we are opening this may 19th pacific grove unified school district board of education meeting it's 5 30 and we shall begin first thing um we will do roll call please president vice president here [Music] here trustees for brian swanson here here thank you very much you can see please that we will have one board member attending virtually and four are here so we will have things done this evening by roll call vote and we move on please to adoption of the agenda we do need to go through the teleconferencing script oh yes i have that right here let me go through that teleconferencing script i would like to announce for the record that is being conducted pursuant to california government code section 54953b concerning teleconferencing of meetings board member carolyn swanson is participating in this
meeting by speakerphone from her vehicle in the parking lot which is a white tesla and it is outside at 435 hillcrest avenue pacific grove in accordance with the brown act this location has been identified on the agenda for this evening and i would now like to ask board member carolyn swanson to respond to the following questions are you able to hear our proceedings on this end yes do you have a copy of the agenda for this meeting yes has the agenda been posted at your location yep is your location such that any member of the public could participate in the public portions of this teleconference meeting from your location yes members of the board are you able to hear board member carolyn swanson yes yes okay so thank you because we're going to be having
the meeting with teleconference all actions as i mentioned previously will be a roll call vote in my eagerness i've mentioned the adoption of the agenda and now it's time move to adopt we do have some changes we have some changes that we need to go over please thank you very much um very briefly uh you did receive a list of this on an update for you and we'll be posting these on the website um the uh revisions to the packet consent a uh we made a correction in the minutes you also have these in your blue folder so they're available for you as well but there was a notation that some of the minutes were an error we made those corrections already on consent i um we re worded the cover to be correct with
the contract stating that the wave program would serve all students in the pg usd boundaries so i think it was important to make sure they understood that even if it's a charter school or private school if it's in the boundaries those students would be served by the program that correction was made on the cover sheet and then consent s we made a correction so that the document lists correctly synergy as a contract existing with synergy and rather than having delete denise on as the district contact it became carly adams who is the person that is now going to be coming in in denise's space so those are all corrected um you do not necessarily need to pull them if you don't want to but it's certainly up to you as the board and then last
but not least consent item h at the request was pulled um because there was a supplemental contract that was requested to be added that we typically use but was not listed so consent item h will need to be moved to action and you can move that actually wherever in action you'd like to place it that's it okay a lot of excitement with that all right with those changes noted for everyone um any other questions from the board comments okay so adoption with said changes i'll make a motion to adopt the agenda with uh the changes as discussed second okay they it was voted on by trustee brian swanson and seconded by trustee carolyn swanson do we have any um we did i didn't ask public comments i didn't see public but virtually do we have
anybody with questions i want to make sure okay thank you so much so we have the motion in second so roll call vote please yes hi okay motion carries 5-0 so the agenda has been adopted tonight in closed session the topics we will be talking about will be planning and preparation for meet and confer classified confidential as with the adult school we will also be working on superintendent goals and evaluation and public comment on closed session topics that's later yes are there any public comments no public at this time no comments therefore all right it all makes sense okay we're ready to adjourn to closed session signal yes the first thing we want to do this evening which uh trusty path has reminded me as we want to take a moment of silence please for
buffalo and just have a moment uh for reflection for empathy and sympathy for what's going on at times in our country thank you very much we'll go ahead now please and we're going to open this meeting after our closed session which we have before meetings and we want to report out that we dealt with planning and preparation for meet and confer classified confidential also for adulthead we did superintendent goals and evaluation so information was received direction given and we receive no action for tonight um we're very delighted to have two wonderful students here this evening in our transition so would you guys do me the honor of leading us in the pledge of and to the allegiance for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all already the teamwork
was quite evident very very impressive thank you so much all right um we're going to start off today with the recognition after i gave you your little intro of gabriella how do i pronounce that guyana thank you so much and we've been here how do we normally do this let me say sweet words that's what we do well let me do it it's i feel like your position is so valued for us because you're the conduit between us and the students everybody in this room is here because of students and our deep love and respect for the institution of education so it's especially evident in small towns because you start with little preschoolers in in some of these spots and watch you guys go all the way up last night was the senior senior honors
recognition night of of all the things that people are doing and going in scholarships and to have you represent that keep us in the loop as far as what's going on in the high school what to expect uh has been invaluable so thank you so much and obviously you've served as president as well so what a huge credit you've been to the school and to the district as a whole so thank you so much so let's hear words are nice but just know there's cake in your future because to me that's what really matters ultimately that's what really matters okay and next we're going to move on to recognition of retirees yeah i'll pass it on to uh director mankey it's so nice to see so many students here today exciting now it's on good
evening our retiree recognition is virtual this year and each administrator will say a little bit about their uh the retirees at their sites so we'll go ahead and start with barbara martinez who i know is also virtual this evening hi everybody so glad to be here tonight i wish i could be there in person but i can't um so i have the privilege to introduce sarah weber who's retiring from pacific grove adult ed after seven and a half years what you may not know is that sarah actually began serving our students in as a substitute teacher for all grades pre-school preschool through high school and during this time she's taken many long-term guest teacher assignments i'm just going to name them erica chavez at the middle school tombuzzio at the high school elena dybolt at
community high school and i say that just because teachers trust her and know her and ask for her because of the positive positive relationships that she has with not only them and the students so teachers would call her and ask her directly to work for her and then when we needed a teacher to fill in at the adult school in our esl department sarah gladly accepted and filled in until such time when she accepted the high school diploma and program specialist position you know through the last couple of years and through kovid sarah's worked so hard at the adult school to try to motivate and she did successfully our high school diploma teach us students who have you know done whatever they could to learn and and get their credits through distance learning we've had
creative and very fun drive-by graduations and she just really gave that one-on-one encouragement most of all sarah's going to be missed not only at the adults at the adult school but just know that she's not a stranger you know she's going to substitute and she's going to continue to work for our community and she's often she can often be seen out and about in our community with fellow retired staff that are their luncheons and she's very present so sarah congratulations on your retirement i'm so excited for you and thank you for everything that you've done for adult ed and for the district great thank you principal martinez next i'll um invite uh assistant principal shane steinbeck out everybody good evening i have the honor to uh present our three retirees vivian bliss kathy bowler and
todd bowler combined 83 years of service i'll start talking about vivian bliss here first 26 years of service in the special education department working with our most vulnerable groups she's beloved by all the students and staff she was my neighbor for 11 years in the kl wing and personally just one of really my best friends at the school um never too high never too low she stayed right in the middle if i ever was having a bad day i'd go and kind of hang out in vivian's room and she's always like the voice of reason you know super super well respected by everyone throughout the community steady and reliable calm and a true fat friend so thank you so much for your 25 years of service vivian bliss [Applause] a kathy bowler 26 years of
service um within those 26 years have been the backbone of the world language department um the word that comes to mind when i think of kathy is bubbly um she's always running around um just with a smile on her face she's one of the teachers when i became an administrator that we're always you know trying to get the teachers out and about a break or lunch she's always out to break her lunch because that's just the way she is you know and as an administrator i've always appreciated that about her um if i'm ever having a bad day or really any staff you go up to kathy and you're gonna end up having a conversation and leaving with a smile on your face um always out and about making connections with the students that was
really her thing very very successful tennis coach too i might add so thank you so much kathy bowler for your 26 years of service and last but certainly not least todd bowler 32 years of service in the district um bulldog as we affectionately call mr buller i can be sitting in my office in a-wing and hear him talking to his kids out of the tennis court clearly and loud and clear he just has that thing about him he served as obviously a pe teacher athletic director um coach basketball and football i hope i'm not skipping anything's there though but he had a great coaching career as well and assistant principal i want to say he was assistant principal for two possibly three years for our district right before mr keller stepped in always there for
you when you need them through the best teacher parties of all times i could say that about kathy as well and he he will truly be missed as as as will kathy and vivian so please give it up for todd bowler as well now i invite principal rocha to honor his retirees thank you billy sean roach principal of pacific grove middle school and i took this opportunity to write some stuff down because i could really go down a rabbit hole with some of the stories that we've had with these three um amazing individuals so i'll start with jamie lawrence uh when i took over at pgms janie was such an important part of my learning process her help learning the processes were was a godsend and something that janie i'll ever be grateful for she's
got a talent for making kids feel safe and at ease which is really the key to how effective that she was she's one of the most dedicated people that i've had the pleasure of working with and she is still held in the absolute highest regard at pgms she was never one to gather moss and janie always is on the go and i'm sure she's taking full advantage of her time hiking and biking exploring and traveling so please join me in celebrating miss jamie lawrence [Applause] kelly terry you know it's funny when you think back on a colleague you remember kind of the weirdest thing so kelly terry was absolutely the best artist i think i've ever seen um and it makes sense for her to be in science so she's illustrated in scientific publications and
she used this gift to make science come alive for her students she's still my daughter's personal favorite teacher at pgms and from environmental detectives to her adoration of rocks and science school she imparted a love of science through to high school and beyond i have no doubt that kelly's scientific illustrations and lessons will find their way to our students someday miss terry i miss you and you're the best please join me in celebrating the career of miss kelly terry [Applause] uh bonnie peeper um this is gonna be a tough one um anyone who knows bonnie peeper knows that she is an absolute angel um she currently serves as a students as a special education instructional assistant but she really helps everybody who asks and anyone who asks she's a positive kind loving person who students
and adults both are drawn to she just has that that it she has a raw sense of humor privately and she's keenly intelligent and compassionate for her students i can't tell you how many times that i've had a brief conversation with her and it absolutely changed the trajectory of my day she just has that power that gift um so even though we're gonna miss her quite a bit and pgms will not be the same without her we all wish you the best bonnie in your retirement and i can't wait to see you again bonnie peeper [Applause] and next we have principal rogerman good evening trustees it is um my honor today to talk a little bit about our retirees betty miner and marlene roman who combined to have 85 years of experience in uh pg
usd first like to talk about um betty betty miner who uh has served in our schools for 50 years the last seven of which i got to know her as our office staff who would cover the lunch hour when one of our office staff was out doing supervision and then our other was outed out at lunch and one of the great things about betty is that just like any employee who you would love she would come into the office and instantly make it a better and more happy place betty brings joy with her where where wherever she goes intelligent strong are the first two words that i think of when i think of betty and i tell you what when i get to be betty's age she is a role model for us all i'm
still strong vibrant and um just an absolute joy to be around when you get to see her so 50 years of service in pg usd we give our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to betty miner and marlene roman plays that pivotal role of taking care of the students who have to come a little bit early or stay a little bit late after school she's been running the ba srp program at forest grove as long as i've been there and i have to say that in the seven years that i've been there i can maybe count it on two hands the times that she's had to call the office to get some assistance and so uh that's a pretty good record when students are kind of at the end of their chain as far as patience goes
at the end of the day marlene roman always had some great interactive activities for them to do and when they're sleeping might be a little cranky in the morning at seven o'clock she had a nice quiet uh place for them to arrive and start to get themselves ready for uh school more than that just like uh you know a lot of people that work at our school i think the um the love that marlene roman had for the children that she works with are really what are going to set her apart and make us remember her for a long long time she ran a great daycare program at forest grove and marlene roman we're going to miss you so thank you next i'd like to invite principal keller ford good evening board and if i
may um you know this is my 22nd year in the district and i've gathered a lot of friends over the time so i'd like to thank bonnie peeper for uh all the flowers that she used to provide to the pghs graduations i'd like to thank um uh kelly terry for being my own boys teacher it was a pleasure having your three kids in my classroom uh to vivian michael this is a tough one she was my very first partner in special ed at the high school thank you vivian it's an honor to have your granddaughter at my school and she'll be well taken care of to kathy and todd buller i don't know what to say we had so many years together and um todd uh you know you and i we we had just
so many moments of adding beautification days at the high school breaking water lines together that was my fault not yours todd but i just have so many memories of the two of you so thank you so much for everything you do tonight at robert down our four are robert down retirees the first retiree i'm honoring is uh pam chrislock and again a person dear to my heart pam krishna retired earlier this fall after 28 years of service in pgusd before coming to robert down as an instructional assistant and new duty extraordinaire she worked at forest grove and during her district tenure led the after-school enrichment or ase program for many years pam it has been an honor and privilege to know you work with you teach your daughter and serve with you on a jury
thank you for your time as a falcon and otter and our schools are fairly forever be your home thank you japan chrysler for uh laura rivera who's one of our speech pathologists i asked laura what she would miss about robert down she said as far as what i will miss about working at rhd it's everything this has been an amazing experience i will miss the butterfly parade the handprints on the walls even the foggy morning recess duty well maybe not that so much the incredible staff all of the students and their grins giggles and hugs i've had the privilege to work with the most amazing and caring sped team and most of all i will miss the robert down family i feel i have made some lifelong friends laura rivera began her educational journey in
0261984 in fort dodge iowa after graduating from north east missouri state university now known as truman university the same university as actress jenna fischer better known for her role in the office just so you know laura moved on to bakersfield california in 1987 where she worked at the standard school district until 1993 the richard development center from 1993 to 2000 and greenfield unified until 2010 after a two-year stint up in redding california at alter alta mesa full inclusion preschool we have been blessed to have ms rivera with us at robert down i will miss your incredibly short iep meetings aka the fastest ieps in the west all the admin will love that where i know you have provided families important information regarding the growth of their children's speech needs i personally wish i had a
speech pathologist like you since my art issues rise up every once in a while miss wavela thank you and last and certainly not least uh chris stay school how can chris staceville be leaving us what will our third grade team do to organize their year and where will staff go to eat lunch chris you have been the glue at robert down since you joined our staff in 2007. we were so lucky to have you choose our district back in 2006 after starting your career in 1988 at stanislaus union as a third and fifth grade teacher site coordinator vice principal and district project coordinator in 1999 you moved to manteca unified as their assistant admin for compensatory education and became the lead administrator the very next year after that you returned to stanislaus union as a
curriculum director and third grade teacher you blessed us as the pg usd curriculum coordinator in 2006 and i remember meeting you then in that tiny little office at the old district building near the middle school it has been an honor to work with you the past four years and much like your third grade team i'm not sure who is going to remind me about how i need to be better organized one of the best gifts an educator can ever receive is knowing you made the difference in a student's life i know for a fact that you have made an impact on hundreds of colleagues and thousands of students and we will all miss you dearly thank you miss day school i gave you your gift when the bears beat the raiders last season but maybe
we can catch a shark's game in the future to be on equal ground love you chris next i'd like to introduce the assistant superintendent song chin ben dib thank you i just stand up and honor three retirees um first is tony malinsky tony worked in the district as a maintenance worker for 13 years he would help anyone that was in need he was experienced and knowledgeable craftsmen in the maintenance department you know i was a direct beneficiary of that i had a little slight piece of my desk when i first came he built that it matches exactly the desk that i have i didn't know anybody in the world can do that and rumor had is that his uh tony and his wife moved to texas and then he bought his wife a horse and
i'm sure tony is now glued to the tv watching our board meetings congratulations tony next is mark mahani mark worked in the district as a classified sub prior to working 10 years as a classified employee in the role of let's start this instructional assistant noon duty recreation is attended in the basrp program and the most time is the bus driver and utility worker as a driver mark make sure that students were picked up and delivered to their destination on time and safely uh well we hear that he has moved on to a real to a new career in real estate well i'm sure that's not the last we won't be surprised if we hear that next you'll be running for president mark's much loved by students parents and staff and we wish him the best
