Mr. Superintendent Uh yes, we have as members of Cape or what is that Um Cape, every year Cape has a process recognize um upcoming leadership uh at the middle school level and high school level. Once those students like did or those Uh Cape Cape then honors them. Certificate from them for their accomplishment um through this board as members. But I would like to call up first Lilly? Thus our middle school winners for the Oh yeah. All
right. All right, thank you very much. Um I'd like to invite Lillian and Jack up. What up, guys? These are our two SIS award recipi- recipients. Um I'll start with Lillian. We're going to face the crowd over here. I don't know which way to face. It's kind of weird. Um Uh Lillian is a shining example of the Shelton Public Schools, consistently demonstrating leadership, respect, and responsibility in all aspects of the school community life. As president of our student council, Lillian leads with integrity, serving as a voice for her peers, fostering a positive and inclusive school culture. A dedicated and high-achieving student, Lillian has been a recipient of our Viking Honors Award, which is a uh award that it recognizes students that receive four marking periods of uh high honors um all four marking periods her
talents extend beyond the classroom as she's a lead in the spring musical which showcases her confidence, creativity, and commitment. Lillian is also deeply involved in athletics both as an avid basketball player and as a member of the Shelton cheering squad which probably won nationals this past year. Outside of school she has devoted numerous hours to community service reflecting on her strong sense of empathy and civic responsibility. Lillian Lillian truly embodies our vision of the graduate through her leadership, character, and dedication making a lasting impact on SIS and the Shelton community. Congratulations, LILLIAN. ALL RIGHT. JACK IS AN OUTSTANDING MEMBER OF OUR school community who consistently exemplifies our school values of respect and responsibility. As a dedicated member of the student council he demonstrates strong leadership and a genuine commitment to the SIS a positive inclusive

Also a high achieving student Jack was recognized as the seventh grade student of the year for our gold team as a proud recipient of our student SIS Viking honors award as well. He's also an active member of the SIS baseball team where he models teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship. Sportsmanship. Beyond the classroom Jack continues to make meaningful impact. Jack is a true role model among his peers embodies the vision of the graduate and we're proud to recognize him for his many accomplishments and contributions both in and outside of our school. Congratulations, JACK. NOW I'LL INVITE PRINCIPAL RIDDLE FOR OUR HIGH school
students. Christian. Good evening, everyone. Christian and Maria, you want to come up with me? Um so, I want to start out first that um each school year you reflect back and you have some very special moments as you reflect on the year. And Maria is um my one of my special moments because I was walking down the hallway one day and I overheard someone crying, which is typical in a high school. And um I go into the career center wondering what's wrong and I soon realize it's tears of joy. And Maria was on the phone with her father sharing the wonderful news that she got a full ride TO HARVARD UNIVERSITY. AND I HAVE TO SAY THAT WAS ONE REAL happy dad that night. Uh Maria is so actively involved in our school community. She
is co-president of our Future Business Leaders of America. She is very dedicated to her church as a community member and serves as an altar server. She manages our track and field team and she also started her own club at the high school, which we always love because we want our school to be generated by our students and our student leaders. And she started a club called Sending Sunshine. And the original intent was for them to um write cards to the elderly in nursing homes and things like that, but they've extended out and I know even last year for teacher appreciation week uh I got a card and they do some wonderful things around our school just to brighten up our day. Um her teachers describe her as personable, hardworking, kind, and has a passion for
learning. As I mentioned, she'll continue her studies at Harvard University and she where she's going to study economics and government. She's on a pre-law track. So, CONGRATULATIONS TO MARIA NUñEZ. SO, KRISHIV PATEL MAKES ME feel old because I've known him since he was a young lad in our Lego League and I got to go away with his wonderful family to Detroit for the World Championships. So, it's very special to give this to you tonight. Um he is currently ranked number one in his graduating class. He is our BOYS THAT'S AMAZING. HE IS CAPTAIN OF OUR boys tennis team. He is the lead programmer and captain of our Gail Hawks robotics team. He's also the other co-president of our Future Business Leaders of America. Um he does some really cool things outside of Shelton High School.
