Good afternoon, everyone. We are starting our meeting at 5:00, regular board meeting, Thursday, May 14th, 2026. And we will start by establishing quorum. Trustee off the area will be with us shortly. And so now we will start with Trustee Khan. >> I'm here. >> Trustee Gonzalez. >> Here. >> Vice President Smith. >> Here. >> President Jaime. Here. Um and if we can get a motion for the adoption of the agenda with some corrections on action items 7, 8, 9. The attachments have been updated. And on consent agenda item 22, um take the attachment and has also been updated. So can we get um a motion with those updates on the agenda? >> I make a motion to update the agenda. >> Can we get a second? Roll call vote. Trustee Khan. >> I. >> Trustee

Gonzalez. >> I. >> Vice President Smith. >> I. >> President Jaime. I. Motion carried. And now we will be opening it for more public comment. >> Hello, everyone. I am a staff at Cesar Chavez and also a parent. And I will be reading a letter on behalf of myself and one of my colleagues. I writing to you today with a heavy heart to address the recent announcement of the resignation of our principal, Mr. Mercedes. As a as both an educator and a member of the Cesar Chavez Elementary community, I felt it is a vital to share the profound impact this leader has had in our campus and why his departure is such a significant loss to our district. My history with Mr. Mercado began when he was a student teacher in my classroom. Even then,

when he was serving as an assistant principal and coach, his leadership style was unmistakable. I quickly recognized his genuine attention to students' well-being and the deep level of support he provided to his staff in the professional as a man in as education. It is very kind and it is rare to find a leader who is appreciated by all of his their staff, students, and community. Yet, that was exactly the positive environment Mr. Mercado cultivated. It was because of the culture he helped build that I realized that Cesar Chavez was the right place for me. Since joining the staff, he has proven my initial hunch every single day. Mr. Mercado is a knowledgeable, compassionate, and fearless leader. He leads with kindness, empowers his staff, and the commitment to students that is visible in every decision he

makes. And let me express my deep frustration with how the circumstances surrounding this departure are being navigated. I'm here today to ask both Mr. Mercado and the board to reconsider his resignation. Leadership possesses this specific blend of professionalism, experience, and genuine empathy and heart to find and even harder to replace. I hope that there is still a path forward that allows Mr. Mercado to continue his vital work at Cesar Chavez Elementary ensuring our students and staff remain under the guidance of someone who truly cares for their success. Thank you. Anyone else? >> Good evening, President Board members. My name is Juan Diego Gomez and I have been a a parent, a teacher, a student, and a community member of King Middle School here in California. The reason I'm I'm here is also because if we

look at our vision statement and we also look at the protocols and agreements with the board, they don't really match what we're doing or what we're trying to see. And in this case, especially at Cesar Chavez is with our principal leaving. The reason why is if we look at it since the Greenville Unified School District will be a national leader in education. Will be, meaning we're not there yet. But Cesar Chavez has made progress in every area. Tests show he has been recognized. Um we are doing the work. And the reason we're doing the work is because he's our leader. Uh another thing is with uh the protocols that we have is children's interest comes first. So let's leave aside political stuff, anything aside, and let us just focus on our kids. Our their needs

through assessments, through PDs. And Mr. Mercado has done that. The only thing is that I ask is for you guys to really consider and hopefully don't accept his resignation, and we can have him back next year. Thank you. >> Good evening, board. I'm a I'm Silvia, a staff member at Cesar Chavez Elementary School. And my sister is my colleague. So I'm here today to say thank you. As a staff at Cesar Chavez Elementary School, we are here to express our strong support and deep relationship with Principal Edwin Mercado and and the outstanding leadership he brings to our school community. Under Principal Mercado's guidance, our school has achieved impressive academic growth, including the consistent improvement in maintaining strong test scores that reflect effective instructional practices and a deep commitment to student achievement. His focus on academic

excellence has created has created an environment where students are encouraged to reach their full potential and teachers are empowered to provide high-quality instruction for all learners. As a staff, we understand the importance of strong and consistent leadership. We want our school and most importantly our students to continue to grow and thrive. We embrace the principles of The Leader in Me and strive to foster in every child the belief that they can become leaders in whatever they whatever path they choose with us and when they graduate. With Mr. Mercado's guidance and support, The Leader in Me program has had a meaningful and lasting impact on our students and the confidence they demonstrate throughout our community. Principal Mercado has cultivated a positive and supportive environment for staff, students, and families alike. His professionalism, open communication, and his

commitment to collaboration have helped build a school culture rooted in respect, teamwork, and mutual support. Teachers feel valued, staff feels valued, parents feel valued, and students feel encouraged, and we have welcomed our families open-hearted, and everyone feels informed and connected. >> Effective student leadership plays a critical role in student success, and Principal Mercado exemplifies the qualities of an exceptional educational leader. His ability to balance high academic expectations with the compassion and positivity has made a meaningful impact on our entire school community. He guided our school through the unprecedented unprecedented challenge of the global pandemic as well as the recent conversations surrounding the school's namesake while continuing to foster an environment grounded in stability, compassion, and support. We have seen together for positive growth reflected in our California school dashboard, I ready scores, SBAC results, and

at ELPAC performance. Last year we celebrated our highest number of students being classified through successful completion of the ELPAC assessment and growth on the I ready diagnostic. In In In recognition of our school's continued commitment to student success, uh Mr. Mercado received the Bright Spot uh award. Uh We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to express our strong support for Principal Manuel Mercado and the outstanding work he has accomplished under his leadership. His steady professionalism and commitment to create to creating a positive school culture has provided stability and consistency for our students, staff, and families. Mr. Mercado leads with integrity, clear communication, and a student-centered focus that fosters collaboration, accountability, >> Shouldn't be three minutes? >> Shouldn't be two people? >> It's on the timer. >> Three minutes. >> Yeah. >> If there's two of them, that

should be six. >> So, three and three is six minutes? >> No, that was No, we all have timers. It was not six minutes. Uh His steady leadership, professionalism, and commitment to creating a positive school culture has provided stability and consistency for our students, staff, and families. Mr. Mercado leads with integrity, clear communication, and a student-centered focus that fosters collaboration, accountability, and and a continuous growth um across our school community. His ability to support all staff while um maintaining high expectations has contributed greatly to the continued uh progress and success of our school continues to achieve. Thank you for your time and for your consideration. >> Thank you. >> So, good afternoon, board, if I should call you that, and so-called assistant superintendent. We have in this country freedom of speech, right? Right? So, what

happened today? I am a parent of a student at Cesar Chavez. And I was out there because I am upset, disgusted with all of you up here. That you guys can't keep and continue to not retain good staff, principals, teachers, you name it. If we're not kissing, you know what, shoe shining, you don't get the position. Do you understand what I'm saying, Ms. Gonzalez? So, what happened today? I decided to go myself and protest outside Cesar Chavez to show solidarity for Mr. Mercado. Right? Students came out. Parents were there with me. Students wanted to create their own signs to say, "We are with you. We don't understand what's happening." But what happened? That woman right there in green, so-called assistant, otherwise white, never meant decided to come out and threaten me and my husband to

not cause a commotion. The students were upset. And if you tell her that students or staff cried, were you disturbed? It didn't happen. Why go out there and threaten parents, so-called assistant? You can't even look at me when I'm speaking to you. And then you call my husband to not record you in public sidewalk? Learn the rules before you even come and harass parents. And that's the beginning. How long have you been with us? For a year? This corruption needs to end. Three seats are coming up. Diamond, your seat is coming up. Juergen, your seat is coming up. Kong, wake up. Your seat is coming up. We're going to have people run against you. Sylvia, I don't even know what you're doing there. You're just a yes for the rest of the gang. We have

HR person who can't even be competent in her job, who you have to pay consultants to do her job. Money should actually go to teachers, to students. Stop wasting our money, our taxpayer money, our student money on nonsense. The only crime Mercado committed was to decide to apply for superintendent. That was his only target. And look at what you guys are doing. You guys superintendent doesn't work for you. You work for her. And what a shame. What a shame. And I am going to play a video of my children who couldn't be here today because of her harassment. I don't want my children to come and be basically harassed by you, but I am going to play the video and I know I'm almost out of time, but I don't care. I am going to

play the video of students of Cesar Chavez. >> Because he knows that like as an educator, he has to inspire us. And he does inspire us in many ways, in it's in education, and other things. And that's not just right for you guys. It's not just right for other kids who go to Chavez. Without Mr. Mercado, this school is nothing without him. >> That's Africa Torres for your information. Next student. >> My name is Camila Torres, and I was a previous student at Chavez. I was there for almost the longest time, my four years since kindergarten. And I've seen Mr. Mercado become our vice principal and a principal. So, hearing that you would want to take him away is utterly utterly disrespectful for all the kids there. Every kid that goes there is happy when

they see Mr. Mercado. He's inspired everyone. He's inspired everyone to keep pushing for their future. He wants us to have a good future. And to hear that you're taking him away that is just a bad decision for our school. So, as a previous student, I support Mr. Mercado to stay. And to even become a superintendent. >> Camila Torres for your information. Next student. >> My name is Santiago Torres. I am a current senior at King Drew High School. I just wanted to express my frustration towards the decision decision that you guys have made to get rid of Mr. Mercado. Mr. Mercado has been nothing but a great principal towards my younger sisters who have been there at Chavez, and I've been there at Chavez, too. I just find it very unfair that this board is

doing anything in their power to get rid of such a great man and trying to replace him with people that are not fit for the role. >> And there you have it, board. Those are the students that you so-called represent. Get to work. Do your job. Otherwise, you and I will see each other again. >> Hello, uh President Hammond and board members. My name is Bertha Gonzalez, and I'm the principal secretary at Chavez. And I've been here for 42 years working with the district and I'm the vice president of CSEA. I'm going to read a letter from a parent. I am writing as a parent to express my concern regarding the request for Mr. Macallo's resignation as principal. As someone who has watched him grow from assistant principal to interim principal and now principal, I

do not believe this decision is fair or adequately reflects the positive impact he has had on our school community. I have attended board meetings and listened to concerns regarding leadership at other schools including issues involving the principal at Mary Tsukamoto. In comparison, I feel fortunate that my son attends a school where the principal truly takes the time to build meaningful connections with his students and families. As a parent, I have been in Mr. Macallo's office on several occasions and not always for positive reasons. However, every time he has made sure my voice was heard. He has treated me with respect, listened to my concerns, and worked towards solutions that supported my child. What stands out the most to me is that is the care and presence he brings to the school every day. It is

important for students to have a principal who is approachable, involved, and genuinely invested in their well-being and success. That is exactly the kind of leadership Mr. Macallo has shown. I also feel it is unfortunate that I have chosen to remain anonymous out of concern for my own safety and for how speaking out may affect my child in the future. Parents should feel safe making their voices heard without fear of retaliation or negative consequences. Despite these concerns, I still felt it was important to speak out because I believe Mr. Macallo has been a positive influence on our school community. I believe decisions regarding school leadership should take into account the experience and voices of the parents and students who are directly impacted. From my experience, Mr. Mercado has a positive influence on our school community and

I strongly support him remaining as principal. Sincerely, a concerned parent. Anyone else? Hello. >> Um I'm here to speak for Mr. Mercado. Um he's not resigning. They let him go. And I'm here to stand up for him because he's my nephew. And I know that you guys are all corrupt. You at all you guys and Mrs. uh Cortez. >> Damn right. >> him go. >> DAMN RIGHT. >> GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE. MY NAME IS CASSANDRA DUEñAS AND I'm here tonight as a parent for one or many as someone whose child's life has been changed because of the dedication, compassion, and leadership of Principal Mercado. As a parent of a child with disabilities, I know how important it is to have someone in your corner. Someone who truly sees your child, believes in them, and fights for

their success. Principal Mercado has done exactly that for my child. When he walked into those doors, he saw It's Jake. He's like, "Wow, it's Jake. He's going to make a change." And that sticks to him. And for so many others in the community, he has done that for. He has never treated our children like numbers or problems to solve. He takes the time to connect with them personally, to learn their strengths, understand their struggles, and make them feel valued and included. My child feels safe, supported, and encouraged at school because of the environment he has created. What makes Principal Mercado so special is not just his leadership inside the school building, but the way he shows up for our entire community. He's from this community. He listens to parents, he supports teachers, he celebrates our

children, he brings people together. You can see how much he genuinely cares every single day for the families he serves. Having a principal who understands the importance of patience, inclusion, kindness, and advocacy means everything. He always talks about the struggles he had within this district regarding bullying, and he's the only one. Everybody in this in this all these chairs and in this board, he's the only one talking about it. He's the only one that wants to make a change. Those qualities cannot easily be replaced. I understand leadership positions come with challenges, and I know difficult decisions must be sometimes made, but I am asking respectfully and sincerely that you please reconsider accepting his so-called resignation. Leaders like Principal Mercado are rare. The impact he has had on our children, especially those who need extra support,

is lasting and deeply meaningful. He's one of those teachers you will remember forever, one of those leaders you will remember forever. Our kids deserve someone who believes in them the way he does. Our community deserves someone who cares as much as he does. Please listen to the voices of the families, students, and the staff whose whose lives have he has touched. We are not just speaking about a principal, we are speaking about a person who has made a real difference in the lives of our children and our community. Again, he's from this community. He's not an outsider that came from a different town or that lives in a different town or that pretends to care for this community. This is all about the children. These are not about numbers, not about politics, not about who

likes who or who brings whom what. This is about our kids. And this does not end here. >> What's up grown board? My name is Daniel Muñoz. Um I don't know who's up for election, but I know how to do recalls. So, I came here to let the parents know if any of these people want to get recalled, I can help with the paperwork and the process. What you guys are doing is wrong. This happens all over the county. Good principals are let go due to political reasons, personal grudges, or whatever what have you. And I don't It just It doesn't make any sense to me why boards continue to do this all over the county. Right? You get rid of good people. Overwhelming support from the parents, but you guys just don't get it.

