agenda good item G PTA Council remarks foreign you're getting to me faster and faster every meeting good evening president Shea trustee superintendent Moore cabinet audience in attendance and those watching at home um I want to take the first opportunity to thank um trustee Richardson and uh assistant superintendo for being at the PGA council meeting and Reporting last night on Tuesday night excuse me um there was a lot of great information spent sent I also want to thank trustee Murray for her in sharing with of information with us and superintendent Moore I've got to tell you if your reflection on the Lindsay visit is anything that I heard like what we heard from the two trustees I'm going to be looking forward to hearing about it um one of the first things I want to talk

about is a continuing concern with our parents regarding child care I know that everyone is working on trying to get it done especially with this year closing and the waiting lists still being open and more people getting ready to be added to those lists there is great concern about the continuing need for either District or um the city provided child care and hopefully we'll be able you'll be able to work something out there and appease our parent base because I am continuing to hear about it um the other thing I'd like to touch on is the um we did the uh the district sponsored uh Daybreak uh mental health seminar webinar I got a lot of great feedback on that um there were some the only down point was the ability to register for it

and the way the Flyers were sent out uh it made it very difficult for some parents who wanted to register one of these schools actually created a QR code on a flyer that they sent so that the parents could then turn around and register for the meeting we had great attendance and um I have already reached out to Dr Spaulding about doing another one um I have been advised that Daybreak is willing to work with us on that and we'll just try and come up with a date later in the year before the end of the school year for the second seminar to be done um plans are moving forward very very rapidly for the stem science fairs at the title one schools all four schools have have their plans in place Spruce will be

the first school to go and do theirs in March they will be followed by Los Cerritos then Martin and then Sunshine or sunshine and Martin I may have that flipped but um if and what it was decided at the last counts at our at our last PTA council meeting that any monies left over and any supplies left over we will look at and reach out to a couple of the non-title one schools and see if we can't pull pull together something for one of those or two of those to uh you know just spread the wealth a little in that respect um I do want to touch again on communication is very very important with our parents and it's it's still very difficult for our parent for our ptas to get the message out based

on the fact that they only have access to their membership database and having to depend on um other other methods are very important to them I I know that um in Milani and I recently had a discu exchanged emails regarding um notifications of the board regarding events at the schools and she talked about wanting to make sure we kept our district websites um populated with information but it's very very hard to do that because we depend on administrators and staff at the school or the district itself and PTA is not the highest priority as far as putting information up on a website when you've got so many other things you need to do and if we had the ability to better communicate our events to everyone everyone would know what all of our schools are

doing all the time many of the schools take it upon themselves through their own Facebook pages their own Instagram accounts and through other other forms of operation um and other websites to communicate but the ptas are an integral part of each of these schools that they they are they represent and it would be nice to have that additional partnership a little more cemented so we do have a way to reach all of our population not just the the PTA membership because if we can reach the rest of the of the population our PTA membership Rose as well because there's value involved there that concludes my report for tonight are there any questions yes I do have a question um you mentioned Child Care is that more after school or is that uh for other children

of it is it is for all for the parents who either drop off pre uh before school or after school it's just a matter of the need for child care of course the after school is the most truly important as most parents can't just take off the time at 2 30 in the afternoon or three o'clock to get over to a school and um get their kids to their own child care and that loses work and but we we've always there's always been that up and down I mean I went my kids went through District child care and we were lucky enough to get in right away and not be on waiting lists but I've known so many people who have had to be on waiting lists we've had private Child Care on campuses for

for a small amount of time and then now we have the city services through park and rec each of them have their own difficulties their own issues with hiring uh their own insurance and uh certification needs and space and um with more and more of our parents needing the child care the the need for facilities is and and services are way up there I mean there are parents who have been on waiting lists for as much as a year to a year and a half so thank you thank you thank you item Edge staff Association Representatives remarks South of San Francisco Federation of adult educators I guess you can tell I'm eager to speak huh board members Dr Moore members of the cabinet fellow Educators and staff and community members present and watching from home

good evening I'm Elizabeth Bale students and I'm the president of the South San Francisco Federation of adult Educators I'm here tonight to talk about what we do and to ask for the board's vote to approve our tentative agreement we have three objectives this year to secure annual pay increases for the this year and next year to gain more paid prep time and to make improvements to our salary schedule this tentative agreement has met all three of our goals we are so pleased to have reached such a great resolution with the district thank you to principal Prasad and to Dr Spalding for partnering with us in this collaborative negotiation process this year we've proved that we are small But Mighty there are five of us I also want to acknowledge the hard work of our sisters

and brothers in the CTA and the CSEA whose bargaining power lent strength to ours and whose solidarity and support helped us to reach our goal many thanks to each and every member of our sister unions my colleagues in the ESL and CTE programs couldn't be here tonight in fact as I speak our evening classes are in full swing on Zoom serving students who work during the day or who need family members at home to cover child care so that busy parents can focus on their own education three of our five ESL instructors teach twice a day in the morning and to the evening one of these hard-working teachers wrote a letter to the board in support of our negotiations the board members have already seen it but I'm going to share it here and now

because I want it read into the public record as a testament to the value and the necessity of what we do in the adult ed program before I share her beautiful and inspiring words let me tell you a little about my colleague MS costalio she came to our program at the same time I did five years ago and she brought a tremendous talent and many years of experience that benefit our students Ms costalio was hired on to teach beginning low level and to work with students who have a minimal command of English members of the board may recall that the adult ed program was forced to close our literacy level classes at the end of last year so we started this school year with no literacy level classes at all for the entire fall semester

students who tested at the literacy level went to Mrs Costa Costello This means that Mrs costalio spent the fall semester using her considerable Talent and expertise to teach students multi-level classes including both beginners with a basic graph of grasp of English and students who couldn't read in their native languages or who didn't know the English alphabet let that sink in for four months she taught students whose knowledge levels ranged from no ABCs to hello how are you I come from Ukraine and I am a lawyer please take a moment to consider the implications and the weight she was carrying this situation was part of the backdrop to this year's negotiations since then we've been able to hire a new literacy teacher our beginning low class is a single level class once again but we haven't

let up my colleague Miss costalio like all teachers doesn't do it for the millions you can be sure of that because there aren't any Millions she like all teachers does it for the students excuse me this is what she had to say good afternoon my name is Christina cristalio and I have been an educator for 20 years and a teacher here in this district for nearly seven I'd like to take this opportunity to share with you the work that we all do at the sff adult ed campus every single day in our classrooms we provide a safe kind loving supportive and compassionate environment for our students our students walk into our classrooms sometimes lost confused tired often victims of assault and crime or fleeing a corrupt country in government and then they arrive in the

