013some time to truly be able to recognize the service and the work of our two outgoing trustees uh trusty Swanson and trusty Swanson no relation right but before I do that again I just want to say congratulations to uh trusty wax and trusty shamas uh we are just thrilled to have you on the board and you're going to hear a lot this evening about our conference and the time we spend together as a core governance team of six in Anaheim at the California Schoolboard Association conference um and it was just exactly as Dr gas said we got to see a little bit more firsthand about all those words that you talked about you know and the reason that you decided to want to be able to come and and join our board and run for

014this office uh we saw it in action uh your words are what you act out and what you truly believe and we got to see that firsthand so we truly are excited about having you on board congratulations again well at this time I'm I'm going to go ahead and move up to the front again but I am going to embarrass our two outgoing trustees and I know they're going to hate me for this and I am going to be asking each of them separately in a moment to come and join me at the front Podium so I I can say a few nice things about both of them so just be prepared for that and I'm going to ask Carolyn Swanson to come up front forward to come and stand with me at the FR

015so just G to give you a hug first because you oh all right well these have been just very you know Bittersweet and very high words for me to write and I you know really took a lot of time to reflect on my time together with you Carolyn over the past year uh and you know it starts with my uh coming to interview with you as as a board and really my interest in Pacific grow School District uh and once I was offered this position you in the role of president at the time were really the one who you know were my point of contact and you know we developed uh just a strong relationship from that first day and you were for me is such a a pillar of of of strength and courage

016right and you'll hear me you know mention that you know throughout what I say tonight as well it's not very long it's a page no it's one page well maybe a page and a half because it's larger font but there we go so I am going to go ahead and refer to my notes as I speak but just know that these are from my heart and I really did not I wanted to give this the recognition that it deserves uh and so you know just bear with me as as we work through this because there's a lot to recognize four years is a long time of service uh so once I'm I want to start by just saying as my honor to be here to be able to recognize you for those four years that

017you've given of service to our students and our families and our staff Karen and I can truly talk about your unwavering commitment that these courageous uh leadership and countless contributions that you have given to our community in your years serving on our board and they have left a lasting impact and will continue to have that impact long after uh you have stepped down from the board uh particularly in your role in that year of President the past four years have presented many challenges as we are all aware uh one of those including a pandemic that you led through uh once again with courage um with a steadfast uh commitment to the role and the responsibilities that you hold in that position handling very difficult situations with Grace and courage we're grateful for that steadfast Focus

018that you have given over the years uh truly with that focus and that passion on the betterment of our students always seeking ways to foster a nurturing environment in which every single student can Thrive you consistently approached every Challenge and opportunity with a commitment to ensure that every voice was heard embodying the values of inclusivity and respect on a personal note I do I want to just express my heartfelt gratitude for the role that you played during my hiring process I as president as I've said you were truly the main point of contact for me uh and provided that guidance and just a warm welcome uh to make me feel a part of this community even before I officially joined it and so I'm grateful for that I know that the superintendent search as well

019was was a difficult one there were countless extra hours uh that you you know had to take on as president during that time uh but you continue to lead through that with Grace and determination your efforts over the last four years to address challenges to Foster collaboration and Champion the needs of our students have not g gone unnoticed nor have the countless hours that I know you spend pouring through agenda items reports and packets to be ready to speak with knowledge and Authority on each of them all once again showing your commitment to the responsibilities that you carry in this role so behalf on I know of our board and our entire Community I extend our deepest thanks for your selfless service and know how much you appreciate and how Greatful we all are for

020that service and the time that you've given and the dedication I know that one thing that we did together last year as as a board uh is something that I hope that you can step away with with pride as we developed our core values together as we develop this sense of building this culture of we and you were a strong part of that on this board and I hope that you can walk away with just feeling a strong sense of accomplishment and through that process how we had that commitment to making sure every voice within our community Was Heard and included so with that I can honestly say Carolyn it's going to be it's bit as sweet to see you step down we know we're not saying goodbye to you we're saying goodbye to you

021from the board but we know that your service will continue you're going to have that you know extra time on your hands now which I know you're already going to have that fold in some way and uh we continue to know that you'll be a strong part of this community so with that I'd like to uh present you with a plaque to just commemorate your four years of service on the board uh we also have a lovely Orchid and a certificate that really uh reminds you of your uh your work in our culture of we and our Three core values so I'm going to present that to you now oh and we also have yes this is really important our our cap uh to trustee Carolyn which we went ahead and put on here no

022relation right to Brian Swanson we thought that was really important so you get to take that with you there we go back thank you for your incredible service thank you so all right I wonder if we could let's see um do a quick photo yes with the board as well to just come on forward to before we move on and it wasota got it another the round of applause for Koln well the next one to be embarrassed is of course our you know outgoing president Swanson so Brian I'm going to ask you to come up to the front and we're going to do this in a similar manner yes indeed I give you a hug [Laughter] too all right well here to it's my honor to be recognizing you this evening for what I would

023consider to be quite a an incredible nine years of service on our board Brian and when you think about you know just the vast uh experiences and and events that have occurred over that time span it's pretty impressive your leadership your dedication your unwavering passion for the work that we do for our students all of this has left an inable mark on the district which as I said for carollyn is going to leave a lasting impact on everything we do like Carolyn these nine past years for you I have presented many challenges Al leading through a pandemic which we all know the challenges that came with that and you two handled that with Grace and courage the nine years and in particular the past year as president you led with a SP of a spirit

024of collaboration of integrity and a genuine joy that come through in everything you do Brian for serving your students our families and our staff your ability to navigate challenges with optimism while keeping your constant focus on the well-being of our children children has been a source of inspiration to all those around you including me it's been just a privilege to spend and serve so closely with you this last year working as president and I just feel very fortunate that we've been able to get through a lot of things together much like your impressive love and knowledge of music you approached your responsibilities by seeking ways to promote Harmony discipline and creativity in every decision that you made while also reminding us constantly of the life lessons that we stand to learn from the beautiful and

025sometimes magical world of music if you know Brian at all there's always he always happens to he's able to apply a song to every situation no matter what it was it was inperson a conversation he's sending me a message an email a text he always manage to to add in at the end a song and sometimes I'd even get a little you know a recording of one of them to just brighten the day so those are important important moments whether through a thoughtful an an analogy or a sh or the sheer enthusiasm of the Arts you've shown how music is not just a subject that is a bridged but a bridged to understanding growth and connection and that's a gift and one that you have shared so freely with all of us on a personal

026note I appreciate the genuine enjoyment that you've brought to the time that we spend together as a board Your Enthusiasm what I would call jiv is infectious and I could share many examples but one that stands out for me is with us as a board last year uh where we were in San Francisco for for the California Schoolboard Association that last Friday we finished dinner there was a bowling alley across the road and it was Brian's idea you know what we all need to go bowling and we did and what an incredible bonding experience that was and that truly did it helped set the foundation for who we were as a team of sex and it was something we were able to refer back to throughout the year and that managed to just bring us

027all joy and we all got to see something unique in one another and it was it was wonderful and you know that was that was your idea so tonight on behalf of our board and our entire Pacific growth Community we extend our deepest thanks for your nine years of service your passion commitment and love for what we do will continue uh to resonate throughout the district like the lasting notes of a melody or perhaps even the repeated ping of the bowling ball as it hits the pins thank you for your thoughtful and valuable contributions for your leadership and you too right as I said to Karen at the end you were an absolute critical part of the work that we did in developing and coming together for our the building of our culture of we

028our Three core values and a part of that input that we were able to gather from our entire community and there too I hope that you are walking away with just a sense of Pride and accomplishment of the work that you've done we are absolutely grateful and very sad to see you they sck down and say goodbye but uh with that it is my honor to present you as well with a plaque but on top of the plaque we have uh obviously the the gavl H with the lavage that has to go with it which apparently is a term that made up it now is Right which really I found out from Brian is gavl spelled backwards right so the gav of theage M I'll let him explain all of that but this I think

029with it with your name on that and then of course I'll back and you too with your mug no relation n years you I'm going to invite the to come up once again to for a photo opportunity an as well I don't know how you're G to hold it because you a lot decide what you want in the photo we'll do the plaque okay we got very good oh oh yes we're gonna do yeah I'll I'll take that in a well I do know that we probably have some people uh who are either in the audience or definitely online I know Brian's daughter is online I got to speak with her a little bit Daisy she wanted to say some words but before we go to that I did want to give the opportunity to

030our Uh current board if you any of you would like to say anything uh for but either one of our for both of our outgoing trustees yes please um as a board I feel like we've accomplished a whole lot in two years um assuring a new superintendent is they say like the most important job you did and I have to say that feels like a huge accomplishment for us as a team and where we are today Brian thanks to you and your family for the n years of dedication and commun committed service to the district including a pandemic so add a few more years probably on that um thank you for sharing your passion for the Performing Arts with us and reminding us of the important role the Arts play in our schools and that

031there is a song as Dr Adamson said for everything um I wish you well in your next chapter and happy fishing sure okay I'll speak to Brian first and then I think we're doing both though right did you want to talk oops yep I was gonna say okay oh she was gonna be like yes no one said anything no exactly not gonna happen carollyn Swanson no relation um thank you to you and to your family for four years I hope they're online listening um you did an incredible job for the teachers and the students and the families of the district um thank you for saying and doing what you felt was best for all students and for their families um thank you for your leadership during your year as president it's been an absolute pleasure

032serving with you and now that you're gonna have more free time I think we should hit up some pickle ball so thank you so I'll I'll go to verse order just for parody's sake and start with Carolyn and just say again I know you don't want us to say much but I'm going to anyway a little bit um in many ways you know this probably but you are a huge reason that I'm on the board and so I really do want to thank you for your leadership and vision for the district your love for policy and willingness to teach about it to the rest of the board has been very unique and very also just enriching but also really being willing and able to engage in healthy discussion including embracing disagreement rather than than running

033from it so thank you so much for all you have done for the district and for us as a board and then Brian it's been great serving as clerk with you this past year might have had my arm Twisted a little bit to do that but it has also been great having your experience and I'd say most importantly your heart on the board um there's not many people that care as much as about this District as you do there are many times when we've wondered why something was the way it was and you had an answer based on your past board decisions and years of service and I'll just end with it is really hard for me to imagine not sitting here next to you on the dis so thank you okay well I have

034nothing prepared but that's probably not surprising uh Carolyn I'm going to start with you I can say I would not be sitting here if it wasn't for you and your support and your guidance you're the reason that I even discovered I wanted to run for the board so thank you for that and thank you for everything that you've given the time you've taken away from your family to do this you've made a huge impact and um we're gonna miss you on this board very much I'm gonna go on no I'm kidding I won't uh Brian I can't imagine how well I'm gonna have to imagine it but what this board's going to be like without you you're funny and relatable and wonderful and there's so many things about you that I'm going to miss um

035and I'll tell you more when we get on a boat and go fishing together okay that's coming I'll have to take some drama mean but that's okay I'll be there we go back away a long time you know um no I will say uh at a previous election uh or a previous candidacy uh Carolyn was the first person to reach out uh to kind of ask some questions about what I thought and from that moment it was very apparent that um you are so dedicated to your community and your family and really uh want to ensure uh the best for everyone um so it's um it's kind of incredible and beautiful to kind of uh transition onto this in your literal seat so I I appreciate your dedication um and your love for the community

036and then um chair Swanson or Mr Swanson uh has been incredibly helpful as a resource in kind of this transition um and always quick to ask if I needed anything or was confused about anything and so just personally I really appreciate all your help and um your years of service of course so thank you both thanks um Brian I think one of the major things that was so good about having you here was that you were this link this historical link for the board and that's very was I could see how helpful that was when we had so many new board members coming in plus hiring a superintendent and and as I know hiring a superintendent is very um time consuming and and there's a lot of scariness about it because such a big decision

037and um so I appreciate that you were there to be that historical perspective because I I know that that's so important and um I thank you for your time and your good-heartedness on this board and Carolyn I appreciate all the good questions that you ask I you know as most of the people who are probably in this room know that I've come to a lot of board meetings um so I you know I am very familiar with all these different subjects that have come up and the questions that you've asked Carolyn have been very thoughtful and comes from a place that maybe not everyone else would be coming from so those kinds of you know that's what makes individuals so good to be on the board because you all have different strengths and to bring

038them together is um you know a can be such a powerful force so thank you so much Carolyn I'll miss you on board meeting nights thank you all right well at this time I'd like to open it up for anyone in the audience who are family or friends who would like to uh say anything about either one of our outgoing trustees if there is anyone let's go ahead and move over to that i' appreciate that yes thanks leis Daisy you are muted am I can I say something sorry go ahead we can hear you now um Brian I don't just speak to you as my daughter tonight I speak to you as a member of the community who did actually read your election campaign and I want to thank you for your civil service for

039education and um your um your pursuit of bringing more love and empathy into the community and of course building the next Foundation I once asked you I've asked you several times I'm sure why do I have to go to school and why is it so important that I do that um and your response was education is the foundation for a great Community who else without education how else would we learn to read to write how would we how would we learn how to read like stop lights green means go stuff like that and I said well maybe the parents can teach you and he said what who would teach the parents and what if the parents are at work and your dedication to wanting to build that Foundation has not only been very present in

040my own personal life but that was a similar response about foundation and how that builds the Next Generation when I asked for your official campaign statement around the election time before you were first sworn in on the board I think that that love for wanting to make the world a better place and build up the Next Generation build up the next Community to be better smarter Kinder and more loving to than than the generations before us is very commendable and it's instilled um in me personally a commitment to of course in in music I love music as well building up the next generation of musicians and you've instilled that in me and I know um especially your messages of empathy and and really wanting to make an inclusive space for all no matter what they

041need and bringing opportunity to everyone was so important to you and you've instilled that in me and I know other members of this community so I would really like to thank you for your service and your role model to um just everyone and I appreciate how you had so much team support for when times were tough with everyone on the board everyone in the district and how you're just trying to make learning easier and making the job of teaching easier for the staff and the teachers in the district so thank you for your service and I hope uh if they're cookies they're good thank you Daisy it looks like we have one more speaker Sher D is online as well hi can you can you hear me we can hear you yes lovely um trusty

042Swanson I just um try not to get emotional I want to thank you for your unwavering commitment to Community High School um you would show up with a smile with cookies just an understanding of this program and who these kids are um and why this program is important there's really no one in this District who's had a greater impact on me personally or a program um as much as you have my dogs here offering me Comfort um you've offered so many words of encouragement to these kids uh I've been personable the way you just kind of sweep in and and offer yourself to anything that's needed I just there's no one like you and you will be so missed um you just get it right you just get it Brian and and words can't express

043um my gratitude so I wish you the best I hope you still come by and and I I thank you for all that you do thank you Sherry that's beautiful I think that that's everyone online Lewis is that correct yes okay I'm now going to open it up to anyone in the audience hello uh Debbie crle and um I wanted to be here tonight I wasn't going to cry but I might cry after that um to make sure that I want to honor you and let everybody know what so here I go what a selfless person you are selfless I'm make sure everybody didn't hear I say selfish because that you're total opposite of that and I don't think any the public really realizes that and you have dedicated your entire like I don't say

044life but you having dedicated so much to this board and um the five years of my nine years that I spent with you um that showed and these flowers are not for you these are for Ruth for the nine years that nice to see you hi um Carolyn congratulations four years and I know you were here for many meetings before that and there is a tremendous amount of time spent and uh I think uh the learning curve coming in is high and Steep and congratulations on on how you achieved and Brian nine years uh when I left I talked about 1956 as a turmoil year in education uh and the next one after that you know Brown versus the Board the next one after that was quite frankly uh Co and you weathered that storm

045and carried us through and helped us in and I I agree with what Debbie said you were one of the most selfless person persons people I've ever had the pleasure of working with congratulations thank you very much thank you both for your time on the board so R Community member thank you all for your service board it's a lot of work uh thank you Caroline for for your four years um a lot of work as as I just said and Brian I many of you like at home like you probably don't know that how how nice of a guy Brian is I mean there's been a lot of emotional turmoil up here and and he was often the voice of reason uh to pull us back in he always had a clear view of things

046and I really appreciate that uh he's a very eclectic man we've had many conversations on stump grinders retaining walls fishing music and and our community he really really does love this community he loves this District he continued to serve even when his children were no longer in the district and I mean that really says something um if you ever have an opportunity just to get to know the man behind the office I mean you would be blessed to do so he's such a wonderful man so thank you so much for your for your service and thank you for your friendship all right well I did want to give both uh Carolyn and Brian the chance to I speak so um Carolyn would you would you like to say anything your outgoing [Laughter] please hi thank

054and to the new board this is the last bit the new board some of you seasoned now seasoned some of you coming in and some of you returning you all know this is not a cakewalk there's a lot to get done in the coming years and not going to be easy it's been fun often but not always easy do what I am certain you will do focus on the kids do not lose sight of the fundamentals remember that Proficiency in Reading Writing math social sciences they are the ultimate building blocks and that we must Foster these skills in our young people our future depends on it their future depends on it and there you go thank you it's been an honor wow that was quite a list Brian he texted me today to say the

055list was getting quite long and yes it was and I told him that's a really good problem to have so wow I am going to invite everyone please stay on because uh we're hoping around a little after 6 we're going to break for a reception to uh really allow us to all come together and uh do one final uh goodbye to these two incredible individuals um but before we do that we have just a few items of business on the agenda um and so this first one uh is yes for us to now nominate our uh incoming and our new president who will serve for the the following year and so I'll be leading uh the actual nominations for this and we'll be very eager to be able to hand over the gavel to our

