001okay today is wednesday february 9th and it's a regular meeting for the cyanide valley union high school district school course okay yes yeah it's in it's actually board dock so you just all members are present and they don't physically need to call their the united names of america my jewish republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with life so approval of the agenda uh i have a request on the agenda that um so our demographers are time dependent at 5.45 so my request is that we move their two items k2 and k3 to 545 when they have that time thank you hi mrs babcock aye mr olenberger aye thank you superintendent yes and we have our student representatives up first and shannon morehouse from santos high school welcome okay i think that
002this is working so for student council we have um intramural sports starting up in march that's taking a lot of planning so we're starting slowly on that farm we have we're gonna ideally start with a cornhole tournament um at lunch so that will be something very interesting and then we also set the date for our talent show called raw talent for the 18th of march and we will have announcements and sign ups going shortly up in the coming weeks um that's all on the school front and then we also have girls water polo who advanced to the cif round one playoffs and they played carpenteria yesterday and they lost by one point and they did a fantastic job and hannah allen was the standout player with four goals that holding boys wrestling also had seven
003wrestlers compete are going to be competing at the cif individuals on friday and saturday and they are going and then dancing is santino alvaro leandro contreras angel gonzalez tommy johnson tristan lake troy i'm gonna miss last night major mo yeah okay you all know what i meant and then aj signs and then girls wrestling also has two wrestlers competing um also on friday and saturday and they will be advancing and those are victoria bernard and lolita ortiz and malia was honored with athlete of the week at round table this past monday and baseball kicks off on saturday yeah i asked the question yes shannon could you tell us do we know yet where raw talent is going to be held i believe that we are planning on holding it as a little theater but um
004mr central is working on that thank you and next up i want to welcome hazel toggling colgate from refugio high school and i'll ask you um we um you can either use the microphone there if you'd like to present they're very welcome to use the podium as well whatever you feel works best students are getting acknowledged for displaying pride values such as positivity respect integrity determination and excellence students receive points from staff and can gain points their points for rewards such as greeting cards snacks gifts from themselves or others school gears etc we have monthly award ceremonies for attendance credits and characters and so far a total of 34 awards have been granted we had our third reward field trip last week for those who reached their monthly credit check goal and attendance criteria went
005to santa barbara with dean kagonis and php youth specialist maricela de la cruz we started a six-week support group focusing on drug and alcohol prevention led by our health and wellness coordinator claudia tenna and php youth program director maggie johnson on even days with ms jackson and mr gondolfo we're working on a victory garden and students are starting to lay off the design so far two seniors have graduated and six more attending and we have three teenage students through republic family thank you welcome aboard hazel thank you so next up we have our presentation um on mental health claudia kenya why yes um now it's probably a little more all right hi everybody i'm claudia kenya thank you for having me tonight i'm really excited to be here and then looking forward to presenting and
006kind of talking to you about how the year's been so far so i'll go ahead and get started on my presentation so looking at supports for all students things that we've been doing the whole year we've been implementing the white tri social emotional curriculum that is with our students who are taking avid 2 with jen rasmussen also students who are taking pe grades 10 through 12 and then it's also kind of being incorporated into art and also um some of it is also being incorporated into our avid one class um and looking at assemblies and events we had a huge red ribbon week this year um we did a whole week-long of events we also you know acknowledge suicide prevention and awareness month in september so there's a few more things coming up and i'll
007kind of get to that later in my presentation some other events that are coming up really really soon classroom presentations um i do those all the time on a variety of topics and just i kind of just wait for teachers to invite me um at the beginning of the year i do go into classrooms and talk about just health and wellness services so that students are aware and know you know what's available um and then a lot of the classrooms at the beginning of the year come into the wellness center and kind of do a tour so all ninth grade classes so focus health all the avid classes came in auto classes um some social studies classes again i just kind of open it up to all teachers um and so that's at the beginning
008of the year and then throughout the year i do a variety of presentations just depending on what the the teacher requests um this week i was with working with link crew because february is teen dating violence prevention month so we're kind of targeting that and working on some ideas with our freshmen so it's classroom presentations and then i send out wellness information all the time on parent square post it to facebook put stuff on canvas all the time for students there's stuff also on the website i also post in the parent newsletter with jackie wagstaff um so i'm trying as best i can to get the word out there so those are kind of things that i'm doing for all students or that the program is doing for all students now for students oh and
009looking at the wellness center overall i was actually really impressed and shocked that looking at you know i keep track of every student that comes into the center just for data purposes just since august there's been over 580 visits to the wellness center and this data is as of january 31st when i was preparing for this presentation so i think this week was really busy so it's almost probably 600 at least um so over 580 individual visits again that is not counting the classroom the classroom tours that i've gone through and snacks i also offer snacks to students any student that comes in and requests the snack they get a snack so 212 occurrences of a student asking for a snack um wellness checks so that's students just coming in hey miss penny i want
010to talk to you or hey how's it going or hey i kind of need a little break right now from class um and then that's also mean talking to students about services there are 428 occurrences since august of 2021 and then de-escalation strategy so that's when students are in in crisis or a teacher has sent them out of the class because they're emotionally just regulated and need some support so there were 83 occurrences of that since august of 2021 and again it's been really busy the last two weeks so i would say it's closer to 100 at this point uh suicide risk assessments i myself have done two um are i know our counselor rigo chavarin has also done one and then um our other school psychologist there has also done one for one of
011our spread students so a total of around five um and when i was here as a school psychologist for three years i was seeing it was about an average of six per year so considering that we're at about five we're a little over but you know considering everything with coveted stuff and you know i'm not unfortunately that's that's the case so um so how does it how do students get services so there is a referral process um i do look at data so i pull grades every either every progress report such as mid-quarter or quarter also at semester and we look at grades so students who have for example less than a 1.75 gpa or less than a 2.0 or adam automatically pulled in and we offer them services i also look at attendance so
012students who have received truancy letter two that automatically triggers a referral to health and wellness also discipline so two or more discipline referrals would be referred to health and wellness and then also there's a request for assistance form if you go to the health and wellness center webpage on you know on our district website and there's a request for an assistance form for parents so they can fill one out for their child a student form so they can self-refer and then the majority of them come from teachers and i also have that available in spanish for parents um and there's also calendly so any parent can schedule a time with me it automatically looks at my calendar and plugs in the available time so lots of times parents will go on there and make an
013appointment with me as well to refer their child or just talk to me about any issues that are happening and then of course anybody can email me or call me at any time you know whatever is easier for them so those are the ways that they can live for us and so this looks at our kind of our intervention process you know like what we do first um typically we try and offer a check-in check-out so that's where a student would either meet with a staff member before and after school or it could be by text whatever the student is comfortable with we try to start with that because that's the least intrusive we're not pulling kids from class it's before and after school but in my experience some kids don't want that you know
014they do want that individualized so if they decline the check and check out i automatically offer other supports just because i would not want them to go without anything so um we have mentoring so for example when they start off if the student accepts check and checkout then we would implement that for about six weeks and then after six weeks i re-evaluate i look at attendance and grades and see how they've been responding and if they're still needing more support then we would add another layer of support such as mentoring where they would meet with a mentor one time a week for approximately 20 minutes and they set individualized goals and it's really about the student um and it could be about anything that could be academic it could be self-care and really the the