U.S in our community and in our classrooms and is in our classrooms where they can sit down and take the weight of the world off their shoulders we provide that for our students we provide that space for them not only do we provide a safe space for these wonderful people would be each them we teach them a language necessary to survive and hopefully thrive in this country we teach them in the beautiful English language and how to use it in their lives we teach them so they can be better members of our society better members of this community and to better serve their own families and children along with future Generations that may continue living in our country we do work that usually goes unnoticed and we thank you for noticing us we thank you

for valuing the great work that we do we know there's always more we can do on our efforts to secure a better future for ourselves as teachers so that we can work toward a better future for our students we will continue to speak out and these are my words now today we will continue to speak out for ourselves and our learners you'll be hearing from us again for now I thank you for your support all of you I ask for your vote to approve the tentative agreement and I wish you a good evening thank you thank you uh next one is South San Francisco classroom Teachers Association um good evening president Shea board Dr Moore cabinet members students family community Warriors um my name is Charlie Tapia and I am one of South San Francisco

classroom Teachers Association vice presidents I am also grievance chair I am a union representative for both Spruce and our district tosas Carrie many hats tonight I am speaking on behalf of President Burns as she is celebrating her son's 12th birthday happy birthday there is inspiration in taking part in influencing events and burns definitely came back from attending the recent Lindsay Retreat impassioned to share the information she gathered we are thankful the district has made tentative agreements with both our sister unions this is another positive reflection of how the district and our bargaining units worked very efficiently this year ssf CTA is feeling hopeful and re-energized for the future building a climate of collaboration hearing voices from all sides of our community and providing our students with strong learning opportunities we want to thank the Board

of Trustees president Shea Mrs Murray and Mrs Richardson for attending the CTA School Board breakfast this past Saturday morning working towards common goals helps create an overall sense of purpose and meaning we look forward to continue to work together on many things to come when all is said and done we all want the best for our students we want ideal learning environments and circumstances we want our students to play an important role in improving and strengthening the society thank you for your time good night thank you next one California's School Employees Association chapter 197. good evening president Shea honorable trustees cabinet superintendent Moore and audience um as you probably have heard we csca 197 has reached a tentative agreement this week and even though we didn't get everything we wanted um it will really immensely

help all of our classified School Employees with inflation and the high cost of living in the Bay Area I'm hoping at some point in time we can restore the position of district-wide campus security that has not been replaced and so some of that um school alarms going off in the weekend has fallen onto our custodial staff but we can work on that next time um but I am thrilled that CSA will get some financial assistance soon and much like our Union sisters we signed a multi-year tentative agreement um I was very impressed by Sunshine student Fiona and I was going to somehow set up a little agreement that before we go back to the table she could teach me Taekwondo but she left before I could ask no no um my crazy sense of humor

aside we're very thankful for Dr Spalding and principal murt and principal asbra for negotiating with us and I'm very excited for csca thank you any questions okay thank you thank you uh item I Personnel commission thank you president Shay the Personnel Commissioners meant on January 23rd at this meeting they ratified three position announcement they also ratified A5 eligibility lists the next Personnel commission meeting will be Monday this coming Monday February 13th at 5 PM in the district courtroom wonderful thank you item J items from the board any announcements Board calendar and board committee reports yes uh vice president Murray I wanted to talk a little bit about the Lindsay trip um I wrote down all of some stuff so I can remember but um we have been on a journey of change over the last

few years this work has been based in equity and meeting the needs of all of our students we have recently partnered with bayad who presented us with an opportunity to visit a school district that has made transformational change and that's Lindsay Unified School District everybody should write that down so you can visit their website they have a wonderful video so you can learn all about their uh their school district and the changes that they made about 25 community members including our superintendent staff two board members teachers parents staff members principals all came on this this trip and we were able to see what change looks like how it's done how it's possible to make transformational change in our own District our district won't look exactly like theirs but um but we we were all inspired

I think to do what uh do better for our kids um this particular School District started with um I think in the early 2000s with um 65 graduation rate and now they have a 95 graduation rate they follow their students and the last figures they have 75 of their students attend college 56 percent of their call their students graduate within four years 27 graduate within six years and two percent don't graduate um their Journey was started started with the question what if we could meet the needs of every student they embarked with a new strategic design a learner-centered performance-based model um it was very uh it was an amazing thing for me to see the students directing their own learning they they change the the way they refer to their students they refer to them

as Learners and the teachers as learning facilitators the classrooms as Learning Centers and the schools as learning environments so it's all about a culture of academic success and um and where I saw the biggest differences from other districts that I've seen in this district is that they it was the culture the everything was about the student and um and the students the students um not falling through the cracks all students deserve the same education and um and so they had a lot of um a lot of things in place that so that the students were they the students they changed the way they grade they so zero means that they they didn't know they didn't know the subject matter um one was they know a little bit to a little bit more I think three

was proficient and four was Mastery four is what you you aim for and you can move up um so it was kind of an ability-based grouping as well um so I can't do a Justice up here and otherwise I mean I could talk for the next hour or so but I I don't know that that that would be the best the best use of my time so I I encourage everybody to look at Lindsay unified website they have a book that they gave us um called Beyond reform and I saw it on I saw it on Amazon The Used Books for 1.58 and 399 shipping so if anybody wanted to buy the book um but but the main thing that I want to say about this is we are going to continue with our change

I'm changing the way that that we educate kids in this district and we've been working on it we're going to continue working on it but we can't do it alone so the parents and the teachers and and um administrators everybody has to be in this this mode that we want to meet the needs of all of our kids and that means means that when we send out surveys you know please please please fill out the surveys because that's a way that we get to hear your voices um we have two strategic planned Town Halls coming up I think March 2nd is a virtual one March 4th is in person look on our district website and try to make it South area it will be there but I the the main thing is I I know

not only for your kids but for all the kids and making making sure that um that all kids are moved along and that they they are able to be successful in this life and and and that starts with education that starts here and you can be a part of that by filling out the surveys and by coming to the town halls and and and you know putting your your time in so that's my plea for you please please please look up the Lindsay um Lindsay Unified School District website and ours and uh thank you thank you thank you [Applause] any any trustee president all I wanted to report is on the uh board committee and the Central Committee on organization is not meeting this month and so I have nothing to report until next month

possibly and that's all I had to report thank you thank you anyone else uh item Cape superintendency report thank you very much president Shay so I would like to start this evening with a warm and wonderful welcome an introduction to our student trustee Tanya Torres it is my pleasure to have you here miss Torres since the fall she has provided us with updates and information as it relates to the student experiences activities and events on the south South San Francisco high school campus we continue to look forward to learning what's happening on campus but we also are very excited to hear your perspective on items that come before the board and we are very happy you're here and wanted to welcome you aboard [Music] that's a beautiful welcome I love it all right the second

item I have it's on advanced placement so I wanted to take the opportunity to congratulate South San Francisco high school for earning the college board's advanced placement computer science female diversity award for expanding young women's access to AP Computer Science we'll go ahead and clap this award acknowledges 1105 schools for their work toward equal gender representation during the 2021-2022 school year South San Francisco High School is one of only 209 schools to be recognized for achieving this important result in AP Computer Science we are so very proud of our South San Francisco High School Warriors for the outstanding work that they are doing to engage more female students in computer science congratulations [Applause] so I too have an update on Lindsay I will try to skip over the parts that trustee Murray already presented on