056incoming president once this is over because this is definitely not an area I'm comfortable with um okay so uh just a little bit of background information this is It's a one-year term uh we'll be accepting nominations from our trustees shortly uh anyone of our five trustees May nominate someone uh either someone else or themselves uh once we have all the nominations we'll go back and in alphabetical order we'll call for the votes uh the first trustee to receive a majority of the votes in this case it would be three will be selected for that office once elected as I said I will hand over the gavel uh before we do that though I'd like to just go to public comment do we have anyone online who would wish to speak to this item see no

057one uh anyone in the audience who would wish to speak to this item well it's my pleasure to go into the actual action then is there any nomination for the office of President I would like to make a nomination For Better or Worse of myself or president in the upcoming year Dr Hazen thank you any other nominations for the office of President all right well at this point we we have one nomination that would be uh Dr Eliot Hazen uh all those in favor of electing Dr Elliot Hazen for the office of president please say I hi hi hi I see five eyes that is a maor it uh it is my pleasure at this time to therefore announce our incoming president Dr Elliot Hazen congratulations after session and now I think I'm on the

058clock there's a hard tough act to follow Brian um but we have item D the election for a clerk to serve also for a one-year period again nominations do not need a second we'll open up first for public comment if there's anyone in the audience or online okay I'm seeing nobody like to open it up to see if anyone would like to nominate someone or themselves for clerk I will nominate myself for clerk for one year [Laughter] okay seeing no more nominations I think I'd like to put that forward to a vote so all those in favor of trusty McNary serving as clerk for the next year please say I I nobody opposed that passes 5- Z so we're done with item D let's hope we go through all the items this quickly next one

059is item e the appointment of our superintendent to serve as the secretary to the board one of the roles folks might not know that Dr Adamson plays but our recommendation is that the district as a whole recommends that the Board of Education appoint a superintendent to serve as the secretary so with this item this is item e for those following along um anyone have any public comment either here in person or online seeing none Bard I'm going to try to give you guys all just a quick look please shake your head or not if you have anything you'd like to say this if not I think it serves up for a motion if anyone would like to make a motion uh I will move to appoint Dr Adamson as um the secretary to the board

060and I'll go ahead and second that and so with that we'll do another vote all in favor of appointing Dr Adamson as secretary I I anyone opposed okay pass this 5- z i I should have said sorry moved by Laura onar in second myself and then item F and I think this is going to be a presentation though from yourself Dr Adamson is I correct on the determination of times stes and locations to regular meetings that is correct yes so I am uh presenting to you an item that really just speaks to uh the business that we conduct as as a board on how you know often we meet uh and on what days and and at what time so it is my proposal at this time to really maintain what our you know current

061policy states and that is that we hold our general meetings on the first Thursday of every month uh with the third Thursday serving as a special meeting uh with the exception of there are certain months of the year uh I know April comes to mind as one uh where we will have two because of the uh budget and the alcap process uh but other than that that really is the proposal uh and you'll also see that yes we typically you know have that uh decision to uh to go dark in July to you know have one month off right as a board uh but my recommendation is to keep this as is uh with our starting time of our regular meetings at at 6:30 great and again the time I'll hopefully always remember but if

062not I'm sure many on the board will remind me for public comment and in the future if you guys have public comment please feel free just to come on up or raise your hand online a little bit early so we know and if there's any public comment on this item F no one online no one in person um board anyone like to comment on changing frequency or keeping the frequency the same quiet bored I like it um so far I'm sure there'll be more noise coming um but no discussion um I will go ahead and make a motion to adopt item f as presented do I get a second I'll second okay uh moved by myself and then seconded by trusty otmar all in favor please say I hi hi hi passes 5 Z so

063we're on to G hopefully leaving a lot of time for our um festivities to come so this is resolution 1143 designating authorized agents to sign School orders again a routine item we need to do every year to make sure business gets done so Dr Adamson it's you again I think yes and this again is is pretty self-explanatory uh because we do have now a new incoming uh president and a new incoming clerk uh who are typically the two individuals on the board who sign any of our uh documents and and more formal and legal documents uh it is my recommendation that we pass this resolution to allow for those two individuals uh to sign those documents do we have anyone in the public that would like to speak or anyone online seeing no one I'll

064go ahead and open up to the board again no head nods makes it easy so again I'll offer it up anyone like to make a motion for item G also move excent can I get a second thank you perfect that's what I Wasing for okay so um moved by trust McNary second by trustee shamas all in favor please say I I I I any opposed passes 5 zero and with that we have finished up our president hayen I just realized that when I put forward the nominations for President we did not do a someone to you know do a second uh and to you know um start that voting process so it says nominations do not need a second on there but way they do anyway just to be safe right well oh we should

065still voted for I'm so sorry I go to do thatly thank you did great I want to sorry goodness Dr Adam son yes can you clarify um I think I'm confused whether a nomination does need a second or does not our agenda says nominations do not it it doesn't need it you're absolutely right so then I think we're good right with the process we did see this is why I am not serving as president all right that's good job guys okay so with that I will go ahead and I think I have to gavel out right and adjourn for our festivities and I hope the cookies are good oh and Dr Hazen I think we'll just need to identify what items will be discussing in close session man so bad at my job already okay

066so the close section topics we're going to talk about um number one is negotiations collective bargaining session planning and prep with the pgta for 2425 um gov code 354 9.1 and then negotiations collective bargaining session planning and preparation with the ca for 2425 same government code and item three is Public Employee discipline dismissal release relieve leave complaint code 54957 conference with legal council on anticipated L litigation pursuant to government code 54956.9 and then a liability claim um government code 95 so with that is there any public comment on closed session topics either here in the room or online I'm seeing none so with that now we can adjourn to close session and festivities we are reconvening an open session at 7:01 and I'm going to start by reporting action taken and close session because we

067have a full agenda and some important things coming soon so for items one and two we're going to do that after the Open session so those were not addressed item three I'll double check but information was given item four uh anticipated litigation oah case 202 2 410141 the board voted 5 to approve the settlement agreement identified in Clos session and then for item five district liability claim case 644 266 the board voted for one to reject the claim identified in closed session so with that I would like to now invite our two newest trustees to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance if they're so willing thank you so much and I think we have again some fun ahead of us and I will hand over I don't know if you're presenting this or if

068Emily is but I'll Dr Adamson it's your floor oh well thank you so much president Dr Hazen that um sounds very wonderful to say uh and congratulations again well good evening everyone thank you all so much for being here this evening uh if you haven't heard it before when I I'll always start out by just telling you what a joy it is when we walk in here coming in from business that we've been conducting in close session to see students filling this room uh it just it brings joy to us and it helps serve as that reminder for us of our why so thank you for being here this evening to our students uh we're going to start out this evening as uh Dr Hazen said we have two presentations and the first one is

069from uh Robert down Elementary uh this has become just a new tradition for us this year uh that we try to start with at least one when we can we do two uh presentations to really highlight some of the incredible programs uh and some of the wonderful opportunities that we're making available to our students at all of our school sites uh and this evening uh principal Brownfield was kind enough to uh share and and suggest that uh we do a highlight on Robert Down's Garden program so we have students we have coordinators here but I'm going to invite uh principal Brownfield to the front to uh talk a little bit bit about this program uh and introduce those present here so thank you principal Brownfield good evening superintendent president Hazen board members members of the

070public we are really proud my name is Emily Tai Brownfield I'm the principal of Robert down Elementary and I'm here I'm proud to present to you the Robert down Elementary Garden program but I will not be doing a lot of the talking today um I will be passing it over to our amazing Garden coordinators um I'm going to be asking them to come up right now and then I will also be asking our students to come up so Heidi Feldman and Keith Larson have served as our Robert D um coordinator Garden coordinators they have been incredible in partnering together utilizing each other's gifts and strengths I also want to give a special shout out to Patricia Hamilton who has been um such an invaluable volunteer in supporting us with the garden as well would also

071like to introduce to you Romy triplet who is a second grade student Vivian triplet who is a fourth grade student and they happen to be the granddaughters of Miss Heidi we will also have Charlotte Lurch and Henrietta Garcia who are fifth graders at roberttown and um although Estelle Ferrera and elod Lazar aren't here this evening they did help me to record some video and I'm here to present to you you just an example of the FAA beans that they have been growing so at this time I'm going to pass it over to Miss Heidi thank you principal and thank you for all your support you give to the Garden it's invaluable thank you um thank you for letting us present today we're um a little bit out of our element usually we're in the garden

072so I'm looking a little bit like I do in the garden and we brought some Little Treasures from the Garden today um so I just wanted to give a little background of myself and then maybe Keith wants to talk a little bit so I definitely owe my involvement in the garden to these two lovely girls because I came to one of the parent meetings and at the end of the meeting they said we really need a garden coordinator we've been looking for one there is nobody and that was my job before I retired many years before I was the um environmental educator at the landfill and some of the old teachers when my tours and everything so anyway I felt called upon so the next day I called principal Keller and I said I could

073volunteer and then it went from there so I started by myself a little bit and then I had a little setback um with my family but then I came back to the Garden the garden was in horrible shape due to covid and everything no coordinator for a couple years and then I asked my good friend Keith Larson he's a garden buddy of mine to join me so that was a really good call on my side thank you for doing that yeah so we work as a team and we'll both talk a little bit what our jobs are in the garden and what we do um Keith do you want to say hello hi my name is Keith Larsson I'm known as farmer Keith at the school and uh I was a farm supervisor for eight

074years and I really loved working with the children and the staff um it's very rewarding the program is so valued there and U it's it's wonderful to see the happiness of the children we get to share things with them that they haven't done before they have a lot of them haven't um planted seeds before a lot of them haven't cared for plants or harvested uh there was one boy that hadn't even eaten a tomato before so that was something um so it is very wording I'm and thank you for H Heidi for bringing me on and um and the children teach me a lot too about things they're their Wonder um when they see roots on a plant or something they haven't done or seen before so and uh we we provide uh a couple

075boxes of lettuce usually a week for the uh cafeteria when it's in season I see Robert there and I'm really glad that the um uh lunch program there the the uh the the lunch service people and Robert were very open to having the produce from our garden served in the cafeteria it's really neat for the kids to see that so thank you okay thanks again Keith and the kids when farmer Keith is not in the garden he was out for something where's farmer Keith there right away want him there okay um so when we first started in the garden we were very thankful because the garden has a great beginning it has a good infrast structure if you haven't seen it there's 12 race beds there's a beautiful shed there's a greenhouse outside there's a

076little um butterfly house where they actually used to raise butterflies and now we use it as a quiet place cu no more butterflies allowed so we call it Kazam Mari posa and we have little chairs in there and kids can bring books in there and so for a little quiet where teachers can be in there so you know that's a nice little Hideway for in the garden and we really like that part of it so it did have a good beginning we have rain barrels that are filling up as we speak and that's really good so we first started by raising the the cleaning the beds and uh and then we announced the program to the teachers and I have some handouts for you where you'll see all the materials that we gave to the

077teachers and then the teacher started signing up and now we're happy to say that all the teachers and all the students are participating in our program so they come once a month and they all get a rotation and they get the schedule before and and a reminder and they're all very happy to come so our goal for the garden basically is to teach gardening skills teach healthy eating Teamwork because the student always have to work together somehow and then use of the garden for various academic studies um we have a garden curriculum so Keith basically does the Hands-On stuff you usually see him with dirty fingernails and stuff yeah yeah and uh he's out there you know directing the kids to do this and that one little boy asked is this child [Laughter] labor so

078yes we let them do the work because we want them to have ownership of what they plan and it starts with so preparation seats um plants um sometimes they take the plants the seats home and grow stuff like this we had like 200 of these coming back to the Garden so we have a lot and uh then of course they harvest and do other work in the garden weeding they love weeding and cleaning so the kids are really into all those activities and then my part more or less is to do the curriculum enhancement um which is what I did for my job originally so there's a little chart in your handout that shows all the curriculum you can do in a garden which is amazing so for example math um we measured all the

079boxes that's in your packet two the kids um figured out the square footage and how much we could grow so that was a good math um exercise we do science the worms are good right girls yeah um today we distributed worms in the boxes that was cool um seed propagation a lot about seeds steel studies harvesting seeds in the garden we studed the soil we study the microclimate we do art um chalk art we did scarecrows in the garden and we do literature um this month we're reading this wonderful book Miss rampi and it has to do with loopin seats and Patricia our friend brought nice seats from the community garden that we had growing there so right now we're planning loopin and we're going to distribute them in the neighborhood because this is all

080about do you remember what she said what miss rumus it was the third thing that her grandfather told her in this book and it's to make the world more beautiful so it's a wonderful message and it connects with the garden and then we do cultural studies as well and then Keith do you want to talk about the healthy eating a little bit that we encourage uh well sure so when we're there uh in the garden we usually hard Harvest uh what we're growing at the time and right now uh we had a nice crop of carrots uh earlier we had in October we had a good crop of tomatoes that we were uh the kids could eat in in the garden and also we had enough to to give to their cafeteria um right now

081we have kale growing we have um uh Roma we have some leaf lettuce and this is even better than the agriculture around here because they stop seeding around October and everything goes to Yuma Arizona so we were kind of doing an experiment to see if we could keep things going uh it's slower so we don't really have enough for the cafeteria right now but we have enough for Al's Breakfast for the homeless and in the springtime when we're really rolling we have enough for teachers and we give to the um uh Senior Center so the kids uh when they're with us um Heidi uh we the kids Harvest lettuce like you see here or whatever we're growing and then they have some ran dressing so they have a healthy snack when they're with us once

082a month so yeah cucumbers cucumbers sugar snaps yeah so we have a stuff is still growing amazingly now yeah okay so um just for a little um research Columbia University found that in schools that provide frequent highquality opportunities for handson nutrition learning students eat up to three times more fruits and ve vegetables at school lunch so this is a Colombia University study so this is really um a very good connection from the garden with the kids working in the garden and then eating their healthy food so and sorry so yeah I found that with my own family that the kids came home and they wanted lettuce and ranch dressing right yeah just like they get at school nowadays yeah so anyway that's research really backs up what we're doing and it says when children spent

083weeks or months growing their food their food which they plant they feel proud of and connected to it which is key to trying new dishes with an open mind so that's really cool okay so anyway we um talked about sharing our food and what we do and so there's a good social um aspect to it anyway we close our garden classes with a pledge to planet Earth that um I used in my old job and that I like to say with the children because it make it's a promise that they will take care of our planet so I feel that's a strong link with the garden I'm very thankful to have this opportunity to work with my friends and the children all the kids and uh thank you all so we're going to pass around

084a little taste you guys want to help Ro first so we took some video of students um in the garden and what they liked about the garden I like planting things because um after we sometimes get to taste everything to see if it's good so that was elodie and um Estelle who weren't able to make it this evening and then we have we go on to hi my name is Henrietta and I'm in fifth grade and I'm just going to talk a little about um this amazing Garden um so I really love this amazing Garden because it's really educational and it can teach kids about how plants grow and how to harvest and all that stuff I also my second thing I love about the garden is we get to harvest it and actually eat

085some of it and it goes part of it goes over to our um wonderful salad bar in our cafeteria which is really cool and the third thing I love about um this Garden is it's just a way to be outside and learn to grow plants and it's just really fun fun hi my name is Charlotte Lurch and the robber H down Garden is really fun cuz um everybody like gets together here and they can pick flowers and stuff and they can Harvest some fruits and vegetables and then like when everyone comes together it's like really fun and exciting and you can there's like lunch you can do here and you can just like some projects you can do here like some people like painted the walls at some point of time and there's scarecrow contests

086like in the fall so yeah that's why I love the garden okay I'm Heidi Feldman I'm the garden coordinator for Robert down school and I left being here with the children including my grandchildren and teaching the kids about all kinds of gardening and also working with the teacher on how they can use curriculum related information in the garden like doing art math science all kinds of different topics that are good for their curriculum um we can teach in the garden so I especially like that part of it hi my name is Keith Keith Larson I'm known here as farmer Keith and it really gives me a lot of joy to see the happiness in the garden expressed by the children they love to water and plant and and they find a real connection with their

087food by caring for it and then seeing it in their lunchroom at lunchtime so uh and I also like the fact that this space is used for so many different uh reasons and as our principal said it's used as a calming space and I really uh that's that's really the the focus here I think it's a calming space and we are learning about food and it's just all good hi my name is Charlotte L and Lon on their worm compost everything everything Are there specific things you like about the [Music] garden this is Connor of the that often comes to the Garden to C and everything is your favorite part of the garden what is this so you how he uses the moisture sensor in a moment what is this called what is that dry

088it's dry wet wet wet what does that that do does that check how moist the soil is what does that device do he's checking the wall so go on to the next one um Connor had me take a picture of this little animal in the fairy garden for you guys to see and then there's a picture of farmer Keith share sharing with the students the importance of watering and how to water um I'm going to pass the mic over to Henrietta and to Charlotte who um they had collected some quotes from students um about the garden hi everyone as you can see students really enjoy our garden and here are some quotes we collected about otter at our school so first from kindergarten here's some quotes planting seeds and eating fresh salad are my favorite

