Okay. And are we live? >> Uh, not quite yet. It's uh setting it up. It's >> being a little slow. >> Okay. >> Uh, I took a look at some articles um on like um school start time. >> All right. We are >> okay. And >> uh not quite yet. setting it up. [laughter] >> I'll start. >> Being a little slow. >> All right, we're good to go. >> Okay. Uh we're going to call to order the um AMD ad hoc school start time committee at 4:08 p.m. on October 27th. And our first uh agenda Oh, do we have um Oh, no. We're going to approve the minutes. Sorry. >> Correct. I was going to move public comment first. [laughter] Okay. So, we're going to approve the minutes. Is um >> need a motion? >>

I think do we need a motion, correct? Yes. >> I'll make the motion. >> Okay. Uh all in favor? >> I >> Yes. >> Okay. And do we have anyone for public comment? >> I am not seeing anyone. >> Okay. All right. Great. So, Carol, Andrea has a hard stop at 4:30 and Tom is gonna pull up the the infographic that was um put together and we can we can go through it. >> Okay. >> And um Tom can send it to us now that we are uh called to order. >> Okay. Yep. I have just sent it and then can everybody see the infographic? >> Yes. >> Okay, great. >> See this for um the November 6th meeting? >> Yes. So, just to remind everyone this uh the target audience is the BOA superintendent

and they meet monthly and so we'll get about five minutes of their time at 12:30 on November 6th. And the goal is just to gauge interest and invite them to the conversation as we explore um potential start time adjustments. We want you want feedback on this. >> Um, >> yes. >> I think it's very collaborative. Like it's very welcoming. That that's that's kind of what we're hopeful for, right? >> Yes. Thank you. Yeah. [clears throat] Yes. I I wonder about um what do you guys think about the K through six? Do we have that in there? Because we think that they the other um superintendent won't they'll be like, "Oh, we don't have 7 to 12 grade students." Um, I'm just wondering if it can if we think that's like absolutely necessary or something we

can say just to make it sort of shorter, even shorter. >> I think it's inclusive. I think the thought was is that what like we don't want to go and strongarm anybody, right? And so I think making sure that it's inclusive and it's a conversation to start. That's just my my thought. >> Yes. >> So, just because the the audience is the K through six uh superintendants and we want everyone to understand that we want this to be um a collaborative approach. And of course, you know, their their their students will most likely not all um but enter the um AMD district at 7, >> I guess. So, when I look at the what about K through six, I'm like, okay, what's going to happen? Like, are we proposing that a time change? like it

I guess it make it I have more questions than then I feel like oh like you're bringing me under the tent. Um so um so I I was just so you guys started asking qu I'm a I'm a slow reader >> so I didn't get to that just yet. Um, let's see. >> We have maintained strong K through six systems at the top. That's part of our goal. But I guess if we're going to have like a separate like that like gray bar and like what about K6? I'm like what's our goal with that section? Um, because they're not affected by I don't know by start times. I don't know what >> Well, you know what, Carol, to your point, we could pull that out. Oops, this Kathy, one moment. Let me just um >>

Yeah. >> Um I was going to say we can pull that out and just leave it as a talking point off this piece. Let me just Where is my One moment? >> That makes sense. I see I see what you're saying, Carol. That makes sense, too. >> Yeah, I I definitely think it's we it should be part of the talking point. I just it it's distracting to me and and I'm just trying to put myself in like a you know another boro superintendent shoe and I'm like I just have more questions and then if I just thought okay our goal you already mentioned we mentioned K through six system you know so they're not like left off that's part of the goal so I that would be my suggestion I think otherwise it looks really

great >> I think Tom, just to clarify, there's only like what, six minutes that the [laughter] presentation has. >> Yeah. I I think the target time is is five to six minutes and and basically essentially talking through the infographic, letting the infographic be the flow to that five to six minutes. Um I'm taking notes uh so that we can update the infographic. Um >> Miss Schustster, what uh Dr. Deli and Andrea Hubard were talking about was if we pull it out and make it a talking point. Um we have the uh up above it already Matt uh it discusses the importance of the collaborative nature with the elementary schools but then that would give a little bit more space to the document and not be as um I don't want to put words in anyone's

mouth but um kind of visually um overstimulating I think was what I heard. >> Yes, I I I support that. I think that's actually a really a really good idea. I like that. Um the So going back up to why start times matter, it's uh the American Academy of Pediatric recommends middle school and high schools not start before 8:30 a.m. is how it's actually worded. >> Okay. Oh, not start before 8:30. >> Not start before 8:30 a.m. >> So, making the change uh just in the language >> just just be consistent with um >> Oh, exactly what they say. Okay. Yeah, I mean I think this looks I think I like the benefits having the like benefits of later start time on here and the like even a 30 minute shift makes a big difference,