He tutors students in STEM classes in India and is very dedicated to to extending his knowledge um to other students in other countries. Um he also started his and launched his own company uh and it's called Technology Literacy Institute. And this is where he works with the elderly. Um he not only teaches them a lot about technology and how to use things, but also it's more educational in the sense of um what is a scam and how to avoid being scammed on the internet and things like that. So, I know as as someone who had elderly parents uh you know, I certainly appreciate that so they can uh you know, avoid fraud and other things. Um his teachers describe Krishiv as a leader, role model, exceptionally intellectual, and certainly caring. Um next year he's going
to study applied math at Yale University. Wow. So, CONGRATULATIONS TO KRISHIV. OKAY. I HAVE A POTENTIAL CUSTOMER. UH YOU LIKE THAT? UH I MIGHT WANT TO GET ON THAT LIST, TOO. Jason just fell out. >> Yeah, it's all right. I don't miss a beat. All right. I'm just saying. Do I do teacher of the year finalists? >> Yeah. Uh next item on the agenda, uh Dr. Serino, teacher of the year finalists. Okay. So, um as everyone knows, for the year, annually, through the process that's done through the state of Connecticut, um teacher of the year is nominated by their colleagues, and then led by a teacher-led committee. It's a very uh challenging process, shall I say, um as they go through the different events for teacher of the year. Um the teacher of the year
committee, and I commend them for the hard work that they've done year after year, uh this year had a really challenge to go through all the finalists and candidates that were nominated, um but they have determined the finalists. So, we are down to our final three, um in terms of who will be the 2027 teacher of the year. Um they all happen to be here tonight, so I'd ask them to they can come up here to be recognized, uh since they're with us tonight, um, first is Donna Santapant from SUNNY SIDE SCHOOL. UH, NEXT TRACY SEDLAK FROM PERRY HILL SCHOOL. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, MAUREEN SMITH, SAS. I WANT TO CONGRATULATE THESE THREE individuals for their hard work and dedication to the Shelton Public School System. Very well deserved in their honor as being
finalists to represent our teachers, um, in this district. And by this time next month, next board meeting, Carrie Fredricks, if I'm correct, one of you will be named our next Teacher of the Year. Is that right? Good timeline? What was that? It'll be the end of the end of the month, right? We'll know. We'll know by then. It is. So, so. Thank you. Tracy, YOU CAN STAY. NOW, I KNOW UNFAIR ADVANTAGE. This has nothing to do with the Teacher of the Year process, but this just talks about the quality of our teachers in our school system. Um, our last recognition tonight is to Tracy. Tracy was selected, um, by a committee, um, is recognized as our Weller Award winner for the elementary school. And this is a great honor we bestow on EVERYONE EACH YEAR.
AND I HAVE YOUR PRIZE FROM THE WELLER FOUNDATION. SO, CONGRATULATIONS. >> MR. CHAIRMAN, and that's all our presentations and recognitions for this evening. Very good. Thank you, sir. Our student board rep. Uh hello everybody. Um unfortunately, Steph, my I don't know what I would call her, co-board member, couldn't make it tonight, so I'll be telling you everything that's going on in school. Thank you. Um they had High School Musical, went great. Blanked there for a second, but we also had our World Language Week week last week. Um our some of our Italian students actually went to Southern
Italy. Yeah. Um it was a good time. We have mock car crash coming up on May 1st. That's for our juniors and seniors, learning about obviously safety in the car. Um our junior and senior prom is coming up May 2nd. Um our juniors are taking the Next Generation Science Standard tomorrow um in the morning. Uh AP testing is coming up for all of our students within the next two to three weeks. Um we had our Scroll Induction Ceremony for our journalism students last week. Um we also have our spring sports that have just kicked off. We have uh baseball, track, tennis, softball, all those sports that that are going great. Um later in the month, we will have our bocce tournament. And then finally, we have college commitments coming up May 1st. Obviously, you heard
some of our good acceptances in the presentations that we just had, but there are many more good ones, so yeah, that's all I have for you. Thank you. Thank you. Any questions for our student rep? Seeing none. Next item is the approval of the healthy foods certificate statement. Did you get anything? Uh all I'll say is this is required um by state statute uh annually at this time this year that the board approves um this particular statement that needs read into minutes um that we will adhere to this safe food mission guidelines are by the witch is FWS um and that makes this I'll provide without proving this on an annual basis we would forfeit our ability I'll entertain a motion. No, ma'am. This is it's put on the public record. I'll move to I'll
move by Ms. Kutash. Is there a second? I'll second it. Seconded. Is there a motion again? Any discussion? All those in favor state by saying aye. Aye. Any being opposed? Motion carries. Uh next item is public comment. Kaylee, anybody signed up? I'll ask one time, is there anybody else would like to address the board? Kaylee, in the future too, let's put public comment uh before the uh consent agenda. Just in case somebody wants to speak to any of the items cuz we have past some level business just in case I wouldn't want them to say I did it they didn't get a chance to address us. Seeing none, I'll move right on to standing committees. Uh T&L, please. Uh teaching and learning did not meet this month. We will meet next on June 2nd. We
