all the regular meeting to order by reporting in our broadcast of this meeting is being made at the direction of the board which may capture images and sounds of those attending the meeting the world Steve here Brian President Vladimir Kelly yeah and I'm here uh pledge allegiance with some of our students foreign on the agenda and I get a motion to approve the agenda well second all in favor all right all right zero uh Blood session report there is nothing uh to report from quotation superintendently all right I have just a few things one I want to thank you all for coming out and we have our popcorn Queens here fantastic LASD Community Festival that just last Sunday a week ago yesterday um we are all estimating we had close to a thousand community members
show up over the three hours um it was really a great time we were happy to celebrate Las 40th anniversary and it was really fun to see some of the original folks who created the foundation and to learn that they've raised uh more than 80 million dollars for our school district for student programs over that time it's really incredible so that was very fun um and thank you to the school fights who came out um and really provided some fun activities and experiences for kids uh you may or may not know hopefully you know it is Elementary music concert season you have the um schedule in your weekly update so it's always fun I think today was our first one over at Santa an arena perhaps um and they're making their way across the schools
over the next two weeks so I will be trying to get to as many as I can within my schedule but I know they'd love to see you um if you have some time in your schedule uh I am thrilled I've been officially invited to the Los Altos pet parade this Saturday well I don't believe I'm the Grand Marshal I don't know if I'm supposed to be and I didn't get that invite but I didn't get excited um so Ed and I will be at the pen parade on Saturday without our dog Arrow because he he would not fare well but he will be there in spirit with us and we know it's fun we always see students um parading their pets through town um and then wanted to make sure you feel uh confident
that we are on it we've had some leadership announcement changes over the past week we have Mr land moving to his home District in Burlingame we have Mr spinader who is sad to leave Covington but so excited to go over the block and get started as a junior high principal and then Mrs Attell over at Oak is retiring to work in her family business um which is fantastic but we are on it Carrie and Erin and team we are recruiting we're meeting with staff and families to get input and I have no doubt that we will find too very qualified future principles for our district so rest assured we're on it and I think that's it for me right moving on to full presentation vegan okay um I would try really hard to do some
appropriate check things but Marcy may have to help me all of you know um I'm super happy to be here we do need a mascot for our Pet Parade band if you're interested this is McGonagall it always come out as the Viking okay um as most of you've seen is showing times yeah um as many of you know I've been here for a while I've actually never done this before so this is pretty awesome um it is my first Year's principal at Eagan but this is my 23 23rd year as a viking um and in my 23 years I can tell you one thing that is consistent um not just under my tenure but Brenda's and Keith's as well is that Eagan is a place where every student matters and our theme for At least
as long as I'm here is going to be what you see on the screen which is be here be you belong and it has an important meaning for us at Eagan be here for us means be present students and staff take opportunities as they come to learn and to grow and to enjoy the moments because they are only or we are only 13 months to be you identity matters each student matters each staff member matters we all have unique talents interests and dreams and encouraging kids to take healthy risks to be themselves that's really hard at this junior high age belong we're in this together teachers and teachers teachers and students students and students and the entire School community and many of you on the board which is really fabulous work once members of our
community with your own kids so it's kind of uh full circle for me and I appreciate that I see it from other basis and we also encourage kids to help others belong uh this is just a couple of early in the year photos where we try to to do some things to connect kids they're only there for two years and I think it's really important to all of us to make that two years very significant I don't know about most of you but junior high was not my best time and we've uh I think as a staff kind of made it our mission to to do that different just a few more photos that from the very beginning of the year trying to get everybody connected um today I want to share two ways that
our staff is working to make an even better and better every year for kids first is we've done a little bit um with the help of the district a little bit of an electric refresh added a couple um a few new electives and then refreshed or added some things to one of Mr Swenson's that he's going to talk about um as you can see behind me because we're taking up about four rows I've invited some teachers and some students to talk about uh some of the new electives and um they'll come up in a little bit and introduce themselves and and kind of what they're doing here and then the teachers will also introduce themselves we're going to share about strength and conditioning which is a new physical education elective we're going to share about
Robotics and drones Green Thumb ecology and then I'm super excited because I wanted this forever we are going to add an avid section next year um at Eagan to help support kids that are trying to get into Avid at Los Altos High following our new electives then the other Popcorn Lady in this Academy will close out our presentation uh highlighting what we do to support kids as they transition we have a wide variety of transition activities we do at Eagan and uh I think it's important to highlight what those are um in helping these kids go from from six to seven so that's what I got these are my people results [Music] uh Mr Troyer I'm a seventh grade PE teacher at Egan um that's okay so we we are coming up with a strengthened
Conditioning class in order to help students get stronger and faster better prepared for athletics uh even if they're not preparing for a specific sport or athletic Endeavor it's just to get them thinner and stronger and just work on that health so we will be teaching them about the muscles and the different exercises that they are working when doing those exercises they'll come up with a personalized exercise routine then they will actually try and Implement that personalized exercise routine and see if they can actually get stronger or fitter and make changes as they go and Gabriel is one of those who is interested in joining the class and so he's looking forward to it yeah do you have anything to say um I think this will help a lot of students as like they can get
there's a page more of stronger and also mentally because they have to like make themselves determined to keep up with the workouts and all that so effects and multiple points yeah thank you two minutes and the response is I do the stem electives at Eagan and we always talk about updating all of my curriculum might take a lot of surveys from students to help update what we're doing and try and focus more on what their interests are a big thing that we had talked about also if you send Rose getting some drones into the classroom uh so the idea is we're kind of trying to bring project-based learning and challenge-based learning teaching Heights uh with drones you basically add a third dimension of coordination with the programming as well as a little lab for RC
so the idea you're having drones in uh it will again allow them to have a different type of programming to do allow them to kind of think spatial rendering with a an invite involved not just the robot driving around to the ground it also gives way for us to really kind of talk about when we control how RC works in the first place or whatever you're doing with our different frequencies why are they important and then just kind of the physics behind it I always try and bring physics into any any discussion that I can have just kind of start running learning some of the difficult Concepts I know there's a lot of students have been interested in particularly the RC component because right now our robots are all programmed so the Lego robots kind
