agenda and I will first look to you Dr. Adamson. Are there any changes or for the >> There are no changes. >> Thank you. Um we will go out to public comment next and I am seeing the sign that there are no hands up for public comment. Um board, is there any discussion on the adoption of the agenda this evening? It's pretty short and straightforward. Um okay, seeing none, um would someone like to make the motion? >> I'll move that we adopt the agenda as presented. >> I'll second. >> Thank you. Motion made by Trusty Sham, Clerk Shamas, and seconded by Trusty Hazen. All those in favor, please say I. I. Any nose? Motion carries. 5 Z. Thank you. Um, this is a regular meeting of the Pacific Grove Unified School District Board of Education. The first thing we do when we con reconvene in um open session is report out the actions that were taken by the board in close session um for this evening um for items A and B negotiations with PGTA and CSEA. We will be taking up those items um after open session when we return to close at the end of the meeting. Um for item C, public employee um complaint information was received. For item D, conference with legal counsel for both existing litigations. Item was re info was received with regard to each case. And
we will take up superintendent goals midyear check-in um when we return to close session at the end of this meeting. Um assistant superintendent Jordan, next on our agenda is the pledge of allegiance. Would you lead us this evening? The flag is still behind you. Pledge allegiance >> to the flag of the United States of America and to the for its nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and >> that was a lovely recitation of the pledge. Thank you all for joining us. >> Best ever. Yeah. Um, okay. This evening, the next thing on our agenda is a presentation from Forest Grove Elementary School. So, I will turn it over to Principal Arbor and her team. So excited tonight to present our UPK program. This has been one of the best gifts that Forest Grove has been
able to receive this year and no matter what site we're on. I'm just so excited to have all of our kiddos and also our amazing staff. So, I'd like to introduce Aaron Humami and Jennifer Deanda and our kids will be doing a cute presentation for you and then sharing a little more about our program tonight. Erin, I'm gonna give it to you. Okay. >> Love it. True. Go for it. >> Thank you. Keep on clapping. Love it. Um, well, I just want to welcome you guys here. Thank you for being here. We do have a cute little song for our kiddos to share with you. Um, and then we can share a little bit about our program after they show you how amazing they are. Um, can I introduce them? >> I would love that.
>> Okay. So, we have Truit, his brother Hunter, who is a graduate of our program. I don't know if he's going to get up and sing or not, but he might. >> Only if you want to. Hunter. We have Gadiel. Do we want to have them walk up? Sure. Tell their name. >> Want to come on up. Troop. >> All right. >> Madison and Juniper here. Turn this way so everybody can see you. >> Hello. >> Sure. I can hold that for you. Come on up. >> Say anywhere up in here. Maybe next to Madison. In between Madison. >> Okay. And we actually have two songs if that would be okay. They're briefed. And Jennifer is going to um lead us more than I am because will help all of us. You'll all be very
angry. Let me take a picture. >> Sure. We can just leave our >> Absolutely. >> Sunshine. Ready? Mr. Sun ready. Ready. Mr. Sun. Children are asking so they can play with you sonells. Let's get our hearts. Ready buddy. Are you ready and four by four? >> Make a bow or a curtsy. We can go back to our >> Yeah, I can't be here by myself. Very shy. Just kidding. Okay. Anyway, um I'll start by introducing myself. My name is Aaron Homami. I am a local here. I was not born here, but I've been here for about 40 years now. So, long time. Uh grew up in the area, went to community college, moved away clearly. I'm back. I've been back here gosh, 22 years, I think. So, long time. I love this. I wouldn't do
anything else. My credential actually is for preschool only. So, it's all all for a good reason. So anyway, um all right. So we if you want to scroll through, we'll give you a little brief highlights. Um I want to introduce Jennifer Deanda and let her give a little bit of background as well. I'll be quick. My name is Jennifer Deanda. I've had the pleasure of serving and teaching in the school district since 2007 and I've had a number of roles. I actually started off uh working for the parents place and teaching classes at the high school um GED, high school diploma and so forth. And after a little while, I decided I wanted to come back to preschool. And so I've worked at all of the preschool sites. Um, but I've done a whole lot
of work with Aaron over the last couple of years. It's been a great opportunity to step in for a little while while one of our teachers is furthering her education. A pleasure to be here. Um, can't think of anything else. Nice to be here. >> And that couldn't have been better timing. Our um, state preschool IIA, please introduce yourself and give just a brief background. >> Hi everybody. Sorry, I'm a few minutes late here. My name is Shiain Lynn. Um I've uh I've been joining the team for like almost half an year and uh um I love the program. It's like um I'm a uh stay preschool IIA and uh I have a teacher st teacher and then Aaron's the special teacher and we also have a power professional. Erin's um um IIA and both
of us we work together pretty hard and we um you know try our best to give our kids love and uh attention and to make sure they're safe and have fun and also building you know um environment for the kids to learn like emotionally, socially um physically, conductively and um um music like our teacher Jennifer she's so good at music so we just you know help the kids build their skill and develop and one thing has have fun so I really enjoy as a mom I have a kid five-year-old in first grade kinder as a mom I I really you know love enjoying working there to to see the kids grow yeah thank you that's all I can say thank you thank you that was Perfect timing. Okay. All righty. So, um we'll start just
to briefly talk about our eligibility dates. Um so, UPK includes students. So, if you turn three by September 1st, you'll be eligible for state preschool. And um this uh slide just explains a little bit about our curriculum alignment. Um if you are interested in the link, it's obviously there. Um UPK TK teachers collaborate weekly. um uh well daily really but to assist in aligning our curriculum continuum meeting students developmentally appropriate needs. Frog straight is our current curriculum that we use sorry on a daily basis. We to ensure kindergarten readiness at developmentally appropriate levels and our goal is to meet every student where they are developmentally and build from there. Key word developmentally appropriate, right, Larry? Um, our UPK schedule, students arrive at 8:55, leave approximately 1:55. Um, again, all of the information is there if
you'd like to go over it. Um, but I won't bore you with every single detail. If you need to get a hold of us, um, the Bors Grove office phone number is here, Jennifer's email, and my email is here as well. Thank you so much UPK team. I just wanted to add a plug. Please save that Forest Grove phone number and come by our office if you have a child who's eligible. We are currently enrolling and we would love to have additional students um be able to join us in all of the fun and all of the learning. So, please stop by the office if you know of anyone who's in that age range to be able to join us next year. Thank you all. Let's have our students come back up and join us.