015purpose of that is that it's more of a reflective process where they get to sit down with an adult and ask questions the adult house helps them come up with strategies you know okay you want to work on a school you want to finish three missing assignments what's number one what do we need to do first well i need to check canvas i need to reach out to my teacher so that's kind of the purpose of mentoring is that if they just have that trusted adult there also groups um i'm also running a skills group right now we're focusing on executive functioning concerns so organization planning time management goal setting motivation um so students also can join us a skills group as well and again that's with their peers um and so right now i
016have one that's going on we're in week six i believe um and they requested that we go longer so we're gonna go longer because a lot of the kids have been up because of coveted so they missed a few weeks so they didn't want to be cheated so we're going to keep going um and then also we have tutoring available um but that's more of a you know we have it here as a tier two but it's you know really any student can go to after school tutoring we just revise the tutoring schedule that's available on the website as well and that is with our credentials credential teachers and so then you know we again progress monitor after six weeks see how the student is responding and if we're still concerned we're still having you
017know some issues then i would request a pre-sst uh with their guidance counselor so that would be the guidance counselor myself uh the parent and the student we talked about any other issues that are going on hey we've tried this what else or hey we offered this and the students not responding and so i kind of feel like that meeting is really important and it's helped us to kind of problem solve any issues with the parent there um and choir just because student study team that's what that's yeah thank you and and i apologize i'm interrupting i did not time this well but we have our demographer um ready to come in at 5 45. he's on standby i think okay is he okay for a few more minutes yeah i think so okay yeah
018he has to be finished by 6 15. okay so i think we're okay so okay thanks for soc okay yeah so um i'll kind of just just brief over this um so at that meeting i would develop like a mini behavior plan to look at you know what is the function of the behavior and then come up with some some ideas and some steps and looking at antecedents and consequences to whatever the concern is um and then after that if we're still having some concerns then we would probably call an ssp at that point and get all the teachers in the room and really talk about what's going on for that student um and at that time we also again progress monitor and consider for some students a referral for special education at that point
019or a 504 just depending on what the needs are now this is not perfect right we're still in the makings of our program and so we're still kind of you know needing some more we need a little bit more time to fully develop this but i think so far we're doing a pretty good job only being in a year and a half so but there's definitely room for improvement it will keep getting better so here's kind of an idea of what we're doing and so these are just again some numbers and since august 2021 145 students have received a tier 2 service so check and check out 55 mentoring 51 skills groups 35 support groups 29 mediations 13 restorative circles six pre sst's 10 and behavior support plans that i've written are 10 as well
020so and then some more intensive services are increased the frequency of the tier 2 existing supports like i mentioned the sst we called about nine and a 504 plan or like i mentioned a consider for a referral for special ed so agents you referrals since august i've made about 40 months increased by now approximately 42 referrals for individual counseling for people helping people hospice of santa barbara we do have a grief counselor on campus on thursday mornings i've made five referrals um to her and then we also work really closely with cada which is the center for drugs and alcohol and i've made 11 referrals and then fighting back santa maria valley has a really good cannabis education program that i realized and i've made about four referrals but again this is as of january
02131st so it's it's increased since then um volunteer opportunities i would love for parents um to get involved um i do have a youth prevention task force we meet once a month and we really just plan prevention activities for the district right now we're working on alcohol awareness which is for april and also i hold a wellness meeting four times a year we just did our school health index which is like an assessment of school wellness uh basically a report card for the district um and we scored 76 so solid c so you know not bad but definitely you know some areas of improvement um so i would just really encourage all parents who are watching listening to please contact me i would love to have you part of any of our our groups right
022now we are meeting on zoom but i would welcome anybody and i would really appreciate your help so those are some volunteer opportunities for parents um and then some events like i mentioned uh september we did suicide prevention awareness month we offered a parent training um and that was with the local psychotherapist in october we did red ribbon week we also offered a drug and alcohol awareness prevention group and then we also have the rising scholars from allen hancock college present in the football stadium to the whole street to the whole student body we just had a professional development training with the staff from what is love of santa barbara which really focuses on team dating violence and awareness so she was wonderful and gave teachers some really good classroom strategies to support students february
023parents look out i'm going to be sending out that information really soon the movie angst um we've been given some materials and uh movie screening opportunities for parents i'm going to be hosting a parent night pretty soon it might be on zoom though but maybe we could watch some movie together and then do some breakout sessions and kind of talk about it it's all about anxiety and mental health for students and then in march we are starting with our aha assemblies aha is an agency in santa barbara who focuses on mental health and they are incredible they're coming out in march the 15th and 16th to do assemblies with our ninth graders so they will all be part of a large assembly here in the library and then they'll do breakup sessions outside and each
024group will have their own facilitator mental health clinician so that's in march and then in april like i mentioned alcohol awareness month we're starting to plan for that and then april or may i'm thinking of possibly hosting a spring health fair um and again if there's any parents out there who would like to help me i would really love that i'm going to need a lot of help to plan that i tried to do it last year but i was getting lots of no's because of covet and you know having people in groups and things but i think we'll be okay if we have it outside um and also may is mental health awareness month so we'll be doing lots of activities around that and then also the aha assembly will take place with the
02510th through 12th graders in may so there's just some events that are coming up um my current needs we really are in need of two-tier facilitators there have been lots of shifts in roles due to covid some you know just people moving on in their careers and so just just in january alone i lost like five facilitators which was really hard and so now i'm just trying to like pick up the pieces but that is definitely a huge need is to have more people available right because we can identify kids but then who's going to serve them right we need people um and then also definitely additional mental health support um so just in preparation for this presentation i did a time analysis of my day over the last two weeks to see like where
026is the majority of my time being spent and i found out that 70 of my day or my week is being spent in direct service with students so individualized so 70 of my time is working directly with students so that doesn't leave a whole lot of room for coordination and events and things like that so i constantly feel like i'm i'm always in catch-up mode so i think it's it's very obvious that students really need another person or another support or people other people available that they can go to um because it's obviously a need because that's where i'm spending a lot of my time so and that's what i'm seeing from students is that they you know yeah it's probably due to kobe but a lot of it is just being exacerbated by covert
027right so that's a huge need right now for students and really just meeting them where they are so i'll move on to the next one so just some ideas that i came up with because again we're thinking about you know how do we and i really like that the question that mr hollenberger posed at the last board meeting was that how are we being responsive and not reactive correct um so some things that i would i was just thinking about and i feel the same way you know is what do we do how do we build capacity right so these are just some ideas that i came up with so looking at a social emotional curriculum but looking at it for all students not just in specific classes but across the board and that would
028be possibly if we could during an advisory period i really like the ruler curriculum which is out of yale university i'm going to another conference pretty soon it's you know hands down one of the best as far as being research-based and evidence-based um but that i know it's definitely needed and so we need to kind of think about those tier one things that we can do for all students right so that we can be proactive and not reactive um peer counseling elective class when i was in high school i took a peer counseling class when i was 16 years old i was trained in conflict resolution i was a peer mediator i facilitated groups all the time at 16 years old i would love to either co-teach that class with the credential teacher i have