of have to do their thing based on their code directly giving the RC component I think is a big part too uh just because with a lot of the robotics challenges they have that is an operator controlling the robot in certain Fields so it just kind of will then prepare them a little bit more uh for having that ability when they get to the high school the high school level yeah and just again hopefully trying to just encourage students with the idea of these Electronics can be fun and we can control them and find out how to use them and innovate based on them and I'm really excited about that class I think it's going to be a great addition it'll also be interesting just to see always what the students come up with and
just their abilities always throw the more we challenge them and the challenge based learning so I'm looking forward to that and I'm really excited person certificates hi I'm Julia McFarland I've been teaching on seventh grade science at Eagan for 20 years and I'm really excited about it I recognize a lot of you without worrying to start Green Thumb ecology and it's got four components it's based on things the things we've already done in the past either clubs or teams or actual curriculum so the first component is environmental awareness projects and that's based on a eighth grade Peak project personal environmental awareness project so we're going to use that throughout the year and then we used to have a green team so we're going to beef that up again and the students will have responsibilities with
composting recycling I have a picture there you can barely see the compost bin we have two tumbler composters and a stat composter I just composted all the flowers from last week in the statcom poster and so we we're really trying to beef up the composting because we don't want it ends up in the landfill that's more sea of committee there Garden cultivation so we have a California Native Garden and we want to also work on our vegetable beds fruits flowers vegetables that we can actually consume and then finally the ecology curriculum is going to be tied to our seventh grade science ecosystem but we want to go bigger we want to talk about the local level this has been a dream of mine to talk about what's happening globally to the ecosystem so that's it
hello everyone thank you for having me my name is Jen patino I'm going to be teaching Avid next year I'm very eager and very grateful to have taken on this role if you're not familiar with Avid what it stands for is advancement via individual determination so what I really like about that is that it really puts the onus on the student to motivate themselves to find their best self and it really helps them prepare for several different aspects of Life be that high school at the middle school level college or just career Readiness overall which has multiple benefits to it the avid's mission statement says uh it is to close the achievement Gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global Society so they are clearly trying to motivate all students
who usually primarily come from you know first generation college students to you know students of color these students are are the ones that at times can walk through the cracks so we really try to be really proactive in terms of identifying those student populations and really getting them into that specific area for support some of the types of strategies that we'll be incorporating in Avid are things like Cornell notes you love them where you hate them Democratic seminars which we are implementing in other aspects of of Eagan so I think it's going to really be full circle in that aspect and this concept of wicker which is writing inquiry collaboration organization and reading which kind of works all together and it's kind of a system a process where they come up with an idea they
think through it with support from their peers as well as teachers and tutors to really synthesize and really understand any types of questions that they have regardless of the subject matter so the success kind of speaks for itself Avid students tend to have a higher graduation rate College acceptance rates and enrollments in advanced uh courses if you can see the the data up at the top it says 42 of first generation low-income average college students graduate with a four-year degree within six years comparative to 11 of their peers that match that same criteria uh those non-avid students graduate in the same time period so um Okay Lori was going to talk to you folks about she wasn't able to do admin because this is the first year and she's going to be going to high
school and she's going to tell you kind of her experience with getting into Avid in the high school um so I'm going to be going to Avid when I get into high school and I think that having it in middle school would be really beneficial because it would give more time of like experience to build up to getting like into like colleges and stuff so I think that having it at Eagan and like having two years to like prepare for the next four years that you're going to be in Avid will be really helpful for like a lot of students absolutely thank you Dean is a candy assistant first of all do leadership and Student Activities because I am with the open lifestyle person and the real stars of the show will stand up so
transition activities is something that Connie I've taken seriously for a really long time we've actually worked as a team and done this for many years at Eagan 20 plus something years I forgot um but then when we spent the time to put the apps on the slide it was it was a pleasant surprise to see how much and just reflecting and what all the different things we do so starting with sixth grade parent night there are students and staff that come and usually core teachers for seventh grade are there to answer questions but of course again the stars of the show are always the students and then the parents have an opportunity to talk to them um panels of 7th and 8th graders so that's always a good one and then current seven current Junior
High parents also transition isn't just for students it's for parents as well so we do do a parent panel if I can answer parents or more parental questions for our incoming Junior High kids uh transition means for every sixth grade team so we meet as a team Connie and myself and usually our El teacher and other support psychologists we'll go to the sixth grade teachers at each school and meet as a team and speak about each student and what their needs might be and how we can better prepare or what we can do beforehand to sign up get a get them set before they even set foot on campus um the theater School PTA meetings oh yeah we had a team of eight students show up at the PGA meetings they and well we worked
on a slideshow with them but they did all the presenting and answer questions I think middle schoolers are very competent and it's always great to give them that opportunity to do that sixth grade orientation elective fair is a big one and all of these students that I brought here today um participated in some way um there are four sort of components to that one is so the sixth graders get a feel for what whole school assembly feels like and looks like at Eagan so we start there and then they're broken into groups of 12 to 13 students with our eighth grade leaders and they head out they either on a tour of the campus cookie included very important and then the elected fair then I'm usually part of the elected fair in the City gym
and my sixth graders are there representing all the electives and Milling around and answering questions for the income I think sixth graders that are still trying to figure out what this is all about and what might be their best choices and opportunities for again for them and then lastly we do a classroom experience and this one we added and I really like this one they go in and classroom there is a staff that's Eagan Stuff Plus the eighth graders on the tour and they have another slideshow and a brochure and they get a classroom lesson so that's that's another big one for them then we do another um evening event for our English Learners which was successful starting that this year um scheduled day is a big busy day as you know most of you