>> Yes, we we'll take a photo at the end. But before we I just want to just say thank you number one to this team to our students for being here this evening. Oh my goodness. I were you singing that song about the sun for the whole last week or two weeks because guess what? I think someone was listening cuz the sun is out in force this week and I think it's all because of your beautiful singing. So, thank you for bringing Let's give our put our hands again together for you. That was beautiful singing. Wow. Wow. Well, we have certificates for each of you because it takes a lot of courage to come and and sing in front of so many people. So, we wanted to present those to you and present them to
our our staff as well. But I also just want to say thank you to our families who are here this evening uh for sharing your incredible children with us. I don't get to see them every day as this team does, but I have seen them grow since they started. It's been such a joy and to see that growth and development and watch them thrive and we know that you put a lot of trust and faith in us and so we're grateful for that. So, thank you uh for sharing them. So, yes, I am going to we have got quite a few certificates here, but I know there are four of them. So, I wonder if Principal Arun if you could maybe pull the four out and we'll give those to those four students. Thank you.
and um and then I will go ahead and present to Okay, thank you. These are the ones right lovely. Yes, I saw her right Madison. I think they were doing a potty break. Madison, come on up here with your friends. We have certificates to give you all and you've got yummy goodies in there as well. All right, so let's see. Gad Gabrielle Quinti Gadiel. Gabrielle, it's got your name on. You see that? Let's put our hands together for Gadiel Madison Terry. at the same time. I wonder Truit. Oh, Truit. So fun. And Juniper Ramirez in your beautiful. >> All right. And then I'd like to give something to recognize our teachers. Uh thank you for your commitment uh to just building our culture of we uh starting at this preschool level. I know it's been
a year and again families, your patience and trust. We've had to do a few little moves this year, but you have all just just supported us. You have collaborated with us. You've maintained and just put your faith and trust in us. And this team just not even skipping a beat uh with any of those. And so it really does speak to the fact that this is the program wherever you find yourselves is where the home is. And you have truly um built that heart throughout the year and we're so grateful. Uh so Erin Hermami thank you >> Jennifer Deander is yes >> very kind of you for being herein then >> and then I know Jennifer Hulet was you we'll make sure she gets that one very good so can we get everyone in the
front and I'm going to ask all of our trustees and our assistant superintendent to come and we're going to do a group photo. So students, come to the front for a a photo with your biggest smiles. That's indeed. Certificates in hand, please. That was wonderful. Definitely our joy for today. Um thank you Dr. Adamson for always starting our meeting off with the presentation and also um that reminder from principal arin that registration is open. Is that correct? is correct. It is. And we're going to have a booth at the good old days parade this year for both days to recruit more families as well and other things. But yes, thank you. Um, okay. We'll move on to the communications portion of our agenda. We do not have a student rep present tonight, so we will
not be hearing from them. Um, next is board member comments or written comms. I am now realizing that I failed to make a list of written comms. Um, does anyone else want to start us off with what they've got? And my apologies. It's on my to-do every time. It's just not to done. Um, Dr. Hazen, do you have yours in front of you? >> I have a few. Yes. So, it may not be complete, but I have the ones that I >> appreciate it. Um, we received two emails about LCAP community input, both the scheduling and the details of it. Um, received one email I received one email about a student and their um, disenrollment from the district. I received one email about um, a potential complaint matter that's coming and one email from um,
Dr. Gus too about upcoming MCSBA annual dinner. But I probably missed a few in there because >> Thank you. >> Actually, one more too. Sorry, I just remembered is one on the virtual edtech panel. We were ref referenced a video to watch about the role of technology in schools. >> Okay. Thank you for um listing off all of those. Um any other trustees have emails or written communications to add? >> Okay. Uh Trusty Almer, >> I do. Um, I also received an email about strengthening clear universal abuse prevention policies. >> Um, that trusty wax or schmos anything to add just because I have been remiss in my uh responses. >> Oh, no. No. Well, I I think there was an email. I think you may have someone may have stated as two LCAP emails, but
I think there was a email about um mental health funding, >> therapist funding, >> mental well therapist. >> Thank you. >> Okay. >> Um Okay, with that, that sounds like we've covered written communications. Um board member comments. Um I I'll start. Um today was the um community monthly community human services meeting that I attend as a representative for our agency. It was the last board meeting for the outgoing CEO Robin McCrae. Um she served the agency for 33 years. Um and the new so we approved the contract for the new CEO who is Sean Stone. He is currently the chief operating officer of the organization. And so he'll be starting off um with CHS as the CEO in April. He has been with the organization already for nine years. Um Trusty Wax joined us for
a portion of the meeting today and what we were discussing is um structural deficit. The agency also has a structural deficit and with less funds coming from the state and other places looking at how we can ensure that we can continue to provide services while we're not getting money for housing and beds and um mental health. So those kind of discussions like our budget discussions are ongoing and trying to find a way to just to keep the critical services that people rely on um throughout the region. So, and then we will there will also be I think a retirement event for Robin and I believe I have a resolution to provide to you Dr. Adamson so that we can potentially recognize her for her service to the to the community and to the region. Um,