029my pps of course but i could be the mental health person in that class but i would love if we could offer an elected class for students students who are potentially psychology majors or sociology majors or even going into teaching and really helping build capacity and training students to train other students and that's what we did when i was in high school and it was great so i would have something that i would love to see here one day also professional development training i did a lot of training this past summer in restorative justice practices i would really love to see one for teachers implementing those strategies in the classroom again so that students are aware of the process and have those skills so that it's not reactive it's not after conflict has occurred it's
030setting students up for having those life you know those life skills really how to deal with conflict and then a peer mentoring program i kind of started that last year um but it was a little difficult some of the feedback i had from the students was that well i don't feel comfortable talking to a peer so i'm trying to think outside of the box i do have an incredible intern right now bree parker she's a former graduate she's also a cal poly uh intern a cal poly student and she is going to help me kind of resurrect the peer accounts the peer mentoring program so i'm really excited we're kind of working on that um i would also love an interim position if we could you know if we have the money and the funds
031and the availability to do that i just have seen what an incredible job bri has done and obviously you know we just need more support to be able to service all these students and then lastly mental health first aid training i know our district provided we were part of like a valley-wide training but it's been a couple years and that's another thing that i would like to see for teachers again just those tier 1 strategies and making sure that everybody kind of has those skills in their toolbox to support students so that's right hold that in one breath thank you maybe i say something to you claudia i just want to tell you how much we appreciate what you're doing it blows me away to see the extent the depth of what you're doing on
032your job it's gotta take its toll on you and i just want you to know what tremendous asset you are to our kids in our community thank you i have a question for you um you mentioned the wellness survey that you did um and we scored 76. yeah that was the school health index so look at that is there uh i i would like to see that yeah that's true yeah in fact i could even i don't know if i might be speaking out of the term but i could even post it on the website and then everybody could access it okay yeah that'd be wonderful yeah thank you and then at our next wellness meeting and we're going to review it and then create some some goals based on that what we're going to
033work on i'll be honest with you we scored really low in parent communication but some of the questions were like do you bring parents on campus well cody we really can't so we kind of scored low on some of those areas but definitely there's definite areas where we need to improve so so yeah i'd be happy to share that i can post it to the website great thank you very much for your work on dedication thank you thank you for your team and obviously what you do is central to everything else and you know we're here to support that okay so now we will be moving to item k 2. yes thank you so yeah bring him in yeah do you have him on there or where where do we go he should be right
034up the and for the public item uh k2 is the presentation regarding the california voting rights act and that development process presented by lozano smith so we'll have yes we'll have ben mcelhoney um from lozano smith and david lopez from crawford strategies presenting and we're working on getting david logged in here well i don't see any more all right coffee it should be loaded on here sorry guys i'm going to share my screen uh we have hi david we have it loaded here too uh we'll be either you can you can move through the slides if you like yeah okay great uh good evening trustees and superintendent schwab dan mcilhenny with lazada smith and we have david on the line here from corporate strategies we're here for our second meeting related to the california voting
035rights act and it's our pre-map hearing number two tonight as well so that's the the next agenda item and thank you for making a scheduling accommodation we appreciate that as well uh so tonight the objectives are to get some feedback from you related to the demographic data and the preparation of maps and we'll be bringing back maps you at a meeting in march to to look at the draft maps between now and then we'll also be gathering some community input and cooperation with staff to to assist in the process as well so with that i'll hand it over to david to to go through his presentation here okay great so uh turning to page one uh i'm sure dan covered a lot of this but the californian attack is now 18 years old and it
036prohibits the use of a large election systems when such a system impairs the ability of a protected class to elect candidates of its choice and ability to outcome an election so that's um that's pretty much the nutshell of the cbra if you turn to the next slide just a brief overview many districts are at large elections but what this process will do is convert you to buy trustee area elections and that's part of what we do is we look at demographic data and we create trustee areas where each candidate will represent and run from of course you'll all represent the school district but you'll help from that particular area so there's various types of elections here on this slide at large or from trustee elections um but the binary elections system is the only one
037that is a safe harbor from legal challenge and i'm not an attorney so i'll let dan answer any hard questions related to that i know he's really good at preparing people ahead of time um so i'll move on to the third slide which is our timeline here and we're here at the second pre-map meeting this this process calls for two meetings before we draft maps to get input get feedback from the board in the community as to some considerations that you might want to use for council vanilla prior to us drafting apps we're going to spend a good part of february uh drawing scenarios for yourself and a few other school districts that are going through this process in your area and the intention is the march 15th meeting with the first scenarios uh for
038for you and the community constantly um we hope to have three maps um sometimes two are all that's needed but we generally have about three maps to look at and um on those maps you know there'll be different reasons for why we wanted to draw those up conceptually and at that point you offer feedback maybe you say we don't like that math or we'd like another map and so we come back to the second meeting in april 19th with any revised maps and another hearing on on that's the maps at that time there could be another discussion there can be other revisions at that time because we do have a third meeting or what's called the fifth meeting in this process where we can uh we can continue this process through may and uh at
039that meeting um the board would ideally select a trustee area map from all the iterations that we've been through and consider a change in the election method with the intention of may june going to the county committee and having them approve your math and all of this is geared towards the november 8th 2022 elections where those who are up for 2022 terms would run in their areas and those who were up in 2024 would wait until 2024 to have those elections so this is the timeline of the process it could be accelerated but the minimum is four meetings you must have and we just generally when we work with council on this across the state we like to have a fifth meeting in case there's additional feedback or conversation that we want to have or
040the community input that comes out of it the the next slide is just an overview page slide four is the considerations that go into this process and i like to describe it this way all these check marks are important but the first two on the left are must they're absolute must in that each area that is created each trusty area has to be nearly an equal number of inhabitants you can have a 10 variance between the largest and smallest but each one has to be an ideal target and i'll talk about that in subsequent slides and that's part of the process the the other piece and second check mark is that when we draw up these areas they must comply with federal voting rights act and and what that means is you can't dilute any
041uh any protected classes historic minorities by cramming them all into one area more similarly you can't dilute a protected class by spreading them to the winds and diluting their voting power across all the areas so those are the two main areas that we we focus on to make this compliant with the cvra and the federal voting rights act the other check marks are also very important um and that we want to have each trustee area that's drawn up as compact and contiguous as possible you don't want to have a trustee area start here and then there's it's not contiguous you start across the say you know a highway and restart it it has to be just flowing and nice and continuous and as compact as possible uh we also respect communities of interest as much
042as possible and this is where we like to get feedback from your community and the board itself because um you know we can we can look at the synthesis that all we need to and as the water first we really carry our noses in it and try to pick out all the things to be accurate but what we wouldn't know is for example if if there was an amish or mennonite community in the san diego valley and you folks said they should be kept in one area because they're very unique distinct group their community of interest so we we rely on on uh the community and the staff and board to tell us if there's anything that we need to be aware of uh similarly we follow man-made or human-made i say and natural geographic