089I like eating yummy Foods in the garden here's first grade I enjoy planting and eating the foods in the garden I enjoy planting and eating and caring for the plants here are some of the second grade quotes I love picking and eating tomatoes and peas I really like the part when we get to harvest here are some third grade quotes we always get to eat fresh food my favorite thing to do is play with the fairy garden here are some of the fourth gr grade quotes I like watering the plants and putting the moisture sensor in and then finally I'd like to close out with two of our fourth grade students who wrote some poems about the garden that they would like to share with you Stella um I will a poem about our garden

090and it's called rhd Garden our garden is so fun we always love to go and play all day the tomatoes are so sweet and the lettuce is the best but my favorite part are the garden teachers Mr Keefe and Miss Heidi when we're in the garden it feels like we have all day but when it's time to go we remember we will come again one day now the winter is gone sadly spring is here happily see you again see you again winter wel come again spring in my garden flowers are blooming trees are growing leaves are growing back in the tree apple trees woke up and stretch the son gave the chry blessing pink makeup there are cold things in my garden in the spring thank you so much for your support and for helping

091us to bloom to use we have to make sure they don't you know poke their eyes out but yeah and I wanted to thank kren s too who's here who's our volunteer here and Faithfully shows up on weekends to water and uh basically support our garden thank you kist okay we have some time out oh my goodness I just want to give another word of thanks to all of you but stay up here because we have certificates we want to give particularly to our coordinators and then to the students who presented here this evening cuz it takes courage and they from what I understand is they were thrilled and and excited and and quite happy to H share their their names uh to come here to be with us this evening but I definitely would

092like to present our two culture of we certificates which are significant of uh your pivotal role in the work that we do as a district in creating and building this culture of we Pacific Grove unified school district uh and embodying our Three core values of safety belonging and prosperity and so farmer Keith I love it and Heidi F would you please come forward to accept these certificates on behalf of our board and the district thank Youk you and then I do have certificates here for the students I may have one or two more uh which the ones that I um of students who are not here I will give to your principal to be sure that they receive them but um there's some last names here that I'm not going to be able to pronce

093and I don't want to you know butcher the name so I I'll go ahead and just say first name so Leah where's Leah congratulations Leah thank you for Stella henrya and then I'm gonna have you all stay up here because we're GNA do a group photo in just a moment Charlotte Charlotte and then let's see I have here lo I don't think is here r that's beautiful and Vivian congratulations I'm gonna ask all of you to come up to the front for a picture with our bird uh before we go into our second uh presentation so just come and stand in front of the Das if you wouldn't mind and as they're taking their their places um again just to our two coordinators I myself have been a part of that and and visited your

094garden multiple times and I'm just so grateful and what delicious um treats you brought for us this evening thank you par here e bugs but of time and move on to our second presentation that we have this evening uh and it is my pleasure to invite to the front our high school principal principal om uh this uh as I said earlier with principal Brownfield uh principal omir was equally as uh enthusiastic about offering one of his programs at the high school uh and given the fact that they have just uh actually performed their play uh he thought it would be a wonderful idea to have our High School uh performance our theater art student I come forward to do a little yet of the play that they have uh been performing and having so many

095audiences enjoy the last few weeks uh and it's the play I believe uh she kills monsters but to talk more about this and present our students I'm going to turn it over to you principal Amira thank you Dr Adamson again uh Greg principal Pacific Grove High School and I I want to uh Proclaim publicly that in the 31 years that I've been uh attending various K through2 uh theater Productions musical Productions I I really don't know that I've enjoyed a production more than I enjoyed this one just incredible it was I I had such a great time um and I I'll say no more about that I I will Echo what Dr Adamson said we were we were walking around a few weeks ago and I was I was gushing about uh the performance and

096uh we just kind of joking said what we should come to the board and and reenact a a scene and here we are re reenacting a scene so uh without further Ado I'd like to call up um Aaron Vasquez our our teacher uh produ executive producer Mentor Guru thespian thank you very much Aon and I I will ask Aon to give a give a brief synopsis and and make some introductions hey everybody um just want to say we have four people here there's probably anywhere between 30 and 35 people that work to put this together students that do that they volunteer their time uh even the stage crew in the back countless hours uh putting this together um we spend hours putting this together we create a a a wonderful space for ourselves so that

097we can share a really cool message with the world and I just encourage everyone to come on out um whenever we have shows um it's always a magical thing if you never been to C wi theater it's it's its own thing and it's a special thing um it's wonderful our little place there um I'm gonna let the director student director Willow uh come and discuss the actual aspects of the scene we're about to watch um it's it's their Vision I hold the space and I just make it work for them um it's really a lot of their work and well what do I do anyways come on okay um hi everyone hello uh board uh my name is Willow hell I am currently a senior at Pacific o high school and I am the director

098of she kills monsters I to give a little background on me I have been doing theater since s more year so this is my third year and final year of doing like being a part of drama class and doing these Productions I've done many before and when I'm not acting I am helping out backstage or in this case being a director um this cast and crew has put a lot of their work as Mr vquez said they've been working on this since August leading up to our performances um in November so around like 3ish months um it's just it's been incredible to work with such amazing people all of them are which like people I know am like friends with and I'm glad that some of the cast can be here to so support me

099and also for me to support them and we are incredibly honored to be invited here to show you what like seawing theater and really all of Pacific Grove like theater can like show and portray their amazing talent um I'm going to give a bit of before we have our actors come and reenact this scene I'm going to give a bit of context so we know like what is happening up until this point so this show takes place in um Ohio in the 1990s 1995 to be exact it follows um main character aans EV Agnes Evans played by Owen Montgomery over over there in the middle um who she is a girl in high school and her sister Tilly Evans played by Olivia angle horn unfortunately dies in a car crash which was introduced early on

100the two siblings kind of always were different they were diverse Tilly being into more nerdy things like Dungeons and Dragons hence the show and anus being to more typical stereotypical like things like music and High School in cheerleading um once a year essentially passes and we see um Agnes go into um The Dungeons and Dragons like store to talk to uh Chuck bigs played by Max Degan over there to essentially be like hey I found this this was my sister's I want to play this game it was a d Dungeons and Dragons um game that she made course self and essentially this story transports between high school and the actual Dungeons and Dragons World itself um we get to meet the party played by like cast members who are currently not here but party members

101are like um orus played by Warren frzn uh we have Lilith played by Eleanor lions and we have um kiai dark Walker who's played by Cory Gaylor uh essentially Agnes is kind of thrown in for looping like this is what Dungeons and Dragons is I can't believe my sister was like into this sort of thing and this show is very comedic but as we get further on into it it becomes less it there are deeper topics and emotions that are underlined and or like undertones in the show but it comes out the more time as we progress um we even get to see um a scene that was really powerful and I gave warning to for the content that happens in it essentially Tilly Evans gets bullied um for potentially being queer which I put

102the warning of that our school wants to provide a safe space for everyone no matter their gender sexuality or race and I thought that was very important to say because we don't want to like of course advocate for that sort of thing we want to show that theater and our school wants to provide a safe place for everyone um and that scene essentially has Agnes being like I thought I knew my sister I thought I knew who she was but I'm not even sure who she like her sexuality and just her as a person and Agnes truly realizes how much she doesn't know who Tilly was when she was alive and how she's missed essentially an important part of her life before she could even get to Rel know her um this scene to lead

103up to that this scene basically is Agnes and Tilly talking about the sort of thing and of course Chuck who is controlling or like basically playing out these characters doesn't know how to answer because he's not Tilly he knew Tilly but he's not her so he obviously doesn't know how to always like talk or portray certain characters he just has to go about this and they essentially talk about like what happens why why were like Tilly why were you bullied did this actually happen in real life because we find out essential part is that this game is essentially based off of her life and it's her like autobiography kind of before she dies so with that context of all of that I would like to um have our actors portray this is like end of

104act one for um the show so give it up for them okay so how' it go with the evil churos stutes what did it look like did that stuff actually happen like in real life I was a dorky 15-year-old Who Loved D inde what do you [Music] think why did you have to make up a game to tell me all this I didn't want to tell you any of this if that's what you're wondering this game was supposed to be private I met Lily by the way the the real one oh yeah she's gay isn't she maybe I don't know are you I don't know you know Tilly you can talk to talk to me about this sort of thing I I'm not her you know what I'm not her Chuck look I can only

105extrapolate so much but this is feeling a bit Blasphemous look do you mind I was talking to my sister look I'm all for role playing but this is a bit deeper than I usually get play the rooll cheuck Agnes what it there's something in here I think you should see do it in character Agnes Agnes do me a favor of course I wrot something for lilan here can you give it to her we didn't really choreograph how to end tonight did we again I wanted to just just Aon Mr Vasquez thank you so much for for your work your dedication uh actors just incredible job I had so much fun I just you know my my wife still uh is just beside herself making fun of me uh describe the the the the fun I

106had that evening so thank thank you so much and uh thank you for for for being here tonight well don't go anywhere yet because yes we have we want to just recognize your performance and your willingness to be here this evening as well but I I have not had the pleasure of seeing the play and wow I mean I think everyone in this room who hasn't just based on that was an excellent scene to portray but the emotion I mean I wow I felt it deep within my core right just how you acted that out that was so real um and wow I'm I feel really sad that I've not seen the play now but thank you all for coming forward and and sharing this with us this evening sharing your unbelievable talents I I'd

107like to First recognize executive director eron Vasquez if you would please come up here to accept the certificate once again our culture of we helping build that culture of we and really embody our Three core values of safety belonging and prosperity and what better way to do it through uh the through the the Arts and the ability that you give for our students to be able to you know just share their voices in such a unique and creative way so thank you for that Mr vkus thank you very much and then while student director at how you spoke up here I felt like I was watching you know some show of ex ra and you know one of our our our Stars being and our prod you know professional producers being interviewed on on a

108film or or you know any kind of performance so Willow thank you please come on up and accept the certificate from us thank you and then I have for our three actors here this evening Owen Max and Olivia please come certificates aont with our board please come on up to the new one e okay whatever it was no I think we're done move to the first action right committee so we're opening now um our section on Communications and we're going to start with written Communications so this is where we and I will start this process with the basically written Communications that I've gotten up until this board meeting so it's been about two two and a half weeks but I may miss some because they went to our previous president Brian so I received few

109emails regarding our sex education curriculum regarding PE at TK for one of the elementary sites many vendors regarding the csba meeting a shout out for multiple employees in the district which I always appreciate getting and then support report for PG is a sanctuary City so I don't know if there were any other emails that folks received I think uh Beth and Mike you guys are off the hook this time um I also received a couple of different emails about the winter programming and big kudos to Mr Maser and I think that's all I have in addition and then at this point we now open up to board member comments and I'm going to skip mine since we've done a lot of talking today but I'll go down see if anyone else has any they'd like

110to present um I'm looking forward to working with all of us as a government's team and I'll leave it there because we have lots to do I just want to thank our superintendent for giving out those certificates I think it's so meaningful um to really give them that kind of pat on the back and will'll add to the resume thank you um I want to thank all the board members for um sharing their time and and expertise and welcoming us I think to the board I'm I'm really excited to start the work and then just related to the two presentations um I just wanted to not go by but like the the amount of hours that Miss Heidi um and farmer um Keith farmer Keith uh have put into this program are really amazing and

111they bring in a they and principal Brownfield youve formed a program that's so multidisciplinar and and encompasses all ages and everything and it's great and then um on the other spectrum of Art education the multidisciplinary nature of like leading a production and then also acting in it is uh great so great job to this kids and students and always so enjoyable to start not start the meeting but start the meeting that way since we had stuff before but now it's on to Dr Adamson oh thank you student trustee please uh yeah the things at the high schol going great um this week we had a winner like holiday spirit weeks which has been going great and we've just been having like lunchtime activities been giving away like treats and like having activities for kids to

112do at lunch which has been really awesome and then next week is the last week of school having finals week which is going to be stressful but it's going to be good to get that done and then go on break for a couple of weeks and then we have our poetry out loud competition which is actually coming up in January and then we have actually have our like a music concert tonight for the orchestra jazz band and band is performing tonight at the high school which is really awesome so yeah perfect thank you so much and now Dr Adamson all right thank you so much president Hazen I'm going to really try to keep this this short tonight because we've got so much on the agenda and the first one I really just wanted to

113um have asked director algazi to just put a photo up on the screen as you know many of you know I myself along with our five trustees I spent uh a good part of last week together at the California school board uh Association uh and we uh did a lot of learning together this particular uh photo was our first morning uh together as a board on Thursday morning prior to the big keynote uh speaker that that day um the the California School Board Association conference it is uh open to all districts throughout the state of C California so 1,000 districts and almost all of those you know were present in in some form uh but I really just wanted to share this with all of you introducing you know officially yes you know our our

114new our new core governance team uh to all of you uh and you know just you're going to hear more about it this evening because it's an item that we've agendized uh but just really you know I want I really want to shout it from the mountaintops on how excited I am to be working together with these five individuals how optimistic and hopeful I am about the work that we are going to do together uh and that's not to say it's not going to be easy work we have got a lot of you know hard things ahead of us they're going to be hard decisions but what I've learned for the time that we spent together last week whether it was in breakout sessions during Keynotes whether it was in an Uber or a taxi

115on the way to and from the hotel we were staying whether it was getting together for dinner those that evening this is a group of individuals who are so committed to the work that we do so committed to the students that we serve uh and I feel proud to be able to be serving alongside all of you uh and so just again I want that yes I want that knowing uh and we're going to do great things together for our students uh because they deserve the best and when that people deserve the best we need to have the best in those seats and and we do so really excited about that um it's the holidays right in case you didn't know and so just you know some of the things I just loved being able

116to attend our first uh my first treelight uh ceremony uh in Pacific Grove last week Monday night and what a treat you know from the students that of our own elementary students you're performing uh to the uh Mr and Mrs claw arriving you know from the fire track at the end uh what a delight so you know again just once again reminding me of how lucky I am to be a part of this community um we weren't able to attend it uh because we were in Anaheim I bit the Parade of Lights later on in the week um and then just the many concerts that occur and I myself have been fortunate enough already this week to attend the Middle School uh and the high school uh event uh led by Mrs bware and Mr

117M meser on Monday night and then our elementary one of our elementary performances last night from Forest Grove where they performed at the middle school um and just again you know kudos to our teachers to our uh music teachers but you know at the elementary school level you know that that really it's a group uh collaborative because it really involves the classroom teachers as well and they were all there last night along with you know principal Arun to just ensure a smooth uh sort of event and coordin of the event itself and just wonderful to see them uh you know on on display and sharing their wonderful talents we have more next week of course to attend so I hope to see many of you there um we've had just a few little visits this

118La these last three weeks here at the district office we were fortunate enough to have Mrs calus's middle school art class uh join us and their artwork is actually uh is what you see displayed in the hallways here at the district office so they got to come and take photos with their artwork and then we took a group photo but it was just really wonderful to you know anytime we can have students here at the district office is just a treat for everyone so we thank uh them for sharing their talents with us um and then and today we got to uh have a surprise visit from U Miss pra's uh SDC class at the Middle School uh and they came to uh serenate us with some holiday songs uh all in Sign Language so

119it was wonderful and again just a moment for us to stop be present you know and our entire staff was able to come out to to really enjoy that moment so again we we're grateful I also got today to attend the um drug awareness assembly at Forest Grove this is something new that we're doing this year partnering uh with uh Dr Casey Grover who is the facilitated the assembly uh and it was really you know Wonderful for me to be able to get to see then how well you know he was able to interact with our fifth graders this is something new we're doing this year in replacement of the day program um and there was a resounding I mean this went on for an hour and a half I TR McNary was there to

120enjoy it as well H and you know I think it was maybe sort of an hour into I'm looking over at principal Martinez and principal Arun when you know Dr Grover stopped and said you know do we want to keep going do we have more questions and there was just a resounding cheer from the fifth graders I yes you know they wanted to go all the way to use that entire hour and a half so you that's indicative to me of just the engagement uh the interest uh and he handled it you know incredibly well with just the the difficulty of that nature right you're talking about peer pressure you're talking about you know just building that awareness you know of the impact of drugs uh on you know especially in particular you know young

121growing bodies uh but they were unbelievably uh interested uh and the beauty about this is that this will be followed with you know lessons that'll take place uh you know in the classrooms in moving forward uh Robert down will have these scheduled next week Friday and so I'm looking forward to you just an equally wonderful presentation there um special thanks to youit just principal Martinez for helping ordinate this for us this year um again just a lot to look forward to uh and then uh let's see I think just my last you know one is uh that reminder you will see the the toy uh collection bins at every one of our sites here at the district office included uh and so just wanted to do a shout out to PG kaanis um for the

122the toy drive that they are running currently uh and you that runs through December 18th so if you have some extra toys a new toys uh that you want to drop by any one of our school sites here at the district office as well uh all of those will go to families in need and we're grateful uh for that just it's a time of you know joy and and giving uh and just a wonderful opportunity for for us to remember that you know we have many families you know who who don't don't have and are in need uh it's a chance for us to give back and with that happy holidays really at this point just I hope you're all going to be taking you know that time with schools are closed to just enjoy

123and be with one another so with that I return it to you president h thank you so much and we have next our safety report from assistance attendant join thank you president Dr haisen uh I'm trying to get through this quickly but I do have quite a bit on here tonight uh our pgusd district Safety Committee is scheduled for uh January 14 so if you're a Committee Member and you're listing online the uh agenda will be sent out uh here prior to us leaving for the break uh this year we're working on inventorying the classroom GO bags to ensure the necessary items are added uh to support our big five safety protocols so we will be in the classrooms doing that uh when we follow uh follow back up from the break California Department of