it's the Friday before school starts they can pick up their schedule they think they're quite anxious they think it helps with that anxiety being able to see that schedule and walk it through an order and kind of know where you're going and the Big Challenge is to try to get your locker open and that's always the biggest one for that day and then lastly Viking Camp the first three days of school we run a special schedule including advisory and all school events you saw some of the slides to help build that community that sense of belonging and sort of get everybody feeling like it's a great place for them and there's a spot somewhere on our campus for Yale so these guys can you guys stand up so all of my little helpers so I
have three seventh graders and three eighth graders and if we can just talk to what transition is for you I do want to point out our 8th graders didn't have this so remember Covenant also that was a surprise to me I went oh we're still dealing with that and we are so the eighth graders they did the chores but they didn't take part in for themselves so it was really new to them and then the seventh graders did partake in it and also were selected by their elective teachers to represent them and answer questions so Maybe what was their biggest question what was the big of their biggest concerns the sixth graders coming in anybody um he said uh opening the locker star question um as well as uh where to go and where all
the classrooms are um they they were like uh was this which was this classroom uh where is the math classrooms why is there a second story building here on that so how much time you had okay Time's A big one seventh graders what about the elective fair I know the number one question for the electives was that right anything else a lot of the best you go any field trips are there any fun events that happen within the classroom I think that it was mainly just like what do you do because in the elective that I was representing it was a new elective so they weren't really quite sure of what was happening in it double kill she sold it though so we had quite a few that scene a lot a lot of interest
in that game anything about your uh she said everybody what about you because you had a group as well right yeah they did have a lot of questions about the locker rooms like like there was a lot of questions about it they were very scared um so I thought that um the like going into the room and then ask like answering questions for the incoming seventh graders was like really important because they're getting like questions answered by people who've already been there instead of like teachers and stuff so I think that that was really important did it help you you think it helped them so you guys have been on both ends of it what about thought about living out so very much they got um I couldn't get like a mental map of where
I think in school is now they um I'm sure not when they go into 7th grade they won't be as anxious as they were before the whole day that transition day anything else we go okay you guys have any questions for them are there any questions you were amazing thank you to go home and finish your homework yeah I'm so excited that you're doing Avenue yeah junior high so thank you for having them thank you for doing that's amazing thank you um I would like to acknowledge that my friend over there on the end uh Miss Bosco was my partner and um with Sandra Sandra and Carrie were definitely partnered with me in trying to make that happen is something I wanted to do at even for a long time so um there's a whole
group of us that have worked to make that happen thank you all right just moving on to the consent calendar any board members like to provide any comment on the consent calendar nope and I get a motion to recruit and I can set calendar all in favor um zero on to employee requests to address the board Kaylee hello there I'm Kaylee saliers or Miss Kaylee if you're at Santa Rita I'm the therapeutic special day classroom teacher for the district I'm here this evening representing my role as VP and speaking on behalf of Los Altos teachers union if you have ever watched Ted lasso you may know the character Roy Kent who often uses colorful language to express his barely existent emotions and if you've ever seen my classroom in action you've probably heard some colorful
Roy can't verbiage yourselves but we're not here to discuss sailor speech I'm here to talk about a very poignant word that often gives inspiration to the soccer players on the show and that word is believe you see to believe is to have confidence to have faith to have conviction and the reliability of someone or something and as our teachers union accepted their retroactive rate last week we were able to Believe In The Better Together motto we've been using the past several years to highlight the Los Altos Teachers Association teamwork approach with Los Altos School District to believe means we have to meet in the middle to better understand one another to believe means we model working together so the youth we teach sees that our district has our backs while trusting us to guide the
Future Leaders of Tomorrow to believe means we unite in our thinking because as the saying goes two heads are better than one to believe is to take a risk it's to continue hoping and to show that witch or that who you are believing in is worth it so thank you LASD board for showing us with our race and with our members that we are worth believing in by the way on a personal level I'd like to make sure you have an exclusive invitation to the tsdc Santa Rita open house room 27 on May 26 at 5 45. expect a calendar invite in your emails tomorrow thank you all right uh do we have anybody here to speak for California School Employees associate are you going to be speaking I know okay okay all right um
getting on to community comments before I get to that to provide public comment on an agenda item speaker cards are to be submitted to the superintendent um student cards will not be accepted once a public comment begins your name will be announced when it is your turn to speak do we have anybody here for Community comments this time it's reserved for members of the public and employees to address the board on items that are not on the agenda the board is not permitted to discuss or take action on non-agenda items except to instruct the superintendent to review the matter further report back to the board at a subsequent meeting or place the matter on a future agenda the board may take a brief comment or ask clarifying questions do we have any speaker cards yeah
all right moving on to action discussion item non-representative employee confirmation alrighty so uh you have a lot of attachments to agenda item number one tonight I'm sorry I think there's some confusion in the audience there are people who want to speak on yes filling out a speaker card really quick and turning it into question sorry I think it'd be worse yeah thank you because all right once the public comment has begun we don't take any more speaker cards so any more no all right um actually our first one passed in was Max you can uh you can come up and then it will be uh Eugene mandal and Jay Park and then David gold a time limit of three minutes sorry good evening everyone my name is some of the parents of the upcoming kindergarten
class at probably first of all I would like to thank the Lord and the superintendent uh for getting back to us and for your public service more specifically thank you to the superintendent for providing us with a historical kindergarten data that we appreciate your efforts to keep us informed uh however we would like to express our continued concern about the large class size for kindergarten adult school as well as other schools within the district why we understand that the registration numbers are fluid and may change throughout the summer we believe it is important to consider the benefits of the smaller class sizes and the challenges of managing a large kindergarten class but we also appreciate the superintendent's reassurance about the ability of the teachers to address and handle the large kindergarten class however we firmly