043teachers as much as possible roads freeways riverbeds you know i've even seen fire breaks in rural areas whatever it is that we can use as a natural geographic stopping point as we draw these up we also respect incumbency if possible what does that mean well when at a certain point when we come back in in uh in march and april with conceptual maps we'll have little dots or stars in the maps indicating where a trustee might reside we don't have to do that most most districts ask us to do that we won't have any other information on it but that way we can see you know if if each person falls in their own area there's two or more people that are in one area you know and we're trying to respect that if possible
044we also take into account local considerations uh sometimes larger districts or even your district might say you know we won't want each trustee area to have one and a half elementary school the feeder district's boundaries included so those are things we take into account larger districts like to have you know two elementary schools and a middle school if they can or they want to have one high school site in each trustee area if they can so these are things that kind of ideas of things that the board and the community asked us as we're doing this across the state and you might have your own notions of of what we can should consider as we draw these maps out turning to the next slide there's going to be some some census data that is from
045the 2020 census so this is really interesting because um the population categories listed on this chart right here are based on how people responded to the us census in 2020. this is how they chose to represent themselves and this is the count so if you look at this here there's 22 725 that's how many people took the census within your area and if you divide that by the five trustees that that we're talking about here for your district then each trustee area would have approximately a perfect world 4 545 people uh in each one it's not going to work out that way there's going to be variances some may have 60 people less one may have 80 percent more but the gist of it is that you cannot be more than 10 percent of a
046variance from smallest to largest as we draw these up population wise the column to the right here age 18 and over is only for informational purposes that's the folks that are 18 and over that could be voting um so as you can see the the drop from that is is the difference between people who are not 18 and over so it's a consideration but population and the next slide are what we primarily use to draw up these but a lot of times people like to know how many how many members of a voting population are in each area turning to the next slide which i call the heat map slide and i'm going to blow this up here because it has some good census information can you all see this okay so this is uh
047citizen voting age population estimates uh and it's it's completed by the american community surveys uh that they take a four-year aggregate data grouping and they they estimate citizen voting age population so over here is the the census identifying categories and the number of people who are estimated to be a voting age population are tallied here so even though you might have approximately 725 people who took the census and we know that about 18 500 are 18 and over this slide tells you how many people are estimated to be a voting age population so the difference of that could be people who took the census of not eligible to vote even though they're over 18 or maybe they're not a u.s citizen and they took the u.s census there's a variety of reasons that that turns
048out this way but what we use in this is to look at the largest minority group uh in this case hispanic and latino represents about 17 and a half percent of your district and we applied their residences and where they found the census blocks on this map so it's called the heat map and i can't blow it up enough to show you about let me try here yeah i'm gonna switch windows here for you what's that are you going to do i need to switch windows here for you to make sure that we're seeing your screen okay are you sharing it yeah okay we're not seeing that on our end okay let me let me shrink it down here maybe i can't blow it up that big we have the slide up though and it
049looks pretty good i mean we can try and zoom in okay okay that's fine it went off the slide so my point is these colored blocks don't tell you how many people live in each area these are trusty these are census blocks that's the smallest area of the u.s census that we can dive into to get a true estimate of who lives where and census blocks tend to be very small if there's dense populations and they tend to be large if there's rural or just areas where people don't live farming community a lot of hills and a lot of agriculture or you know a lot of areas where there's wineries or where there's a lot of horsing stables they tend to be very large here and the more dense areas around the cities that comprise
050your your district are a lot more denser so if you see a color that's really dense and it's really small that's typically going to have a higher population of this particular minority group than a big area geographically speaking because these larger areas that are colored might only have three families and that represents a hispanic majority in that census block so this just gives you a distribution of where those are and that's one of the considerations as we go through this map drawing exercise and come up with different trustee scenarios so that we can take that into account that's the second check mark on that list of items that we want to make sure we keep intact uh if we go to the next slide uh it is the basically a google earth view of your
051district's boundaries with terrain and so you'll see you know you'll see certain highways the 145 246 the san marcos fascinating up there people often say in their communities i think this highway would be a natural break point this road this ga feature and we wanted to have this uh potentially considered as we draw these areas up it may not be the case for your district but that's the kind of feedback sometimes that we get from people and it makes sense because you know your community is better than anyone else and if we can accommodate that in the process of this we certainly will some other examples if we turn to the next slide this is uh this is kind of the most common theme we get i'd like to keep neighborhood x neighborhood y and
052the same trustee area for this reason or that uh sometimes you know kids grow up together they attend the same school or they go to the same ymca at the same church and people just say that it makes more sense if they're over here on the west side of the district or the east side of the district so this is the kind of feedback we we hope to get from you and your community as we move through this process similarly the second slide it's a very good points for all districts or even some non-school districts that we assist this process with uh and that is that you know my sense is people will say my sense is that we should keep x major road or this highway and freeway is the dividing line all of
053this area this community should be in across two trustee areas again every trustee age should serve a multiple elementary or middle school site um and and so on and so forth or the feedback might be we think you should draw it with this in mind because it keeps communities together or things that we wouldn't necessarily know as demographers this is a better representation of our community if you can do this and that so that's that's all that goes into this process um and the examples we get from from the board from the community from staff are as diverse as you all are um we will certainly try to accommodate you and work with council to include as many things that you think are are um you know prudent to include or important to conclude that
054we're including these maps that represent your community better than maybe we see at first attempted looking at the census data uh that said are there any questions about any slides in the presentation or dan did you want me to elaborate on anything in more detail i would just add one point which is that with regard to the timeline slide the we should we will receive the maps ahead of those meetings and they will be posted to the website and distribute to the board seven days prior to the meeting it'll give you a chance to review them as well as give the community a chance to see them prior to the to the public hearing on the map review process i have a comment it's appropriate okay yes and that is um i'm currently working with
055the county education office on on the committee to redo the district mapping et cetera and what i found very helpful on the maps was to be able to have they used google maps and we were able to really zoom in on streets because when you're talking about boundaries they're saying here and there blah blah blah it's really important for the board members to have access to see those individual streets where those demarcation lines are etcetera so please make sure to provide that for us on your maps thank you thank you for that be back the other con the uh so the point on you know keeps this group together or ideas you know is is that after we see those first few versions so it can be um and it can also be tonight so
056if there are if there are comments that you have about particular neighborhoods that you think need to remain intact then that's something that we can consider tonight as well okay i'll put one in then um you know within the valley we're the only high school or within that whole boundary we're one high school um yet there's five to six elementary slash middle school districts so it's not unfortunately not one unified district i think it would make sense to the degree that it works within the overlay the acknowledgment of those individual existing school districts um could be a starting point in terms of lines that already exist so i'm hearing two points i think the first being that the distribution of those districts but then also being able to visually see them in the draft maps