124Public uh Health has uh started its Health Hub and the link is now on our district website and um this is a uh consolidation of resources and information to support safe iners learning in the TK through 12 school setting and to mitigate the uh spread of communicable diseases and as I mentioned we'll be regular updating that on our website uh drug awareness and prevention Dr Adamson just uh spoke regarding the fifth grade substance abuse uh use prevention assembly uh we partnered with Montage Health through prescrib safe and uh as Dr Adamson mentioned uh today was our first assembly at Forest Grove and Robert down Elementary is scheduled for uh the 20th at 9:00 a.m. uh some general uh threat assessment and training items mcoe and mpusd uh held a school safety tabletop drill hosted uh

125by the critical Response Group that was this past week on December 10th uh director U Martinez was in attendance uh the drill brought together emergency response agencies and school safety leaders in across the county to engage in realistic scenario-based exercises that stimulate uh actual active threat situations involving multip uh multiple command structures the uh districtwide we got your back training uh will be begin with instructional staff uh start uh following the break uh the very first session is uh set to begin on January 13th from 320 to 420 and that's uh combined Forest Grove and Robert down together they it's being conducted by MC kimberland Associates at Forest Grove Elementary School uh as a reminder that we got your back program is the uh mindful based alternative to active shooter drills for schools especially for

126our our BK through five uh but it does address uh all grade levels it uh aims to increase school safety through situational awareness and we want to increase alertness and heighten the likelihood that students will share important information with adults at these at these sessions to come so uh January 13th as I mentioned Robert Down Forest Grove Elementary January 27th the high school and then we're working with our Consultants to finalize the training date at the middle school and this training is for our teaching staff uh so that they have the information the tools and the curriculum to deliver that uh to our students in the classroom some districtwide safety projects our camera system and Technology Information Systems updates we have the improved uh coverage for our cameras throughout the district beginning over the winter

127break uh approximately 50 new cameras are being added uh throughout the district uh we have improved uh we will have improved systems on the back end which may or may not include but we'll accept analytics in the future and that is our our server backend software uh that'll be taking place over the summer uh we did have a fiber optic break from from the Middle School to The Adult School Adult School is very much aware of that and so is our technology department uh they were thinking on their feet very quickly and had them back up within about 4 days uh we brought in Comcast as a temporary solution uh to provide ethernet to our adult school um but we are working on a more temporary solu solution with multiple layers of redundancy to um

128uh basically address the uh fiber optics uh infrastructure systems throughout the entire District that we're installed about 15 years ago uh and more to come on that some facility Improvement projects throughout the district that are related to safety Force grow evacuation signs are installed the roberttown uh site has about 50% of the evacuation sites signs installed Middle School Evac signs uh were were received this week and will be installed uh soon more likely than that sometime over the break or just thereafter uh same with the high school and the adult school um Robert down now has the remote door entry release at the main doors so similar to the other sites with the buzzer and um we are in the planning phase of installing a remote door release at Forest Grove and that's for the

129outer gate uh the Robert down fire alarm system upgrades are still pending our division of State architect approval and once they're complete that will go out to bid we are anticipating the Robert down fire alarm system project starting in the summer of 2025 thank you excellent so we're now to the section of the the agenda where we have individuals Desiring to address the board on any non-agenda item so just to be clear public comment on any item that's within the board's jurisdiction will be heard and we'll take comment on specific items on the agenda when that time comes so please hold comments on those items but the board will allow three minutes per speaker or up to and no more than 20 minutes per item per board policy and reminder that the board will not

130be responding to questions um either verbally or hands raised so um with that are there any community members either here in the room or online that would like to speak and I see we have one online so we'll start there but please come towards the Das if you're interested in the room as well Tom please go ahead okay uh good evening members of the board my name is Tom post and I am the proud parent of a kindergartener at Robert down Elementary next year my youngest will be starting transitional kindergarten at this wonderful school which we've grown to love for its strong sense of community and dedication to our children I'm here tonight to express my concern about a change this year that has reduced the amount of structured physical education time for TK students

131at Robert down as compared to last year this reduction is particularly concerning because our sister School Forest Grove Elementary continues to offer more PE time for their uh TK students creating inequity in our district the goal of transition kindergarten is to help our children build the foundational social and emotional skills they need to succeed in school and life research has shown that physical activity is a powerful tool for achieving this goal movement-based activities develop self-regulation teamwork and emotional resilience key aspects of this social emotional learning according to the CDC regular physical activity for young children enhances not only their physical development but also their ability to manage emotions interact positively with peers and focus on taxs shape America recommends that preschool age children receive at least 60 Minutes of structured physical activity daily as it

132supports both their motor skills and their emotional growth reducing PE time at Robert down risks depriving our TK students of these critical benefits it also creates inequity between our schools and our district as Forest Groves TK students continue to receive more opportunities to engage in activities that support support their social and emotional development I respectfully urge the board to consider reinstating last year's PE schedule for TK students at roberttown elementary if the bandwidth is the issue or the current PE program doesn't have the skill set for Early Childhood PE it could be an excellent opportunity for this board to make an investment given this well researched benefit this change would not only restore Equity between our schools but also honor the purpose of TK by supporting the whole child physically socially and emotionally let's ensure

133that all of our youngest Learners have the tools they need to thrive thank you all for your time and for your dedication to our children in our district thank you Tom for your comments any other community members in the room or online if not we'll move on to pgusd staff comments again in the rumor online don't all Rush okay okay excellent so now we're moving on to consent agenda I'll try not to do this at every meeting with just a quick um description that we're not going to discuss any of these items prior to the board vote unless a member of the board requests a specific item be discussed or pulled um from consent agenda so once we approve it we'll approve it as a whole again unless an item is pulled so with that

134you can see items basically a through n and I will first open up a again to public comment online or in the room no seeing no one move to the board discussion I'm looking around see if anyone has any concerns with consent just give me a nod or a reach for your mic okay so if there's no comment um I think I will go ahead and make a motion to approve consent agenda as presented I'll second that was moved by myself and seconded by trusty otmar and we'll go ahead and take a vote all in favor I hi hi any opposed none so that one passes 5- Z so after consent we're now on to action discussion item a where we now get to have a fun discussion of some of our extracurricular activities on

135the board the designation of community Representatives so this is going to be presented by Dr Adamson absolutely well thank you uh so yes we have four committees that we are seeking uh representatives from the board to serve on each of them uh so I'll just go ahead and go through them you know in in order um the montree County School Board executive kitti leaon uh we're looking for this one for just one primary representative uh and then obviously an alternative I believe last year that was uh our outgoing president Swanson who served in that in that capacity uh there are typically four meetings that occur you know throughout the year uh and I do believe that uh you know very often there there's the ability to also you know attend those by Zoom uh and

136you know or in person so you know I know that's that's definitely makes a little bit more accessible uh do I have any interest from any of our Trustees for serving as the primary uh representative for this committee oh I'll nominate myself trusty wax okay wonderful very good all right I'm putting uh trusty wax down as a as the primary do we have someone willing to step in as the alternative for that Al do the alternative thank you trusty shamas wonderful okay wonderful so the next is our community Human Services leaz on and uh last year we were fortunate to have trusty McNary serve in this position how many uh meetings are there regularly throughout the year trusty Mar uh monthly meetings inperson attendances required in San City and they are held on the I

137want to say it's the third Thursday morning from 11: to 1 so just as far as understanding the time commitment thank you do we have interest from the board on serving as the primary representative for this committee I'm happy to continue serving in that role if no one else is um to all right trust M wonder if I'm putting your name down as the primary do we have someone who'd be willing to serve as the AL alternate alternative I could be the alternate thank you very much trusty wax okay well next we have our subcommittee with the City of Pacific Grove this is something that we uh actually started at the uh beginning of of this school year uh we've had I believe two meetings so far the goal being that you know we meet

138a minimum of three times a year uh and this uh you know for those of you who aren't familiar with this this is really a committee with the the City of Pacific Grove uh for us truly to be able to collaborate closely uh and the mayor and the uh the city manager you know serve on from the city Side along with at least you know two of their council members myself and assistant superintendent JN I serve and represent the district uh along with two trustees and this we were fortunate enough to have uh Dr Hazen and truste uh otmar who you know served in that capacity so we are seeking for two trustees to continue uh representing the district for this coming year do I have any interest volunteer myself for this one too yeah

139I was just goingon to say I'm happy to do it if no one else wants but I would love to give someone else a chance and I'd be happy to put myself forward as alternative if no one else oh would you no no no are you sure okay I'm working full-time so I have to be selective about um okay but you will always be invited well thank you I may or may not attend Fair wonderful so I have down uh trusty wax and then uh president uh Hazen as our two Representatives we appreciate that thank you all right and then our final committee is uh the policy committee with the district and that uh we typically have two trustees who serve on that uh this past year we were fortunate enough to have trustee MC

140uh and outgoing trustee Carolyn Swanson uh and this is we meet quarterly so four times a year uh it's about an hour and a half and the purpose of this is really to uh work together with us as a district it's um it's myself assistant superintendent Jo members of our cabinet uh and depending on you know the areas of Interest anyone from our any of our directors or our site leaders who you know are involved in those particular policies but the California School Board Association they submit uh quarterly uh policies that are due for uh updates uh and really it's our role to then as a committee go through all of those recommendations uh and adopt those changes uh or make our own adjustments that you know really suit us as a district uh and

141like I said it's we meet four times a year do I have interest in committee I interested thank you trusty opar second yes I am I'm also interested thank you trusty shamas wonderful all right and then really the final item on there you know any if there was any recommendation for you know additional committees that we may want to consider uh as a board I had two that I'll put out there but not with any like Stak in the ground so to speak um one would just be a a cross Moni Peninsula board committee potentially just some for liasing with our neighboring school districts but it doesn't have to be necessarily formal um the other one I was going to suggest actually literally just left my head so I'll I'll just stick with that one

142for now if it comes backa what about the rest of the board how does everyone feel about that as mpusd the on there one way the other do we want to consider that as a potential committee I guess is what I'm I think it makes sense to to stay in contact with um other districts so I'm for it I'm not saying that I volunteer for it I support the idea and I might say suggest we we do some like you know probing and see if something that Mak sense for this upcoming year and then we can maybe form it mid year I think it's important that everybody on the board is on the same page before that happens exactly agreed so I'm I'm I'm okay with that I don't know if we want to do

143just a general temperature check in with everybody else well um I think it'd be important to know what subjects you really want to discuss with with another district and um you know kind of maybe even before you approach them say you know these are some areas of interest that that were wondering about uh and then see what they have to say back Y and I can speak the two items that have come up recently I mean one was calendar alignment just for the breaks for um in terms of you know if one school district is off sometimes there's not child care options during that break if it's if it's misalign that was one thing that has come up in the past another was you know opportunity for either learning or shared CTE dual enrollment stuff

144if we don't have the full CTE offerings if there's other neighboring districts that do it could be a potential learning opportunity those are two that just come up at the board meetings but there might be other and I don't think we're necessarily you know saying we're going to put a committee together I think there's just if there's interest for us to at least explore it with mpusd um and you know to see what their interest is you know on that end if that would even be something you they'd be bble to commit to as well um you just has that come up before that you're bring you know has this been a discussion you've already had not not not in this format because this I mean probably could have put up as a future giant

145item but this comes up once a year right for the future committees and being frank it just came off the top of my head given past discussions that it might be something to consider for and I would say mpsc maybe Carmel as well and maybe um you know some of the other North Mar count can I weigh in please it's my understanding that you Dr Adamson have created relationships with the neighboring districts to Pacific Grove and that you all have a good working relationship is that right yes I I would I would say that in fact we had our own little breakout session at the the conference last week to really talk about some of the areas you know that that impact all of us y absolutely I think I see the kind of the

146challenge that Beth raised in knowing like what our jurisdiction and what our discussions are going to be limited to because hard to imagine like everything we could possibly talk about about Schoolboard business with another district and I also think it's a little bit incumbent upon us as trustees to reach out to other people serving in our similar role and maybe on our I know this is a volunteer gig and everything is on our own time but also develop those relationships um in individually so that we can you know find things to collaborate on and maybe develop something in the future so I think I am uh open to exploring kind of curious what that looks like and I also um would ask that we kind of take that on for ourselves too in the coming

147year I like that okay and with that I think looks like we do have public comment on this as well so is there any public comments on the Committees the new older proposed okay none in the room none online and we'll go to we just had kind of a mini board discussion so was there any other comments that folks wanted to throw out no one's grabbing their mic so I'll move oh yeah one thing um yeah please you might you know you're gonna go to a County board meeting going to every board but the county is kind of the place to bring that up because they can provide um subject matter or divide um the county up into appropriate like um spheres that have commonality and so that might be a place to stay to

148start with it and Mike can bring it up at this next meeting first charge to trustee wax's comme representation not that yes okay with that um can I get a motion to approve the subcommittee representation as we discuss I'll move second okay so moved by trusty otmar and seconded by trusty shamas all in favor please say I I I all opposed it passes 5 Z all sorry trustee student representative would you like to offer a vote on this after we voted out order you said I as well thank you and just a reminder so please remind me I should be going to the trustee first as he's one of the most if not the most important voices in the room so thank you for that reminder Josh but thank you uh there you go o

149okay so now we are on to Item B which is our 2425 first interim report and I think we have assistant superintendent Jordan all right thank you very much um Lewis is going to get it queued up yeah so we'll go to the next slide um throughout the year the budget for the district's various funds are revised to reflect uh changing Financial conditions as you're all aware uh or as a result of board decisions uh that may have a fiscal impact to our district primary budget revisions are shared early in the fiscal year uh to update beginning fund balances followed uh by the close of the fiscal year with our un audited actuals budget revisions are again uh included in the first interim report that we're giving tonight and then a second interim report in

150March uh the final budget revision is usually completed toward the end of the fiscal year we'll have a budget study session uh we will have a public hearing and then the board will vote on the adopted budget for the out fiscal year the first enor report tonight covers the uh fiscal year 20242 from July 1st through October 31st and the projections uh or for the activity therein uh the governing body must certify that the district is either able to meet its Financial Obligations for the current fiscal year and two and next two subsequent fiscal years uh by providing a positive certification or certify that it may not be able to meet those obligations tonight uh staff is bringing the first inter report forward and based on our current multi-year projections pgusd will meet its Financial

151Obligations in the current year and subsequent two years uh the the this report reflects the following conditions uh we go through our property tax projections for fiscal year 2425 they've now since been revised uh to include the County Tax Assessor's Office increase the UN audited actuals which we completed in September ending fund balances have been posted for the 2425 year Staffing and position control changes and payroll encumbrances have been recorded and reconciled restricted resources and site donation account ending fund balances have now been posted as beginning fund balances for our uh 2425 year pgusd is a basic Aid funded district and that's our primary source of Revenue which is local property taxes therefore we do exceed the local control funding formula entitlement you can see on the bottom of the slide there what our entitlement

152would be uh for 2425 uh just over 21 million uh that is if we were a we were not a basic Aid School District but we are uh considering our reeven Revenue limit projections have us at just north of 39 million in Revenue based on property taxes there are current there are current benefits U Back Up just a second there are current benefits uh to being basic aid for those that aren't aware tonight most of you are uh but the changes in our average daily attendance doesn't affect our unrestricted Revenue all that much uh it can affect restricted revenue and categorical funding and we've talked about some of those in the past uh the district is funded above the state level Ada and the growth in property tax uh rates equate to increased Revenue year-over-year

153uh with around an average of 5% we've had some years that have been below 5% some that have been higher than 5% but on average around 5% some of the things we have to watch out for uh and plan accordingly for a long-term uh projected glow growth or decline in enrollment pgusd has been somewhat flat over the course of the last few years we've had a couple of dips and then we've had a couple of increases based on upk but for the most part we're considered flat uh we need to pay close attention to our limited unrestricted Revenue if enrollment grows we need to pay close attention to our restricted resources expiring and properly budget early and plan often for those expiring resources so not to impact the general fund um property taxes are delayed

154throughout the year this is something that we uh have to pay attention to very closely because of our cash flow issues uh we see a huge influx of our Revenue in December and in April and then kind of a smattering of a revenue shows up throughout the year in between uh but it's very important for us to to to stay on top of that and that's the rational for why we as a district utilize a TR which is a tax revenue anticipation note and I'll talk about that later in the presentation but again paying close attention to cash flow so we can meet our obligations every single month when Revenue might not exist for two or three months because we're waiting for those tax revenues to come in next slide leis all right so let's

155take a look right now at our combined fundo W this is the general fund combined restricted and unrestricted uh let's look at our beginning balances and when we do so we must pay in mind that these are un audited actuals and until our Auditors finalize the actuals for the 2324 year which I'll bring to the board in January or February these are still un audited but the 2425 adopted budget uh District began with an estimated beginning fund balance of 8.7 million you can see that there at the top uh after posting the United actuals and budget revision now at first interim we note a change in the combined beginning balances next we take a look at revenues that's the next column down uh we at the adopted budget we had around uh 46.5 million right

156now at first interim we're looking at similar amount 467 474 you can see it's a net change there in a revenue of 77563 total expenditures at adopted budget uh just over 47.6 million you can see here at first interim we have projected uh expenditures just north of 49.4 million that is an increase over the adopted budget of 1.8 million you can see what this does to the ending fund balance again the projected at the adopted budget had us uh with an ending fund balance of just over 7.2 and at first interim now we are projecting our ending fund balance to be just over around 5.7 million that's a reduction of just under or just over sorry 1.4 million and as it relates to District reserves um remember this is combined when I'm talking about this