since its retirement obviously the last not the list denise has been in a district with 24 and a half years 15 years at the middle school and 10 years at the district office she is really the de facto go to person for anything and everything about pg usd she knows everybody and everybody knows denise she's smart resourceful and really tenacious and i really want to thanks uh the support that i have received from denise this past four years this has been invaluable i can't thank her enough for all the help she has provided seis and the department's support staff she'll be missed and i wish her really a wonderful well-deserved retirement and we have one more retiree to recognize and dr porus will do the honors good evening everybody it is my honor and my
privilege and my in my sadness as well to be honoring and recognizing sun chin bendib our assistant superintendent who will be retiring although in september uh so we have her a little bit longer but um as we try to do at this time of year to note the service of our colleagues and song has been with the district this will be your fourth year and time goes by fast and uh you know coming to the district i think the first thing that struck me as the superintendent i think also with our administrative team because i can remember our administrative retreat like it was yesterday song had come into the district new didn't really know a lot of folks but she sat down and as we all did immediately shared her story her personal story and
um it was overwhelming is the wrong word it was a blessing to hear about her life and about the rich cultural diversity that she brings to our district and to the administrative team and i think that perspective has shined through throughout the time that you've been here sung um i think um you you give that perspective a diversity as we're trying to become a better more culturally diverse district and world around us you always bring that perspective no matter what the topic is and um it's deeply appreciated especially a time when we're looking for those kinds of resources so i think number one above and beyond the job of a fiscal officer it was the job as an educator and job as a professional and as a person to come in and help us through
this i know that you'll be enjoying time with your husband ben and your house remodeling that'll be a challenge as you continue moving forward with that and spending some time i know just being able to be with him and to to enjoy life for a while away from the spreadsheets although i imagine that you'll be scooped up by consulting firms pretty quickly to be able to do some of that work and hopefully we'll have a chance to work with you again in different capacities and then last but not least just in regards to the work that she's done for the district for those who may not have noticed uh song brought a rich um uh treasure trove of organizational systems for us and helped to really enhance the work that we did in the in
the fiscal end of the house to really kind of take a look deep look at how we operate and try to manage the system the organizational system with a different lens which was great for us and and also took into account the history that we've had over the years and try to match a lot of the history that we have with some some new innovation as you came in you'll be deeply missing i appreciate all the conversations that we've had and cabinet the laughter that we shared with the group and i wish you only the very best i'm grateful that we'll have you here a little while longer but in the meantime uh song chimbendib assistant superintendent [Applause] thank you superintendent thank you board remember i'm not done yet i'll be here until september i'll
reserve my words until then thank you okay thank you and that's the end of acknowledging our our retirees i'd like to bring it back to the board well thank you uh we're standing for song but we're standing for everybody obviously um i personally think it's the best career that's out there being an educator and working with young people and shaping them and supporting them in every different kind of capacity we've just heard about it's um it's sad to see people leave the system but it's also balanced by people coming in new people with new ideas and joining our our different districts and education systems throughout the the the city the county the state and the country so a big thank you to everyone it's it's hard at the end when you say 50 years doing
something that some people are standing in with covered restrictions that we can't all be together just know how much the board thanks you from the bottom of our hearts for everything you've done for the district so one more time please all right when do we when's the the cake i don't want to be pushy about it but when does that happen um as we mentioned uh to all of the staff they're going to the different sites um so they'll be celebrating all of them celebrate at their different sites along with the signs and the plaques so that each of the sites have a chance to celebrate with the retirees there as well okay but what about song is here because she's had cake at every size she had cake already yes okay what about those
kids look really hungry all right so everybody's been fetted at different areas and we're very happy to hear that all right so we'll move on yes okay let's do it communications uh we'll talk about written communications um we got a more than a few letters about covid i actually did a tally to kind of balance and there were uh many people who were thanked us and for being proactive and taking care of kids and there were um some that didn't really like us too much and what we were trying to do please remember that we made these decisions a couple of months ago in in a way that we would be able to have things a threshold met so things would be in place if need be uh we got a letter regarding uh robotics
and the hiring of an assistant coach uh concerns about the promotion dance in the middle school indoors or outdoors for safety staff uh we got one apologizing for not being around tonight because they're doing something else letter on the wave program and uh resignations and we're going to have a student also that i've been communicating with about her uh unique high school attendance and that'll be coming up soon other things that i might have missed we received a letter from the league of women voters which i think is relevant regarding redistricting um also a note concerning a bond in baseball bleachers and some discussion therein an invitation to falconfest thank you very much um and other events actually and things and uh also request uh to discuss whether or not there could be a foundation
set up similar to the carmel high school foundation a 501c uh specific to scholarships in perpetuity so that's some additional items i have okay can you forward those on to us if we didn't see those okay trustee carolyn i know you're not in the room do you have anything else oh thank you president dawson i do have a couple i got a csba which stands for california school board association advocacy request i got an email about a career technical education student of the year meeting an email regarding a special day class teacher position at robert down an email about actually two emails about a skate park within the city limits of pacific grove and a media request from univision and um oh and a invitation to attend the walk of remembrance that happened this past
weekend in the city of pg and that's all okay thank you very much anything else to add anywhere uh no additional emails okay thank you all right um next uh we'll do board member comments please so trustee swanson brian do you have something to add tonight yeah i missed the last meeting i'm sorry about that but i did want to thank my fellow board members in the district for allowing me to participate in the policy workshop which was really interesting um it was a great exercise very eye-opening and one of the really great things about it too is you know we were all sitting here at the dais and working through different policies with a lot of different district employees and seeing them work together was really remarkable it was a little bit of a
different environment but it was really lovely to see how much everybody really liked each other and pulled together to work through what was a three-day workshop really and they set aside they had to set aside these other things that they're really important things that they have to do on a day-to-day basis to do this extra work but i really appreciated just seeing how everybody pulled together and did that so that's all okay well we thanked you profusely you couldn't hear us but it's a big deal could you feel it yes i felt okay good because uh you gave a lot of time and energy on behalf of the board and the district so thank you very very much trustee paff just a couple niceties i i enjoyed the show at the high school year in
town which was run in his satire from the early 2000s and still is interestingly uh pertinent and it's going on tonight so um i'm not there but eventually they have to break that set for the dance tomorrow night so we'll see if that works out the concert monday was very nice at the high school the awards at the high school last night was fantastic and i see some people here whose children receive those and congratulations to you all that was an especially um i really think that the counselors went out of their way and really made a fantastic show and larry thank you very much and dr porris thank you very much um and frankie uh christian and margaret and uh whoever else was involved in those decisions uh finally and i think more importantly
which which actually comes up at a later time that we actually have to open up a discussion i did sit on the continued housing meeting that's going on with pacific grove david driscoll out of b d somewhere in seattle under the new rnha which is regional new housing authority uh the city of pacific grove is in theory supposed to bring forth 1125 new houses in the next eight years um and uh how that happens is is interesting i mean i don't know how it happens actually i mean since in the last eight years we built a total of 150 building 150 a year seems a phenomenal and impossible change but i'll keep reporting on that as it comes forth and i think ultimately we we do need to decide if we are going to uh
try and and work into that in some manner as a district and how that might happen so thank you trustee dr rivera i just feel really excited as right now we're in the season of celebration as we head into the end of the year in fact this is our last meeting well we have a couple of more meetings don't get too yeah there's still business but before a school let's out we have a graduation next year um i was at the concert last thursday night and last friday night and wow those students are really talented um i was brought my family there they were they all enjoyed it um so thank you uh george george warren our new instructor his first year who's doing a great job that's just fabulous and i was just thank
you all for what you've said about the the retirees i mean it's such a noble profession to give yourself to the future is what you're doing and um just to hear all those beautiful stories of the retirees it's just it's so heartwarming so so thank you for sharing that thank you trustee carolyn swanson yeah thank you christy um uh i trust if you can't hear me you'll let me know so i'm just going to continue on so i've got a couple things to bring up first a friend of mine who's also in education mentioned that may is known as the hundred days of may because of the many many events that take place and i just thought what a perfect description um for all of our staff members at all of our sites i think
we're all feeling that them of course more than the board and i wanted to mention one thing that was brought up at the last meeting we were missing john path and missing brian swanson so i want to bring it back up we had a really nice invitation from um jennifer who is the executive director of the equine healing collaborative and she invited the board to come out and kind of witness what the equine healing collaborative does at their carmel ranch and i wanted to bring that back up because i would like to go um and i would like to kind of have that as a discussion and see if we can go as a board field trip that was my first thing and then i was lucky enough to attend the walk of remembrance this
weekend in the city of pacific grove there was probably 250 to 300 people there it was extremely moving the city council um city councilman chaps pradhuri read a apology uh resolution and um it was in my opinion it was exquisitely written because it really um tapped into and kind of told a story of the very rich chinese history that is here um that was here um on on the coast of the peninsula and so um i printed out that resolution for all of you and um and i gave it to alyssa earlier so that she could give it to you and i hope you do find time board members and song and ralph including the student rep if you could find time to read that um i i found it quite moving and um what
else i just want to say thank you to everyone who emailed us um i appreciate uh very much getting emails from our community and so i just want to thank every single person who sent in an email um and then lastly good old days took place and part of that was the centennial celebration the 100 year celebration of robert down school and mr keller i thought you did a wonderful job wrangling that um entire event including cake afterwards and then the maypole dance following it so thank you mr keller that's all okay thank you trustee swanson um i'm going to be real brief tonight which is kind of a challenge but i feel like i'm up to it i work as to represent the district with community human services and the ceo called me and
um we we work with them and um the senator laird in sacramento on june 8th is recognizing them as his non-profit of the year so i'll be traveling to sacramento then and because i'm vice president of that group and going to get that award so i thought that was kind of a nice thing so quickly i think i i need to defer after talking about how important these students are please share your last thoughts with us and how sad you'll be every thursday there's a meeting and you're not here and an introduction to the excitement for next year please so we just as we speak is the final performance of urinetown started at 6 30 our musical um we had prom this last weekend at pacidera it was really fun we had the breaker jazz
combo played live music for us at the beginning they were amazing um dr warren's jazz and orchestra also had performances last week that went really well last night was a senior awards ceremony in the student union and thousands of dollars in scholarships went to um went to students and we were the valedictorian salutatorians were announced um finals is next week wednesday thursday friday and then graduation is friday from five to seven at the breaker stadium and we had a leadership training yesterday so we're gonna have the new asb president ray avila talk about that hi everyone um i am ray avila i'll be the new asb president for the 2022-2023 school year so like gabby said we had a little training for future years leadership classes that our teacher miss selfridge uh introduced us to
uh basically we partnered with this company called involved schools uh where they uh teach uh thousands of different schools different ways to really encourage connectedness throughout students and different schools to really bring a sense of community back to you know schools like ours that seem to have lost a little bit of that due to this uh pandemic so it was a really valuable training that we went through we did lots of different activities and exercises that really taught us how to uh really just bring the school together and encourage everyone to have school spirit and bring back the sense of community well we're really excited you're going to join us next year ray so and gabriella good luck as you move forward okay thank you all right next we're going to move to the superintendent
report please thank you madam president just a couple items tonight deference of the agenda first i just want to thank the high school staff and all of the work that went into putting together the scholarship night and probably more specifically to all the donors who provided a tremendous amount of resource for our awardees and it was a beautiful event last night really great to watch all of that happen and so kudos to high school and please extend my regards to all the staff for the hard work that they did i appreciate it the other thing i want to make a quick mention of we the grand jury report had come out has come out from the grand jury that was assembled regarding the county's response to covid in terms of the educational programs both for
the monterey county office of education and for the school districts as a whole and the entire grand jury process was a long one this year it was a very tumultuous year obviously and i'm very pleased to say that the grand jury gave lauded all of the county office in all the school districts in regards to their response to covid in particular gave a lot of kudos to the school sites for the district the districts teachers classified staff emotional support personnel and all of the educators at every level that went way uh quote beyond their job descriptions to provide support and services to students and their families schools were used as food distribution centers coven 19 testing vaccination sites emotional support centers behavioral health support centers created a new professional development for teachers how to deal
with distance learning across two years and provided in some cases clothing and housing for students resource centers for students and health care and mental health services for students and it goes on and on to describe the work that school districts do and it's not a surprise certainly in terms of watching what it happened here in pacific grove and the response that the staff gave and rose to the challenge was pretty remarkable we have to respond to this grand jury response and basically just agree or not agree with their assessment i think it's pretty easy to agree um so we're going to be working with that i'll be working with the superintendent of the county to do a brief response to that that's all that's required from that and then we'll be able to publish the
final report out for the public to see and last but not least i just want to um this says truster rivera commented this is the last board meeting before the end of the school year and as i always want to thank all of the staff again as i've said before regardless of their job description every member of this district rose to the challenge this year felt in a way more difficult than last year there was just a lot of um it was hard to get the rhythm back it was hard to try to kind of figure out how do you shuffle and jockey between the transition from distance learning back into uh in person the social emotional toll that was taken the year before played out pretty heavily this year and all of the staff
i just did a tremendous job of trying to identify the needs for our students and our families and and rise to that challenge and that need and i think the other thing that played out pretty obviously was an organizational shutter it was hard to figure out where we could provide the services we needed to because for the most part like all other school district our organization was set up to serve students and families in a different way we were presented with a new challenge and a new way to try to figure out how to provide those services and it was hard i think for everybody it was difficult it was a rethink and i think halfway through the year perhaps into the spring uh we're starting to figure out what we can do um trying
to find a mental health therapist the high school for example was a new and different way to approach some of the needs i think we're going to continue to doing that work as we reorganize ourselves and so um i want to thank the staff for enduring that as a whole district as all districts did as they were talking a superintendent and reflecting on it everyone felt like it was just a hard year it's hard to put your finger on why but as you start to reflect on it you can understand why and um it has everything to do with all the staff in the district and all the families and all the students who put their best foot forward and i just want to apply everyone i appreciate everyone for a really amazing year and
look forward to graduation coming up next week uh principal got to see us uh on his way back next week and uh so we'll get to finish off the school year there at the high school and for all of our school sites so that's all i have for tonight thank you so much okay now we'll move on to pg usd staff comments on non-agenda items hi good evening sean keller principal at robert down i just would like to invite the board and the community next week we will be the starting point for the graduation walk that will begin at 9am so the pacific grove high school grads will come through robert down first and then they'll head on up the hill and go to all the different school sites and then we will have our
fifth grade promotion at 11 o'clock between 11 and 12. so please come and hope to see you there thank you hello larry hadquest tosa pacific grove high school i have a couple things to say first of all a real quick story i went to one of my daughters soccer games earlier this year when their team was devastated by kovit and they had to play with several people missing and they lost and she came home and she was devastated like we were having such a good season and what you know it's not fair that we just don't have enough people out there and let me just say that i can empathize with that i think we can all empathize with that there's no way that we can be at our best when we are missing people
right important people experts we can bring in substitutes but when when our start when our talent is gone we're not going to be at our best so i think that speaks a little bit to what dr porris was just addressing and so first thing i want to do is i want to say thank you to the district office staff board members uh at the high school we had people stepping into classrooms from every level of the organization and we've had that happen over and over again and uh quite honestly without that support from above we would not have survived the way we did i got a phone call well i got a communication a few weeks ago from our principal leto garcia saying he was going to be stepping away to recover from his neck