057as well yes um those boundaries okay i see that you know i want to acknowledge that there's a member of the public raising their hand there is a public hearing coming up and public comments can be made at that time on this item so just wanted to acknowledge that um because it was behind the board back so that was why i brought that up so so um we've got notes on on your comment there thank you other questions comments from the board david anything on here that you want to add no i think those are reasonable accommodations we're familiar with it we can uh we can do two things with the google map we can provide a link where uh you know the boring community can zoom in on on things i've also seen some
058districts like to have the maps and then they like a super large uh map example after that where they can see where the boundaries hit or where the streets either or we can provide that and we can also have another map layer where uh you know in each scenario that highlights the elementary school boundaries for all i mean we work with built in solving and uh you know a lot of your other theater districts over the years and we have all the boundaries so we can superimpose them over the high school district's boundaries and you can see that as an additional layer that i think really would help visualize things well so so thank you for those comments we can do that we will i appreciate your feedback thank you trustees superstar thank you thank
059you so now we open a uh public hearing regarding the potential composition of trustee area prior to drawing of the maps pursuant to election code section one zero zero one zero sub division a one in public follow comment and you're welcome to thank you for you [Music] hi um i have a question which i know you can't answer but i'm going to ask it so everyone listening can hear it and it is in respect to incumbency so i'm just curious how that works we have three board members that were voted in we have one that's missing and we have you know you're obviously going to fill it whether that be an election or whether you guys decide that you're going to interview people and fill it and then we have mr olenberger who was selected
060so how what defines an incumbent and um with the board member that is missing will you fill that in time for that person to then decide on that trusty area so these are all questions that i think the people listening perhaps would like to know is it going to be full people is it going to be five um and is it three people that are the incumbents uh i'm just curious about that thank you good question thank you any other other comments uh yes go ahead yes um i'm not terribly familiar with this process although i have done quite a bit of research since uh we talked about that the ballard school board meeting and i i think as a member of the public and as the school community would be insightful if we had
061more information about that process of back and forth for example mr allenberger just sort of gave a comment um to to the consultants if those comments and those instructions and there's that advice coming from the board was made public as well as um the presentations i think that would be extremely helpful for the public for a late person to sort of just understand what the process is and what's going on and what's going into the calculus and what's being prioritized that would be my i guess comment or suggestions thank you for that can you can you just refresh us on what we can and cannot respond to at this particular time how that works sure yeah so we're making notes of course on comments from the board and the public but i do want to
062just mention that you know as as we post these materials on the website we'll continue to do so the district is in the process of developing a more robust web page dedicated to this item in this process although this presentation as well as last week's presentations are on the board's agenda materials posted online so those are available to the entire public right now so then as we develop the maps those will also go on to the to the district's website so that they're readily available for the board as well as members of the public and um i understand we're also working on developing a feedback loop for members of the public to submit questions and comments to the district as well as the process progresses can i ask a question and you can say if
063i can't answer it now um but it kind of piggybacks sue's question and that is let's say we draw the lines and there's there's two seats that are up for election in 2024 and those two happen to be in the same about trusty areas is this process meant to be that it it rolls over time so that we get to a point where you know based on election that there's representation from the different trustee areas or if you have an overlap once it's drawn out that some action needs to be taken to avoid redundancy in one trustee area so the the at-large trustees that were elected for a period of four years those terms will be unaffected so some trustee areas will be up for election in and at that time those those board members
064who are on the board and if they're within a trustee area that's sequenced for 2022 because that's another thing we'll talk about the sequence of when the five trustee areas are to be elected whether it's uh beginning in 2022 or beginning in 2024 those issues will be addressed through that process so if there are two trustees that are at large trustees that reside within the same trustee area that's developed and approved and they're also up for re-election at the same time then they would they would have the opportunity to run against each other at that time but what if they're not up for re-election for until the next cycle right so then are you allowed to have like the two incumbents in the same trustee area for the remainder of their cycle for the remainder
065of their at-large term they are able to stand on the board so they would remain in a large board member until their term is up so the at-large terms of an elected board member unaffected by the process thank you thank you okay so closing the open hearing and moving back to item three b3 superintendents update thank you i just want to take a moment to recognize and and thank our office support staff for the last several weeks of um adapting and shifting and um really just uh taking on a bunch of challenges um related to you know the recent omicron surge and those kind of things and people being out the office staff has really stepped up and i just wanted to acknowledge uh all they are their efforts and all their work so thanks
066stu thank you okay okay and now it's public comments is there any uh virtual other comments for the general general comments no okay thank you everyone we'll see you in a few weeks thank you thank you thank you thank you like i do have two and each uh public common third will have three minutes sooner craig hello again um first of all i'd like to thank claudia for all your great work at the high school with the students thank you so much it's it's really wonderful to hear how our students are being supported in her vision and i'm just um reiterating her need for two-tier facilitators and other support of an intern position and i would like to say i would be happy to volunteer so um i yeah consider that done for your fair
067what i wanted to talk about tonight was given the past events at the high school i would like to talk about another way of supporting claudia and our students by an addition of either a dei diversity equity and inclusion committee or a coordinator position at the district level so this person or committee can support students staff education curriculum and the school and so a lot of people say why do schools need dei well the answer to that would be that the world is changing the student population including ours has grown into increasingly diverse in every way in relation to race ethnicity social economic status language religion sexual orientation gender identity and physical ability so diversity focus on the makeup of our school our demographics such as race sexual orientation gender identity physical ability to name
068a few and inclusion is a measure of the culture that enables diversity to thrive that everyone's contribution be valued and that all students have the opportunity to be heard and participate so inclusion is about belonging equity is the provision of personalized resources and i'm sure a lot of you know what this is i'm saying this for everybody who's listening to um it's resources needed for all individuals to reach common goals in other words the goals and expectations are the same for all students but students and supports needed to achieve these goals really depend on the students needs so we know that this may take time but i feel like we can start my husband and i believe robert's here tonight too by embedding diversity equity and inclusion in our school's mission philosophy vision and core
069values so we together propose that the high school facilitate and help students staff and board members learn about themselves in a positive way and various aspects of their identities by providing staff board members and administration development on topics such as privilege implicit bias unconscious bias and reactions in time of stress encourage students to learn about their classmates and community and build strategic relationships among students and its staff analyzing relevant data also disciplinary outcomes for various racial groups and select curricular texts that reflect all students backgrounds so research shows that children and adults alike thrive in inclusive and equitable environments and students are still forming their perceptions of the world and i'm going to jump ahead from that bit can you uh please wrap it up yeah in three minutes so i wanted to mention andrea
070ray's so if you don't know andrea um and her work in the school um she is with inclusion include inclusion syv which falls under the non-profit umbrella of people helping people um and she has been an incredible research source she graduated from the high school so did her sons and her work with inclusion is benefiting the school today thanks to andrea this year we're honoring black history month um on our marquee and audrey adriana also plans for a black history celebration next week on campus she's planning other events to help bring the students together so i'm asking the board if it's possible to grant her the opportunity to talk to you about what she's doing as a graduate and a mother of graduates and learn how she's helping the students feel a sense of belonging
