knows there's a lot of people behind him, but just want to say uh excellent job there. And then my final one with the Santa Paula Youth uh Education Foundation um it's going to be an awesome event. Uh I know that the the staff is working really hard putting it together. And and and I haven't been to a meeting I would say the last one I didn't make it, but I know there's good things going on in this community and again just can't understate uh what an awesome place we live in. Uh I love this community and and just want it to continue to thrive and and uh and and just grow as a community. So thank you. Trustee Kumazawa. Uh no comments
062from me, Chair. Thanks. Trustee Aura. Just like to say again, thank you for the weekly updates for all the staff who spends time in giving us a summary of of what's going on, what you've done. So it's greatly appreciated and it's read. Uh and I also attended the ground school groundbreaking. Just thank you for everyone who showed up and Pulisa to take all those funny photos of us and um it was really heartwarming. Um Ms. Bergman brought out the kinder class and my grandson's in the kinder class at Glen City. So it it brought tears to my eyes just to be able to share a moment like that with him. So again, thank you so much, Ms. Bergman. And that's all I have. That's all my comments. Trustee Ramos. No comments. All right, and me
063uh just a few things. Um shout out to the Future Business Leaders of America um award winners. The on the they participated in the state competition. And we had several Mauricio Ortega, Cesar Ortega uh David Villalobos placed fourth uh um Mauricio placed second, right, in network infrastructure. Freshman Riley Riesman placed third. They're all going on to nationals. Um which I think is pretty cool, right? So uh shout out to them. Yeah, I did go to the groundbreaking of the um green schoolyards. Can't wait to see that activity. A little bit nervous seeing all those that fencing around the playgrounds, but uh such are timelines. Um the Cardinal Gala, right? We I'll be going to this this weekend. Um doors open at 5:30. 25 bucks. It's always a good time. And the silent auction is is
064great, right? So we'll see what they got this year. Uh there's also the Saturday um a parent conference on Project Isabella. Yes. >> Right? It's um going to be at Glen City from 8:30 to 2:00. Last year there was there was a ton of different resources uh and activities. So looking forward to seeing that one again. Uh and then finally just one note of positive news up from Sacramento. The state Senate released their budget blueprint. They're pushing back on the governor. Um they're committed to fully funding Prop 98. Um the governor's not, so uh it's up to us or as board members, you know, and the community to advocate that that that plan push through. And that is thanks to our own representative State Pro Tempore um Monique Limón. So um we should also give
065her props, right, and uh ask for her uh and continue to support her in her efforts efforts to further educational funding. So other than that, uh we will move um meet May gosh, what is it? May 13th? That seems like so long from now, but guess it's only 3 weeks. So with that, we will adjourn at uh 6:59. >> [music] [music]