believe that our amazing teacher would do an even better job with a smaller classroom size given the information provided by the Supreme attendant and that has one potential solution to this issue we would like to suggest that the district provides more flexibility for transfer between the students within the districts and allows resigning some of the students in schools with larger kindergarten classes to other schools within the district with smaller classes as an example instead of having two kindergarten classes at Covington and one at Oak each with 25 students they can have two kindergarten two classes at Covington and two and so each with a more manageable number of students between 18 and 19. thank you for attention to this matter we appreciate your dedication to providing an excellent education to all the students in the
district thank you we have Eugene Handel it is a similar comment okay thank you JT Young Park and we think that um the smaller class scientists would benefit um a young kids for their learning especially social emotional um so yeah we are here to express our concern thank you consideration thank you so much and uh David Bowen uh next year for kindergarten um we also just wanted to express similarly uh some concern about class sizes especially you know knowing uh knowing the experience of my son and uh and many of the the kids his age there's a lot that's going to be happening here that means kindergarten next year it's a uh gonna be quite a shock I think for the uh to have such a large class size and I know uh it makes
a big difference when uh for for him when uh he has a stronger personal relationships with the teachers that he's been working with and so on uh so I I'm hoping that there's a way to uh to see uh kind of smaller simply class sizes where teachers are able to interact more directly with a smaller number of students as time goes on I know those all sorts of end screens around uh around uh enrollment and so on uh but to the extent that it can be balanced out I think it would be much appreciated thanks thank you um like I said sorry we do not because it's not the on the agenda we do not discuss the item we could there I do have a we can talk to her um how many teachers are
there in the Kinder classroom for most of the day two three for uh every Kinder classroom has a full-time teacher and then we have a kindergarten aide who works I believe medical six hours nine to one okay Elena has the answer yes yeah four hours um and our class sizes for were TK through three what is what are they generally what do they generally uh up to 25 has been our working number as long as I've been in the district and each year the enrollment at every school changes so the I shared with you the same enrollment information that I shared with um the oak families and so we've had classes that range from 16 to 25 just depends on the particular enrollment by school by year and why why have we actually had the
numbers so low over the past couple years well we have a slightly declining enrollment we have fewer uh families with young kindergarten age students and really it just I'm sure there's a variety of reasons any other kind of funny questions on that all right thank you thank you moving on to action discussion items non-represented employee compensation all right take two yeah uh so tonight with your uh many attachments you will see information regarding the financial implication for our non-represented groups it is our district practice that they receive a me too similar or not similar exactly the same as what are the bargaining units have have bargained for so that includes a six percent this year retroactive to the start of the year and six percent next year this includes um three main groups so you
saw the salary schedules for this current year and for next year of the confidential groups um there were two slight adjustments within that group of confidentials one for the administrative secretary and one for executive assistant it also includes the classified Management Group and the certificate did Management Group and that also has one slight adjustment for the certificated director position everything is laid out there for you to have reviewed we were positively certified by um the county and it's been built into our nyp that you've been seeing for the last um all three cycles of this thank you um anybody have clarifying questions from anybody in board member have comments can I get a motion to approve the non-representative employee compensation a second all in favor moving on to budget Review Committee updates so good evening
uh tonight I just want to go over a budget Review Committee uh the process and some of the outcomes as a result of that and talk a little bit about um sort of recommendations for next year's adopted budget which we're in the middle of doing uh for these days or repeating time so uh there's a there's a need for some necessary reductions in efficiency and there's a couple reasons for that the first one is really the slowing economy we know property tax growth has been uh you know outstanding the last several years but with the rising inflation uh and the Federal Reserve just last week they raised the federal uh funds rate and their quarter basis points so we know we're seeing a contraction uh a b growth will not be as great as you
have been in the last several years our increased costs we're still seeing a lot of inflationary pressures on prices that's prices for folks and supplies contracted Services many things just buying gasoline for the maintenance Vehicles all those things cost a lot more money than they have in the past and and the one uh thing and you heard Miss Kaylee let is really our employees uh to me you could remain competitive in this in the Bay Area uh the salary increases that were much needed for our employee groups uh as we kind of review the budget those are some big big factors that we're looking at so also uh need to right side Staffing during covid we hired a lot of additional Staffing and we used one-time covid fund for those but as our enrollment really
didn't bounce back as expected after covid our enrollment has declined a little bit so we really have to what we use the terminal I think I like Sandra's term called right size Staffing we need to get our staffing kind of to match our current enrollment and so there's some staffing reduction that will be recommended but that's a big driver of our cost is Staffing so if you can get our staffing right sides that will help reduce the cost for sure in the next year in the future years as well some needed reductions for the next uh fiscal year for 23-24 is uh we identified about 2.8 million in reductor that we could identify and those would be ongoing reductions and in the out years uh 24 25 uh 4.3 million dollars of ongoing reductions and
then the goal is to maintain strong programs and services to students and also restored reserved eight to ten percent we're trying our best to um have these reductions not affect kids in classrooms so a lot of reductions are things that could be outside the classroom and that's really our key goal but we don't want to impact the strong programs that we already have so we're trying to make some of those reduction outside the classroom some key process for identifying reductions the budget Review Committee is an inclusive group of members we have members of Lata cscas on the group we have some sitting board members we have cacf and and people on our staff members are representing and it was a great uh time of brainstorming coming up with ideas uh this is not the first
time the budget Review Committee has had to meet and talk about we've uh reductions and efficiencies so it was really a nice way to get everybody together we did a lot of brainstorming and we put Post-its on things that are Staffing and non-staffing and how do we how do we put those together uh ERC created a very large list we came back and we started crunching the numbers and identifying some actual numbers and how would these impact our budget for the upcoming year the executive cabinet we immune the list consider the cost of the pros and cons uh the cost benefit of doing some of the reductions and we came up a list that we built was doable in the year in the upcoming budget year and then we met again to review the recommendations
with BRC and provide input the BRC also or one of our key uh Community groups and they met and Kerry did a great job sharing the lcap we did some lcat brainstorming with with the BRC which is part of the getting stakeholder input that was actually a great process of uh for part of our L Capital you'll be hearing about in June and to important meeting so these are the anticipated reduction to deficiencies of 2.8 billion and a lot of the Staffing uh uh reducing some classified additions uh we did two lbn's all the recommendations are going to be through attrition so attrition is when you have somebody retire or they move out of the area and they've left we will not back to that position so that's a great way to capture savings and
