I'd like to call to order the athletic 80 adop board of education shelter Connecticut 382 Longill Avenue room Wednesday February 18th approximately p.m. Haley, can we have a roll call? >> Anthony Smearino here. >> Jason N here. >> Rich O' Conor is absent. Also in attendance, Dr. Ken Serinich and Kate Coutach. >> Okay, stand for the pledge of allegiance. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. Republic stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty. Second, I'll make a a motion to approve the agenda. Second it. Um the agenda items first discussion of um looking at the slide here May 28th 25 policy set in place um I must say this working with ad principles has been a real pleasure and I think you know things along I not them too

but people think that the board of education here to help care really do care want to keep that going with both and principal excit discussion of equipment needed Well, can I can I add to that? I'm sorry. Yeah. So, I just want to firm up like the responsibilities uh you know, who's responsible for the booster clubs? Is it the coach or is it the AD? Is is it Mrs. Riddle the principal? If anyone has any questions, who does that who does that who do they go to? Um I Yeah, I I I also think um the um and I I'm speaking for Anthony here. the committee would like to organize like a Q&A with um booster clubs every preeason just you know because obviously we know they turn sometimes they they're there for four years

or three years but I think we should just have a a quick Q&A just to say you know answer any questions they might have or and just let them know how important a booster club and what the responsibilities of a booster club may be um because kids really need it. Um so that's uh that's the main concern or that's why we >> Okay. Next is discussion on equipment needed for repair and replacement. and myself and Jason uh athletic director has want him to do those budget money for one of these. So, Paul Roland, I I hope we can over things. >> Yeah, I think that uh as we as we know, everything gets older, everything's, you know, some things are out of storage, some things are outside. So, what what I recommend and maybe you

know I know it might be a lot to chew, but if we can have every coach um when they have time create a list of current current equipment in and the condition of that equipment so we can kind of forecast what we have, you know, what we have for inventory one and what we need to look forward to to replacing two year, three or immediately. Um, I think we need to grasp what we have, you know, just so we obviously know what we have. Um, so I think that that's a big part of things. Um, uh, you know, with the tracks, track equipment and you know yourself. Um, the goals, soccer goals, what can be repaired versus what can be, uh, you know, we don't we don't want things to be let go when it

could be a simple repair and then it has to be a total um, uh, you know, you know, total buy um, replacement rather. So yeah, that's that's that's what uh that's what we wanted to bring forth on that. And I think like I said, a list of um you know, if we could do a master list on things, maybe number of goals, maybe number, you know, this way we can, you know, either set up a you know, we can take a field trip and just run through it. We can have kids uh you know, we can delegate kids uh to to do that. But I think things need to be um kind of numbered and just a little more organized. And it's very important and also allies come here don't want to post example that's

an embarrassment I mean so some things may have a sense of urgency. Okay. new freshman frosty I could say is wonderful. I like to You mention equipment. Oh, >> yes. Right. So, so we're we we we're going to have one coach for boys and one coach for right at the freshman. Okay. >> Well, this is good cuz I think Ross where I I think in early 20 right four or five something. This is this is a this is a good big jump here and it's uh about time that we that we lacrosse is a very it's growing sport. A lot of kids are playing it. That's good. Get some kids early on. >> Yes. Very fast game. >> Yeah. A um track for play funding too. >> Yeah. Sure. >> Scouting. Yeah, >> logistics on

the field is >> you'll figure it out. J, >> could you just tell them um about the expense of of the >> Oh, yeah. Um Yeah, Mr. uh Yeah, now it knows it as well. Yeah. Yeah. So yeah, the um do you want to >> obvious Awesome. There it is. I'll wait. That's not Thank you. >> Well, I I believe with this with the freezing thaw this year and the amount of snow that we have out there lingering be a lot worse come spring. Um I know I know Bill ordered some material patch in the air areas keep the water from penetrating the lower layer. Um but yeah, we on our radar on an over. >> So and and and we're concerned with this. >> Yeah. Yeah. Mo most likely. No, I know we don't