I think the first thing is just recognizing that we had a committed group of individuals that went on this journey to this organization because we really care and value about learning learning what things we can do differently learning what things we can do better because we recognize we are here in deference to our students and so I was really excited that we had two board members our entire cabinet went members from our Educational Services Department our CTA president went other certificated and classified staff went parents school principals one of whom is here this evening and members from the bay Ed fund all attended this visit last Thursday so there were approximately 25 of us who attended and left truly feeling inspired about our observations our conversations and the culture in which we observe served the

trip was coordinated because as you heard trustee Murray say South San Francisco Unified has been on a journey of District transformation to Excellence and equity for all of our students where we place our students at the center and then we begin to shift the system and help all of the adults in our system shift as well Lindsay unified began their journey in 2006. they acknowledge it takes a long time to get where they were but they've transformed their system to prioritize students and their learning needs as part of the why behind they exist as an organization a couple of things that stood out as you heard trustee Murray say was really the positive culture that they've established they are unapologetically student-centered and they talked a lot about that they indicated when they started making these

shifts not everybody was happy they were people who were frustrated who wanted to continue the traditional ways that they had engaged and through this process some people had to make some hard choices and through this process a lot of people jumped on board and they embraced it they um took the time to confront the brutal facts about their student progress in their District they really sought out to chance hearts and Minds for all of their Educators and their staff they are at a place now where they have embraced A system that strives to meet students where they are and supports them then in meeting the standards for which they're going to be assessed on it was not perfect it is not perfect now no school district is perfect but there is a strong commitment to

continue the path so that they can serve all of their students as you heard they are a performance-based districts so they went away with grades and they focused on Mastery based on a four-point scale I think what was most impressive for me was the agency and ownership of the students students for whom they refer to as Learners they all led the learning tours they answered our questions and they were truly empowered in their leadership this included elementary students through high school students who facilitated these walks one student explained that they value learning and their role in the process and that they are expected and should always be able to answer these four questions where am I in my learning where am I going in my learning how will I get there and how am I

doing it's evident that they are well informed of the topics or the standards that they've mastered and what they need to do to move forward they are proud of the fact that they've also shifted from a time-based system time-based is you have to learn this amount of credits in this period of time or you just don't get them or you have to make them up in summer school they've shifted it to being a more learner-centered system where students might need extra time it might roll into the next year but they still have an opportunity to demonstrate that they can Master the concept and earn those credits there was a lot of enthusiasm learning and wonderings about the possibilities for what we can do in South San Francisco for all of our Scholars as we Embark

Upon Our strategic plan we absolutely believe that it is a perfect time to engage our entire community in this pursuit of reimagining the ways in which we are going to transform this District we are engaging in this process through our strategic strategic planning efforts and at the end of our visit principal Gonzalez asks so what's next we want to hear and learn more from our community on the best ways to build toward our desired future but in the meantime as we are working to develop our portrait of a graduate we want to invite our entire Community all of our students our families our Educators and Community Partners to engage in this work so we are going to host some Town Hall meetings they are planned for March 1st from six o'clock to eight o'clock that

will be virtual and March 4th 10 o'clock to noon that will be an in-person location to be determined we are going to have a lot of Flyers thank you for sharing the QR code information Mr Santa we are absolutely going to have Flyers that have a QR code that allow people to um RSVP and have access to the information we are launching a survey on February 17th please help us get the word out for people to look at the first draft of the portrait of a graduate give us your feedback doesn't reflect the values of where we want all of our graduates to be when they leave South San Francisco and so I wanted to thank you it is important for us that we involve and we listen to our community and all of you

have a seat at the table this is a journey in service of all of our students I want to thank the bay Ed fund because they embraced our vision in South San Francisco Unified they wanted because of that they wanted to partner with us in this work as we work toward deference to our children and because of them we were able to take this many people on this trip just to get a small glimpse of what the district has done to Center their work on their Learners so again we're excited to transform our district we want to give our students that same level of ownership and agency in their learning and the systems and the supports to so to thrive we cannot do it without a coalition of people who are willing to commit to

and help actualize the system for our students I'm really really excited to continue this journey and my last item so we have just a special group of people in our organization and oftentimes we don't highlight and celebrate them this week is national school counselors week and opportunities for our schools to recognize the important role that our counselors play in supporting our students and families our school teams are providing individual and small group counseling as well as large group lessons for classes and parents on a range of academic College and Career and social emotional topics February as we know marks a very busy time in the lives of our counselors who are engaging in tasks like talking to students individually about what courses to take next year coordinating academic and homework centers Helping Seniors apply for

financial aid and decide upon their next steps After High School coaching students through peer conflicts reaching out to parents and Community Partners and collaborating with teacher colleagues to support struggling students it's really my pleasure on behalf of our board and our cabinet to say that we deeply appreciate all of our counselors for all they have done and all they continue to do to support all of our beautiful students and their families if we can please give them a round of applause [Applause] and thank you very much that concludes my report thank you so much Dr Moore that's very inspiring and the energy is contagious thank you so item L student trustee reports Tanya Taurus our new spring student trustee welcome on board and ASB president South San Francisco thank you good evening board cabinet Community

I am Tanya Torres proudly representing South San Francisco high school as spring student trustee and ASB president thank you for the welcome to the board as I've said time and time again being here is truly a privilege and an honor being able to represent my school in such a way will always be one of my biggest takeaways and core memories from my time at South City so again thank you for the time for the space and the ability to have a voice South city is very proud to have a gender inclusive program for AAP computer science and stem field one of my best friends actually who's in the crowd Darlene harsana if you're anywhere yeah she's right there she took AP Computer Science last year and she's often told me of how rewarding it was

and how it propelled her to chase the greatest field of computers lines like many other women at South City that are now being encouraged to chase these opportunities I want to emphasize that this award and honor largely stems from the efforts of Miss Sun who teaches the class and it's very telling of how impactful it is to see students to see teachers that look like we do and have such concordance teach courses normally dominated by those normally in power and yeah on January 21st our activities commission held asb's annual winter ball themed snowball we made about fifteen hundred dollars and our student body had a great time dancing the cold night away following the week on January 27th our school culture commission hosted a lunchtime activity activity to celebrate Lunar New Year they sold pork

buns and sugar donuts as well as plain as well as they played traditional games the students had a great time celebrating the new year and we were happy to host these events that uplift and celebrate our students cultures and traditions also our student store has finally reopened and we are selling our classic black ssfhs hoodie as well as our limited edition South City pajama pants for thirty dollars um and also our election season has also taken off we are proud to offer various opportunities to join the class uh from being a class officer to also taking part in any of our seven commissions we've held two mandatory informational meetings so far as well as providing future applicants with all the information needed to sign up we're also beginning to plan our executive ASB tour where

we will visit our three local middle schools and their asbs with our executive commission as well as two alumni from their respective school we will be introducing them to our ASB as well as to our school and we will also be doing leadership activities we are so excited to meet them in early March as well as welcome other members their ASB class our senior commission and Junior commission have been working very hard this um past fall semester to plan prom which will take place on April 8th 2023. this past Monday we revealed the theme and location and we are proud to announce that this year's prom the Roaring 20s will take place at the San Francisco City Hall on another note our seniors have launched senior packages and the final date to purchase is tomorrow

February 10th the senior package includes a class hoodie t-shirt tote bag and a prom ticket for a total of 170 dollars the prom ticket within the package is 85 which is the lowest it will be prom tickets are being sold for 110 this week and we have fought to make prom tickets as is as accessible as possible from having a flash sale last December including low prices and Senior packages as well as starting prices being relatively low I commend our senior and Junior commissions for broadening the possibilities for students to attend prom as for sports our girls soccer team celebrated their senior night against Terra Nova congratulations to Tatiana Rodriguez Heidi Torres and Galileo our boys soccer team has also been doing very well they are third in the league with a sixth one two

record and yesterday they celebrated their senior night against El Camino um who they beat 8-0 congratulations to Fidel Jimenez and Jose Duran a girls basketball team also won against Oceania recently with a score of 60-38 congrats lady Warriors our boys basketball team also beat Oceana with a score of 66-45 senior Stephen Fernando Fernando scored 30 points which earned him a spot on San Mateo daily journals athlete honor roll um this fighter or annual hoops game will take place against El Camino we are so happy to host the Colts and we will be celebrating our Warriors from both girl and boys varsities um so congrats to Jen Ari Stephen Angelo Rubin Joe Preston Mark Nolan and Leo go Warriors [Music] um or annual School History Day competition took place last week the theme was Frontiers people

