014president uh to provide some remarks um I'd like to First congratulate um my colleagues who have also been um elected by uh unanimous by the rest of the board um good evening everyone I'm extremely humbled by the trust my colleagues have placed in me and really truly honored to accept the opportunity to serve as school board president while today known as the South San Francisco Unified School District I feel compelled to remind us that the land on which we serve is the unseeded and stolen ancestral homeland of the ramatou alone people I want to express my respect and gratitude for the continuing work The aloney Descendants have done in educating residents about their history and contributions in recognition I pledge to continue to highlight the alone people's ongoing contributions to the region and be a
015respectful Steward of this land in my new role you know service has been a Hallmark of my life first Mark most profoundly by my service as an elementary school teacher in Richmond California there I learned the life-changing impact that a teacher can have in helping shape children's lives over time and through the course of serving in several other community based roles I heard directly from countless families that shared with me their concerns hopes and desires for a meaningful education for their children amidst the Myriad of challenges they faced many did not expect to be heard I focused on many of these stories when I decided to run for this seat I knew that I wanted those that had been marginalized to have an equal voice at the table as others have had I also accept
016this honor in full recognition that I am only one of five elected school board members of color in the district's 117-year history I enter the role of board president in full belief that representation matters in a district with such incredible diversity it is important to have visible diversity in thought perspective and experience particularly in leadership positions we are role models for the children we serve and I stand on the shoulders of those who pioneered and Champion representation of color in this role honorable and esteemed colleagues like former South San Francisco mayor Lysa Normandy Community B College Board trustee Maurice Goodman and our current city clerk Rosa Goa Costa who was the first Latina president tonight our board took action to assert that representation matters in this District both in words and action as board president
017I will continue this board's commitment to diversity of thought I respect and value each one of my fellow board colleagues I will work hard to ensure that our board continues to function as a strong governance team in partnership with superintendent Moore while we might not always agree I will Foster a culture in which we join in solidarity to put students first particularly those most in need everyone from TK to adult education each of us has sworn to put our individual interests aside to elevate the needs of our students in the district I promise to embody this calling as your new board president but to continue to reach our District's mission in enabling all students to reach their full god-given potential we must acknowledge that opportunities are not equal for all for too long systemic racism
018has fueled inequity in our society as a result of deep rooted injustices people of color continue to be disproportionately impacted by negative outcomes in education economic and health disparities and higher rates of incarceration that perpetuate the school to prison pipeline schools play an important role in disrupting these systems the very visible instances we have seen this year of violent and sometimes deadly killings and treatment of people of color at the hands of police have heightened our sensitivity to inequities and challenged our comfort with long-standing cultural norms the sense of urgency around racial Equity is palpable a national dialogue has emerged and gathered momentum the time for empathy understanding in action is now this board has the unique opportunity to elevate the voices priorities and needs of our young people especially black indigenous latinx and other
019youth of color the essential work that is needed is complex and requires intentional and decisive action it starts with all of us as individuals you know these are difficult and uncomfortable conversations to have I get it as with all of us I too must be cognizant of my own privilege and check my inherent biases every day in learning about these issues we need to push forward with racial Equity conversations that stretch us to achieve actionable Solutions it's important to be transparent about what we do know what we don't know and what we are doing about it the truth is that many of these people affected by these inequities are the same ones we serve and see and see on Zoom every day students parents and community members alike as elected officials we have an obligation
020to stand up to learn and to listen and to find Solutions together that lead to a better future for those we serve that's why I call upon this board to continue to engage with me in this journey it's not Eddie's agenda or Eddie's new platform or the superintendent or one school over another but a joint Vision that embarks us all from unions and teachers to staff to parents and from every level of Scholars from TK to valedictorians to continue breaking down racial barriers when it comes to the work that lies ahead some might feel we're moving too slowly While others might think we're moving too quickly but we shouldn't apologize for acting we must take the time to be thoughtful and planful so so we can build the processes and organizational infrastructure that will enable
021us to be in it for the long haul at the same time as Leaders we must create and sustain the momentum that will enable us to do our part to create a future that is Equitable and accessible to all we have been chosen folks to lead in this important time and as a board we have an extraordinary and historic opportunity before us to change the trajectory of today's youth through our combined effort we can create a path to meaningful change we can help to create a better future for the next generation of Scholars both inside and Beyond classroom walls lastly but certainly not least I want to take a special moment to specially recognize our classified staff our teachers and every individual who has bravely done the impossible to continue on despite all the challenges
022and hurdles we have faced these last n months I truly believe that we have the best teachers anywhere and that our incredible staff are the heart and soul of what makes us one of the best unified school districts in the area I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your service and dedication to our students thank you for not giving up on them thank you for sticking through it even when the rough got tougher and rougher thank you for all the sacrifices you've made the long hours on zoom and doing it with Grace with patience and with a smile thank you to the hardest workking cabinet and district office staff our diligent and highly skilled superintendent and our principles collaborative Union leadership and PTA parents and PTA Council leadership in addition I look
023forward to working with mayor adgo and our city council and city manager and Community Partners to continue to build Bridges build on Common Ground to strengthen our community I look forward to finding more opportunities to work together you know these Partnerships make our district stronger and our city better I am excited for what lies ahead on this journey for the betterment of our city lately we've seen an outpouring of Hope and Faith come about so I instill in everyone listening and watching tonight so let's continue to have a renewed faith that tomorrow will bring a better day that every season comes to an end as there is a time for every purpose under heaven and that better days are indeed ahead for us all I would like to publicly say that I am forever grateful