injury and shane and i thought whoa we've got a something to deal with here and then two weeks ago sunday i got a text from shane saying i just tested twice for covid you're you're in charge uh so um i immediately thought of a scene from the titanic when the violin player the ship was going down the violin players were there i'm thinking okay i'm a violin player but actually i'm not because we have such great support the ship is not going down the ship is cruising to graduation we're excited about that we've got a lot of things that have been going on a lot of positives to be focusing on i mean just think of all the things that have been happening at the school in the last couple of weeks the music concert
the awards ceremony the prom all of those things have been going great and we're celebrating our seniors really looking forward to uh the graduation so um thank you all and that's all i have to say thank you very much good evening members of the board buck rogerman principal of forest grove um just wanted to say uh falcon fest is on and uh we are so proud and so happy that we're going to be able to bring this great tradition back to uh forest forest grove after having a couple of years off so if you're not doing anything tomorrow afternoon um you have to come because it's one of the most heartwarming things that you'll see and a great way for us to end the school year if you haven't been before the top field is
uh full of great outdoor activities for the kids there's an obstacle course um and multiple other activities i wish i could say which ones but uh are the pta who plans it doesn't really let me know it so it's just as much of a surprise for me as it is for the rest of the children um the second level is almost kind of like a booth's setup with a lot of fun activities for the students to do gonna have kona ice and a photo booth so uh it's just going to be a great afternoon so you're more than welcome to come and join us just want to take a moment also too to thank the forest grove staff for keeping everything held together throughout the entire year that even as more staff members are starting
to you know um can attract covert with this latest surge that we've had you know some of our intervention teachers and um specialists on campus step in and take those substitute jobs when they had not planned on doing that at the start of the school day so um incredible team effort and so very very proud to be the principal of force growth and we're going to celebrate a great year on the field tomorrow join us thank you thank you mr rogerman good evening sean roach proud principal of pacific grove middle school and for those district office staff who happen to look out their windows today my students duct taped me to a wall straight over there whoa and they delighted in doing it which was actually wonderful it was a um we were raising money
for a little scary um we're raising money for um next year's spirit days and all the stuff that leadership does so i had today i had the pleasure of today mr tavani had the pleasure of yesterday and so that was that was quite a bit of fun also i was not the acting principal at pacific grove middle school today it was principal balaban one of our sixth grade students so we every year our children's children raise money for an orphanage in um in africa and one of the things that they tried to do is have students compete against one another to raise the most money that they possibly could and so this classroom raised the most money and this young man um is leaving us this year unfortunately he's moving away and so they decided
to anoint him the principle i can't say he did rule with an iron fist and there were absolutely no disciplinary issues the entire day so that was a lot of fun also too i'd like to love the high school for hosting the um the middle school promotion ceremony on next thursday on the 26th that ceremony will begin at five o'clock and end roughly around six o'clock also um we surveyed our students and um they overwhelmingly said that they would like to have the promotion dance held outdoors so we'll be doing that in the area adjacent to the garden area i think everybody's happy about that masks indoors in the gym with 350 kids not a pleasant time it's absolutely uh it's better outside so um and and i'd also like to give a quick shout
out to our ptsa it is it has been a a challenging year um yet they remain intrepid in doing their things and their president um apple autofoul has done a wonderful job this year so if you're out there apple well done thank you very much thank you mr roach for sharing any other comments online nothing okay individuals desiring to address the board public comment on any item of interest to the public that is within the board's jurisdiction will be heard the board will also take public comment on each specific action item prior to the board action on each item the board will allow a reasonable amount of time for public comment on each agenda item not to exceed three minutes per speaker and no more than 20 minutes per agenda item pursuant to board policy

junior at superior high school thank you all for your time that was very very impressive [Applause] i think uh public speaking is part of their life too that was uh very well done very articulate thank you and we look forward to what goes on with this group in the future thank you uh we read earlier today that usually public comment is limited to three minutes but we have a very important guest right now and actually we're going to be talking about alternative uh ways of attending high school and moving towards diplomas on june 2nd and i'm absolutely delighted that carly could come tonight and talk so we're going to wave that so you don't feel light's blinking and you're in trouble and you got to talk really really fast okay carly great to see you
you too thank you good evening everyone my name is carly kelly i'm currently a senior at pacific grove high school and i'm here to share the opportunities benefits and my personal experience with dual enrollment first and foremost i want to thank ms dawson for the opportunity to address the board in the community i greatly appreciate her dedication to students by allowing our voices to be heard i too want to thank mr path for meeting with me and supporting my dual enrollment educational path at the beginning of this journey i am the first ever student from pacific grove high school to graduate with a high school diploma and a getsy certificate csu certificate and a double a in social and natural sciences [Applause] thank you um numerous students and administrators have asked me what exactly is
isn't a getsy and how does dual enrollment work in a getsy is the intersegmental general education transfer curriculum which is a series of courses that california community college students complete to satisfy freshman and sophomore level general education requirements before transferring to a uc or csu with junior status allowing one to immediately enter into their major dual enrollment is the action of taking college courses while simultaneously enrolled in high school according to mpc monterey peninsula college offers a stellar opportunity for students to increase college and career readiness while in high school by adding college courses to their middle or high school students students receive an early college experience designed to better illustrate what is expected in college and career to highlight the benefits of dual enrollment free all high school students can take courses at mpc
free of charge free college general education credits equals a big savings of time and money double counting credits towards high school graduation requirements and building a college transcript pursuing special interest in an advanced way not having post-grad credits count against you for college financial aid bridge between high school and junior college and four-year universities high school gpa bump further preparedness for college no end-of-the-year tests that has to be passed in order to earn the credits semester-long courses or excelled six-week courses allows high school students a head start on their undergrad coursework how do we make this work at pacific grove high school first we need a growth mindset we need to encourage students and teachers to embrace challenges stay resilient in the face of difficulties learn from constructive criticism and seek out inspiration and other
successes highly qualified pghs teachers on campus are supported in receiving their certification through mpc to teach college courses on campus this will allow pghs to offer mpc courses on campus with our teachers supporting teachers that want to be certified and continuing this by hiring teachers who support this path allowing pghs students to flex schedule so they can take courses on mpc campus in mornings before arriving in campus this avoids the on and off campus concerns pghs students can take mpc courses online in support of students the district can dedicate a classroom or space for pghs students to take these courses as a cohort currently every single high school in monterey county offers an academic dual enrollment class on campus through mpc or hartnell we are the only high school in the county that does not
offer an academic general education dual enrollment course on site my experience when asked to reflect on my journey as a dual enrollment student i would say it's character building academically challenging frustrating yet exceptionally self-rewarding i feel exceedingly prepared for college and am excited to be attending a college that completely recognizes and rewards the hard work i have put into my academics i will be going into my college of choice with junior standing which is both financially and academically beneficial for me furthermore it is humbling and encouraging to have dual enrollment as an opportunity for current and future pghs students this opportunity should not be a battle for students students should be supported and encouraged on this path i ask that administration board members work together to support teachers and students who are willing to embrace
this innovative and exciting way of educating and challenging our students i did not spend all four years of high school fighting for dual enrollment as a pghs student for to disappear as i leave my goal is for students who are like-minded and want to push themselves in different academic avenues facing the challenges and understanding college coursework and taking courses that will deepen their knowledge in a specific area to be able to do so the breadth goes far beyond this consider our pghs and community high students that want to dive deeper into specific area of interest political science math welding theater whatever passion they may want to explore i am grateful my dream became a reality i've already been approached by two upcoming freshmen on my journey this is this is not the path for everyone
just as ap cte or general education aren't for everyone however it should be supported encouraged and admired just as ap is i'm so grateful our district hired mr garcia he has been immensely supportive of my journey and will continue to support future students wishing to take dual enrollment courses i am positive that with the help of our forward-thinking counselors growth mindset teachers and the support of mr garcia our school can begin to offer academic dual enrollment classes on campus and also aid students who wish to take them off campus as i had the opportunity to do thank you for your time and consideration moving forward thank you so much even though we're not supposed to talk we have to talk now of course i just uh i wanted to mention you know i'm talking to
a couple people last night and pretty much the the way that you started and pushed forward there are people already behind you already taking this and congratulations on opening that path which you know hopefully we can in fact continue to develop more appropriately but well done congratulations and you're going in as a junior to uc davis i wrote down ucd here but i wasn't quite sure congratulations and uh really congratulations on entering in with so much behind you it's fantastic absolutely thank you for adjusting your schedule so you could come share it i think it's um very important i know in my last district there was a program called middle college which is exactly what you're talking about and uh it worked so well but but i have to say that uh you being so
humble part of the reason it was so successful for you is because of who you are and you have this little built-in uh rooting section who stand behind you and i'm sure they're very sad not to have to pay for those first two years but just know grad school is in her future so this will go on for a long time carly thank you for adjusting i hope you have a wonderful vacation while we're you're doing those last couple of meetings but quite informative and i couldn't agree with you more that it should not just disappear as you right into the sunset i'm from dixon california which is about seven minutes from davis so maybe we can grab some coffee or something because you're special we're going to see you friday i'll i'll slip you
my number and we can go look at some fields and sheep because that's all you do up there but davis is about the same with bikes okay thank you so much for being here any thank you thank you thank you his mask is muting him but we're all feeling it all right uh any other yes please this is luciano please share uh good evening members of the board and community christina luciano uh first grade teacher at forest grove and a parent of a second grader at forest grove i just wanted to extend my appreciation and thanks tonight for the safety measure that you put in place with the threshold leading us back to masking it is um really helping to make us feel safe and finish out the year strong with healthy kiddos because as
i told my first graders i want to see every one of their faces on the last day of school and i would hate to have an illness keep them home so thank you so much for putting that threshold in place so that we can finish the year strong thank you for sharing any others i'm looking to you nothing happening all right well thank you so much now we're going to move on have fun at ucd go aggies all righty um we'll go to consent agenda please and um any changes to that at this time anything going on board [Applause] i wanted to make a comment i don't need to pull it but i wanted to comment to the high school uh mr steinbeck with the premier studios and the jostens i just wanted to say
as a former athletic and not athletic what am i activities director that's it i tried to be athletic but no i had to cheer that's where i went um there is an ability to ask for things and i just wanted to say do i kind of didn't know till i went to cad of the california activities director's conference and people were saying oh you need to ask for things i mean we spend a lot of money on jostens on diplomas years book etc so when i finally got that little tip i started getting some nice things for the high school so i just i i saw it here and i thought uh parting words just go get what you can okay it doesn't hurt to ask right it does not and they they don't deny
once you ask but they sure don't bring it up before you ask okay i have been asking for those uh free student handbooks for years and years and years and working on that right now yeah i got an electric sign i mean i got some stuff so yeah stay on it stay on it and sometimes if they don't give it all to you they give you a big chunk all right anything else any other little tidbits all right i have a few things to pull from consent yes please miss caroline i'd like to pull f lease agreement with monterey bay swim club um three total items to pull my second item is t contract for services with pacific west water um and my third one is a double letter it's um double n contract for
services with silky communications i got that i think okay so to pull them we can discuss them we don't have to and you wanted a couple of things i know uh added to the double in and the uh question regarding the swimming can we just discuss that prior to going to it nope we can't and only if it's just a simple question i think they're they might be rather simple correct trustee caroline i don't know i email i emailed them in advance to you and ralph so ralph what do you say as the secretary of the board well i did uh send our response to the full board in regards to your questions so i suspect it's up to you in regards to if you feel that it needs to be discussed further i would
suggest you pull them yeah i'll pull them then okay we'll pull them and then slide them in at the top of the wherever you'd like to have put them in action okay sounds good so uh board comments on this anything else yeah i'm missing a page two h was pulled this at the beginning of the day h is going to go right to the top that was stated up front yeah i'm missing a page i don't know how anyway anything right now okay so uh with the exclusion of the items that were already listed do we uh are there any public comments on this by the way okay so with the exclusion of those do i hear a motion motion to approve second okay the motion we will now vote on please hi okay the
motion carries so that is done and then we will move forward please and we will uh i'm sorry i didn't say you can't see anybody's lips moving it's a very challenging thing i'm sorry i normally say it i'll try to be on that okay uh we'll now go to pub public um well let's go let's do these consent items first and then go to the public hearing if that's okay so the first thing will be um consider item h and i apologize but i'm missing a page so i'll slide over here okay this is a walk-on h so the item that we're looking at is an independent consultant agreement so board are there any questions at this time i think ralph didn't we start with you mentioning that that was going to get pulled forward
uh yes it was uh it was noted by trustees uh carolyn uh that there was a contract that seemed to be there was something missing in the packet and so staff went back and uh reviewed it and redid the uh pack redid that item so uh assistant superintendent jim bendib could present that for you if you like please thank you madam president um so this packet is um mr sunderlager he's a consultant for e-rate and he's very valuable in terms of how he delivered the services and over the years especially last year we got hundreds of thousands of dollars in rebates to pay for chromebooks what happens is that this is a contract that is format that we have been using with him it's a little bit more into his resume his background so what
we're adding tonight is our regular the new consultant agreement and he has agreed to the terms around five six five pm or so so that's why we bring it here just putting in terms and conditions like his fees at the scope of work and um and also the tasks that he would be doing so we already have those items or listed in the packet page started page uh pages 46 through 47 but we put it into our format which uh the agreement that which board has and will be posted on the website as well and i'll just open up for any questions okay questions trustee path well to just make sure i'm absolutely clear what we did here was pull it because we wanted to add the actual formal verbiage of the contract that's correct
okay and we have used this gentleman in the past and our experience is that he saves us more than we pay by absolutely tenfold and then so that's correct very good thank you okay i have no questions um dr rivera no trustee carolyn any questions no questions just thank you song for um for making a little bit more formal and adding this contract to it i appreciate it thank you um trustee karen swanson for bringing this to our attention okay thank you any public comment at this time okay seeing none uh do i have a motion please motion to approve second second a motion was made by dr frank rivera and seconded by trustee path roll call vote please aye hi okay the motion carries five zero um okay now we'll go to if we
made quickly the items that carolyn had pulled uh carolyn i'm missing a page i don't know how this happened could you talk about the first one please okay sure uh first item pulled is consent item f f is in frank uh lease agreement with monterey bay swim club my questions are related to um the within the contract it said that robert down gets 15 hours of swim time and forest grove gets seven and i'm always looking at things with an equity lens especially for our elementaries making sure that things are um equitable so i wanted to find out why it's seven there may be a very good reason but um just from the information given i wasn't able to determine why okay mr rogerman could you please help us with this this item's a page
on page 25 of the packet as well okay thank you sure um when uh we first started the swim swim lessons um it kind of uh came to us as an offer for uh fort forest grove to get some swim swim lessons after the robert down program had uh started robert downs program is in the fall and the fall is a time where at that time the pool was not in as heavy use by the by the high school and so they could extend those lessons over a broader number of weeks and so the time of the year that was available for us was the month of june january and so uh when we looked at what would work best for our school um we didn't want to do it that very first week that
we got back from uh winter break went a chance to get the kids settled into a schedule and so what we did was that um the second and third week of january and uh did two two weeks we did three uh swim lessons the first week because it fell the week after martin martin luther keying day and then we did four lessons the following week and then when february rolls around that is the beginning of the spring swim and swim season and so the pool was in use uh at that point in february as well as a monterey bay swim club i think also that their season started to ramp up at that time too so uh the overall instruction for our classes is limited to seven hours because of where it falls in the
calendar year in terms of the lessons that we get i think if there were a way for forest grove to get 15 hours of swim swim lessons i think our teachers would probably embrace that um having just had a quick conversation with them however i don't know how that would work in terms of the time of year that we would do the swim lessons what makes it difficult is we try to align the swim lessons with um the time of day where pe lands and so if pe for the fifth grade well we wind up switching the pe schedule so fifth grade can go in the afternoon rather than take up the morning instructional time for an hour and try to squeeze the swim lessons in there i hope that wasn't too much um okay