The parents are on the top. You guys are on the bottom of that. You're supposed to follow instructions from them. That's what I'm here just to extend my services to anybody in this room that wants to recall anybody that's able to be recalled. And um maybe even help them get ready people against them. Do the right thing. Do your job. Listen to the parents. Thank you for your time. >> Hello. My name is Damaris Lopez. I am a staff member at Cesar Chavez Elementary. And I don't have children. And if I did, I would like to have them in a in a school that is inviting, that is compassionate, that is trustworthy, and that is what is at Cesar Chavez Elementary. Thanks to Emmanuel Magaña. Thanks to his leadership. He has set the boundaries high.

So, when he is being removed, you guys are making the biggest mistake. Because he's amazing. There's children here in this room that love him. And everyone here is deeply moved because actions here today were not made correctly. And I hope that each and every one of you in this board will stop and reflect on what you guys are doing. You guys are making a mistake. I hope you guys figure it out. I want Mr. Magaña. Everyone else does. So, Chavez >> Uh my name is Guadalupe Silva and I'm I'm very moved by all the comments I'm hearing about Mr. Mercado. I've known him for 16 years. He was assistant teacher in Salado school. My son used to go there. I've always liked the way he works. In fact, I was very moved by a comment

my daughter made to me this morning. She told me, "Mom, I really don't want >> And he has a way he has a way of making the children feel welcome and making them feel and making them trust him and he does that same way with Miss Ochoa and other teachers as well. So I unite my voice with all the other comments that I heard today. Because I know it's very difficult for the students just like it's very difficult for my daughter to know that he is leaving. Thank you for your time to say WHAT YOU SAID. >> GOOD AFTERNOON. MY NAME IS EFRAIN LAGUNA. I'M A parent of student from Susan Miller Elementary School. I am here to let you guys know that I'm taking all resignation from Mr. Mercado. He is a honorable uh

person and you should listen to all the parents here present. Um on the kind of work that I do um there's terminations and there's forced resignations. And to me that's what it smells like, a forced resignation. And we're not We're not going to be taking that. >> Nope. >> So, >> Preach, Abraham. >> we're here to stay and listen to all the parents here present. >> My name is Marcela Pantoja. I work at Cesar Chavez. Um on my way coming over here, I brought my grandson with me and he told me, "Grandma, why is Mr. Mercado getting fired?" I told him, "Oh, I don't know. Um well, when he gets us in trouble, um he really does it in a nice way and a calm way. So, I don't know why he's getting fired. That

was just my comment cuz my grandson told me that he's he's um a slow learner but he captures that. That's not right because he was telling us the trouble but he doesn't get like get to my swinging. He does it in a calm way. And he caught he caught that. So, that was just my I just wanted to share that with you guys. THANK YOU. >> HELLO, EVERYBODY. MY NAME IS MS. RACHEL. I am the site leader at Cesar Chavez as well as a parent at Cesar Chavez. Um I'd like to read a quick statement. Mr. Mercado has been an incredible mentor here at Cesar Chavez Elementary. A true example of what it means to lead with integrity. Throughout the nine years that I have been there, he has consistently been a commendable principal who

leads with wisdom, compassion, professionalism. One of the things that stands out most about Mercado is his cool, calm, and collected nature. He has a unique ability to bring peace to any situation and calm entire rooms without even raising his voice. His leadership style commands respect through kindness, patience, and understanding. Whenever I needed help, he had been there. No matter the situation, he made the time to listen, support, and guide those around him. His encouragement and leadership has made a lasting impact on me, both my personality and professionally. Words cannot fully express the love and appreciation and respect I have for him. The impact he has made on this school, the staff, and students will always be deeply valued. And something in my gut tells me this is his home, and I think something is not

okay, and I hope you guys reconsider your decision. >> Hello, my name is Steven Mercado. I am Mr. Mercado's brother. Um so, I've seen my brother work very, very hard. He has been volunteering for this school district ever since he was a teenager, and he has worked his way up. I have seen him spend so many nights, you know, working very hard, educating himself. You know, he always wanted to be more for this community. This is our home. He He a lot. He could have picked any other school. This is the school that he picked because this is his family, this is community. He grew up here. This is where we grew up. And um he didn't need to tell us anything. We could already see what he was going through and what he was

feeling. And we know. My mom's here, my younger brother's here, my sister's here, my parents here, my cousins are here. We know because we can see what he is feeling. So, whatever you guys say, like oh resignation or what, okay, whatever. That's if you What you guys want to call it, that's fine, but we see what he's feeling. We see and we know what it is. Um if you guys want to call it that, that's fine for you guys, but that's We already know the truth. >> Preach it. Louder. >> by someone, my younger brother has inspired me so much. He cares so much about people and his job. And what you guys are doing is very, very wrong. I have never came to any of these meetings before, but this time I'm here because

I'm going to speak and I'm going to defend him from you guys. >> YES. >> I AM GOING TO DEFEND MY BROTHER. We are a part of this community. These other people that you guys that are bringing in, I don't know who they are or why they're here, but they are not here for any good reasons. My brother is here for a GOOD REASON. >> YES. >> GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS ESMERALDA Gonzalez and I am a mother who has her son at Cesar Chavez Elementary School. >> Um My child is a special special needs child and I just wanted to let you know how Mr. Mercado has worked with my son and how he has made him feel. When my son started going to school, he didn't want to go to school. He actually

didn't want to leave the house. But with the help of Mr. Mercado, now he goes to school and he's very happy to go to school and he tells me that he enjoys it and if anything were to happen, he knows he can go and talk to Mr. Mercado. There was a time where he was having some difficulty being able to attend the school. He had to go to the therapist in Monterey County. I want to tell you what the therapist told me the second time that she attended the school to go see my son. She said you were very fortunate. You're very fortunate to have your son here at this school cuz you have Mr. Mercado. And I've been to several other schools. I've been to other schools and I can tell you that Mr.

Mercado is very good. He's very efficient. Uh he's very efficient. He cares a lot. He puts goals to anything he wants to give for a child. I'm here to ask you a favor because I know that several of the parents who are here tonight also have their children in special needs. And they know how difficult it is in the mornings when the child doesn't want to go to school. So, I want to ask all of you today I just wanted to ask you to please not accept his resignation because as you can see there are a lot of us here who want to see him at this school. >> Thank you. >> My name is Katie Stroh. I'm actually a teacher over at Oreja Seca. 13 days of school left. I would love to be

home right now. When I heard about this meeting tonight, I was like, wait, what school is that? I had no idea this was going on except for in October when I was here to be recognized by the board, there was already drama starting with this. And I still didn't know. And the reason I didn't know is because Mr. Mercado is such a gentleman that he is not telling anybody of what's going on with this. He has been so discreet. I still don't know. I still don't know what's going on. I see a lot of people very upset. I will say this, from knowing him, never in any capacity capacity as a director of a school that I've worked at. But knowing him on a personal level and seeing him, he is one of the gentlest

souls. And we are lucky to have him as one of our directors in our schools. We are lucky. It is really hard to get good teachers and good admin here in our little district. And people are leaving. They're going to other places. They all resigning on their own and they're like, I don't want to be a part of a district like this. I've been in this district now for 12 years. There has been so much drama. And we just had so much drama two years ago and I thought it was over and now there's more. And I I'm still baffled and shocked that this is happening to Mr. Mercado. And I'm saying that very carefully, happening to him. This is happening to him. He has no control. He's not even here this evening. He has

his family representing him. He has children representing him. This This is his voice. And for me, I'd love to be home right now. I would love to be home. I'm counting down the days. But I'm like, you know what? I'm staying. I'm going to this meeting tonight. And I did not plan on talking. But I feel very very passionate about this. You are making a mistake. I don't know what the drama is regarding, if it's about the sports in the school. You know, I was even like, is it about this? Is it about What What did he do? This is making us look really really bad. This is making our district look bad. I mean, that's the truth. THIS IS IT MAKES US LOOK BAD BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE GOING TO START finding out about this

if they haven't already, and they're going to rise up because this is the beginning of people going, "What's up with your district? What's going on over there?" You know, drama after drama after drama. And this poor man, one of the gentlest souls I have ever met. And that's the That's the true story. Thank you. >> It's cuz they're having a hard time hearing the back for public comments, so I'm letting them know. Yes, once you hear something, go. >> Good afternoon. I'm going to read something from a student. Hello, my name is Maya Sanchez. I'm a fourth grader. Since her mom already went and spoke, I'm speaking for her. Um I am part of the leadership club, I believe, and I am a leader that's That's thanks to Mr. Mercado mentally, as I call it.

I call him Mr. Mercado way when I find myself stuck, I say what Mr. Mercado does What What would Mr. Mercado do? Today, I want to talk about how amazing Mr. Mercado is as a principal. Mr. Mercado cares so much about all the kids in our school. Every day, he works hard to make sure we are safe, happy, and learning. He always supports the students, teachers, and staff, and he makes our school a better place for everyone. He is listening to us, encourages us, encourages us, and he helps us believe in ourselves. You can tell that he truly loves our school, and he wants the best for every student. He brings kindness, leadership, and support to our school community every single day. Our teachers and staff work hard, too. Mr. Mercado supports them so much.

They can help us succeed. Because of our Because of him, our school feels welcoming and strong. Mr. Mercado is just a principal, he is someone who inspires us and makes us proud to come to this school. We need Mr. Mercado to stay because he means so much to all of us. We want him to stay. Thank you. Me as a parent, I grew up in Greenfield. I My kids are pretty much growing up in Greenfield as well. When I let them know about Mr. They're at a new school at the moment, but letting them know that he was leaving, they were really disappointed and wanted to know why he was leaving. My child just started kindergarten, so I'm back as Season Chavez, and Mr. Mercado has been so helpful cuz my son also receives special

services. He does speech therapy, he does occupational therapy. He has helped me so much to help him get those services. Uh and he will be truly missed if we lose Mr. Mercado. Thank you. >> Um hi, my name is Athena and I'm a proud Greenfield senior accepted into UC Berkeley, University of Washington, and wait listed at New New York University, something really achieved in Greenfield High School. I am here to warn the Greenfield parents that what is happening behind closed doors in Greenfield High School before this toxic culture is carried over into the future generations. This is like the third public comment talking about my district corruption, student neglect, witness intimidation, hostile educational environment, rumor manipulation, whistleblower retaliation, and publicly blaming. I experienced all of them and I am asking this to stop even but

in the upcoming unification toward this district. This teacher promised me and multiple and multiple students and then went back on her word putting my future at risk. When I spoke out, I was given a notice to stay silent. Many students were ready to stand beside me, but they were silenced to They were re-intimidated to stay silent by this teacher. This teacher spread my current situation with other staff to get support against me. This happens each year and the administration covers her up. Student board member of Greenfield was accused falsely of sexual harassment by this teacher and for speaking out and she and this teacher was carried out. I took my complaint to my principal. I followed their word and yet nobody did nothing about my situation. I want to say I am filing a uniform

complaint procedure toward my teacher and school because they have created a culture where students are afraid of speaking out against adult in public. This behavior is completely unacceptable. As a community, we look forward to the unification. This culture This toxic culture in Greenfield district and the key and the key to the district must stop. The community and district I love. The town my parents migrated and built their life for a combined of 50 years and the town that helped me get into UC Berkeley deserves better. I am speaking for you so our students do not get silenced through the new and old administrative. I am asking that if the unification happened for real accountability, real investigation, and a change to happen or else I will make sure this continues into the new district. Thank you.