will compare year-end testing scores with meeting at Very good. Thank you, ma'am. Any questions for T&L? Finance. We also did not meet uh today um and doesn't sound like we're going to meet next week either. So the next meeting will be at the end of May. Very good. Any questions for finance? Policy. We met a few weeks ago. There's a policy for transportation on the agenda to be um be reviewed or just as simple language brain some of the transportation services language back into uh back into order with it. Then um we'll have a big meeting in June after the teaching and learning committee to review um review more bylaws. During that During that Very good. Uh this transportation 5134, you need to move that so it sits on the Yeah, make a motion to
move it onto the consent agenda for the next month's meeting. Second. Motion made, seconded. Any discussion? All those in favor signify by saying I. I. Any being opposed? Motion carries. B&G? Uh B&G didn't meet this month. We'll We'll meet our next meeting is May 20th. We had a couple of things going on over April break. Mr. Calhoun lights lights in Carey Hill lobby. That was quite the project when you had a big lift 40 ft to get up there into the lobby. So those are Um as you guys can see here we removed the stone here in central office. Waiting some topsoil and work and working reseeding of that area to turn that into lawn and more main more maintainable area. Um Two uh two out of the five bidders came back with their bids
came in on April 7th for the scoreboard. Met with the mayor last Monday and tomorrow I have a call with one of our uh one of our city employees to figure out the plan of attack to move forward. Also with us Turf project on where that's headed. Um yeah, again and that's all I have, but May 20th is our next meeting. So if anyone has anything that you'd like to put on the agenda, let me know. Any questions for B&G, chair? I have one on the work that we're doing outside. How is that being uh uh paid for? Well, the the work that we put in was uh sweat equity. Us uh we're removing the stones. Topsoil. The work will be on between 10 and the city highway. Thank you. I just want to make
sure we got that on record. Yeah, no, for sure. But there was no charging. Huh. Thank you for the doing that work. Good. Thank you, Jim. Athletics? Uh we also did not have a meeting have on the right. Along with building grounds. But I would like to announce tonight the boys volleyball team had a huge win against Conrad. Now Conrad is one that they were in the semi-finals and they lost them last year. So this shows a lot of promise for for them. Volleyball. And no. Thank you, sir. Questions for uh anybody for athletics? CES? Yes, Mr. Chair. The CES Representative Council last met on Thursday, April 3rd. Director Chip DuMay reported that the RESC directors have continued to meet with state legislators and key committee members and will continue to do so throughout the
legislative session to work with legislators to monitor legislation affecting RESCs, school districts, and provide testimony and feedback on key issues. The CES team is working to develop a responsible budget for next year that best supports the districts and the students they serve. Associate Executive Director Chris LaBelle reported they're in the process of recruiting and hiring staff at the extended year program for this summer. All positions are currently posted. Director of Finance and Operations Peggy Sullivan reported that the sale of the workspace property in Bethel is complete with CES receiving 1,323,823 dollars from the sale. The initial investment was 892,000 dollars. Medical insurance premium increase is 18% for medical and 0% on dental. They are working with the broker to get down the medical um increase. Peggy Sullivan, previously mentioned Director of Finance and Operations, announced
her intention to retire as of June 30th. Suzanne Clement, Early Childhood Coordinator, reported that New Beginnings Family Academy Charter School has contracted with CES to consult on the launch of a new Early Childhood building that will include three new classrooms in the fall. The cost for Regional Center for the Arts, this is good news for us, will remain the same next year, a significantly lower tuition than charged by other Connecticut Arts Magnet Programs. RCA will be fully enrolled in the fall with a waitlist of 110. The portal for the Open Choice Program has closed with 726 applicants from Bridgeport, 45 from Danbury, and 195 from Norwalk, which represents a significant increase in Norwalk. There were only 24 placements in suburban schools this school year. The Six to Six Magnet School had a seventh grade student
who was invited to the Atomic Math Conference where he was a co-presenter with one of their math interventionist, Dr. Sheryl Carison. Luke Foreshaw, Professional Development, reported they received an open choice grant from the state to work with leadership from Trumbull and Fairfield Public Schools to strengthen the open choice experience for staff, students, and families. And the collaboration between Stamford Public Schools and CES is reaching the end of its first year for classes of preschool students on the spectrum. Currently, there are 31 students in six classrooms. Year two planning is to expand two more classrooms for another 10 to 12 students along with necessary staff. The next meeting is the first Thursday in May and there um gala raising funds for the CES Foundation is May 1st. Thank you. Any questions for CES? What? Babe, please.