uh questions regarding this well trustee trustee swanson's correct i mean uh honestly i appreciate the explanation but somehow um you know fix it right i mean the short of it is that that makes no sense from an equity or frankly what we're trying to do with the students the students we want to have swim because guess what we live by an ocean and you know really everybody here and this is part of the goal and with with mark years ago when we had this discussion was to try and bring everybody on board so how do we fix it and you know you could go to alternating years and swap out seasons and make that happen um i'm not sure that's actually a great solution but somehow uh i i i'm in agreement this uh it's
a little problematic no further comment just to carolyn comments yeah so um you know i would like to see it be at least comparable um i don't know if the solution tonight and i'll just i'll just toss out a couple options um i could see i mean it seems like you know once a contract is here in the packet some pre-work has been done to generate that contract so if we can't do it this year maybe we say okay that's 22 hours total let's do 11 at force grove and 11 at robert down with the direction to staff for next year to make them both 15 and figure out the scheduling that's one option another option would be to just kick it back to staff and say um you know they'll have to of course
chat with the monterey bay swim club and see if we can do 15 and 15. there's some sort of trade that happens as well for them to use our pool in exchange for these um lessons and so i think you know that they would need to be included in the discussion okay thank you i i have to agree i mean it just seems like you were a little late to the party and get the short stick here on this so it would be nice to try to find something equitable my immediate thing is to think of changing it out over different years but i think ultimately then somebody else gets the short stick while you get that uh so timing and uh i think uh i hope the board i mean we'll check and see
what everybody thinks but there needs to be a way to make it equitable and find a way to uh to make it work and probably sitting down for a little bit and just with the calendar and trying to and it might be nice to do it the way trustee carolyn just mentioned where one year it's this and then it can move up a little bit more you know there's so many different ways to do it and i think that's we should defer to you on to take a look at that you and mr keller okay so board would we be in agreement that that's a good thing to aim towards i think in the short term sure i think the the one solution that we haven't talked about is still it's like if we just
reconfigure what we're doing with the two elementary schools that would solve the problem oh that's true that's on our agenda for future items it would be all nice and clean all right that would take care of that's one more equity issue yeah okay okay we'll look for the long-term goal that's our job and uh if you can look towards that short term that'll be good i can also reach out to mark and take a look at the schedule for next year yeah and see if we can make it happen tell them the board is a little puzzled and wants to find a better solution and i think that he'd be on board with doing that that said the board is very appreciative of mark's efforts to ensure that everybody in goes through our school system
swim i mean i really am it's it's been tremendous and it's been going on for 10 years is that right i think we've been doing this since before i was on the board so i don't know it's a long time now started appreciate it but like two years 22 hours before we did it for two years perfect thank you so much for explaining that mr rogerman public comment please seeing none thank you so much yeah i make a motion we accept the lease agreement with monterey bay swim club with a change to say that pacific grove elementary schools shall allocate 22 hours of swim instruction between them without any further i think you've said perhaps too much yeah i mean are we right now we have a contract that says very specifically 900 minutes at
robert town and 420 minutes and what i'm suggesting is we simply say you will provide 22 hours total and if they divide up differently over the fall and winter we don't have to further intercede it's already available to them okay second second all right motion was made by trustee paff seconded by dr rivera roll call bolt yes aye hi hi and do we need to specify if we want to see this come back or staff will just bring it back next year hopefully with more hours or whatever that needs to happen the latter okay sounds good they're gonna get it solved all right the next item please carolyn okay sure next item is item t contract for services with pacific west water purification i don't need any answers um any questions answered i should say
but on this one i'm just going to recuse myself so if we want to vote for that now feel free and then i'll just abstain from the vote that sounds good any uh other board comments any public comments do we have a motion go ahead motion to approve second motion was made by dr frank rivera seconded by christy dawson roll call vote please yes hi she's recused so we have the four in favor so it carries all right the last one the last one is on um page 226 it's item nn contracts for services with silky communications all right this one i just wanted to clarify in the contract it specifically calls out certain um sites but it doesn't call out the special ed preschool or the state preschool and i understand that that might
have been kind of included in the community high school site because um but to me to me i would like for that to be called out differently i think a lot of times the special ed preschool and the um the state preschool are kind of out of mind and i would really like for those to be listed clearly on this contract all right i i thought earlier today dr porus we read a communication from you that those two sites do indeed have uh their own uh radio communication available is that accurate that is correct madam president i checked with the safety director martinez and she said yes they do have radios and yes they are covered in a maintenance contract with silky uh so the board may choose to reword the contract however you'd like
but they are already included i would i would like to add it just for clarity sake on on the contract being 100 clear that may make sense because each site is specific and david avenue has many programs on it trustee swanson so maybe we can include the david avenue site to include community high school special ed preschool and state preschool as noted that that makes sense to me thank you okay so so to be clear we're adding on barbara on page 227 of our booklet here do you have a copy in front probably no but i do know the board cover which i wrote so to include all sites including the david avenue site not to not to be limited to just community high school but to include special ed preschool and state preschool inclusive
so uh any public comment at this time if i may have president i want to make sure principal martinez in the contract it refers to the base stations for each of those sites i do want to be clear that the special ed preschool does not have a base station the community high school office is the one with the base station is that correct yes affirmative the community high school has a base station and each one of the classrooms and programs within the site has a radio that communicates so this this contract is for both the mobile radios and the base stations that is correct it's just for service it's not for additional this is for service contract it makes it expedite services from the sites so that we can expedite um service like batteries and
and keep an open contract not to exceed that amount um so that we can repair and make sure that we have open communication amongst all sites to the base station i understood just wanted to make sure that was clear for the board thank you appreciate it okay and no public comment virtually all right so i would move let me see if i can get this right the contract for services with silky communications adds the additional verbiage that at david avenue special ed and the state preschool would be in parentheses that they also are within the contract do i hear a second a second okay uh motion was made by trustee dawson seconded by carolyn swanson roll call vote yes okay the vote carries five zero all right uh i think now we're ready for a
public hearing is that correct okay we will have an open and closed public hearing and then take action so i am opening the public hearing for the approval for tentative agreement with california school employees association thank you president please thank you nelson okay so this is a tentative agreement with the california school employees association csea is everything is actually stated in cover page and ab12 has documents attached and has been approved by the county office of education the monterey county office of education uh again we appreciate the expedited service with us you know working with us get us in on time and um it's our schedules that we've been you know prepared ready once the buddha proves and then we'll process the retro payments on june 10th um and we want to thank the team
um les tomoro is a president of csa and um our team billy menke hr director and also eric savado from the adult school from assay so it was uh i think it was a great few sessions really a lot camaraderie we work together and to get us done all right board comments please dr rivera i just think that uh thank you to everyone involved with the work thank you director and director trustee swanson brian no comment at this time trustee paff uh you gonna miss these yeah i have no comment thank you absolutely trustee carolyn swanson no comment and i want to echo i think this finally puts it to bed for the year so thank you so much song team everyone all employees we're just so happy to find that taken care of um
we close public clock comment now is there a public comment sure if is there any public comment if not you can close the earth yeah because there was there is huh here we go good evening i'm leslie tranulo i am the president of csa the classified employees union um just wanted to echo everyone's comments and say on behalf of all of our classified employees want to extend my thanks and gratitude to our employee negotiations team uh we're small this year but but mighty and to the district team it's always a pleasure to work with with the district and we'll miss you next year for that song and thank you to the board for your support thank you thank you very much for sharing tonight any other comments okay we will now close public hearing all
right i'll now open the vote now you guys now you can present it as an action item if uh okay so now we're going to go as an action item here we go uh public hearing and approval for tentative agreement with california school employees association any comments at this time trustee swanson um i just said procedurally do we need to give the time of the closing of the public hearing if we do it was at 8 13. i don't know what that means geez we've got it in here okay great then i've got no comments thank you okay thank you so much any public comment out there okay seeing none do i have a motion motion to approve second the motion was made by dr frank rivera seconded by trustee path roll call vote please
yes aye hi okay thank you so much now we'll move on to action uh discussion with the district update on the response to covet thank you madam president um we um if you did not notice today to send the message out to the board and did reflect on the monterey county health department website we are still above the threshold that was set by the board in regards to uh district masking indoors we're currently sitting at 5.2 percent which is in the moderate range for positivity and the seven-day average case rate is currently sitting at 14.4 in the moderate range in speaking with the health department this morning they are seeing an upward trend county wide and are seeing an upward tense statewide they anticipate these numbers to continue climbing a bit again that is simply
their reflection not their any data behind that other than what they've seen in trends so we will at this point by board order remain in indoor masking until one of those two drop into the low threshold i think it's also important to note that we've had quite a increase in cases that are noted on the district dashboard at one point i think we uh maxed out at 48 cases currently active right now we're down to i believe 40 cases currently active so we've had a bit of a spike in our current cases with students and staff it was certainly noticeable i'll just say anecdotally that a number of our administrators also suffered from acquiring kovid and so it certainly is having an impact in operations but we are able to continue forward that said obviously
we're looking to try to maintain the highest degree of safety we can for our students and our staff especially during the school year as we're coming down to the close and there are a lot of activities that students may participate in and we're hoping that none of them will catch any of the coveted symptoms so that they can participate fully the pool testing results may 16 through the 19th we will get this out on the break tomorrow robert down all negative pool test results the middle school all negative pool testing results forest grove the testing results will happen on friday pacific grove high school the testing results and nchs will happen on friday concentric the pool testing company has received a contract renewal from the state of california to continue their pool testing for the
district in the fall of 2022 which is great news pool testing will be suspended during the extended school year that's a summer school year but we'll resume in august of 2022 hopefully starting within the week of august the 15th those are constraints by the pool testing company not by us more information will follow we do have some home test kits available many of them still the california department of public health has approved additional take-home test kits for our school district which will become available in fall so we will have a nice fresh batch to work with our current take-home test kit supply is still plentiful and we are grateful for the california department of public health and the county office for these additional kits which have been helping us quite a bit during the surge
we've had a number of parents that have thanked us for being able to pick up the kits and and do the testing that's required and we do have a number of the kits that were handed out to students prior to several events so that they could participate in events knowing that they tested negative um the um guidelines for the school setting quarantine if the school uh tests any student tests uh coven 19 positive uh we continue to follow the same guidelines that are noted on the website we'll post them on the weekly break as well but all of the same guidelines still exist now those have changed if there is a change we will know that from the california department of public health and our monterey county health department in regards to the vaccine boosters
uh for ages five through eleven we don't have those booster the booster clinic set yet um we've uh been in conversation with the monterey city fire department um and they are looking to help um set a clinic as soon as possible hopefully prior to august but at least by august the community testing sites will be submitted weekly via the break so if there's any testing sites that are available we'll continue to post those and announce them as we can we certainly encourage the families to utilize the community testing sites during the summer the same links that we provide for you are links that you can use throughout the summer most of those don't renew so parents can simply just save that page and continue to click those links and then the because the district office
is a testing center you know for the community as well and this is the designated site in the room that we're currently sitting in uh covid 19 testing will continue every monday eight to four except for the staff lunch in the middle of the day throughout the months of june and july except for any federal holidays testing's already been rescheduled for tuesday may the 31st observance of memorial day which happens on may 30th outside of that one again just want to thank all the sites for the work that they're doing helping us maintain the safest environment possible for our students and that's a lab thank you so much for sharing tonight uh board comments please let's start with you dr rivera a lot of useful information in that report thank you so much dr boris
okay trustee pav well uh this is listed as action discussion right it is yeah so um yeah thank you for the information and let me just make sure i understand through uh through may june july we will have testing here on mondays unless there's a holiday there on right is that what i heard and then are we set for august if this continues is that already ready to rock and roll uh we will renew the contract with them in august usually we'll have that discussion probably next month they don't need the only renew a couple months in advance and we have kits in case we need to and we will be able to distribute them before i mean yes from this is forward-looking right in end of july so that people can test before they
come back and correct august as it comes out we already and we already have those kits is that what i heard we have uh yes we do yeah okay and we still have let's see if we had a hundred thousand masks two months ago we have nine hundred and or ninety nine thousand forty still around would we have plenty of mass for next year if it comes to it yes okay i just you know thank you to everybody who took this on and accepted and to this board frankly and to robin pelk in particular who said hey we set something having a threshold in place and just saying look we've hit it we've already decided um it just made this easy the emotional outbursts one way or another um really i you know we're gonna
have to revisit this yes we're gonna have to revisit i mean one thing that doesn't make any sense is to say well on tuesday you have to wear a mask but on friday you don't you know probably you have to put a threshold on that a minimum of a week just because uh or something else but um the fact is um [Music] we will have to revisit this for beginning of next year yes you know and and look at it again um but i i really appreciate how staff and teachers and students you know walking around even yesterday all those students had masks in that place and how readily they accepted what is clearly there so that especially those seniors get to graduation so thank you all very much and that's a little rambling i
apologize a lot information thank you so much trustee carolyn thank you christy um ralph can you just talk a little bit about um i know we have our upcoming promotions and graduations do we have are we needing to adapt those at all or those kind of as they are um can you describe what they are i believe they're outdoors et cetera et cetera just so that we can all be on the same page yes most of the activities are outdoor activities for example the promotion for the middle school and then the high school graduation happened at the stadium because it's outdoor there are no masking requirements and the county has not placed any additional requirements in regards to mega crowds we don't fall within that anyway just be based on our numbers however there are
no restrictions at this point for that so we have none in place i don't think they're necessary at this stage of the game um as principal roach mentioned this the dance for the middle school is going to be happening outdoors again not to fall won't fall into the masking requirements most of the events are all happening outside anything that's happening inside we continue to wear masks and do whatever mitigation strategy we can but there are very few that are i think in a situation where it's going to be compromised i think the event that we had last night the awards ceremony was indoors at the student union we had the fan going we had both back doors open everyone everybody in the audience was completely masked everyone participated um the only time that we didn't
was when we had a speaker present they took the mask off to speak and then took it to put it back on which would follow the same county guidelines that we've had in the past so i don't see at this stage of the game any of the activities that we have currently slated are going to be adversely affected by the indoor mask mandate i don't know that's what you're asking but that's that's what i think i heard yeah it was perfectly what i was asking actually thank you um regarding our high school graduation at the stadium it sounds to me like um that's gonna look like it did pre-covered with um handshakes happening on the stage and all that um and and no no no no no i uh we are not gonna have handshakes
we're going to we have ordered gloves for all of the trustees uh there will be um diplomas distributed but as we did uh during the covet time there just won't be a handshake but we'll all be up there at the stage we'll continue to participate as we had i just felt it was safer not to do that many handshakes across the board so um the gloves are simply just as a way to show a little bit more safety in regards to handling at the diploma but that's about it okay great and then my last question which is not about events i've asked you all my event questions um just for our um families who have kids who have um special needs or medical concerns as far as them masking on campuses what what is the
um procedure for that is there an exemption for those folks yes we're following the uh the same guidelines that we followed during covet if there's a medical exemption we receive a doctor's note um and uh we follow the orders that are written on the doctor's note okay thank you that's all i have okay everything's been discussed thoroughly thank you so much dr porus now we'll open up please for public comment um yeah i did i'm sorry did i skip you yeah that's okay no it's not i'm so sorry um no i'm just glad that we did what we did i think uh trusty path makes a good point though too that when we come back in the fall to give it a little tweak because the mask on mask off mask on thing could be