157so our reserves are made up of unrestricted reserves so it doesn't look like a huge movement but at the adopted budget we had an 88.7% Reserve now an 8.9% reserve and that went up by 0.2% next slide leis the district receives funding for its General operations from various sources uh the largest of those sources source of Revenue comes from local property tax that's lumped in under lcff sources you can see that here on the pie chart our lcf sources uh do have other components of Revenue and uh educational protection account some of the referrals that we receive but all in all this is this is the lump sum lcff revenue for our district of 39 m614 95 Federal sources um over the course of the last three years we've been seeing this number go down

158and down and down this is more or less related to categorical programs restricted programs cares act Esser some of the folks like to call it the co but there were other restricted resources that are kind of tapering off and you can see here this year we have a projection of around 661 th000 that's down substantially from prior years State sources combined for just over 3.5 million those are categorically funded programs from the state just to give an example uh the pl 28 art Arts music program is an ongoing State categorical funding uh Revenue source and that falls under state and local sources um number of things fall under local but one example might be our selfa funding through the county office that we receive for support of our special education programs next slid list so

159here you can see an illustration of our projected unrestricted expenditures for the 24-25 year again this is at first interim uh if you break it down it's just around 41% for certificated salaries 21% for classified salaries employee benefits of 24% books and supplies 4% Services another OPP operating expenditures 10 and other outgoing other outgoing indirect is around less than 1% sorry just one second next slide L yeah you got that okay so this slide uh represents a page in The District budget book that we maintain um very thankful to Robin Blakeley who started this and uh Rick Miller and song who carried this on this is a lot of information a lot of data and on the far left hand column you'll see the 23 24 audited actuals we have columns that go all the

160way back to 2007 historical data for this District so that's very helpful to have just direct your attention tonight to the um the red dashed circle around the budget revision and first interim and uh the arrows that connect let's see you will see a net increase uh over adopted budget to the carryover and the restricted balance that's 3 3, 28689 that's a very top number there uh we increased our restricted beginning balance from budget revision simply because there was beginning balances that needed to get moved forward from the prior fiscal year that will remain unspent that now become a beginning fund balance and as you can see on the unrestricted side that's just below that of 5.4 million didn't change a whole lot and the beginning fund balance totals there uh at at the budget

161revision was just over 8.4 starting the year now we're showing just over 8.7 next down you look at the revenues and total revenues I talked about how those were made up earlier um really I just wanted to show you the uh the change there right we had just over 46.5 million in projected revenues at budget and now we have just uh well under that amount right we were we were we were short about 77,000 in projected Revenue but again this will change by second interim um down into the next column looking at expenditures you can see the change from budget uh the first one being the 19,6 76544 is now uh 19,8 38753 that's our certificated salaries and then on the way down you can see the changes there um the biggest substantial change uh

162well would be in the services and other you can see that that went up a little bit there that is our 5000s and a lot of that is related to I went back to the top the beginning balance of restricted accounts being moved forward we have to spend down those restricted dollars so if we have a higher beginning balance on the restricted side we need to match that up with expenditures it also contributes to our deficit um but that's basically the nature of receiving restricted dollars um you make your way down you'll see our total expenditures uh for the District of just over the 49 million 49 milion 410774 and as you can see in the green now we show Surplus deficit so we are showing a deficit this year we showed a deficit at

163the budget adoption uh but but the deficit has increased on the restricted side substantially and it's went down a little bit on the unrestricted side as you can see there so we have a combined deficit of just over 2.9 Million that's made up of just under 900,000 in unrestricted deficit and just over 2 million in restricted deficit spending move your way down from there you'll see a couple of $200,000 transfer outs um those are each a transfer from the general fund from fund uh from the general fund to fund 14 deferred maintenance and from and to fund 40 capital reserve uh those transfer outs were a director from the board two years ago to begin to build balances in those two funds that did not exist for some time and that's related to uh maintenance

164and deferred maintenance of our school sites you can see the ending fund balance is projected as I mentioned previously but here on this chart at 5,774 776 and then we move our way down into the components of ending fund balance and what this is made up of so we always carry $55,000 in revolving cash the next item there you'll see the uh 1,182 657 that is us uh projecting what the carryover from restricted resources will be for next year so where we land at the end of the year you know we're not planning to spend all 3,286 819 uh so that 1,182 657 will move to the next year as a beginning balance on the restricted side but again these are just projections you move down to the assigned category these are all areas where

165we have to assign dollars statutorily um each and every one of these has a formula associated with it um the bolded highlighted e which is 3% reserve for economic uncertainties is the most critical component we need to address and that is the 1,482 323 is exactly 3% of our total expenditures and that's a statutory obligation of the district to carry you can move your way down and see the subtotal of unrestricted uh reserves it actually went up from the adopted budget to 4,587 that's that's a good thing we want to see the restricted or sorry the unrestricted reserves be higher um and then again you'll see here at the in the um in the red there at the bottom we went from an 88.6% Reserve to a projected 88.9% Reserve with an ending fund balance

166of 5,774 776 next slide leis so I mentioned this earlier how important it is for us to maintain cash flow um this District's property tax revenue does trickle in over over the course of a few months but just for an example uh a large influx of Revenue came in in April to the district of around1 million and from then until basically now we haven't received any Revenue right so six months without Revenue now we do get some local control funding formula lcff base Revenue that shows up you know to the tune of2 200,000 400,000 here or there but we're not seeing that massive amount of Revenue so it's very important especially from April until right now that we are monitoring cash flow because cash flow is King even though we know this district has $39

167million in Revenue coming in from property taxes um we have a six-month period of time where we're kind of operating on what we received in in a re you know prior to that so this district has taken out a TR for nearly 20 years that's a tax revenue anticipation note we anticipate bringing one forward to the board again this March uh we will do our trans sizing uh over the course of February and March and bring it to the board for approval for the 25 26 year but I can't stress again how important this is that the board does uh adopt a TR next slide going to try to go quickly through the snapshots so we just went through fund 01 that's our unrestricted general fund and restricted general fund uh these are all of

168other funds so this is our adult tion fund 11 and then just highlighting some of the changes since the adopted budget uh the beginning fund balance increased over adopted budget when we posted beginning fund balances which were posted by the county on the revenue side we had a decrease from the adopted budget with updated projected revenues uh we have expenditures which did increase and that's based on the updated projected uh expenditures associated with the 4000s object 4000s those are our books and supplies uh we're projecting a over just over $2.7 million deficit in this fund uh and that's based on increased spending and expenditures in the 4,000 and 5,000 objects and this is a planned program with fund 11 essentially fund 11 uh similar to fund 13 I'll get into that in a second cannot

169carry um a large Reserve unlike our general fund fund 11 cannot carry statutorily cannot carry a large Reserve so you plan for expenditures you plan the deficit spend because these funds have have carried forward ending fund balances and then we kind of true up at the end of the year to see where we land um all in all we show an ending fund balance in fund 11 of just over 9 thou well just under $10,000 uh but when we like I said when we close the books at the end of the year and I present on out of actuals this tends to change quite a bit both in fund 11 and fund 13 uh the Child Development Fund here um fun funds our early childhood education program uh no change over adopted Budget on the

170beginning balance we had a decrease in the uh from the adopted budget in Revenue uh when we updated the projected revenues we had an increase of expenditures over the adopted budget and that was that was associated with 2000s which is the classified salaries and 4000s which is materials and supplies we had an increase in expenditures there we do show a small deficit of 7476 with an ending fund balance of 125,000 uh 274 next slide all right fund 13 um I already prefaced with kind of how we we operate this fund normally with a deficit we have to be careful how much of a surplus we have uh but the changes since the adopted budget you'll see no change over the adopted budget in our beginning balance um we do have a change in our Revenue

171it's increased based on projections we do have an increase in expenditures and that's again when we have an increase in Revenue in fund 13 we have to match that with an increase in expenditure uh to maintain the net cash resource allowance that we have so we can't have we we cannot have too much Surplus in this in this account uh and that's due to labor hour increase and expansion of program thankful to director s for what he's been doing with the Food Services Program and uh we are showing a small Surplus here which did increase over adopted and ending fund balance as a result of that increase did go up over adopted fund 14 no change from the adopted Budget on the beginning fund balance uh we did have an increase of Revenue over the

172adopted and that's the calap grant that the district applied for um associated with the the ABM uh contract that we had for um for a uh Energy savings uh contract within the district we applied for uh and we received every penny the Cal shape funding initial phase and just so everyone's aware we've applied for phase two which could bring the district an additional 1.2 million for energy saving ini Ives we're still waiting to hear about the approval on phase two but the increase in revenu is associated with the cal cal shape grant funding that we weren't aware of at the time of adopted budget uh expenditures they of course increased to match the grant that we received and um we do show a deficit which again increased U because of the expenditures and you'll see

173the ending fund balance went down over the adopted budget because of the deficit to just over 461000 next slide post-employment benefits uh we don't we don't do much in this account the uh the district had been at some some time ago been been setting aside dollars for OPB U which is your um deferred costs of folks for retirement uh we basically maintain this account as it sits because you cannot move any money out of this account you can only move it in you can only fund transfer in so basically no changes in any changes that exists here is due to interest earned the building and educational technology fund 21 um this is our measure a measure D and then future measure B uh program fund so some of the changes since first interim or beginning

174balance uh there was no change because at the time we had not received the revenue which was the sale of the uh series c bond sale for measure d uh but we do have new oh sorry I apologize we do have new Revenue we do do have we so the revenue did increase by 8.7 million the beginning balance did not because that was carry forward from the prior year um we did received that Revenue last month and it's now um in fund 21 from County Treasury our expenditures increased over adopted because of the receipt of the series c bond sale uh again to match the um Revenue with expenditures and the rationale for that again is once we have a series release the district has three years to spend those dollars statutorily so we have

175to be strategic and when we release a series we have to make sure that we're not releasing too much that we can't spend in a course of three years we do show a surplus of just over 2.3 million and an ending fund balance of around 4.7 million and later this evening you'll be getting a presentation from director Anderson related to the uh projects list that he's going to propose for the 2025 year associated with measure C or measure D series C next slide we now have developer Fe fund fund 25 that's brand new to this District we've been levying fees for just about a year and as you can see here uh we we have a projected ending fund balance of just over $107,000 and I'll note that the board hasn't directed staff to build

176any sort of an expenditure plan associated with this Revenue yet because this is new and um ideally what you do is you you allow this fund to build up an ending fund balance before we determine how to utilize this uh this revenue for offsetting costs but we are loving to developer fees and we do anticipate more this year to the tune of around 34 thou 34749 capital projects fund 40 here here are the changes since the budget adoption uh we had a decrease from the adopted budget in the beginning balance no change in Revenue uh decrease in expenditures in the adopted budget no change in deficit that's what was reported at at adopted and the ending fund balance again decreased because of the um beginning fund balance decrease when we rolled forward from 23 24

177next slide and then this is where I like to like to end and hope everyone's still awake um we have a really neat thing I mentioned earlier called the budget book it's on the district's website under the business office documents it's wellmaintained there is a lot of information in that book the very last page of the 177 page uh document is our District overview um and I like to leave you with this it shows our demographic on top uh on the left hand side where you see the 2425 beginning fund balance kind of a summary of uh a snapshot of the district financials there you can see the property tax Trends in the middle and the general fund Reserve Trends in the middle uh I do like to note that under the general fund Reserve

178Trend this District's you know moved from a 17.4 down to it's 8.9 but it rounded up to nine down there at the bottom we also show here on this sheet the stirs and purs rate increases um as you can see stirs is still Level at 19.1% and Pur rate did increase to 27.3% and you can see the the fiscal impact in the right-and column associated with that percentage and then we update our esack testing down below uh and we show our free and reduced meal percentage calculations as well there's a whole lot more in the budget book but this is a nice little summary if you just wanted to take a quick snapshot of the district's Health uh fiscal Health this is kind of one of the slides I would I would direct you to

179and with that conclud my presentation I'll open it up for questions excellent and as usual we go out here now to first to the public folks are probably digesting like I am but please feel free to move towards the podium or raise your hand online I'm looking at you principal roach but you're heading out okay good okay with that yeah exactly with that I will now move towards um board discussion and I'm I'm going to start with our student trustee on this very simple matter if you have any thoughts or questions you wanted to ask okay none of I'm good okay anyone from the board with questions of yes I see Beth starting us off well I learned something new um that we have to spend those Bond monies within three years I really don't

180remember that um but in relationship to the bond you have a fund for the bond money coming in um does that money ever is it allowed to be put into deferred maintenance fund or not you can't so no the um anything in fund 21 has to stay it has to reside within fund 21 so you can't transfer out or transfer in it's basically its sole source I will mention that's not to say that measure D for example a huge list of the projects associated with me measure D which were approved by the voters and approved by the board were some of them were deferred maintenance projects right you just can't move it to deferred maintenance fund 14 right so just one question kind of following on that quickly um mainly it's a question about timing

181like you mentioned we did as a board put the 200k aside for defered maintenance is that something we should be reconsidering at this point or do you think that's something we should probably bring up at a future budget meet like coordination meeting um if you know based on the measured he passing just one of your advice on and it's fine to say let's kick that can a bit further to see I think they're two different things um you know well I know they are they're two two very different things like measure be's passage is not there's no language in there associated with the F maintenance it's all modernization uh expansion of Pathways growth a program um that's not deferred maintenance so I believe this District still needs to maintain a fund account with uh for

182future deferred maintenance because if we decide to grow program build new buildings modernized we're going to have to maintain those at some point and you don't want to go back to the voters later for a deferred maintenance Bond and uh like I mentioned before we can't transfer from fund 21 to 14 to support the Deferred maintenance for the future use um so it's definitely something we will be discussing discussing in our budget study session in January and one thing to note related to the transfers um the transfers are done at the end of the fiscal year right so if you know we're working through the fiscal year and you know we're looking at continual deficit there is some discretion by the board at the end of the year as to direct staff to make a

183decision to do something one way or another U but it's something that we literally do at year end close I don't we we do not do it until July so thank you so much for that explanation any other questions see someone reaching yes um with the developer fee fund 25 you said wait for it to grow a little bit like is there a certain am dollar amount or what is waiting or how long is yeah so staff more or less um hasn't been given Direction by the board as to um what that fund balance should or should not be before we develop an expenditure plan so um I'm more or less waiting for the direction of the board to and I think again this is something we would talk about in our January budget study

184session because we're not only looking at the general fund we're looking at all funds um but it's only been a year since we've been leving developer fees and um I think that we would want to you know there there's there is um requirements around how you spend the developer fee dollars as well and you know you probably need I'll just throw out a number that I think is relevant you need north of about a half a million in there before you start to build an expenditure plan tied to developer fee spending right uh most developer fee funds like fund 25s have been in existence for a very long time they have a very healthy ending fund balance and they're used to match certain program projects within the district at the direction of the board so

185I think we talk about it during our budget study session in January and and make a determination at that point as to you know kind of what the plan might be and then the board would direct staff to bring back a proposed expenditure plan associated with with that spending just as the board who started this it was um our facilities have been a topic that have been in the Forefront of our conversations and this was something that was recommended so that as our deferred maintenance comes up it doesn't end up getting deferred to the extent that it did did um in previous years so we hadn't discussed as a board anything beyond putting that specific amount of money aside as far as future planning or a set amount or anything else so hopefully we'll have

186those conversations together okay yeah it sounds like the good time to have that would be after our study session on the budget so I I'll flag that if someone wants to run up as a future agenda item but I don't think we that with that no more discussion um now is the time to see if we can get a motion for the first interim report to approve it as presented I'm comfortable making a motion on staff's recommendation we have a second I'll second now I'll go to the student trustee first I and then there rest of the board hi hi hi excellent that passes 5 Z with support of the student trusty so now we're going to move on to item C and this is going to be presented by um Barbara Martinez a principal

187and thank you very much where is B Mar I stole it that was good evening everybody robber Martinez principal of the adult school and director overseeing the state preschool program and today tonight we're here to uh recommend that the board approve board resolution number 1142 which will allow the district to continue to offer State preschool program for the 2526 school year um this is subject to ongoing review to verify that the program expenses are within the amount of the approve as approved by the board and as you know for many years um the district has participated in the state preschool program offering preschool opportunities for students whose families meet the income eligibility requirements in order to continue participation in the program the board must approve this resolution and authorize the contract that was submitted so

188the Child Development Fund fund 12 supports the state preschool program and the before and after school program the state funding for the state preschool program has not been and will not be sufficient to fully support the preschool program within the Child Development Fund the fees collected to the fees collected to fund basp have not been sufficient to fully fund the operating expenses board approved contributions from the unrestricted general fund um to support the state preschool program and basp are as follows the state preschool program is 19 , 635 basp 17,520 for the 2526 school year the estimated contribution would be around $37,000 1555 subject to final reconciliation for Staffing costs um the fiscal impact um for the MRA which is the maximum reimbursement amount is about $183,000 430 in this in State funding into fund

18912 okay so thank you very much I'm G to pass this resolution down so um clerk mcir for me and I'll send it to the state department so thank you so much uh Mr for the presentation we're going to start with public comment on this item anyone online anyone in person seeing none move on to or discussion starting again with our student trustee okay excellent and then anyone else on the board that would like to okay yes are the bsrp fees capped by the state or I'll defer sorry M Shuffle yeah so we have to establish the MRA the maximum reimburse versible amount and that's what the resolution is doing and um basp is that's a local program for us so there's a cap for uh after school early School enrichment associated with um our