next thing was I just wanted to uh mention that we have our well my first joint subcommittee meeting between the city and um PGSD coming up on the 31st. So, if there are any um items that are percolating that anyone on the border would like to have added to that agenda, um I think that's an option right now. I'd be happy to have them. Um and then just another reminder, not well important but not exciting. Um just for all of us on the board, April 1st is our filing deadline for our statement of economic interest, our compl conflict of interest forms. Um, it's required annually public record and there is a financial penalty if you don't submit it on time. So, um, because I was reminding myself, I thought I would mention it to all
of us. Um, and with that, I will, uh, just go down this way. Trusty Shamas, if you have any comments to make. >> No, none tonight. Okay. D Hazen, thank you. Trusty Atmar, Trusty Wax. Okay. Um, with that we will move on to superintendent report. Dr. >> Wonderful. So I just have some slides that I'm going to be you know actually uh providing in for my future reports just so there's a visual as we go but this is the perfect night to begin it because my first item tonight has to do with some celebrations. So um uh director Elgazi thank you. The four that I am going to be highlighting is number one, our employee of the year program, our LCAP community engagement input updates that are forthcoming, our TK and kindergarten parent information night,
and some district-wide celebrations. So, moving on to the first the next slide, uh that we were I was just so filled with joy to be able to finish recognizing our employees of the year. Uh this is a a new program that we began this year. It's been fully and completely a grassroots movement. uh employees were selected by their own peers. Uh we had a total of 87 uh nominees uh within the twoe period when we you know first launched this back in January. Um and it's just been I can only just say just a really you know just a joyful uh process. Uh we uh we I did reach out to all of our employees and I invited anyone who wanted to volunteer to serve on the selection committee. And so once again even you
know the selections that were made from those names that were submitted were selected by our employees themselves. Uh we had one classified and one certificated employee from every single site. I the district office was included in that and then we did one manager of the year across the district. Uh which did not include cabinet members or myself. Uh and so again that was just been wonderful. We uh will be celebrating all of our nominees at at our second meeting in April. Uh and so you know we we'll be inviting them with their families to do that officially. But for now I thought it would just be fun for you to see some of the photos uh from each of those nominees from each of our sites. Uh to overall we recognize 12 employees across the
district. Six classified, five certificated and one manager. Each of whom truly you know through the input we received it's very clear how they go above and beyond uh in you know working and serving our students. uh they you know I think what really came through in everything that was submitted for them is that they are not only doing their jobs they are changing lives and the difference they are making in the work that they do um and it truly will be an honor to celebrate them on April 23rd. I do want to also take a moment to celebrate something special. If we'll move to the next the next slide that is also yeah those are our middle school celebrations and then I think the third one uh continuing on with some of our employees of
the year the next slide identified overall we we selected no the slide before that director thank you uh we you know the selection committee was also charged with identifying one teacher of the year out of all of the teachers that were selected and one classified employee of the year so I'm proud to mention and she just happens to here as well. Miss Laura Lee Gayona was our teacher of the year who we submitted for the act for the county program and Dr. Denine Gus uh you know in in talking with us she actually happened to be out here last week uh was just so excited to see that we you know had actually participated in that in that this year because um I don't think that has been the case in the past. Uh so
congratulations to Laura Lee Gayona. Um and then uh from the classified employees uh the selection committee it was a very clear winner Mr. Jeff Stzman uh one of one of our uh maintenance and operations employees uh and so we actually submitted his name as our district selection for the maintenance and custodial category and he was selected as the winner in that category and so we are delighted we'll be celebrating him in the coming weeks. he will actually be moving on to the state level to represent uh the entire county. So huge. So Dr. Denin Gas, our Dr. Porus, our former superintendent, came out to recognize him at a surprise uh acknowledgement uh here at the district office last week. Um and more to come there. There is a celebratory dinner on May 8th where both
Miss Gayona and Mr. Stzman will be recognized with their families. Um and so we're looking forward to that, but just really thrilled and congratulations to them. Um, and yes, the last slide really, we were able to get his family to be there for that and you can see there's a big giant fake check of $500, which really is truly, you know, the amount that he'll be receiving. But just very exciting. Um, you know, one of the messages I did when we came went to the sites to recognize each of these employees is that yes, these are incredible employees, but really sending out that message that and each of them, you know, mention it in receiving that award. They don't do this alone. you know, we're just so incredibly lucky to have an incredible team of
employees of adults across this district who, you know, are just uh working their hearts out to do everything uh in service of our students. So, just really fortunate. All right, I think the second one really I wanted to highlight just some of the dates for our upcoming LCAP input opportunities. Um, listing all of those dates, we have our first cultural proficiency session on February 24th at the Pacific I'm sorry, that's the wrong date. No, it's not February. It is um March 24th. We will correct that. I'm so sorry. Thank you uh President Neri. Um so that is it's actually next next Tuesday and invitations have gone out and um communication has gone. So we'll make sure that's correct. Our parent advisory and safety meeting will be happening um from 5 to 6:30 p.m. And again,