a little tedious and but we can take care of that as we get closer to the fall again but you know the way it was put into place i'm glad because initially i was my thoughts were we'll do it in a special meeting and if we had gone that way that would have been far clunkier i appreciate the way that it ended up happening so i think it was a good choice and i'm glad about that okay and the next data comes out monday is that correct so we'd hear and if uh things are where they should be then you let us know for tuesday is that the way it lays out absolutely we'll get a letter out um in collaboration with nurse paoli we'll get a letter out to all families via every channel
that we can to let them know what the situation is okay thank you so much all right now public comment wow i guess we just the letters expressed their deep most inner thinkings about us so thank you and what a lucky break for us okay um do we have a motion on this no change keep it up and we'll wait to hear on monday all right next we'll move to the approval of pacific grove unified school district's adult education teachers agreement thank you president dawson um on page 261 um with this is a meet and confer agreement it's not uh official uh uh collective uh agreement uh bargaining group um but i would like to thank jan hall representing adult school teachers and um with um miss banky and i we met with her and
they came out with this um final going in on this on page 261. just real quickly all the terms uh really um matching all the other groups uh including the other median confer groups such as confidential and management the only thing that we kind of improved upon the agreement is on page 261 because the current agreement officially says single option three we don't have such option on our mixing health plans anymore so both parties agree that we will strike that and then just show you know every year just we have the mystic uh uh plan options it makes sense rather than you really um you know putting down here every plan because that could change as well because it's based on the mystic board basically so that's the only thing um that i like to
point out other than that is pretty much the same 12. okay thank you so much for sharing uh any questions trustee carolyn sorry i didn't realize i'd be first no comments no questions thank you nothing for me thank you no questions anywhere thank you very much and delighted to see this come through public comment thank you yes barbara martinez principal of pacific grove adult education i'd just like to thank the board on behalf of the adult school teaching staff that recognizes the need for the increase for cola and approving the increase for staff i'd also like to say thank you to our teacher representative jennifer hall who's really stepped up and shown her leadership skills in working with director manky and and um song in um working through this agreement so thank you very much
very appreciated thank you any other public comments at this point okay i moved for approval of the pacific grove unified school district's adult education teachers agreement i'll second that motion was made by christy dawson seconded by brian swanson roll call vote please president yes hi motion carries next we'll move on to the lgbtq plus pride month flag review dr porus thank you madam president this item actually was brought forward at the request of the board last year uh if you will recall the board had approved a resolution to go on in perpetuity acknowledging and celebrating the lgbtq plus pride month um so that uh resolution stands um in file in the board until such time that the board wants to change it however noted in that action the board did comment that they wanted to
review the presence or display of the pride flag um to decide what day or week in june that the flag might be displayed on the flagpole and so um this is uh up to the board in terms of how you'd like to uh decide that this is on action so that you can go ahead and make that statement and that order as you like one recommendation i have for you and i'm again this is just myself watching what has happened in some of the districts around as a recommendation um i believe that it is very important for us to acknowledge and respect this month it's difficult because it's in june and the students are gone uh um we wanted to bring this in this month because we're still in the school year so we're able
to the very least acknowledge that we'll be celebrating the month next month um one recommendation was made and again um this is just simply an option the board might have several districts have decided to display the diversity flag which is inclusive of the lgbtq plus community but also includes pretty much every other group that diversifies our community and makes us a better and stronger place and so that is something the board may consider we have both flags available and so tied up to the board this is what's known as show-and-tell this is what the flag looks like um it's for the audience to see you may notice that a lot of the school district offices have this in their offices if you for example were to go into pacific grove high school you'll see it
next to both of the assistants in the office and mr garcia's office and i think it's a mr steinbeck's house as well a lot of the schools classrooms have this displayed as well this is displayed in my office as well by the door um so entirely up to the board we are fully prepared to have this flounder but again totally up to you and and i look forward to the uh community input to this uh aid the board and their discussion okay thank you for sharing that uh let's start trusty path well my recollection actually is we said in perpetuity the third week of june for the existing flag so that you and mandy said no no when we look back that's not actually what was there and this was 2019 because debbie was still
part of this um i guess i i feel like you are welcome to continue displaying in the third week of june without any problem whatsoever any further input i think i'm already there so i do like the diversity flag generally i think that avoids part of the problem that we had in some of the discussions before which is that you you easily go from saying lg be tq plus to the very next group and actually something that's already inclusive is um is probably better in the grand scheme so i'm fully in support and i certainly think you could continue to do that i certainly think the third week of june is uh for me would be a very easy yes so trustee swanson um i mean i'm in favor of continuing uh you know my
only issue with it was that it's lgbtq uh pride month and we fly the flag for a week i mean i i would love to fly it all month long i don't think i'm gonna get board support on that um but if anybody wanted to jump in on that i'd i welcome it um that's all i've got to say about it okay trustee carolyn swanson thank you um ralph that's the first time i've ever seen a diversity flag so i'm i was starting to google before you held that up to see what that looks like um and you say it includes all um i just my only hesitation in moving to the diversity flag is i recall years ago when um the resolution first came to the board we had a wonderful speaker who was
president of the um i think it's called the gsa at the high school and um they were they were a fabulous speaker and said that it made such a difference to the students that um that we were willing to to fly this flag so i would just hate to approve the diversity flag and then realize later that it it it somehow weakens um what our students are hoping for from us um but it sounds to me like you have you you're confident in that that flag would be um a way to acknowledge them as well as others and so i just want to really confirm that with you is that your understanding i i simply presented it as an option for the board watching what other districts have done in researching this we researched this
flag back when the board first had discussions about expressing um safe places on our campus if you recall this was way i think probably the end of last year and a lot of staff teachers classified administration took time to really take a look at what's going on out there what's available what what seems to fit the current thinking and consideration um and the issue of course was trying to be inclusive of everyone and so this flag came out stan stood out you can read on various websites they'll all say something a little different what we were able to find was this this flag is incorporates um our um lgbtq plus community and others however as you i don't i have no interest in taking anything away from the month because the month is there's a
reason for it so i was simply throwing that as an option um and i again i would encourage you to take public comment on this i i am not the expert i'm simply i'm trying to find um some options for the board and the community consider uh on this particular topic thank you so much for that clarification oh sorry carolyn keep going okay christy um so yeah as long as um and i'm i'm i agree with you dr portus i am excited to hear from public comment to just affirm that this flag represents what we're aiming for in this resolution and brian i agree with you um i would love to see it flying all month long our city flies it all month long and surrounding cities and surrounding districts all of the ones that
i that i know of i can't be don't quote me on that but i know mpusd flies at the city of uh pg and other cities so yes um i would love to have this flag up as long as it resonates with the students and the way that we're hoping so that um they feel heard seen and welcomed um in our schools and um okay that's all i have to say so yes i would love for the month for it to be up for the month okay dr rivera um i don't really have much to add as far as the flag it's going to be up when faculty and the students are going to be gone what i'm more excited about is what has happened during the school year to make sure that all of
our students feel comfortable and safe and specifically what jumps into mine is the the workshops that have been made available earlier this year and principal roach your name comes to mind so i'm i'm pretty sure you had one at your your school got a workshop on um lgbtqia plus yes we did yeah so i remember thank you for just confirming that so i think that's what end of the discussion is about the flag but i just want to say that i'm most excited about what we do while students are here to let them know we're thinking about them and we want them to feel safe and included and that we serve all students regardless of orientation gender identity i'm gonna i think there's two things we're looking at here before we hear public comment the
flag i think the design of the flag and knowing that it's out there i absolutely um support this flag because i think it does initially we talked that we were really pointing out one group and saying we're there for you but what i like about this is it's a message everywhere the design of the flag you you don't lose that it's lgbtq inspired so it's there and brian this will be the third person on this board tonight i think it should be flown for the entire month not for a week in some arbitrary week within uh i feel bad i know a lot of schools get out in a week two weeks our kids are gone so if they happen to go by or hear about it i want it up for the month so
those are the two things and we can kind of come down on that and let's open it up please for public comment well what before you do that oh i'm so sorry it's an arbitrary trustee it's a what it's not an arbitrary week it's the whole thing is it's my opinion trustee pam but thanks for giving me a little trouble here all right let's go back to the public are you are you suggesting this flag and not the other side i'm suggesting i like this flag because i think it speaks to everybody i think it's out there i think it's great the message is still there and i'm big on the month whether it's first second third or fourth week let's do all the weeks all right we're back to you ma'am let's go molly
please i think i think miss mccarty was first with their hand up okay we're gonna hear both of you no worries miss mccarty first hey there i just wanted to say that i think as a lesbian um teacher in this district i think that it's a huge thing for our district to show students who are diverse and have different um [Music] you know different different ideals than others that i think we should do it for the whole month it is a huge thing for for our students even though they're not in school it's a huge thing to show that um we support our students and we support our teachers so i agree with the whole month as being the idea for our flag thank you for sharing three more participants we're going to get good
public feedback thank you now molly hi there so so my son is a biracial black trans student who will be attending pg high school uh next year and i just i just asked him real quick i said hey which flag do you like and so he actually does like the diversity flag and he said that it does um you know it does represent him he feels like it represents him more um and so i support the diversity flag i also feel like it should be flown all month long and i'm just going to echo that um as well as i really think that along with the diversity flag there needs to be more diversity training and um just the usage of you know gender pronouns and um and being more sensitive to that and the
schools are actually beginning to make improvements and so i see that and i want to applaud the school for that also i i just think that in addition to flying it all month long there should be those efforts there to educate the students and the staff so that's it thank you for sharing molly elliott hazen please hello board thank you so much for allowing me to speak i just wanted to echo the points that's been made a few times now that i think the whole month is well warranted for flying a flag and recognizing this and in my opinion some of these flags should probably be fluent even longer than that but that's not on discussion right now the other comment i was just going to make is you know it is good to have
some voices now from the community particularly to me being represented by the flag but i do think it's an important opportunity to reach out and make get a bit more of a broad opinion to make sure this isn't letting is it making anyone feel left out sounds like that's exactly the goal of this flag is to not do that but it does seem like it would be a good opportunity to get some public more public comment on that thank you thank you for sharing okay all right so do we need to break this into two parts or it sounded like there were um overall a consensus for the new flag and the month does that feel comfortable okay so one motion so i'm gonna uh move that we the lg btq plus pride month flag
review we've done that and heard from public and board comments i move that we accept this please within one month a little bit more specific right uh the new flag including all for the full month so we'll be adopting the diversity flag and replace art instead of the lgbtq flag and we will fly for the entire month of june thank you for articulating what i was i will second your emotion we'll do it motion made by christy dawson seconded by trustee brian swanson month of june gay pride month all right let's have a roll call vote please yes hi motion carries five zero okay here we go now to board calendar and future meetings please anything going on dr porus no madam president at this point uh unless there are changes that the board would
like to make to the meetings thus far they are as presented okay thank you so much any bird comment on that i've got one comment yes i just want us to kind of keep an eye on the calendar and um we don't have to add it now but i would like to see more verbiage in there about um when we approve dr porto says contract when we do his evaluation and when we set his goals just so that we can all be on the um just so we can all kind of keep up on that and make sure that we're on the same page that was all i had okay sounds good uh there was some talk uh to adding a meeting in june dr porus but uh two of our trustees weren't here last
time and some of the conversation was that uh in anticipation of next year and some things we might want to need as a board that we it's better to wait until august there was some talk about june but it's a pretty packed month so i think it's good so we won't change anything at this point okay well that's it's late christie i just saw my last note so i have one more comment yes um for the the possible field trip for the board to go and visit the equine healing collaborative would we want to make that a special meeting and put that on the calendar i think we'd have to decide if the board wants to do that first yes i would think we would yeah the board would need to decide if they wanted
to do that before we'd slate it um you guys weren't here there was a brief thing about that so any uh thoughts about that i mean carolyn you'd like to do it and we were offered the opportunity to go there and experience it to see what it was like as long as some as as well as some comments about districts that had used it and how effective it was so uh comments did you were you able to read that or what do you think i saw it i don't know if we i i mean i would imagine we could arrange visits on our own if we wanted to actually go and do that too i don't i don't think it's necessary for us to make a field trip or an event out of it i
just remember the executive director um invited us all at once and and i don't want to put words in her mouth but i'm guessing it's because they're busy and they were hoping to kind of have you know do a description for us you know one time i'm guessing christy paff miss i see you're getting ready carolyn did you say dorothy's already involved in this she's a volunteer in the program okay thank you you're not gonna say no i i appreciate that there are programs out there for for for this but i i and i appreciate the invitation but you know there are other things okay um i don't i know that where it's frowned upon for us to socialize outside of this room that's true so whether on a horse or not yeah that's a
um that's what question i brings up like is this even something that we could even consider that's a good point we could if we said it as a special meeting and and held it in that manner that's why i was bringing it up for the future calendar so to try to clarify these things let's say we did do this as a as a special meeting and it still has to then be open to the public in some way right which seems logistically not only difficult but interruptive to their process as to what they're doing so again uh you know a couple of things it's a there's that and then there's also um progress oh recording i lost my training what you said was so important so there are so many programs too that it's like
that would be great to see and great to visit so um if we start to go and do a field trip to this and then it's like we get an invitation to do another field trip to another thing and that also has to be open to the public it could become it could really snowball into something i love what they're doing i'm familiar with the program um i appreciate that it's there but i don't think it's necessary for us to go and uh start the ball rolling with the field trip to that okay yeah it feels like it's awkward at this time trustee caroline and i know you're a kind of a driver of this but it sounds like you're already exposed to it through your daughter correct i mean you're out there you know
what it is well not exactly i mean dorothy used to volunteer years ago we haven't been since much before covet and the executive director was talking about her program to help staff socially and emotionally so i haven't seen the staff the the staff arm of it i thought it would be wonderful the other thing she mentioned was [Music] that she's working with other districts and so maybe we just politely decline her invitation to go out physically but we ask if she would like to submit something for a future agenda item or we direct staff to reach out to her for learning more about it because i think ultimately increasing our social emotional options for to support our staff is is the goal um and so this was one option in our community well theoretically i
think it sounds good what i'd like to hear about is uh is some hard facts like money and how it would look and then maybe we can go to the next level because those are things i want to know about prior to so at this time we would not it i'm not hearing from the board that we'd want to move on that but um i think additional information doesn't hurt for sure okay okay great so should we direct staff to respond to her invitation and ask her for maybe you know a proposal from them or what she was anticipating bringing forward to our district who's whose staff whose staff i don't know who you want to direct uh dr portas well i think um no i'm not real interested in giving him direction right now
for that norma so i i think that if the board could send a message and it could come from board president it would probably be the right uh voice for it to come from to reach out to the person that runs that program and say if you would like to come and make a presentation to the board she did then that would that would be fine because we could allot that but again the field trip that's off the table but if they want to come and actually make a present carolyn why don't you give me some information and i can reach out okay okay i'll forward the email that she sent um and so it's at the top of your inbox okay thank you so much all right no changes right now in board calendar
future meetings so no action needs to be taken so now let's move to information discussion we're moving along we're getting a momentum going again at the end of the year it's the 100 days of may that's the new thing director silva is she on the okay why don't we go ahead and start with director silva and she'll get us rolling thank you followed by dr rosh thank you are we waiting for ronnie you can't of course honey we're ready for you is she muted here she comes yeah she's got it going well you guys are uh aware of where we're headed right so if so if the board president is okay we'll go ahead and just start with you good evening everyone sean roach principal of pacific grove middle school good to see you guys
