All right, we're coming out of closed session back into open session. So, I believe Austin is going to announce some things and then Mike will announce from closed session. Uh yes, there was reportable action taken in closed session uh to approve a purchase sale agreement of 1661 Zinfandel Way in Redding, California as well as 1655, Zinfandel Way in Redding, California uh for a purchase price of 1.9 million. Uh the acreage on the combined parcels is 1.06. Uh the deposit for the properties is 57,000. Uh the combined square footage on the properties is approximately 15,500. Uh the terms are an escrow period of 180 days uh with an optional 60-day extension and Mike will give the votes. Yeah, report on the action taken uh in favor of uh of signing the the uh purchase sale agreement,

uh Trustee Gorman, uh Trustee Roberts, Trustee French, and Trustee Labarbera. Uh in opposition with no votes, uh President Orlicky and Trustee Manuel. Motion passed 4 to 2. Thank you. So, our meeting is supposed to end by 10:30 unless we vote to extend. So, we still have a couple discussion items and we have board member reports and any future agenda items. So, we will need to have a motion to extend with a time period if that's what the board would like to do. All right, there's a motion to extend for 1 hour. Is there a second? I'll second. All right, it's been moved and seconded. All those in favor say I. I. Any opposed? Motion carries. All right. So, we are now on item 15 discussion, which is board member attendance at graduation and promotion ceremonies.

Included in your meeting materials was a spreadsheet of the up-and-coming promotion activities that we have and we are looking for board member representation. And so, dates, times, and locations for our graduation promotion events are are included in the table and we would love to give some time for board members to indicate who would be able to attend which. Yeah. I will pass around a copy and if you are available and able to attend, if you could just indicate on the far right column and we'll move on. All right, that'll come around and you can sign in for which ones you think you might be able to attend. Otherwise, we are on item 15.1 point two, which is the board subcommittee update, Mike. Uh so uh for the sake of time, I can share these slides.

Uh I can share these slides in a in a board update. This was just a report out on our latest uh uh conversations that we've been having around staffing shortage. We're landing on uh for at least for initial, we're looking on areas of focus being recruitment and uh retention. Uh included in the slides um and again, I I I don't necessarily need I don't need to take up the time here, but um we are looking at a uh partnership uh partnership with uh San Diego County Office of Education for uh intern support. One of the things that we're seeing from districts is they lack formal uh teacher uh teacher support programs. And so uh we are looking at um we are looking at this model here through the San Diego San Diego County Office of

Education uh very successful, high retention rates. Uh and so I'd like to I'll be passing this information on. I want to thank Claudia for her work. Uh I also want to thank the the the members of the subcommittee for uh some of the conversations that we've been having um as it relates to recruitment in addition to the partnership here with San Diego County Office of Education. Uh we are also um looking at I know Jacob, you've been working chapter wide uh sorry, countywide chapter of Educators Rising. So thank you for that. Um we legislation recently um passed to provide stipends for student teachers. So we are working with our institutes of higher education partners to make sure that that those funds are available for student teachers. Um we are We're looking at uh a very

promising uh CTE educator pathway through Corona-Norco model. Want to thank Jessica for sharing that resource. Again, this will be this will be linked. And we would then be looking at districts that are interested in doing this. So we we do have a early childhood education pathway that's that's budding, but this would be an opportunity for high school high school students to work with faculty and develop skills aimed at becoming classroom teachers. And then also just looking at on the recruitment end a campaign patterned after Alameda County Office of Education. Again, these are all these are all proposed. These are all tentative. But the the idea is that we would be meeting the needs of of recruitment. On the retention end of things, we are also looking at um Uh where are we at? Oh, sorry.

This is first and foremost, we are looking at a tools for teaching two-day training opportunity through Fred Jones material. And then we are also looking at a new new teacher internship support. And included in the in the slides is what that could be structured how could that that could be structured as a cohort up to 40 40 new teachers would be available. It would also be providing intentional coaching support, job embedded coaching support. So in the classroom, coaches would be able to support our new teachers and then also involving the administrators so that the administrators can also provide the support in in in classrooms. So, um that model is is there and that's in partnership Claudia, that the name of that partner again? Creative Leadership Solutions is are the folks that we've been in conversation

with to meet the needs for the retention of new teachers. Um so if we can jump down to next steps. So, next steps uh we do want to reach out to that that Corona Norco model um to talk to the superintendent of that district to learn more about how they rolled out that CTE education pathway. We also want to get updated information from our own pipeline efforts from our own classified to certificated pipeline. We we have I believe we have uh eight eight or 10 folks that have recently reached achieved their bachelor's degree through our Reach University partnership and so we want to want to make sure that we have the latest data from that. Um also working with on the campaign front are there success stories are there local folks that we can connect