190early childhood education program as well as other grade levels so that's effectively what we're doing tonight we're asking the board to adopt the maximum allowable reimbursement of 18343 that we can seek uh State funding for it's funny we just bury you guys with numbers on your first meeting timing of our calendar if not no more comment I would like to make a motion with a a slight change from clerk truste Hazen to clerk trusty McNary on this um which has already been changed thank you Lucero um so also move did I would like to Second resolution 1142 I'll second so moved by myself and then seconded by trusty otmar student trustee would you like to have a vote on this one before we let you off the hook I I rest of the board I

191I anyone opposed if not it passes 5- Z with that thank you so much blue pen I can another okay but for those following along in the room and those at home we're on item D approval of the measure a um Ed Tech Bond and we have evening director binder thank you Matthew binder director of educational technology for the district and we bring you uh director algazi and myself we're proud to bring you our latest list uh this is a biannual presentation we come to you twice a year this is our jul this is our June um sorry our January 2025 the next will be in June 2025 and um accordingly we've got not only a distribution by category of how these expenditures are being divided up but we also have the detailed list as

192well in the board packet with the estimations of uh costs uh quantities and um how those funds are being directed in terms of what programs what school sites uh what specific um purchasing um uh details are included as well just really quick this list is developed through a collaborative process through the core team we've got eight on our uh technology team districtwide uh and then we bring that to our technology committee which is a larger group made up of repres representation from across the district um involving all uh areas certificated classified administrative parents uh the list is uh reviewed and endorsed by the committee before we bring it to you and as you can see here it is consistent with uh previous lists that we've brought forward uh and um basically uh kept within the

193um specific quantity that we were directed to stay in um in 2016 as we bring It Forward twice a year these uh expenditures are aligned with our current educational technology plan which is up for uh Revision in the spring threeyear educational technology plan happy to take any questions excellent okay so we have time now thank you very much for your presentation director Rond we have time now for public comment none on the room not online um board discussion on this item um yes I have a question um I see on the expenditures chart items 12 and 13 are related to um cameras and security cameras can you talk about a little bit more about what that is I guess my question is over time it's come to my understanding that not all areas are covered

194on every single campus by a camera is this something that's going to be addressing like the blackout places on campuses or lack of coverage yeah who better discuss that than the point person on that project in particular um so yeah the thought was to improve the coverage around the campuses so this would be adding 50 cameras okay across the district um and then like Josh said in the safety report the plan then is this summer to to select a new NVR which has some in Network video recorder the brains behind the whole thing um which has hopefully more intelligence than we have and and we still need to work with the Safety Committee to determine exactly which NVR system is the best one and provides the capabilities that we're looking for thank you that answered

195my question and this second one may be a bit premature but we had the edtech bond in 2014 when Tech wasn't as essential and literally like school supply now so have we given any thought to the Future for planning and how we're going to address things like renewals annual things that we're gonna have to pay for when these monies run out and I'm not expecting you to you know tell me your comprehensive plan but I'm curious if those discussions are starting absolutely we do have a long-term budget development process that kind of uh is aligned with our measure a by annual expenditure uh sheet sheets that we bring to you um we have our edtech bond our edtech plan which was Forward Thinking three years out from when we um made it basically put it

196uh to you for for approval um and as a point of example we have now started our replacement plans for student Chromebooks at the high school which is going to roll out next year and then that's a multi-year process by which we stagger the the refresh down the grade span so that plan has already been established as well that'll show up in our revised head Tech plan yeah so yeah we we're we're constantly thinking ahead director algazi and myself we have conversations almost on a weekly basis uh as to the changing landscape and the environment as what of what's coming uh one of the big topics of course on everybody's mind is how is AI going to factor in on all this so yeah those conversations are definitely I'm really pleased to hear that we're

197doing the long-term planning in terms of um what we buy and how we budget for it so thank you absolutely okay not seeing anyone else grab further mic go ahead to a motion anyone like to make a motion to approve the measure a tech expenditures as presented I'll make a motion on staff's recommendation I'll second that so uh motion made by trusty M or clerk McNary seconded by myself all in favor hi hi hi the opposed with none that passes 5 so we're on to item e measure d project reprioritization page 242 there we go good evening everybody so it's probably a little more than two years ago that I stood at this Podium and brought the first reprioritization plan into place um part of that reprioritization plan was coming up with kind of A

198Five-Year Plan of what to do and what what are our priorities and in doing my homework for this um I brought up that Five-Year Plan and um this is the one I was working from I don't you can't see that from there but I drew a red line through everything that we've already got done and uh it's quite phenomenal so I just thought I'd bring up show my homework that we're two I'm two and a half years into this position and we're more than two-thirds done so um really want to thank my team uh the support I get from the board Josh and quite frankly the taxpayers funding all this it's just phenomenal what are the Transformations that are happening here at pgusd so tonight I bring you a new plan to kind of continue

199with the same um I think you're going to enjoy this because you're going to see that it's really is more of the same we're really still focused on building envelope and some of the larger ticket items I'm really excited about going through this next phase so we can start moving indoors and doing more work inside the classrooms where you know the where our students spend most of their time once I get them dry and warm and good air quality environments then then we want to start getting some flooring and some painting and stuff done so so um I kind of broke it down by the schools and what we have is on the left you'll see what was approved originally you know back in 2020 I believe and that is what I would be expected

200to do right now under series C and what I'm offering is something slightly different and things were moved around through the first reprioritization so you'll see things from series B for example on the right side we're going to resurface the play Playard and that's the asphalt surfaces at the school so uh also as I'm doing this you're going to see the the bottom line dollar figures there's like the Rober down totals here for robber down on the right is what was anticipated uh with a lot of that work completed or something that we're going to postpone you know we're going to see some savings but it's you're going to see it bouncing back and forth and at the the very last slide you'll see the the bottom dollar figures so at this point there was

201a request under series C to replace uh some Portables uh we're still you know in the frame of mind and we're waiting on that to to do something maybe bigger and better um and so I think we want to you know just kind kind of pause for a moment and go on with the other work until we come up with a clear idea based on the facilities assessment that's coming up you know so we're I think it makes sense to do that so that's that's the first one for rubber down uh you have a copy there if you have any questions on that I I think you know we could wait till the end um next slide so now we move on to Forest Grove Elementary again we have some of the series B stuff

202going back up and again that's that the playground surface surfacing the asphalt in the in the back of the school um we had a continuous water intrusion issue there from up in the field I guess that's been going on for a number of years like 15 plus years um one of the good news items about that is where even with the rain we've had recently we're not seeing a ton of water getting by so I think we're it's going to be safe to resurface that so I went ahead and put that back in uh the good news is it's also we're seeing a no water under the building yet so I think we solved two Problems by taking care of this uh tiny bit of engineering little change in plans and I think it's gets

203paying off in dividends so again here you're going to see some savings on the right hand side and slide so here we are with Pacific Grove High School and you're going to see here we're all of a sudden ticking up and spending some big money uh why is that this is we're moving into electrical switch gear so elect the electrical switch gear is under contract with the ABM group um originally there was $75,000 put in for this project to try to stop the water from coming in um after taking a good look at this we realize this is one of those areas we're not going to be able to stop the groundwater so it's going to require moving the switch gear out of the room um this is an upgrade that is well well overdue

204anyways so um that was already previously approved by the board it's just showing up here as it's falling into place during series C um okay next slide um I for had to put the the name on this one this is the Middle School um and again we're seeing some savings here uh because we're you know putting putting off some of the bigger we're reducing the scope on the roof and gutter um and the reason I'm able to do that is I actually had uh the Spanish tile roof on the Pacific the PAC the Performing Art Center actually peeled that back did some work and put it back uh for ex a lot less money than replacing that roof and I believe that's going to hold for quite a few more years and now we're just

205going to be addressing the roof on Building A and B the front the front half first this this series so um again some savings here that we'll transfer to other work one David Avenue School uh this has been a little bit neglected so here we're going to see a little pump up in in doing some stuff here uh we want to remodel a couple of bathrooms uh we want to start taking care of some of the wood rot and uh the gutters that were never done when the roofs were put on so we're going to see a little increase in in spending some Revenue here but I think it's overdue okay okay now on to the Adult School uh unfortunately I I would love to spend more money at the adult school but it's kind

206of a timely thing we need to take care of some items before we could spend money in the appropriate places there and also Barbara had a really great idea and used her her team during covid to paint the exterior so that's going to hold up for a few more years we're pretty sure so good work on Barbara's part she's saving us here um so so we're going to postpone the roof of gutter for probably the next series and then we're because I think we're going to look at Pro probably putting a different product on that roof and we'll see how that goes okay so this one didn't quite make it all the way on um a little bit so okay bummer I guess it's my my slide doesn't quite show the bottom um so anyways

207what this is is the totals there's the other costs involved um what it some of the stuff that stayed the same I didn't bother to put on the slide and that's like the the bond fees the assistant all that stuff uh but one of the things that wasn't put into the original Bond measure were the architectural inspection fees anytime we do a DSA project it has to be inspected and also the um an architect is required um for actually drawing up plans Etc I don't know why it doesn't fit um so anyways we end up with uh with this plan it gives us about a a $655,000 plus Surplus uh with this next round under this this measure and what we're looking to do is that that that money will probably as in the last

208time will be spent eventually uh and if it is spent it gets spent back on the stuff that was Prior prior approval under um when the board originally approved the series okay so any questions I'll take them at this time we'll go ahead and go to public comment first thank you very much for the presentation Anderson no one online no one jumping up in the room so we'll go to the board for discussion on this item uh I don't have a question per se but I appreciate the work that you did on the uh kind of recycling or reusing the Spanish tile on the uh Auditorium for the PG Middle School was saved a bunch of money so appreciate the solution and it's historical so it's valuable one question I was going to have is

209with our um contract recently signed on the F the facilities master plan how much of that is there a possibility that some of that will also help inform the rep prioritization which again this is the portable I mean that's I assume alignment too but yeah um it actually when when the group was here uh working on the the facilities assessment working towards that facilities master plan uh it was amazing to find how much we were locked St in our in our frame of mind so I think we're absolutely going to be on the same P page so when when we actually get the master plan I think it's going to be right in line with what I'm trying to continue um the fire alarm system at Robert down yes my God why so much um

210it's it's a massive group of buildings and it's very costly uh again union labor um all very costly equipment and it would be much more if we weren't able to reuse the existing wire but we also as we upgrade it we have to bring it up to code um and so it's it's going to be fairly costly um and again these are just estimates and until we go out to bid and actually get bids back it could be more it could be less we'll find out thank you for this um and the other thing that kind of popped into my head is as you were talking about their estimates there's also the buildings are old so I'm going to go ahead and assume that sometimes you get in there and hopefully we can use the

211same the existing wire you know as with upgrading the systems and all that so um I'm just really grateful that you were able to rep prioritize and take a step back and look at um what needs to get done and What needs priority um thank you very much that was very well explained I appreciate that I'm glad to see the high school electrical is getting priority um I just picture the risk of harm associated with that existing on our campuses and the potential and it just feels urgent so however we got to getting it done I'm glad it's being prioritized now um I heard you mention that our our earlier estimates or prioritization listed not include DSA fees is that something we're g to um plan for moving forward given the certain types of projects

212we'll be having with all of the facilities work absolutely okay what is there an average DSA fee for a project um they're based on it's based on a percentage of the actual cost of the of the the project um but the good news is DSA fees is one of the few things that our government's done has actually gone down um they were considerably higher so as far as future planning that would be I think helpful to be a cost consideration yeah okay I wanted to well actually no I wanted to go ahead and see if anyone wanted to make a motion on approving this measur d project [Music] reprioritization actually I had one more question please jump in yeah um with any of like the roof codings or anything I don't know if there would

213be a use in this but could any of it be uh labeled like Energy Efficiency or you know for that next Bond there already are a title the the final white coating that you see is a Title 24 coating and the and the actual roof because of the way it's layered actually adds a slight r value it's it's like an R value of about five which isn't much but the the existing roof had you know an R value of zero so we do see a little bit of Energy savings and they are reflective coding and that that is a renewable every 10-year warrant that is basically you know 50 plus year warranty if you continually renew it so every 10 years you put another top coat on it's good to go so oh yeah that's

214also an important ad the the seagull population as we put those roofs in is decreasing at our campuses because the eggs roll right off it's hard for them to Nest on it they also because of the smooth surface as the rain you know pine needles and stuff the wind and the rain just washes it right off with our former Styler roof everything just stuck to him so okay seeking for motion if no one's greeing I'll go ahead and make a motion to approve at board sorry um recommendation oh second okay so moved by myself seconded by truste Wax and all in favor please say I I I I anyone against no and before we go on to item f I just wanted to take a quick temperature of the room how we're doing in terms

215of breaks does anyone need a quick okay I see at least one person so we'll go ahead and do a quick five minute break till um 9:18 I'll round up in this case we'll come right back we got four trustees and we will hopefully have five again shortly um so Buck you are up or thank you Pro president uh Hazen um my name is Buck Rogan I'm the Chief Human Resources officer for pgusd and I'm bringing forward tonight um a memorandum of understanding with pgta the Pacific grow Teachers Association to establish uh two coaching stiens at the high school one of which would be a head coach for the culinary team and another would be an assistant coach for that same culinary team um whenever there's a new Sion that gets uh developed for the

216district um those stiens go through uh a negotiations process with the district and the Pacific Grove Teachers Association and when the amounts are uh decided upon the memorandum of understanding is signed and then it comes before the board for approval so what you see before you tonight is uh that memorandum of understanding along with a job description for the head coach and a job description for the assistant coach that do we have thank you for the presentation do we have any public comment none in the room none online going to the board okay everybody's got eyes on me you got go for just on on stiens for these coaches in particular is it is there a ceiling for them how many you're going to you know I know they come up as the need arises

217this obviously a need um any more needs like this so the need is either brought forward by the by the district or it's brought forward by the uh but by pgta um this was uh I believe it was initiated by pgta and um the district agreed that it would be an appropriate activity to have a coaching stien so each coaching stien that's brought forward to us um is that that we decide the need based on the interest level of the students and not every single stien is funded meaning that if the interest level for an activity falls off and that activity is no longer needed then um it's no longer funded okay good reminder though okay okay with that I'll go ahead and look for a motion anyone willing to make a motion I'll make

218a motion I'll second the motion moved by clerk McNary and second Ed by trusty wax all in favor I I all opposed pass say 5 Z on to gou cssea benefit grievance resolution thank you what you have before you uh Tres is a uh memorandum of understanding that represents a resolution to agreements that was um filed by uh CA on behalf of its members um who had overpaid for the benefits that they were receiving from the district Whenever there is an issue like that we work with ccsa to resolve it it was brought to our attention on June 14 2024 and um uh assistant superintendent joran worked uh with his Finance team to you know identify the employees who had overpaid and were due um money back and so what you'll see is a spreadsheet

219that shows the um you know employee ID numbers of those um employees that were affected and the second column from the right um shows the total amount due to the employee for all the years that um the payment had been in in in correct the largest amount is in the neighborhood of3 $3,400 the majority of the amounts uh were under1 $100 for the total for those um uh years that were affected 20 21 22 22 23 and 23 20 24 we worked with the Union to come to this memorandum of understanding and um it just uh requires your approval here tonight okay any public comment online or in the room no and I will open up if it's okay start myself and just ask quick question we're voting on The Resolution but the payment has

220already occurred and it's already reflected in first inter terminal okay any other comments I am I appreciate that we have a process for filing gravan is and that an employee took the initiative and we're finding out this information but how do we are we able to present prevent this type of issue moving forward for our staff I think that assistant superintendent Jordan can speak to that best yeah what we found was um in our financial management system Escape there were uh there were Fields within that system that were a hard input data section that was not to be used there's another way to do this with I'm mean I'll use the term add-on but it's not actually add-on but basically every unit group member depending on their calendar number of months worked fraction of their

221FTE or full FTE we can assign The District Health and Welfare cap to them that way the appropriate way what was happening was um we had it in both locations and then payroll discovered that hard input error that occurred in 2018 I think is when it was yeah I think it was 2019 or 19 which affected the 2020 year forward they found that hard error input within the system they removed it which allows the system to calculate on its own based on our district Health and Welfare cap so we did resolve it from here forward um but it did take some digging in to find out why the system was doing what it was doing and we know now why Another Part Of Your question is what are we doing to try to discover things

222like this that might have happened in the past and I want to compliment um you know the payroll team um because they are auditing very uh various aspects of the payroll s system and they're discovering other dis discrepancies um and the district is fixing those as we as we go um this one requires the memorandum of understanding because it was part of the grievance process with CSA when we discover an error fix it on our own there's no grievance that comes with it but when it's brought to us from membership then we go through through this process and set up a formal way to correct that so yeah the the working relationship that we have with our unions is very close so it works out well for explaining that okay no other comments I will

223go ahead and make a motion to approve the resolution as presented second all second M by myself seconded by clerk andary all in favor I I any opposed passes 5- Z and now we're on to item H this is a fun one the mcba recommendation for new organizations correct so yes montre montree County School Board Association is seeking um any recommendations that you would like us to put forward uh I know it's a pretty comprehensive list as it stands already uh but if there are any others that you think of I can go ahead and collect those names that we can submit them uh for their upcoming uh Award of Excellence that they do annually I did not see on the list uh if I'm wrong please correct me um I would like to nominate