not have to do fourth layoffs uh we have one custodian whose lapsed so we will backfill that position uh internally same thing with the technology specialist bet or the behavioral therapist and then certificated positions and these are teachers who have left or they're not they're not coming back next year some of them have moved or retired and so that's going to capture some of the savings um at our budget adoption we'll be talking a little bit about some of the upcoming programs from the state of California and we're going to get some prop 28 Mining and some of the reassigning of staff to restricted funds helps our unrestricted balance so those are some things we're working on and then non-staffing uh the technology refresh budget we felt we could reduce it by 200 000 a
year we're going to be meeting with Val later this week our technology director to talk about finalizing that and then he can order the necessary Chromebooks and MacBook Pros for next year so then we have our normal refresh going on but just a little bit smaller for this next year books and supplies by over a hundred thousand uh check contracted Services would be approved at previous board meeting reducing the services down a little bit and then Safety Services we build there's some other uh things that we can do that still offer the services and mental health services for our staff but maybe a little bit lower cost and then contracted Services overall that includes maintenance and operation Services by about 300 000 so all of these things are very important as we're right in the
middle budget adoption cycle uh we'll be coming back to the board uh for public hearing on June 5th to talk about the budget and the lcap at the same time but thank you to the budget Review Committee Vladimir Brian are on that committee so thank you for your input um super critical to get experienced people who've gone through this before a new newer to the district and so it's great to have good feedback and expertise on the board so thank you for being there and then these all these reductions and efficiencies uh will be implemented in our 23-24 adoption budget for next year all right so open any questions for tonight anybody have any questions yeah on your previous slide um and just to confirm for everybody in the non-staffing category the reductions that we're
making there do not negatively impact our Academic Program no they do not we feel about that because I see books and supplies and that might look a little concerning the books so and then so yeah so could you just speak a little bit about sure so some of the books and supplies for example custodial supplies um you know meets and operation supplies those all can have supplies budget and we try not to do we do have some restricted Lottery funds that are like technology or not technology I should say for like textbooks and and those type of educational supplies so we're going to try to limit those type of purchases mostly non-classroom supplies and then the other question um um I'm sorry about the technology exactly yeah I'm just it's kind of a general question
yeah the academic program yeah we're going to try to limit uh anytime we make reductions we always be mindful of the educational program so we try to have very little impact in going outside the classroom any more questions um looking at this um and also hearing from the parents earlier and sort of reviewing the enrollment data one of the things that has been on my mind over the last few years that our enrollment has contracted and as we think about the long term yes I think that's our responsibility of the board is being concerned that we don't sort of back ourselves into a corner where you know we can afford to pay our teachers better because we have fewer students fewer teachers and then when the enrollment Trend turns around and then we need more
and more teachers we get sort of squeezed double whammy so um and then another aspect of the things we've worked on over the years have been our plc's professional learning communities right which is teachers at a site generally sort of learning together and it seems to me that model is also more difficult if there are fewer staff members if it was only one teacher in a given grade so I wonder probably not tonight for a discussion but I wonder if we should be talking about a floor in terms of Staffing um whether we want um no promises but whether we would want to look at a policy of two classrooms per grade K through six I know we've had I've had discussions with you I think in the past about sixth grade because sixth grade
is difficult at elementary school with only a single teacher so we talked about that looking at the kindergarten enrollment data historically there are two or three cohorts as I see them they're sort of under our 30 student Target for fourth through sixth grades so I think it might move us as a board before those students hit fourth grade to have a consistent standard about whether we're going to have one fourth grade one fifth grade right at given schools and so I think that's that's something we've got to chew on because I think when the when the budget Review Committee was looking at these numbers and the reduction in teachers it wasn't necessarily clear to us that going to one classroom at a given site in a group and grade was on the table because it's
I don't think it's something we may not ever have done but it's just something that's on my mind because yeah we all certainly hope that the enrollment Trend turns around I think for the viability of our schools but we also want to I think as a board we've been a policy that we want to keep all of our schools open we're not going to look at contraction so we're going to do that I think we need to work through the ramifications um just a quick comment that uh we're still deficit spending for the most part uh which means our expenses exceed our Revenue um and I mean that's something we can't do forever the result of that is that I've been cut into our Reserves at a certain point they went out and then so
um the way I look at things is um I'm willing to trust Sandra carrying teachers to make Staffing decisions in the context of we're already doing a deficit spending and making them in such a way that it really has the least impact possible on our students and so you have the technology and experience I don't know so I believe to trust you there any other comments Steve or how much all right moving on to public hearing great stick six to eight science for illness option so I have the honor of inviting Diane Quintana a coordinator of curriculum instructions a presentation on a sixth eighth grade science curriculum recommendation I just want to mention not only um has been wonderful Diane in the curriculum office she and I taught together almost 20 years ago at the
junior high level so it's just such an honor to work with her in this capacity and I'm excited for you to meet her and hear a little bit more welcome Diane thank you you both like 15. curriculum instruction I did start out with Carrie and Sunnyvale um so honored to be here in in this position I am because of you so thank you um so I'm here tonight to present a recommendation for our sixth to 8th grade science curriculum uh and the impetus for my recommendation tonight is stated directly in lesds El Cap that we will adopt ngss Alliance science curriculum to provide a baseline for all of the teachers in our district and teachers can supplement as needed based on the kids um so I have three points that I want to cover the
pilot timeline um I'll present some data and next steps so here's our timeline at a glance um uh my heart fits with teachers so I support teachers prior to this role I was an induction Mentor um my heart and soul sits with kids so I was a math and science teacher but I teach kids right um so I would be remiss to not mention the eight teachers that have been involved in this two-year long pilot if I can get them all right I have sixth grade teachers Debbie Longo and Laurel McNeil um from block Junior High there is Cindy Kane Sheila Morrissey Diane Sasaki and Megan Greenbaum and at Eagan we have Gina osberg and Julie Leeds that's being teachers total um so in 2122 school year there were two curricula that were piloted Twigg