with to help tell the stories that will help to recruit. Um as we have these conversations with proposed actions, we'd love to start putting together a tentative budget to bring back the board. We do have allocated funding. We would just like to populate it with with an expenditure plan. And then looking at conversations additional conversations beyond the the survey with HR to tap into uh strategies because this is a lot of this is aimed at teachers. There are other needs. There are other classified needs, instructional aids, accountants, bus drivers. And so what what we might be able to pull from some of our partnerships in district HR district HR personnel. And that is that's a that's a quick a quick update of the conversations that we've been having around staffing shortage. Thank you. The next

one would be 15.1 .2.2 Seal design. Uh included included with the meeting materials will be the the results from our seal design survey. Um It closed It closed at the end of April. And so, the the idea behind the design survey was to help get community input regarding what it what design features people want to see in the seal. And so, we've we've grabbed the results from that and a summary of some of the some of the narrative some of the open comment fields. Um responses on the surveys. And so, the idea is that these survey elements will then be taken to that seal team. And uh those things will be factored in working with the design uh the development of the design in that timeline. So, I just uh and again for the sake

of time, the results will be shared out with with the board and included in the meeting materials from tonight's meeting. And Arthur, I don't I don't know if you had anything that you wanted to add as far as next steps, but with these results, that will arm that seal team with the ability to say, "Okay, it looks like Mount Shasta is a popular response. Looks like rivers are a common element that people want to see." and so on. Yeah, I mean, the data speaks for itself. So, I mean, I don't think we need a special meeting with the seal team. I think we could just talk about it in open session right here. Uh and get get the material, have everybody review it. Come back with our next meeting with some ideas. And the only

thing we'd have to work on is we already have a marketing team with Scowie for seal like seal design and implementation. So, based off of the data, just everybody over the next month think of what you want it to be. Uh come back here with uh your ideas and what what you like and then then move forward uh as with the board majority of directing staff of what we want to do. I mean, there's some other things on here as far as like recommendations, uh what to do or what it what extent is it going to be. Uh so, I think we need our next meeting in June to talk about what exactly we're going to do with the brand or with the logo or the brand and the seal. Uh would be an opportunity

to do that as well. So, I think that would all be the next steps in the June meeting to put it on the agenda. Um that way we could talk about what we want want it to do like functionally. You know, is this just a stamp that we're going to do for all of our board action? Is it going to replace the logo? Uh think about what you would like to do and then design it from there. I think the design wouldn't take long. We have seven people to agree on a design, which might take like a couple months, I would imagine. A couple meetings. Uh and I think our team could create a lot of things. I mean, we talked about AI tonight. AI can create lots of cool things, but you might not

want it to create everything for you. Uh but I think we could all strategize of what we want to do. So, yeah. Take the data, get all the data to us, look it over, come to the next meeting with some ideas of what we want to do, and think about what we want it to achieve with the board seal. All right, thank you. Thank you. All right. Yeah. So, I think what like you were saying, the function of a is going to be key to how it looks. So, that's a key question to answer first is what it's going to be cuz when I've researched it, a seal is very different than a logo and so, we need to make that decision before we get too far down the road on how it looks. All

right, thank you. All right, we're on item 15 .1.3, Association of California County Boards of Education update. I don't have anything, but after this weekend, who's going to the conference meeting? I'll have stuff for you next time. All right, thank you. Uh so, like item four then, board reports and correspondence, 5 minutes per board member. I do not have anything to report. Jackie? No. Laura? So, um I did go to the Reach Higher Literacy Group meeting this month. Um there's going to be a second screening of the movie Sentenced. I don't know how many of you saw that when it was shown in September. It's a really good movie, but it's a hard watch. You want to see somebody do their own dental work with pliers? That's right at the beginning. But, it is a

good movie. Um so, it's going to be 4:00 p.m. September 10th and I think it's at the PDC. Is that correct, Mike? Is that Okay. Um PDC, right here. Um I was one of the panelists on the ACCBE uh literacy webinar last month and that was an interesting experience. I think it was good for Shasta County just to have that visibility of being represented because our initiative was much different than how Sacramento approached it. We had a small turnout on the on the actual webinar, but the people that were there were really engaged. It was a fun group. Um and then I guess they they post them all too, so hopefully other people saw it and it was an interesting experience for me just to see how much work goes into something like that. Just

the meetings ahead of time and working with these other people. So it was good. I was glad I did it. Thank you for doing that. Yeah, I need to work on my on-air persona. It's really bad. >> [laughter] >> But you did it. I did it. Um I did the Reading Pals Appreciation event that Mike showed the picture of and it was like this whole room was filled with volunteers and for me it was so impactful because a year ago there were only two schools that were doing it. Now just to see this whole room and the energy around it and that is that started with this school board. We're the ones that did that through our initiative for literacy. So it's something that we can all be proud of and um another thing that