place and ideas we had great presentations from many of our students many of them moving on to the county level of the competition and they had a great variety of topics from Bruce Lee the Columbine massacre quantum physics the Marshall Plan the fire bombings of Japan and so on so great job tour Warriors and and also on a more serious note I've been hearing from a lot of students that many of them feel uncomfortable with being penalized for their attire in PE many of them want to be graded under understanding and effort towards physical education instead of whether they are wearing the right color or not it has come to my attention I don't know if it's you know but it has come to my attention that there is an ed code section 4966c that

prohibits students from being adversely affected if they fail to wear PE uniforms this is only what I've been told recently like very very recently and I was highly encouraged by the student body to reach out and report to the board let me know if there's any more information from surveys or really anything that I can provide to facilitate this like you know process um and yeah as many of us know this month is Black History Month I encourage the board to continue to honor this month and celebrate the black community by creating safe spaces properly protecting them from the hegemonic systems of society as well as a engaging curriculum that represents them and their part in history with this I conclude my report again thank you so much for the welcome thank you for your

will indicate that we in ed services made a mistake on that slide we use the wrong denominator so we apologize it looks like multiple groups are at 94 percent and that was an error so I apologize on behalf of ed services and of course to principal Gonzalez so with that good to see you this evening all right thank you I can come back next week foreign all right okay if it's okay with it I will pass and share my laptop with principal Gonzalez if that's okay thank you I'm gonna pass my laptop to principal Gonzalez that's okay thank you okay oh yeah okay okay thank you okay thank you Mr Irish uh good evening uh board president Shay Board of Trustees Dr Moore and cabinet and our South San Francisco Unified Community my name is

Leticia Gonzalez and this is my second year as principal of Sunshine Gardens Elementary School where amazing things are happening each and every day Sunshine Gardens is a community of caring parents devoted teachers and staff and dedicated Learners our wonderful school is committed to supporting every student so that each student can reach their fullest potential continuing our Focus this year on academic achievement and social emotional learning we utilize our Wednesday professional learning communities bi-monthly staff meetings and Leadership Community meetings to identify areas that we can improve upon and find Solutions our amazing teachers and staff who are here today some of them are here today are committed to creating a positive and engaging Learning Community for our diverse student body we strive to provide a high quality education for all of our students utilizing Innovative and

effective methods to engage our students while providing a safe and nurturing learning environment where we are very proud of our diverse and inclusive community that we've built at our school you can stay on the slide our school goals align with our El Cap and District priorities we are committed to building and sustaining a positive and collaborative School culture where learning is at the Forefront the data collected is and shared is used to drive instruction forward as we drive our car towards Equity strengthening our systems and using data to drive our decisions we have learned that revving the car's engine causes us to work harder and not smarter through our through training and art of coaching teams we have begun to look at ways our staff along with the leadership of our instructional leadership team can

go through the cycle of inquiry allowing us all to dive deep into adjusting our instruction and having data discussions ultimately leading to identifying needs and next steps in the academic and social emotional progress of our students our mission is focused on ensuring that all students are given the tools they need to be successful in reaching their goals while building character and celebrating diversity through positive behavior intervention and supports also known as PBIS this is evident every morning as we begin our school day on a positive note with morning video announcements which include our school and safety expectations and character trait of the month the consistent message to all of our stallions contribute in modeling positive interactions to students and other staff members every month Sonny the stallion a name chosen by the students in a

school-wide vote earlier this school year makes an appearance from their stable to award those students who have demonstrated the character trait of the month students are happy and are learning every day to make better choices our teachers are implementing tier one interventions in the areas of social emotional learning literacy writing Math and Science special emphasis is placed on our English language Learners low socioeconomics does students and special education students Sunshine Gardens will continue to support staff and relevant professional development opportunities that help bridge the gaps based on the learning needs of our students through the use of family surveys and school committees we have begun to re-establish our parent communication and hope to build a stronger commitment in the years to come our new all-cap goal 4 focuses on increased opportunities for special education students

to be in the least restrictive environment whenever possible this new goal allows for students to access the general education curriculum provides opportunity to learn both academic and social skills and eliminates barriers and provides access to the learning environment Sunshine Gardens is a Title 1 Community with 39 percent of students identified as English language Learners 18 students with disabilities and 53 socioeconomically disadvantaged in order to serve our student population we meet monthly as a care team or a Student Success team to monitor students who may need additional academic interventions behavior supports and social emotional Services the care team which includes our reading Specialists special education Specialists and school psychologists have had much success in helping teachers reach their students and match students to specific tier 2 interventions which are more intensive supports in order to abridge

student needs to their supports that's a new one so I was informed that this slide has a small error on it I was going to present on the other slide but the difference was all the numbers were correct except for a female at 89 percent male 87 students with disabilities 86 percent so this is the correct slide socioeconomically disadvantaged 85 percent and all students at 88 this is our attendance data um and with that being said the snapshot data is from December 12th through January 20th um which was one of our lowest this school year um despite our best efforts in getting students to school daily and encouraging positive attendance we were faced with the start and return from a holiday break an increase in covet cases winter flues and torrential rain that eventually resulted

in a school closure so every other month attendance counts have been in the low to mid 90s and of course there's always room to grow our literally data and dibble's data earlier this school year our students were assessed and literally and Dibbles kindergarten will be taking their assessment for the first time this February and as you can see from the fall literally assessment as a school 49 of our students are reading at or above grade level we expect these numbers to increase as we continue to complete our benchmark assessments for winter and spring which are happening right now for winter last year we made significant growth in our reading numbers with each grade level averaging an increase in about two or more reading levels per assessment window and we're on track to meet or support

surpass this number with our second Benchmark ending last week overall we are proud of the progress our stallions are making and as we look at data to inform our instruction we know as a staff that there is room to grow especially with our Els and special education students who are making progress at a slower rate so to combat this we continue to do the following number one Implement small reading groups daily so teachers can monitor student reading levels and Target their needs two provide professional development and structured literacy blocks so that teachers are able to tap into the several elements of a literacy program that is effective for all students three are special education teachers are receiving coaching and how to utilize the Spire curriculum four designated ELD is happening daily to help meet the

needs of our El students five are two reading Specialists have been providing coaching which looks like co-teaching modeling lessons and helping teachers use assessment data to enhance the quality of literacy instruction as we continue to remain student-centered objective and professional we've been able to analyze this data to figure out next steps our dibble's data has helped provide additional information around the acquisition of literacy skills and to detect risk and to monitor the development of early literacy and early reading skills which has been key in matching students with supports in our lli program and when meeting with our care team we have also provided professional development opportunities in coaching with the right tools which actually happened today our right tools programmed to establish writing as a focus daily these strategies are research based and standards align

and allow for teachers to model the right and strategies immediately in their classrooms we held our data chats in October where we reviewed all data from literally in Dibbles and discovered there is still work to do and we are committed to continue our collaboration to find ways to keep supporting students aligning our teaching practices continue data meetings scheduled for March and to continue small groups across all content areas next up is our math IXL data and so this year Sunshine Gardens participated in the IXL screener and so I'm proud to say that we were the only School in our district to take on this challenge so that's great news all right let's come on South City as we continue to identify math as one of the focus areas for student growth we realize that all

data is important in helping to move the needle forward this year we used our Extended Learning Grant to help prepare Propel the momentum of mathematical growth for our students by hiring a wonderful part-time math interventionist to work with our students our math interventionist works with students twice a week in grades first through fifth we held at math academic Centers before and after school for students who needed the additional math intervention and we continue to use math I excel in grades TK through five to help with differentiating instruction helping students grow in their math skills and teaching the skills directly to the students and need the additional support as you can see from the chart the fall and winter IXL assessment data shows that are far below and below grade level students decreased and are at