>> Say the name OF THE TEACHER. SAY THE NAME OF THE TEACHER. Say Montiel. Call it what it is. Okay. >> And uh I'm not good at speeches. I've never done stuff like this before. But um you know, it's it's I'm all over the place with that. I'm just upset. Not only because, you know, I hear all these parents because I saw my son strive and put all his heart and soul to where he's at right now. And I've seen him connect with the parents at school and with the children. Um he's done so much to educate himself. I've seen it and went through it with him. All the education that he's done was to become what he is today. To help his the community, help parents with the kids at school. I've seen him.

I've seen him at the school, how he works. Yes, I'm a Big Man teacher. I've always been there for my kids. Like every parent here that spoke in our name, so touched by all the parents that, you know, are here for him to support him. And it's it's very I don't know, but as a parent, you know, with four boys and one girl, it was very hard raising them. And I I He went through all of that. As a migrant student, he traveled to different schools. He had to cuz his dad had to work over there for the for the produce industry. And uh you're not going to No one else is going to be here, you know, to to say, "Oh, oh, he doesn't know what he's doing." Or he doesn't know what he's

saying. No, you're wrong. You're wrong because I went through it with him. And I saw his put his heart and soul to everything that he's become today. And he's been here for the parents. He's been here for the kids. He grew up in this town. He was a migrant student. Had a hard dad that said, "When you're turn 18, vamos. It's time to go live by yourself and do your own life and everything." And uh he was still going to school. He didn't know how to drive. He didn't didn't have a license, but he wanted to go to Hartnell. I said, "Let's go get in the car." And let's go. I waited for him for hours in Salinas just for him to continue his education. And he did. He continued his education. He graduated from

CSUMB with honors, and he still continued and still continues, you know, to be able to educate himself. He He's known so much people in this community, including parents. He's involved with parents. He's been involved with parents for so long. He knows what his students needs are because he was his student himself going through all what the little kindergartners going through right now. But, you know, he has so much compassion for you know, not only the students, but the parents as well. He connects with them. He puts his time and effort that no one else here saw or sees because I'm the mom and I I'm not going to stand here and lie. No, I don't have a reason to lie because he's not any better than anybody here around here. I'm not saying that or

that he's perfect. He makes He's going to make mistakes. And I'm surprised that if he's has made a mistake, you know, why are you guys you turn the books on him or turn him out. Okay, well, you know, let's just hire someone else then. It's probably better. Looks better. But, you know, I don't know what what is pathetic. It's sad. It's disgusting. >> Say it louder. >> Disgusting. >> Damn right. >> As a parent, when you see your son or your daughter strive for education and that already has a career path and someone just and he accomplishes it with all everything nights at 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning sitting there studying. Son, please, we got to get some sleep. Mom, but I got to finish this this quiz, this term paper. Oh, okay. You

do what you have to do. But, a parent is going to support the son or daughter when they pick they pick a career, not just a not just a job. It's not a job. It's a career. It's It's It's I mean, it's like I I can't even describe it. I I My words don't even want to can't even come out cuz that's how upset I am. And I I had my speech and I knew what I was going to say and but I can't. I feel like I'm just so upset because there's people that don't understand that when your child and your or your son or daughter has already uh has a career and they already know and they dream of what what they want to what they want to do. And then someone, you

know, comes along and just knocks it. I don't know what kids young kids, you know, like my son here. He has a job and a a job. But, if he wants to be someone he wants to go to another step or career. You know, I don't want my other kids to you know, like my son here, Linus. He's Emmanuel's younger brother. He's 16 years old. And uh to think you know why am I going to be law enforcement if one day if someone's going to come and take take you no good, get out. Cuz you don't take the time the time. You guys hire people and you look at their their their education, their background. For what? My son has that education, that background. So, why are you guys telling them he has to go?

He's told me from the very beginning this is was going this way. But, I said no, it it can't because, you know, he's educated." >> Let her finish. >> He said, "You can't because and he knows what he's doing." You know what he's doing? >> SAY IT LOUDER. >> ALL THESE PEOPLE ARE HERE TODAY. THEY COULD BE home watching a movie or going to dinner or whatever, but they're here to support someone >> Continue. >> that is >> Preach. >> that has been here in the community all of his life. >> We care about him. >> Yes. Yes. Let her talk. >> Let her talk. Who is this, the attorney that came late to work today and you're trying to shut the public up? >> Ma'am, this is public comment. Everyone >> I know it

is and you guys can't even keep up with your timer, so get your stuff together and then tell people to be quiet. >> You guys >> public going to ask for for everyone to be calm and collected. I really we really here wanting to hear everyone. So, please let's be mindful and respectful of Is there anyone else? >> Exactly. >> Be respectful, mindful. >> Did you hear that, ma'am with the glasses? >> I rolled your eyes. >> Yes. Ma'am. Ma'am. Oh, you're going to call the cops? You're Oh, did you guys hear that? Record that. They're going to call the cops. >> We have to finish the meeting, please. Finish the meeting, please. >> Do it. Call the cops. Call the cops, attorney. Call the cops. This is what happens TO COMMUNITIES OF PEOPLE OF

COLOR. YOU THREATEN WITH CALLING THE COPS. DO IT. DO. CALL THE COPS. >> We are asking on behalf of the community please let the community members say her comment, please. >> Control Control Control your attorney who can't even do her job. Exactly. Oh, now she's giggling, the little attorney who gets how much? 500 per hour? >> Can we please let our community members say their public comment? I understand there's a lot of emotion. But we really want to hear everyone. Please, and I ask our members here in the dais to also be mindful and respectful for the community and the public and their comments. Thank you. >> Hi, my name is Jessica. I'm Mr. Mercado's cousin. Um Mr. Mercado's cousin, and my family has been a part of this community for a lot of years.

Um I've gone to school here, and um I come to support of my cousin. I know that at one point he worked at Main Street Middle School in Santa Ana, which my husband attended that school, and believe it or not, he changed my husband's life and my brother-in-law's life. Um he has this form of discipline, which is not in a mean way. It's very different, and I just come to support him because I I know that he's made a lot of positive impact for kids in this community, and I just want to ask all of you guys sitting here, what was the most positive impact that you guys have made on the children of this community? Because I know that he's made a lot of positive impact on the kids of this community. And I

think that you guys should think twice about letting him go or about a forced resignation. My family will still be part of this community for many more years to come, and I have cousins that go to this school. I've gone to this school district, and I've gone through a lot of things growing up with teachers, and I have never met a person like Mr. Mercado that works and shows compassion and empathy and that makes the movement that he makes. If you guys let him go, you guys are making the worst mistake possible. There will be a lot of angry parents, a lot of angry staff, and I believe that children will leave that school, and maybe even this district, and teachers will also leave as well. So, please think twice about what you guys are

doing. Thank you. Xavier Zavaleta? >> I would like to speak, please. My name is Breanna, and Mr. Mercado is my cousin. He's like a brother to me. We were all raised together. We are lifelong citizens of Brookfield. My grandparents are from here. It hurts me and it pains me, and I'm shaking right now to see how many angry parents there are, and in support for my cousin, and the children. He has worked so hard, if not for witness of his family, of how hard he has worked to get to where he is today. It is very ridiculous how corrupt this is. To accept a resignation, it is ridiculous. I am beyond disappointed. It's to the point that I don't even have my son go to school here, because I know how bad it is. I

went to school here. My siblings went to school here. And I cannot believe it. I cannot. So, just know Look at how many people are here, all the way to the outside, that are in support of Mr. Mercado. I cannot. That's all I'm going to say. Anyone else? Okay. >> As someone that has been here since kindergarten, Mr. Mercado has always been here for us. He is the kindest, calmest person I've ever met. He He's always there for us. He He gives us anything we need. He is my role model. I aspire to be him. He's never hostile against us, never yelled at any of us. You call it forced retirement? I don't believe a single thing you guys say. >> Preach it. >> THANK YOU. >> WOO! >> OKAY. >> IF YOU GOT THE

GUTS, GET TO GIVE YOUR COMMENTARY. If you want to give your public comment, come in. >> Anyone else? >> I'll speak. >> Okay. >> Hi, my name is Jose Rodriguez and I've been teaching for this district for 11 years. And I have been working at Mary Chapa for the entire time, but I've had the pleasure and honor to work with Mr. Mercado during summer academies, where he was um the principal. I have to say that this is shocking news to me because I never expected that Mr. Mercado would be forced to resign. Um when I worked with him, he was very, very passionate about his job. He, like one of the students just said, he's very compassionate, he's very patient, he's very calm. And he has a lot of leadership skills. He's very organized. He

knows what he's doing. Compared to my district, Mary Chapa, where our union at our school site petitioned to receive signatures from the teachers to vote no confidence in our principal. And yet you guys voted to keep that principal. We got 70% of our teachers to sign the petition, meaning only a few teachers voted for her or refused to sign that petition. Some of them because they were afraid. But we had the majority of signatures from our site. And yet here, Mr. Mercado has a lot of parents, a lot of teachers supporting him. And yet he is being forced to resign. I've been told in the past to trust the system. All right. But how can you trust the system when it doesn't make sense? >> Corruption. >> It doesn't make sense. How do we How

do we force a principal to resign that has these strong leadership skills and yet we keep one who is incompetent in that position? It doesn't make any sense. I don't feel trust for for this process. I don't I don't trust them. What I feel is betrayal. Because I have taught some of your students, some of your children. All right. I have taught some of your children. And so, when I pleaded for your help my my pleas fell on deaf ears. So, if you guys decide not to give Mr. McDowell his job back. This is a message to all parents. Remember these faces. All right. And when it comes to voting, >> Yeah. >> we need to get rid of them because >> Yes. >> because they're bad. >> Yes. >> The people in these positions

have become complacent. Thank you. >> them out. SELL OUT. >> WE ARE CLOSING PUBLIC comment at 6:03. And now Now we will be adjourning to close session at 6:04. Returning from close session and be to report at 7:26. As a reminder, please everyone turn off your cell phones. And if you can, please stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. >> I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> As mentioned, no no report or action taken in close session. And now we are going to open it to public comments and I'd like to remind everybody that it's a 3-minute opportunity for public comments. Do we have any? >> Yes, I can go first.

So, good afternoon again, board. um, we're I'm here as a concerned parent for Cesar Chavez Elementary. Um, I do have my daughter Africa Torres there. This is her last year. She started at Cesar Chavez since obviously kinder and now she's about to promote to Vista Verde. I love Greenfield. This is my community. I am not going to move out of Greenfield. But what I am, my energy level already is at a low. I'm sick and tired of the same corruption happening all the time. All the time. We always have hopes and we get people elected and they don't do nothing for us. They don't. And I could tell who really truthfully cares about what I'm saying because none of you guys want to make eye contact with me. Except you, Alvarez. At least that I

appreciate. It's really a shame. It's a shame. And like I mentioned earlier, being able to be out there at Cesar Chavez to really show Mr. Mercado how supportive we were because we found out I found out because of the gossip cuz district employees talk among each other and you guys all know donde comen. McDonald's. The chisme corre. Right? So you mean today I found out and it's horrible to find out that way that Mr. Mercado, an amazing principal who's prepared, he has his credentials, he worked his way up, he's no longer going to be a part of this amazing community because of you all. Not because he wants to. Let's cut the crap. He's not leaving because oh, he wants to leave. No, you guys are forcing him out. Let's be honest and let's speak

the truth. That is the real truth. Again, I was encouraging him to run to apply for superintendent and I believe and now I feel ashamed that I actually pushed him to do that because that was how he became an easy target for all of you here. You guys didn't want him to be a superintendent. Jurgens, you were everywhere saying even before the application process came out, "Oh, Cortez is going to stay. She's the best one for this position." Shame on you. That is unethical. Unethical. And so, again, I want to remind the three of you, Jaime, Smith, and Kong, you guys are up for re-election. We're tired. I'm tired. But, you know what I'm doing instead of sitting home and complaining? I'm here being loud, being a troublemaker cuz I love to be a troublemaker.