I see that date is not on there, but that is Mar is April 1st, I believe, is the date for that. And then our community input meeting from 6:00 to 7:30. But again, oh my goodness, the date's not there. Um, that is April 8th. Thank you, Dr. Hadquis. Yes. So, we'll make sure we add those dates to it. But again, all of those communications have gone out to our families. But also, we have sent out individual surveys. So, that way we can also capture any parents who are not able to or family members unable to attend can absolutely. We still want to hear from you. That's really, really important. And I think the important piece here is that, you know, each of all of the input we gather is helping shape the future of our
schools and our future decision- making. Um, all right. The third one is yes, welcoming our newest learners and Principal Arburun who talked a little bit about that for our state preschool and UPK program. Um, but we have our TK and kindergarten pre-registration. It is definitely open and we have our parent information night coming up on March 25th. That's next week at the PGHS library. So, really looking forward to that and promoting that. Our teachers and principles will be a big part of that. And then, yes, our final one, school celebrations. We are so proud uh to be uh we will be recognizing in Anaheim at Disneyland um our PE Pacific Grove Middle School for being identified now three consecutive years as a California distinguished school. So really really proud. We'll actually be celebrating them at
their site tomorrow morning. Um and then we just learned within the last week the community high school has been identified as a 2026 model continuation school. So kudos uh to principal and the entire CHS team. We'll also be heading over that way tomorrow morning to celebrate with them and the students. Uh so definitely lots to look forward there. Uh we had our first open house season open house session last night and that was in the middle school. They did an outstanding job of just highlighting the you know incredible things that are happening um at the middle school and welcoming their upcoming sixth graders. So really really well done to Principal Roach, Assistant Principal Tabani and the team. And then just really wanted to, you know, just end with that reminder, just a word of thanks.
Over the past several weeks, we've really truly had an opportunity to connect with so many of our our community members, our parents, our families, our staff. Um, and just that reminder that everything, you know, we do it really starts and ends with our students in mind. um and our you know continuing of building that culture of we uh we want to ensure that we're continue to engage and that feedback that we receive from our students, our families and our staff is critical in that ongoing you know work that we do. So just grateful for everyone and that collaboration and with that I return to you President McNary. >> Thank you Dr. Adamson. And uh just a note as for PGMS being um a distinguished school, three years, it's actually a two-year cycle. So it's like
six straight years of being recognized as a distinguished school. Um I hope we can get something so we can I know we're broadcasting it to our community, but I hope some to the school community, but maybe just something so that the broader community can can learn about it as well. Like banners >> on banners. Absolutely. To get those printed and and posted. Yep. >> Great. Thank you. >> Yeah, thank you. That's, you know, Principal Martinez and Assistant Superintendent Joan are working on that for us. >> Looking forward to that. Um, next on our agenda this evening is the safety report. Do we have one this evening? Assistant, >> yeah, I'm going to give the brief uh report just and thank you, President McMary. Uh, some trainings and presentations. We had on the 16th of this
month infant child and adult uh CPR first aid with medics for life. We had 15 district staff certified at PG adult school. Kudos to the adult school for continuing on with this. Uh very important for our district and our community to have that offered. Uh some upcoming uh events. Uh Dr. Adamson mentioned the joint safety committee along with our LCAP. That's on the 1st uh April 1st and the agenda is going out to the safety committee as well as the LCAP committee. Montage Health Drug Prevention presentations are taking place in April uh on the 3rd of April. Robert Down fifth grade on the 24th of April. fifth grader at Forest Grove and on the 7th of April uh from 5:00 to 8:00 PM the high school is having a fentanyl night with uh regional director
central coast overdose prevention as Dr. Adamson mentioned, I believe earlier, the good old days. Uh we are coordinating with Pacific Grove Police Department for a drug awareness and overdose prevention, Narcan table, as well as uh ebike safety demonstration. And of course highlighting the registration for all of our district programs such as state preschool, uh UPK, and our TK kinder program. And then finally, um the middle school fencing project. We issued the notice to proceed. Uh they actually started today. They started the procurement process of gathering materials uh to make the uh middle school a fully enclosed closed campus about an 8week lead time on the materials for that. So um you'll start seeing the contractors out there on site starting to work here in the next uh four to six weeks. And then the uh
high school fencing project is finalizing uh is in the final phases of its design and I'll report uh that back to the board with some uh information and photographs as we progress through that design process. Thank you. Thank you for your report. Um, next we go on to um individuals desiring to address the board and I will um read out um the rules regarding public comment and that public comment on any item of interest to the public that's within the board's jurisdiction will be heard. The board will also take public comment on each specific action item prior to action. anyone wishing to address the board on a specific item um on the current agenda, which is very short, so unlikely that that's happening. Um the board will all allow reasonable time for public comment, not