Yeah. Okay. Um the legislature's session ends in its session May 7th, I believe. And K will have a legislative wrap-up as to what bills were were not passed and this and the implications of what those bills would be on our school districts. Um this will take place at May 12th 9:00 a.m. at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford. And topics to be to be discussed is education funding, special ed, school meals, education mandates, cell phones, and more. And the fee for this is dollars. Any questions for K? >> Just one comment. As of the 6:00 news, they were very close to a um a a agreement between the two parties on 170 million in funding for education. So, they were very close. We'll see what happens. Be happy. Yeah. We all would. Superintendent. Thank you,
Mr. Chair. Uh so, as everyone is aware, the city uh continues its budget process. Uh I did have a conversation with President Anglace today uh and asked him he provided me with the budget workshops for the Board of Aldermen. I gave a copy to all the board members this evening. I'll be sharing this budget workshop schedule um with the community through our principals um in a communication I'll send out later this week. Um some noteworthy dates is the public hearing portion in which the public can express um their their opinions on on the budget, the city budget, will be Tuesday, May 12th, 7:00 p.m. at City Hall. And also the final day is Thursday, May 21st is when the Board of Aldermen will have the meeting to adopt the budget and set the mill rate,
and that's when we'll we'll have the final determination on any changes to the mayor's proposed budget at that time. The other workshops, just to remind people, are open to the public, but there is no public comment. So, but you're welcome to um be a part of those meetings and watch the deliberation that happens with the Board of Aldermen. And as I said, those dates were provided to the board, and I will be providing those all those dates um to the public uh this week. Um One Book, One Community is well underway. We're very excited about what's happening in all of our schools. Um as we said, this is a first-time endeavor for Shelton Public Schools, and it's going extremely well. I want to thank some of our big partners who over the spring break last
week did some major events. Of course, um the public library at both library settings had some major fun events for our for our families and students centered around the book. Um Adult Ed uh at the Baldwin Center, they have been reading the book with their um English language learners, enjoying it, and they have created a whole wish tree in their lobby in which they're writing their wishes, um as well as the Senior center, which we gave provided some copies of the senior center. Um they are actively involved in asking uh they're doing it in their book club and asking for opportunities where they can read to some of our kids and be a part of the discussion. So, it's really truly a one book, one community book, and we're very excited about that. Um we're
posting a lot of pictures up through social media. Um we will share a recap after the end of the month when the book culminates of some of these events, but I think it's it's well it's being done very well, and we even sent a copy over to Italy as our uh SHS Italian club went to Italy last week during spring break, and I saw it through a social media post that uh we provided a one book, one community copy to what was it? The tour guide? Yeah, the tour guide. So, we're going international with this. It's now one one book, one world. So, um I do want to point out uh the new decorations in our board room as some board members have noticed. Um that is actually a capstone project Wow. that has been
created and to be hung here. Um for those who can't recognize or didn't notice at first, um the capstone project is centered on all the school mascots. So, all eight mascots from our school are depicted in this mural, um which is now here hung in our board, um compliments of Shelton High School senior Colton Help me with the last name, Mrs. Riddle. Colton De Lucas. So, thank you, Colton, for our new uh decoration here in the board room. Um as as it was stated earlier by our student rep, um district-wide state testing is underway uh in in all of our schools. Um I'm very proud of the performance of our students and staff and look forward to those testing results, cuz I'm sure we will do well. Um I want to acknowledge um the Mohegan
staff and students for their their efforts today. We had a very um unique unfortunate situation where there was a power outage in that section of town, the Mohegan section of town early this morning. We lost power for it for a brief time for about a 90-minute period. During that time, we sent all of our Mohegan students and staff to Shelton High School, and thank you Shelton High School for hosting them for a brief period of time. I think the students had a nice field trip to the high school that day. Thanks to Shelton Student Transportation for all of their being on the spot involvement in getting the students back and forth, but and especially, you know, Principal John Coppola for his leadership in making this uh very impromptu field trip a necessary um for today.