025it's uh Administration one resolution number 2065 honoring trustee Patricia Murray staff recommends the adoption of resolution 2065 to honor trustee Murray for her service as president of the board during the 2020 2021 um Mr Baker trusty Baker thank you it'll be my pleasure to read resolution 2065 honoring board Patricia board president Patricia Murray into the record whereas trustee Patricia Murray has served the South San Francisco Unified School Districts Board of trustees as its president from December 12 2019 to December 14 2020 and whereas throughout her tenure as president of the board truste Murray has conducted all meetings in a professional and productive Manner and whereas truste Murray has represented the board as it's president both in person and virtually in a distinguished manner at numerous meetings functions and activities and whereas as president of the
026Board of Trustees trusty Murray has encouraged Community participation at meetings stried for transparency in all matters the board considered and made sure parents staff and students had a voice in The District and whereas truste Murray has endeavored to strengthen the district's partnership with the city of South San Francisco and the city council and increase collaboration with local corporations and whereas trusty Murray has completed a csba training program spe specially created to educate board members in fulfilling their duties as an effective governance team member and has succeeded in becoming a MERS and governance graduate and continues to participate in several csba workshops and study sessions to help maintain a cohesive collaborative and productive board now therefore be it resolved that her fellow board members do herab recognize and honor this year of service by trustee Patricia