an above grade level students increased by seven students our instructional leadership team conducted a cycle of inquiry and in their profound Reflections in our math data analysis protocol they showed that they were committed to focusing on three common themes across all grade levels work on vertical alignment on math expressions develop a school-wide approach to word problems and build math confidence through finding alternative ways for students to share Mastery at our last staff meeting we began to deepen our understanding in math learning by giving teachers the opportunity to be students and use math manipulatives to enhance the teaching of math skills and build math confidence before moving on to Casp I just want to share the difference in percentages of students who took the cast over the last two testing years as it relates to Federal

participation rates despite dealing with the pandemic we had students attend school to take their Casp assessment during the testing window and we exceeded the federal participation goal which is set at 95 percent foreign we're gearing up for Casp 2023 and we'll begin our season of practice testing in March we will begin with the interim assessment Block in math which are shorter subtests that provide teachers data and give students the opportunity to practice the types of test questions the hope is to lower the anxiety of testing so that when Casp happens students are comfortable in using the technology and are familiar with the test questions here we see the comparison between Sunshine Gardens South San Francisco Unified School District California and San Mateo counties in grades three through five for two thousand for 2022. and we

use this as a data point in where we are and how much room we have to grow while our recent cast results have shown that we have some room for improvement I want to ensure you that our dedicated staff and students are working hard to make progress now that we have this data we can begin to build from this you also see here data from the California dashboard on three of our subgroups it's important to know where we stand especially with our most neediest populations so that we can best support the academic success our students deserve our El student population come from a variety of countries and speak over 13 languages and I have them all listed here um we are happy to announce that this year we are reclassifying 11 students to fluent English

proficient based upon their lpac scores from last school year overall the last three years we've reclassified 37 students and these students are currently being monitored to ensure that they are making adequate academic growth next year we hope for this number to increase as we continue to work in providing quality designated and integrated ELD at Sunshine Gardens we will begin our elpac testing assessment this month with our El students and our district El tosa Miss Hartman and our bilingual power professional Ms Gomez who have also been working with our El students and the teachers to ensure that they are given tools they need to succeed in the academic setting I'm very happy to announce that according to the California dashboard our students are making gains in English language proficiency since we have been back from our

holiday break we've enrolled seven newcomer students at Sunshine Gardens and we look forward to seeing their growth here at school the picture above shows our stallion buddies from two different grades the grade levels working together on activities tied to sel -awareness self-management relationship skills social awareness and responsible decision making although not a program specifically to Target the needs of English Learners it does allow for students to be a peer mentor to a younger Stallion and reach research shows the benefit of mentorship programs includes increased confidence improved student behavior and school connectedness which is what all students especially our new newcomers need as we continue professional development and continue the cycle of inquiry to see how we can improve our practice we anticipate that the practice of small group instruction will transfer over to all content

areas at Sunshine Gardens this school year we are working in the elements of structured literacy block designated ELD and effective math interventions the seven steps is our systematic way in how we progress monitor other programs that will help us grow and improve it's a cycle of continuous improvement with staff feedback professional development and monitoring so that we are informed in that what we are doing is working excuse me we are grateful for being chosen as a School site to house the Boys and Girls Club of the peninsula we have over 115 students in grades kindergarten through fifth enjoying the various programs offered to them in the after school care Boys and Girls Club provides a safe place to play grow and learn while empowering our students to excel in school become good citizens and Lead

healthy productive lives here you will see three programs that students participate in weekly diversity equity and inclusion book reads social emotional learning through second step and Power Hour homework club we are also fortunate to have the continued partner Partnership of gen in Tech with Gene Academy for our fourth and fifth grade students our school is proud to have helped pave the way for the future lab programs our school district is proud to feature today back in 2008 a Genentech employee wanted to start a tutoring program for low-income students that year Gene Academy was born and 24 Sunshine Garden students and a handful of mentors began working together the early days of Gene Academy and the relationships built with Sunshine Gardens teachers and Genentech staff helped the program grow to serving four Title One schools and

reaching up to 170 students each school year it has also been awarded the Kent award the program has paved the way for other future lab programs including the Helix cup and science garage students come to genentech's campus once a week and each student is paired with two Genentech mentors to work together on homework and Hands-On science projects and build their interests and confidence in science students practice language skills strengthen their academic proficiency and build capacity for science learning in the classroom through their experiences at Gene Academy these are just a few examples we use to build community within our school and Beyond The Four Walls of our classroom we are very fortunate to have additional Partnerships with science for scientists who bring science to life for our students our star Vista ysp counselors and school

psychologists help to support students and families with mental health and build peer Relationships by doing daily check-ins and creating friendship groups we look forward to bringing back our parent learning nights programs like Girls on the Run and other campus events to build a physical community of parents staff and students earlier this year we held Opera together La bohem in our multi-use room for students and Families Halloween parade Red Ribbon Week family meet and greet and Ruby Bridges walk to school date and a family assembly today we held our focalorical assembly with the bile Folklorico from South San Francisco High School in Mr Cruz's class and it was a great way to highlight the rich cultural traditions and beliefs through dance and celebration in addition a few of our very own staff members were for glorico

and just having a lot of anxiety around tests especially for a test that's a state level and I think I feel like giving that support to students again at that early age it makes it seem like it's okay it's just a test it's just one day and again a practice that I didn't see at my school so I'm glad that other students are seeing it at their school but yeah that's all thank you and welcome thank you so thank you so uh principal Gonzalez I would like to thank you for your great presentation and also thank our community Sunshine Garden Community your support your president here your Presidents here speak Peak volume how you support essential and Gardens so really appreciate your leadership to bring our family here so thank you for your participation and

I have several things I want to make a comment with your great work here really appreciate the attendance that our 94 of English learner attendance rate I know that is really heartwarming we have pretty for you eight percent of our students are English learner so with that high percentage of attendance thank you for keeping them in the school and I also really appreciate you share with us those informative uh measures so we can see how students making progress during this small chunk of time instead of just the uh cast c-a-a-spp data and that is summative it's quite hard to measure the progress if students are only making small increment and I also comment comment on your transparency and your braveness and your commitment to make changes for you to share with us all the casps

data and as you mentioned they are a room for us to to improve and then with your commitment I truly believe and trust that our student will be served well under your leadership so those are the comments thank you for your great leadership thank you so much I couldn't do it without my wonderful staff that's for sure and uh Vicki Estrada up in the front she is the attendance Guru calling the parents every single day get your kid to school so that 94 and up that's that's Mrs Estrada right there um I do want to acknowledge My Sunshine Gardens wonderful staff members that can make it tonight I don't I don't know if they'd like to stand up and and come on stand on it stand up and be recognized last year I did give

um I I did give a fun fact uh you know based upon years of experience like how much but I'll I'll spare you with that um but we do have 35 members 35 Staff members we have a core group um of 15 Sunshine Garden staff members who have more than 15 years of experience some more than 25 years of experience and we're fortunate enough to have this I believe it builds strong relationships between our newer staff and our school Community um and I I'm just in awe of the connections that they've made with the community they love Sunshine Gardens currently right now we have um a student and who is 24 years old sitting two seats away from their kindergarten teacher okay so it's you know and it's just wonderful I mean Sunshine Gardens Community