071right now at the school and community and how we as the school and the board can continue to support her work of inclusion and just have it grow so sorry that i went over my time limit and thank you so much for the opportunity to talk today thank you very party sue pretty much said everything but i am here in support of diversity equity and inclusion in schools i'm the mother of um a child with a physical disability she was actually the first child with a disability that entered ballard school in the year of 2000 and there was just a lot of um [Music] an awareness of what was needed and it was i became an advocate for people with disabilities and um that story i wanted to tell was a few years ago more
072than a few years ago i was approached by one of the aides of the the disabled students here at the high school um i'm not sure if it's still separated um they came to me and wanted to do a field trip to my business which was an arts and crafts business and um the school would not fund it for whatever reason and i think that's a very nervous speaker i think that's an example of equity that sue was talking about um everyone should be allowed to go on a fun field trip and so i told the aide go ahead and bring them if you know if you can get the whole class here um i can't provide transportation but i can i can pay for everything and so the students came for um uh three
073days out of a week and what i saw was kids having a great time it wasn't kids with disabilities having a hard time or a bad time they were all singing to the music they were doing arts and crafts they were talking with each other and um and it just really it really moved me um how society does not see this and especially at the high school to separate um and not be inclusive um thank you okay so next is the approval of the consent agenda i'll make a motion to approve the consent agenda um okay thank you uh i have a question about the purchase order listing please so this is this is for you uh field number i don't want to give that 220459 yeah right for four thousand nine hundred and ninety
074two dollars and then the descriptor said security uniform yeah during uh sporting events and athletic events they have to like everyone that works the game has to have something that identifies them as district staff so there's shirts and um windbreakers that they give out annually to the people that work those games they say staff not security because we thought that seemed a little bit harsh so they just say staff on the front in the back in big bold letters perfect thank you thank you so much i have one more if i may uh it's under the curriculum the course of study the uh csu expository reading and writing course i don't know uh i was looking at the course of study and i just had a question because at one point it says the course
075includes five to six full-length modules drawn from three categories shakespearean drama full-length books and uh contemporary issues and when i went through their uh you know this is a nitpicky english teacher thing but i did not see any shakespearean drama listed at all on the uh on the curriculum so i was just wasn't sure if uh that was an oversight or because it looked fairly uh definitive about what they were asking for here and we did have um i had a meeting with um so i can't be her name right now but she teaches at pioneer valley she's been teaching um so um so yes i set up a meeting um so last spring three of our staff members did the training for the csu system um and patrick shattuck who also teaches for alan
076hancock um did the training and would more likely be the pioneer to teach the course um and and he had some questions with it so i found a good resource because the trainers um were making it sound like it was very scripted you know like if there was a a writing uh process they had to go through there was 25 steps he said do i really have to do every single 25 step because if they know this and this so i have to go through it so he was having some difficulty processing that but most of the school districts do this as their senior course and it gives them the opportunity to um if it's on a transcript if it hasn't put the c or better they're automatically placed into college level english um so
077i found the trainer i contacted the county uh the county education office santa barbara and they connected to me to uh the gal that works at pioneer valley she's been teaching it for 17 years and it has modules in it so so basically the modules are built um there's like a they call it an arc reminds me of the math teacher so i can't give you all the details but i do know there's an arc and there's a certain things that you have to do to meet the requirements of the arc she said very clearly that if you know your kids have met these standards or these these learning targets then you don't have to do every single part piece of component of it um patrick also had mentioned that he had some concerns because
078he likes to teach like that as anything they pretty much said as your play you can you can um change whichever you know whichever module you want out of it um so in a module you don't have to use the same text you can use a different text um as long as you follow the criteria within the arch to meet those um those things those components so he's using the crucible in lieu of macbeth is that how it works he's no he likes me he likes to use nick that okay because it wasn't listed in the course of study and that's why right on my question and that yes so so that was that was the point taken so he asked the same question he said i like macbeth and she said you can substitute
079any of the things that are in there as long as they meet the criteria of the arch so okay so this isn't so proscriptive he can make changes based on what's listed here is that correct yes and then she also does all the training through cal poly so she was very clear as to all of the components he had concerns about so we we worked through those before we good so he'll be able to do make that if you want yes and and catch her in the ride because that was another one okay perfect thank you very much okay you're welcome thank you yeah i have a question also about english curriculum and if it's better reserved for board comments i apologize but since we're already talking about it um at the junior uh college
080session for lack of a word there were you know um cal poly ucsb and westmont were represented and gave presentations on uh college admission and so forth cal poly and ucsb both said that there was a strong recommendation for five years of english i too am a math guy there's four years of school but meaning that you know that other schools offer curriculum that satisfies five english courses um i don't get the sense that we have that but am i wrong about that or should this be reserved for a later agenda then let's let's do that okay only because it's this got a discussion thank you okay just two quick questions then as it relates to other items one is on the warrant listing and there's a line item described as cop refinancing debt payment
081in the amount of approximately 260 thousand dollars alicia can you provide a little detail on that yeah so in about 2014 2015 the district refinanced a municipal lease that they had on the district this is just one of the annual payments for the new lease the new refinance lease the last payment on this lease will be march 2027 and the payment that you're referencing is one of two payments that we make a year the first payment that we make is an interest-only payment in september the second payment is a larger payment is interest and principal and that's the one that you're seeing there my other questions related or question related to under the curriculum category environmental science has a fiscal impact number of nine thousand i don't see one for the the csu topic we
082were just talking about or independent pe which is uh expected there could be covered under byu i think it was with an online offering is there a fiscal impact because associated with those so for independent study the idea is to bring it in-house and not have kids have to go out and pay for it um the financial impact you're seeing for environmental science and um if i'm if i'm wrong i believe it's textbooks so we need to bring in new textbooks for that course and i don't believe we need to bring in new textbooks for the expository the csu um vr erwc you're going to see mostly their their materials are their their do i have a motion to oh no we have a on the floor and that is to approve the consent agenda
083and uh well mr vara hi this is clevenger hi mrs babcock aye mr olympia motion passes thank you okay so the action items android number two so uh first one absolute surplus equipment i'll hand over to lucy yeah so tonight last board meeting we brought before you a list of obsolete items from the kitchen remodel so they went through things and you have two lists before you this evening one is a maintenance specific obsolete or surplus and the other is a kitchen obsolete or surplus if you notice there's only one item under the maintenance list that would be disposed of and not auctioned off everything else under the kitchen list and the maintenance list will go to the public surplus auction due to their um the value that they still hold so we're only asking
084for you to dispose of one item and allow us to auction the rest of the obsolete equipment the motion i'll make a motion to approve the list of obsolete surplus equipment i will take that okay discussion i got a question uh it goes to the surplus um area option right is it also posted somewhere publicly i've had a couple people in the community ask me whether it's a casual conversation about how do we access that so it's a it's completely open to the public they just register with the site it's a public it's called the public auction surplus and i can put a um like a link on our website i'll put a link on the business office website [Music] mr ellenberger aye welcome passes thank you okay resolution yes i um so this is