028for some words and some outgoing words as as president for this last year trust thank you first I'd like to congratulate you president Flores I'm sure you'll lead us in the best possible way um I'd like to thank my colleagues for allowing me to preside over our meetings during the last year I learned a lot I appreciate the many ways each of you makes us better a better board and the many ways you represent our district we have attended Council meetings been a part of the city's General plan 2040 committee the city's Commission on racial and social equity and the district and city subcommittee meetings we have attended County Supervisors meetings County covid update meetings and state census meetings truste Flores is a is a delegate for the csba the California School Board Association and
029trusty Luhan is the president of the SEL County Schoolboard Association every one of us has graduated from the Masters in governance program I am proud to work beside you I would also like to thank Dr Moore and her staff for their support and Leadership it's been a hard year they have put together task forces provided quality professional development for our teachers and training for our staff they have developed a training and help desk for our parents they have partnered with our community to meet the needs of our students we couldn't ask for better leadership and I appreciate it our principles and teachers have pivoted and pivoted and and all Al though teaching has not been in person they have given 110% to their students and have provided a quality education I have visited and observed
030many classes and I'm in awe of their ability to not only keep their students engaged but offer a wonderful very personal educational experience our classifi workers have kept everything going their dedication to the to our district is nothing short of inspiring our PTA has partnered with our district to keep our parents parents educated and our kids happy they have they have somehow in the schools they have normalized the the experience for some of the kids and still having the um Halloween events and all the the little events that they normally have and and I appreciate that having come from PTA I get it and I and I really appreciate it it's a lot of work we started this year discussing what Equity looks like we had a starting definition as follows South San Francisco Unified
031School District recognizes that educational Excellence requires a commitment to equity we believe that educational Equity means that each student receives what they need when they need it to develop to their full potential we looked at Homework classes discipline hiring and more by our fifth meeting we were at the beginning of a pandemic and voted to close schools covid highlighted many inequities and reinvigorated the work we have to do in April we approved an alternative to suspension program during the course of the year we have provided hotspots and computers and have worked with Community Partners and legislators to bridge the digital divide we provided food for all our families without H without having them provide identification so that all kids would feel safe coming to get food by May knowing not knowing that not all students
032have the same opportunity to succeed we voted to not grade our students in October our community Forum was mental health through an equity lens we are attending quarterly workshops Equity 2.0 we are reexamining our relationship with our police department and have conducted Community have um and have conducted Community feedback uh focus groups and um feedback through thought exchange we removed the Indian logo mascot from the south San Francisco high school and have given direction to change the name of junip pasera Elementary School the pandemic is allowing us to reexamine our systems and make meaningful change in an intentional way and with that I want to thank uh thank everybody Sor I'm I'm not as eloquent as as president Flor is but uh I want to thank everybody um this has been a year where I've
033learned a lot and I've appreciated working with with the entire District to really meet some some challenges that you nobody could have anticipated and um and one of the reasons I love this District so much is that we have the people that step up and and you know jump through hoops for our kids and so for that I want to thank everybody and president Flores thank thank you president Murray very well said we really appreciate your words um and your service to the community and to this board um we will now move on to item G PTA Council remarks uh Mr John this is always the hardest night to follow you guys um I want to start off tonight by congratulating our newly reelected board members trustees Luhan and Murray I want to congratulate trustee
034Murray on a year of service as president on behalf of all ptas in the district and you and tell you that how much we appreciate your continued support and your drive I know that when you started this year you had no idea how sideways this year would go on you and I believe you've done the best job you can do with the tools you've been given we as a parent group can be very very difficult because we want the best for our kids but we also know we need to have the best for our district in order to have the best for our kids this night I I have been coming to school board meetings since 2004 and I have this is my 16th reor and I have watched presidents take incoming presidents take the
035podium as president and watch them have to handle school closures and fiscal emergencies and budget crises I have watched them grow and learn through this and hopefully president Flores you will do the same PTA pledges its support and is looking forward to working with you because we've seen by your support of us also what you care about and we look forward to working with you and hope that uh this year will end for you is well as this year has ended for truste Murray as president and that there will be many successes in the end thank you that concludes my report thank you Mr s uh and also I believe it will be I correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's the first year that we will have a board president a PTA

037positive words about our teachers and about our classified staff and about his his dedication to um remembering the alones who were here before us and how they took care of this land which we have abused um I also want to say that uh in the last year or so we have heard the word Equity used a lot more than ever before and that's something that I'm very happy about because for way too long in this District we've ignored our Eastside schools um and now it's time finally that they're going to get their do um so that's that's something I'm very excited about um I want to thank uh truste Murray for her service I I was privileged to teach two of her kids several years ago many years ago long time ago and uh they're

046thank you very much thank you vice mayor nagales appreciate your sentiments and words I will now like to call um SEL County Board of Education president uh Hector kamacho go ahead president kamacho Hi there thank you so much for the time to speak um I'm going to keep it short as Vice may nales had some really great things to say but uh again congratulations to uh Miss Luhan and Miss Murray for your for your re-election to the U to the board really looking forward to your continued service um particularly the p i I want to thank you for such a great year as board president um I'm very familiar with what it means to be a board president during covid and it is no easy feat um so the your tremendous um Grace and ability
047to manage these meetings um and really make people feel hurt is has just been so uh um reassuring to those of us in the community so I appreciate your service um vice president Richardson so thankful that you've uh heard the call um so I I appreciate you stepping up for that for that position and to uh president Flores congratulations it's a great honor to have you as president of the board as you spoke so eloquently in your words um to have uh representation and Leadership is um Beyond meaningful for all of our students every single one of them to see that we are our district it really values representation and really values the diversity it makes up our community so best of luck to you all um and the county office will continue to partner