take 10 minutes break and resume our meeting at 8 40. okay thank you yeah yes minus I would like to call the meeting to order aged 37 thank you very much so our next item is Performance Management special education and pupil personnel uh director Jacob will review the service and support offered to special education students in terms of Performance Management as a tool for analysis and Improvement of performance good evening Dr Shea thank you for that warm welcome we have director yakub here ed services we'll start their Performance Management presentations first with our special ed Performance Management presentation good evening directory Coupe good evening president Shay Ford cab [Applause] members of our of our educational Community thank you for that my name is Sabrina yakub and I serve proudly as your special education director are

your director of special education and people personnel there's an issue thank you tonight is my annual State of the State presentation regarding everything special education and pupil personnel here is our agenda for tonight's presentation we'll start by grounding ourselves is there an echo no just to me thank you okay we'll start by grounding ourselves in our district goals systems and metrics we'll review some special education data starting with our state and federal accountability measures and then following with some program data we'll learn about well we'll end by learning about some special learning about our special education of people Personnel Department teams and now to ground ourselves in our district goals and priorities tonight's presentation will focus on lcap Gulf 4. last year we adopted this fourth goal for a couple of reasons the first reason

is because our students at the IEP scored in the lowest categories over multiple years in the academic achievement metric as seen on our California dashboard the second is because our graduation rate for students with disabilities was lower than 70 percent as we work through achieving our goals we use our car infographic as our system today I'll be focusing on the engine by sharing data and progress utilizing the performance management system this slide holds our metrics as part of developing the lcap as well as the annual updates to our three-year plan every Lea is expected to review its data annually both our performance on State and local indicators as seen on our California dashboard of which metrics you can find on the left side of the slide as well as the effectiveness of actions and strategies

included in our lcap using the performance match metric found on the right side of the slide we use these metrics to determine progress towards achieving our targets and goals and now to look at our special education data starting with our state and federal accountability measures the California Department of Education conducts an annual review of performance measures of our special education data Statewide for each measure there is a target districts are expected to make districts that do not or districts that do not meet targets are required to engage in corrective actions in order to meet the criteria for each measure these corrective actions are documented what we refer to as our special education plan or sep for short these corrective I mean because of the inconsistency of our dashboard data as a result of the pandemic

CD focused on compliance data for this year as an indicator of focus and ask districts to continue working towards targets identified in our 2019 plan which was our last adopted Plan before the pandemic hit those areas identified in that plan were achievement and Ela and math lre or least restricted environment in both categories zero to forty percent and 80 to 100 percent graduation rates as well as suspension engagement in regard to compliance we didn't perform at a rate that required of formal plans so we were not required to submit one to CDE this year however we were put on notice to ensure that data shows that 100 of plan and eligibility review meetings are held on time also will be an area of improvement next year further CDE has as of December 19 2022 added

service modeling to the list of compliance measures and is conducting a random sampling of 10 of our eligible student population to ensure that 90 of services were implemented between the months of February through April of this year before we look at our data I want to share a snapshot of what our data looked like for these targets identified in our 2019 plan which by the way because of the pandemic became Frozen as our areas of the target up until and through this year the first columnist chart lists all the indicators of which we did not meet targets as I work you through this I'll use graduation which is in the top row to explain this this chart further the second column holds our targets for example you can see here graduation we want to increase

that rate to a hundred percent we the next column right here label special education holds our metric systems and the First Column is our PM metric and the second are data from the California dashboard you can see here for graduation back in when I adopt this pan and plan in 2019 we are in the red on our Performance Management metric because of our data from our California dashboard just shown here we were at 56.7 percent graduation rate and that had decreased by 11.4 percent from the previous year and I put in our state Special Education data as a comparison in the Far Far Right besides inheriting this data when I started here that summer of 2019 I was also shared that our department lacked consistent procedures protocols and systems as well as a written and

active curriculum that collaboration was not coherent that we had no evidence of mtss which is multi-tiered systems of supports as well as a few other things so I set to work this slide holds a summary of that plan we developed that first year to meet those areas identified now to bring us up to current here is our current snapshot of our data for those same areas I continue to include to include our Statewide data as a comparison but I also this time included our district data to see how we are doing compared to our general education peers you will notice some improvements since 2019 and some areas have not areas that you will notice improvements are in our graduation rates suspension and expulsion and lre for students in the zero to forty percent category range

areas that have not seen improvements or achievement in both areas Eli and math absenteeism and lre for students who are in the 80 to 100 percent category range now let's look at some special education program data this slide oh this slide shows our district enrollment data broken down by school level with a comparison since 2019. overall numbers of students with iaps have went up across School levels as well as percentages of our total enrollment within each band this is not unique to South San Francisco but across the county across the bay and across the state we are seeing High demands of requests for evaluations the following slide breaks down these numbers further by school starting with our secondary data again I've bolded the increases if numbers and percentages over time our Middle School enrollment data

and finally our elementary data because our elementary data is a bit more complex I have a couple slides to add to this slide shows where programs were added at the elementary level that impacts the analysis of enrollment trends that you saw on the on the slide before when I started here we did not have the full continuous service options available at each site for students who required a teacher with a mild moderate credential each side had a resource teacher or an RSP teacher some of them are some of some of you may know him as but not special classes or the Learning Center or a learning center the sites that have these classrooms were Bury Bury Los Cerritos ponderos and Spruce so students were transported from our remaining five sites to those four sites because

having programs that allow students to be served in their home school is better for students and results in less transfers for siblings we have spent the past few years ensuring each elementary school has a Continuum of mild moderate services that way they can support their own students at their home school the exception to this is for those smaller populations that require a categorical Oracle or specialized program because those those programs are populated by fewer students they are placed throughout the district we have also spent the last few years building our specialized programs since 2019 at the elementary level we have opened three specialized Elementary programs two at Los Cerritos and one at Sunshine Gardens thank you principal Gonzalez this slide was created to capture our continuous service options available across the district those indicated with

stars and what have we built what we have built since 2019 and the green circles are those we have left to continue this the site the Continuum of services the way this charts reads you have Pre-K we have the different types of programs from the mild moderate credentials all the way to the moderate sphere from pre-k Elementary Middle High to a dollar and now to the final section of my presentation a tour of South San Francisco's special education of people Personnel teams this organization chart represents everyone in the special educational people Personnel Department those roles with the brown background are part of our district leadership team that is designed to represent and ensure each role in our diverse group of professionals and considered and that teams have a direct contact available to support them in

this specialty this team is here with me tonight if you could all plant please stand [Applause] thank you for all you do all you've done and what you will do let's start by touring the special education side of this chart related service providers deliver developmental corrective and other support services that are required to assist a child with a disability to benefit from professional education you can find them circled in the green and embedded in the programs circled in Gray this group of professionals is my most diverse when looking at the range of disciplines here is a listing of those roles the roles that these dedicated and remarkable related service providers special education teachers are my largest group of professionals as you can see the by the big circle on the slide here is a listing

by gradesman and program of amazing teachers Paras and classrooms together with our related service dividers in the support of our general education counterparts administrative and support staff we ensure our students are learning and included now that you've been fed a rich diet of data I want to share some points of Pride that you can relax into one theme you may see in this listing is our attempt to align evidence-based interventions for students through District adoption of curriculum that has most multi-sensory and meets the needs of our students for example you heard principal Gonzalez talked about spire and we also have new unique this important work is led by artosa Lisa melconian foreign [Applause] Pride to highlight is the transition Fair held just last weekend at El Camino hosted by our one and only transition coordinator