and McGraw-Hill inspired at the end of that school year there was a science pilot meeting and it landed with there's flaws in both the curriculum it would not be right for us to settle on one of those two and we need an additional year to find the right crystal uh September 2022 we get to Pilot number three which is amplify spend about two to three weeks in that pilot come January we meet on a curriculum council with an amplify and Elevate update and then January to March we went into pilot number four which was Elevate including the training um just in March we had our Elevate teacher review day and here we are now with their recommendation um so just a really quick this is a really great summary visual of a unit within Elevate
um it's based on if you start if you see the start here the engage in green um it's based on the 5V instructional model so students get engaged or hooked with some kind of phenomenon it's the point where they kind of get excited right about whatever they're about to learn um they go into some exploration once they're given uh the essential idea and the core ideas they explain and elaborate there's so much in there and I actually brought um that big tub is a sample lab kit there's a te there they're the student workbook but to even give a glimpse of what is in the explain and elaborate portion I mean in 30 seconds it's Hands-On Labs virtual Labs interactivities there's um a science student workbook notebook there's just so much that goes on in
there and students have the opportunity to hear especially to think about investigations posing looking at problems causing Solutions trying things out I got to see Gina osberg's lab it was so fun and I wish I invented the video of the students going on that that was just the excitement in there um but there's so much opportunity for students to engage in the science to do the science and then the evaluate piece I kind of have an issue with it being at the end because it's never really at the end right there's always this fluid process of trying to figure out are the students learning what are they learning what do they know um and there's so many opportunities embedded within Elevate for teachers to do that not only the opportunities but also um scaffolded models
of questioning for the teachers based on web's um dok does knowledge levels um so I so you know given that this is a two-year process with four different curricula I wish I could say this is the perfect one and this is why I'm recommending it but I don't think the perfect or a perfect curriculum exists although we can say that the teachers the qualitative data says yes this is the curriculum that presents the standards accurately like that's kind of right accurately um the materials for Elevate were the most in depth of the four curricula that they looked at so far they really love the wide variety of Assessments so again that's the formative assessments throughout and also the assessment at the end the summative assessments um and for teachers that may be newer to the
curriculum which is probably going to be all of them except for the pilot teachers in the fall there's this little yellow timer that kind of designates kind of a priority um standards or lessons and then on the student end the quantitative feedback this represents uh 656 students so 70 of them I just chose one big question uh based on your experience please indicate your overall rating of elevate and 70 of them said yes I choose this one uh at our latest teacher review day uh this was with the eight pilot teachers coming together to really talk about the four curricula that they had adopted already so it's Elevate Amplified twig and McGraw-Hill Inspire and I asked them just to quickly rank their preferences number one is the highest preference four is the lowest preference um
and it's a pretty glaring it's standing out that six of eight landed on elevated Diane can I bother you for one minute yeah because we adopted quick science for our tk5 program yeah and I uh uh twig spent many many years developing tk5 science and when our teachers um highlighted twig for Middle School it is not yet fully developed so all of their time and energy was in their tk5 curriculum and it was partially so I don't want you to get the impression that it is in poor quality curriculum because it's an outstanding curriculum for in the tk5 realm carry on Diane thank you for adding that yeah uh so if my recommendation is taken to you and adopted I would like just to um just our next steps would be to purchase the materials
and in I believe August 7th we have the Elevate reps coming to provide training so the non-pilot teachers or or the pilot teachers who want to come back for a refresh will have full-on Elevate training because there is the um there's a digital component and then also all of that foreign thank you anybody have any questions hi hi thank you so much for doing this it's quite the process yeah so uh and I really appreciate however gross that you guys went through the whole thing just one little tiny question sure we said that with Elevate the con was that the labs needed to be modified is this something that our teachers can do to kind of make it into like a you know yes what they want absolutely and I think also yes absolutely so
it's not really if you are able to fix it yes highly capable yes very yes so much excitement I really wish I had put in a video of the kids in that lab it was just amazing all right any other questions I'm here um purchase materials it's yeah 260 000 for the eight year adoption um 60k for the love kits also for six six seven years there were several years where I was stockpiling uh Lottery funds that we get from the state in the lottery that is specific for textbook adoption so we've been planning for this money uh the the six eight is a smaller cost than the tk5 just simply on the number of teachers system and two that we have identified Lottery funds are restricted be sent for textbooks thank you and the
subway Institute um that's going to get paid for on the same audience they also have one-time dollars restricted again educator Effectiveness money that we can utilize for the center of professional development that general fund s thank you any important comments beyond that all right thank you still very much um and actually we go on I realized I didn't do a public hearing including the gavel down like should I do that yeah we do that right now because normally you would she would prevent and now you open a public hearing yeah taking this book speaks before she could prevented but anyway um public hearing is now open any more any comments about this um all right public hearing is close um any body else want to provide any more comment we're moving on to agenda item
before because this is where we would go into adoption um and uh already can I get a motion to approve grade six through eight science curriculum zero all right very excited all right we're moving on to um five uh six and seven kind of go together um The Heritage months a recognition of Heritage months um I Came Upon This partly because we were actually receiving uh basically template resolutions recognizing uh for this month um Asian Pacific heritage month and Jewish American heritage month but you know I didn't realize we're doing this mid-school year um and you know could possibly do this mid-school year and I wanted to make sure that you know our school district has this anti-bias framework and we really have been really making an effort in De uh diversity equity and inclusion
such that I felt our next step is to make sure we are recognizing all of the diversity of our School community uh be it parents be it teachers be it our uh students while we're looking at this uh mid-year with the help of Marcy I was able to find some websites that gave us a list I I don't necessarily think this is exhaustive um and it may not be exhaustive if times changes too in the efforts that we are always lifelong Learners I definitely want to you know revisit this regularly as to are we missing heritages that are represented in our community um so I I bring you this list of us to consider uh for possibly starting to commemorate uh with a resolution um yeah seems to be every month um and then some