And you know what else? Inspiring the next generation of leaders to run for office because that's what we need. We need them to be the next change. Not just board members. We're going to go after Alva's seat. We're going to go after Mrs. Cortese. And let's call the corruption. HR, hiring her wife? Really? That is disgusting. That is unethical. And you know that, attorney, so come on. Put that in your notes. It's really a shame that you guys are doing that and you have another director who is not credentialed and she's there working, but you're not letting her go. Let's cut the crap and let's get to work and let's end corruption. >> Thank you. >> Hi, I'm Isabella Roblero and I'm here to advocate for my cousin, Mr. Ricardo. And I don't know why

they are saying that they that he resigned, but I don't believe in that. Because they forced him to resign. And he's a wonderful person and he tries so hard to help and educate students that educate students. And look at all these parents and staff advocating for Mr. Ricardo. This is injustice. Once again, I call all you board members that take oath to advocate for us, students, staff, and community to give back Mr. Ricardo's job back. >> WOO! >> GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS NORMA AGUILERA. Today I heard some sad news that really touched my heart. I cannot understand why they are letting a great principal go. He's a person who always speaks from the heart and treats everyone with respect. I have been listening to the comments and asking myself, why am I here today?

I'm here to support Mr. Mercado. I have worked with him for 4 years. He's a respectful leader. And if he ever needs to call to your attention he says he said it in a respectful way so you can understand it um without making you feel uncomfortable. That never happened before to me. I've been having a lot of um bosses that always talk to me like really rude. They don't know how to talk to to their um co-workers. Um I have As a parent I have known Mr. Mercado for many years. He was the teacher of one of my sons who is now 19 years old. He was the best teacher of the my children that they could ever have. If you I'm here to ask you, please do not let him go. Do not accept

his resignation. We need more leaders like him. I don't think he's resigned by himself. When I come here here with a family, he's not he doesn't want to go. I don't think he want to go. And I really need to know why you guys want I don't know who wants him to leave. I I don't know I don't understand. I just heard this news today. But I don't understand. I don't want him to go. We need some leaders like him. Stay in this community. He's from this community. We need him here. We don't want him to leave. >> WOO! >> ANYONE ELSE? >> GOOD EVENING. >> MY NAME IS Josefina Silva. I worked here as a teacher for 30 years and when I started Mr. Maldonado was a student here. Then he became an assistant

principal assistant teacher. Then he worked his way to become a to becoming a teacher, vice principal, and principal. He is from this community. He's a very honorable and very honest man who listens to the community and that's why the community is here. And the community, which I am part of, also stands for him. And we don't want to see him go. He is here. He Our students see themselves in him. And he always treats everybody with respect. And I hope that you respect him enough to tell him, "We need you here in Greenfield." Cuz that is what the community is saying. We want him to stay. He is a good role model for all of our students and for the community. So I hope today you choose to keep him cuz the community wants him

here. >> WOO! >> GOOD EVENING, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD. Um Dr. Robbins, thank you for letting me take a seat here. Any of you I know. Um I'm here for the same reason. Um My head has been going in circles and thinking of one person that has spent his life in Greenfield and also uh he went to school here. We worked side by side as we used to call yard duties, but then somebody said we needed to be changed the name to campus supervisors. It might have been Mr. Smith said, "You guys don't know what you don't work in the jail, so yard duties were jail terms only, so you guys uh are watching kids, making sure that those kids go home safe. Anyway, but Mr. Mercado, um he came a classroom assistant, then he

went back to school, got his teaching credential, and I saw him grow and until he became our principal. I even joked with him. I said, "Mr. Mercado, you know, we work along side shoulder by shoulder by shoulder." And and and I always respected him. I said, "What if I had not and had been a little jerk to you, and now you're my boss, my principal?" And we always had a good laugh. We need him here. Mr. Smith, we need him. Mr. King, are you listening to me? Are you too busy doing something else? I have I mean, I have a great respect for you. I voted for you. You are a CSEA member. We voted for you. We need you to step up and defend our principles that are good people. Not just Mr. Manuel,

but many others. CSEA employees, our teachers, all those people that are good people for our for our community, for our schools, to continue what many teachers that are here, retired administrators, to continue the legacy, and to keep our district up and high in and in in good terms, and a noticias cuz noticias positivas, positive news, not this kind of a sad news that we're letting somebody go. Please. Please, if you guys have not voted, reject the resignation and put him back in Cesar Chavez. That's my school and I hope somebody will continue my legacy, the my years that I spent here. Thank you. Gracias. >> Good evening President Jaime and members of the board and everybody else out here present. Thank you for showing up. Um like I said before, I'm I'm here as I

a part of this community. I'm a senior student. I went through I didn't go to high school here because we didn't have high school back then. But um as as a community member I became a coach, I became a teacher, I've been a supporting teacher, I've been a mentor. I've been a teacher again. And the reason I'm doing that or I did it was because people like Mr. Mercado here an awesome principal. We don't have any issues with them. We're not trying to say he's a vote of no confidence. We actually like what he's doing. We actually have that vision statement. Which if you guys look at it, it says we will be a national leader in educating children high levels of education. Our school continuously has a lead in and the other schools and

it's not because of teachers only, it's because of people like Mr. Mercado. Um another thing that we have and you guys have as a board agreement and protocol uh says student success comes first. Mhm. The board we're um represented considered on our decisions that relate to the best what is best for the students. Not adults. It's for the students. And I can't see anybody else better than to have Mr. Mercado present on our school site. We're pretty tight together. I mean, we have really good rapport among ourselves, among students, among other staff, uh supporting staff. >> Among parents, um the thing about it, this doesn't make sense. And I'll tell you why. All of a sudden today we were called for an emergency staff meeting. To have Mr. Mercado come over and say it's his

choice. It's not his choice to resign. So, stop those lies. Another thing is there was a parent square sent out. Again, saying that he is resigning on his own terms. It's not. You guys need to look really into consideration the basis of his resignation. Another thing is we were told by two people present here from your board or from your um leadership team that he was doing it for personal growth. Man, personal growth? He's taking the same thing a principal in an elementary school. If it was personal growth, he would be taking an assignment as a middle school teacher or a middle school principal or a high school. So, that's not personal growth. Personal growth would have been something else in a different position. And like I said, his roots are here. Claudia, I know

Claudia and Manuel, the parent, the longest. I know the kids. They're good kids. They're good people. They're good family. They're from Greenfield. Screw everybody else from the outside, man. We need people to stay here who are rooted in our environment, in our campuses, in our community. >> Damn right. >> what we need. >> Damn right. >> And you guys have that choice. And you guys have that decision-making. Let's keep the kids that are from here. Because those those are the the people that are going to go beyond and making a difference. THANK YOU. >> WOO! GOOD JOB, MR. RAMIREZ. >> ANYONE ELSE? >> Comentarios públicos para los de allá afuera. Comentarios públicos. >> Okay. Closing. >> Okay. >> Woo! >> Thank you. Thank you. >> Good evening, school board. My name is Aura Silva. at

Cesar E. Chavez. I would just like to reiterate what has been said already. Um the truly heartbreaking thing for me as a staff member are the students coming up to us and asking and for our most important people in our community, our future leaders, the ones we hope that when we are gone from this earth will take over and do good work in our community to be confused about why the person they trust will no longer be there. That's the part that truly saddens my heart. I don't have an answer for them. Um that is for their parents to answer that question for them. Um but that that is what is truly upsetting for me. Thank you. >> WOO! >> HI. HELLO, EVERYONE. UM I'M MARIA ANALOLA NATO. I um I just came here to

speak about Mr. Ricardo. I um I've known him honestly for my whole life. I've known him since I was 8 years old. I am now 20. And it's incredible how long he's been in Cesar Chavez. I remember him being a really good teacher. I never had him sadly, but I remember having friends, having cousins who always would always tell me like saying like oh, we're going to Mr. Mercado's class, like it's so fun. I wish I was in his class. I remember him being a very nice teacher, very well put. And now seeing him as a principal, I mean, now that he's resigning, when I heard that, matter of fact, I didn't even hear I heard it from Yael's Yael's Nayeli's line. I mean, come on, like I feel like that should be told with

everyone. I mean, he's a he's a principal, like come on now, like it's he's I feel like he's just um he should that should be told with the whole community because like you guys heard right now, with everyone saying that that the kids are very sad that he's leaving, the parents, I mean, the parents then the kids, sorry, the kids are the most important things right here. And honestly, if the kids are asking why is he leaving, if they're the ones sad that that he's leaving, you guys should take that into consideration because the kids are the most important thing right here. And it seems that you guys aren't doing that. Um and just seems like oh, you guys are just I don't know, picking and choosing, you know, like come on now. Um but

I just wish you guys could join join get together and I guess vote to keep him because the most important thing is for the kids and the kids love him. And that's all I have TO SAY. >> HELLO AGAIN. MY NAME IS VANESSA MENDEZ AND I have been working in this district for 19 years now. And I've gone through different administrators and I want to say that Mr. Mercado has been one of the best. Today we did have students asking what's going on with our principal. We had children part with supporting Mr. Magaña. He's worked above with your wife, with your child. And yet, we are having a constructive Let's call it constructive dismissal. Not missing diction, constructive dismissal. And the way that it was and brought about the staff, we didn't even know until

we saw it on the board. You didn't even acknowledge us as the staff members. Had the dignity to tell us. >> Preach it, Ms. Dominguez. >> I am very upset with each and one of you. And I hope you do a better job. THANK YOU. >> WOO! WOO! >> ONE IS COMING. BYE, NURBY. ARE YOU GOING? >> WOO! >> WHAT I WANT TO SAY IS I'M GOING TO >> PLEASE STATE YOUR name for the record. >> I'm here to stand today because >> Uh let me clarify anything. >> My mom and daughter told me to speak, so I'm here. And their son So that's why I'm here to comment. And thinking >> The issue was the children displaying >> My daughter was sick. Was in the school. Um so that's why I'm here to support.

That's all. >> WOO! >> THANK YOU. >> PUBLIC COMMENT, PUBLIC COMMENT, anybody else? Public comment, public comment. Okay. Closing public comment. And so now we are going to move on to our feature presentation from the technology department. We want Mr. Mercado, everyone. You are all corrupted. >> Do the right thing. >> But we're going for your seats. Attorney, watch out, you're losing your job. >> We will get louder. Oh, will. >> I mean, I will ask him to resign in a heartbeat. So, I we can go very high. Let's not go there cuz we'll make a lot of other ones resign that should. Do the right thing. >> They need to do the right thing because when they ask him to resign They need to do the right thing for holding everybody else. We're not

going to be quiet anymore. They think that we moved on. We're not afraid anymore. They have not They're all going to have to go. We'll make all of them resign. Because everybody and everything The other principals resign in a heartbeat. He was labeled And it also saves the time of if I ship these computers out sometimes it takes a couple of weeks to get my devices back and that's time that our students don't have their device available for them to use so we're able to turn around the devices quickly as long as we have our parts in stock then within a day or two they should have their devices back. And we also have loaners for that while we're completing those those repairs as well. Uh the team also completes a lot of larger projects

over the summer as far as installations go as well so for some of our networking equipment we go ahead and complete those upgrades during the summer. We had a large upgrade where we removed all projectors from the classrooms and we replaced them with interactive panels and that was also a project that the team internally completed so we replaced over 120 displays that year. It was a busy summer but we really really enjoyed it and it was a big cost saving as well rather than hiring someone out to come in and do that work for us. So we're really proud of the team and all the work that they do. It gives us a lot of our staff and our students as well. I just wanted to talk about the role of technology a little bit

as well. I know that the role for technology in school districts has shifted over the years. I always use the example I remember when I was young we had one computer in the classroom and the computer was in the corner and it was used for ordering trials or in recess or something during free time so it's not that way anymore. Now we actually have devices one-to-one for all of our students so all of our students have a brand new device that they can use. But one thing that I always like to remember is that technology is a tool. It's not there to replace a teacher, it's not there to replace anything but rather to enhance that experience and to facilitate learning for our students and to facilitate facilitate teaching for our teachers as well. Our

team works really closely with our educational services team so we're involved in the LCAP process and one of the LCAP goals that we're involved in, is culture. So, for culture, uh goal 1.7 talks about 21st century classroom, which is something that we take very seriously and that we also work hard to accomplish. As we mentioned earlier, we were installing displays for our teachers. One of the reasons why we went this path with the interactive panel rather than using projectors was that we tested it with a couple of teachers and we got positive feedback and then we decided to make that shift. The reason being was that projectors were a lot more expensive to maintain because of light filters. We solved that within 6 months or so. Light bulbs would also go dim within 6 months.