And everyone went back and forth between schools without any problem, and it was a fun day overall despite the slight loss of instructional time. So, but we'll make that up. Um Today, as you'll see many staff members and and myself with my purple tie, um Governor Lamont asked educators today to wear purple to help recognize um student students of military children. So, in honor for um what all those students have to go through for the for their parents who serve our country, um and we all know the dedication that those individuals have towards um protecting our country, and then the hardships that it does put on those families sometimes when their family members are away on different assignments, and you know, obviously the displacement that they have when their parents get transferred to different locations.
But, to help support those students in solidary, uh Governor Lamont asked educators to wear purple to show acceptance. So, thank you to all the staff members who participated in wearing purple. Um April is also autism awareness month, um and I know schools have been recognized that, but I always take this as an opportunity of a proud parent of an autistic student to remind everyone to be kind, as kindness goes a really long way. Uh and the last thing that I want to do, as I would as I love to say this, and I know it embarrasses her, it is Administrative Assistants Day. So, I want to thank all the administrative assistants for their work, but especially Katie. FOR FOR HER WORK THAT SHE DOES FOR this board. Thank you. That's all I have to say.
Mr. Chair. Okay. Questions for the superintendent. Actually, but I have a question for the super. State Rep McCarty >> I don't know how to question. That she texted this morning. Yes, you can use your cell phone. Question. While you do that, so the Italy trip, why wasn't the board invited? Yeah. Speak to Principal Riddle on that one. Cuz they wanted to >> How's that dog house? Yeah. And by the way, and of course we paid for that trip, correct? Through the through the funding? That trip is funded by the individuals who attend the trip. I'm being facetious. I'm being facetious at this tough time that we're all going through. That's all. For the record. I'm just curious. Ma'am. About the um move to Mohegan. Is there something state mandated stated or something that says we
had to do that? Cuz I can remember sitting in the dark in my teaching career for a couple hours at a time. Well, you can't be in a building without water or electricity. Um and so then for a second One person at a time. the timing that it took place, our students were already on the buses, and by statute, once the students set foot on a bus, they are responsibility. Um and knowing that the neighborhood was completely out of power, I mean, I live in the Mohegan area, I was out of power. I know Ms. Santillo is in the Mohegan area, she was out of power cuz we just had to talk to her this morning. Um the decision to send students back home to a house that has no power or parents who may
not be home. They were not already at school when they No, no. So, we we we we went to action and immediately had them not disembark buses and send buses right to the high school so that they would be safe. >> sense. I can remember somebody bringing me a flashlight at one point because I'll speak to it, too, when it's my turn. Are you ready to go, sir? The question The question I hope it's not a hard one. Well, The question The question was why was uh the community service 10 hours for uh for the freshman removed? I guess it was It was supposed to be 4 years of community service, and then the the question was uh I guess freshman stone don't have to provide 10 hours of community service. I know there that,
but I I Sure. I mean, cuz I don't I Oh, yeah. Correct. Got it. Thank you. I And And And yes, and I was aware of that. I did Thank you for reminding me. I just on the spot question in that sense. Yes, we just found it's more effective instead of And a lot of these organizations that want the help, it's difficult sometimes, "Well, only 10 hours, you know, in this kind of so it" or they, you know, opportunities for students to work longer duration. So, they still have the overall requirement for graduation. It's just not segmented year by year. As long as it's it's done before graduation. >> Yep. Got it. Makes sense. Thanks a lot. Yep. Thank you. Thanks for the reminder. Does the chair have to direct you to text her back