Mr Carl hamerla [Applause] the final two slides in this section hold many but not all of our other points of Pride the teachers the Paras and all the related service providers now on to the people Personnel side of things which can be found on this chart circled right over there we'll start with our Section 504 team I co-facilitate this team with aura abbing our special teaching Board of mental health behavior and assessment back far left corner [Applause] I have listed here our project for the year the topics from our support meetings last year built our current our current comprehensive 504 manual and this year's Focus will become aligned in it Miss abig and I as well as director Dr Hugh I'm sorry Dr you our director of student performance program evaluation co-facilitate or Triad facilitate

our counselor meetings I've listed here our projects for the year and the topics from our support meetings as you heard earlier Dr Moore mentioned it is school counselor week I'd like to take the opportunity to recognize our counselors and all that they do and finally our parent team or CPAC which stands for special education parent advisory committee this is a very important part of our department and allows us direct access to hear from our parent community the image on this slide is a screenshot from the CPAC page of our district website I have included a direct link for those interested in visiting it we meet four times a year and all meetings are on Tuesday nights at 6 30 PM our next meeting is scheduled for February 25th and I encourage everyone to come there

is an rrsvp right on our website right below the schedule to make this this process accessible just to know we are currently looking for board secretary if any candidates are interested please contact me directly at s yakub ssfusd.org that is all for my annual stay the state and everything special education people of personnel thank you for your time tonight are there any questions I can take or take down for follow-up foreign trustee Richardson thank you president Shea thank you miss yakub you know this uh this department is very um uh an emotional uh it houses all the children that we normally use to put away and out of sight and I see how much effort is made to mainstream these kids into a normal classroom and that is a tremendous effort that I can't forget

and every little same student that just makes it out of the confined whatever that they've been used to we used to do for special needs children is now part of the greater population so I I I begin there and after that I'm so grateful for your uh direct um involvement and bringing parents I believe the CPAC is the first um organization that brings parents and they're so grateful to be part of the discussion they oftentimes we hear the ones that are unhappy uh with the way the services are a given but you um bring in and you are transparent and tell parents and they're much appreciative because I get feedback on them it's a it's a struggle for families to have a special needs child and feel that they don't have access to the system

and you and your CPAC family of parents uh which is well attended by the way I always try to make it and I'm so surprised at the level of appreciation for the staff I've been to the adult education and I've Come Away with parents who are so grateful to have this for their Elder older child that is trying to mainstream into society to work and uh thanks to the training they received as adults uh even I learned every time I go to these um meetings that children these young adults uh even sometimes have to be trained on how to wrap up a a sandwich or something in order to be able to get a job somewhere but so I I appreciate the staff and your work and closing you know the gap thank you and

thank you for recognizing how far special education has come wonderful thank you uh trustee Anthony Divine so I had the pleasure of meeting Carl this weekend at the adult transition fair and it was really a lovely opportunity um to bring I think not just families from South San Francisco but also from around the county to know what's available for students with disabilities um there are a lot and what I think I respected most about it was talking about that a disability doesn't have to stop you from doing the things that students without disabilities can do right there was a lot of discussion of College there's a lot of discussion of training um the adult transition program sounds amazing I learned that we have an embroidery program and a screen printing program I mean you can

place your orders with Mr hamela Right There we plan to you know so like in my regular job I was like you know really good anyway um so I think that this is really really impressive um I know that it's really hard to make progress on special ed it is an area that I mean as I learned about you know the constant state of funding is like it's very hard to declassify a student even if they have made progress against their goals um so the two things that I would ask is just I don't know if it's part of the public record but like could you just clarify what is the difference between an IEP and a 504 plan oh yeah and you want to send you okay however you want to like no problem

no the difference between Section 504 and um eligibility under idea is really the difference between accommodations and Direct Services both both plans have accommodations um Section 504 is rooted in providing accommodation so that the the playing field is equalized for students with disabilities who may not need direct Services um once we're breaching that modification um uh hurdle that's so that's that's where we're looking at students with IEPs so the difference is whether you require an accommodation or whether you require an accommodation and services or further if we're looking at modifications we should be looking at special education also okay that gives me a lot of context because I there was a student at one of the schools that I visited and the mother was there and she said oh we should look into a five

or four plan because she's got this heavy backpack and it's hurting her back and I was like we can always look at everything yeah um so that helps me understand um the second thing is is that I'm guessing that one of the main reasons we were able to make so much progress on least restrictive environment for 0 to 40 is because of the new classrooms at the schools is that is part of it yes that is part of it because uh we've we've actually done we've done a lot of work with that group to um and we've got some we've got some great models Cindy Rogers at Ponderosa she really sets the tone she works at Julia Erskine and she finds ways to make sure all of our students in our classroom are included and

that's at an elementary level so it feeds upward um yeah that's great um and then I'm looking forward to seeing what we can make progress on in the next uh little cap cycle yeah so I didn't finish also the programs too because normally they would have been off campus away from the general appears and not actually even those little portions of the day yeah so thank you for recognizing that so yeah thank you for making progress we're trying we're trying the best we can um I when I my first time I presented I said we could there's hope I don't know if any of you guys remember then the pandemic hit threw me off a little bit I'm back though I'm back with the hope and I'm ready to do the work so let's do

this vice president Marie hi um I don't have much to say um thank you for your very comprehensive report um I was here before you were here and I can tell you I am so grateful for your attention to compliance and the the department today is so much different than it was in 2016 when I joined the board and um I appreciate that um I also met with Liza and um I can tell you that your staff loves you as well [Applause] so thank you for all you do and thank you guys for all you do I know it's a big job but um I appreciate it thank you I trust me yeah just wanted to take an opportunity to thank you I do remember your first presentation on this topic and I remember saying

thank you so much for the honest look at the data and I remembered it was a hard look but I left feeling hopeful because you are so passionate so organized and so strategic in your thinking and so student-centered you definitely left me with hope you continue to fill me with hope the lre metric to me what I saw was your inspiration and and your team's work to shift culture which is huge and I cannot thank you enough and I can't thank your team enough thank you thank you thank you uh trusty Taurus yeah a very impressive report very easy you guys want to have me in tears in a second maybe where's the hard question uh I do want to thank you I mean your dedication and your passion as was mentioned is very clear

not just you know through your presentation but the way you speak um but also the people that are here supporting you it's very clear that they have just the same passion as you do which is exactly what these kids deserve and what is what hasn't been given to them for such a long time and I'm so glad that there's people that truly care about them and also spread that need for everyone to care about them not just one group but everyone and it's in people like you so thank you so much thank you I Echo all my trusty fellow trustees comments and thank you for your great leadership and thank you for this great team serving our students thank you it's our pleasure let's move on to our consent agenda item P the following items

are submitted to the board approval one motion will authorize the action for those items so designated so may I have a motion and a second second wonderful it has been moved by vice president Marie and second by trustee Luhan so uh questions right no no question wonderful so uh may I have a all in favor aye aye wonderful any opposed no oh good okay motion carries excellent so let's move on to uh action number one Educational Services a approval of Youth audience of Northern California mou for 2023. staff recommends the approval of the mou between young audience of Northern California and South San Francisco Unified School District effective March 1 through December 2023 as presented to the board so fast good thank you second thank you it has been moved by vice president Marie and

part of the reason because we have to we we have to set up pay schedule Who's going to pay who so it's a fun job for Mr O to try to figure out who's internal and who's external so that's why it's in the mou okay that makes sense thanks no more questions okay all in favor say aye aye motion carries C approval of individual service agreement Isa for non-public school NPS placement staff recommends the approval of an Isa with Wayne Garden Children's Center MPS to fulfill individualized education plan IEP service agreements for the remark remainder of the 2022-23 school year as presented to the board may I have a motion and a second so moved second wonderful so it has been moved by trustee Lujan and a second by vice president Marie any questions yes