049board uh trusty Luhan and um former president and incoming um clerk um Murray and of course to um everybody else stepping up into different roles on the board um is important to share those roles and of course to um bring all of our different voices in diversity of our different ideas and um and thoughts and of course with the diversity of our representation in the community representation representation does matter um for various reasons and I think uh it also speaks to how we Inspire the community to step up and see themselves these roles as well um as we've seen over the past you know years and months and especially with this election nationally um this speaks volumes especially in s County where um we haven't seen representation mirror our community in those ways um but
050I just want to say that um I allow the board on um making these decisions together and moving together in that Spirit um to build because sou city has a lot to offer um from every part of the community um that said I'm looking forward to working with everybody um to make that progress as we move forward in North County and thank you again and especially um to the voices of students and youth in the community who have spoken up uh loudly in this election and of course this year and helping us provide some of that momentum and energy um for our board to work with and of course um as Educators and uh at public officials thank you thank you Mr oap penti um if there is anyone else from the public joining us

052the city school district subcommittee and the county committee on School District uh organization uh to kick this off I just want to add and re restate Who currently serves on what committee uh to remind my colleagues on this on this board uh that uh currently vice president Richardson and I have been serving on the board policies and bylaws committee uh truste Baker and clerk Murray on the city school district uh suon committee and uh trusty Luhan on the county committee on Schoolboard um or organization and I'll open it up for comments or questions from my colleagues president Flores if I may just a reminder the board has um identified as part of our board governance handbook and some agreements about the role of committees the board president and returning member preferably the clerk will sit
053on the city school subcommittee uh the vice president will serve as the alternate and the vice president and another board member will serve on the bylaws committee the other trustee the final trustee will serve on the county committee for district reorganization and any City ad hoc subcommittee so I just wanted to share that those were identified committees that the board has has inserted into their board governance handbook just for your information as you are thinking about which members will serve on which committee thank you very much I appreciate that um context superintendent Moore um so that in following our board guidelines um that would put um myself and Clark Murray on the city school district sub liaison committee is that correct that's correct okay and is there uh anyone who is interested from my colleagues
054I'll open it up with a question uh to serve in the board policies and bylaws committee I would be interested oh go ahead Luhan I I would express interest in serving on by laws I have not served on it and I feel that it's an important role to rotate very well thank you very much since yeah since vice president Richardson has done it two years in a row maybe I you know I I'll step into that position so she won't have to do it again very you want me to do it too but oh yeah you did it for three years I'll leave it up to trusty Richardson whe um I it's in our bylaws as rotation but I think it we could voluntarily rotate she's been there three years but if she would like
055to stand by us um that's up to her as well I I'll volunteer I'll volunteer for whatever's left over in making sure that everyone is representative or or is represented or has a committee that would put perhaps trusty Luhan and trusty Baker on the board bylaws and uh policies committee and if it's okay uh with you uh truste Murray you and I can serve on the city school district subcommittee yes there's also the committee on District reor or County committee on District reorganization that is a hard committee for me to serve on I can actually only attend one meeting a year because I am a district employee so I cannot volunteer for additional responsibilities thank you for that clarification in context trusty Luhan uh vice president Richardson um would you be interested in serving on
056the committee on school on the county committee on school board reorganization uh I I've been happy to serve uh I just wanted to mention that I had enjoyed my two years in the um subcommittee with the bylaws and I learned so much and uh I'm pretty maxed out on that so as a member so I mean I'm I'm just as far as policy goes you're only allowed to serve two years so I'm I'm happy to serve at the county committee on School District organization I certainly appreciate your cander and your honesty very wellcome well happily volunteer for bylaws thank you trusty Baker thank you trusty Luhan and Murray and vice president Richardson uh do I need a motion yes to put these forward please so moved is there a second I'll second thank you very

059she's kind of the glue that holds all of us together and uh and I know as president just in general but as president I really appreciated it so thank you very much I'm proud to be thank you president Mary very well said she is definitely the one that does our roll calls here so we couldn't function without her either thank you Nani very well said uh trusty Richard vice president Richardson oh I wanted to wish everybody uh congratulations on the uh board members who were just reelected uh that was the easiest walk through I've seen in in a while uh after seeing all the other uh the tough races right now that we had to we are witnessing the president even still now is fighting for his seat that he' lost about 50 times already