again i'm joined by our intrepid administrative team and we're here to give you guys some of some of the highlights of our california healthy kids survey for 2022 this is of course going to involve all sites some of the things we're going to do is we are going to show you some of um of the survey results for each of our sites we're going to show you that in comparison with with what the state average is we're also going to let you know some of the emphases that we have based on that data so let's go ahead and get started just press a little arrow thingy some of the topics we're going to talk about is perceived school safety school connectedness academic motivation caring adult relationships promotion of parental involvement and no substance abuse at
school below i'll let you guys take a look at the response rates they were all fairly high especially in comparison with the year prior so for pacific grove middle school and what i did was and the other administrators as well we bolded areas of emphasis but we'll let you guys go ahead and take a look at this perceived school safety at 69 percent there's the state average school connectedness which has long been an emphasis for pgms um 67 the next one is an area of concern obviously academic motivation which traditionally is an extremely high thing um however this year at 68 percent we are actually lagging behind the state coverage as far as academic motivation we're obviously we've talked a little bit about this as a staff all this information you guys by the way
has been presented to our our our entire staff our school site councils and our ptsas as well carrying adult relationships though slightly above state average that traditionally has also been an extremely high area for us as well promotion of parental involvement at 63 and no substance use at school 97 so these data are compared against the middle school averages for the state and i also need to to say that all of the sites have employed multiple means of measures so i know for the middle school we've done the core sel pre and post we've done the old weiss bullying survey pre and post we also did student voices and some of the data that we're getting back from those measures are a little bit contradictory to this so i want to talk a little bit
about academic motivation so just so the board understands some of the questions involved in that that were posed to students in seventh grade were i try hard to make sure that i am good at my schoolwork i try hard on my schoolwork because i am interested in it i work hard to try to understand new things when doing my schoolwork and i always try to do better in my schoolwork so those are the questions posed to the students and their response are based on those prompts and so in looking at some of the ways that we can fix that our site went through three days of udl training universal design for learning and one of the things that they really preach in that is to offer student choice so a student is able to kind
of select what way that they want to prove mastery it gives them some control and some say in what they're they're talking about and i think that really lends itself to academic motivation i also think it's important to connect academic requirements not only to the real world but to culturally relevant material i think that's a definitely an area that our district is going for um several years ago we as an entire staff learned about teacher clarity and the importance of student success criteria and i think the opportunity to have students understand clear learning objectives i think really kind of clears things for students and of course we've been a growth mindset school but i think it's it's important to kind of reassert that growth mindset mentality for the next one supports and engagement for caring
adults um we did raise one percent but um that's still an area that's a little bit off for us we we discussed this as a staff a lot of the staff members were like you know there was there was a bit of an impersonal relationship early on um masked i can see your eyes i don't know if you're smiling you're angry that kind of thing and so there was a little bit of a lag in that and so again i think udl is an important thing the more student choice the more voice they have in their education i think that's a very important thing we continue to rely heavily on our social emotional curriculum which is our character strong program we instituted something this year called the chill games every couple of weeks we get
all the kids outside kind of like what we did with red ribbon ball and like we had a a gigantic musical chairs and i would say three-fourths of the kids were out there just watching having fun so anything to kind of let the students see that we're actually adults that we do fun things we mess up and that kind of thing and also we're really a big sight on restorative practices so we really individualize it is not a black and white thing as far as discipline is concerned or you know students having issues with other students we like to individualize that and take their backgrounds into account that's how we're using the data you will see this in my sepsa for sure and now i would like to turn it over to shane thanks mr
roach shane steinbeck assistant principal at the high school same data points that the middle school used i'll highlight here as well perceived school safety 69 percent state average being 54 quite pleased with that school connectedness 58 state average 55 academic motivation 63 percent in the state average at 72. i'll go back to that one um carrying adult relationships at 55 and the state average of 58 uh promotion of parental involvement at 46 and the state average at 44. and no substance abuse use at schools 96 and the state average at 91. the two pieces i forgot to bold mine out i apologize but this two pieces that mr garcia and i are looking at with this primarily school connectedness um and academic motivation we both believe that in making the main uh growth need driver
school connectedness many of the other pieces will will kind of follow suit um some of the things that we've implemented this year we can give a lot of credit to actually actually mrs selfridge who's worked in our as our leadership group one of the examples and i'm sure you're aware that our asb meetings have been moved to lunch so we're actually seeing quite a lot of students in there uh participating in you know the democracy that is basically asb leadership as of recently i want to say that was implemented in february and it's been going quite well so it's a fantastic example of you know getting those kids involved creating more school connectedness which both mr garcia and myself believe will filter into some of these other pieces particularly academic motivation um dr hakwist is
what has been working tirelessly in creating our instructional leadership team which will be brought back to the forefront next year our ilt he has one department member from each of our departments that's full bore going um each each uh jenna hall for example i believe is one of the fantastic teachers head heading the english department for example and um i think that's going to make headway as far as um motivating our students our academic motivation and filtering out to the rest of our staff our plc work has always been there but mr garcia has worked extremely hard and i have to give kudos to sally richmond she was really the driver in moving our bell schedule to next year as you know we're starting at 8 8 30 a.m we're moving back a little bit
in that regard and we've actually put in a flex time in the middle of the day 40 minute flex time every thursday students will actually have a homeroom teacher so if i'm a freshman teacher i'm going to have 20 to 25 students that i'm going to see every single week we think inherently that's going to help with academic motivation and particularly the piece that the caring adult relationship where you know you know how it is uh ms dawson you know you get through the school year you're making the connections with the kids if you see them every single week in that same group you know it really does wonders for our groups of kids and connecting back to the school and making connections with these adults some of the things we did this year that
i think we've made headway with with our speakers some of you were able to come out and see shamil gary who i thought did a fantastic job we're going to continue that trend i mentioned our asb leaderships and really creative ways to enhance student voice i think mr garcia came with a primary goal of increasing our awareness of cultural diversity and increasing the amount of student voice that can be heard throughout the school day um just in spades and that's really what we're looking for forward to and i will move on now i have one question before you go uh i i get academic motivation i mean i'm glad you're working on that parental involvement i don't understand caring adult relationship is that are the questions designed for someone at your school or is it
someone in your life your community i i'm just curious how that because that that number feels yeah so the the the questions for that is if what you're asking president dawson uh caring school so the the students were asked there is a teacher or some other adult from my school who really cares about me who notices when i'm not there who listens to me when i have something to say and the responses to those were either strongly agree agree down to disagree strongly disagree if i can recall so that that's where that data point came from and a lot of times that effort just quickly i mean the teacher at the door as people walk in and the kids and talk to them how was that this weekend how was that competition where were you
yesterday how you feeling what's going on that's that's an easy kind of fix where it's a little bit of an effort and it goes such a long way so i hope because that's that's kind of rough i mean that's just over half who thinks someone cares so i think those flex times it's called flex time but i'm sure you're doing it at this point as a home room you know for kids and i think that's gonna really do well for us i instituted that with a bunch of people on a committee's last district and it does it allows them just to hunker down a little and kind of give a home feel that they lose sometimes in the upper grades good deal thank you for sharing that absolutely um uh some uh community high school
information perceived school safety 63 that's fantastic that's good um school connectedness 63 amazing um i just have to give crops props props to uh miss dieter over there she's doing a fantastic job um academic motivation 58 uh carrying adult relationships almost 80 percent it's small and it's intimate and you're you're interacting yes absolutely uh promotion of uh parental involvement 65 and no substance abuse use of schools 88 um in speaking with mr garcia a lot of the vision and the approach that he's taking with community is very similar to the high school so i think what i said about the high school really reflects what will be happening at community as well good deal thank you for sharing grove um once again we uh looked at some of the same categories that our friends at
the secondary schools looked at starting off with school connectedness ours was at 84 percent the state average being 74. i think that one of the reasons why the number is pretty high is because our student council started up again this year and had a really meaningful role at our school that when we were you know limited in terms of the activities that we had at lunch the student council purchased some extra games so that students could have like a board game area to play at lunchtime they also purchased some little soccer nets the little pop-up goals so that we could add soccer to the third third level and when the students came to uh you know administration with that idea and they saw that we acted on it i think that's one of those things
that helps students feel connected to uh school also we're really fortunate you know uh at the elementary level that the students get to spend the entire day with the same teacher and so it's that teacher that um pauses after recess there's a conflict and works it out with the students it's that same teacher that absolutely knows when that student is absent from a class and is welcoming them back when they do return to school so um that that smaller setting seeing the students regularly day after day really helps to make people feel more connected and we know that joy and happiness um is related to feeling connected and that when we feel separate that the opposite is there fear frustration and anger and so um you know we put a lot of work into that
at force to force growth and we think that's uh part of the reason why um the number is where it is as far as academic motivation goes it's 88 with the state average being at 86. we think that that once again has to do with that caring adult being in place not not only the teacher but the in instructional aids and then also the great parent is support at home that everybody has to work together to make the student feel motivated to achieve and because of that um you know the number came out well the caring relationships number is right about even with the state state number and so um you know uh that i think is um you know indicative of the setting that that we have at school and our goal of trying
to make a loving environment for our students to lay the groundwork for them to be able to learn as much as possible the area that we're going to focus on the most right now is that perceived school safety it was 71 when the state average for elementary schools is 81 from 2019 to 2021 it's interesting because the numbers in 2019 and 2020 um were artificially high um because we were removed from school so the numbers as far as the perceived school safety last year were very high and so this number dropped because we came back to school and those interactions that didn't happen we were away from school started to happen again i think that what we are learning from the data that we have this year is that we need to be a little
bit more clear about the rules at our school the rule clarity we scored at 66 percent with our students when the state average is at 86 per percent and so i think that that adjustment back to school also comes with it the rules of the school and that we need to um you know improve our efforts across the board to not only explain the school rules but also to explain the kind of restorative action that is going to occur if a rule is broken we don't necessarily want to think in terms of consequences we want to think in terms of other means of correction and that restorative action is one of the um you know important ways that we want to try to rebuild a relationship that gets broken when someone is hurt by another
person whether it be physically emotionally or intellectually the anti-bullying climate was at 67 percent with the state average being 76 and this is also one of those that is a bright flashing light for us we spend so much time with the toolbox and trying to teach the students the skills that they have uh within them to either resolve conflict or calm their own anxiety that i think at times or school i might have lost focus on sending a real clear anti-bullying message and i take full responsibility for for that and so um next year um that is going to be an emphasis at forest grove and i'm really appreciative to the work that mr keller did to bring in a couple of assemblies that we're going to be able to do early on in the
school year to kind of set the tone for for for our campus so we can see that number go up if there are any questions i'll take them thank you for sharing all right thank you mr roger we have their colleagues sean geller principal at robert down elementary school um again we stayed with the same topics that the other schools were focusing on and you can see that with perceived school safety 85 percent of our fifth graders felt that our school was safe and again those numbers are coming from uh the top so there's another question that says you kind of sometimes that's not included just to be clear on that the ant anti-bullying climate which i'll talk about on the next slide is very similar to the statewide average and just like mr rogerman
was saying and i want him to not take so much responsibility because the exact same things are happening at uh robert down and as the year is almost over i'm reflecting with you know we have 180 days of school has there been a conflict free day at robert down and the answer is no and we have frank knows he's there he's helping us thank you trustee rivera i think kids have had a tremendously hard and difficult time coming back to school and we've talked as educators throughout the year of wow many of these kids are still emotionally back as if they're in the last grade level and just trying to bring them up back has been so difficult and i will say that i have used my toolbox tremendously and if i have used my
toolbox i know the kids and the staff are doing the same so we will be focusing on that as well i'll get to that next flight uh with school connectedness again i'm glad to see that we're above the statewide level again i i want that to be a hundred percent and um we're going to focus on that as well as a school for academic motivation i think as a district this is a high number i i love that number again you add the other levels into that it's closer to 100 percent for carrying adult relationships obviously we're tied with the state i'd like to see that to be higher as well with the promotion of parental involvement i think that has ticked downward at our site because of the covid uh protocols that we put
into play and you know parents let us know about that and i did add in the little piece of students feeling frequent sadness that's the top two layers if i were to add the sometimes it actually goes up to about 90 percent of kids feeling sadness so that's something i just want to throw out there because it's on our radar so this is what we're going to really focus on for next year and as mr rogerman mentioned we will be having some anti-bullying assemblies come to our campus the morris brothers are a very high energy anti-bullying message that is one group that we'll be having we all both mr roger and i have also agreed to have a food allergy anti-bullying speaker come and that person will be coming the tuesday after we start school
and that's also obviously to raise awareness about food allergies on campus and to make sure those kids aren't being bullied during lunchtime if they have one um in speaking with sonda fruiden in reflecting about the year she has made a pledge to really get into the classrooms to make sure every single grade level is has the exact same number of circles of caring throughout the year because when we discussed and reflected she she found that there were some grade levels that didn't have the same but i'll tell you what she and zoe roach have been tremendous on both of our campuses and i can't thank both of them enough for the school connectedness again i would like to follow forrest grove's footsteps i should know better my son was the president of forest grove his
fifth grade year and i was an activities director so it's something that i've always kind of kept in the back of my head but i just threw this idea out to a couple fourth graders this year and they are so excited not only to have a student council that can have some video announcements for our school but also to bring the garden rangers program about sustainability in our society and it's been a goal of mine since year one at four at robert town to provide a community composting system where people can come i mean i know mr rogerman and his custodians feel the same we have kids with these trays and now that monterey county and our state have required the the food scraps and also more composting to be more apparent on in our
homes i want to bring that awareness to our campus and have students take responsibility provide them leadership opportunities and again i spoke with some fourth graders and they're really excited about being garden rangers on our campus next year are there any questions well let's just open this this was so well orchestrated as you guys went with the handoff it was like uh watching the olympics of seeing that baton handed off comments i'm just curious is will there be eventually comparative data from other schools available is this or is this just within our circle here is that about like county and the state yeah yeah yeah it just so you know i believe those uh numbers are available it exists yeah it's it's something that any uh member of the public can access okay through the
california healthy kids website you can go on and select the district um i i believe you can compare districts but i i haven't done that personally because i'm worried about my school but i think that can be done yes all right i also think it's important to to remember that um this is really kind of a snapshot in time so this is one singular moment within 180 school days um and the year to year progression is not comparing the same students it's actually comparing different students yeah okay thank you for pointing that out that that's important to know too i mean i think we would if we did take a look at other schools we would see i'm assuming similar data especially when it comes to motivation i mean i think that's something that not
only students are struggling with i know i'm struggling with that except for fishing and they in in various industries are facing the same thing as we've come back um and tried to not you know get do things that were you know get more normal again and it's been very difficult and we're seeing that so thank you it's a great presentation trustee caroline yeah thanks christy um i always wonder how we can um kind of you know make these changes from this data and make the make goals that are measurable so we can tell if if where if we are really making a difference because it is a good point that you know every year it's different kids so it's not really like um i guess it's the best comparison that we have but it's not