you may not realize is that um Shasta County was the first county to partner with um Reading Pals and they'd been approached before and they're like, "Ah, we don't really know how to do that." And you know, we have this great Holly King and the staff here is just so great and they're like, "Well, let's figure out. Let's Let's figure out how to do it." And so we did it and now um Reading Pals is partnering with Tehama and these other places. So we were their pioneer in doing that. So that was a cool thing. Um and Reading Pals ends next week for the school year. I'm going to be so mad. So sad to miss my stretchy conversation. I was asked to be part of the 2027 Teacher of the Year selection committee and

reviewed those nominee applications last week and I always enjoy that assignment because it's just encouraging to see the great teachers that are out there connecting with kids and um and that's it. Thank you, Jessica. >> going to say too, I can't go to the graduations. I really do enjoy those, but I'm going to be out of town, so I'm going to miss them this year. All right. Jessica. Thank you, Arthur. Uh I got appointed to the uh public health advisory board and so today we had a good discussion about uh CTEs and pathways for health care. So, they really want uh community uh health worker certificates and public health uh certificate, so they're trying to figure out a way to put infuse those into like uh high school career readiness and also into their college

programs. So, where people that are either working in the field already can get uh certification in that with the job they're already doing and using their work hours to uh advance their their degree or a high school kid. So, that Shasta College is working on that uh independently on their own and I'm excited to see what they come up with. Thank you, Teresa. You know, I don't have much, but the last couple of months I've been um kind of digging deep into um the damage of SSRIs in the youth, especially in the school systems. Um that's number one. Number two, in the damage is done with screen time in early child in in in the early years. And because it every time I go into a school, all the kids are on a computer or

a tablet. They're not touching a book. They're on a computer. So, I've kind of been doing some deep dives into where those are, and I've come across some really um some really good podcasts, interviews um on what's going on with the reading and why it's so hard for these kids to read because the screens don't do them any good. They have to have the paper. They have to be able to touch it. There's too much distraction with a with a computer. So, if you guys are interested, I can send you some of the podcasts, some of the interviews. Very, very interesting. So, that's pretty much what I've been doing when I'm not taking care of my parents. Thank you. All right, we're on item 16, which is suggested items for a future agenda. Are there

any board members who would like to suggest an item to put on the agenda for next month? Arthur. I would just add if we were not going to put it on the agenda, I'd like to add um the countywide student body council just to talk about it as discussion next month. Okay. Yeah. All right, thank you. I will reach out and she she's graduating and she's got moving off to but I'll contact her and I'll hopefully have at least some idea of it by June. Hopefully I can set up a meeting with her within next coming weeks. I don't know about her graduation, but I'll figure it out and I'll have it back in June for you guys. Thank you. Any other board member wish to suggest an item? All right. On that note. Mike.

Uh so I I I want to make sure that we have the dates and the times for our June meetings because we have two very important items. Uh we are uh looking at a special budget study session that will be June 17th from 5:00 or starting at 5:00. That will also be uh our public hearing for our uh local control and accountability plan, our LCAP. So uh June is June is an important meeting because the LCAP and the budget uh need to be approved. There'll be public hearings. Uh if there are questions that we will actually be reaching out Carmen will be reaching out to you because I'd love to have one-on-one sessions with each board member to answer any questions leading up to the conversations that we have around LCAP and budget because this

year it is interesting and it's uh a little bit unique in that uh if there is a failure to pass the LCAP uh the state does come in with some fiscal penalties now uh starting 2026 July 1. So significant fiscal penalties. Um so the special is uh June 17th and then the regular board meeting has been moved to June 24th and that will be adoption of budget and L cap on the on the on the agenda. So if there are challenges, if there are if if if there are calendar conflicts and you are not here like those are those that would be important information to relay to Carmen because we would want to make sure that we have a majority present so that that action can be taken. Okay. All right, thank you. So author

made a suggestion to put a the student body council on the agenda. You want to as an action item or a discussion item? Let's make it an action item because if we don't take action we can always bring it back for discussion at another meeting. Okay. I don't Yeah. We Yeah, we can make it an action item. All right, so do you want to make that motion and to add it as an action item? Yes, I'd like to add the countywide student body council as an action item. Okay, is it and I'll I'll second that. Is there any further discussion on that? All right, then we can probably just take a voice vote. All those in favor of adding the student body council as an action item for June meeting, say I. I. Any Any

opposed say no. All right, motion carries unanimously. Uh item number 17, upcoming events. The graduations are on there and the educator appreciation night. And with that we are adjourned at 10:39.