224prescrib safe and also Ohana hold that public comment oh excuse me no you're you're all good anyone in the public okay now the out I would like to nominate prescribe safe with uh Reb close and Casey Grover and also uh Ohana prescribed safe and Ohana I have got those two listed good any others that we would like to consider um I think kids connect special kidss connect or is a different special kids connect one last year and was really cool must be okay unless this is the unsp special kids but sure no all children are special exactly uh no I think that must have won okay special all right so so far we have prescribed safe Ohana and kids connect special kids connect but that special kids connect was on there so we just need

225to double check they won they won last year so they might they might not have been listed because they won and I think you have to be rein nominated so there's a request for second award um W in the past I guess I'll just mention that Mr ran won in 2008 if any of us forgot that oh wow okay with that um does everyone any feel good with prescribed safe and Ohana I'm happy to add those to the list or suggest they be added we don't get to actually so yeah I'll go ahead and make a motion to add those two organizations myself H get a second okay made the mo I made the motion and then Tristy wax can we correct that I would like to make the motion of course you may yes

226thank you Laura otmar made the motion executed by trusty wax all in favor I I any opposed no that passes five Z okay W item I that's yours Dr Adamson all right well this is really just our upcoming our board agenda dates and items uh the only uh proposed change that I am you know bringing forward to this evening is we have a special meeting that is on the calendar for next Thursday uh since we are you seeing no need uh to there's no items or nothing of any you know urgent um matter that needs to be brought forward I am proposing that we remove that date from our calendars for the month of December and then the only other proposal would be and I know we are looking currently at you know two possible

227dates uh for January to add a governance uh session uh with Lou Lano and Eric Andrews um and so I'm hoping we can you know be able to move they have both those dates I think it's the 27th and the 28th of January um if we were able you know the with the board's approval for us to be able to add one of those dates to the calendar for January okay anyone in the public would like to comment okay to the board I'm totally happy with that uh proposal I'd be happy to have Thursday back but also to say it will be important we get that January date so if we can add that as a placeholder that' be great um right and I think you know the sooner we can get from I almost

228all of you have have got so maybe before we leave tonight if you could we let me know most of you said both work for you I can get that approv you have a time it would be we'll look at like 5 to 10 you know 5:00 we'd start I mean we could start a little later if that works for everyone like 5:30 right maybe if that's I mean if we need it to even six o'clock if that's really you know ideal but and typically we don't always go all the way through till 10 right I mean we you know judge that as we go but yeah you want do it right now yeah just before we leave tonight yep we can add it on that'll be great can I ask a question about um

229the items listed on our agenda for tonight um one of them is the Williams complaint report the quarterly report um guess it wasn't on our agenda are we do we have a time when we're planning to have that that not on con was no it's I highlight in early well look at you thank you for keep your eye on the bow things um okay I'm comfortable with taking December 19 off and either of the January dates and thank you everyone for being willing to uh sign up for training and more meetings yeah all of us so governance is so valuable I agree and this will be an important one with you know obviously our two new trustees coming in going through our governance handbook and you know not as lengthy as we have I've already

230shared it with them and you know we'll kind of see we can frontload them a little bit before that night but yeah it's it'll be good to have consensus on that would anyone like to make a motion to approve the calendar with those one scratch and one ad I'll make the motion I get a second I'll second okay motion made by trust or clerk seconded by trusty otmar all in favor please say I I I opposed that passes 5 Z we're now into section I the information discussion we have an important presentation by Dr Larry hagquist on our new course offerings for the state good evening board uh Dr Larry Heist executive director of Educational Services I will be presenting with principal Greg Oma tonight on this topic we are going to be um discussing

231uh the course catalog at Pacific Grove High School and also some uh requirements that I brought to the September 5th meeting um for ethnic studies and personal finance so it's a little reminder that we've got some requirements uh and added classes that you're going to be seeing at the high school in coming years uh the first one is going to be ethnic studies that is going to be requirement next year 25 26 school year with a graduation requirement uh 2930 school year um just a reminder that for both of these courses model curriculum from the state is going to be available so it already is available for the ethnic studies course so um it really doesn't have to follow the traditional pilot process that you would see in other courses that don't have State uh

232model curriculum available I was just in a webinar today with superintendent Tony Thurman and several of his staff um talking about how they're in the process right now of developing the model curriculum for the personal finance course and they were taking input uh suggestions on some of the modules that that will be presented so that is currently in development that course will not have to be offered until the 2728 school year so three years from now with a graduation requirement 2030 31 uh this is just um our board policy around um the minimum graduation requirements which mirrors the state requirements and wanted to point out how uh PG pghs is unique in that we offer a one-year ninth grade geography course so our geog graphy course takes place over the entire year of 9th grade

233uh and it's not uh embedded necessarily into the US history and the world history which you see is outlined in the board policy right here and that just mirrors the the minimum State graduation requirement language um but this is great for our school district uh in implementing ethnic studies because we already have that ninth grade year and what we're going to be doing is taking ethnic studies and it's going to be replacing that ninth grade geography class for entire year uh in 25 26 as a rollout year we've been working very closely with um the teacher who's going to be delivering or or or um um teaching the ethnic studies course and um she's wanting kind of that rollout year to be um a year to feel out the curriculum so that she can really

234kind of decide the units so that when we pair it back into the semester offering um that she really has uh the units that are working for the students um uh the best and uh in a couple years we will be able to bring on the personal finance and potentially pair that uh personal finance class with the ethnic studies uh courses to semester courses um again that doesn't happen have to happen till 2728 um this is just C course catalog language um and just making the board aware that there's going to be new language and the new language is going to reflect the addition of the ethnic studies course which I want to reiterate is going to be a full year course next year uh uh eventually being paired down to a semester course um

235once we get the personal finance uh course going and we learn a little bit more about that which is being developed right now and I wanted to hand it over to principal omir who's gonna talk a little bit about the course catalog all right I'm gonna go ahead and just have Lewis Advance our slid if you all as uh as Larry mentioned I am Greg om principal of Pacific grow high school and uh as you know after reading it very carefully the course catalog is indeed 60 pages with a ple plethora of valuable information uh my task tonight is to condense uh those 60 pages into a six slide snapshot and just give you a kind of an eagles view of what we are offering at PG high and how um we we can ensure

236paths to success uh for our for our students in post 12 Arena um a as I've mentioned here on on our on our first slide or or the slide um the course catalog is is a road map uh that that leads our students through through various paths and choices um and and essentially um you know ultimately our hope is for a successful post K12 experience um over over the next uh you know few few slides my plan is to uh speak to four uh areas of emphasis which are outlined pretty carefully in the 60 Pages um and while there is some sequential uh there is a sequential piece to these four areas they are entwined throughout the entire document so um that that being said um we'll go on to the next slide I bring

237this slide to your attention as it lays out a visual comparison of the PG High graduation requirements Side by side with the CSU and UC uh a through G requirements um and just to refresh our Collective memory um the the vernacular that we are using to describe the subject area course requirements needed for the CSU UC admission consideration is commonly known as the a through G requirements the a requirement as you can see on the on the chart uh in front of you the a requ requirement refers to classes in the area of areas of history and social science the B requirement are those classes within the English area the C requirement refers to classes in the area of mathematics D refers to our classes in the areas of science both life and physical sciences

238the E area is the languages other than English or lot te or Lo the F requirement refers to classes in the area of visual and or performing arts and last but not least the G requirement refers to classes in the area of our College Prep electives now you you will notice that I was very intentional in Reading off those those a through G requirements uh the the reason for my intentionality is to is to mirror what we are trying to do at PG high and that is be as intentional and deliberate with our with our information around a through G requirements because the only way that we are going to increase our efficiency in that area is to be intentional and deliberate with our students and with our families and through my experiences working at

239other high schools um when we drill down to figure out why our percentages may or may not be where we want them to be in terms of a through 2G completion rates well guess where it all starts I didn't know about them I didn't know what they were my my my child hasn't communicated that to me or my counselor hasn't or my principal hasn't so we're trying to be as intentional as we possibly can with the delivery of that information and making sure that all of our students understand the a through G requirements now of note on this slide is a natural separation of the requirements to attain a high school grad graduation diploma and the requirements for uh immediate acceptance or consideration for immediate acceptance to a CSU and UC there is a natural

240separation and and a Continuum in in those requirements this being said we we assure you that no matter where a student is on this Continuum uh we are in fact providing a high variety of rigor and relevance to ensure that our students are successful in the College and Career um realm next slide please this slide gives a snapshot of our advanced placement and honors courses that we offer at PG High taking a look at the the number of offerings which which you may or may not have calculated on your own 17 AP courses 11 honors courses for a total of 28 um Advanced rigorous college level courses a little bit more about the actual advanced placement program or the AP courses the courses designated as AP um are in fact recognized by the College Board

241as college level classes these classes have specified curriculum and standards prescribed by the college board and there are tests to measure learning in in at the at the conclusion of these classes commonly referred to as the AP exams again offered by the College Board um and the the performance on these tests can can you know can steer a student in the direction of uh an admission admissions off officer's favor or not so uh there there's a level of subjectivity in terms of of U different admissions departments especially in the private schools uh but the the the designation of of performances on the AP test is very important I would like to offer uh some some very promising data around AP enrollment and AP testing at PG High uh when we look at the 2324 school

242year which obviously was last year we had 167 students enrolled in our AP courses across the various curriculums across across the offerings that you see uh in front of you here 167 students were enrolled in those courses those 167 students students signed up and took a total of exams those numbers sound pretty high and they are they're very they're very impressive and it also tells us that 281 being much higher than 167 those 167 students many of them took multiple tests so the uh the the rigor that these kids go through in the spring is is is tremendous so the data point that I wanted to just point out the comparison to the students enrolled in AP classes this year in 2425 we have actually increased AP enrollment by 39 for a total of 206

243students this year enrolled in our I AP program these 206 students are currently signed up to take a total of 320 exams in the spring of 2025 so I share that with you as as as as note and and and empirical evidence that that our AP program is in fact flourishing and is in fact growing in participation uh and in both enrollment and and U test uh test taking actually now i' I'd be happy to report back to the board perhaps later later in the spring or even in the fall of next year some longitudinal data around the the performance on these tests right because I'm I'm I'm citing numbers of of enroll enroles and c and setting numbers of test takers but you're probably wanting to know how they're doing right and so it's

244certainly a presentation that I'm prepared to give um at a later date next slide please all right dual enrollment um i' like to talk a little bit about dual enrollment um in our College and Career access Pathways our CCAP courses you see listed in front of you there uh our uh College and Career access Pathways courses are CCAP you know it's it's a dual enrollment program in California that allows high school students to take college courses at their high school and earn both high school and college credit uh CCAP Partnerships throughout the state are formed between school districts and local community uh Community College districts such as we have such as ours with MPC so so these Partnerships allow allow this dual enrollment to to happen on our campuses and it provides a a rigorous

245and and accelerated path in many cases uh to post K12 success as you can see here um PG High offers a robust variety of college level courses that that will provide access to the college curriculum and and subsequent college credit um and again providing providing rigor and acceleration to to to the to the college world uh please know our our our growth in CCAP offerings for uh 2526 actually include and I'll just have to turn here and and just point out sociology sociology 2 uh sociology 11 mass media and psychology are are are four additional dual enrollment classes that we've we've got on the docket for next year which we're we're super excited about next slide and I'm sorry I'm kind of flying through this and at the end of course I'll I'll F we'll

246field questions uh this slide around Career Tech education kind of gives a snapshot of yet another rigorous Avenue for our students uh for for post K12 success just to provide a quick summary of our Career Tech Pathways six separate CL uh Pathways that that embody 24 separate classes that that allow students to move through an introductory um course to a Capstone course um it's very important to point out that uh while while these classes can be taken in peace meal fashion especially in in the introductory levels we do encourage uh students to stick with a chosen program and and and reach that Capstone course and and and gain that certificate or or that that you know the document or the expertise that allows them to either receive further Advanced Training After High School or go

247directly into into a a role um for employment all right next slide our final slide and that is um just the highlights you know again very very brief Eagle overview of the course catalog which serves as our document our our road map for Success our guide that we land back on you know it's our it is our true north it is it is it is the do it is a living document there there will be changes as we move through the course selection process as we you know find out more about what students are w and asking us there there might be minor revisions but this is this is our this is our landing spot um some takeways that I'd like you you know like I'd like to share with you I I I hope

248to I hope that you'll you'll you'll leave with is is just an understanding that you know we do in fact have an extensive offering of honors and AP courses uh that demonstrate rigor and relevance um we have a dual enrollment program that allows immediate access and and acceleration to to to the to the college realm to the to the college world and allow students to you know gain um literally gain time and just the thought that you know our a combination of our a our advanced placement our our honors our our CTE our dual enrollment um we we offer a tremendous variety U of of rigorous opportunities for our students and you know last but not least um before I feel any questions um you know just you know coming from different districts that I've

249worked in um as an administrator much much larger schools much larger high schools and much larger districts um I'm amazed at the amount of variety and the amount of rigor we are able to offer our relatively low student population um to have this many avenues for Success um is is a testament to uh you know the staff at PG High the the dedication and the commitment to our you of our students and and our and our families holding us accountable for that rigor so uh just very impressive coming coming from from different um different roles in my career and just you know Landing here it's just very impressive what we can offer kids and Larry and I will take questions thank you so much Dr hackwest and principal May we'll start with public comment none

250online none in the room and we'll go quickly to the board I had a couple of questions um so going back to the state requirements that are changing um we offered geography for a full year and that's going to be paired back to to semester oh and then and replaced with ethnic studies so is that correct that's a great question um if you I went fairly quickly through it if you look at the board policy language that matches the um Ed code language uh of minimum graduation requirements and I've also done a comparison of local districts um around here and schools across California most of them offer geography within the uh US history so it's US history and geography and it's world history culture and geography um so we were quite unique in having an

251entire year uh of geography um for for many years now um but it create an opportunity for us to have a course where we can you know lay over that that geography class and and go more traditional geography in the other courses right and so the teachers have already done the work to um you know make those changes to their um course descriptions and then um as far as so to replace that well we not replace obviously it's moving but we'll be having ethnic studies in a single semester and then the following semester would be personal finance is there a reason why we can't have ethnic study for an entire year and the reason I asked that is because in the culture of we that we're supporting and especially in Pacific Grove where such we

252have such limited uh experience with different ethnicities I think it would be something to look at that we are giving our kids an education that's a little bit more broad than a semester this is just me thinking out loud and it also seems odd that it's um personal finances being paired just after ethnic studies like there's is it was it kind of a space issue or issue we um we actually offering ethnic studies for an entire year and that's something that we made an agreement with the the teacher to uh be doing that next next year I mean in the continuing years and in the continuing and it would be two years later that we have to add the personal finance course but one of the things that we were you know talking about was

253just you know adding FTE um is always a consideration too um so um you know that that was part of the discussion right there is like not increasing the FTE load so I mean yeah it's a combination of both right I mean we ideally we'd love to be able to you know offer it as as a full year the requirement is a semester um it it does come down to we having to now create you know and add a new course uh if we don't do it this way we absolutely would have to add you know now hire another teacher um and you know that's just part of the the larger discussions right as we're looking at at budget and all of that for next year here I'm just speaking to local and our you

254know surrounding districts that was one of the topics we had with MPD and comma when I met with both superintendents last week and this is exactly what they're you know planning on doing as well um and most districts within the county you know that it's just it's a suggestion that's been given and you know it seems to work so yeah okay um and then I just another question was I noticed in the AP offerings that there's human geography um so will ethics replace that AP Human Geography course or will that AP class remain our hope is that it remains I it was it was it was a request from our staff to to to revisit that offering and so we wanted to make sure we got it on the docket this year um and so

255yeah I mean we we always want to offer as many as we can um you know the the caveat here um just to be totally transparent is that you know we we have offerings then we have um course selections and then from those numbers we look at courses we can actually run yeah right and so I I wish we could run a full you know everything everything that was on those slides you know we can't and it ends up not not running a few of them they'll end up running just because of numbers but yeah okay okay um and then my final thing and this is just to throw it out there jump in real quickly only because of the time and say need to propose an extension of the meeting to make it through

256if folks are okay proposing we go till 11: which includes the close session and I hope hope hope we will not take that whole time but I want to propose that because otherwise at 10 o'clock we have to stop so we'll come back to your question right after this we are folks okay saying 11 is our absolute drop dead yeah I move that we extend our meeting to 11 I'll second um all in favor com that we extend to 11:15 so that we don't have to go through this again in case it gets goes later yeah we can't go again so that's okay are folks okay with 11:15 is it absolute she's amending the motion I would like to amend the motion so that um we end the meeting at 11:15 I'm okay with that

257can I have a second anyone would anyone like to second that second okay all in favor say I I I all opposed okay it passes 5- Z okay thank you please go back to your last question sorry so this was just at csba um I was talking to these this group and they had um a tiny house there that was built by high school students and so maybe this is something that could come in the future but since it's we're talking about it now but having a CTE course that focused on um construction or Home Building or something of that nature I think would be really really cool because it would serve a population of students that may be more inclined to um work with their hands and build um that's all I have thank

258you very much for bringing this all yours well Larry I'm so disappointed about geography because I am a geography major when you said that I go yes wow and then he went no we're going to still there still there okay and Human Geography it reminds me also this ethnic studies like um I took a class at MBC called cultural anthropology it's very similar to that like a mix of geography and ethnic studies because it was about well anthropology all these different cultures anyway um what I really want to know is okay so the state is putting together this ethnic studies curriculum we will buy that correct we're not going to impose our own curricul we're going to buy the state's curriculum it there's no cost to the state curriculum right but I mean we we're