exactly a comparison um one of the principals mentioned that this would show up in their sipsa and um can i'm not sure who that was um actually probably several of us mr roach okay yes yeah so just really briefly will you talk about kind of the tree of how this data gets plugged into you know goals at the site and then gets implemented and then you know hopefully ultimately like to the lcap we just talk about that really briefly absolutely um first of all um i think all of the administrators up here kind of look as at this as a a baseline simply because we are back in person and so so this is going to be kind of our baseline for comparison in in upcoming years so what i did was i took the
california healthy kid survey which is rich and deep and very full of data but i also mixed in what we've done with the core sel data the old weiss bullying data and then our students voice survey data and looked for some kind of um trends that we're seeing and the two that i highlighted this evening are two that are going directly into the sipsa so obviously if this is a goal to increase that by a certain percentage say 10 um that you have to enumerate what steps you're going to take to make that increase happen and what you expect to have happen so what i did was i took this to my school site council i took this to the ptsa and i presented it to my staff on on mass and we came up
with some things that we're going to put in our sipsa to see if we can kind of change this again i think the caveat here is the school year began with with a certain trepidation and and fear and students really kind of trying to remember how to do school after you know close to two years at home um and so i i think it is you know regardless of you know whether it's a snapshot or whatever i think it's important to keep these goals in mind and make sure that when we get this next year we've made some strides in those areas while maintaining and improving the other areas as well thank you that's all i have thank you trusty paff yeah i um thanks for the presentation um it's interesting to see what the
state looks like but frankly you know our job is not improvement against the state necessarily it's improvement against ourselves and what do we look like last year moreover that state data is now seriously skewed away from a rational comparison because it's it's two years of hey we're not even in classrooms against a year in classrooms um this data is always interesting for for lots of reasons one is you know if you take it on a rainy day you're going to get a different result than a nice sunny day so take it in the sunniest day you can find in february we always have some if you're looking to improve um i appreciate that you're saying you know the the safety item is interesting um it would be more interesting to know really where we were
three years ago and i'm not asking you to bring that back um but that's the data against which the comparison is and as you just said and this is really where i was going with this um a lot of trepidation coming back and i think that's a good word um because you know frankly we weren't here for two years so if suddenly you're you know you started as a third grader and uh well i was about to throw a name out but i won't do that big old mr so and so was you know scary when you were in third grade and now you have him in fifth grade but you know what everybody was scary in third grade but by fifth grade he's not scary but you know what he's still scary because you're
in third grade i i don't know what to do about that you know um you're gonna see that it's gonna take a couple years to outgrow that so um i i think it's just going to be a little while this is hard data to really view i appreciate you going back into it um i wish this weren't described our district administers this test every year really it's a test it's a survey there's a difference yes yeah and i i think you know i hear that everybody here is saying you know we're going to reach out in very specific ways and i appreciate doing that and as carolyn has pointed out figuring out how you're going to measure that next year is going to be interesting so thanks thanks for the presentation i'm really glad that
the state mandates this is taking it's a really holistic approach to to raising the children in the community um and i'm really happy to see how seriously you guys have all taken it and explain the different ways that um you're going to look at the data and then what you're planning for the future it's really excited about that the increasing caring circles the um uh the anti-bullying that's coming along so i just you know thank you for for doing that and thinking beyond the classroom is just delivering academic information but um really developing that that the whole child the health of the the social emotional and mr keller how you talked about you using your toolbox it's i really hope the parents of our children don't feel that they are above learning about these toolbox
because man i've seen so many adults that could really could use the toolbox so i hope they do take that to heart thank you just one quick comment about that um i i think that both mr keller and i received several um conversations throughout the school year where parents reference um you know trying to teach the children the same tools that we're using in in school so when that when that happens especially if we're having a difficult phone call with a parent or maybe there's a conflict at uh school and their child didn't act maybe the way that they had they had hoped um you know they uh they're leaning on these tools too and um i have to say that even when parents have come in and um you know like this last week
and weren't necessarily happy about having to have the kids wear masks again um the conversations were respectful and really the way they should take take place when you know people have a difference of opinion so it was a great a great example of hopefully what we can live up to as a society but i just wanted to let you know dr rivera that our parents are using the tools yeah thank you that's wonderful thank you for sharing that you're not only helping our children but helping the families of the district so thank you i'm going back to trustee path i had some i kind of scrolled off my screen as uh things changed sean keller you know you said 14 to 90 when you go from sadness you know i look at those numbers and
i think we're not asking the right questions and the state isn't asking the right questions we're all sad i mean to say sometimes of course i'm sad this and particularly with children and particularly with teenagers if you aren't sad you're losing out on emotional growth this is the only way forward is to experience a broad a broad gamut so i i feel sometimes like we see these and the state has you know they put us in a position for failure of course they're sad a hundred percent of them should be sad once in a while you know my my favorite story i won't get into who this is but is a is an adult who who who told me once he said yeah my my daughter was very sad because of a new job and
then 10 minutes later she came over and gave me a big hug and said oh you know what it's gonna work of course she was sad but it's okay that's the growth that's what we're looking for so i'm not worried about that one at all thanks for watching thank you president pat but i will just say that you know i think we can all agree that the ultimate goal of teaching the toolbox is that they can help themselves throughout middle school which we know is just its own little special jungle oh yeah um but that they can they can uh create their own grit to be able to persevere and that's the whole point and and that's that's through you know our own site council surveys that we can throw out there to kids and
i think it would be really interesting to ask middle school kids because i know my fifth graders they told me straight up this year we we don't want to have to use the toolbox we don't want to say those words anymore it's we're beyond that but then i keep coming back to them with hey it's interesting we're having this conversation because none of you in this conflict use your toolbox how interesting so again it's just having them understand that these are life skills that even when you're 52 like myself you must use them to be able to survive in this crazy world you look way too young to be 52. um i just uh to sum up very quickly i got involved with this when i was on the board at the ymca over in
mountain view and one question can really skew results i mean this is a stats experiment like no other but i do think that you guys are on track as far as absolutely picking what is germane to the growth what what can you do even if it's sunny rainy snowy i don't care if there's not a caring adult that to me is like a pretty big thing and as we all know people students that will talk about success in school go back to one adult it could have been the coach it could be the attendance secretary i always think it's the teacher but obviously somebody the principal what the heck uh but somebody cares about them and i think this just screams to me messaging and and focusing on verbage because obviously anti-bullying is intrinsically rooted
in your toolbox but it's it's maybe the new word to actually use you know instead of zero tolerance anti-bullying we don't want to see bullying here so you guys are all over it it's exciting it does create a better life for these kids all these pieces so thanks for the good work and get out there and let's see these uh results appreciate it yahoo public comment they're sad they don't want to share right now it was too much it's too much all right so next uh we're moving on here quickly a through g improvement grant plan and here's the man with the plan all right share my screen here all right uh larry hagquist toast up pacific grove high school here to present the a through g completion improvement grant uh grant plan uh i
the plan is in the board packet and so for for you to read it's not too long and just wanted to share a little bit of information about it we're going to be up here i'm going to be up here tonight and then again on june 2nd so i am to present it to the board and then we're going to have follow-up at a subsequent meeting we have to approve the plan so tonight is simply the presentation and uh so i'd like to just start by answering the question what are the a through g requirements and um so i have them right here uh a through g requirements are the requirements that high school students uh need to complete in order to be eligible uh for ucs or csus um a is two years of
history social science b four years of english c three years of math through im3 or statistics d two years of science e two years of world language f one year of visual or performing art and g one additional a through g elective for anybody watching uh you can go to the pghs website to find this information uh it's on the course catalog which i've linked right here it's on page 2 of the course catalog for future perusal right here and this actually shows the counselors did a wonderful job on this and i believe they presented this last year the difference between the graduation requirements and the minimum a through g requirements so how do we improve so this grant is about fifty thousand dollars and is uh going toward trying to improve our a through
g completion rates um and uh students in order to be a through g eligible students need to maintain a c minus grade or higher in all a through g courses and so students that aren't getting c minuses immediately are not eligible for a through g and so what we want to be able to do is to provide a little uh extra opportunity for them to make up those credits currently our credit recovery program we only allow credit recovery for students that have failed the course so uh what when they take an edmentum course a credit recovery course they recover the units so that they can be eligible to graduate so if you think about what what i just showed you the difference between the graduation requirements and the a through g requirements what we're trying
to do with our proposal here is to offer new opportunities for students to recover d grades to get them up to c minus so we can get more students that are a through g eligible this newly proposed program will allow us to set our sites a little bit higher so that we're not just aiming to get more students to graduate but to get more students to be a through g eligible so what we're proposing is uh to offer a credit recovery course next year um it would be a seventh period course credit recovery course for students that are in need there i believe that's my last slide any questions go ahead please um so i looked up unduplicated students and it's just a student that's not counted twice yeah so uh these those are some
of the the students that receive funding for being in certain like marginalized categories low-income students that get free and reduced lunch students that are el and what that really means is that uh they you can't count them if they're in more than one category you can't count them twice for the funding okay thank you and then also thank you for presenting actually what a through g is i knew it was a completion or the requirements um but to see it laid out as far as what the requirements are was was very nice i know that at the community college right now there's separate pathways to go to csus versus ucs but now they're actually emerging yes finally talk you know bringing that together um so why do we care right uh because the uh what's
happening in that is that they're removing the language requirement in order to go both to csu and and uc and i'm just wondering if you've heard yet because i noticed that two years of world language is up there if you've heard that trickle down through the a through g requirement yeah okay i'm just curious yeah i i i don't think there's a uc that's happy with two years of language i mean it may say that but um yeah yes and you if you notice on the um the publication that the counselors put out in the course bulletin there's i didn't add them all but there's some rep like it might say two years but recommend it through those types of things absolutely um my question would be this the a through g is tough because
if a kid gets too far along they cannot catch it up so the um finding them and scooping them up quicker to allow for recovery and and to kind of get ahead um there's the afternoon course this summer school here is primarily recovery correct right now that's what i was just mentioning right now the summer school is there's a lot of kids to scoop up and we're scooping up the kids so we can get them to graduate so this is a new program that would uh scoop up kids who may be on the path to graduate but they might have um a d or a couple of d's that are making them not be a through g eligible and getting them into a course and sometimes they don't know so it has a lot to
do with us proactively identifying these kids and saying hey listen you're only one or two classes away if you retake this class you can be you know on the path to uc or csu eligible and by retaking i'm curious i mean where where do you see them retaking i mean do you have kids that who say got a uh a d in us history would you allow them to sit in on u.s history as a 12th grader unless history has a 12th grade well when it wouldn't necessarily be their year to take that yeah i mean if it's something that's if if they're one course away and and their their d is uh you know getting in the way of them being a3 eligible we would try to get them into that program now 12th
grade you know depending what if it has to be early in the year and the edmentum course is some kids can get through it pretty fast i mean it's it's actually quite difficult it's much more difficult than the acellus curriculum that we used to have so i've ushered several students through edmentum and it is rigorous it's not easy um and they're gonna have to spend a lot of time getting through there so i you know i'm running the summer school program right now and that's one of my biggest concerns is how am i gonna get these kids in you know one month through a semester the other thing is have you taken the time to identify where the toughest courses are i mean i i remember ours was chemistry was like the fall down yeah
we definitely kill her we have some core sorry dr rivera but it's hard for most of us we definitely have some courses that are uh ones that are kids are having are struggling with okay good are there comments trust me well yeah so i've read this and reread it a couple times actually um and i come away with in summary what we're really doing we have a grant money that says look not only are we going to try and get credit recovery we're going to make sure that these classes through edmentum are a to g allowable which is not true just for credit recovery right credit recovery allows you to graduate high school but not necessarily rewind one second i've missed it yeah yeah it's fine it gives you it it allows both credit recovery
and a to g whereas just straight credit recovery does not necessarily give you energy yeah okay that's what this is so we're through admentum if i say well you know what i i flunk chemistry and uh because i didn't have dr rivera i'd like to have doctor right so can i take through these funds can i take it at npc can you take chemistry at npc how do i facilitate taking it even closer and perhaps in person with somebody who actually you know he tells me he invented nylon but i don't know if it's true or not but yeah i don't think that that's part of our current plan like that i can say right now that that's not part of the current plan because that might undermine some of the classes that we have
on campus if students were just enrolling in the mpc courses okay well i'm envisioning that they've already taken the class and not succeeded so yeah how do you if they don't succeed that's what the idea is that we'll get them into the a through g credit recovery course okay do we have a method for allowing our our students to go and say you know what i want to take this easily and readily at mpc because i want to do that well transportation is a big issue let's talk about summer and well so you know i i thought a year and five weeks well i thought well for some kids yeah i can't speak to that okay it's fair it's not part of your proposal look it's thank you it's it's money we're using we're going
to try and use it as wisely as possible it's clear you have a plan thank you very much thank you thank you for reading it over again because i'm you know i'm trying to synthesize into into where does this really go i think that's those are good i think they're great questions so thanks larry trustee swanson no comments trustee brian do you have a comment yeah i just said a point to clarify here as i'm looking at page 275 where you've got the financial breakdown so it's 23 grand in the 22-23 school year and then 23 grand again allocated for 23-24 that 45.93 for credit recovery is that yes between those no so this was just these this is estimate very stochastic in nature just kind of setting a target out there because we don't
know it really is going to depend on the teachers that we hire because the teachers come at different rates so the 23 was actually a high estimate if we get a senior teacher that's teaching that they're going to be more expensive and somebody that's you know not is going to maybe be a little less expensive but so that was just a number that was okay all right and then um i remember this came up i had a similar question a few meetings ago with some other grant money that we received but this isn't ongoing so right is that correct yeah so we'll we're going to do this and then at some point we'll have to fund it ourselves or stop it yeah which is always the problem with grants yeah it's like here you go
and two years later and good luck funding it for the ongoing but it's nice i'm glad again that we're doing it it's just a future problem yeah so we thought about that too it's the money's there for the current two years yeah and it's going to allow you to kind of discover things that work or don't work or and and those things are not always going to cost money that's more just the knowledge on how to be better educators and get to those kids fast that's important thank you so much we look forward to it any other questions public questions at this time larry do you know how that fifty thousand dollars was determined in the grand scheme yeah you know over 597 million yeah that's how much it was it was that big of
a grant yeah but how did we get 50 and not 150 or 105 or five you know well i've i i could maybe follow up with you on that one i do have a he's the numbers guy yeah i do have a good presentation that uh i attended uh with slides uh like it kind of gives a little bit more of a breakdown but i can't remember off the top of my head okay uh yeah i'll ask you another time i'll share it with you okay that'd be great yeah you bet all right thank you so much for that tonight all right now we're moving to future agenda items as we wrap stuff up for this evening um i want to start with the uh board member requested parent orientation for board meetings and i
know csba had been in contact with us so the cost for this would be twenty seven hundred dollars and what i wanted to suggest is that i would be delighted to volunteer and maybe anybody else on the board to have an evening maybe a coffee or an open house where people were interested how do i get on the board what do i do what does it mean what's the timing i think we could do it in a very user-friendly manner and save some nice money i i mean i would hate to do this i i just don't believe there are people not doing it because of ignorance and if they wanted to it'd be nice to put it out there for them but 2 700 bucks for us to do it and if three people
came i just feel terrible personally thoughts on that guys and gal um i don't know if that's what the item requested was can you clarify christy are you saying you would have like a meet and greet so people can come and understand how the system of public schools work how they can advocate for themselves how the chain of command is if they want to contact the board how to contact like that type of thing or are you talking about running for the board well i guess the first question is didn't this come from you carolyn i don't know who this came from it did come from me so i was okay so i guess description yeah my my interpretation and that's why maybe you can help me is to help parents understand board meetings what