So, it just wasn't really cost efficient and it didn't help for our students to be able to physically see everything from the classroom. So, we decided to make that shift that year and move over to these interactive displays. And something that's unheard of that we were able to get because of moving in this direction was an 8-year warranty that they provided for us for all of these devices. Well, there are basically some electronics that goes wrong with them for 8 years. So, it's great. We have displays that will work for our teachers and our students for at least that amount of time and then we can upgrade once that time comes as well. We also believe that equitable access to network connectivity is really important for culture that where students all feel connected and involved

and they all are they're able to complete their homework assignments no matter where they're at. They're working in the classroom, they have a stable network connection that will allow them to do so. And if they go home and they don't have internet access at home, then we do have hotspots that we provide for those families in order for them to remain connected and also have access to be able to complete their homework assignments. We also know I used to like sitting in the back of the classroom when I was younger and it's not always the best place if you want to hear everything what the teacher is telling you. But, we do have these auditory assistant devices that will allow students even in the back back of the classroom to be be to hear everything

that they're listening to. They have their microphone and all of the teachers were able to either put it around their neck as I'm doing this or they could also hold it up the way that I'm doing now, and that helps the students be able to hear everything, not lose any of that learning that that teacher is focusing on for them. We also regularly upgrade our paging systems and surveillance systems as well. So, our camera systems that we have throughout the entire district, every year we add a couple more cameras. We also upgrade them to newer cameras, higher definition, uh a lot of features that these cameras have that also help promote that culture that we have on campus, and ensure that everyone feels safe and secure when they come when they come to school. And

the last one is a sustainable device upgrade. Uh we know it's not good for culture if a student feels that their device does not work properly and doesn't serve the purpose that it's there uh to serve. So, for that reason we created a 5-year plan in which 5 years is about the uh longevity or the life of a device. So, every 5 years we upgrade that device for that student. So, um every year we do two grade levels that we upgrade, and we do that district-wide as well to ensure that all of our students have access to good functioning devices, and they feel supported in that sense as well. And that goes for teachers as well. So, teacher devices also get upgraded on that same schedule to make sure that everyone feels supported and everyone

feels uh that they have the tools that they need to be successful. Now, going on to LCAP goal number two, focusing on academics, and that's 2.7 for us, which is technological advancement. And we know that technology changes every day, and it's constantly adapting, constantly adjusting, and we want our students to feel that they have the tools that they need to be successful. Not only while they're here with us at GUSD, but when they decide to go to high school, to go to college, to get a job in the future, we want them to have those tools uh in order to be successful in whatever career career path they choose. So, we do have 3D printers that were purchased for our students to use and we can actually see that in the top uh left-hand corner,

a project that one of our kiddos was working on uh during our tech club. And uh they were creating uh festival gears that they were then able to use in the classroom and uh they were able to take it to their teachers to be able to use them uh there as well. Um this is one of the projects that we worked on, but there's infinite amounts of 3D projects that the students work on regularly. So, they're able to design the item that they want to print and then they're also able to to print it and learn how to load everything up. So, the kids really enjoy it and they they have a good time uh working on these projects. The other one is VR headsets. So, we do have these district-wide as well. Every grade

level at the elementary schools has one that they share. At East Valley, we have three carts that have 30 VR headsets each and they're able to use these primarily in the history classes and uh the science classes. And it's really great because I know when I was younger it wasn't always easy for parents to be able to take a long trip out and take a student to a location that would be somewhere in Europe that they've never been to. Uh with this these VR headsets, they have the opportunity to do that while the teacher them we have we have policy where they could be looking at all the different images, walk around, feel like they're really there. So, that's that's really awesome for all those students to be able to experience that as well. We

also have our uh Lu Interactive that our PE teachers use regularly in the classroom. Uh this device uh teaches students math skills as well as problem-solving skills while maintaining an active So, they're moving around throwing balls at the screen and doing different things and the kids really have a great time and they have a PE teacher also have a great time with them and they're also able to to learn this stuff. We have two e-sports labs, one at Mary Chapa and one at East Valley. And uh during these sessions, uh the students are able to not only play games, but also learn about practical applications of game development while they're there with the teacher and also with the uh technician. So, there's different lesson plans that are tailored specifically to gaming that our students really

enjoy that they're able to benefit from on a on a daily basis. At the elementary school, our e-sports lab is used as a PBIS incentive, but also used as part of the tech club. So, our students are able to work with the tech technician there, Amary Chapa, and be a part of this technology club. There we also have a drone club and the kiddos are able to fly different drones around. And not only fly them, but they actually have launch pads and they have obstacles that they're able to fly around. So, they're able to learn those piloting skills while at the same time learn different applications of how drones are being used in the world out there today. So, that's another skill that will teach that they'll be able to benefit from in the future

when they're looking for for employment. And lastly, our technology club at Vista Verde, we work together with our students once a month to do technology checks. So, we look at the pictures we have that's run by Mr. Backen and Mr. Bedwell. And then we also have right here on the right-hand side, our students can scanning their QR code for the Excel sheet that they're going to be using to report any damages that they find in the classroom. So, that helps us a lot because we get an inventory of what we need to order as far as parts go. And that also allows us to know what classroom we need to repair or maybe what we need to talk to that student or that teacher about as far as any damages that happen in the classroom.

So, the kiddos really enjoy it as well. They love to walk around and ask everyone to pull out their device, pull out your charger, show us everything and they they really enjoy it. So, And for next year, we are hoping to expand or actually we are expanding our technology club to include Chromebook repairs. So, our students are going to be actually hands-on learning how to repair a Chromebook, taking off keyboards, popping off screens, and that's a good life skill for them to learn as well for the future. And El Capitan 3 we have a tie for El Capitan 3 in regards to community we do work closely with our business department ensuring that our Parent Square website and the portal is up and running efficiently. We create all the groups in there, we do all

the syncing with our SIS. We work closely with our base team making sure that they have everything we need to communicate with families. We also work on our websites so that's something that our technicians work with our liaisons to make sure that all our websites are up to date and we bring some access to all the information that we need as well. And we also collaborate for presentations. We had a parent cafe where we talked about responsible devices and how parents can help us with that at home and also with their students once they get on campus. They can be responsible with their charging, cleaning it and making sure that they're not damaging the device. So it's it's great being able to collaborate and being able to engage with the community as well. And briefly

I'll just talk about network infrastructure. That's something that is it's a big project all the time every year. Something that we work on. We work together with the state to guarantee funding for E-Rate category 1 and E-Rate category 2. So E-Rate category 1 is great because they cover 90% of our expenses for any kind of internet connectivity that we have on campus. We also are able to use that to upgrade our certain access units to more high speeds which is great. It allows us to make sure that we have a stable connection regularly. We did find out for E-Rate category 1 unfortunately we can't choose the provider that we want for an ISP or an internet service provider because we do have to bid it out and we have to go with whoever they decide

that that we get so. But for the most part Spectrum has been fairly reliable. We do run into issues here and there but we make sure they're resolved as soon as possible. And for E-rate category two, uh we received a 50% increase over the last few years, and that covers any kind of networking hardware, so our servers, our data centers, all of our switches, routing, all of that is covered through E-rate category two, which is great. Um they offer us a 600,000 number uh for us to be able to use for all of these updates. We are holding off on year one. We're not This is year one, but we're not spending anything cuz it has to be spent over five years. The reason being is that we are waiting for unification confirmation. If that

does go through, we want to make sure that we have those funds available for any kind of infrastructure upgrades that we need to make either high school or here in order for us to be on the same network and be able to communicate properly. So, we are holding off on that for the time being. Um we also worked on our server uh maintenance and upgrades every year, making sure that those firmwares are up to date, our VMs are up to date, everything's safe, and that no one can hack us or get into our system cuz that's a scary word to throw around. if that happens, so try to be careful with that. Um we did also complete a battery backup upgrade here in the district office, which allows us to stay online for up to

three hours if we ever do lose power. So, that's great because it allows us to maintain our communication platforms and everything for at least that time being in the event of an outage. And we did purchase a portable backup system, which allows us to keep the school site online for the same amount of time, two and a half to three hours, in the event that one of the school sites loses power and and we lose access to our communication platform as well. And then just lastly, firewall monitoring, maintenance, all of that uh we work very closely uh making sure that if we see an attack or anything that is suspicious coming through, that we address it immediately and making sure that we communicate with our staff members that uh to keep an eye out for

any kind of fishing attacks, things like that, to make sure that we don't um become vulnerable in that sense as well. And lastly, for professional development, uh we do work very closely with uh Cisco. So, for our call manager and also for our networking equipment, we provide training internally with our team. So, we're able to help them become more efficient on managing our networks and also doing any kind of troubleshooting. Uh for ArizCom, we do attend uh we attended two sessions this year, which was great. Uh our team at Vista, who works heavily on the master schedule, and needed a little bit more uh training on that. We were able to work together with them and make sure that they received that training. Um and then for myself as well, just for the student information

system, it's a lot. So, it's just uh yeah, definitely a lot that we learned going to that conference as well. We do a lot of cross-training with each other within the team. We meet every Friday. So, every Friday, we talk to each other about anything that maybe we're stuck on, anything that we need help with, and then we're able to to address it at that time. And then also for our tech clubs, just lesson plans, some of our technicians sometimes want a little bit of help with that. So, we work together as a team to be able to create those lesson plans for our kiddos during the tech club meetings. And just next steps and future plans that we have, we want to continue to research and implement sustainable options that are conducive to student

learning, but also finding cost savings, because that's the big thing right now with technology is that everything is going up and it's going up at a really really fast rate. So, we're just trying to negotiate with the different vendors, trying to talk to them, and find the best savings that we can for these devices that we get for all of our staff and students. We also want to continue to research innovative technologies, artificial intelligence. We do use it with some of our students, obviously following the guidelines that we put in place last year, and making sure that we're uh being safe when we're using artificial intelligence. And also continuing our current professional development practice, and looking for areas of growth. There's always something that we can improve on, so we're always looking for that and

just trying to find different ways uh to improve as a team as well. And lastly, maintaining a safe network and classroom environment for our students, because as have before, there are a lot of attacks that keep coming through. Hackers get smarter and smarter. They find different ways to try to get into our system, so just finding ways to make sure that we we stay safe. Any questions? >> First of all, I just wanted to say um thank you for your very amazing presentation. And you know, I would cut my attention. I know you said like you replace like the device every 5 years and for the students. And I know right now is they send us one one device to our students. So, how much do you know more percentage our students are spending in

their um device? >> Um as far as repairs go or per student how much are we spending? >> but um per student. >> It really varies because the price has gone up substantially. We were paying about $260 per device previously, but it's gone up like about 30%. So, the last quote that we got were closer to like 330 something for the device. >> And then especially in the because with this technology, you know, it's like it's not going to last probably 2 years or 3 years, you know, it's you know, moving up and I think sometimes it's just to make business because you know, it crashed that the laptop was not working you know, the Chromebook. So, yeah, it's it is but I I really like that you guys have like um very interesting thing