to exceed 3 minutes per speaker, no more than 20 minutes. Um and then just the reminder that this is a meeting of the board of education um conducted in public and the board is limited in how it can respond to any public comments. Um, with that, first on our um public comment agenda is community members wishing to address the board on non-aggenda items. Is there anyone online or in the room wishing to speak for public comment? Okay, give that a second. And um with no one approaching the podium and no one online, we'll go on to item B, PGSD staff comments on nonaggenda items. And anyone would like to raise their hand or approach the podium. Okay. No comments on that item either this evening. It's okay. Next on our uh our agenda, moving right
along, is consent. items on the consent agenda are considered to be routine or may have been discussed at a previous board meeting. Um there's no discussion on these items prior to a board vote unless a board member requests some item be discussed or pulled from the consent agenda. And this evening we have a consent agenda consisting of items A through that's it A through N. Um, I will first go out to public comment and then I will come back to the board. Um, are there any public comments on the consent consent agenda as presented? Okay. Um, I'll bring it back up to the board now for discussion and potentially a motion. Are there any board members wishing to comment on consent? Okay, I'm just going to read the body language and say no. Um, with
that, if there is no discussion and consent is as presented, um, can I please have a motion? >> I'll make a motion to accept the full consent item. >> Okay. >> Second. >> Motion made by Dr. Hazen and seconded by Trusty Wax. All those in favor, please say I. I. >> Any opposed? Okay. Motion carries. 5 Z. Thank you everyone. Um we have one item on our action discussion agenda. It's the proposed board meeting calendar which we do see um at every board meeting. Um before I go to uh public comment, Dr. Adamson, are there any changes that we should be made aware of as a board? >> No changes. No. Okay. >> Thank you. Um public comment on the proposed board calendar. Okay. Um next we'll bring it back to the board for any
discussion on the proposed board calendar. No. Okay. Um because we are not proposing to take any action um no motion is needed and we can move on to uh our substantive item on the agenda this evening which is uh curriculum and textbook adoption mapping and planning um with executive director of educational services Dr. Hackquist. Good evening. Oh, good good evening trustees. Uh Larry Hagquist, executive director of educational services here to present the curricular planning and mapping report 2025 2026 for Pacific Grove Unified. For your convenience, I have provided a written report that can be found on page 74 of tonight's board packet. And before I get started, I would also like to take a moment to thank my assistant Leslie Trernulo who um was just so helpful in uh helping me to put together some
of the tables that you'll you'll see in the report um that I have provided. Um moving on here, uh the report contents. Uh this slide really just um mirrors the table of contents which is the first page of uh the report that I've provided. Um and what it does is it offers a background on why I'm bringing theformational item to the board. Uh an overview of the planning process uh a list of the adopted materials and recent purchases as well as information about current and future uh curricular initiatives in the district. Starting off with a little bit of background about curricular adoption. Uh in 2013 2014 um that's the that was the first year as Josh will know of what was known as the LCFF local control funding formula uh which essentially started to hand
funding decisions over to um the districts um and to the LEAs. uh the the following year was the first year that was 20145 was the first year of the local control accountability plan. And why it's called local control is essentially what the state was doing was handing a lot of the decisions over to um our local governments to us right here. Um and that uh while it was an attempt of decentralization at the state level um to kind of limit a little bit of the bureaucracy, it handed a lot of that um bure those bureaucratic matters over to the local agencies. And that's why we've seen um such a increase in the amount of um reporting and and things like that that we have to do at the local level which is explain some of
the increase in positions and things like that that we've been talking about. One of the items that um was handed over to local control was curricular decisions. prior to LCFF, what the state would do is they would publish an an adoption recommendation uh every year. So different subjects would be recommended to be adopt adopted at the district level. And so it would be an English adoption year or a math adoption year, social science adoption year. And those recommendations would um accompany funding from the state level. So you the districts would be allotted a certain amount of funds to purchase texts. That went away with local control and so it gave the districts uh the authority to make some of those decisions. Well, what we didn't have was a structure uh or um a schedule to
make those decisions. So districts kind of went all over the place with uh when they would adopt. However, uh what most districts did was follow uh an adoption pattern. And that's what I'm depicting right here on the slide. Uh typically you would see adoption of curricular frameworks first. And so these are standards aligned frameworks for a subject. Uh and then um the following year that would happen one year and then the following year you would have the state board of education adopting a a list of approved texts that are aligned with those frameworks. And then those textbook publishers go out, they do the marketing after that and they say we have our new standards align texts and they market to the districts and the districts pilot and uh generally adopt one or two years after
that. So that's what you see right here. 2023 2024 2025 are those consecutive years where districts are generally following the state pattern. We have an example of that on the next slide. in our district um where you have uh in 2023 you have a California math framework adoption. That was the most recent California framework adoption. And uh very recently um in November of 2025, this this school year, you had the state board of education approve a list of adopted materials uh for math. And what one of the things that I've outlined in my report is that we are going to be looking to adopt some uh to pilot some math materials uh in particular at the high school level. And so uh one of the changes that we're making at the high school level as