085a resolution to reauthorize the use of remote board meetings teleconference board meetings the original authorization was good for 30 days and so we're at that 30-day window so in the event that we would like to host a virtual meeting due to safety concerns in the next 30 days this resolution would allow us to do that we're recommending approval thank you and motion devotion to approve i make a motion to approve revolution 2021 slash 2022-9 reauthorizing use of remote teleconferencing provisions pursuant to ab361 and gc54953 second second i just have a question is why um are we planning on not recording meetings anymore for the public because the posting for the youtube link was not on the website today [Music] but in the future i think that idea is just a public comment card prior to
086that item so that the board knows that you want to make a comment on that okay and can i answer can i answer the question right there so if you want it if the link is not on there that's right so yeah so we we are we we do intend and we'll continue to stream our board meetings and make those available to the public and it should be accessible through our website and we'll make sure that those links are available and accessible mr ibarra hi mrs clevenger hi mrs babcock hi mr owen berger all right excellent motion carries okay so the next item is the comprehensive school safety plan um this is an annual item it's a compliance document that we're required to review and update every year bring to the board for approval it
087outlines our response to emergencies and how we structure our response teams to align with the state and federal responses and it's available for review in the district office there we don't publish the entire thing because it relates to safety and security um and we are recommending approval at this time thank you do i have a motion to approve this winning twenty one twenty two comprehensive school safety plan of all motion mrs clevenger hi mrs babcock mr olenberger hi thank you motion carrier okay um so next up we have bankruptcy uh on the board of trustees and possible action to pursue a provisional appointment or to call for a special election um so following the resignation of stephen luke we have a vacancy on the board uh the question before the board is um which which
088approach will we take will would you like us to take to fill that vacancy um the two options are first option is to make a provisional appointment and terry if i get this wrong let me know but um the provisional appointment or chelsea's here too so she can chime in um the provisional appointment would serve until the next election which is november election the other option is to order a special election now the special election would be a stand-alone election so the district would have to assume those costs and the estimated costs would be about 75 000 dollars to get a clarification there you said it would stand until the next election even though his seat is 20 24. so i'll let chelsea respond to that one yeah that's that's correct they serve until the
089next regular election do you want to serve here yes so um if you choose to go the appointment route that person's appointed would serve until the next regular election and then that would be there would be an election to serve out the rest of the term so the remaining two years on that term okay so to define regular we mean november 2022 correct thank you for clarifying that so that we have so are you asking for a motion to either um for either ask for either an election or a provisional appointment correct yes correct thank you jack for clarifying that well yes we're asking for a motion to either make a provisional appointment or order an election okay i'll make a motion uh for the district to pursue a provisional appointment to fill the um
090seat of steven luke until 20 the election 2022. i'll second that discussion i i appreciate the clarity um of chelsea and for lauren to ask that question um because um i guess the natural assumption is you would just finish the term of the person the appointee would finish the term of the person that you're replacing but your your point is uh legally it's just till the next election correct that's right the education code just has all these sort of nuances to it and that's the way it's defined there so it's a relatively short term and then whoever's elected would then just or who's ever appointed women decided they'll decide if they want to run exactly okay thank you thank you i don't think it makes fiscal sense for a logistical sense to do an election
091and given the nuance of the time period right it may be challenging and of itself to find candidates that want four months or whatever it's going to end up being so provision provisional is definitely the way to go okay so we have unemployed a motion to approve a provisional appointment to fill this the uh student seat there can i answer the question maybe for the public too so if we approve this provisional appointment what's our timeline then in which to make that appointment 50 days 60 days during the day from the date from the date of the presentation exactly so it will be a it will be a pretty expedited process that will follow very similar to the last appointment that you did which will involve you know applications being taken and interviews by the
092board and all those sorts of things and that will that should all be published on the district's website now that you've you know initiated this process then we can make sure it's as transparent as possible and anyone who wants to apply will be able to okay thank you very much i have a question just out of curiosity how long do you think this will take to get put up on our webpage since we did it a very short time ago very quickly right off that's what i want to hear and 60 days from the vacancy what was the official beginning of the vacancy it was meaning this is going to be on the next point it was the 22nd of january and yes it is the next meeting or we we would need to schedule
093one another one okay thank you terry take that tool mr ibarra hi mrs clevenger hi mrs babcock hi mr owenberger hi motion kerry okay so we are skipping to k4 now um supplement to the annual update 2021 local control and chemistry plan yes so this is a another statutory requirement it is new this year usually there is not a mid-year lcap update but with all the additional federal funds and state funds that came through the state wanted to make sure that we were filling out another plan and another update for them so this um update basically um if i can just mention some highlights um we had a plan going into this year and um cova hit again and so we had to shift personnel and so some people that we were hoping to be
094able to provide academic support to um particularly on our classified stop side we actually ended up needing to shift to support our code testing and tracing efforts which allowed us to keep school open and keep kids in school but it meant that some of the interventions that we wanted to put in place um we were not able to put in place at the beginning of the year we have been able to hire a bilingual aide for the start of this semester which was you know will be helpful for this semester our supplemental instruction and support tech who's doing seo work again has been pulled away but now the testing has kind of leveled off we're hoping to get him back in and doing some of that seo work and support claudia so those are those
095are some of the big really changes from what we thought we were going to be able to accomplish to what we've been able to accomplish there will be a more comprehensive update at the end in june when we do our lcap update um this was really just a mid-year check-in so i can answer any questions but other otherwise uh request actually this is just an information so there is an action required okay number five yes so this is um from our governance workshop back in december there was a request to bring forward uh board norms so um attached on the agenda are several samples of norms for a discussion for the board to discuss potentially adopting norms or looking at what norms are out there and might be useful for the board to consider okay
096so we will uh have a discussion on the example of the uh the government's norms that andrew has provided with us a question or maybe and i'm not sure the rest of the board helped me a little bit um i i and thank you andrew for providing those four different districts um norms uh quite a variety in different formats some shorter than others but very helpful um but i believe a couple years ago uh the previous superintendent was had drafted some norms um and i think we just got lost in the weeds if you will we didn't take any action on that but i know he was working on that in my correct world i believe so yeah yeah and so um not to say that we just want to start there but i think
097it would be really helpful if we got a copy of those because maybe some of the things are already aligned with what's going on in the district and um you know we could um help us with you know comparing and cutting and pacing or whatever we're going to do with with the rest of them so yes thank you for bringing that up um and i i believe uh i think it was just um friday i was looking through files and found reference too okay i still need to find the actual document i defined a reference to a handbook that was in development i think in 2019. so i will go look for that and i will provide it and i also know that um previously um we had um attached to okay this is my
098seventh year so i know i i've seen it somewhere we had attached to our um board uh agendas and packets uh there was a like a cover page or two that had board norms and responsibilities yes it was stipulated very clearly yeah and and so on i think it's a great also a great another piece that's a great guideline for us okay good great can you comment on the samples or um the one comment i would add i think one of the biggest objectives right with that discussion back in december um was facilitating excuse me um more transparency in terms of agenda development and i think over the last month or two we've made good progress in that area and so um with wanting to crystallize something you know more formally what we what we