that um technology club. What grade it's though? It's just for middle school or sixth grade or >> So, that one we have at the elementary school as well. So, we have it at the lower grade levels as well. Right now we get uh third graders through fifth graders that are more interested in it. Um so, that's the age group that we kind of stay around third through eighth grade. >> And I know these days you could have like uh smart printers or they could be doing that. A lot of you know, there's a lot of students for those students to be exposed especially if they don't want to follow a pathway to for your college. But I think they could master a skill to be able to survive and look for for a job you

know, graduating from high school. So, that's good to have the expose the students to that and have hands-on it. At the same time, it's hard because I think we have to have like a balance of the students is spending like an advice because these days they don't socialize or just put too much. So, it could be like 50%, you know. And with AI, you know, artificial intelligence, it's a good and sometimes they're very more smart, you know, they know how to navigate more than than than an adult. >> Our kids are smart. They keep us busy for sure. >> Well, thank you for giving that information presentation and thank you for giving them the hard work that you guys do. >> Anyone else? >> Uh yeah. Uh well, I want to thank personally want to

thank you for for working with me in terms of technical needs and and appreciate your all your efforts to try try to make sure my needs are met. I also commend you on trying to do some backup power for use for the schools and stuff. Uh I think uh you might want to see if there might be some additional grant funding for some of these backup projects because I I know as we we are more dependent on technology and but electricity and things and and I think there's I know in the past there was some but you might want to also look at and see if there's something in the future about even like I said the district office uh was putting in some of what they call the the solar panels or something and

and like that that we have over the schools there is um and you know, try to keep our our systems up there in you know, times when the electricity goes out or bad weather or something. So, thank you. Keep up the good work. >> Anyone else? >> Always working. >> Testing. All right. Thanks. I just wanted to um commend our coordinator. He's doing an amazing job. Um he's very responsible and always whenever any tech issues come, he's there and you know and doing above and beyond. So, I just wanted to give a shout out and um for to you and your team for all that you do every day to make sure that um students are connected. >> Yes, Mr. Juan Jose. Um I just really would like to thank you too for your leadership

as a coordinator here in our district to um continuing offer innovating opportunities for these kids even as far as what you were presenting like having them pull apart keyboards, learn more, get more into depth of the technology and how it works. Um and I have to echo what Associate Superintendent Dr. Alvarez is saying, you and your team are amazing. Um I've gone to different sites and I always see that connection with your staff and the rest of the staff along with the kids. Um so, it's really nice to see that that you guys are just really um a whole team working together to really continue in offering these opportunities for the kids. Who knows? They might be teaching you all something new these young kids because they're so um tech savvy and so um I

think that it had to have started somewhere here and it must have started with you guys as the ones um probably being sometimes for some kids the first ones offering technology devices. So, thank you so much for that and thank you to your team, as well. Anyone else? >> No. >> Okay. Thank you so much. >> And then, I wanted to take a moment to also recognize somebody from our team who is a great employee. Our team's been with the district for 16 years. He's been with the district for 16 years. He's worked in different positions throughout the district, and he joined our team. At first, he was a little bit nervous. He's like, "Oh, you know, like I don't know if I >> I remember. >> I know technology, but I don't know if

I'll be able to." And yeah, through working together with the team, doing cross-training, and he's really come a long way. He's learned a lot about technology, and he's always open to to help out anybody who needs help. Um if you look at his ticket queue, he always has zero tickets cuz he responds within 15 minutes. He's there, and he's there and happy, always with a smile, ready to help. So, I really appreciate Martin and all the hard work that he does. So, we wanted to recognize him this evening, as well, for for everything. >> Congratulations, Martin. From the From the other side, Martin. >> Shout out, um Marcy, for hiring me 16 years ago. She gave me a chance, her and Patty, so shout out to them. And I've been here ever since. >> Congratulations,

Martin. You're probably here because you're a stellar employee, so that's great. As Dean knows, Martin, thank you for everything that you do every day at Caesar and NASA. Your work is amazing, and I it's a testament that you have staff here supporting you. So, thank you. Know that you're appreciated. >> Thank you so much. Okay, so now we will take a 5-minute break for pictures with Montebello. Okay, so we can begin from the break. Do we have a GTA report? No GTA report, okay. Do we have a CSEA report? Okay, do we have a board member report? >> Um I just want to everybody left. I just want to say thank you for everybody everyone coming, parents, and students. And also I want to say happy teacher appreciation. Thank you for the hard work that

everyone does. It's not easy. It's not an easy job. You know, we know the front and the line, but thank you. And it's hard and there's some challenges that we that we've gone through, but we're you know, here to support and work together for the best interest of the students. And then also I just wanted um the word that ASA art teacher and but Boba person was inviting me today. They're going to be doing some performance and then I went last year. But I was like they said it's going to be on Monday. I want 45 and I was oh, I'm sorry, you know, with my commitment to work and hopefully if you if they do one of the I don't know, later I'll be able. But it's really nice to see that you know,

that grant that was getting from the state, you know, getting that so we able to perform because we have a lot of students they they draw, they you know, they want to do music and everything to enrich those students. A lot of our students they have a lot of potential, a lot of talent. You would just need to polish and guide them for that. So, I think we're very you know, lucky to have that and be able to expose that uh the hard work that students work and the teacher, you know, working too, you know, when he didn't have a classroom, so most of the teachers wanted to to that classroom to do their projects and their lessons. It's It's not but that's really nice to to see that. Um and I think I just

wanted to um I didn't have the opportunity to go and see the reclassification, but I heard really good things. I know parent and were a really packed event uh A Vista Verde getting recognized all the all the students that got uh reclassified the hard work that every teacher do every year to be able to move the student forward. So, I really appreciate that and I think now there's going to be a lot of celebration on the month of uh May, you know, um promotions, graduations, you know, all exciting for all those moms with their kids that going to be promoting and graduating. They grow They grow so fast. And we may all Well, I can say myself, but um I really appreciate being uh part of our Greenville growing up in this I used to

remember when it was only the Mary Chapa used to Greenville Elementary and they back I think in 1985 they built um Ok Canyon. That was where my little kids were. So, seeing that how big and grown have been our community. So, I really appreciate it. Thank you and all for classified, you know, thank you for the hard work. You guys are the backbone of district. So, thank you. We really appreciate you know, being there and at the front of the line working because I think classified and teachers they're you know, working hand in hand working hard every day to be able that students learn and have, you know, a safe and um healthy environment to be able to to learn. You know, since that driver coming there picking up the students, since that um secretary

welcoming them, that ladies of the cafeteria going early in the morning. I went one time at 6:00. I think I need to go back. How they were preparing the food and getting ready for the students to be able to to get a meal, so um thank you everyone for the hard work that you guys do every day. So, that's my report. Mr. Khan. >> I'll try to keep it brief. This is a long meeting. I was able to attend um a reclassification ceremony, which was great. Thank you for all those that put it together, because I know it was a lot of hard work and and um I really appreciate your efforts for doing that. Also, I was able to briefly come to the community celebration. That was the last just last week or I

don't know. It just seems like a long time ago, but it was last year again. I got to see some of the um couple of performances and then there was a lot of games and things going on and so it was that was great. Thank you again also for those people that put together. It was It's not an easy job to do that and I think I'll leave with I'll leave with it that, so thank you very much. That's it from my report. >> Thank you. Dr. Gonzalez. >> Um I was able to attend um a site visit with Dr. Cortez to Oak Avenue to um check out the kinder area that was blocked off for so long. And um MLTF was able to get everything done and it looks great and thank you guys

so much. Um I was able to witness the kids outside playing and enjoying and they were rolling around and it was nice to see them to have an area where they could just run and play and it wasn't like they had to maneuver themselves around, so it was great. Um I also was able to see the nursing station. All of that was cleaned up. That's awesome. Thank you so much um for providing those um that area nice and neat for them to go and um use the area. Um I also went to go visit MLK site and it looks great and you guys have cleaned up the office and outside looks amazing. So, thank you guys for keeping that up. I appreciate that. Um I'm looking forward to the senior walk we have coming in

the next couple weeks to see the tears fly from the seniors that are graduating that are going to visit their previous schools that they went to. So, I'm looking forward to that. I'll be attending that um with the seniors and visiting the sites with them. Um and thanks to everybody and all your hard work throughout the year. I know it's a lot and you know, we put a lot of hours and hit our heads against the wall a few times throughout the year, but we're still here and we put one foot in front of the other for the kids. And that's what we're here for. We're here for the kids to make sure that they get everything that they need. So, thank you. That's it for me. >> Thank you, Vice President Smith. >> Yes.

Um yesterday I I was over at Vista where they had a special program. The band was there. Uh they also had a play for acting performances. And in the gym they were showing the science projects and the history projects that they had also done. And it was very impressive, okay? I attended some of the parent cafes. Uh there was a I I also went to the reclassification ceremony which was over at Vista. I was not and I was not able to stay because I was I felt under the weather. I was sick. But I was able to get the program and saw uh how many student of our students promoted uh in more fluent in the English language, which causes our test scores to go up. And this has been constantly increasing every year. So,

I I I want to want to make, you know, cuz this is at all five schools, the wonderful educat- teachers that we have that provide the educational programs for our children to be successful, you know, it's wonderful. Uh at this uh reclassification, they also had some cultural dancing. I I I I I stayed just for a couple of minutes to observe the uh the children doing the dancing, and they were wonderful. Um There was also I attended a meeting here at the district office, which is right across the street, uh which is once a month where all the commun- all the programs, different programs, here in the community that are provided in South County is uh at is it promoted and uh every time there are different people there. So, uh they're learning about it,

you know, the programs that are being provided here, okay, in South County. Um I'm I'm also still supporting the uh the CalKids program, and we're still signing up children. And as of right now, we're we're at $7 million, and we still got 23 million dollars to hand out to to the children that want a free scholarship money. Uh other than that, I can't think of anything else to to pass on. Um I I I do want to say this, you know, uh we had quite a few people here and there was some information that was put out and uh uh I I do want to make this comment that if we administrative that we have here in our school district has the administrative administrative credential, okay? There is no favoritism. It is it's it's being

done according to the procedures. Okay? And uh I do want to say this. When I vote, I vote for the children, I vote for for the employees, then I vote for the parents, and a little and the fourth one is for the city, okay? And it's all this and that. Okay? Um other than that, thank you very much. Denise. >> Thank you, Vice President Smith. And so, um I also was fortunate to attend Excuse me. To a to attend the reclassification um celebration for all the kids throughout our district. Congratulations to all of them. It was very fulfilling and heart fulfilling to see um how many children um reclassified, but more importantly, the the look of um so um eager and proudness that that the parents have. That it was really nice to um, see

that. So, thank you, Director Ramirez, for putting that together along with the rest of your team. And also, I had the opportunity to celebrate also in the May celebration fiesta. I think that's what it's called. In May here at Vista. It was a great turnout. Um, the parents really seemed to enjoy the performances. The students um, really also enjoyed uh, each other and just the event in itself. It was very nice. Um, very nice to have this at like towards the end of the school year and um, very diverse and different, which was nice. This time we got the treat of being able to see the rock band, I believe it was. And um, the cheerleaders. And we had our very own DJ, our student who is our DJ for the the event there at