possible resolutions to go inside uh with May which is uh which happens to be Asian Pacific heritage month and Jewish American Heritage one so do and you have questions for the first question so where did the list come from it came from the state department um and that had a list and then there were a couple others um the University of Buffalo had a list and I actually worked with both of them together to get more positives okay yeah that was my question yeah I mean I was poking around a little bit too and it seemed like so there's no official or recommended lists from some Source like everybody has their own lists and there's a lot of differences so I mean I think my question is around that your comments about whether or not
this right list sort of what do we envision the process to be for our community to have input into what this list of Heritage wants is right because I think that's the if we're doing this I feel like we need to do this as a reflection of our community and so our community members have to have some opportunity to suggest ones that reflect their ethnicities since this binomium is exhausted yeah for the ethicities that are represented so um well I don't know brother trustees have a sense for how we do that or or what that process um the other comment I'll make is that I think if we're going to do this I would like to see us adopt some kind of guidance for our for us our administrators for our teachers about cultural observances
that we would like to recommends be avoided for tests for other things where we have members of our community who are going to be out of school that day many of those days shift year to year and it's a sort of an annual problem for PP meetings board meetings everything else avoid those things I think I mean I think it would be great and I think it's in some ways more meaningful than populations by us to actually try to make the lives of our constituents Easier by proactively identifying those conflicts and avoid it and so on I would love to see us stop some kind of Community process for doing that yes services the different religions that most of our calendar is Baseline Christians Israel yeah um so just throwing it out there for the
board to consider that um another way to do this is instead of slicing it by specific heritages because we are inevitably going to forget solution um what if we didn't you know because we are we so believe in diversity equity and inclusion to kind of pass sort of um let's say a resolution at the beginning of or reappropriately every school year that we believe in DPI we believe in the strength our strength is from the diversity of our community and not call out any specific heritage that would just be another way to I I get that yeah I just feel that it's uh I think feel like it makes it's more meaningful if we are naming each one and we do need to figure out which ones and and actually if we are missing ones
have a process for for them to come in and to change this list I I don't think this list is perfect um but I do feel like in the starting point um and that it's a good way for us about targets it really to me it's like well you know maybe there are mistakes on this but we learn we cross out things we add things but we continue that process and we are like on Partners but that's my take the one that's seven years ago um I happy to recognize different heritages that are not quite male Christian um oranges um I would like us to do something together change lives of uh Asian American sort of Jewish or whatever who is there yeah and an easy thing to do is passive resolution but I think
action is more louder than words doing both so I I don't have anything against this yes no I do agree the resolutions are not always not doing it all but it shows that we support and then we also have the antibiotics framework that is actually informing how we are changing our social studies and just teaching in general such as that we are doing the doing too I think this is just an extra step right but that's my my take yes so um getting back to kind of what Brian was saying I hadn't thought about the whole Community input the idea I think that's a great idea um and my question we also what does it mean when you passed a resolution like yes ideologically we support and [Music] whatever the the month is like um
but is that creating more work for our teachers now does that mean that they have to start putting up this I mean anything more than they would normally do like I don't want to create more work for our teachers I want to embrace this as a district right so I'm just asking what is it I thought and I think I'm going to get out there that they they know it's the month and it's giving them something to do but it is not not giving them much more it's just recognizing um I think all of us in this room didn't know that it was Asian American Heritage one and Jewish heritage month because it's all over social social media and I think our teachers know that too and it's you know it could be a fleeting
talk about it or not but it is it is recognizing those hair religions so I know it is not the means of the anti-bias education we do but it is something anything else when you want to wear this one yes I meant that I would I miss that I literally heard about that today I'm like gosh darn it it's not on my list which I would actually um add that um but it's not Heritage but it was we also had disability which is not necessarily inherited to lose um on that list but it's in that room so I think being that we're an educational institution yeah that thinking that is on education and celebrating the accomplishments and contributions you know like that would make me very that would make me happy yeah like that that
seems very appropriate for us to as a school district yeah so we asked um members of the community to suggest a uh rather than as randomly getting emails from folks yeah of a process out there that goes back with us makes more sense I'm struggling to be honest with this I get the idea yeah I have nothing against the idea but I'd rather see us doing something impaction on something and my concern is that then are we now thought for Medics okay so but for future months we do this every month um are we going to be creating harsh Ron faculty to do something and that's my concern and then any concerns if you aren't bad trust those yeah and then you know Brian's point that accounted that actually is actually that makes a lot
of sense yeah so you know as we're going through those steps having things that are reflective of the wood spets that makes more sense there random resolutions to me never made any sense on any level and so like I said but it's like I don't want to go downstairs every month we spend time Drafting and then having to vote on random resolutions if they're not going to actually have them even have to talk but rather have a student had more books on that which I always wondered about the starting the year with that kind of conversation of the inclusion and all the awards that you use which I can never remember but I agree with the following are are more important to me than calling things out and I guess that's where I struggle a
little bit is to calling things out um because it can be a positive yes but it can also be flipped and used as the negative kind of feel that oftentimes to stay that's where we end back to the negative side of it I think that's just my own mindset so we have a hard time so um negatively I'm not going to vote against any of this but if we're going to go down these calves I'd rather have us formally figure out a way to deal with the rather than randomly deal with in the Steel's random and so that's why I have a hard time jumping on the board with oh yeah let's do this now because so if you could have a more thoughtful process of having a swimming board might be even more excited
and we're looking to do that than to do one-off sort of preservations yeah the idea was coming up with that the list and having it added on to was that it is not uh but one-off it is one-off because I brought two resolutions for this but it is the idea that this is a practice and that this does I do 100 believe this needs to be improved I just feel that it um I do feel like it will uh fall aside and we'll just go back to uh I don't necessarily agree with we say one we were continue with the just generic anti anti-bias I think we do recognize our different heritages separately um and so that's where I sort of differ with Steve and Shelley on that but so think about my governance training