have money, but but if we've got to get it done soon, >> it's a petty property. >> Well, that's okay. So, now we're going to talk a little bit about the concession. >> Okay. There's a potential there to make a lot of money for there. You know, people say, "Well, this and the food like the role is crazy." So, how how much variety? So, we're going to be proposing couple refrigerators that nature that mark one free. They have their own freedom. Likewise early I have to plug this now the variety was I thought there's a lot of option that could lies in other so that being said we maybe somebody else like to take it over but for not going to father's group. Okay, that's it. I mean they were very generous scholarship and so

other segment sports over may not be much have to win situation on myself Jason that's yeah going back to Harrison will come there and he's boiled hot dogs one other that's it really is and as I said got a little bit of whoever takes it over I'd be happy help not help but give give advice what you um Jason and I will go home benefit. >> Yeah. I I think like like you said, I think part of it is the storage and in the in the sharing part of it, right? Um for all the fall fall sports and you know, all all the sports for that matter. >> Um you know, I don't want to downplay what the Father's Club has done. They've they've done a lot. Um you know, and volunteering is is is

a big issue nowadays. um you know from the lack of of storage uh you know she the father club the father's club brings what they think they're going to sell um so they don't have to store it or uh you know over buy or un you know so they they you know they they they sell they sell out once you know once they're done obviously due to the storage the lack of storage um so but you know we feel like there's a lot more potential we feel like there's a lot more uh yeah basically a lot more potential. I mean, with with the new uh area that we've have done to we upfitted it. Um there's a there's some friars. There's uh you know, the the condition of the of the of the concession stand

is um is is in a good state to make some uh revenue. You know, if you look at GoFund the uh the uh GoFan, I mean, you're talking, you know, one Friday night game is there's 1,600 people, right? And we can all do the math. Um, so if if we can if we can, you know, we can generate some money, it it would help again for, you know, lacrosse uniforms or um, you know, all all types of sports uh, equipment that that we know have to be placed every every so often. So again, we're just, you know, again, we don't want to, you know, we don't want to downplay what the Father's Club does has done. They they've they've donated many, many scholarships. Um, and we also we want to we want to partner up

with Father's Club, but we help we believe that we can can help them. So, we're going to start with the equipment share. We're going to start with the we're going to start with the layout. Um, we we did have a uh we did have a meeting. Anthony and I had a meeting with the mayor. We told him what we're what we're planning on doing and he said, "Whatever you guys need, we'll we'll make it happen." Oh, I just I have a we had discussed did did anyone see about Gracie Field and the concession stand there since the youth football is no longer using that field? If there's refrigerator units or anything that can come out of there. >> Okay. >> There I can I can speak on that that there there is a concession stand

there. Uh I'm sorry. There is a couple refrigerators there. The only thing is they use that during practice. they open up a small concession concession stand during practice just to grab the parents um you know so um but if there is one there we'll we'll take we'll take a look >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Yeah. And and Scott we we'll need your help to you know get this off the ground. Um, so we're, you know, again, Anthony and I are always, you call us. We're a phone call away. Um, but we'll need you, you know, we'll need you on the boots on the ground to get this going. There >> there was a lot of discussion and push for that fry with the remodeling. >> I think it's sad that it's not being >> I I

I agree. But again, like I said, the volunteering >> Oh, I understand. >> So, I think that we can I think we I think we have a good plan um this year. I just want to make sure it continues that way. Right. >> I don't want to I don't want to remove anyone and not have a >> maybe >> we have to we have to get in good kind of in good practice right with these >> maybe each group as they come in needs someone like trained on the fry later that can you know if they're going to be a regular concession person for that group for that year. Not that everybody can make it every week but >> I welcome >> Yeah. cuz that can be daunting I'm sure if you've never done it.