goes on is that what you were after yes um that was one of the things it was um i see a need so i'll start from the beginning i see a need and i've seen it year after year for our families to feel invited and be educated on how our public school system works on some basics like who the chain of command is when they have an issue at a school site a lot of folks don't know that you know go to the teacher then go to the principal or counselor then bump it up to the district office then come to the board a lot of folks don't know that um they don't really um they don't really know how to write to the board um a lot of times they'll talk themselves out of
writing to the board or um there's just like a lot of kind of unknowing out there and so i was hoping that families could have an option to learn more about how our entire system works to know that we have electeds we have staff the staff are like i don't think very many people in our district even know that you know our board one of our main goals is we really only oversee one employee we only oversee the superintendent a lot of people think oh the i have a problem i'm going to go to the board or i'm not going to go to the board and so over the years i just i've seen it many times where i wish there was some educational platform for families to understand more about us and how we
work well i'm kind of still where i was i i thought it was more about the board if the concern is i think uh when you deal with um parent involvement whether it's ptsa i think that's where this would be more grassroots to me that that even at the elementary middle or high school that during uh you know whether it's uh orientations or counselors could talk about it or principals could talk about it where they would talk about here's what goes on i mean what you're describing is a highly complex thing i mean i didn't hear until i was on the board that uh you know we have one person that we're on in charge of and that's the superintendent but uh to pay 2700 i'm i'm trying to see who's going to be coming
i mean i think you're right people at different times have different questions confusion about certain things but i haven't known a lot of people who haven't what i've been more concerned about over my time would be um you know people uh who are have language barriers and then you have uh groups that advocate within the in my old high school there would be meetings on if you've got a problem here's where you go here's how you solve it here's the college career center here's this here's that so it feels like that knowledge is critical but it should be dispersed throughout the system i see what you mean and it definitely needs to be repeated and and be a layered approach so um this may fall under something that needs to be wrapped into our long-term
equity plan because i agree with you that certain language barriers or certain families with the targeted populations that we're constantly talking about and bringing them into the fold and getting their feedback that would be great to incorporate this um it doesn't have to come from csba i guess you know what long story short if i can read over what csba is going to provide in the training i would be able to let you know if it was reflective of what this item was okay and then we can go from there yeah because i do think there's a need but i think it could be handled and i i think uh the admin we see in front of us i think that's where it goes it starts there and then people ask who do i talk
to i mean teachers would ask who who should i go to about this should i is this a do thing or principle i mean that's the kind of thing you get training on and i used to with parents as parents came in with issues i would say here's where you start and then you here's the the succession of of individuals you'd want to see so i think the idea is good i'm not in favor of twenty seven hundred dollars to be spent and who shows up i think this should be an ongoing thing throughout so yeah would you please take a peek at it and see what they talk about uh can ralph can you send it to me i don't know where it is or what it is we have a representative that we're
working with with csba this is a new feature for them uh i i have thus far done this in dialogue i don't know what they have in writing i will need to ask her about that oh and then i can give it to you yeah that'd be great i'd love to read what it actually is thank you yes christy and carolyn honestly we've had this up here for a year and twenty seven hundred dollars you know to to actually settle and see and if it turns out it's it's such simple information that in fact you don't need it well then we've spent it exactly once if it turns out that csba has done you know the best possible job ever and this is information we can relay to me this is not the biggest sum
in the world and yes maybe it's better spent in the future on something else but a one time off to see really what they're trying to present seems to me i mean i appreciate let's find out a little bit more but uh at the same time um there was a reason it was placed here so all right so let's investigate further please it's been there for a year because uh dr poorest that's right so it's not like they were waiting for us we we couldn't get a connection until of late so let's let's do that carolyn we'll move on that another one i want to peek at is um the ask mission trails jpa to present and educate the board um we actually had a long chat about that and we voted four to one
against that so this should not be on here for the future we already voted it down oh i i agree okay okay we heard what the jpa is this was about funding it wasn't about programs it's about funding okay and the funding was it didn't make any difference if we were part of that jpa or not and it's up and down all the time so well i didn't want to bring it up last time because two of you weren't here but we had voted okay so this should be removed thank you if i may madam president the first item um how would you like that phrase on for future agenda the board current orientation item well i'd like it replaced into the circular filing cabinet called the trash can so i don't know what uh
my friend doctor yeah but it's already been mentioned there may not be so i would ask you to remove it and do we can do a little research and see then once we talk to trustee carolyn is is this it i think it's a massive topic and i don't care if it's 2700 or 5700 i think it's kind of crazy they can't even last okay let's wrap this up that's a couple i'm happy if we skinny it down a couple i had one i wanted to add ready the one i wanted to add is teacher of the year i feel like i understand in o nine it was removed and it feels a little to me like uh maybe a change of philosophy like everybody on the team gets a trophy kind of thing i
appreciate the resolutions but to me they're so broad and you have a lot of people that come up and talk about you did this for me you did that for me um i think it's nice to honor i don't think every site should be honored every year we're not that big of a district but i think if you did high school one year middle school elementary and then adult alternative or whatever so every so many years your site would be highlighted i don't think it's competitive i think teachers are who they are but i think um it's very it's a nice award and it would i think be much more powerful than just a resolution saying all teachers are great we love them all which we do but it would honor people that go above
and beyond and should get should get some recognition so i'd like to throw that out there that i don't like to see that reinstated thoughts do you want to direct staff if you're thinking if you're thinking that that would include some sort of money with the with the praise or just a certificate or i've never seen money i've uh given to you know now i know you can't do that a vacation to the bahamas can't do it but uh sometime there's a plaque sometimes the teacher of the year's picture hangs at the at the d.o as people walk in um you know i've in santa clara county they did a a dinner and uh did well hors d'oeuvres or stuff but it was every high school in the county i think the the the celebratory
would be that that person would be here maybe family invited and you make a big deal about what they've done i think it boosts morale unless you don't get teacher of the year and then maybe not so much i'm not in favor of it and we've got a lot of stuff to do and i don't want to add a teacher the year contest to that list it's not a contest it's a recognition okay well then i don't want to add the recognition to the list okay we got a lot of stuff to do okay uh other board members please i i think it's something worth looking at i'm not i'm not so quick to say no i think it's something that we could bring back to discuss and see what it would look like what
it would involve trustee caroline what did pap say it's a disgusting yeah he's all right carolyn my microsoft yeah i just said you know as a discussion point it's a discussion point and not you know it's it's there i i my gut feel is that uh i don't want to be managing at that level and that's kind of at the site but certainly i'll discuss it so managing did you say i couldn't i i couldn't hear you you don't want to be managing at that level is that what i feel like in some manner that's that's for ralph to make decisions on how he wants we don't pick it yeah okay i mean it would never be the board goes in and says hey at the elementary you're the one it's it's done by the
the the site i mean it's chosen at the high school it might be people vote on somebody who's uh started a meaningful thing well i think we're getting too deep into it right now if you want it is a future agenda item throw it on there we can we can talk about it it has to be a future agenda item perfect you know if we're gonna do it we can't do it tonight it's not on the agenda perfect i wasn't asking for it tonight thank you so much is this it madam president may ask do you want to include classified as well uh just certificated teacher um i think that's nice i'd have to think not coming from that background i'd have to think maybe throughout the district or something just numbers-wise we'll leave it
as teacher then and then start with teacher and yeah for a discussion and i can we make a motion or i guess i guess i can emotionally to um extend for five minutes because i've got a couple things listed here that i wanted to bring up oh and it's past 10 so i just wanted to extend it do we have a motion i'll make a motion that we stay till 10 10 tonight second okay motion was made by carolyn and seconded by dr rivera roll call vote yes hi okay it's a go carolyn okay thanks so um i just wanted to verify that on next meeting we're going to be having the selpa appointee applications that we're going to review and decide upon is that still on on target ralph we have the applications are
out and so at this point my understanding the last time we discussed this that the board would receive the applications um and you would uh take a look at this is the parent uh advisory for yeah and the deadline's tomorrow so i'm just thinking like meeting-wise is that gonna show up on the next agenda well we have them ready to go and our intent was to have it on the second um we have time the time is fine but my understanding was there were not going to be interviews but the board was going to review the applications and then make a selection um but we just need to include that as an action item so i i i've been at every meeting i'm a little confused so claire davies will not be making the selection
i thought it kind of came down through her it's no the board makes the appointment it's a board position okay um our my understanding from the last time was that we were to uh advertise the positions which has been done um we've received two uh applications i believe okay um and the board was going to take a look at those were distributed to the board you would take a look at this on your own and then at the meeting that it's agendized the board would make a decision as to who would be representing the district the option was not to pursue an interview at that time but it was just simply to select a person well would it be possible that special ed uh li as as an example claire would do an interview and
give us input i i'm i've would be a little um concerned about just looking at the paper and saying this is a person without seeing them talking to them knowing anything about them well certainly the board can decide how you'd like that process to happen um we were just following what the direction we were given last time it we just received the applications at this point because it's a board position um it seemed most logical to have the board decided again you can you can invite the parents and have a discussion here with the parents you can choose to manage that however you'd like to have that done i i defer to people who've done it in the past we haven't done it in the past it was selected by the board last time but
it was just one person yeah so we certainly can have a a recommendation made by our director of special ed and um and then she could review those applications and present you an option that believe this person would best be suited for that certainly can do that as well what do you think carolyn i mean i i think if somebody's been working with them and involved with them and as a parent and uh within the special ed program i'm sure welcome some input and i've been corrected there are six applications so far whoa even more sorry i think just the tricky part if i'm putting myself in the shoes of a person who applied and thought that i was applying and that it would be decided upon by my application how to how would i
feel if the process got shifted i don't know um i don't know part of me just wants to keep it how we originally stated to all of the folks who applied and then maybe next time we can shift the procedure um i think there are six people i think it's really uh an important role i'd like uh how soon could we look at the applications i think we can get those to you by monday i i still want input from uh someone who might have knowledge i i i it's too much for us to that we're looking at an application and making a big decision with no knowledge of these people i i just can't even imagine it anybody else i mean it was less maybe i i don't remember deciding that we'd never talk
to him or anything i know we instead we'd look at the applications but i didn't think so this question was last video it wasn't it was it was at one or two meetings i don't remember when it was i have the notes down from it though but it was we this was the direction we're going when we were asked well i think the direction we're going is fine i think we need a little bit more that's all i'm not saying we don't look at it because we want to look at it but would it be nice to have some input about these people and who they are and well there let me just throw another option up for you then another option is you could select two trustees to sit in an interview session with
director davies over the course of the next before the second and that would form a panel that could interview the candidates and make a selection that way so the board is then involved and has a chance to through a subcommittee take a look at those two and then bring that forward for board action that's that would be fine too because two two board members would not represent the brown act violations so we could talk with um director davies and set up a time between now and june the 2nd to do that interview that's an option as well i'd be happy to volunteer to do that i'll do it with you okay let's do that then we get a p does that feel okay it's okay okay so we're developing a committee for uh that process
okay now i'm gonna go fast okay so my next thing is um i think we need to add discussing masking thresholds for the june 16th meeting if you don't already have that on your list ralph we talked about it and i believe everyone was in agreement um and then um ralph i did read that civil grand jury no i can't say i read the civil gen grand jury report i read the article related to it and um they mentioned that one thing that they recommend is to continue having a behavioral support staff until 25-26 school year at each site i just wanted to put that out there i don't know if that needs to be an agenda item but i would like to hear from you um if we're gonna do that if we're doing
that and and what your your thoughts are so that's sweet that's great and we did talk with support staff about that very topic and we're working on some ways to make that happen because we currently have that help already in progress but we're looking into how that can be funded and what that can look like okay we have a lot of time to we have 90 days to respond to the grand jury so we have time but yes we are aware of that we can bring that back to discussion on june 16th i guess okay yeah that's great um and then i don't know how to go about this but i'm going to bring it up so you can guide me um so that the walk of remembrance in pacific grove that i mentioned that
just to me just really speaks to the need for our schools to incorporate this history into them and so how do we go about that do we just give you direction if we all agree and then you work on to incorporating that are you referring to chinese american history in our classrooms yes related specifically to like the point alone ease um you know fire the like everything that was um mentioned um at the walk of remembrance it's in the resolution that um well they'll be entirely up to the board in regards to how you'd like to direct staff to move forward with that i know that in term we've thought we discussed that back in november when the equity issues were we were discussing those and we have talked with folks in the community about
bringing in history of chinese american there's a lot of research that has to happen with that certainly um we're in progress talking about it as part of the equity group but um that would ultimately be an adjustment to the curriculum which the board would be responsible for directing staff so um i would suggest if the staff would like that as a future agenda uh it would be to um add curriculum for chinese american history uh to um all classrooms in the school and we need to kind of get a definition of what that would look like for the board okay i'm in favor of putting that on as an agenda item um so is the rest of the board in favor of that i get touchy when we start uh dictating curriculum you start getting
into just problems locations to incorporate local history i mean there is there a way to do that that doesn't feel like a slippery slope into into well it is a slippery st i mean you could talk now about women's rights and what's going on in the state of our country which is deplorable and i say listen i attended a march and we need to start putting for young women choices and how i live and blah blah i mean you you open a can of worms i mean it's topical and it matters because where we live but again it's it's a suggestion it's like uh the the narrative that we've talked about i i'm not comfortable telling classrooms you need to teach this this and this because we like it we want it and what's the
repercussion if you fail well if you don't if somebody doesn't get to it that year do you you know is that a write-up is that it gets very odd teachers are choking always with what they have to get through and if you start adding more pieces um yeah it's difficult i don't like it differently ralph you you have a uh you're already working on diversity and what you want that to look like and i don't you're going to end up bringing that back to us well it's there yes it's not just just me it's the whole group but yeah i understand an equity plan in terms of how we get to increase inclusion and diversity in the district it certainly is not going to immediately talk about these kinds of specific actions because we're trying
to get to a more global more higher level of thought i mean i can certainly ask the principals to discuss this with their um humanities teachers and and uh and the elementaries and see to what degree this topic is already being discussed but it does get discussed in some of the local history um certainly at this point i i really couldn't answer that without having spoken with the principals so i i think that the item is that you continue to report back on on how you're creating that in the overall curriculum without us dictating what specific portions of it might be okay yeah i mean hopefully people are talking about where they live why they live here what's the history i think it's very important but i don't want to go on and tell teachers
is what you're going to teach it's not good carolyn does that does that at least push us in the right general direction for you um i mean i know things take time to implement so if the board currently isn't comfortable with exploring um implementing or investigating that right now um i'll just wait i guess i mean comfortable is not really the word is it and and implementing's not the word it's i mean it's up to you guys i mean i've already i i would i think this is something worth investigating and truly you know hopefully getting this history into our schools it's a shame that we have kids graduating who's never known this specific history that's happened in pacific grove i always find that that that statement's ludicrous i mean walking down on the beach
on the bike path you see it i mean are are we that incapable of reading what's written on the wall and we're here my kids did know this so my kids did know this well that's great it was taught here wasn't it i have john i'm saying how i feel about it i think this would be great to include in the historical curriculum in our classrooms okay here's the direction have a chat if you don't mind ralph with the different sites just uh ha is this something that is discussed at different times uh i do not now nor will i ever feel comfortable with teachers who cannot possibly get through the curriculum they already have that we slide in something that that we think is important i mean there's so many things that don't get
dealt with now it's it's unbelievable especially history so can you just kind of check that out and let us know absolutely that's perfect all right anything else trusted carolyn that's all all right good night everybody you