far as course offerings go kind of mirrors this um this uh pattern right here of state adoption. So the math department there has been working hard, all of our math math teachers have been working hard to make sure that we are uh following those frameworks and using new material. Um, oh, just just for your information, some of the uh core subject, uh, the most, you know, we talked about math being 2023. Um, 2014 was the ELA and ELD. That was the last time that you had a framework adoption. Um, science, the NGSS 2016, and social history, social science in 2016. uh core curriculum and recent updates. I just wanted to highlight some of the recent updates in our district uh related to core curriculum. Uh these should be familiar to this board because much of
what you see right here I have brought to prior board meetings. Um, you see the EL education. I actually had the opportunity to today to attend uh an EEL education visit uh pilot um sorry a visit from E Education because it's our first year of adoption of that curriculum. Um it's a two-day uh visit from a representative from E Education and the elementary teachers were just um I I can't say enough. I want to anybody that's online that is an elementary teacher. I just can't say um be grateful enough for the work that they're doing. It's a huge lift to adopt any new curriculum and this curriculum is particularly particularly challenging because it accompanies a lot of instructional strategies, but it's really cool to be at the sites and to see different levels of students
engaging in the same curriculum and seeing the same strategies. I I'm envisioning um you know a few years down the line once the kids have had it from TK all the way up to fifth grade, they're going to be really really familiar with all of these strategies that accompany the curriculum. And um just thank you to those teachers for making it happen. It's just so cool to see it happen um live and in person. Um I wanted to highlight just the years right here um because those are some of the most current purchases. You see 25 26 for Yale Education, 23 24 for Desmos Amplify. Um we'll be piloting big ideas 20 26 27 at the high school level for math science 2526. You may recall a presentation in the spring last year of the
marine science text. History and social science. You may recall the uh ethnic studies uh adoption. And um we also uh this year purchased uh new material in that uh supplementary material for that course as recommended by the teachers. Included in my report are also some noncore uh current recent purchases. Uh that's available on page 1.2 or page 79 of the board packet. Uh these are purchases in subjects like world language, music, health intervention, culinary, sociology and PE. Uh current initiatives and pilots. Another part of the u report that I've provided for you. Um these should also be familiar uh to you. Um ethnic studies. Um we launched this course in 2526. The text that I just referred to, the supplementary text is voices. Uh that was something new that we purchased this year. Uh personal
finance, we will be reviewing instructional materials for the personal personal finance course for our course implementation in the 2728 school year. Uh this year we also piloted um new TK we are piloting new TK curriculum. Uh you heard from Miss Hamami that they have used Frog Street as an adopted curriculum, but the piloted curriculum that we are using right now that we're piloting is uh called Wonders and we selected that and um the teachers that you saw earlier tonight were part of that selection committee. Um uh we um looked at a few other curricula. Um creative curricula was one and CKLA and from that they unanimously chose Wonders. Um so they're practicing that right now. Um health education curriculum you may recall positive prevention plus being presented here. Um and as I mentioned we will
be piloting algebra geometry and algebra 2 texts aligned with the 2023 math framework um next year. Uh this is another uh this is just a graphic that I I use my Crayolo markers to uh put together for you. Um and uh it was it's just a depiction of table 1.4 in the board report. Um took me a long time to make make sure that I colored uh inside the lines. Um actually, you know, I my friend AI helped me out. Um I put the uh table 1.4 in there and it produced uh this slide very much better than I could ever do on my own. and it gives you a three-year glimpse of the initiatives we're anticipating. Um many of those that I've already uh mentioned in in this report. Um for example, next year
we'll be in year two of the EL education implementation. We're anticipating piloting material for our high school math classes. We'll begin reviewing materials in elementary science and personal finance as we look to pilot and adopt in 2027 and 2028. And those are just some of the things that um we are looking forward to uh in coming years. And last slide um what are our next steps? We need to review potential instructional materials for personal finance and other upcoming adoptions. We need to continue monitoring state adopted frameworks and materials. Uh we need to plan professional development aligned with new pilots and adoptions and we need to bring recommendations for adoption to the board in future years. Thank you very much. >> Thanks. >> Thank you Dr. Hagquist. >> And your coloring was excellent. Um, we will
go out first to public comment on this agenda item. Is there anyone wishing to address the board in person or online? Okay. No one for public comment. Um, with that, I will bring it back to the board um for any discussion or questions about the presentation. Trusty Wax, go ahead. >> Thanks for the presentation. Um, in terms of piloting, how do you like there are some classes that get the adopted curriculum and then you use the pilot or how do how do you pilot, I guess? >> So, pilot is just our our process of um testing the curriculum curriculum out before we actually uh bring it to the board for adoption. And so we'll contact several different publishers. Uh for example, our most recent one was the TK pilot. Um we reviewed curricula. We brought