Vista. Very nice to see that um, the kids are encouraged to um, really perform and bring that out of them um, and really feel like they belong or have a sense of belonging with, you know, being able to showcase their talents. So, great to all the staff for um, really putting this event together. And also, thank you, thank you and a million thank yous to all the teachers for all that they do, especially this month that we celebrated as well as the classified staff. Like Trustee Heredia mentioned that, you know, our classified staff is the backbone. We got to um, attend the classified dinner. It was really nice to see the nominees that we had from our district and really celebrate them as well as the winners. I believe, and please correct me if I'm

wrong, Miss Annabelle was the She was a nominee for the secretary's and then we had Jason as well as a nominee. And I believe that's No, and then um and then Mary Lee and Maricela. We had a few. So, it was really nice to see um that they had that opportunity to to be nominees um for our district and represent. I mean, very well deserved all of them for just their hard work. Something that was really nice to see was Miss Dominguez uh from Vista be the teacher of the year countywide. That was amazing to see that um to see her parents celebrate with her and really just be a testament of the hard work that our our families put in to really offer their kids here in our district the best of the best

as as well as as as staff or the staff. Um because that's what we believe our kids here in Greenville Union School District deserve. Um quality, great teachers, and just experiences that they um will forever take and grow from. So, really thank you thank you to both the teachers, the classified staff, the support staff, the cabinet, everyone. Just thank you so much for all that you do for our students. And I will leave it at that and move on to us associate superintendent Dr. Alvarez. Testing. There we go. So, I am stepping in today um for our superintendent Dr. Laura Combes um and I will be doing the superintendent report for her. To begin, yesterday she got hooded, and today she was able to walk in her graduation. She We are so proud of her

and her accomplishment that she persevered, and she is now a doctor. She really wanted Yeah, let's give her a round of a >> out there. Yes. >> Yes. And she just really wanted the community to know that she doesn't like to miss board meetings, and unfortunately the university is the one who selects the day that they're going to graduate. So with that, you know, she of course needed to be at her graduation today. So she just wants everybody to know that she is here and was very supportive. So congratulations again to her. So we're going to start off with academics. The reclassification ceremony was a very rewarding evening. We had over 169 students that received a medal and their certificate. They were able to pass the L pack with a four and on grade level

in their English language proficiency, and we are so excited that we were able to celebrate with them and their families, and it was just a proud moment for all the sites. We're super excited and waiting. In the next few weeks we're going to be getting the new scores for this year, so we're hopeful that a lot more are going to be able to reclassify. And then again, thank you to Aaron Ramirez for her leadership in organizing the event, and it was very successful, so thank you. Yesterday we had our business celebration of learning, which is the culminating of a beautiful year. There was band performance, then we had student presentations in the library. We had displays, we had digital creations, and we had a hilarious play. It was just a time to uplift all the

hard work that students did throughout the year, and they were very excited, and parents were extremely excited also to partake of that. Here is an enrollment comparison from 24 to 25. We had three less students, and I'm happy to report in 2026 we went up in in our enrollment by 18 students. So, we're currently at 3,333 students. Next we're going to go into El Cap three culture. And this our our special education students had the opportunity to go to a Special Olympics at the Monterey Peninsula College, and it was just a fun event. All the the kids had different activities they that they were able to participate in, and it was really about unity and celebrating them. And I would also like to give out a shout out to our director Christine Vasquez for her

leadership in organizing that event. What day was that event in May? >> May >> 8th >> May 8th, yeah. So it was a lot of students across the county and our students really enjoyed themselves as you can see through the pictures. >> Yes. >> And this week we celebrate our teachers and our classified appreciation. We really want to elevate and shout out for everything that you do every day. It's not just about this week, but it's about every day. The impact that you have on our students and our staff and also with our parents. You are building the future and the commitment that you have for our district. We are very grateful for everything that you do. And so with that, we have 13 days left. You know, and and so we're hoping that, you

know, within these next few weeks that you take some time for yourself and summer is around the corner. So thank you again for everything. And last is community. Um we had our GUSD Fiesta and that was a culminating activity for our district. Our community came together. All departments sponsored games. There was food from our chef. He did an amazing job and I heard great feedback from everyone. And my my shout out to Myra Via Gomez, our face director. Um I heard that it was very well put together and lots to the partnership that they have. So thank you to the lots team and to everybody that participated. And it's just a way to elevate and it it was a fiesta. It was, you know, a time to celebrate and enjoy each other's company. >> Shout

out to whoever brought the snakes. That was you. >> And then we have um our ESL classes. Um they started a few weeks ago. We have 30 parents that have signed up and we have a waiting list, so we know for next year that they've requested that they would like more classes. So we are working on that and it's just amazing to see the first day that the instructor did a little bit of translation and then the next class it was all English. And so as you can see um parents are engaged, learning, and um they also um we got a cart for them and they have their computers um through their learning. So we're hoping to continue this for next year. And so I'd like to thank you and um >> When do they

start the um the ESL classes? >> They're on Tuesdays and Thursdays. >> And uh Tuesdays and and Thursdays are >> In the morning or >> In the evening. Yeah. >> Here at the uh-huh in um community room one. >> From what time to what time? >> It's 6:00 to 8:00. >> 6:00 to 8:30. >> Thank you. Okay. >> So now moving on to action items. Um Any public comment for out-of-state travel? Vis- Vista del Valle 8th grade Washington D.C. New York trip June 8th through June 12th. >> All right. >> Uh my name is Ipolani Lepo. I am a teacher at Vista and I'm here to present to you our very exciting opportunity that I get to give the students every single year, which is their trip to Washington D.C. and New York City. So,

this is a great educational opportunity for our students. I've been doing this for the past 10 years. So many years. And this will be our eighth trip, I believe, because of COVID. So, I'm super excited and every trip is different and I'm so excited for this one cuz I get to share with you all the fun things that we get to do this this year. We travel with WorldStrides. WorldStrides is a travel company, a student travel company. They were founded in 1967. It is the oldest and largest student travel organization. It was founded by a history teacher who wanted to take their students his students to Washington D.C. and then decided to expand that to all over the country. They have discover now programs that provide history, science, and career focused travel for students in

the United States and around the world as well. We have traveled with this company since 2016 and our first trip was only to Washington D.C. and Williamsburg, but once they changed to New York, everyone wanted to go. So. Here's our timeline. So, on March 25th, the final payments were due. I have 27 total participants participants including myself. So, we have seven adults going including Dr. Hernandez because her daughter is going on the trip with me and 19 students. We Sorry, Tuesday, June 2nd, we have our parent meeting. I had to change it from the last time we looked at this to do a parent meeting and final review of the trip and then we leave on June 8th at 2:00 a.m. As you're seeing the slides you can also see some of the past trips

that we've taken. I included all all years of our trips as well, so you can see all the all the pictures. Um, so the cost um for this year's trip was $3,100. Um, the families had an option of paying an extra $249 um to receive a money back guarantee um if they had to cancel at any time. Um, so if they did add that on that insurance onto their um trip, then if they had to cancel uh last minute, then they'll be able to get all their money back. Um, the trip includes everything. It is all-inclusive. Um, round trip uh transportation uh including airfare and bus transfer to the airport um to and from the airport, um hotel accommodations, night chaperones, so the company has our night chaperones that um are in the halls mo-

monitoring from 10:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. So, I don't have to do that. Um, and so they are very very diligent about making sure that everything is quiet and everything is good in the halls um where our students are are staying. Um, it does include accident and health insurance, so if anyone does get sick or hurt, um they are covered with health health insurance on the trip. Um, all meals, um all admission to the museums and monuments, and uh emergency support through WorldStrides. They are very helpful cuz we've had to call them a couple of times. Not for like bad things, it was just flight delays. Um, so For chaperones, we have one chaperone for 15 students, so um on this trip I'm technically um the only chaperone going. Um, but we do have other

adults that are going to be on the trip as well um as paying um travelers. Um, so they'll be able to help as well. Um, our course leader is going to be like our tour guide um and he will he or she will accompany us to all the sites. We have a different one in DC and New York. Um, and then again our night chaperones monitor monitor halls from 10:00 to 5:00. Um, students have um some fundraising options. Um, World Strides does offer what is called the Gift of Education. It's kind of like a GoFundMe um thing where they can um kind of have a link and uh post it to their friends or anything like that and any contributions go straight into their into their account to help pay for the trip. Um, they

also have flag financial assistance where um families who make under $85,000 a year um can qualify and they can get upwards of $500 toward their trip, which is really awesome. Um, we did have a fundraiser in the fall, which was a caramel apple fundraiser in November and December um to help fund their trip as well. Um, we have behavior expectations. All students must sign a contract. Um, it is ultimately up to the parent up to the parents um if the student is able to attend the trip. Again, they were the ones that paid um for the trip um and uh it's really up to them if they want to say, yes, you can go or no. Um, but students will be expected to have exemplary behavior while on the trip. Um, so again, I go

over the code of conduct with them and they also sign a contract. Um, this year we are leaving on June 8th, Monday, June 8th and we come back June 12th. Um, our itinerary usually shares um uh with another school, so we're going to be on a like a combined trip, but we have the same activities that we will be doing with a different school. So, this is a sample itinerary. This is kind of going off of what we've done in the past. Um, on day one, we arrive in Washington, D.C. Um, and that night we eat dinner and then do some walking memorials. Um, so around memorials at the Lincoln, Korean, Vietnam Memorial um that evening. Uh there was one time that we actually landed in Baltimore and we actually got to go to the

Baltimore Harbor, so then that was really cool, like an extra little little sightseeing there. >> Okay. so the next day um we do a White House uh picture stop. Um we do do the Holocaust Memorial Museum. Um we might go to Mount Vernon. We haven't gone um they were doing renovations last year, so we didn't get to go to Mount Vernon last year, but in the past we have. Um and then again some of the other monuments including MLK, FDR, and the Jefferson Memorial. On the third day we go to Arlington and this is one of my favorite spots. Um my grandparents are actually buried in Arlington, so I get to go see and visit their grave um while they do the tour. Um and then uh sometimes we go to the Ford's Theater, um

the National Museum of African-American History and Culture. Um this one's a new one that we've been able to go into, which is really cool. Um and then uh the past couple years we've been able to go to the Twilight Twilight Tattoo, which it takes place on the military base um right next to Arlington. Um on day four and five we travel to New York, so we take a bus to New York. Um we go visit St. Patrick's Cathedral and um Fifth Avenue and Times Square um and Rockefeller Center. Um one year we were able to go up to the top of the Rockefeller Center, which is really cool. They have really good views up there. Um the 9/11 Memorial, Wall Street, Trinity Church um where Alexander Hamilton is buried. Um Central Park and we do

see a Broadway show and this year's Broadway show is Hamilton, so I'm so Um So oh also, we are staying in Times Square this year and I'm so excited. Um so uh in eighth grade they get a lot of this um American history um and it really does come alive for them, so uh being able to see and view primary source documents and where all of these um things took place is really really awesome for them to actually see it in person. Um all of these monuments, the memorials for wars and presidents, um again, kind of experiencing the three branches of government, executive, legislative, and judicial. We do tour the capital and um see the Library of Congress and the um the other There's another one over there. I can't remember. Um but we also

see some of the Smithsonian Institutions, uh historical museum, science museum, all that. Um so uh it's so exciting for them to be able to see all of this in person cuz we don't have it here. We All the history is back east in Washington, D.C. and we don't get to see that in first hand when we're here in California. So, um in 7th and 8th grade language arts, they do also read about the Holocaust. I know they read The Boy in the Striped Pajamas in 7th grade. Um they do uh film or in Manzanar, um Diary of Anne Frank. I know in my classes, I talk about um the history of World War II and um all of that. So, those are some things that make connections to our curriculum in middle school. Again, this

is a very unforgettable adventure for them. Um many of these students have never had the opportunity to travel outside of the state um and this is going to be their first time. I've had many students say that this was their first flight ever um on an airplane. So, yes. Um so, it's very exciting for them. Um it makes learning in 8th grade is comes alive um for them to actually see. Um some statistics are that educational travel makes school more interesting in um eight to 10 eight out of 10 students. Nine out of 10 students who took educational trips um when they were younger say that it the experience helped their education and career. Um I do have former students that I have taken on the trip who always reach out back to me and

say that that that trip was their favorite memory of eighth grade and they want me to take them on other trips as well. Or they do end up taking opportunities to be able to travel other places as well in the future. So that's always something that I hope for them is that they see that they can travel and that that is an opportunity for them when they are older. And then again, to make memories with their friends is again that's one of the most memorable things that they remember at the end of their eighth grade year. So. And Dr. Cortez has gone on the trip with me a couple years ago. And so that is us in front of the Statue of Liberty. >> So cute. >> Yes. Thank you. >> And I just wanted

to say um Thank you for taking that time and doing that field trip. It's not easy organizing and you know being that lead to take those students. And especially because a lot of our students they don't go out a lot. So I think that you know kudos to you and thank you for doing that because you're making that impact in a student's life. And that you remind me you know they call you to another trip. I know one of that you know that movie of the teacher I totally forgot the name of that book the teacher who teach in Long Beach. Remember that? Yeah. Took them to Europe when they were teaching and you're an English teacher. So you guys I think you you have that passion and thank you for all you do. It's

not easy but you know we don't have enough to pay you to pay anything in that because during your summer you rush and I was like staying home and but taking them you know open their eyes and you know abroad. So that's really nice of you taking them and continue doing and doing it for 10 years. So that's that's amazing. So thank you. >> Yes and I also wanted to thank you. My goodness it's been 10 years. So Okay yes and like you said there every every year you go it's a it's a different experience. I mean it's the same items but you have to go with different and then they have and thank you for opening up those eyes of the students that they can achieve, you know, going out there and living new

things and my goodness, that's I just because I fly so much, I just can't imagine the very first time I fly on a plane, you know. Yeah, so All right, thank you. >> Anyone else? Thank you so much. Thank you for all your effort into this great, you know, adventure for the kids and for whoever gets to go because I'm sure some of the chaperones are parents and they've never traveled out. So, thank you for offering and creating these experiences with our students. Okay, so um if we can get a motion for this, it's the next item, correct? >> Now, I'll make a motion, sure. Make a motion for the approve the out-of-state travel Mr. Bernie to speak. Motion this thing on New York trip June 8th to the 12th. >> I'll second that. >>