of the ssfusd minimum wage increase to 16.70 per hour beginning January 1st 2023 as presented to the board may I have a motion and a second summer second for uh so I have it has been moved by vice president Marie and second by trustee Luhan any questions okay all in favor say aye aye aye wonderful motion carries okay now we are in item three Business Services a approval of agreement with Hamilton Aiken Architects for El Camino High School Food Services and cafeteria Improvement project staff recommends the approval of an agreement with Hamilton plus Aiken in the amount of 1700 859 thank you for the El Camino High School Food Services and cafeteria improvements project as presented to the group to the board may I have a motion and second so moved second so it has

been moved by trustee thank you and then move second by trustee Anthony wonderful any questions I just had one question and it was just about um you know with the the improvements it talks about going into the bond measure and just wanted to clarify that this is not part of the things that need to be done with the bond yeah yeah you're correct this is not for the bond this is more right now to just improve the the flow of traffic for the students to get the lunch meals quicker yeah the bond money when he comes in in the fall probably will be addressing the other renovations thank you um any any more questions okay off in favor say aye please hi wonderful motion carries B approval of change order number one to the Southwest

construction agreement for the South San Francisco High School food service improvement project staff recommends the approval of change order number one to the Southwest construction agreement in the amount of 445 and 15 cents for the ssfhs Food Service improvements project as presented to the board I have a question I'll second and then go ahead with uh I believe there's a slight error on the uh promotion or the amount I believe it should be thirteen thousand four hundred and forty five and fifteen cents you caught it to Mr oh okay I was like checking numbers okay can we uh amend that to uh read uh what the uh report staff report reflects which is 13 445.15 instead of three hundred and thirteen dollars okay thank you so much for checking out really appreciate that so we

amend that motion and then so we have uh trustee so uh I'll amend the motion to change the amount of the change order from three hundred and thirteen thousand four hundred forty five dollars and fifteen cents to 13 445 and 15 cents perfect so may I have a motion a second so mode beautiful second so we have our trusty Richardson's motion and then second by trustee Luhan uh questions all in favor say aye aye aye thank you really appreciate that thank you so much so review of future agenda items and meetings any question on those wonderful I hear none so let's move on to uh our summary of board directs there were none thank you and then good and Welfare any comments from the board and superintendent let's start from the board uh good and

Welfare thank you um I had the pleasure of visiting South San Francisco high school yesterday on our site visit and it was really lovely to see um act you know students in action California is a totally different state than Illinois let me just put that on the record your schools are crazy um there's a vaccination clinic for the community coming up on February 27th at Spruce Elementary so you could spread the word on that that would be great and um our adult education programs are starting soon they had registration on Monday but if you've missed it I'm sure that they can accommodate you by going so classes start the week of President's Day so if you know anybody who would like to improve their English or do their equivalence exam check it out um oh

we're already there yeah we're there oh my goodness well we're well I have so much to do uh actually where do I start I did last week or this week we went to the uh the governor's first budget estimate Dr Moore and Mr Owen present and I always like to go to these things to see what's in there for us but it was at the County Board of Education and uh what I like to hear is things like what we're going to he said we're gonna we have to be austere we're taking in less money but we are going to see increases in our Arts programs and that's a real thing for me I I enjoy that and then uh I heard something about Narcan in high school for the overdose of fentanyl so that's

being mentioned in in the legislature and we also uh they they report that there's about 50 new legislatures and a brand new group uh being in the legislature and a lot of women uh in there now and I was happy to see that but I'm not sure but anyway it looks looks pretty good for us I don't anticipate too too much uh impact on our budgets and then I briefly went uh to the um uh the Lindsay Unified School District which is a performance-based system that uh this migrant Community is using to bring their graduation rates up in this uh uh agriculture community of orange groves and all kinds of fruit um it was by the generous uh a donation of the bay fund which were very nice to house us in a beautiful hotel

in downtown Visalia and we had a great group from all across the nation including Australia present in there so this program is exciting a lot of people who are struggling with their own situations of graduation rates and so forth and I was heartened to see our own staff in there saying that we have the same programs but it's I believe it's the delivery that is being um uh the success rate the success story in this uh visit and it was the Whirlwind tour of this school and um it was very um inspiring to see the students so engaged in the community of teachers very uh helpful to students and it was it's a totally different uh teaching environment and I was happy to be part of it and then yesterday we went to visit South

City High School with Mr asbra and trustee Anthony and trustee Murray was their present and I always enjoy going to the schools there's always something vibrant going on and the kids just you know they're just so connected with fun things that I I always enjoy myself so um and I can't think of anything else but uh that concludes my report thank you thank you thank you president Shane so I first want to welcome our spring student trustee Tanya Torres welcome it's nice to have you appear with us and I want to take an opportunity to thank the work of the bargaining teams the negotiations is not always easy and the fact that we are approving Tas is incredibly exciting I know that there's the teams at the table and there are many people working behind

the scenes to make negotiations successful so I just want to take an opportunity to thank everyone um and then just a quick announcement that the South San Francisco Education Foundation which began as an idea probably about two years ago is really growing and taking off and they're actually accepting donations um their donations can be made online at ssfoundation.org or via venmo PayPal and the first 25 000 in donations is actually being matched dollar for dollar um and I just wanted to take in one last opportunity to say thanks to the two trustees who made it to Lindsay unified um only two of us could make it and I'm just grateful that so many staff were also able to join it sounds like it was a really enriching experience thank you and vice president Marie um

yeah I I was able to visit Martin Spruce and South San Francisco High School in the last couple of weeks I always enjoy going on the school going to the schools because it shows us we get to see the students and and that's why we do what we do and um you know I just I always love it um I went to the PTA council meeting and spoke about Lindsay that was that was my purpose in going to the PTA council meeting I love PTA but I was so excited about about the fact that um you know we're taking another step towards trans transformational uh change um I took over John Baker's place on the equity task force and I was in an equity task force meeting and um I it's the this type of

work is why I live so I I appreciate being on the task force and um and I met some very nice people and had some great conversations um and for seniors um I was in a scholarship meeting and there's um and I will send you the list the the deadline is um February 28th and they're mostly stem scholarships um so it's the deadline is coming up really quick but they have some really great um scholarships some of the scholarships are just like these odd things and they say if you can fit it and and the fact of the matter is a lot of these scholarships just die because nobody applies for them so I will get you that list that you can send them around and Katrina yes thank you um so uh yeah I

guess that's oh um the other day we went to the El Camino High School pedestrian bridge that was completed It's amazing And if at El Camino have you been through across the bridge yet [Laughter] well you have to go oh there you go we got to see the new bathrooms there and the new water fountains and the science no is it the science no the academic building and science academic building um so um yeah that was pretty amazing I love seeing seeing things that we approve here and then actually see them and reality so really that's that's what I've done thank you very much thank you and trustee Taurus you good uh mostly said in my report but again thank you for the welcome yeah thanks wonderful thank you I've been president through the chair

I wanted to say one more thing if I may thank you uh I I didn't want to close without um giving a shout out to our I.T department and uh they've had uh challenges throughout since our last director left and I want to acknowledge their effort uh in keeping us uh connected if you will uh yesterday we had an outage uh and all the other uh challenges that we've had post storm so I wanna I didn't I wanted to say uh to Mr Molly and uh and um Clarence and uh Jolene malfati who was who are handling this beautifully that it doesn't go unnoticed and to thank you for your efforts thank you Mr Gomez we just want to say thank you um I have one other thing I went to the Sea we're gonna