so she doesn't I will I I will do that. Very good. Uh anybody else have questions for the superintendent? Seeing that, chair does have uh one further question for you. Uh Long Hill uh was in the paper regards to a food problem with meat uh being improperly stored. It was addressed right away. Do you know anything about that? Can you speak to that? I I I do know about it. It's not an issue for this board. It's actually Witsons, you know, and when the health inspector goes and they have to work with food services, there was a concern that was expressed by health health inspector and it was addressed immediately upon the situation. It had no effect of students, nothing irregular was served or provided to students whatsoever. It was just found in a routine
health inspection and was addressed immediately. I always like to bring things to like that to the public light cuz when you first saw the article, it it it it lured you in to look at it and start reading like there was some major deficiency. >> definitely clickbait and the reason, you know, it is it's clickbait and the reason why we we didn't necessarily need to make an issue cuz at no time did staff or students ever get affected by this issue. So, we were it would be reporting on a non-issue if we were to report on it at the time. It's they make they make them throw it out anyway. Yep. Actually good. It's definitely in your wheelhouse. Actually. Love my old. Just looking at second time at the baseball. Anybody questions for superintendent? I
know that Jackie's not here. Any health care update? I do not have a health care update. I mean, we were on spring break last week for us to kind of put those reports together and and then Mrs. Toolings is not here this evening, so I can't speak to it. But, we we can provide that information to the board via email if necessary. Who's two? Yep. Comments by the board chair. To the general public, the first thing most importantly is the budget. Want to make sure that please to our union representatives and union members as well as the public, the most important. Please come here your have your voices come for or against. Hopefully for, but make sure you get out there and have your voices heard. It's your government, it's your school system and it
you need to say what you feel. Uh Anthony, how's your nephew doing? Beyonce's okay, too? Wanted to check. Uh another item uh I had the privilege of attending uh the first SEPTA introduction meeting to parents at the uh library um excuse me uh Shelton uh Community Center. Um wonderful time, met a lot of good parents, a lot of interesting information. Um I invite the other members of the board to reach out and begin to understand what they're trying to accomplish. I think it's going to be a great addition to our our PTOs. That's for sure. Uh the last thing I I want to make sure I point out uh for the superintendent. Uh I did appreciate just so everyone knows, the superintendent contacted me right away with the Mohegan item this morning. We discussed it
very quickly. I was very happy uh with your prep your plan uh as well as Mohegan. Thank you. And the high school as well. Um I did just so the board knows, I did authorize if they needed to do anything. It solved itself quickly, but authorized on behalf of the board if we needed to buy pizza or anything for the children. Anything we needed to do. Uh number one, the biggest item was safety. And our staff and our school system, you know, these are little ones. They need to be protected at all times. But it worked out very well. And again, your staff did a fantastic job. A situation like this sometimes could just turn sideways. And it did not. It went flawless, and I didn't I didn't get one complaint. But I do appreciate
the efforts cuz uh you were a little frantic on the phone today. You were running around >> Just busy. Just busy. Not frantic. Just busy. We appreciate it. I wanted to make sure I recognized everybody. Any celebrations? I I just want to comment. It's already been mentioned about the Italy trip a couple of times, but kudos to Mrs. Riddle with all the social media sharing so the parents could watch what their kids were doing. And so many pictures and they may not have come home well rested but they came home very well fed. They had some good meals. I'm going to take objection to that Miss Riddles in the doghouse if you didn't hear earlier cuz she didn't INVITE US. WE BETTER GET AN EMAIL WAY IN ADVANCE. Very good. Communications to the board? None?
Enrollment and staffing is included in the package. Don't anyone have any comments or make action on that?