three uh creative curriculum CLA and Wonders to the table. Oh, and Frog Street to the table. And um we've reviewed all of those. We weigh them against the standards. We have a rubric that each of the teachers fill out. Um and then we have discussions around the curriculum. um and we kind of rate them on scales and we decide um which one we want to maybe pilot um and it it just so happened that this uh decision was unanimous and actually last year's EL education uh adoption was unanimous so I've been been very very lucky we haven't been divided on many of those curricula and then we spend time with the curricula for example right now um we are piloting the health education curriculum positive prevention plus And even though we brought it to board
last year, some of those PE and health teachers haven't been able to use it until just now. They're they're doing it right now. So, they've sent out the letters and they're they're implementing and then we'll bring them back together for another evaluation to uh gain a gather a little feedback. We get student input um and and um and then we recommend to the board. Sorry, but I mean like for a TK adoption it's in it's piloted in every TK class. >> Yes. >> I mean >> it is but that's not always the case with um with our pilots. So we don't always pilot like for example you know we don't always pilot in every single class. We had a large percentage of the teachers at the elementary level pilot the EL education curriculum but not
every teacher. >> I had one more question. Um maybe you don't know maybe it's impossible to say but like the timelines in terms of adopting curricula or curriculum is that is it basically the same time frame or like the same frequency as before LCFF or is it more frequent less frequent? >> That's a great question. I don't really have a good answer for that. um in our district. I've only been doing this, this is my second year in this role, so I don't have a great idea of like how often. I do have some back information. Um but we all I can say is we are we've been we've kept very up to date and that's what I tried to showcase on the slide with all of the current years of purchases. um and director
Rogamin who was in my role before me there was a lot of uh purchasing happening to make sure that we had u current you know up-to-date curriculum so um I I can't answer whether that's more or less than years and years ago >> okay clerks and then trusty >> um is there a um formal way that that teachers can bring forward suggestions for curriculum needs or do you how do you uh work that >> that they def they typically come to me through this the the sites and through the departments. So usually it's in grade at the elementary school it's usually grade level collaborative teams at the middle school and high school it's usually departmental teams that um are constantly discussing you know the curriculum and the standards and through that process um they'll give
feedback to the site admin and it eventually lands on my desk and so it's kind of a a a process of yes we know that the math frameworks were just published in 2023. are you having those discussions in your department? What are you doing to that toward making sure that we're aligned and current? And then it comes back to me. So, it's a little bit of a back and forth between the departments, the administrators. >> And um second question, um how did books for the library get chosen and who chooses them? >> That was uh our librarian. >> So now who will do it? >> District librarian. So that's something that we are there. There was actually a library meeting today that um I was unable to attend that meeting because I was at uh
Forest Grove Elementary with the um with the EL people. So th that library staff is getting together. We we are my department is intending to uh be at every single one of those library meetings and to play fill that role of uh considering the changes that we've recently made. So that's uh something new um in our department. >> Just to add to that though, I mean the the teachers at the school sites are very much involved and have always been involved in that process in giving input as well, you know, to the librarian. Um and then ultimately it's approved by the site administrator of every site as well, right? It's not just librarian acting in isolation or the the the media library tech acting in isolation. It's really with collaboration and input from the staff
and then coming together with a >> Yes. I um I saw something on the LCAP that mentioned library and so I was just wondering like how does that um yeah how does it come through you or um how does it get you know determine that oh there's these new novels we you know who decides what new novels to put in or or other kind of curriculum that is appropriate for >> uh you know I can speak to that a little as an English teacher, a longtime English teacher at the high school. Um, so we would be constantly circulate through new text and having discussions about what are some new possibilities within our department or what are some texts that would support what we're studying. Um, and so those types of communications would be moved on
to like Dr. Adamson just mentioned to the librarian and they would look into purchasing they would work with the curriculum department and that's where you'd see the LCAP supporting uh the purchase of those materials you >> trusty you thanks for the presentation and for adding a little AI that's good um so I know that you get feedback from the teachers as they're implementing uh the new curriculum Um, and I'm wondering what the if you're also getting student feedback or you're getting student feedback through the teachers. >> Abs. Yes, we are getting uh we do we do seek student feedback. Um, that was a big part for example of our e adoption. I still have like a big stack of literally student letters that were like we love that, you know, there was um a lot
a lot. And so we go out and we we ask the students about those things too. I I was able to in prior adoptions I um when I was at the high school serving as a TOSA I sat in with uh director Rogamin uh when we were looking at the science textbooks and so we'd have student committees and then they would look at various texts and they would um provide their input and that would be considered in the decision-making process. >> Okay. And then after um so now that things have been implemented and it's happening, are you still receiving student feedback as far as if um students are performing as well as they were with I mean it's hard because you have to adapt as as history changes, you have to keep up with it.