And that can be daunting if you've never done it. >> Actually, Kate, I I' I've worked it a couple times. A lot of times, actually, very well cuz my son just graduated from youth. >> Very. It's simple. >> Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I I it's it's, you know, very quick to train. Long as long as you don't leave them in there too long and and burn them. That's worry about golden brown is the ticket. That's it. Have a plan. That's it. Helping you. >> Okay. As far as the scoreboard goes, you weren't here. Turn it to Jason. Wanted to tell you that the green light we've been talking about is let's hope it is. I mean, you know, we were discussing it during the rounds meeting. Um, it's there there is a uh a bid

out there or a forget exactly what it's out it's out to bid. Um, you know what what we've decided to do is two two score a time clock on the bottom with the scoreboard on the bottom screen 4 and a half by uh upper board 9 and a half that would allow us fun obviously games I'm clocking this all fours and advertising above that at 9 and a half by two, right? So you have play advertising. So I believe like Kanan for instance, they go out and they solicit sponsors as a whole. It's not going to just go to football. It's not going to this is the way I believe uh you know it go to the sports general fund, right? and we and we we sell this advertisement. I think I think if we

do this right, we can we can generate a lot of money for the sports side of it in school or whatever it is. Um again, uh we would do the time clocks as well for the field. That's that's in the bid package. Um and mostly like I said, the advertising is the biggest thing, right? Especially the way our way our town has grown. Look at look at Bridgeport Avenue. There's national companies out there, you know, when I was a kid, there was Black Forest, you know, Walmart wasn't even there, you know. So, we So, we changed we changed and we should utilize um utilize what we have. >> I moved. >> There you go. You know, so so I but but I I want to I wanted I wanted to touch base I wanted to

touch on the fundraising part of it for these sponsorships. There is a company like like this town of Monroe has a company who they they went out and hired to solicit sponsors and they take a percentage of it >> to pay for the scoreboard. >> Well, to pay for it and to generate more funds like they have a gold sponsor, right? And I don't I don't remember, don't quote me on this, but I I you know, it's somewhere around between five,000 or a you know, a sponsorship, right? I think it's a threeyear term. M >> but yeah, they go out and they and they kind of generate some money. Um and then also I was thinking, you know, um maybe if we did some sort of uh program or um you know, you could play

back on it. There's uh you know, you can have actually a a camcorder or a camera and play, you know, kind of act playback action uh plays, right? Replay for instance. And you know, you we can set up a program, right? New Kanan has that set up a program where you know there's a group of kids that go out there and then you know they they run that part of it. I don't know I don't know if that's feasible but I mean that's something that I want to look at. I was talking to Anthony about that. If we can set something up, you know, I know it's a Friday night and there's kids that I mean, if who knows how many kids are going to want to dedicate their Friday night, right, to I think

it's I think it's a good idea to look at it maybe, you know, I don't know how we how we structure it, but I it's it's there and I think it's the wave of the future and I think some kids would be interested. >> Could be a capstone opportunity. >> Yeah. Yeah. You know, I think that, you know, they could say, "Here, here's, you know, here's uh you guys run the scoreboard, you do the you do the replays, um do the advertising, you know, I I don't know. I I think if we all get together and come up with something, I think it really uh fruitful for >> Yeah. I'm not sure how it's structured, but you know, there's a lot to be >> We were talking also kind of got to be got to

be policy. >> I was just we have a we have a we have a policy to advertise. >> Do we >> I like >> I was Yeah. Do we need to look at it and maybe revise it? I don't think we allow outside advertising back on first where it is. >> We currently have Yeah. Yeah. They do banners. >> Okay. >> They purchase a banner and hang them. Yeah. >> I lost track where we were in all the revisions. >> No, I agree. >> It was a big battle way way back. >> Good. But that's coming down the pipeline and I think if we can get it in the ground, we're going to start by, you know, obviously getting it out, walking through that and see how how realistic this is. But that's my goal.