099were talking about where is it whether it's a previous draft and just crystallize it to to current or what have you i think the good news is that we've made progress in the absence of the formal document in terms of some of those objectives that we're trying to achieve in the norm regard and this will be very helpful both to us as we continue to define our the board norms that will work for us and then also in helping onboarding and transitioning to three new board members in fremont so it does give us time um to retrieve what's already been done that's a little bit more uh representative of what the needs were at the time we can update those great any other um i'll just re rephrase me so i will take as an
100action item i will go find that document that was previously worked on in the handbook i will provide it out um and with me with a new board member coming on through the appointment and would there be interest in you know having another workshop at that time with the additional board member coming on with a new board member coming on how to review that document or how should i bring that document back to you so that we can actually i would say given the brevity of that [Music] yeah i know what you're saying i also think that for me at least when i was appointed and then two months later i had to run and i found it was very useful for me because we sat down at that point as a full board and
101we went through all the protocols and the norms and those kinds of things and i think that's really invaluable for a new member even if the new member conceivably the new member might want to run again you know hopefully we won't scare this person away whoever the person is i think it'd be useful right right out of the gate to to have meaning to have the document okay my document or have at least have some kind of session where we can all meet even if it's just for an hour or so to go over it maybe it's just a special session as opposed to the full-blown consulting yeah i'm just i'm just thinking um you know facilitated conversation to finalize the document and sorry how the board agree on that is the handbook yes potentially
102yes that makes sense yes thank um and just in my um homework assignment um i really liked the format and the design and the clarity and the easiness if you will of the pacific grove document okay um just it you know the others seem to and you've read it the others there's so much um extra in there that i felt um kind of dissuade a person from even wanting to read it it's kind of where the pacific grove one was a little bit briefer but it really got to the heart of of roles and responsibilities and and focused goals etc right up front and then it had an appendage if you will of um terminology and you know additional documents attached but i like that design i thought it was much easier to work with
103and to read and digest that's just me right okay is this something we need to we don't need to vote on this is um you've identified what the uh charge is yeah thank you for comments and correspondence um one categorizing it in the proper point on the agenda item is the point that was raised by cal poly and ucsb around five years of english i'd be interested to know what we're doing to to meet that um you know a lot of the a lot of the previous um curriculum things were like satisfying requirements um i'd really like us to adopt you know more and more proactivity as it relates to standards of excellence not just requirements so i'd like to understand what we're doing in terms of you know meeting that goal of those of
104those types of schools another comment would be around the concept of list of committees um i'm happy to report if it's not known amongst everybody that a finance committee will be meeting starting next week that alicia is kicking off and it's going to be a good start particularly around budget season so i think that's a good start as it relates to financial governance of the school and getting things in order and getting things a little bit more strategically oriented in that regard um but i'd like to see the broader develop that broader list of committees that you know many ideas been have been thrown around whether that be finance parent engagement dei um master plan facilities um foundation if you want to put it under there and so forth so more continued work on building
105out committees and really tapping into the resources that we have in the community to engage in that is going to be beneficial my third one is around is is a financial one and that's around the topic of reserves um we all well know that there's this line in the fan of three million dollar reserve and this suppose will be a conversation amongst the finance committee as well i think we should consider as budgets evolve and assets come in and go and change that um we evolve with that as well and not have it be such a black and white number but something that perhaps more percentage represented as opposed to three million like if our budget happens to balloon or to shrink you know three million obsolete or you know it's just an abstract number
106as opposed to whatever three million represents today just making up a number 20 if reserved is more of like a 20 25 30 type of policy as opposed to a dollar figure a question um so with that in mind we have a resolution okay so that is specific to the dollar amount of credit um so would we just need to make a another resolution with some flexibility between point a and point b or this percentage in that percentage or or is it or do we have to be real specific it's a great question jan but since i have the opportunity with chelsea here and we've had some questions about how much we can talk about things in this item i no it's a really good question i just actually want to clarify something with chelsea
107because i don't want to stray too far off of the discussion versus action which is agendas if that yeah where are we in that i think that that makes sense as a question i think that um some of your your agenda language is a little bit confusing because it references for discussion and the board is really only supposed to discuss the items that are actually on the agenda amongst each other so the idea of board member comments is usually used to sort of talk about you know the things that you're doing the things that you're interested in seeing at the school site and all those sorts of things whereas i think that where it's veered towards is sort of the things that we want on the agenda or things that we want to be discussed
108at a particular meeting and so then i think that's around that sort of agenda setting discussion and how what what's the avenue for board members to request that items go on the agenda does that make sense i guess it makes sense to me yeah okay so in response to jan's question like this if i'm understanding it correctly this this can be a future agenda item with the reserves that we then come back to and we would we would have that discussion research it i'd be prepared to answer those kind of questions or if there's a budget update then that question makes sense particularly you know in that context and things like that right like when second internet is coming up we can have the conversation around exactly thank you thank you thanks for the clarity
109one last comment um and this is around brandy um i said in our workshop in december you know depending on what sports team you're on you're a different pirate you know we have eight different pirate logos and fonts and colors and and and what have you and and in terms of you know cohesion amongst all students and staff and not only branding um which you know leads to other financial opportunities and what have you we have no consistency we have no consistency of story of who we are um again like i said if you're on one team you're one version pirate and if you're on another team you might as well be from a different continent in terms of what pirates you are you know and so it's um there's no cohesion there i'd like
110us to think more broadly around you know our story who we are what we represent from a brand perspective so that we can bring forward a more like professional uh story in that regard thank you did you have something yeah i just have one one question i'm asking for a clarification if i may um and this goes back about two and a half years ago daniel back me up on this we had a group of parents and students come to us as a board and requested that we develop an ap psychology course and we did do that and we had a couple of courses last year as i believe we're down to one course this year and i've had parents saying that they want to make sure that that course is available and i wasn't
111sure if that either uh superintendent or the principal could answer this for me because it is it is a one of those uh pathway pathways for kids going into ap classes because it is uh it has a nationally a very high rate passing and it's a maybe a little bit more accessible for kids and some of the ap classes and it'd be a great way to boost our program to get kids interested i was just curious to see if we were going back to two classes this next year or ah to interrupt i this will be coming to us um from the march meeting uh we we did ask our previous meeting to provide us a little understanding of what's available to our students by way of hp's and other courses so can we hold
112off uh my only concern was that the students are going to be signing up for classes in march and i want our meeting may they come after they do that so so can i can i answer it this way and michelle maybe my understanding is just just in general is that um if that's a course it's a course in the catalog that'll be offered as an option for students to sign up and we'll look at sign ups and see if there's interest and then that goes into that discussion that we will have in march about how courses are then offered but i just so that course will be made available for students when they go to sign up and then interest and numbers will play into that conversation that we have okay great thank you
113very much great yeah good so um see the upcoming meeting dates yeah the march 15. okay so now we are going into close our session