As science changes, you have to keep up with it. Um but I also know that with new text, it's sort of um delivered in a new way as well. So, I'm just curious about if the students are receiving the delivery of that information. >> That's a great question, >> in a way that's guess easy for learning or easy for absorbing, >> fun, relevant, engaging, engaging, all of that stuff. That's a great question. Um, recently I've been in the classrooms uh for my LCAP uh input meetings with the students. So, I've been to every site so far. I still have a few more visits to make. Um but uh one of the questions that we ask is about the curriculum and uh whether they see themselves like are they seeing themselves reflected in the curriculum that
they're studying? Tell me a little bit more. And so we do a little bit of probing into like what is their experience especially if it's a new curriculum like the one that we're you know piloting right or that we're implementing right now um at uh the elementary level. And then this is I guess the second part of this question is um do we look at this could be hard to do but looking at GPA as we implement new curriculum and looking at how it's being received by students. Are we sort of watching grade levels? grade levels, not meaning the actual physical grade level, but you know, the level of um if someone's GPA has dropped since the new implementation, or if let's say the average of the senior class in 2025 was 3.2. Well, now
this year's average is looking like 3.0. Is that something that's looked at as far as um I don't know, just Does it make >> So that's a great question as well. I mean >> to make sure that we're sending that that they're receiving the information >> fully. >> Yeah. I what I what I think I hear you saying is like >> we're implementing something new, right? What are we using to what data are we using to um kind of assess the efficacy of the implementation? >> Thank you. Yes. You're like my AI. But well at the district level um we're constantly looking at the more macroscopic data. Um, one of the reasons why we have an emphasis on professional learning communities because what professional learning communities are all about is to for grade level teams,
for um, department teams to look more closely at the microscopic data like how is how is are these different imple implementation efforts affecting student performance in my classes? and the teachers have a much better indication of I think what you're asking but that data helps to feed the more macroscopic data. >> Perfect. Thank you very much for that. >> Trusty Wax >> going back just about the student feedback. Do um say it's a curriculum for a sophomore class. do the juniors who have already had that curriculum go back and take a look at the the proposed or options to see like if they would have liked it better, you know, because it's like what I know now or you know to get feedback from people who've already gone through some of the courses. >> So,
um to clarify like do if do the sophomores do students who have already been exposed to a curriculum or who have not been exposed? >> Yeah, who already have? So, you know, like if there's a biology textbook and someone finishes biology >> and did that does that cohort of students take a look at it to see if like yeah, this would have been more engaging or something. >> Yeah. Yeah. Of the new text of the new text >> does the new so basically weighing a new text that has been adopted. >> No. uh weighing a new text that is up for consideration that they've or a class that they've already gone through. >> So, for example, if they've >> Oh, I get it. They already completed the course, they had their old textbook, but then
saying, "Hey, what this new textbook reverse?" >> That's my AI. >> That's great. There's some good AI right there. I get it. So you're asking about student input and whether uh we are using uh I think um purposive sampling Elliot you know when we are bringing those student teams in right are we using just random random students to come in and look or students that have had a class that might be more informed and maybe better able to provide an opinion about uh the potential pilot. Correct. >> Yeah. Yeah, I was I wasn't considering random kids. I was just I I was thinking that you were sampling kids who were going to have that curriculum, but yes, the second part of your your restatement is is what I was wondering. >> Yeah, I think um
it's definitely students who are in those classes. Um I recall the the the meetings that I have been in. Um I'm I'm thinking about the science adoptions that we had students in those science classes who had exposure to that science curriculum uh give input to um to that. >> I think just to add to that would be you know the the whole idea of the pilot is that you know students are engaged in the actual instructional piece of it. So I think you know giving students a book to look at you know there wouldn't be that same level of engagement and understanding. Um and then that just that reminder that you know the the books that we adopt are that they're tools right they are tools to help for our teachers teach the standards. The
standards are ultimately what drive the instruction and the content that that is being delivered. Um the you know how our teachers use those tools right is really dependent on you know how effective the instruction can be. That's a that's a wonderful point and that's a point that I have reiterated with our our pilot teams and our um teachers that are implementing is that there's curriculum and then there's instruction. And in our district, what we want to pride ourselves in the most is the instruction. We have just incredible educators that you can give them any curriculum that is um a quality curriculum and they're going to um do wonders with it. And that I didn't mean to use a pun there, but that was an accident. >> Thank you, Dr. Hackquist. Um, if there are no
further questions or discussion from the board, this is an information item. I don't believe there's any direction to be given other than keep up the good work and thank you for keeping us informed. >> You bet. >> Um, that is the last substantive item on our Oh, wait. We have to do future agenda items. Future agenda items. Dr. Adamson. >> Yes. as well. We any any requests for future agenda items from the the board. Um I know that we you know obviously have our um the one that's still on there is that request for additional fiscal resources and uh we will be bringing that forward at a uh future meeting and actually to add it to I think we're looking at um early May uh May 7th will you know be added. So I'll also
add that as the exact topic to it. But, you know, our whole 5-year plan is something that we presented at the last meeting and, you know, that all of those topics you will see on, you know, future agendas um to be sure we address each one in that timeline. >> Thank you. Um, with that, any public comment on our future agenda items? No one coming forward in the room and no one raising their hand online to add more items to the agenda. Um we are then going to with that I think >> yes >> superintendent um we asked if the um student board rep if they had any agenda items would you run that by them for next >> Absolutely. We'll make sure we include that. I think when we meet with them before the
next meeting, we'll ask that as we can. Yeah, we can email them. >> Even before would be good so they have some time to think about it and discuss it with their classmates. >> Yeah, thank you for the reminder. >> Um, with that, we are going to adjourn back to close session and take up the remaining items on our close session agenda. A, B, and E, and potentially one more on C. And we will be back after that to report out any actions taken by the board in close session. So I imagine um we'll adjourn and most will not be rejoining us for the announcement. So yeah. Okay. We are reconvening in open session to report out after close session and I will give that report now. With regard to item A, negotiations, collective bargaining
session planning and preparation with the PGTA, information was received and direction was given. With regard to item B, collective bargaining session planning and preparation with CSEA, we had no new info on that item. Um, with regard to item C, public employee discipline dismissal release leave and complaint information was received by the board. And with regard to the last item, um, item E, superintendent goals midyear check-in, I guess we can say information was received and to be >> and direction was given and to be continued. Um, >> love that. >> So, we look forward to future discussions. And with that, our next special board meeting is March 26th for governance and our next regular board meeting is April 9th, 2026. And good night everyone.