>> right? >> Yeah. And let's see what the rest >> um I think we will have to um think about um I'm sure someone will ask well what does this mean for us right like like when you get down to it what what does this mean for logistics time you know everyone's busy so what are we what are we asking them to do I mean I know it says like yes join this collaborative effort but what does that mean like practically I think we'll have to answer that. >> Right. So, um I think as part of that's a good idea. So, part of the talking points I was envisioning was that we would do we would bring to our board a trans the proposal for a transportation study to look for efficiencies. um that right

now my understanding is that we have owner operated shared services and that would be the first step and just talking about that we haven't done this before you know we have a plan and we we want to look at so the first step would be uh we could look we could we would AMD would propose propose a transportation study and looking at our contracts, understanding that this is not going to be an overnight type of change that it will take time and you know part it will be looking at the they and us. That's why it's collaborative because we're partially regionalized their teacher contracts as well. I I you know I'm sorry I joined late but is is this >> are we proposing this prior to socializing with the other schools or no the other

superintendents? >> So are they >> oh so so Kathy hi um so uh I'm just going to give Kathy a quick summary because she wasn't able to make our last meeting. We have this this infographic was developed for the BOA superintendent K through six to invite them to collaborate with AMD as we explore perhaps changing the school start times that are better suited for adolescence and that we just want to have open an open conversation. So, we're actually going to take out the what about K through six and use that as a talking point and that it's to get them to see to gauge their interest. And so now we were just talking about some of the other things that they might ask part of a conversation, but we only get five to six minutes.

And so the superintendent would talk to their boards and that is how this would start. So the first part would I would envision a transportation study to look for efficiency. So we have owner operated shared services and we have teacher contracts to look at and yes there's a lot of things that we would need to consider and this will take time. >> Okay. Thank you. >> Sure. So do you have any other questions? Did I cover it? I don't think there'll be much much conversation. It's really just a quick presentation and then they have to bring it back to their boards and discuss further. >> Right. But they they might have some other questions that they anticipate their boards may have. >> Yes. >> And you and we we can we can answer what we

we can anticipate some of the questions. Those are the only ones I can anticipate right now. Um, so if anyone has any other um ideas or suggestions as to what we should anticipate for and we can always say, you know, we haven't thought of that. Thank you for letting us, you know, that that's thoughtprovoking and we can we can come back to you with more if that's something you need to take this to your boards and we can, you know, provide it with with Jen to Jen and go from there unless you have another idea. That sounds good. Do we think that we're going to um be you and I don't know if you've talked to Jen about this, but do we think that um we will sort of present we'll tell them like you

just outlined the next steps transportation study and some other things but will we um bring updates to this meeting to that meeting that whatever the November 6th meeting I presume that's like their regular meeting like at with some frequency like are we going to be able to tell them that like you know we'll come back quarterly like here are the next steps um you know um I'm all about like not giving anybody else an extra meeting to go to. So if we can like just say you know would it be okay what's our ask would it be okay for us to have like you know six minutes every quarter or something like that I don't know whatever we think is reasonable that way they don't have to make any more time in their schedule sort

of we're doing the leg work right um and you know we just want them to join the conversation and like you know give us feedback and give us five to six minutes every month or every quarter or whatever. >> I like that idea. I was I was thinking maybe Oh, tell me your thoughts on um you know I would was thinking that the next steps would be that they take it to their boards and then their boards would also um collaborate with us. So maybe it's sort of even figuring going to their board meetings, their public meetings, and having five minutes as an update if they want that >> or just so it's transparent to the community. >> What are your thoughts? Um I I I mean my suggestion for now would be that we

until the ball's like really rolling that maybe we use this space like whatever the initial like steps are is it what you know the transportation study we go and we present and then they we can ask them and we can provide something like an infographic or something something they can take back to their board. >> Okay. and like report out. Um, but it's certainly something we're going to like report on during our board meetings which are public, right? We're going to give them something a digest to take back to their boards and hopefully they're bringing it up in their meetings as well just to make sure it's like transparent and everybody's. If you don't hear it from us, maybe you hear it from the orange board or like Bethany or um but I would say

for now until we sort of get some momentum with this idea um I think just like going back to this body at this meeting if they allow us to come back um is probably the way I'd go. >> Okay. I think that um anyone else what what are your thoughts Andrea and Kathy? I think that I think that's right. I think until we have more detail, I think that um you know we can socialize it with the supers and let them whatever updates we have take it to the board, but going directly to their membership I think we don't have enough meat. >> No, no. I just want to make sure that um you know it's however they want to pro proceed. I'm I'm fine with saying, okay, as we're exploring every quarter, um if