Okay, roll call vote. Trustee Reda? >> I. >> Trustee Khan? >> I. >> Trustee Gonzalez? >> I. >> Vice President Smith? >> I. >> President Jaime? I, motion carried. And now we're moving on for the Do we have public comment for public hearing proposed adoption of school facilities analysis and the establishment of the level one fee. No public comment, okay. Closing it. Can I get a motion for this action item? >> I'll make the motion. >> Can we get a second? >> I'll second that. >> Okay, roll call vote. Trustee >> I. >> Trustee Khan? >> I. >> Clerk Gonzalez? >> I. >> Vice President Smith? >> I. >> President Jaime? I. Now public comment for resolution number 1221 adopting the 2026 school facilities needs analysis and level one developer fees. Is there any public

comment? Hearing no public comment, can I get a motion? >> I'll make. I'll make a move. >> Can we get a second? >> I'll second that. >> Okay. Trustee Heredia? >> I. >> Clerk Gonzalez? Vice President Smith? >> I. >> President Jaime? I. Motion >> Excuse me, but I said I. >> I am so sorry. Trustee Khan? >> Yes, I said I said I. >> Okay, and then Clerk Gonzalez? >> I. >> Yes, okay. Uh Vice President Smith? >> I. >> President Jaime? I. Motion carried. And now we're on public hearing proposed adoption of school facility needs analysis and the establishment of level two fees. Do we have public comment for that? No, okay. Closing it. Can we please get a motion? >> I'll make a motion. >> Can we get a second? >> I'll

second. >> Okay. Roll call vote. Trustee Heredia? >> I. >> Trustee Clerk? I mean I'm so sorry. Trustee Khan? >> I. >> Clerk Gonzalez? >> I. >> Vice President Smith? >> I. >> President Jaime? I. Motion carried. And now public comment for resolution number 1222 adopting the 2026 school facility needs analysis and level two developer fees. >> I will make that motion to adopt resolution 1222. >> Okay, there was no public comment. So motion made by Trustee Heredia. Can we get a second? >> I'll second that. >> Okay. Trustee Heredia. >> Aye. >> Trustee Khan. >> Aye. >> Clerk Gonzalez. >> Aye. >> Vice President Smith. >> Aye. >> President Jaime, aye. Motion carried. And now moving on. Do we have public comment for public hearing AB 1200 public disclosure of collective bargaining agreement for

GTA? No public comment. Closing it. Can we please get a motion for that? >> I'll make a motion. >> Okay, can we get a second? >> I'll second that. >> Okay. Trustee Heredia. >> Aye. >> Trustee Khan. >> Aye. >> Clerk Gonzalez. >> Aye. >> Vice President Smith. >> Aye. >> President Jaime, aye. Motion carried. Now we can Do we have public comment for public hearing AB 1200 public disclosure of collective bargaining agreement for CSEA? Do we have any public comment? No public comment. Closing it. Can we please get a motion? >> I would like to make a motion for that. >> Can we get a second? >> I'll make a second. >> Okay. Trustee Heredia. >> Aye. >> Trustee Khan. >> Aye. >> Clerk Gonzalez. >> Aye. >> Vice President Smith. >> Aye. >>

President Jaime, aye. Motion carried. Public hearing AB 1200 public disclosure of collective bargaining agreement for management. Do we have public comment for that? No public comment. Closing it. Can we please get a motion? >> I'll make the motion to approve the um the AB 1200 public disclosure for collective bargaining for agreement for all management. >> Can we get a second? >> I'll second that. >> Okay. Trustee Heredia. >> Aye. >> Trustee Khan. >> Aye. >> Clerk Gonzalez. >> Aye. >> Vice President Smith? >> I. >> And President Jaime? I. Now, moving on to consent agenda. >> I Okay, before that, I would I would like to pull out item seven. >> I would like to pull out uh item 24. >> Okay. >> For the sake of transparency, I need to disclose that I'm unable

to participate in the vote on this item due to a conflict of interest arising from a family member's employment. >> Okay. So, what is your question, Trustee De Leon, on number seven? >> On number seven, um my I know when we had our um board workshop for the facilities, um we talked about the leasing of that agreement for the buildings across the street. Across um from here. So, my question is, will will they bring it forward to another um lease that's going to be 5 years and that contract is um 36 years, and I think we have to have more a discussion about that, how we feeling because we were in agreement that we have a space across the street that we could be able to use it, and we could be able to lease

it like a year, or but I'm not thinking doing it 5 years or more than that because that's a lot It's a lot of money when we have the space. And when I went to visit the multi-purpose um room across the street, there's a lot of but they're using it for storage. I see like a lot of stuff they put there in storage, and I don't think it's that if we we would be able to save that money, I think we have the space. So, that's what I'm bringing that because I I was hoping to see a conversation, a discussion, not just bringing it forward. So, Do we have a >> Excuse me, I'm so sorry. >> Are you asking for staff analysis? >> Do we have Yes, thank you, Trustee Cohn. Do we have

staff analysis on that? >> So, I have some information on that. Um our superintendent did uh um did some research and um I know that it was proposed that it go year to year, but um the um they weren't for that. And so, um the law firm um also gave us some information that they wanted to do 15 years, but we ended up going with 5 years. And one of the reasons that we want to um stay with the 5 years is because we're locked in and our rent will just um increase 3% every year versus it now with the contract was for 10 years and it's already expired. And so, um if we don't if we don't have a contract, then then our rent can go up and we're not locked into anything. Um

and then it just gives us 5 years to figure out and make sure that what we're going to do over across the street, that we have time to facilitate that and whatever is decided by the board. >> So, what you're saying is that what the law firm representing the buildings, right? That we're renting. Their counter is that no, they will not do a year to year. >> That is correct. >> And just for correction, so if we do not lock in the 5 years with a 3% rent increase, is that every year the 3% or is it just a one-time and then it stays like that? Do you know? >> I believe that it raises every year at 3%. >> So, rather than having it just be >> It could >> random, then we would

be locked in for 5 years and with the insurance that it would only be a 3% rent increase. Yes. And if we don't take this uh offer, that means that we don't have a contract with them, and then they can potentially when we go back sit and sit at the table to negotiate, they can potentially ask for a higher rent increase than what they are offering right now. >> For the 5 years with 3%. >> Does anybody have any questions? Is that clarifying to you, trustee Lydia? >> Um no, I think we have to have like a discussion when we were talking and thinking last time. So, um for me we'll be able to um pull it out so we could vote separately. And here in the agreement says um if you go back to

the agreement, if you go to the second page, this they say for the period of starting March 20 March 1st, 2026 to February 20 2026. >> Okay. I lost my train of thought. I'm sorry. So, you want to pull it to vote on it separate, correct? Okay. If we wait, by when do we have to do this, like this contract? >> Currently, our contract has already expired. >> Oh. >> Cuz it expired in March, but we have made a payment with what they're giving us. >> Oh, with that 3% agreement. Okay. Instead of what we were paying, which was >> Yes. >> So, I just want the board to understand they're not willing to do a year-to-year. Is that correct? >> That is correct. >> Regardless if we go table it back. >> Correct. >>

So, what suggestion would the board have if they're not willing to table a year-to-year? >> We can't negotiate and bring it >> we didn't have a discussion. We talked about that day when that we had a work workshop and facilities and we talked about it. So, they were supposed to go back and we mentioned that 6 month and let us know. >> But it sounds like they did negotiate. It sounds like that was what It sounds like the district made the attempt to negotiate, but the representatives of the of these people, the owners, it sounds like they're not willing to change their mind. So, the longer we wait, we run the chance then >> If we cancel, then they can raise the price for those the rental and we don't know what what that is

going to come out. I think a 3% is very reasonable because we don't even have a game plan set for >> the land. >> for a Costa Street. >> And that would be hard to do do that with the 5 years. They did want 15 and we said no, we went with the five. >> So, they wanted 15 and they bargained or negotiated with us 5 years. Does anyone else have questions about this? Or comments? >> I think it's reasonable. Because we don't have a game plan for Costa Street. If we had something if we had a game plan set, then we could uh then we would know Okay, we need to make sure that we have offices for our staff to operate. >> Dr. Arganis, do you know how much we were paying before?

>> We were paying like 12 We It's going to go up to 14,000. I don't have all my notes, but I remember we're going to be We're going to be ending paying like >> No, but I'm asking like previously, how much were we paying? >> We were paying like 12 up But we did that contract that >> So, I believe it was close to 10,000 and now it's 12,000. >> Oh, 12? Then, I mean, unfortunately, it did go up, but not exaggerating of what we would have thought to cuz it says here The reason Elementary School District entered into a lease agreement in 2016 for the administrative facilities and following a transfer of property ownership to DHNOH Greenfield LLC. The district is proposing first amendment to extend and update the lease. The amendment formally recognizes

the new lessor, establishes a 15-year term with a 5-year renewal option, and sets the base rate at 12,000. >> That's correct. >> 875 with 8 cents per month beginning March 1st, 2026 with an annual 3% increase and potential market adjustment review in 2031. And also updates notice information while leaving all other terms unchanged. Overall, the amendment ensures long-term facility stability with predictable cost increases with the associated expenses to be incorporated into the district's budget planning. So, if we wait any longer, we're going to run the chance that they're going to increase that agreement because regardless, I guess what I want Trustee Eredia to to know is that even if we come back and we table it, we talk about it, the main issue or challenge for us would be that they are willing to work

with us to have this for 5 year when they wanted 15. We we could potentially, it sounds like, take the chance that they can say, "You know what? I'm going to take this offer off the table and it's either you guys lock in the or you find someone else to go, it sounds like. Because if you're saying that they've already tried arguing and it went to the 5 years. >> They're they're extending our contract 5 years, so it'll be 15 years. >> And to Trustee um Smith's point, there isn't an accurate plan of facilities. And even if there is going to be one within the year, we don't know what we're getting from the state or what money is going to come in for facilities that we would still have to make a plan and

it wouldn't even be that in a year we're going to start building or doing something cuz we we don't know yet, correct? >> Correct. >> I I I want to mention this. If I'm not mistaken, the contract expired what, a couple of months ago? >> March, yeah. >> Okay, so basically, if we say no, they can evict us. And we all have to pack our stuff and and and and move out. Okay? I I say 5 years and and get a game plan going within that 5 get a game so that way within 5 years, let me ask this. If we get the game plan going and we get get the remedy in 3 years, could could we move out? >> With all due respect, President I may we just pull it out and go

by single by single because I asked that communication and I was out asking, you know, that this kind of fire zone. >> Well, that's why we're asking for clarification so you know the information, like the concrete information that um the district is sharing with us. But all in all, that would be my question to you. Are you willing to take the chance that they will remove this offer and then we are left with nothing or with an increase in the rent because that can potentially happen if they are No, because I I understand what you're saying. Of course it would be a great idea or it would be to our benefit that it would be a year-to-year. But that's not going to happen. And so it doesn't sound like these people, this law firm, or

these owners are going to do that. So that's basically it sounds like that's out of the table. So I'm just for clarity, I'm just wanting you to know that. Like if we prolong this, whether we separate this and vote individually, it at the end of the day, if we don't vote on it, we're running that chance that they're not going to give us a year today and they're going to increase the rent and we've already exhausted the contract as of March.