259not creating our own curc no so we we we're using the the state's curriculum and we're developing modules that are Guided by the state's curriculum we are working with Community partner groups to review the curriculum um and take suggestions from those Community partner groups so ultimately the class that the teacher teaches is going to be based on the state curriculum um with input from Community Partners so I'm GNA ask the hot question is it going to have CRT in it okay because and the only reason I'm asking that is because I've been asked you check that out you're on the board you go check that out um so I'm just putting it out there we should you know be prepared for those kind of questions um and then the other thing U the other question

260I had is are most dual enrollment classes taken by AP students or or or not is that a a student may be enrolled in AP and then also be enrolled in a dual enrollment course they are both considered college level rigor yeah however the AP program designed and offered by the College Board is a year-long course with the culminating exam in the spring the dual enrollment courses are actually one semester in length but give one one year's worth of high school credit they coexist yeah they coexist and they um they offer they offer something for for um two different paths for an advanced advanced curriculum okay just a lot of stress and you know um the last thing I'll just say well two things one I I've mentioned this to the superintendent before but we

261really need to promote our high school we need this information to be out there like you said this is a really good high school we compete with any private school we're just as good if not better so um we need to promote ourselves um the other thing uh I'll end with is just um I'm interested in vocational testing of students because I feel like you know that's such such an important piece that may or may not happen and because a teacher maybe has a hey let's take this test and see if you have a vocational aptitude here or there but I think it's so important for young people to start to get an idea of who they or what their talents are they don't have to invent their talents but their job is to uncover

262their talents and that's hard you know so I'm just throwing that out there even at the middle school I think this would be helpful like you're talking about how are these parents and students going to you know guide themselves with where they're going to go even you know in high school so um I'm just throwing it it there thank you thank you go ahead yep um I'm with Beth on the promoting and cheerleading about the high school um and this presentation I think is a great starting point because as a parent it's clear and concise and you know spells out exactly what we're doing and we do have great things to offer you know a lot of different kinds of kids who are coming through our system um and I'd love for there to be

263a way that we can be the ones creating the message about the school um and sharing that with our families and empowering our students to figure out their a through G classes as well um yeah thank you for the information too because here we are getting it in a public form so we as a board can know um what we're speaking to thank you I'll agree with that same promotion piece and um risking stepping back but you know the presentation previously on facilities is another great opportunity to do that just to make sure we put these things together um a few quick questions with one that came these both came up to me here as apologies for um being a little off the cuff but when geography is replaced by the yearlong ethnic studies how

264are you going to integrate it into the 11th and 12th 13 10th 11th and 12th grade history courses if that makes sense are you going to do that every year or starting next year will all of those three courses have geography integrated in them does that make sense into the history courses the geography will be integrated into it's going to be us history and geography world history culture and geography and yeah will that but that will that be done next year so that what I'm saying is that means that the ninth graders currently in geography will have extra dosage which should make Beth happy of geography in their career yes and Dr hegs can you just confirm that that is already part of the state standards for those subjects it's already embedded in curricul we're

265not changing that curriculum we're just extra okay that's great to know okay the other question I was going to have is actually on the the sports you had listed in the curriculum as well I had heard there was possibilities of maybe including flag football and field hockey is that still possibilities not and I say or is what I'd heard yeah there there there is interest um amongst our community um to implement a flag football team and I I I fully support that um I just came from a high school soel high school across the bay here that you know had had the same interest start starting with a hand a handful of folks that wanted to play football and two years later we had we had we had a full-fledged flag football team there is

266a process uh sort of a Kind almost almost an application process uh through ccs and through the pcal the league which we uh compete athletically um but if if you know if there is interest and it's brought forward um I'll I'll I'll be a big cheerleader for for that so um get get the word out awesome absolutely um in terms of the dual enrollment I think principal om you mentioned that you surveyed the students or you survey the students to find what they want to do or to see what cles they would like to take is that right or basically how do you determine that next year sociology and psychology are going to be added oh got it got it so so so we have this comprehensive document the the course catalog right and we

267we we try to to to offer a variety of rigor and relevance like I mentioned through all these different path Pathways and options um our master schedule our teaching master schedule is is driven uh in a large part by student selection and you know when we give them all these offerings and they start literally signing up for for classes to to build their you know their six seven or eight period day um we take those we take those numbers and and just literally find what classes are going to fly or what classes are going to run obviously if only three students sign up for any particular class it's it's financially uh um not going to happen we we just we can't we we also have the human resources and the budget piece of our master

268schedule um so so it while while we while we have the these wonderful offerings unfortunately we can't offer and run uh when when classes start in August of 2025 um what what what will what will be offered at the school is is what the most kids sign up for in a nutshell very very simplified nutshell um I'd also like to Second uh trusty aar's feelings about um adding or looking into a CTE for construction and um more trades basically more trades uh and less professional CT or not less I want to keep these CTE programs but just looking into the options of that yeah absolutely any last minute ones or if not I think the direction would just be to bring this back to us that right for fin or that's it this is informational

269I would need yes okay then there is no Direction I'll cross that off sorry about that okay then we move on to Item B of the information which is theot oh thank you so much for the presentation sorry Dr h on principal mayor no um the mot quarterly project update by director Anderson I'm back good evening everybody um in interest of time I'm GNA do fast as I can he's already on the second slide wow there we are okay so obviously that's what we're talking now you go to the next slide so I start out with measure D um four projects got have been accomplished since the start of the school year this is this is all the stuff I've done since summer so um now we've got the stadium lights in it it's quite

270a lift they're in there they're beautiful we've got better coverage on the field and less coverage in the neighborhoods so that should be a win-win um we have the electric ranges instead of gas ranges in the basement uh culinary at the middle school which is a much safer condition now um too bad uh well anyways when I first came here one of the things that came up was this ramp at the back of the PAC I was introduced us did you know there's a hole in the floor um in order to put this ramp in there and get that corrected we had to stop water intrusion um and then we had to fix the remediate the issue then we had to fix the floor then we had to put the ramp back the good news

271is it's finally done it took four steps but we have stopped the water intrusion and we actually have a viable ramp at the back of the p and at Robert down in the Kwing the Kinder Wing we have some beautiful HVAC systems now uh the previous HVAC system used to recirculate the the hot air like within close proximity of the the recirculation and we were just basically pushing air around in circles and I don't know if you could see up here but this the heat now gets pumped into the middle of the room it is a thousand times better than it was I've been monitoring the temperatures there and they are perfect next slide okay in-house deferred maintenance Josh talked about deferred maintenance and this is this is our fund 14 right yeah fund 14

272um so this is and all these projects were done with our own in-house crew this is our guys and girls doing the work these are our maintenance crew our bus drivers our grounds people doing doing the work out there for us and you'll see at the last my last slide where we talking about the financialist it's where we get the most bang for our buck they're a great team and I love them um so anyways what we have is one of the Hot Topics was the bathroom stalls so you don't know what I went through to get Bathroom stalls but I finally got what I asked for instead of what people tried to sell me um which is unbelievable um anyway so over in the top left and well just the left side that's the

273Middle School JY uh again this was aord coordinated effort uh we demoed the stuff we had the walls painted the ceiling painted and our custodial staff cleaned the tile then we rolled back in and put the new new dividers in and they're gorgeous on the right side you see the bathrooms at the high school we were able to get one of the two bathrooms done that we intended we'll try to pick up the other one during President break U again new paint cleaned tile bathroom stalls in much more improved um this kind of yucky but if you see the about the urinal dividers that was big hit uh what the companies wanted to sell me is exactly what used to get ripped off the wall uh we kind of I did an in in-house design

274my own pencil sketch and came up with a plan to do something was much more robust I don't think they're going to be able to pull these off the wall um ibay Lighting in the robotics lab and the art area at the high school starting the the original LEDs were starting to burn out and we find because of the high failure rate we found a better product to installed those we added um additional lights to at the pool for flood for the um got to remember that um anyways water polo thank you uh we did a lot of tree pruning uh really opened up the area at the high school and then a little bit down uh Hill Hill Crest right here um at the corner by the middle school our buses were starting to

275hit a lot of those branches and then we have down here in the middle a little pilot project and we've been putting in a lot of like with our new Landscaping we're starting to test things and what we found is we put the decomposed granite in that the the stuff that holds it all together with our damp environment gives up rather quickly the kids run through it more often than they should and it tends to disperse the the composed Granite so we started experimenting with adding an aggregate to it and some dye and so there's a little spot over by the tennis courts where it's holding together pretty nice and so we're going to going to work that out next slide okay um so this is stuff that we actually sent a contractor to do

276it's stuff that was a little bit beyond what we could do in in a timely manner um on the left we have uh the cross country course that was introduced over at the David Avenue campus title Title 9 compliant it really helps us out a lot and it's beautiful so now there's a whole track that you could run I think it's a full mile track isn't it yeah 1.7 miles beautiful uh Forest Grove in the back that whole area was starting to get engulfed in um janesta which is an invasive plant and also poison oak it was no place a kids should be so we paid to have several trees taken down and the area mulched and then we had the trees rounds lined up to save money and to create a path so the

277kids can run through there it's beautiful um Adult School many years ago they started a project doing the flooring there never got completed and the offices had like basically duck tape on the floor um and the paint was some of the original paint it was horrible uh so now barbar's offic is and all the admin offices are gorgeous there and that to me that was really important because that's the first place when someone walks in to sign up they walk in and what do they see duct tape on the floor not good so that's looking way better uh also in support of the adult school we had the pickle ball courts painted over our tennis courts so a lot of activity going on there um batting cage over at the adult school between the sou

278of the M Municipal uh baseball field and and the playground area uh we took advantage of three trees fell down there open up some space so we stuck a batting cage in there for softball also Title 9 compliant um and unplanned but had a little slightly windy day in October and a bunch of tree branches started falling from some dead trees so I took them out while the kids were gone um and then taking advantage of a plumbing problem over at the bsp at Robert down um we had a plumbing problem we cameraed it found out we had a bigger problem than we wanted and since we had to tear up the floor to replace the pipe we're remodeling one half for the bsp as we speak next slide there we are and now the

279financials so put it in a spreadsheet form so it's easy to read we don't have to go over all the dollar figures but as you can see from the middle those uh those in-house deferred maintenance projects that we do with our own staff look at the prices we're paying because we're already paying for the labor they're already here they're already working we just take them off work quarters for a little while and they go to town so all good news and I did that as fast as I could out of there good okay go out to public comment okay board comment or board discussion yay right on I've got some bad news there's two third graders at my house that are apparently signing a petition to get a petition to get partitions in between the

280urinal so I got that covered so yourself those those partitions we took out at the high school there were some of them that were marginal and so we saved them and I told the guys I said I bet you dollars to Donuts someone's going to ask for more urinal partitions so we're literally cutting those down cleaning them and installing them at rubber down don't tell them I told you because they're very excited about the petition I already got the part I already got it so sign the petition first literally got that this morning and have the plan already to take care very cool again reuse recycle you know the whole deal right on man okay that's awesome uh no just just like the ruing at the PG Middle School I really love like how uh

281solution-minded and like basically you add benefit to your projects like the Fel trees and you're creating a pathway and um it's just really smart and I appreciate you thinking about things that way so thanks um I have a question of the stadium what's going on with the um the the lift that goes up to the bleachers for the handicapped is that so um that is another project that that has been achieved it is in the final process right now we're waiting for State approval to be able to bring that back into use so yeah that's that's this close to being done okay thanks I can't claim it yet but I will as soon as I can okay thank you yeah thank you so much for such a great presentation okay item C quickly we have

282the csba annual conference there's probably not many people listening hopefully they'll watch it on YouTube to hear about what we learned and this one I will actually just go around if that's okay to um maybe start on the far side of that's okay trusty work to put you on the spot just highlights something you'd like to share um yes it's 10:20 but it was a great it was a great week I learned a lot about you and I or not just ellot I learned a lot about everyone and I appreciated uh the breakout sessions uh I learned uh many things related to uh science of reading and and Workforce housing and uh Arts programs so it was a great beneficial trip so I appreciate it okay um well I think the you were probably the

283only one that wasn't at the anxiety one yeah because the rest of us went to an anxiety Workshop that we really were impressed with uh and kind of hope to bring it here uh as um a project um other than that uh what else was there I thought we were going do this another meeting but so I didn't really prepare um but it was like you said it was such a good time to be relaxed and be with each other uh get to know each other and um you know have a sense of how we're going to be together so I appreciated that thank you I think I can just ditto what you both said um it was it's it's great every time this time felt um it felt like they offered so many topics

284that I was interested in and that I felt that we could bring back here and I mean it just felt like everything really fit um John when you were talking there's there is a a woman that has something called the happiness lab and being happy at work and and being driven by something that you're passionate about that's what I was thinking about when when you were talking you can see the joy in your face when you're talking about um the things that you're doing so it's that kind of stuff bringing that stuff it's already happening but you know um and just being with all of you and getting to know you both um it was great you know now that I like spinach and Brussels sprouts cream spinach anyway um but it was nice and

285I really enjoyed the time together and I'm I'm I'm grateful for how much I learned and how much I was able to bring back ditto on all um that was said and I agree trusty shamas I'm looking forward to having more conversations around anxiety and student mental health and these issues that impact all of us and we got to view as one of our sess a breakout session a documentary called anxiety Nation um and after watching that it felt like the room was just a buzz with conversations and ideas and it it felt like a great starting point um and it felt like a comfortable starting point if you aren't comfortable talking about anxiety or your child's anxiety or these things that are really impacting all of us so I think other than the team

286bonding and getting to know everyone a bit better and getting really excited about the work we're going to do um I think I'm GNA focus on being more honest about anxiety um I got it I've missed a board meeting because it's been really really hard before and it would be no different than if I broke my leg out running and couldn't make it because I had an injury so I think you know I'll start with myself and it's real and it's real for our kids and it's something we just need to keep in the Forefront because it's important so yeah well said and high five on the record there um I'm going to do like many of the presenters didn't go really fast through this and just mention a few things that stuck in my

287head um ABC unified was talking about their CTE offerings and since that came up they were saying that apparently um film is on the way down and there they're right in La near Hollywood so they're having less enrollment that but that Health Sciences particularly Med teexs are on the rise and eating so that's something just thought was useful to hear from Big District things that we might want to be ahead of uh velia you unified had a really great presentation on basically how they won their golden gavl award and turn their District around in you know in their own words and one was a reminder that the board sets the what and the superintendent sets the how so it's a good just quote that got stuck in my head for governance the last point I'll

288mention because I it's also I think something I don't do enough on here is that um there was a quote from Deming that was every system is perfectly designed to get the results it gets so it's important for us not just to think about the new things we want but if we're not happy with the results are we willing to change parts of the system and not throw out everything but like probably you know we shouldn't always just be adding things we should probably be critically looking at some of the things we might want to um tone down but otherwise it was awesome to get to know everybody and those that I already knew get to know better and just have that opportunity to really think about um you know what we could could and

289want to do as a district so so I think I keep talking then yeah do you want to add anything quickly I mean you know where I stand on it but I just I want to just commend the five of you I mean I've you know I'm some of my colleagues were there from other districts and you know they maybe had two trustees and some of them left on the last day and you were all there committed the full you know and and there from the beginning to the end you know and and excited about it I think that's that's the thing that I'm just you know that just makes it a pleasure and you know you mention it you know trusty you we bring the joy right that we want to see in the

290work that we do and you all BR brought that with you and I that's what you know made it so enjoyable and that's what's going to allow us to really uh you know benefit from what we learned and what we're taking away from that so just thank you all so then on to the last before our second close session um future agenda items this is again just a recommendation if there's anything we wanted to add I think some things going been discuss but I think we also have some items coming up that might help us refine that but I'm happy to go around if anyone wants to add anything just grab your mic or raise your hand okay yes trusty shamas um I was thinking about your suggestion about um did we want to add

291any more committees to our plate and one you know as we were going through the meeting and I was looking at the student board member and I was thinking oh maybe it'd be cool to have a committee with the student board member you know and and one of us or two of us and maybe one or two of his um you know student body reps U meeting a few times during the year just as a committee because um lot of times I feel like okay I I get that and and Dr Heist said that well they get preparation and everything but they don't get a lot of time with us in that way they're they're just kind of over there so that's just a suggestion I thought throw that out there for a possible future

292agenda item I maybe I could write up something that you know that details what I'm thinking and just throw it out there to you guys sounds great yeah and we do have a web form for putting on the future agenda items which is a great way to do it but I you know I like that idea and I like with some of the work that's already going on at the high school with the um Advisory Group that might be a way to tap into that and think about options maybe even a student i' be willing to be on okay okay excellent and I Al so you know I meet with the the student um with you know William poy the day typically the day before in fact it's both uh principal Amir and I you

293know to kind of go over the agenda and kind of you know front load and and get a sense of um you know what we're doing so I mean that there's a Avenue there possibly right where you know maybe it's one of one of you you know sort of rotating to join for that kind might be kind of you know neat and I mean perhaps and I I don't want to speak for principal am but it could be that we have one or other students join during that from leadership because I think we meet during their leadership class um and that could provide an opportunity you know that way you know there's something there right but we could definitely talk more about that I like the thinking with it yeah going once going twice not

294we will adour into second close session at 1028 for