Obviously, uh I have to sell the idea and that's my All right. That's that's that's >> I just want to say Scott, thank you. Mrs. Riddle, thank you for coming. Um, you know, I know you were worked late yesterday at the basketball game. Um, one other thing I'd like to mention is that uh Anthony and I went there. Thank god I was with him. Going to get in with the golf with the uh with the golf fan. So, I don't know >> machine they have >> this machine they have. So, he bought so he bought me 5050 tickets to pay me back. though, which is good. But and I didn't want that. But anyways, if I if I won, it was going right back. >> We won right back. >> Yeah. But uh yeah, so

I I don't know. I know that we want to get uh cashless. I understand that. Um you know, I don't know if we can, you know, if it makes sense getting a cash box. If not, maybe uh I don't know how we do, but I mean, I know there's older couples there that that was having a difficult time. Um, so that's something like >> like anything you're definitely >> I mean what? >> No, he was just trying to use his phone. >> What? >> Well, you you saw you didn't see a cash box, right? >> Yeah. He's not >> And I'm sure it's not the first time, >> but Oh, it's a Wi-Fi issue. Yeah, that was having a problem as well. So, >> I I thought I thought we put a a booster in

there. Is that no longer viable? >> Will we have better luck in front outside of the gym? Maybe. Oh, yeah. What's it have the same problem. What we'll have to >> No, cuz it's outside. >> Cuz it's outside. >> Okay. I have no hands. I'm trying to make sure. >> Okay. You're not taking cash. >> Yeah. Is that just for accounting reasons or no one has to run to the bank to deposited or >> the board made that decision a few years back? I mean, honestly, it's it's actually advisable, you know, in all of our accounting in terms of money flow and how that money is going to be kept. And, you know, unfortunately, when you have such a large cash availability and people with that cash, it's it's harder to account for that money

versus digitally. Pass. >> What happens with empathy? Yes. Oh, they do cuz it's not um that's confidence. >> I know cuz I worked that table. There's a lot of money coming in coming superintendent. >> Actually, in the discussion with our athletic coordinator and our high school principal, they had come up with the idea that at these meetings, um it would be appropriate to give an athletic update in terms of what's happening with our sports. Uh since this is is the athletic committee and it meets quarterly, so it aligns with our seasons. Um, so for this month's report, since it's not on the agenda, I'm going to defer to them to give us our athletic update. >> Y um, and some of the topics that were already discussed, which I will breeze through them a little

bit quicker so that I'm not wasting time. Um, I would like to start with boys basketball. They're currently having a pretty good season. We had a we had a tough game yesterday, but they're having a good season overall. They're five. Um they have one game left in the regular season. They've qualified for both our SEC league and CIA state tournaments. Had multiple players that are going to make the all SEC team. Know anything about our league? That's that's tough. The SEC is a very competitive league. So to get our players named all league team is pretty awesome. Um, we've also had players chosen by Game Time Connecticut as performers of as performers of the week almost every week season. They're currently ranked seventh in the state and fifth in the SEC. So, boys basketball is

going well. Uh, girls indoor track, they are heading into their postseason. They achieved fifth place at the East sectional uh track meet that they compete in. The girls there qualified um 14 events. They hit the doublel state standard. So, we have 14 uh different events that Shelton will be represented at at the state championships for indoor track. Uh they meddled in two relays at the east sections, the 4x400 relay and the 1600 meter sprint medley relay. And they qualify for they'll qualify for state opens this Saturday. Um some even bigger wins include Fulade Denmola, one of our seniors. She broke the school record in the 300 meter race. and our 1600 meter uh sprint relay is heading to nationals in Boston after after um all of the regular season state meets. So that's quite an

accomplishment standards for to attain for to go to nationals are our boys outdoor track or boys I'm sorry boys indoor track team is entering the postseason as well. They took third at the East Sectionals meet. Um, and they were seated seventh when they went in. So, they served quite a few teams on their way. Um, and 28 out of the 32 athletes that they brought to that meet are underassmen. So, 28 of them are coming back, which is we're going to have a powerful team next year. Um, out of those athletes, 19 qualified for the class doublel state championships, meddled in two relays, the 4x200 meter relay, and again in the 1600 meters relay, and qualified for the state opens this Saturday. Qualifying for the state opens is pretty tough. You get to get into