you would like, we can provide you with an infographic, a short update that you can take to your boards. Uh Tom, um you have any experience with this? >> Yeah. So, so I think especially for this first meeting, I think it's also important that we're trying to gauge their level of interest in this as well, >> right? um you know for that collaborative process to see where they foresee um support or andor concerns from the from the elementary end. Um, so I think you know the the sharing of information and the listening, you know, if if they have anything to share within that meeting to, you know, hopefully then get feedback from them andor their boards regarding their level of support for this uh within their individual elementary districts is going to be just as

key to this whole process. >> Right. So, I guess um >> I I I think we really, you know, it seems like we we uh if the infographic's in a good spot, we aim to, you know, share it on November 6th and continue doing some of our work while we wait to hear, I guess, back for lack of a better word about where the elementarymentaries um where the where the elementarymentaries are in this. Well, uh, are you suggesting that maybe the next like their next meeting that Jen has that she uh ask, you know, I guess get feedback and see where they where they are. >> Yeah. I don't want to suggest anything uh officially for Dr. buyers. But I think I'm sure after after uh you know the information shared with them, I'm sure

in some formal way they're going to provide feedback back to her whether that's a BOA superintendent to their board meeting and and I think that information will be important for this group uh as the work continues, >> right? And we can ask Jen um you know how would they like to give us feedback? Do they want to go through Jen or should we come back? >> I think that's a great question. >> Right. let them decide the the vehicle that makes the most sense for them. >> Yeah. >> And Donna, I I just thought of something. Um, you know, for communications, we were talking about like um you know, doing those like I don't know, yearly like um updates for PTSOs. this could be something that like we share um with those bodies too just

in the spirit of like transparency and to let everybody know that like this is a thing we're exploring. Um so >> yes I yes I did share it with one of the PTSO members for Bethany over the weekend. >> Oh >> it was the color run and so we were there. Oh, >> shout out to the color. [laughter] >> So, yes. So, yeah, and um you know, some of the feedback was um you know, how early it is and how dark it is in the morning >> to come. and I said, "Well, that would be one of one of the one of the things we would be exploring would be taking to our board um a proposal for a transportation study and and look at that. So, it would definitely be um a a collaborative

effort as it you know as it affects our entire community any changes that would be made um at the AMD level Yeah. Um, just I'm just gonna flag it's 4:29. I know Andrea has a part at 4:30. >> Okay. Well, we we have Well, Kathy's here. So, Andrea Okay. >> Um, just we we can keep going for a few more minutes. I don't know if we have much more to to talk about. Andrea, do you have anything else? >> No, I was just going to say, you know, to Tom's point, we really can't do much until we have um feedback from the other districts. So, I think it looks great. >> Thank you. All right. Yeah. Thank you, Andrea. >> Thank you. >> All right. Okay. So, Andrea needs to pop off, but we still

have a quorum. >> You do? >> Yes. So, we're good to go. So, all right. So, what's the next steps? We're going to take out the we have so Tom you just want to run through a couple changes. >> So So the two changes we have are uh where it says what about K6 removing from that gray bar down to the next yellow bar. Removing that and then making the language change on the second bullet to read the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends not to start before 8:30 a.m. >> Yes. Do you think adding um feedback on the bottom like an inviting inviting feedback um next steps feedback something like that or no? >> I'm just seeing what's uh currently there. >> Uh well it says join join the conversation. >> Join the conversation. Let's

>> go and I guess the next part would be um >> feedback. >> Yeah, we encourage your feedback something along >> right. So would we want So I guess we just leave we can just leave that open-ended and if Jen feels that maybe it's just emailing questions and coming back if if their boards have more more questions. So we'll we can just feel that out during the meeting. But just I guess adding a feedback. >> Sure thing. I can I'll I'll work with Dr. Buyers on that. >> Thank you. says, "Carol and Kathy, are you comfortable with that?" >> Yeah. >> Oh, yeah. >> Okay, great. >> Yeah. >> All right. >> Um, >> so I'll stop the share. >> Perfect. Just All right. I like it. I I feel I feel this is this

looks really good. >> Yeah, it does. >> Yeah. Thank you for putting that together. Yeah. Uh, so then you have everyone has November 6 for the date of the BOA superintendent meeting. >> Can you tell me what time it is? >> Um, I will have to um >> it's it's 12:30, I believe. >> 12:30. Okay. >> Yeah. 12:30 on November 6th and I believe it's in orange. >> Correct. >> 12:30. Okay. >> Yes. You can just let >> orange middle the middle school I believe it it is that the same as >> I'll have Dr. Buyers clarify the >> I'll I'll have it 12:30 >> at 12:30 on November 6. So whoever just let us know who can make it. >> Okay. And then uh the last thing on the agenda is a call for

adjournment if you've covered all. >> That's right. >> Okay. So if no one objects, we will adjourn uh the ad hoc start time committee meeting at oh dog. Sorry [laughter] 4:32. >> Perfect. We are officially joined adjourned at 4:32. Thank you everybody.