if we want something to be if you want something in a body like this where the members change all the time not be a one-on and that sounds to me like board policy so my suggestion would be and I'm happy to be a member of this that we your direction for one or two of us to work through the administration come up with a proposed board policy probably in the ball given the time constraints speed wants to volunteer to memorialize this so basically establish that we're whatever we end up doing is for the public board shall recognize sort of I would refer it um this direction was given sort of both her recognition of months like this potentially and also potentially if we're doing some sort of guidance about I think it's a good idea
I just wonder if it already Falls within a group that we already have um which we haven't been doing much was certainly fantastic yes but the task force was focused on curriculum yeah which is fine I just wanted to uh and and so I I am fine with it becoming a board policy task force whatever for this ad hoc whatever we want to call it in whatever since part of that too I think it does though because that's curriculum and we're saying we don't want to create curriculum tasks for teachers this is very long you think that it's as of course I'm just trying to remember there are different components of the task force they started with curriculum uh I have to go back would it be useful to have at the beginning of a
year um session on what we're doing to increase diversity equity and inclusion and then an update sometimes in Spring we've had an updated somewhere recently from Fred from on it which I definitely saw that there was movement in the curriculum area it's just we haven't I just remembered there was a little more true intent than than that and so I was kind of putting yeah because it's something I really very much care about I I wanted to to bring forward this as a way to to at least show that our board is supportive of the different heritages uh that and uh backgrounds that Encompass our community um I am for creating a room at a Hartford for this of course because I'm coming up with it I'd like to be honest um um and I
was willing to literally write every last one of these resolutions I was not going to put any work other than somebody maybe proofreading My My Craft to make sure it wasn't uh it was good and that it it covered all the bases um just can I ask if the csva have like either a list of out broader than Heritage months but a list of months we haven't found anything we brought it up in an Lac um meeting today Vladimir and uh or I brought it up Vladimir was there um and we are thinking of putting together as a county SEC SBA a list of these holidays and also come up with a Trope of these resolutions so it is actually in play um but it literally started today Brown County is usually at the Forefront
of any yes yes I'm very very grateful that our uh legislative action committee is thinking about this do all the schools have um uh International Vision or just a slight few schools tonight that's a great question I believe every school at least our elementary schools have either a multicultural Affair and interdimensional fair if not a day an evening or a week depending on you guys it may not be every year for some that they do have every last one I think Santa Rita has the most robust um but all the emotions I don't know yeah so from what I'm seeing uh at least as it relates to agenda item I5 um the direction that we create um only two board members who else together um we may actually want to speak with community members but
we may want to figure out how we want to if your board members figuring out how to do this first yeah it's been doing it for years how do we how do we tap what they've been doing can I say that again we have fqt has been doing this for years this conversation of what ones we're trying to recognize sure they bring people that knowledge the community to standards the knowledge you said it's laughing that's what it is so that's what I'm saying and it could be doing a road show and finding out you know local communities um so that's the direction on that I guess you guys didn't contact me and start to figure out this is going to be on a community or not just this just no procedure if it's ad hoc
I don't know I'm just trying to remember I mean we're not talking about the product Community we're talking about this okay no it wasn't what I was contemplating um basically just I believe the tournament superintendent said hot committee which is basically just sort of a general understanding right so yeah good power to create committees so let's enter now so number five on six and seven there's those are both action items yeah and that's actually one of my friends please I was discussing all three at once but I'm going to move on to six and seven because I I was finishing up five first um so I guess I guess I I do want to know whether I did want to be passing these revolutions this evening um and so but these are both uh heavily
uh these are people people in our community I do understand us doing this right now and then not having the list is a problem um sorry I am I am thinking out yeah um I guess I am willing to table this uh for now um I just really want to know that this is a thing that we are going to be working on um in the future um and that it's not uh you know today it doesn't as I as you can tell from when I uh my speaking tonight I am passionate about this and recognizing what different continues so um unless anybody wants to else wants to vote on that uh do I have a consensus that we want to table these two the lack of emotions all right but do we want to
vote to put it on us like let's say in August uh agenda no I know but you're saying that you want to do it I'm just saying no no no but I'm saying you want to be actually does get addressed it doesn't fall through again so I will I will make sure it happens yeah so you don't want the committee to just kind of meet and then not come back yeah uh I know uh I know a lot of things I'll be doing this this summer this will be one of them all right so we are going to table um I get six and seven moving on to foreign policy all right do you have another large uh collection of updated foreign [Music] parents one of our first meeting in June I think it's the
fifth um come back for action in the meantime if you have any um questions or want to review anything you can let me know in between it gives me some time to read through um new updated policies anybody have any uh questions about what they've read this this week just a general question these are all csba uh have we made any substitute changes to I don't know the answer to that don't be typically we follow the cfba oftentimes there's a choose option one or choose option two program but you get those details yeah I did notice where there was like a junior high and a high school thing we only had the junior high thing so it's usually what I have to catch and it was nice not to have to catch it so I
appreciate that thank you but they were all sensitive as it relates to the change in law right anybody else have any questions sir the comments on my board policy essay all right moving on to board and administration comments Kerry thank you Eric thank you Sandra nothing new thank you Steve yeah um Vladimir octagon Awards even the ones that didn't make the list I think we were involved in just looking at them to see you know the responding ideas also as it relates to the Hawking award I think that we should uh present to our programs for sure yeah it's four Awards I think there are lots of equipments into while it's a nominal award it is something you have that award ceremony and you have districts are like oh my God that's great I want
to learn who knows it's kind of giving back to the whole Santa Clara County Community I have already talked a little bit about when the next I don't know when the nomination period is or when you'll know um uh so yeah uh shallow I know I went to lot of events with many of you enjoyed the Sunnyvale shelter which is really quite eye-opening the LISD Community Festival challenge team Hoffman Awards Mountain View celebration of leaders the one thing I wanted to just actually say is I visited the element homework club yeah the Venture tutor connection runs and it was so great to see the engagement of the kids and the tutors and um that we have room to keep that going really lovely little opinion and you think that you two go there so that's
it I pretty much did a lot of the same things that YouTube did so I guess uh I have nothing to add um any agent [Music]