the top five at the double L, which is arguably the most competitive class at the state level. Our our girls basketball team started off slowly as they battled through injuries and illness. They were able to pick up their fifth their fifth win on their senior night and they were one win away from making the CCC and state tournament. They're building. We're seeing some progress with them. Our wrestling gales are having a historic season right now. Highlighted highlighted by a second place finish at the SEC tournament uh winning the Quinnipic Division Championship and multiple individual conference champions and medalists. We have 52 wrestlers that are in our program at this time which is fantastic. that larger than usual. >> Absolutely. Five years ago when I started here, Coach Maloney approached me and told me he didn't

think he was going to coach wrestling anymore because he didn't want to rebuild the program. He expected to have six wrestlers. We're at 52 right now. >> Yeah. Goosebumps to hearing that. That's great. >> Yeah. And we correct. Thank you. We We have It is a co-ed wrestling team. >> We currently have six girls that are also on the wrestling team. And uh our league our league is specifically looking at avenues to try and girls more possibly their own season. The state is also looking at >> girls. We've got some very competitive girls on the team. >> Do girls wrestle guys? >> Currently they do. >> And that's all that's all we care about. >> They're good. >> Um cheerleading. Our SHs cheer team has earned fifth place at the SEC championship. Three of our

athletes again recognized as part of the all SEC team for 2026. They have six competitions remaining. So they're kind of just ramping up right now. They're getting ready to go. They have their state championships on March 7th. And right now the momentum for them is pretty strong. They're doing open. Uh boys swim this year. We have a co-op team with Trumbull. So boys swim in general is seeing lower numbers across the state. cooperative teams are allowing two programs that meet certain specifications to merge into one program and we've been able to do that with Trumbull. Uh and it's been really successful for us. Finished the regular season at 10 and two and we won our SEC championships which is the first time we've ever done that. So that was a really great accomplishment. They'll have

the uh they'll have the Southern Connecticut Conference Championships next week. We have co-ops with both boys and girls ice hockey. Our boys ice hockey co-op is with West Haven. Girls co-op is with Massich. Both teams are doing well. In fact, we have junior. His name is Kai Lupa. He's the starting goalie for the West Haven for the West Haven Shelton co-op, the boys team. And Adam Mclo just got his first varsity goal as a defenseman. Shot it from halfway back. >> Wow. Crazy. >> Very cool. Um, we have our unified basketball program and as usual, they're thriving. They're getting ready for their upcoming games and tournaments that they have. This is a team in a program that's been nationally recognized more than once. Um, and they are just getting started. So, we're excited to see

all the things that they're going to bring about. We had our SIS basketball teams this year that did great. The boys basketball teams finished spectacularly. They won five out of their last six games to finish their season at seven and five. So they started out in a tough spot and just battled all the way back to finish at seven and five. So we're especially proud of that. >> That's a good group of boys. Seven and eight boys coming up. That's that's going to be a good group there. >> Work hard, very well behaved. We're excited for them again. >> Um and we're we like we talked about as far as new programs, we have we're moving forward with freshman lacrosse for both and girls, which we talked about. We're also going to be moving forward

with the SIS cheerleading team that existed many years ago, kind of fell off. We're going to bring it back. Um, we have we have the mats, we have the uniforms. Again, with Dr. Sarinich being as cooperative as he's been throughout all of this, we were able to find the money within contract already to fund a coach to to take this team over. They will travel with our our high school teams at the same competitions. um which I think is going to be such an awesome learning experience for them where they are going to be part of everything that we've already accomplished just because that's that's that's the path now. Um so we're excited about being able to prepare them for the next level. It is quite a jump. It's pretty much it for us for

this quarter. >> It's it's it's a good quarter. There's so many >> job well done. >> How many more teams I fought? Well, this is the smallest season we've got. >> That's why we need a scoreboard with the advertising. >> Yeah. >> Thank you. >> Thank Thank you. >> Thank you. >> Any other discussion? >> Nope. Great. >> I'll make that motion to adjurnn. >> Hey, I'll second. All in favor? I I
